Holiday chaos as Spain removed from UK exemption list See Main Advert on page 27

Britons in Spain, or due to travel to Spain, were thrown into chaos on Saturday night when the British government gave mere hours notice that Spain was to be removed from the UK’s travel corridor exemption list from midnight. The change to the rules means that if

passengers arrive in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland from Spain (including islands), they will need to selfisolate for two weeks. The British government said that “Following a significant change over the last week in both the level and pace of change in confirmed cases, Spain has been removed from the list of countries where people do not have to self-isolate when arriving into to the UK. People currently on holiday in Spain are encouraged to follow the local rules, return home as normal and check the FCO’s travel advice pages on GOV.UK for further information. The FCO is advising against all but essential travel to mainland Spain.” A government spokesperson told the Costa Blanca People, “The Joint Biosecurity Centre together with Public Health England have updated their coronavirus assessments of Spain based

on the latest data. As a result, Spain has been removed from the lists of countries from which passengers arriving in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are exempted from the need to self-isolate. Protecting public health is our absolute priority and we have taken this decision to limit any potential spread to the UK. We’ve always been clear that we would act immediately to remove a country where necessary. Both our list of quarantine exemptions and the FCO travel advice are being updated to reflect these latest risk assessments.” The spokesperson continued, “The government has made consistently clear it will take decisive action if necessary to contain the virus, including if the public health risk of people returning from a particular country and not self-isolating becomes too high. The devolved administrations have all

SEE PAGE 10

taken the same decision today, so travellers arriving from Spain into all parts of the UK will need to self-isolate. The government is urging employers to be understanding of those returning from Spain who now will need to self-isolate.” Continued on page 2

Continued from page 1 Reaction in Spain The news has not been well received by officials in Spain with President of the Valencian Community, Ximo Puig urging the UK to make an exception for the Costa Blanca. On Sunday, Puig asked the British authorities to exempt the Valencian Community and especially the Costa Blanca from the recommendation not to travel to Spain, as well as the imposition of a 14 day quarantine. Puig said that the regions within the Valencian Community, particularly the Alicante province which receives many British tourists, have a lower incidence of Covid-19 than Great Britain itself. He said, “the decision does not seem to be justified with the objective data currently available.” The Valencian Government considers the imposition of quarantine in the United Kingdom as a major setback and has expressed enormous concern about the consequences that the decision may have for remainder of the tourist season of the Valencian Community and the Alicante province in particular. The President announced on Sunday that he was going to reach out to the British Embassy in Spain, and to Ambassador Hugh Elliott, as well as the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism. Ximo Puig had a conversation on Sunday evening with Ambassador Elliot, while the region’s Secretary of Tourism, Francesc Colomer, did the same with the Secretary of State for

www.costablancapeople.com

Tourism, Fernado Valdés, to highlight the situation regarding tourism in the Valencian Community. Puig also contacted the president of Hosbec, Antoni Mayor, and together they decided on a set of specific steps that the Valencian Government is also going to bring before central Spanish Government, to defend tourism in the Valencian Community. Ximo Puig was keen to stress that the Valencian Community guarantees safe tourism both by the safety measures imposed by the Generalitat and by the high compliance by citizens of the Valencian Community. Cancellations Despite desperate efforts by authorities in Valencia to protect the regional economy from the UK’s decision, it seems that the fallout has already begun with the UK’s biggest tour operator TUI cancelling all flights from the UK to Spain in the wake of the quarantine decision. TUI has cancelled all mainland Spanish holidays until 9 August. The firm said all those going to the Balearic and Canary Islands could still travel as planned from Monday. The airline industry has expressed its dismay to the decision to impose the quarantine. Rob Griggs of Airlines UK said the decision was a "big blow" to the aviation sector. Griggs said that

individuals should be tested for coronavirus on arrival instead of automatically having to selfisolate. News emerged on Monday that the Spanish Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is negotiating with the United Kingdom to exclude the Balearic and Canary islands from quarantine to "save tourism" - a matter that Benidorm tourism officials consider "a flagrant discrimination of some tourist areas over others by the Spanish state itself". A plenary session due to be held on Monday as the Costa Blanca People was going to press was expected to see a joint motion by local parties urging government to “urgently take all the necessary steps to make Alicante-Elche airport part of that network of safe corridors.” The motion to be presented by local government officials highlights that British tourism is "essential for the recovery of activity in our territory. It represents 40% of the total market and with unquestionable levels of loyalty to Benidorm, the Costa Blanca and the Valencian Community.”

Sunday morning crash

Roman artefacts recovered from a frozen fish shop in Santa Pola

Sunday morning crash

On Sunday morning at 7am, fire crews from Torrevieja were called to a collision on Avenida de las Habaneras in the town centre. A car had crashed, causing damage to four other cars before eventually colliding with a large palm tree and some street signage. Luckily, the occupants of the vehicle were unscathed and only material damages were caused.

Thieves blow ATM Robbers attempted to blow up an ATM in Gran Alacant in the early hours of last Monday. The incident could have had drastic consequences as the ATM, located in the Gran Alacant shopping centre, is right beside the petrol station. The thieves used some kind of explosive to try to get the cash inside the Banco Sabadell cash machine, but the blast was not powerful enough and they fled the scene empty handed.

Roman artefacts

Guardia Civil, with the collaboration of the Valencian Department of Education, Culture and Sport, recovered 13 Roman vases, possibly from the 1st century, as well as a metal anchor from the 18th century, from a frozen fish shop in Santa Pola. The investigation began after the SEPRONA agents were carrying out a routine inspection at a frozen fish storage and marketing facility in Santa Pola. The officers observed several ceramic vases around the shop, a metallic anchor and a limestone plate with an inscription ‘ESTE’ (meaning East), pieces that, at first glance, could be of considerable historical value. Guardia Civil are now investigating the owner of the establishment and his son as alleged perpetrators of a crime against

historical heritage (the acquisition and/or possession of objects knowing their doubtful or illegal origin). The son found the objects in the sea while fishing and took them to his father's store, where they were used to decorate the shop. Experts believe that the items could be from the 1st century, of great heritage value and one in particular could of significant importance, due to its rarity. After an initial evaluation, the objects were transferred to the Santa Pola Sea Museum, for authentication. There, a more comprehensive survey of the pieces was carried out by experts. The amphoras, two handled vases or jugs, would probably be olive jugs, which were used to transport oil from Spain to Rome. Others were also used to transport wine.

If not at home, wear your mask! The recent change to facemasks having to be worn in all public spaces, indoors and out, has left many confused. Unfortunately, it is still common to see people walking on the streets in the local communities without a mask. However, it is compulsory, so be warned because any ‘period of grace’ is well and truly over and spot fines of around €100 are now being issued. The best way to think of the new rule is that if you’re not in your house or garden, wear your mask. If you are walking on the street you have to wear a mask – there is no exception for those walking dogs or wearing trainers. If you are walking your dog you have to wear a mask. If you are walking for exercise (even in training clothes) it is still walking on a public street and you should wear a mask. If you are running, jogging or cycling you are exempt, but we’ll cover the exemptions shortly. Even if you leave your house, to cross the road and but the rubbish in the bin, you should wear your mask.

Keep them near to the door so you can grab a clean one on the way out. It will soon become second nature to put it on alongside you shoes as you go out. It’s also a good idea to keep a pack in the car, a spare in your pocket and ladies can pop a few in their handbags. You mask needs to stay in place, covering your nose and mouth at all times in public, ‘shared space’ places. This includes your place of work, the street, shops, bars, restaurants and markets. You can be fined for having your mask on your elbow, on your chin, in your hand or in a pocket or handbag – it has to be worn on your face at all times. Social distancing is not an exemption – if you are talking to someone or even passing them by and you are 1.5m apart; you still have to wear a mask. I recently saw a man queuing outside a bank, he was at least 2m from the lady in front and the person behind was also socially distanced, so he slipped his mask off to talk on the phone. He could

have been fined if spotted by the police; neither talking on the phone or having a cigarette are exemptions to the rule in the eyes of the law. The ONLY exemptions are: At home, in your garden with people you live with. In the car on your own or with people you live with. At the beach, whilst sunbathing or swimming, but if you are walking along the beach your mask has to be worn. At the swimming pool if you are seated or swimming. Again if you are walking around the pool, you need to replace your mask. If you are doing any form of exercise where you breathe heavy or get out of breath you do not have to wear a mask. If you are seated indoors or outdoors to eat or drink you can remove your mask. Make sure your seat is 1.5m away from the next table and sanitise your hands regularly. If you leave the table, even to go to the toilet you need to put your mask on. There are also medical exemptions that you can discuss with your doctor. In short if out, wear your mask.

HOW PAYING FOR YOUR PROPERTY AFFECTS YOUR TAX Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

Once you’ve chosen your future home in the sun, your agent will discuss with you how payment is to be made. If you’re purchasing a resale, then you’ll only be making two payments; A deposit, then the balance on completion. With a new build, you’ll be required to pay in stage payments, according to the building progress. With any and all transactions you make in Spain, you need to have proof of payments through the bank. Cash is a NO, NO! Or you’ll risk having a hefty tax bill later on. You could be told that paying a portion of the agreed purchase price in cash will be offset against any furniture, fixtures, and fittings, thus saving you money in legal costs. However, by saving a little up front could end up costing you thousands in Capital Gains Tax down the road! For example on a property purchased for €100,000: This full amount should be paid through the bank. No cash. The deposit would be paid by credit card or bank transfer, with the outstanding balance paid by Bankers Draft. (Certified Bank Cheque). Your Property Transfer Tax (Stamp Duty) would then be 10% of the purchase price i.e. €10,000.

If you are being told that you could save money on your 10% Property Transfer Tax by making a part payment in cash….. say NO WAY JOSÉ! Whatever the amount you’ve agreed to purchase the property for, that is the figure you want showing in your Title Deeds. If it states any less, DO NOT SIGN. For example, this is what the figures would look like if you made a part payment in cash: Although you agreed to purchase the property for €100,000, you were advised to pay a portion in cash. Your official purchase price would show as €90,000 in your Title Deeds and not the €100,000 you are genuinely paying, as the €10,000 difference would be paid in cash. Yes you’ll save a little on the 10% Property Transfer Tax, however - when the time comes for you to sell the property, you will be charged Capital Gains Tax. This is the difference between the official price you purchased the property for, and the price you sell at. For example on a property being sold for €100,000: If your Title Deeds show €90,000, and you sell for €100,000, you’ll be charged €1,900 in Capital Gains Tax on the difference. But you did pay €100,000 for the property when you purchased it, even though you paid €10,000 in cash, so why should you be charged anything at all if you’re selling for exactly the same amount as you paid for it? i.e. zero profit. The reason, because officially your Title Deeds only show you paid €90,000! Need expert guidance with your property search? Take action today and call my team on 966 718 392. It could save you thousands!

Beach cleaning group find 22 year old crisp bag Eco Playa Alicante, a newly formed group of volunteers who collect rubbish from the beaches of Alicante, wanted to show "the irresponsibility of human beings" by showing one of their recent shocking findings. Volunteers found a bag of crisps that was sold when the currency in Spain was still the peseta! The crisp bag, found in the rocky area of the Postiguet beach, cost 125 pesetas and is practically intact despite being at least 22 years old, which shows the impact that rubbish has 22 year old crisp bag on the ecosystem and, sea: “Flowerpots - Lollipop sticks especially, the plastic that is Glasses - Balloons - Wrappers thrown into the sea. Car crime spree in Elche A man was arrested at dawn on Saturday last by the Local Police in Elche, suspected of a spate of vehicle break-ins in the vicinity. Shortly before 5.30am, the local police Operations Centre received an alert that a suspicious man had hit several parked vehicles with a hammer.

A night patrol was dispatched and officers located the suspect, who was carrying a hammer as well as a bag full of other tools. Searching the scene, officers also discovered a number of other tools hidden nearby, including a compressor and an angle grinder. Officers suspected that

some of the larger tools had been stolen from one of the nearby vehicles and on inspection, they discovered that as many as 13 cars had been broken into. The 35-year-old suspect was arrested and taken into custody.

Super Speed Camera unveiled The DGT traffic authority this week unveiled its new super speed camera – the Trucam II. The new radar can issue automatic fines from a kilometre away! It is still in the testing phase, but once its effectiveness is verified, its use will be rolled out all over Spain. The Trucam II employs state of the art laser technology to detect speedy motorists at a maximum range of

between 1200 and 1500 metres. It boasts dynamic auto-focus, dynamic auto-iris, a large transflective LCD screen so it can see perfectly in bright sunlight, and a processor that's ten times faster than the previous version. All this state-of-the-art equipment means that the Trucam II radar can measure both the speed of moving vehicles and the speed of approaching cars (for example, those that speed on the approach to a camera and then slow down when the driver believes they are in range). Its margin of error is very low, 2 km/h, and it can register infractions by means of the photographs that it captures every 0.3 seconds. With Ethernet and WiFi connectivity, it sends images in real time to traffic police. Not only that, it is also capable of detecting other types of infractions. It can detect and record aggressive driving, distractions behind the wheel such as using the phone, absence of seat belts, or driving in prohibited lanes.

Rojales protects against flooding Guardamar del Segura and Rojales have agreed to authorise the company Tragsa and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to install a mechanically operated gate in the intake channel of the irrigation system from the Segura river. The work has been requested "as soon as possible" and will target the river as it runs through the town of Rojales and aims to increase safety in the town of Rojales in case of high water in the Segura River and prevent the flooding of the surrounding agricultural lands The agreement has been signed by the Mayors of both municipalities, Antonio Pérez and José Luis Sáez and by the General Trustee of the Rojales Court, Terencio Huertas, according to Rojales City Council . This security project had already been raised previously following the DANA in September when it became obvious that there was an urgent need to place a second gate together to the current one along the Rojales and Guardamr stretches of the river. With this, and in the event of a large flood. Terencio Huertas explained that it is vital “to be able to quickly and easily close the gate and not have the problems that arose in DANA and which cause so much damage to the orchards.”

Finance stays cheap in Spain Loans and other consumer and corporate credit will not become more expensive for at least another year now that the European Central Bank (BCE) has decided to keep the Eurozone interest rate at 0 percent until June 2021, when the situation will be reviewed. Marginal credit facility interest will stay at 0.25 percent and deposit facility interest at -0.5 percent. The aim of keeping interest rates down is to make it easier for companies and individuals to obtain credit and, although it was initially expected that rates would rise this or next year, the Covid-19 pandemic has inevitably caused the Eurozone economy to shrink, along with that of practically every other country affected. Since late March, the BCE has been buying up debt from within the common currency area to enable it to tackle interest rate rises in national markets created by the global health crisis, and has pledged to continue to do so until the pandemic is over. It will continue to reinvest these until at least the end of 2022, and its debtbuying programme is flexible enough to allow it to focus on specific countries where a nation's investment risk starts to rise rapidly. The BCE expects its interest rates to remain at current levels, or even lower, until it sees that inflation rates start to

reach its ongoing target of just below 2 percent. Also, the Bank has pledged to 'provide widespread liquidity' through its 'refinancing operations'. Provision of liquid assets to Eurozone banks, on the condition that these institutions contribute to supporting their local and national economies, has proven a popular move and demand is 'very high' across the common currency area, the BCE explains. Consumer credit has become much cheaper in Spain in the last few years, especially since the financial crisis, a factor which has helped reactivate the country's economy. These interest rates do not affect mortgages in Spain, which are governed by the Euribor, and which has been in negative figures for over four-and-a-half years. The plummeting Euribor has made mortgages and home-buying much more affordable since the financial crisis brought a wave of repossessions, a situation which is unlikely to be repeated now Spain has adopted the European directive which prevents lenders from applying abusively-high interest as non-payment penalties, and stops them evicting homeowners for defaulting on their mortgages until at least 12 monthly repayments are owing, or 20% of the full loan unpaid, whichever is the lower.

Spanish designer creates super mask A mask which measures air quality, the wearer's heartbeat and breathing, is selfdisinfecting and with a transparent screen so the face can still be seen has been created by a Spanish designer. The 'Cliu' is safe, reusable and disinfects itself, says its creator, Álvaro González. Álvaro and his team put their heads down and all hands on deck – working closely together, but entirely online due to everyone in Italy, where he now lives, being confined to their homes – and spent the best part of eight weeks focused on their new project before the finished result started to take shape. Álvaro said: “What we wanted, above all, was to solve the different issues that crop up with conventional masks. “The first and most basic advantage [to the Cliu] is transparency and communication; the second advantage is respect for the environment [being a non-disposable variety] and the third is its built-in technology.” Álvaro says the Pro version is equipped with Bluetooth, microphone and sensors which, along with the complementary App, allows the wearer to 'prevent health problems' by monitoring breathing condition and frequency, heartbeat, and the quality of the surrounding air. Also, via the App, the wearer can check the battery level, and the percentage that the filters are working at, as well as real-time information on air pollution on the spot and in neighbouring areas. It even detects where the nearest Covid-19 cases are. The Cliu has an in-built UV lamp which allows the mask to be 'recharged' in less than an hour, and which 'kills bacteria in

an instant', meaning it automatically disinfects. Even though the mask is totally hermetically-sealed, the front part – which is transparent – can be opened and closed, so you can even wear it in a café and have a drink, popping it back again between sips. Two versions have been created: The Standard, and the Pro – the latter is the technological version – and its prices range from €99 to €250. The first versions of the Standard are expected to be on the market by October, and anyone who has contributed to the crowd-funding campaign gets first refusal. You can even choose from five different colours. The Cliu is made with recycled, and recyclable, material, says Álvaro. “At the moment, we're working with the biotechology department at Siena University to be able to add in a type of

anti-microbe and bio-active filter,” he reveals. “Also on the subject of the environment, once we've sold 20,000 masks, we'll have contributed to building a barrier along the river Arno [in Italy] designed to collect up 20 tonnes of plastic waste which would otherwise end up in the sea.” Plus, as they are not of the disposable type, they will not create masses of waste which would otherwise end up in landfill, since the approved tissue-type masks cannot be recycled – even though they may be possible to recycle as paper or cardboard matter, or as plastic, the fact they may be infected with SARSCoV-2 particles means they have to be deposited in the 'main' rubbish bins – as is also the case with surgical gloves – since recycling plant workers would otherwise be at risk of contagion.

Fines for red flag swimming With high winds prevalent mid last week, it was no surprise to locals that many beaches along the southern Costa Blanca were flying the red flag. Red flags mean no swimming, and defying the lifeguard’s instructions can result in hefty fines. Local police had also intensified its monitoring of beaches and compliance with lifeguards and last week, officers issued fines to several beachgoers in La Mata for not heeding the instructions of the Red Cross lifeguards. When swimmers ignored the red flag and despite pleas by the lifeguard to get out of the water, remained swimming, the police were called and the swimmer was forced to get out of the water and receive a fine. This happened several times over the course of a couple of days, according to reports. This stretch

of coast has already seen two drawings so far this month. If swimmers defy instructions, lifeguards will phone the police to help intervene. Red flags mean no swimming, yellow flags mean swim with caution and the

green flag means it is safe to swim. The southern Costa Blanca – especially the stretch of water between Guardamar and La Mata – is notorious for deadly rip currents which may not be visible from the shore.

Local University creates new lemon drink The Miguel Hernández University (UMH) in Elche has developed the first liqueur using organic lemons from the Vega Baja region, without additives and natural ingredients. In collaboration with the company Vega Scorza, the scientists at the UMH used the fruit and leaves of the Fino and Verna varieties. Led by the professor of the Department of Plant Production and Microbiology Pilar Legua, the UMH research team is also made up of the professor from the Department of Agri-Food Technology at the UMH, Ángel

Carbonell, as well as members of his Department. Finally, after months of work, the team has managed to find the ideal formula for the production of two varieties of drink: a 40º lemon liqueur and a 20º one, each with its corresponding characteristics and both being recommended to drink before or after meals to aid digestion. According to Pilar Legua: "The idea arose in response to the concern of Javier Vidal, Executive Director of Vega Scorza, who wanted to give added value to the production of lemons in the Vega

Baja." "Murcia and Alicante are responsible for more than 85 percent of the lemon production in Spain, which is mostly exported fresh, but there is a large gap in terms of liqueurs produced with this fruit," Vega Scorza said. The joint work between the UMH and Vega Scorza continues with several open lines of research in order to take advantage of the parts of the lemon not used in the production of the drink and their application in other areas such as in the production of cosmetics.

Local Covid19 cases revealed New figures have been published on which Vega Baja towns and cities have been hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic since PCR tests began. Here are the ones most relevant to our readers: *Figures correct when released on Friday 24/7/2020. Orihuela installs technology to count people on beaches The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, the councillor for Modernisation, Sabina-Goretti Galindo, the Councillor for Tourism, Mariola Rocamora, and the councillor for Health, José Galiano gathered recently to present new ‘people counting’ technology at the beaches of Cala Capitán , Cala Estaca and Cala Cerrada in Orihuela Costa. It is a project is part of the “Intelligent Tourist Destination” program that the Oriolan City Council started last year and ‘is a clear example of how Orihuela advances towards new technologies that we have at our disposal to efficiently and effectively manage certain resources that are limited,’ said the Mayor. “The new smart posts will measure the influx of people who visit the Oriolan beaches. It is the first time they have been installed and thanks to this we can count the number people who come in real time", said Councillor Rocamora. The four posts, two located in Cala Capitán, one in Cala Cerrada and the other in Cala Estaca, have been transferred to the beaches for the summer season but will have different locations, as they are planned to be placed in different strategic points in Orihuela such as large-scale events

Latest technology

like the Medieval Market or Easter Parades, which will provide exact data on the number of tourists and visitors. In case of large numbers flocking to the beaches in coming weeks, resulting in maximum use, this method will allow a quick response by the State Security Forces and relevant bodies to avoid risk situations in the face of the current Covid-19 pandemic. These ‘smart posts’ are connected to a server and in direct contact with the controllers of the Valencian Generalitat, in addition people who are interested in seeing the capacity of the beaches

before going can visit: https://smartcounter.wavecom.es/ which shows the actual occupancy figures in real time. The Councillor for Health appealed to local residents and holidaymakers to “take the appropriate measures that the City Council is putting in place for everyone – social distance, regular hand washing and wearing a mask at all times. I want to reach out to the young population and point out that we are still living with the virus and the only way to deal with Covid-19 is to all work together in the best possible way to get out of this situation.”

Bogus Microsoft telephone scammers targeting local computer owners A scam in which computer owners receive a phone call from a person claiming to be from Microsoft is once again in operation with local computer users falling victim to these cyber criminals. We spoke to Phil from eNET Computers this week to find out more about the scam and how we can protect ourselves. Is it a scam? Phil, a Microsoft registered engineer, explained that this is not a legitimate call from Microsoft. Neither Microsoft nor its partners make unsolicited phone calls (also known as cold calls) about your computer security or software fixes. Any contact with Microsoft is always initiated by the customer, never by Microsoft itself. What do I do? Phil advises that if you receive a call like this one, it’s a scam, and all you need to do is hang up. Cybercriminals often use publicly available phone directories, and even social media to piece together information about you, so they might know your name and other personal information when they call you. They most certainly guess that you are using Windows (90% of us are) but it is a scam, so simply hang up. Why is it dangerous? Once cybercriminals gain your trust, they might ask for your user name and password or ask you to go to a legitimate website to install software (teamviewer) that will let them remotely access your computer to “fix” it. Once you do this, your computer and your personal information are extremely vulnerable. They will take control of your computer and while on your end, it looks like your computer is

frozen they will attempt to copy data from your hard drive which includes personal information, accounts, passwords, client information (if you use your computer for work), bank details (as well as passwords) and more. Phil explained that the fallout from a security breach like this can take months to surface. It might not occur to you until months later that you have sensitive information or a particular account or subscription that hackers can take

advantage of. It’s better to avoid being conned rather than try to repair the damage afterwards. Why do we fall for it? These criminals are experts in what they do. First they gain your trust, then they convince you there is a problem and then, they offer to fix it. When the scammer calls you, they often ask for you by name. They’ll say they are a computer security expert from Microsoft (or another legitimate tech company) and taht they have detected a problem with your computer. They will confuse you with jargon and ask you to open common Microsoft utilities or download an app that list what appear to

be problems with your computer. Then they offer to help fix the problem and convince you to download software which, unbeknownst to you, allows them to control your PC. Sometimes, they claim your copy of Windows is unregistered and ask for your credit card details for the licence fee. As no legitimate IT security professional is ever going to call you in this way, you should always treat all unsolicited phone calls with scepticism. If you receive an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft Tech Support, it’s best to hang up. Phil’s advice is: • never give anyone access to your PC, laptop or tablet, unless you can confirm it’s a legitimate member of the computer support team with whom you are already a customer and have spoken to • never give anyone access to your personal details or passwords or disclose financial information either via a call or email. • never pay a fee for any unsolicited technical help • don’t download any software, or click on links sent to you by a person who has phoned or emailed you out of the blue. • Keep you antivirus software up to date and use a reputable app like Malwarebytes to scan your computer at least once every two weeks If you have any questions or to find out more about how to protect your PC, or to arrange a health check, call Phil on 687 36 28 44.

Epidemiologists advise no smoking on beaches and terraces to avoid infections Experts warn that tobacco use puts smokers and non-smokers at risk of infection The Spanish Society of Epidemiology (SEE) has demanded that all the terraces of bars and restaurants, beaches, outdoor shows and private cars be converted into smoke-free zones and has warned that tobacco consumption increases the possibility of contagion of Covid-19. In a statement, the Smoking Group of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology (SEE) proposes to expand smoke-free spaces to protect the population from tobacco smoke and warns that tobacco use in outdoor spaces puts both smokers and nonsmokers at risk of becoming infected with Covid-19. In a statement, the SEE said that smokers who are infected and asymptomatic can emit droplets of water with the SARSCoV-2 virus, putting the rest of the population at risk. The SEE recognizes that antismoking laws have managed to significantly reduce smoke exposure, but recommends taking a step further. It considers that there are still spaces, both indoor and outdoor, not

regulated by law in which smoke levels are high, which carries significant health risks for smokers and those around them, especially minors. In fact, it states that 80% of establishments in Spain break the law by allowing smoking on terraces covered with two or more side closings which often means that concentration of nicotine and particles can exceed the levels found in interior spaces when smoking was once allowed. At the moment, the Government is working on the implementation of a new antismoking regulations which include an increase in taxes and the comparison of vaping with traditional cigarettes in order to be able to prohibit vaping in non smoking areas.

Another new piece of legislation could be the prohibition of smoking in private cars, a matter pending regulation in Spain but one which is already in place in other countries such as Canada, the United States and Italy. However, the SEE believes that these measures should be accompanied by an increase in spaces in which smoking tobacco or derived products are not allowed, such as beaches, hotel terraces, sports facilities and outdoor shows, bus stops and train platforms, entrances to educational centres where there is the presence of minors, university campuses and in private vehicles.

Spain is officially the healthiest place to live The world renowned medical journal “The Lancet” recently published the results of a ten year long survey on life expectancy and the effect environmental factors around the world are having on health. The results show that Spain is most definitely the healthiest country to live in, in Europe and possibly the world. Life expectancy is 81.4 years compared to 79.9 years in the UK. Furthermore the general population have an average 70.9 years of healthy living compared to 68.6 years in the UK. So what does Spain have that the rest of Europe doesn’t have? Healthy Diet The famous ‘Mediterranean diet’ is widely believed to be an important factor. The fruit and vegetables are fresher and cheaper which means that everyone can afford their 5-aday. People of all walks of life eat more fish and shellfish, nuts, pulses and grains. Olive oil is used for cooking, dressings and replaces butter or margarine on toast in the morning. It is undoubtedly a much healthier option. Warmer climate Here is Spain we have average

winter temperatures of 18 degrees and summer temperatures of 28 degrees. The days are brighter and longer. With an average 320 days of sunshine people spend more of their lives outside; whether it is an outdoor activity, socialising with friends, long walks or leisurely days at the beach. This is better for your health, heart and soul. Ex pats from all over the world report noticeable health improvements from the dry micro-climate. In conditions such as rheumatism, arthritis, asthma and heart related problems. World class healthcare Spain has recently seen a notable decline in deaths from cardiovascular diseases and

cancer. This has direct links with a change in public health policies based on screening and prevention. Which means that heart problems and cancer are discovered at an earlier stage, hence, treated earlier and less

likely to terminal. Less stress It is a long standing joke that when it comes to getting things done the word “mañana” (tomorrow) is often used. Its a cliché but there is some truth in it, and the Spanish don’t take it personally. They find it very hard to understand why everything has to be done yesterday. The message here is “relax, don’t panic, it will get done eventually”! Golf and sports facilities The golf courses along the Costa Blanca are world renowned and you could literally play every day of the year. Sports facilities are great and there is now an outdoor gym on most street corners and parks. You can get fit on machines that don’t need electricity to make you sweat. A ready supply of Vitamin D If you have a healthy diet you will get all the vitamins and minerals you need in your daily consumption. Nevertheless, you can still be experiencing a drastic shortage of the vital vitamin D! It is found in oily fish e.g. salmon, mackerel, some dairy products, soy milk, eggs – but one of the main sources of this vitamin is sunshine!

Baby rescued from hot car Two police officers in Madrid rescued a baby from a hot car in Madrid city centre at the weekend. While temperatures in the city reached 37 degrees, officers on patrol in the city centre were alerted by a pedestrian that there was a baby alone in a hot car. The parents could not be found nearby so the officers made the decision to broke the window and remove the child, who

is just a few months old. Paramedics were called to the scene and were able to verify that the baby was in good health. A spokesperson for Madrid’s Emergency Services remarked that under no circumstances should any child be left in a hot car since the temperatures inside can easily reach over 40 degrees in summer, putting the child’s health at risk.

Migrants escape on foot Dozens of people arrived on the Murcia coast by boat on Friday morning. Guardia Civil intercepted a paddle boat south of Monte de las Cenizas with 13 adults (12 men and 1 woman) from Algeria on board. In Cabo de Palos, another boat arrived with 16 Algerian men on board. Officers also intercepted a boat with 23 people at La AzohĂa-Campillo de Adentro and just ten minutes later,

another boat southeast of Cabo de Palos with 12 adults on board. Then, just after 9am just south of Cabo Negrete, another boat was located with ten men on board. Reports indicate that many managed to escape on foot and those that police apprehended are now being held at Cartagena port awaiting a PCR test for Covid-19.

This Week´s Movie Picks Fast & furious 7

The Edge

Saturday 1st August – ITV2, 10.00 pm

Sunday 2nd August – BBC2, 10.00 pm

Dominic and his crew thought they'd left the criminal mercenary life behind. They'd defeated international terrorist Owen Shaw and went their separate ways. But now, Shaw's brother, Deckard Shaw, is out killing the crew one by one for revenge. Worse, a Somalian terrorist called Jakarde and a shady government official called "Mr. Nobody" are both competing to steal a computer terrorism program called "God's Eye," that can turn any technological device into a weapon. Torretto must reconvene with his team to stop Shaw and retrieve the God's Eye program while caught in a power struggle between the terrorist and the United States government.

Between 2009 and 2013, the England Test cricket team rose from the depths of the rankings to become the first and only English side to reach world number one (since ICC records began). The Edge is a compelling, funny and emotional insight into a band of brothers' rise to the top, their unmatched achievements and the huge toll it would take. One of the toughest sports on the planet, and psychologically perhaps the most challenging. Featuring unseen footage from the period and new interviews from star players and coaching staff including: Andrew Strauss, Sir Alastair Cook, James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Graeme Swann, Jonathan Trott and Andy Flower, The Edge will reveal the team's intense and often hilarious pursuit of success. Strauss and Flower took over a team including some of the true greats of the English game (Pietersen, Anderson, Cook and Broad) and transformed them into a phenomenal winning machine before the pressure and scrutiny began to fracture bodies and minds.

Apple cider vinegar benefits, backed by science Ikea launches vegan Look up ‘apple cider vinegar benefits’ and you will likely find a vast array of claims, from aiding weight loss and lowering cholesterol to boosting skin health. There are books entirely devoted to its advocated benefits, health bloggers hailing its wonders, and – in true superfood fashion – it has even recently become the new flavouring of a healthy popcorn. But, does the science support the hype? May aid weight loss A handful of small human studies have shown that vinegar may increase feelings of fullness, causing people to eat fewer calories. One study by Arizona State University found participants ate up to 275 fewer calories per day and lost weight. However, experts warn that vinegar should not be seen as a magic bullet for weight loss. ‘To achieve consistent, measurable weight loss, one is best advised to manage calorie intake and exercise,’ they say. ‘To date, there is no scientific evidence that vinegar ingestion would lead to the degree of weight loss expected by most who desire to lose weight.’ Has antibacterial properties Apple cider vinegar can help kill pathogens, and has a long history of use as a natural food preservative. The main compound in the vinegar, called acetic acid, destroys harmful bacteria and prevents them from multiplying. One test tube study found that apple cider vinegar was effective at killing Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus – the bacteria responsible for staph infections.

Helps regulate blood sugar Type 2 diabetes is characterised by elevated blood sugar – also believed to be a major cause of other chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease – so keeping blood sugar levels stable is highly important. The best established health benefit of vinegar is its antiglycemic (blood sugar reducing) effect. Diluting one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in one (250ml) cup of water and drinking it at the start of the meal will reduce a spike in blood glucose. The spike is most pronounced following a starchy meal – breads, pasta, rice, pizza, etc – and this is the type of meal most impacted by vinegar ingestion. The active ingredient in vinegar is acetic acid. This small fatty acid molecule appears to interfere with the digestion of starch to individual glucose molecules in the small intestine. Therefore, less glucose is available for absorption and postprandial glycaemia (post-meal blood sugar rise) is reduced.

potential when treating conditions such as acne. A study in the Annals of Dermatology found that treating mice that had eczema with a vinegar cream resulted in fewer flare-ups and improved the skin barrier. However, 22 people with eczema reported that apple cider vinegar soaks did not improve their skin barrier and caused skin irritation in a study.

May help manage skin conditions A few studies have examined the use of apple cider vinegar in treating skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis. If you have scalp psoriasis, applying organic apple cider vinegar to the area can help reduce the itching sensation, according to the National Psoriasis Foundation. Since skin is naturally acidic, diluting apple cider vinegar before applying it topically is thought to help rebalance the natural pH of the skin and improve the skin barrier. Its antibacterial properties are believed to have infection-fighting

The bottom line Some apple cider vinegar benefits have shown potential in early studies. But of the few scientific studies that do exist, most have either been conducted on animals, are very small scale, or took place solely in the confines of petri dishes, and as such are not robust enough to draw real-life applications from. Vinegar has been used as a remedy for centuries. But far more research is needed before it can be recommended as an alternative to existing – and proven – therapies, medications and treatments.

version of famous meatballs

Additionally, research published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology cautioned against applying undiluted vinegar directly to skin, as it can cause burns. May help treat high cholesterol Cholesterol is vital for the normal functioning of the body, but having high levels increases your risk of serious health conditions, including heart disease. In a study, obese rats who were given a daily dose of apple cider vinegar saw reductions in their total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels.

No matter how much of a well thought out plan you have, a trip to Ikea will always be one of the most stressful things you can embark on – especially with a loved one. Marriages have ended in the blinds section of that place, and friendships ruined by the potato mashers. But, if you do manage to get through a trip to Ikea without murdering a loved one, you should always reward yourself with a plate of meatballs in the Ikea cafeteria – or at least a bag of the frozen balls to take home for dinner. Up until now, vegans had to miss out on the celebratory Ikea balls, but not anymore. Ikea has announced that it’s

launching a vegan version of its iconic meatballs. Ikea’s new Plant Balls are made from yellow pea protein, oats, potatoes, onion, and apple, and have a very similar taste and texture to Ikea’s meatballs. The new plant balls launch in Ikea cafes on 3 August, and eight balls will set you back £1.50. But Ikea has been quick to remind vegans that the mash and sauce traditionally served with the meatballs both contain dairy, so are not vegan. But Ikea’s chips are vegan, so plant balls and chips for lunch it is! You’ll also be able to buy bags of 500g plant balls from the food market to cook and serve at home.

Emerald Isle supports frontline workers The Emerald Isle, La Florida, hosted a Soul & Motown daytime fundraiser to give support to the Local Police and frontline health workers. The event featured specialist DJs Ian and Jilly Brown, Mick Nottingham, John Mc’Millon, Terry Foster and Ricky Devine. Special guest was local ‘King of Soul’ singer Richie Alexander. As with any event at the Emerald Isle the outside terrace was full of local residents ready to have fun in the sun, enjoy the music and raise money for a good cause. However, the weather had other ideas and the heavens opened. This was not just a scattered rain shower either; the thunder storm unleashed torrential rain for more than two hours. Luckily, the entertainers and staff members leapt into action and saved the day

with everything being moved into the Emerald Isle large function room. The weather did very little to dampen the spirits of the crowd and the event was soon back in full swing. The upbeat sound of Frank Wilson’s ‘Do I love you, indeed I do’ soon had everyone chair-dancing to adhere to social distancing guidelines. A few wellknow soul and motown classics made the perfect warm-up act to everyone’s favourite Richie Alexander who did what he does best and provided top class entertainment. This was added to by specialist DJ sets that took the crowd back in time to the golden age of music. The charity event was organised to show appreciation and gratitude to all of the local medical and emergency services staff for their tireless work during the on-going Covid19 pandemic. The event raised 418e which will be donated to local charities chosen by the emergency services.

Aldi launches a new lemony gin Gin is a great thing. It’s great when it’s pink, it’s great when it’s peach-flavoured, and it’s especially great when it’s all shimmery. Knowing full well the nation loves gin more than life itself, Aldi has launched a new premium gin with a deliciously refreshing lemony taste. The gin is called Eidyn and has been created by The Old Curiosity Distillery. All the botanicals used to make Eidyn have been hand harvested from the Old Curiosity's Secret Herb Garden on the outskirts of Edinburgh, before being hand dried to create a delicious gin. The lemon thyme and lemon balm botanicals used in the gin give fresh citrus notes, which is then followed by a crisp juniper finish. Hamish Martin, Director at The Old Curiosity Distillery, commented: “We’re thrilled to be working with Aldi to create a new and truly unique, premium gin. We are a family business and we put our passion and love into everything that we do, and we believe that comes through in the quality of the products that we create. “What makes Eidyn so special is the unique blend of fresh lemon thyme and dried lemon balm, juniper, angelica, winter savoury and coriander, all of which are grown right here in our Secret

Herb Garden using no chemicals what-so-ever to ensure the true essence of these fantastic botanicals are infused into every bottle. “I love growing the botanics with all my heart, and I’ve loved creating this new gin for Aldi. I truly hope their customers enjoy it.” Graham Nicolson, Group Buying Director, Aldi Scotland said: “It has been a long-term ambition of ours to partner with a leading Scottish distillery to

develop a new, premium gin that will form part of our core range across Scotland. We are extremely proud to launch Eidyn Gin, which we know can happily hold its own amongst the leading gins across the country, while carrying an exceptionally competitive price. It’s been a real privilege working alongside The Old Curiosity Gin on this project, and witness the skill, care and passion that has gone into crafting this delicious gin.” The new gin will be rolled out across the UK and Europe.

Charlie’s Sports Bar & Grill Steven Rayner had always wanted to run his own bar and with his passion for sport – football and his beloved Tottenham in particular – he had a wealth of ideas. “I had visited many bars, sports bars, pubs and clubs over the years and I was keen to put my own ideas into practice – to have my own place and put my own spin on some of the great ideas I had seen over time.” When the opportunity came up to buy a bar in Spain in summer 2019, Steven became the proud new owner of Charlie’s Sports Bar & Grill in the lovely town of Los Montesinos. He opened for business on July 1st last year and quickly became a local favourite. “I wanted customers to have a nice experience – I tried to think, what would I like from visiting a bar, and put that into practice. I didn’t have any previous experience in the bar or restaurant trade so I was really learning on my feet, but always my philosophy comes back to ‘If I were my customer, what would I enjoy’ and so far, that seems to be working really well.”

At Charlie’s Sports Bar, you’ll find a large outside terrace and a delightfully air conditioned bar. All sports are shown live in the bar, so if it’s soccer, boxing, GAA football, tennis – Steven is happy to accommodate and ensure you can enjoy your favourite sport in nice surroundings with good company and good food and drink to match. At present, he has installed six large screens for optimum viewing experience and he has plans to install more before the end of the year. At Charlie’s, you can also enjoy live entertainment every Saturday night as well as Karaoke, Music bingo (which, we hear is amazing fun) and

there is a quiz night every Tuesday at 8.30pm with Fazz, the bar’s very own Quiz Master. True to its Sports Bar nature, Charlie’s also has a Golf Society, Darts Team and Pool Team so if you would like to meet new people and enjoy a hobby, ask for details behind the bar. To help people integrate into life in Spain, and to help holidaymakers pick up a bit of the lingo, the bar also hosts Spanish lessons every week. And, because the venue is rather large, it has the capacity to cater for groups and parties. So, if you are planning a special occasion, a wedding, birthday, anniversary, then this could be the perfect place Equally, if you have a club or group looking for a venue, then give Steven a call. He would be delighted to hear from keep fit groups, ballroom or line dancing, comedy evenings, slimming groups etc. Charlie’s is open from 9am to late every day and you can get in touch via phone, email or Facebook and find out more on Trip advisor. Sharing box from Burger King Burger King has launched a new Sharer Box, featuring chicken nuggets, chilli cheese bites, onions rings, dips and the return of the iconic Chicken fries. The sharing box was announced alongside the return of Burger King’s famous Chicken Fries – basically a super long and crispy chicken nugget made from 100 percent breast meat that combines all of the best bits of a chip and a nugget. They also come in regular breading or a jalapeño breading, for all your spicy boys and girls. The fast-food-hybridof-your-wildest-dreams was originally bumped from the menu at the beginning of the pandemic as Burger King tried to streamline its menu

to help staff. Now they’re back across the UK and Europe – alongside the Halloumi King Burger and the Bacon King Burger - and it’s officially time to place your orders. You can grab your Chicken Fries on their own or as a side to a cheeky Whopper, but it’s all about the sharing box – so let’s return to the more important item on the menu...

Basically, if your favourite dinner is a selection of beige foods from the freezer, prepare to meet your fast food match. This brand spanking new menu item features all of your favourite finger foods – five chicken nuggets, five chilli cheese bites, five onion rings, five chicken fries and two dips. The only thing not included is chips, so don’t forget to order some on the side. As the name suggests, the sharing box is marketed for two or more people – but with five (a particularly odd number) of every item inside you could share with more friends. Or even better eat it all to yourself and just share it with your stomach.

Dad's Guilty Secret I am sixteen years old and I am keeping a big secret. I was on my Dad’s laptop when I shouldn’t have been, and I saw messages between him and a woman. It makes sense now why Dad was telling me not to use his computer lately. The messages were very personal and he’s been meeting her and having a full on relationship. This would devastate my mother if she knew, and I know she would divorce him and not give him a second chance. I feel my world is crumbling around me. We are such a happy family and I can’t understand why my Dad feels the need to have a girlfriend. He seems to love my mum very much and they still kiss and cuddle. I have no one to talk to about this. I can’t tell my mum, ever. How can I fix this? It is very sad that you have the burden of this on your shoulders and that you have no one to talk to. You could firstly telephone the Samaritans and talk to one of their counsellors – it will help you feel you aren’t alone. Then, if this were me, I would get your Dad alone, perhaps when your mum is out, and tell him you know about his affair. Don’t let him fob you off with denials – you’ve seen the proof. Then ask him what he intends to do about it, because if he isn’t going to tell your mum, he should end the affair. Tell him you don’t want to be put in a position where you have to tell your mum, and hopefully that might push him into ending things with this woman. You are giving him an ultimatum, without being too forceful. You say you are a happy family - if he doesn’t want his marriage to be over, then he will end things with this woman. Good luck.

Get Set for a Safer Summer The summer months often increase risks when driving, not only from the road environment, but also from within the vehicle. Sometimes, especially in the hot weather, the temptation to “relax” a little too much is greater, which we often see manifesting as feet up on the dashboard for passengers, or arms, and sometimes legs, extended out of the vehicle, but maintaining a proper position in the vehicle is not only important for our comfort, it is crucial for our safety. When used correctly, the vehicle´s seats and features offer the maximum protection in the event of a collision. If we do anything to change the characteristics of these features, we risk our safety tremendously. The trouble is, it is easy to forget about the safety features when we are weighed down by the summer, but putting our feet on the dashboard, or the seat for that matter, arms waving out the windows, not wearing our seat belt correctly are all an absolute NO. Arms and legs should be kept inside the protective shell of the vehicle. Sticking your head, arms, or legs out of the window is not a particularly good idea. There are countless documented cases of motorists suffering serious injury when “clipped” by a passing car, as well as the more gruesome stories of the loss of limbs in the event of a crash. Having an arm out of the window also poses a risk to other road users such as cyclists and motorcyclists. Being able to put your head out of the window implies that the seat belt is not worn correctly. If your body parts are not within the safety cage of the vehicle, then you are at risk and are risking others.

being crushed by the impact between the dashboard and the seat. In addition to the increase in occurrences of this sort of behaviour, there is also an increase in the number of fines issues as the traffic police try to not only advise drivers of the problem, they try and enforce remembrance through the issuing of fines. Incidentally, in the event of a passenger putting their feet on the dashboard, it is the driver who is ultimately responsible for the safety of the vehicle and, as such, it is the driver who will be fined. Article 18, Section 1 of Royal Decree 1428/2003 of 21 November, approving the Rules of the road, states that “The driver of a vehicle must maintain their own freedom of movement, the required field of vision and permanent attention to driving, to ensure their own safety, that of other vehicle occupants and other road users. To achieve this, you must take special care to maintain the proper position and that of the passengers, and the proper placement of objects or animals transported so that there can be no interference between the driver and any of them“. Keeping both hands on the steering wheel, not leaning with an elbow on the window, keeping your arms inside the vehicle may have been the repetitive messages our driving instructor taught us when we first took lessons, but the advice is still very much key to a safe driving experience. Offence: Failing to maintain the proper position in the vehicle.

However, for the seat belt to be effective, it must be worn correctly, for it to fulfil the function it is designed for fully. The correct way to wear the seat belt is for it to go across the torso diagonally, and across the waist, firmly secured in these positions. The top part must be on the hard part of the collarbone, halfway between the shoulder and the neck. The lower end sits against the hardness of the pelvis. The three-point seat belt, which is fitted as standard to most modern vehicles, has an upper (thoracic) and a lower band (pelvic). Both must be snugly fitting against the body. For the seat belt to offer maximum protection it must be on the hard parts of the body, leaning against the collarbone, halfway between the shoulder and neck at the top, and the iliac crest of the pelvis, never on the abdomen. Accessories such as cushions or other additions should not be used. Once you have pulled the seat belt across your body and secured the strap in the locked position, make sure that the seat belt is not twisted at any point. If it is, undo the seat belt and remove the twists. Once secure, pull the seat belt so that it fits snugly against the body, with any slack being taken back at the top. If the seat belt is not worn correctly, it can cause further problems in the event of a collision. For example, if the upper band is taken off the shoulder, it can cause a head impact with the windscreen, dashboard, or seat in front. It can also produce cervical lesions. If the belt is not firm around the body it can cause the vehicle to slide under the belt, casing lower body and spinal injuries. This is often referred to as the “submarine effect”. To prevent “submarining”, the vehicle occupants must also sit in a proper position when riding in the vehicle, with the seat belt securely fastened as mentioned, and without having any additions such as pillows or cushions which may contribute to the reduction of effectiveness of the seat belt.

Arms extended from the vehicle may also confuse other road users who might

This can refer to passengers with their feet on the dashboard, drivers with their arms out the window, or any other situation where proper posture is not maintained. Fine: 80 euro.

think that you are giving hand signals, thus posing a risk that those drivers may incorrectly react to what they think you are gesturing. Visibility may also be obscured as a result, blocking the vehicle´s mirrors and making it difficult to observe the vehicle surroundings correctly.

Reason: There are many reasons why this rule is important. For example, in the event of impact, the injuries sustained by a person with their feet on the dashboard are nothing less than horrific. The same goes for instances where limbs have been lost or severely injured on account of them protruding from the vehicle. Plus, the seats in a vehicle are designed to give maximum protection, and comfort, and not being correctly positions poses a risk, and can hinder visibility by the driver.

Even within the vehicle there is a serious risk of injury if you are not sitting correctly. An all too common sight in the summer months is a car passenger with their feet up on the dashboard, a practice that is not only illegal, but is extremely dangerous.

The correct wearing of the seat belt is also crucial. Not wearing it over your shoulder and across the torso is the same as not wearing it at all. That is why the fine for wearing a seat belt incorrectly is 200 euro, the same as if you weren´t wearing it at all.

In the event of a crash, if a passenger is travelling with their feet up on the dashboard, the injuries that may occur will be very serious, partly as the deployment of the airbag can cause more serious injuries than it prevents in this situation, and, irrespective of an airbag being present, the glass from the windscreen can cause serious injury, not to mention the effects of a passenger

Seat belts are designed for one purpose only, to save lives. Statistics show that by wearing a seat belt the probability of death when involved in a collision is halved, whereas according to the data from the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) and the Instituto Universitario de Tráfico y Seguridad Vial (INTRAS), the risk of death is cut by a staggering 77% in an overturned vehicle.

It is also important to remember the one seat belt – one seat rule. All vehicle occupants are obliged to wear a seat belt, both in the front and the back seats. Some vehicles only have two seat belts in the back for example, and so that vehicle can only carry two passengers on that seat. There are other rules regarding children in cars. Primarily, children under 1.35 metres in height are not allowed to travel in the front seats and they most use an appropriate restraining system for their height and weight.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Never before has a 1-1 draw away at Crystal Palace been celebrated so fervently. After all, Spurs fans were worried they might end the season without any trophies and their point against Uncle Roy’s lot at Selhurst Park saw Jose Mourinho lift the ‘Postlockdown trophy’ he was so keen to get his hands on. This will, of course, go down as one of Jose’s finest achievements. If you look away from the fact that he deliberately had a bad start to lower expectations around the club just so he could come back and look like the hero, this is a Porto-esque time in Mourinho’s life. No money to spend, no real stars and a small team with very little expected of them, to take Tottenham Hotspur to the Europa League is a moment Spurs fans will remember forever. There’s been something missing from Spurs in the last season or so, and that thing is clearly Thursday night football. Imagine if Pochettino hadn’t managed to turn around those awful Champions League group stage starts and taken them to the final? It could have been him celebrating on Sunday afternoon and not the new Mourinho. You can imagine the pre-match chat in the Watford changing room. Hayden Mullins, thrown into the fire after the club sacked Nigel Pearson for daring to give them half-a-chance of staying up, will have suggested ‘keeping it tight’ and ‘don’t do anything daft early doors’

and ‘even if they do score early, just make sure you are still in the game after half-an-hour’. Sounds good in theory, Hayden. After Craig Dawson had given away a penalty in the opening minutes, Watford found themselves three down after 30 - and then decided to play, and play well. The final score of 3-2 wasn’t enough after five seasons and probably double the amount of managers, Watford will be in the Championship next season. To stay up themselves, Bournemouth needed to take care of business at Goodison Park and hope that West Ham might fancy putting in a shift and beating Aston Villa. The issue with that is, if you are relying on West Ham to help you out then your future really isn’t looking that secure. Bournemouth did their bit, in a way that makes you wonder why they couldn’t find just one performance like that in one of their post-lockdown noshows. Even Dominic Solanke seemed to score, possibly inspired by the even rarer sight of Moise Kean finding the back of the net. But, at the Athletics Stadium, West Ham weren’t that bothered. They were so not bothered, Moyseh hauled off his two best attackers in Antonio and Bowen at half time. Even then, Villa struggled to get the game done. It was only when Jack Grealish (obviously) scored with five minutes to go it looked like that was that. Villa were safe. Job indeed done. Except West Ham woke up for 60

seconds and scored right from kick-off, leaving Villa with a somewhat nervy last few moments. Credit to Villa though, they’ve managed to avoid the tag of ‘most expensive side ever to get relegated’ which will please Fulham ahead of their play-off matches. Around about Christmas time I recall mentioning that the only way Leicester could miss out on Champions League football was if Brentan started believing the press around him and let the tactician devil on his shoulder take over his thinking. I’m going to put that one in my very empty ‘got that one right’ column. Leicester have spectacularly fallen apart in 2020, allowing a not-veryspectacular Manchester United and Chelsea book their Champions League spots for next season. Bruno Fernandes might have had a rare off-day, but all he really had to get right was rolling the ball past Kasper from the spot and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would achieve his aim of getting the club back into the top competition. He got it right. There was approximately 120 seconds of drama at Stamford Bridge as Frank Lampard’s Chelsea helped Wolves not have to go through the rigmarole of Europa League qualifiers which probably start next week. Giroud scored yet again - and I suspect we will be saying the same again this time next season as he sees off any other young upstarts Lamps decides to bring in.

Oh so briefly, Norwich will have felt that they could be the only relegated side in history to do the double over a side managed by Pep Guardiola. The only problem was, VAR didn’t agree and 60 seconds later City were in the lead and that was that. The 5-0 win was routine for City as they eased past 100 goals for the season. The only thing that was missing was a goal for the Premier League departing David Silva, but it’s not as if he didn’t have 15 chances. Liverpool were kind enough to allow Newcastle a one-goal headstart at St James’ Park, as well as not picking their front three. They still won 3-1. Champions, innit. Southampton’s Che Adams is like the dude who turned up late for the party and then didn’t want it to end as everyone is going home. His brace, supported by yet another Danny Ings goal, saw off Sheffield United. That’s three-in-four for Adams now, having taken an eternity to score his first. You’d have had money on Burnley’s clash with Brighton being the last one to get a mention today. With zero significance, I’m not even sure what the end result was. Neither team will be too bothered - they both have Premier League football next season and Graham Potter has achieved the impossible in making Brighton interesting to watch without managing to take them down. ‘Well done, Graham’ must have flashed up on his phone 100 times as all those pundit-cynics who said Brighton were crazy to sack Chris Hughton choked on their humble pie.
