Hope for Orihuela Costa’s abandoned urbanisations See Main Advert on page 27

C.L.A.R.O and its coalition partner Cambiemos Orihuela has presented a motion at the recent Plenary meeting of Orihuela council aimed at finding a solution to the problem of abandoned urbanisations in Orihuela Costa - whose residents, although paying taxes, have,

sometimes for decades, received no basic services. Such is the state of urban planning in Oriheula that there is no available information on the scale of this problem, but it no doubt affects thousands of property owners in several different urbanisations. Historically, responsibility for these urbanisations should have been taken over by the Council once they were completed by the developer. However, in many cases the Town Hall did not supervise the completion of the developer’s obligations and has not taken over responsibility for these urbanisations. And. Of course, most of the developers have since long gone. The consequence is that the residents have been abandoned to their sorry fate of inadequate basic services but have to pay full rates and taxes. The deficiencies are many and

include roads that have no tarmac, unmaintained green, insufficient or no street lighting, access difficulties, problems with security, sewage spills, rat infestations, pavements in dangerous condition, and children’s playground areas are dangerously neglected. Success Since the problems involved in these abandoned urbanisations have been ignored for many years, expectations were that the Popular Party-Ciudadanos government would find a way to oppose the motion. However, most unexpectedly, the C.L.A.R.OCambiemos motion unanimously approved. This is a major step forward since it obliges the government to provide complete details of all urbanisations in this situation (non-recepcionadas), to

seek compliance by developers of outstanding obligations and if this is not possible, the government should provide the financial means to do so with a view to their formal acceptance by the town council and their inclusion in the full range of municipal services.

Help with Brexit transition for UK expats The UK Government has launched a public information campaign across Europe to help UK nationals prepare for the end of the UK’s transition period on 31st December. UK nationals living in Spain will receive information about specific actions they need to take to keep their rights and access to services in Spain, including around residency, healthcare, driving licences and passports. The campaign will use multiple channels – including Facebook, digital media and newspaper and radio advertising in – urging people to take necessary action to protect their rights so that they can continue living, working and travelling in Europe after the transition period. This builds on the work the British Embassy and Consulates have already been doing to support UK nationals in Spain. UK Nationals Support Fund Following the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union, three organisations in Spain (each to cover a specific geographic location) have received funding to provide practical support to at-risk UK nationals to complete their residency applications in Spain and secure their rights under the

UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement. Age in Spain, Babelia and Organización Internacional para las Migraciones (IOM) are each receiving government funding to support those who need additional help to complete the paperwork required for residency applications. This may include pensioners, people with disabilities, those living in remote areas or who have mobility difficulties, and those who require help with language

translation or interpretation. British Ambassador Hugh Elliott welcomed the initiative: “Supporting UK nationals is one of our highest priorities and the assistance available through this fund builds on the support that we are already providing at the British Embassy and through our network of consulates. We are delighted that this project will help the most vulnerable UK nationals get

the support they need to protect their residency rights and continue to live safely here in Spain. UK nationals should visit our Living in Guides on gov.uk where they can find more information on the steps they need to take and how to access support.” This project is funded by the UK Government as part of the UK National Support Fund (UKNSF), which has made available a total of £3 million for charities and organisations to provide practical support for UK nationals living in the EU. Residents in countries including Cyprus, France, Germany, Italy and Poland will also benefit. The services available for people who need this additional support include: • answering questions about residency applications, such as the documents required and application procedure • guiding individuals through the process, if necessary • supporting people facing language barriers or difficulty accessing technology In the Province of Alicante help and support will be provided by Babelia. Local businesses join forces for safe corridor status The Chamber of Commerce for Orihuea, Cámara, is supporting the local business community of Orihuela Costa and joined the call for the UK and Spanish governments to create safe corridors for foreign tourism. Camara met with business owners from across Orihuela Costa on Friday to offer its support to companies in this tourist area of the municipality and also in the rest of the Vega Baja, especially those run by British expats. British expats are an integral part of the local business community and they were the first to raise their voices after Boris Johnson’s announcement to impose a 14-day quarantine on anyone arriving in the UK from Spain. "All companies, not just from our area but from across our country, are affected by this measure, but today we wanted to be here together with owners and managers of British businesses because they feel the most upset and affected by the decision taken by London because they do not understand the reason for it,” said Pedro Mancebo, the first vice president of the Orihuela Chamber.

Pedrom Mancebo was accompanied by local businessman Raymond Kearney, who is one of the representatives in the plenary session of the service sector in Orihuela Costa. Around 20 other coastal businessmen attended the meeting, alongside members of associations that have shown their outrage at the imposition of the British quarantine. "They feel very affected and do not understand why such drastic measures have been adopted when they have been extraordinarily scrupulous in applying all the safety and health protocols in their business activities," said Pedro Mancebo. The business owners believe that decision has generated an unnecessary social alarm in the United Kingdom in respect to holidays and visits to Spain. Pedro added: “The local data that Camara has confirms that the rate of infections is much lower here than in any area of the United Kingdom, so the measure imposed responds to other criteria and is not strictly based on medical or sanitary concerns. “For this reason, Orihuela Chamber joins the petition of

businessmen and administrations to negotiate the elimination of this quarantine, at least to allow for people to travel to places that can be considered safe, as is our case.” The meeting agreed that there needs to be co-ordination between administrations, as well as assurance that all the necessary measures are taken to guarantee the safety of travellers. This can be done, for example, with the carrying out of tests and controls of entry and exit to the countries or destination areas. "In this way we will guarantee that no person who may have COVID-19 leaves our country, but we will also guarantee that no one with the disease comes to our area on holiday," he pointed out. The Orihuela Chamber considers that such controls, as well as any other that may be agreed between the governments of Spain and the United Kingdom, should be put in place as soon as possible to prevent the pandemic from spreading further, whilst supporting the tourist economies.

possible new outbreaks in the population. Collaboration with experts, led by Dr. Albert Bosch, a worldrenowned specialist in the field of

aquatic virology attached to the University of Barcelona, will guarantee the validation of adapted sampling plans whose sampling points and frequency will be adjusted according to population criteria and epidemiological. The samples will be taken to LABAQUA, a national reference laboratory for the implementation of PCR techniques for environmental matrices, which will be able to deliver reliable data in less than 48 hours. Finally, these data, property of Torrevieja City Council, will be uploaded on a platform for their study, analysis

and transfer of the data to the relevant authorities. In addition, permanent international collaboration allows the city to incorporate the latest findings in this field to the global situation. This solution has been developed based on the results of the research study launched a few months ago by SUEZ, aimed at characterising the SARS-CoV-2 virus in surface water, wastewater and sewage sludge, in order to monitor the degree of incidence of COVID-19 and its evolution, as well as having an early warning system for possible future outbreaks of the disease. The project has positioned itself as the most comprehensive study carried out in Spain and has also been integrated into the European Wastewater Monitoring System initiative for the Surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 of the European Commission and the General Directorate for the European Environment, with the support of Water Europe, EurEau and the UN (Environment Program).

Torrevieja is following the lead of several cities across the globe by testing its waste water for the presence of Covid-19. The Mayor, Eduardo Dolón, said that "through this innovative ‘City Sentinel’ tool, Torrevieja will be able to anticipate possible outbreaks, as the presence of the virus is detected in the water before the first symptoms appear in affected people". Torrevieja City Council, through a joint venture with AGAMED, the company that manages the integral water cycle, has launched COVID-19 CITY SENTINEL, a wastewater monitoring program to pinpoint the presence of the SARS-CoV virus- two. The technology allows detecting remains of the coronavirus genetic material in the wastewater and quantifying its evolution. This innovative tool has been developed by SUEZ Spain, a business group to which Hidraqua, a company owned by AGAMED belongs, to monitor the incidence virus through the analysis of wastewater and anticipate the appearance of

HOW TO SELL YOUR HOME FASTER Rebecca Serwotka Rebecca Serwotka - Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward - 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!Featured on Best Buy Spain - Property TV.

Increase your chances of selling your home faster, by doing just one thing! Most people nowadays are very familiar with knowing that they need to de-clutter, clean and make the home presentable to attract a buyer. But this is not the be all and end all… least of all right now, selling in a pandemic. What you need to focus on is the asking price. No matter what any homeseller may think their property is worth, it is always the market that decides a homes value. A busy market can mean a higher value. A slow market means a lower value. I have yet to find a home to which this rule does not apply, whether it’s a dilapidated shack or a glamorous mansion. It’s the market that will decide when the price of the house, matches the product. Is your home priced accordingly? Is it updated and in proper repair? If not, the market will prove that your price has to take any renovation or repair work into account, for it to sell.

Buyers will be comparing your home against its competitors in the marketplace, so you need to put a price on that reflects its condition. If you’re reluctant to make any repairs, the price will have to reflect that. And, if you have no funds available to make any repairs, then lowering the asking price will entice someone solely on value. If a house is overpriced, the market will respond with a lack of interest, fewer viewings and no offers. Remember this… Price fixes everything! If you’re currently on the market with no offers, take action today and call my team on 966 718 392 for a free, no obligation strategy session, with me!

Costa Blanca hotels to lose 200 million due to UK quarantine The claims come from the General Secretary of the Benidorm and Costa Blanca hotel association, Hosbec. Nuria Montes put the figure of 150m euros in loses for the Benidorm area alone. Nuria Montes spoke out after talks with regional tourism leaders and Valencian President Ximo Puig. She said that the UK quarantine measures would see many hotel rooms left empty. Nuria Montes, said: “I estimate that between 200,000 and 300,000 overnight stays will be lost to our members as a result of the quarantine.” Other figures given by Hosbec included a projection that 500,000 seats will not be taken on flights to Alicante-Elche Airport,

with half of those cuts down to tour operators like TUI scrapping their holiday packages. She said: “We will see a large cascade of flight and accommodation cancellations if the UK does not back down on

the quarantine. She explained that around 15 percent of the region’s hotels that were planning to re-open for Agust had changed their minds, while 60 percent had already reopened.

Local Police clamp down on Coronavirus rule breakers The Local Police across Orihuela have issued fines to a total of 100 people for not wearing a mask over recent days and officers have also served three leisure venues with a notice of closure for non-compliance with regulations, security measures and protection regarding the Covid-19 pandemic. Ramón López, Councillor for

Citizen Security, stressed that "after the mandatory use of face masks, our officers have spent time simply informing the population about the rules. However, we have already announced that from last weekend security controls by Local Police would be intensified and people need to be aware that fines are being issued for

those found without a mask.” The Councillor added that "we must be responsible and aware of the importance of compliance with security measures, and understand that masks are necessary to protect ourselves and others. We must all be responsible and avoid possible outbreaks, it is important to comply with all the regulations."

Orihuela Mayor joins petition for Alicante airport safe air corridor The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, has joined the petition that Carlos Mazón has put together with the tourism sector of the Province of Alicante to demand that the Pedro Sánchez includes Alicante airport in its negotiations with Boris Johnson’s government. In particular, to call for a ‘safe air corridor’ from Alicante Airport stretching across the province.

According to AENA, the number of passengers who have flown to Alicante airport in June has been reduced by 98.1 percent compared to 2019 and the number of passengers who have flown from Alicante to the United Kingdom has been seen reduced by 69.3 percent, which directly affects the municipalities that are the main destination of these passengers. The Mayor said: “We have to emphasise the importance of British tourism and our town is the municipality with the most British residents on the Mediterranean coast. "We are working hard so that Orihuela is at the head of the safest tourist destinations, in fact we have recently installed of cameras on 11 of our beaches, so that in real time visitors can see the number of people in order to avoid crowds. We are the first municipality in the province that has such a system on all its beaches.”

Music for Saturday nights in Orihuela Costa The Councillor for Tourism and Festivities, Mariola Rocamora, has presented the "OH! Festival ” a musical program for Saturday nights in August on Playa Flamenca promenade. The performances will start at 10pm and feature different musical groups. The audience will be able to watch the shows for free following all the hygiene and health and safety measures against Covid-19 (mandatory use of a mask, hydro-alcoholic gel available to attendees, controlled access, limited capacity and social distancing). Therefore, a maximum capacity of 200 people has been established with a separation of one and a half meters between chairs and rows, so it is essential to book in advance to confirm attendance. The programme started on Saturday (1st August) with Either One, a semiacoustic pop-rock band with songs in English and Spanish. This Saturday, 8th August, the band Conecta2 will bring a wide repertoire loaded with the best

versions of pop and rock, both national and international, covering the 70s, 80s and 90s with songs by artists such as Queen, The Police, AC / DC, Fito and Fitipaldis, Tequila, Social Security, Bruno Mars or Daft Punk. Jazz will also feature in the “OH! Festival” with a performance of Marengo Jazz on 15th August, an elegant and

classic quartet with swing key, bossanova and soul that mixes piano, double bass, drums and voice. On Saturday 22nd August, the Oriolan group La Cochera will add a flamenco fusion and rumba touch, ending the program on Saturday 29th with the pianist Pedro Contreras, who will travel through the history of cinema with the unforgettable soundtracks of the recently deceased pianist, composer and music producer Ennio Morricone, winner of two Óscar awards and the 2020 Prince of Asturias Award. Those wishing to attend can make their registration through the Tourist Info telephone numbers: 96 530 46 45 or 96 530 27 47, or on WhatsApp: 673 836 385 or obtain more information at: www .orihuelaturistica.es. Councillor Rocamora has encouraged both tourists and residents to attend this music festival ‘organised in an incomparable setting such as the beaches of Orihuela and we hope that everyone enjoys good music during this holiday period’.

‘Promising’ Alzheimer’s blood test A blood test could spot Alzheimer's disease at the earliest stage and years before symptoms appear, studies in the US and Sweden suggest. The test looks for tiny amounts of a protein which is elevated in people with the illness. Investigators found measuring this protein, p-tau217, could predict Alzheimer's dementia with 96 percent accuracy. Experts say that with more research, it could be developed into a test doctors could offer to patients.

the disease.

treatments in the future.

Alzheimer's damages the memory and other cognitive abilities by destroying connections between nerve cells in the brain. Proteins build up in the brain and cause these cells to die.

A US team at Washington University School of Medicine found looking at ptau217 in the blood gave as good a picture of a patient's condition as a brain (PET) scan. They were able to observe elevated levels of the p-tau217 protein in as little as 4ml of blood. The team had already shown the protein could be detected in brain and spinal cord fluid of Alzheimer's patients before they develop symptoms.

Currently, Alzheimer's is diagnosed using a combination of memory tests and brain scans, once symptoms have already appeared. The idea of a dementia blood test is not new, but these two latest studies give the clearest indication yet that a protein associated with Alzheimer's disease could be used to diagnose people at a much earlier stage.

While a blood test allowing early diagnosis is unlikely to "make it to the clinic anytime soon," she said, it will now be available for research purposes.

Early diagnosis is important because it could offer more opportunities to treat

And this paves the way for them and others to benefit from potential

In order to establish whether a drug could help hold off the disease, people needed to be identified before they had experienced too much damage to their brain, said Dr Sancho.

This means people with a family history of Alzheimer's who have no symptoms could be identified and enrolled on drug trials.

Another research team at Lund University in Sweden found people with Alzheimer's had about seven times as much of p-tau217 as people without Alzheimer's - and they estimated this could be identified as much as 20 years before they develop symptoms. They also found looking at this protein allowed them to distinguish Alzheimer's patients from people with other degenerative brain conditions.

Children’s playgrounds closed across Orihuela The Department of Infrastructure of the City of Orihuela, responsible for the management and maintenance of playgrounds in the municipality, has closed all children’s playgrounds from 29th July. The decision has been taken as a temporary measure to protect children and parents from the risk of Coronavirus after it was seen that many people at local parks were not wearing masks or social distancing – despite people being made aware that they need to do both. Parks were initially closed with the State of Alarm and reopened as part of the de-escalation process but it is now apparent that it is impossible to maintain and guarantee users safety. Ensuring that people are masked, keep a minimum of

1.5m distance and there isn’t an over capacity simply cannot be overseen. A statement from the Department of Municiple Services says: “The latest known news of increased contagion by Covid19 in our area and the necessary restriction of community uses Covid stops play of elements in public Local residents are once again facilities that may carry the risk of strongly reminded of the need to contagion, especially in highly strictly comply with the vulnerable populations such as hygienic-sanitary measures children, require caution and the decreed by the authorities to adoption of this measure that avoid the risk of contagion from the Department and before Covid19: wear a mask at municipal services is expected to all times, keep your distance be lifted in the shortest possible from others, sanitiser or wash time.” hands regularly.

Hoteliers offer to pay for tourists Covid tests National hotel chains in Spain have offered to pay for foreign tourists to be PCR-tested before they return home to avoid their having to quarantine after their trip. The Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Apartments (CEHAT), responding to the UK's decision to order two weeks' quarantine for all incomers from Spain – including Brits coming back from their holidays – said its members were willing to pay for every single visitor from abroad to be tested for Covid-19 just prior to their return journey, so they could show proof upon arrival in Britain that they were not infected. PCR tests detect the virus even before symptoms begin to appear – in fact, around half of the new cases in Spain since lockdown finished are asymptomatic – and some of the reason for the sharp rise in diagnoses is due to faster and more widespread testing and contact-tracing. CEHAT's chairman Jorge Marichal said: “Covid-19 tests are essential and we hoteliers are willing to bear the cost of these, and are willing to cooperate to enable reciprocal arrangements so that our customers are not just

tested in their countries of origin, but can also be sent back home after being tested at their holiday destination so they can avoid having to quarantine on their return.” “CEHAT is calling for the European Union to take urgent health measures to guarantee maximum tourist safety both at

origin and in destination.” Hotels' funding of PCR tests for foreign visitors would not be limited to holidaymakers from Britain, but would cover all tourists coming from other countries. Boris Johnson's government announced last weekend that anyone travelling to the UK from Spain, of any nationality and including returning holidaymakers who habitually live in Britain, would have to selfisolate for 14 days, which effectively means that British tourists hoping to book a two-

week break in Spain would need to take four weeks off work. CEHAT says this is a bitter blow at a time when Spain's tourism industry was just starting to recover well and the country was already welcoming British holidaymakers, among other nationalities. “We're working very closely with the government to make British authorities see that the necessary steps need to be taken – but only the strictly necessary steps,” Marichal says. “The incidence of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Spanish tourism destinations is very low.” Outbreaks, although reported in every region, are localised, and the main affected areas are the Catalunya provinces of Barcelona and Lleida, and the Aragón province of Huesca, bordering the Pyrénées. Typical 'Brit' destinations such as the Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol, Balearic and Canary Islands have seen few, or no, new cases of Covid-19 – in fact, some parts of these areas have only had one or two at the most after more than two virus-free months. And some parts are still clear of Coronavirus altogether since the end of lockdown.

Spain reports over one million job losses during coronavirus crisis The coronavirus crisis continues to have a devastating effect on Spain’s labour market. According to the latest workforce survey (EPA) released by the National Statistics Institute (INE), nearly 1.1 million jobs were lost in the second quarter of 2020. This is an unprecedented drop in the statistical series. A quarterly fall of this scale was not even seen during the worst periods of the financial crisis that began in 2008. However, the impact of the crisis, which led to a prolonged lockdown and two-week total shutdown of all nonessential economic activity, was mitigated by the government’s ERTE furloughing scheme. Under this system, companies suffering losses from the Covid-19 pandemic and the confinement measures could temporarily send home workers or reduce their working hours. In June, the government agreed to extend the scheme until 30th September. This furloughing scheme and other measures introduced during the economic hibernation helped to contain the number of job losses. Taking into account these furloughed workers, the INE estimates that 13.9 million Spaniards effectively worked between April and June, out of a total of 18.6 million formally in the workforce. But while the EPA is the best measurement of activity in the labour

market in terms of employment, it provides less clear data on the state of unemployment. According to the survey, unemployment rose by just 55,000 people in the second quarter, a figure that is grossly distorted due to the difficulties of meeting the EPA’s definition of an active job search during the confinement period. It is likely that many people who lost their job have been classified as inactive – neither employed or actively seeking employment – because they were unable to look for work during the coronavirus lockdown. This would explain the discrepancy between the number of people who lost their jobs – 1,074,000 – and the number of people who became unemployed – 55,000. According to the EPA, the number of people considered to be out of the workforce in Spain rose from 16.5 million to 17.6 million in the second quarter. As a direct consequence of this, the workforce

fell significantly, from 22.9 million to 21.9 million between April and June. This figure, linked both to economic variations and demographic and migratory changes, normally tends to fluctuate less than the other workforce indicators. Given that the confinement measures have come to an end, many people are expected to now actively look for work, meaning that unemployment figures could rise by tens of thousands in the next quarter. This, however, depends on whether health authorities introduce new restrictions to control the rise in Covid-19 cases seen in the past few weeks. The second quarter between April and June is traditionally the best period for employment in Spain. It coincides with the start of the tourism and the harvesting seasons, while the good weather promotes building work. Temporary work contracts typically boost staff numbers. But not this year. The entire second quarter reflected the impact of the coronavirus crisis, unlike the first quarter, which included the first two weeks of March before the declaration of the state of alarm. According to the EPA, a total of 3.37 million people are unemployed in Spain, the unemployment rate is 15.3%, and the workforce has fallen to 18.6 million.

Shoppers switch to own branded goods Own-branded goods in supermarkets have soared in popularity since the Covid-19 pandemic hit Spain, with their purchases accounting for 40 percent of the total and expected to continue to rise in the next few years. According to researchers at Adecco recruitment agencies and Bain Company, lockdown and the threat of a second wave of the virus sparked a concerted effort among Spanish households to save money on groceries and non-edible everyday products, partly because of an actual loss in income through temporary business closures and lay-offs, or a fear of this becoming the case. As at 2018, own-branded goods made up 36.2 percent of the average shopping trolley, and are now up to 40 percent - an apparently small rise, but in financial terms, a sizeable extra income for their manufacturers. So-called 'premium', or higherend branded goods, have suffered as a result, although this does not necessarily impact on manufacturers' profits: Many of the top brand producers also make 'unnamed' cheaper goods

and, in some cases, there is very little difference other than name and packaging. In Spain, there has never been any 'stigma' around stores' own brands; in fact, they tend to have a much larger presence on the shelves and are generally of very high quality, meaning independent brands are typically

only chosen for personal preference where a consumer 'gets on better with' a particular type or simply likes the taste of specific foods by Danone, Heinz or Valor, for example. A shopper in a Spanish supermarket would not normally choose an independent brand over the store's own label based upon a perception of its being of better quality, if they had not had experience of both. EAE Business School has said Mercadona's own brands –

Hacendado for food, Deliplus for cosmetics and toiletries and Bosque Verde for household products – and Lidl's are the two supermarket labels that have most increased in purchase volume this year. Co-author of the Bain & Company report, Ignacio Otero, says an upward trend in ownbranded goods choices was seen during the financial crisis years, from around 2008 onwards. Over these difficult years, discount shops and cheap, but quality brands were able to expand their market share – between 2008 and 2013 inclusive, these grew by nearly 10 percentage points. In a survey Adecco carried out, answered by 800 people, 53 percent of respondents admitted they had sought out cheaper supermarket produce during lockdown – although 34 percent reported no difference and 13 percent said they had actually spent more. For those who had reduced their spending, a total of 35 percent said they had consciously opted more for supermarket ownbranded goods, whilst 29 percent said they saved money by taking advantage of in-store offers and discounts.

Hidden Gems tours are back for 2020! Tabarca Island

Along with the ‘new normal’ we have all been able to start doing the things we love and missed during lockdown and deescalation; eat on terraces, meet friends for a drink and take a much needed break. The desire to escape after a long confinement, but in a safe and healthy environment, has seen many locals contact local Spanish lady Begona Josa del Portillo who organises the range of ‘Discover the Real Spain’ trips and tours. These aim to allow hidden gems to be explored expats and holiday makers alike. In response Begona has organised two brand new trips, the first sees the return of the well-known and much loved ‘Wine Tasting with a Difference´ tours which have taken the local community by storm over the last two years- but this year they are to a different bodega. The second is to the beautiful island of Tabarca.

Wine Tasting Tour The Wine Tasting Tour will take place on 14th August at Viña Elena, a traditional family run vineyard on the outskirts of Jumilla. You will start your day with a traditional Spanish breakfast en route and on arrival will be given a full guided tour, in English, of the picturesque vineyard countryside and an insight into wine growing and production. The informative tour will be followed by a light lunch at the bodega with traditional local dishes... and accompanied by some of their gorgeous wine, of course. There will also be the opportunity to buy wine and local produce in the bodega shop. The day will end with a visit to the historic town of Jumilla. The tour, including breakfast and lunch is priced at 30€ and due to sanitary restrictions places are limited to 25 people – so book now to avoid disappointment and arrange you pick up/drop off point. Call Begona on: 622 188 772.

This fabulous day out will see you transfer from the coach to a stylish catamaran to sail to the Isle of Tabarca. The trip will take place on 24th August and tickets are priced at 35€. The coach will arrive at Santa Pola, where there will be time to take a stroll or grab a coffee before setting sail. There will be plenty of time to explore Tabarca, sunbathe or have lunch in one of the many fabulous restaurants. The catamaran will depart at 4pm.

To book your place and arrange pick up call Begona on 622 188 772.

Four arrested in Almoradí drugs bust Guardia Civil arrested four people, three men and a woman, in Almoradí. All are accused of suspected drug trafficking. Officers reported that two major drug ‘outlets’ have been dismantled – one operating out of a private residence and the other in a cannabis ‘club’ which has been active since April. Police had been watching the operation since mid April when a high number of people were noticed breaking lockdown restrictions during the state of alarm. Surveillance revealed that a couple, now

under arrest, used to go down the street in breach of restrictions- and hold brief conversations with various people, which ended in drugs being exchanged. After the state of alarm ended, the surveillance continued and it was learned that the woman also regularly frequented a cannabis club, along with two other people, where they were also seen supplying drugs to clients. Both the house and the headquarters of the cannabis club were raided and officers seized a large quantity of drugs including

43 ecstasy tablets, 200 grams of hashish, 1 kilo of marijuana buds, 15 grams of cannabis resin, 1 gram of ecstasy in powder and a small quantity of cocaine; as well as 3,000 euro in cash, 4 precision scales and several hundred individual bags for the transport of substances. The detainees, a total of four people - two Spanish men (aged 28, 23), one Uruguayan (26) and one Spanish woman (27) - were arrested for an alleged crime of drug trafficking, and were released with charges pending a court date.

13 year old caught driving A vehicle driven by a 13-year-old boy, whose short stature meant that he could barely see over the steering wheel, was stopped in the early hours of Wednesday morning in Alicante city centre. Local police have reported that the car was circulating near Lo Morant Park, and that the officers stopped the car because they were surprised by the short stature of the driver as he passed.

They found that a 13-year-old boy was behind the wheel, barely able to see a few inches above the dashboard. After verifying the identity, address and age of the child, his relatives were contacted and summoned to take charge of the minor and the vehicle, while local police have filed proceedings in order the matter to be passed to the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office.

DIGITAL HEARING IS MOVING OFFICES Digital Hearing is moving its offices from 7 Calle los Arcos, Ciudad Quesada, to 17 Calle los Arcos, Ciudad Quesada. We are going just 200 metres down the same road on the same side to bigger office premises in the Business Centre at number 17 (the building with the big glass frontage). For the past ten years we have been operating very successfully from our current office, but now the increase in business is such that we have outgrown the premises at number 7. As well as the business outgrowing the premises, it has also outgrown a single hearing aid dispenser’s capacity so at the same time as the move we will be welcoming an additional British hearing aid dispenser, Mr Tom Lutener RHAD BSHAA, who will join the

practice. Tom Lutener is a fullyqualified and licensed United Kingdom and Spanish hearing aid dispenser. He has recently moved to Spain in order to join Digital Hearing and says he is looking forward to incorporating a healthy lifestyle aspect to add to and support the technological solutions offered to those suffering from hearing loss and its associated problems. Hence, simultaneously Digital Hearing will become part of a broader organisation – PROTEA WELLNESS AUDIOLOGY. Protea Wellness Audiology will introduce a new, wider and more diverse range of hearing aids, as well as hearing, health and support systems, and the international worldwide products of both the Oticon and Bernafon hearing groups

will be added to the portfolio offered by Digital Hearing at Quesada. Digital Hearing will continue to offer the same high-quality service to all its existing and new customers. It will support, repair and maintain all existing hearing systems and will supply accessories, batteries and other support products as before. We are sure our readers will join Mike Burke in welcoming Tom Lutener to the practice in its new home, and we hope to meet you there soon.

With Love, Comes Hope: Stories & Inspiration during the 2020 Pandemic Independent publisher Acclaimed Books Limited this week releases a book written entirely by everyday people around the world, in real life situations, recording their thoughts, experiences and views during the Coronavirus pandemic. The 2020 pandemic caught the entire population of our world off-guard, cost countless lives, and impacted everyone on this planet. But its legacy has united us in a common cause to support each other, be generous with our time and resources, and show compassion to our fellow humans, whether they are near or far. Countries embraced lockdowns resulting in new realities for many people. It became a period of reflection, an opportunity to make lifechanges, assess work/life balance and maybe discover new talents, thoughts, ideas and activities. ‘With Love Comes Hope’ is an anthology of poetry and prose. Peter Lihou, the Managing Director of Acclaimed Books; Maureen Moss, an experienced travel guide and Lisa Cronin, an

ex-military medic, initiated the idea for the book. Lisa Cronin said ‘The world needs to hear about the good, not the continuous onslaught of despair. People need hope…. I

truly believe that with love, comes hope.’ ‘I wanted to capture the way this experience manifests itself in

the lives of individuals across a range of circumstances in as wide a geographical area as possible,’ explained Peter Lihou, while Maureen Moss added, ‘We really wanted to hear experiences from real people in the real world.’ Proceeds from the book will be donated to international humanitarian charity: Bridge2 (http://www.bridge2.gg) ‘With Love, Comes Hope’ features the work of more than seventy contributors from every continent. They detail their memories and hopes for the future, their dreams and the practicalities of their daily lives - often warm, passionate, witty – a must read! Extraordinary writing from ordinary people! 'With Love, Comes Hope: Stories & Inspiration during the 2020 Pandemic’ will be available in print and Kindle versions from Amazon sites worldwide from 31st July. Blood test for cancer A blood test can pick up cancers up to four years before symptoms appear, researchers say, in the latest study to raise hopes of early detection. A team led by researchers in China say the non-invasive blood test – called PanSeer – detects cancer in 95 percent of individuals who have no symptoms but later receive a diagnosis.

“We demonstrated that five types of cancer can be detected through a DNA methylation-based blood test up to four years before conventional diagnosis,” the team wrote in the journal Nature Communications. They said the test does not predict cancer but picks up on cancerous growths that had not yet caused symptoms or been spotted by other methods. Such tests, known as liquid biopsies, have become the focus of much research as they offer a non-invasive way to screen patients. The new study is not the first to report positive results for a blood test for early

detection of cancer. However, the team said the research was exciting because it showed cancers could be detected before patients showed any indication of symptoms – something few studies have shown before. Overall, 414 samples were used from participants who remained cancer-free at least five years after the blood was taken, and 191 samples were used from participants who were diagnosed with stomach, colorectal, liver, lung or oesophageal cancer within four years of the blood being collected. The team also used samples from biobanks from 223 patients already diagnosed with one of the five cancers. The results revealed PanSeer flagged cancer in 88 percent of participants who had already been diagnosed and in 95% of participants who were not diagnosed with cancer but later went on to develop the disease. The test correctly identified those without cancer 96 percdent of the time.

She's Unreasonable My wife said she is divorcing me after 6 years of marriage. We’ve no children. She kept on at me for what felt like an eternity because she said I refused to do anything around the house, or helped with it's upkeep and running, paying the bills etc. I hate house work, and I told her so. In the end, she told me that not only did I not do anything to help around the house, but added to her problems by never putting anything away and constantly leaving things in a mess. Throughout our marriage she repeatedly said that she did not want kids with me, because I was too much of a kid myself. It just felt like nagging to me, so most nights I went down to the pub. She finally said she’d had enough and filed for divorce. I can’t understand why she would divorce me for such lame, pathetic reasons. Perhaps her reasons are not so lame, or pathetic. I would suggest that it wasn’t the fact per se that you don't like housework, but more the point here is that you had no respect for her when you decided you weren’t going to lift a finger to help in your marriage. Housework is no one person’s job, particularly in these modern times when couples both work. Refusal or failure to help with the load and leaving the work to just one person, speaks volumes I am afraid. Why should one person do it all? I am afraid I agree with your wife; you had a distinct lack of respect for your partner and from your wife’s point of view she would have concluded that you didn’t love her enough to want to help the cause. She put up with this for 6 years, and gave you the opportunity to change. When you didn’t she decided she’d had enough. I am afraid you’ve only yourself to blame, because that is no marriage.

Get Set for Summer Temperatures More Female Bikers Although many people still ignore the warnings, it is common knowledge that animals and humans will die if left in a hot car, now a study conducted by the RACC Automobile Association, in conjunction with the Swiss Automobile Club, has shed light on some of the effects of vehicles in the sun. Among the key findings of the study, it has been confirmed that if a vehicle left in direct sunlight, where the outside temperature is 35°C, standing without air conditioning, the inside temperature of the vehicle will reach a dangerous 55°C, or 131°F. A study in America stated that high environmental temperatures can be dangerous to the human body. In the range of 90 to 105°F, heat cramps and exhaustion may occur. Between 105 and 130°F, heat exhaustion is almost certain, and environmental temperature over 130°F is likely to lead to heatstroke. The RACC study wanted to confirm if the colour of a car can impact the internal temperature. They chose two different coloured vehicles for this comparison, a white one and a black one. They found that in the black car, the temperature reached up to 17°F more than the white one. As for the myths concerning

leaving the windows open a fraction to decrease the temperature inside, the results under lab conditions revealed just a 2 degree difference, which is why the advice of never leaving a pet in a parked car, even with the windows open, is such an important one to heed. The advice concluded from the report is to try to remain stationary in direct sunlight for as shorter time as possible. Parking in the shade or under a carport

will help lower the temperature. Using windscreen shades when parked will also help lower the internal temperature, as will covering exposed areas such as the dashboard, and especially metallic features inside the vehicle, which can cause burns when touched. Skin damage can occur from a temperature of 45°C. The internal elements like the dashboard, the seats, the steering wheel, or gear lever can reach temperatures approaching 80°C if they are not

protected. Never leave anybody inside a car in the sun, although children and animals are more susceptible to damage caused by heat. Leaving the windows open, if the place you are parked is secure, can reduce the temperature slightly, as can choosing a lighter colour car when you purchase it. Take time before you start your trip to open all the vehicle doors and windows and let fresh air flow through for a few minutes before entering. This will help to avoid high temperatures during the trip. Be conscious of security if you do this though. You should also be aware that using air conditioning can also be detrimental, especially if the difference between the interior and exterior temperatures are severe, so make sure you adjust the setting accordingly. If you´re wondering the best temperature to set your air conditioning to, the DGT recommends settings between 22 to 24 degrees, whilst the Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE) the recommended would be between 21 and 23 degrees. If the air conditioner is above or below these limits, it will increase the fatigue of the driver and his reaction time will be slower, so there will be a greater probability of suffering accidents on the road.

The UNESPA employers' association has conducted a study into the profile of twowheeled vehicle users, concluding in detail the 'live' mobile fleet of motorcycles and mopeds, and their users. The report leaves two main conclusions: in Spain there are now more motorcycles and more female bikers. Thus, the analysis points out that in 2018,the last year for which data is available, there are 3,230,000 million twowheeled vehicles on Spain´s roads, with an increase of almost half a million units since 2010. The growth is largely due to the rise in the number of motorcycles, 100,000 more in 2018 compared to the previous year (+ 6%); and scooters, with almost 40,000 more (+ 4%). In contrast, mopeds fell by 20,000 units in one year and 300,000 less in the period 20102018. "The motorcycle has continued to grow since 2012. And not only does growth continue, but it accelerates," said ANESDOR general secretary José María Riaño during the presentation of the study. Likewise, the study indicates a general increase in the number of bikers. Barcelona is a new city when it comes to bikers, especially

females, with a quarter of all motorcycles driven by women. Other municipalities where more than 20% of motorcyclists are female are Gerona, San Sebastián, Mijas, Fuengirola, Hospitalet del Llobregat and Cádiz. According to the study, the factors that play in favour of the growing love of women for two wheels are several: the new habits of urban mobility, the development of materials that allow motorcycles to be lighter

and the existence of a strong local biker culture. Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia are the provinces with the highest number of twowheelers in absolute terms. On the other hand, in proportional terms, (vehicles per inhabitant), Cádiz is the province with the most mopeds (2,576 units per 100,000 inhabitants), Malaga, the one with the most motorcycles (5,750) and Gerona leads in scooters (4,720).

Adding the three types, the provinces of Gerona, Granada and Malaga have the most units, with a ratio of one two-wheeled vehicle for every 10 inhabitants. Regarding the cities with more than 75,000 inhabitants with the highest concentration of highdisplacement motorcycles, the study reveals that eight of the first ten are municipalities located in the Community of Madrid: Rozas, Parla, Rivas-Vaciamadrid, Fuenlabrada, Alcorcón, Getafe, Móstoles and Torrejón de Ardoz. The remaining two are in the Canary Islands: Telde and San Cristóbal de la Laguna. The study also analyses drivers and, although women are increasingly present on motorcycles or scooters, the typical biker is a man between 45 and 48 years old. It also reveals that young people look for more powerful motorcycles and that those over 45, on the other hand, opt for less powerful motorcycles. By size, 30% of the motorcycles are between 76 and 150 cubic centimetres, and 25% between 500 and 750cc. Regarding manufacturers, Japanese brands (Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki) account for half of the scooters and mopeds that exist in our country.

Reality Check We all think we are better drivers than the next person, but the reality on the roads is that we often fall into a trap of drowsiness, tiredness, and distractions when driving, all of which are activities behind many traffic accidents, especially when it comes to long journeys. This is confirmed by the results of the 7th Barometer of Responsible Driving carried out by the VINCI Autoroutes Foundation to learn about the evolution of the behaviours and mentalities of European drivers. Fatigue and drowsiness According to the study, 35% of European drivers confess that they get nervous when they are going to make a long journey by car. In the case of Spain, this figure rises to 41%. However, fatigue does not prevent 34% of the drivers surveyed (26% in Spain) from getting behind the wheel. Regarding dangerous behaviour, 78% of European drivers admit that they look away from the road for more than two seconds (in Spain the figure is 73%). In addition, half say they talk on the phone while driving using Bluetooth (a system that also alters attention). In the case of Spain, this figure drops to 45%. When it comes to distractions, 13% of those surveyed acknowledge having suffered or have almost suffered an

accident by falling asleep while driving and 11% for using the mobile. Asked if they respect the safety distance, 61% say that they do not (which drops to 55% in the case of Spain), although 51% consider that breaching this safety standard is one of the main causes of accidents suffered by personnel who works on the highways.

Drive safely and serenely On the Barometer, Bernardette Moreau, general delegate of the VINCI Autoroutes Foundation, has pointed out that "the tendency of drivers to be distracted when driving makes them forget the collective implications of driving and, consequently, even the consequences of their behaviour for everyone else". For this reason, given the trips this summer and taking into account the context of the health crisis we are experiencing, we must not forget "driving responsibly and calmly to contribute to the safety and serenity of

everyone on the road," Moreau said. The Barometer The VINCI Autoroutes Foundation has commissioned the IPSOS company to prepare the 7th Barometer of Responsible Driving. This study also allows us to see the evolution of riskybehaviours and good practices, which can be useful when proposing prevention strategies. To prepare this Barometer, 12,400 people over the age of 16 and from 11 European countries were asked on the Internet between February 28 and March 24, 2020 (at least 1,000 people were asked in each country). Quotas of sex, age, profession, region, and population size have been considered. Losing our nerves when we are driving can lead us to behave incorrectly. According to the Barometer, 16% of European drivers admit that they "become someone else" when they get behind the wheel. In the case of Spaniards, it is 15%. In addition, about 60% of those surveyed acknowledge that they sometimes insult other drivers and more than 80% confess that they have once been afraid of the behaviour of other drivers (data reaches 89% in the case of Spaniards).

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

To be fair, if I’d have been done for pace as often as Cesar Azpilicueta in the first half of the FA Cup Final I suspect my hamstring might have felt a tweak as well. I’m not sure if it was the first time Kieran Tierney pinged down the outside of Chelsea’s captain for YoPierre to accelerate on to, the second time or even the third time that suggested Frank Lampard might want to do something about it before it cost his side an equaliser. By that point, ‘Dave’ had decided the only option was to hitch a ride on the back of Arsenal’s main threat outside of the penalty area. The only problem with that was he missed the first time, and by the time he’d got hold of his man - like a father trying to grab his toddler who has just made a break for the cute little puppy over the road - he was in the area and the penalty was given. Lamps was right - Chelsea only have themselves to blame for losing that final. But Lampard is part of Chelsea and therefore needs to accept his portion. The team started playing as if they had won it already after Christian Pulisic’s early opener - and what a beautiful touch it was from Giroud to put it in his path - and that gave Arsenal the ‘just put it behind Cesar’ motivation they needed to take control. Of course, this was a final we hope never to see again. No, I don’t mean the two teams in question or even the standard of the match. I’m talking the

obvious. Emeli Sande signing on the roof of Wembley Stadium. What on Earth was that about? I thought we’d seen enough of her at London 2012 to last us a lifetime. Still, if the FA Cup Final has to happen without fans the last thing we need is Abide With Me not being belted out, right? Early on, I was dead against Arsenal winning this match - and not just because I was hoping David Luiz might choose to have another one of those days. It was the numbers and names on their shirts. Did that style just come out of a lucky dip? Sure, Real Madrid have got a little funky with their fonts over the years but they are Real Madrid - they are typically good enough to do whatever the hell they like. Arsenal? Not so much - even if they did prove to be very, very good here. Some Chelsea fans have pointed to Kovacic’s second yellow as being a turning point - not on your nelly. Sure, he should never have been sent off for that - but the gig was up well before that point. Arsenal looked dangerous time and time again, and the winner from their skipper was one of the FA Cup Final goals for me. The way he went past Kurt Zouma, the Frenchman ended up sitting socially-distanced in the stands with the choir who sang the

National Anthem. You have to give credit to Mikel Arteta at the same time of raising an eyebrow of doubt in the direction of Lampard. Arteta has slotted into the Arsenal way of life pretty quickly winning FA Cup Finals is typically what Arsenal do in this era. Lampard, however - well, losing big matches at Wembley could quickly become a thing for him after his Derby experience and now this. Lampard has a huge 12 months in his fledgeling coaching career coming up. It was all well and good picking the kids when he had to and the pressure was off. That free hit of a season has been and gone now and do we still believe that Chelsea finishing in the top four was unexpected? Given how Tottenham imploded and Arsenal were way off the Premier League pace, not finishing in the top four would have been a failure in retrospect - and now Frank has to show us how good he is in the transfer market. Chelsea have gone big on two attacking players so far in Werner and Ziyech - Havertz looks like he may well be on the way too. Let’s just hope there’s a bit of spare cash kicking around for a new goalkeeper, three central defenders and a left-back, right? Arteta’s primary focus right now will be to lock Auba in a room somewhere

and refuse to let him out until he signs a new deal. It’s not so much how much they’d get if they had to sell him, but how much it would cost to get anyone remotely near as good and willing to play for a side not challenging at the top, albeit yet. If they lose him, next season looks like pushing for Europa League via the league placings and not a lot more. Still, life is rosier in North London than it is in Geordieland right now. Hands up, and be honest - did anyone really think this takeover was going to happen? I know I didn’t - and not for any of the ‘fit and proper’ tests or live streaming piracy reasons. I was gambling on it more being to do with Mike Ashley and his actual lack of desire to sell the club. I mean, when you can make £17m from a deal not happening you can probably start to understand why he wasn’t on the phone to the Premier League each morning demanding they get a Matthew McCaugnachy ‘giddy-up’, can’t you? The club has been for sale longer than I can remember and to fail to sell it once could be considered careless. Twice, unfortunate. Three times, bad luck. Four times - well, you’re having them all on really, aren’t you Mike? As the legends over at ‘Have I Got News For You’ were quick to point out the human rights side of things must certainly not be overlooked. There is every chance that the Saudi’s took a look at Sports Direct and thought it could damage their reputation. Still, fans of Newcastle - at least that means you’ll still have Steve Bruce next season. Every cloud.
