Spain announces new national measures See Main Advert on page 31

Spanish Health Minister Salvador Illa announced on Friday that the government is closing nightclubs and late bars across Spain in a bid to slow the spread of the coronavirus. He also said that all establishments would have to close at 1am, with no new customers

allowed to enter from midnight onward. The measures follow a growing number of outbreaks in recent weeks, which have led ministers to decided to ‘adopt coordinated actions in terms of public health and adopted unanimous measures’. Illa made the announcement after an emergency meeting with health officials from Spain’s regions, which have been in charge of their own coronavirus measures since the state of alarm came to an end. Friday’s announcement came after the figures released on Thursday showed a worsening situation, with Spain’s regions reporting a total of 2,953 new coronavirus infections detected in the previous 24 hours. This added a total of 7,550 confirmed cases, the highest since April. Another measure announced was a blanket ban across Spain on smoking in public if a two-meter distance from any other person cannot be observed.

New residents entering care homes will be tested to detect coronavirus infections, as will staff returning from holidays. Visits to homes will be limited to one person per resident. Fines will be levied on youngsters who are found to be drinking on the street, a practice known in Spain as a botellón. “Drinking in the street is prohibited, you are not allowed to drink in the street,” he said. Illa also recommended that people minimise social contact as much as possible, and limit meetings to 10 people, avoiding those from outside the household. The start of the school year in September is in the hands of each region. The ministry has produced a guide with steps that should be taken and that the government had provided €2 billion of extra ‘back to school’ funding to the regions.

Orihuela Costa Emergency Centre under way The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, the Councillor for Emergencies, Víctor Valverde, and the Councillor for Health, José Galiano, visited the construction of the Orihuela Costa Emergency Centre recently. This phase of the work began at the beginning of June and is being completed by the company Doalco for an amount of 2,064,000 euros (VAT included). Last March, the Governing Board approved the award of these construction works which are estimated to take a period of 6 months, which is expected to end in early 2021. Councillor Valverde said: "Now we are working on the specifications to provide the necessary furniture for this space. It will need about 70,000 euros to be fully equipped and after this tender the emergency services will be able to start their work as soon as possible." These are actions that have taken longer than expected to be carried out, since in principle the Generalitat Valenciana was going to take on these stages, but they were finally transferred to the Orihuela City Council. However, the changes prevented works from moving

Work in progress

forward more quickly. "We trust that the Generalitat Valenciana will support us with emergency services to deliver this Emergency Centre properly and in the best possible way in order to provide the best service to our residents," explained Mayor Bascuñana. Another of the lines of action that is currently being worked on is the location of different services and devices at a local and regional level so that they all have their headquarters in this facility in order to offer a complete service in the coastal area.

The Mayor explained that getting to ths stage in the development of the centre has required a huge amount of work, saying thank you for "the work carried out by the Councillor for Emergencies, Víctor Valverde, all the municipal technicians who are working on these dates, as well as to the Doalco company", at the same time that he wished that "all the works could be completed on the date indicated to make this Emergency Centre available to the public as soon as possible”.

Spanish officials bemused by new total lockdown claims Fernando Simón has denied that Spain is is no problem in this regard,” the expert preparing for a new general confinement said, settling the speculation once and for after information printed in a Costa del all. Sol-based expat newspaper spread to Website Matilda.es which battles international media. Spain’s Director of against fake news adds: We have the Co-ordination Centre for Health Alerts contacted the Ministry of Health and they and Emergencies called the articles ‘a tell us that "they do not know anything hoax’. The paper had claimed that Spain was due to go into a new lockdown on 18th September and that the government was working on a three-phase plan. At a Madrid press conference Fernando Simon, said: “About those rumours ... the other day they told me about it and I was very surprised. I have absolutely no information and in no forum or meeting in which I have participated has the Fernando Simón subject even been mentioned. I think they are hoaxes that about what is published" and that they run, I do not know with what intention, "do not enter into the future". In addition, but it has not been said at any time.” they recall that currently, the “If at any time we have to discuss the competences are held by the evolution of the epidemic, obviously it autonomous communities and they are will be raised and the decisions that have in charge of decision-making and so a to be made will be made. Right now there national lockdown is not legally possible.

"The Ministry of Health meets frequently to know the situation but the competences are transferred," they point out from Health, "the Ministry reports as concrete steps are being taken." Simón that Spain is experiencing an increase in cases and in some communities there is a certain degree of community transmission, but the truth is that those most affected by the outbreaks, such as Catalonia and Aragon, are stabilising and even decreasing. In fact, the epidemiologist has valued the measures undertaken by both communities: "what has been done can serve as a mirror for all those who may have to face outbreaks of great magnitude or a certain degree of community transmission", even when "a similar situation begins to be seen," he emphasised. Madrid is one of the communities "in which we have to focus the most now" as was done before with Catalonia and Aragon.

Land ready for new health centre on Coast The Orihuela City Council has made municipal land available to the Regional Department of Health for the construction of the new health centre in Orihuela Costa. The Valencian Government now needs to decide if it will finally entrust the construction to Ribera Salud or if the Conselleria will commit itself to its construction. The Orihuela Department of Health has sent a letter to the Ministry with this proposal, given the constant pressure suffered by the current Health Centre on the coast, which has 24,000 registered inhabitants and a large number of long-stay residents. The Centre also has a wide-spread territory that it serves, all of which is affecting the quality of health care received. The Mayor of Orihuela said: “We are demanding and that we need this to be executed as soon as possible to be able to give a better service to our community.” For these reasons, the City Council has offered the plot, located on Calle Nazaríes

(UR PAU-20 Ciñuelica), in order for the regional administration to decide if it will finally commission its construction to Ribera Salud or if the Conselleria itself commits to its construction. The Councillor for Health, José Galiano, has stated that "as soon as possible we will have an answer because these facilities should be a priority for the regional government, as they are for this Government Team.

Coronavirus cases registered in Dehesa de Campoamor The Shangrila Klub cocktail bar in Dehesa de Campoamor has taken the decision to close its doors after two workers tested positive for the virus. It is believed that transmission could have come from a third person, a 23-year-old holidaymaker from Madrid, who tested positive with symptoms after returning home – although the link has yet to be established. Following the recommendations of the health authorities, Shangrila Klub has temporarily closed and the facilities have been thoroughly cleaned. The announcement was made by the bar after two administration employees were placed in home isolation. The rest of the staff, who will undergo PCR tests are also quarantining at home until the results are known. The first case could have been a young woman from Madrid who was spending her holidays in the

town, which is busy with Spanish nationals from Madrid and Murcia who traditionally spend the summer season in this area. The woman began to feel ill a few days after returning to the capital of Spain, so the health authorities began to track and trace her movements. In addition to the cocktail bar, a disinfection team

has also been sent to the building where the young woman had stayed. The cleaner of that building, the only person there to have had contact with her has tested negative in a PCR test, but remains at home as a precaution. The girl’s friends and family have also tested negative but are currently confined to their homes.

Marijuana grown in cupboards in Torrevieja The Civil Guard detains two people for growing cannabis inside cupboards-greenhouses. Those arrested put music to the plants to promote their growth The Guardia Civil has detained a couple in Torrevieja, a 40-year-old man of Chilean nationality and a 32year-old Spanish woman, as alleged perpetrators of a crime against public health and a crime of illegal possession of weapons. During the search of the house, not a single room was found without drugs. The highlights were the two marijuana crops being grown inside cupboards and the plants in the interior patio which were entertained throughout the day with music, according to officers. Officers of the Torrevieja Civil Guard Investigation Area have dismantled a point of cultivation and sale of drugs, from a villa on an urbanisation in the town. Various sources suggested that this house could be home to a marijuana plantation, and believed that the property was also being used for the sale of drugs. With sufficient evidence and after the relevant checks, the officers were granted a search

warrant by the Instruction Court number 2 of Torrevieja. In each and every one of the rooms they found various types of drugs (marijuana, hashish, cocaine and amphetamine) in different formats (plants, buds, oil, resin, raw, in

doses or in tablets). In the living room they found two cans of marijuana, a box of rock cocaine, several baggies of cocaine, hashish pills, and hashish resin. The continued search uncovered money from the sale of the drug, about 1,400 euros, and two "cupboard-greenhouses", inside which the couple were growing a stock of marijuana plants. It was not the only place where there were plants, because in the backyard and in a storage room they found many more, which the considerate couple entertained all day with music to

promote the best growth. When they picked the fruits of their labour, they stored the marijuana buds in bags in the refrigerator, to maintain their freshness. The residents of the house turned out to be a couple, who are the president and vice president of a cannabis association in Torrevieja. Perhaps for this reason, they always needed to have a great variety of marijuana seeds with which to guarantee a constant source. To safeguard all the material and to protect themselves, they were armed with a 9mm calibre blank pistol, with a magazine. The tally ended with a balance of: 160 marijuana plants, 400 grams of marijuana buds, 165 grams of hashish oil, 160 grams of hashish resin, 125 grams of hashish, 15 grams of cocaine, 1 dose of amphetamine, 3 sets of precision scales, 1,400 euros and the gun. Both were arrested and after going to court, have been provisionally released with charges, pending trial. This arrest was achieved in part thanks to citizen collaboration, and has seen the termination of another point of sale of drugs in the city of Torrevieja taking drugs worth 6,500 euros off the streets.

As coronavirus cases rise, thousands protest in Madrid against face masks In the midst of a rise in coronavirus cases across Spain, and with the pandemic far from under control, between 2,500 and 3,000 protestors took to Madrid’s Plaza de Colón on Sunday, according to central government delegation sources, to protest the obligatory use of face masks. The demonstration, which had been organized via social media and had been promoted by public figures such as Spanish singer Miguel Bosé, saw attendees sign a manifesto “against the false pandemic,” in which they threw into doubt the measures taken by Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the accuracy of PCR tests to detect the virus, and denied that asymptomatic carriers of SARS-CoV-2 are able to transmit it to other people. For several hours, the demonstrators took to the square with chants of: “We want to see the virus,”“We are not afraid,” and “What kills is 5G,” the latter in reference to a conspiracy theory linking the latest high-speed cellphone technology to the coronavirus. The anti-vaccination campaigner and farmer Josep Pàmies was present at the event, and encouraged those present to convince others in their neighborhoods or towns that they should not be worried about the the coronavirus. Also present was poet and photographer Ouka Leele, who invited demonstrators to not be afraid of the virus and to breathe. “To be healthy we have to live,” she said. “We

can’t live like zombies with masks on in the streets.” The organizers were seeking to bring together a million people and called on demonstrators to use their masks as banners. But neither objective was met, with the number of protestors well below that target and most of those present opting not to wear their masks and thus break the law. “We can’t deal with all of the people who are not wearing masks, but normally we would fine them,” explained a police officer who was in the area. “We are not denying that the virus exists, but just the measures that have been taken to deal with it,” said Pablo

Rivero, 58, who came from Navarre in northern Spain to attend the demonstration. “The number of deaths that we’ve had doesn’t justify the country’s economy being stopped.” Next to him, Carmen López said that she had come to Colón to protest because she didn’t want her two children, who were with her, to grow up with the fear of a lie created by the government. While many of the protestors wore tshirts with references to Miguel Bosé, the singer was not present at the demonstration. The Spanish artist began his crusade against the coronavirus back in June when, in a long thread published on Twitter, he referred to the conspiracy

Torrevieja cuts sports costs by up to half The Torrevieja Councillor for Sports, Diana Box Alonso, has announced that the Department of Sport is making changes to the pricing structure of municipal sports facilities given the extraordinary and exceptional measures due to the global pandemic. These will remain in place for the 2020/21 season, and were published in the Official Gazette of the Province (BOP) on 4th August. Following the Royal Decree of 14th March 14, 2020, by which the state of alarm was declared and the suspension of sports and

leisure activities was established, the public was unable to use facilities to practice sports with many having paid in advance for some services such as sports schools, gym use, sports facilities passes etc

able to enjoy the use of paid for sports facilities, the money will be returned or they will be able to enjoy an extension of use of the sports facilities corresponding to the paid for time paralysed by the state of alarm.

Therefore, for the 2020/21 season enrolment at the Municipal Sports Facilities is reduced to 50percent of its usual public price. Likewise, the public price for use of the facilities for residents until the month of October is also reduced by 50 percent. For those members of the public who have not been

Diana Box explained that the users of municipal sports facilities who meet any of the following requirements could be entitled to discounts of 50 percent off. This includes: those 60 and over, retirees, under 16s, youth card carriers, single parent families, victims of gender violence, the disabled.

theories that claim that the Spanish prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, is part of a plan promoted by billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates who wants to take advantage of the “false” coronavirus pandemic to implant a microchip in the population via an equally fraudulent vaccination, in a bid to control the population of the planet. All of this with the help of 5G, a technology that, experts insist, has no effect on human beings. “For 8,000 old folk who have died, the economy of a country has stopped,” shouted on Sunday Carmen Polo, from Stop Confinamiento España, one of the groups that organized the protest against the obligatory use of masks in Madrid, a city that, according to official figures, has seen 75,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and 8,451 victims.

On Monday, the central government’s delegate in Madrid, José Manuel Franco, said that the failure to use masks at Sunday’s demonstration would have consequences. “There are always a few brainless people, in this case quite a few, who, unfortunately, do not comply with the law,” he said today during an interview with Spanish radio network Cadena SER. “I want to make it clear that this will be punished with the full force allowed by law.”

Purchasing a home in Spain isn’t that difficult! You view the home of your choice, make an offer, complete, then move in. The “viewing” part of the process was easy to do pre-pandemic, however now you need to be creative and more open minded with regards to the whole process. Here are 3 surprising facts about buying during a pandemic: 1. Don’t expect bargains! Yes, there are deals to be had, but there aren’t that many homes currently on the market for sale. When fewer homes are available, this means prices are holding. The more availability is the time when prices start to drop. It’s all down to supply and demand. Due to the lack of properties, some are even being sold within hours of hitting the market! 2. Prepare for online viewings! Whether you’re not currently in Spain, or just adhering to maintain social distance, you’re going to have to get used to “virtual” viewings. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to use this feature, but they will definitely help with your property search. Don’t be shy about asking questions either! Ask as many as you need

when touring the properties “virtually” with your Real Estate Agent! 3. Work with a Real Estate Agent you trust! There are lots of agents out there that will try to sell you anything. They won’t listen to exactly what you’re looking for, so you need to find one you trust. Buying during a pandemic you’ll have to have an in depth conversation with them upfront, to make sure they understand your requirements and will be there to pacify any concerns. You not only need them to be your eyes and ears, but your nose too! Yes! You need them to tell you if there are any unpleasant smells in the property! Until someone invents “smell-a-vision,” you’ll have to rely on your trusted Real Estate Agent! There are lots of tools and resources you can use to help with your online property search, so don’t be afraid to use them. Carwash without water! Only in Spain could a carwash end up with no water! In a red-tape blunder a new carwash business has been delayed opening as the water company has uncovered an old outstanding debt on the property after weeks of promising to connect the supply. Bill MacKay, owner of Costa Blanca Car Detailing, has run the business since 2011. It specialises in enhancing, correcting and protecting vehicle paintwork using ceramic coating technology. By far the most damage to our vehicles is caused by commercial car washes and even if you use the power wash systems, they fade the paint with very cheap products. Therefore, it made perfect sense for the business to expand with its own bespoke carwash. Bill found the perfect premises, a warehouse in Algorfa and signed the lease with the landlord. Hidraqua, the local water company promised for two weeks to send an engineer to reinstate the water supply and each time Bill chased, no issues were raised. As time went on Bill raised more questions as to why the premises still had no water and was getting increasingly frustrated with the excuses. Finally, when pushed the utility supplier admitted why the service hadn’t been reconnected.

Hidraqua refused to say whose name the debt was in and seemed reluctant to deal with Bill even when he offered to pay the outstanding debt. However, the supplier is now discussing the issue with the owner of the property and hopefully the situation will be resolved shortly. However, these things take time and nowhere more so than here in Spain and the business opening has already been delaying by several weeks. Bill said: “It has been a nightmare. We are trying to look at the humorous side...a carwash with no water, but these delays do

cost money. It is frustrating when we even offered to pay the outstanding dept. Not only can we not open the carwash, but neither can we carry on with the car detailing business which will run from the same premises. The idea was to combine everything under one roof, but we need the water supply to do any kind of work.” Luckily, with a solution just around the corner, customers can now book appointments for either element of the business on 623330812 or find further information at: www. Coronavirus cases still continue to rise Spanish PM refuses to name former King’s whereabouts

On Friday Spain reported 5,479 new cases of the novel coronavirus, according to the country’s Health Ministry (the latest figures available prior to going to print). The daily figure was down around 2,000 from Thursday, which included two days’ worth of data from Madrid, which continues to be the Spanish region with the most new cases, but the weekly number of infections continues to climb. In the last week, more than 27,300 new cases were confirmed, bringing the total number of COVID-19 infections since the state of alarm ended on 21st June to nearly 100,000.

It has been nearly two weeks since Spain’s emeritus king, Juan Carlos I, made the surprise decision to leave the country as pressure rose due to revelations about his finances. Since then, the whereabouts of the father of the current monarch, Felipe VI, have been unknown, something that is becoming an uncomfortable issue for the central government. Questioned by reporters, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said that the responsibility for providing information as to the former king’s whereabouts lie with the royal household and Juan Carlos himself. “We are different institutions,” he insisted.

More than half of all infections since then have occurred in the last two weeks. Although other European countries like France and the UK are now seeing upticks in cases, Spain continues to lead the pack in new infections.

The government is trusting that, given the ongoing coronavirus crisis and economic strife, the country’s institutions will provide stability in the face of the shock move by the emeritus king. In La Moncloa prime ministerial palace, they are aware that the situation continues to create tensions, but they believe that citizens have bigger issues to worry about, such as the pandemic, jobs and the state of the economy.

New hospitalisations are also beginning to increase with growing speed. According to the Ministry of Health, 238 more people had to be admitted to hospital for the disease – one of the highest numbers in months. The Ministry of Health also reported 12 more deaths, taking the total number of confirmed lives lost to 28,617. The numbers do not match up with local reports, however, as Catalonia alone reported 28 daily deaths on Friday. At the end of the week. Despite this, Fernando Simón, the director of the Health Ministry’s Coordination Centre for Health Alerts (CCAES), played down the high figures during his twice-weekly press conference. “It’s a gentle rise that allows for the implementation of control measures,” he said. “The percentage of asymptomatic [cases] is very high, over 50 percent, and we are detecting a lot of cases very early,” he added. Simón explained that Catalonia and Aragón are managing to stabilise infections and are even managing to reduce the number of cases in places that have been hard hit by new contagions, such as Lleida. On the other hand, other regions, such as “Valencia and Madrid,” are seeing “gentle and progressive” rises, he

explained. “Right now we are doing things well,” he continued. “It is true that it is causing us problems to explain this rises that we are observing. They are real, but at the same time a large part of this rise is also due to a significant rise in our capacity to diagnose [cases].” As Simón has done in recent days, he praised the management of the regions in the fight against the virus. “Aragón and Catalonia have shown that outbreaks can clearly be controlled,” he said. The two regions could “serve as a mirror” for those that are facing large outbreaks or uncontrolled community transmission in a certain area, he explained. Madrid, Simón added, is one of the regions “on which we most need to focus right now.” Simón pointed out once again that there is a large range in the percentages of asymptomatic cases that regions are detecting – the higher the percentage, in general, the better the job of contact tracing and monitoring is being done. However, he did not supply the data for this by region. The cumulative incidence of the virus over 14 days, the indicator that international organisations use to compare the epidemiological situation across countries, came in at 100 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Thursday in Spain,

a rate that is currently only exceeded by Luxembourg in Europe. France, with 32, and Germany, with 15, have much lower rates. Simón said that infections need to be lowered as much as possible before September arrives. “It’s a moment of risk because people who have been in different groups are going to mix once more,” he explained, in reference to the reopening of schools, which were closed back in March, and the return to work for many after the summer break. The CCAES director said that classrooms must be reopened, and that if the situation requires it, specific classes or schools will be closed rather than a blanket closure as was seen earlier in the year.

But the location of Juan Carlos, who is being investigated by Swiss and Spanish prosecutors over bank accounts allegedly held in tax havens, is adding another uncomfortable element to the ongoing crisis for the government. For the moment, the administration has opted to respect the decision – which may have been taken by Juan Carlos or his son, King Felipe VI – to keep his whereabouts secret, despite the political damage it is doing. Sánchez has tried to distance his administration from the Royal Household, and deflect questions from reporters, including those from international media outlets such as The New York Times. The Prime Minister made a brief appearance before journalists after speaking with King Felipe on Wednesday during their traditional summer meeting at the Marivent palace in Palma de Mallorca. His conversations with the head of state, he said, are subject to the

“appropriate confidentiality,” and as such he would not be revealing the information he has at his disposal. “The issues that need to be conveyed linked to the subject that you have referred to should be from the Royal Household or the person involved themselves and not the executive power,” Sánchez said in a recent response to a journalist’s question, avoiding expressly mentioning Juan Carlos I by name. The Royal Household, for its part, has opted not to reveal the location of the emeritus king, on the basis that he is a private citizen and that he will announce where he is located when and if he considers it convenient to do so. But Juan Carlos I still holds the honorary title of king of Spain, he travels with a diplomatic passport, he continues to form part of the royal family, he enjoys protection from Spain’s lower courts and has not renounced his dynastic rights. The government is fully aware of his location, given that he is traveling with four bodyguards from the Royal Household’s security service, which is headed up by a Civil Guard colonel. In the race to locate him, the media has claimed that he is in Portugal, the Dominican Republic, the United Arab Emirates and even New Zealand. The meeting on Wednesday between Sánchez and Felipe VI was the first official encounter since the news about the emeritus king’s exit from Spain was announced. The pair spoke for around an hour, the PM explained afterwards, and they focused on the coronavirus crisis, the economic emergency and the international situation. Speaking after the meeting, Sánchez emphasized the severity of the current situation across the world due to the pandemic, and linked it to the need for stable institutions, a message that was clearly aimed at strengthening the monarchy. “The worse the situation, which is extraordinarily complex due to the pandemic, the more important the normal functioning of public institutions is,” he said.

Torrevieja calls for Covid funding The local government claims that the Government of Spain has not allocated any aid to the 8,131 municipalities, the 41 councils, the 7 town councils and the 4 island councils that make up the Spanish local entities. The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolรณn, has presented a motion, to urge the Government of Spain to provide local entities with extraordinary funds to face the health, social and economic crisis caused by COVID-19. The local PP leader stated in his argument that local entities constitute the administration closest to the people and, in the face of the crisis caused by the pandemic COVID-19 they have been the first to implement measures to contain the spread of the virus, support the most vulnerable population, channel the wave of solidarity and lay the foundations for the recovery of the Spanish society and economy to take place as soon as possible after the end of the period of confinement. It should be noted that the vast majority of municipalities have postponed the payment of local taxes (taxes and fees) and / or cancelled fees as well as implemented tax cuts both for residents and for businesses in their municipalities. They have also been the first administrations

to increase direct aid to families and neighbours and to implement moratoriums on the payment of rent for public

housing, among many other measures aimed at mitigating the negative effects on society and the economy. The government of Spain, for its part, has not allocated any aid to the local entities. Zero euros for some administrations that have set up services to purchase basic necessities (food, pharmaceuticals and hygiene products) for those people who are confined at home and provide psychological and health care-telephone assistance to neighbours of their municipalities. For all these reasons, the

Popular Group is urging the Government of Spain to mobilise more than 40,000 million euros for economic reactivation and to avoid social bankruptcy. An advance of at least 50 percent of the outstanding amounts for the year 2020 is necessary to be able to face the treasury tensions caused by the coronavirus crisis and the measures that have already been adopted urgently in all the municipalities of Spain. In the motion Eduardo Dolon called for the launch of a fund of 5,000 million in direct and unconditional aid to local entities. For the creation of specific funds to rescue public transport (500 million euros) and to increase food aid through municipal social services (300 million euros). Authorisation, respecting and guaranteeing the autonomy that the Spanish Constitution and the laws grant to local entities for the management of their resources, in order to be able to use the savings of the LTL. - estimated at 28,000 million euros - to alleviate the dramatic situation faced by many families, many self-employed workers and SMEs in our country. And finally, he urged the Government of Spain to pay the 700 million that the State owes to all the local entities of the VAT corresponding to the month of December 2017.

Man saved by being righthanded Ambulance shift-leader Ester Armela, based in Madrid, has revealed why the hand you hold your umbrella in if you are caught out in a storm with forked lightning could save your life. “Carry it in your right hand,” she said in an interview on Cadena Ser radio this week. Ester was one of the paramedic team who attended to a man in the Madrid-region town of Torrelodones last Tuesday night when his umbrella was struck by lightning. Other than extremely painful, the victim's injuries are not lifethreatening and not expected to be life-limiting, although he is likely to be scarred. The reason he is alive and relatively well is because he is right-handed. “If he had been carrying his umbrella in his left hand, the lightning strike would, logically, have gone through his heart,” Ester explains. “And he'd probably have gone into cardiac arrest. As it was, the lightning entered via his right hand and came out of his left leg.” In the process, he suffered

groin injuries and various thirddegree burns along the part of his body the lightning cut through. Unlike in more northern, damper climates, electric storms in Spain nearly always involve forked lightning, not sheet lightning – the latter of which does not strike and is considered much safer. Sheet lightning is formed when a cloud covering stops it from reaching the Earth's surface, and appears to light up the whole sky.

Last week's sudden storms started in the north and northwest and gradually moved south and south-east, but petered out before they reached the Mediterranean coastlines. Residents and holidaymakers were half-hoping for a sudden cloudburst to break the humidity after a sweltering weekend, but other than a very slight drop in temperature and dark clouds overhead, those on the southern and eastern coasts and the islands escaped the storms altogether.

US continues tariffs on Spanish products The United States government has announced that it will maintain tariffs imposed on exports from the European Union last year – a decision that will affect Spanish cheese, wine, olive oil and pork products. The US introduced the duties on 18th October, 2019, after winning a dispute at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) over illegal subsidies given to aircraft maker Airbus more than 15 years ago. In 2004, the US argued that the French, Spanish, British and German governments had handed out loans to Airbus at interest rates well below market standards. The WTO ruled in favour of the US and decided that, as compensation for the damage caused to the US aviation industry, Washington could impose as much as $7.5 billion (€6.34 billion) worth of European exports. The decision principally affected products from Germany, the United Kingdom, France and Spain. The US Department of Trade said that some changes will be made to the list of products subject to the tariffs: a selection of

items from Greece and the United Kingdom will be removed, and replaced by products from France and Germany. But there will be no change to the list of Spanish goods. The decision means that a number of Spanish exports, including preserves, cured sausages and cheeses, will continue to be subject to a 25

percent tariff. The 10% duty on civil aircraft will also be maintained. “The EU and member states have not taken the actions necessary to come into compliance with WTO decisions,” said US trade representative Rovert Lighthizer, who added that the US was willing to continue to negotiate ways to resolve the Airbus dispute. “The United States will begin a new process with the EU in an effort to reach an agreement that

will remedy the conduct that harmed the US aviation industry and workers and will ensure a level playing field for US companies,” said Lighthizer in a press release. According to news agency Bloomberg, the US government has so far rejected four proposals from the EU on the issue. In a bid to reverse the US tariffs, Airbus announced in July that it would increase loan repayments to France and Spain. The EU may also be able to retaliate against the US offense if the WTO approves duties on US aircraft maker Boeing for unfair trade practices. On Monday, a bipartisan group of 13 US senators sent a letter to the US Trade Representatives Office to call for an end to the tariffs on EU exports. The letter, seen by Reuters, said that US “restaurants, retailers, grocers, importers and distributors” were experiencing “severe economic hardship due to the increased cost of goods.” The US Distilled Spirits Council last month also demanded an end to the duties, saying drinks firms on both sides of the Atlantic “have suffered enough.”

Abandoned Torrevieja Meningoencephalitis spa goes up in flames outbreak Fire-fighters have been tackling a blaze at an abandoned spa, which cost 1.5 million euros of public money. Toyo Ito, built ten years ago but never used, had already suffered a fire in 2012 which destroyed the roof. On Friday, flames once again swept through the building located in Punta la Víbora in Torrevieja, next to the Torreta III urbanisation. The entire crew of the Torrevieja fire station, with nine personnel, worked to extinguish the fire and the scene was also attended by civil guard and local police officers. The flames spread to an area of the protected salt marsh in the natural park, although that was quickly controlled and fire-fighters also worked hard to prevent it from spreading to the nearby houses about fifty meters from the building. The costly investment was made in 2006 and never completed because the City Council decided to locate it within the natural park surrounding the Torrevieja and La Mata lagoons and in the maritime-land domain. However, without a Coastal concession the completion of the

works was not allowed. The project was the idea of the then Mayor Pedro Hernández (PP) and was linked to a development project. The idea was to take advantage of the benefits of the mud of the Torrevieja lagoon and its popular mud baths. The work had a grant from the Tourism Excellence Plan of the Government of Spain. In recent weeks the building has been a meeting place for large ‘botellon’ (where young people meet, drink and socialise) and for years the surveillance on this

municipal heritage site has been minimal. The building was designed by the Japanese architect Toyo Ito, and arrived in Torrevieja at the hands of the architect Antonio Marquerie. Flames destroyed the roof of the building in March 2012. In recent years the building's spectacular helical structure has become one of the most striking examples of wasteful architecture and "postmodern ruin." Unfortunately its striking wooden structure is one that very few have been able to admire and could now be lost forever.

The West Nile virus, which is transmitted via mosquito bites, has led to an outbreak of viral meningoencephalitis in Seville, in Spain’s southern Andalusia region. A total of 19 people have caught the infection, which is a condition that simultaneously resembles meningitis and encephalitis. Of this number, 17 have been admitted into hospital and seven into intensive care. There are no vaccines or drugs to treat the hospitalised patients. The source of the outbreak was initially unknown, but lab tests done on 12 patients in Coria del Río and La Puebla del Río, two municipalities on the Guadalquivir River where mosquitoes are common, have shown the cause to be the West Nile virus, the Andalusian regional government confirmed last Thursday. In response to the outbreak, the Andalusian health department has recommended that the 42,000 residents of the areas in question take measures to avoid mosquitoes, such as the use of repellents and nets, and has activated a special protocol, which includes fumigations. While the Biblical reference may seem excessive, the area has seen

a surprising list of calamities. Last year, Seville was the site of the largest listeria outbreak in Spain’s history, with 222 cases, three deaths and seven miscarriages. In January, residents of Coria del Río discovered that the municipal sewage system was releasing toxic

gasses that were harmful to human health. In mid-March, the area – like the rest of Spain – was placed under a strict lockdown in a bid to curb the spread of Covid19, and now the West Nile virus is threatening to destroy the local economy just as it was starting to recover from the confinement measures. Controlling the spread Health experts say it is difficult to control the spread of the West Nile virus. “It is very complicated because the most important

vector is the common mosquito. The handful of people who have been infected in Seville means that there are many more cases, around 2,000,” estimated Joan Ramon Villalbí, a board member of the Spanish Association of Public Health and Health Administration (Sespas), who added that the virus cannot be transmitted from human to human. Villalbí is opposed to the use of “aggressive chemicals,” but Jordi Figuerola, a researcher at the Doñana national park biology center, says fumigation may be the only solution, as summer is already underway and mosquito numbers are 30% higher than recorded in 2019. “Ideally we would kill [the mosquito] larvae, but given what we have, we have to try to cut transmission. Fumigating is not a panacea but it has an effect,” he explained. As for the source of the outbreak, Figuerola blames heavy springtime rain and the coronavirus lockdown: “People weren’t out in the country, which meant that water accumulated in uncovered deposits and containers, and these turned into mosquito breeding grounds.”

Spain's most expensive house on sale for €32m If you happen to have a spare €32 million floating around in your wallet, you could become the owner of Spain's most expensive house currently on the market – a 10-bedroom ultra-modern villa on the exclusive Zagaleta urbanisation in Benahavís (Málaga province). Set in two-and-a-half acres of land and measuring 3,000 square metres (32,292 square feet, or three-quarters of an acre of indoor space), Villa Cullinan (in the photograph, from YouTube) boasts an indoor and an outdoor swimming pool, 14 bathrooms, and its own gym. But if you're seeking one with its own spa and saltwater swimming pool, gym, simulation golfing green, garage with space for 12 cars and 17 bathrooms, you'll find one on the same urbanisation at a cheaper price: €29m, making it the second-most expensive home currently on the national market. The third-, fourth- and fifthmost pricey residences on sale at present are in Puigpunyent (Mallorca), a palace of 2,800 square metres (30,139 square feet) with 14 bathrooms, a lift, a library, and even a private chapel, within

203 acres of land and an asking price of €26.5m; in Valldemossa, a 17th-century rural mansion with 80 bedrooms, 6,000 square metres (64,584 square feet) and 741 acres of land, with a price tag of €23m; and in Port d'Andratx, a seven-bedroomed villa right on the seafront going for €22m. Joint number six is in Penáguila, Alicante province, an old

farmhouse of 1,350 square metres (14,531 square feet), and a 2,400square-metre (25,833-square-foot) villa in Tui, Pontevedra province (Galicia, both on sale for €20m; number seven, a slightly better bargain at €19.9m, is 3,152 square metres (33,928 square feet) and in Marbella, where number eight, going for €19.5m and measuring 3,250 square metres (34,983 square feet), is also based. Closing the top 10 at just over €19m is a 1,000-square-metre (10,764-square-foot) country

house in Hornachuelos, Córdoba province (Andalucía). By region, some of the most expensive homes on sale are a serious bargain compared with the above top 10 – in the Canary Islands, for example, the 400square-metre (4,306-square-foot) villa in Maspalomas, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, will only set you back €9.9m. If you want to make your millions stretch even farther, head north: For a mere €8.25m, you can net a 2,000square-metre (21,528-square-foot) house in the coastal town of Gijón, in Asturias; for €4.2m, a house of 746 square metres (8,030 square feet) in Noja is the priciest in Cantabria, and a 600-squaremetre (6,458-square-foot) house in Sallent de Gállego in the Pyrénéen province of Huesca (Aragón) is a snip at just €2.5m. On the other hand, you may just not have enough in the bank to entertain any of these and prefer to spend a more modest amount – if so, apartments in Benahavís start at five-figure sums, and villas for under €300,000, or even under a quarter of a million.

Brits left homeless in Malaga mobile homepark fire A fire at a mobile home park in Malaga has caused devastation, leaving many expats homeless in its wake. Last weekend, last weekend residents saw smoke at the Lazy Days in Pueblo Fiesta, in the town of Mollina in Málaga province. One tried to put out the small fire with an extinguisher. At the time, the fire was slowly burning an empty property, but in just minutes, the strong wind and high temperatures turned it into an inferno. Luckily, residents escaped to the road, but the 70 people who live at the site had no time to save their belongings. In the blink of an eye, the flames devoured 40 homes and several cars. Following the blaze, the residents of the Pueblo Fiesta holiday park met with Eugenio Sevillano, the Mayor of Mollina, which is home to 5,149 people. The meeting, held to discuss the next steps for the residents, took place in the Euro-Latin American Youth Centre, which is also being used by the local council to accommodate 33 people who lost their homes and have no family members or friends to stay with. The residents, seated and serious, listened as Sevillano explained that they can stay at the centre for

15 days, that they will receive three meals a day, administrative help to recover their documents, and will also be to make use of the food, clothes and care products that have been donated to them by people in town. “All that is very well, but now I don’t have anything. I’ve lost 13 years of my life,” says Mr Painey, a British retiree, who recalls

“horrible, terrible” moments during the fire, for instance when gas canisters started exploding one after the other like fireworks. There were no hydrants at the site, and the fire-fighters quickly ran out of water when they arrived. “With water pipes the fire would have been quickly put out, but there weren’t any,” he says. That day, the fire brigade had been putting out a minor fire in another campsite nearby, and when they reached Pueblo Fiesta they were practically out of water.

They had to wait 20 minutes for more water to arrive. “That time was key, it would have been a different story with hydrants,” says the Brit. More than 30 fire-fighters were supported by a helicopter from the Andalusian Forest Fire Service (Infoca), which dumped 3,000 litres of water on the flames. “The fire was so high that we had to withdraw and wait for the canisters to stop exploding and the situation to stabilize,” explains Manuel Marmolejo, the president of the fire department of Málaga province. The fire service is investigating whether the campsite had all the necessary safety measures. The cause of the fire is still unknown. A judicial police unit of the Civil Guard in Antequera has taken charge of the case, although sources close to the investigation warn that it will be difficult to determine the source of the fire given its intensity and the fact that the prefabricated houses were made with very combustible material. Two people were injured with first-degree burns, and health workers also helped several residents who were experiencing panic attacks after seeing all their belongings destroyed.

Antonio Banderas announces Covid19 on 60th What should have been a day of celebration for Spanish actor Antonio Banderas, was changed by the coronavirus pandemic. The Hollywood star chose the day of his 60th birthday to publicly announce that he has tested positive for Covid-19 and that he is currently in quarantine. The actor conveyed the news via his Twitter and Instagram accounts, together with an image from his childhood. “I want to make public that today, 10th August, I am being forced to celebrate my 60th birthday in quarantine after having tested positive for the Covid-19 disease, caused by the coronavirus,” he wrote. The calm statement has caused concern among the admirers of the actor, given that he is in a risk group having already suffered a heart attack in January 2017. Banderas himself later announced that the condition was benign and had not “left behind any damage.” He explained at the time that he underwent surgery to implant three stents in his coronary arteries, as well as undergoing a thermoablation to reverse the arrhythmias that he had been suffering for some time. The actor played down his health problems at the time, and said that they had “not been as dramatic as people have written.” He used the same tone of calm in

the Instagram post in which he described how the coronavirus is affecting him. “I’d like to add that I am relatively well, just a bit more tired than usual and sure that I will recover as soon as possible following medical advice, which I hope will allow me to overcome the infectious process that I am suffering and that is affecting so many people all over the world.” His message continued: “I will take advantage of this isolation to read, write, rest and to continue to make plans to begin to bring meaning to my recently reached 60 years, which I am arriving at full of enthusiasm and hope.”

Banderas, who won the Best Actor gong at Spain’s Goya Awards for his role in Pedro Almodóvar’s Pain and Glory, spent the coronavirus lockdown in Málaga, without his current partner Nicole Kimpel, who he was able to see four months later. The businesswoman was in Geneva with her family during the worst of the Covid-19 crisis. Banderas has been active during recent months, and has been one of the celebrities who has donated medical material to hospitals in Málaga via the foundation Lágrimas y Favores, over which he presides.

Measures continue to control Covid As Covid-19 outbreaks grow more powerful in different regions of Spain, various regions are considering enforcing stricter measures to control the virus. Weekly total and two-week tallies continue to rise. Over the last two weeks, 45,532 people have been infected. Germany has now advised against travel to the Basque Country and Madrid, whereas previously it only warned against travel to the areas of Catalonia, Aragon and Navarra. The Italian region of EmiliaRomagna is also requiring all travellers from Spain to take a test for COVID-19 within a day of landing. If it turns out positive, it will enforce a two-week quarantine. The entire country of Italy could soon adopt the same measure, according to local media reports. The premier of Galicia, which has seen a sharp uptick in cases, has announced that he was considering banning smoking on

streets or outdoor patios when social distance cannot be kept to

avoid the transmission of coronavirus. Likewise, the government of the Balearic Islands is considering tightening up maximum occupancy rules. The islands have gone from one of Spain’s least affected areas to counting 231 new cases in the last day, according to local data. Regional authorities in the Spanish region of Extremadura also announced they would ask the Health Ministry for “exceptional measures” to confine certain groups and take more

measures to curb contagion. Extremadura had previously tried to limit gatherings to a maximum of 15 people, but judges said it was not legal. Courts have knocked down several regional laws to curb the spread of COVID19 in Spain. In Catalonia, for instance, the high court ordered the reopening of gyms and movie theatres and even lifted the order to confine a region. In Asturias, where bars must now close at 2am, the local hospitality association announced that it has filed a case in court hoping that the measures will be considered illegal and lifted. Earlier this week, Spain’s chief epidemiologist Fernando Simon said “the legal tools that regional governments have [to limit the spread of COVID-19] appear to be sufficient,” adding that they must be properly justified for the courts to accept them.

Spain plans special Podemos leader faces unemployment payment questions in court Spain’s Labour Ministry, unions and business associations are finalising an extraordinary payment for people who are out of work and have exhausted their unemployment benefits between 14th March, when the state of alarm was declared in Spain in a bid to slow the spread of the coronavirus, and 30th September. The possible pact between these different social groups would benefit around 550,000 people who are currently out of work, and would consist of a €430 monthly check that would be paid out during a quarter. The second part of the plan involves an improvement in the way that the amount of unemployment support that is paid to part-time workers who have been furloughed on Spain’s so-called ERTE scheme is calculated. A total of 150,000 people would benefit from this change. The new plan is aimed at fixing a shortcoming of the “social shield” that the government announced at the outset of the coronavirus pandemic. Unemployed people who were receiving benefits – which are time-limited in Spain – were unable to seek work due to the restrictions on movement under

the state of alarm. Those workers who were furloughed via an ERTE, however, were enjoying an extraordinary payment that did not reduce the rights that they had accumulated while working. The unions brought this argument to the table during negotiations about the ERTE scheme but it was not addressed until the latest extension to the furlough plan. The decree that extended the ERTE scheme until 30th September included an additional measure that obliged the Labour Ministry to meet with unions and business associations “as soon as possible” to seek “possible solutions” to the exhaustion of benefits by the unemployed during the state of alarm. According to the plan, there will be no means-testing requirements for recipients. Assuming that all of those who are eligible for the benefit request it – some 550,000 workers – the cost will be around €710 million over the quarter. As for the recalculation of benefits for part-time workers, the amount of money that they missed out on would be paid out in a single payment, according to the draft plan. A total of 150,000

people would benefit from this, according to sources present at the negotiations. Calculating the cost of this measure is a lot more complicated because the payments will depend on the contribution base of each worker and the hours that they worked when employed. The figures being proposed for the schemes are far from the amounts that have been included in other measures that have been adopted so far to mitigate the effect of the pandemic on the labour market. A total of 3.4 million workers have benefited from the ERTE furlough scheme, at a cost of more than €9 billion between April and July (€3.3 billion in May alone). The extraordinary payment for the self-employed has protected more than 1.4 million people and cost €1.2 billion a month. Once the text of this latest plan has been finalized, it will have to be approved by the Finance Ministry, which has made it known that it is up to speed with the negotiations and that a pact is on its way. However, ministry sources have stressed that the moment has not yet arrived for the department to begin participating.

Madrid judge has called several members from the leadership of Spanish political party Podemos to appear in court for questioning after a former lawyer from the left-wing group, José Manuel Calvente, made claims of irregular financing. The Unidas Podemos party, which is made up of a coalition of Podemos and the United Left (IU), is currently the junior partner in the coalition government headed up by the Socialist Party (PSOE), and its leader and founder Pablo Iglesias is one of Spain’s deputy prime ministers. As was first reported by Spanish news website Público, and was later confirmed by sources from Podemos, the magistrate has cited the following party members to appear in court: communication secretary and current member of Iglesias’s cabinet Juan Manuel del Olmo; party manager Rocío Esther Val; treasurer Daniel de Frutos; and employee Andrea Dedoto. The citations were made at the

end of July, after the judge in charge of the investigation took statements from Calvente. The former party lawyer has become a genuine headache for Podemos, having denounced alleged irregularities within the group, which was founded in 2014 in the wake of the so-called

15-M protests in Spain against corruption and inequality. Podemos responded to the latest news with resignation and criticised their former lawyer. “The judge is carrying out an exploratory investigation,” sources from the party said. “It’s a way of investigating that is prohibited and punishable in countries with the rule of law. It involves court proceedings that assume the guilt of those being investigated from the start of the investigation. The aim of this type of investigation is to create a trial

by media that lasts for months, and that then legally comes to nothing.” Calvente, who was part of the Podemos legal team until 2019, has gained huge notoriety in recent weeks. He left the party in December of last year accused of sexually harassing a colleague, a case that was shelved by a judge in July given a lack of evidence of “any objectively intimidating, hostile or degrading situation.” As well as filing this complaint regarding irregular financing, he has also accused the party of plotting a “set-up” with the so-called “Dina Case,” which began when a copy of the contents of a stolen cellphone belonging to one of Iglesias’s advisors was found in the house of a retired police officer, José Manuel Villarejo. A judge is now investigating how another card that contained a copy of the same information was damaged and had also been in the possession of Iglesias himself. The High Court has cited Calvente to appear as a witness in September as part of that case.

I want to leave my bullying partner Fifteen years ago, I left my husband to be with my current partner. It was totally my fault, and I take the blame for the break-up. But I quickly realised I had made a terrible mistake. My children hate him, and don’t visit. If I want to see them and my grandchildren, I have to meet up with them in secret when I am supposed to be food shopping. I can’t tell them how unhappy I am as they blame me for the break-up of my marriage to their father. I am retired and now I just watch television all day, and so long as I do this and stay in the house, my partner is happy. I have no friends - he’s seen to that. I desperately want him out of my life. Do I continue to live this lie pretending everything is fine or do I admit to my children that it has all been a sham and ask for their help to get rid of him for good? The trouble with being in a relationship with a bullying and controlling man is that you become so undermined and your confidence is so diminished that you stay in unhappy relationships when you should have got out years ago. Don’t waste any more of your life with this man. He is exercising control. You sound depressed. So tell your children the truth. They may be a little cross with you at first because by staying, you have made life difficult for them as well as for yourself. However, I am sure they will also be delighted and support you as much as they can to leave and start to make a new life for yourself. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. Spanish celebrity chef feeds Beirut blast victims Spanish celebrity chef José Andrés has travelled to Beirut to hand out food parcels following the devastating explosion which has left at least 150 dead and 5,000 injured. Andrés, originally from Asturias, has lived in the USA for over 25 years and runs the ThinkFoodGroup restaurant chain, which famously pulled out of a deal to open an eatery in a planned Trump Towers hotel in Washington DC in protest over the then presidential candidate's disparaging comments about Latin American migrants. As well as his successful dining enterprise, Andrés runs the charity World Central Kitchen, which gave out free sandwiches and soup last January to longunpaid civil servants during Trump's shutdown and provided meals for evacuees in the Bahamas during Hurricane Dorian. Andrés, additionally, offered a job to the dinner lady who was sacked for letting a schoolboy have a free $8 lunch because his parents could not afford to pay. Now, once again, the chef has come up trumps for an international disaster, having just landed in the Lebanese capital and, in one day, distributed 6,600 sandwiches in 30 different points in the city.

On his Twitter site, @chefjoseandres – the username for which he has changed to 'Please wear a mask! Do it for USA, please...' - Andrés writes: “Hello from Beirut! Late here...but checking in from World Central

Kitchen headquarters with the team. Tomorrow [for today], 6,600 meals to 30 locations...here's the start to the map! We are activating more restaurants and kitchens this week – more news soon!” Earlier, he posted pictures of his workers in Baltimore preparing pre-packed meals to fly over to Lebanon. On his arrival, Andrés posted a video of himself and captioned it: “Update from the streets of Beirut in the Mar Mikhael neighbourhood where cleaning continues after the explosion. Amazing to see young people leading the way. We at World Central Kitchen have been feeding many volunteers

and tomorrow will have a tent here with food!” José Andrés has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize as a result of his commitment to victims of major disasters and his active involvement in humanitarian missions. He always travels to the 'ground zero' of these catastrophes to help out in person – the video he made of himself in the Bahamas showed him battered by torrential rain and barely able to stay on his feet with the force of the wind – and has been described by those who know and have worked with him as 'an exceptional, generous and compassionate human being'. After the blast in Beirut, the Lebanese government resigned en bloc in response to mass protests and calls for answers. Moving footage has shown residents whose homes were completely destroyed being reunited with their rescued pet cats and dogs, clinging to them and sobbing. José Andrés owns restaurants in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami, San Francisco, Washington DC, México DF, and the island of Puerto Rico, where he also handed out food to victims of Hurricane María.

Looking forward to attending her sister April's wedding, the commitment-shy tomboy and classic cars aficionado, June Havens, catches a plane to Boston. Then, out of the blue, she crosses paths with the handsome and charming stranger with the killer sense of humour, Roy Miller, and just like that, June's life will never be the same again. Now, as the dashing man of intrigue plunges June into an excitingly risky world of high-speed car chases, deadly man-to-man fights, and lethal stray bullets, dangerous, no-nonsense adversaries are after the mismatched duo, hellbent on retrieving a tiny state-of-the-art device that's worth millions. But, who's this Roy Miller guy? Is he truly one of the good guys? Above all, could he be the one?

A cryptic message from the past sends James Bond (Daniel Craig) on a rogue mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, where he meets Lucia Sciarra (Monica Belluci), the beautiful and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal. Bond infiltrates a secret meeting and uncovers the existence of the sinister organisation known as S.P.E.C.T.R.E. Meanwhile, back in London, Max Denbigh (Andrew Scott), the new head of the Centre of National Security, questions Bond's actions and challenges the relevance of MI6, led by M (Ralph Fiennes). Bond covertly enlists Miss Eve Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) and Q (Ben Whishaw) to help him seek out Dr. Madeleine Swann (Léa Seydoux), the daughter of his old nemesis Mr. White (Jesper Christensen), who may hold the clue to untangling the web of S.P.E.C.T.R.E. As the daughter of the assassin, she understands Bond in a way most others cannot. As Bond ventures towards the heart of S.P.E.C.T.R.E., he learns a chilling connection between him and the enemy he seeks.

Travellers Choice Awards Local markets saved from This year's TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Awards are in – and Spain features on almost every list. Users of the tourism planning platform vote annually in various categories on cities, attractions, beaches, countries, hotels, airlines and other features of worldwide holidays, and the top 25 are highlighted on the site.

Família Cathedral, the Amatller House, the Ramblas with its 'flamboyant street performers', and the colourful Güell Park.

A handful of Spain's best bits appear year after year, and it is frequently one of the mostfeatured countries in each of the top 25 lists.

In 'Experiences' – which covers full-day tours, frequently off the beaten track and often with unconventional elements to them – Spain comes in at number 12 with an excursion to the spectacular monastery in Montserrat, Barcelona province, including lunch and gourmet wine-tasting.

In 'Trending Destinations', the Canarian island of Fuerteventura comes 16th, with recommended attractions mentioned including Sotavento beach, Cofete beach, the Corralejo nature reserve, the Tefia eco-museum, the annual pre-Lent Carnival, Baku water park, and the quaint, pretty town of Betancuria. In 'Popular Destinations', the Balearic island of Mallorca comes eighth – recommendations include Palma cathedral, Alcúdia old town, Muro beach, Marineland sealife park, the ancient Palma-to-Sóller train and also refers to famous islanders including artist Joan Miró and composer Frédéric Chopin who spent a winter there with French novelist George Sands – and Barcelona is ninth, with attractions listed as the Bellesguard Tower, the Sagrada

The list is, predictably, topped by London and Paris, followed by Crete (Greece), Bali (Indonesia), Rome, Phuket island (Thailand) and Sicily (Italy).

For the 'Beaches' award, most of those on the list were not traditional package-tour magnets – which included the ones chosen for Spain, Formentera's Ses Illetes in the Balearic Islands, and San Sebastián's La Concha, in the Basque Country, at 14 and 15 respectively. Spain got one entry in the 'Emerging Destinations' list, although residents and tourists would probably question whether Cala d'Or, Mallorca is really 'emerging' or, in fact, already established – but it is still very much worth a visit, and the TripAdvisor description makes it sound even more inviting: “With its calm waters, sandy bays and

family-friendly vibe, Cala d'Or is an easy-going alternative to Mallorca's more popular resort destinations. Charming cobbled streets wind past whitewashed buildings, and lengthy sunlight hours allow plenty of time for exploring the town's woodland surrounds.” For 'Restaurants' – a category where Spain arguably comes out top in the world and where Michelin stars are not exactly in short supply – two of Spain's most world-renowned eateries, run by celebrity chefs, made the cut; Azurmendi, in Larrabetzu, and Martín Berasategui in Lasarte, both in the Basque Country, at numbers 15 and 17 respectively. Spain did not achieve any entries in 'Attractions' nor in 'Hotels', where the winners included: in Siem Reap (Cambodia), Hanoi and Hoi An (Vietnam), Manuel Antonio and La Fortuna de San Carlos (Costa Rica), Funchal in Madeira (Portugal). The 'Airlines' category only ran to 10, none of which were Spanish but which were topped by Brazilian carrier Azul, followed by Singapore Airlines, Korean Air, Japan Airlines, Jet2, Air New Zealand, EVA Air (Taiwan), Virgin Atlantic, Qatar Airways, and Emirates.

counterfeit goods More than 1,500 pieces of counterfeit clothing and mobile phone accessories were seized during raids in Lorca, Aguilas and Totana. It is believed that the fake goods were bound for the popular coastal markets of the provinces of Alicante and Murcia. The Guardia Civil had been

watching four shopkeepers for a period of time, when the swoop operation exposed the fake sportswear clothing, bags, caps, trainers and mobile phone accessories. Officers were able to spot that the poor quality goods as counterfeit thanks to the distinct lack of official labelling or packaging. The hundreds of

mobile phone covers were missing the legal and mandatory brand license to ensure a legal sale. Once all of the evidence had been gathered, the four shopkeepers were rosecuted as alleged perpetrators of crime against industrial property.

El Corte Ingles pulls upsetting advert Spain’s El Corte Inglés department store chain has withdrawn a photo from its newly launched “back to school” advertising campaign, after members of the public voiced concern that it resembled an image of a suicide. “Given the consternation that one of the Back to School images has caused, we have decided to withdraw it from the campaign,”

a brief statement released by the company read. “Under no circumstances was the intention of this image related to the interpretation that has been given to it, and we apologize if anyone felt offended.” The photo in question shows a child’s feet wearing shoes sold by the store. The inert nature of the feet suggested a hanging to many social media users. The

image did, in fact, come from a full-size photo of the child jumping from his seat, according to company sources. Previous campaign The controversy has prompted the company to withdraw the photo from its website as well as from its poster campaign. In its place, the company’s website now shows a picture of a girl with her feet

crossed and sat on a raised surface. Some Twitter users criticized the photo using another promotional image from the chain, in which a group of children are seen pulling on a gym rope, adding fuel to the fire by claiming it was part of the same campaign. Sources from El Corte Inglés made clear that the image in question was actually from a previous year.

The perfect cuppa There’s nothing like a cup of tea. It can cure all manner of things and it always makes you feel better when you’re stuck at home feeling ill. For years, folk have argued about the best way to make a perfect cup of tea. And the main bone of contention has always been the business of adding the milk – should it be before or after the hot water goes in. After today, there is to be no more confusion, as The Queen’s

tea supplier has finally cleared things up. Royal tea makers Twinings has revealed that milk should be added BEFORE hot water - in this case, before pouring in the tea from a teapot. Stephen Twinings – the 10th generation of the famous teamaking family, which has been supplying tea to the Royals since 1837 – says: “When adding milk, pour it into the cup before adding your tea.

“This allows the milk to cool the tea, rather than letting the tea heat the milk.” Alas, Stephen wasn’t very forthcoming with information on what type of tea Queen Elizabeth II likes as he says, “The first rule of doing business with the Royal households is of course confidentiality.” But word on the street is that she likes a cup of Earl Grey tea with a splash of milk.

Lucky winner! A huge well doe and congratulations go to Sheila Coyne who scooped the 300e cash prize at the Emerald Isle recently, having won the jackpot in the Open the Box contest.

Discover broccoli Broccoli is a brilliantly versatile vegetable and there are so many amazing broccoli recipes out there. It’s great roasted, boiled, steamed, grilled and even stirfried. And you just can't argue with a broccoli soup, can you? Whether you’re having it as a side for your roast dinner or as part of a pasta dish, broccoli is dead easy to cook. So, here are a few ways to cook broccoli that’ll work a treat. One of the simplest ways to cook broccoli is to boil it. All you have to do for this cooking method is to fill a saucepan with boiling water from the kettle and place the pan over a high heat. After you’ve cut your broccoli into bite-sized florets, simply pop them into the boiling water

carefully and allow to cook for 5– 6 minutes. Check if they’re done by sticking a knife into the stem of one of the florets. It should go in fairly easily. If it doesn’t, the broccoli probably needs another couple of minutes. Before serving, drain the florets in a sieve or colander. Steaming broccoli is a brilliant way of keeping all that tasty broccoli flavour. All you have to do is place the florets in a steamer over boiling water. Cook them for 5-6 minutes. Again, check if they’re cooked with a knife. Continue to steam if the stem still feels hard. If you’re looking to stir-fry your broccoli, heat 1 tbsp of oil in a frying pan over a medium-high

heat. Add the florets, and cook for stirring minutes; 4-5 continuously. And why not add crushed garlic, lime zest or spices to bring your broccoli to life a little more? If you’re having a Sunday roast, why not include roasted broccoli as one of your veggies? Simply pre-heat your oven to 180°C fan. Spread your broccoli florets on a baking tray, and drizzle with a little olive oil. Season with salt and pepper and pop them in the oven for 20 minutes. Check them after 15 minutes to make sure they’re not catching. Again, you can jazz up your roasted broccoli by adding lemon zest or dried chilli flakes before popping them in the oven.

Pink Prosecco In May a piece of good Prosecco-related info was released and went almost unnoticed amongst the bigger (and obviously more important) news bulletins at the time. After a lengthy battle between the government, and producers in Italy, the green light was eventually given to allow Prosecco producers to create a pink-hued version. It’s been in the pipeline since at 2018, but with many believing it would never truly be a Prosecco, the Prosecco DOC Consortium announced that it has updated rules for production, and pink Prosecco plans were unanimously approved by the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies’ National Wine Committee. Yes, you may have had sparkling rosé in the past, but it hasn’t technically been Prosecco rosé. This move is particularly important as Prosecco sales were dipping due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the restrictions in production, so it couldn’t have come at a better time. Now, if you’re unfamiliar with the tradition and regulations around Prosecco production in Italy, let us fill you in. Prosecco is an Italian DOC or DOCG sparkling white wine produced in specific regions in Italy (Veneto and Friuli Venzia Giulia), and named after the town of Prosecco near Trieste. Unlike Champagne, where it’s actually

illegal to call your fizz Champagne unless it’s from that specific region, Prosecco is a little less protected. Prosecco must be made using a minimum of 85 percent Glera grapes, however this means that countries where the Glera grape is grown such as Australia, Argentina and Romania, can technically also produce a Prosecco.

Pink Prosecco must be still be produced from a majority of white Glera grapes, but it will also include 10-15 percent of the red Pinot Nero (aka Pinot Noir) variety of grapes to achieve its colour, which will hopefully be a “pink more or less intense, shining, and with a persistent foam,” according to the Consortium’s announcement.

However, EU regulations do prevent producers selling Prosecco unless it’s from Italy, and if you’re wanting to find a good-quality Prosecco look for a DOC or DOCG labelled bottle which means the strictest standards have been met in production.

The new pink bubbly is as delicious as it is beautiful, and wine buffs expect these to soon account for 20 percent of all Prosecco sales. The first producers have promised us a surprising, fresh and fruity flavour.....We’re giving our posh glasses a good polish in preparation.

Gordon Ramsay critiqued his daughter's cooking Gordon Ramsay has brought his true talent (yelling at people that their cooking is bad) to TikTok. It seems that no one is safe from his wrath, not even his own family, as he recently commented on a video by his daughter Holly and had some unkind words re: her cooking. Holly's video began with her following one of her dad's recipes for potato gnocchi and she already lost points from him because she didn't peel her potatoes (although they do look peeled). Holly's famous dad also took her to task for not cooking her potatoes long enough, which, as someone who has made a lot of gnocchi in her time, really does make a difference. In the end, Gordon seems displeased with the meal overall, which frankly I think looked delicious, hard potatoes notwithstanding, but I am neither her dad nor am I a world-famous chef so my opinion means nothing! He ends it by

saying "Young lady, you should know better. Shame on you, Holly!" Tough words from her dad and the rest of TikTok definitely took notice that uh, yeah, like none of us are safe now! "When your dad roasts you on TikTok," one person wrote. "No one is safe from him. If Gordon comes for you it's over," another said. And it seems like Gordon is really taking this new TikTok series seriously, judging by the fact that he already posted ANOTHER video after that one, roasting someone for making mac & cheese pizza. So there you have it... if you're going to cook on TikTok, make sure you're ready to get absolutely destroyed by Gordon.

Worst and best foods for your teeth Even though the number of cavities has decreased significantly in recent decades, a large number of people, particularly children and adolescents, still suffer from this health issue. To prevent tooth decay, your dentist has surely told you to brush your teeth frequently and go to the dentist on a regular basis. But did you know that diet also plays a big role in determining your oral health? Best... Milk - Rich in calcium and vitamin D, milk is good for your oral health. Even if it contains lactose, a type of sugar, it still keeps cavities at bay. However, children who suck on a bottle of milk in bed to fall asleep aren’t reaping the benefits. Instead, the milk is causing tooth decay. Cheese - When you eat cheese, you’re fighting dental erosion, a risk factor for cavities. According to researchers, eating cheese reduces acidity in the mouth (bacteria love acidic environments) by promoting saliva production. Yogurt - When it comes to fighting dental decay, yogurt is one of the best foods. Yogurt helps re-mineralise tooth enamel, while decreasing mouth acidity. Just be sure to choose a sugar-free yogurt to reap the benefits. Cranberries Although the effectiveness of cranberries in treating urinary tract infections is not universally accepted by the scientific community,

this small red berry is scientifically recognized as one of the best anti-cavity foods. It’s packed with polyphenols (antioxidants) that are particularly effective in combating oral acidity and dental plaque. Nuts - Packed with protein and healthy fat, nuts like cashews help get rid of harmful bacteria from the mouth and remove sticky foods, like dried fruit. Just be sure to steer clear of nuts coated with maple syrup or honey, as the sugar can lead to cavities.

polyphenols in cocoa are great at combating the bacteria responsible for dental plaque and oral acid, according to research. Apples - They may be sweet and acidic, but apples are actually good for your teeth. Biting into an apple stimulates

Sweets - Kids know they shouldn’t eat too much candy if they don’t want to get cavities. Loaded with sugar, candy, especially chewy candy - like caramel, taffy, and licorice - that sticks to your teeth are especially bad for your enamel. Chips - They may not be as sweet as candy, but chips and crackers can be just as bad for your teeth. These starchy foods stick to your teeth, promoting tooth decay.

Onions - Famous for giving you bad breath, onions are nevertheless one of the best foods for your teeth. Some of the chemical compounds found in onions directly attack several types of bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease. For best results, choose organic, locally grown onions. Dark Chocolate - Yes, you can fight cavities by eating chocolate! But you need to opt for dark chocolate, which contains little sugar and lots of polyphenols. According to research, the

Worst... Soft drinks - in addition to promoting obesity, soft drinks are one of the worst foods for your teeth. High in acid and sugar, soft drinks attack your tooth enamel. If you drink them regularly, you’ll be putting your teeth at higher risk of dental erosion, sensitivity, and cavities.

saliva production and gets rid of the bacteria responsible for tooth decay. After eating an apple, however, wait about 30 minutes before brushing your teeth to avoid brushing away the enamel.

Dried fruit - It may be packed with vitamins, minerals, and fibre, but dried fruit can be bad for your oral health. Sticky and sweet, dried fruit is a great food source for bacteria that cause tooth erosion and cavities. Alcohol - It’s not the alcohol content in alcoholic beverages that’s bad for your teeth - the real culprit is actually the

sugar. When the sugar in alcohol combines with the bacteria in your mouth, it forms plaque, a major risk factor for cavities. Energy drinks - Consumed in large quantities, energy drinks aren’t just bad for your health - due to their high acidity levels, they can also cause “irreversible damage to teeth,” according to one study. If you consume energy drinks on a regular basis, you’re more likely to develop cavities than the average person. Ice cubes - Chewing on an ice cube during the summer may be refreshing, but it’s not the best habit to adopt when it comes to your teeth. Eating ice cubes on a regular basis can weaken tooth enamel. And a tooth whose enamel has eroded is more sensitive to temperature changes and more susceptible to cavities. Fruit Juice - Sweet and acidic, fruit juice, especially fruit cocktails and punches, are bad for your teeth. By causing dental erosion, fruit juice increases your risk of developing painful cavities. White bread/Pasta - Looking for another good reason to stop eating white bread? Did you know that it’s bad for your oral health? The simple carbohydrates in white bread have the bad habit of sticking to your teeth. By staying longer in the mouth, they promote the onset of tooth decay.

Since the dawn of time, we’ve been storing fruit and vegetables in the bottom drawer of our fridge. We’ve always been told that those drawers are the exact spot to keep fresh produce to get the most out of them and make sure they stay fresh for longer. In fact we all thought that is exactly what those drawers were created for, right....wrong! A lady recently found a label on her fridge drawer that said: “Do not store fruits or vegetables in the chilled space. The fruits or the vegetables could get frozen.” The woman posted the photo to the Mums Who Clean Facebook group, and asked: “So

I've been doing this wrong my whole life?” A lot of people commented that they’ve always used the drawers for fruit and vegetables, but admittedly sometimes their produce does get ruined as it freezes a little. Luckily, Senior chef at HelloFresh, Mimi Morley, is on hand to end the confusion once and for all. She said that, yes, we should be storing fruit and vegetables in the drawers, but it’s not quite as simple as that… “It’s a common misconception that the two drawers at the bottom of the fridge are the same,” Mimi said. “In fact, each drawer has its own exclusive purpose with one designed to

create a high humidity, and the other a low humidity. “Fruit and vegetables which are best served with a crisp crunch and may be sensitive to moisture loss, such as cabbage, carrots and strawberries, should be kept in the high humidity drawer (30-40 degrees) to avoid wilting. “The low humidity drawer should be stocked with goods that produce high-ethylene gas and aren't as sensitive to moisture loss such as kiwis, stone fruits and apples. This will keep the products as juicy as can be and avoid unnecessary food waste.” So, there you have it...who knew popping something in the fridge was so complicated?

Plants that repel bugs and mozzies Citronella The citronella candles on your patio are made with the oil that comes from this plant. It is by far the most popular plant that repels mosquitoes. It has a very pungent odour and can be placed in pots or mixed in with your centre-pieces when entertaining outdoors. Petunia This perennial is sometimes known as “nature’s pesticide,” because it can repel aphids, tomato hornworm, asparagus beetles, leafhoppers, and squash bugs. Lavender Lavender has a fragrant smell that deters mosquitoes. It likes to be hot and dry, so it’s perfect for summer. You can also apply lavender oil to your skin as a natural repellent. Nasturium It repels whiteflies, squash bugs, aphids, several beetles, and

cabbage loopers. This one will help other plants in your garden, too. “They produce an airborne chemical that repels insects, protecting not only themselves but other plants in the grouping. Rosemary It not only adds flavour to your dishes, but it will also help keep the bugs away. This one is another plant perfect for summer heat because it likes to be dry. This plant also adds texture to arrangements, so place it in an outdoor centre-piece to repel the bugs. Basil It’s an annual herb and repels houseflies and mosquitoes. Ensure that the plant gets six to eight hours of full sun daily, and its soil should be moist and welldrained. When you see blossoms start to form, pinch them off at the base to ensure the besttasting leaves. This versatile herb can also treat mosquito bites, Johnston

adds. She recommends rolling several leaves between your hands to release its natural oil and apply to your bite to ease swelling. Lemongrass Lemongrass is closely related to citronella and repels mosquitoes, but unlike the latter, it’s edible and is commonly used in Southeast Asian cooking. It can grow three- to five-feet tall and adds lots of extra height and texture to the garden, so it needs a larger container. Mint Refreshing mint can be used in dishes and cocktails, but it has an added bonus. It’s a perennial that repels mosquitoes. Mint is easy to grow, but once established in a garden, it can be tricky to remove. Plant it in a pot instead and frequently pick its leaves to keep the plant at its best. You can grow the plant indoors all winter long and it will help keep flies outside, too.

And while there is still an unhealthy risk attached to the plant-based alternatives, researchers at Stanford Medicine found that ditching real meat for fake will significantly help to reduce heart conditions, including high cholesterol. The team measured participants' levels of trimethylamine N-oxide, or TMAO, which has been linked to cardiovascular disease, and they discovered that those eating plant-based meat had much lower levels. They studied 36 participants over the course of 16 weeks, and for eight weeks, half of the group ate the plant-based diet, while the others ate a diet consisting

primarily of red meat and a small amount of chicken. Then, the groups switched for the rest of the study period, eating on average two servings of meat or plantbased alternatives per day. Researchers observed that those who ate the red meat diet first had an increase in TMAO levels, but that significantly decreased when they switched to eating plant-based alternatives.

Different Coloured Pedestrian Crossings We have been asked many different times about the significance of other colours used on pedestrian crossings. Most people are aware of what we might call a “zebra”, with black and white alternating stripes across the road, but what about the red ones, or blue ones or any other colours?

thereof, forming a set across the road where drivers of vehicles or animals must let pedestrians pass. However, in answer to your question about different colours used on crossings, the last phrase, “NO podránutilizarselíneas de otroscolores que alternen con las blancas”, states that you must not use other colours that alternate with the white ones. Therefore, by the legal definition set out in this document, the only colours which should exist on pedestrian crossings are white, and the colour of the road.

However, that study was done by an artist rather than a road safety professional, although the impact was successful. By creating a surface which drivers looked out for could improve the awareness of the crossing, but other experts also suggest that these could do more damage than good, as distracting a driver from the vulnerable road users is a recipe for disaster, as drivers look at the crossing and not the people on it or waiting to cross. You will see that many of the coloured crossings are on raised humps, again traffic calming measures, but a lot of these humps

also don´t fall in with the legal requirements set down by law, and so quite a lot have been removed in recent years. There are many different reasons why crossings are different colours, but as the majority of those which have been marked other than that laid down in law are under the control of local authorities, it is the reasoning for each one of those that is the only answer to the question, as nationally, all we can say it what the law clearly states, “NO podránutilizarselíneas de otroscolores que alternen con las blancas”.

However, the more complex answer comes about when we look at different methods of traffic calming, means to slow down road traffic to create a safer environment for all. There have been many different studies relating to traffic calming, and highlighting pedestrian crossings better has been the outcome of some of that research.

There are two ways of answering the question, and so we will start with the simple and legal one. Article 168 ofthe Tráfico, Circulación y Seguridad Vial, says... “c) Marca de paso para peatones.

alternen con las blancas.” To explain what that means in as literal way we can, it states that pedestrian crossings are formed of a series of wide lines arranged from the pavement and parallel to the axis

A study in 2014 concluded that the best way to make crossings safer for pedestrians was to “transform these pedestrian passages into eyegrabbing spectacles: a school of colorful fish, a skein of yarn, a skeleton, a row of large-caliber bullets.”

New 2021 Hyundai Kona N Hyundai is readying the new Kona N for launch. These latest spy shots show the Korean firm’s upcoming performance SUV tackling its handling development programme at the Nurburgring, ahead of its scheduled launch next year. When it eventually goes on sale across Europe, the new Hyundai Kona N will join a growing marketplace of hot compact crossovers – a niche which is currently dominated by the Volkswagen T-Roc R, Audi SQ2 and BMW X2 M35i. The mule in these latest images has shed some of its camouflage relative to previous prototypes, giving us a better look at the crossover’s styling. Like all of Hyundai’s N-branded performance models, the Kona N will receive a more aggressive body kit, a new front splitter and a redesigned grille. At the rear, there’s an enormous tailgate spoiler and a new diffuser, which houses a pair of large-bore exhaust tips. The entire car also sits lower to the ground than the standard model thanks to a new suspension system and, behind the new alloy wheels, there’s an uprated braking system made up of enlarged discs gripped by beefed-up calipers. Back in 2018, Albert

Biermann, Hyundai’s research and development chief hinted to Auto Express that the new Kona N was in the works – and that it would be powered by the same turbocharged 2.0-litre fourcylinder petrol engine as the i30 N. He said: “It has to be the i30 N powertrain, really. Of course, we can give Kona different specifications on suspension and steering, although there are some common components we can use in that area as well, because it’ll be front-wheel drive, like the i30 N. But we already know that it has to be that car’s engine and gearbox for the Kona N.” As such, the Kona N should have at least 247bhp – although there’s scope for even more grunt, as Hyundai’s range-topping i30 N Performance turns up the

engine’s wick to 271bhp and 378Nm of torque. Like the hot hatchback, the Kona N will send drive to the front wheels via the same electronically controlled limited-slip differential and sixspeed manual gearbox. The Kona N will likely make its official debut towards the end of this year, with the order books opening in time for Spring 2021. It’ll be joined by the new i20 N hot hatchback, forming part of Hyundai’s offensive on the mainstream performance market. Hyundai’s growing roster of Ntuned vehicles will offer fresh competition for the class-leading performance models in the Band C-segments, with the i20 N rivalling the Ford Fiesta ST, the i30 N taking on the Volkswagen Golf GTI and the Kona N tackling the Cupra Ateca.

Slow Down! This week, we received a question from a concerned Orihuela Costa resident about the speed cars drive around in the local area.

Question: I like to read your column N332 Traffic Department. Can you tell me the best way to go about finding out the permitted speeds allowed in Orihuela Costa and how to get signs put up on the streets. I moved in January this year to a new flat on c/e Níagara. This street has heavy traffic starting at 6.00 am until 11.00 am and then later in the evening. It is a through road from N332 over the motorway to Villa Martin, Entre Golf etc. There is a nursery school and CDM sports centre with some speed bumps on my part of the street but the drivers still drive like Lewis Hamilton. Many areas nearby are designated 30 km which drivers completely ignore, except for me perhaps. Why do so motorists drive so fast and get away with it. No police patrols in sight except on N332. Regards, Jean Persson, permanent resident for 11 yrs.

Answer: Hi Jean, thank you for your feedback, we´re pleased you like to be kept up to date through the column in Costa Blanca People. The short answer to your question is that you need to contact the town hall with your justified complaint. We will give you a little more detail and explain the reason for this. You mention the N-332 road, which is one of the roads of the national network, hence the “N” prefix, which, in terms of traffic law, are policed by the Guardia Civil. The local

roads come under local authority control and it is therefore the Local Police who normally enforce traffic regulations on these roads. That doesn´t mean the Guardia Civil wouldn´t act if they found somebody breaking the law, of course they would, but it does not fall within their normal jurisdiction, or indeed their normal patrols. The local police are able to borrow speed camera equipped vehicles from the traffic department, the DGT, to help them enforce problematic areas, which as you mention a school is clearly an area of concern, and many local town halls choose to take them up on the offer of using the equipment for frequent checks and patrols. However, that all relies on the police, and indeed the town hall, being aware that there is a problem in the first place. Orihuela is one of the largest municipalities in the area, in geographical terms, and so the police have a large area to cover. Although there is a police base at the town hall on the coast, they are not able to be everywhere at the same time and would focus on areas of concern. Again, assuming they have been made aware that there is a problem in the first place. In answer to the question as to what the speed limits are, Article 50 of the general traffic law tells us the maximum permitted speed on urban roads. The law states that the maximum speed that vehicles must not exceed on urban roads and crossings is generally 50 kilometres per hour, except for vehicles that transport dangerous goods, which

need to drive at a maximum of 40 kilometres per hour. These limits may be reduced in particularly dangerous journeys by agreement of the municipal authority with the owner of the road, and on urban roads, by the decision of the relevant body of the local municipality. In other words, where no signs exist to the contrary, the maximum permitted speed is 50 kilometres per hour, but if signs do say otherwise then that limit is enforced. We also know that this maximum of 50 is considered too high, so much so the DGT is currently in the process of enforcing a more restrictive 30 kilometre per hour limit on around 80% of the local road network, nationally, a process which began some months ago and is ongoing. This is also part of the new onus on “shared spaces” on the roads, where cycles, cars and other vehicles all mix, hence the need to reduce the maximum speed. Finally, you ask why so many drivers ignore the limits which are fundamentally designed to keep everyone safer on the roads. That is a far more complex question to answer, but all too often it is led by complacency and the fact that drivers “get away with it” for so long, thus bringing us back to the original point we made. It is up to the local police to enforce traffic law on the local roads, but they may not be aware of the problem in your area, and so your complaint should be highlighted with the town hall who then have the power to ensure the police are made aware and take appropriate action to help reduce the risk.

Elche CF Still in the Running Thursday the 13th August 2020 will be remembered for two reasons. The cancellation due to Covid of Elche’s famous Nit de l’Alba in honour of the Virgen of the Assumption, and the night that Elche CF took on Real Zaragoza in an empty stadium for the 1st leg of the play off semi final. The match started at 22:00 and would have been a sell out, instead the streets around the stadium were closed and patrolled by the Police. Fans watched nervously on televisions and via the internet. It was going to be a tough match as Zaragoza had spent most of this season in 2nd place, and only just lost out on the last automatic spot to Heusca. Real Zaragoza started the game without their in form striker Luis Suarez, as he had been recalled back to Watford after the loan agreement had expired. He was going to be missed as he was the league’s 2nd top goal scorer, all good news for Elche. The game started very slowly with equal possession for both teams and very few attempts on goal. The game changed on 30 minutes. The incident involved Jonathas, Elche CF’s Brazilian striker who arrived in the January window for his 2nd spell at the club. Following his recovery from Covid, he had been on great form. Tonight he looked overly fired up for the fixture, always dangerous. After a coming together with a Zaragoza player, Jonathas kicked out. This took place right in front of the referee, but it still needed to go to VAR. The watching fans already knew the result, a red card and

he was sent off. Elche CF had to face an hour with just 10 men. Half time came and went. It was a half of few chances, with both teams struggling to even find the goal. The final whistle blew, with a 0-0 scoreline, a good result for the 2nd leg of the semi final which was played on Sunday evening in Zaragoza at the Estadio La Romareda. The 2nd leg started very positively for both teams. Elche playing in their away kit of green and black and Real Zaragoza in their famous white shirts and blue shorts. Escriche up front for Elche had his first shot saved, only for the ball to ricochet off the back of a defender and proceed once again towards the goal where, sadly it rolled past the wrong side of the post. Zaragoza then had a 20 yrd screamer which was saved by the trusty hands of Edgar the goalie. Escriche had another couple of chances, unfortunately both of which were offside as the Real Zaragoza defence held their line. The home teams best chance came on 34 minutes. The Zaragoza striker received a brilliant pass and had a clear shot on goal, but Edgar was on form and yet again made the save. The 2nd half started 0-0. Both sides threw everything they had at the match using all 5 subs! The game changed on the 81st minute when Elche veteran, Nino, shot and scored Gooooollllllllllll. Juan Cruz sprinted the ball down the sideline and slid it across the goal face. It missed the feet of both an attacker and a defender and landed in front of Nino,

who placed it soundly at the back of the net. The 40 year old Capitan could not have had a bigger smile if he had been the Cheshire Cat! The game wasn’t over. On the 87th minute Zaragoza had a penalty, but nothing was getting past Edgar, so this didn’t either! Deep joy for all Elche CF fans, our team is now only 2 matches away from promotion to La Liga! Once spectators are allowed into

stadiums, EuroTourGuide will be organising coach tours and tickets to all of the Elche CF home matches. Visit the website www.eurotourguide.com to

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

I tell you what, that relationship between Manchester City and European football is getting more and more complicated, isn’t it? We’ve had the whole ‘is it on, is it off?’ saga in relation to their alleged and consequently entirely above-board financials and a ban from the competition. And now, in the blink of an eye, they are out0 of this season’s (or is it last season’s?) tournament as well. This what happens when Peppy G treats the knockout stages as his own personal experimental science laboratory once again. Does he not learn? Will there be a season where he goes through the knockout stages just picking an XI playing in the same kinda style that has brought them much of their success to date? Of course, Pepologists will point to the fact that he got his funky tactics bang on when knocking out Real Madrid but it’s highly likely they could have won that game without stick Phil Foden out there as a false nine. I mean, La Liga times aren’t exactly great shakes at the moment, are they? To be fair to Pep, he was right not to point the finger of blame at VAR given that had he, he’d have realised there were three fingers pointing straight back at the person who monumentally cocked this one up - himself. Sure, Raheem and Ederson could have done just a little bit more to help the cause on the night but the damage was already done.

I do wonder whether Guardiola’s most loyal of loyal generals on the field of play, Fernandinho, even raised an eyebrow when his gaffer announced that his latest brainwave consisted of him playing on the right of a backthree. Because if Fernandinho starts to think something is crazy, then maybe it is not such a good plan after all. Transfer rumours are still all the rage even if the new season does kick off in just under two weeks. This one started to break before Citeh found themselves on a plane back to Manchester, but Thiago is available from Bayern and he’s only going to cost £27m. Liverpool are salivating at this prospect but need to move quickly if they want to get the deal done - after all, City are going to splash some cash just to show everyone how serious they are about winning the Champions League before we all die. And if they cannot get Thiago then Tottenham’s Harry Winks will do just as well. Well, maybe not just as well, But he could definitely be the next Englishman to head to the Etihad and learn that he’s not really that good at all ala Fabian Delph, Jack Rodwell, Scott Sinclair, John Stones and various others. Of course, Winksy might end up as good as Sterling, Kyle Walker and Foden and is being held back by Jose Mourinho. It wouldn’t be the first time, right? Liverpool have got their summer recruitment rocking and rolling in by bringing in a Greek left-back that I guarantee only the hipsters will have heard of. They’d be keen to add David Brooks to the squad if Bournemouth decide to go back on their promise of a

fire sale. Given they’ve already flogged Nathan Ake and goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, I’d respectfully suggest they are going back on their promise. Frank Lampard’s Chelsea tickled West Ham pink during the week by offering a mere £50m for Declan Rice. Lamps is also confident a deal can be done for Ben Chilwell and Leicester would probably agree - providing that deal comes in and somewhere around £85m or even a little more. Lampard also seems to think that if the biggest pain he has is the state of his defence, then the paracetamol his looking for is John Stones. And if he can’t get Stones, he’d like to join the queue forming for the signature of Brighton’s Ben White. Frankly, he’d be better off just joining that queue and saving time. If you thought Manchester United wanting Josh King in the last window was a little bit weird, this one is right in your wheelhouse. PSG, clearly thinking they are on to something by picking up strikers relegated from the Premier League given who scored their winner against Atalanta, fancy a bit of the Bournemouth striker. On that theory, they may as well snap up Callum Wilson as well before someone else does. There’s plenty going on at Arsenal as well as they continue to get rid of all the people responsible for bringing David Luiz to the club and then giving him an extra year. At the last count, the last men standing were Edu and Mikel Arteta himself who will be given the final say on transfers. Drunk on their new power, a threeyear deal on £220K a week was shoved under the nose of Willian and given that was more than he wanted Chelsea to

tempt him with he understandably signed it, just as soon as he got back on the chair he’d fallen out of. It’s not all rosy at the Emirates, however - if Yo-Pierre does stick around then Alex Lacazette wouldn’t mind being back-up to Joao Felix at Atletico Madrid. That departure could be offset by the arrival of Ajax’s Quincy Promes who could be joined by Gonzalo Higuain if the Gunners choose to completely overlook how utterly terrible he was last time he played in London. If there is a more Mourinho signing than Spurs snapping up Hojbjerg, then I am yet to see it - mind you, the window is open until mid-October. You know the old saying - ‘if you can’t get Sancho then get the player Sancho replaced’? Well, with Borussia Dortmund making it very clear that Jadon is going nowhere no matter what Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves think United have turned their attention to his predecessor Ousmane Dembele, currently failing to put a shift in for Barcelona. Having spent a lot of time ridding the dressing room of overpaid prima donnas with attitude problems, I find it hard to believe OGS is anything to do with this move. Carlo Ancelotti was more patient than I expected, but he has finally decided that Jordan Pickford is actually not that reliable between the sticks and would like to sign a better goalkeeper this summer. He’s also keen on Burnley’s Dwight McNeil, but then so are Leicester, Wolves, AC Milan and, naturally, Juventus. Genuinely, I reckon if you asked Andrea Pirlo to name any Burnley footballer he’d struggle.
