La Siesta murderer out on bail See Main Advert on page 27

Irish-expat Wayne Walsh, aged 32, has been released from prison in Alicante after paying just 3,000€ bail money. Wayne is accused of murdering close friend Carl Carr in September 2018 in a jealous rage over his ex-girlfriend Milly Leonard who is also out on bail. Carr’s

body was found early 2019 in a shallow grave next to the AP7 motorway between Benijofar and Algorfa. It’s alleged that Walsh battered Carr to death in a fit of fury over Milly Lenoard who they both had sexual relationships with. According to police Walsh used a knuckle duster to finish off his love rival in an apartment in La Siesta. Leonard, described as a British model, was arrested alongside Natalie Edwards, a local bar manager for concealing a crime and spent two months in jail before being released on a bail bond of 22,000 euros. Now Walsh has also been released on a lesser bail bond of around 3,000 euros after spending 18 months behind bars, although his freedom hinges on

reporting to court daily. A third female British national was arrested at the time on suspicion of making a false statement and a Spanish man was charged with helping Walsh to dump the body. However, not all the alleged culprits involved in the murder of Carr remain on bail before trial. A judge in Torrevieja has issued a European arrest warrant for another alleged perpetrator in the murder who skipped the country back to Ireland. Simon Fahy, 27 years-old, had been taunting Spanish police from Ireland on social media after the incident but will now be forced to explain his actions and the allegation of covering up a crime. Fahy had previously beaten an extradition order issued as it was rejected by the courts in Ireland.

National government wants Torrevieja treasury The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo of Torrevieja and head of this City Dolón, has announced that the Council, I cannot allow the national government of Pedro Government of Pedro Sánchez to Sanchez will not be allowed to get take this money, which belongs to its hands on the cities all Torrevieja, for the coffers of the considerable treasury. The General State Administration, declaration came hot on the heels because they are the savings from of the announcement that the city has a treasury of 81 million euros of available funds, the largest surplus in the entire Province of Alicante. "We are talking about the money and savings of Torrevieja, which should serve to help the productive sectors (selfemployed, merchants, hoteliers, small companies, etc.) that are having a hard time during this economic crisis," said Eduardo Dolon. Given the recent State of Alarm and on-going economic struggles Spain s experiencing due to the global pandemic, the Eduardo Dolon national government is looking to commandeer the our residents. Especially at a time remaining coffers from all like the one we are experiencing, municipalities. This has caused a time of serious health and consternation at a local level economic crisis.” where local councils believe local The Mayor explained that the money should be used locally. municipal PP group had Eduardo Dolón addesd: “As Mayor presented a motion last week at

the Board of Spokespersons for the Torrevieja City Council to urge the Government of Spain not to appropriate the resources of local entities. The motion was debated and was agreed by the Ciudadanos and VOX parties. The Popular Party presented an alternative in the meeting to the seizure of the municipal funds that its president, Abel Caballero rejected. Eduardo Dolon believes that this situation has arisen because ‘the consistories of our country used their savings and the surplus to face the consequences of COVID-19. Now, the Government of Pedro Sánchez intends that local administrations should pay for his terrible management of the pandemic’. He said: “Handing over the remaining treasury to the Government so that they can return it to the people in the next 15 years is totally inadmissible and would leave the city of Torrevieja stagnant and with no prospects for economic and social progress. We are talking about the money and savings of the residents of Torrevieja, which should serve to help local community through these tough times.”

Orihuela closes beaches at 1am The Orihuela City Council has imposed a curfew on its beaches. Previously, the municipality had not established a time limitation on its beaches, unlike neighbouring Torrevieja. However, the City Council is now going to enforce the closure of the beaches from 1 in the morning until 7 in the morning. The Beaches and Citizen Security departments have decided to adopt this measure, which was made effective recently following the closure of discos and pubs and the limitation of bars and restaurants opening only until 1am. The local government team

were concerned that if the bars closed at 1am, people might be tempted to transfer their nighttime revelry to the beaches. This was a particular concern with young people who will be looking for alterative places to drink, dance and listen to music once everywhere else closes. With the closure of the beaches at night, the Consistory prevents partying on the

beaches and this hopefully will help minimise the spread of Covid across the municipality. The City Council will carry out an information campaign to communicate the measure and the times will be indicated at the entrance points to the beaches. The Local Police will fines those found the areas outside the allowed hours. Local officers have sent an informative circular to all leisure establishments with the regulations established by the Generalitat and will ensure that the closing hours are observed by bars and restaurateurs, and that discos and pubs are closed.

Virus results in 1.35 million job losses More than 1.3 million jobs have been lost across Spain since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. The majority, 1,074,000, were lost in the second quarter of 2020 according to INE, Spain’s official statistics department. This was the biggest quarterly fall in employment in the country since 1976, when the first

official statistics were collated. These figures far outweigh the 770,899 jobs lost in the first three months of 2009, after the global financial crash. There are currently still around 1 million workers claiming pay under the government’s ERTE scheme, which is due to end in September, although it may be

extended. The service sector has been particularly badly hit with 816,000 jobs lost in the second quarter. According to Eurostat, Spain has the highest official unemployment rate in the European Union at 15.6 percent just ahead of Greece at 15.5 percent.

Skin cancer prevention at Orihuela beach The Councillor for Beaches, Ramón López Cabrera, has launched a health station at Cala Bosque, La Zenia under the slogan ‘Playas de Orihuela: a sea of health’. The health station known as ‘Hi Point’ is aimed specifically at the prevention of skin cancer, as well as contributing to the general safety of visitors. This will add an additional facility to the beaches blue flags, Q for quality and Qualitur. The Councillor said: “This device takes another step forward to thinking about next summer as this facility will be available throughout the year, and with this element we intend to offer not only a quality space, but also a health space.” "It is a new unique tool on the Costa Blanca and only the tenth that has been installed in Spain, it is currently found on some beaches such as Figueretes de Ibiza, Andratx or Arrecife in Lanzarote," Councillor López Cabrera explained, adding that "our intention is to install it on an experimental basis and in the coming seasons to add it on our eleven beaches. So for tourists, they know that in addition to having the blue flags, Q for quality and the Qualitur, they also have totally healthy beaches”. The Councillor for Beaches stressed that "we want that safety message not only to be offered through rescue and first aid provision, but for this facility to allow the beaches of Orihuela to be a sea of health". The health station has a ‘sun traffic light’

that measures the intensity of ultraviolet radiation, a defibrillator, a shaded area for rest or breastfeeding, an emergency button connected to 112 and a charging area for battery-powered wheelchairs and for smart-phones. In addition, it also has a digital, interactive and informative touch screen monitor with an integrated camera that tells you what your skin phototype is. This installation also has a screen with which to see all the cultural offerings for Orihuela, including the beaches, districts and the historic centre of the city, and

Thousands demonstrate against Benidorm nightlife closures Saturday saw thousands of people take to the streets of Benidorm to protest against the decision made by the health authorities to restrict nightlife and demand measures to help re-launch the local tourism sector. The city's hotel, leisure and trade associations marched from Avenida de Europa to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento, where they read a manifesto calling for justice for tourism in one of the most popular resorts in Spain. The statement was read jointly by the three main associations - Aico (Independent Association of Merchants of Benidorm and Province), Abreca (Association of bars, restaurants and cafeterias of Benidorm) and Ociobal (Association of leisure venues and discos of Benidorm) - in front of the Town Hall. The event was closed by the President of the Spanish Hospitality Federation, José Luis Yzuel. The manifesto calls for a series of measures in various areas. In employment matters, they have demanded that the ERTEs for workers in the tourism sector be extended until 15th March, 2021 , the business contributions to Social Security for the tourism sectors be subsidised and the application of tourist vouchers that promote internal tourism. The associations demanded that corridors of safe tourist destinations be promoted through "promotional campaigns for the enjoyment of national and international tourism." For this, they consider it "essential" to implement rapid virus tests at airports and stations and that safe destinations be recognised.

In economic terms, they called for non-refundable aid for fixed rental costs for commercial premises, the reduction of VAT for hotel and restaurant services and the renegotiating of the two-year deficiencies in financial operations related to tourist business activity. The representatives of the associations stated that this summer "millions of people" have passed through Benidorm and the contagion rates have been "extraordinarily low", which shows "that things have been done well" and demanded "to be treated accordingly" they said. After the march, which was been carried out with all the relevant security measures, the Mayor of the City, Toni Pérez , met with the representatives of the organising bodies to hear their clams first-hand, in relation to the latest measures dictated by the health authorities. The Mayor praised the organisation of the event and the "exemplary behaviour during the demonstration, which at all times showed “scrupulous respect for health safety and hygiene measures”.

which will also communicate preventive messages from the Spanish Association against Cancer, as well as information on prevention and action on health issues, geo-location of places of interest, a detailed health map and surveys of tourist quality and services. In terms of prevention and protection against Covid-19, it has an antibacterial soap dispenser and a disinfectant mat. This initiative, developed by the company Hi Services, is in collaboration with the Spanish Association Against Cancer, in prevention of skin cancer.

New Covid outbreaks in Orihuela and Algorfa At the start of the weekend the Valencian Community registered 457 new coronavirus infections overnight confirmed by PCR tests, which puts the total number of positives at 19,122 people. There were 120 in the province of Alicante equalling 6,065 in total. Authorities also announced new outbreaks of coronavirus in the Vega Baja at the start of the weekend. The update confirms a new outbreak of contagion in Orihuela with 16 cases of a work origin, while another outbreak in the municipality of Algorfa with 4 infections of a social origin. The Orihuela outbreak is one of the largest registered in the Valencian Community but information on the place of origin has not been provided. This came hot on the heels of Fernando Simon’s “things are not going well” speech. Fernando Simon, the health ministry’s emergencies director, urged social media influencers to help make young people in particular aware of the ongoing danger of contamination. “Nobody should be in any doubt, things are not going well… We cannot let the situation elude us again,” Simon told a press conference, warning of the dangers of a rebound in cases which Spain has seen in recent weeks. Many of the new cases are asymptomatic with the number of hospitalised sufferers as well as fatalities

well down on the spring peaks. Simon stressed the main risk was that hospitals could find themselves overwhelmed with admissions if the number of cases keeps rising. Spain’s counts 130 virus cases per 100,000 people, a much higher level than that of its EU neighbours — the figure for

France being 43 and just 17 in Germany according to an AFP tally based on official data. Spain has regularly been registering between 6,000 and 8,000 cases a day and the past week has seen 122 virus deaths, compared with 12 in the final week of July, for an official total toll of 28,813.

Covidsafe guide for gettogethers Although it is generally recommended that we avoid gatherings of family and friends or house parties during the pandemic, the General Nursing Council has issued some safety guidelines for those who really feel they cannot avoid doing so. Given that nearly half the recent outbreaks of Covid-19 in Spain have been through gatherings of friends and relatives, the focus has been on holding these as safely as possible – since banning them altogether would only be feasible through another lockdown, which the country wants to avoid entirely if it can. “We know everyone's desire to hug each other and make up for lost time is enormous, but right now, we can't afford to undo all our hard work,” stresses chairman of the General Nursing Council, Florentino Pérez Raya. Numbers should be kept as low as is socially possible. Currently 10 is the maximum, but work out how many people can fit in your house or at your dining table without having to get closer than 1.5 metres (about five feet) to anyone they do not live with – this may be lower than ten. Ideally, use an outside space as Covid loves enclosed spaces with lots of people breathing each others air. However, if an outdoor get together isn’t possible then make sure the room you use is well-ventilated by leaving doors and windows open. Set a 'chucking out time' to limit how long you're in each others' company, tell everyone when the curfew is, and stick to it. If anyone in your group knows they have been near someone who is infected, or are experiencing symptoms compatible with Covid-19, don't invite them. They'll understand why. And if it's you with the symptoms, call off your party or, if you're a guest, don't go. Upon arrival If you're the host, make sure you have hand-sanitiser available for everyone to use as they walk in, and tell them to wear masks unless everyone you're seeing lives in the same household. If you're the guest, bring your own hand-sanitiser just in case. Avoid hugging, kissing or any other physical contact, hard though this may be. Perhaps hold hands briefly, then clean them with sanitiser before and afterwards. Catering Only one person should set the table and hand out the food – duly masked and with hands washed –

and avoid buffets. One dish or plate only per person is essential – the typically-Mediterranean custom of all eating off the same large plate of food in the middle of the table has to be shelved for now. Do not share cutlery, for eating or even serving. When you sit down to eat, you'll have to take your mask off, but put it in an envelope or a cloth bag and don't allow it to touch anything or anyone else. Make sure everyone knows which glass, cup, plate, dish and cutlery is theirs – if necessary, put post-it notes on glasses to ensure nobody drinks from someone else's by mistake. Only one person should clear the table afterwards; although it may seem odd, sitting there and letting someone else do all the work, the crucial issue is for as few people as possible to touch things. For shared items such as the salt and pepper, vinegar, olive oil or water jug, use a paper napkin when picking them up, and put this straight in a bin. A small waster paper bin with a liner and a sealed lid next to the table would be ideal. The liner can then be disposed of at the end of the meal. Put your mask back on as soon as you finish eating, and only lift it to take sips of your drink when you're all seated round the table chatting. Even if you all smoke, take it in turns to do so and stand at least two metres away from the table – ideally more – so nobody is near you when you don't have a mask on and the smoke does not reach anyone else. This is because experts believe it is possible for the virus to spread through exhaled droplets. Using the bathroom The General Nursing Council stresses that, now more than ever, it is vital to wash your hands after going to the toilet. It's pretty revolting not to do that anyway, but if you're one of those who

occasionally gets lazy and thinks little of spreading germs all over the door handle and everything else you touch, get out of the habit. All bodily fluids, even microscopic amounts you didn't realise were still on your skin, will pass the virus onto someone else if they are transferred elsewhere – and, even though you may think you haven't caught it, remember that an average of seven in 10 cases detected since lockdown are without symptoms and have only been uncovered through PCRtesting. Also, when using the bathroom, avoid touching surfaces with any part of your body if you can – but don't cover the loo seat with toilet paper before sitting on it, since virologists have confirmed this is actually counter-productive. Toilet seats are smooth and sloping, designed so bacteria can mostly slide off them; tissue, however, traps and absorbs the bacteria and you're more likely to get it on your skin with it than without. If you're the host, disinfect the toilet and sink before and after the party. Leave some sanitiser – make sure it's at least 70% alcohol – and paper towels, with a separate binbag for depositing them in, and ask your guests to disinfect the seat and sink before and after they use the bathroom. Paper towels are also recommended instead of the usual hand towels so it’s not being shared. Make sure your hands are fully dry before leaving the bathroom, since wet hands actually attract more bacteria than unclean dry hands. If in doubt, use hand-sanitiser afterwards, since the alcohol breaks the outer layer of the virus, rendering it ineffective. “We know all this sounds overkill, but it absolutely isn’t. Scientific evidence has shown that using a mask, washing your hands and keeping a physical distance are key in preventing contagion,” Florentino Pérez Raya says.

Save the Children March Torrevieja canine beach petition

Locals took to the streets of Cabo Roig on Saturday to support the global Save the Children March. The event aimed to raise awareness of human trafficking and sexual exploitation of children and saw more than 30 cities across the world join in the initiative. According to reports thousands of children fall victim to evil traffickers each year. The local march was organised by Shauna-Marie Severn. Shauna was raised in foster care and experienced abuse from a young age. Shauna-Marie said: “There is a massive awareness spreading through the world right now for each and every child and adult that was ever used at the hands of their aggressor. This has been such a long time coming and these innocent souls deserve justice and freedom. I decided just two weeks ago that as nothing was being done about it in Spain, I would take it into my own hands and try to organise a group that was passionate about bringing these terrible crimes against humanity to light. Around 20,000 children go missing in Spain every year, this is a global crisis and nobody is talking about it. Our team spread the news through the whole of Cabo Roig, coinciding with many cities across the globe. At around 40 people, we were actually one of the smallest groups of all the marches, but we were able to convince many bars and business owners to come on board and

support our cause.” Shauna-Marie’s group - Freedom for the Children Spain – can be found on Facebook and some of the 550-strong members have recently taken the ‘Operation Underground Railroad’ training course which gives them the knowledge and skills to identify possible trafficking victims. Knowing what to look out for and spotting the subtle signs are vital when tackling this issue.

Garcia Lorca’s summer house for sale A house where iconic poet and playwright Federico García Lorca spent his summer holidays is on sale for €3 million. Owned by Lorca's nieces, the villa in Nerja in Málaga province is more than 100 years old but 'in excellent condition' and 'maintains its original features, antiques, history, and the atmosphere of its time', according to details of the property. It includes a 1,400-squaremetre (about a third of an acre) allotment, is a two-storey building and is around 170 square metres on each floor. With five bedrooms and five bathrooms, Lorca's summer house looks over the Balcón de Europa on one side and over the cliffs to the Maro-Cerro Gordo hillside on the other. The author of now worldfamous plays such as Bodas de Sangre ('Blood Wedding') and La Casa de Bernarda Alba ('The House of Bernarda Alba') spent his summer holidays at the Nerja property in the 1920s and early 1930s – in fact, right up until he was murdered by dictator General Franco's military 84 years ago in 1936, the year the Civil War broke out. Lorca's body was dumped in an unmarked grave, probably along with multiple other victims

Local residents have signed a petition to have the canine beaches of Torrevieja returned to the original locations after it appears that the recently changed Playa para Perros de Torrevieja does not meet dog owners’ approval. The petition already has nearly seven hundred signatures. The residents, who until now had used the beaches set up by the previous local government without suffering any kind of injury to themselves or their animals, are appealing to Mayor Eduardo Dolón after he changed the location of these recreational doggy spaces for one inaccessible and remote beach that owners claim is dangerous for both themselves and their pets. After numerous complaints by local residents, Alba Chazarra, who lives in Torrevieja, experienced the perils of the beach when her dog also suffered injuries on the new beach established by the PP. Spurred to take matters further she set-up the petition to call for

of the regime, and where he is buried is one of Spain's greatest modern mysteries. The Nerja house belongs to Isabel, Gloria and Laura, the daughters of the playwright's brother Francisco García Lorca, after they inherited it from their mum, Federico's sister-in-law

Laura de los Ríos Giner. Laura de los Ríos was the greatniece of Alberto Giner Cossío, a doctor from Vélez-Málaga who moved to Nerja in 1870 and bought up a number of houses – including the one now on sale – in what was then a humble fishermen's neighbourhood.

the previous sites to be restored. The petition alleges that the sites that Eduardo Dolón has set up as "dog beaches" do not have the necessary measures to guarantee the safety of human or canine users. The opposition party Los Verdes is supporting the petition and has already denounced the relocation of the dog beach for the same reasons. A Spokesman said: “We believe that the resolution is nothing more than a decision that shows that the Popular Party does not care about the welfare of animals or their owners, but about satisfying the personal wishes of a few above the needs of citizens and their well-being.” Users says the issues surrounding the new beach are not only of security but also of accessibility of the facility. This they claim is forcing many dog owners to improvise and use better beaches that are not official dog beaches or to travel and use the dog beaches established in other areas, such as Santa Pola.

Yes we all agree, it’s hot outside. But we are in August after all and that means the summer heat isn’t going anywhere just yet. I truly believe you do become acclimatised over time. Have you noticed how you feel the cold more than your family and friends do, when they visit? Now picture this…. You’re feeling the August temperatures and you live here, so imagine how buyers feel visiting from other countries further North. When you’re unable to stand the heat any longer, you can sit in front of the air conditioning unit or go for a cooling dip in the pool. Now how would you feel as a buyer, walking through house after house? You’d want to be in and out of the house as quickly as possible to get back in the car, to the comfort of air conditioning. If your property is on the market during the August heat, you need to make the home as inviting as possible. Buyers will be looking at more than just one home, so you need to encourage them to stay that bit longer in yours. If it’s uncomfortable for them to take an in depth look inside your property, you could risk them being in and out too quick. They’ll never remember what they’ve seen and yours will never make it onto their short list. Here are 3 tips to make your buyers never want to leave:

1. Keeping your shutters down during the day will definitely help keep the heat at bay. But remember to lift them up during a viewing appointment. First impressions count and if your buyers enter your home with all the shutters down, the room will feel uninviting. A light house feels spacious and a dark house feels small. 2. Does your home smell bad? Smelly laundry baskets, teenagers (sorry kids!), pets, bathrooms and kitchens… reach for the Febreze! Buyers can be very quickly turned off by bad smells. Make sure the laundry hampers are clear of any dirty washing. Teenagers rooms are aired. Pets beds and food bowls are clean and hidden away. Cat litter trays are cleaned and out of sight. Bathrooms and kitchens; clean all countertops and tip floor cleaner down the sinks right before a viewing. 3. A cool home is an inviting home. If you have air conditioning units, don’t be afraid to use them. Even if you’re trying to conserve energy, turn them on during all viewing appointments. Your home will feel so comfortable, your buyers will never want to leave! Need help navigating your house hunt online? Daycations are the new thing Anyone who is reluctant to take a holiday this year because of the virus – or cannot afford to – might want to think about going on a 'daycation' instead. Enjoying the pool, the bar, the spa, the restaurants and the terrace for a day at a four- or fivestar hotel, just as if you were a guest, but without having to book a room can come in at an average price of €45, typically less than the cost of booking an overnight stay. The scheme, run by the Spanish start-up Hotelbreak, is proving to be one of the saviours of this summer's tourism industry – although it runs year-round – along with residents in Spain taking 'staycations' instead of going abroad. So far, 150 hotels and resort complexes have signed up with Hotelbreak – in the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Andalucía, Catalunya, and over the border in Lisbon, Portugal. Most of them are based on the coast. Hotelbreak 'daycations' are even possible for those who are already on holiday in the area and staying in much cheaper accommodation, allowing them to take advantage of five-star facilities without paying five-star prices. So you can combine you staycation and daycation in one trip. One example where the scheme is thriving is in Magaluf, the coastal district of Calvià, Mallorca – currently almost

Hotel Innside Calviá Beach

completely deserted and with barely a single British holidaymaker, as a result of the UK's 14-day quarantine requirements for anyone travelling from Spain, including returning tourists – the Hotel Innside Calvià Beach is shut to guests, but its sixth-floor terrace with some of Europe's largest 'hanging' swimming pools remains open. Mallorca residents and visitors from elsewhere in Spain, have been paying to use the terrace and pools and other facilities, such as the bars. Those interviewed say the cleaning, disinfecting, general hygiene and safety measures taken by Hotelbreak hotels is extremely rigorous, making 'daycations' even more secure than being at the beach.

This is because hotels are required by law to follow much stricter health and safety protocol than public areas such as beaches and local pools, or even private pools hired out to individuals and families. Co-founder of Hotelbreak Cristián Alcoba, says: “This year has seen a significant increase in bookings via Hotelbreak – over 30% more – despite fewer hotels being open due to the current situation.” However, if there isn’t a registered Hotelbreak facility near you, all is not lost. With numerous beautiful Four and Five-Star luxury hotels in the Southern Costa Blanca, why not call your favourite and see what facilities they have on offer that you can make the most of this summer.

New changes for bars and restaurants With bars and restaurants just getting back on their feet after the long lock down, the announcement of new national and regional rules directed at the hostelry sector created a huge amount of speculation last week. There were posts on Facebook saying all live entertainment had been cancelled immediately and without notice and even calls to the Town Hall and gestors seemed to give conflicting advice. To clarify exactly what the rules are, particularly around entertainment, the Costa Blanca People contacted the Office of the Chief of Police for the Municipality of Orihuela. It was confirmed that bars that serve food and provide professional entertainment can continue to do so, providing all other rules are adhered to. The entertainer has to be a legal professional, registered as autonomous or with a legal contract to perform specifically at that bar, at that time, and on that day. All paperwork must be on the person for the police to check as requested. The entertainment must end no later than midnight. However, please note that the rules for live entertainment may differ from municipality-to-municipality and the above is only confirmed for Orihuela, including Orihuela Costa. All other national rules must also be adhered to: no-smoking within 2 metres

of any other person, tables of no more than ten people, no dancing at all and all tables must be socially distanced at 1.5m. Bar and restaurant owners should also note that the distance is measured chair back to chair back (when in use) and not table to table. All amateur singing and

dancing including karaoke is prohibited. All bars and restaurants must close at 1am and not accept new customers after midnight. Pubs and drinking bars The new national law also states that any drinking bar ‘bares de copas’, taken as a bar or pub that does not have a kitchen/serve food should close for the 21 day period of the increased measures as should all nightlife facilities such as: discos, nightclubs and cocktail bars. The national law recently introduced states: "En lo que respecta al ocio nocturno,

en la Comunitat Valenciana se suspende la actividad de discotecas, salas de baile, karaoke y bares de copas con y sin actuaciones musicales en directo." When we asked what ‘bares de copas’ were we were told by the Police that these are ‘pubs or drinking bars’ with or without music - defined as not having a kitchen/serving food. However, these rules are open to local interpretation and so it is recommend that you see or speak to your local Town Hall or your gestor to check the status and licensing of your premises. As we understand it a ‘bar de copa’ in Spanish cities and large towns is a place where lots of young people gather pre-clubs to drink and this is why they appear along-side discos and nightclubs to close immediately for 21-days. However, a pub or drinking bar here probably has a different profile. For example you may have terrace seating, you might close at 11pm and your customers could be more middle aged. For this reason, it is recommended that you check your status individually with the relevant authorities to be on the safe side. The new measures came into force in the Valencian Community on Tuesday 18th August and remain in place for 21 days until Monday 7th September.

Flights into Alicante down The Alicante-Elche airport received 10 percent of all international flights to Spain last July, which places it in fourth position as a receiving infrastructure for travellers from other countries. In sum, more than 2.1 million passengers arrived in Spain in July from international airports, which, on the other hand, represents an 80 percent drop compared to the same month of the previous year, according to data released

by Turespaña , dependent on the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism. This is the fifth consecutive month of decreases that show the consequences of the coronavirus crisis in the arrivals of international flights to Spain. "Despite the fact that covid-19 continues to affect the arrival of international tourists, these data reflect that Spain continues to be a destination sought and chosen by the main issuing markets," said the Secretary of State for Tourism, Fernando Valdés , who considers "crucial a greater coordination at European level to avoid new restrictions to the trips". The majority of international travellers used a low-cost airline, 61.1% compared to those who flew with traditional airlines (38.9 percent). At El Altet airport, the four airlines that move the most passengers are of this type. International passenger traffic of low-cost companies registered a year-on-year decrease of 72.7 percent, while traditional companies had a lower reduction (-69.6 percent)

From January to July, travellers arriving in Spain from international airports amounted to 15.5 million, 71.4 percent less when compared to the same period of the previous year. By source markets, almost half of the international travellers arriving in Spain (923,593) came from Germany (23.6 percent) and the United Kingdom (20.3 percent), followed by countries in the Schengen area such as the Netherlands (9 percent) , France (8.5 percent), Italy (7.5 percent), Belgium (6.1 percent), Switzerland (5.3 percent), Poland (2.7 percent), Ireland (1.8 percent) and Sweden (1.7 percent). The Balearic Islands was the autonomous community with the most arrivals (29.6 percent of the total), followed by Andalusia (15.5 percent), Valencian Community (14.5 percent), Catalonia (13.5 percent), Community of Madrid (13 percent ) and the Canary Islands (11.4 percent). Therefore, seven out of ten international travellers who arrived in Spain in July did so in one of these six autonomous communities. Palma de Mallorca airport was the one that received the most international passengers (21.6 percent of the total), followed by Adolfo Suárez-Madrid Barajas (13 percent), Malaga (12.9 percent), Barcelona (12.1 percent), Alicante (10 percent), Ibiza (6.1 percent), Valencia (4.5 percent), Tenerife South (4.3 percent), Fuerteventura (2.5 percent) and Gran Canaria (2.5 percent). According to Turespaña, the month of July has been the fifth consecutive month in which the consequences of the crisis caused by covid-19 have shown in the arrivals of international flights bound for Spain.

During the State of Alarm and at the height of the pandemic the village registered just three infections. The new outbreak has been described as alarming

by the Head of the Civil Protection Malen Crespi, and he is asking locals to remain on their guard in order to halt the spread of the virus. The order for the bleach cleaning came from Santa Maria Town Council and will see all of the streets and street furniture sprayed with virus fighting anti-bacterial solution.

Safety of ministers causes concern The government is taking the ongoing harassment that is being suffered by Unidas Podemos politicians Pablo Iglesias and Irene Montero very seriously, considering it not to be an isolated incident but rather the result of a political climate that is being fanned by the far right. The executive is opting to increase the security measures outside the Madrid home of the deputy prime minister and his partner, who is the equality minister in the coalition government, and is preparing for a potential worsening of the situation this coming autumn. The situation is under control, according to government sources, but the level of harassment that is being registered is “worrying,” they add. As well as the Iglesias family, who have three children under the age of three, other ministers from the Socialist Party (PSOE)-led coalition government are also being targeted, and an atmosphere of hatred is prevailing in far-right groups and on social media. In fact, the majority of ministers changed their usual habits this summer, and are avoiding public areas. No one, however, has been subject to the kind of harassment that Iglesias and Montero have, with daily noisy protests outside their house in the Madrid municipality of Galapagar, and the online revelation of where they were vacationing in Asturias, which forced them to cut short their holiday recently due to fears for the safety of their children.

The protests that are taking place outside the Iglesias family residence are difficult to tackle, government sources explain. The house is in an open development, with no barriers to entry in the area. Given that it isn’t an apartment, nor in a closed estate, it is very difficult to control who comes in and out. The group of demonstrators who bang pots and pans and use megaphones to disturb the family, and to demand that they leave Spain, has an easy job of accessing the area. The Civil Guard has tried to restrict access to the street where the house is located, and sometimes requests the identification of those who turn up to protest and hurl insults. But government sources explain that it’s hard to stop people coming through, given that neighbouring residents are complaining that they are being prevented from reaching their own homes. Civil Guard officers have made statements to the courts about what is happening, while Iglesias and Montero themselves have filed reports against specific demonstrators who turn up every day, among them a councillor for the far-right Vox party in the Galapagar local council. But so far the judge in charge has rejected all of their complaints, which has left the authorities with little room for manoeuvre. In the wake of the couple cutting short their vacation, measures have been stepped up, and the Civil Guard

were much stricter about who could approach the property. “When they came back to Galapagar, it was as if they were waiting for them, because they found out about it quickly and they started to harass them again,” Unidas Podemos sources explain. Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos, of the PSOE, has also been targeted by the far right in his home. This August, most

Spanish brand scoops best beer award The Best beer in the world is Spanish – it's official. This year's World Beer Challenge Awards have been given out and, although they will not be published until September, the Galicia-based brewery Hijos de Rivera has already offered a spoiler. Their own 1906 brand – the premium label of the company Estrella Galicia – has swept the board, netting the maximum of 100 points and gold medals for

three different versions. The 1906 Special Reserve, the 1906 Red Vintage, and the black lager 1906 Black Coupage all achieved the highest number of points available and went home with gold medals, commemorative highresolution labels for their bottles, and will get a full profile on the World Beer Awards site. These awards, which take place in the UK, are granted

based upon the opinions of 67 judges, 19 of whom are women, 44 of whom are British and the rest of whom come from Brazil, Canada, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Australia, Hong Kong, the Czech Republic, China, and Spain (Catalunya). Last year, Cervezas Vandalia's Alazán Pale Ale won World's Best English-Style Pale Ale, and Voll-Damm's Oktoberfestbier/Maerzen won World's Best Lager (Seasonal).

Spain marks third anniversary of deadly attacks A ceremony has been held in Barcelona in memory of the 16 people who died during attacks in the Spanish city and a nearby resort three years ago. Wearing face masks and maintaining social distance because of the pandemic, dozens of relatives of the victims laid white carnations on the famous Las Ramblas boulevard where on 17th August, 2017 a van mowed down pedestrians leaving behind a trail of bodies. Health Minister Salvador Illa and the president of the regional government of Catalonia, Quim Torra, were also in attendance. Claimed by the Islamic State

group, the attacks were carried out by a cell made up mostly of young people of Moroccan descent who grew up in Catalonia. Younes Abouyaaqoub drove the van down Las Ramblas at high speed before fleeing in a car he stole after killing the driver. Abouyaaqoub, 22, was shot dead by police four days later. Several hours after the attack, five of his accomplices drove into more pedestrians and stabbed a woman who later died of her injuries in Cambrils, a seaside resort 100 kilometres (60 miles) to the south. All five were shot dead by police.

Spanish prosecutors are seeking prison terms of up to 41 years for three men over their involvement in the 2017 attacks, which also injured 140 people. The cell had been planning attacks on a grand scale involving explosives, with sites such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the stadiums of Barcelona and Real Madrid football clubs among alleged targets. But the accidental explosion of its arsenal in Spain - which killed the suspected leader of the cell - pushed the group to hurriedly improvise the two attacks in Catalonia.

members of the government have opted for peaceful areas for their vacations or have decided not to go away at all, remaining in their homes. The situation in the coming autumn may be even more complicated, the Interior Ministry is predicting. The political climate is likely to become even more intense, given that Vox has filed a motion of no confidence against PSOE Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez – albeit one that is doomed to failure, due to the current lack of support

for it from other parties in Congress. The current situation, however, is highly unusual, and the far right has not presented a problem such as this one for many years. Sources from the Interior Ministry insist, however, that the situation is under control and that the security forces have plans for all types of scenarios. It is also engaged in intense intelligence work, in order to keep tabs on any movements by extremist groups that could cause problems.

The forgotten coast This week, the Costa Blanca People was contacted by Peter Houghton, President, Partido Independencia Orihuela Costa (PIOC). The party believes that Orihuela Costa is disintegrating before our very eyes and lays the blame at the feet of the Mayor Emilio Bascunana, the Councillor for Cleaning, Damasco Aparicio and the Councillor for Infrastructure, Angel Noguera Garcia. The party believes that treatment by the local government team is biased towards the city and lists a number of failings such as the missing footbridge, which was promised but never delivered and the Cultural Centre. Mr Houghton said: “The local government has the €40,000 for the feasibility study and around €2,000,000 to build the Cultural Centre. However, we believe that is not in the Mayors interest, as that would be a focal point where possibly Groups and Associations would meet and become more unified. The promise earlier this month of a Civic Centre for all ages and nationalities including a Mother & Toddler Group and a Youth Club would be ideal, but will this promise be kept? The Party claims that every

town in Spain has one has a Cultural Centre, which includes a library and auditorium for drama, music, entertainment and believes that residents on the coast should have access to this kind of facility as have all Spanish Citizens. Orihuela Costa contributes heftily to the municipal coffers, 49 percent of total revenue comes from the coast. In monetary terms roughly €45-50,000,000 a year, but PIOC believes that what its residents get back from the budget puts them at the bottom of spending per person. Since lockdown ended there has been a real backlash regarding the decline of cleaning services. PIOC says there is still a considerable shortage of bins, including recycling containers across the coast. There is distinct lack of signage dictating when residents can put rubbish out and who to phone to remove large items. The Party is also calling for Eco parks around Orihuela Costa for

builders and garden maintenance contractors etc., to dispose of waste, instead of dumping it outside residential homes. In terms of infrastructure, Peter said: “The roads are disintegrating because of the lack of planned preventative maintenance. There is, or was, a budget of 3.3 million for potholes, surely they could not have spent it already? The amount of damaged tyres we are getting reports of is unforgivable and now the government wants to build more properties here on the coast when we have a glut of empty properties already. These so called Councillors and our Mayor can’t control what we have now, they just view it as extra revenue for them to plunder.” PIOC is calling on local residents to prepare for the next local elections on 28th May 2023 and to focus on becoming Independent.

Woman found dead in Dolores The body of a woman, thought to be of Lithuanian origin, was found in a house in Dolores recently. The body showed clear signs of decomposition and it is believed, even though the results of the autopsy have not been confirmed, it is believed that her passing was not the result of a violent crime.

The Judicial Police of the Civil Guard is continuing to investigate the circumstances in which the death of 55 years old, VU, took place. The lifeless body was found on Thursday, around 6.30pm, in the house where she lived, located on the second floor of number 1 Blasco Ibáñez Street, after

neighbours reported a bad smell coming from the home. Local Police agents travelled to the scene and, after entering the house, they found the deceased woman at the end of the corridor and with clear symptoms of decomposition, due to which they notified the Civil Guard, which has taken over the case.

WHO says travel restrictions to Spain due to poor outbreak management The World Health Organisation (WHO) has put the spotlight on the management of new coronavirus outbreaks in Spain as the reason travel restrictions have been implemented by dozens of governments. Countries are putting them in place due to a lack of information, said the WHO’s Bruce Aylward in Geneva recently, which means that they “are not able to manage the risks, and they are not able to understand the risks.” Asked specifically about the WHO’s assessment of the travel restrictions placed by other countries on Spain and some of its regions, as well as the quarantines being enforced on travellers arriving from Spanish territory, the Canadian epidemiologist, who is leading the WHO-China Joint Mission on Covid-19, reiterated the messages voiced by the organisation in recent months. “Our position is the following: you need to know who is infected with this disease, you need to ensure those people are isolated, and you need to ensure their contacts are identified and quarantined.” It is this information that the countries that are enforcing these restrictions are missing, Aylward continued. “We need to reach a

situation where we can carry out the tests and isolate people so that they can’t infect others and also isolate their contacts. At that moment the virus will not be able to travel,” he explained. Aylward also pointed to the importance of strictly following “basic public health measures.” “When you have a flare, the first

thing you need to do is test, isolate, trace the contacts, make sure those folk aren’t moving – that’s why we quarantine, and that’s why we isolate them. And then virus transmission stops,” he explained. “We need to return to the fundamentals of the management of the disease,” he added. The comments came after more than a hundred states imposed

some kind of controls on the circulation of travellers either into or out of Spain, according to figures from the Spanish Foreign Ministry. In some cases, however, the measures have been in place for several months. The highestprofile restrictions, such as those imposed by the United Kingdom, have meant a severe blow for Spain’s key tourism industry. The WHO official’s comments came on the same day that the European Centre for Disease Protection and Control (ECDC) placed Spain at the top of the list of countries on the continent with the highest infection rate in the last two weeks in relation to its population. Spain has now overtaken Luxembourg and has registered 132.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. It is currently the only country with a figure exceeding 100, followed by Luxembourg (98.6), Romania (88.5) and Belgium (60.8). The figure for the remaining European countries is below 50. This data is influenced, however, by the number of tests being carried out by each country, and offering a national average can disguise major regional differences on the domestic level.

Guardia Civil helps two foreign children lost in Almoradi Officers of the Guardia Civil helped two children aged 11 and 4 years of age, who were lost on a road in Almoradí. It is believed that the youngsters drifted away while playing in a park near to the house of relatives where they were staying on holiday. As the children did not speak Spanish, the officers decided to stop several drivers until one could act as an interpreter, to find out what was wrong with them and why they were wondering the streets. The officers put them in their police car and drove around the local area, trying to spot places that they recognised, until they found their family. The events took place around 7:00pm on a Saturday evening when two officers from the Headquarters of the Civil Guard of Almoradí were surprised to see two children, an 11-year-old girl and a four-year-old boy, running along the CV-912 regional road which links the towns of Almoradí and Rafal. When they stopped to ask if the pair needed help, the children, between sobs, tried to explain their situation, but they only spoke Arabic, so it was impossible for the officers to understand what their

situation was. The patrol decided to stop all the vehicles that passed on that road, until they found someone who spoke the same language. One of the drivers was able to act as an interpreter and explained that the minors had gotten lost while playing in a park near the house of some relatives. The problem was that they were completely unaware of

where that house was, because they had only arrived there on holiday a few days ago. With this information, the Civil Guard officers decided to drive around with the children to see if anything looked familiar. A short time later, in the district of El Saladar, they found a large group of people combing the are4a. These turned out to be the children’s relatives, who were out looking for them.

My ex wants me to attend his wedding My husband left me nine months ago for another woman, after 26 years of marriage. He said he had fallen in love with a woman who had recently joined his firm. For the first few weeks I was devastated and in shock, and once took over the counter painkillers. My family is not aware of this but my friend found me - I hadn't taken enough to end my life. We have three grown children so I decided to keep a good relationship with my husband, but they took very well to the new woman, which hurt immensely. I have never spoken to them about how difficult this was to witness, but chose to bear it all in silence; I didn't even show any hurt over the split itself. If I am honest, I am still in love with him and think about him 24 hours a day. Now he plans to marry this woman, and he wants me to attend the wedding. My children want me to go. I know we will never get back together, but seeing him get married to someone else will tear me apart. For the sake of your children you have battled to overcome your devastation and are friendly towards your ex-husband. Your ex is glad because it makes him feel less guilty. He, and your family believe that you have accepted the situation, but you haven't. To expect you to watch him marry another woman is completely insensitive. Because you have tried to be brave for the children’s sake, they don’t realise how devastated you still feel. So explain this to them and say that although you are happy to keep an amicable relationship with your ex, you could not cope with going to the wedding. If this were me, I would distance myself from my ex husband now. Your children are grown, so you don't have to keep up appearances. Keeping your ex in your life means you will never get over losing him. It's time to broaden your horizons and leave your ex husband behind you, as he has done. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. Virtual Tomatina The world’s biggest tomato fight was supposed to be celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2020, but like practically all fiestas this year, has been called off due to the pandemic. However, Buñol town council is calling for fans of the festival all over the world to take part in the #TomatinaChallenge – videoing themselves being hit by ripe tomatoes or hurling tomato juice over themselves, uploading the footage on social media, and emailing it to: prensa@latomatina.info. All entries will be placed into a draw and the first 10 chosen will earn their ‘filmakers’ two tickets each for next year's Tomatina, and 10 commemorative mugs. Safety and avoiding destruction of other people's, or public, property is paramount: If you take videos of yourself chucking tomatoes at people on the street, you'll probably be fined, and so you should be; mask-wearing, social distancing and stringent hygiene measures mean it is more crucial than ever to avoid pulling a Tomatina-style stunt in public. But a tomatoey version of the 'icebucket challenge' on your own terrace or garden could work instead. It does not have to be messy, though, say the organisers: dressing up the kids in tomato costumes, filming your tomato plants or

tomato-based lunch might also fit the bill. Videos should be horizontal, or landscape, rather than vertical or portrait, since they need to be uniform – the council wants to put them all together to make a full-length, commemorative 75th anniversary 'documentary'. Buñol, a town of approximately 11,000 inhabitants around 20 kilometres west of Valencia off the A-3 Madrid motorway, is famous on every continent for its mucky festival, which is believed to have started after a group of youths at the weekly fruitand-veg market became bored and started hurling tomatoes at each other. In recent years, tickets carrying a small charge have been issued with a limit on numbers, since the festival was becoming so famous and widely-supported that there simply was not room for everyone who wanted to travel over to Spain for precisely that reason. The town's population typically doubles or trebles on the last Wednesday in August, when the Tomatina is celebrated, with up to 90 percnet of residents joining in and the others coming from as far away as Australia and Japan. In fact, the Tomatina is so huge that it has its own councillor. María Vallés is the current 'councillor for Tomatina affairs' and is running this year's 'virtual version'

and competition. She fervently hopes next year's will be able to go ahead as usual. Anyone already planning to make their Tomatina début in 2021 should remember to set aside clothing they will

never wear again – you won't get the stains out, no matter how hard you try – and goggles are also a good idea, even though throwing tomatoes at faces or heads, or pulling at others' garments, is not allowed. Showers are on site to clean off the

worst of the typical 145 tonnes of overripe tomatoes unloaded into the central square at 11am on the dot – and, miraculously, thanks to dedicated street cleaners, every last drop of the planet's largest open-air bowl of gazpacho has been hoovered up or washed away by the following day.

Backtoschool meeting Ministers for health and education have planned a meeting to discuss strategy before kids in Spain go back to school. Classes begin on different dates in different regions, with some of the earliest new term starts being from Friday, 4th September. Isabel Celaá (education) and Salvador Illa (health), along with minister for territorial policy Carolina Darias will design a full procedure which will take on board feedback from the regional governments in order to prevent contagion in the classroom. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says if 'community transfer' of the virus – the number of people a person testing positive infects – remains low, children should be safe at school, although one of the ideas being floated by the national government is for pupils to have a 50-50 split between online and in-person lessons. The procedure agreed will need to be followed in all regions, and could include measures such as compulsory masks for all pupils aged six and over. Other ideas include children taking class in 'shifts' – one group in the morning and one in the afternoon. It is likely Spain will consider some of the measures put in place in Italy by education minister Lucia Azzolina, which are set to involve staggered starting and

finishing times, separate entry and exit doors with pupils coming in and going out monitored by teachers, redesigning classrooms to keep children at least a metre apart from each other, and regular, scheduled disinfecting and cleaning of all areas and equipment, plus a 'counselling desk' to help deal with issues such as stress, fear, anxiety, isolation, and difficulty in concentrating. In Italy, anyone – staff or pupils – with a temperature of over 37.5ºC or any other symptoms compatible with Covid-19 will be automatically sent home and not allowed back until they have been PCRtested and show up negative.

nationwide continue to be asymptomatic, with a higher proportion among the 20 to 49 age bracket. This may mean some towns are able to allow children to go back to normal classroom life – with precautions – whilst others may be recommended to continue with online tutoring at home.

The WHO warns that allowing school to restart as normal in areas with high numbers of contagion would be disastrous, but in Spain, many regions have few cases and others have reported numerous outbreaks; within each region, even those with a high percentage of Coronavirus positives – such as Madrid, Catalunya, Aragón, Navarra and the Basque Country – have several towns with few or no cases at all.

So far, Isabel Celaá has said that if schools do go back, it is likely children will still be able to go out into the playground at breaktimes, but in reduced groups and at staggered times, with kids in the same families or households kept together.

At present, one in three Covid-19 positives is in Madrid, and the majority

The aim is to keep class groups or year groups from mixing too much with each other, so that if a child is diagnosed, contacts are reduced and any possible spread contained.

September – an approach by the rightwing regional government that has led to teachers threatening to go on strike and one of the country's main unions, the CCOO (Labourers' Commissions) announcing legal action – other regions are more cautious and prefer to keep them at home. Sra Celaá believes that children returning to school is the most desirable outcome, but only if stringent safety measures are in place. The Comunidad Valenciana is considering that, on days when the weather makes it unsafe or uncomfortable for children to go outside at breaktimes, they should stay in the last classroom they used and be supervised by the teacher who taught them immediately before the bell, with windows opened where possible to ensure the building is properly ventilated.

All items you wish to sell must be brought in to the auction the week before they go on sale, along with a list of no more than 15 items, with added reserves, name and telephone number. The items will be safely locked away till the next auction the following week. Sellers will be given a number and this will be their place in the next auction. Masks must be worn at all times and refusal to do so will result in nonadmittance to the auction. In addition, due to the restrictions on bars and restaurants, it is recommended to reserve a table no later than three days before the auction, to make sure you get a seat. Facebook fuelled coronavirus misinformation Websites spreading misinformation about health attracted nearly half a billion views on Facebook in April alone, as the coronavirus pandemic escalated worldwide, a report has found. Facebook had promised to crack down on conspiracy theories and inaccurate news early in the pandemic. But as its executives promised accountability, its algorithm appears to have fuelled traffic to a network of sites sharing dangerous false news, campaign group Avaaz has found.

False medical information can be deadly; researchers at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical medicine have directly linked a single piece of false information to 800 coronavirus deaths. Pages from the top 10 sites peddling inaccurate information and conspiracy theories about health received almost four times as many views on Facebook as the top 10 reputable sites for health information, Avaaz warned in a report. The report focused on Facebook pages

and websites that shared large numbers of false claims about coronavirus. The pages and sites covered a variety of different backgrounds, including alternative medicine, organic farming, far-right politics and generalised conspiracies. It found that global networks of 82 sites spreading health misinformation over at least five countries had generated an estimated 3.8bn views on Facebook over the last year. Their audience peaked in April, with 460m views in a single month.

“This suggests that just when citizens needed credible health information the most, and while Facebook was trying to proactively raise the profile of authoritative health institutions on the platform, its algorithm was potentially undermining these efforts,” the report said. A relatively small but influential network is responsible for driving huge amounts of traffic to health misinformation sites. Avaaz identified 42 “super-spreader” sites that had 28m followers generating an estimated

800m views. A single article, which falsely claimed that the American Medical Association was encouraging doctors and hospitals to overestimate deaths from Covid-19, was seen 160m times. This vast collective reach suggested that Facebook’s own internal systems are not capable of protecting users from misinformation about health, even at a critical time when the company has promised to keep users “safe and informed”.

This Week´s Movie Picks Logan

The Legend of Tarzan

Saturday 29th August – Channel 4, 10.00 pm

Sunday 30th August – ITV2, 7.50 pm

In 2029 the mutant population has shrunken significantly due to genetically modified plants designed to reduce mutant powers and the X-Men have disbanded. Logan, whose power to selfheal is dwindling, has surrendered himself to alcohol and now earns a living as a chauffeur. He takes care of the ailing old Professor X whom he keeps hidden away. One day, a female stranger asks Logan to drive a girl named Laura to the Canadian border. At first he refuses, but the Professor has been waiting for a long time for her to appear. Laura possesses an extraordinary fighting prowess and is in many ways like Wolverine. She is pursued by sinister figures working for a powerful corporation; this is because they made her, with Logan's DNA. A decrepit Logan is forced to ask himself if he can or even wants to put his remaining powers to good use. It would appear that in the near-future, the times in which they were able put the world to rights with razor sharp claws and telepathic powers are now over.

Katie Price 'loses half a stone in five days' after surgery on feet Katie Price has allegedly lost a whopping half a stone in just five days as she's been "in so much pain she can't eat". The 42 year old, whose pink Barbie car was recently "returned to her" after it was "left with her ex Kris Boyson's dad", endured a gruelling six hour operation on 14th August after breaking her two feet in a freak accident in the south of Turkey. Katie has been in "agony" ever since, with a source explaining that the pain is so horrific that she's stopped eating. Katie's on all these pain medications but she just can't sleep she's in so much pain," the insider said. "She's gone off her food, which is unlike her, and has lost half a stone since the operation. She was already tiny, so everyone's trying to tempt her into eating again as she can't lose much more." Britney Spears wants her dad out of the picture Britney Spears wants her father to be removed as the person that controls her

business and personal affairs in a major change to her 12-year court-appointed conservatorship. Ahead of a court hearing in Los Angeles, the 38-year-old pop star's lawyer filed documents saying the singer is "strongly opposed to having James (Spears) return as conservator of her person." The document gave no reasons for her stance. Jamie Spears was appointed conservator in 2008 after the pop star's life spiraled out of control and she was hospitalized for psychiatric treatment. The fans greeted news of her request to oust her father as a victory and plan a demonstration outside the downtown Los Angeles courthouse. Harry Redknapp on the move Harry Redknapp watched on as a fleet of removal men moved him and wife Sandra out of their 'Millionaires Row' mansion in Dorset. The hubbub of activity at the fourstorey property in plush Sandbanks appeared to confirm that the football manager, 73, is indeed selling the £7 million pad - having only been rumoured previously.

Following his parents' death in Africa, John Clayton has been be raised by an ape, was known by the name Tarzan, but eventually left Africa and for his parents' home in England, along with the woman he fell in love with and married, Jane Porter. He is asked by Belgian King Leopold to go to Africa to see what he has done there to help the country. Initially, he refuses. But an American, George Washington Williams, wants him to accept so he can accompany him. He says that Leopold might be committing all sorts of atrocities to achieve his goal, like slavery. Clayton agrees and his wife insists that she accompany him because she misses Africa. When they arrive, a man named Rom, who works for Leopold, attacks their village and captures Tarzan and Jane. With Washington's help he escapes and sets out to rescue Jane by going across the jungle. Washington joins him despite being told that he might not make it.

Harry and Sandra, 73, have lived in the area for 20 years - and appear on Celebrity Gogglebox together from their glass-panelled home. But this is set to change, as the couple - who are the parents of football hunk Jamie Redknapp - are reportedly moving to a smaller property close by worth £3.8 million. Kate Garraway judged over job KATE Garraway has revealed she suffered "abuse" about returning to work on Good Morning Britain while her sick husband remains in intensive care. The 53-year-old presenter said people judged her for "laughing and joking" amid her tragic circumstances. Kate opened up about her own personal experience ahead of interviewing paramedic Laura Heath who was trolled for posting a glamorous selfie during the coronavirus crisis. Mum-of-two Kate said: "We've talked about this, with me doing this show, if we're having a laugh and joke - because that's our job in the morning to cheer everybody - people then say does that mean you're not worried about Derek or you're not feeling sad about. "They see her posting and posing when she should be saving lives, not really understanding we're all human and the most important thing is we have to laugh and smile. She added: "Nothing warrants abuse."

Sanitiser wristband invented in Spain Carrying hand-sanitiser around with you and groping for it in your handbag whenever you need it can be cumbersome, but there's an easier way: Cleands, a biodegradable, hypoallergenic wristband filled with alcohol gel that you just press once. The capsule inside is easily refilled, and each press gives exactly the right dose for an adult pair of hands, dispensing it onto your hands without squirting it everywhere, and then all you need to do is rub it in for 15 seconds. A full capsule carries enough hand-sanitiser for up to 25 'cleans'. Similar in appearance to a basic Swatch watch and coming in several colours – black, white, yellow and pastel shades of blue, pink and grey – Cleands wristbands are the brainchild of a group of young adults in Spain who intend to donate part of the proceeds from each sale to various charities battling the Covid-19 pandemic. The dispenser valve is one-way only, so the alcohol gel does not get 'sucked' back in, and is very accurately-dosed to avoid waste. All the wearer has to do is remember to refill it – using handsanitiser comprising at least 70 percent to 90 percent alcohol and

with an anti-virus effect, available from pharmacies or supermarkets. When they eventually get worn out and need to be replaced, they will not clog up landfill sites, as they are completely biodegradable, meaning they break down and totally disappear over time. Each wristband costs just €13.75, and you can even buy Cleands-branded anti-virus handsanitiser to refill it, at €7 for 250ml or €9 for 400ml, with added aloe vera to keep skin soft, protected and moisturised. The Cleands team is attempting to roll them out to as

many pharmacies nationwide as possible, although they are not yet widely available outside of large towns or cities. Eventually, they hope to have them on sale in almost every chemist's nationwide.

Finally Great British Bake Off is heading our way Great British Bake Off fans, have no fear: 2020 might have been a car crash, but we’re still getting a new series of GBBO. That’s right – Bake Off is back! Recently CEO of Sky Studios (who owns Productions) Love confirmed in a press conference. In fact, Commercial Chief Officer, Jane Millichip, said that production has actually been filming for the past two weeks. And now our favourite baking show ever has revealed it could be back sooner than we think, because they've officially wrapped filming! In a cryptic tweet the show said: "Filming has wrapped on the new series of The Great British Bake Off. More news soon... ilming has wrapped on the new series of The Great British Bake Off. soon... news More pic.twitter.com/tyDllxJGSv Off Bake British — (@BritishBakeOff) August 19, 2020Matt Lucas – who's taking over from Sandi Toksvig), judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith and the whole crew were in quarantine for a few weeks before

filming to make sure that nothing comes between the world and an 11 series of Bake Off. Earlier this year the decision was made to delay filming, when production usually gets under way for Bake Off’s usual start date of late August. So, here's everything we know so far about the eleventh series of GBBO - including a potential start date, and whether it will actually be on at all thanks to all this lockdown business. More on that in a bit... How to apply for The Great British

Bake Off? I'm afraid to say applications are now closed for Bake Off 2020, obviously. But how about getting plenty of baking practice in and applying for 2021? When does The Great British Bake Off 2020 start? Usually, filming takes place from April in time for the first show to air in late August: but for obvious reasons, that didn't happen this year. However, big bosses at Sky Studios did hint that series 11 will be on our screens by the end of the year...

Older people who take daily multivitamin and mineral supplements are able to recover quicker from illnesses, according to a new study. Researchers from Oregon State University discovered that vitamin tablets which contain zinc and high amounts of vitamin C were sick for shorter periods, and experienced less severe symptoms, compared to those who did not take the supplements. Scientists analysed data from more than 40 participants, aged from 55 to 75, and looked at the levels of zinc and vitamins C and D – important for immune function – in the bloodstream. The supplement contained 700 micrograms (mcg) of vitamin A; 400 international units (IU) of vitamin D; 45 milligrams (mg) of vitamin E; 6.6mg of vitamin B6; 400mcg of folate; 9.6mcg of vitamin B12; 1,000mg of vitamin C; 5mg of iron; 0.9mg of copper; 10mg of zinc; and 110mcg of selenium. Those taking the multivitamin over the

12-week study showed improved vitamin C and zinc levels in the blood and reported less severe illness symptoms. Days of sickness averaged three days, compared to more than six in the group who were taking a placebo. Professor Adrian Gombart said while the differences were "striking", it highlighted just how many older people are lacking in nutrients that could help them recover from illnesses much quicker. "Since multiple nutrients support immune function, older adults often benefit from multivitamin and mineral supplements. These are readily available, inexpensive and generally regarded as safe," he explained. "Our results suggest more and better designed research studies are needed to explore the positive role multivitamin and mineral supplementation might play in bolstering the immune system of older adults."

Weight training is ridiculously good For many, weight training calls to mind bodybuilders pumping iron in pursuit of beefy biceps and bulging pecs. But experts say it’s well past time to discard those antiquated notions of what resistance training can do for your physique and health. Modern exercise science shows that working with weights - whether that weight is a light dumbbell or your own body - may be the best exercise for lifelong physical function and fitness. Many people think of weight training as exercise that augments muscle size and strength, which is certainly true. But the “load” that this form of training puts on bones and their supporting muscles, tendons and ligaments is probably a crucial when it comes to health and physical function. Experts talk about bone resorption, which is a decrease in bone tissue over time. When you’re young, bone resorption is balanced and in some cases exceeded by new bone tissue generation. But later in life, bone tissue losses accelerate and outpace the creation of new bone. That acceleration

SALE

is especially pronounced among people who are sedentary and women who have reached or passed menopause. This loss of bone tissue leads to the weakness and postural problems that plague many older adults. Resistance training counteracts all those bone losses and postural deficits. Through a process known as bone remodelling, strength training stimulates the development of bone osteoblasts: cells that build bones back up. While you can achieve some of these bone benefits through aerobic exercise, especially in your lower body, resistance training is really the best way to maintain and enhance total-body bone strength. During a bout of resistance training, your muscles are rapidly using glucose, and this energy consumption continues even after you’ve finished exercising. So, for anyone at risk for metabolic conditions - type-2 diabetes, but also high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol levels and other symptoms of metabolic syndrome - strength training is among the most-effective remedies. Strength training also seems to be a potent antidote to inflammation, a major risk factor for heart disease and other conditions. A 2010 study from the University of Connecticut linked regular resistance training with inflammationquelling shifts in the body’s levels of cytokines, a type of immune system protein. Another study from Mayo Clinic found that when overweight women did twice-weekly resistance training sessions, they had significant drops in several markers of inflammation. More research has linked strength training to improved focus and cognitive function, better balance, less anxiety and greater well-being.

How often should you shower How often you shower typically falls into one of two (extreme) camps: every day without fail or as little as possible (isn't that why wipes and dry shampoo were invented?). But according to dermatologists, there’s actually a right and a wrong number of times to shower each week. And a good general guideline is once a day or once every other day. However, even that recommendation might vary depending on your workout habits or where you live. Take the three things below into consideration to determine your own personal shower quota. Your activity level There are a growing number of on-the-go products you can stash in your gym bag that let you leave the gym smelling fresh without a shower. While these can be huge time-savers, if you’ve really been sweating, you probably want to grab a towel and head to the locker room to rinse off. We shower to remove oil, skin cells, sweat, bacteria, and dirt. When all that builds up on your skin, it can lead to anything from pimples to bacterial or fungal infections. For people who are particularly prone to acne, showering right after exercise can help ward off a breakout by clearing out pores which is especially important if you work out in makeup.

Your skin type For those with oily skin stick with the once-a-day rule, but if you have sensitive or very dry skin, shower no more than a couple times a week to reduce dryness, itching, and inflammation. If you have dry skin and work out regularly, use a gentle soap and applying moisturizer after you shower. And don’t forget that your skin type may change as you age. As people get older, they generally tend to make less oil and may have skin troubles if they bathe more than several times a week. Your environment If you live in a hot, humid

environment, you’re going to want to shower every day to minimise the bacterial build-up (and smell) on your skin. If it's cooler outside by you, you can get away with showering less. If you notice your skin is dried out, scaling, or itching more than usual, consider showering less and cutting down on scrubs and exfoliants. Simply using your hand or a washcloth and body soap is best. Showering correctly is more important than showering often or saving time with dry shampoo. That means using lukewarm (not hot) water, keeping it under 10 minutes, and not using an eHow xfoliant on a regular basis.

Williams F1 team sold to US investment firm The Williams Racing Formula 1 squad has been acquired by American private investment firm Dorilton Capital, in a deal that team bosses say will both ensure its survival and “provide a path to success”. The owners of the Oxfordshirebased team began the search for a buyer as part of a strategic review that began in May. The confirmation of the deal comes shortly after every F1 bosses and all 10 F1 teams, including Williams, agreed a new Concorde Agreement, which lays out how the sport is governed and prize money is distributed. Founded by Sir Frank Williams, Williams is one of the most successful teams in F1 history, with 114 race wins, nine constructors’ championships and seven drivers’ championships. But it has slipped down the grid in recent years and, as one of the few true independent teams, has struggled against high-spending manufacturer rivals. The Dorilton deal was unanimously approved by the Williams board. New York-based Dorilton is a private investment firm founded in 2009 that specialises in longterm investments in ‘lower middle market’ companies. The deal is well-timed for

Williams, ahead of sweeping changes to F1 regulations being introduced, including a new cost cap and revamped technical rules, that should allow smaller teams to be more competitive. In June, Williams bosses outlined their recovery plan to return to the front of the grid once investment was secured. Speaking after the Dorilton deal, deputy team principal Claire Williams said: “We wanted to find a partner who shared the same passion and values, who recognised the team’s potential and who could unlock its power. In Dorilton, we know we have found exactly that. People who understand the sport and what it takes to be successful. People who respect the team’s legacy and will do everything to ensure it succeeds in the future. “As a family, we have always put our team first. Making the team

successful again and protecting our people has been at the heart of this process from start. This may be the end of an era for Williams as a family-owned team, but we know it's in good hands. The sale ensures the team’s survival but most importantly will provide a path to success.” Dorilton chairman Matthew Savage said: “We believe we are the ideal partner for the company due to our flexible and patient investment style, which will allow the team to focus on its objective of returning to the front of the grid. “We look forward to working with the Williams team in carrying out a detailed review of the business to determine in which areas new investment should be directed. We also recognise the world class facilities at Grove and confirm that there are no plans to relocate.”

Use the Correct Lane There have been reports of drivers in Spain being fined for driving in the centre lane of a motorway, even when the road is clear. This is an offence and drivers who do so can be fined, but the reality is, other than we drive on the right in Spain, there is no difference to the UK, where “middle lane hogging” is also an offence. Looking at how the two countries compare on roads with more than one lane in the direction of travel, if we first look at the UK, and what Rule 264 of the Highway Code states. “You should always drive in the lefthand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past.” Comparing that to Spain, where we drive on the right, in fact the rule says as far to the right as possible, Article 31 of the Reglamento General Circulacion is where we see rules for normal traffic flow explained. “On roads with more than one lane for the direction of travel, the normal flow of traffic is in the right hand lane, although you can use the other lane(s) when traffic circumstances dictate”, there is also an extension of the rule which states “provided you do not hinder the progress of another vehicle”. Although the wording is slightly different, bearing in mind the Spanish version is an interpretation for ease of understanding and not a literal translation, the concept is the same. Under normal traffic circumstances, unless traffic determines otherwise, in the UK we should always drive in the left-hand lane, in Spain we should always use the right-hand lane.

The problem has always been one of understanding the rules of the road. The concept forms an integral part of UK driver training and has done for many years. You only have to look through historic copies of the Highway Code and you will see the rules clearly printed. But it is a rule seemingly difficult for many to understand. In 2004, the UK launched a pilot scheme with road signs pointing out the correct lane discipline, and yet these were still largely ignored. More recently, the UK changed their procedure for dealing with drivers who remain in the centre lane, by changing

the procedure for reporting the offence and making it punishable by fixed penalty notice, thus drivers can be fined on the spot and be 100 pound out of pocket. Back in Spain, the same process is already in place. That is why drivers are issued with on the spot fines, not because they are targeted for being foreigners or any of the other excuses that have been made, but because driving in the right-hand lane is the normal procedure for the flow of traffic, and the fact that “nobody else was around” is not a justifiable excuse for committing any offence.

Insecure Animal Risks According to data compiled by Royal Canin and RACE, supported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) and the DGT, 12% of drivers who travel with animals do so incorrectly, to the point of endangering both their lives and that of the other occupants of the vehicle. The report, "Companion Animals and Road Safety", includes risk situations with simulated animals inside the vehicle, tips for transporting the animal safely and a research survey with a sample of over a thousand people. It also highlights the need to use appropriate restraint systems for animals, to control the temperature of the cabin and to monitor the animal during stops, to guarantee the well-being of the pet during travel. Survey of more than 1,300 drivers According to the survey included in the report, carried out on more than 1,300 drivers, one in three (36%) travels with their pet, 87% uses restraint systems, 11% places the animal in the boot, separate from the occupants, but without retention, protection, or separating net, and only 1% carry the animal loose in the vehicle or in the arms of an occupant. Of the restraint systems used, 62% of those surveyed use seat belts or harnesses for their pets, a percentage that in 2011 stood at 45%. Of the rest of the systems, 12% use carriers attached to the seat with the belt, 10% of users use carriers in the boot, 8% use bars or separating nets and 4% use

carriers placed on the floor. Track tests RACE, in collaboration with other European clubs (ADAC, from Germany, and ÖAMTC, from Austria), has carried out simulations on the track of emergency braking and dodging manoeuvres at 100 kilometres per hour, with dolls of different weights (4kg, 8kg, 12.8kg and 25kg) inside the passenger compartment, in different positions and using different restraint systems. The tests conclude that the animal becomes a great risk for the rest of the occupants when being projected: a 5 kg dog, in an accident at 60 km / h, multiplies its weight by 56 due to inertia, and it shoots out with an equivalent weight of 280 kilograms. The report also points out that the boot and the rear space in the foot area are the most recommended for traveling with pets, but always with an adequate restraint system, such as safety harnesses, transport boxes or carriers attached to the vehicle. or trunk separation barriers. 10 tips to travel comfortably and safely with animals 1. Never travel with a loose animal in the cabin There are significant risks to the animal and other occupants and may also pose a danger to rescue teams in the event of an accident. It can involve a penalty of up to 100 euro. 2. Choose a suitable retention system Among the available systems are

restraint harnesses (with a short and stable connection system), carriers or passenger compartment dividers, which must be firm and well anchored to prevent displacement. 3. Do not place objects next to the animal In case of impact, they can become projectiles. 4. Control the animal at rest stops When you open the boot or the door of the vehicle, the animal can run away and cause an incident. 5. Never leave the animal inside the vehicle with high temperatures Not even in a shady area or with the windows open. 6. Stop every two hours Thus, the animal can urinate or defecate, walk and hydrate. 7. Control possible dizziness If the animal has a tendency to get dizzy, it is preferable not to feed or drink it in the hours before the trip. Take advantage of the stops to drink. 8. Monitor the vehicle temperature Ensuring adequate ventilation always. 9. Accustom the animal to the restraint system If the animal usually travels in the vehicle, get him used to traveling restrained from being a puppy, in a carrier or separated by a system that prevents access to the cabin. 10. Never restrain the animal with its leash It is not a restraint system and poses a significant risk of injury, both to the animal and to the rest of the occupants.

Imanyo Golf Society Elche CF Just Do It! Jodie Lee Baxter Trophy This was a one-off fund raiser trophy competition in aid of Jodie Lee Baxter. Through illness Jodie is currently in a wheel chair. She is a young Mum of three and lives in a first floor apartment so is reliant on her husband (who works long hours) to carry her up and down stairs. Despite her own situation, Jodie has helped many people with her constant information and help on the Daya Nueva Facebook page during the pandemic and also during last September’s floods. Currently Jodie’s husband is converting their garage (when he has time) to a living space so Jodie can come and go independently. As a thank you for all her help Imanyo Golf Society and Imanyo Bar managed to raise a fantastic €750 through donations, fines for balls in the water, Imanyo’s sponsorship and a football card, this is

all going toward much needed help for Jodie. The format for Jodie’s Trophy was singles full handicap Stableford played in two groups at Font Del Llop. The overall winner of the Jodie Lee Baxter Trophy from group “B” with a block busting and handicap cutting 39 points was Gary Smith, runner up of group B was “Have ago Golfer” Steve Day with 32 points. Group “A” winner was the “On Fire” Steve Burns

with a fantastic 38 points, runner up was “Twelve Trees“ Steve Ayre. Nearest the pins were won by hole 3 “On Fire” Steve Burns, hole 5 “Twelve Trees” Steve Ayre, holes 8 and 12 “The Joker” Mick Billins and hole13 Sean McGuinness, hole 17 New member Pete Kelly. Thank you to everyone hopefully to make a big difference to Jodie’s life. The football card was won by “Sandy” Terry Burton with Ipswich Town winning €20 and raising €60 for our charity for the day.

The last two matches of this season’s Spanish Segunda Division took place last week. They were the two legs of the play off final for promotion to La Liga between Elche CF and Girona. After 42 games Elche had finished in 6th with 61 points and Girona in 5th with 63 points. The results for their matches this season saw Elche taking all 6 points. Elche beat Girona away 2-1 in October, and at home they won 1-0 in June. Elche could gain confidence from their head to head form. Girona could gain confidence from their latest performances, as they went unbeaten in their last 8 regular season games. The first leg kicked off at 22.00 on Thursday night in Elche. A small crowd, socially distancing, cumulated in the streets around the stadium to welcome the team buses. The pitch was looking awful, with lots of brown bare patches, but once play started it was evident that the roll of the ball was not affected. The game itself was very slow, very tight and with very few chances. Two long range shots from both teams, both ended with nothing. Girona’s best chance came from Samu whose strike just shaved the outside edge of Edgar’s far post. Elche’s chance came when Josan cut in from the right hand side, passing to Pere Milla. This was a great opportunity, but Milla failed to convert, not getting the shot on

target. The uneventful game eventually ended on 95 minutes with a 0-0 scoreline. This was a very positive result for Elche, as they had kept Girona from scoring that all important away goal. In order to make La Liga, Elche had to score at the Estadio Montilivi and had to maintain a goal difference of no more than 1 less than Girona. Any other result would see Girona promoted, based on them finishing higher up the table in the Segunda Division. On Sunday Elche travelled to Girona by air, arriving at lunchtime ready for the 22.00 kick off. The teams were facing their biggest game of the season with the huge prize of ascension to La Liga awaiting the winner. Jonathas Jesus was back in the starting line up, after serving his 2 match ban for his sending off in the first Semi Final game. The first half was much the same as the first leg, with very few shots on goal. Elche CF only had 35 percent of the procession and did not once test Riesgo in the Girona goal. Jonathas got himself booked again for an idiotic challenge, causing Pacheta to instruct Pere Milla to warm up

with a view to a substitution, but this was not needed. The 1st half ended 0-0. Elche CF came out strong for the second half and were soon bolstered by a straight Red Card for Girona’s star player Stunani for a nasty tackle on 61 minutes. Surely Elche could capitalise on the extra man advantage and not have the game go to extra time. Patcheta reinforced the team by substituting on forward attacking players Pere Milla, Dani Escriche and Fidel Chaves. Still the goal proved to be elusive. Injury time of 8 minutes was announced and added, the pressure was ranking up. THEN IT HAPPENED with just 2 minutes left Pere Milla put a header in to the back post Gooooooaaaaaalllllll! Fantastic result for Franjiverde Fans. Elche CF will play the next season in La Liga! Once spectators are allowed into stadiums, EuroTourGuide will be organising coach tours and tickets to all of the Elche CF home matches. TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

The Champions League Final? If there’s not even an English lino in it then it doesn’t count as far as I am concerned. Sure, some Arsenal fans were faking some interest given Serge Gnabry playing. Some United fans were wondering why Angel Di Maria never quite did it for them and wishing Ander Herrera had stuck around. And Stoke City fans were looking at ChoupoMoting and still scratching their heads. As for the match? I am sure it has nothing on next weekend’s Community Shield, right? Staying with the Champions League, for a moment - Manchester City’s desperation to win the competition led them to appoint Pep Guardiola way back when and regardless of how many domestic tin pots he lifts in his time with the club he will be considered a failure if he leaves without the big one tucked under his arm? ‘How so?’ many people will be exclaiming in this moment, completely ignoring the basic rule of life that suggests if you don’t do the job you were explicitly hired for then you have failed. Fear of failure leads to decisions being made that wouldn’t normally be made and there is a danger Peppy G has heard enough people moan, ‘he only won the Champions League with Barcelona because of Messi’ enough times for him to start believing it himself. Throw in the fact that the little Argentine is believed to be open to the

suggestion that he may not retire at the Camp Nou after all, and even my most lazy of reader can start to do the maths. That’s right - Guardiola would be delighted to welcome his ageing rock star to the Etihad and get the band back together for a one-off, if you don’t win it this time please leave, farewell gig. With failed Everton gaffer Ronald Koeman arriving in Catalonia on the epitome of a hiding to nothing, there is an expected clearout of Barcelona deadwood that is getting the laziest of EPL recruitment departments all in a lather. Luis Suarez! Gerard Pique! Sergio Busquets! Jordi Alba! That one over there! And him! All for sale, all available at still-inflated prices for anyone daft enough to pay the crazy fees and wages needed to bring them to the promised land of the Premier League. It’s little wonder Ed Woodward hasn’t been seen in public for a few weeks - Ole has probably locked him in a room somewhere to stop him getting too excited and firing off ‘name your own price’ offers to all the Barca cast-offs that nobody else is looking to sign. Just take a moment to pause and reflect on how incredibly hard Solskjaer must have to work to make sensible signings and make sure for every Bruno Fernandes he’s not lumbered with another three Alexis Sanchezes. Speaking of sensible dealings at United, they are starting to get the feeling that Borussia Dortmund are not mad keen on selling their best player after all - the biggest hint being that the club have repeatedly said

Jadon Sancho is absolutely not for sale. Therefore, United are looking elsewhere and have stumbled across a cunning plan where for the £100m+ Sancho would cost they could have Bournemouth’s David Brooks, Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish and still have enough left over to pay Harry Maguire’s upcoming court fees. Spurs are likely to be doing things on the cheap this window, meaning Ainsley Maitland-Niles might pop over from Arsenal for a few million and Liverpool’s Rhian Brewster might come and be Harry’s understudy for the next season on loan. Spurs fans will settle for that, you know how relaxed they are about summer signings and all that. Only kidding. Jose wants Gareth Bale as well. There could be lots happening at Arsenal, and Ainsley leaving is the tip of the departure iceberg. Mikel Arteta also wants shot of Guendozi who, according to plenty of sources, isn’t the easiest young man to get on with. With the Gunners about to sign the Brazilian Gabriel - yes, David Luiz hasn’t put them off Brazilian central defenders for life - Arteta’s attention is moving towards tempting Crystal Palace to let him have Wilf Zaha for a pittance, rather than the £80m the club still believes he is worth. Chelsea have been busy, but isn’t that just the way of Frank Lampard? He knows he needs a left-back, so the whole Ben Chilwell saga continues to roll on and I almost guarantee there will come a point where we giggle and go, ‘£80m? They paid £80m?’ To offset that overspend, Lamps is also in talks with PSG’s Thiago Silva because Chelsea only

win titles when they have a Brazilian in their defence, apparently. I didn’t even remember Alex won a title. Frank also really, really wants Kai Havertz but not so much that he’s prepared to spend £90m on the German schemer. You wouldn’t have thought Andrea Pirlo would have much of a Premier League knock-on effect, but you’d be wrong. The ultimate regista has registered that he doesn’t much rate Aaron Ramsey and suspects someone in the EPL will give him a lot of money for the Welshman. And that money, after all, could go some way to taking Paul Pogba away from United just as his bromance with Bruno was starting to look serious. Andrea has also identified Wolves’ Raul Jiminez as the guy to challenge Romelu Lukaku as the best target man most likely to score an own goal at a critical time next season. Ollie Watkins of Brentford is ticking all the boxes for newly-promoted clubs with Leeds, WBA and Fulham all being linked to the striker. Bielsa is ensuring that the club are only being linked to smart-sounding signings - including Michy Batshuyai who would welcome a move to anyone willing to suggest he is better than Patrick Bamford. And we end where we started, in Barcelona. Ronald Koeman was last with the club when they were the big cheese, hence his belief that Liverpool’s Gini Wijnaldum might walk away from a good thing to a bad thing before the season gets underway. Koeman also sees what the rest of sees in the fact that Angelino is a damn fine left-back even if Pep doesn’t trust him to be any less of a car-crash than Benjamin Mendy.
