Briton arrested in connection with fatal

A

British man was arrested at the weekend in connection to the tragic death of a 27 year old woman in Benidorm. The woman, believed to be Scottish, fell to her death from a tenth floor balcony early on Saturday morning. The death was initially treated as accidental but a man has now been arrested as, according to Benidorm police, “A precautionary measure”. Police are trying to piece together the woman’s last movements. It is believed she left the apartment she was sharing with friends at around 4am, possibly became disorientated and proceeded, barefoot, to the room above her own where five other Britons were staying. The arrested man is believed to be part of the group staying in the apartment above the girl but was not known to the

deceased. The British man was arrested on Saturday and spent the night in custody, being questioned by police in relation to the incident. Sources close to the inquiry confirmed the arrest was 'precautionary’ and there was no evidence pointing to the woman's death being the result of a crime. The 27-year-old woman had travelled to the popular Costa Blanca resort with a group of around 35 female friends to celebrate a hen party. A source in Benidorm told the press, “The man who has been arrested is the one who opened the door to her and was near her when the incident happened.” It is believed that he was taken in for questioning because his version of events didn't quite match that given by the four friends he was with. An insider said, “The version of events recounted by the man taken into custody didn't quite match that of the others but they admitted to drinking heavily and taking drugs that night and it just wasn't possible for the police to take a formal statement from this person because of the state he was in.

“Once that formal statement has been taken investigators will be in a position to

Wednesday 3rd - 8th May 2017

Benidorm fall decide if they can formally rule him out of the inquiry.”

BITE SIZE Parents warned NEWS: to watch for signs Councillor Fanny Serrano has been approached about the possible siting of a giant ferris wheel in Torrevieja. The Dutch firm making the proposal have already established giant ferris wheels in major venues across Europe. The wheel could be similar to that of the London Eye being around 135 metres tall. The firm had already approached Benidorm with the suggestion, but without success. It’s believed that the most favoured setting for the structure would be the port area but this would require the agreement of the Valencian Government. Ports are generally chosen as the location and Malaga is an example of one Spanish city with a wheel in its harbour. Fairgrounds are another popular option, as demonstrated in Seville. There is no real indication whether Torrevieja will take up the offer or not.

A monument to the victims of the bombing A proposal has been made to the town council that there should be a monument in Torrevieja to honour and remind us of the victims of the Spanish Civil War. An aerial bombing on 25th August 1938 by Italian fascists left 19 victims dead and there is support for a monument to recognise the destruction and anguish it caused. However, the potential cost of such a memorial of €17,000 is being contested by some who feel that there are better ways of spending the money. The Continued on page 5

of deadly ‘Blue Whale Challenge’ A teenage girl in Spain who joined in the perilous 'Blue Whale' challenge on Facebook has been admitted to a psychiatric ward. Although she is the first case uncovered so far in Spain, parents are being warned to watch their youngsters closely. Said to have started in Russia and spread to the former Soviet States and then to Latin America, the foolhardy ‘challenge’ involves completing 50 tasks in 50 days, of increasing difficulty. These start off relatively easy, but by the 50th task the participant is ‘dared’ to attempt suicide and several teenage suicides have been detected as a result. In the case of the 15-year-old from Catalunya – whose exact location, or even province, have not been revealed – she had got around halfway through the 50 tasks and had completed the one which involves carving a giant whale into her arm. She was due to reach ‘task 50’ this summer, in which she was expected to attempt suicide. The ‘challenge’ operates on a chainmail system, in which participants are first dared by someone else who is part-way through the 50 days, and the newcomer is told that once he or she starts, they are not allowed to back out.

They start off with a ‘task’ as simple as drawing a blue whale on a piece of paper, and participants are expected to film themselves completing each task they complete. Then, they progress to being challenged, usually through by Facebook and chat apps on their mobiles, to spend 24 hours awake watching horror films, cut their lips, make a hole in their hands, and carving a whale into their arm with a knife. People from the girl’s high school – it is not known whether teachers or fellow pupils – raised the alarm when they saw she had been behaving in a ‘strange’ manner and then noticed the selfmutilation on her arm when she was in class. Catalunya's regional military police, the Mossos d'Esquadra, were alerted and the youngster has been placed in a psychiatric ward for her own safety.

At last! The new market is here

BITE SIZE NEWS: Continued from page 3 Ciudadanostown councillors have the deciding vote at the moment in the town hall and they are not convinced by the cost of this project. Although they agree that a symbolic remembrance would be appropriate it is suggested that a smaller plaque could be chosen with not such a high cost.

St. George’s day celebrated

Councillor Javier Manzanares announces the opening of the new Friday market

Yes, it’s official. The opening date for the new Friday market in Torrevieja is Friday 12th May. It’s been speculated on for years and the organisation of it hasn’t been easy but at last the final preparations have been made. Finally, the Councillor for markets, Javier Manzanares, made the announcement at a press conference on Thursday 27th April. Two bus routes, C and Mercado, will transport people to the new site on Avenida Delfina Viudes, next to the water park. The previous site was cramped and it was very difficult to park. The new site is a larger dedicated area where there shouldn’t be any parking problems. A large public car park is directly adjacent to the market and there is a separate parking area for the traders too. It is also expected that there will be better security as the area is enclosed and more easily patrolled by police. There will no longer be the labyrinth of streets, houses and shops for thieves to make their exit through. The market will be policed by the GRO and Protección Civil and a Local Police check point will also be available in the market office. The volume of people requires that the toilets will be cleaned two to three times during the Friday morning and there are two hundred bins positioned around the site. Office staff will be on hand in case there are any problems and there will also be a market inspector available every Friday.

The market stalls are arranged in blocks with rows from A to W. There is street lighting, drinking water, seven points of access, three blocks of public toilets and an office for town officials. On Avenida Monge and Bielsa, at the north point of the market, there is a taxi rank. Two bus routes can take people there and back. One is exclusively for access to the market and the second is route C which now also has a stop there. ‘In total there are 30 bus stops taking 30 minutes altogether,’ explained Councillor Manzanares. Traders’ vehicles can start arriving from 4 in the morning until 8 am but are not allowed on the site after this time. They then have from 2pm until 3.30pm to leave. No vehicles will be allowed to stay on the site. Council staff have worked hard to inform all 300 plus traders of their new pitch. Of course, there will be some teething problems as everyone settles into the new routines and familiarises themselves with the new area. However, it is hoped that it will mean a great improvement long term for both those selling and buying from the market. The new market explored Just in case you can’t make it on its first day of opening, Costa Blance People is going to visit the new market on 12th May. We’ll be reporting back on how to reach the market by bus and what you can expect to find there. Full report to come. Suzanne O’Connell

The Anglican Chaplaincy of St Peter & St Paul in Torrevieja celebrated St. george’s Day in style on Sunday 23rd April. The Campoverde Church held a celebration dinner in That Place restaurant in Campoverdeand took the opportunity to sing patriotic songs and enjoy a live performance from their priest, Father Richard accompanied by Mike Shail on the guitar. Maggie Dew from Campoverde Church said; ‘We are always looking for ways to provide more than just a church to our people in Campoverde and we thought that the celebration of the Patron Saint of England, combined with good food, good company and good entertainmentwould be a winning combination.’ It wasn’t just about celebrating the day but also raising money for the church and the community. Altogether €410 was raised during the evening and the money will be put to good use. If you would like to find out more about Campoverde Church you can see their Facebook page on www.facebook.com/campoverdechurch or you can find out about other Anglican churches in the area by visiting their website on www.c-of-e-torrevieja.com .

Final reminder for Neighbourhood watch The San Luis, La Siesta, El Chaparral Neighbourhood watch will hold their next meeting on Monday 8th May at 4.30pm at the Casa Ventura. Everyone living in these areas is welcome to attend and it is an important opportunity to ask questions and find out more about local issues. This could also be their last meeting unless someone is prepared to step forward and take on the role of new president.

San Luis health centre wins awards El Centro de Salud de San Luis has been complimented by the Joint International Commission for its high standards of care. This centre is one of the first in the Valencian community to obtain this internationally recognised accreditation. There are only seven other centres that have obtained this award in Spain. Dr. José Gregario Betancor is the coordinator of the centre; ‘We have worked very hard in implementing improvement plans in order to offer our patients the highest level of care.’ Altogether there are 112 standards Continued on page 6

Timeless Fashions BITE SIZE NEWS: charity Show

Joy has all the details

The inclement weather on Thursday did little to dampen the enthusiasm at the Timeless Fashions Fashion Show, held in aid of Maria and the Pink Ladies raising funds for the AECC. Entertainment before the show was provided by Simon Morton and Dan Davy from Sunshine FM with special guest singer Sinead, who certainly brightened the day with her great voice. The outfits, were showcased by local residents and several Pink Ladies and included: tops, trousers, dresses, separates and accessories. The ladies ignored the rain and cool temperatures, and donned sleeveless tops and summer dresses, risking the flu all in the name of charity. Boutique owner Joy did a wonderful job of explaining each outfit as it was displayed and the audience was impressed by the range on offer. The outfits all came from the new and

extensive collections now in stock at Timeless Fashions, which includes Joe Brown summer dresses, a wide selection of summer wear and ¾ trousers in an array of colours and ladies shorts. The boutique stocks sizes small to XXL and stock changes every 10 to 14 days, meaning there is always something new to tempt those who like to be in style. The event raised 600 euros for the AECC and the money will be used to fund the charities anti-cancer Early Detection Programme which provides subsidised cancer screening for prostate, breast and cervical cancer. Timeless Fashions can be found on the top floor of Punta Marina Commercial Centre, or on Facebook. Call 966 722 103 for further information.

More firefighters for Torrevieja The Provincial government has increased the overtime pay of Torrevieja’s fire fighters and also announced that more will be employed by the end of the year. The increase comes with the announcement that the fire station will be raised from the level of sub-station to a station in its own right. This means that the number of fire fighters can be increased from 34 to 55. The changes come following the demands made by the local firemen that they should be paid on a par with others in the service. Although these improvements have not been officially approved yet, the case is strong and they are very likely to go ahead. The Torrevieja station will have the title of Vega Sur and is part of the Southern Area zone. It will serve Torrevieja, Pilar de la Horadada, San Miguel de Salinas and Los Montesinos. The firefighters of Torrevieja have been claiming the need for an increase in the number of staff due to severe shortages with shifts only covered by six people. To present their case the firefighters painted their engines with slogans last week, to draw attention to their cause Suzanne O’Connell

Continued from page 5 which health centres are measured against according to five different sections. These include participation and integration into the community; services centred on the patient; management of services; improving quality andsafety for patients. The San Luis centre has obtained high results against the standards evaluated including the correct identification of problems with patients, effective professional communication, good practices around high riskmedicines and reduced risk of infection.

Semana Santa museum controversy The new Semana Santa museum was finished nine months ago. The museum, near the court rooms in Torrevieja, has five floors and three levels below ground. It is intended to house the floats used over the Easter period and other religious memorabilia. However, there is disagreement over how the space in the museum should be allocated. The coalition government in the town hall want some of the space to be used for town hall business. The manager of the Cofradías, the brotherhood groups in the town, wants the majority of the building to be dedicated to local religious groups. He is supported in this by the local PP party and Ciudadanos which means that voting is completely split down the middle. The building itself has cost six million euros but remains in limbo with this split in councillors’ voting. The coalition councillors would like to see part of the buildings used to house the Museum of the Sea and Salt as well as town hall administrative offices. The current proposals from the government would mean that 60% of the building was used for purposes other than religious ones, whereas the original plans when the building was agreed were for 40% to be dedicated to this. The building has been controversial from the start. Planned in 2010, when budgets were tight, many argued against such a large investment in the first place. Suzanne O’Connell

A happy reunion The animal shelter in Torrevieja was pleased to be able to reunite a dog, lost last spring, with its owner. The family had been looking for their lost Yorkshire terrier ‘Mesi’ throughout the summer but without success. The AWOL little dog turned up in Torrevieja’s animal shelter in good condition and having evidently been fed during the time she’d been away. Councillor Carmen Morate was in the shelter herself when someone brought in Mesi saying that they had found her a few days earlier. As the Yorkshire Terrier did have a microchip the councillor could find out information about her owners. The owners were evidently delighted to discover that their dog had been found after all this time. The family had long since given up hope of ever seeing her again. Her owner, Miguel Aráez, had been walking with Mesi in the street last spring but when he turned round the animal had disappeared. A search followed but there was no sign of her. Miguel was able to bring in the correct documentation to show that he is the rightful owner of Mesi. The reunion between owner and pet was just as tear jerking as you might imagine. The mystery is, where has she been all this time? She must have been looked after in someone’s house due to her good condition; she had even put on a little weight. The only problem following her year away was a slight ear infection spotted by the vet who updated her vaccines. Councillor Morate was delighted at being able to reunite the family and their pet and would like to remind people of the importance of having their animals chipped. Suzanne O’Connell

Improvements to the Paseo Marítimo de Cabo Roig The Department of Beaches, headed by Councillor Luisa Boné, is acting due to the urgent need to repair several sections of façade and coastal walk on the promenade of Cabo Roig. At the moment a works project is being carried out in the southern slope of Cabo Roig, specifically where the restaurant Torre Vigía is located. This improvement has been incorporated in the contract to generally secure the cliffs in that area. Councillor Luisa Boné, explained: “The descent is formed by a staircase that connects the lookout point (views of the nautical port) with the promenade. It was in a dangerous state of collapse, as numerous stones had been detached and many cracks could also be seen, predominantly caused by the roots of the trees.” Now that he poor state has been officially agreed, the contractors can carry out the works plan which consists of demolishing and cleaning all the descent and rebuilding the retaining wall of the

steps. Once the structure is safe and secure, the steps will be repaired and the remaining constructive details executed which are necessary for its safe use.

Spain’s history first hand The Asociación de las Rutas y Caminos de la Sal are the volunteers who help maintain the natural lakes and parks of La Mata and Torrevieja. However, sometimes they are released from their volunteering duties and have excursions themselves. On Saturday 29th April they were treated to a special trip to the Mueso de la Huerta in Rojales. The farm museum doesn’tusually open at the weekend but they made an exception to open their doors to the volunteers as there were more than 15 of them. The museum is a large detached house with stables full of ancient farm implements and furnished as in days gone by. ‘It was really interesting,’ says Crystal East, secretary to the group. ‘The Guide was superb and patiently explained everything to us during the tour which took about two hours.’ Following their enjoyable visit, the

volunteers will be back as usual helping ensure that the lakes and their surroundings are looked after and enjoyed. If you think you might be interested in joining this groups of volunteers you can email them at lamatavols@gmail.com Suzanne O’Connell

Charities working together through CARE The British community in Torrevieja is fortunate in the number and range of charities that are available to support them. Staffed by volunteers and sustained by fundraising, these charities can find themselves offering essential services where there are limited resources in the system or where language is a barrier. In the past, most of these charities have worked together independently. However, now there is a new initiative to help them collaborate and enable them to provide even better support to those who are dependent on them. CARE (Communication And Resource Exchange) brings together the presidents of different charities with the aim of sharing information, ideas and resources. The group was established by the President of HELP Vega Baja, Michele Masson, and CARE’s second meeting was held last week at Quirón salud hospital. ‘The group is working really well and the feedback has been positive,’ explained Michele. ‘It provides an opportunity for charities to share experiences and offer possible solutions to situations that others are facing.’ The number of charities who are joining the exchange is growing all the time but currently includes Cruz Roja, Age Concern, Samaritans in Spain, HELP Vega Baja, Help at Home, AFA, AFE, MABs, U3A, the British Consulate and Stroke support. ‘We have covered many issues even in the short period of time that we have been meeting,’ says Michele. ‘Decisions have been taken that we believe will make a

difference ultimately to those we aim to help.’ A charity awareness day is planned for later in the year where people will be invited to meet representatives from local charities in one venue to find out more about the charities and, of course, find out about volunteering too. ‘Volunteering is great,’ says Michele. ‘I am sure we all recommend it, but having responsibility for a charity can also be daunting so knowing that you have the support from not only your own team but others in similar situations is a bonus.’ Support with fundraising is also on the agenda. The different charities will help to publicise each other’s charity events as well as their own. So where another charity has an event coming up they will include details on their Facebook page, for example. Dates for your diary The sharing of events has already

started and some events for May and June include: • 11th May – Cruz Roja ‘Raising Awareness’ at La Marina Market • 16th May – Cruz Roja Open House in La Marina between 10am and 1pm • May 31st – Samaritans awareness day at La Zenia Boulevard from 10am to 9pm • 10th June – Age Concern Summer Fayre at 11am on La Siesta • 17th June – Samaritans Summer Fayre at 10am in Punta Marina shopping centre This is a very positive initiative for British people living in the area and along with stronger links with Torrevieja town hall, charities can be even more assured that they are able to help. ‘Rather than working in isolation, we’re coming together to see how we can support each other, which ultimately will mean that those people in the community that need support from any of our charities will benefit,’ says Michele.

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE The presidential election last weekend in France went a long way to restoring investors' confidence in the euro. Although it was only the first of two ballots it laid to rest the market's fear that French voters might be faced with a choice between two overtly anti-EU candidates in the run-off on 7 May. Rightly or wrongly investors now assume that Emmanuel Macron will end up in the ÉlysÊe Palace and that future of the euro will be assured. Investors paid little attention to the economic data coming out of the States. Their focus was squarely on the White House, where Donald Trump was coming to the end of his first 100 days as president and was keen to come up with something to mark the occasion. He did, imposing a 20% tax on softwood imported from Canada and "the biggest

tax cut in history" that is supposed to help small businesses and middle class incomes. The president also said that he will not, after all, kill the North American Free Trade Agreement. None of these did much for the dollar. Although the tax reforms would probably be positive for the currency, investors have little or no confidence that they can be steered through a Republican Congress that is resistant to increased borrowing. The single currency leapt higher when the Far East opened for business on Monday morning and it has been able to hold onto most of that gain. Against sterling the euro is half a cent higher on the week and it has added one and a half US cents. Among the major currencies the pound took third place, strengthening by an average of 1.2%.

Pensions headache?

Where you can go for help to make sure you are on the right retirement road

I

f you have only a matter of months left either before retirement or when you can access your pension, experts suggest digging out information about your individual pension plans, tracing any lost or old ones and asking pension providers for an up‐to‐date statement showing the value of your funds. We at Seagate can help you trace your pensions, free of charge, and with Transfer Out Values at an all‐time high, now is the time to act. You can expect any company you have pension savings with to issue ‘retirement risk warnings’ when you decide on withdrawing money from a pension. Financial advice

Speaking to a professional financial adviser will help those who have complex arrangements – several pension pots for example. There is more potential than ever to shape your retirement to be the way you want it. But at the same time there are more ways to get it wrong and do irreversible damage to your income in the later stages of life. Consulting an adviser should be considered essential. Speaking to an adviser can give you the confidence that you are doing the right thing with your money and can ultimately lead to higher income in retirement – often by thousands of pounds a year, outweighing the cost of advice. This is still true for those with modest pensions. There will usually be something you haven’t thought of, or an opportunity you’ve missed or a problem you never considered. The adviser knows what to look out for, so can flag these up. We appreciate you’ve worked hard to create a lifestyle that you want to maintain throughout your retirement. We can help you achieve this by delivering individually tailored pension solutions. Give us a call on 965 704 338 to book a free no‐obligation appointment in our Benijofar office. Springtime is a good time to not only check on your Perennials, but to divide them as well. These are plants that live for more than two years, which is great, as they provide you with vegetables/fruit year upon year - as long as they are tidied up a bit and not left abandoned. However, some of them can live for only a few years and others for a long time.

The Apricot - (Prunus armeniaca) named because it is believed that they originated in Armenia. They have also been grown in Iran for many centuries and dried, which is a favourite way of eating them for the locals. The Apricot tree generally is small and only grows to a height of around 39 feet tall (maximum) and the trunk is about 16 inches in diameter. You can have many or just the one as they do not need other trees for pollination - they can do it themselves! When you plant your tree make sure you cover over the base and roots with soil, patting it down as you go along, as with most other plants/trees. They bloom earlier than most other fruits, so if there is an early frost, be careful of them, plant on a higher part of soil in your garden if at all possible. If your apricot tree gets frost on it and there are flowers, it will kill these off and therefore the tree will produce hardly any fruit at all if any. The fruit has one central stone to it with the seed inside this, for replanting, if you want to start from scratch!

It would possibly be better to plant it in September, before the autumn, so that it has long enough to take root before the winter comes along. They neither like the extreme cold nor heat, so don’t put it in an area all on it’s own, have other things growing around it to protect it. If you want to have

large fruit on your tree you need to pick them as they grow to keep them apart from one another - about two inches apart should do the trick. A beautiful plant that should be showing off at the moment is from the Asteraceae family and is known as the Rhodanthemum catananche. Its flowers have peach coloured petals with silvery leaves and are blooming right now and will go through to the summer too. I have seen them on the side of the roads and they are

glorious. They are quite hardy as originated from the Atlas mountain range of Morocco and Algeria, so can withstand our winter season as well as the summer. It normally blooms in early May but of course this depends on the weather and it can either come a few weeks earlier or later. Lastly for this week a few things to do: - Don’t forget to pick off any dead parts of plants now as the frost looks to have gone and then they can start their regrowth once again. Everything should have been planted by now that warrants it and well watered to get the roots growing before the heat of the sun really kicks in. Any plants that require feeding should be fed now too, basically great care of plants as they start their new lifecycle. Clear out any old seed packets (past sell by date), broken plant pots (unless wanted for mosaics or edging for boarders), bits of old broken hosepipe and so on. Make sure all gardening tools are clean and sharpened and put in a safe place away from youngsters who may cause themselves harm. Marc Vijverberg

ITV show features local band, Just Brass

After a successful visit from BBC news last year to speak to and listen to JB Brass Band, word has spread about the little ‘band’ of expats. Last month saw the Band welcome ITV and the Tonight Programme to one of their concerts. Four members of the Band and their Musical Director Brian Webber, spent a relaxed afternoon with the film crew and presenter Fiona chatting about life in Spain, life post Brexit and what the Band means to them.

The film crew then set up ready to film the Band during a concert for their BBb Bass player, Carl's 70th birthday with his Norwegian family and friends. Meanwhile the Band is working

towards concerts in May and on June 24th, welcoming the famous 'World Champion Whistler' David Morris (as seen on

This has always been their greatest asset. Puerto Vallarta’s heart beats in every rooftop, garden and street of this beautiful city that once was a mining town in the 19th Century called “Las Peñas”. Puerto Vallarta is one of the most exceptional places in Latin America due to its biodiversity. Explore its beautiful tropical vegetation which covers its mountains and shelters hundreds of species of birds, orchids, and wildlife such as the ocelot, the jaguar and the iguana. T

discriminating palate, and nightlife that abounds with many world-class nightclubs. Beaches Bahia de Banderas is a water paradise. Surf is calm year-round so you can practice a lot of activities at the beach, from bungee jumping over the Pacific and windsurfing to whale watching and SCUBA diving. In the south, mountains are higher and thus beaches less accessible as they stretch among small inlets, rocks, and falls, creating private paradises. Playa Mismaloya, John Houston's chosen paradise, and Boca de Tomatlan are the only ones you can reach by road and, even though this implies some development, both are great to relax and swim. Here you find some seafood and taco restaurants and you can hire boat transportation to other beaches in the south: beautiful Yelapa, Las Animas, and Quimixto. Golf Besides outstanding beaches, the Vallarta area features many championship courses. In recent years, Puerto Vallarta has become one of the most important golf venues in Mexico. Several hotels have agreements or memberships so guests can practice their swings in the most renowned places in the zone. If you think that golf is a fundamental part of a leisure trip, you will surely choose Puerto Vallarta. Do not forget to visit the specialized Golf link in this Web Site. Culture Puerto Vallarta has been able to evolve harmoniously, combining its deep roots of Mexican tradition with the most innovative forms of art and entertainment. This combination of tradition and modernity, added to the beauty of the area, has been an endless source of inspiration for artists and creative souls. Puerto Vallarta is a place that invites its visitors to enjoy artistic expression that can be found all around, from traditional art festivals, which showcase scenic and plastic arts from local, national, and international artists, to art walks, organized by the various art galleries, with the latest works by both renowned and up-and-coming artists.

Behaviour getting worse

I think I might be gay

My two daughters will not accept my partner. Their mother and I split several years ago when the girls were young. I’ve been with my new girlfriend for 5 years and things haven’t got any better. They deliberately ignore her when they come to stay, and have me at it all the time when they know I am spending romantic time with her. Recently they knew it was our anniversary meal and decided to ring and text all the way through the night.

I am 12 and I like girls more than I like boys. I don’t want to say anything to my parents because Dad thinks being gay is wrong. Mum is ok about it though. There’s an older girl at school who I really like and all I do is think about her. I think she is beautiful. It is quite possible you know your own feelings even at 12. Do keep in mind that we all go through lots of different emotions at your age, and this crush on the girl at school may just be a phase. Or, of course it may not be, and you could grow older without these feelings going away, and that's ok. However I would suggest just seeing how things develop for now. You should be having fun at your age, and not worrying too much about your sexuality. Take things slowly and don’t rush in to revealing all to your Dad just yet. If you feel you can talk to your Mum, then have chat with her about these feelings.

Sit these two girls down and tell them that you are going to have one serious conversation with them, and they need to comply otherwise their relationship with you will be in jeopardy. I assume they are growing up now so you can focus on them becoming women, and point out that such behaviour is very immature and will not be tolerated. You will have to be very firm with them and set boundaries for things like phone calls. Another time, if you don’t want to be disturbed tell them you are switching your phone off. Compensation for family of teacher killed by pupil with a crossbow Catalunya’s regional government has agreed to pay compensation to the family of a supply teacher murdered by a 13-year-old pupil two years ago. Abel Martínez, in his 30s and only a week into his placement at Barcelona's Joan Fuster high school in the northern neighbourhood of La Sagrera, was fatally shot with a crossbow when he tried to protect a female teacher. The pupil had arrived late for school, at around 09.15, on 20th April, 2015 and without warning or preamble, he fired the crossbow at the teacher who opened the door, injuring her face, then targeted her daughter, a pupil in the class. Martínez rushed to the teacher's aid when he heard her screams, but was shot and killed as he shielded her. The youngster threatened a second-year pupil in another classroom, but was stopped by the PE teacher who calmed him down and persuaded him to lay down his weapons – which included a knife – before the child broke down sobbing in his arms. According to the heroic PE tutor, the teen claimed he had been ‘hearing voices’ and ‘wanted them to stop’. He is thought to have been suffering psychotic hallucinations and had been

prescribed medication, but had not taken it that day. As he was under 14 at the time, under Spanish law he could not be considered criminally liable and could not be charged or face any penalty. He was due to be placed in a children’s rehabilitation centre where he would be given special education and counselling, and be monitored closely by a child psychiatrist. Details of his fate – and even his name – have never been revealed because he is not only a minor, but criminally immune. Abel’s parents and brother commenced civil action against the regional education department after it declined to respond to their request for compensation to the tune of €1 million. They cited poor security at the school, saying authorities had failed in their duty of care towards its teachers. The Regional High Court of Justice upheld their claim, saying the school was legally responsible for the pupil whilst he was on the premises and that control and security measures

had, by default, been breached – the death of the teacher, from the neighbouring province of Lleida, spoke for itself in determining the education authorities’ strict liability, under the legal principle of res ipsa loquituur. Abel was given the Great Cross of Alfonso X The Wise, an award presented by his alma mater Lleida University, as a posthumous tribute, and a faculty has been named after him. Education union leaders and members held a demonstration last week to mark the second anniversary of Abel’s tragic murder. The regional government, jointly with student-teacher unions, has been working on a set of procedures to prevent and mitigate violence in the classroom, and expects to be able to bring it into effect next month.

Spanish coast guard crews are working hard to clean up a three-kilometre (1.9mile) long diesel slick off the holiday island of Gran Canaria after a passenger ferry accidentally slammed into a pier. The ferry carrying 140 passengers smashed into a breakwater in the port of Las Palmas, the capital of Spain's Canary islands off the northwest coast of Africa. Thirteen people were injured and the crash damaged underwater fuel pipes, the regional government said in a statement. Video footage on Spanish television showed chunks of concrete falling onto the port. Emergency crews managed to collect half of the roughly 60,000 litres (16,000 gallons) of diesel that spilled into the ocean, the regional government said. Three coast guard boats were working to break up the slick - which is three kilometres long and half a kilometre wide - to help the diesel evaporate, it added. “Work on the spill is continuing and we hope that it will all have evaporated soon. Experts do not believe there is risk to the environment,” Fernando Clavijo, the president of the regional government, said in a tweet. Beaches around Las Palmas and Telde, the two main towns on Gran Canaria, were closed at the weekend as a precaution, the regional government said. Repairing the pier will cost around two million euros and take six months, it added. Ferry operator Naviera Armas said the accident was caused by a technical fault that sparked a power cut on the boat.

LET’S SING! LEARN TO Child poverty high SING HARMONY IN A DAY in Spain A new report shows child poverty rate in Spain third highest in the EU and the United Nations children’s arm UNICEF has urged Spain to take emergency

measures to protect its young from the effects of climate change, warning that the western Mediterranean country is one of Europe's most at-risk nations because of its being such a dry terrain. Whilst home to lush, verdant mountains, pastures and forests, Spain also houses deserts and some of its provinces are in danger of further desertification caused by deforestation. Also, the ongoing drought coupled with the habitual intense summer heat is expected to be exacerbated over the coming decades by global warming. “Spain's nine million children will

inherit an uninhabitable country if action is not taken quickly,” is UNICEF's dramatic warning. It has called for the nation's youngest residents to be the central priority in the Spanish government's future Climate Change Law. The Spanish UNICEF Committee’s managing director Javier Martos and childhood policies leader Maite Pacheco recently presented the organisation’s report entiled ‘The impact of climate change on childhood in Spain’, and warned that global warming is ‘a growing and unprecedented threat’ for youngsters. “Spain is the most vulnerable country in Europe to global warming, and if the international community does not make real efforts in reducing emissions in the next few years, temperatures will rise by up to 5ºC by the middle of the 21st century,” Sra Pacheco and Sr Martos said. “If this happens, 80 percent of mainland Spain and Portugal will be desert. The effects of global warming will transform the economy and physionomy of the country, leaving the population open to more freezing cold snaps and heat-waves, extreme temperatures – hot and cold – rising sea levels, lack of drinking water and greater air pollution.” “We really need to think about what kind of country we're leaving, and want to leave, to our children,” Pacheco concludes.

Know you can sing but scared of looking stupid? Want to sing but don’t know where to start? Sang at school but lost confidence? Been told you can’t sing? Or just want a change from Karaoke and don’t know how? Help is at hand! The Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS) is offering a free “LEARN TO SING HARMONY IN A DAY” course on Saturday, 20 May 2017 in LOS ALCÁZARES Gain invaluable experience from members of SABS triple gold medallists, Spangles Ladies’ Harmony Chorus, and their Musical Director, Wendy Grant. Learn the techniques to help you to improve your singing. "This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to improve the quality of their voice and to learn about singing four-part harmony", comments Wendy. “Those with lower voices are particularly welcome as, in our experience, they have often been

told in the past that they can't sing, which is usually far from the truth.” SABS President, Lyn Baines, says “We will learn a new song together and in the afternoon we will perform it for friends and family. Our method of teaching has been really successful both in the UK and in Spain, and we are expecting an enthusiastic response.” There are limited places available, so make sure that you contact Lyn Baines by Sunday, 30 April to secure your place - call 968 334 527 or 968 574 987 or email president@sabs.es now. Corruption protest at PP HQ

Hundreds of people gathered in front of the Madrid headquarters of the ruling Popular Party (PP) to protest political corruption in the wake of new revelations of alleged scams by former regional government officials. Marchers banged on pots, yelled “the PP is not a party, it’s a gang,” and raised signs bearing messages such as “Your envelope, my cut,” alluding to under-the-table cash bribes paid out by businessmen in exchange for government contracts. The protest began at 8pm and was organised through social media, bypassing the administrative channels used for filing official demonstration requests. As such, it was not authorised by the government; the latter had warned ahead of the event that attendees could face fines under Spain’s new Citizen Security Law, popularly referred to as the Gag Law because of its crackdown on public protest.

Sanctions for attending unauthorised demonstrations, as long as no more than 20 people show up, are typically around €600. But the new legislation leaves the door open for tougher fines depending on how the event plays out. Refusing to ‘break up an unauthorised gathering in a place of public transit’ when ordered to do so by relevant authorities could entail fines of up to €30,000. On the same day as the protest, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy made his first statement in connection with the string of new scandals affecting his party, which have already led to the arrest of former Madrid premier Ignacio González and pushed party veteran Esperanza Aguirre out of politics altogether after more than three decades at the center of Spanish public life. “You do the crime, you do the time, as we are witnessing,” Rajoy said at an informal meeting with journalists inside the Spanish ambassador’s residence in

Montevideo, Uruguay, where Rajoy is on a Latin American tour that first took him to Brazil. But that was as far as the Spanish leader, renowned for his ability to avoid thorny questions about domestic issues, would go. Prodded by reporters to expand on the matter, Rajoy added: “I really respect her decision.” He also said that he will do “whatever the courts say” when the time comes for him to provide witness testimony in the Gürtel trial, a massive bribes-forcontracts scheme affecting the PP. It is unclear at this date whether Rajoy will have to physically take the witness stand or whether he will be allowed to file a written deposition. Rajoy’s main message was that it would be “a serious mistake” to generalise and suspect the entire political class of corruption. He said he feels sure that the latest scandals will not affect the stability of his minority government, and that Spanish citizens are mostly concerned about economic recovery. Concerns over corruption during Spain’s protracted economic crisis were instrumental in the emergence of new political parties Podemos and Ciudadanos. Unfortunately, the political fracture led to two inconclusive general elections and 10 months of stalemate, after which Rajoy just barely managed to win a reinstatement.

Five Avoidable Mistakes Buyers Make Rebecca Serwotka Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! When searching for your dream home, there are a few common mistakes that you, the buyer, make which can ultimately jeopardize losing out on the purchase of your future home in Spain. Here are 5 errors that are easily avoidable: 1. “We don’t have to decide right now. If it’s meant to be, it’ll still be waiting for us.” Thinking this is a big mistake, and whilst there are a good selection of homes to choose from, there are also a lot of serious buyers and investors out there, that are also looking at the same properties as you. So by the time you’ve made your decision, it could be too late! 2. Aesthetics – Do you care too much for curb appeal? Hey, everyone would like a home that screams “look at me,” but not everyone has the funds or imagination to be able to transform a bland entrance into Buckingham Palace! Don’t drive past with your foot to the floor! This could be the “hidden gem” you’ve been looking for. Go on, stop the car and get out. Go inside and have a look. There are a lot of properties that are very deceiving from the outside, and need to be viewed from the inside, to appreciate everything it has to offer. 3. Don’t look at so many houses! Years ago, well not that many actually, buyers

used to look at three or four homes, then decide which one to buy. And buy they did! Now there are some buyers that view far too many homes, and have even admitted to have seen between 40 and 60 houses! In the end, they didn’t buy anything, because they were just too confused. The more you look at, the more confusing it becomes. You need to make sure you’ve relayed to your Real Estate Agent, exactly what you’re looking for, and let them narrow your search down for you. Looking at four or more, you’ll never be sure. Look at three or less, you’ll find happiness! 4. It’s not all about the cash! Yes cash talks, but even if you need a loan, you could still negotiate a good deal. As long as you’re a good candidate for a mortgage, or have even been pre-approved, you can make an offer and complete in a few months. It may suit a seller better anyway, as they may need extra time to arrange the move while the bank is sorting out your funds. So don’t let it stop you putting your offer forward. 5. How to make an offer. Okay, so if you’re a British buyer, and the exchange rate may not be all that you were hoping for, but putting in an offer needn’t be an embarrassing time, so don’t feel ashamed if your offer is a little lower than you’d have liked. This is the best time to use your Real Estate Agent, and let them do the negotiations for you. You, as a buyer, need to be open, and as up front as possible with your Agent when making your offer, so they will be able to make a good case for you. You need to remember, the only person stopping you from making your dreams a reality, is you! Think property? Think us, because life’s complicated enough!See our advert in the centre pages of this newspaper. www.homes4u.es

CostaBlancaPeople 3rd - 8th May 2017

or the last thirteen years, the team at the Costa Blanca People have been ardent supporters of local charity work, recognising the importance of fundraising and voluntary activities on the Costa Blanca. Through events such as the Costa Blanca People Pride of Spain Awards, we have always championed the impact of charity work within the local community. Raising funds and awareness for animals, children, illnesses, support for expats, help for the elderly, the homeless, culture, libraries – you name it, there are expats here on the coast giving up their free time to raise money. The Pride of Spain Awards is the only event of its kind here on the Costa Blanca to offer recognition to local people who have gone that extra mile for their community

here in Spain. And that’s what this Charity News Roundup is all about – shining a spotlight on those who have used their talents, generosity, kindness and courage to make this community, our community, one in which we are all proud to live. It has become a phenomenon in the expat community in Spain that if there is an individual or group in need, a charity seeking support or a campaign that needs to be pushed, the expat community rallies round, puts their hands in their pockets and puts their money where their mouth is. As such, we are delighted to dedicate even more space in your

Fabulous Charity Concert on Friday

A concert featuring In a Harmony Chamber Choir, the Mediterranean Symphony Orchestra and conductor Nigel Hopkins will take place this Friday 5th May in the Centro Ecumenico church in Calle Diamante, La Zenia. Following last year's hugely successful concert of Vivaldi's Gloria, the featured work this year is the famous, well-known JOHN RUTTER REQUIEM, which is the most

performed Requiem in the world at this time. The concert will include many liturgical 'pot boilers', plus solos and duets from the Costa's two leading sopranos, Verity Hall and Mary Beer. Tickets are available from La Ponderosa Gift Shop at La Zenia, and the concert is supporting the church funds. This may prove a classic concert for real music lovers. Happy listening!

The Good Old Days The members of Campoverde Theatre Group are pleased to offer another great evening of entertainment. Come and enjoy our supper show, when we will pay homage to that classic BBC programme The Good Old Days, which is currently being broadcast on BBC4 television every Friday evening. Just like

the television programme our compare who has been busy finding long words and flowery language, just like Leonard Sachs. The show is full of famous Olde Time songs that you will have learnt from

your parents and grandparents, and you will be encouraged to join the company and have a good sing along to these old standards. The show will have something for everyone, singing, dancing, humour and even a little magic. Olde Tyme Music Hall was one a classic type of British theatre that made many stars house hold names in the days before television. Help at Home has been selected as the chosen charity for this show. This excellent local charity provides invaluable help to local people in times of acute need. People supported by Help at Home include those who are ill, people who need short term help, transport to health services, hospital visiting; and much more. Come along and help us raise funds for this very worthwhile charity. Although it is not essential, it is hoped that people get into the spirit of music hall and dress up in their own interpretation of Old Tyme costume, there will be a prize for the best outfit!

FINAL SAILING FROM RESTAURANTE EL ALTO LA DOLORES For over 3 years Restaurante El Alto La Dolores, in Guardamar, have hosted charity fund-raising nights each month, and the owners donated a Mediterranean Cruise as 1st prize in each raffle. Recently there was a change of ownership, and a change of objectives and values. These fund-raising nights were organised by Marlene Brown and Joan Rampton, on behalf of the Restaurant, and they are saddened by the loss of this lovely venue. Not to be thwarted by such a 'minor detail', the organisers, were keen to continue their fund-raising efforts, which were raising an average of 850 euros each month, for local charities. Two events were arranged with the owner of a new bar in Torrevieja, Restaurante Don Calvito, but the capacity is limited, and from June this year, organisers will

be holding monthly charity nights at, and on behalf of, Quesada Fish & Chips. This newly refurbished restaurant, is already very popular with customers from a very wide area, and this new partnership is bound to be very successful in providing quality entertainment, coupled with excellent value cuisine, and most importantly, raising lots and lots of money for the very deserving charities in our local area. The last cruise winner was Larry Pereira, from Formentera. And this event raised 480 euros for Torrevieja Stroke Support. Entertainment was provided by Danny Fisher, with a Rock 'n' Roll night, and including his tribute to Elvis.

ANIMAL RESCUE NEEDS RESCUING! Andrea's Animal Rescue and the Henrietta Foundation are desperately seeking funding to continue their unending challenge of rescuing ill treated donkeys, and other equines. The charity based in Murcia was set up in 2008 and is presently overwhelmed with mistreated, injured and abandoned donkeys and other animals, so they are trying to raise 100,000€ to purchase further land to add to the premises they already have. The charity is funded by Andrea and her husband Kevin, and by the generous people who donate money and items to support 2 charity shops manned by loyal volunteers in Roldan and Mazarron, plus auctions set up on social media, but with Vets bills costing up to 3,000€ for a severely injured donkey, and in excess of 9,000€ a year for feed, bedding, farriers fees, livery and much more including the running and maintenance of transport, they are struggling to raise the money needed to buy extra land. They have helped many injured and

distressed donkeys, mules and ponies. One in particular the smallest and thinnest donkey they have seen was being ridden by 3 drunken youths, whilst being beaten by a fourth until the donkey collapsed. This poor animal was saved by a witness who actually paid the owner for the donkey and then contacted the charity. Another donkey was literally being eaten alive by a pack of dogs and had a 25 cm hole in his thigh, and had to be hospitalised. He was treated at the Hospital Veterinario San Vicente, in Alicante, who provide enormous help and support to the charity. These are just a small example of cases the charity has dealt with, and there are many more out there waiting for someone to help them. The Charity also works with Seprona the animal welfare section of the Guardia Civil and is on call for USECO in Cartagena, the animal welfare section of the Police Local. At the moment any abandoned donkeys, mules or ponies

reported to them have to be fed and watered, if possible, where they are found, so the purchase of more land is becoming more and more critical. The most recent case being a donkey abandoned in the fields just outside of Cartagena which they travel to on a daily basis with food and water. With extra land they can provide permanent sanctuary to animals that cannot be re homed due to their earlier mistreatment and injuries. For example one donkey totally blind, another with an eye missing, several with hooves so overgrown for so long that they have deformed legs and difficulty in walking. Re homing is another issue as Spanish legislation is making it more and more difficult for anyone to adopt or foster equines. At the moment they are overwhelmed. Apart from the 21 donkeys, mules and ponies at the Rescue Centre they have several in livery, and foster care and at least 8 donkeys and ponies on a waiting list. They want

to help them, but they desperately, desperately need more land. The Charity has also helped many dogs suffering in the Murcia area. One dog “Toby”was found in Los Vivancos. He was a bundle of skin and bone weighing no more than 5kgs, and suffering from Leishmania a parasite infection caused by sandflies. He was so ill he had to have 24 hour care, but after 4 months Toby now weighs a normal 15kgs, and although he still has health issues and will be on medication for the rest of his life he is a happy boy, as he now has a forever home with Andrea and Kevin. Since 2008 they have re homed hundreds of dogs. Many in Spain, and the UK and also many in collaboration with other associations in Germany, Holland, France, Belgium, Ireland and Canada and the USA. Andrea's Animal Rescue and Henrietta Foundation's aim is also to educate families and children in the care and treatment of animals, by arranging open days and activities to provide more

understanding and to help stop the continuing mistreatment of animals. Take a look at their Facebook page www.facebook.com/andreasanimalresc ue to see the tireless work they do. Ryanair cabin crew recruitment drive Low-cost airline Ryanair is now recruiting in Spain. Starting from last Thursday (27th April) and running until the end of May, the initiative seeks to recruit new cabin

crew for the carrier’s flights. Road-shows will be held in Málaga, Granada, Valencia, Sevilla, Barcelona and Madrid in a bid to take on more staff as part of its plan to expand the payroll by 3,550 over the course of 2017. In addition to 2,000

cabin crew members, Ryanair wants to employ 1,000 pilots, 250 aircraft engineers and will promote 300 in-house officials. The Irish carrier currently holds bases in 84 European airports and, even though it has admitted its future investment in the UK is uncertain in light of Brexit, this is proving no barrier to its continent-wide growth. Those seeking jobs as a cabin crew members do not need any previous experience, as they will be fully trained once taken on, and the package includes major travel perks. Anyone interested can register via the website: Crewlink.ie. Anyone who wants to enquire in person should head to: Granada on Wednesday, 3rd May ; Barcelona on Thursday, 4th May; Madrid on Wednesday, 10th May; Málaga or Sevilla on Friday, 19th May; Valencia on Thursday, 25th May, or Madrid or Barcelona on Friday, 26th May.

Velazquez canvas sold for 8m in Madrid A painting that had been in the same family for generations and was only recently credited to Spain's famed artist Diego Velazquez was sold last week in Madrid for eight million euros, auction house Abalarte said. The “Portrait of a girl”, which portrays a young girl with large, sad eyes, her hands held together as if in prayer, is believed to be an early work by the Sevillian artist best known for his masterpiece ‘Las Meninas’, on display in Madrid's Prado Museum. It is believed to have been painted by Velazquez around 1616 or 1617, when the artist was only 17 or 18 years old and still living in the southern Spanish city of Seville, the auction house said. It had been in the same family for several generations but had never been properly analysed until the owner decided to sell it. Richard de Willermin, a specialist on 17th century Spanish art who collaborates with the auction house, examined the small oil on canvas painting and concluded it was by Velazquez.

Iberdrola profits down due to pound weakness Spain’s largest power company, Iberdrola, has posted a fall in its first quarter net profit, partly due to the weakness in the pound following Britain’s decision to exit the European Union. The company, which generates over a quarter of its earnings in Britain where it owns Scottish Power, said its net profit in the January to March period dropped 4.7 percent over the same time last year to hit 827 million euros. That is slightly above the average for the period of 824 million

Bars & Restaurants

The company said its results in Britain were also hurt by the closing of Scottish Power's thermal plant in Longannet in March 2016. This affected the quarter-onquarter comparison, as well as being affected by growing competition in the customer market in Britain. Britain has been closing coal-fired plants ahead of a 2023 deadline for compliance with new EU rules on air quality.

Specialists at the Prado Museum have also looked at the painting, but the museum has not commented publicly as it never gives any opinion about works that are not part of its own collection. The painting’s starting price had been eight million euros, Abalarte said, but there was no higher bidding. The identity of the buyer was not revealed, but the painting is banned from leaving the

country by order of the government, which prohibits any work that could be part of Spain's heritage from being taken abroad. A slow and meticulous worker, Velazquez is thought to have painted fewer than 200 works in his entire career. About 120 survive to this day, roughly half of them in the Prado.

EIGHT METRE SHARK CAUGHT IN CALPE A fisherman in Calpe, on the north Costa Blanca, got more than he bargained for when an eight metre basking shark became caught in his net. The four ton fish, which became trapped in fishing nets sixteen miles from port, was at first mistaken for a whale due to its enormous size. The skipper was unable to free the animal and due to its weight could not lift it on board. The animal, which is

considered an endangered species, was still alive when the fisherman brought it to shore but it died shortly afterwards. Two young biologists poured water from the sea on the shark’s gills, but as the animal was already dying, it was impossible to save him. Technicians from the Oceanogràfic of Valencia will be in charge of carrying out an autopsy on the animal’s remains.

Brussels terror suspects arrested in Spain Police in Barcelona have arrested four people accused of having links to the terrorist attacks carried out last year in Brussels at the city’s airport and on the metro system. The operation, which took place recently, is ongoing but has already netted eight arrests. The group being targeted is alleged to be linked to jihadist terrorism and organised crime. The Catalan regional police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, have carried out 12 property searches in Barcelona and in a

number of locations in the metropolitan area, including L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Santa Coloma de Gramenet, Ripollet, Cornellà de Llobregat and Masquefa. The investigation was prompted eight months ago based on unconnected information supplied by members of the public and due to preventive work carried out by the Mossos. “They have not carried out any actions in Catalonia,” explained Josep

Lluís Trapero, the head of the Mossos. “They are youngsters aged between 31 and 39, with prior records, several of which are linked to drug trafficking.” In an interview with regional channel TV3, Trapero added that the suspects under arrest are Moroccans resident in Catalonia. The information gleaned as a result of the investigations carried out by the Mossos was taken to a High Court, which began a probe and then ordered the creation of a joint Spanish-

Belgian team under the European Union judicial coordination program known as EUROJUST. Over recent months, the program saw an intensive exchange of information between the Belgian police and the Mossos. The result was evidence pointing to a direct link between the suspects and jihadist terror groups. The scope of the operation saw the Mossos inform Spain’s intelligence services of their findings, which then led to a further exchange of information.

Also involved and joining forces for the operation were the anti-terrorist branches of the Spanish National Police force, as well as the Belgian Federal Police. While Spain has not suffered an Islamist-inspired terror attack since the Madrid train bombings in 2004, in recent years there have been regular arrests of suspects thought to have been carrying out recruiting activities for jihadist groups.

Fibre-filled foods for health or weight loss something on the savoury side? Mix a half cup of pumpkin with a quarter cup of milk and a cup of pasta for a delish dinner. Kumquats How many you should eat: 5 (5 grams) These itty-bitty fruits look like mini oranges, but can be eaten like a grape–skin and flesh in one bite. Toss 'em in a fruit or vegetable salad for a tart touch.

What if we told you one magic pill could boost your metabolism, increase your lifespan, help you feel full, clear up your complexion, control your cholesterol, and reduce your risk for cancer, diabetes and heart disease? Okay, there's not a pill per say, but there is a single ingredient: fibre. Yet, despite all of the health benefits, research shows that nine out of ten of us fall short of the 25 or more grams we should squeeze in each day. To keep count throughout your day, aim for seven or more grams of fibre at breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus one to two snacks with three or more grams of fibre each. Apples How many you should eat: 1 mediumsized (4 grams) Beyond cleaning out your insides with all of that fibre, apples boost tooth strength and saliva production that helps to keep your pearly whites white. Reach for red varieties for the biggest boost to your health. Pomegranate Seeds How much you should eat: 1/2 cup (4 grams) Rich in more than 100 phytonutrients, pomegranate seeds (also known as arils) are nature's fruit snack. To save stress, buy them already removed from the shell and enjoy them solo (refrigerated or frozen) or sprinkled on top of yogurt, cereal or even in your iced H2O for a nice flavour boost. Rememebr that it is crucial to drink plenty of water as you increase your fibre intake to decrease your risk of bloating. Pureed Avocados How much you should eat: 1/2 cup (8 grams) While not particularly light in calories (184 per half cup, mashed), avocados can be your BFF. The 17 grams of fats, mostly the healthy kind, keep you satisfied and heck, losing weight isn't always about calories anyway. A recent study found that people on a high-fibre diet lost just as much weight as people on a calorie-reduced diet. Spread some on toast for a tasty lunch. Raspberries How much you should eat: 1 cup (8 grams) Experts recommend getting your daily dose from plant foods like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and beans rather than supplements. Drizzle a 60calorie cup of the most fibre-rich berries with a spoonful of melted dark chocolate for dessert. Blackberries How much you should eat: 1 cup (8 grams) They might get stuck in your teeth from time to time, but think of blackberry seeds as mini nuts that quickly boost the fibre content of the fruit. Add a cup to a coffee mug, top with a handful of oatmeal and bake for a speedy crisp you can enjoy as a late-night snack. Guava How much you should eat: 1 cup, diced

(9 grams) Get the fibre you need with just one serving of this tropical fruit tossed in your smoothie, or sliced and poached in juice and served on top of pancakes or French toast. Figs How much you shout eat: 1/2 cup (8 grams) For the ultimate hunger game victor, pair fibre with protein, since both take time to digest - meaning you'll stay full longer. Our favourite use for dried figs is sliced and served on top of a pizza with sliced pancetta and a bit of brie cheese. Barley How much you should eat: 1 cup, cooked (6 grams) Like rice, oatmeal, and quinoa, barley is a grain that puffs up as it cooks meaning a little bit goes a long way toward keeping you full. Research shows it'll help keep your blood sugar on an even keel, too, so consider swapping out your white-bread basket at dinner for a more health-conscious side dish. Refried Beans How much you should eat: 1/2 cup (6 grams) Rich in energy-boosting iron and cancer-preventing polyphenols, refried beans can be a smart option to add to your Mexican menu...if you choose the right kind. Avoid unnecessary pork fat by opting for the vegetarian version, then spread a serving on tostadas or in tacos. Kiwi How many you should eat: 2 mediumsized (4 grams) Besides providing a sizable amount of fibre per serving, a Norwegian study found that downing two kiwi each day for just four weeks can decrease triglycerides (unhealthy fats in blood that have been linked to heart disease) by 15 percent. Beetroot How much you should eat: 1 cup, steamed (4 grams) With their vivid hue, caused by cancerand heart disease-fighting betalains, beets are brimming with health benefits. Slice and serve atop a green salad with goat cheese and candied walnuts. Pumpkin How much you should eat: 1/2 cup (4 grams) Blatner loves blending pumpkin pure into smoothies and oatmeal. Prefer

Artichokes How many you should eat: 1, steamed (10 grams) A proven natural detoxifier, artichokes help keep things moving through your digestive tract. When people are getting plenty of fibre in their diet they don't have issues with bloating and constipation. Go gourmet - or at least make your friends think you have - and stuff your 'choke with quinoa, tomatoes and herbs. Grapefruit How many you should eat: 1 mediumsized (4 grams) Fibre is like a natural detox, only better. It helps you lose weight but you don't have to feel hungry all day long. So go on and snack on this fibre-rich citrus fruit for 4 grams of the satisfying stuff, drizzling it with a bit of honey to balance the slightly bitter bite. Pears How many you shout eat: 1 mediumsized (6 grams) Whatever you do, don't shed the skin—it contains the majority of this fruit's fibre. Zuckerbrot suggests that you "pear" one with a stick of string cheese for a protein boost and you'll walk away with a completely satisfying snack. Lentils How much you should eat: 1/2 cup (l0 grams) Besides being fibre-rich, these bitty beans are an excellent source of folate, which is most well-known for helping prevent birth defects. Fun fact: folate can also slash your risk of stroke, and we love getting in a dose with an immunity boosting Daal recipe. Edamame How much you should eat: 1 cup, shelled (8 grams) Blatner turns to edamame, the popular Asian app, when looking for a salty snack. Stock a bag in your freezer so come mealtime you can toss a handful into soups, salads, or pasta dishes. Roasted Brussel Sprouts How much you should eat: 1 cup, roasted (4 grams) Steam sprouts for the most fibrerelated benefits, as research shows doing so increases the vegetable's ability to bind to bile and send it packing. Scientists discovered that eliminating bile can be linked to a lower risk for heart disease and cancer. Black Beans How much you should eat: 1/2 cup (15 grams) Whole food fibre sources could be considered nature's diet pill. "Fibre has zero calories and it swells in the stomach, so it adds bulk to a meal or snack to make you feel full quicker," says Zuckerbrot. Take your tasty legume "pills" sprinkled into your salad or mashed and served inside grilled tacos. Quinoa How much you should eat: 1 cup, cooked (5 grams) Want to make like this ancient Incan

whole grain and have a long life? Add more fibre to your diet. A 10-year study of nearly 400,000 people funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found a link between eating a fibre-rich diet and greater longevity. Researchers say fibre plays a unique role in reducing the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, infectious and respiratory disease, and certain cancers. Almonds How many you should eat: 23 (4 grams) Go nuts with this snack that boasts gutfriendly bacteria, too. Serve them shaved on top of probiotic yogurt to boost the good bacteria in your stomach and the one-two punch can help you fight off illnesses. Shredded Wheat Cereal How much you should eat: 1 cup (9 grams) Pair this crunchy pick with something sweet and creamy for one

of Zuckerbrot's go-to between-meal bites. High fibre cereal with nonfat Greek yogurt and berries is a great snack you can reach for again and again.

Pistachios How many you should eat: 49 (3 grams) If you're a volume eater or tend to mindlessly eat, pistachios should be your pick. You get more pieces per serving than with any other nut. Plus you have to shell the little blighters, so it slows down your snacking. Flaxseeds How much you should eat: 2 tablespoons (4 grams) Blatner mixes half a spoonful of these versatile seeds with 1 1/2 tablespoons oats and 1 tablespoon peanut butter for a no-bake energy ball snack. Besides packing a fibre punch in a tiny package, flaxseeds are the number one dietary source of lignans, polyphenols that may help prevent breast cancer. Pumpkin Seeds How much you should eat: 1/2 cup (6 grams) A hefty handful packs just as much

protein as it does fibre. Spray with a bit of olive oil, sprinkle on your favourite seasonings, and roast.

Spain and Brazil cable connection Cash grants for those in no Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, on a tour of Latin America, joined Brazil’s Science and Technology Minister Gilberto Kassab at a joint presentation in São Paulo to introduce a new submarine fibre-optic cable that will link Brazil with Spain via Portugal. The cable will be “neutral,” meaning that it is open to any operator, and will offer a capacity of 72 terabytes per second through four fibre pairs and 120

multiplexed channels, representing seven times more information than what is currently relayed by Latin America to the rest of the world. The joint venture, known as EllaLink, is also meant to bypass US surveillance. It will be subject to Brazilian and European privacy protection laws, which are much stricter than those in US legislation. “We will earn capacity, speed and

confidentiality,” noted Rajoy, who stressed the projects “enormous strategic value.” The cable will route calls and internet navigation away from the US, where leaked documents show that the National Security Agency (NSA) spied on former Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff. Spain was also a victim of US espionage, according to documents obtained by former NSA analyst Edward Snowden. Alfonso Gajate, founder and president of the Spain-based submarine cable operator IslaLink, which has partnered with Brazilian telecoms provider Telebras in the EllaLink venture (formerly known as Eulalink), noted that the Iberian peninsula is around 60 kilometers closer to Fortaleza (in northwest Brazil) than it is to Miami, and that it makes no sense to have eight out of nine existing cables that link Europe with South America going through the United States first, as is the case currently. The cable will run along more than 10,000 kilometres and connect to data centres in Madrid, Lisbon and São Paulo, officials said at the presentation. Three intermediate branches are also being planned and these will connect in the island nation of Cape Verde, Spain’s Canary Islands and the Portuguese island of Madeira. The project is supported by a €25 million grant from the European Union. Ultimately, it is hoped that the network will extend throughout South America and connect with the future LSST telescope which is planned in Chile.

signal areas

Residents in Spain's so-called ‘blank zones’ with little or no internet coverage will get up to €450 each to help them connect, says Secretary of State for Information Technology in Society, José María Lassalle. The government's new ‘Satellite Plan’ involves a budget of €10 million, which is hoped to benefit between 20,000 and 30,000 inhabitants, and includes a roll-out of higher-speed broadband connections of up to 30 megabytes. Already, four in five Spanish residents use the internet frequently – a figure that has grown by 6.1 percent in the last year and continues to rise – but the government wants to extend availability to 100 percent of the population. Some of Spain's least-populated and barely-inhabited areas have no coverage for mobile phones or internet, since the low customer base means it is not economically viable for telecommunications companies to fund the infrastructure. This is true of regions such as Aragón which, despite being home to Spain's fifth-largest city – Zaragoza – also has stretches of dozens of kilometres with no civilisation, and an estimated 80 percent of the region's municipalities have fewer

Harold via email asks: Hi Aunty, could you please tell me how to completely remove AVG from my laptop as I'm sick of it popping up every time I start Windows and when I go on the internet. I did the free upgrade to Windows 10 about a year ago and following your brilliant advice I have been using the built in Windows Defender and Malwarebytes and I am happy this is enough security. Aunty Says: Hello Harold. The standard way of removing AVG is through ‘Control Panel’ ‘programs and features’ (either right click on the Start icon or type control panel into the search box) but if you´ve tried this and it still appearing then maybe try AVG’s handy removal tool which you will find by typing AVG REMOVER into Google. Valerie via email asks: Hello Aunty. I recently bought a second hand Acer laptop that is supposedly less than 12 months old but I seriously have my doubts. It keeps randomly freezing at no particular time and sometimes it restarts with

than 30 inhabitants. Other areas with similar issues include parts of Castilla-La Mancha and Castilla y León, two of the mainland’s largest regions which make up practically the whole of the centre of the country. Opposition party Podemos complains Lassalle’s ‘Satellite Plan’ does not go far enough, saying Spain is ‘very backward’ in terms of the so-called ‘digital gap’. According to the National Market and Competition Commission (CNMC), in towns with fewer than 50,000 inhabitants, only a third of residents are able to access internet with speeds of 30MB and in most of these municipalities, fibre optic has not even been installed. But Lassalle insists that a 'major budgetary effort' is being made by the national government for the first time ever, and adds that investment in cyber-safety ‘is not lacking’. In fact, an international online security forum is due to be held in Spain in June. Also, since Spain's government reformed in November last year, it introduced the figurehead of a ‘digital agenda’ minister for the first time in its history.

no warning, and when it restarts it is has a message something like “Ooops the disk needs to scanned and repaired” I have taken it back to the shop where I bought it from in Montesisnos but typically it doesn’t ever go wrong when it’s there. It is not in that bad condition and I have Windows 7 Ultimate. Any suggestions? Aunty Says: Hi Valerie. Its difficult to be 100% sure but this sounds typical of an overheating problem, or possibly a dying hard disk. Before you do anything you should make a backup copy of any personal photos & documents just in case the laptop’s hard drive completely packs up. A quick and easy fix that you can do yourself is to check that all the air vents around the sides and underneath are clear from dust & fluff. I’m a tad curious that a “less than 12 month old” laptop should have Win7 because the newest version of Windows (Win10) has been around for nearly 2 years and its predecessor (Win8) is getting on for 4 years old. Anytime I have seen a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate (or Enterprise) it has been a cracked copy. Can you

send me the make/model Valerie and I will investigate further. Ben from La Zenia asks: Hi Aunty I hope you can help me. I have signed up for my Water bill (Agamed) online but when it arrives in my email inbox, I can read it on the screen but I would like to download (and sometimes print) a copy. It comes attached as a PDF file but when I double click to open or download it, a window appears asking “open with” and “choose the program you want to use to open the file’. I have to scroll through a list and choose Adobe Acrobat Reader and everything seems OK but how can I stop it asking this every time? Aunty Says: Hi Ben. There should be a box you can tick to ‘always use the selected program’ which will stop the message re-appearing. Well that’s it for this week. Email me your questions to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see what I can do.

Costa Cobras RFC fun Las Salinas petanca day has now arrived summer league This coming Saturday, 6th May, the S.F. Costa Cobras RFC fun day will finally be here, starting at 10am – 2pm at the San Fulgencio football ground. There will be different stalls, a bouncy on castle, face painting tombola and a raffle with lots of prizes as well as Mercury FM. Refreshments will be available to purchase. On top of this our vice president and club captain have volunteered to have their legs completely waxed, with the donations going to the Alzheimers charity, so a real worthy cause. For this to be done we are looking at 100€ for the vice president and 200€ for the captain in donations. The fun day is free to enter and the aim is to introduce rugby to the local area, whilst supporting AFA San Fulgencio, everybody is welcome, so come along and join in the fun. Following this the club will be entering its first tournament in

the Alan Davies memorial 7’s on 20 May. We are also gaining more and more players on a weekly basis

with a mixture of experience and novice ones. If you would like to come and join us we train at the football ground in San Fulgencio every

For the love of St. George Touring the Costa Blanca recently were the Cannock Ladies (Lionesses) Rugby Club who, along with their male colleagues, played friendly fixtures against Elche Club Rugby Union over the St George’s Day weekend. The group of over 50 players and staff were based on the Costa Blanca where they also hoped to benefit a local charity. As the trip was partly sponsored by the Leader Newspaper, the editor of which just happens to be the Chairman of the Orihuela Costa and District Branch of the Royal British Legion, it came as no surprise when the party announced that they wished to contribute to the local poppy appeal. They did so in the rather unusual manner of taking a poppy collection box and using it as their ‘swear box’ for the duration of the tour, the proceeds of which amounted to 154 euro, a welcome addition to the Orihuela Costa fund. Here the Lionesses are seen with RBL members Wayne Campbell and Skippy Teasdale who were visiting the Orihuela Costa as part of the Branch’s St George’s Day celebrations.

Monday and Wednesday from 20.30-22.00. Everybody is welcome, from beginners to experienced players, the more the merrier. Why not come along and join the fun with the newest rugby club on the Costa Blanca. For more information about our club, or the fun day, call or Whatsapp Dutch on 692 767 242 or find us on Facebook - S.F. Costa Cobras RFC. Dutch is also at Zoco market on Sundays from 09.00-13.30 selling all of your rugby branded clothing and gear including Canterbury casuals, Cotton Traders, club and international shirts. He also has our club shirt on sale, so get your orders in now! Finally, a big thank you to all of our local sponsors; the Power Pub in San Fulgencio, Legal and Tax in Spain, Autocenter Rojales and Active Surfaces

La Liga set to go down to the wire After Real Sociedad sent Granada down to the second division, beating them 21 in the Anoeta, it was the turn of Real Madrid to play host to Valencia. All seemed to be going well for the home side when Cristiano Ronaldo headed home neatly from Dani Carvajal’s cross, but chances went begging, including a second half Ronaldo penalty, saved, almost inevitably, by Diego Alves. Benzema hit a post too, and things looked grim when Casemiro committed a foul near the edge of the area, and Pareja scored with a superb free kick to the top corner. But Real Madrid again proved that they don’t know when they are beaten, and Marcelo’s precise shot with four minutes to go gave them the points. Despite a goalless first half in the Cornellá, Barcelona woke up in the second half of their game against local rivals Español, and ran out 0-3 victors, to stay ahead on goal difference, though Real Madrid have a game in hand. Atletico Madrid made merry on their visit to the Canaries, winning 0-5 against a poor Las Palmas side, and Villareal continued their good form against a practically-doomed Sporting, winning 3-1. Osasuna’s fate was sealed when they could only draw with Deportivo. Eibar beat Leganés 2-0, to keep Sporting’s meagre hopes alive. Levante have secured promotion, at the first time of asking. With six games still to play, they have amassed sufficient points to be assured of first division football next term. Girona may well be joining them as they are well clear of the

chasing pack. By contrast, local side Elche are struggling, and lost at home to relegation rivals Almería, 2-3 – they are now just a point above the relegation places. In England, Chelsea had an excellent away win at Everton, and stay four points clear of Spurs, who got the better of neighbours Arsenal. Neither Manchester club fared well, City drawing away with relegation candidates Middlesbrough, and United going one worse, drawing at home to another club in the ‘drop-zone,’ Swansea. The Mallorcan Maestro struck again – Rafa Nadal taking his tenth – yes, 10th! – Barcelona Open title, beating Austrian Dominic Thiem (who knocked out Andy Murray earlier) in straight sets. And in badminton, Huelva’s Carolina Marin again won the European title. Malcolm Palmer

36 players made their way to the course to play a pairs combined Stableford competition. However, the expected downpour didn't materialise and some excellent golf was played in what can be described as British conditions. The Captain's Challenge was achieved by adding bonus points on par 3's to the stableford scores. The winner was Garry Garbett who, although losing the gold award on countback, achieved a total of 53 points. Winner of the gold award, on countback, was Alan Craig with 40 points,

Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

So Saturday’s fixtures were a little bit like the Joshua vs Klitchsko undercard. Sure, there were a couple of things of interest, but we’re only really watching because we are waiting for the main event. But, like the promising young boxers hoping they’ll be last in the ring one day, Saturday’s matches tried their very hardest to make Match of the Day almost watchable. OK, they failed miserably, but they tried. There is a beautiful sense of irony that a club nicknamed the “Black Cats” got relegated in their tenth season in the Premier League, therefore proving the saying that a cat does only have nine lives. Admittedly, said cat would have only had three lives if they had been managed by Moyes any earlier, but let’s not ruin the narrative. David Moyes called it his “worst day in football,” putting it further up the list than lasting less than a season at United, less than a season in Spain and less than five minutes in the affections of the Mackem support. I mean, really David? Even Paolo Di Canio managed not to get relegated. You are right though, a manager should be judged over 14 years, not one. How many seasons have you been a manager? 14, you say? Must be a coincidence. Sunderland fans still could give a rat’s bottom how good you were a decade ago. The fact is your side pushed Aston Villa pretty close to

winning the “most laughable attempt at a Premier League football club in recent memory” award this season. And that is saying something. Credit to Joleon Lescott though, he knows how to pick a club. When you are in the middle of a relegation battle, the last thing you want to do is give away a penalty in the last minute when the scores are level. Unless, of course, you know your goalkeeper is going to make a wonderful save and the moment can be referred back to in the weeks to come as “the moment we knew we’d be staying up”. Jakupovic denied Tadic and Hull gathered yet another valuable point. West Ham would have made it two weeks in a row without being mentioned in this column, if it wasn’t for the fact I need to mention them in saying that they nearly didn’t make it into the column again this week. All that is marginally less interesting than the 00 draw they achieved once again. That said, neither they or Stoke had anything interesting to play for so the result must have been expected. Jamie Vardy, as well as Leicester, have come in for a fair bit of stick this season. Yet, Vardy now has 15 league goals and Leicester look well set to finish 8th or 9th having reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Imagine how many slaps David Moyes would give for a season like that? Does anyone still think it was a bad move to get shot of Claudio? Probably.

Burnley began the post-Joey-Barton era with a trip to Palace. I wonder what odds Joey got on a 2-0 away win? Burnley were great, Palace frustratingly inconsistent and a soft touch without big Mama, injured whilst celebrating a goal with big Benteke last week. No, not really but the Frenchman was the reason Palace started defending better and his absence was the reason they looked like they were being coached by Pardew once more. They won’t go down, but it’s still tighter than it should be for them. So we dived into Sunday as if it were the sparkling Indian ocean or, in the case of Marcus Rashford, as if it were Lukas Fabianski. I have likened Rashford to Michael Owen in this column before. Young, quick, a natural finisher and now, it seems with a penchant for taking blatant dives in the area. Of course, in the eyes of Sky and BT, Rashford’s being English and all means that the word “dive” isn’t quite uttered. “Clever” was the most popular substitute. Personally, I preferred Robbie Earle’s analysis of the situation over on CNBC. “Robbie, was that a dive?” Deadpan to camera, “absolutely”. Oh, you don’t need me to tell you that the game, at Old Trafford, ended a draw. A win, especially given the events at the Riverside, would have seen United move into the top four. Jose can subtly moan about Smalling and Jones all he wants, but it’s the lack of killer instinct that is hurting them more than Smalling’s big toe.

The bald derby took place at the Riverside. It’s amazing what confidence beating Sunderland can give you. Middlesbrough led twice, and at one point a rare Calum Chambers goal looked like being more important than anything he has done wearing an Arsenal shirt. But, and feel free to insert your own “Jesus coming off the bench” type gag here, Gabriel Jesus scored a late equaliser. Chelsea left it late against an Everton side who have been pretty useful at Goodison recently. Gary Cahill is becoming the modern day Steve Bruce with his record of scoring important goals. This was, many a wise sage said, the toughest hurdle to jump in Chelsea’s run in. So, I think it is fair to say for about the ninth week in a row, the title is done

Gary Cahill

and dusted. When struggling to break a side down, being able to hit one like Pedro did certainly helps. The Biggest North London Derby Ever!! The Last North London Derby At White Hart Lane Ever!! The Day Spurs Finally Prove to Arsenal Who’s Boss!! According to Harry Kane, Tottenham had more important things on their mind than just beating Arsenal. Well, they certainly didn’t play like it. In a crazy few minutes the game went from being a complete damp squib where Spurs were bound to regret leaving their shooting boots elsewhere, to being yet another dismantling of Wenger’s pride. Harry Kane loves a penalty, and he loves a goal against Arsenal, so it made sense that he scored one. The tackle that Gabriel put in on Kane, moments after Tottenham went ahead sums up Arsenal for me. Mentally weak. Still, don’t forget that it doesn’t matter where Spurs finish this season, it’s the last twenty odd years that count, right Arsene? People might think I am changing my tune, having led with “Spursy” last week, but I think I also said the club that are more Spursy than Spurs right now are Arsenal. And yesterday was living proof. So the top four, well the last two places in the top four, are still impossible to call and I’m not saying which one of Hull and Swansea will be playing Sheffield United next season. I am backing Wenger to find a way of getting another couple of years though, with Daniel Levy paying his wages.

The year is passing so quickly and we celebrated our Open Day at La Serena last Saturday. What is going on with the weather? Bring back the sun! The golf course was as is the custom presented to a very high standard and again we must thank Wayne and his team for their efforts. It was hectic to say the least what with 3 communions and our monthly presentation, it was wall to wall people. Thanks to Bruno, Jean, Jose and Paul for preparing the cards and the results. Our competition committee are doing sterling work thank you Camillus and Philip. Can players please return their cards as soon as possible to the shop on the open days so that they can generate the results. As it happened we had a player asking about his score not winning a prize, it was very

difficult to include him in the results while he had the card in his pocket. Can I remind prize winners that we hold our monthly presentation of all prizes at each of the Open Days for that month’s competitions, if you are not going to attend can you appoint a member to collect your prize on your behalf. Three points keep hope alive

I

t was a pulsating performance from Torry against 10th placed Crevillente on Sunday when the hosts lifted all three points with a hard fought 1-0 win. They deserved the success, but it brought them no closer to safety as rivals Bunol defeated Almoradi 4-0 to maintain their three point advantage. With now only two games left to play, it is time for conviction and composure to reign supreme, with every player giving their all. No one could deny the commitment

in their stride. Former Torry captain Jorge did not feature for the visitors, being suspended for this contest, having been sent off the previous weekend, but his defending colleagues were managing in his absence. At times they were struggling to cope with the exuberance and sheer determination of Lewis Allen, but by and large they were restricting clear cut chances to a minimum. Torry needed a goal, especially as the game progressed, they seemed to have stifled the visitor's

Damian got himself booked. He was warming up close to the corner flag behind the Torry goal when a Crevillente attack petered out. Believing the ball had fully crossed the line, he kicked it back to Jose Carlos. The linesman got the referee over and explained that the ball had not fully went out of play. Damian was rightly cautioned, but sadly the referee showed his ineptness by awarding a free kick to Crevillente instead of restarting play with a drop ball. However, the important thing was the

ABBEY ANGLING

This week’s 7th round of the Spring Series was fished at the Azud de Ajos at Blanca on the 25th April. It is the first match we have fished here for about 2 years; half the match length is now unfishable due to the overgrown Bamboos. This venue has always been known for its hard fishing and today was no exception with only five anglers weighing in with one Carp, one Barbel and three other weights of Bleak 1st Bill Reade with 1.580kgs fishing straight lead using hemp 2nd Mick Hill with 1.1460kgs fishing the method feeder using a wafter 3rd Dave Hoare with 1.440kgs fishing the whip using maggot There are still some vacancies available for membership at the club All details are available on our new website abbeyangling.es or from me on 965328368

It was a tight battle for 2nd and 3rd place with just 60grams difference, there was four weights over 20kgs, so hopefully the fishing here is beginning to improve as the days get warmer 1st Bill Reade with 41.760kgs fishing the pole using bread and maggot 2nd Dave Hoare with 26.960kgs fishing the pole using bread and pellet 3rd Neil McBirnie with 26.900kgs fishing the pole using bread and pellet There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Bill Reade on 966790416 TIGHT LINES Terry Screen

Duran leaves Oscar stranded

and endeavour of key players. Vicente Boix played his best game ever. His pace and tenacity was incredible. Constantly he was available down the right wing, dinking past opponents and delivering tantalising crosses. When not threatening in this manner, he was resolutely defending like a man possessed. Martin surprised fans with his daring high speed bursts past defenders as if they were not

attack. Midway through the second half Torry made the vital breakthrough. They had been playing some intricate play and this time Luis Carlos turned provider, spraying a sweet curling cross into the middle. With calm and confidence, it was collected by Duran who swivelled inside the box and cracked the ball into the net via the underside of the bar. For a split second fans wondered if the goal would

win and those three points that keep hope alive. Torry are three points behind Bunol and five behind Paterna, whom Torry visit on Sunday. An away victory and Paterna would also be one of the sides battling for their survival on the final day of the season - how exciting is that! But that entails Torry winning at a very tough venue. Paterna are dramatically out of form, having only won once in their last eleven games, that win being on 19 February. On the other hand, they have only suffered one home defeat in that same period. Torry know that they must return with all three points. Team: José Carlos, Vicente Boix, Calzado, Javi Meca ©, Jorge, Martín, Beltrán (Damián 82’), Sergio Durán, Borja Mir (Molina 61’), Lewis (Nica 88’) & Luis Carlos. Jeff Scott Vice president CD Torrevieja

We fished the 2nd round of the Spring Series at the El Bosquet Complex on the 19th April. It was a very windy day which made control of the pole very difficult, but the sun shone all day and Bill Reade had an exceptional day with a whopping 41.760kgs just missing out on breaking the record.

Your week in Sport Lewis challenges Oscar

there. Sensing opportunities he tore into the Crevillente defence, his power and pace taking them beyond their clutch. But the key piece of action in the first period was at the other end when Jose Carlos made a vital save when Crevillente forced their path to his goal and had only him to beat. Jose never flinches, nor panics. He is not the biggest goalkeeper, but he is sharp, clever and agile. He stood his ground and waited for his opponent to make his move first. Then he kept his head, but saved with his leg, to keep Torry level at the interval. Torry's first half chances were wide of the mark, but only just. Lewis fired a terrific free kick inches past the post, with Oscar dashing to cover the shot. Beltran cut in from the right and zipped another effort again inches past the upright. Despite the quality of crosses from Luis Carlos and the incredible Vicente Boix, Crevillente coped with these

stand, as it had bounced out of the net, but the eagle-eyed assistant indicated it had crossed the line and players celebrated with as much relief as joy. More chances were created by a rampant Torry who were displaying all their finer qualities as manager Pedreño barked out his orders from the touchline. Molina came on for the listless Borja Mir on the hour mark and made his mark with several fine dribbles and moves. Torry should have extended their lead when he made a grease lightning break from his own half right down to the opposition byeline. Duran had sprinted into the box and all Molina had to do was cut the ball back to him and he would have slotted it home. Instead he hit it high to the far post, half creating a much more difficult chance for Luis Carlos, which he could not manage. Before he came on as a substitute,

Wembley hasn’t seen something hit the deck with such force since Dele Alli played there last week for Spurs, but what a fight it was between Anthony Joshua and Vladimir Klitschko. The heavyweights thumped each other toe-to-toe for eleven pulsating rounds before Joshua launched a flurry that saw the referee call time on one of the finest heavyweight bouts of the millennium. And what a difference it makes not have Tyson Fury involved, there was clear mutual respect between the two fighter from beginning to end. However, the pantomime stage is now being fully erected for Fury’s return to the ring - surely a title match-up with AJ is now on the cards? Lewis Hamilton won’t be very happy finishing fourth. Valtteri Bottas shocked everyone by winning the Russian Grand Prix, managing to stay ahead of Vettel.

With the football World Cup being held in Russia next year, I would hope that any English fans heading over there develop the ability to drive at least as fast as Hamilton, in order to stay safe. Lewis was complaining of his car overheating and had to watch his teammate take the glory. Not the finest weekend in his career, and he is now 13 points off the pace set by Vettel. By the time you read this, you will know whether John Higgins or Mark Selby is the new holder of the Snooker World Championship. Selby overcame Ding Junhui in a semi-final of incredible quality. Higgins has been playing superbly well himself over the fortnight, so those of you that kept the Bank Holiday Monday tradition of watching the final will have no doubt had a treat. In the tennis, Sir Andy Murray still doesn’t appear to fancy using his Knighthood for winning games of tennis, and the return of drug cheat Sharapova was also curtailed before she was allowed to win her tournament and act the

martyr. My favourite story of the weekend was Tom Harrison, dressed as a gorilla, finally completing the London Marathon six days after setting off. I’d genuinely like to see if a real gorilla could actually do it quicker, because it sounds like he wasn’t trying his hardest. Oh, he was crawling it you say? That makes more sense. Plus he raised £26k for the gorillas. Goodness knows how they will spend all that on bananas.
