Orihuela Costa cheated again ■ MIREILLE TODDINGTON mireille@costablancapeople.com

T

he Popular Party/Citizens government has announced a programme of investments to be approved in a plenary meeting of the Orihuela Town Council this week. The investments result from the sale of municipally owned land, almost exclusively in Orihuela Costa, before 2005 and in the period 2012-2014. The total is €6.3 million. The Mayor stated in his announcement that these important investments would respect the agreed distribution of 40 percent for Orihuela Costa, 30 percent each for the city and surrounding villages of Orihuela. This sounds like good news. However, local political party C.L.A.R.O claims that this is not the case. The formula of 40 percent for Orihuela Costa will only apply to the land sold between 2012 and 2014 for a value of €3.7 million. The land sold

before 2005 for a value of €2.6 million will be, in rounded sums, distributed as follows: Orihuela City - €1.36 million which is 52 percent, surrounding villages - € 755,000, 29 percent and Orihuela Costa – € 385,000, just 15 percent. The so-called sacred formula for Orihuela Costa’s share of investments, agreed by all parties in 2012, with strong support from C.L.A.R.O’s councillor at the time, to compensate for the historic discrimination against Orihuela Costa, with the resulting deficiency in infrastructure and services, is being completely ignored. This should not be a surprise to those living in Orihuela Costa. A package of socalled “priority investments” for €1.3 million announced in May, allocated Orihuela Costa with the derisory amount of €57,000, equal to 1.3%. Discrimination is one thing Orihuela Costa is used to. The coast contributes something like 60 percent of the total revenue of the municipality and receives in return less than 10 percent of expenditure.

A C.L.A.R.O spokesperson said: “To pretend that the governing Popular and Citizens parties are respecting the agreed formula of 40 percent of investments for Orihuela Costa is shameful deception. It is equally shameful that municipally owned land in Orihuela Costa was sold to developers for house building when more houses are not needed and will only lead to a greater number of people sharing the existing inadequate services and infrastructure.” As to the investment projects themselves, Orihuela Costa will have nothing to compare to the major project to convert the concrete cover over the high speed rail lines in Orihuela city into a leisure and green area at a cost of over €1.5million. The investment money coming to Orihuela Costa will be spent mainly on upgrading streets and pavements and parks and gardens. A strong argument can be made that this expenditure should not be regarded as investment but should instead come from the normal budget for maintenance. After decades of neglect instead of

proper maintenance, this new money will amount to no more than a drop in the ocean. Walkway Around €500,000 will go towards improving the coastal walkway between Cala Capitan and Cabo Roig. No one can question that this is necessary; part of this coastal walkway was closed for 4 years because of the danger to pedestrians from falling rocks. A considerable sum has just been spent to prevent future rock falls. C.L.A.R.O and other associations on the coast will be watching carefully to see that the €500,000 is additional money and results in real improvements. It is bad news that the principle of a 40 percent share of Orihuela Costa in investments is not being fully respected by the PP/Ciudadanos government. It is even worse that the government parties are claiming that they are doing so while, in fact, they are slicing and dicing the principle and in the process, merrily cheating Orihuela Costa out of its rightful and necessary share of municipal investments.

BITE SIZE Enjoy music in the park NEWS: El Grupo de Refuerzo Operativo (GRO) of the Local Police has increased their efforts to tackle the selling of illegal goodS on Torrevieja sea front. During the tourist season this trade is particularly prevalent. The police are especially on the look out for the sale of illegal substances as well as counterfeit goods. A recent purge on illegal items resulted in 500 articles being retrieved with the most frequently seized being trainers, football items and handbags. The focus of the campaign is the area around Paseo Juan Aparicio but extends as far as La Mata. In addition to the purge on false goods, officers are alert for the presence of pickpockets and other minor offences. They are vigilant for lost children and want to ensure that any arguments or aggressive incidents are quickly dealt with.

10.30pm, a time picked in order that participants can watch the sunset too. Paco Martínez is director of the park and considers that an event of this type is completely compatible with the park’s environment and that it will not disturb the animals. ‘It will be a harmonious and a soft sound. The animals are used to much louder noises,’ he explained during the press conference. ‘We want people to link culture with nature, our goal is that people value the park more highly.’ Agamed water company are patrons of the Symphonic Orchestra and are delighted to be involved with the plans. They are very happy with the proposal as are the members of the orchestra too. The concert is planned during an important year for the park which is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary. ‘It’s a good present for the park,’ said Councillor Serrano, ‘and for nature lovers.’ Suzanne O’Connell

Councillor for the environment in Torrevieja, Fanny Serrano, has organised a classical music concert to take place on the 28th July in the natural park. The orchestra will play in the zone known as La Pinada del Parque Natural and is part of a new initiative to get the town’s people to use its natural, open spaces more and recognise its value. The music will be provided by Torrevieja’s International Symphonic Orchestra and the idea came from seeing the impact of a previous concert performed there; ‘Habaneras en el Parque’. ‘It will be a unique concert,’ explained the councillor, ‘set in the heart of this natural area.’ The music played will include wellknown pieces from the classical repertoire. The audience for the concert will be limited to 100 people and you must collect your invitation from either the Visitors’ reception centre at the park or from Agamed. It will take place at

BITE SIZE Spain has most bars NEWS: Continued from page 3 have asked for some changes to the layout of the streets on the site and where different stalls are located. Councillor Manazanares points out that some of the recent drop in sales could be attributed to the very hot and humid temperatures. Early on, in the market’s initial weeks sales had actually increased.

Black fun festival This is a festival with a difference. Black Fun will take place in Las Eras de la Sal on 28th July. It’s only for the day but will be full of black Music including funk and soul. The event was announced by Councillor Domingo Pérez, the councillor for festivals and will begin at 7pm with free entry. The music will largely date back to the 60s and 70s and will be provided by three groups; Priscila Band, Shirley Davis & the Silverblacks from the UK and Saholin Temple and Defenders de Francia. By special invitation comes David Hooper ‘A real showman who will present the event,’ explained Councillor Pérez. The festival will finish at 1am and although entrance is free, capacity is limited to 2,000.

Torrevieja misses out on Provincial plans Councillor Fanny Serrano has registered her dissatisfaction at what she considers to be Torrevieja’s omission from Alicante Province’s spending decisions. The spending plan announced by the Provincial government includes an allocation of 15 million euros. According to councillor Serrano, it does not include a cent for Torrevieja. The Provincial plan will be approved on Wednesday and, according to the statement by the councillor, does not include Torrevieja. The councillor feels that Torrevieja has not been properly represented during the drawing up of the plan and considers members of the PP party to be to blame.

Man detained for illicit filming The Guardia Civil has detained a man for filming a young girl in the changing rooms of a clothes shop in Habaneras commercial centre in Torrevieja. The man had used a tiny camera to video a girl of 14 years old. The girl was trying on clothes when she noticed a small camera at the top of the changing room wall. She left the changing room immediately and informed the staff of the shop who then contacted the police. The police were quickly on the scene and caught the man in the act as he had continued to use the camera oblivious to his detection. The man detained is believed to be a 45 year old Spaniard from Murcia and has no previous convictions.

Spain holds the European record for being home to the most bars per inhabitant, according to a recent EU study. The southern region of Andalucía alone has as many bars – which include pubs and cafés – as Ireland, Denmark, Finland and Norway combined, a statistic which will cause many to do a double take, given perceptions of the Irish as being hugely fond of their native Guinness. If Andalucía was the only region with any bars at all, at 47,000 in total, it would still have enough for each to cater for 1,000 inhabitants in Spain. But in practice, Andalucía is home to fewer than a fifth of the country's bars – the total number recorded is 279,243 across the whole of Spain, meaning one for every 169 residents. And this is even in spite of the hangover from the financial crisis leading to 70,000 bars and cafés in Spain closing down in the past four years. Although the country's 350,000 bars has dropped to 280,000, their takings still account for 15 percent of the country's GDP. The figure of 169 is only the national average, however – many towns far exceed this. In fact, Mogán, near Las Palmas on the island of Gran Canaria, has 547 pubs and cafés for just over 23,000

residents – meaning one for every 43 people. As a result, if every single person in Mogán went to the pub at the same time, there would almost certainly be enough space for them all to find a seat at once. Anecdotal evidence from other countries hints Spain may be equalled in certain isolated areas – the port town of Harwich, in north Essex, UK, was in the Guinness Book of Records around 15 years ago for having the most pubs per square mile. But pub life in Spain is very different to in the UK: bars generally serve coffee, soft drinks and alcohol at any time of the day, typically from around 7.00am to midnight depending upon location, frequently offer snacks and sometimes ice-cream, the majority have pavement terraces at the entrance, and are used at every hour by everyone from workmen to families with children, for after-work drinks or afternoon tea, lunchtime coffees and latenight half-pints, or cañas. Those referred to as ‘working men’s bars’ still serve cakes and coffee, and tea and coffee shops still serve wine and beer, meaning the distinction seen in northern Europe between a café and a pub is very blurred in Spain.

Two children saved BITE SIZE NEWS: from the sea It could easily have been another fatal case on Wednesday 19th July when two children of 11 and 14 years old found themselves in trouble in the sea. After 20 minutes in the water, the two were exhausted and thought they were going to die. However, they were rescued by two Guardia Civil police officers. Their rescue wasn’t without complications because of the strong current and waves. The waves were preventing the children from getting out of the water because of the risk of them being bashed against the rocks in the Cala de los Trabajos. Jorge, a police officer in the Guardia Civil, went into the sea whilst his companion, Justo, went to get help from the Policía Local. ‘There were anxious moments which lasted an eternity for them,’ explained Jorge.‘They had wanted to get out of the water a lot earlier but because of the rocks and the stormy water they couldn’t. They were at serious risk of being badly injured.’ It was a race against time and the lifeguards advised that the best solution was to get access by a jet ski. The area where the children were swimming was not covered by a lifeguard.

‘I jumped into the water because there wasn’t time to wait for help as the current was strong,’ explained Jorge. This is the second time recently that this officer has been prepared to risk his own life to save another. He was involved in a rescue from the sea a month ago when two people were saved from drowning. Swimming in the unsupervised coves continues to be a dangerous summer pursuit as was seen recently with the sad deaths of a couple in Guardamar. There is no lifeguard service in the smaller coves up the coast and those bathing there take a risk. In this case the two young people were lucky but we are already seeing deaths as a result. There have already been seven drownings in this particularly cove over a period of years. They are particularly popular places for diving amongst young people, but the sea isn’t always as easy to leave as it is to enter. When the local police arrived with a boat they noted that the two young people and their rescuer were all exhausted from the effort by the time they were removed from the water. Suzanne O’Connell

offers a number of services which were not specified when it received its opening licence and the Guardia Civil and town hall are calling for its closure. The building was originally classed only as a motel but stopped operating as such in 2011. Now, alongside offering accommodation for short periods of time, it also acts as a nightclub and hosts erotic shows. Located in Las Barcas urbanisation it can be seen clearly from the main N332. There are concerns that the building is not properly equipped to provide the services it offers and does not have the necessary security. The police are currently inspecting a number of premises to check that they are operating legally. This is a difficult task due to the number of different businesses that there are in Torrevieja. Usually a visit is triggered by someone having complained rather than as part of a systematic inspection.

Cala Ferrís protests On Sunday 23rd July more than 200 people participated in a protest around the perimeter of the Cala Ferrís wall. People are concerned that the area is being impoverished in order to speed up the privatisation process and closed off to use by ordinary people. A newly erected wall prevents access to the palm groves and there are calls for greater investment generally in this part of the town. Protesters claim that the Mar Azul children’s park is being left to deteriorate and the beaches are not properly maintained. Suzanne O’Connell

Battle against domestic violence The Spanish government has agreed 200 measures and an investment of €1 billion towards the battle against domestic violence. Statistically, violent crime in Spain is among the lowest in the world, but the majority of it happens behind closed doors – in fact, so far this year, 31 women have been murdered by their current or former husbands or boyfriends, double the figure for the whole of 2016. And that does not include men or women killed by partners or spouses of the same sex, men murdered by their wives or girlfriends, or violent deaths of parents, siblings or offspring. This said, figures show that the overwhelming majority of domestic violence victims – or at least, those who report their ordeal or whose trauma is discovered when it has cost them their lives – continue to be women, and their perpetrators continue to be men. Opposition parties within the government consider the financial investment, of €200 million per year for the next five years, to be ‘acceptable’ and a ‘substantial improvement’ on the initial proposal of €6 million over

the same period, or €1.2m per annum. Some of the measures due for discussion include restructuring social services and the assistance given to victims who are brave enough to come forward. This means the criteria for all-round help will be relaxed – until now, many victims were denied attention unless they were in possession of a restraining order against their aggressor, which can take months to obtain and the wait can be fatal. A few of the

recent fatal victims had applied for such an injunction and had it denied by a judge. Jurisdiction for handling domestic violence cases will be placed with local authorities, since they are closer to the problem and will be able to design the necessary specialist, urgent and multi-disciplinary approaches. The overall aim is that those who report their ordeal can be taken immediately to a safe haven along with their children if they have

any, and without having to worry about supporting themselves financially in the meantime. Many victims who do not speak out continue to tolerate abuse because they either have no income of their own, or do not earn enough to feed themselves and their children without their aggressor's salary. Steps due to be taken are also likely to cover custody and access, given that women's associations in Spain have alerted of violent men being allowed to see their children unsupervised or even live with them – situations that have, in a few cases, led to wife-beaters harming or killing the youngsters, often to 'get back at' the children's mothers for leaving the relationship. Social services have also been working closely with schools to teach children from a very young age that it is not acceptable to use violence against partners, nor to subject them to excessive control and invasion of privacy – such as constantly checking their emails and text messages and demanding to know where they are at all times – and to stress to youngsters that if they do suffer any behaviour that makes them uncomfortable, they should tell someone straight away.

Prison for Rosie’s killer

A citizen’s arrest

The Alicante Provincial Court has condemned 77 year old Charlie BevillWarcup to 14 years in prison for killing his partner with a walking stick. The murder took place in San Miguel de Salinas in September 2014. The Brit was convicted of murder after a jury declared him guilty on June 11th. He has also been ordered to compensate each of the victim's children with €37,000. Rosemary Broadwell split her time

For once, a thief was caught redhanded. Two off-duty police officers brought down the man who had just assaulted a 70 year-old woman in order to steal her purse. The crime occurred at around 12.45 on the 20th July when the man assaulted the woman in a street in the Colonia San Estaban neighbourhood. The woman fell to the ground as a result of the aggression of the assault as the thief tried to take her handbag. However, the robbery was seen by a number of people who rushed to the woman’s aid and some pursued the thief shouting ‘Thief! Thief!’ at the top of their voices. The thief tried to evade them by running through the neighbourhood’s streets. However, at the junction of calles Moriones and Concorda,an off-duty police officer heard the shouts and blocked the thief’s path. The thief was brought down and surrounded by citizens, could not resist. The officers then alerted colleagues in the Local Police to what had happened.

between her own home in Quesada and Bevill-Warcup’s in San Miguel. After drinking alcohol one evening an argument started between the couple over money and led to shouting and insults. The prosecution said that Rosemary went in to the kitchen, where she fell on the floor and couldn’t get up. It is believed that Bevill-Warcup hit her repeatedly over the head with his walking stick and that Rosie, as she was known,

died as a result of the blows. Two days later, he took her body to a remote spot in Algorfa and hid her with branches. The following day he reported her missing to the Guardia Civil and kept pretending she had disappeared until March 2015, when he confessed. The Prosecution Service had been asking for the man to be given 19 years but in the end he was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Brit suspected of domestic violence stabbing A British man is wanted by the police suspected of stabbing his British partner at their home in Rojales. The Guardia Civil have opened an investigation into the incident and are actively looking for the alleged attacker. The victim is a 67 year old lady and it is believed her partner has a history of violent behaviour. She was stabbed twice during the attack, which took place at the Thader building in Ciudad Quesada and the man fled the scene straight after the attack say police sources. The woman was attended by Rojales local police, Guardia Civil and an ambulance crew before being taken to hospital. It was not known how serious her injuries were, but it is thought she is in a stable condition.

Music festival in Pilar The Luna de Agosto Sumer Music festival is to return to Pilar de la Horadada. The event will take place on Monday 14th August at 10pm and finish at 7am the following day. The DJ line up includes: Beauty Brain, Kevin Edwards, Brain Breakers, Óscar Madrid, Javi Pérez, LaLym Live and DJ Kevin. From 10pm there will be a free bus service from the town centre, Mil Palmeras, Torre de la Horadada and Pinar de Campoverde to the Recinto Ferial Benedicto Raimundo, as well as private security inside the event. The Town Hall's Unit to Prevent Addictive Behaviour (UPCCA) will be present and will hand out different coloured wristbands for over 18 and under 18 year olds so it is clear who is not allowed to drink alcohol.

The arrested man was taken to the Guardia Civil building. He is already known for previous offences and is currently homeless. He often wanders around the bus station and has mental health difficulties. This is the second time this week that the police have had the collaboration of the public in preventing a robbery in Torrevieja. On Monday there had been an attempt to rob the client of a bank in calle Joaquín Chapaprieta. The attempt was foiled by people nearby as the robber tried to take the money from a person withdrawing money at the cashpoint there. Suzanne O’Connell

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE

T

he euro gained back some of what it had given up against sterling during the previous week. A combination of good sentiment from the eurozone – notably in its largest economy, Germany –sent the euro on a good trajectory from the beginning of the week. In the UK, the potent cocktail of rising inflation and stagnant real wage growth shows little sign of abating, and while the UK inflation rate was down 0.3% from May to hit 2.6% in June, many people are seeing their earnings fall in real terms due to the rising cost of living. The big anticipated event was the European Central Bank (ECB) meeting

on the Thursday. During the meeting, Mario Draghi was far from all-out hawkish, warning of inflation pressures in the eurozone. He did hint about an autumn “tapering” of the €60 billion bond buying programme however, which pushed the euro higher. The euro was also helped against the dollar as faith in Donald Trump’s ability to pass through some of his reforms is waning rapidly. People from his own party once again blocked his attempts at repealing Obamacare, and the markets are rapidly losing confidence in his ability to push through tax and infrastructure reforms.

Economic growth will smash IMF prediction Spain’s economy is expected to grow much more than predicted by the IMF this year. The world banking institution had forecast growth of 2.6 percent, but it recently revised this to ‘at least’ 3.1 percent. Strong consumption, investment and exports have helped to keep Spain’s fouryear economic recovery on track. The country’s gross domestic product also likely surpassed its pre-crisis level in the second quarter of this year, according to

the IMF. But the body added that Spain’s economy could end up growing more than 3.1 percent in 2017, if momentum from past reforms accelerates more than expected. Spain restructured its banking sector and made tweaks to its labor laws several years ago to try to boost growth after the country plunged into recession when a building boom went bust. The IMF has called on Spanish authorities to take advantage of robust economic

growth to focus on chipping away at the public debt, which remains high at around 100 percent of GDP. It added that the country also needs to address youth and long-term unemployment rates, which are among the highest in Europe. Thousands of new jobs are being created as the economy heals, but many are just temporary positions and many Spaniards who say they want to work full-time are in parttime positions.

Pension pot too small to transfer? Think again! I

recently met with a client who had never considered a pension transfer because he had a company pension scheme and was only with his employer for 3 years. He guessed that his pension fund would be worth around 3k to 5k and not worth transferring. After contacting his company and applying for a pension transfer quotation we found out that the value of his pension fund was actually 37,000 pounds. He decided to transfer his pension and take a lump sum. Another client thought his pension was a moderate 25,000 pounds and after investigation it turned out to be worth over 90,000 pounds. I am staggered at how valuable these seemingly small pension pots are. Time and time again I see so called "small pension pots" turn out to be large pension funds. As interest rates are at an all‐ time low, transfer values are at their highest. If you have a pension fund and you have dismissed the idea of a pension transfer because you consider your fund will be too small, then please think again. Unlike some financial advisers, we do not have a minimum threshold. You may also have a lost pension that you have not pursued because you thought the pension will be "too little to bother with". I urge you to dig out any information that you have on these valuable pensions and come and see us. You may be surprised at how much they are worth. Here at Seagate we are in a unique position and can offer UK Regulated Pensions along‐side Internationally based plans, giving our clients the peace of mind that their pension is being regulated under the watchful eye of the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). We will be happy to give you advice on what cash lump sum and income that you would receive if you transferred your pension. The ‘sensitive plant’, Mimosa pudica, also known as ‘humble plant’, or ‘touch-me-not’, is a fun plant to grow - a source of fascination to adults and children alike. When you gently touch the narrow fern-like leaflets they almost instantaneously fold together and the leaf stalk droops. This sometimes sets off a chain reaction, causing the collapse of a whole section of foliage, or perhaps the whole plant. When left to its own devices, the plant will gradually return to normal.

This touch-induced movement of leaves is thought to be a defensive mechanism against predators. The shrinking and closing of the leaves is thought to startle potential herbivores and dislodge harmful insects, thereby ensuring its survival. Robert Hooke (English scientist famous for his microscopy work, 1635-1703) was one of the first people to investigate the movements of Mimosa pudica, and at that time it had been suggested that plants had nerves and tissues similar to those in animals. It was later discovered that the leaves fold as a result of the internal movement of water, and the mechanics of the process are now welldocumented. A stimulus, such as touch or air movement, triggers certain areas of the stem to release chemicals, which cause water to move out of cell vacuoles and leads to cell collapse. The closing motion of the leaves is quite dramatic and you almost feel as if the plant is alive. It is this curious characteristic, even more than the plant’s attractive flowers, that gardeners find appealing. The leaves also close under various other stimuli, such as warming, cooling, blowing, or shaking. And at night, the

leaves will fold and bend as a reaction to absence of light. All in all a very “lively” plant.

Appearance The sensitive plant is found as a weed throughout the tropics, but is widely cultivated elsewhere for its curiosity value. It is a lowgrowing, creeping plant or small shrub with sparsely to densely prickly, branching stems. In cultivation this tropical perennial is often grown as an annual. In gardens it can form a groundcover that helps shade out weeds but it may die in the winter. In temperate climates, the sensitive plant enjoys widespread popularity as a houseplant due to its fascinating behaviour. The leaves are bipinnate, fern-like and pale green. The plant usually flowers from midspring to early autumn, with clusters of five to eight pink or lavender fluffy, ball-shaped flowers on short stalks. Each flower consists of hundreds of fine filaments, thus giving it the appearance of a fluffy pompon or a fireworks burst. Seeds are produced in pods which split into single-seeded segments bearing bristles, which aid dispersal by animals. In tropical countries the plant

flowers all year and each plant may produce up to 700 seeds.

Culture: Soil and Climate Mimosa pudica is a heat-loving plant that does best in hot, moist climates. Ideally, it should be planted in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, but can survive drought conditions and poor soil. Despite the plant’s adaptability to a range of conditions, Mimosa pudica is sensitive to frost.

Propagation Mimosa pudica can be propagated by seeds or summer cuttings. The seeds germinate easily especially if they are scarified (scratched) and soaked overnight in warm water. When transplanting the seedlings, take care not to disturb the sensitive roots.

Invasiveness While the plants do not live long - generally a single growing season - the seeds they drop take root easily. Mimosa pudica can become invasive if not kept under control and are considered weeds in agricultural settings such as forest plantations, farms, orchards and pastureland. Nonetheless, one can’t deny the fact that Mimosa pudica or the “touch-me-not” plant is a compelling and fascinating plant. It is a plant unlike the usual plants one comes across. Marc Vijverberg

Córdoba sets new temperature record high The heatwave recently seen across central, southern and eastern Spain produced a new record on Thursday 13th July, when an official weather station at Córdoba airport logged a temperature of 46.9ºC at 3.30pm. This is the highest figure recorded at this spot since the station was built, making Córdoba the Spanish capital with the highest temperature in Spain. Another municipality in Córdoba province, Montoro, registered a high of 47.3ºC, making it the hottest village in Spain and the new hot weather record-holder since Spain started to keep track of weather events. The AEMET state weather agency said that temperatures eased up slightly over the weekend, but did not expect the heatwave to officially end before August. The weather agency is forecasting a drop of between 1ºC and 3ºC in the south, but the provinces of Jaén and Córdoba are on a “red” heat advisory for the third day in a row, with temperatures that will reach over 44ºC. AEMET has also issued an

“orange” warning in 13 other provinces, meaning conditions are slightly less hazardous to human health, for temperatures of 38ºC and over.

AEMET said that northern Spain would nw start feeling the heat. “For now, the temperature rise in the north will not reach heatwave levels, but could eventually,” said agency spokeswoman Delia Gutiérrez. The relentless heat will ease up notably in the south, but eight provinces will remain on orange heat warnings. That number will go down to five on Sunday.

Córdoba is set to hold the heat record once again with an expected high of 45.7ºC, followed by 46.4ºC in Andújar (Jaén), 44.2ºC in Écija (Seville) and 44.7ºC in Linares (Jaén). These temperatures are 7ºC to 11ºC hotter than average for this time of the year at these locations. Meanwhile, the provinces of Granada, Huelva, Seville, Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara, Toledo, Ávila, Salamanca, Madrid, Badajoz and Cáceres are on an orange heat advisory, while Cádiz, Málaga, Huesca, Teruel, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lleida, Valencia and Segovia are on the lowest heat alert, yellow.

According to a study from AEMET, which covers all of the heatwaves in the country between 1976 and June 2017, temperatures above 46ºC have rarely been seen in Spain. Temperatures exceeding 45ºC have been registered on five occasions, including at Córdoba airport in the summer of 2015, and in 2012 when 45.9ºC was reached at Seville airport. However, the maximum temperature ever recorded in Spain was not actually during a heatwave: on July 23, 1995 the heat at Córdoba airport hit 46.6ºC. The longest heatwave on record took place in 2015 and lasted 26 days.

CHANIA is the second largest city of Crete and the capital of the Chania regional unit. It lies along the north coast of the island, about 70 km (43 mi) west of Rethymno and 145 km (90 mi) west of Heraklion. The official population of the municipal unit is 53,910, while the municipality has 108,642 inhabitants (2011). This consists of the city of Chania and several other towns and villages, including Kounoupidiana (pop. 8,620), Mournies (pop. 7,614), Souda , Nerokouros, Daratsos, Perivolia, Galatas and Aroni. History Early history Chania is the site of the Minoan settlement the Greeks called Kydonia, the source of the word quince. Some notable archaeological evidence for the existence of this Minoan city below some parts of today's Chania was found by excavations in the district of Kasteli in the Old Town. This area appears to have been inhabited since the Neolithic era. The city reemerged after the end of the Minoan period as an important city-state in Classical Greece, one whose domain extended from Chania Bay to the feet of the White Mountains. The first major wave of settlers from mainland Greece was by the Dorian Greeks who came around 1100 BC Byzantine and Arab era The early Christian period under Byzantine rule and the rule of the Arabs, who called the settlement Al Hanim , are not well documented. Under the Arabs, the Christian population was persecuted and moved to the mountains. The Byzantine Empire retook the city in 961 AD . In this period the Arabic name of the city was changed into Greek Chania. Byzantines began to strongly fortify the city in order to prevent another Arab invasion, using materials from the ancient buildings of the area. Venetian era After the Fourth Crusade (1204) and the fall of Byzantium in the Hellenic area, Crete was given to Bonifacio, Marquess of Montferrat. He in turn chose to sell it to the Venetians for 100 silver marks. In 1252 the Venetians managed to subdue the Cretans but in 1263, their rivals of Genoa, with local support, seized the city under the leadership of Enrico Pescatore, count of Malta, and held it until 1285, when the Venetians returned. Chania was chosen as the seat of the Rector (Administrator General) of the region and flourished as a significant commercial centre of a fertile agricultural region. The Venetian rule was initially strict and oppressive but slowly the relations between the two parts improved. Contact with Venice led to close intertwining of Cretan and Venetian cultures, without, however, the Cretans losing

their Greek Orthodox nature. The city's name became La Canea and its fortifications were strengthened, giving Chania the form that it still has today. Ottoman era However, the walls did not prevent the Ottoman army from overrunning the city in 1645 after just two months' siege. The Ottomans landed near the Monastery of Gonia in Kissamos, which they plundered and burnt. They seized Chania itself on 2 August 1645. Huge numbers died in the siege. In 1821, as Greeks rose against the Ottoman Empire, there were conflicts between Greeks and Muslims in Chania, leading to casualties from both sides, most of whom were Muslims Modern era In 1898, during the final moves towards independence and enosis—union with Greece—the Great Powers made Chania the capital of the semi-autonomous Cretan State , with Prince George of Greece, the High Commissioner of Crete living here. During these years Crete issued its own stamps and money. This was a very important transitional period when, no longer an isolated vilayet of the Ottoman Empire, the city became more cosmopolitan and flourishing, regaining its role as the crossroad of civilizations, influenced by Europe as well as by the East. Many important buildings were built during this era, intellectual and artistic societies were created and a new class of local aristocracy brought a different atmosphere to the everyday life of the town. The district of Halepa has many fine neoclassical embassies and consulates dating from this period.

Economy Two main sources of wealth in Chania are agriculture and tourism. A big portion of the city's residents own from few to many decares of agricultural land where several plants are being cultivated, the most popular ones being olive trees and citrus. Other important products include wine, avocados, dairy etc. Apart from the traditional ways of cultivation, some of the producers have concentrated on practicing new methods in order to promote organic food. On the other hand, tourism has developed rapidly during the last decades, starting from the early 1970s. Nowadays the tertiary sector is becoming more and more important for the locals, since an increasing number of them are participating in the business

Cityscape The city of Chania can be divided into two parts: the old town and the modern city which is the larger one. The old town is situated next to the old harbour and is the matrix around which the whole urban area was developed. It used to be surrounded by the old Venetian fortifications that started to be built in 1538; of them the eastern and western parts have survived. From the south, the old town is continuous with the new, and from the north the physical border is the sea. The centre of the modern city is the area extending next to the old town and especially towards the south.

Climate The city has a typical Mediterranean climate, with sunny dry summers and mild rainy winters. During the period between April and October, clear-sky weather is almost an everyday feature. The atmosphere is always warm, but fierce heat blow from northern directions and pleasantly moderate the conditions. Intervals of sunny days are frequent during the windy and rainy winter as well.

Former Caja Madrid bank chief in Police arrest 12 over possible suicide Orihuela Costa murder The former chairman of failed savings bank Caja Madrid, Miguel Blesa, was found dead at a country estate in southern Spain’s Córdoba province. Police sources said that Senor Blesa had arrived at the property, named Puerto del Toro, a few days earlier with the intention of spending several days there. Before going out hunting he was having breakfast with friends, whom he told he was going out to move his car. Initial reports indicate he was found dead with a bullet wound to his chest from a hunting rifle, and suicide is suspected although this has not been confirmed. Miguel Blesa was one of 65 defendants found guilty in March of misusing millions of euros from the lender Caja Madrid through the use of tax-free credit cards in the socalled “tarjetas black” scandal. Those involved in the case spent a collective €12.5 million between 2003 and 2012 on tax-free

personal expenses ranging from vacations and jewellery, to meals in expensive restaurants, all paid for with credit cards unofficially granted to them by the heads of the Caja Madrid savings bank, then later at Bankia - the entity that was created from the merger of seven struggling regional lenders. The top convictions in the case were for Miguel Blesa, who was sentenced to six years in prison, and for his successor Rodrigo Rato, a former International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief who was also deputy Prime Minister of Spain between 2003 and 2004. The latter was handed a four-and-a-half-year sentence. Both men had appealed. Anti-corruption prosecutors had initially called for Blesa and Rato to pay a civil bond to avoid jail. In the case of Senor Blesa that figure was between €75,000 and €100,000. However, Spain’s

High Court chose not to impose the bond until the appeal was resolved. Yet Miguel Blesa had already seen the inside of a jail – if only for 15 days – in June 2013, when a judge sent him to Soto del Real penitentiary in Madrid over his role in the acquisition of Florida’s City National Bank by Caja Madrid on 7th November, 2008. Senor Blesa, who approved the purchase for over $1.12 billion, was charged with overpaying by more than 50 percent and bypassing regional laws that required permission from the Madrid government for transactions worth more than 5 percent of the lender’s capital. The Bank of Spain had also expressed misgivings about the Florida bank’s solvency. Failed savings bank Caja Madrid was once Spain’s fourth-largest lender, with more than seven million customers and annual earnings of over €2 billion during the real estate boom. But over a space of 20 years or so, the flagship savings bank became a refuge for dozens of politicians who were granted a seat on its board as a reward for their loyalty or internal power.

The murder took place in Dehesa de Campoamor in January 2016 when a four-man hooded gang burst into the bedroom of a 49year-old Italian man who was asleep with his girlfriend. The Romanian woman appeared terrified and nervous having witnessed such a vicious attack and told the police what she had seen. According to the witness, she was asleep, when four hooded men entered her bedroom and after immobilising the man, dragged her into another room, while speaking in Italian or Romanian. The gang then started to hit the man with extreme force, demanding money and drugs supposedly in his possession, until finally the man died from his injuries. The Guardia Civil detectives carried out a detailed search and noted there was no forced entry, and the stolen items had nothing to do with the severity of the crime. Their suspicions were aroused and an investigation was started into the woman’s

background and possible involvement. The man had a fractured jaw from the punching he received and the bedroom was splattered with blood, indicating the violence which had been used. However, the autopsy showed that the man died not from the beating but from suffocation. The gang used a piece of knotted sheet pushed hard against the larynx until death. Arrests have now been made in Germany, France and Romania. Eight men and four women of Kosovan, Romanian, Bulgarian and Spanish nationalities aged between 23 and 40 years old were arrested for the presumed involvement – in varying levels - with the murder, robbery with violence and intimidation committed inside the home of the victim. It has now been established that the victim was linked to the darker night scene in Torrevieja and had links to drug traffickers and prostitutes as does the woman.

Rubber dinghy sales curbed to stop migrants The European Union has taken steps to limit the export of inflatable boats to Libya in a bid to make it harder for smugglers to send migrants to Europe in them. The decision by the foreign ministers of the 28 EU states, which also covers outboard motors, is the latest bid to help a chaotic and violence-torn Libya stem the flow of migrants to Italy, now the main route to the European bloc. “We took a decision to introduce restrictions from today onwards on the export and supply to Libya of the inflatable boats and motors,” EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said. “These are devices are used by traffickers for smuggling activities. This decision we have taken on the European Union level will help make their businesses and lives even more complicated,” the former Italian foreign minister told reporters. An EU statement said there will now be a legal basis to block the supply of dinghies and outboard motors to Libya if there are ‘reasonable grounds’ to suspect that they will be used by people smugglers and human traffickers. The restrictions will also apply to such goods if they are transiting through the EU to Libya - a move which would in theory affect China where many of these

goods are manufactured. Fishermen and others who have legitimate reasons to use the dinghies and motors will still be able to import them, the council said. In practice, EU countries could deny licenses to importexport businesses suspected of supplying smugglers, according to EU sources. Meanwhile, the foreign ministers extended an EU mission to help Libya reestablish effective controls mainly at its southern borders where subSaharan African migrants first arrive. The mission was extended until the end of 2018. Libya is struggling to control its long land borders with Sudan, Chad and Niger. In another bid to stop smuggling, the EU has also trained 113 Libyan coast guard members in the last few months and plans to train another 75 starting in September, Mogherini told reporters. The EU is facing growing pressure from Italy to stop the flow of migrants to its shores, including demands to make member states admit tens of thousands migrants under a largely unenforced emergency plan launched nearly two years ago. The Italian authorities have already registered 85,000 arrivals on its coasts in the first six months of the year.

Fake products cost 800,000 jobs annually across EU The production of counterfeit goods is on the rise, with OECD figures showing up to 85 billion euros of imported goods to the EU are fake. While it is still considered an external phenomenon, the production of counterfeit goods is also increasing in EU Member States. Criminal networks, already experienced in fraud, document forgery, tax evasion or human trafficking, see counterfeiting as a profitable business, with lower risks and the advantage of lower transport costs and circumventing customs controls. Though data in spheres of illegal activity is heavily based on estimates and approximations, the figures are in any case alarming: estimates of the value of trade in counterfeit products worldwide vary between 600 billion euors (UN) and close to 1 trillion euros (other international statistics). For the European Union, the OECD estimates that up to 5 percent or 85 billion euros of imported goods are counterfeit or pirated, causing the loss of roughly 800,000 jobs and around 14.3 billion in annual tax revues, including VAT and excise duties. Given that around 39 percent of the EU’s GDP and 26 percent of its employment come from intellectual property right (IPR) intensive industries, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) believes the EU and its Member States should no longer ignore this phenomenon, and calls on them to support affected SMEs and industries by updating, harmonising and strengthening the current regulatory framework.

“If we do not act now, we risk multilateral problems such as failure in research, innovation and investment, damage to image and quality, risks to health, safety and the environment, loss of fiscal and parafiscal revenues, and failure to tackle organised crime”, said Antonello Pezzini, highlighting some of the consequences of inaction. Mr Pezzini

The 3,000 free zones located in 135 different countries – with the Tanger Med free zone in Morocco only 15 km away from the EU need special attention, as these are the areas which are often used as places for exchanging, documenting and relabelling the contents of containers. In its opinion, the EESC calls for a new EU framework for 20182021 including a fully financed and coordinated Action Plan to strengthen anti-counterfeiting legislation and initiatives at EU level. Raising awareness is also key. Rajoy pledges €5bn investment in major roads President Mariano Rajoy has announced investments of €5 billion over the next four years into at least 20 of Spain's major trunk roads covering around 2,000 kilometres. The cash injection will involve modernising and repairing heavilyfrequented highways and motorways to improve safety and adapt to the

ever-increasing volumes of traffic, given that the last 20 or 25 years have seen a sharp rise in vehicles on the roads – many of which have not undergone any significant works in this time. Rajoy says franchise firms will be responsible for maintenance of these 20 or so roads for the next 30 years in

a formula he describes as part-private and part-public investment – a scheme he says ‘works very successfully’ in several European countries and has seen a rise in roadbuilding and improvements from 5 percent to 90 percent in the past decade. This formula will reportedly create

189,200 new jobs which, over the next four years, will bring in €3bn in tax income, effectively refunding the State 60 percent of its initial investment. He is not clear whether this will involve more toll roads, although plans are afoot for a State buy-back of several loss-making toll motorways

over the next few years, mostly those in the Madrid area. Additionally, the AP-7 motorway stretch managed by Aumar, S.A. running from San Juan (Alicante province) to Algemesí (Valencia province), a distance of around 200 kilometres – will become toll-free from New Year's Day in the year 2020.

Possible prison for fake Three Brits arrested for posting drugs claim family A British family could be imprisoned for a fake monetary claim during their holidays in Mallorca. The family has been accused of lying about having suffered an illness during holidays in Mallorca, demanding a compensation of 53,720.30 euros from Thomas Cook, and faces possible imprisonment according to reports in the British press This is yet another case of fake complaining about illnesses when on holiday in Spain and now the British judiciary has taken action favouring Thomas Cook after false claim against a hotel on the Canaries, but this is the first time that someone has placed a claim before a penal court in the UK. The false complainants face a prison sentence ranging from 18 months to six years if they are found guilty of the crime of fraud. The couple, Deborah Briton and Paul Roberts, had presented several false claims for themselves and their two children, who alleged suffered food poisoning during their holidays in Mallorca. In addition, one of the daughters of the family, 30 year

old Charlene Briton is claimed to have presented another illegal complaint for herself and her daughter during their holiday in Mallorca in 2016. The three accused attended the preliminary hearing before the Liverpool Judicial Court where they pleaded innocence to six counts of fraud. District judge Andrew Shaw told the accused that their case would now be heard by the Superior Penal Court with the accusations representing ‘a sophisticated fraud claiming an astounding large amount of money’ They will remain in custody until 10th August when an appeal for bail will be heard.

Officers from the National Police have detained three British men in Málaga for their presumed responsibility for the crime of drug trafficking. The men were caught red-handed when sending a large package of marijuana, which weighed 3 kilos, in the postal service to London. The judge has ordered provisional prison for all of them. The drugs were found inside some home-made but fairly sophisticated containers, and the instincts of the two plain-clothed policemen were pivotal in discovering the drugs. The officers spotted a car containing three men, aged 24, 49 and 52 years of age. Two men got out of the vehicle and took a cardboard box from the boot sealed with gaffer tape. They were nervously looking around and glancing and between each other and the watching policemen became increasingly suspicious. The driver remained in the car, while the other two entered the post office based in the Alameda industrial estate. Approaching, the officers detected a slight odour of marijuana escaping

from the parked car and called in the canine unit who then confirmed the presence of the drug. Inside the package, the police discovered six blue plastic cylinders - each one containing some 500 grams of marijuana buds - totalling three kilos and prepared to be sent to London. In searching the homes of two of the suspects now in custody, the officers found diverse items related to drug trafficking, several home-made gadgets and more hidden drugs - five grams of cocaine, a taser gun, and a note counting machine.

PROPERTY BLOG

When is it time to reduce your price? Rebecca Serwotka

Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! If you’ve had your home on the market for quite some time, and still you’re waiting for that elusive offer, you need to seriously think objectively about why you believe you’re still not sold. Some people price their homes based on pure emotion, and find it very hard to break free from the potential monetary loss. Comparing what they paid for the property originally, together with the tidy sum invested in renovating can make their price inflated, compared to the current market value. As a seller, you need to focus on the importance of the here and now and not on what has happened in the past. This is not a time to dwell on would‘a, could‘a, should‘a! So sometimes you need to bite the bullet, cut your losses, and weigh up the reasons why you’re on the market in the first place. If you really need or want to move, you MUST price your home accordingly. Buyers aren’t stupid! They will know exactly what they can get for their money, and just because you may have the most beautiful home in the street, doesn’t mean you can ask over current market value. You’ve probably experienced quite a few potential buyers being brought to your home, but ask yourself, how many offers

have you even had? If your answer is none, then this is a red flag of truth, waving its ugly head in front of you. The only way you’re going to get rid of that flag, is to sort your price out PRONTO! I’m always talking about prices in my blog, but everything comes down to money. If you’ve not spoken with a professional Real Estate Agent about fixing your perfect price, then go and have a chat with them. If they’re allowing you to put on your own price asking price, based on your feelings, and not the current market value, then they’re not doing you any favours. Who wants to keep being on call for any potential viewing appointments, then when the buyers do come around, they tell you what a wonderful home you have… leave, and never seen again. It’s not that they didn’t like your house, they probably did, but they’re running away faster than being chased by the bulls through the streets in Pamplona, because you scared them away… with your price! If you’re not up to pricing your property correctly, then maybe you shouldn’t be on the market. If you make the mistake of pricing the property based on what you want to buy, you need to remember, in the property market, there are losses, but there are gains too! Think logically, and if you feel now is the time to lower your price, think about the offer you’ll be putting in on your next purchase. Sometimes you won’t make as big a loss as you think, because you’ll gain it right back with your purchase! The property market is always about logic. Think about it logically as a seller, and put yourself in a buyer’s shoes… Would you pay too much? Think property? Think us, because life’s complicated enough! Always on their phone

Worried about our neighbour

My teenagers are driving me crazy with their constant use of smart phones and tablets. There is never a time when they don’t have them in their hand. Mealtimes are a nightmare - we can’t sit down as a family without the continual beeping of messages, and obsession with updating their Facebook pages. I grew up without these things, and despair at the youngsters today. When I tell them to put them away they just roll their eyes at me, and don’t take me seriously.

Our neighbour's husband died recently, and she has since withdrawn from the community. Before she lost her husband she used to stop for a chat, and she and her husband would come along to gatherings together. Since the funeral she has pretty much stayed indoors. She doesn't go out shopping anymore, but has her groceries delivered. I knocked on her door to see if she needed anything the other day. She said she didn't, thanked me and closed the door. Is there anything I can do? I have her son's telephone number and wonder whether I should call him.

I agree, the use of smart phones etc has got out of hand, and we are all becoming very anti-social as a result. The key here is to make some rules and stick to them. For example, no phones at mealtimes. No going on the Internet after say 7.30pm (after homework has been done), and switch off the wifi completely. If they don’t think you are serious, take away their pocket money. You must stand firm and keep to your word.

It's not unsual for people to withdraw after a bereavement. If she is getting her groceries delivered, that means she is eating ok. You could put a nice card in her letterbox letting her know you are all thinking about her, and offering help and company if ever she needs it. If I were you I would call her son and tell him of your concerns, but leave it at that. It takes time to deal with the loss of a spouse, and some people need time and space to adjust and deal with things in their own way.

More so than ever, communication plays a significant role in our day to day living and hearing and understanding are central to this. It is quite common that people with hearing difficulties to have an above average chance of suffering from depression. Whilst our hearing can get worse with age, several other age groups wear hearing aids due to the benefits they provide. It has been proven that healthy hearing is directly connected to our overall health and wellbeing.

British tourist in Benicàssim beach rape claim A young British woman has claimed she was raped on the beach at Benicassim during the recent music festival. The victim underwent tests at the General Hospital after being found in the early hours by the Guardia Civil - the alleged attack took place in the early hours of Saturday during the massive FIB musical festival. The 21 year old was sexually assaulted on the Torreón beach in

Benicàssim according to a statement from the Guardia Civil. She was found in poor state, and was immediately taken to the General Hospital where she underwent surgery. The attack was said to have taken place between 12.30am and 1.00am when thousands of visitors, many British, enjoyed the largest FIB seen in recent years. Sources said that during her statement she was unable to

remember much about her attacker, and had been contradictory at times. This complicates the work of the detectives from the Guardia Civil who are determined to find the culprit. Given the avalanche of party-goers the rape occurred amidst the highest levels of security seen in the history of the festival. Although the beach isn’t part of the festival area, the number of agents on duty was 30 percent more

than last year to guarantee the safety of more than 50,000 tourists who were attending the festival every day, both outside the concert area and its surroundings. During the four days no incidents occurred inside the area, but large screens project the concerts to a wider public and one unsavoury episode happened when Red Hot Chilli Peppers ended and the large screens

45

showed live shots of the public. Several girls decided to show their breasts and those who refused were booed by some of those attending. Director of the FIB, Melvin Benn, assured in a press conference he was unaware of the incident and would have taken immediate action. Mayor of Benicàssim, Susana Marqués, assured people that her town was at the forefront of sexual equality and the eradication of violence against women and the incident was being taken very seriously.

Brexit talks underway despite UK infighting Britain and the EU vowed to get to the 'heart of the matter' as they launched fresh Brexit negotiations in Brussels, even as bitter infighting gripped the British government. Brexit minister David Davis met EU negotiator Michel Barnier for a second round of talks on Monday ahead of Britain's historic withdrawal from the bloc, scheduled for March 2019. But in London there was fresh turmoil as weakened Prime Minister Theresa May prepared to urge her warring ministers to end damaging leaks against each other over Brexit. “Now it's time to get down to work and make this a successful negotiation,” Davis told reporters as Barnier welcomed him to the headquarters of the European Commission. During four days of talks the two sides hope to make progress on key issues surrounding Britain's withdrawal, including citizens’ rights and its exit bill, so that negotiations can move on to discuss a future trade deal later this year. “For us it's incredibly important we now make good progress, that we negotiate through this and identify the differences so we can deal with them and identify the

similarities so that we can reinforce them,” added Davis. Barnier, who has repeatedly called on Britain to set out a full divorce strategy, said they needed to “examine and compare our respective positions in order to make good progress.” “We'll now delve into the heart of

the matter,” Barnier, a former French foreign minister and European Commissioner, told reporters. Davis however stayed only a few hours before returning to Britain for parliamentary business, officials said. He will come back to Brussels on Thursday for more talks with Barnier and a news conference. Photographs of the brief meeting showed grim-faced EU negotiators with large sheaves of paper across a table from a grinning, empty handed British team. The talks are the first full round of negotiations that formally began last month with a one-day session to agree on a timetable. The EU has demonstrated increasing confidence in recent weeks, accusing Britain of dithering over whether it wants a ‘hard’ or ‘soft’ Brexit more than a year after the shock referendum that propelled May to power. But May's minority government remains fragile one month after the snap 8th June election in which her Conservative Party lost its majority, leaving the EU wondering whether she can actually formulate a coherent Brexit policy. British newspapers have been full of reports of a civil war within her cabinet, with finance minister Philip Hammond in particular

being targeted over allegations he was trying to derail Brexit. May herself is calling them to

order, her spokesman said. “Cabinet must be able to hold discussions of government policy in private and the Prime Minister has reminded her colleagues of that at the recent Cabinet meeting,” the spokesman said. Hammond himself acknowledged that ministers were divided on other elements of Brexit. “I think on many fronts it would be helpful if my colleagues - all of us - focused on the job in hand. This government is facing a ticking clock over the Brexit negotiations,” Hammond said. With the government paralysed, London has opted for a spot of royal soft power, sending Prince William and his

wife Kate on a ‘Brexit diplomacy tour’ of Poland and Germany. The couple arrived with their children George and Charlotte in Warsaw for a five-day tour. Brussels insists it will only start discussing the future relationship once there has been ‘sufficient progress’ on the divorce - an estimated 100-billion-euro exit bill, the rights of three million EU citizens living in the UK, and the border in Northern Ireland. Concerns This week’s talks are also set to address more detailed concerns such as Britain's future in Euratom, the EU’s nuclear safety agency, and the role of the European Court of Justice, the EU’s top court. EU leaders are set to decide at a summit in

October whether there is enough common ground to move on to trade talks.Common ground was very much lacking last week after British foreign minister and leading Brexiteer Boris Johnson remarked that the EU could ‘go whistle’ over its massive Brexit bill demand, drawing a rebuke from Barnier. Johnson, who was in Brussels on Monday separately to meet his 27 EU colleagues, said he hoped the bloc would accept the "very fair and serious offer" Britain had made on the rights of EU citizens. Hammond, one of Johnson's main cabinet rivals, said Sunday that Britain will take responsibility for the money it owes, but dismissed the 100-billion-euro figure as “ridiculous”.

espite efforts from what are now being called the “Fun Police” to stop entertainment there are still loads of gigs going on this week. The big names love it here. Diana Ross tribute, Celena Deans continues her Summer tour. On Tuesday she will be at La Bodegueta in Lo Crispin (Always a fun time to be had there) and on Friday at the Med in El Raso. (Personally I love the décor and would move in if I could!) Fresh back from his chilly tour of Bavaria is ever popular and slightly mad Greg Bannis, who was the ex lead singer for Hot Chocolate band. Singing Hot Chocolate, Bob Marley and anything else that comes into his head you can catch this amazing and fun filled act on Tuesday at the Pub, Masa Square in Gran Alacant, Thursday at El Valle in Hondon, Friday at Hermanos in Playa Flamenca CC. Twice on Saturday when he hosts the pool party at Camping Florantilles on the CV95 in San Miguel and in the evening at Players Lounge in Villamartin Plaza. As if that wasn’t enough work in this heat, Greg will be rounding off the week with one of the annual pool parties at Posh Club in La Marina. Two more big acts who start their Costa Blanca tours are Curtis and Paul Michael. Curtis has a stream of credits to his name for not only being a superb and talented guitar/vocalist but was the musical director for “We Will Rock You” stage show, has worked with the Four Tops and was in “The Meatloaf Story”, just to name a few. With several bands to his name it has taken some organising to get Curtis back to our shores so that we can all enjoy a act who has been described as “not your normal guitar vocalist” Also making a welcome return to the Costa Blanca is Paul Michael. With a huge vocal range, classically trained Paul will be donning his fat suit to amaze audiences with his Pavarotti Tribute show on Friday at El Rey in Balsicas. Paul, a former resident in Spain has missed the area so much that he is thinking of moving back, which is good news for venues everywhere. Paul can be found in many venues next month and tickets are selling fast for all his shows. If you follow me on facebook, then you may have seen that I will be doing my first show for nearly 2 years on September 16th. After my Benidorm trip, I have managed to persuade Ireland and the UK’s top George Michael Tribute to do a one off show before he starts his Australia tour in October. Joining him will be the phenomenal Tina Turner Tribute “Benidorm Tina”. There is a serious side to this show too. Last year I promised Tasha Lynch who suffers from Mitochondrial Disease that I would help her by doing a raffle at the first show that I organised. And that is exactly what is going to happen. Details are on the website or contact me as below As always, if you would like your events listed, please email me full details in plenty of time please to:letsrockshowslive@gmail.com. Venues needing acts can find me all over Facebook (bit of an addict ha, ha) or go to my website www.lrshows.com or telephone 697501992 Keep Entertainment Live on the Costa Blanca Jax Lawson xx

Bodies of a British couple found in a flat in Manilva The Guardia Civil is investigating the deaths of British couple whose bodies were found inside their home in Manilva. The man was aged 71 and his wife 80, and so far nothing has been ruled out over the cause of the deaths or the circumstances surrounding them. The discovery was made at their home just a few metres from the Guardia Civil barracks in Sabinillas. Entering the home, officers from the Guardia Civil found the bodies in different rooms. Both were in an advanced state of decomposition, indicating the date of death as more than over two weeks ago The 80 year old woman was found on the floor of her bedroom face down, dressed in street clothing. The body of the man was found in the lounge, face up and partially clothed, according to distinct sources consulted. During the forensic inspection, which took more than three hours, there was no sign of violence or any indications as why the couple had died in separate rooms. Their home was locked from the inside, which initially ruled out any third party, although the detectives from the Judicial Police Unit of the Guardia Civil maintain all options are open, until a complete forensic investigation gives a cause of death. The autopsy will be performed at the Legal Medical Institute in Mรกlaga to establish the cause of death.

Jason via email asks: I have recently acquired a fairly new laptop with Windows10 and before that I had Windows XP on an old Acer Tower PC. If I ever ran into a minor problem on my old Tower system I could easily restore my computer to a previous time before the problem occurred by using System Restore. I have experienced a number of problems with Windows 10 and my HP printer but I cannot for the life of me find the old fashion system restore program. Can I still do this in Windows10 and, if so, how? Aunty Says: Hi Jason. You can still use the old style System Restore but Microsoft have made it a little more difficult to find than it was in Windows XP. The easiest way to find it is to click the Windows/Start icon (looks like a flag) and type SYSTEM RESTORE which should bring up the System Restore control panel. You may first need to switch on System Restore by creating a restore point. Jim via email asks: Hi Aunty, somehow I have deleted all my WhatsApp history conversation with my wife! I have tried unsuccessfully to get them back but is this something you can help me with? I have an iPhone 7Plus. Aunty Says: Hello Jim. WhatsApp automatically does a backup at

around 3AM everyday which it may restore if you uninstall and reinstall the WhatsApp app, but you will only know by trying. If you want to keep a more controlled backup you can tell WhatsApp to backup to Google One Drive from the “settings” and “chats” menu via the three small dots top right.

Elizabeth from Rojales asks: Hi Aunty. For some reason my Google translator has stopped working. When I copy some Spanish text from a document into the Google Translator app on my desktop, it just sits there showing a spinning symbol but nothing happens. I am using Windows 10 and I use Google Chrome to access the Internet. Any ideas? Aunty Says:

www.costablancapeople.com

Hello Elizabeth. I have always accessed the Google Translator via the official Google website www.translate.google.com which seems to work 100% of the time. Because you are using Google’s Chrome as your browser you can also easily add the translator extension as a permanent fixture (which you can get from the Chrome Web Store) which will allow you to easily and quickly translate a whole webpage using the right mouse button. Pam via email asks: Hello Aunty, I have a Windows 10 laptop and I am recently getting a message that my trial version of McAfee will expire soon. I don’t remember signing up for a trial but should I go ahead with this or just ignore it, what are my alternatives? Aunty Says: I wouldn’t bother Pam. The free trial from McAfee was probably preinstalled on your laptop or sneaked on when you did an Adobe Reader install. Windows 10 comes with Windows Defender built in, which coupled with the free Malwarebytes, should give you adequate protection. No amount of security programs will guarantee you 100% protection but as long as you use a bit of common sense and you’re careful as to what websites & links you are accessing you should be fine. Email me your questions to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.co m and I will see you all next week

Audi to recall thousands of cars over emissions scandal Thousands of Audi luxury cars are to be recalled amid the continuing scandal over ‘fake’ emission results. Owners of the German car giant’s top end estate, saloon and SUV models will be asked to return them so the engines can be fitted with new software to reduce the amount of pollutants they emit. The move is part of an attempt by Audi to avoid its cars being caught up in proposed bans of diesel cars from German cities, following the scandal over Volkswagen falsifying its emission results. Earlier this week Mercedes-Benz announced that almost every one of its cars sold in Britain will have to have their diesel engines adjusted to reduce pollution levels. The move will affect three million cars across Europe and hundreds of thousands in the UK and cost the firm around £195 million. Now Audi has issued a similar ‘voluntary recall’ of up to 850,000 cars fitted with six-cylinder and eight-cylinder diesel engines, mainly sold in Europe. Also included in the recall are Porsche and VW vehicles fitted

with the same type of V6/V8 TDI, EU5/EU6 engines. Audi said it was unable to say at this stage how many of the engines were fitted to vehicles sold in Britain, but it is thought to run into thousands. The firm’s announcement came just days after the government in the German state of BadenWürttemberg agreed to abandon

plans to restrict diesel engines if older cars could be adjusted to produce fewer pollutants. Audi spokesman Udo Rügheimer said: “Audi intends to reduce overall emissions, especially in urban areas. We are convinced that this program will counteract possible bans on vehicles with diesel engines. “We aim to maintain the future viability of diesel engines for our customers and to make a contribution towards improving air quality.”

Work to adjust the engines takes around an hour and will be carried out free of charge for customers. But Audi UK said it did not yet know when its customers would be contacted to take their cars to an approved dealer or garage for the adjustments to be made. At the same time Audi, which is part of the Volkswagen Group, is facing legal action alongside VW, Seat and Skoda from more than 35,000 British motorists affected by the 2015 emissions scandal. This followed Volkswagen’s admission that it equipped vehicles with illegal software that meant they passed emissions tests, only to exceed limits in everyday driving. Mr Rügheimer said the recall was not directly related to the scandal, but acknowledged that the fallout had severely damaged the reputation of diesel cars, leading to growing calls for them to be banned. “The public perception is that diesel is bad, so for this reason we are trying to go further than the existing emission limits and improve emissions in real driving conditions beyond the current legal requirements,” he said.

New Rules for Pickup Trucks Owners of pickup vehicles may need to be aware that new rules came into force in Spain in July. In particular, the pickup with a maximum mass not more than 3.500 kg and whose seating position and loading area are not located in a single compartment and whose total height does not exceed 2M, shall be governed by the same rules of movement as passenger vehicles. The full text of the regulation change details how within the dynamism and evolution of the automobile market, new

bodies and configurations have emerged that adapt vehicles to specific demands. Amongst these new bodies, introduced some time ago in the market, was the configuration known commonly as a pickup. Pickup vehicles are characterised, in the main, as being a vehicle that has an area on its body where merchandise can be carried, normally in an open top area. Due to this particularity, and in the absence of a proper classification for this type of vehicle within the definitions of the Reglamento General de VehĂculos(General Regulations of Vehicles), pickup vehicles have been classified up to now as a type of commercial vehicle. In this respect, the definition of a truck in the Reglamento General de VehĂculos indicates that it is a vehicle with four wheels or more, designed and constructed for the carriage of goods, the cab is not integrated in the rest of the bodywork and with a maximum of 9 seats, including the driver. Now, within the definition of the vehicle as a pickup, it is defined in the scope of the directive as: A vehicle whose maximum mass is not more than 3,500 kg, where the seating positions and the loading area are not located in a single compartment. Therefore, from July 7, pickup vehicles with a maximum mass not exceeding 3,500 kg, where the seating positions and the loading area are not located in a single compartment and whose total height is not more than 2metres, will be governed by the same rules of circulation applied to passenger vehicles. To facilitate their identification and control, a specific field will be enabled in the Vehicle Register for pickup vehicles. The above does not affect in any case any other obligations (fiscal, periodicity of ITVs, etc), that can be derived from its formal classification as a commercial vehicle by criteria of construction in the Vehicle Registry. Big guns Imanyo Golf Society clash The fixtures have been published for Group 4 in the Preferente division and the opening day has thrown up some mouthwatering contests. Last season's demoted clubs from division three, CD Torrevieja and Almoradi battle it out on 3rd September in an opener that is all about setting the tone and establishing promotion credentials. Coincidentally, these two met at the Vicente Garcia in the first division three match last season, with Torry coming out on top by 3-2. It proved to be a much disputed result, with Almoradi challenging the result, saying that Torry should not have played Matias, who had been cautioned in his last regional division match and should have been serving a ban. Almoradi won that judgement, but later lost the points and the decision in an appeal by Torry, which reversed the original judgement. Almoradi has retained many of their squad from last season, clearly believing that they can bounce back at the first time of asking. Conversely, Torry are struggling to establish a full quota of players and has put back their training schedule, originally planned for last night (Monday 24th). Their leading goal scorer from last season, Alejandro Pastor, has signed for Crevillente . He made his debut for his new club in a friendly against Elche on Saturday night but ended up on the losing side by 1-0. Last year's Preferente champions, Villajoyosa, kick off at home and host Orihuela B. This new side is a replacement for Albatera, who shut up shop at the end of last term, with their place being snapped up by Orihuela as their feeder side. Thader contested the play offs in June and they also enjoy a home tie first time up, when they entertain Villena. President of CD Torrevieja, Vicente Boix, confirmed that the club will start training on Thursday night. They could not get their entire new intake together for the start of the week, having players supplied by the City of Malaga academy, as well as a number of home grown talent. They intend to be serious contenders for the top three, with nothing less than a return to the national division three in everyone's mind. Jeff Scott Vice president CD Torrevieja

A great turnout of players for the third year of competing for the Plane parking trophy, Plane Parking are a large company in the region who take care of your vehicles whilst you are out of the country and have secure parking at Alicante and Murcia airports. The day started with a full English breakfast in Imanyo’s, the format was singles full handicap Stableford played in three categories, with an overall winner with the best score on the day and that winner came from group B. On arriving at Altorreal we received a friendly and organised greeting from Antonio and his staff. The course was in fantastic condition; the only thing that was noticed was that the bunkers needed edges cutting back. As you know we are in the middle of summer and the temperature was in the mid 30’s, so hard going for some of us but the eventual winner, Alan Ralph, just missed paring the course.

Winner of the Plane Parking Trophy from category “B” was “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph with 34 points, runner up was “The Wine Collector” Brian Court with 27 points. Group “A” winner was “Mr Regular” John Mcmillan with 30 points, runner up was Martin Gadney with 29 points. Group “C” winner was also “Keep it in the Family” Wendy Ralph with 23 points, runner up was “Mr Endeavour” Wally Donovan with 17 points. There were seven nearest the pins, hole 2 in two shots “Mr Regular” John Mcmillan, hole 5 in one shot “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph, hole 8 no winner, hole 10 in one shot Graham Rumsey, hole 13 in three shots “Mr Regular” John Mcmillan, hole 17 in one shot “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph. The presentation was held at Imanyo’s where good food and a few drinks were waiting. Thank you to Plane Parking Directors Nick and Marianne Baker for providing and presenting all the prizes, also thank you to Antonio, Norma and staff at Imanyo’s Bar for the fantastic food and great hospitality. The football card was won by “Keep it in the Family”Wendy Ralph with Southampton raising €20 for our charity, Caritas Daya Nueva. The Members Golf Society It’s just about an hour by car to the impressive venue of Alicante Golf, that’s if you can find it! But impressive it is, the condition of the course was excellent except for a little sand on the greens leftover from recent hollow tinning. Slower greens usually play into the hands of the higher handicapper, today was an exception with the best scores coming from Gold category members and Kenny “Isaac” Hunter showing form that we haven’t seen the likes of from him in a long time, welcome to your new handicap “Isaac” let’s see how you score next week! From the 6 par 3’s on this course there are 2 that should be reached by all, that’s if the ball doesn’t find the water of course. Well no one took the N.T.P. on hole 3 just 124m but John Hettrick did hit the short 12th and managed to hole the putt for his share of the €48 in the 2’s pot the other player to make a 2 was Carsten Landaas on the 6thother N.T.P. winners were Joe Dean 8, N. Williams 15 and Derek(I beat Joe Dean on the 17th) Sullivan. With just a couple of guests this week the winner was M. Ericsson 28 pts. Alan “cuddly from Dudley” Rickers had the lowest of 4 players to take 3rd place in the Silver

category with 32 pts. Treasurer, Alex Goslan was a point better to take 2nd place on slightly higher handicap with 33 points from Graham Smith. Kenny Winton’s 34 pts. off 9 handicap was good enough to secure 3rd place in the Gold category, 2nd was”Viking” Carsten Landaas with his 35 pts. But as mentioned earlier Kenny “Isaac” Hunter was first with the best score of the day, 39 points. Photo: N.T.P. winners. This year’s anniversary Competition will be played at La Marquesa on the 9/8/17 followed by a meal in the clubhouse during the presentation, all members who participate in this competition will eat for

La Siesta Bowls Club San Miguel Golf Society The summer season came to the end with the final match for the Wasps in the South Alicante League Spitfire Division and with club’s Summer Knockout Finals. played over a number of weeks was won by Jo Elkin,Dave Davies and John Ball. Thanks to the owners of the Rinks Jim and Lyn for the excellent service given to us this year and to all of the Club Committee for their commitment to the club in the past year. All the players may now have a rest over the next few weeks and be ready to start action again in September ready for the start of the Winter Season By Rod Edgerton

Mixed Single Winners

The number of members playing usually drops a bit in the summer, and this was the case for this week’s gathering at Las Colinas where 29 attended. However, the inclusion of 7 guests added to a respectable turnout. The course had been extensively worked on, both fairways and greens, the latter being very unlike their usual true and rapid state. Some tee boxes were also in poor shape, again not normal. Going against the way of things most weeks, Bronze and Silver category prize winners actually fared better than their counterparts in Gold. Several who came in last time out at Alicante also got a mention this week (e.g. Captain and Vice-Captain), one of which included the only lady playing and day’s joint top scorer Marg Birtwistle, Hugh Reilly being the other member to post 40 points. The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 3rd Norman Padmore (35), 2nd Kyree Skarsmoen (38), and 1st Marg Birtwistle with 40 points

Silver Category: 3rd Theo Boelhouwer (36), 2nd Tony Smale (39), and 1st Hugh Reilly with 40 points Gold Category: 3rd Mike Freeman (33), 2nd Darren Temple (34), and 1st Steve Higgins with 35 points. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Mike Greatorex (hole 5), Hugh Reilly (7), Steve Higgins (10), Darren Hancock (7), Theo Boelhouwer (14), and Aaron Clinton (17). The Abacus was won by Mike Fearnehough The Best Guest prizes went to winner Matthew Taylor (33) and runner-up Aaron Clinton (32 on CB) Our thanks go to the staff at Las Colinas for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Your week in Sport ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

In front of a full house at the Home of Cricket, England played India in the Women’s Cricket World Cup Final. England, already beaten once by India in the tournament, batted first and put on a below-par 228. India were cruising at 130-2 and the game was looking done and dusted but, even with Jenny Gunn dropping the most simple of catches with India nine down needing ten runs to win, England won the match and the World Cup. Anya Shrubsole turned the game on it’s head taking 5-11 off 19 deliveries in her second spell, pretty much winning the game on her own. It’s fair to say Jenny Gunn might have bought her a drink or two by way of thanks. Chris Froome has secured his 4th Tour de France title, his third in a row. Froome was crowned champion having not won a single stage, the third man to have done this. As I often am in the world of sport, I’m in a state of confusion. Froome will win the whole thing having not won a single stage. I don’t get it, but please don’t waste any time trying to explain it to me. Anyway, this title is unlikely to make Froome anymore popular with the public and being on Team Sky is hardly helping his cause thanks to the recent performances of Sir Dave Brailsford, who when he reads this might suggest where I can stick that sentence. I have a question. How on earth is British diver Tom Daley only 23? Well, he

Chris Froome

is and he won the World Aquatics 10m Platform Gold over the weekend. As ever, Daley was going head-to-head or diveto-dive with the Chinese legend Chen Aisen and needed his best ever dive in the last round to get the gold medal. Daley delivered, almost banishing the disappointment of Rio forever. Well, until a reporter asked “how does that compare to Rio?” anyway. Finally, and yes I know it’s not really sport but it’s been a quiet week and we don’t do golf in this column thank god, let us talk poker. Scott Blumstein, a big lad of 25 years with an accounting degree (because that’s important background knowledge, right?) won a poker tournament at the first attempt on Saturday night. How is this news, a guy winning a poker tournament having never entered before? Oh, you know.

advantage of no one fishing the first two pegs he came out tops with over 39kgs on the pole and feeder. I was drawn next but one peg to him but could not manage the catch rate; I did have a shock whilst playing a Barbel that had snagged me on the bottom, when four green legs appeared that turned out to be a chair that had been abandoned. Dave Hutchinson on top of the long channel fished well with the pole to take the 3rd place with over 17kgs. The Tench now seemed to have settled in, with fish up to a lb in weight showing. 1st Ian Brown with 39.360kgs fishing the pole and feeder using pellet 2nd Terry Screen with 18.869kgs fishing the pole using pellet 3rd Dave Hutchinson with 17.410kgs fishing the pole using pellet and corn There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Bill Reade on 966790416 TIGHT LINES Terry Screen

RODS & REELS We fished the 13th and penultimate round of the Winter Series at the El Bosquet Complex on the 19th July. The spawning season seems to have been very successful as each peg is teaming with fry. Ian Brown managed to go from rags to riches as yesterday he dry netted, but today taking Tom Daley

Oh Lordy, Lordy. We live in a world where a club has spent £75m on a pair of fullbacks and plans to chuck another £55m out there and get another one. We live in a world where a club can pay £75m on a centre forward and still not be considered the league favourites. And we live in a world where West Ham United sign a player from an equally Last week saw numbers increase again in both the ladies and junior section, especially on the Sunday morning thanks to all of the great publicity and the hard work been put in by the players helping to push the recruitment forward. Organisers said, “It is really good seeing this new team going in the right direction as it takes a lot of hard work by the people involved at the club to do this. Make their dream come true to get at least 30 players by September ready for training to enter the league. This would be a great achievement.” Due to the summer festivals etc it would be best to contact Javi on the number below to check where the training is, but normally on Wednesday it will be on the beach at Naufragos Beach Torrevieja from 20.30-22.00 and on Sunday in the morning at the athletics track at 11.30. Organisers are looking forward to seeing even more people down there this week, so come and join the newest ladies team in the area and join in the fun. For more information about the team and training contact Javi on 603 727 179

Because he won $8.1m for winning it. That’s all. To be fair to him, it wasn’t just an impromptu game with a few Russian billionaires for laughs. Scott beat 7,199 other players on the night to go home having just about won his stake money back, and then some.

ABBEY ANGLING This week we fished the 9th and penultimate round of the Summer Series at the Embalsa de la Pedrera on the 18th July. Now that the water is receding very fast, it is leaving a silt band which can be up to two foot deep, so you need to set up with caution, despite that it is still fishing quite well with seven double figure weights on the day. Richard King making the best of the draw on the second point, although he did struggle for the first couple of hours, but eventually took the top spot with over 23kgs, Dave Hutchinson fishing the pole and waggler was catching well until the wind got up but still managed the 2nd place. Banded pellet still seems to be the best bait at the moment. 1st Richard King with 23.720kgs fishing the method feeder using pellet 2nd Dave Hutchinson with 20.720kgs fishing the pole waggler and feeder using pellets 3rd Doug Hornblow with 19.980kgs fishing the feeder using pellet There are still some vacancies available for membership at the club All details are available on our new website abbeyangling.es or from me on 965328368

Pep Guardiola

mid-table club for way more than he is worth and will regret the decision in 12 months time, so some things never change. As we know, Pep Guardiola joined the rest of planet earth in realising that

Manchester City could not possibly win anything further with Pablo Zabaleta, Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna as their number twos and threes so got shot of the lot of them. In his Catalan wisdom, Pep has bought Kyle Walker for £50m and then had a chat with Zinedine Zidane and asked him to swap Danilo for £27m. However, there is still a gaping hole on the left hand side of the pitch, a hole likely to be filled in by £55m worth of Benjamin Mendy who will be the next name on the list titled “The Exodus from Monaco”. If you think City are just throwing their money around, have a look at Paris SaintGermain. They are pretty confident that £199m will bring Barcelona’s Neymar to the French capital, predominantly because that activates the Brazilian’s minimum fee release clause and because none other than Leo Messi has hinted that it could be happening. Just so Neymar doesn’t feel like the only new boy in class, PSG are going to be the latest club to try and prise Alexis Sanchez from Arsene Wenger’s vice like grip, waving £50m under Wenger’s nose to distract him. It must be happening, as Alexis was enjoying a romantic Friday night away in Paris with his three dogs. As ever, there is plenty of transfer chat around Manchester United and Jose Mourinho. Jose is adamant that David De Gea is NOT going to Real Madrid, which is becoming very, very dull now.

Almost as dull is the Nemanja Matic love triangle between Chelsea, United and Juventus. Will someone please just tell us what is really going on? Ed Woodward has seen some sense this summer, and has decided that he won’t pay more than £40m for Eric Dier which

According to Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool are not a selling club having turned down a £72m bid from Barcelona for Philippe Coutinho. I am sure Liverpool are not a selling club, unless that bid becomes more like £90m. Liverpool target, Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk,

Chelsea

means Eric isn’t going anywhere. However, considering United will probably have to pay £40m for Matic, I am not sure who is getting the best deal out of all this. Chelsea, as we know, finally confirmed Alvaro Morata as their new number nine which is, frankly, an upgrade on the days that Steve Sidwell used to wear the shirt. Michy Batshuayi reminded everyone he is still at the club by scoring twice in a meaningless game against Arsenal. Mind you, try telling David Ospina it was meaningless as he put Pedro in hospital.

has played the “not mentally in the right frame of mind to play” card saying he still wants out of the South Coast club and as a result is training on his own. Finally, I think Marko Arnautovic might be slightly confused. He has moved from Stoke City to West Ham (a fact that is hilarious in itself as he has swapped Bojan and Xhakiri for Snodgrass and Noble) for £25m and has called West Ham a massive club. No mate, they have a massive athletics stadium and haven’t been anything other than a wannabe big club for decades.
