Two men arrested for murder of British woman Two men have been arrested for the murder of a British woman at Granja de Rocamora in November. The two, now in custody, broke into the victim’s home where she lived alone. Their intention was to rob her and they stole €600 in cash. During their escape they hit her in the chest, a blow which proved fatal. One of the murderers turned out to be a close friend of the victim. Guardia Civil have spent a number of months investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident as there was little evidence at the woman’s home pointing to the two men. Instead, detectives began to investigate those known to the woman and, following certain lines of enquiry, identified the two men. Officers eventually arrested two men of Dutch and Spanish nationality aged 49 and 33 respectively. The men have been charged with the alleged crimes of homicide and aggravated robbery of a 70 year old British woman. Both men have been remanded in preventive detention after testifying in Orihuela's Court of Instruction 3. On November 18th 2019, a friend of the victim called the police after discovering her body on the floor at her home with apparent signs of violence. "At the crime scene, there was nothing,

The reconstruction of events

not even a small hint, that could help the agents to clarify the crime. The only certainty was that she opened the door voluntarily, because access to the house had not been forced," said Guardia Civil sources. According to the same source, after months of analysis of the scant evidence found at the murder scene, there was one line of investigation that gained momentum: the murderer had to be known to the victim. "However, the motive could not be established until the arrests took place, both in the town of Crevillente." According to investigations,

"the two detainees went to the victim's home that day with the clear intention of robbing her. One of them, a close friend of the deceased, knew that she would open the door for him." They knew that she kept cash at home "they went straight to steal the amount of 600 euros. In the escape, to get her out of his way, one of them struck a fatal blow to her chest, which ended her life.” The proceedings have remained secret throughout the duration of the investigation, until July 2020, when the reconstruction of events was carried out.

of people and 75% do not greet by shaking hands, two kisses or offering hugs to people with whom they do not live. Also 75% of those surveyed stated that they maintain an interpersonal physical distance of at least one and a half meters, and 68% indicated that they limit the number of people with whom they have close contact. The survey also found that people are sticking to individual transport, with 71% using their own car, while 55% travel on foot, compared to 20% using public transport. The use of public transport services has decreased because of the fear of infection. Almost 8% of people needing to travel have used a bicycle or scooter, and only 4.6% have chosen a taxi or rental vehicle with driver (VTC). 1.3% say that they have not travelled outside the home. In terms of how we perceive activities in terms of safety, 79% of those surveyed regard that practicing individual sport

most difficult moments of the pandemic, with a high level of follow-up on containment measures, and now it has once again demonstrated a high commitment to compliance with preventive measures.” Director General of Pubic Policies and Analysis, Ana Berenguer said that despite good practice by the public, “we cannot let our guard down. We must remember that the virus is still with us and in order to keep it under control, everyone's involvement, being constant and following the instructions for hand hygiene, interpersonal distance, wear a mask, as well as keep the spaces ventilated.” The survey also looked at an overview of social behaviours and found that 83% of the population avoids situations that may lead to an encounter with a large number

presents a low risk of contagion. A high percentage of the population considers it safe to go shopping at small shops while maintaining the safety distance (72%). At the opposite extreme, as being considered less safe, activities such as attending religious services with limited seating are only considered by 15.8% as being safe while 8.9% would consider travelling by plane. 37.5% of the respondents believe that there should be a new lockdown if there were another wave of infections similar to that which occurred in March, with the same conditions as first imposed. Another 11.1% believe that this social isolation should be even stricter. However, 22.2% consider that it should be more flexible, and for 13.2%, such confinement should only be for people in vulnerable categories. 9.9% believe that the cost would be too high, and a more optimistic 2.2% doubt that there will be a new wave of infections.

Off duty officer foils robbery in Torrevieja An off duty Guardia Civil officer foiled a robbery at a Torrevieja shop recently. The officer witnessed the theft of a cash register from the balcony of his home and decided to intervene. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday when at around 2.10am, the officer was woken by a series of bangs out on the street. He went out to his balcony and saw a man crawling under the metal shutter of a nearby establishment. The man then emerged with a black box in his arms –

the cash register of the premises, containing €120. The officer didn’t hesitate to rush from his apartment to the scene in order to apprehend the perpetrator of the robbery. When the

man saw the officer (although, he didn’t know at the time it was an off duty Guardia Civil) approach, he attempted to flee and when the officer caught up with him, he began an “intense and violent struggle” and in the process of being detained, fractured the officer’s forearm. A nearby patrol made its way to the scene and took over custody of the man, a 31 year old Spaniard, who is due to appear in court soon. He has since been released pending trial.

Coast demands ambulance SELLING? IGNORING THESE 5 THINGS COULD COST YOU THOUSANDS Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

Is your home currently on the market? Expecting to get top Euro? Buyers are on the hunt to purchase the best their budget can get them right now. They don’t want to stretch themselves to their maximum limit, if there are items in the property that will need fixing or repairing. They may not tell you they’re going to make you a cheeky offer to compensate, but any repairs that need to be seen to, will reflect in their offer, like it or not. Make sure you pay attention to these 5 things, or they could end up costing you thousands! 1. Repair any significant deficiencies. Buyers and their agents tend todrastically overestimate the repair costs and often use any necessary repairs as a leverage tool for negotiating a lower price. 2. Rearrange furniture to create more space. If you’re selling your property “fully furnished,” buyers will be looking closely at what you’re offering, so if it’s looking a little worse for wear, consider removing it from the room completely, or strategically covering any imperfections.

3. Dirty laundry is for social media, not the floors, or even hampers - Wash laundry daily and don't allow it to accumulate while your home is on the market. Buyers are like detectives! If they see you don’t care about the simple homely tasks, they’ll assume you don’t care about the major ones. They will interpret this to negligence for any home repairs, and use this against you when it’s time to negotiate. 4. Emphasize windows andnatural light - Clean, repair, or replace blinds or curtains and make sure they are always open during viewings. If the room is dark… what are you hiding? 5. Keep it cool - Turn on your air conditioning during viewings. This will prove to a buyer that your machines are in working order AND it will encourage them to stay longer and have a lasting look around. For more tips on achieving the most amount of money for your home sale, head to www.80ThingsReport.com for a list of the 80 things you can’t afford to neglect when selling your home!

The Orihuela Councillor for Health, José Galiano, has once again demanded that the regional Department of Health provides a full time ambulance for Orihuela Costa, or at least extends the hours of coverage for the current SAMU ambulance service on the coast. The Councillor said: “Currently, we still do not have a consistent service that provides a quick response in emergency cases on our coast during the summer season when the population multiplies considerably and local residents get a reduced service through the winter too. “The arrangement at the moment means that as well as Orihuela Costa the SAMU ambulance also covers the municipalities of Pilar de la Horadada and San Miguel de Salinas. The specialist crew cannot be everywhere at once and so at the moment none of the residents in these areas are receiving comprehensive emergency medical provision.” The Councillor recently met the secretary for Health of the Valencian Community, Isaura Navarro, to demand, yet again, an improvement in this vital service. However, at the time of going to print the Councillor had “not yet received any response." Therefore, the SAMU service continues to currently offer a 12hour service provision. The Orihuela City Council is

Jose Galiano

requesting a 24-hour extension as has been demanded regularly for a number of years as the resident and summer populations grow. Councillor Galiano noted that unfortunately in recent years, with a similar situation just last week, "residents of the coast have suffered due to the inadequate service. Lives have been lost because the ambulance service

has not arrived on time”. Finally, the Councilor for Health pointed out that once again "the summer season has already begun, the population is increasing every day on our coast and we have no news from the Ministry of Health regarding this urgent need, but we will not tire of reminding and demanding this service until it is provided”.

Homeworkers head to the coast The coronavirus crisis has normalised teleworking in Spain. Now, as the temperature begins to rise, many workers have begun looking for a place to take refuge from the July heat, where they can continue to work remotely. Almost all, regardless of the sector, have become used to virtual meetings, to organising their work and personal life in the same space, and to reporting over the telephone. When bosses and employees were sent home due to the coronavirus pandemic, many began to look for a new home office with views of the beach or the mountain. The Spanish telecommunication company Telefónica has noticed a huge demand for portable Wi-Fi devices over the last few weeks. “The rise in requests is similar in areas with fewer than 1,000 inhabitants as in those with more than 50,000, which is not typical,” said a company source. Many companies in Spain had to radically change their business practices in response to the coronavirus crisis and the government’s recommendation for home working. In May, according to a study of work trends published by the consultancy group Genetikomm, only 41 percent of companies had

introduced a teleworking culture. According to a study by the freelance services company Fiverr, 76 percent of small and medium businesses will maintain teleworking after the coronavirus crisis. A few months ago, few people would not have thought that a television station could air and invent high-quality programs from home in less than two weeks. But that’s exactly what the subscription network Movistar+ was able to pull off. The company provided equipment and material to all of its employees, from journalists and directors to riggers and other roles. What’s more, Movistar+ renewed contracts remotely, which was “unprecedented,” according to Alex Martínez Roig, the head of content. “The fear of teleworking is gone. If we organize ourselves

well, it is irrelevant whether the worker is in the physical workplace,” he says. In his opinion, the crisis has accelerated muchneeded changes. “Without the virus, we would have taken five years to get to where we are; we would have gone bit by bit, debating everything a lot more,” he adds. Whilst, there is little doubt that the pandemic has altered people’s perceptions of what is commercially achievable from home, the influx of city homeworkers to areas such as Cabo Roig and Mil Palmeras is being met with mixed feelings on the coast. Bars, businesses and restaurants absolutely need all the trade they can get, every customer is a bonus. However, residents are still nervous that the influx over the next six weeks will bring with it a spike in the virus.

Domestic violence campaign The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, has launched a new campaign called #PREVECOVIG, which has been developed by the Department of Equality and the Municipal Service for Attention to Gender Violence (Semavig) to raise awareness and eradicate gender violence. The campaign will be run predominantly through social networks and will also communicate the change of location and

phone number of the Department and Semavig. This initiative, which was created with the effects of the Covid-19 confinement repercussions on domestic violence firmly in mind, aims to sensitise the entire population to issues related to gender violence. This will take advantage of the enormous presence that currently exists on social networks, where the Department of Equality will, each week, post different images and text of a very visual and explanatory nature on issues of empowerment, risks and counternarrative on toxic relationships. “Being aware of the use that has been made of social networks during this time of confinement by Covid-19, together with the different institutions that finance and support prevention and positive actions against gender violence, the campaign has been designed using the networks to launch messages of equality, prevention and eradication of this scourge ”, explained Mayor Bascuñana.

How to Be Greedy When Others Are Fearful "We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful." This quote from the Oracle of Omaha (Warren Buffett) is repeated often, or at least part of it is. But saying something is a lot easier than doing it.

Miraculous Murcia rescue An African migrant has saved the life of a lady with Alzheimer's, who in her confusion was trying to climb out of a third-floor window. The rescuer scrambled up the façade with his bare hands. Samba Coulibaly, 44, who has lived in Spain for 11 years and works packing fruit and veg in a warehouse, says he has 'never climbed anything before in his life', but that he scaled the 10 metres (32'6”) to the pensioner's balcony 'by instinct' and without even thinking about it.

He had seen the woman, who is in her late 70s, trying to get out of the house via her window after discovering her front door was locked – she was dangling over the edge of the balcony. Her distressed husband was trying hard to hold onto her and stop her falling, or jumping, but was gradually losing his grip on her as his strength sapped. “There were lots of people down below shouting for help,” said Samba, who witnessed the terrifying scene in his home neighbourhood of Santiago El

Mayor, in the city of Murcia. “I just knew the fire brigade wouldn't get there in time and that she was going to fall, so I climbed up to help her. “But if you asked me to climb up there again, I couldn't do it to order – I still have no idea how I did it.” Samba has become a local hero in Santiago – but like most local heroes, he dismisses his brave action as something he felt he 'couldn't not' do. And he has since been dubbed 'The Spiderman of Santiago'.

China warns of Bubonic Plague case While the world is still battling the new coronavirus, an ancient disease has reared its head in China. On 5th July, a herdsman in Inner Mongolia (which is part of China) was diagnosed with bubonic plague and is receiving treatment at a hospital, Bayannur city health officials confirmed. Yes, that’s the same disease as the "black death," which caused the most fatal pandemic recorded in human history, wiping out 30-50 percent of Europe’s population in the 14th century. On the same day, the city commission issued a third-level alert (the second lowest in a four-level system), which warns people against hunting, eating, or transporting potentially infected animals, particularly the large ground squirrels called marmots. The alert stipulates that dead or diseased rodents, patients with suspected plague, and patients with high fever and unexplained death must be reported. The neighbouring country of Mongolia had recently announced that it has lifted

Marmot

restrictions in Khovd Province after two cases of bubonic plague linked to the consumption of marmot meat were reported a week ago. Health officials said the patients’ conditions had improved, the Xinhuanet news site reported on 1st July. Reports of people diagnosed with bubonic plague are rare but not unheard of. In November, Xinhuanet reported a

diagnosis of bubonic plague in an Inner Mongolia resident who hunted and ate a hare. He was treated in a hospital, and 28 people who had been in close contact with him were put under medical quarantine. The same week, two patients were diagnosed with pneumonic plague in Beijing - but no epidemiological association was found between the two cases, according to officials.

THE OUTLET GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP After a sharp fall on Monday, the pound spent the rest of the week slowly regaining some of its losses. Early in the week, it looks as if little would move sterling; the services sector PMI was in line with expectations at 47.1, 18 points higher than the previous month, pushing the composite measure from 30 to 47.7. There was a slight improvement in consumer confidence at -27 according to GfK’s provisional figures. The numbers did little to move sterling in reaction, but the pound did manage to take the top performing slot against a basket of major currencies. Analysts suggested optimistic signs regarding the Brexit negotiations were assisting the pound, together with anticipation of the Chancellor’s Summer Statement and the hope of assistance for business on the horizon. It may be that the market was simply looking for good news, but immediately after Rishi Sunak’s Summer Statement, the response of sterling was underwhelming. The £30bn package of support was welcomed by some and criticised by others but after digesting the details, it appeared to be good news for the pound which made further gains against the euro. Despite the package providing a shot in the arm to the UK economy and to the pound, analysts believe with the immediate crisis waning as lockdown measures ease across the country, the progress of the UK/EU

negotiations will be the main driver of the pound’s value in the coming weeks. EUR The euro was part of a similar narrative to the pound, but had nothing to answer sterling’s rise, despite the fact that the Euroland services and composite PMIs came in slightly higher than those in the UK. It may be that the tone of European leaders has been slightly more muted than in the UK. While the Prime Minister is placing all the focus on recovery, the European Central Bank President said the pandemic would have a long-term impact on the economy, with two years of downward pressure on prices and monetary policy remaining loose. The European Commission’s Economic Forecast included an 8.75% contraction in the euro zone economy this year, followed by a 6% expansion in 2021. The downbeat mood was also reflected in the Sentix index of euro zone investor confidence, which gained six points on the previous month to reach -18.2 but it was significantly lower than forecast. Angela Merkel began her term of the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union by announcing a five-point, €750 billion coronavirus recovery plan which is still awaiting approval. The lack of movement in the plan whilst other countries begin to roll out their support packages is perhaps why the euro struggled to make progress this week.

Stay of grace extended Utility suppliers will not be allowed to cut off supplies due to non-payment and homeowners can request a deferment of their mortgages until September, the government has announced. An extension on the stay of grace announced at the beginning of lockdown, back in March, has been granted, to give laid-off employees and recently-reopened companies a chance to get back on their feet, as well as some breathing space for those affected by localised second outbreaks of Covid-19. Water, electricity and gas providers are banned from stopping supplies where bills are unpaid – already, they are not permitted to do this without considerable warning and several reminders, or without contacting social services to see whether the consumer is a registered user – at any time up to and including 30th September. This only applies to utility bills unpaid for a main residence, not for a holiday home or second or subsequent property which is left empty or between tenants. Also, anyone who needs to request a mortgage 'payment holiday' due to reduced earnings as a result of the pandemic now has until 29th September and can do so for a maximum of three months. These three months can then be extended by up to another nine if the

bank agrees, although the interest amount on the mortgage will still be payable – just not the capital. In the next few days, the period where a tenant is allowed to request an 'extraordinary renewal or extension' to a rental agreement, subject to the same conditions as those enjoyed prior to this extension, of up to six months, will also be stretched out until 30th September. This applies only to rented properties where neither the occupant nor the landlord has given notice of termination of the tenancy agreement within four months of its expiry date. Where the landlord is a large corporation, a publicsector company, or where the property is one of multiple residences let out by a professional landlord, tenants can request, up to September 30, a deferment or exemption from rental payments. Tenants do not have the automatic right to request a reduction, exemption, or payment holiday where the landlord is an individual with only one or two properties let out, and Spain's government is not willing to enforce a moratorium on rent collection, since a rented property may be the owner's main home which he or she is absent from for a period of time, or a family holiday home, and in these cases, there may be a mortgage that the tenant's payments covers, or the owner may need this money as part of his or her monthly income.

NHW meetings back on Torrevieja West NHW & Residents meetings are about to start again.

Deputy President Pablo Iglesias

This said, a number of private landlords who do not have a mortgage on their let properties and would not be left strapped if they lost their rental income have been agreeing for tenants to defer payment, or not to pay at all, during the pandemic – although this has been a voluntary arrangement. Consumer credits, such as personal loans or finance directly offered by providers of goods or services – like hire purchase – can also be shelved for up to three months if requested by the payer before 30 September, where he or she has been financially affected by the pandemic. During this period, the finance company cannot demand payment, effect embargoes or take any other reinforcement measures against the consumer. Government Deputy President Pablo

Iglesias calls this 'an unprecedented social shield' which has 'never been seen before in the history of the country'. “We've constructed a social shield which, almost certainly, has room for improvement, and which is, almost certainly, limited in its application, but we have not forgotten what regular household expenses and utility bills mean to those families who were having a really tough time already and who, as a result of the Covid-19, are having an even worse one now,” Iglesias said. He strongly criticised 'political thinking' – largely coming from the far right – which 'blames' those families who are struggling financially for 'not having worked harder' or 'made more effort' to 'help themselves'. “Unfortunately, we still, even these days, have to listen to this type of political view,” he said.

The first public meeting after the easing of the state of alarm will be at 4.30 on the 28th September at Casa Ventura. Organisers are pleased to announce that the British Consul will attend to provide the latest information on the TIE card and to respond to members queries on residency and health care after Brexit. Also attending will be Association Babelia who have a grant from the UK Gov to provide practical help and support to our members in obtaining residency and members will have an opportunity to register their interest. As numbers will be restricted due to social distancing rules, members are asked to pre-book seats, either through the facebook site Torrevieja West Neighbourhood Watch or email to mda237@outlook.com. The team would like to thank members for their continued support during the coronovirus alarm.

Brits can apply for ‘nonEU residence card’ British nationals living in Spain can now apply for a non-EU 'residence card' the General Directorate of Migration and Police has confirmed – but this is not compulsory for those who already hold the so-called 'green certificate' or full residency. Provided for in Article 18.4 of Title II in the Brexit withdrawal agreement, Brits living in Spain do not have to apply for what is known as a Tarjeta de Identidad

del Extranjero ('Foreigners' ID card', or TIE), but have a right to do so if they wish, since this photo-card document is a simple way of proving residence and showing who you are. Article 18.4 establishes that each EU member State can opt to allow UK nationals and their families who reside permanently there before the end of the transition period on New Year's Eve to not have to request a 'new' residence

document if they do not want to do so, meaning they will not have to go through the process involved. If they do decide to acquire a TIE, it will expressly state their condition as a beneficiary of the withdrawal agreement. Temporary residence documents are valid for five years and permanent ones for 10, but this is in keeping with the requirement of Spanish nationals to renew their national ID cards (DNI) every

few years, in the same way as most countries do with a passport. Renewing a TIE is likely to be a simple process involving a form, photograph and a small fee. Residence cards will have a minimum validity period of five years, and applications for permanent resident cards will be accepted provided they fulfil the requirements of Article 15 of the withdrawal agreement. This includes

having been legally resident in Spain for at least five years, even if any current residence document has not yet expired. Many British expats have been rushing to get their 'green certificates' – which do not carry a photograph or fingerprint and cannot be used to prove identity, and which are now in credit-card size rather than the original A4 version launched in 2008 – before the end of the transition period.

Make a marvellous Mojito This traditional Cuban cocktail is one of the most well-known cocktails around. Combining white rum, soda water, fresh lime juice and sugar, it’s everything you could really want in a refreshing cocktail with a boozy hit. The key to a good mojito is muddling lime, sugar and mint together first. This basically means crushing it all in a jug, or glass to release the flavours of the fruit and herbs. Once you’ve done that it’s a matter of adding the rest of the ingredients, giving it a good stir, and then you’re done! It’s important you use a white rum here, rather than dark or spiced versions. White rum tends

to be more sweet, subtler in flavour with tropical coconut vibes. Because dark rum has spent a longer time ageing so it’ll be spicier and more caramel notes. However, once you’ve made the white rum classic you might want to try other rum variations, just to double check that white rum really is the best....perfect excuse to try as many Mojitos as you can! Containing five easy to come by ingredients, this mash-up of contrasting flavours come together for the perfect cocktail. I think it tastes like sunshine in a glass, tropical rum flavours, bright, fresh notes from the mint,

a hit of citrus from the lime and the refreshing tang of soda water. To make 1 Mojito: • Juice 1 lime, plus some lime wedges to garnish • 1 tsp sugar • Handful mint leaves • 50ml white rum • Soda water Directions In a glass muddle together lime juice, sugar and mint leaves. Fill glass with ice and pour over the rum. Give it a stir to combine then top up with soda water. Gently stir again. Garnish with mint sprigs and lime wedges.

Easy ways to burn calories this summer Ditch the gym You don't have to train like an athlete to stay fit this summer. Just try these outdoor activities to burn calories and keep your body toned without hitting the gym. Beach volleyball As we all live near a beach, this sport is easily accessible and free. It’s also a great way to get your heart rate up, make friends, and tone your legs, shoulders, and core. And because it's harder to move in the sand, you get extra calorie burn. Constantly bending and squatting to reach plants is great for your glutes, and your garden will be the envy of your neighbours. Calories burned: 136 calories

Calories burned: 204 calories Swimming leisurely Cool off and enjoy this refreshing low-impact activity. And you don’t have to be an expert in butterfly to torch calories. Moving through the water even at a slow pace gives you an aerobic workout that tones your entire body. When possible, hit the hills to tighten up your hamstrings and glutes. Calories burned: 129 calories (3.5 mph pace)

Tennis Pick up your racket and challenge your friend, neighbour, or spouse to a game of tennis. Running around the court allows you to sneak in an aerobic workout. Bust those aging myths With the right nutrition and activity, aging doesn't even feel like it. It's an assumption that as you age it is harder to workout, eat right and get enough nutrients, have sex, and stay as active and sharp-minded as you used to. Instead, while some aspects do get harder (you might choose a walk over a run as you get older due to joint pain, for instance), you can also maintain your health by focusing on positive can dos and not listening to myths that tell you that you can’t... Old people don't need to socialize It's thought that old people like to sit home and don't enjoy going out as much, but while the type of activities and settings may have changed (let's assume they're more into earlier dinners and card games than hitting a club), older people still wish and need to socialise for better health. A great way to do this is by having meal time with loved ones, whether it's family or friends. If you’re no longer a night owl, go out in the

day time for lunch or join a hobby group. It's impossible to be active This definitely isn't true, as older people can still get up off the couch and move around. "Activity" doesn't have to mean a sprint, a cycling class, or a HIIT class, and it doesn't need to torch calories or make you feel beat up afterwards to count. Older people do have higher risk of osteoporosis and joint pain, which can make these workouts harder to do and can set them up for more fractures and injuries. However, older adults can still go for a brisk walk or jog, do yoga or pilates, which are lower intensity, or even dance, in a Zumba or water aerobics class. There are also plenty of people playing sports, doing high-intensity exercise and climbing mountains well into their golden years. Disease is inevitable based on genetics While genetics do play a huge role in increasing risk of disease later in life, it doesn't mean you're

SALE

doomed. With the right eating and exercise habits, you can help reduce your risk of disease as you age, even if your genes are not working in your favour. If you know that you're at genetic risk for diabetes or heart disease, meet with your doctor to make sure you're on a healthy eating, exercise, and lifestyle plan to help prevent it and to live better through your final years. Keep your brain active, try learning a little Spanish each day, do a crossword puzzle. TV quizzes or even better local quiz nights are also good to keep the neurons firing. Reading books, even just pleasure novels is also a good way to keep your brain in good order and so is learning a new skill. Now could be the perfect time to start playing the saxophone, take up flower arranging or playing bridge. Your memory fades Yes, as you get older, you might retain knowledge at a slower rate and have a hard time remembering things, such as where the keys are or your grandson's birthday. However, it doesn't mean you're bound to get dementia or have a worrisome level of forgetfulness. If you eat well and exercise, you can reduce your risk of dementia. For instance, eating fatty fish, like salmon, has omega-3's to lower inflammation and ward off the disease and blueberries also can lower risk of dementia. What's more, working out can improve brain health and cognitive thinking. Aim to eat "brain food," and make time for regular activity during the week.

Help Vega Baja: from support to classy clothes Despite facing a pandemic and full lockdown, the Committee at Help Vega Baja has continued to work since March supporting people how and when necessary. As the de-escalation process began, it took some considerable thought and rearranging to get the charities head quarters in San Miguel up

Charity News

CostaBlancaPeople 14th - 20th July 2020

and running again, particularly as the majority of its volunteers are older and retired and so fell into a more vulnerable age group. However, the San Miguel headquarters and charity shop opened on 1st June and continues to open 3 days a week – Monday, Wednesday and Friday – from 10am to 1.30pm. Luckily for those visiting the charity shop, Help Vega Baja received a huge donation of brand new Laura Ashley clothes earlier in the year. Initially these were sold at a local market to raise funds for the charity. However, in the new normal, they are being sold in the shop, much to the delight of customers. For example: Tops priced at 90 euros are sold for 10 euros, dresses worth 240 euros selling at 20! No wonder people were keen to snap up the bargains. Even better, if you haven’t yet visited the shop to check out these amazing savings, there’s still time as the Laura Ashley stock is being rolled out each week to encourage return visits. The shop now also has a card reader so people who don’t want to use cash can still shop till they drop. Despite this, like most charities Help Vega Baja is still finding it tough-going. Through the lockdown all income sources for the charity stopped. The market stall is also only just starting to pick up and bars and restaurants are, quite rightly, focused on keeping themselves afloat let alone fundraising

for others. The lack of fund coming in of course has a direct effect on the support the charity can provide to those in need. Charity President Michele Mason said: “Help Vega Baja is currently receiving many calls from people who are struggling financially. Several are people who did not have work contracts and therefore no ERTE and lived off the little bit they may have had put to one side during lockdown. These savings have now run out for many and they are desperate. There have been several occasions where we have literally done a dash out to give Mercadona food vouchers to people, some of whom have not eaten a meal for several days. All are heartbreaking situations. “More and more people who have been living under the radar without residencia etc are contacting us and with the clock ticking it is a worrying situation for them to meet the criteria for residencia too with the Brexit date looming.” Under this circumstance, Help Vega Baja has been referring people to Babelia, which was a grant from given a grant by the UK government to help people obtain residencia, NIE and or pardons. However, this does not take away the need for people to meet the criteria set by the Spanish government with regard to income, healthcare provision. For further information on Babelia call Kirsten on 865 82 02 29 or see the poster on the Help Vega Baja Facebook page.

AA Real Members’ Stories Throughout 2020, each month, the Costa Blanca People features a real life story from real people about what it is like to suffer from Alcholism, what they did to overcome their addiction with alcoholic, and how they lead their lives today on their road of recovery. What is AA? Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership, it is self supporting through its members’ own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organisation or institution, does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

An AA Member’s Story... When I was a child growing up near Glasgow I wanted to be many things. An interpreter at the UN, a sports journalist and a tour guide all featured on my wish list at some point. There was one thing, however, that I swore I would never be and that was an alcoholic. I had spent many an anxious weekend peering out from behind our living room curtains waiting for my father

to come home after pub closing time. Frequently he would arrive propped up between two Mormon missionaries after falling through the hedge of the house where they lived. I remember the humiliation and pain and I vowed never to let myself get into a similar state, especially when I had children of my own. Fast forward forty something years to a tiny apartment in a charity run alms houses which were intended for the poor of the parish in a little market town in England where I lived. My once prosperous life had narrowed down to one room where I sat and drank all day, desperate not to be in this world anymore. How did I get from living in a beautiful designer house overlooking a magnificent glen to poverty and scratching for money for booze? I had become my father. I had reached my rock bottom. I had been a functioning alcoholic for many years and I can't quite put my finger on when I crossed the line into needing to drink every day. When I did my descent was swift and savage and bewildering. I had wakened in the early hours of the morning after a particularly horrendous bout of drinking and popping heavy duty painkillers that I had also become addicted too. I had been doubly incontinent after collapsing from an armchair on to the floor which is where I spent the next few hours. I tried to get up but was paralysed by the combination of booze and drugs. When I was able to move I cleaned myself up as best I could

then sat down and wept uncontrollably. I was an avowed atheist but I still asked God to please help me. There was a newspaper lying next to my armchair and for some reason I picked it up and read an article about the Scottish musician Gerry Rafferty who had died through alcoholism. At the end of that piece there was a number for the national helpline of Alcoholics Anonymous which I phoned and spoke to a lady who recognised I was in deep distress, She promised me someone would come to see me soon and she kept her promise. A fellow Scot took me to my first meeting of which I have no recollection apart from being in pieces. The early days of recovery were fraught, filled full of fear and still masses of self pity. I had to relearn how to live without the crutch of alcohol. I also had to live an entirely different life and accept big changes. For the first time in life I had to be honest about my faults and how I had mistreated people who were dear to me. Working the 12 Step programme and getting a sponsor were crucial to getting sober and maintaining that sobriety. I was able to see how alcohol had made me a liar and a cheat. I was able to see the huge signposts along the way about my drinking but chose to ignore; the benders, the weekend blackouts, days off work. I was born in to a hard-drinking environment and virtually all the male

side of my family tree were alcoholics. The one or two who were not did not exactly go out for a shandy when they headed for the pub. My eventual choice of career was sports journalist and I started on the old Scottish Daily Express way back in the days of hot metal. Our evening paper was the Evening Citizen and we were both housed in a huge building in central Glasgow. The first day I started i was told after just two hours to head for the pub to buy everyone a drink. We began our shift at about 3pm and I was in the pub by 7. I don't remember a thing about it or taking a taxi to get home to my parent's house where I lived. When I was sent a photo of the old sports desk recently by a former colleague, of the eight or so lads

who were my contemporaries' five died of alcohol related illnesses. From there my drinking charted a course through broken marriages, broken families bankruptcy and an unshakeable belief that I could solve anything myself and did not need guidance from anyone. That all changed when took my first step on the journey to recovery with AA. I have found peace and freedom from the shackles of alcohol. I lead a simple and fulfilling life with my two wee dogs near the beach in La Mata and I am happy that I have never been tempted to pick up a drink. I accepted long ago that I have a disease and the best medicine is to be found in the rooms of AA. Derek

DGT Functions Online A few months ago, the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) launched its Electronic Office, a website designed to facilitate all kinds of traffic related functions without the need for making an appointment or going to your local trafico office. In recent months, as previously featured, the miDGTapp has also been operational, the application that allows you to carry all the information related to your driving licence and to your vehicle on your mobile. If the health crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated anything, it is that the digital world has radically changed our lives. In many cases, it is not even necessary to physically go to work, since a computer and Internet connection means we can carry out these tasks from home. Public administrations are also assuming this virtual reality and are digitizing many of their processes. This is the case of the Electronic Office the DGT presented last December. According to Miguel Martín, IT manager of the DGT, this new tool has a triple objective: "First, to better organise the information on the procedures that a citizen can carry out digitally with the DGT" ; second, “offer personalised information and services through the miDGT section”, and third, “improve accessibility and usability, making the user experience more pleasant”.

procedures have also been carried out and more than a million fines have been paid online. Martín ensures that, on a normal day, 100,000 visits are reached, 5,000 of which are to the miDGT section a personal access area, with a password, with our personalised information.

everything related to the driving licence and our vehicle: request a special authorisation to drive or a duplicate licence, pay a fine or consult important information related to the DGT, among others.

In the future, services will be expanded so that "any procedure can be carried out digitally and easily," says Miguel Martín, who stresses that the objective is that, between this year and next, "practically all of our procedures ” will not require face-to-face protocols, especially “ those with the highest volume and impact”.

Accessible in all the official Spanish languages (Spanish, Catalan, Basque and Galician), the site also has a translation function for English, German and French, this page offers clear information and simple to use services. According to Martín, with the new design and more languages, the DGT wanted to anticipate and adapt to the needs of the user.

What does it offer? In the Electronic Office, we can find

Travel Wishes

According to a study conducted by the Cofidisfinancial institution, once the health crisis is over, 58% of Spaniards want to travel. The study reveals that once the worst of the pandemic is overcome, the majority of us have set new goals, including the desire to travel, with 58% of respondents choosing this option, as well as 29% looking to treat ourselves, 18% longing to go to a concert, 15% of us looking to redecorate the house, somewhat ironic after spending so long locked within the walls of our homes, the same homes that 14% now want to reform, whereas just 14% are longing to spend money on fashion, and 13% on personal or aesthetic care. Meanwhile,

some 9% of us, apparently, are hoping to change our car for a new model. Of those who conducted the survey, 65% of the women value being able to travel high, since they give this desire a score of between 8 and 10 points. That percentage in the case of men is 57%. These gender differences also hold for the other two desires: indulging or going to a concert, where women also show more enthusiasm than men. Young people between the ages of 25 and 34 are more willing to travel (69%) than people between the ages of 55 and 64 (53%). In addition, those over 75 years old stand out, showing great enthusiasm for attending a concert (54%).

By autonomous communities, the study reveals that, in all of them, the first desire when normality returns is to travel. But, it is the Aragon where the score is highest, at 70%, whereas those in Extremadura are least looking forward to the prospect at just 48%. Whatever your own personal wish list is post lockdown, remember that the roads are a potentially dangerous place, and with many of us having a forced break from driving we have to be extra vigilant on our return, not exceeding the speed limit, not consuming alcohol or drugs, avoiding distractions and always wearing a seat belt, thus contributing to avoiding the four most deadly elements, the Fatal 4, in road safety terms.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Well, when you lose 4-0 at home to West Ham United and Michail Antonio helps himself to four I think it’s time to turn the lights out, right? Norwich City waved goodbye to their Premier League status almost doing the impossible - making Antonio look like the London Ronaldo. Let us not forget, Norwich beat Man City this season and that might have been the worst thing that could have happened to them. Actually, forget that - those three points probably stopped them posting one of the worst points totals in Premier League history. The three points for West Ham was massive, as were the four goals pressure successfully applied to a Bournemouth side who could not have had worse Saturday even if they had played themselves. At Vicarage Road, Steve Bruce thought both Watford penalties were ‘soft’ - Brucey, imagine how Eddie Howe felt. VAR were clearly busy at the time they were needed to overturn both spotkicks awarded - and Troy Deeney wasn’t going to miss either. Another huge result in the relegation battle, leaving a mouth-watering denouement on Friday night when Watford and the Hammers get together to see who’s still standing at the end. How we would have gone into Sunday with some hope - after all, Everton are a decent team now under

Carlo Ancelotti if you believe the hype. Yeah, about that. I think the lads might have mentally checked out for the season - getting beaten 3-0 by Wolves (which would have been four had Jordan Pickford’s standard mistake crossed the line) does not suggest the Toffees fancy a late push for Europe. Wolves themselves find themselves in an annoying predicament. The Champions League is not completely off the table (at the time of writing, as we still cannot 100% believe UEFA are going to let Man City off scott free) and if they keep pushing for that then they run the risk of ending up in the dreaded Europa League. There’s no such dilemma for Crystal Palace who completely dialled in their performance against Aston Villa. I mean, yes Villa are desperate for points and tried really hard. But 3-0? Villa aren’t good enough to beat anyone 30. Apart from maybe Bournemouth. Christian Benteke clearly didn’t fancy the final three matches of the season either, did he?

The through ball played by Bournemouth’s Arnaut Danjuma summed up their recent plight perfectly. It was delightfully weighted, great vision and put the man through on goal. The problem was, it was played to Jamie Vardy and not Callum Wilson. Granted, Vardy failed to take it but the double whammy was Nathan Ake being carried off having stretched to prevent Leicester going 2-0 up. But, that block by Ake gave Bournemouth hope - as did Kasper Schmeichel having his worst three minutes of the season. A goalkick hitting the back of his player leading to a penno, then one going through his legs leading to Soyuncu getting a red card out of frustration - relegation drama at it’s finest. Could this be the lift-off Eddie Howe has been craving? And could this see Leicester slip out of their secure spot in football’s wunderland? Time will tell, but there’s not much left. If you’d have said Andy Robertson would score a header whilst sprinting in off the right flank I’d have suggested you’d been celebrating Liverpool’s first

Elche CF seem to be Slip Slidin' Away Elche CF seem to be slip sliding away from the play offs. After week 39 they are sadly out of the play off promotion position and occupy 7th place. However it is a very tight table and anything can happen. By Tuesday Elche will have played 18th placed Albacete, and could have slide back up the table! Exciting and nervous times at the Martinez Valero. On Tuesday the 7th July Elche travelled to the Anduva Stadium in Burgos, to take on Mirandes known as the Rojillos. On paper an achievable victory for the Franjiverdes as Mirandes have not won any of their last five games. The first half was unremarkable in every possible way and does not deserve much of a mention, except to say that Elche were slightly better, but were unable to cause much damage. The scoring chances for both sides were few a far between, with both teams having 6 shots off target. They

both held onto the ball well Mirandes had 54% possession and correspondingly Elche had 46%. Josan, on the right wing was the main weapon for Elche. Jonathas had a couple of good chances, sadly all of them missed the target. However it was Mirandes who looked to take the lead from a shot by Malsa which went just over the cross bar. The difference was to be made after half time, when Andoni Iraola's men had been dreaming of getting into the play off positions, and Pacheta's men had been having a nightmare about dropping out of the play off positions. The second half started much stronger, with Mirandes looking the better of the two sides. The Rojillos then stole the lead from a set piece on the 54th minute. Merquelanz took a corner and Marcos

André, alone and unmarked at the far post, took advantage of a defensive oversight to beat Elche goalie, San Román. The goal forced Pacheta to make a triple substitution. He brought on Folch, Escriche and the Elche talisman Nino. This reactivated the offensive play of the ilicitanos. Nino, in particular began to harm the Mirandes defence and looked likely to trouble the so far unneeded Mirandes goalie, Raúl Lizoain. The game was not without its downers for the home side. Iraola had to make several planned substitutions due to injury, but this did not adversely effect their performance or the result. Three more matches to go. Elche CF take on Albacete on Monday the 13th, Fuenlabrada on Friday the 17th and lastly Oviedo on Monday the 20th.

title in 30 years a little too much. Yet, that’s exactly what happened. Just to bring the world back into the correct order, VAR then hilariously failed to overturn the turned down penalty after Robertson was chopped down in the area. There’s one main reason that Liverpool failed to win at home for the first time in 18 months. The Pope. Insert your own cross gag here, but Nick Pope showed once more why he is the best English goalkeeper currently. He singlehandedly (and sometimes used both) kept Burnley in the game, so much so they nicked a point from the champions, a point that makes it a little harder for King Kloppo’s side to break Man City’s points record. If they even care about that. They say they do, but do they? So that Chelsea turned up at Sheffield United and were promptly dispatched 30. Even David McGoldrick scored twice, matching his prediction that even though there’s been no goals forever just like a bus, once one appears the second will be along shortly after. Chelsea were really, really bad however. I mean, really bad. On that showing,

San Miguel Golf Society at Roda Twenty-eight players made it to a rearranged meet at Roda, kind enough to find a slot at fairly short notice after another course cancelled. Not a bad turnout given summer numbers are always low, whether impacted by COVID-19 or not, and due to that nasty virus as well, causing trepidation amongst some members regarding venturing back on to the golf course. The course was in very good condition, a clear advance on that found at La Manga the previous week. Even the bunkers were perfectly prepared, consistent and very playable. A bit of dead, recently cut grass hanging around, which led to some hide and seek with balls, but otherwise absolutely no complaints. Some players still seem to think we are on end of lockdown golf, with arrival at tees only required 10 or so minutes before tee-off time. That is not the case as SMGS is now fully back in to the groove and, apart from not including nearest the pins (which it was agreed by those present will resume next week at El Plantio), all is as before mid-

March, with players in future needing to arrive at least 45 minutes before their allotted time. Due to the numbers playing, only 2 categories were competed for. In Gold Dave Rowe came out on top with 35 points, closely followed by Graeme Forbes on 34, with John Humphrey (32) 3rd. In Silver Brian Mulligan (35) pipped Captain Phil de Lacy on countback. Steve Hart was just behind in 3rd with 34 points. The day’s other prize, the Abacus and its associated bottle of red wine, went to John Rose who fought off some stiff competition. SMGS would like to thank the Roda staff for an excellent day out. Next week we will be at El Plantio near Alicante. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Phil de Lacy a call on 711032859.

regardless of City’s European appeal, there’s a chance that both United’s could end up in the promised land ahead of Lampard’s lot. Tottenham beat Arsenal in the North London derby. Of course, they did. This was a Jose Mourinho 101. Even after Lacazette larruped the Gunners ahead, you just knew Spurs would find a way and they were level before you could even say ‘don’t pass it to Luiz there, not THERE!’ Said Kolasinac sold David Luiz up a river he is perfectly capable of selling himself up and Son levelled, before Toby Alderwereild headed home the winner that justified the latest round of Jose strops that occurred following their poor 0-0 with Bournemouth. Long live the Mourinho, the Premier League will be far less interesting when Daniel Levy sacks him in February.
