Elche couple on trial for killing toddler son See Main Advert on page 31

The prosecution service is asking for a permanent prison sentence for a mother and her boyfriend, aged 27 and 29, who beat and strangled her two year old son in the family home. The child died after four days in intensive care.

Lawyer Marcos García-Montes, acting on behalf of the child’s biological father is calling for a reviewable permanent prison sentence of 28 years, 25 for murder and three for habitual ill-treatment. The trial began yesterday in the seventh section of the Alicante Provincial Court, based in Elche, with the election of the jury, and in principle it is expected that the case will last until Friday. On 13th September, two years ago, the defendants were at the family home on Manuel Ruiz Magro street in the city of Elche when at one point in the morning it is claimed that the child, whose name was Aarón, behaved so badly that it left the defendants "so upset that they found no better way to correct him than to beat him”, according to the prosecutor's brief. Whether it was a joint beating or only the stepfather but "with the knowledge and consent" of the biological mother,

the public prosecutor maintains that the defendant/s "seized the child with great violence and while yelling at him, beat him with slaps and punches that were really hard.” In addition, they held him tightly and "smash him against the wall" which caused an extensive bruise and other injuries of varying degrees in the toddler, although the cause of death was not these injuries but the subsequent strangulation. "After the defendants plunged into the violence of the beating, they grabbed him by the neck, squeezing him with such force that they caused the child to suffocate, preventing him from breathing until he fainted due to lack of oxygen," according to the court papers. The prosecutor reports that, only when the child became unconscious, did the Continued on page 2

Spain arrests virus denier for inciting violence Spanish police said on Friday they had arrested a man who believes the Covid-19 pandemic is a hoax. The arrest came after the man began using social media to incite violence against politicians, including Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. The 38-year-old claimed healthcare workers and the media were behind what he called “the Covid farce” and urged his followers to attack officials and institutions, police said in a statement. They added that the man wrote in one of his messages that “all of this would be solved with a shot in the back of Pedro Sanchez’s head”. In other posts he called for Spain’s college of physicians to be burned down, threatened that he was going to set fire to a newspaper office in the northeastern region of Aragon and asked his followers to help him

find the addresses of several journalists who he said he wanted to “give a good scare” to. The man, who was not identified, also allegedly passed himself off as a government official in calls that he made to care homes for the elderly, hospitals, media outlets and football clubs to spread “false information” about the pandemic. Police said they arrested the man in the town of Cuarte de Huerva just south of Zaragoza, the capital of Aragon. He faces charges of inciting hatred, inciting violence, making threats, slander and usurpation of public functions. His arrest comes as Spain, one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic, is grappling with a new surge in Covid-19 infections. The number of confirmed cases of the respiratory disease surpassed 400,000 last week and nearly 29,000 people have died.

Continued from page 1 couple begin to "understand the seriousness of the acts they had just carried out and, frightened, they rushed to take the child to the hospital", where he died four days later in the paediatric ICU of the General Hospital of Alicante due to the consequences of strangulation. Apart from the injuries suffered that day, the autopsy discovered that the child had signs of previous injuries on different parts of his head, as well as traces of bruises on the ribs, spine, lungs and other parts of the body, all of them, according to the prosecutor, as a result of the continuous mistreatment that the young Aaron suffered during the time he lived with the couple. The indictment statements claim that during the investigation the defendants acknowledged what happened during the argument and admitted that it was "their way of educating the child" and that "they beat him to correct him."

Drunk man rescued from cliff in Torrevieja A drunken man in his 40s was rescued last night from the cliffs next to the Los Locos beach in Torrevieja on Friday night. He had various bruises, but thanks to the rescue was otherwise unharmed.

According to the Provincial Firefighting Consortium of the Alicante Provincial Council, the rescue took place at 9pm from a cave and evacuation was required on a "nest" type stretcher to save the man from a

6-meter drop. The firefighters were called in because the man could not get out on his own, and once safe he was transferred to the city hospital.

Back to school safety measures agreed Compulsory masks for all children aged six and over – including on school buses – and temperatures taken upon entry every morning are some of the moves agreed as part of Spain's back-to-class strategy. The new term begins at different times in different regions, in Alicante Province pupils will start filtering back into the classroom between the 7th and 11th September. Education minister Isabel Celaá, health minister Salvador Illa and territorial policy and public functions minister Carolina Darias met with representatives from all 17 of Spain's autonomously-governed regions, plus those of the two cityprovinces of Ceuta and Melilla on the northern Moroccan coast. They all managed to agree on 29 specific measures and five recommendations to be adopted ahead of the new academic year in September, except the Basque Country, which abstained when they were voted upon. Children attending class in person is a priority, at least up to second year of high school (aged 12 and 13). This is because in the event of further outbreaks that make it advisable to stay at home, it is considered that teens aged 14 to 18 and university students would have the maturity and self-discipline to follow lessons remotely from home – also, above age 14, they do not need to have a parent at home with them during the day if this is not possible due to adult working hours. Distances of at least 1.5 metres between children, and between the children and the teachers, must be kept as far as is practical, and emphasis should be placed on ensuring children wash their hands regularly. Rooms should be kept ventilated as much as possible and cleaned and disinfected stringently. School lunches will still be served, although children will be expected to sit at least 1.5 metres apart. No specific instructions have been issued for class sizes, but regional governments have taken on more teachers this year to

enable them to cut group numbers, and it is recommended that no more than 15 to 20 children form part of each class. If three people – pupils or teachers – at any school become infected, this will be treated as an 'outbreak' and the school will be temporarily shut, although two or fewer will only affect specific, relevant class groups. Shutting an entire school will be a 'last resort' to prevent uncontrolled contagion. Where this happens, or a single class group has to close down, all pupils in that group or in the school, and all teachers who have been in contact with them, will be PCR-tested and ordered to quarantine for at least 14 days. Except in the case of an actual case of Covid-19, schools will remain open

throughout the whole of the academic year, and support for pupils with special educational needs and for 'vulnerable' families – such as those on very low incomes – will continue, 'for as long as the epidemiological situation requires it'. Ongoing training for teachers, other service staff in schools, and pupils will be given in terms of health, safety and prevention, and each school will have a 'Covid coordinator' who will be the first port of call in the event of a 'positive outbreak'. Teachers and other staff are urged to restrict their time on the premises to the 'bare essential' – as in, if part of their job does not require them to be there, such as marking essays and preparing lessons, they should do this at home, unless it involves having to return home and then come back an hour or two later to teach

another class. “The aim of this agreement is twofold: Give greater priority to face-to-face teaching in infants', primary and the first year of secondary; and to achieve a safe, healthy and sustainable return to school for the whole educational community,” Isabel Celaá said. 'Bubble groups' Pupils will be organised into class groups which spend all their time together, to reduce or eliminate mixing between classes, and these selfcontained groups will do their socialising and learning together. Within these groups, physical distancing will not be required, even in the canteen, but masks must be worn from age six upwards and every child will have the same seat in their classrooms and in the lunch hall all year. Staff are recommended to stagger break-times, lunchtimes and entrances and exits where they can, to minimise the likelihood of different class groups mixing with each other. These selfcontained classes are known as 'bubble groups', although it is not clear how they will be arranged and whether this could cause stress for kids separated from their friends. Organised hand-washing, five times at day at least, airing classrooms for a minimum of 10 to 15 minutes at a time as often as possible, talks with children on health and hygiene, and ensuring order at the entrances so temperatures can be taken before they set foot inside the building will be standard practice. Anyone who displays symptoms compatible with Covid-19 will automatically be required to stay at home without prior consultation – including children, cleaners, teachers, and administration staff – and everyone who has been in contact with them will be tested.

Orihuela tries to sell Costa land for 21 million, again The Orihuela City Council has put up for auction, for the second time this year, three plots of land on the Coast which it intends to sell for 21 million euros (taxes included). This is a repeat of the procedure and practically the same estimated price of the plots as the first attempted sale, which received no bids. After there was no interest in the sale, the local government said it would reconsider whether to auction the plots again and if necessary to modify the value and conditions of the land. However, the new procedure has been made public with almost the same details. Companies in the construction sector have until 14th September to submit offers. The new auction announcement appeared on Saturday on the State Procurement platform. The first of the plots, is located in PAU-21, Colinas Golf Resort, has an area of 38,539 square meters, of which 24,194 square meters are buildable, with a starting price of the auction of 14.4 million euros (VAT included). This is one of the areas with the highest land

values in Orihuela Costa despite not being on the front line. The second plot is located in the La Cuerda sector, with an area of 15,861 square meters and 7,726 square meters of buildable area. This urbanisation is located between La Regia and Castillo de

was set at one million, where we see the only price reduction. News of the sale has once again brough mixed emotions. As this council is already sitting on €20,000,000 from the sale of land last year and the Mayor pledged the money would be spent on improvements for the Coast – but will that be the case. Local political party Partido Independencia Orihuela Costa (PIOC) says ‘now more than ever the mayor should put that money to good use here on the Coast, support local businesses and struggling residents who have been laid off work’. The party estimates that soon there will be around 5,000 vacant properties for sale here on the coast and that there are an estimated 500 building applications in the pipeline for the coast. A spokesman for PIOC said: “We will always be viewed as no more than a golden goose for the Orihuela government, so it does look like the coast is for sale at any price.”

SE VENDE FOR SALE Don Juan, on the second line of the Oriolana coast. The starting price is 4.6 million euros (including VAT). The third plot is in the El Garbanzuelo sector (PAU -9), which has 6,951 square meters, with a buildable area of 3,659 square meters and a starting price of 608,000 euros. Located in the north Orihuela Costa on the second line of the coastal stretch and bordering Torrevieja. It is on this last plot, where the exit appraised value

Surfs up in Orihuela Costa

The Depertment responsible for the Beaches of Orihuela has set up an area for surfing in Cala Cerrada. The surfing hot spot has been marked with clear signage so people know where to head. The Department has been working in collaboration with the group of surfers who practice this sport on the Oriolano coast. An information panel has been installed at the entrance to the cove which contains the regulations for the use of the space. "With this action we regulate the practice of this water sport while

guaranteeing the safety of bathers," said Ram贸n L贸pez, Councillor for Orihuela's Beaches and Citizen Security. Cala Cerrada is the only beach on the Oriolano coast that, according to experts, brings together the optimal conditions and characteristics for surfing and that is why the practice of this sport has been agreed for this stretch of the coast, but in a way that is safe for all. You can only surf in the high season (from 15th June to 15th September) until 10:00 in the morning and after until 8pm. Out

of season surfers can use the ocean at any time. So long as the sport is carried out with the safety of other sea goers. Likewise, any surfer who intends to practice surfing must be the holder of a license issued by the relevant federation for this sport. Finally, Ram贸n L贸pez, has shown his satisfaction with this step forward in the practice of this sport and has ensured that "Orihuela can now become a benchmark for surf tourism because there are weather components that allow practicing it throughout the year."

Prewinter cleanup The councillors for Road Cleaning and the Environment have explained that the two municipal areas have begun cleaning up debris including waste, plastics and scrub around Mount San Miguel and the various ravines of Orihuela, in order to prevent the rubbish being swept away and causing blockages or damage by the heavy rains that often occur in the winter months. To carry out these works, the Department of the Environment has a brigade of 15 agricultural workers from employment promotion programs that together with personnel from the Department of Street Cleaning are removing all those items that could problems. The ravines are also being cleared of bushes that could hinder the flow of water or cause a dam-like effect and stop the water being released into the sea. Work is also being carried out in the ravine beds near the neighbourhoods of San Isidro, Calle Castillo, Pocico Santiago, around the diocesan Seminary and Calle Arriba - Rincón Hernandino, as well as in the neighbourhood of San Antón. Councillor Damaso Aparicio, explained that the Department of the Environment is commitment to the cleaning of the riverbed as well as ravines both in the mountains as well as

Selling during a pandemic does have its challenges. Viewings for example, may be a little awkward right now but definitely not impossible! There are genuine buyers out there looking for a deal, but then again wouldn’t you be too if you were in their shoes? Work underway

the coastal area. For these measures to last, citizen collaboration is essential. People must take their share of responsibility and look after these spaces by not dumping rubbish and unwanted items into the natural environment and suing the specialist containers provided by the government. Augamarina As part of the pre-winter clean-up and Councillor also announced that the cliffs at Aguamarina and the steep

slopes of La Caleta in Cabo Roig will also be cleaned. The works will consist of the removal of waste and plastics from the Microreserva Punta La Glea-Aguamarina and La Caleta beach. Due to the steepness of the areas and the difficult access to be able to carry out such work, a company specialising in rope access cleaning has been hired. Once again the Councillor called on members of the local community to help keep these areas clean and tidy over the coming months.

So what if your property was on the market for sale and you had a buyer that loved your home, but was also looking for a great deal? How would you feel about receiving an offer? Many people would be delighted to receive an offer on their home, but there are others that tend to second guess themselves when a serious offer is on the table. It could be that knee jerk reaction…. “Someone is asking me to reduce my already fantastically priced and well cared for home? How dare they not pay me my asking price?” When really you should be asking yourself “how would you feel if they walked away?”

I’ve seen many times where a vendor automatically assumes if they gratefully decline the first offer, the next one will surely be “the right one!” This is not the case! Just because you turned down one offer doesn’t mean that the next one is guaranteed to be more. It may even be… less! If you need to close this chapter in your life and move on to the next, you should consider your first offer with care. If it means you can move on with your life, then do it! Sometimes holding out for a figure you have in your head, could cost you a sale in the long run. We have always found that the first offer is usually the best one. Selling a home is about more than just money, it’s about how smooth the transaction can be and moving on to the next chapter in your life. If you can make it work, then accepting the first offer will be the right move to make! Prime Minister asks all citizens to download ‘Radar Covid’ App Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has highlighted the importance of the tracking app Radar Covid in curbing the rising number of coronavirus cases in the country. “Technology can also save lives if it is employed to face a challenge like the one we have before us. That’s why we have promoted the Radar Covid app,” Sánchez said at a press conference. The Socialist Party (PSOE) leader confirmed that the app has already been implemented in the regions of Andalusia, Cantabria, Extremadura, Castilla y León and the Canary and Balearic Islands; and said it urgently needed to be adopted across the rest of the country. The call comes as Spain continues to see a sharp spike in Covid-19 infections, with more than 7,000 reported last Tuesday. “We urge the remaining regions who have not yet done so to incorporate the digital tracking system,” said Sánchez, adding that “all citizens must download the application.” Radar Covid has been available to download from app stores for several weeks now. It helps track contacts at risk of contagion by using a cellphone’s bluetooth system. When the handsets of two users are next to each other for at least 15 minutes within a two-meter distance, a file is exchanged via bluetooth that is saved for 14 days. If a person tests

positive for Covid-19, the doctor or contact tracer issues them a random alphanumeric number. When the patient introduces this number into the app – which is done voluntarily – all users who have been in close contact with them will receive an alert. The app revises these codes twice a day to check for updates. At no point is the identity of the patient revealed. “The information obtained by tracking contacts allows us to understand the level of risk of contagion and warn those affected,” explained Sánchez. Effectiveness “According to the estimations we have, if more than 20 percent [of the population] downloads the app, it could reduce the impact of the pandemic by 30 percent,” said Sánchez. This assessment, provided previously by the technical advisor of the project, Pablo Rodríguez, is backed by a study from Oxford University that found that, for the app to be most effective, it must be downloaded by 60 percent of the population, but a lower percentage will also help curb contagion. According to Sánchez, Radar Covid proved its effectiveness in July during a pilot program in La Gomera in Spain’s Canary Islands. During this pilot, a fictional coronavirus outbreak of 300

cases was simulated in a bid to test the effectiveness of the app. By the end of the experiment, the app had detected 6.4 close contacts at risk of contagion, much higher than the 3.5 contacts identified on average by human contact tracers. “Digital resources are available to the regions and we invite them to use them as soon as possible to benefit all our compatriots,” said Sánchez. Installation and use Installing Covid Radar is a simple process. Users need to download the app

(Google Play Store for Android mobile phones, Apple App Store for iOS cellphones), accept the privacy policy and activate their handset’s bluetooth system. A person who tests positive for Covid19 can use the app to anonymously warn close contacts of the risk of infection. They can also check their own level of risk and receive alerts if they have been exposed to the virus. Other European countries have already introduced their own coronavirus tracking apps. France launched

StopCovid in June, and Germany released its device in the middle of that month. In Ireland, 37 percent of the population has downloaded the country’s tracking app – one of the highest rates in Europe – and in Germany, the figure is 20 percent. Other countries, such as Norway and the United Kingdom, have refused to introduce digital tracking systems. In the case of Norway, authorities are concerned about privacy issues and, given the low transmission rates in the country, do not believe the benefits outweigh the potential violations of privacy.

Body recovered from The curious incident of the fully Crevillent reservoir dressed man on a surfboard... The lifeless body of a young man was recovered at the edge of a reservoir in the early hours of the morning on Friday. Divers from the Guardia Civil were called to the scene by a group after their friend got into difficulty. Both the Benemérita and the Local Police of Crevillent rushed to the scene after friends of the victim reported his disappearance while they were swimming. It is expressly forbidden to swim in the reservoir for safety reasons. The Councillor for Security and Police,

Josep Candela, reported that members of the Special Groups of Underwater Activities (GEAS) of the Civil Guard had located, after midnight on Friday, the lifeless body of the bather, a 24-year-old Moroccan. The victim had disappeared at around 4:30pm on Thursday in the Crevillent reservoir, where she was apparently bathing with four friends. Together with GEAS, other members of the Civil Guard and Local Police of Crevillent have participated in the search.

Police are waiting to speak to a 55-yearold Brit who was found floating off Marbella, fully clothed on a surf board. The man, who was rescued by the Spanish coastguard claimed that he had been out there for three-days after falling overboard from a cruise ship. The man was initially spotted by the crew of a yacht. Bobbing about arond 10miles south-west of Marbella. The man was wearing a life jacket and fully dressed in a white shirt. He was de-hydrated and hypothermic and so was taken to Estepona for medical treatment. The whole situation is very strange as there have been no persons reported missing overboard from any pleasure or cruise boats and it is unclear how the man came to be on the surfboard; where did

Threeyearold drowns in Campoverde A 3-year-old boy drowned in a swimming pool in Pinar de Campoverde, part of Pilar de la Horadada. The minor, of French nationality but of Maghrebi origin, was treated at the scene by emergency teams but tragically the cardiopulmonary resuscitation manoeuvres, which the team performed for more than an hour, were not successful and the medics were not able to save his life. The notice was given by the family after 9pm. According to sources, the child was in the house with his family when he fell into the pool, without his family realising. A child under 6 years old was been the one who pulled the child out of the pool and notified his parents. The tragedy happened at a villa located on Madroño de Pinar de Campoverde street and the municipal ambulance from Ambumar SYA was quickly at the scene. The crew, with an emergency technician and a nurse, carried out the first resuscitation manoeuvres one the child, but there was no response. On arrival the SAMU crew continued with the resuscitation procedures for over an hour, making every effort to save the child's life. But, finally, they were only able to confirm the death of the child by drowning. The child’s family was spending their holidays in the house. The child's body will be transferred to the Forensic Anatomical Institute where

it come from and where is its owner? Nor indeed, how managed to drift for three days in the ocean and still be relatively unharmed.

the autopsy will be performed. The Judicial Police of the Civil Guard has taken over the investigation. He is the third child to die by drowning in a pool in the Vega Baja this August, all of them caused by a moment of neglect by the relatives. On 5th August, a 4-yearold boy of Belgian nationality, but of Maghreb origin, who had arrived that afternoon with his family at the home of relatives in Ciudad Quesada, died when he fell into the pool. And on 9th August, a 2 year old French child, died in a residential complex in the La Zenia in Orihuela Costa, drowned in the community pool. The authorities are warning parents and families to be extra cautious and not to lose sight of children

– even for a few minutes - when there are swimming pools in their place of residence.

Police are keen to talk to the man and get the answers to these questions and solve th mystery, as well as finding out who the man is.

Infections have grown rapidly with 80 positives results being recently recorded through PCR tests. This saw Lorca Centro medical office declare ‘red level’ alert on Friday, joining two others in the city. The situation at Rafael Mendez Hospital remains critical with 22 admissions to ICU

which is at 100 percent capacity. This turn of events has prompted local mayor, Diego Jose Mateos, to hold a press conference admitting ´nothing is ruled out’ and a firm decision will not be made until next week. The mayor was quick to claim that the regional government had ignored the area, saying there was a lack of health-related material and human resources, which are now urgently needed to be able to take charge of the situation.

Valencia asks government for military trackers The 2,000 Army trackers that the Prime Minister offered to the autonomous communities recently have more and more interested parties. The Valencian Community has accepted this support to contain the coronavirus and has announced that it will formalise the request for 150 military trackers to act in the metropolitan area of Valencia. The Valencian capital and its metropolitan area, with a population of approximately 1.6 million inhabitants, have seen the number of cases grow in recent days. "Today we will formally request its application," said the Valencian president, Ximo Puig. Cantabria has also announced that it will request support from the Government, after the weekly meeting of its Council, as Murcia did. Galicia and Castilla y León have requested more details of the collaboration. Catalonia and the Basque Country ruled it out at first, although today, the Government spokesperson, Meritxell Budó, has assured that they will resort to this support "if necessary". The Ministry for Health must now evaluate these requests and send them to the Ministry of Defence so that it can assign the requested military personnel to each territory. The aim is for the

process to be very fast. "It will be done immediately and the communities will receive the trackers they need, for as long as necessary," the undersecretary of Defence, Amparo Valcarce, explained. "We will give the communities the action protocol and the trackers will be ready to join now and at any stage of the tracking process," Minister Margarita Robles underlined in an informative meeting to explain the details of the project. Despite initial reluctance, Murcia was the first to announce, late last Wednesday, that it will request 60 trackers from the armed forces. Galicia showed interest. The Regional Minister of Health of the Xunta, Jesús Vázquez Almuíña, wrote to the Minister of Defence to request "concretion of the offer for collaboration" and today, the Vice President of Castilla y León, Francisco Igea, has announced that they have also asked for more details with the profiles of the trackers. The Government of Cantabria has also processed your request. "Incorporating military personnel is good because they are already trained and endorsed for the work they have to develop," said Pablo Zuloaga, vice

president and spokesman for the regional Executive. Zuloaga, leader of the Cantabrian PSOE, has not specified the total number of soldiers who will join these tasks because the distribution depends on the communities that request these resources. The regional president, Miguel Ángel Revilla insisted this week that Cantabria was not going to apply the state of alarm no matter how much they had this possibility, while the Health area has stressed that they trust that the increase in cases will be mitigated as it ends summer and the presence of tourists in the territory and mobility are reduced. The region has 858 positives after registering 115 new infections in the last 24 hours. Likewise, three people have been added to the total of admitted to hospital facilities, 31 throughout Cantabria. Only one of them is in ICUs. Defence promises speed The request for trackers consists of two phases. First, the communities go to Health, which must evaluate the needs and send them to Defence so that it can assign the requested military to each territory. The goal is for the process to be very fast. "It will be done immediately and the communities will

receive the trackers they need, for as long as necessary," said the undersecretary of Defence, Amparo Valcarce, at an informative meeting to detail the project. "The trackers will be ready to join now and at any stage of the tracking process," added the minister, Margarita Robles.

Defence will bear the expenses of these soldiers, who have received six specific training modules on the coronavirus. Those selected also have communication skills to effectively interview potential infected and computer skills to collect data. *All figures correct at time of writing.

Is Cash Really King? We all believe that cash is the ultimate safe haven. When markets are volatile, our instinct is to sell out of stocks and keep our savings under the mattress, proverbial or otherwise. But such a strategy can cost you dearly – locking in losses and reducing returns means that even a modest £100,000 portfolio can end up losing out on as much as £50,000. Even though now would seem like a good time to invest, it is very difficult to judge the best time to take the plunge. Most people act too late and sell out close to or at the bottom of a market fall.

A recent survey showed that had investors piled into cash during the two biggest market falls in recent history, they would be a lot worse off than if they had done nothing at all. If preserving your savings is your main aim, now is not the time to be making decisions such as adding cash. You should always have chunks of your portfolio in cash and bonds. If you can tolerate market fluctuations then use this time to reconsider what you own, rather than fundamentally change how you invest. If this all seems a little daunting, then we are here to help and guide you to achieve the best outcome possible.

Why should you choose Seagate to advise you? All our advisers were trained at Lloyds Bank in the UK. We pride ourselves on putting our clients first. Unlike other advisers on the Costas we believe in regular six monthly reviews with our clients to ensure that their pension or investment is on track. Antonio Banderas cured of Covid After a hugely disappointing start to his seventh decade, Hollywood legend Antonio Banderas says he is now out of the woods – the Coronavirus he was diagnosed with on the very day of his 60th birthday is out of his system. The Goya-winner and Oscar nominee announced he had tested positive on 10th August, having been self-isolating in the previous few days awaiting the results of a PCR. He said he would have to spend his milestone birthday alone in a separate room rather than with friends and family the way he had intended to. Fans became extremely concerned, since in January 2017, he suffered a heart attack and had three stents fitted, then had another scare two months later when he started to experience stabbing chest pains whilst on his exercise bike. This would make him a highrisk case, although he said after the stent operation and thermoablation that his heart had not suffered any damage and was working properly, that he was in good health and was looking forward to getting back to filming.

He said in March 2017 that he had had cardiac arrhythmias for 'some time' before the attack, and that he had been 'very lucky'. When Banderas announced his Coronavirus diagnosis, he told fans he felt 'relatively well', but 'just a bit more tired than usual'. He said he planned to spend his quarantine 'reading, writing and resting'. In a recent post he tweeted: “After 21 days of disciplined isolation, I can say I have got over the Covid-19 infection. I'm cured. My thoughts are with all those who did not manage it and for all those who had a worse time than

I did. All the best and lots of strength to those who are still in the middle of the fight.” He illustrated the tweet with a black-and-white artistic shot of a man's legs kicking masses of Coronavirus-shaped balls in a busy street. Antonio Banderas has lived for the last four years in an undisclosed location in Surrey, UK, with his partner Nicole Kempel, 39, an investment consultant. He is reported to be studying design at the prestigious London-based Saint Martin's College.

We want our parents to stay together My parents argue a lot and it’s getting worse. Today my dad told my mum that he wanted a divorce. I am a 15-year-old girl and my sister is 8. Dad is extremely stressed as he works long hours and he is always saying he may lose his job. When he gets home, Mum keeps on at him to help around the house while she is at work. My mum works three days a week in a bar and she has been told her job may not last because it depends on the holidaymakers, and there haven't hardly been any customers this year. They don’t think we can hear their arguments half the time because they think they keep their voices down, but we do hear. My sister asks me to swear that they won’t divorce, as though I can do something about it! Yesterday a man rang Mum's phone - Dad answered and went mad accusing the man of chasing Mum. Mum said to him, 'it was just her Boss, and what did he care anyway, because he no longer felt like her husband, and was certainly no father to us', and now they are not speaking at all. Also, my Nan (Dad's mum) has been diagnosed with cancer - something else my sister and I found out by accident. We don't know what to do. First of all, I think you should tell your Mum that you and your sister have overheard their rows. We are living in testing times at the moment, but your parents need to pull together, if they are to stay together. Then speak to your Dad separately, tell him you've spoken to your mum, and let him know how upset your sister is about the prospect of them divorcing. Also, there's the knowledge that your Nan is not well and how upsetting that must be. The atmosphere in the house must be difficult for everyone, but things need to change in order for life to improve, so they need to talk to you both together. If that doesn't work, talk to a family member - perhaps your other Nan or Granddad to see if they can gently intervene, and get them to talk things through. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A 5,000yearold dagger found in Spain Archaeologists have discovered many tools left behind by prehistoric civilisations. Most of these are made of stone, but in Spain, researchers have recently found incredible weapons made of rock crystal. Dating back to at least 3000 BCE, these weapons include an incredible crystal dagger that would have taken enormous skill to carve. The find was discovered in the megalithic tomb of Montelirio tholos, which is located in southwestern Spain. This enormous site is made from large slate slabs and stretches over 143 feet. Researchers from the University of Granada, the University of Seville, and the Spanish Higher Research Council have now published their study of the crystal tools. In addition to the dagger, they found 25 arrowheads and cores for making the weapons. According to the study, rock crystal is commonly found in late prehistoric Iberian sites but is rarely studied in depth. To understand what purpose these special weapons may have had, we must first look at the context in which they were found. The remains of at least 25 people were found within

Montelirio tholos. Previous analysis has suggested that at least one male and several females died from ingesting poison. The remains of the women were seated in a circular fashion in a chamber next to the bones of someone who may have been the chief. The tombs also contained many grave goods, including “shrouds or clothes made of tens of thousands of perforated beads and decorated with amber,” as

well as ivory objects and fragments of gold blades. The crystal arrowheads were found together in a cluster, which leads the researchers to believe that they may have been a ritual offering. The dagger was found on its own in a separate chamber, “in association with an ivory hilt and sheath.” Measuring nearly 8.5 inches long, it's similar in shape to other daggers of the period. The difference being that those daggers were made of flint and

this one is formed from crystal. Since there were no crystal mines nearby, the materials for these items would have been sourced from far afield. This contributes to the idea that they were intended for an elite few who would have been able to afford to gather such materials and have them shaped into weapons. It's also interesting to note that none of the weapons were ascribed to a single individual, but appear to have been for collective use. “They probably represent funerary paraphernalia only accessible to the elite of this time period,” write the researchers. “On the other hand, rock crystal must have had a symbolic significance as a raw material invested with special meanings and connotations. The literature provides examples of societies in which rock crystal and quartz as raw materials symbolize vitality, magical powers, and a connection with ancestors.” Though we can't be certain of their exact purpose, the discovery and study of these weapons continue to give a fascinating insight into the prehistoric cultures that roamed the Earth over 5,000 years ago.

Spain to buy 30 million 'Oxford vaccines' against Covid19 Spain has just arranged to buy its first Covid-19 vaccines as part of a European Union-wide scheme. Scientists at Oxford University (UK) are at the clinical trials stage of the vaccine they are developing for the pharmaceutical company Astrazeneca, and which is said to be farther ahead than most other research projects in the same area. According to the European Commission, purchase and distribution of the Oxford vaccine will be spread out 'fairly' across the bloc, based upon the population size of each country and their epidemiological data. Spain is said to have bought 30 million doses of the vaccine 'off-plan', meaning there will be enough for two-thirds of the population. The European Commission's negotiating committee is, however, still in talks with other pharmaceutical companies which are developing alternative vaccines, in order to ensure that all the EU's inoculation needs – and those of third countries – can be met. Spain's health ministry says two of these negotiations are 'at a very advanced stage now' and that the companies involved are due to present an 'official proposal very shortly'.

This is as a result of Spain's having joined the European Vaccine Strategy in July – a scheme which aims to establish a unique continent-wide position that guarantees universal and fair access to the vaccine to protect the bulk of the population. Astrazeneca is currently testing the Oxford vaccine on patients

worldwide for safety and efficiency, involving around 10,000 volunteers. The Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical firm says it is aiming to have 100 million vaccine doses ready for the USA, another 100 million for the European Union and 30 million for the UK by the

end of the year. This will mean roughly one in five residents in the EU-27 will be able to be inoculated, based upon an estimated total headcount of 447 million, according to World Bank statistics. If, by September, the definitive results of the trials and testing are positive, Astrazeneca calculates it would be able to reach a production of 2.1 billion vaccines, and is researching how it could increase this further. “To accelerate the process, we have agreed to transfer the technology to other countries, which have now started to produce the vaccine for trials,” the firm says. The first countries to sign up to the European Vaccine Strategy were Germany, France, Italy and The Netherlands, although all 27 member States are able to do so. “Many countries worldwide already have their vaccine guaranteed, but not Europe yet,” German health minister Jens Spahn said back in June. “The swift coordination of a group of member States will offer added value to all EU citizens in the face of this crisis. “Together with the European Commission, we want to be even quicker and stronger in future negotiations.”

July hotel figures better than expected Hotel occupation has been better than expected across Spain for July, thanks to Spaniards and expats opting to take their holidays in Spain rather than travelling abroad.

of residents in Spain – Spaniards and other nationalities – occupied hotel rooms in July, or a total of 7.4 million in total. Holidaymakers from abroad staying in Spanish hotels totalled 4.1 million.

And despite the UK's two-week quarantine requirements for travellers from Spain, including returning holidaymakers, and restrictions imposed by other European nations, a total of 15.2 percent hotel guests in July were from Britain and 25.1 percent were from Germany.

This overall figure of 11.5 million in the month of July represented a fall of 73.4 percent across the board based upon numbers from last year, but is still equivalent to a quarter of the population of Spain and shows that fears of 'zero tourism' in summer 2020 are not entirely founded.

Whilst this is still considerably lower than in a 'normal' year, it shows the desire to get to Spain in summer remains widespread in northern Europe and bodes well for future seasons when the pandemic is finally under control and everyone free to spend time abroad again.

And July's figures were a vast improvement on April, when no hotel rooms at all were occupied except by those resorts which had offered their rooms to hospitals to use for patients, or for hospital workers who opted to live away from home so as not to risk infecting their families.

Although hotel guests coming from France, The Netherlands and Belgium fell drastically, still between two and three in 10 of the usual numbers opted to spend their holidays in Spain.

After April's 100 percent fall, easing of restrictions meant May saw a 99.2 percent based upon figures from 2019, and June, 95.1 percent, as the country moved through its four 'phases' of reopening after lockdown.

These figures do not count expatriates in Spain originally from these countries, but refer exclusively to those who have journeyed directly from them and may include residents in them of different nationalities altogether. Around 50 percent of the usual numbers

About 14.3 percent of the usual numbers of holidaymakers from abroad came over to Spain in July to stay in hotels, according to the National Institute for Statistics (INE). Some of the 73.4 percent reduction in

hotel stays was due to 27.5 percent of the total nationwide opting not to open this summer. A total of 12,068 hotel complexes, or 62.5 percent of all those in Spain, were operating in July, compared with 5,896 in June, or just under half. Also, this July has seen the number of rooms available reduced to just over a million, or 52.7 percent of the usual amount for this month. Given the reduced availability, the reduction in guest numbers appears less drastic than it would be if this was based upon all hotel complexes in the country being open to full capacity, and suggests that those which did open for business in July may have had a better summer so far than expected. Tourism industry traders are crossing their fingers that, once the pandemic is under control and fewer restrictions apply or natural caution among travellers, those who were unable, or decided not, to take a holiday in Spain this summer will want to make up for lost time and 'push the boat out' in 2021 or 2022 – in much the same way as retailers, bars and restaurants found after lockdown was declared over and everyone had a much greater appreciation of simple 'freedoms' such as being able to go out for dinner or for a drink.

Based upon the notion that, as long as an office employee has access to internet and a computer, he or she can work anywhere in the world, UK-based property insurer CIA Landlord carried out a survey to see which European cities Brits would choose to live in if they could carry on with their jobs from home. The answers were based upon various criteria, but these included being able to make their money go further and increase their savings if they were still earning in pounds sterling - and Madrid has come out top. Its points in favour cover regular, cheap flights to and from various destinations in the UK, a wide range of restaurants and bars with great food at a low cost, and plenty to do off duty including arts and entertainment, culture, shopping and tourism. The only downside to Madrid, among those surveyed, was the cost of rent – the average tenant in Spain's capital pays around €990 a month, a price that can drop to a third or even less out in the provinces, even in densely-populated,

lively coastal areas. Buying property in Madrid or anywhere in Spain continues to be a much cheaper option than renting, and although tenancies are on the increase, the country has a far greater culture of owner-occupancy than the European average, with the most recent figures showing that well above 80 percent of Spanish homes are lived in by people who either own them outright or have a mortgage on them. If cost of living was the only consideration, the outright winner would have been the Albanian capital of Tirana, where the average monthly rental is £270 (about €325) and a one-way public transport ticket is about £0.30 (€0.36), but other criteria were also perceived as important and Tirana ended up fourth on the list. This said, quality, good-sized rentals in large, bustling towns, coastal hotspots and provincial capital cities in Spain – let alone those in more remote areas – are easy to find for far less than the Tirana average.

Not good, says Sanchez Upon his return from an almost threeweek holiday, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez delivered his first address to the nation since Spain became the worst-affected European country in terms of per capita COVID-19 contagion. “The data isn’t good. The situation is worrisome,” Sanchez said. “But we can’t allow the pandemic to take over our

lives again. We won’t allow it to happen.” He said he will leave the power to make public health decisions with the country’s 19 regional governments, but offered 2,000 military troops to help with contact tracing and said he would support regional governments if they wanted to declare localized states of emergency.

Prior to the central government meeting with regional authorities to discuss the back-to-school plan, Sanchez said he expects schools to reopen nationwide within the coming weeks.

The Harvard Global Health Institute recommends not reopening schools until local contagion falls below 25 cases per 100,000 over the last seven days. Only one Spanish region meets that threshold.

“The school year should begin normally, it’s the roadmap and there is no alternative,” he said, adding that they should do so safely.

The national average is 90 cases per 100,000 over the last week. In Madrid, the worst-affected region, that number is 213.

Expert sleep tips We get it, life is busy. but here’s something you should know: sleep used to be considered one of the three pillars of health and wellness, along with diet and exercise. Today, though, research points to sleep being the foundation to living a better life. Here, we look at what to focus on in order to get the rest you need. Block out noise You may not recall the racket caused by the midnight rubbish pickup, but your body probably does. Even if you don’t wake up, noise can disrupt your slumber and cause restlessness, increased heart rate and blood pressure, and changes in breathing patterns. These interruptions can lead to fragmented sleep, which makes it harder to reach the deeper, more restorative stages. Earplugs are a great way to avoid disturbances. They mold to the shape of your ear canal, filtering out noise almost completely. Another idea: Consider buying a fabric headboard or a plush rug to help minimise noises. Sniff n Wiff Creating a bedtime ritual that includes diffusing (a process of dispersing) essential oils 30 minutes before hitting the sack is a simple and effective way to cue the body to rest. Not only are there certain scents that encourage drowsiness, but the very act of setting up a routine helps signal to your brain that it’s time to start shutting off. Panton suggests this blend for ultimate rest: seven drops of lavender, four drops of frankincense, four drops of cedarwood,

and two drops of bergamot. Stay chilled Body temperature regularly fluctuates throughout the day - it’s usually at its highest in the afternoon and lowest in the early a.m. So if your room is hot, your body will work all night to cool down and if you’re sweating, you’re more likely to wake up. The sweet spot: 65 degrees, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Using a thermostat can help you keep the temperature just right. Fresh air Room stuffiness can hike nasal congestion and hinder your ability to breathe while you doze. Per a study in the journal Indoor Air, people who kept their window open overnight felt more alert the next morning than they did when it had been kept closed. If you live in a city and opening your window exposes you to noise, crack it open for 15 minutes during the day instead. No windows? No problem. Invest in a plant like a peace lily, which naturally purifies air. Ambient lighting Not only does light send “stay awake” alerts to the brain, it also has an effect on circadian rhythm, which controls your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle. Brightness also stops the production of melatonin (the tired hormone), suppressing your sleep signal. While you likely kill the lights before you get in bed, you actually need to dim them much sooner. Switch from overhead lights to lamps around dinnertime to help your body wind down.

Chocs away Whether it’s ice cream, brownies, cookies, or your favourite bar - all cocoa contains caffeine. Which means your nightly choc habit could be costing you precious z’s. If you want to indulge your sweet tooth, consider yogurt (high in muscle-relaxing magnesium) topped with fresh cherries (which contain melatonin). Pass on the booze Alcohol is a double-edged sword. Yes, that nightcap might initially help you doze off, but don’t be fooled - it reduces sleep quality. That’s because while booze is linked to increasing

certain sleepy feelings, it also causes you to wake up repeatedly, interfering with restorative sleep. Instead of pouring yourself a glass right before you hit the hay, take your last sips two hours earlier. Put down your phone In theory, a feature like Apple’s Night Shift is supposed to help reduce the impact of melatonin suppression (a.k.a. that wired feeling you get from staring at your phone) by enabling users to make screen light “more warm.” However, a study in the journal Lighting Research & Technology showed that changing screen colour alone does not

completely eliminate the impact on melatonin levels. Unfortunately, scrolling yourself to sleep is a bad idea no matter how you look at it. Just as with alcohol, it’s suggested that you try to avoid staring at any screen one to two hours before bedtime. Mindful brushing Peppermint toothpaste and mouthwash might help bad breath in the morning, but it should be avoided at night. Minty flavours keep us alert. Instead, opt for something milder, such as some of the herb-flavoured toothpastes that are on the market that will make you feel clean and calm.

Harnessing your metabolism Your metabolism is a complex system. It determines how quickly and efficiently your body burns calories and how much you can eat in a day without putting on weight. Scientists are still gaining new insight into the factors that make your metabolism run. But they know for sure that becoming a healthier, stronger person can fire yours up - prolonging good health, improving mood, slowing the effects of aging, and maybe even helping you lose some weight along the way. Some parts of your metabolism are beyond your control. Although many of us talk about “metabolism” as if it’s a single bodily process, there are actually three types, each of which expends energy (or calories) at a different rate. Your resting metabolic rate determines the amount of energy your organs use to stay functional when you’re just sitting around. It makes up the largest piece of the metabolism pie (around 60 to 75 percent) on a regular workday with minimal activity, and there’s very little you can do about it. In fact, contrary to what you may have heard, thin people don’t have faster resting metabolic rates. The bigger you are - regardless of whether that weight comes from muscle or fat - the higher your resting metabolic rate will be. Your active metabolism which accounts for about 10 to 15 percent of the calories you burn in a day - dictates the energy you use up when you’re walking, running, exercising, even fidgeting (for some people). This is the type you have more control over, to

some degree, since the more you move, the more calories you burn. Finally, there’s diet-induced thermogenesis - the energy your body uses to consume and digest food. Yep, you get a bonus burn - 8 to 12 percent of your daily calorie use for eating! TRY THIS TRICK: Believe it or not, spicy food and green tea can fire up dietinduced thermogenesis a bit. So brew some tea or pour a little hot sauce on dinner. Your muscles are in charge. A pound of muscle burns seven to 10 calories a day, while a pound of fat burns just two or three. We all lose muscle as we age, starting in our 20s, and as it vanishes, so does our calorie-burning power. By your 70s, your resting metabolism may be 15 percent slower than it was in your 20s. That’s 15 percent less food you can eat without gaining weight. While building new muscle can help counteract this trend, it’s even more important to engage the muscle you already have. Every time you challenge your muscles by strength training, they go through a breakdown-and-repair process, or remodelling. This means you burn calories while working out and continue to burn them after you put the weights away. TRY THIS TRICK: Do two or three 20minute sessions of resistance training (12 to 20 sets of exercises) each week. In three months, your resting metabolism will be about 6 percent faster. When you exercise, focus on major muscle groups. And don’t shy away from heavy weights. Start with one that’s about half as heavy

as the largest weight you can lift. As you become more proficient, switch to weights that are 60 to 75 percent of your maximum lift. A lack of protein can slow your metabolism. If you’re not already on the protein bandwagon, get on board. Your body needs amino acids - the building blocks of protein - to stay functional. If you don’t eat a diet rich enough in them, your body’s forced to tap your muscles, which have a great reservoir. When you lose valuable muscle, your resting metabolism pays the price. TRY THIS TRICK: Make sure you’re putting protein in every meal and snack starting the day with 15 grams (about two eggs) is a great idea. And don’t overlook whey, one of two proteins found in milk. It’s rich in the amino acids muscles thirst for and can aid recovery after workouts. Dieting is the enemy. Any weight-loss diet - yes, even one that seems sensible - will leave your metabolism slower than it was when you weighed more. That’s partly because each time you shed pounds, you lose fat and muscle, but when you ditch your diet and regain weight, the pounds come back as fat. And since smaller people have slower metabolisms than bigger people, you’ll have to eat even fewer calories than you did at the start of your diet to maintain your new weight. TRY THIS TRICK: If your goal is to lose a significant amount of weight, take it slow. It’s best to lose about 10 percent of

your body weight, maintain that weight for three to six months, then lose more if you desire. Also, never eat fewer calories than

your resting metabolism requires. The easiest way to determine that magic number: Take your body weight in pounds and multiply by 10.

Ultraprocessed foods to throw out right now An alarming study published in the journal BMJ Open revealed that 60 percent of calories in the average daily diet comes from "ultra-processed" foods, which are pretty much exactly what they sound like: processed foods that contain additives—like hydrogenated oils, artificial flavours, and emulsifiers - with long names you don't recognise. The researchers also found that these ultra-processed foods account for 90 percent of the added sugar we consume, increasing our risk for obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. Yikes. Luckily, creating homemade versions of your favourite treats is easier than you might think. And you don't need to swear off conveniently-packaged snacks altogether. You just need to read the labels carefully: if the ingredient list looks like a recipe you could have made in your own kitchen, you're on the right track. The worst culprits: Crisps The most notorious offenders are brands that contain artificial and colours, flavours, preservatives – so anything neon-orange is out. Your best bet is a basic kettle chip with just

ingredients: simple three potatoes, olive or sunflower oil, and salt. Other good options include organic corn chips and popcorn, which is low in calories, high in fibre, and packed with antioxidants. Or better yet, go the DIY route. Baked kale chips are easy to make, as are ovenroasted sweet potato chips. Packaged snack cakes Those plastic-wrapped cakes that seem to last forever in your pantry are packed with sugar and preservatives (hence their longevity). Whipping up your own sweet treats is a better option. You can use a nutrientrich alternative to white flour, such as chickpea or almond flour. Try replacing half of the sugar in the recipe with pureed fruit (mashed bananas and date paste both work well); and swapping each tablespoon of butter with a half tablespoon of avocado. Certain breads You already know to avoid ultraprocessed white bread in favour of fibre-rich whole grain breads that offer a slew of good-for-you perks. But picking the right loaf can be tricky because even healthy-seeming varieties can contain additives. Bread is one of

those foods where reading the ingredient list is really very important. Look for a whole grain or gluten-free, or even grain-free bread that doesn't have any artificial additives or preservatives. Diet fizzy drinks Besides the fact that diet drinks have zero nutritional value, they contain artificial sweeteners like and saccharin, aspartame, sucralose, and are linked to headaches, depression, and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. If you can't get used to plain old H2O, opt for sparkling or flavoured water. Frozen pizza Sadly, there doesn't seem to be a minimally-processed version of pre-made pizza. The best alternative is making your own. Pre-made dough is an allowable cheat, especially if loaded with lean proteins and veggies. Sweets Most brands contain high fructose syrup and artificial flavours. But the good news, is there are better options out there. Seventy percent dark chocolate is a great alternative to sweets or try gummi fruits made with real fruit juice.

Amazing pooch is taught to fetch owner's ChickfilA from restaurant An amazing dog has been taught to collect her owner's Chick-fil-A from the restaurant and bring it back to the car. Ellie the golden retriever was filmed last week bounding over to collect a bag of fried chicken for her owner, Nick, in the parking lot of the fast-food chain in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. A server at the restaurant is seen wearing a mask and handing over the meal for a curbside delivery - brought in to help business run smoother with social distancing amid the pandemic. Ellie takes the handle of the paper bag in her mouth and pads back over to her owner who gratefully receives his order

beside his car. The restaurant's Facebook post said: 'Using our mobile app for curbside delivery has never been more fun or easy. Just ask Ellie. She loves running to meet the Team Member delivering her food and carrying it back to her owner, Nick, who waits in their

curbside space. "It's Ellie's favourite thing to do," said Nick. 'It's our favourite thing to do to serve yummy food to happy Guests - four-legged Guests included! Place your mobile curbside order today and make your favorite part of the day getting your Chick-fil-A just like Ellie!' The post has been shared more than 26,000 times and has attracted more than 10,000 comments. Patti Brown wrote: 'I love that! My dog would eat it before returning to me!!' Mint KitKat Chunky Bars KitKat Chunky bars are the best. Admittedly, KitKat purists might say that the original KitKat is the best, but there’s just something about a MASSIVE KitKat that brings great joy to our lives. Plus, the amount of different flavours KitKat Chunkies come in is mind-blowing. Including the latest one that’s made a very welcome return to shops: mint. Mint KitKat Chunky bars have been spotted in a number of shops across the UK; much to the joy of many a shopper and are

due to be rolled out across Europe. Back in July, KitKat announced that it was bringing back the mint Chunkies, as well as cookie dough flavoured KitKat Chunkies. But both are only around for a limited time, so move fast, people. At the time, Sascha Macchi, brand manager for KitKat, said “We know KitKat fans love the opportunity to rediscover limited-edition flavours and this is why we are bringing back two huge favourites this year.

“As a nation, we cannot get enough of cookie dough, so we are expecting consumers to go wild for the return of KitKat Chunky Cookie Dough. “The UK is also a huge fan of minty treats, so we expect KitKat Chunky Mint to be flying off the shelves as soon as it leaves our production line in York. “What’s more, it’s available for a limited time only, so we urge fans to get theirs quick!” So what are you waiting for – get moving already!?

Things you never knew about McDonald’s Whether we're talking about beautiful Big Macs, fabulous Fillet O' Fish or magnificent McFlurries, there's no denying it - McDonald's is iconic. I mean, name a more recognisable symbol than those golden arches (more on that later). With that in mind, here are 16 facts about our precious McDonald's that will blow your mind. Or at least make you drop your fries.... 1. Big Mac secret sauce is no longer a secret McDonald's managed to keep the Big Mac sauce recipe a secret until it allegedly leaked online in 2017. If you want to make the sauce at home you'll just need soybean oil, pickle relish, vinegar, egg yolks, onion powder, sugar, and mustard seed. Don't ask about quantities, mind you... 2. You will not get served at a drivethru if you turn up on horseback In 2013, a woman on a horse attempted to order McDonald's at a Manchester drive-thru. She was turned away by employees and fined. So instead of ordering at the drive-thru, she took her horse into the restaurant, where her mighty steed did some pooping all over the floor. Sort-of serves them right in a way. 3. You also can't just walk through a drive-thru either “We have a policy that forbids us from serving people who are not in a ‘motorised vehicle’ in [the] drive-thru because it can be unsafe,” one employee admitted on Reddit. “Bicycles, electric scooters, and pedestrians cannot be

served.” Or horses, obviously.

donned a Maccy D name badge. 11. One in eight Americans have worked in McDonald's It's not just celebs getting their hair nets on - it's estimated that, seeing as there are over 14,000 McDonald's in America, one in eight Americans have done a stint working there.

4. Justin Timberlake got paid A LOT for his 'Ba-da-ba-ba-bah. I'm lovin' it' song McDonald’s paid Justin Timberlake a whopping $6million to sing those three words for its advertising campaign. The fast-food chain also sponsored a 35-city European tour for Mr Trousersnake. 5. McDonald's actually started out as a hot dog restaurant called Airdrome Back in the 1930s, brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald took out a $5,000 loan and started the worldwide corporation which we know today as McDonald’s. But their very first restaurant was a hot dog place in Monrovia, California, and it was called the Airdrome. In 1940, they moved their restaurant to San Bernardino, California, and changed its name to McDonald’s Barbecue. In 1948, it was re-branded as a place for burgers and fries. 6. The oldest McDonald's in operation still has its original branding The restaurant in Downey, California, was the fourth McDonald's to open and is still going today. It opened its doors for the first time in 1953. 7. Ronald McDonald wasn't always the mascot Originally, the McDonald's mascot was a sweet little chef named Speedee. But after people started confusing him with Alka-Seltzer's mascot Speedy, Ronald and his big red wig turned up.

12. There are some countries where you won't find a McDonald's You won't find the Golden Arches in Ghana, Barbados, Montenegro, Jamaica, Bolivia, North Korea, Iceland, Macedonia, Iran or Bermuda. You can still find Speedee branding in some of the oldest McDonald's restaurants, like the one in Downey. 8. And the original Ronald McDonald was absolutely terrifying He was played by weatherman Willard Scott and he was the stuff of cheeseburger-induced nightmares. 9. The Founder is based on the true story of McDonald's Michael Keaton stars in 2016's The Founder as milkshake machine salesman Ray Kroc. He was delivering milkshake mixers to McDonald's in 1954, when he convinced owners Richard and Maurice to give him the franchising rights to the restaurants. 10. Quite a few celebrities have worked at McDonald's at one time or another Rachel McAdams, Pink, Shania Twain and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos have all

13. Drive-thrus were originally invented because of the army McDonald’s first drive-thru opened in 1975 in Sierra Vista, Arizona. It was near a military base, and soldiers weren't allowed to leave their cars while wearing fatigues, so the drive-thru was invented

so they could still get their hands on hamburgers. 14. The Golden Arches are the most recognisable symbol in the world They're believed to be more recognisable than the cross. 15. There's one set of arches in the world that are turquoise The McDonald’s in Sedona, Arizona, has turquoise arches because the restaurant needed to be more in keeping with the distinct desert environment. Turquoise was chosen to echo the sky, and the building itself is more of an orangey red colour to resemble the surrounding terrain. 16. There are only four McNugget shapes Keep an eye out for the boot, the bone, the ball, and the bell next time you tuck into your McNuggets.

Nigella’s roast dinner tip Roast dinners are the best, and we won’t be told otherwise. The crispy roast potatoes, the fluffy Yorkshire puddings, the moreish gravy, and the perfectly cooked meat. Jeez, Roast dinners even make vegetables fun! But boy, is cooking and serving a roast dinner for your entire family stressful. The trickiest thing about it is the timings – trying to get everything cooked and ready at the same time takes a genius, quite honestly. But Nigella Lawson has a super-simple trick that will make your Sunday lunches 100 times easier and far, far less stressful. In her final column for The Sunday Times Styles, the TV chef and cookbook author revealed that she never worries about making sure all the food is piping hot when serving. As long as the gravy’s hot and your plates have been warmed,

it’s not the end of the world if your roasties have been sat on the side for a while; cooling down. “You really don't have to hare about the kitchen trying to make sure everything is going to be ready at the same time. It's impossible,” she writes. “Anyway, the Italians eat much of their food at an agreeable warm-ish room temperature, and it's all the better for it.” She adds, “All you have to do is make sure the gravy is hot and the plates are warm (which, frankly, means no more than leaving them in a washing-up bowl filled with water for 10 minutes.” Nigella says if you try and have everything ready at the exact same time, you’ll be dealing with an “oven management scheduling nightmare.” Bow down to Queen Nigella.

Rare whisky is flavour of the month for investors Whisky lovers are being offered the chance to splash out on some of the world’s rarest bottles of their preferred tipple in Sotheby’s largest online spirits auction yet. Running for one week until 1st September, the Sotheby’s event comprises 267 lots with a combined pre-sale estimate in excess of £850,000. From The Macallan’s most sought-after releases to an array of rare Italian import Scotch, including a 1970 Samaroli Laphroaig, the auction features some of the rarest whiskies ever to go under the hammer. Sotheby’s spirits specialist Jonny Fowle said: “The quality and variety of bottles offered in this sale are a testament both to the strength of the current whisky market and of our success in developing our online auction format throughout 2020.” Three bottles of Laphroaig Samaroli 16-Year-Old 1970 will be sold separately, with an estimate of between £9,000 and £13,000. This whisky received a score of 95 points from whisky expert Serge Valentin, one of the highest ratings he has ever given. Emmanuel Dron, Sotheby’s whisky consultant and owner of The Auld Alliance whisky bar, said: “Silvano Samaroli’s bottles are among the most legendary ever produced and this 1970 Laphroaig is undoubtedly my numberone whisky of all time. It is so rare to see

three bottles of this whisky in a single auction.” Japanese whiskies The sale will also feature a selection of rare Japanese whiskies, including 28 Karuizawa lots with a combined pre-sale estimate of £79,300 to £104,100. The rare bottles are hitting the market less than six months after Sotheby’s set the record for the most valuable Japanese whisky ever sold, with a Karuizawa 1960 achieving £363,000 in London. Health benefits of watermelon It’s summer in Spain and so watermelons are everywhere! Watermelon is a summertime staple, and truly one of the most beautiful, delicious, and fun fruits to enjoy. Fortunately it’s also incredibly good for you. Here are just some of the things to know... Watermelon keeps you hydrated Water isn’t in this fruit’s name by chance. One cup of watermelon contains five ounces of water (about the size of a yogurt container). Consuming an adequate amount of fluid - including from water-rich foods - supports circulation, skin health, and digestion. It also helps regulate body temperature, organ and joint function, metabolism, appetite, and waste elimination. It boasts key nutrients and few calories Watermelon is lower in calories and sugar than you may think. One cup of watermelon provides 45 calories from 11 grams of carbohydrate, 9 grams of which are naturally occurring sugar. But that natural sweetness is bundled with vitamins A and C, which support immune function and skin health, in addition to smaller amounts of potassium, magnesium, B vitamins, and health-protective antioxidants. Watermelon helps lower blood pressure and improve circulation L-citrulline, a natural substance in watermelon (particularly in the white part of the rind), has been shown to

improve artery function and lower blood pressure by helping blood vessels relax, which opens up circulation. L-citrulline’s impact on blood flow is also the reason watermelon has been deemed “nature’s Viagra”. Research also shows that L-citrulline may improve muscle oxygenation and athletic performance during endurance exercise.

Researchers found that watermelon promoted greater satiety than the cookies, and that satiety (diminished hunger, greater fullness, and a reduced desire to eat) lasted up to 90 minutes after eating. Additionally, the watermelon eaters lost weight, reduced their waist-to-hip ratios and blood pressure levels, and improved their antioxidant status and blood lipids.

It reduces muscle soreness In one study, athletes who consumed 16 ounces of watermelon juice an hour before exercise experienced reduced muscle soreness and a quicker heart rate recovery compared to those who received a placebo drink.

It helps defend against disease Watermelon is one of the best sources of lycopene, an antioxidant known to combat oxidative stress, which occurs when there is an imbalance between the production of cell-damaging free radicals and the body's ability to counter their harmful effects. The protection lycopene provides reduces the risk of chronic diseases, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer, as well as neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. For the most lycopene, opt for traditional pink flesh watermelon, which packs much more of the antioxidant compared to yellow and orange varieties.

It can lead to healthy weight management Watermelon may help support healthy weight management when it’s consumed in place of a processed sweet snack. A 2019 study from San Diego State University looked at satiety and weight changes after a four-week intervention in overweight and obese adults. During the study, one group was asked to consume two cups of fresh watermelon daily, while a second group ate low-fat cookies that had the same number of calories as the watermelon. Participants were allowed to consume their respective snacks any time of day, during one or multiple sittings, or either alone or in combination with other foods.

How to choose and store a ripe watermelon The trick to choosing a ripe watermelon is to look for a yellow or cream-colored splotch or ground spot - the fruit’s key sign of peak ripeness. It should also feel heavy when you pick it up, since over 90% of a ripe watermelon is indeed water. To retain the most antioxidants - up to a 139%

difference, according to one study store your watermelon at room temperature. Just be sure to wash the melon before you slice it, to prevent bacteria from being transferred from the surface to the edible fruit. Ways to enjoy this delicious fruit Fresh watermelon is amazing as is,

but it can also be incorporated into both sweet and savoury recipes. Skewer watermelon and lime juicecoated avocado chunks for a colourful snack or appetizer, served raw or grilled. Make a batch of watermelon salsa by combining the chopped fruit with cucumber, red onion, jalapeno, cilantro, and lime juice.

If You Have 1 Minute… Trigger a Pressure Point Turns out, your body has a stressrelease button. Between the tendons, two or three finger widths above the centre of your inner wrist is a point called pericardium 6. Research shows that using your finger to apply pressure to PC6 has a calming effect on the central nervous system. Balance Your Breath Experts say that slowing down your breathing can get you out of “fight or flight,” which can help lower the stress hormone cortisol. According to those in the know there is a quick exercise to help you relax. Inhale and exhale through your nose for counts of five in and out. Do this for a full minute, and you will start to feel the tension leave your body. If You Have 5 Minutes… Pop a Mint When you get worked up, your brain goes into default mode network (DMN), which is associated with depression and repetitive rumination. In DMN, the brain is wired to bring up undone tasks, which can take you away from .enjoying the moment. However, sucking on a mint activates your task-positive network (TPN), which turns off DMN. Give Yourself a Hug But not just any ordinary hug - a butterfly hug! Here’s how: Place your right hand on your left shoulder, and cross your left hand over to touch your right shoulder. Then, repeatedly tap one hand after another for five minutes. Experts believe that bilateral stimulation stimulation on both sides of the body produces a physiological relaxation response, sort of like when you rock a baby to sleep.

Clear The Clutter Chaotic environments create more stress. Taking a few minutes to clean up can automatically make you feel better. The benefit of tidying is actually twofold. We already know that an organized area can elicit feelings of control and clarity. But research also shows that completing tasks with your hands can have a soothing, therapeutic impact on the brain. When you engage your senses, like touch, it takes you out of your stressedout mind and has a meditative effect. That said, the thought of tackling a large mess can be overwhelming, so start small by throwing out trash or cleaning crumbs off your desk. If You Have 10 Minutes… Think Good Thoughts Remember that amazing vacation you took to Turks and Caicos? How about that blissful vibe you felt on your wedding day? When you’re stressed, imagining yourself in a safe, happy place can be very helpful. Conjuring up happy memories can help you calm down from negative emotions. Having a hard time getting your mind there? Whip out your phone and scroll through photos. This can help you to stop thinking about the things that may be causing your stress and will bring you back to a time you felt grounded and relaxed. Sip on This That jittery feeling you get when you’re anxious - your central nervous system may be to blame. That’s because your CNS can become over-stimulated when the body tries to process chronic or unrelenting stress. Try lemon-balm or passionflower tea: Both are thought to calm the central nervous system. What’s more, the act of stopping what you’re doing to perform a ritual - like making tea - can also help take you out of your stress spiral.

Stop your siesta Having a long nap every day could increase your risk of death by 30 per cent, a new study has found. Researchers from Guangzhou Medical University, China, warned against indulging in a snooze on a regular basis, as it could have farreaching health consequences. The team of scientists assessed the relationship between napping and the risks of all-cause death and cardiovascular disease, and discovered that napping for longer than 60 minutes could potentially prove fatal. "A common view is that napping improves performance and counteracts the negative consequences of 'sleep debt'. Our study challenges these widely held opinions," study author Dr. Zhe Pan explained. They analysed more than 313,000 participants from more than 20 studies, and found that naps for longer than an hour were

SALE

associated with a 30 per cent greater risk of all-cause death, and 34 per cent increase in the likelihood of developing cardiovascular disease, compared to no napping. However, long naps were only linked to an elevated risk of death in those who slept more than six hours a night. Naps of any length were associated with a 19 per cent increase in all-cause death, with women at greater risk than men.

Regular snoozing, for less than 60 minutes, was not considered to be linked to developing cardiovascular disease, and they suggested that naps of around 30 to 45 minutes could improve heart health in those who don't sleep well at night. "If you want to take a siesta, our study indicates it's safest to keep it under an hour. For those of us not in the habit of a daytime slumber, there is no convincing evidence to start," Dr. Pan concluded.

Back to School Final Figures Released It´s just about time to go back to school, which means that there will be an increase in cars on the roads at certain times of day, the infamous “school run”, and more vulnerable road users out and about. If you are taking children in the car, there are a few things you must remember, so the school run serves as a timely reminder. Children under 1.35 metres in height are not allowed in the front seats and must sit in the back. The only exceptions are if there are no rear seats, such as a sports car, or if the seats are already occupied by other children. All occupants must be secured in the vehicle, by means of a seat belt, or specially designed retention system suitable for them, that includes children. Those of a younger age must have a suitable seat which must be secured.

pressed. You should also check the locking mechanism on the seat belt itself by pulling sharply on the belt, simulating a pull under pressure. These checks are all carried out during the ITV inspection but as failures can occur at any time, it is important that you check them regularly yourself. When you arrive at the school drop off point, remember that the laws still apply and you´re not allowed to double-park, block entrances, or park in an illegal place with your hazard lights on just because you are dropping off your children for school. Doing this creates an additional hazard and puts the children at risk.

Another important point to remember is that all vehicle occupants must wear a seat belt. Some cars only have two seat belts at the back. In this case, only two passengers can be carried. A seat belt is required for all occupants. All objects must also be secure in the vehicle. That not only means their school bags, lunchboxes, and football kit, but also that school project they have to take in, nearer the end of term.

You must choose a safe, convenient, and legal place to drop off your children. Where possible, ensure that they exit the vehicle on the pavement side, still warning them to be aware of their surroundings before opening the door. They may hit a pedestrian, item of street furniture, or another object, so they should be taught to be aware and alert before opening the door. If they must leave on the roadside, vigilance is even more important, they must check it is totally safe before opening the door and must move to the pavement as soon as possible.

It is a good idea to test the seat belts in your vehicle on a regular basis. Make sure the clasp clicks securely in the holder, that it locks in place and doesn´t pull out under pressure, whilst making sure it does open when the release button is

Remember, when you are about to pull away, pay extra attention to your surroundings too, including rigorous checks of your blind spots, as there could be children or other road users appearing from anywhere.

Last year 1,755 people lost their lives in traffic accidents, according to the final balance from the General Directorate of Traffic. This figure includes people who died on interurban and urban roads during the 30 days after the accident occurred. The number of deceased people decreased by 3% compared to 2018, although the evolution has been very different inside and outside the cities. On urban roads, there were 519 deaths, 6% more than in 2018. On the contrary, on interurban roads there were 1,236 deaths, 6% less than in 2018, although here too differences can be observed between conventional roads, where deaths decreased by 10%, and highways which registered an increase of 5%. The number of people killed on conventional roads for the first time was below 900 victims. It should be remembered that on January 29, 2019, the reduction of the speed limit from 100kilometres per hour to 90kilometres per hour came into effect on the entire network of conventional roads. Cities accounted for 30% of all deaths, the highest percentage since records are available. The mortality rate in 2019 stood at 37 deaths per million inhabitants, ahead of Austria (46), France (48), Italy (55), Belgium (56) and Portugal (61). The average rate for the countries of the European Union stood at 51. The value of 37 is the objective indicated in the Road Safety Strategy 2011-2020 as the maximum mortality rate in 2020. Even so, 5 people die a day in traffic accidents, which shows that

there is still a long way to go. Overview of the accident rate Means of travel. The largest increases in accidents occurred among cyclists (80 deaths in 2019, compared to 58 in 2018) and motorcyclists (466 deaths, including mopeds, 11% more than in 2018), albeit for different reasons: while the increase in cyclists who died were concentrated on urban roads (32 deaths in 2019, compared to 15 in 2018), motorcyclists did so on interurban roads (318 deaths in 2019, compared to 276 in 2018). The death toll for motorcyclists is the highest since 2010, while the number of cyclists is the highest since 2007. Among the rest of the means of travel,

the 12% reduction in the number of deaths in passenger cars stands out. For their part, 381 pedestrians died in 2019, compared to 386 in 2018. Together, vulnerable users (pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists) account for more than half of the deaths for the first time (specifically, 53%). Age. People aged 65 and over, who make up 19% of the population, accounted for 28% of the fatalities. It is worth highlighting the reductions that have occurred in the age group between 15 and 44 years, and the increases registered in the age group between 45 and 64 years. Interurban roads. There has been a 10% reduction in fatalities on conventional roads. The most frequent fatal accidents on this type of road are still exits (41% of the people killed) and head-on collisions (27%). On interurban roads, the increase in the accident rate of motorcyclists stands out, which accounted for 1 out of every 4 people killed. Together, vulnerable users account for 40% of the fatalities on interurban roads. The fatalities in passenger cars decreased by 13%, standing at 579 deaths. Urban roads. Vulnerable users accounted for 82% of the deceased persons, distributed as follows: 247 pedestrians, 32 cyclists, and 148 motorcyclists (including mopeds). In all

cases, there were increases in 2019 compared to 2018. It should be noted that 70% of the deceased pedestrians are 65 years of age or older, highlighting the increase from the age of 75, a population that has gone from 104 deaths in 2018 to 134 in 2019. Concurrent factors. For the fourth consecutive year, distractions were the most frequent factor in fatal accidents (they were present in 28%), followed by alcohol consumption (present in 24%) and speed (present in 23%). Autonomous communities. Aragon, Principality of Asturias, Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Catalonia, Extremadura, Galicia, Region of Murcia, ComunidadForal de

Navarra and Comunitat Valenciana, are the communities that reduced the number of deaths in car accidents compared to the previous year. There was also a decrease in the Autonomous Cities of Ceuta and Melilla. The decrease in the death toll took place in a context of an increase in longdistance trips, 2.6% more than in 2018, reaching 427 million trips. The car fleet stood at 35,855,460 vehicles, 2% more than in 2018. The issuance of driving licences increased by 11% and the census of drivers was 27,311,015, 2% more than in 2018. The general director of traffic Pere Navarro has indicated that "the data indicates that we are going to have to concentrate efforts on cities and, especially, on the protection of vulnerable users". Together with the consolidated data on fatal accidents, it is estimated that in 2019 a total of 104,077 traffic accidents with victims occurred in Spain, in which, in addition to the 1,755 people who lost their lives, 139,379 were injured, of which 8,605 required hospital admission. The consolidated figures of accidents with victims and non-fatal victims will be published in the statistical yearbooks of the General Traffic Directorate, once all the information is received from the municipalities.

New Radars Coming Soon Calls to ban noisy motorbikes Technology these days appears to be advancing at an alarming rate, and that also includes the technology behind one of the traffic police´s biggest weapons in the fight for road safety, the speed camera, with the latest incarnations able to pinpoint vehicles from a kilometre and a half away. The Trucam II is the updated version of an already highly advanced radar detector and is currently undergoing rigorous tests around the road network before joining the arsenal of weapons used to combat bad drivers. This device incorporates new technology with improved detection capabilities that can detect infractions committed more than one kilometre away, with a maximum range of between 1,200 and 1,500 metres. It has dynamic autofocus, dynamic auto-iris, a large transflective LCD screen so that it can be seen perfectly in bright sunlight and a processor that is ten times faster than that of the previous generation. The device has a 2-kilometre margin of error, much less than other models, and can take a

across Europe

precise reading in just 0.33 seconds, capable of working in both directions, recording both vehicles moving towards and away from the device. With three readings per second, the device connects via WiFi and Ethernet to tablet computers used by officers at the roadside, recording the evidential images into the database directly. The machine can instantly record the speed of a vehicle, up to 320 kilometres per hour, and can be used both in daylight and at night, providing crystal clear images in complete darkness.

Described as the ultimate tool for traffic enforcement, it´s not only speed that the devices can monitor, it is also capable of detecting other types of infractions. You can document aggressive driving, distractions behind the wheel such as using a mobile phone, not wearing a seat belt, or driving in prohibited lanes. The new radar was introduced last year, but it is still in the testing phase. Tradesegur, the DGT radar provider, is carrying out a series of tests in different streets of several Spanish cities with the radar camouflaged inside a sleeve. For now, the exact location of these trials is unknown, but what has been confirmed is that once the devices successfully pass the tests they will be rolled out across the country, being used in both static and mobile locations.

Manufacturers have intimated they will need to factor in new solutions for upcoming models amid a wave of bans, fines and restrictions being imposed on perceived noisy motorcycles across Central and Northern Europe. While the debate over the ‘nuisance’ caused by certain motorcyclists has raged for years, the argument is increasingly taking on a more volatile tone in Europe as councils wage war with legislation and bans being imposed on certain routes. With noise-measuring devices already being trialled in some countries, the German Federal Council launched the ‘Initiative Against Motorcycle Noise’ in May calling for bans for those who flout the rules. Then in June, the Austrian state of Tyrol imposed bans on motorcycles emitting 95dB of stationary noise – encapsulating a number of high-selling models – on popular routes. Resulting in a demo by motorcyclists the day after the ban came into force, it is nonetheless reported locals have noticed a reduction in noise to the extent the ban could well now be extended further into Austria. Moreover, there are increasing calls for action in Germany, Switzerland, Italy and France too as a result of these precedents.

The impact of such measures if they threaten to become the norm across Europe could have big ramifications for the motorcycle industry with manufacturers needing to factor in legislation when developing brand-new models, leading to toned down engine approaches. In response, German motorcycle publication Motorrad.de have done some impressive legwork to approach each manufacturer for its view on

the current issues and answer a handful of questions directly. Though most replied with single statements erring to a commitment to comply with regulations as they are presented to them, BMW and KTM went into more detail. In it there is a suggestion that manufacturers will club together to argue on the side of the motorcyclist, including a more formalised way of testing the sound of a motorcycle which

appears to give varying results depending on where you go, while urging individuals to not go beyond what is acceptable to put the community at risk of losing its freedoms. Stefan Pierer, ACEM (Association des Constructeurs Européens de Motocycles) President and Head of KTM and Husqvarna said: “As an association of the major global motorcycle manufacturers, ACEM has drawn up specific plans for sustainable and timely measures to combat the volume problem. The association and its members work closely with European legislators to solve the problems that can arise from exceeding the permitted noise limits. “While some of the actions taken by the motorcycle industry will have an impact, today's immediate problems also need to be addressed. The measures taken by motorcycle manufacturers alone are therefore not enough. “Is it justified to punish all motorcyclists for the misconduct of individuals? The debate is emotionally charged; facts take a back seat. Of course, as manufacturers we also take our share of the responsibility seriously.”

Volkwagen ID 4 Volkswagen has revealed more details about its ID.4 – this time focusing on the electric SUV’s design. Like most electric vehicles, the ID.4’s design mission is two-fold; it has to keep the same familylook as the other ID cars, but it also has to as efficient through the air as possible. ‘The electric design evolution of the ID.4 also means that we have focused very strongly on the aerodynamics,’ said Klaus Zyciora, VW’s head of design. ‘Its exterior design is clean, flowing and powerful. It appears strong and selfconfident in a new way. This is mainly due to the seamless, aerodynamic style of our ID. family, which we have transferred to the SUV segment for the first time with the ID.4.’ In the real world, that translates to a drag coefficient of just 0.28, and VW says that translates to a WLTP range of over 500km. The ID.4 looks more like a traditional SUV – probably a smart move that could ensure a lot of buyers are tempted by it when it does arrive. The ID.4 takes inspiration from the ID Crozz concept from a couple of years ago, so expect a range of battery options delivering range of up to around 311 miles on a charge, with the ability to charge from 0-80% capacity in around 30 minutes via a rapid charger.

World’s first seethrough TV Google creates earthquake detection network Mi TV Lux Transparent Edition is the world’s first massproduced transparent TV. With an edge-to-edge transparent self-luminous display, it transmits images that, according to its makers, "seem to be suspended in the air". Love or loathe that idea, the TV does usher in a new way to consume visual content at home – one many viewers have seen only in science fiction films until now. When Mi TV Lux Transparent Edition is turned off, it looks just like a glass display – so it might be wise not to place it in the centre of a room where young children or pets might try to crash through it. Unlike traditional TVs that come with a back panel to house all of the TV's processing units (or LEDs, if it's a back-lit display) and connections, Mi TV Lux Transparent Edition cleverly houses all of these in its circular base stand. Aside from the futuristic design, Mi TV Lux Transparent Edition boasts some flagshiplevel hardware too. The 55-in transparent OLED panel features a 150000:1 static contrast ratio and an infinite dynamic contrast ratio. Its 10-bit panel apparently

displays 1.07 billion colour combinations – far beyond what the human eye can actually perceive. The TV comes with a 120Hz refresh rate and 120Hz MEMC technology too, for clearer motion representation and lifelike, low latency gaming. Drilling down a little further, the Mi TV Lux Transparent Edition is also equipped with an AI Master Smart Engine and a MediaTek 9650 custom-made TV chip, boasting over 20 optimisation algorithms and dedicated optimisation for five major use scenarios, so your TV should intelligently refine the

graphic resolution of whatever you're watching to create the best possible picture. In the sonic department, the TV also supports AI Master for Audio, allowing it to detect the type of content playing and choose a fitting audio mode from a list spanning movies,

music, newsfeed, sports, and others. Naturally, there's Dolby Atmos support onboard as well. Xiaomi, which is currently celebrating its 10th anniversary, claims the new product is "not a TV, but an art piece" with a design that combines a 5.7mm rectangular transparent screen and a round base. The base stand is apparently covered with a "millimetre-grade finish that resembles compact discs" too, in a bid to better blend into its surroundings. Mi TV Lux Transparent Edition runs on a custom-made user interface called MIUI for TV, meaning that the home page, settings, and My App are all specifically designed to better demonstrate the visual features and strength of its transparent screen. The operating system also supports AlwaysOn, which allows users to customise display images and texts when not actually watching their favourite shows. You'll need pretty deep pockets, though. The Mi TV Lux Transparent Edition is only available in the 55-in model, priced at RMB 49,999 (approx. 6,100e or £5,500). Official sales started at 10am on 16th August in Beijing (3pm BST, 10pm ET).

Google has created the “world’s largest earthquake detection network” by allowing all Android phones to function as miniature seismometers. The technology giant announced that the new functionality goes live this week, linking millions of smartphones together to form the Android Earthquake Alerts System. “Starting today, your Android phone can be part of the Android Earthquake Alerts System, wherever you live in the world,” Marc Stogaitis, principal software engineer at Android, wrote in a blog post recently. “This means your Android phone can be a mini seismometer, joining millions of other Android phones out there to form the world’s largest earthquake detection network.” It works by making use of accelerometers – a tiny device found in all smartphones that sense motion and velocity in order to track the device’s orientation. The network calibrates a phone’s accelerometer to detect early signals that indicate an earthquake might be happening. If a phone detects an earthquake it sends a signal to a Google server, together with the device’s location when the shaking took place. By combining multiple signals, the network can analyse the

severity of an earthquake and send alerts to phones in areas that may be affected, giving people a few seconds warning to get themselves to safety if needed. “We’re essentially racing the speed of light (which is roughly the speed at which signals from a phone travel) against the speed of an earthquake,” Mr Stogaitis wrote. “And lucky for us, the speed of light is much faster!” Android is the most popular mobile operating system in the world, used by manufacturers like Samsung and Sony. At its annual developer conference last year, Google announced that there were now 2.5 billion active Android devices, having passed the 2 billion milestone in 2017. Such a vast user-base allowed Google to negate the costly and

time-consuming process of installing a ground network of seismometers. Google’s home state of California, which is prone to severe earthquakes, already has more than 700 seismometers installed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). These seismometers help power the state’s ShakeAlert earthquake detection system, which will now be integrated into Android's system as part of a partnership between Google and the USGS. “This announcement means that California’s world-class earthquake early warning system will be a standard function on every Android phone — giving millions precious seconds to drop, cover and hold on when the Big One hits," said California Governor Gavin Newsom.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

So, the new English football season is back. How was your close season? Did you manage to sneak a quick shower in or at the very least make a cuppa? English teams can just be grateful they didn’t get as far as any European finals as the domestic game got back underway at Wembley on Saturday. Whisper it very quietly, but is Mikel Arteta on to something at Arsenal? The Gunners put a team out that included both David Luiz AND Mohamed Elneny and still ended up lifting the shield that the modern-day gaffer is keen to remind us is the equivalent to a Super Cup. Liverpool took to the field with an almost full-strength side, bar the missing Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold but played as if those ‘teal accents’ were weighing them down heavily. The Arsenal looked composed and their goal was, and it pains me to start a new season with praise no matter how faint, was impressive - Yo-Pierre doing what he does at the home of football, sticking it past Alisson with ease. Ahead of the game, Rhian Brewster was being talked of as the next Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen combined, given his pre-season tour form. Having clipped the bar with his penalty, there was talk of him being shipped out to Newcastle, Leeds or West Brom on loan as penance. Arteta was so happy with his team’s performance he felt it was the right

time to try and persuade club legend Dennis Bergkamp to come back and join the staff. With Freddie Ljungberg leaving, someone has to fill the Steve Bould/Pat Rice role. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last week - which is entirely possible given the state of the world you’ll have picked up on the fact that Lionel Messi fancies seeing if life does exist outside of Barcelona. However, he’s not completely open to trying entirely new experiences given that he’s likely to be reunited with Peppy G if Barcelona do finally accept that their love affair is over and let Messi keep the dogs. That said, he ain’t going for free as the La Liga office confirmed that his release clause is active - meaning Man City have to get on the blower to that creative accountant once again to make the numbers work. Ronald McDonald has been casting his eye over the City squad just in case the conversation turns to a bucketload of cash plus some players to sweeten the deal. Koeman knows he is losing a god so wouldn’t be averse to bringing in Jesus to replace him. He’d also be keen on Bernardo Silva and given that Barca have already enquired several times about taking Eric Garcia home, he’d do very nicely too please. The current Barcelona coach is also hoping that Sadio Mane remembers the conversation they had years ago when Ronnie promised the striker that he’d play for Barcelona one day. Koeman is keen to make that promise come true and persuade Sadio to be the first to leave the band. Before you

know it, the Liverpool front three will be just like the Sugarbabes - three new faces and nowhere near as good as the originals. Manchester United, whilst WhatsApping Borussia Dortmund every few hours to see if they’ve changed their mind on Jadon Sancho, are in pole position to sign Ajax’s Donny van de Beek who must have been starting to wonder what he’d done wrong. He’s available for €40m and, once again, could be filed under ‘good transfer business by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’ if the deal happens. Frank Lampard’s Chelsea are spending money like Roman Abramovich needs to get some of it off his books and that is doing one thing and one thing only for Lamps’ Chelsea future. Each signing is moving Lampard one step closer to the exit as expectations increase faster than the Blues’ wage bill. Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell and Malang Sarr have all put pen to very expensive paper and Chelsea would still love Kai Havertz to join the list. Frank still wants a new shot-stopper, even if the club cannot find anyone daft enough to give them their money back for Kepa and his heart is currently set on Rennes number one Edouard Mendy. Tottenham fans will also be getting excited by their club’s equally sexy signings - if by sexy you mean the complete opposite. It’s massively unlikely the Spurs contingent are getting too drunk on the news that Matt Doherty will replace Serge Aurier for £14m to tuck in nicely with Hojbjerg and Joe Hart.

Carlo Ancelotti used the press exceptionally well last week, making it sound like he’d be off if Everton didn’t up their transfer window game. Seven days later and they are being linked to James Rodriguez and Allan of Napoli - clearly, part of the compromise was that the Toffees only sign players with traditional English first names. As a nice little bonus, Carlo is also likely to get shot of alleged problem-child Moise Kean, with Juventus and Pirlo the latest to believe they can do something with the striker. Pirlo also hopes to take Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin to Turin as he clearly intends to build a very quirky XI. Staying with players only recruiting players with a certain style of name, Aston Villa want Tammy Abraham and Emi Martinez. N’Golo Kante is more than happy to join the ex-EPL contingent at Inter just as soon as they release Antonio Conte. Sadly the news didn’t break on Sunday morning, but QPR’s Eze is off to the Palace and it will only cost them £20m. Newcastle don’t want to feel too left out since they sights have gone from the world A-Listers to Jeff Hendrix and are currently being linked to Celtic’s Edouard, Arsenal’s Rob Holding and Moussa Marega, who has waited until September to make his first appearance on the rumour merry-go-round. Finally, Troy Deeney is up for a move to the Midlands with WBA offering him the incredible opportunity to get relegated for the second season in a row.
