Local residents summoned for Covid jab The Department of Public Health will begin to vaccinate 79-year-olds this week with the vaccine from the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. The vaccination process with AstraZeneca for those born in 1956 (65 years) will also get under way at the same time. This is a long-awaited and much-welcomed step by local residents who were concerned that the vaccination programme had not even begun within local communities. Both groups have already begun to receive by text message (SMS) the summons to go to the relevant vaccination points. The immunisation of the group of people born in 1956 - 1957 will take place on 6th and 7th April at the place and time indicated in the SMS text message. The vaccination in the 79-yearold age group will begin after the end of the first-dose vaccination for people over 80 years of age (a collective of 286,925

people). Progressively, people of 79 years, 78 years, 77 years and so on will be called by phone message. Health officials want to make sure that, in the case of both age groups, you should not go to the vaccination point if

you do not have a personal SMS for the summons – even if you fall within that age group. The second dose of any of the vaccines will continue to be administered to those people that correspond and in line with the official time scale.

five minutes to ensure social distancing. Each entrant paid 20e to take part and returned to Evolution Bar where a fabulous brunch with unlimited Cava or beer was available. The initiative was launched on facebook group ‘The Irish Community in Orihuela Costa’ and has been spearheaded by Audrey 0’Gorman. It is hoped that now the first targets have been met that the campaign will continue and help other locations or urbanisations to raise money for

Civil Guard dismantles Rojales marijuana plantation The Civil Guard has arrested a person in Rojales for possessing a huge marijuana plantation inside his home. At the beginning of February, the Civil Guard in Almoradí had information that inside a house located in the urbanisation Ciudad Quesada, which forms part of the town of Rojales, a significant amount of marijuana was being grown indoors. The information was based mainly on the characteristic smell that emanated strongly from the single-storey premises. From that moment, the

Investigation Area of the Civil Guard of Almoradí began the an operation that was code named Tabique. Throughout the investigations, it was possible to watch the plantation and identify the person in charge of caring for the crop. Something that was simple considering that he was the only resident of the house. On 25th February, with the help of the Torrevieja Citizen Security Unit (USECIC) and a corresponding court order, an entry and search of the house was carried out. This resulted in the arrest of a 41-year-old

Spanish man and the seizure of 150 large marijuana plants with a total weight of 24 Kilograms and multiple tools intended for their maintenance and cultivation. The plantation was located in the basement of the house, which was fully equipped in order to achieve perfect growing conditions for the crop. The Instruction Court No. 4 of Torrevieja is now presiding over proceedings. The man arrested is charged with a crime against public health and after appearing in court was released with charges.

Road works in Torrevieja Road works began yesterday in the centre of Torrevieja which will include the resurfacing of roads and new traffic lights and signals. The work will cost a total of 327,398€ and last two months. Work will be carried out at various locations including the roundabout at the Torrevieja University Hospital, Avenida Delfina Viudes, Apolo, Zoa and Antonio Machado streets, Avenida del Pacífico and the Ronda José Samper García. Work to the CV-905 roundabout will be carried out at night, connecting Cartagena with the N-332 road and finally Avenida de la Purisima will be re-surfaced.

Property investors focus on Spain Despite the pandemic having caused a slowdown in personal property purchases, investors are keen to keep buying and plan to expand their portfolios this year, in both residential and commercial buildings. Although 2020 was a disappointing year for the property industry as a whole, the back end of the year showed strong signs of recovery – new builds, in particular, bounced back, with sales and purchases rising by over 4 percent in the final quarter of 2020, compared with figures from the same three months in 2019. Recent research shows that 55 percent of property investors across Europe intend to buy in Spain in 2021, which is expected to translate to a growth in this type of home or commercial premises purchase in the country of between 10 and 20 percent based upon 2020 figures. Investors' approaches in Spain this year are fairly diversified and the EMEA Investor Survey has asked them about the nature of their buying plans for the first time – around a third are looking at value-added strategies, whilst 26 percent are expecting to opt for core-plus. The survey says 56 percent are

particularly keen to attract and retain solvent tenants, and to work towards growth in income from rent across the board by expanding their portfolio of homes and business premises to let, whilst renovations and resales are of 'serious interest' to at least 50 percent. Multi-family property, such as apartment blocks or complete

urbanisations of several villas, are a popular type of investment in Spain for 2021, with 14 percent saying this is their number one option, and the same proportion of investors said they would choose to focus on industrial and logistical property. Overall, now is said to be a good time to invest in office and residential property, but not so much for retail. There is a sharp rise in interest in 'build-to-rent' schemes, particularly among

European investors seeking to break into the Spanish market. The newly-fashionable logistics centre investment market 'still has room to grow' and has not peaked yet, since the pandemic has 'completely transformed' the sector: Companies now need more space for handling a rising demand in online shopping – storage, delivery and packaging centres – and the growth in 'e-commerce' has created new jobs and a need for premises, such as data centre offices. This is one of the many aspects where the pandemic has 'totally changed the face' of the property market, both commercial and residential, says MVGM – the company recalls how last year's lockdown led to a sudden surge in enquiries about homes with gardens, terraces, pools, and generally more outside space. As for location, investors who already have a presence in Spain would choose Madrid above any other major city in Europe – 28 percent said the Spanish capital was their first choice - whilst second choice was Amsterdam, with 13 percent saying they were focusing on the largest Dutch metropolitan area.

More border confusion as Brits turned back According to reports in the UK press dozens of Brits were refused entry at Alicante airport last week and sent back to the UK amid new Brexit rules. It is claimed that border guards at Alicante-Elche airport erected a sign in the terminal saying "NO TIE CARD, NO ENTRY" before refusing entry to some 40 UK nationals. The passengers, who arrived from Manchester, were sent back on the same Ryanair flight they arrived in. Despite Spain rolling out a new system to register permanent foreign residents with biometric documents called TIE cards, those with green residencia forms or with proof of acceptance for a TIE should be allowed entry according to previous statements from the British government. For everyone else, there is a 90-day limit on staying within a six month period - and because 31st March was 90 days since the UK left the EU, that was the day the rules changed. Passengers called the border farce "absolutely diabolical." Some are said to have letters from Alicante Foreigners Office asking

them to collect their residency cards, but were still turned away. Another passenger reportedly turned away was a woman who had travelled to see her sick father in hospital. According to reports armed police officers were at the terminal

supporting the border agents and to add to the Brits' misery, their outgoing flight back to Manchester was delayed and they were then told their hold luggage wouldn't reach the UK until 2nd April. The passengers said that there was no advice or help on hand. Ryanair had assured passengers that their documents, passports and Covid tests, were enough to gain entry to Spain. However, it obviously remains unclear under Spain's travel rules, as to whether documents such as letters

confirming successful application of Tie Cards can be accepted. However, non-residents who can demonstrate their journey is essential will be granted entry. A spokesman for the British embassy in Madrid said: "When making plans to travel from the UK to Spain, a UK national must make sure they meet both the requirements to leave the UK and those to enter Spain, bearing in mind that they are not the same. "Ultimately, the decision on whether to grant entry into Spain is made by Spanish border officials." Around 300,000 British citizens are registered as permanent residents in Spain. To be able to live in Spain now, you will need to show proof that you're earning, either through having a contract with a Spanish company, or by proving that you have at least £2,000 a month coming into your account. For a family, it will be much more. You will need to show that you have an extra £500 a month for each member of the family. For example, a family of four will need to prove they earn a yearly salary of at least £42,000.

Torrevieja’s rehabilitation and social integration centre celebrates 10 years The ADIEM Centre for Rehabilitation and Social Integration in Torrevieja this week celebrated the tenth anniversary of its inauguration with an emotional event attended by both clients and staff. The event was attended by the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, the councilor of NGOs and Volunteering, Concha Sala, as well as the president of ADIEM, Gertrudis Marcos, the director of ADIEM, Francisco Canales, and the head of Psychiatry of the Department of Health of Torrevieja, Jesus Mesones. The visiting dignitaries were offered the chance to see in person, the various activities that have been carried out in this centre for a decade. Several people who previously received treatment at the centre also took to the floor to speak about their experiences at ADIEM and to thank the staff for their great work. The mayor praised the great work carried out in the centre and congratulated all the members of ADIEM for the essential service provided so that the people who need it most can overcome their problems. Eduardo Dolón thanked

the team for the invitation and reiterated that Torrevieja Town Hall will always support them so that they can not only continue their great work but also expand their facilities soon. The rehabilitation centre of Torrevieja carries out up to 99 different individual and group activities at its centre, including workshops on social skills, cognitive rehabilitation, daily life skills, sports, emotional reinforcement and recovery of

health, sports, computing, cooking, outings, leisure, musical expression, painting, theatre, mutual aid groups (GAM), and more. Opposition calls for the resignation of Orihuela Mayor The Mayor of Orihuela, Popular Party leader, Emilio Bascuñana, will have to testify before a judge this month following an investigation by the AntiCorruption Prosecutor's Office has resulted in evidence of crime for allegedly having being paid public money, more than 200,000 euros, as an advisor to the Department of Health without actually doing the job between 2007 and 2013. Given this news, the municipal opposition groups, PSOE and Cambiemos, have requested the resignation of the Mayor and have targeted his government partner, Ciudadanos, to act in this regard and force him out. The socialist spokeswoman, Carolina Gracia, said that "this does not surprise us, the problem is that neither Bascuñana nor those who keep him as Mayor have exercised their responsibility, this is no longer just a political issue, today the judicial situation surrounding Bascuñana disables him from continuing". The Cambiemos spokesman, Carlos Bernabé, added that his party believes that “it is unacceptable that Ciudadanos, who already protected Bascuñana in 2018 and blocked a motion of censure at that time, continue to support a mayor's office that, once again, is staining the name of Orihuela and that is associated with the way in which the PP has infested the institution. A

situation that is all the more serious insofar as it affects Public Health, which was brutally curtailed in the same years that the current mayor of Orihuela was receiving favourable treatment from it”. The spokesman for Ciudadanos, José Aix, has stated that the party will be prudent until it knows the judicial order in depth before making a decision, although they consider it to be "bad news" for the city. Ciudadanos also awaits explanations from the Mayor and the decision of the PP, which is "the party with the problem." Given these circumstances, Mayor

Emilio Bascuñana has spoken and made an assurance that "there is nothing new, it is still being investigated" and added that this matter "is based on a fallacy, on a lie and that everything will end well by clarifying the situation.” The Mayor added that "he has done what he has always been commanded as a Conselleria worker to do" and is very calm. "Whatever happens, no matter who it affects, I am here to defend the interests of the Oriolans, who are the ones who put me here and I will continue to defend them until the final consequences," he concluded.

New law introduces stricter face mask rules Social distancing will no longer be a determining factor for wearing a face mask in Spain. Last Tuesday, the government published a law in the Official State Gazette (BOE) making masks mandatory in all public spaces regardless of the distance between people. The measure immediately raised questions among some regional officials, some of whom reacted defiantly at the news. Shortly after the law’s publication in the BOE, the government admitted that the guidelines, which build on a decree passed in June of last year, may have been overtaken by today’s reality and improved knowledge about the coronavirus. Central and regional health officials held a meeting and agreed to analyse ways to change a law that several participants described as “obsolete” in many ways, according to sources familiar with the gathering. “I hope that between now and the next meeting [of the InterTerritorial Council] we will have found some space to apply this law in the most harmonised way possible,” said Health Minister Carolina Darias at a news conference. “Face masks are

mandatory, but we have to see whether the law leaves some room for maneuver.” What the law says “People from the age of six and older have the obligation to wear masks [...] on public streets, in outdoor spaces and in any closed space that has a public use or is open to the public,” reads the BOE published announcement. Until now, the coverings were

only mandatory in public and outdoor spaces when it was not possible to keep a distance of 1.5 meters or more between people. These rules were part of a decree issued by the government in June 2020, when the state of alarm ended and a three-month lockdown was lifted. Last Tuesday afternoon the government updated its information website to reflect the

fact that masks are now to be used “always” in the settings mentioned in the BOE, instead of just when there is no safe distance. Until now, regional governments were free to adapt these rules as they saw fit, and many did so immediately after they came out. Some regions made masks mandatory at all times, but introduced exceptions for certain situations, such as going to the beach. But under the newly published law, which replaces the June decree, regional governments may no longer introduce changes. Instead, everyone is bound by the same regulations, which make masks mandatory at all times, including at the beach or the local swimming pool, and even when there is a safe distance between people. The move could further harm the tourism industry, which has been dragged down by a year of coronavirus pandemic. The Valencian region executive noted that face masks are already mandatory in all open and public spaces in their territory, even while sun-tanning on a towel on the beach. So locally, the law does not represent any great change.

New parking facility for costal garbage trucks The City of Orihuela has presented the draft of the workplace for the garbage collection service for Orihuela Costa. "With the construction of this work, we will put an end to 7 years of ‘temporary’ location and also stop parking in Lomas de Cabo Roig centralising everything in a new and modern work centre. This new plot, intended for equipment in PAU26, is near to the current site is 14,000 square meters and requires an investment of 140,000 euros. The Street Cleaning and Urban Waste Collection service was rescued in 2012 by the previous left-wing government team and, from that moment until just over a year ago, there has been no investment in this area, which has led to the service, machinery and vehicles deteriorating and aging. The centres were also "outdated and in need of upgrading, especially the work centre on the coast. This centre, with an enclosure to park the vehicles that make collections along the coast, is located on a public parking lot in an urbanisation and does not comply with urban rules. The decision to located a workplace in this location was adopted by decree of the then Town Planning

Councillor, Antonio Zapata, after not being able to use the plot that the previous contract holder, the businessman Señor Fenoll, had previously used next to the Campoamor gas station. Until just a few months ago the site had a power supply from a street lamp and a pitiful changing room. The improvement of these facilities in Orihuela Costa and those at the Puente Alto industrial estate had been demanded by the staff committee under the imminent threat of a strike. Councillor Aparicio stressed that there have been "many requests" since 2012 to adapt and renew the facility. He explained that “we were clear that it was necessary to provide adequate working areas and now we have done so, allocating 1.7 million euros of investment". Jesús Madrid, architect and

editor of the report, explained that the project is located on a consolidated urban plot destined for equipment storage, where “the roads and accesses have already been fully completed. One of the main objectives is to have as little impact as possible in the urban area where the facillity is located ”. This plot has a lot of vegetation and, ‘what we are going to do is maintain the perimeter belt around the entire plot and in the centre we will locate the platform where we will have an area of more than 5,000 meters, allocated to truck parking, and an area where there will be a laundry room and storage room for work tools," added Jesus Madrid. The plot will also have a two-storey administrative building and has an additional 7,000 meters to house a fixed eco-park for the Coast.

Spain to help citizens stranded by Morocco flight ban

Madrid has been working hard to help repatriate some 3,000 Spanish tourists who are stranded in Morocco after it suddenly imposed a blockade on passenger flights to Spain because of the pandemic. The Moroccan government announced that all passenger flights to and from Spain and France would be suspended from midnight to contain the spread of the virus. “This is another example of how we have to be extremely responsible with our trips at this moment,” Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha Gonzalez Laya said. “At a time of so much uncertainty at borders and regarding rules to enter other countries, it is best to abstain from travel, that is what is most prudent,” she said. The government has been looking into ways to help Spaniards who are affected by the

flight ban to get home, the minister added, without giving details. The flights ban comes during Easter week, a peak travel period in Spain as Thursday and Friday were holidays in much of the country. Morocco is one of Africa’s most popular tourist destinations, welcoming 13 million foreign tourists in 2019, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation. Spanish airline Iberia repatriated up to 348 Spaniards of those who have been stranded in Morocco on Sunday , 148 more than initially planned when programming a larger plane, after the closure of air connections with Spain and France were decreed on 31st March by the authorities. Initially, Iberia had scheduled a 200-seater A321 plane for the afternoon's flight but, in order for the greatest number of people to return, it had to swap and operate

this service with an Airbus A350, with a capacity for 348 passengers. As planned, the flight departed Casablanca at 4:40pm and arrived in Madrid at 7:20pm. Some 3,000 Spaniards who had travelled on holiday to Morocco for Easter found themselves trapped in the Maghreb country following the decision of its authorities to suspend flights. Iberia reported that, in addition, it will be the first time that the company has landed in Morocco with its latest generation aircraft model, the most sustainable and quiet in its fleet. Throughout the crisis of the covid-19 , Iberia has worked closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the European Union and in the first months of the pandemic of coronavirus , made more than 50 repatriation flights, even to some destinations such as Australia or the Philippines, where it hadn't flown before.

There are many people that love D.I.Y. They’ve got the tools, the ideas, the enthusiasm, but unfortunately what they lack are the skills! It’s great being a homeowner as you can try your hand at all kinds of D.I.Y. You’ve watched hundreds of “how to” episodes and now you believe you’re ready to be let loose!

When buyers find jobs left undone, their knee-jerk reaction will be “what else is wrong here?” It becomes a difficult thought process to overturn and makes it nearly impossible for the agent to redirect their buyers into making an offer that would reflect a fair market value.

Whatever D.I.Y. project, or general home improvement you trust yourself to do, you need to make sure you’re following through and finish off what it is you’ve started. It’s easy to get bored if something becomes tricky or difficult to complete. Even with something as simple as lighting. If you’ve installed lights but later found the wiring too complicated, don’t walk away leaving it incomplete. Call a professional.

Lighting makes a huge difference when showing a home, so if you have them… make sure they all work!

If your property is on the market for sale and you have any D.I.Y. jobs left undone, make sure they’re completed before any buyers visit. Nothing looks worse than incomplete work.

Thinking of selling your property? Ready to start the ball rolling but not in Spain right now? Head to www.SellMyHomeInSpain.com to discover how easy the process is!

If you have unfinished work around your house, get it fixed before offering the property for sale otherwise you’ll risk buyers referring to yours as, “The House That Jack Built!”

An update for UK nationals From 1st January, UK Nationals have been able to spend 90 days out of every 180 within the Schengen area for tourism or other specific purposes, such as business meetings, without needing a visa. Any stays beyond the 90 days will be dependent on Spain’s visa and immigration rules and any UK Nationals who would like to discuss extending their stay should contact their local extranjería office or call 060. All foreign nationals intending to stay in Spain for longer than three months have always been obliged to register for residency – whatever their nationality. Therefore if you arrived in Spain before 1 January you must take steps to become resident if you consider your home to be here. Otherwise, you should be arranging to return to the UK. If you are trying to become resident and are in the process of registering or appealing against your application having been rejected, the 90-day rule does not apply to you. HMA Hugh Elliott said: “I’m aware that many second home owners are concerned about overstaying as we reach 31st March. The Spanish Government has been clear that it will take a pragmatic approach to anyone who is stuck in Spain due to circumstances beyond their control, so I don’t want people to be overly worried on that count. However, if people do not intend to become resident here in Spain and see the UK

as their base, we do expect them to take steps to return to the UK as soon as they can.” A Spanish Ministry of Inclusion spokesperson said: “The Spanish Government is working to provide maximum legal certainty for British citizens resident in Spain. Throughout the negotiations, the issue of citizens’ rights has been, and remains, one of the main priorities. Spain is the country of residence of the largest community of UK nationals in the EU. “The Spanish Government has no plans to deport British citizens who have made Spain their home and, for this reason, Spain has been one of the first EU countries to establish a documentation procedure under the Withdrawal Agreement, which consists of a declaratory system to apply for the new residence permit (TIE). We remind British citizens that, although there is no time limit, it is important to make this application as soon as possible as, among other things, it will facilitate the administrative processing and the crossing of the external borders of the European Union.” If you are in the UK and considering travelling to Spain or are in Spain and have friends or family wanting to visit, you should be aware of the continuing travel restrictions on both leaving the UK and entering Spain. UK Nationals must make sure that they meet both

Hugh Elliot, British Ambassador

the requirements to leave the UK and those to enter Spain, bearing in mind that they are not the same. From 30 March, entry to Spain will only be granted to those passengers who can demonstrate that their journey is essential, as well as to those who are already legally resident in Spain. Entering merely to visit, even if you have a second home here, is not a justified reason for entry. You may be questioned on arrival by Spanish border authorities to ensure you meet the entry requirements and they will

only grant entry if they are satisfied that your journey to Spain is essential and reserve the right to deny passage. Ultimately, the decision on whether to grant entry into Spain is made by Spanish border officials as set out in our Travel Advice. For the latest information and links to the restrictions on leaving the UK and entering Spain, we advise people to visit our Travel Advice page on gov.uk and sign up for alerts, so that they are notified of any changes: https://www.gov.uk/foreigntravel-advice/spain

Local steroid dealers busted A gang selling illegal steroids and sports training drugs has been disbanded by the Guardia Civil in an operation that began almost three years ago. Those arrested included 14 Spaniards and a Ukrainian and more than 7,000 doses were seized, alongside high-end vehicles worth 90,000€. Officers also discovered two Policia Local uniforms that gang members would wear at drug supply drops to avert suspicion. The all-male gang were charged with drugs and work offences as well as money laundering. The gang was led by a body-building coach and two partners. Five other people, three men and two women were also arrested accused of drug trafficking. Three pharmacies in Almoradi and San Miguel are alleged to be involved in the crime. A pharmacist and two assistants have been accused of selling unclaimed drugs to the gang when customers did not take everything they were entitled to on their prescriptions. However, the baulk of the drugs were imported in parcels from Eurpean countries as well as China and South America. The gang referred interested clients to a colleague who was a sports medicine distributor, who would send orders through the post. The network included two shops in Almoradi and Torrevieja that sold sports nutrition supplements. The stores offered an onsite injection service, sometimes with serious medical consequences as one man needed an operation after suffering an adverse reaction. Other side effects included people getting kidney problems, becoming sexually impotent and passing black-coloured

Two women arrested for Spain prolongs travel restrictions theft and illegal for countries outside EU possession of weapons The Guardia Civil has arrested two women in Almoradí for the crime of illegal possession of weapons and being suspected of stealing from homes. The Almoradí Civil Guard received a call from a neighbour who told police that two women were walking round the town knocking on the doors of houses with the excuse of ‘meeting neighbours’ and trying to get owners to let them into their homes. Immediately, officers went to the area worried about the intentions of the women and also concerned because of the Covid restrictions dictating that you cannot have other people in your home, only those you actually live with. Once in the area indicted by the caller, police saw two women who appeared to be going door-to-door. It is alleged that the women were entering the homes of the elderly and whilst one of them distracted them, the other would steal any items of value they could find. In the course of the surveillance

carried out by the Almoradí Investigation Area team, they saw the two suspects carrying a bag that they then hid under a vehicle parked on public roads, making sure that it was completely hidden. The officers approached the women, identified them and recovered the bag. Inside they discovered a jacket in which two firearms were wrapped. These weapons were a 38 calibre revolver and a 7.65 calibre Browning pistol with three magazines. Cartridges from this pistol and from the revolver were found hidden in the same bag. Four knives of different sizes were also concealed within the bag. The women turned out to be two Spanish women, aged 23 and 26, respectively, and due to the facts, they were arrested immediately and proceedings were carried out for a crime of illegal possession of weapons. The case was referred to the Court of Instruction No. 3 of Orihuela, which released the pair on bail with charges.

Authorities in Spain have extended restrictions on unnecessary travel from countries outside the European Union and the Schengen Zone until April 30 in order to halt the further spread of the Coronavirus disease. Initially, such preventive measures imposed by Spain’s government were set to last until 31st March. However, in a decision published in Spain’s State Bulletin (BOE), the government announced that, due to the Coronavirus situation, the decision will be kept in place until 30th April. Citizens of foreign countries will not be permitted to make non-essential trips to Spain by air, land, or sea over Easter and the rest of the month. Countries with recently reported low rates of Coronavirus infection will be eligible to make trips, including New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Rwanda, South Korea, Thailand, China (subject to interchange), as well as the areas of Hong Kong and Macao. Such permission is reached under the Schengen-wide agreements in this regard. Spain introduced the list for the first time on 30th June; however, it has been updated several times, based on the Coronavirus pandemic rate in other countries. On 28th January, authorities in Spain excluded Japan from the list after considering the Coronavirus situation in this country. Spain’s government has clarified that citizens coming from the following countries will be required to present a negative result of the COVID-19 test upon their arrival.

Austria Belgium Bulgaria Croatia Cyprus Czechia Denmark (except the Faroe Islands and Greenland) Estonia Finland France Germany Greece Hungary Ireland Italy Latvia Liechtenstein Lithuania Luxembourg Malta Netherlands Norway (except the Møre og Romsdal and Trøndelag regions) Poland Portugal Romania Slovakia Slovenia Sweden

The requirement mentioned above will not include the following countries: • Australia • China • New Zealand • Rwanda • Singapore • South Korea

Over 3,038,170 persons have fully recovered from the virus in Spain, while the country faces 157,451 active cases, Worldometers’ figures reveal. On 23rd March, the Spanish government spokesperson, Maria Jesus Montero, stressed that the country lifted travel restrictions imposed for citizens of the United Kingdom, as the latter recently reported fewer cases of COVID-19 infection. However, the UK’s government has prohibited holidays abroad, including in EU countries, and all persons who violate such a rule risk facing a fine of up to £5,000 (€5,800). Authorities in Spain recently announced that they would require PCR test results for persons who plan to cross the land border from France in an effort to contain the virus’ spread during the Easter holidays. Earlier this month, Spain’s government announced that persons reaching the country from Brazil and South Africa must follow quarantine rules upon their arrival. Such an order will be valid until April 4, 2021.

Torrevieja Funfair reopens Torrevieja’s funfair reopened on Thursday for the Easter season. The popular attraction will remain open until April 18th with all the safety and hygiene measures in place. The Councillor for Security and Emergencies of the Torrevieja City Council, Federico Alarcón, made the announcement that the fair is now open once again to the public. The fair, popular with tourists and locals alike, is located in the port area, in front of Paseo de La Libertad. In addition Councillor Alarcón confirmed the reopening of La Mata fair, in the Plaza de Encarnación Puchol. The Torrevieja Fair Association (ATIF) said that due to the curfew established by the Valencian Community (10pm), the fair attractions will have to close to the public at 9.30pm. All the necessary safety and

hygiene measures are in place at the fair, with hydro alcoholic gel dispensers found at all entrances, the use of masks being mandatory

(whether or not the safety distance is kept), and the disinfection of the rides after each use.

Inmobiliaria, the original and still the best Any business that stands the test of time does so because it offers a high quality service or product and puts customer service at the heart of its business. However, to thrive in Spain for more than 30 years and stay head-andshoulders above the competition makes that business exceptional – and this is exactly what Quesada’s leading estate agent Inmobiliaria has achieved. Since opening its doors in 1989 it has helped thousands more people buy and sell properties than any other agent in this area. It has navigated recessions, property booms and now a global pandemic and is still going strong and it is this breadth and depth of experience that helps Inmobiliaria locate buyers even in the most challenging times. Inmobiliaria has a team of professionals that are completely focussed on the local property market, making them experts in their field. The team caters for all nationalities, speaking a range of languages to ensure buyers and sellers feel completely at ease and understand each step of the process. Company Director Rebecca Serwotka explains: “No-one knows Quesada and the surrounding area better than we

do. We live here and work here, we have raised our families here and are ingrained in the community and have been for many years. “We know many of the properties inside and out, literally, having bought and sold them a number of times. We are able to guide buyers to making a great investment without even being in Spain thanks to our innovative 3D video tours and to help home buyers even further I have written a ‘Spanish Property Buying Guide’ for 2021 which is free to download at: www.buymyhomeinspain.com” In line with the current situation, the safety of customers and the team is key. It is only natural that homeowners and buyers are nervous about the process of house viewings and so the team has created a system to put their minds at rest and provide the necessary protection and implementing socially distanced viewing appointments. To this end Inmobiliaria has introduced its VIP Bags – VIP standing for Very Important Protection - as a standard protocol for staff and customers when viewing properties.

Welcoming someone inside your home in the current health climate is a serious consideration for homeowners, as is visiting an enclosed, unknown space when you are viewing. However, the VIP Bags are aimed to offer maximum protection to all those involved. Each Inmobiliaria VIP Bag contains: disposable gloves, hand sanitiser, face masks and shoe covers. The shoes covers have proved a particular hit, as viewers don’t have to keep taking their shoes off and on at the door. Inmobiliaria’s professional agents ensure that customers follow the safety guidelines, such as social distancing and use the packs to ensure that both they and the owners of the houses they are visiting stay safe and protected. For further information on any of the above, or if you are looking to start a property search visit: www.homes4u.es, call into the Inmobiliaria offices located in Calle de los Arcos 1, near to the arches in Quesada, or call 966 718 392. Alternatively, see the centre page advert for a selection of just some of the properties available with Inmobiliaria.

How the Crash Hit our Cash Some saw savings swell but others got crushed and the economy sank. Record low interest rates, a stock market crash, soaring unemployment, a turbocharged UK property market and more savings than ever in the bank. There has never been a year quite like it for our household finances. Blow for interest rates Savers have suffered their worst ever year after interest rates plunged to record lows when the Bank of England slashed the base rate to 0.1 per cent. This is the lowest it has been in 327 years - and rounded off an already desperate decade for savers.

Surge in savers More of us are saving than ever before even if it is by accident. Those who are fortunate enough not to have lost their jobs have more spare cash because they cannot socialise or go on holiday. Investing boom Rock-bottom savings rates have increased the number of first-time investors over the past year. If you are looking for better returns on your hard-earned savings but are wary of the stock market, then help is at hand. Seagate Wealth have access to products from some of the

worlds’ leading providers including Prudential International. Why should you choose Seagate to advise you? All our advisers were trained at Lloyds Bank in the UK. GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP A strong end to March saw sterling take first place for the day and the week, and second place for the whole of Q1 overall. In the first three months of the year the pound has strengthened by an average of 4.1%. Its only loss is to the Canadian dollar, and even that is just 0.3%, half a Canadian cent. This week also saw GBP/EUR resistance just above €1.17 that has held sterling back for more than a year. Sure enough, sterling blew through it and the pound traded briefly above €1.1750 for the first time since February last year. Why was sterling in such an optimistic mood? Well, it’s easier to say what made little difference to the pound than to identify the reasons for its success. Last Friday’s UK retail sales data were respectable but the monthly increase of 2.1% was no better than expected. The Bank of England’s Money and Credit report was much as expected. Net mortgage borrowing in February was the strongest in five years, with households continuing to pay down consumer credit and build bank deposits, but held no surprises. Revised data for fourth quarter gross domestic product in Britain put Q4 growth at 1.3% and the contraction for 2020 as a whole at 7.3%. Nationwide said house prices fell 0.2% in March, leaving them 5.7% higher on the year. In other news Bank of England Chief Economist Andy Haldane wrote a piece for the Guardian, in which he argued that throwing money at the Covid recovery will only be half of the solution: “the only way of immunising against economic long Covid will be through a skills programme every bit as large-scale, sure-footed and front-loaded.” A report also came out from the Federation of Small Businesses. Its survey of 1,500 companies found that 23% had temporarily stopped exporting to the

EU, 11% had halted completely and another 11% were considering a permanent halt to European exports. More light will be shed on the situation when the official ONS trade figures appear in a fortnight’s time. EURO Another week and the same sticky points are still holding the euro back. Yet again the euro narrative centred on the European Covid vaccination programme and how it might slow Europe’s economic recovery from the pandemic. Germany, in a complete reversal of its original misgivings, suspended the use of the AstraZeneca product on people under 60. On Wednesday night, France announced a new national lockdown and a 10km travel restriction. With the exception of Malta, the EU is being left behind in the race to inoculate populations. The euro lost one US cent and gave up a cent and two thirds to sterling. There was a general shortage of hard euro area economic data: inflation was in line with forecast at 1.3%, and that was all. Soft data (surveys and suchlike) were more plentiful. In March, Italian consumer confidence decreased by half a point to 100.9, while business confidence was a point and a half higher at 101.2. Ifo’s survey found that “sentiment among German [business] managers has improved noticeably”. Confidence readings from the European Commission showed expectations “sharply improving”. By and large, the US economic data has been at least as good as the numbers from Europe, but not in every case, which brings up the question of why the euro has struggled. It is hard to avoid the suspicion that investors are keeping the euro at arm’s length because they fear the EU will be left behind economically as a result of vaccine disarray.

Fears of fourth wave in Spain Fears of a fourth wave are looming in Spain as the country once again enters a high-risk situation as defined by the coronavirus alert system. Under this traffic light system, an area is at high risk when the 14-day incidence rate exceeds 150, the seven-day incidence rate is more than 75, and the occupancy rate in intensive care units (ICUs) is between 15 percent and 20 percent. The system also takes into account the positivity rate, i.e. the percentage of tests that come back positive out of the total; the traceability rate – how many contacts are detected per 100 cases; and the occupancy rate of normal hospital beds. According to the latest Health Ministry report, released last week, the first three indicators now exceed the established thresholds. The 14-day cumulative number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants stands at 152, the seven-day incidence rate is at 79.8 and Covid-19 patients occupy 18.4 percent of all ICU beds. This places Spain on level three of the four-level alert system, in which the highest level indicates extreme risk.

News

CostaBlancaPeople 6th - 12th April 2021

The alert system was really designed to measure the evolution of the pandemic in smaller areas, such as the regions, but when applied to all of Spain it gives an idea of the rise in cases that has been seen over the past few weeks, in what some regions are already calling the beginning of a fourth wave. In Castilla y León, for example, regional health chief Verónica Casado said: “We are heading towards a situation that leads us to believe that we are already entering a fourth wave.” Casado made the statement at a press conference following a meeting of the Inter-Territorial Council of the National Health System, which brings together health officials from the central and regional governments. Health Minister Carolina Darias also appeared at the conference to call on the public to demonstrate “responsibility” and “exemplary behaviour” in order for the Covid-19 vaccination drive to take effect. “Each week that we advance we are gaining time on the virus,” she said. “We need the vaccines to benefit from this time to

prevent this spike from turning into a fourth wave.” Although the incidence rate is rising in most Spanish territories, it is doing so from very different starting points. Seven territories have an incidence rate above the 150-threshold considered an indicator of high risk: Asturias, Catalonia, Madrid, Navarre, the Basque Country and the North African exclave cities of Ceuta and Melilla. Four regions are very close to this limit: Andalusia, Aragón, Castilla y León and La Rioja. In another five, the 14-day cumulative number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants remains below 100: the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, the Valencia region, Galicia and Murcia. Pressure on hospitals, however, has still not increased despite the fact that cases have been on the rise for the past two weeks. In ICUs, the percentage of beds occupied by Covid-19 patients has remained around 18.4 percent (keeping in mind this figure measures total capacity, including surgery spaces) and in hospital wards the figure continues to be around 6.5 percent.

International headliners at Marbella’s Starlite Festival Famous national and international bands and solo artists have confirmed their presence at this year's Starlite Festival in Marbella, which given the pandemic must be one of the most eagerly-awaited and bound to be highly-attended its ten-year history. So far, Welsh-born crooner Tom Jones, '80s indie-rockers Simple Minds, and soul legend Lionel Richie are definites, as are the multi-lingual modern opera band Il Divo and Colombian reggaetón star Maluma. Previously, top 40 charthoggers Aitana, David Bisbal, Antonio Orozco, Rosario, Miguel Ríos and Rozalén, and Spain's answer to Cliff Richard, Raphael, confirmed their slots. Other pre-bookings include Alan Parsons, Passenger, Nile Rodgers & Chic, Antonio José, Magán, Taburete, Pablo López, Ozuna, Sebastián Yatra, José Luis Perales, Ara Malikian, Tomatito, Carlos Rivera, and the Murciaborn rock duo Estopa, made up of the Muñoz brothers and whose soulful hits were on constant

heavy rotation on mainstream radio at the beginning of the century. Basque-based modern veterans La Oreja de Van Gogh – a fivesome never off the radio in the first 10 years of the Millennium – have also confirmed they will be performing at Starlite on 25th June. Also this week, Míriam Rodríguez and Cepeda – the latest generation of Spanish artists – have confirmed they will be performing on July 15, and Sevilla-born vocalist Beret, an upand-coming urban pop-cum-hip hop sensation, is a definite for his slot on 26th June. Global legends Tom Jones, Il Divo, Lionel Richie and Simple Minds will be performing on 8th July, 7th July, 27th July, and 31st July respectively. On each day of the festival, doors open at 8pm, when ticketholders can enter the Starlite Lounge and wine, dine and enjoy the support acts, then the main concerts start at 10pm and the Starlite Disco begins at midnight. It is the only disco in the world that takes place in a quarry, and

carries on until 6 in the morning. Two buses will be run from the car park to make access easier, given the somewhat unusual location of this globallyrenowned festival, although parking passes for those who want to use their own vehicles can be bought at the same time as entries to the concerts. The highly-acclaimed venue is an open mine shaped like a natural rocky amphitheatre, out in the countryside and with excellent acoustics. Running from 17th June to 28th August this year, the Starlite has always attracted huge names – in past editions, Julio Iglesias, Enrique Iglesias, Ricky Martín, Andrea Bocelli and Alejandro Sanz have graced the Marbella stage, opting to give their only Spain-based concerts of the year at the popular festival. Tickets are now on sale via Ticketmaster, but will be limited in number as social distancing and all other anti-Covid procedures will need to be followed to ensure the festival is able to go ahead.

Bankia takeover Caixabank has completed its merger with Bankia, putting an end to the 10-year history of the latter brand – the company as a whole will go by the CaixaBank logo and trading name. The high-street giant logged the takeover with the Mercantile Registry and the very next day, launched on the stock market as a new company. The bank has stressed that the everyday situation for customers will be 'broadly the same' until the full migration of operations from each entity to the newly-formed firm – a process that is expected to be complete before the end of 2021. Some changes will occur, mainly for customers of Bankia, as they have now become CaixaBank customers – although they have been assured these will be minor. One example is account numbers:

In Spain, these are 20 digits long, with the first four denoting the bank and the next four the branch. CaixaBank account numbers start with 2100, and Bankia accounts begin with 2038, meaning Bankia clients' account numbers will now start with 2100 once the migration takes place. This will not come at any cost to the customer and will be done automatically. In theory, former Bankia customers do not need to take any action, but if they are self-employed or theirs is a business account, they should notify their clients, suppliers, contractors, accountants and the tax authorities of the change in their IBAN number – the first four digits of which will also swap over to those of CaixaBank – and SWIFT code, which is set to change, if any of these are overseas.

CaixaBank will deal with utility bills and other direct debits and standing orders to ensure they are redirected to the correct account – this is standard practice anyway when a customer changes banks in Spain; it is the new bank which arranges direct debit changes rather than the client's having to call their phone companies, electricity boards and so on to update them – although account holders should keep a close eye on their bill payments over the next few months to ensure this has been actioned correctly. It is the customer who is legally responsible for bank account change information, but banks will normally handle these as part of their service. Bankia and CaixaBank mortgageholders will not change, since this is a contract with a finite duration and specific end date, meaning it is not legally possible for conditions of these to be altered without a new agreement being signed between customer and provider. The same applies with insurance policies, loans, and deposit accounts with an expiry date – conditions cannot be modified unless both parties agree or there are valid reasons the existing contract already provides. Cards Bankia credit and debit card holders can continue using these until they activate their new CaixaBank cards, which will be posted to their home addresses after the system migration; even once the

cards arrive, they will not replace the Bankia ones until the new version has been physically put in operation by the customer. CaixaBank card holders do not need to take any action, as their existing cards will continue to function. Credit and debit cards – not the physical card, which has an expiry date, but the service – as well as savings and current accounts are contracts of indefinite duration with no set end date, meaning their conditions can be modified by law. This said, any changes

have to be notified to the customer within a set legal time period. If conditions alter so as to be less beneficial to the client – such as increased commission payments for having an account open - at least two months' notice must be provided, so he or she has the option to cancel the contract at no cost and without penalty. Where conditions are changed to the benefit of the customer, such as commissions being reduced or axed, the amendment can take place immediately and without notice.

A single-dose vaccine against Covid-19 created by Janssen will be in use throughout the European Union from 19th April, and Spain is set to get enough for 40 million jabs. Janssen itself has confirmed this, and the European Commission has signed a contract to purchase 400 million doses, of which Spain will have 10 percent. Unlike the Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines, the Janssen version only needs to be administered once, with no second or booster dose a few weeks later, and it can be kept in an ordinary refrigerator rather than needing to be stored at exceptionally-cold temperatures requiring special freezer units. Janssen says its inoculation is suitable for use in humans of any age, including pregnant women and breast-feeding mums, and that the side-effects from it are 'very mild' – unlike the AstraZeneca injection where many of those who have had it have related intense headaches, hangover-like symptoms. In fact, according to Informacion, more than 1,000 school teachers are allegedly off sick due to the side-

effects of the AstraZeneca jab. This, also known as the 'Oxford vaccine', is now back in use in most countries after the European Medicines Agency (EMA) confirmed the risk of thrombosis is extremely small, but those due to receive it have been warned to seek immediate medical attention if they suffer severe headaches, shortness of breath, limb swelling or pain.

The Janssen vaccine will be the fourth in use in Europe, and the first delivery will be for 50 percent of the order, or 200 million, by the end of 2021, always with 10 percent going to Spain as distribution by member State is in accordance with population size and incidence of contagion. The European Commission says it will be monitoring the situation to ensure it does not run into the same 'delivery issues' it experienced with AstraZeneca.

Between April and June inclusive, a total of 5.5 million doses of the Janssen injection will arrive in Spain, according to the national government, which is still working on the EU-wide goal of having 70 percent of the population vaccinated by summer. By then, it is expected two other vaccines against Covid-19 – the Novavax and CureVac – will have been signed off by the EMA. Spain's tourism minister Reyes Maroto says she hopes travel will restart and 'restrictions reduced' by the second week in April, and that the Janssen inoculation will lead to 'vaccination on a scale that will allow us to prepare for safe holidays again'. She has urged everyone to be 'cautious', but hopes for an 'optimistic summer'. Health minister Carolina Darias also says that from around now, another delivery of vaccines will start to arrive from Pfizer and Moderna. Spain's regional health authorities will 'have a million more doses', says Sra Darias, and they are now 'preparing themselves to be able to administer all the vaccines that arrive from April'.

LIBERTY SEGUROS explains the new changes with respect to the socalled Green Card As of April 1, the green card -which verifies the validity of Compulsory Liability Insurance for vehicles- is no longer green and will now be sent by email to policy holders by their insurance provider. In a move that will see more of the sector enter the era of digital transformation, drivers will be able to print their own green cards, with black and white prints on standard A4 paper. This change has been driven within the decisionof The Council of Bureaux, the organisation acting for the protection of cross-border road traffic and coordinating the activities of the different EU members of the Green Card system, to check the validity of Third Party Liability Motor Insurance through a new centralised single platform. Now, using advanced security measures, its centralised web platform will allow insurers of its member countries to generate “QR-coded”Green Cards, which will then be sent to policy holders as downloadable PDFs. So, these documents no longer need to be printed on the traditional, greencoloured paper and as such, the traditional Green Card may simply become black and white. These changes mean that when you are driving in a Bureaux member

country, the authorities will be able to check automatically, through this platform, if a vehicle is duly insured. But, despite these changes, LIBERTY SEGUROS reminds that when you are visiting countries that are not part of the European Economic Area (such as the UK and Gibraltar), the green card document, although now a printed version, will be mandatory as it always has been. In the same manner, insured vehicles from countries OUTSIDE of The Council of Bureaux and those that are not part of the European Economic Area (including, UK and Gibraltar-registered vehicles)willalso be required to carry the documentwhilst driving in Spain. For LIBERTY SEGUROS, no longer having to print and post Green Cards in a specified colour and format will be a welcome change. For policy holders, LIBERTY SEGUROSassures drivers that the new process is as easy as printing an airline boarding pass. With the changes that surround Brexit, LIBERTY SEGUROS understands that there’s a real need for clear and transparent information regarding changes to driving in Spain, and it remains on-hand to keep you informed with regard to your obligations as a

driver. The expat’s preferred insurer, LIBERTY SEGUROS offers a wide range of covers for car insurance that can be tailored to your individual needs, with advantages that stand out against competitors. For example, with LIBERTY SEGUROS, there’s no need to declare vehicle accessories if they have been fitted by the manufacturer;and, in the case of a claim, any luggage or personal belongings are covered up to 500€. LIBERTY SEGUROSalso offers extended cover in case of Total Loss or Total Theft at 100% of the value ‘as new’ if the vehicle is less than 2 years old, orat 80% of the value ‘as new’ if the vehicle is between 2 and 3 years old. A courtesy car is included as standard for up to 45 days (35 days for vehicle breakdown) and policy holders are free to chooseagarage of their choice in the event of a claim.

Furthermore, with LIBERTY SEGUROS you can also take out car insurance for UK-plated vehicles (except for vehicles registered in Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and Gibraltar), as well as cover for classic vehicles and Spanish and UK-registered motorhomes!

Inception

This Week´s Movie Picks My Cousin Rachel

Saturday 10th April – ITV, 11.45 pm

Sunday 11th April – Channel 4, 11.55 pm

Dom Cobb is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb's rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible, inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea, but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming.

Philip, an orphan, was taken in and brought up by his cousin Ambrose, a Devon landowner he loves like a father. At a time, Ambrose, who has been advised by his physician a warmer climate, leaves for Tuscany. There he meets and marry Rachel, a halfItalian cousin of his. After an idyllic outset, the situation deteriorates. Shortly before his death, Ambrose manages to alert Philip: his wife is killing him slowly. Willing to sort out the truth, Philip goes to Ambrose's place but he does not find Rachel, who has gone away. Instead he meets Rainaldi, her friend and lawyer, who does not inspire him with confidence. He returns to his estate, persuaded that Rachel is evil and is the direct cause of Ambrose's death. Some time later, Rachel announces her coming. Determined to welcome her coolly, he is stunned to discover a woman not only beautiful but elegant, intelligent and sensitive. Instead of strangling her like he said he would, he falls in love.

First virtual meeting of Important health checks the Torrevieja U3A missed due to the pandemic, On Friday 26th March the Torrevieja branch of the U3A held the first monthly weeting for its members since the current problems began in 2020. The meeting was a virtual experience carried out by the means of Zoom that allowed members anywhere in the world to partake from the comfort of their armchairs! Everyone was able to see all the other people attending as well as the different officers whilst they made their announcements for the, hopeful, future. The main speaker was a U3A member, Martin Pitman, who gave a very good presentation entitled "Strawberries from Nepal". It was an extremely detailed look into the lives of certain groups in Nepal and was highly interesting and thoughtprovoking.

The whole meeting was recorded and the video is available for members to watch on the Torrevieja U3A website and also on its Facebook page. The next meeting, to be held by Zoom once more, will take place on April 30th when we will have Brad De Abreu, a representative of “Age in Spain”, speaking to members about all the help and support available to those people living in Spain that the association provides. Any U3A member wishing to join in can do so by contacting Media manager Les to register your interest in taking part and to receive the necessary link. Further details will be advised by separate means over the next couple of weeks. Get in early as there is a limit to attendees of 100 members.

Kudos to Ann and Jon Costa Blanca People reader Laura Delaney got in touch this week to ask us to give a shout out to Ann and Jon Bartlett. Laura told us, “Ann Barlett and her husband Jon from Zest hair and Beauty are the pillar of our community in the Citrus Centre And Playa Flamenca. On Friday they raised over 700 euros for the La Florida Food Bank in Kaceys Bar Citrus Centre.” Laura went on to say, “I have to say when anyone fundraises or is struggling, Ann and Jon are the first people to help and never get any recognition. They are fantastic and deserve the praise. When

we were fundraising for two defibrillators, Ann was the first one to offer spot prizes. Well done Ann, you are truly inspirational.”

survey reveals A GROWING number of people are suffering eye-related conditions as a result of continued lockdown restrictions – with newresearch revealing 42% of people have noticed sight deterioration since March 2020. This represents a significant increase in the number of people noticing a deterioration in their vision during the first lockdown (34%) as reported by Specsavers Ópticas last year . Yet, the new study by the high street opticians shows that half (50%) of those suffering any deterioration are yet to address the issue and see an optician. It also showed that people are feeling ever more concerned about leaving their home. These results have been released for World Health Day on the 7th of April, because an eye test is an important health check, and missing these tests can not only put eyesight at risk, but potentially other aspects of their health too. Jorge Martínez de Lizarduy Araico, from Specsavers Ópticas, says it is incredibly important for people to seek professional support if they have any concerns with their sight. He is also reassuring people that they have introduced a series of measures in store to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for all customers.

‘It’s important that anyone noticing a change in their vision gets it seen to right away. While usually this is down to a change in prescription or from our eyes feeling tired, in other cases it can be something more serious. There are several changes we may notice in our vision which could be a sign of a wider health condition. Drinking six glasses of wine a Two supermarket week could be good for your eyes finds to watch out for Drinking six glasses of wine a week could be good for your eye health, according to a new scientific study. The research found that those who consume up to 14 units of alcohol per week are less likely to develop cataracts. Cataracts are cloudy patches that appear in the lens of the eye and can lead to a decrease in vision and are most common in older people. Cataract surgery is one of the most common surgical procedures carried out across Europe. The study into links between cataract surgery and alcohol consumption was carried out by Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and University College London’s Institute of Ophthalmology. The research, which is the largest of its kind to date, analysed data from more than 490,000 people in the UK Biobank and EPIC-Norfolk cohort studies. Participants in these studies give detailed information about their health, lifestyle and circumstances throughout their lives. The study’s findings show that those whose alcohol consumption was within the government-recommended amount of 14 units of alcohol per week were less likely to have cataract surgery. The risk was lower among those who drank wine, compared with people who drank beer or spirits. The risk of cataract surgery was 23 per cent lower for those within the EPIC-Norfolk cohort who drank wine at least five times a week

and 14 per cent lower within the UK Biobank cohort for the same alcohol consumption category. Dr Sharon Chua, first author of the paper, which has been published in the journal Ophthalmology , said that the link could be attributed to the antioxidants present in wine. Chua said: “Cataract development may be due to gradual damage from oxidative stress during ageing. The fact that our findings were particularly evident in wine drinkers may suggest a protective role of polyphenol antioxidants, which are especially abundant in red wine.” Dr Anthony Khawaja, who led the research, added: “We observed a doseresponse with our findings – in other

words, there was evidence for reducing chance of requiring future cataract surgery with progressively higher alcohol intake, but only up to moderate levels within current guidelines. “This does support a direct role of alcohol in the development of cataract, but further studies are needed to investigate this.” The NHS advises that men and women should not “regularly drink more than 14 units a week” in order to “keep health risks from alcohol to a low level”. Its advice also states: “If you drink as much as 14 units a week, it’s best to spread this evenly over 3 or more days”. If you’re concerned about your drinking or someone else’s, the NHS recommends seeing your GP.

Mercadona’s own brands - Hacendado, Deliplus and Bosque Verde – have gone from strength to strength in recent years with an array of products going viral during the pandemic as fans took to YouTube and TikTok to share their finds. Fans of the supermarket’s popular beauty range are delighted to learn that the Deliplus hair-drying turban is back on the shelves after a brief absence. The turban is made of microfiber and is designed to help drain the hair of excess moisture after washing, and is much gentler and less abrasive than conventional towel drying. The turban is priced at €2.70 and the idea is to wrap your hair in the microfiber garment,

secure it closed with the button and leave it in place before later drying your hair with a hairdryer and styling as normal. Shoppers are also on the lookout for Lidl’s

popular new footwear range. On sale from last Wednesday, March 31st, Lidl’s new range of super lightweight sports footwear claims to offer a ‘barefoot feel’. The shoes are priced at €9.99 and are expected to fly off the shelves as more of us are keen to get moving to shed those lockdown pounds before summer. The Lidl lightweight trainers are available for the whole family in men’s sizes, women’s and children’s, and all purport to offer the same lightweight comfort. The shoes are made predominantly with PHYLON, a moulded material which is durable let incredibly light.

I can't cope My two sisters and I had been told by my mother that we will be expected to look after my parents when they are old. We had not really taken it seriously, until now my parents are approaching their 80s. My eldest sister moved 8 hours away, and the youngest sister moved three hours 'away. I stayed local, married and have a career and have three demanding children, one who is downs syndrome. I am the one who my parents are focussing on to care for them. Although they are still active and can look after themselves, they do need help with the heavy work, gardening and maintaining the house. They call on me and my husband constantly to do these things, and also take them out for trips and run them to their hobbie groups, ‘so they can have a drink’. Mother and Father have planned well for their financial retirement but won't spend any money to do these things independently. All I get when I talk to them about things is that it’s our duty to look after them in their old age, and that they did they did the same for their parents. I am afraid we all resent the situation, but my sisters live far away and are not required to help, although they are supportive of me. Whilst it is clear that you care about your parents and want to make sure they don't go without help, you say they are active and able to deal with their own finances. I would bring someone round to help them to get the decorating done, and employ a gardener to take over the garden for them. They are not short of money so things like this can be paid for. Find a local taxi firm who will run your parents to their hobbie groups. You have enough on your plate. Be firm (but kind), otherwise nothing will change. Bring your sisters into discussions for support if needed. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. SARA READS ALL LETTERS AND CAN GIVE A PERSONAL REPLY. Women Fear the Bike and Scooter Only 12% of people choose sustainable mobility to get around the city. Men, 15%, and women, 10%. This is one of the main conclusions of the study presented by the chain of Midas workshops, #EllasConducenPorLaCiudad, and which is part of the #EllasConducen initiative, whose godmother is the motorcycle racer Ana Carrasco. By cities, the women of Zaragoza are the ones who most use sustainable means of getting around, 16%, followed by those of Valencia (13%), Bilbao (12%), Malaga (6%), Barcelona (8%) and, finally, Madrid (10%).

(9%) and Seville (8%) is the least.

Better by car Among women who drive, sustainable their favourite options are the hybrid or electric car (5%), the bicycle (4%), the scooter (2%) and the electric motorcycle (0.2%). In addition, 52% of the women surveyed admit that they would change their usual mode of transport for a more sustainable one, compared to 61% of men. 42% of the two groups, men and women, prefer a hybrid or electric car. This percentage rises to 90% among women who use combustion vehicles as their usual means of transport. They admit that they would change vehicles, but they do not do so because they believe it would be more expensive (68%) or because they consider that the city in which they live is not prepared for this type of vehicle (32%). Of the women who already use a sustainable vehicle, 47% admit that they would not change it, while 45% say they do so out of environmental awareness. In men, that percentage is 36%.

Fight pollution 56% of women consider that their cities are not taking sufficient measures to reduce pollution. By cities, Palma de Mallorca is the most critical (73%), followed by Madrid (62%) and Alicante (60%). Valencians (68%), Zaragoza (48%) and Malaga (40%) are those who believe that measures are being taken to combat pollution. It is precisely in these three cities where more sustainable vehicles circulate. In Madrid (9%), Bilbao

Fear of bicycles and scooters In general, women are more reluctant to use bicycles and scooters. In fact, there are differences by sex: 10% of men compared to 5% of women admit to using these means of transport on a regular basis. The cities with the greatest use of bicycles by them are, in this order, Valencia, Zaragoza and Seville. In addition, 65% of the women surveyed admit that they do not use a bicycle or scooter and the reasons are that other drivers put them in danger (61%) or are not sufficiently visible to other drivers (47%). Changes in mobility The pandemic has caused changes in the way we move in cities. According to the study, 43% of those surveyed admit that they avoid public transport; 28% acknowledge that they use the private vehicle more, and 28% indicate that they only go to places where they can walk. Murcianas (50%), Sevillanas (32%) and Madrid (31%) are the ones that have increased the use of private vehicles the most. In Alicante, 60% of the women surveyed admit that they only go to places where they can walk, while Madrid women are the ones who have chosen the most to use the taxi (11%). More respectful of the rules María José Aparicio, deputy director of Training and Road Education of the General Directorate of Traffic, defended the "just" empowerment of women also when they drive because accident data show that "we are good drivers." As she explained, in Spain,

there are 27 million registered drivers, 42% are women. However, in 2019, of the 1,139 deceased drivers, 90% were men. "Our behaviour is more respectful of the norm, something that is not only observed in the commission of infractions," she added. In this sense, she recalled the report on traffic accident victims produced annually by the Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences, according to which 45.5% of the deceased drivers analysed had the presence of drugs of abuse or psychotropic drugs: only 5% were women. Similar figures are also recorded in people who lose their driving licence due to loss of points (they must take awareness and re-education courses) or convictions for crimes against road safety. "Again, the presence of women is minimal," said Aparicio. #EllasConducen Midas has resumed this initiative after a few months of forced stoppage due to the pandemic. The objective of #EllasConducen is to end the clichés that surround women when it comes to driving. For this reason, they have chosen the motorcycle racer Ana Carrasco as the image of the campaign. Carrasco was the first woman to win a Supersport 300 grand prize. In addition, the campaign also includes a social purpose since it includes a collaboration with the NGO AyudaenAcción. Participating in the presentation of this study were Patricia Suárez, Midas Marketing Director; María José Aparicio, deputy director of Training and Road Education of the General Directorate of Traffic; Marta Marañón, representative of AyudaenAcción, and the racer Ana Carrasco.

Buckling up is Not a Thing of the Past The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) is launching a new media outreach campaign on the importance of wearing seat belts, at a time when indicators are showing less use. In 2020, with data on accidents that occurred on interurban roads within 24 hours, the percentage of deaths in passenger cars and vans that did not use said safety device increased from 22% to 26%. An increase that was also evident in the latest seat belt-use surveillance campaign that the DGT carried out between March 8 and 14, in which the number of drivers who were not wearing it increased by 7%, compared to the same campaign that was carried out last year. The campaign, announced by the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, in his appearance before the Road Safety and Sustainable Mobility Commission of Congress, can be heard on different radio stations and viewed on television, digital and social networks(#PareceCosaDelPasad o). The campaign aims to strengthen the idea that its use is the best life insurance when traveling by car. For this, the DGT has recovered

an advertisement that aired on television in 1973 and in which it was said: "for your safety, wear your seat belt"; a message that seems like a thing of the past ..., but it is not, since after almost 50 years, the DGT has to continue insisting on the importance of its use because in the XXI century, 1 in 4 deaths in traffic accidents are not wearing a seat belt at the time of the incident. This awareness-raising action is launched at a specific time surrounding the Easter period which there were no longdistance trips permitted. The perimeter closure restrictions in each of the Autonomous Communities that have been imposed in order to prevent the spread of the COVID19 virus, made trips short and circumscribed to the province or the autonomous community, depending on the cases, but not without risk. In fact, on March 19, in which there were also

perimeter closures in those communities in which this day was a public holiday, it became the second day of the year with the highest number of deaths (9 people lost their lives on the roads). With this campaign, the DGT wants to remind you of the importance of not lowering your guard on short trips, starting with the obligation to wear your seatbelt and continuing with the adoption of the other correct and respectful behaviour on the road. Second year without special operation Although this year there was no special Easter operation as we know it, the Traffic Management Centres that the DGT has throughout the national territory that are operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, may establish, if necessary, the relevant traffic management and ordering measures.

Elche CF, Easter “Lesley’s Myeloma Shield” Sunday Surprise 24th March at El Plantio This is the third yearwe have played for the Lesley’s Myeloma Shield with the daybeing sponsored by Geoff Ham; unfortunately, Geoff couldn’t make it over from England this year but still supported the day. We had eighteen players turnout this year compared to last year’s low numbers because of Covid. Due to travel restrictions, we moved courses to one of our favourable one, El Plantio; the weather was perfect for golf with sunshine from start to finish and temperatures in the mid-70s, for most shorts were the order of the day, even I introduced my little legs to the sun! Yet again the course was in very good condition, the format was singles full handicap Stableford split into two groups. Winner of the Myeloma Shield was Alan Freelove who came from group B with a magnificent 40 points, runner-up from group B was Derry Quinlan (HCP Secretary’s Friend) with 37 points. Winner of group A on count back was “Mr Amstel “Peter Kelly” with 35 points, runner up was “Three

Clubs” Sean McGuinness also on 35 points. Nearest the pins were won hole 4 and 18 “The Joker” Mick Billins, hole 8” Fish Called Wander” Mo Chaplin, hole 9 “Ave ago Golfer” Steve Day, hole13 “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness and hole 14 “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly. Best front 9 was Derry Quinlan with 26 points and best

back 9 was Alan Freelove with 26 points, the Two’s pot was not won so it will be €20 for next game. Photo shows Chairman Steve Day, presenting the shield to Alan Freelove on Geoff’s behalf. www.imanyogolfsociety.com imanyogolfsociety@gmail.com

On Easter Sunday, 17th placed Franjiverdes took on 7th placed Real Betis at the Martinez Valero. Umbrellas were needed by the media representatives pre kick off to alleviate the effects of the April Showers. All the teams below Elche CF had already played, so the match was a great opportunity for the team to gain points on their relegation rivals. On the other hand, a win for Betis would see them rise into a Europa League position. So much to play for, for both teams. The first upset came after 14 minutes. Verdu generated an unnecessary penalty by a late tackle, which Borja Iglesias converted into an impossible to save shot. The shock of being a goal down seemed to galvanise the Franjiverdes, although not quite enough for Dani Calvo to make use of a free kick close to goal. 14 minutes after scoring, Iglesia was substituted off due to injury. On the 36 minute the assist of the season was made by Tete Morente, who shimmy shimmied past 2 defenders before whipping the ball across the Betis goal mouth to the

waiting foot of Pere Milla, who simply redirected it over the goal line. Half time score one all. For some reason after 7 minutes of the second half, the Referrer gave a free kick just outside of the box. Elche CF employed a new tactic of have a player lying on the ground behind the wall, but it wasn't needed as the ball went high. A few minutes later another heart testing moment was experienced as the ball pingponged between the players in front of the Elche goal. The remained of the fixture passed with Elche displaying a high level of discipline and defending, whilst staying alert until the final whistle. A much needed point gained and an important boost to moral against Manuel Pellegrinis' Real Betis.

On Friday night at 21:00, Elche CF take on Huesca. This will be an interesting fixture as Huesca is now managed by Pacheta, the manager who coached Elche CF to their miraculous elevation to La Liga during the 2019/20 season as well as their promotion to Segunda during the previous season. He is an Elche legend who joined Huesca when they were bottom of La Liga, and has so far raised them to top of the relegation zone. As soon as spectators are allowed back into the stadiums, EuroTourGuide will once again be offering Coach Tours with Match Tickets to support Elche CF. TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Today’s mad ramblings will take the form of an Erling Haaland-shaped beauty parade and head all over the Premier League looking to find someone to love me. Will it be Manchester City? Not according to Peppy G, the championselect don’t have two pound coins to rub together this summer. Will it be Manchester United? Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might have the striker in a private WhatsApp chat, but you can’t really see Raiola wanting two of his clients underachieving at Old Trafford. What about Chelsea? They seem keener on bring Sergio Aguero to Stamford Bridge on a free than putting £250m big ones on the table - plus, they’re hardly guaranteed Champions League football yet, are they? One thing is for sure, Erling will be the talk of the summer, the proverbial football prom queen. Those early Saturday kickoffs post international football are always dull affairs, right? Chelsea’s Thiago Silva has achieved most things in football other than a decent performance against West Bromwich Albion. The Brazilian had a shocker on debut in the reverse fixture and didn’t fancy a full 90 on his return from injury in this one. As much as I am a fan of a smaller side sticking one in the pipe of the big boys, if it means a return of Smug Sham, then I am dead against it. Allardyce was in his absolute post-match element, predicting that ‘we won’t be last’ on Match of the Day and praising his players for following ‘his tactical plan’ to the letter. Tommy Tuchel’s side had not conceded a goal in about 700 minutes at Stamford Bridge, long enough for him to learn that playing Marcos Alonso in a back four is a recipe for disaster. Big Sam does get a lot of stick for his style of football but West Brom’s 4th (yes, that’s their 4th) was possibly the

goal of the weekend. So, Mikel Arteta is left taking the blame once again. Arsenal were blown away by Liverpool in the second half in what was probably Granit Xhaka’s finest game for Arsenal - because he wasn’t playing and was actually missed. Liverpool and England’s 5th choice right-back Trent Alexander Arnold seemed quite pumped for the game, creating Diogo Jota’s opening goal with a superb cross. However, the cross was nothing compared to Stuart Attwell’s haircut or Alisson’s tache both of which would have been a talking point individually had they not turned up in the same game. Liverpool’s defence looked secure, begging the question of what they could have achieved had King Klopp just picked central defenders no matter how far down the pecking order they were earlier in the season. Mind you, they’ll have enough next season with a £40m deal for Leipzig’s

Fernandinho’s wonder strike. Instead, it was Gabby Jesus who scored at Easter once more (insert your own gag here, folks - everyone else has). Manchester United were keen to get life back to normal after a week where they felt the need to confirm they wouldn’t be signing Aguero. So, Paul Pogba finally went to collect his Rolls Royce from the pound and United went behind in a Premier League match. We haven’t had the curse of the returning man for some time now, so it was nice to see Danny Welbeck notch against his former employers, following up after a top save by United’s number one (for the day) Dean Henderson. Mind you, with rumours that Solskjaer will pay David de Gea to leave this summer, Hendo might actually be number one next season. Naturally, the weekend after this ‘football writer’ moved Mason Greenwood out of his fantasy draft team having seen patience run out, he scored the winning goal.

Konate being sorted. Arsenal were just ‘mentally weak’ according to Ian Wright - but at least Martin Odegaard ended the weekend with a cup winner’s medal in his locker. Manchester City can sleepwalk to the title from here, needing just eleven points to lift the Premier League title. Sergio Aguero’s long goodbye got underway against Leicester, though his biggest contribution was getting in the line of

Spurs travelled to St James’ Park with both managers top of the wrong table the ‘next manager to get the bullet’ table popular with many a bookie. When Joelinton scored only his second goal in what feels like a lifetime to Newcastle fans, Tottenham fans would have feared the worst. Harry Kane managed to score two in three touches, but Steve Bruce’s team were never put to bed - like many an opposition to Mourinho’s side this

season. Not Jose’s fault though, you understand. Spurs have now dropped 15 points from winning positions, the 3rd highest in the Premier League this season - but it’s all down to the players, OK? Joe Willock, he on loan from Arsenal, took great pleasure in netting a late leveller - a goal that slows Mou’s Champions League push once again but can be considered quite a lifeline to Mike Ashley’s club. Brucey might even get a new contract this week as a result. One manager almost certainly not getting a new contract is Uncle Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace. It is believed that the grandfather of Premier League management will be let go at the end of the season with Palace drawing up a shortlist of managers to take the club forward - Frank Lampard, Sean Dyche and Swansea’s Steve Cooper. One out of three feels realistic on that list, but if Steve Parrish is looking in the Championship for his next gaffer then he wants to be taking a look at a former player now doing great things in the land of the Tykes - Valerien Ismael at Barnsley. For an oh-so-brief moment it looked like Scotty Parker’s Fulham side could enjoy some late chocolate egg action outside the Premier League relegation zone. Unfortunately, there were only eggs for the winners and that was Aston Villa - Trezeguet off the bench to get a brace and Ollie Watkins scoring late to remind Gareth Southgate not to forget about him before the Euros squad is picked. Leeds United won’t have too many easy days like this weekend, seeing off Sheffield United 2-1 thanks to Phil Jagielka toe-poking the winner past Aaron Ramsdale - a goalkeeper who must be sick of late, important goals flying past him after England U21s crashed out of the European Championships last week. I am sure not many of us had Southampton’s clash with Burnley down as a five-goal thriller and when Burnley led 2-0 early on, even fewer would have thought Southampton had the stomach for a comeback. Well, we were all wrong - Theo Walcott might have even nailed his most intelligent assist ever too.
