Global health experts say no second lockdown for Spain See Main Advert on page 27

In direct contradiction to recent reports of a lockdown on 18th September, the Director of Public Health for the World Health Organisation, Maria Neira, has said that it does not believe that Spain will return to a general confinement.

This is a conclusion that is supported by Fernando Simon, Head of Spain’s Centre of the Co-ordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies. Although in the midst of a global pandemic you can never say never, experts agree that the decision to return to a lockdown situation would “have to be justified by a ‘very alarming’ epidemiological situation” and both believe that this can be avoided. Whilst there has been an increase in cases, Maria Neria said that the circumstances that would require another lockdown, do not exist in Spain. Currently all outbreaks are well controlled, there is no uncontrolled community transmission (a high number of infected of which the origin of the contagion is unknown.) There is also containment; none of the

outbreaks are affecting an area widespread enough for experts to believe that a large territory is at risk. And finally, the third reason that a lockdown is not required is that currently and into the foreseeable future, the autonomous communities are implementing adequate measures to control and contain local outbreaks themselves. Therefore, there is no need for nationwide control tactics such as a total lockdown. The Costa Blanca People contacted the British Embassy in Madrid to discuss the claims of an imminent lockdown. A spokesperson said: “We're not aware of the plans mentioned. Governments at regional and national levels (in Spain, the UK and elsewhere) are continually monitoring the pandemic, especially recent outbreaks,

and adapting their plans to ensure societies (especially health services) are best able to cope. The UK works with countries around the world to share information and best-practice in response to the COVID19 pandemic.”

Torrevieja drug bust The Civil Guard has arrested nine men in Torrevieja in an anti-drug operation in which five "very active" selling points have been dismantled. The detainees have been arrested on charges of allegedly belonging to a criminal organisation, crimes against public health and fraud of electricity. The investigation began in October 2019, after a complaint by a resident about the inconvenience caused by the constant movement of people, even in the early hours of the morning, which was taking place in nearby house. The Guardia Civil investigation led officers to believe that it was being used by an alleged criminal organisation led by several brothers. The brothers co-ordinated an team of people who sold drugs throughout the city or acted as suppliers for those sellers who ran out of "substances." The sale of drugs was not limited to the house in question, but after a while, the gang took over the Torrevieja promenade, an area with a large influx of tourists and,

it focused particularly on the fun fair, where there are high numbers of minors. To stock up on drugs, one of the leaders travelled almost daily to the outskirts of Murcia, where he acquired small quantities of drugs. This technique was carried out so that the damage would be

minimal, in the case of being stopped by the Police. Following the investigation proceedings and having determined the role of each individual within the organisation, the judicial authority was requested to be able enter five homes:

four in Torrevieja and one in San Pedro del Pinatar. In total, 115 grams of marijuana, 200 grams of cutting substance, a precision scale, three doses of doping substances and the two vehicles used for the trips were seized. Officers also found 11,000 euros in cash, a rather significant amount considering that none of the gang members had known paid work and they were all applying for public aid. The nine people, aged between 25 and 50 years old and of Moroccan and Algerian nationality, were all arrested for the crimes listed above. Once brought to justice, provisional release was decreed with charges, pending trial. With this operation, the officers of the Torrevieja Civil Guard Investigation Area have managed to deactivate five drug sales points in the municipality. However, this has only been possible thanks to the collaboration of local residents who alerted the authorities to the possibility of crimes being committed.

Two yearold drowns in La Zenia A two-year-old died in a swimming pool accident in La Zenia on Sunday afternoon, whilst on holiday with his four siblings and his parents. The family had only arrived two days before. The boy is believed to have left the house unnoticed and was found unresponsive in the pool

when his parents began searching for him. The tragedy happened at the communal pool of the Residential Sonia, off Calle Mayor in La Zenia. The family had been to the beach and returned to the semi-detached house at around 6pm.

About 40 minutes later they realised that the toddler wasn’t in the house and began to look for him in the urbanisation. The boy’s 13 year old sister saw his body in the pool and raised the alarm. The Guardia Civil arrived on the scene but there was nothing that could be done for the child.

Possible lockdown for Villajoyosa Popular seaside town Villajoysa, which is just about an hour drive from Torrevieja, is in danger of going into a local lockdown due to concerning levels of coronavirus cases. The Marina Baixa Public Health department recently reported a surge in local cases, taking the number from 14 to 21 in a few days. Five of the cases are thought to have been transmitted during family gatherings and social time with friends and heightened because many cases are asymptomatic. A number of cases appear to be isolated and trackers are now investigating contact.

Mayor Andreu Verdu said that they ‘may have to adopt more drastic measures which will include confining the town if necessary’ and called for people in the municipality to act responsibly to stop the spread of Covid-19 after Regional Public Health Director, Teresa Revilla claimed there had been a ‘relaxation’ in what people have been doing previously. The council, has increased the cleaning and disinfection of parks and communal areas; with Local Police clamping down on mask wearing, especially among young people.

Two new charging points for electric vehicles The Orihuela Councillor for the Environment, Dámaso Aparicio, has announced the installation of two new double charging points for electric vehicles that will be located in Orihuela. The new stations have been subsidised by the Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness (IVACE) as part of the "Energy saving and efficiency in transport” program. The funding equates to a grant of 16,602.40 euros, which represents 80 percent of the cost. The remainder of the balance will be covered by municipal contribution, since the works amount to a total of 20,753.00 euros. Councillor Aparicio explained that "one of the electric charging

points will be installed in El Palmeral, more specifically in the Casa de los Verdú, and the other will be located near the Orihuela City Council car park." The installation of equipment, cabling, auxiliary systems, civil works and engineering will soon begin to allow the installation of the two new electrical systems with double plugs that will join those already installed throughout the municipality. "Orihuela is the city in the province with the most

recharging points, so we want to continue promoting sustainability and environmentally friendly transport, which implies a reduction in Co2 emissions", explained the Councillor, who stressed the need to "make new vehicle recharging points available on public roads so that people can use them free of charge".

Tourist attractions to close early The well-know Benidorm theme parks of Aqualadia and Mundomar are predicting that the lack of tourists will force them to close early this year, ending the season on 23rd August. The parks had already been forced to open late on 3rd July and with limited capacity due to the coronavirus pandemic. Both parks are owned by the

same owner, the Santa Maria Group, and a spokesman said that the current visitor number the the predicted footfall forecast are forcing them to go ahead with the plan to shut down before the end of August. The spokesman said: “The predictions for the rest of the month are not good for people

coming to the parks due to lower tourism caused by the coronavirus.” The previously expected boost to local tourism and to Benidorm visitors in particular by British holiday makers was shattered by the UK government’s introduction of a 14-day quarantine period for all travellers returning from Spain.

Faced with this situation, the investigators carried out various discreet and intermittent surveillance operations, in which they were able to verify that the

company had three warehouses where 45 or 50 people worked in two shifts.

Once they had the necessary information, the officers established a special operation in which they had the support of the Alicante Labour Inspectorate within the framework of the Agreement signed between the Ministry of Employment of Social Security and the Ministry of the Interior in the fight against irregular employment and Social Security fraud. The Assigned Unit of the National Police to the Valencian Community also participated in the operation. The officers conducted an inspection of the workplace where they located a total of 24 workers of different nationalities spread over the three company warehouses. Of these, only two were registered with Social

Security and the rest said they did not have a work contract and worked 12-hour days without any breaks.

In addition, seven of the workers were irregularly in Spain, which means they were not legal entities. Continuing with the investigation, the police officers discovered that of the total number of workers in the company, which was almost 50, only 6 were registered and with an employment contract.

New boardwalk for La Mata The Councillor for Beaches Councillor, Antonio Vidal, has reported on the repairs that have been carried out on the La Mata Pedestrian Path, in the sections between Germany Avenue and Calle Mayor, and in the section of Avenida del Mediterráneo up to the beach.

The repairs have been carried out by members of the Green Brigade's beach division and have seen the replacing of wood that was in poor condition. This work follows other repairs and conservation projects that have been carried out on other sections along the La Mata Pedestrian Path.

National Police Officers in Alicante have arrested a 30-year-old person of Mexican nationality accused of an alleged crime against the rights of workers. The man was the sole administrator of a company based in Crevillent which employed foreign citizens in an irregular situation, without work contracts and who were subjected to long working hours in 12-hour shifts. The investigation has been carried out by officers of Group III of the UCRIF (Unit Against Immigration Networks and Documentary Falsehoods) of the Alicante Provincial Police Station, after learning that an industrial company was employing people in an irregular situation and without a contract.

House sales plummet due to health crisis Another effect of the pandemic in the economic sphere is the effects on the provincial housing market. In June, a period in which the state of emergency was in full force for almost the entire month, 1,688 sales transactions of houses, a figure that represents 45.6 percent less than in the same month of the year before, according to information published recently by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). This decrease in the province is higher than the national average fall of 34.3 percent and the regional one, which stood at 43.9 percent. However, the data is nothing more than a reflection of the impact that the health crisis is having on the national and provincial productive sectors due to the confinement, as well as the closure of borders to prevent the spread of the virus. The border closure is the one that has had the most detrimental effect on the Alicante real estate sector, given that a large part of the sale of homes in the province is destined for foreign market buyers. Even so, Alicante is the

second province where an increase in operations were registered in June, only behind Madrid, where 3,817 house sales were quantified. Valencian Community On the other hand, the sale of

homes fell 43.8 percent in the Valencian Community in June compared to the same month in 2019, the second largest drop in Spain after Galicia, to 3,450 operations. Of these 3,450 homes transmitted in the equator of the year, the vast majority, 3,132, were free and the remaining 318 were protected. In addition, 2,922 were used homes and 528, new homes, according to the data. On the other hand, the properties transferred amounted to 14,103, which represents a decline of 38.8 percent, compared to the 33.2 percent drop across

the whole of Spain. Of those 1,873 farm transfers, 11,626 were urban and 2,477 rustic. Of the first type, 5,994 were sales, 2,040 inheritance, 291 donations, seven swaps and 3,294 transmissions of another type. In the whole of Spain, the sale of homes fell by 34.3 percent in June in relation to the same month of 2019, to add 27,221 operations. With this decline, marked by the health crisis, the sale of homes has recorded negative year-on-year rates for four consecutive months after having fallen by 18.6% in March, 39.2 percent in April and 53.7 percent in May. The fall in home sales in June was the consequence of a 36.4 percent decline in used housing transactions, to 21,794 transactions, and a 24.5 percent cut in new home transactions, to 5,427 transactions. Around 91 percent of the dwellings transmitted by sale in the sixth month of the year were free dwellings and 8.8 percent were protected.

Councillor Valverde said "we want to provide the public with all those means and utensils with which the contagion can be avoided, so we began to investigate the market for noncontact hydroalcholic gel devices that do not require human resources to replace them". The manager of the Oriolan

company Galante Inversiones, which has patented "SensoDrop", José Vicente Escudero, welcomed the positive reception of this project by the local government and explained that "this dispenser is intended for the general public, we are still developing the product where we will incorporate an APP that will reflect the number of times it is used or in what time slots, one percent of the benefits of this sustainable system will go to research against Covid-19”. Garden waste collection lorry The Councillor for Street Cleaning and RSU, Dámaso Aparicio, has announced reinforcements to the pruning collection service in Orihuela Costa with an additional octopus truck with a driver. This contract, which amounts to 49,984.00 euros (VAT included), will last for one year with the option of a second year. This allows an increase in the daily collection service of pruning and garden waste across the summer to improve the current service.

As Councillor Aparicio explained, the first pruning of the season usually occurs on the occasion of Easter, “but this year due to the state of alarm and confinement, this has not been the case. However, with the arrival of visitors and holiday-makers in recent weeks, the presence of these plant cuttings in the streets has increased significantly as a result of the maintenance being made in private and community gardens”. With the additional new truck the

Department of Street Cleaning now has more capacity to provide the service with the ‘octopus trucks’ to collect cuttings on the streets in morning and afternoon in shifts. Don’t just dump However, for this service to be effective, it is necessary to communicate with the department before leaving large amounts of garden waste on a public road, even of there are bins there.

Child drowns at Quesada villa A 4-year-old boy drowned last Wednesday afternoon after being rescued from a swimming pool in Ciudad Quesada. The youngster was treated at the scene by the SAMU ambulance, who performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Medics battled for 40 minutes to save the child but were unable to revive him. The little boy, of Belgian nationality, but of Maghreb origin, had arrived that

afternoon with his family at the home of relatives in Quesada. The family were on their way to Castellón, but decided to spend the night at the home of relatives, before carrying on their journey the following morning. The little boy was left alone in the pool and when his relatives went to call him he was lying motionless. One of his relatives jumped into the pool to get him out and another, a nurse by profession, tried to revive him. Seeing that the little boy was not responding, the family called 112. First to arrive at the house were officers of Rojales Local Police, who performed several resuscitation manoeuvres until medical help arrived. The SAMU ambulance arrived and continued with

resuscitation. The judicial authority removed the body of the child at 8:30pm which was been transferred to the Forensic Anatomical Institute where an autopsy will be performed. The Mayor of Rojales, Antonio Pérez, visited the scene of the accident to offer his condolences to the relatives. Senor Pérez has warned people to be very careful with children in the swimming pools "watch over them at all times, because an accident can happen in a few minutes." On the same day a SAMU crew also treated an 82-year-old woman who had symptoms of drowning in a swimming pool in a Benidorm urbanisation.

Flood repairs finally financed

A year after the devastating DANA floods that hit the Costa Blanca and particularly the Vega Baja region, the European Bank has finally granted a loan of up to 100 million euros for repairs and infrastructure improvements. The news was announced by Valencian President Ximo Puig at a meeting of the regional parliament Les Cortes, last week. This is the second line of credit opened by the European Bank on behalf of the Valencian government, which was granted up to 270 million euros in

November. The new loan will release a further 50 million euros and should be available from next month. The funds will we specifically allocated to the Vega Baja area of the Costa Blanca, as well as the Vall d’Albaida region in the province of Valencia, both of which suffered severely at the hands of last September’s record-breaking storm and floods. The projects ear-marked for funding include repairs to the Vega Baja Hospital and to all health centres in the area that

were damaged by the storm. Roads, schools, farm irrigation and tourist infrastructures hit by the floods will also have essential work carried out thanks to the loan. In June, the European Parliament approved a grant of 56.7 million euros to the four areas of Spain that were most affected by the DANA. However, it is not currently clear what share of the pot will go the Valencian Community and to neighbouring Murcia, which also suffered due to the floods, especially around the Mar Menor.

September, but the government “That's when we'll have the guarantees and the context we need to approach the necessary structural reforms,” the socialist leader said. Spain is not alone in seeing its GDP plummet this year – by a whopping 18.5 percent so far – and it is logical this would be the case, given that the country, like most of the world, was in full lockdown from March to the end of May and all bar essential businesses forced to close their doors unless their staff could President Pedro Sánchez work from home. Now, though, it appears intends to stretch them out even unlikely a blanket national further in light of a rise in cases shutdown would happen again: nationwide. Further outbreaks of Covid-19 are Pedro Sánchez has strongly localised, testing and contact- hinted, though, that tax rises tracing is taking place much more would not apply across the board quickly, and cases are swiftly and would be unlikely to hit the contained, meaning any average worker or those on low lockdown would only be applied incomes. in specific towns on a temporary He says tax changes need to be basis. applied 'with justice' given that 'a As a result of the State of Alarm huge amount of people' believe being declared over at the end of they actually pay more in taxes June, employment went up in July than others who are much – with 161,217 workers now back wealthier. a longer term,” he argues. But not just now – although the country is facing 'enormous' deficits and public debts, the country's first priority is to 'maintain companies and workers' during the pandemic. Once the increased taxes are in place, they are expected to include an 18 percent levy on banks and petroleum giants – although not on petrol or other domestic fuel – plus a 5 percent increase on taxes on share dividends, a hike on income tax for the highest incomes, an increase of 1 percent on 'asset tax' for those with €10 million or more in funds or fixtures, a new anti-fraud law, levelling up the tax on diesel with that on petrol, and the creation of the so-called 'Tobin' and 'Google' taxes already approved in Parliament. A tax on single-use plastics – to discourage their use, or at least, to encourage their recycling and becoming a circular economy – and a review of taxes charged on food will come into force. These, once the pandemic is under control worldwide, should accelerate economic recovery more in 2021 and to an even greater extent in 2022, thanks to the 'historic' deal agreed with the European Union which will allow Spain emergency Covid funds of €750 billion, about half in loans and half in direct cash injections.

Rail tickets discounted for August In a bid to get passengers back on the trains again, rail board RENFE has launched a high-speed and long-distance ticket offer with discounts of up to 65 percent for August. With a reduction in foreign holidaymakers due to a series of Covid-19 outbreaks – even though most traditional beachresort areas have a lower incidence of the virus than many of their usual tourists' home countries – it could be Spanish residents themselves who 'save the summer' for the industry, and making train journeys affordable will help those already undecided about whether or not to take a 'staycation' this year. RENFE says it has put 200,000 seats on the express AVE trains and the cheaper 'snail-rail' Larga Distancia ('Long Distance') connections on sale with prices and conditions to reflect its 'Promo+' tariff – a scheme which allows flexibility in cancellations and changes of date, time and destination. Numerous offer types are now advertised on Renfe.com, the rail board website, including a twofor-one tourist-class-plus, allowing two people to travel together for half the price, and tariffs for families or friend groups of four to travel at the reduced

cost of €100 or €120 for them all, working out at €25 to €30 per head. They are valid for the AVE, ALVIA and Euromed trains, although offers differ according to which type – as an example, the Larga Distancia connections are frequently less than half the price of the AVE anyway, for the same journey, because they can take up to three times as long to get there and involve at least one change, making them an ideal option for those with time on their hands and who are not bothered about creature comforts such as wider seats or on-board WiFi, but whose priority is getting from A to B as

cheaply as they can. As well as online sales, the offer tickets can be bought at station box offices, via telephone or through the State-run post office chain Correos, although RENFE strongly encourages travellers to use 'distance' methods for purchases where they can in order to cut down on crowds, face-toface contact with strangers, and touching physical items and surfaces. For those who prefer to buy tickets in person, use of contactless credit or debit cards or mobile phone payments are recommended, rather than cash, to reduce the virus risk.

AA Real Members’ Stories Throughout 2020, each month, the Costa Blanca People features a real life story from real people about what it is like to suffer from Alcholism, what they did to overcome their addiction with alcoholic, and how they lead their lives today on their road of recovery. What is AA? Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for AA membership, it is self supporting through its members’ own contributions. AA is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organisation or institution, does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety. An AA Member’s Story... 2019 was an interesting year. I reached 75 years of age; I celebrated 50 years as a Catholic Priest; I continued to enjoy 25 years of sobriety. My life has three parts - a journey to priesthood; a journey to self destruction caused by alcohol abuse; a continuing journey of joy in sobriety. My home, as an only child, was a loving one. Though I suspect my parents loved me more than they loved each other. At school I was quiet, shy, even lacking in self confidence.

But I was very observant of others. I enjoyed all sport and this kept me out of trouble. I mentioned at School that I would like to be a priest. This came as a surprise to my parents and to my friends. But it set in motion the start of my journey. The next five years at a Boarding School were difficult for me. If your faced fitted you enjoyed school; if it didn’t fit, then life was very difficult. Holiday time and I was an underage drinker. There are no wild memories but the room did have a habit of spinning if I drank too much. Aged 18 years my study for the priesthood became a serious matter. I started my six years at a Senior Seminary. These were happy years. Friendships that were formed remain friendships today. The College treated us with respect – a welcome change! I enjoyed my college days. The long summer holidays gave the opportunity to get part time work, earn some money, and socialize with friends. This was my opportunity to enjoy a drink. But I never had any problem to stop drinking on my return to college. I was ordained just before my 25th birthday. I was confident that my priesthood would bring me an opportunity to help others and find my own happiness. So what went wrong? I went wrong. I can blame everyone and everything – and I did! I became a People Pleaser. I tried to do everything for everyone and insist that it was done my way. I was a priest and they expected me to know the answer to all their problems. I was playing God. My problem - I didn’t realize this.

I enjoyed a drink to relax. I needed to relax – so I needed a drink to relax. I needed a drink – full stop. This happens slowly. Even now I find it difficult that I had not noticed that things were going badly wrong. The word is denial. I didn’t want to believe that things were going wrong. I knew something was wrong. But it couldn’t be the drink – could it? No, not the drink - I was tired. If people would leave me alone, everything would sort itself out. I was a mess. I began to plan my day around a drink. Work hard, drink hard. Justify whatever went wrong; have a drink to celebrate or to commiserate. But life with a drink became difficult; life without a drink became impossible. Something had to give. A few weeks before my Silver Jubilee I entered a treatment centre. The idea was not mine! I was full of anger and resentment. But I was a wreck, my life in turmoil, and I was scared. The next five months changed my life. Better perhaps, the next five months gave me a life. One day at a time this new life continues. This thanks to the way of life suggested by the Twelve Step Program of Alcoholic Anonymous. I needed guidance, to look at myself. Be under no illusion, this is a very painful experience. Forget Big Boys don’t cry! This one did! I was distraught; disillusioned; despised myself and what I had become;

trapped and nowhere to go. My life filled with fear. But there was a gentle voice suggesting a way forward. ACCEPT that I am an alcoholic; that I am powerless over alcohol; that my life is unmanageable. That I suffered from the illness of alcoholism. Simple but simplicity does not equate with easy. Acceptance is no easy matter – your very life depends upon getting it right. But this acceptance brings the ability to make choices again in your life. The Twelve Step Program gives a daily choice of life. One day at a time you are not dependent on alcohol. One day at a time you can recover. The word Recovery is used to describe this reality. One day at a time you recover

your life. The last 25 years, now 26 years, continue to be the happiest of my life. I value, and continue to value, my priesthood – I no longer have an answer to everything! I strive to do what I can, and leave the outcome to the God of my understanding. Fear no longer dominates my life. My life in retirement is a full life. I live in Spain. I have fulfilled a childhood dream of travelling the world. I marvel each day at the wonder of sobriety. Gratitude is not merely a word but more a way of living. My life is no longer a fantasy world. I live in this world – ¨I am at peace with myself, with others and with God.” These promises of sobriety ever become a reality one day at a time.

Beware mobile speed radars in Torrevieja Drivers are being warned of new measures being taken by the Local Police to control vehicle speed in Torrevieja. Traffic signs are being installed at the main entrances to the city to clearly indicate that there is “speed controlled by radar throughout the municipality”. The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, together with the councillor for Security and Emergencies, Federico Alarcón, showcased the mobile radar (VELOLASER device), which the Local Police has acquired and which will come into operation this week throughout the municipality of Torrevieja. The Mayor has highlighted that the intention of the Torrevieja City Council with the implementation of this mobile

radar is to educate drivers, both of cars and motorcycles, so that they respect the speed limit, especially in the large avenues of the town, where there have been numerous complaints from neighbours about noise and speeding. Around 20 local police officers have been trained to use this mobile radar device, which began to be effective in the main avenues of the city from yesterday (Monday 10th August). This radar equipment, which has had a cost of almost 18,000 euros, is lightweight and designed to measure the speed of vehicles and document, through photographs, those that exceed the

predefined speed limit. All of its components are integrated in a single body, which makes it ease to use and transport. Officers can perform speed measurements at different locations in a very short time, thanks to the ease of transport and set up.

Covid contacttracing App ready in Spain A mobile phone contact-tracing application designed by Spain's government is about to become available to the public on a voluntary basis, having passed its first phase of tests. 'Radar COVID' is capable of tracing twice as many contacts as manual tracers – operated by human staff – reaching on average 6.4 close contacts per confirmed Coronavirus case, compared with the present 3.5. After testing, it was given a score of 8.2 out of 10, and is expected to be released shortly to regional governments and health authorities. Using Bluetooth, the App uses

anonymous identifiers emitted by mobile phones and, if two handsets have been close to each other for a period of at least 15 minutes at two metres' distance or less, both will automatically 'collect' the other's anonymous identifier. The information does not allow anyone to trace or identify each other through having the App on their phones, but if anyone tests positive for Covid-19, they can then give their consent to the data obtained being used by the health service. Any mobile phones which have been in close proximity to one used by a person testing positive will flag up an alert of 'possible contagion risk' and

include instructions on how to proceed. The pilot for the App was approved by the Council of Ministers on 23rd June, then a first phase of tests began on 29th June. Development has continued through various testing phases, and was completed on 31st July. In order to check how effective it is, App developers simulated four fictitious outbreaks of the SARS-CoV-2 virus on the Canarian island of La Gomera and got volunteers to download the test version. A total of 60,000 people all over Spain did so. According to the ministry of health, an 'initial functional version' may be ready to go live from mid-August.

August dramatised events in Orihuela The Councillor for Tourism and Festivities, Mariola Rocamora, has presented the new programming of dramatised events, which form part of the summer night tourist routes that are taking place in the historic centre of Orihuela every Friday and Saturday through the summer. The program is part of the "Orihuela awaits you" campaign and Councillor Rocamora explained that "in August the Tourism Department is adding dramatised tours, where historical figures will introduce visitors to Oriolan history with different themes. These will complement the already scheduled guided tours on Fridays”.

Mariola Rocamora

On the 15th and 29th of August, “Medieval Orihuela” will be created, where the most significant scenes of the city will be revived. It will depart from the Puerta de la Olma, where Mariano “El Trovador” will appear, a well-known and friendly character from the period in the

city, who will narrate anecdotes and curiosities throughout the tour ending at the door of the Orihuela Town Hall. On 22nd August, the visit “Orihuela: Legends and Mysteries” will be held, which will begin at 9:00 p.m. from the Pozos de Cremós and will visit the most emblematic points of the old town, until reaching the Puerta de la Olma (next to the Diocesan College Santo Domingo) where illustrious figures who marked the evolution of Orihuela's history will appear. The theatrical routes will be on Saturday nights in Orihuela city and will begin at 9:00 p.m. Admission is free and to attend it is essential to make a reserve in advance as the groups are limited to thirty people. Those interested in attending any of these events can register on the Tourist Info telephone numbers: 96 530 46 45 - 96 530 27 47, or on WhatsApp: 673 836 385 or get more information visit: www.orihuelaturistica.es. Continuing with the marketing campaign "Orihuela awaits you", on Friday nights including 14th, 21st and 28th of August the "Festival of Sensations" will be held in Orihuela Costa. This is a theatrical staging that will take place on the Playa Flamenca promenade. It will highlight the Cabo Roig Watchtower, the only BIC in the coastal area and this representation will explain how pirates sailed the coast, what the tower was for and how the characters of

the time lived. "There will be a capacity of 200 people, with free entry, chairs will be socially distanced and entry and exit access will be controlled to comply with the protocol for Covid-19 sanitary measures,” the Councillor explained. Mariola Rocamora was keen to inform costal residents that "the possibility of free bus is offered for trips from the coast to attend the dramatised routes and from Orihuela city to attend the Festival of

Sensations". The Councillor also indicated that another program is being finalised for the enjoyment of residents and visitors over the summer period. Thematic Routes Success The Councillor for Tourism and Festivities has taken the opportunity to thank people for the popularity of the thematic routes which were held across the month of July and in which, to date, more than 200 people have participated in ten groups. "More and more requests have been

received to participate in these thematic routes and this has meant that we have had to run three walks in the same night with a 15 minute break between each," said Councillor Rocamora. Those taking part in the routes have travelled from many different parts of the country, as well as from the municipalities of Vega Baja. Visitors from northern Spain such as Asturias and inland from areas areas such as Albacete, Guadalajara or Burgos were all registered.

Covid ‘deactivating’ mask on sale in Eroski A mask which deactivates the SARS-CoV-2 virus and developed in Portugal is now on sale across Spain in Eroski supermarkets. The MOxAdTech is the first mask of its kind and is made of textile fabric which stops the virus in its tracks when it comes into contact with it. The mask has passed all the tests carried out on it at the João Lobo Antunes Molecular Medicine Institute (iMM) in Lisbon. The mask was created at the Institute, alongside with the

company Sonae Fashion, the CITEVE Technology Centre, the fashion retailer MO, the textile manufacturer Adalberto, and Minho University. Supermarket chain Eroski says it is now on the shelves for the bargain price of €9.95. “It is highly-efficient, comfortable, waterproof, and has an innovative builtin top layer which neutralises the SARS-CoV-2 virus when it enters in

contact with the material,” Eroski says. “The mask is made up of a material comprising several layers and a waterrepelling treatment, which neutralises the virus and other bacteria. “It maintains its efficiency after 50 washes and carries the OEKO-Tex kitemark which demonstrates an absence of toxic chemicals used during manufacturing, and making it harmless in human and organic terms.”

Saturday 15th August – Channel 4, 10.00 pm

Sunday 16th August – ITV, 6.50 pm

Seventeen year-old Kim is the pride and joy of her father Bryan Mills. Bryan is a retired agent who left the Central Intelligence Agency to be near Kim in California. Kim lives with her mother Lenore and her wealthy stepfather Stuart. Kim manages to convince her reluctant father to allow her to travel to Paris with her friend Amanda. When the girls arrive in Paris they share a cab with a stranger named Peter, and Amanda lets it slip that they are alone in Paris. Using this information an Albanian gang of human traffickers kidnaps the girls. Kim barely has time to call her father and give him information. Her father gets to speak briefly to one of the kidnappers and he promises to kill the kidnappers if they do not let his daughter go free. The kidnapper wishes him "good luck," so Bryan Mills travels to Paris to search for his daughter and her friend.

Twenty-two years after the original Jurassic Park failed, the new park, also known as Jurassic World, is open for business. After years of studying genetics, the scientists on the park genetically engineer a new breed of dinosaur, the Indominus Rex. When everything goes horribly wrong, will our heroes make it off the island?

Former King Carlos flees Spain Coronavirus cases continue to rise When former King Juan Carlos announced that he was packing his bags and heading into a form of exile, he would have been aware of the irony. The 82 year old was born in exile and reportedly in relative poverty (by royal standards) after his grandfather Alfonso XIII fled the country in the face of popular revolt in 1931. It took General Francisco Franco, who came to power with the help of Hitler and Mussolini after turning a failed coup into the Spanish civil war in 1936, to restore the monarchy. But this only came after a vengeful Franco had himself ruled with absolute power, while violently suppressing democrats and making liberal use of death sentences, for almost four decades. To secure the restoration, Juan Carlos had first to side with Franco, agree that the proper heir to the crown (his own father, Don Juan) should be leapfrogged, and then wait patiently for the dictator to die. When that finally happened in 1975, Juan Carlos received a dictator’s powers – and refused to criticise his predecessor as head of state. Remarkably, he gave up that power and steered Spain towards democracy. That has guaranteed him his place in the history books forever – since the new constitution passed in 1978 still holds, and Spain has prospered as never before. His move into exile comes amid investigations into suspected graft and fraud, over a $100m payment to him by the king of Saudi Arabia – but it also highlights weaknesses that were baked into the original transition into democracy. Given the monarchy’s

fragility, and Spain’s fears of another military coup (proven well-founded, when the civil guard lieutenant colonel Antonio Tejero stormed parliament in 1981), huge amounts of energy went into protecting the king from scandal, investigation or unpopularity. Unfortunately, that energy did not always come from him. He basked in genuine popularity, while living a luxurious life with numerous lovers and constant question marks over how – given an apparent lack of Former King Juan Carlos assets, with royal during a secret (and expensive) 2012 lands, palaces and art collections actually elephant hunt in Botswana, while the owned by the state – he paid for his rest of Spain hunkered down to survive family’s lifestyle. Those questions, the financial crisis. That helped bring however, were not aired in the press, about his abdication, in 2014. Juan Carlos’s financial activities, many would disapprove. affairs are already being studied in The first major error in judgement saw Switzerland and in Spain. Exile won’t him evacuated home after an accident make any of that go away.

As always with figures based articles, this will be out of date by the time we go to press, but there is little doubt the trend will still be increasing. Mid-last week The Spanish Health Ministry reported that 1,178 Covid-19 cases had been detected in the previous 24 hours. The majority of the infections were recorded in the regions of Aragón and Madrid, with 365 and 292 cases respectively – more than half of the total. Spain’s regions detected 14,292 new infections, although there was missing data from Madrid, Catalonia and Navarre – some of the areas hardest hit by the pandemic in Spain – which blamed technical problems for their failure to report their figures. There is also a discrepancy between the number of new cases and the total. The Health Ministry reported a total of 302,814 infections, compared to 297,054 at the start of the week – a difference of 5,760. The daily report indicates that this is due to problems with the data

provided by the regions and “the transition to the new monitoring strategy,” under which new cases are only reported if they have been diagnosed in the past 24 hours. In reality, Spain is detecting a much higher number of new Covid-19 cases than what is reported under the heading “Diagnosed in the last 24 hours” in the daily report. Last week, more than 2,500 infections were being detected a day. This figure includes all new cases, regardless of whether they were diagnosed the day before or several days ago. The 14-day cumulative incidence of the virus, the indicator used by international agencies to make comparisons between countries, has continued to rise in Spain since the end of the state of alarm on 21st June. Indeed, the incidence rate has jumped nine-fold since mid-June, rising to 71 confirmed cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Accidental food wonders It’s often said necessity is the mother of invention, but when you look at how some of our favourite foods came into being it appears that curiosity, clumsiness and error is the most guaranteed formula. From 2000 BC to the present day, here are some of the products and dishes that nearly didn’t happen. Chocolate Brownies There are a few claims on the invention of the crispy-on-theoutside, gooey-on-the-inside creation that is the chocolate brownie. But the story favoured by many and cited in Betty Crocker's Baking Classics, is that home economist Mildred Brown Schrumpf in Bangor, Maine was baking a chocolate cake and it deflated. Champagne Champagne wasn’t always the epitome of good taste, it was once considered the result of shoddy wine-making. In fact, 17th century wine makers spent a lot of time trying to get the bubbles out of the fizzy drink. Kellogg’s Corn Flakes Corn Flakes came about when Kellogg’s founders John and Will Kellogg were attempting to make granola. The duo accidentally flaked wheat berry, then experimented with corn and realised they were onto something. The recipe was

perfected and Corn Flakes were eventually rolled out across the world. Blue Cheese Legend has it blue cheese was invented by accident when a drunken cheese maker left behind a half-eaten loaf of bread in a cheese cave. On returning, he discovered the mouldy bread had transferred to the cheese turning it blue. These days, it’s made under more controlled circumstances with specific bacteria. The Sandwich The sandwich is named after John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, an 18th century English nobleman. It’s said he couldn't leave a gambling game he was playing, so requested his servant bring him meat between two pieces of bread. The meal caught on and people started saying "I’ll have the same as Sandwich" Ice-cream cones It was a moment of thinkingon-your-feet that led to the invention of the ice cream cone, which some might go as far as

saying ice cream is incomplete without. It was at the St. Louis World’s Fair, in Missouri, in 1904, when Syrian concessionaire Ernest Hamwi decided to roll up some zalabia, which are crisp, waffle-like pastries, to help out a neighbouring ice cream vendor who ran out of bowls. Beer Though beer is referenced as early as the 6th century BC in Mesopotamia (now broadly Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey), no one’s exactly sure who invented it or how. Historians believe it’s possible it was created by accident during breadmaking: someone baking bread outdoors was interrupted by a rainstorm, ran for cover and returned to the dough a day or two later to discover fermented liquid. Worcestershire Sauce Lea & Perrins Worcestershire sauce is a staple in most store cupboards but it was actually invented by accident. Chemists John Wheeley Lea and William Perrins were tasked with recreating a recipe nobleman Lordy Sandys experienced in Bengal, India. At first the product wasn’t to its makers’ tastes, but after storing it in the cellar the sauce's flavours mellowed.

Using a mix of red and green cabbage makes it extra pretty, but it tastes delicious with just one variety too. Charred peppers – I used a mix of Anaheim and banana peppers, but red bell pepper and poblano would also be nice. They add heat, extra color, and yummy charred flavor.

Green onions, cilantro, mint & basil – If you ask me, no summer salad is complete without herbs. This mix fills the slaw with fresh, surprising flavor, but if you don’t have all these herbs, that’s ok! Feel free to use what you have on hand. Along with the green onions, just one or two herbs would add plenty of flavor. Peaches – They add a juicy, sweet contrast to the other savory, crisp elements. Seeds or nuts – For crunch and toasty flavor!

Rainbow Orzo Salad Whole wheat orzo is the base of this salad. If you can’t find whole wheat orzo, regular orzo will work in its place. Garbanzo beans add protein and hearty texture. Mango adds a sweet, juicy contrast to the crisp veggies. Diced cucumber and red bell pepper add fresh, crunchy texture. Red onion and garlic fill out the flavor and add extra crunch. Fresh herbs and arugula add fresh flavor and lots and lots of green. Pine nuts finish it with a toasty crunch. Tahini makes the creamy, dairy-free base of the dressing, while lemon juice & sherry vinegar brighten it up. I also add cumin and sweet paprika for a little spice.

Mountain climbers are a hero exercise for a number of reasons: perform the move as quickly as possible to give your workouts a boost of low-impact cardio. Slow it down and you challenge your core stabilisation and hip flexion, which is important for proper running form. Loop resistance bands around your feet and you now have a seriously challenging exercise that builds core and hip flexor strength. Still, many people perform this exercise incorrectly, so knowing how to do a mountain climber properly is important before banging out some quick reps during your next workout. Start in a high plank position with shoulders stacked directly over wrists, hands place shoulder-width apart, and core engaged so that your body forms a straight line from shoulders to hips to heels. Keep your neck relaxed by looking down between your hands. Engage your glutes, quads, and thighs to keep your

legs straight. With a tight core, initiate the movement by driving your left knee in toward your chest, then quickly stepping it back to plank position. Immediately drive the right knee in toward chest, then quickly step it back into plank position. Continue to alternate. Perform the move slowly at first, then speed up as you perfect your form. Expert tips: Make sure your quads are engaged, your knees are off the ground, and your toes are placed right under heels. Always start from a neutral position and make sure your butt is not up in the air, and also that your tailbone is not tucked. Each time you pull your knee toward your chest, make sure the movement is controlled—maintaining a neutral spine. Once you have that control and your movements are not bouncy or ballistic, you can speed up the movement. Always make sure your knee comes in strong.

The secret to healthy gums When it comes to looking after our dental health, a straight, pearly-white smile and minty fresh breath tend to be our primary concerns, but maintaining healthy gums is just as important. Gum disease is extremely common –most adults experience the condition to some extent at least once in their lifetime – and since it’s usually painless, you might not realise anything’s wrong. Not only is gum disease contagious, but left unchecked, it can cause your teeth to fall out, and increase your risk of other health conditions, such as heart disease and lung infections, so maintaining healthy gums is vital for your health. Healthy gums should be pink, firm and hold your teeth in place securely. If your gums bleed when you touch or brush

SALE

them, it could be a sign of gum disease, which is actually ‘a generic name given to an infection of the soft tissues and bone that hold your teeth in place. The two most common forms of gum disease are gingivitis, and its more advanced stage, periodontitis. Characterised by bleeding gums and bad breath, gingivitis develops when plaque slowly builds up on your teeth and gums. Over time, toxins released by the bacteria in the plaque damages your teeth and gums, making them irritated, puffy and sore. Luckily, if spotted and treated early by a dental professional, gingivitis is a completely reversible condition. However, when gum disease persists for a longer time and is left untreated, it may develop into periodontitis. Periodontitis is an infection that damages both the soft gum tissue and the bones supporting your teeth. It’s an irreversible condition which at more advanced stages can cause teeth to become loose and eventually fall out. To prevent this from occurring, make the following tips part of your oral hygiene routine: 1. Visit your dentist regularly 2. Brush teeth twice a day 3. Use a fluoride toothpaste 4. Clean between your teeth 5. Use a good quality mouth wash 6. Eat a healthy, balanced diet 7. Don’t smoke!

She's Unreasonable My wife said she is divorcing me after 6 years of marriage. We’ve no children. She kept on at me for what felt like an eternity because she said I refused to do anything around the house, or helped with it's upkeep and running, paying the bills etc. I hate house work, and I told her so. In the end, she told me that not only did I not do anything to help around the house, but added to her problems by never putting anything away and constantly leaving things in a mess. Throughout our marriage she repeatedly said that she did not want kids with me, because I was too much of a kid myself. It just felt like nagging to me, so most nights I went down to the pub. She finally said she’d had enough and filed for divorce. I can’t understand why she would divorce me for such lame, pathetic reasons. Perhaps her reasons are not so lame, or pathetic. I would suggest that it wasn’t the fact per se that you don't like housework, but more the point here is that you had no respect for her when you decided you weren’t going to lift a finger to help in your marriage. Housework is no one person’s job, particularly in these modern times when couples both work. Refusal or failure to help with the load and leaving the work to just one person, speaks volumes I am afraid. Why should one person do it all? I am afraid I agree with your wife; you had a distinct lack of respect for your partner and from your wife’s point of view she would have concluded that you didn’t love her enough to want to help the cause. She put up with this for 6 years, and gave you the opportunity to change. When you didn’t she decided she’d had enough. I am afraid you’ve only yourself to blame, because that is no marriage. 1,159 People in Prison for Crimes against Road Safety Spain´s Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, presented the first comprehensive report on road safety crimes and their incidence in the prison environment, a document that reflects that there are 4,542 people in prisons dependent on the General State Administration deprived of liberty with some type of crime related to road safety, which represents 9% of the prison population. Of these, 1,159 had road safety as the main crime (2.3% of those in prison). “The study reveals that crimes related to driving motor vehicles lead to an increasing number of drivers in prison. We have to stop this trend, because we must not forget that, behind these cold figures, there are people with names and surnames who, at a given moment, failed to comply with the rules and suffer the consequences for themselves and their families, ” Grande-Marlaska said. The report indicates that 97.3% of people in prison are men, compared to 2.7% women. Thus, the radiography of this criminal type determines that it is a male with an average age of 40 years (39.8), with a sentence of less than three years for driving without or without a valid licence (54.4%), recklessly driving (16.7%) and under the influence of alcohol or drugs (16.7%). In addition, 9 out of 10 people have sentences of less than three years and the average sentence is 667 days (1.8 years). As for the geographical scope, the provinces of residence of the most frequent convicts are Madrid, Malaga, Seville, A Coruña and Pontevedra. Reckless homicide The report shows that of these convicts, 26 people are in prison for

being accused or convicted of reckless homicide with a motor vehicle. This crime represents 0.7% of all homicide crimes, 20% of reckless homicides and 2.4% of all inmates against road safety. That is, one in five reckless homicides occurs with a motor vehicle. The profile of the imprudent murderer in prison, according to the study, is a man aged between 26 and 60 years, with an average sentence of 4 years. The analysis of the geographical scope indicates that crimes occur both in large urban areas and in rural, coastal or inland areas of the peninsula. Of the 26 convicted of reckless homicide with a motor vehicle, 2 of the offenders accumulate 6 and 7 convictions related to road safety. Only 2 of the 26 people are women. The Interior Minister has indicated that "those who commit offenses that lead to prison do so because they make a double mistake." "On the one hand, they do not perceive the risk of the recklessness they commit despite the fact that, as we have seen, the consequences are extremely serious and very costly. On the other hand, they show a mistaken sense of impunity when, according to statistics, the degree of repression of these harmful behaviours is very high,"he indicated. Treatment in correctional facilities The Secretary General of Penitentiary Institutions, Ángel Luis Ortiz, explained that since 2010 an intervention program has been implemented that is entitled 'Universalisation of road education in penitentiary centres'. The objective of the same is to sensitise the inmates of the importance of civic behaviour and respect for the rules when it comes to

getting behind the wheel. It also facilitates the preparation for obtaining a driving licence, professional permit, or the recovery of points. Throughout these ten years, 1,675 inmates have been able to remove the theoretical driving licence from the 2,501 that have been presented. In relation to those eligible for the practical exam, the data refer to the period 2010-2016 since in later years the program was not developed. During those six years, a total of 494 have obtained a driving licence, 463 were men and 31 women. The report concludes that the number of interns who pass the practical driving test exceeds the number of those passing the theoretical exam. Alternative penalties and measures to prison The report also analyses the incidence of these crimes on alternative penalties and measures, which do not imply custodial sentences but compel people, either to conduct workshops or behavioural re-education programs, or tasks of public utility in order to repair the damage caused is the well-known community benefit work. In 2019 the number of commandments received by the Penalty Management and Alternative Measures services amounted to 80,935, of which 30% responded to crimes against road safety (24,487). Regarding the tasks of public utility, 10,683 people carried out works for the benefit of the community. In summary, in 2019 the General Secretariat of Penitentiary Institutions managed the situation of more than 30,000 people convicted of crimes against road safety.

Walk Safely What is a pedestrian? According to the dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy (RAE), a pedestrian is "a person on foot on a public road." However, the DGT expands that definition and also considers pedestrians "those who push any other small nonmotor vehicle or people with reduced mobility who circulate with a wheelchair (with or without a motor)." General traffic regulations There are general traffic regulations that all pedestrians must comply with: Pedestrians must move in places reserved for them and not in prohibited places (for example, highways and expressways). In the city, if possible, they should use the centre of the pavements, moving away both from the curb - so as not to be hit by a vehicle - and from the buildings due to the fact that there are garage entrances or exits. If a street does not have a pavement or there is an obstacle, pedestrians should move as close to the wall as possible and, if possible, facing traffic. Special attention should be paid to children, who should always go hand in hand with adults and play in safe spaces and away from the road. Also, pedestrians cannot carry loose animals. Otherwise, they could create dangerous situations for the other users of public roads. And pedestrians are only allowed to invade the road to cross it. How should you cross a street? Since we have referred to the invasion of the road, it is an action that carries a risk. For this reason, it is important to always choose the safest place to cross it, preferably a passage regulated by road markings, traffic lights or traffic agents. And if it does not exist, a place with good visibility must be selected. In any case, before crossing a street we will stop next to the curb, look left and right to make sure that there is no danger

and finally cross the road in a straight line, as fast as possible but without running. At traffic light-controlled crossings, wait until the pedestrian's silhouette is green before crossing the road, still making sure it is safe to cross before moving, and you should speed up if it starts blinking. Even if we have priority, it is advisable not to cross until checking that the vehicles have stopped. Likewise, we will have priority at crossings. But this does not mean that a driver will stop when we start to cross. It is advisable to signal drivers by hand to warn them of our intention and to cross only when the vehicles have stopped. The crossing that provides the most confidence and security is that regulated by a traffic agent. In this case, their indications prevail over others. For example: if the silhouette of the pedestrian at a traffic light is red but the agent indicates that we can cross the road, we will follow the officer´s instructions. Out of town All these tips are useful to us in the city. But how should we act if we decide to stretch our legs and take a good walk on the road out of town? It is a healthy habit. But if we want to move out of town, the following recommendations must be considered: Only walk on roads where there is no express prohibition. In general, in this type of road you must walk on the left to see the approaching vehicles from the front. If it exists, walk on the hard shoulder. Otherwise, the part of the road closest to the edge will be used. In any case, if there are several people who move, you should go one after the other (in single file). As in the city, the roads must be crossed at safe places and extreme precautions must be taken. Visible sections should be chosen, and curves and gradients should

be avoided. Since we have been talking about visibility, wearing clothing like reflective vests will help us be more visible to drivers. And both in the city and on the road, it is essential to forget the mobile phone and avoid listening to music or the radio with headphones, since its use, by distracting us, isolates us from traffic and makes us even more vulnerable pedestrians. Drivers: tips to avoid collisions But whether we are run over does not depend only on us. Logically, drivers have a lot to do. Speeding, talking on the mobile phone, thinking about other things ... There are several reasons that can cause it. When we stop being pedestrians and become drivers, it is essential that we consider these tips: First of all, we must respect speed limits. We must monitor speed and take extreme precautions when approaching pedestrian crossings, bus stops, schools, playgrounds, shopping streets, etc. We have already discussed it: operating the mobile phone or the browser isdangerous. And, furthermore, it is prohibited. Occasionally, pedestrians pass between parked vehicles to cross the street. When driving alongside the latter, you must be especially vigilant, because they could step into the road. And the same happens if we are parked. When reversing we will look in the rear-view mirrors to make sure that there is no pedestrian passing behind our vehicle. Be respectful and do not park on a pavement. By occupying it, we will force pedestrians to use the road. And on the road, we will moderate the speed if there is a vehicle on the hard shoulder. At any time, one of its occupants could appear on the road, with the consequent risk of being run over.

Elche CF Surprise Surprise! Lo Crispin Golf Society Elche CF finish this season in the play offs, just 4 matches away from being promoted to La Liga!

socks off! They made some excellent moves and did not look like a relegation side. On the 84th minute, Claudio Beauvue shot and scored, to make the result a draw. Still not what Elche needed, but getting there. Then out of the blue in the 94th min, the ref awarded a penalty to Deportivo and Beauvue hammered it home!

However getting here, was far from straight forward. Despite 13 weeks without football matches, Spain managed to finish all the major leagues. The last games of the Segunda La Liga Smart Bank were all set to be played at the same time on July 20th. If Elche CF, in 7th place won, and if Fuenlabrada, in 6th place lost, then they would change table positions and Elche would enter the play offs. What happened next was total and utter chaos! The drama started just one hour before kick off. Fuenlabrada had a tough away match to Deportivo la Coruna, who needed a win to have a chance of avoiding relegation. After travelling to Galicia it was discovered that 6 of the Fuenlabrada team had already tested positive for Covid 19. Intriguingly it was suggested that they could have contracted the virus when they went out celebrating the win from their last match, which was against Elche CF and which saw them push Elche down the table. Consequently the Fuenlabrada match was postponed, whilst all the other fixtures went ahead. Elche CF finished strong at home winning 2-1 to mid table Real Oviedo, but the implication of this win was not known. Immediately the arguments started. Many teams thought that Fuenlabrada

Final score 2-1 home win for Deportivo and a loss for Fuenlabrada putting Elche CF in the playoffs!! should be automatically awarded a loss, as they were unable to field a team. Their lawyer, son of La Liga Smart Bank President, cited force majeure, which meant that the game had to be played. No one could agree and the discussions continued until the fixture was finally announced for Friday the 7th August. The Fuenlabrada players had all fully recovered during their quarantine in Coruna, so were ready for their opposition and knew that they needed a win or a draw to stay in the play offs. Deportivo were very much the under dogs. Reportedly they had not trained as any result, even a win, would still see them relegated to the Segunda B. They had nothing to play for whatsoever. Every Elche fan felt that the dream was over for this season, as Fuenlabrada would achieve a win or draw. It started as anticipated, with Fuenlabrada taking the lead on 11 minutes, a scoreline which they maintained for most of the match. The second half saw Deportivo play their

Drama Drama Drama. Elche will now play 3rd placed Real Zaragoza at home on Thursday 13th and then away on Sunday the 16th. However Real Zaragoza are appealing the match and saying that they should automatically be promoted, due to the delay. This is really because their star player, on loan No 10 Luis Suarez and the highest goal scorer within the Segunda division this season, has already been recalled back to Watford. If Elche CF manage to win the two legs, then they will play either Girona or Almeria depending onwhich team wins the other Semi Final. We remain hopeful and super excited! We also remain hopeful that spectators will return to support their teams in the future. Once we areallowed in to the Martinez Valero, EuroTourGuide will resume the coach tours to support the franjiverdes. The question is ‌ will they be in La Liga or the Segunda?

The Society played its first game since before the Coronavirus lockdown, on 5th August. A total of 23 members, including one who was playing his second game for handicap, took part. We competed for our 'Major' of the year, the Spring Cup, as the unprecedented situation meant that we were playing for it later in the year than we normally would have done. It was a typically hot August day and the course was generally in good condition, although some of the tee boxes were a bit 'scruffy'. The greens were 'true', but not as fast as would be expected at this time of the year. The Covid secure protocols, which appear to have been adopted by all courses in the region, such as no rakes in the bunkers and flagsticks, which often didn't embrace the ball completely, even when struck perfectly. This gave a slightly surreal feel to everything, but it was good to back playing golf! After the game we returned to the Lo

Crispin Tavern, where the day's prizes were distributed and where we were served Tapas in the Beer Garden, by the friendly staff. 1st. Place (and winner of the Spring Cup) - Steve Harrington 30 pts. off 25 2nd. Place - Ian Stuart 27pts. off 11 3rd. Place - Rod Pullen 25 pts. off 7 4th. Place - Pete Childs 24 pts. off 14 (on count back) In view of the coronavirus situation there were no Nearest the Pin prizes. Keith Rennison was the only member to post a 2 and so claimed the day's 2s pot. The Free Game Draw was won by Charlie Robertson. Our next game will be an individual Stableford competition at Roda on 19th August. Steve Harrington. (Handicap and Membership Secretary)

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Here we are, one week on from that FA Cup Final and Frank Lampard’s Chelsea are very much in the news. Lampard started the week suggesting that Chelsea deserved a later start to next season than everyone else, given the amount of energy they expended in losing to Arsenal. That message must have still been ringing in the ears of the players has they headed out to Munich to chase the lost cause against Bayern on Friday night, coming away with a 4-1 defeat whose manner suggested that Chelsea had already started resting up for the 2020/21 season. It’s been a busy week for Chelsea, especially in the behind the door marked ‘transfer rumours’. It seems that the club have finally cottoned on to the fact that their Russian rubles might be better spent on players who like defending rather than more attacking options to curtail the minutes that Tammy Abraham will get next season. To that end, the Blues are being linked to any goalkeeper with a half-decent reputation in the world and regardless of any likelihood of nabbing them. After all, it’s hard to imagine Jan Oblak looking at Stamford Bridge and fancying life there more than in Madrid. As for Barcelona’s Ter Stegen, he’s probably just about stopped laughing at his agent who probably felt obligated to mention it to him. Lamps has also noted that he needs a new left-back and is slowly coming to the realisation that Ben Chilwell is not going to come cheap - therefore he now has the hots for Ajax’s Nico Tagliafico instead, presumably working on the

logical assumption that he is better and cheaper. Frank would also love to sign West Ham’s Declan Rice who could do a job in defensive midfield (as Frank doesn’t seem too keen on the world’s best ball pincher playing in that position) or at centre back. Funnily enough, the Hammers would like a fair wedge for their one saleable asset and Lampard’s initial plan of funding the move by selling Jorginho to Juventus has been scuppered by Jorginho’s number one fan getting sacked despite lifting the old Serie A trophy. Even so, none of this has put Frank in such a bad mood that he would wish Willian anything other than best wishes if he takes Arsenal up on their offer of a very-well-paid-two-year-deal which is, understandably, far more attractive to the ageing Brazilian than Chelsea’s miserly one-year proposal. You have to love the way the transfer window fills that awkward silence between there being actual football to talk about. You get all kinds of weird and wonderful stuff to pass comment on, none more weird (even though it is slightly lacking in the wonderful stakes) than the chat linking Watford’s relegated skipper Troy Deeney to the omni-vacant back-up number nine role at Tottenham Hotspur. Yes, you read that right. Someone somewhere has fallen foul of a random rumour generator for sure and started to believe that Jose Mourinho would be keen on taking a striker with no working knees to the club. Yet, randomly, the more you read it the more you can start to talk yourself into it being a genuine shout - as we know, Spurs do need a back-up striker who can play for that month that Harry

is bound to be injured for. And Troy can take penalties and wind up Arsenal fans. And, if nothing else, Jose signing him would be the perfect ‘look, this is what they gave me when I asked for a worldclass striker’ excuse to have in the back pocket if needed. This time of year is also as good a reason as any to fire up the Jadon Sancho to United machine, start the Wilf Zaha wants to leave Palace engines and throw a match on the ‘Jack Grealish to leave Villa this summer’ BBQ. Actually, it looks like Sancho probably will be at Old Trafford next season and it will set Ole back in and around £100m. Daniel James, anyone? Arsenal will probably hope to be busy between now and the 15th October. We’ve already mentioned Willian and we all know that Yo-Pierre is waiting for the first deal to drop before putting ink to a new deal - but there’s chatter around Philippe Coutinho heading to the Emirates along with Thomas Partey if Atleti can ever get around to accepting Arsenal’s 19th bid. Plus, Mikel Arteta likes the idea of Diego Carlos - also a target of his old mate Peppy G - covering for David Luiz when he makes his first mistake of the season after a mere three minutes. I scribbled down ‘John Terry to Bournemouth’ twice in my midweek notes but, sadly, I don’t get to pass any comment on that as the Cherries went and appointed Eddie Howe’s number two Jason Tindall instead - and with that, I suspect it will be the last time Bournemouth get mentioned in this column ever again. Mauricio Pochettino has put word out that he is ‘happy to go anywhere’ to get back in the game. That ‘anywhere’ was believed to include Newcastle had the fictitious takeover actually existed. The Poch possibly momentarily thought Juve

might be on the cards until Antonio Pirlo got one of the quickest promotions in history. Danny Rose, probably put off by the lack of huge contract offer from Newcastle since last week’s news, has said he is ‘happy’ to stay at Tottenham - we are yet to be convinced that Jose agrees. Randomly, in more relegated footballer news, Norwich City seem to have a couple of defenders that people at much better clubs are interested in - which is curious given how terrible Norwich were at defending last season. Jamal Lewis looked like he was on his way to Liverpool until Norwich decided they wanted more money - and, even more curiously, Ben Godfrey could be off to AC Milan to restart the proud tradition of bizarre English transfers to the club. Those of a certain age will remember Mark Hateley and Luther Blissett donning the red and black. Leicester City, initially looking for a leftfooted right-winger in the mould of Barcelona’s new signing Trincao, have given up the search and decided to make a move for Barcelona’s new signing Trincao instead. Now, Barcelona have been involved in some very odd transfer dealings in recent times so don’t write this one off just yet. David Silva will be leaving Man City as soon as they are knocked out the Champions League, yet it seems he can only ever see himself in light blue - as a result, he might be off to the everimproving Lazio. Finally, after they failed to get promotion to the promised land, the players of Brentford are even more popular than the beaches of England this last weekend. If you are not seen to be trying to sign one, are you even taking the transfer window seriously?
