Calls for Sofia Alvarez to resign The PSOE of Orihuela has called for Councillor Sofia Álvarez to apologise to the people of Orihuela Costa after blaming residents for there being ‘no fiestas’ in the coastal area.

S

he was answering criticism from the Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa (FAOC) after the cancellation of a Moors and Christians parade that had been planned for last Saturday. Socialist Councillor María García said the comments showed ‘an unacceptable lack of respect for a public official’. Maria Garcia said that ‘blaming the

residents just shows her lack of political stature’ and went on to accuse Sophia Alvarez of arrogance. “You are the one who should work so that the residents have events and fiestas, you are the one who gets a public salary and should be at the service of all citizens, including those who voted for you and those who did not, those who criticise you and those who applaud you, otherwise you should be home,” said Garcia. Maria García also demanded explanations as to why the event was cancelled and not just “for reasons beyond their control”, which is the same phrase used by the Moors and Christians association in explanation. “Someone has to tell the truth,” Garcia said.

She also reminded people that this is the third time Sophia Álvarez has “put her foot in it” with the Moors and Christians. “At the FITUR tourism fair in 2015 the Christian Ambassador missed the parade because there was no bus, in July 2016 an exhibition of Moors and Christians costumes in Orihuela Costa was cancelled without justification and now with less than 24 hours notice a parade, once again in Orihuela Costa, is cancelled because there was no band, leaving more than 40 participants stranded and residents of Orihuela Costa disappointed yet again.”

The church has recently emphasised their role in caring for the environment with a catchy slogan on their church board: ‘God recycles, He made you from dust’. ‘Obviously we are all in favour of taking good care of God’s creation but we have a particular interest in green issues this week,’ explains Maggie Dew from the church. ‘On Sunday it was our harvest festival and this was an opportunity for us to show our gratitude in a practical way by giving some of the things we have to those who are not as fortunate as us.’ Members of the congregation brought donations of non-perishable items to the Harvest festival service and these were distributed to the poor and needy the following day. The church now look forward to hearing the results of the Green Church Award competition and will keep us informed. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE NEWS:

Tony Blair possible mediator role in Catalan crisis

Continued from page 3

interested in finding out more about mediation in conflict situations.

Rowing school season begins The town’s rowing school opened its doors for the 2017/18 season at Real Club Náutico in Torrevieja. The club had a good year last year, with members winning several different titles. The club has been going for thirty years and has a good reputation in the rowing community. It spans both the Real Club Náutico with 70 members and the Club Marina Salinas with 30 registered for the current season.

Valencian day in Torrevieja Monday 9th October was a local bank holiday celebrating the region of Valencia. Events began at 11am in the town’s main square – Plaza de la Constitución where hymns were sung and the community flag was raised. Acknowledgment was also given to the Spanish flag.

Tony Blair is being tipped as a possible mediator in the Catalan independence crisis. The former British prime minister, who was previously a Middle East peace envoy, is reported to be in line for a role mediating between Madrid and Catalan separatists. According to the Daily Express, Blair could put his negotiating skills to use with Catalan Prime Minister Carles Puigdemont looking to break away from Spain. The idea of a third-party mediator in the Catalan crisis has been backed by Blair’s ex-Chief of Staff, Jonathan Powell. A recent panel of EU and Spanish officials, including Spanish European Affairs Minister Jorge Toledo, were asked for possible candidates, with Blair’s name prominent. However, one UKIP senior member slammed the idea, claiming Blair would side with the Madrid government, regardless of any mitigating factors. “Tony Blair is an EU fanatic who will do

whatever Brussels wants – which in this case is to ignore the wishes of the people of Catalunya,” said Ben Walker. “He will take the side of the Spanish government and conveniently ignore the fact the Spanish Constitutional Court is not neutral and does the bidding of the government.” This week the court blocked Catalunya’s parliament from meeting yesterday (Monday 9th October) when Carles Puigdemont was expected to announce Catalunya’s intention to divorce from Spain.

Two boats intercepted On the 7th October a Guardia Civil patrol boat rescued 21 people who were travelling in two boats towards the coast. They were taken to Torrevieja where they were attended to by the Cruz Roja. There was also a boat that landed in Cartagena carrying 11 people. The Guardia Civil notified the press that at 6pm they detected the boat 17 miles from the coast and heading towards Cabo Roig. The sea patrol was sent out and rescued 11 immigrants, all of whom were men and in a good state of health. Back at base another boat was spotted. This time it contained 10 immigrants and five of them were thought to be children.

Runaway car ploughs into terrace On 7th October at 12.45 a car was shunted into two roadside terraces following a collision at the intersection of calle Radio Murcia and calle Vicente Blasco Ibañez in the centre of Torrevieja. Fortunately there were only two people on the terraces at the time and they were able to get out of the way without being injured. The driver of the vehicle was in a state of shock and was attended to by the ambulance service for slight injuries. However, she did not have to be taken to hospital. The crossing where the accident occurred is regulated by a stop sign and the car that lost control was hit from behind by another that failed to stop. The first terrace the car hit belongs to a Turkish Kebab restaurant and the car then travelled into the terrace next to it, this time belonging to a Scandinavian coffee shop. The two clients who were there at the time were able to dodge the vehicle. Two local police cars were soon in attendance and took statements from those who witnessed the incident. They also sealed off the road whilst the Continued on page 6

"The objective of the route is to position the area firmly within the regions gastronomic tourism offer, using that as a hook so that visitors also get know our municipality and its monuments and heritage", said the Councillor. "We have opted for a route of the highest quality, improving the offerings and their economic value, which will fill the streets with life and revitalize the city of Oriol," she explained. Next Monday, 16th October at 10:00am, the Municipal Library Maria Moliner will see the presentation of the jury, the establishments and the tapas dishes, followed by the all important tasting. At the end of this year’s event, prizes will be awarded in each of five categories: Gourmet Tapa, Sweet Tapa, Special Tapa and Gin-tonic which will be a prize awarded by voters on social networks, as will the Prize for the most voted for establishment. The councillor has encouraged the participation of the hotel, bar and restaurant owners of the city and has stated that “it is

expected to exceed the figures of the participants last year in terms of both establishments and visitors, since a promotional campaign will be carried out in the neighbouring provinces and

municipalities in Castilian and English”. From now until the 13th October the registration period for the establishments is open, which can be done at the Tourist Office in the historic centre or by downloading the form from the website of the Council, and processing it through the Central Registry of the City. The October fair BITE SIZE The details of the Feria Sevillanas, which usually takes place in May, have now been announced. The details were shared in a press conference held by Councillor Domingo Pérez on 4th October. The fair will now take place from the 11th October until the 15th and, as usual, its location is the port area of the town. There will be 29 tents this year which is one more than last year. Each tent is organised by an association many of whom offer food and this year ‘Entre amig@s will offer a vegan alternative. People from across the Vega Baja have been invited to participate in what is one of Torrevieja’s favourite annual events. The festival will begin on the 11th October at 8.30pm with the traditional fireworks and music. One of the new ideas for the fair this year takes place on Thursday morning when there will be activities for children including face painting,

storytelling, balloons and workshops from midday. There will also be dance groups and choirs performing and an opportunity for new acts and groups to show what they can do. On Friday there will be a tribute to Sevillanas and on Saturday, after the traditional mass, there will be a procession down to the port area. During the night there will be the performance of the play ‘Viva la copla’ and the announcement of the best stand for 2017. Sunday is the final day and that’s when the horses and riders parade around the port area. There will be the final sevillanas competition and the whole event will conclude at 9.30 pm. It’s hoped that as many people as possible will take part and that the weather will continue to be favourable. Suzanne O’Connell

crashed car was removed from the scene. It is quite customary for restaurants and bars in the area to spill out onto the pavement and the street. However, as in this case, there is always a risk from traffic.

Charity calendar bares all A rather unusual charity calendar has been produced in aid of prostate cancer research. The calendar includes some volunteer models prepared to ‘bare all’ for a good cause. The calendar is meant to amuse but it does have an important message too. It is about raising awareness amongst men and getting them to check out any symptoms of the cancer that they might have. Everything in the calendar is in good taste and it can be purchased at a cost of €6 from the Watering Hole, Razorzedge, La Bodega and Bar Kenz. With a little persuasion all the models agreed to take off their clothes and had the support of their wives and partners.

Reduction in IBI Councillor Hurtado has proposed a reduction in IBI tax of 7.5% in Torrevieja in 2018. Reductions had been agreed during a town hall meeting in October 2016 and could mean a saving of around €37 on an IBI bill of €500. It follows a reduction this year too which saw a family paying an IBI bill of €250 saving €10. There will be additional savings for larger families. Suzanne O’Connell

Six turtles released at La Mata Six, young turtles were freed on 6th October into the sea at La Mata. The turtles had hatched as part of a batch of 82 and were ready to start their new life in the sea. The turtle is rare and only four nests have been registered in Valencia in 200 years. Their release was scheduled as part of a conservation programme that Torrevieja has been developing now for the past ten years. Children from Ciudad del Mar school gave the turtles names and wished them good luck in their future adventures at sea. When the turtles were born they weighed 18 grammes and were four centimetres long. Now they weigh 1.5 kilos and measure 18 cm. The mayor, José Manuel Dolón commented that ‘it is with great pleasure that we can return the turtles to the sea. The project has been a real success. It’s also good that these young people are involved in marine conservation.’ The mayor thanked the different organisations that have been involved and those who continue to do their best to maintain the fragile environmental balance. In particular he thanked the local police, the Guardia Civil, Protección Civil and the coastal services. Thanks also went to different town departments, fishermen, the marinas and those teachers who

continue to raise awareness. The president of the Oceanogràfic Foundation, Celia Calabuig expressed her satisfaction; ‘We are the largest aquarium in Europe but we also want to put out our message of conservation and respect for the oceans. In particular we must be aware of the threat of plastic pollution and how harmful it is to all marine species including these turtles.’ A reminder has been issued that there is a protocol in Torrevieja to ensure that turtles are treated correctly and that their eggs are protected if they should come to shore. If a member of the public becomes aware that there is a turtle nest they should contact the police on 112. Present at the release of the turtles were a French couple, Christine and Patrick, who rescued a turtle last August, which is now recovering in the sea world centre. In July last year some swimmers on Les Palmeres beach discovered a loggerhead turtle about to lay its eggs and alerted the emergency services. The eggs were later moved to the Oceanogràfic and of these, 16 were recovered and the baby turtles cared for. The centre helps to prepare them for the sea including through feeding them the types of food that they will find there. Suzanne O’Connell

Catral Celebrate in style arrests A mother and grandmother have been arrested in Catral for fleeing Belgium with a child. The National Police arrested a woman and her mother in Catral last Wednesday for allegedly stealing a boy aged four from a centre for minors in Belgium. The biological mother of the boy escaped from a psychiatric centre in Belgium where she was being held having come up with a plan with her mother, the boy's grandmother, to take him to Spain, according to the National Police. Both women were arrested for having fled their country and taking the boy in contravention of a judicial order. The boy was under the supervision of a court for minors in Belgium as his mother had been admitted for psychiatric care. The two women took advantage of the fact that the grandmother had permission to pick him up from school and once she was with her grandson the mother escaped and the three fled towards Spain, where they stayed for four months until they were located and arrested. The boy has been taken to the Alicante Provincial Care Home until he can be taken back to Belgium while the arrested women have been passed to the National Court to carry out the extradition process. The two women both face a punishment which according to the Belgian Penal Code could be up to five years in prison.

Open day at the animal shelter Torrevieja’s municipal animal shelter held an open day on Saturday 30th September. It was an opportunity for them to demonstrate the conditions the animals are living in and what is done to help them. One of the main reasons for the day was to find homes for those dogs and cats that have been abandoned there. The animals took part in a parade for people to be able to see them better. There was also an information table and people were available to answer any questions.

Several councillors were in attendance, including councillor Carmen Morate who is responsible for the shelter, the mayor José Manuel Dolón and councillor Fanny Serrano. Many volunteers were there too. As councillor Morate pointed out, their help and support is relied upon. It was a good opportunity for people to see the dogs outside of their cages and be made aware of the work that goes into looking after them. Suzanne O’Connell

Elche Medieval Festival More fires in The city of Elche has officially presentation the XXII edition of the Medieval Festival of Elche, organised by the City of Elche, to be held from 26th October to 1st November. The event was attended by Patricia Maciá, Councillor for Culture of the City of Elche, Joan Castejón, artist and coauthor of this year's poster and Julián Sáez, programmer of the municipality of Elche. This year will see a higher level of performances, music and theatre. During the presentation Patricia Maciá said that "this year the Festival will have good theatre, good music, dance and fire”. She explained that this year´s festival is more than simply a medieval market, that the market is only an accompaniment to all the performances planned. In relation to the programming Julián Sáez explained that this year the team "have tried to ensure that this edition has a different story line. It is a look at the Middle Ages from across the centuries”. He also highlighted the great presence of the Misteri d'Elx with its own production "The historical sound of the Festa" that will be held on 1st November at 6:00pm in the Basilica of Santa Maria with free entrance, directed by Rubén Pacheco. A conference under the same title will take place on 31st October in the chapel of the Poor Clares. He also highlighted the special tribute to the author Jose Estruch from Alicante, which will feature an exhibition which will run from 23rd October to 8th January in the hall of the

Great Theatre of Elche and a theatrical performance by Paco Alberola "The theatrical look of José Estruch (National Prize of Theater )” that will be held on 30th October at 7:30pm in the same location as the exhibition. The councillor listed the different activities of the festival among which the actions of the Poor Clares should be

highlighted. On October 26th, "Arda il mio core", Spanish and Italian love songs, on the 27th "The Gothic Lady", with the voice of María Altadill and the medieval lute and viola of Felipeña Mascuñano and Saturday 28th "De Missione Musicorum" by the Swiss Ryosuke Sakamoto & Joan Boronat. Also, the councillor highlighted the performance "The Sermon of the buffoon" Albert Boadella to be held at the Great Theatre of Elche on Sunday 29th October. Finally it was announced that the medieval market will be in the city from 26th to 29th October next to the Basilica of Santa Maria. Mireille Toddingon

Guardamar

The pine woods in Guardamar suffered another fire last week, which had no less than four different starting points. The fire brigade sent three aerial vehicles, two ground teams and two fire engines from Alicante, three vehicles from Torrevieja and Almoradí and two units from Orihuela. “Again the rapid intervention of the forces of order, fire fighters and aerial measures has stopped something from getting much worse,” assured Mayor José Luis Sáez after it had been extinguished. “This afternoon I saw for myself (along with other local residents) how these starting points had been made just 30 metres from where we were. This or these ne’er-do-wells are laughing in our faces,” he said on his Facebook profile. He asked for public collaboration to identify the pyromaniac or pyromaniacs who are causing these fires. The area had two more fires last week, the one on Monday burning a hectare and a half of protected woods and shrubs, and another on Wednesday that had three different starting points.

Beach statistics revealed It’s been a busy summer on Torrevieja’s beaches and now the final figures are coming in from the lifeguard service. The conclusions were announced on the 2nd October by councillor Javier Manzanares, who is the councillor for beaches. There is good news. Of the 242 rescues that were completed by the lifeguards, no one drowned. Altogether there were 2,881 interventions during the summer season, many of them the result of stings. Between the 1st June and 15th September lifeguards were stationed on the beaches of La Mata, Los Locos, El Cura and Los Náufragos. During this time the lifeguards made 242 rescues and attended to four heart attacks, including one person who sadly died in the ambulance on the way to hospital. There were 1,004 stings that were treated and 1,010 wounds attended to. Councillor Manzanares praised the lifeguard service whilst also expressing his sorrow at the death of a 70 year old man who was found floating in the water on 1st August in an area that was not staffed with lifeguards. The tragedy happened in Cala Cornuda which is a rocky area and difficult to access. In spite of this, a lifeguard did retrieve the body even though it was not in an area he was down to patrol. As a result of his bravery the town hall has recommended that he be put forward to the regional council for his actions and be awarded recognition for this. Overall, following discussion between the mayor and the councillor for beaches, there was a positive response to the statistics. However, there are one or two adjustments to make following the first year of the new service. Questions were posed about the possibility of having lifeguards in some of the coves which are not currently covered by the service. Councillor Manzanares indicated that this might be a possibility and that they are also considering the option of extending the amount of time that the

beaches are patrolled. However, the councillor also asked that the public remain sensible about the

risks they take when swimming and obey the flags that the lifeguards use to indicate water conditions. In total There were: • 65 people treated for allergies • 1004 stings attended to – including by jellyfish • 40 cases of sunburn • 100 insect stings • 1010 wounds • 135 eye washes • 242 people rescued from the sea • 1 boat rescued • 41 lost people • 4 heart attacks Any injury is lamentable, but at least it seems that those responsible for keeping Torrevieja’s beaches safe this year, did a good job. A lot of Australian and south African plants do very well in our area, but there is a genus in the Australian plants that’s hardly talked about, and that’s the Hakea. However, there are many hakeas that can contribute to a spectacular garden.

Hakeas are excellent garden plants and are useful for a number of purposes in the garden and the larger species, in particular, are excellent for screening. In addition, the flowers of all hakeas produce nectar and are excellent for attracting birds. CULTIVATION Most hakeas tolerate a wide range of soil and climate conditions. They grow well in sandy and clay loams, preferring a site in full sun or partial shade. They need good drainage that's the most important thing. Water them until they get established. When established they are really tough plants. FERTILIZING Like most members of the Protea family, hakeas have a distinctive root system (proteoid roots) consisting of tight groupings of many small “rootlets”. These are believed to enable the plants to more efficiently take up nutrients from the nutrient-deficient soils where many of the species occur naturally. In cultivation this means that the plants can be adversely affected by fertilizers, particularly phosphorus. So keep fertilizing to a minimum using only low-phosphorus, slowrelease fertilizers or do not fertilize at all.

PRUNING Hakeas respond well to regular, annual pruning where about one-third of the plant is removed. This promotes branching and produces a neat and compact plant with a bushy shape. Some plants can be cut back severely if they develop a “straggly” shape, but others will not tolerate this treatment. If in doubt, always leave some green foliage on the plant. PROPAGATION Unlike their close relatives, the grevilleas, hakeas come true to seed. Just take a seed pod - use secateurs and gloves because they can be prickly - put it into a paper bag and put it onto the window sill of your car where it is hot. The seed pods crack open, revealing the seeds. No pre-sowing treatment is required. The seeds should be placed on a moist seed mix, covered lightly and kept moist. Germination will vary from 15-100 days, depending on temperature and species. Initially seedlings emerge with their dark seed coat attached - most shed it quickly but it may be necessary to intervene gently to prevent misshapen stems. Then transplant them and they grow beautifully. Marc Vijverberg

Traditional Spanish cookery course Along with the beaches, guaranteed sunshine and sangria, Spanish food is another reason many expats love living here in Spain. However, if you have ever tried to make an authentic tasting paella or traditional tapas, then you’ll know it is not quite as easy as you think. Try as you might there is just something in the way a native Spaniard rustles up dishes that make them taste, well...Spanish. However, luckily, the answer is now at your

finger tips, as local lady Begona Josa del Portillo is once again running her hugely successful Spanish cookery course, through which she will pass on recipes that have been passed down through the generations of her family from mother to daughter. These lessons will cover the key signature dishes of Spain we all know and

love, but also ones that are regional or more traditional than the commercial dishes – so you really can impress your friends and family with some ‘real’ Spanish cooking. The course will be held once a month, on a Friday, in San Miguel - the actual date to be arranged each month to suit those taking part, but with the first lesson being held on Friday 13th October at 3pm. Each lesson will last for two hours and during that time Begona will create two traditional dishes from scratch – and each from a different region of Spain. Not only will she show exactly how to make authentic Spanish dishes she will give an insight into the ingredients, what they are and how to choose them. Begona has lived in many areas of Spain in her life, in the countryside, where she was raised, in cities and near to the coast and therefore has an extensive knowledge of Spanish culture, heritage and history all of which she chats about while she creates the most delicious you’ve tried. Even better, at the end of each lesson the students get to eat the wonderful plates of food, accompanied by a glass of vino, of course. Over the months the course will help build-up a comprehensive knowledge of ingredients, flavours, tastes, dishes and cooking in general. The course will run through the winter and into 2018, with a break for the festivities. Places must be booked in advance as places are limited. For further information or to book a place on the course call Begona on 622 188 772.

I can’t tell mum

I can’t let go

I am getting married next year, and there’s one family member who my mother will want at the wedding, but I do not. I can’t tell her the reason why, but this person said something nasty to me when I was a teenager. It was deliberately out of earshot of my mother. It was hurtful to me, and a two-faced betrayal to my mother. I have never forgotten it, and vowed to have nothing more to do with this person. Thankfully, moving away has been a great help in not having to mix. Now my wedding looms. What do I do?

My wife and I divorced 7 years ago after I had an affair. We have a daughter who is 10. We both agreed at the time to separate because neither of us felt the same anymore. It was fairly amicable and I have regular access to my daughter. Since then my ex has had relationships that have meant nothing to me. But now she has met and married someone who is older, handsome, very successful and very wealthy, and I find myself feeling very envious and resentful. I think I want my ex-wife back.

As hard as it is going to be, if I were you I would bite the bullet for one day and invite this person. It would upset your mother if you had to tell her the reason why, and from what you tell me there are extended family involved, so if you exclude this particular person, you would upset their immediate family also. I understand that she said something nasty to you, however you could use this opportunity to show her that it hasn’t bothered you.

I understand how hard this must be for you, however you walked away from the marriage several years ago, so you can’t now be regretting it just because your ex-wife has found someone whom you envy. You had an affair and I expect this hurt her greatly. Would you be feeling the same if this man was not rich and successful, or would you be getting on with you life? Put all your energy into your relationship with your daughter.

Here you will usually have a breast examination followed by one or more tests, such as a mammogram, ultrasound scan, core biopsy or fine needle aspiration. Results from these tests will determine whether or not you have breast cancer.

Breast cancer staging and grades Staging means how big the cancer is and whether it has spread. Grading means how abnormal the cancer cells look under a microscope. Doctors use the stage and grade of a cancer to help them decide which treatment you need. There are different systems used to stage breast cancer. The most common one is the TNM system. Another is the number staging system. The TNM staging system stands for Tumour, Node, Metastasis. • T describes the size of the tumour • N describes whether there are any cancer cells in the lymph nodes • M describes whether the cancer has spread to a different part of the body

www.costablancapeople.com

The number staging system divides breast cancers into 4 stages, from 1 to 4 - early, locally advanced and secondary breast cancer. Early breast cancer means the cancer hasn't spread beyond the breast or the lymph nodes in the armpit on the same side of the body. So, the cancer hasn't spread to any other part of the body. Local recurrence means cancer that has come back in the area of the breast after treatment. Locally advanced breast cancer means the cancer hasn't spread to another part of the body but might be: • bigger than 5 cm across • growing into the skin or muscle of the chest • present in the lymph nodes in the armpit, and the nodes are stuck to each other or to other structures Secondary breast cancer is also called metastatic breast cancer or stage 4 breast cancer. It means that the cancer has spread to other parts of the body, such as the liver or bones. Breast cancers can be: • low grade – grade 1 (slow growing) • intermediate grade – grade 2 • high grade – grade 3 (faster growing) Low grade cancers tend to grow more slowly than high grade. High grade cancers are more likely to come back after treatment. But the grade can only give a guide to how any individual cancer will behave and individual cancers may behave differently.

What are the treatments for breast cancer? Treatments can be very effective if the symptoms are caught early, which is why Breast Cancer Awareness Month is so important - to improve knowledge of the early signs and symptoms of the disease, and to help save lives. Treatments for breast cancer include surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Hormone or biological treatments are also used in some cases. Treatments can be very effective and almost nine in ten women survive breast cancer for five years or more. For more information on early detection and support, contact the AECC or MABS.

Tourists urged to keep coming to 'safe and welcoming' Spain Tour operators across Spain are pleading with travellers not to scrap their holiday plans based upon the aggressive police action in Catalunya last Sunday, assuring them that the country is as safe and welcoming as ever and that most of its inhabitants condemn the violence. A number of cancellations have been reported as a result of tourists from overseas worrying that they will not be safe, and from others who have joined a Twitter-wide boycott in protest over the police's actions on referendum day. Residents and industry professionals stress: “Spain is safe, there are no disturbances outside Catalunya. Please don't boycott Spain – you're not harming the government or the police by refusing to holiday here; you're only harming the people whose living depends upon the tourism industry.” A Madrid woman who manages holiday apartments says a family from the USA called off their trip at the last minute, saying: “We don't know if other cities will be affected, so we don't feel comfortable taking our nine-month-old son with us if we're not sure about the situation.” The letting manager said she tried her best to persuade them that the problems were in Catalunya, not in Madrid which is around 400 kilometres away, but they would not be convinced. She worries that the police aggression might have seriously harmed the holiday industry, which has been buoyant for the last three years or so. Twitter messages from the UK and USA

have been published in Spanish national media, reading: “My UK family, friends and I will not holiday in Spain following this appalling violent behaviour,” and, “Yes! Boycott Spain! Police beat and shot at voters in Catalunya! 20-year-old boy lost an eye!”

The public and the tourism sector are keen to reassure potential travellers that the violence only affected those who were physically voting on the Sunday, or those involved in protests, and only in the north-eastern region – and stressing that Spain has always been and continues to be statistically one of the safest countries in Europe, if not the world. To those travellers who refuse to go to Spain as a way of expressing their disgust at the police action on Sunday, they urge them to reconsider. “The only ones who'll 'get the

message' are the millions whose livelihoods would be affected by a tourism boycott, and many of them condemn the violence just as much,” said one tourism industry spokeswoman. “The footage broadcast all over the world on Sunday are a source of concern; the extreme harshness on the part of security forces was not necessary,” said the chairman of travel agency federation ACAVE, Martí Sarrate. “Tourism provides 10 percent of Spain's GDP and 13 percent of jobs in the country. People are now afraid that the market will shift to other destinations and away from Spain, like what happened in Turkey and Egypt.” But he concludes with a more optimistic outlook: “Spain as a brand name is plenty strong enough and, however many people stage boycotts, these will always be fleeting, reactionary and temporary.” However, Sarrate is more concerned about today's mass strikes across Catalunya, which have affected the airports and road and rail transport. Fortunately, the shutdown is only for one day and the region was operating as normal by mid-week. Sarrate is quick to point out that outside of Catalunya, no major strikes are imminent and no other transport or services are affected. Meanwhile, a petition by human rights activist group Avaaz, calling for Spain's president Mariano Rajoy to resign over the police violence, has netted nearly 350,000 signatures in two days.

Royal British Legion ‘In the Brass’ The RBL were in the brass last Friday evening, Just Brass in fact, with the assistance of JB Brass Band, under the direction of Jayne Illingworth.

Over 300 people attended the outdoor concert, billed as the ‘Best of Brass’ which was held in the beautiful outdoor setting of the Olympia Restaurant in Mil Palmeras for what was an evening of music, flamenco and fun, the primary aim of which was to raise funds for The Royal British Legion. The event was hosted by the President of the Orihuela Costa and District Branch, Pastor Keith Brown although for the two JB Brass Band segments he handed over to band compere Ian Gibson who, with his own brand of humour, guided the audience through the sessions of military marches, traditional British and Spanish standards, as well as

music from the classics, theatre and films. While the band took a welldeserved break the Francisca Samper Flamenco Troupe took to the stage with their own very emotional style of dance. As the ladies expressed their emotions in a wonderful test of stamina, most of the troupe being of advancing years, they provided us all with a masterful taste of Spain. As we watched the ladies perform their routine there was absolutely no need to speak the language to get drawn into their captivating performances — or set your toes tapping. Such a pity that Francisca was unable to dance herself but nevertheless a wonderful performance by her troupe. "Flamenco, Flamenco." The event itself raised almost 1800 euros for the Royal British Legion thanks to the hard work of

many Branch members and it is certainly an evening that must be repeated in the future. The combination of the two, JB Just Brass and the Flamenco troupe was pure entertainment. A magnificent evening of brass and flamenco with music to stir every soul. And a remark made to me by one audience member summarised the feelings, as she said: ‘An enjoyable evening packed full of entertainment; I hope to see Just Brass performing here again in the future!’ JB Just Brass include in their ranks players from many of the top UK brass bands, including Black Dyke and Fodens, with two

players from Brighouse and Rastrick and Faireys Brass bands travelling out from England just for the night.

Four signs a buyer isn’t serious about your home Rebecca Serwotka

Everyone loves to see an excited home buyer walk through their door. They love to hear the ooh’s and ahh’s as the buyer takes their time, and walks through their home. Hearing the buyer say “this is exactly what we’re looking for,” and “this is the house for me, I can feel it!” as they excitedly hold their chest, would make any home seller think they’ve found the perfect buyer for their home. But, as everything in life, it’s not what people say, it’s what they do that really matters. It’s hard not to get your hopes up, as a home seller, when you hear such comments, but when the buyer doesn’t follow through and disappears into the night, it leaves you with a feeling of disappointment and thoughts of “did we say something wrong?” Here are 4 signs that a buyer isn’t serious about your home: 1. The buyer is flying solo: If only one half of the couple is out on the viewing appointment, and their other half is not with them. This is usually a sign of lack of interest in the home. 98% Of the time, the buyer cannot and will not make a decision alone, without their partner viewing the property with them. 2. A speedy visit: Time is everything, and when a buyer is quicker than Speedy Gonzalez, this is the biggest telltale sign that they have no interest in your home whatsoever. When

Locals raise funds for MacMillan The MacMillan coffee morning is the largest event held by the anti-cancer charity, and is supported all over the world. The money is used to support people facing cancer and people are asked to host their own Coffee Mornings with donations on the day made to Macmillan. For several years local lady Juanita Betts has opened her garden to friends and family and hosted a coffee morning. However, the event grew so popular that last year Juanita and husband John decided to hold the event in the evening and at Crystals Restaurant. This year more than 60 people attended the event on Friday, the official MacMillan Coffee Morning date, and raised 1,300 euros. This takes the total amount Juanita has raised for the charity to more than 7,000 euros in total. Entertainment on the

evening was provided by Greg Bannis, former lead singer with the group Hot Chocolate, who

flew in specially for the event, and thrilled the guests with his amazing vocals. Raffle prizes were provided by generous local businesses and the ticket sales helped boost the total raised. Juanita said: “We would like

to say a big thank you to all the local businesses which made generous donations, to Greg Bannis for fantastic entertainment, to everyone at Crystals and last but not least everyone who attended the event.” The first ever Coffee Morning happened way back in 1990. It was a rather small affair with a simple idea: guests would gather over coffee and donate the cost of their cuppa to Macmillan in the process. It was so effective the charity ran it again the next year – only this time nationally. Since then, Coffee Morning has raised over £165.5 million for Macmillan. Last year the MacMillan Coffee morning raised raised £29.5 million and this year organisers were aiming to raise even more. Well done to everyone who had a coffee morning or event in aid of this very deserving cause. Mireille Toddington

they make you feel like you have to push them inside the rooms, to make them look around, means you are losing the battle from the start. Body language is everything, and although the buyer may think they are being polite because they aren’t saying much, their body language is speaking volumes of what they really think. 3. A cheeky offer: Everyone wants a bargain – BUT, if the buyer is offering an unreasonably low amount, this is a sure sign that they don’t really want the house. Serious buyers make their best offers, because they don’t want to lose the house. When buyers know their low offer was refused, this gives them an excuse to walk away without any shame. 4. Lots of nitpicking: When a buyer says in one breath, “you have a wonderful home,” then in the next “but there are lots of things that need changing” this means they are trying to find as much fault with your home as possible. If someone was genuinely interested in your home, they would see past any minor issues, but when they come along with their long list of “things in the home that need attention” means they are obsessed with finding fault, and more importantly provides them with an easy exit. Remember, if your buyers are taking their time to have a good look around, they are trying to imagine themselves living there! Slow and steady, wins the race! similar to a Kodak print and if this happens when you are doing a reading for someone, relay what you are being given – you may be pleasantly surprised with the feedback you are given.

DIFFERENT FORMS OF PSYCHIC ABILITY FEELING/SENSING/HEARING/SEEING There is a name for this that I want you to take note of: - ‘divine timing’ – which means that you will learn your guide’s name if or when you're Guide is ready to share their name with you. The main thing is that you acknowledge they are there, whether you can see or hear them or not. They will develop you at a pace that is right for you. Always remember that, and never ever, try to compare yourself with anyone else. This is your own personal journey – don’t let worrying about anyone else spoil that. Each psychic is different, and may find that as they develop, one of their senses is more heightened than the others. Once you have completed your training and you have highly developed psychic powers you will be able to use a few, if not all, of the following:

Psychic ability is being able to use all our senses in a natural way without analysing what’s happening. For example, in a meditation you may ‘feel’ someone round you but you don’t ‘see’ them. Or you may ‘hear’ someone call your name but you worry because you don’t know if it’s your spirit guide or not and if it is, you are concerned because you don’t know their name!

Don’t laugh, but this is the question I get asked the most “Why don’t I know my Guide’s name?” My answer to that question is don’t worry about it! The more you hone in on one particular thing, the more you will miss the other wonderful things that are going on around you such as the signs that your Spirit Guide is giving you to make you sit up and notice.

CLAIRVOYANT - SEEING A clairvoyant means someone who can ‘see clearly’ through visions and impressions from the ‘brow chakra’ also known as The Third eye which stands for intuition, understanding and mysticism Once your third eye has been developed your psychic vibrations will be raised and you will learn how to use the third eye to interpret messages you are given in meditations or during a clairvoyant reading. You may see pictures forming with your third eye that look

CLAIRAUDIENCE – HEARING If you are clairaudient it means that you will be able to hear messages from your Spirit Guide or the spirit world in general through the ears or telepathy. Clairsentience – Sensing/Feeling Clairsentience means being able to sense if spirit are around you as well as being able to pick up emotions from people, objects, or places. CHANNELLING Channelling is a word that describes anyone who is able to receive messages from higher guidance INTUITION Everyone has intuition but some people have a stronger intuition or ‘gut feeling’ than others. As an intuitive you will be able to receive information from spirit through a highly developed intuition. TELEPATHY Telepathy is transmitted information from one mind to another. It is a way that Mediums can communicate with their spirit guides and the spirit world in general as no words are spoken. Telepathy is a natural form of communication – you only have to look at animals how they sense and know something is about to happen which is often hard for humans to perceive. Telepathy works on a different vibration beyond our natural senses or physical interaction. PSYCHIC A psychic is someone who receives information from spirit using all their heightened senses and highly

developed powers. PSYCHIC DETECTIVE A psychic detective is someone who helps Police to find missing persons in unsolved crimes by following the clues obtained via their own psychic antennae or through communication with dead missing people. MEDIUM A Medium is someone who can utilise all or most of the above senses and abilities and can communicate with spirit who have passed over to the next world, often giving messages comfort and guidance to their loved ones on the earth plane. RESCUE MEDIUM A Rescue Medium like me is someone who can use all heightened senses which they need to communicate with spirits who have, for whatever reason, resisted going to the light at the point of death. They are usually called in by families whose homes are haunted by spirit(s) who are causing mayhem via unexplained activity/phenomena. A Rescue Mediums needs all their wits about them in order to tell the story of the spirit who is stuck between two worlds as well as ‘persuade’ the spirit to walk towards the light to their loved ones on the other side.

ING’s agreement with Banco Popular for the former’s customers to use the latter’s cashpoints commission-free remains in place, despite Popular having been bought out by Banco Santander. This may change in the future, but chief executive for ING Spain and Portugal, César González-Bueno, says ‘there are contingencies’ prepared in case the deal falls through when Santander gets its feet under Banco Popular’s table. The company which manages the network of Banco Popular cashpoints, Euro Automatic Cash (EAC), is 50 per cent owned by Popular and 50 per cent by the French bank Crédit Mutuel. recognised that Vera Town Hall denied the compensation for damages and prejudice suffered as a consequence of the demolition of their home, given the building licence had been declared null. Later, the Administrative Contentious Court 3 in Almeria considered patrimony had been lost and fixed the compensation amount at 425,183.43 euros. The high court in Andalucía considered the patrimony responsibility was founded by the decision of the local administration which had granted the couple a building licence which was illegal. The TSJA considered net costs, considered as 377,064.98 euros, which includes the value of the land (156,720 euros) the cost of construction and indirect costs (220,344.98 euros). The tribunal declared that the amount of 220,344.98 euros ‘was most adjusted to the reality, because it does not include the land and is more adjusted to the insurance granted for damage to the building concerted to be true.’

British couple who lost their home have compensation reduced The Superior Justice Tribunal of Andalucía has added insult to injury to a couple who saw their home demolished and have been living in a garage – and have now had the compensation originally awarded to them slashed. The original compensation of 425,183.43 euros was granted by the Administrative Contentious Court 3 in Almeria who ordered Vera Town Hall to pay the sum to the British couple, Mr and Mrs Prior, who saw their home demolished in January 2008. However, the higher court has partially accepted a procedural appeal presented by the Vera Town Hall and has removed the concept of moral damage and prejudice and granted the costs only of material damage. Previously, the first instance court had partially estimated the administrative contentious appeal, formed by the Priors against the Vera Town Hall calling for a payment for patrimony responsibility, realised by the couple. BUSINESS PROFILE

Record leads at UK property expo

A record number of leads were generated by Vincent Real Estate this last weekend at the A Place in the Sun Live property exhibition held at the NEC Birmingham in the UK. “It just goes to show that people are not affected by Brexit and still want their dream home in the sun whatever the outcome may be,” quoted Mark Vincent. It was also very interesting to see that so many people were not there just browsing or enquiring about a smaller holiday home but actually looking for that larger property to up sticks and make that permanent move to the sun ... Vincent Real Estate was on hand throughout the three days to offer expert advice, show properties and to make the whole process stress free. However the hard work really begins for the team now back in Spain processing the enquiries and arranging trips and viewings in the hope of finding that perfect

property for each and every client committed to Vincent Real Estate. Mark, Stewart, Frank, Mannie, John and Jose (M & S Interealty legal firm) although exhausted are happy to be back home and are more than happy with the incredible interest generated at the show. Global property insight Global property markets are booming and clued up investors are facing a plethora of new opportunities. These are two of the key messages to come out of the latest Property Frontiers Global Market Roundup. The quarterly guide reveals insights into markets around the world, giving investors the data they need to know where to look next. Ray Withers, CEO, Property Frontiers said: “Global property markets are constantly shifting and keeping up with an entire planet’s worth of opportunities is no easy task. That’s why we’re constantly researching and reviewing data, to identify emerging trends and seek out the most promising areas for investment, no matter which country they may be in.” The Q3 2017 Global Market Roundup reports that the UK remains an attractive destination for property investors, with annual house price growth picking up to 5.1 per cent in July. London’s residential market continues to decline though, with buy-to-let mortgage numbers half of what they were a year ago and just 37 per cent of listings ending in a sale. Elsewhere in Europe, Vienna, Zurich, Madrid, Berlin and Amsterdam are all attracting significant capital when it comes to residential real estate investment. With European regulators currently considering loosening solvency restrictions on real estate investments by the insurance industry, that capital flow could double to as much as €500bn in the near future. At the very top of the list in Europe is Iceland. In fact, Iceland is currently the most profitable residential market in the world, with growth of 23.2 per cent in the year to June. Over in the Asia-Pacific region, investment opportunities are equally interesting. The Philippines enjoyed economic expansion of

Iceland is currently the most profitable residential market in the world, with growth of 23.2 per cent in the year to June. 6.8 per cent last year and a reworking of property taxes may well be on the horizon, making this a country to watch very carefully. Meanwhile, residential investment levels in China are falling, as regulators introduce a raft of measures to stabilise runaway prices. South Korea is also falling from favour, with investors instead opting for Hong Kong and India. The former reported the highest house price growth in Asia in the year to June, at 21.1 per cent according to Knight Frank. The latter is enjoying fiveyear price appreciation of a staggering 69.7 per cent. The Americas present an equally mixed picture. Canadian cities are falling from grace, with talk of the bubble deflating, if not bursting entirely. Foreign investors are flocking to the US instead, purchasing 49 per cent more residential property by value this year than last, based on figures from the National Association of Realtors. Latin America is also holding its own, with Argentina and Brazil both looking promising once more. Finally, the Middle East and Africa is looking extremely interesting and in Nigeria, the current housing shortage of 18 million units is widening every year, with urbanisation drawing an estimated 40,000 people per day to the country’s cities. The UN World Tourism Organisation reports that North Africa was the fastest growing sub-region in the world in Q1 2017, with an increase of 17.8 per cent in visitor numbers. Meanwhile, business confidence in the global hospitality industry has reached its highest level in a decade, opening up a plethora of new investment opportunities to those who like to stay ahead of the curve.

King Felipe without referring directly to Catalan Premier Carles Puigdemont or the speaker of the Catalan regional parliament Carme Forcadell by name. The monarch also included a special message for Catalans: “I wish to reiterate that we have been living for several decades already in a democratic State, that provides constitutional ways for anyone to defend their ideas within the law,” he said. “These are troubled times, but we will overcome them,” said, ending his message on a positive note. But he warned that “without respect for the law, there is no possible democratic coexistence in peace and freedom, neither in Catalonia, nor in the rest of Spain, nor anywhere in the world.” King Felipe’s speech came on the evening of a day in which thousands of Catalans marched on the streets to protest National Police and Civil Guard action during Sunday’s illegal referendum in the region after almost 850 people ended up needing medical attention as ugly scenes played out – scenes that were

Catalan turmoil

Following the recent tumultuous referendum, Spain’s King Felipe VI spoke to the nation on the issue of the Catalan crisis. In his message, broadcast on national television, he made a firm defence of the Spanish Constitution in the face of the separatist challenge in Catalonia – what he described as an extremely serious situation. Speaking in a grave tone and dressed in a black suit, King Felipe said that “certain Catalan authorities have repeatedly, consciously and deliberately flouted the Constitution and their own Statute of Autonomy (Estatut) which is the law that acknowledges, protects and safeguards their historic institutions and their selfgovernment.” In his speech, the monarch accused the Catalan government and parliament of “irresponsible behavior” that threatened to jeopardise the social and economic stability of Catalonia and Spain. “These authorities have unequivocally and categorically placed themselves outside the law and outside democracy,” said

beamed around the world – between the authorities and members of the public. Data from Sunday’s poll shows around 90% of voters cast their ballots in favour of independence. However, participation was just 2,262,424 of a total voter pool of 5,343,358, for a turnout rate of 42 per cent, according to the Catalan government’s own figures. The abstention rate was 58 per cent. Meanwhile, a flash, region-wide strike over the police violence seen on Sunday in an attempt to stop Catalunya’s independence referendum affected everything from football teams through to transport, schools and healthcare. El Prat airport was said to be running as normal as at 09.45 on the chosen day, and although the regional education authority had given schools permission to strike as they wished, minimum services continued in infants and primary, and high schools and FE colleges will had at least one official on duty. Even the Cistercian monks at the Poblet Monastery joined the strike, but agreed to let visitors in pre-booked groups continue with their tours, albeit behind locked doors. Tarragona stopped its bus service for

the day, and the city council – run by the socialists - complained of picket lines with people hurling stones at buses and covering them with graffiti. More pickets blocked the T-11 ReusTarragona motorway, even burning tyres on the carriageway. Major chemical plants were working on minimum services only and industrial estates, shops, and even farms shut down for the day. Protests took place in the ports of Barcelona, Palamós, Vilanova i la Geltrú and Sant Carles de la Ràpita as dock workers completely downed tools. Resignation Councillor for the right-wing PP – the same party as Spanish president Mariano Rajoy – in Palamós (Girona province), Vanessa Mányik, quit in disgust and deep disapproval at the way the government has acted over the referendum and what she describes as brutality on the part of the police. The Catalunya National Art Museum, Barcelona’s Contemporary Art Museum, the city auditorium, the Music Museum, the Lycée music academy, the Palau de la Música opera house and the Catalunya National Theatre all announced that their

programmed performances for the day hadbeen called off and their doors are shut. Demonstrators blocked the A-2 motorway between Bellpuig and Tàrrega, in the land-locked Pyrénéen province of Lleida, and university students have not gone to class. The regional government has told public-sector workers that if they wish to strike, they would still get paid – normally, although every worker in Spain has the right to join industrial action, they lose their salary for the days they strike. Private health clinics and hospitals shut, and the public health service joined in the shut-down. Emergencies, operations, cancer treatment, kidney dialysis, childbirth, newborn care, intensive care, transplants, surgery and treatment for heart conditions, and oxygen therapy including home life support were all guaranteed, but non-urgent or non-crucial appointments have had to be rebooked. Barcelona-El Prat, Reus, Girona-Costa Brava and Sabadell airports were required to provide minimum services ranging from 23 per cent to 56 per cent. Spain’s government said the strike was ‘not valid’ because it has not been convened in accordance with set procedures by unions.

RESERVE YOUR PLACE FOR WHITE CHRISTMAS It’s only October but rehearsals are already well underway for Studio 32’s performance of White Christmas. The show contains many classic songs such as Blue Skies, Sisters and, of course, White Christmas. One of the main characters in this winter production is Martha Watson, played by Bev McEwan. Martha is an ex-professional singer who is the concierge at General Waverly’s hotel in Vermont. She wants to perform again and sings as a solo Let Me Sing And I’m Happy! It’s not an easy role to play but Bev has lots of experience behind her, having already played Ado Annie in Oklahoma, Mrs Fezziwig in A Christmas Caroland most recently, Mabel Normand in Mack and Mabel.

The municipality of Orihuela was filled with tourists recently as people joined in the activities planned and organised by the Department for Tourism of the city to celebrate World Tourism Day. This year’s event was launched under the slogan “Sustainable tourism for development” and more than a thousand tourists and local residents participated in the activities. In addition, there was a golf tournament held on the Saturday afternoon and a flamenco performance in the evening. Both held on the coast. On Sunday, also on the coast was a route for Nordic Walking. The Councillor for Tourism, Sofia Álvarez thanked those who took part in any of the activities. She explained that in addition to attracting tourists, these events had be specifically aimed at local residents. She said: “The aim of the initiative was for locals to be a tourist in their own city.”

Brits left stranded by the demise of Monarch Airlines have been locked out of their hotel rooms and threatened with arrest over the airline’s unpaid bills. The UK airline has left 110,000 Brits stuck abroad with emergency flights being chartered by the government to bring them home. Stranded tourists say they have been confronted by hotel bosses in Spain who threatened to throw them out unless they pay Monarch’s outstanding bills. Roland De Gouveia, from Reading in the UK, claims his group of 17 holidaymakers staying at the Hotel Beatriz Costa & Spa in Lanzarote have been ordered to pay around £9,000 or they would be locked out of their rooms. He told the press: “It’s been getting pretty heated. We were told by the hotel that they are owed £9,000 and we will be out if we can’t pay. “They even threatened to lock the doors and keep our stuff, which as you can imagine we weren’t having any of. Now we’re keeping our passports on us in case they throw us out. The hotel say Monarch don’t pay them until 90 days after the stay and they won’t be getting any money. “People have been very angry and we’ve had to threaten to call the Guardia Civil if they take any of our stuff. I’ve called the Civil Aviation Authority who have said

‘enjoy your holiday, we’ll speak to the hotel’ but no-one seems to have heard from them since.” Another tourist claimed he had been ordered to pay £3,000 by a Benidorm hotel after being locked out of his room. He said: “We were told we were no longer staying at the hotel until we paid the bill for the two rooms in full. Eventually we were let back in overnight but told in no uncertain terms the bill is still outstanding. We have been told two other Monarch customers have paid the money but I’ve said I won’t be paying. “We are supposed to be leaving tomorrow but the stress has completely ruined our holiday. We have no idea what’s going to happen in the coming days.” Monarch, Britain’s fifth biggest airline, is headquartered in Luton and has been in operation since 1986. There were 34,589 Monarch passengers stranded in Spain when the tour company went into administration. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said it will cover the cost of those asked to pay again by their hotel and that holidaymakers should keep receipts. It added that tourists will have to claim from their insurer if they book to stay at a hotel longer due to their flight being rearranged.

Spain’s cheapest supermarkets Filling your shopping cart with similar products in your city’s cheapest supermarket or in the most expensive one can have major repercussions for your wallet. In Madrid, for example, the gap between the costliest and the cheapest establishments can equal €3,013 a year in savings, €14 more than last year. The capital is among the Spanish cities with the largest price differences, according to a report by the Organisation for Consumers and Users (OCU). On average, the report shows that in Spain the disparity between the cheapest and most expensive grocery chains is an average €909 a year on similar purchases. In Alcobendas, a municipality outside Madrid, you can spend up to €7,329 per year shopping at the most expensive grocery store. On the other hand, buying at the most economical chain in the same town could save the family budget €2,850. In the Basque city of San Sebastián, the gap between the most expensive and the cheapest option is €1,502. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, €1,410 can be saved depending on where you choose to shop. After Madrid, these are the cities with the most significant price differences, according to the OCU study. Granada, in Andalusia, is where filling the shopping cart is the least expensive, at about €4,051 per year, according to the same study. The organisation analysed more than 164,000 prices at 1,137 establishments for 233 different products. Among them are 52 fresh foods (meat, fish, fruit and vegetables); 98 packaged food, drug and hygiene products selected among the leading market brands; and 83 cheap commodities, usually generic brands.

The report shows that the average savings a consumer can get from switching from an expensive supermarket to a cheaper one is €909. This figure is 2.5 percent lower than last year, reflecting a reduction in the gap between grocery store prices. The average household spends €4,773 annually at supermarkets, making it possible to save 19 percent overall. If the internet were a city, it would be in third place for possible savings after making the switch to a cheaper online supermarket, with net savings of €1,518 compared to the most expensive option.

In the big cities and their peripheries, and in the Canary Islands’ capitals, having more options leads to larger savings. In contrast, in Segovia, Ciudad Real, (both in central Spain) and Pontevedra (in Galicia), the difference is more modest: €266, €344, and €343, respectively. The report found that the cheapest establishment in Spain is Dani supermarket on Melchor Almagro street in Granada. The Alcampo store in Vigo, which was the cheapest last year, is now in second place, tied with three other Dani supermarkets also in Granada. The most expensive stores on the list are the

three Sánchez Romero supermarkets in Madrid, followed by Sorli Discau in Barcelona. On the podium for the cheapest national chains are Alcampo, Mercadona, Carrefour, Simply Market, Maxi Dia, Dia Market, Carrefour Market, Lidl, Eroski, and Dia Plaza. The most expensive national chains are El Corte Inglés, followed by Supercor, and Carrefour Express, among others. According to the OCU, “Mercadona is the cheapest option in half of the cities that were studied, but if there is an Alcampo in the city, Alcampo is usually the most economical choice.” Lidl is the chain that has most increased its prices, by 4.3 percent. Maxi Dia increased them by 1.8 percent and Alimerka by 1.6 percent. The chains that have gotten less expensive are BM Urban at 3.2 percent, Lupa at 2.9 percent, and Más y Más at 2.3 percent. The hypermarkets, or superstores combining food and other retail products, are the commercial format where it is cheaper to fill the OCU basket, according

to the report. “Unlike previous years, hypermarkets are also the cheapest for generic brand goods, since the discount chains – such as Lidl, Dia, or Aldi – are changing their image to get closer to traditional supermarkets.” Fresh Foods The average cost of the OCU basket has only increased 0.1 percent overall since last year. However, fresh products have been hit by the largest increases in almost all the chains: 5.3 percent at Lidl, 5.2 percent at Alimerka, and 4.3 percent at Consum, followed by 18 other chains. Prices have only gone down in Día Plaza, Urban BM, Simply Market, Supersol, Erosky, and Lupa. Rising prices of fresh goods have been offset, according to the OCU, by a decrease in generic brand prices. As a whole, shoppers will spend the most in Barcelona, Teruel, and Palma de Mallorca and the least in Almería and Puertollano. Regionally, La Rioja and Galicia are the cheapest and Catalonia and the Balearic Islands the most expensive.

2,500 Calendars – all for a good cause On a beautiful October day many people gathered to see the launch of the 2017 Costa Blanca Solidarity Calendar. In the grounds of Aroca Sequier Abogados gathered many representatives from local English-speaking charities ready to pick up their bundle of calendars to sell. The idea is simple. Put together a comprehensive and attractive calendar aimed at the English-speaking market and donate it free to charities. Let them sell it to raise money for their individual causes. This is an excellent way of both providing something useful and raising money where it’s needed. This year over 30 different charity groups and associations will benefit from the publication of the 13th calendar. Altogether around 2,500 copies have been printed and these will find their way to different outlets across the Costa Blanca.

The calendar is an attractive display of twelve beautiful and spectacular scenes across the region. The pictures come thanks to photographers Phil Fryer, Antonio Garcia, Joaquin Carrion, Nicholas Garcia, Carlos Garcia and John Rook and aim to portray not only the coastal scenes that most of us are familiar with but more inland tourist destinations too. The calendar is a collection of information as well as being attractive. It includes useful telephone numbers, what’s on in each of the months, different places to visit and things to do. It’s meant to be a notebook too with space for people to make their own individual jottings on each page. The graphics and printing of the calendar are paid for by six companies: Aroca Sequier Abogados, Alamo Costa Blanca, Cambridge Currency, MAPFRE Brithol Insurance, Atlas Seguros brokers

André prepares the ham for the participants

and Currency Direct. The event on Thursday 5th October wasn’t only opportunity to launch the new calendars but also to celebrate the donation of money to four Costa Blanca causes. A huge total of €20,600 had been raised and was divided between the charities of: • ALPE – Asociación Comarcal para la Rehabilitación del Discapacitado • Stroke Support • HELP Vega Baja • San José Orfanato Representatives were there on the day to collect the checks from Miguel Angel Aroca who also expressed his thanks and pleasure in this annual project. Set to benefit from the sale of calendars this year are many well-known charities including Rock Against Cancer, the Samaritans, Stroke Support, AFE Cancer, Elche Children’s Home, Help at Home, Reach Out and Age Concern. The idea behind the calendar is that of Andy Ormiston who addressed those attending and described month by month what they could expect to find in this new edition. It’s startling to see the difference between this year’s calendar

and the version produced when it was first started. The project has gone from strength to strength. Lyn and Ken Adams were two of those participating in the event. They were there to collect their calendars for the coming year in support of the San José orphanage. During the past couple of months they have been actively campaigning along with Julie at Carmens Bar; initially providing materials for the start of the new school year and now Christmas presents for the children there. If you would like your copy of the 2018 calendar then they will be on sale for €5 at Carmens Bar along with tickets for their carvery raffle. Every week raffle tickets are being sold with the prize of a meal for two. Proceeds are going towards the resources needed at the San José children’s home in Orihuela. There is also ‘name the teddy’ to win a large teddy bear donated by Jo Merry. Most of those taking part on Thursday were there with a cause in mind. They will have taken with them an opportunity to raise money for something dear to their hearts. Suzanne O’Connell

Sober for October Gary from Carpet Heaven is going ‘Sober for October’ in aid of the AECC. Anyone who knows Gary knows that giving up for two days would be a challenge – let alone 31 days! But yes, he is determined to do it. If any of his old customers, friends or contacts would like to sponsor him, Gary would very much appreciate your support. Gary is also pledging that all the money he saves by staying off alcohol for the month of October, he will put aside and donate alongside any sponsorship money he gathers. All of which will be donated to the AECC Cancer charity in early November. If you would like to show your support and sponsor Gary, please send an email to carpetheaven@hotmail.es, call Gary directly on 966720782 or pop in to the Carpet Heaven showroom in Los Montesinos on the main street. Amazon under fire for ‘anorexia’ hoodie Online retailer Amazon has been branded ‘irresponsible’ for selling a hoodie that describes anorexia as "like bulimia, except with self control". Dr Susie Orbach, a psychotherapist and expert on anorexia, described the hoodie as "a way to make people feel really awful" when they were "already anguished enough".

"This is terribly irresponsible on Amazon's part," she said. "We're breeding a culture [where people think] you should transform your body, you should comment on it, and if it isn't the way you want it to be it's got to be some other way." Dr Orbach called for Amazon to "remove it immediately". "They really don't need to be making money this way," she added. Amazon declined to offer a statement,

but a spokesman said the hoodie was not available to buy from the company's UK website. Anorexia sufferer Beth Grant said this would make little difference to those with anorexia or bulimia. "You can still see it on the internet," she said. "It can still harm them, even if they're not wearing it. "I think they should issue a statement saying it is 'so sorry it's on our website'."

Skipping breakfast may double risk of hard arteries People who skip breakfast or eat poorly to start the day are twice as likely to develop hardened arteries, which can lead to deadly heart disease, researchers have said. The study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology uncovered signs of damage to the arteries long before symptoms or disease developed. Researchers said their findings could offer an important

tool in the fight against cardiovascular disease, the world's top killer, which took 17.7 million lives in 2015, according to the World Health Organisation. “People who regularly skip breakfast likely have an overall unhealthy lifestyle," said study author Valentin Fuster, director of Mount Sinai Heart and editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

“This study provides evidence that this is one bad habit people can proactively change to reduce their risk for heart disease." The report was based on 4,000 middleaged office workers in Spain. Participants were followed for six years. About one in four ate a high-energy breakfast, which included 20 percent or more of the day's calories. Most people in the study - 70 percent - ate a low-

energy breakfast that gave them five to 20 percent of their daily calorie intake. Three percent said they skipped breakfast altogether or ate very little. This group "tended to have more generally unhealthy eating habits and a higher prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors," said the report. People who skipped breakfast also "had the greatest waist circumference, body mass index, blood pressure, blood

lipids and fasting glucose levels," it said. Researchers used ultrasound technology to scan participants for signs of fatty deposits in the arteries, or early evidence of disease. They found that people who ate less than five percent of their recommended daily calories at breakfast had, on average, double the amount of fatty build-up in the arteries as people who ate a highenergy breakfast. This heightened risk of hardened arteries among people who skipped breakfast or ate little to start the day appeared independently of other factors, such as smoking, high cholesterol and physical inactivity. Previous studies have shown that eating a healthy breakfast is linked to good health, including a lower body weight, healthy diet, and lower risk of problems with cholesterol, blood pressure and diabetes. Skipping breakfast has also previously been shown to raise the risk of coronary artery disease. According to Prakash Deedwania, professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco and author of an accompanying editorial in the journal, the study offers more evidence that skipping breakfast can be harmful to one's health. "Although breakfast skippers are generally attempting to lose weight, they often end up eating more and unhealthy foods later in the day. Skipping breakfast can cause hormonal imbalances and alter circadian rhythms," said Deedwania. "That breakfast is the most important meal of the day has been proven right in light of this evidence."

Peter via email asks: Hello Aunty. My iPad now wishes me to authorise it with original Apple ID password but I cannot remember it as I have changed it several times. Can you help? Aunty Says: Hi Peter. Hopefully all is not lost but you will need access to the email account that you used when you originally set up your Apple account. Go to this website appleid.apple.com and click on the “forgot apple id” link at the bottom. You will need to enter your email address and type in the characters as a security measure. This should email you a link and reset code that you simply enter to reset your password. Mary via email asks: Hi Aunty, I have an HP laptop with Windows 10 and I have an unlimited 4G dongle to access the Internet because we have such poor coverage with WIFI in our area. Windows will not do any updates automatically as says my internet is “metered” even though it is not, but I can’t see an option where I can do it manually. I searched Google and came across hundreds of websites that were far more helpfull than the Microsoft Windows help but they kept telling me to click on setting options that I do not seem to have (such as Control Panel) with pictures of an update panel with a button for a manual click but I don’t seem to have this either. Am I missing something?

Technology

Aunty Says: Hello Mary. There is a manual update option in Windows 10 and is essential if you want to force any updates and have more control as to when the heavy updates kick in. Click on the start icon and got to “Settings” “Update and Security” “Windows Updates” and here you have control over how and when updates are managed. There have been some huge new Windows 10 updates recently and some of the earlier Windows 10 options have moved and changes so it’s likely you still have some of the original layout. Of

course it’s possible that Google or Microsoft haven’t updated the help pages you have been reading so maybe check the dates of the links you are clicking on.

Bill via email asks: Hi Aunty. With my old computer whenever I printed anything a window popped up telling me how much ink I had left. This does not happen with my new one which is surprising as I though Windows 10 was meant to be an improvement. Any ideas how to fix this? The laptop is a Lenovo and the printer is an HP. Aunty Says: Hi Bill. This is probably due to the printer software (known as drivers) not being the full set. When you first plug a printer into a new Windows 10 computer it will look through its own list of drivers and install what it thinks is the best one, and although these nearly always work, they are usually only the basics to get you going & don’t include the additional functions such as scanning and ink level alerts. You need to go to the printer manafacturer’s website (Google it) and navigate to the support/download section. Type your printer model into the search box and look for the full software package for your printer. Once downloaded and installed you should see all of the features you enjoyed with your old system. Any questions you can email me at auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com See you all next week.

What do I need to know about Spanish tyre law?

S

panish law requires that your vehicle is fitted with the correct type and size of tyre for the vehicle type you are driving and for the purpose it is being used. This means fitting the right tyres and for safety ensuring that they are inflated to the manufacturer's recommended pressure. The legal limit for minimum depth of the tread on your tyres is 1.6 millimetres, across the central ¾ of the tread around the complete circumference of the tyre. You can measure the wear on a tyre by looking at the “principal

grooves”, built-in thread depth testers that form part of the tyre´s mould. Principal grooves are the wide grooves in the tyre tread which have the tread-depth indicators located inside them. If you look in these grooves, you will see parts of the tread which are clearly different from the rest, a lot lower than the original tyre depth. This is the tread depth indicator. It is also important to check for uneven wear and tear around the tyres, including using your hands to feel around the hidden side, checking for obvious problems and damage.

For safety reasons it is recommended that you replace your tyres before the legal limit is reached. Many vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing at 3 millimetres. At 1.6 millimetres in wet weather it takes an extra two car lengths (8 metres) to stop at 50 mph than if your tread was 3 millimetres. Not only are regular checks of your tyres (including the spare) crucial for ensuring the safety of the vehicle and occupants, they can help you to avoid a 200 euro fine, for each wheel, where tyres found to be beyond the legal limit of wear are found. San Miguel Golf Society at La Roda Orihuela Cancer run La Roda is not the easiest course in the world to play. The stretch from hole 2 to 5 is quite possibly one of the most difficult prolonged segments of any track that the society plays. Forty members and 8 guests took it on on a day that was made for golf, with fairly calm conditions, sunshine, and a course in quite good condition, save for the overly wet areas around sprinkler heads on the front nine. Whilst both Gold and Silver categories scored well, Bronze category returns were generally quite poor, apart from that of Keith Wraithmell who stepped out (partially) from the crowd. Perhaps those with higher handicaps overly enjoyed last Friday’s Captain’s dinner and had yet to recover!! This season’s new Captain Tony Smale presented the prizes, the stand out scorers

receiving them, Andy Imrie, Peter Girenas and Noel Bannon, all beating their handicaps. A special mention too for Paul Kelsall who recorded nearest the pins on 2 holes, one 6 inches away, the second a mere 2 feet. Well played Paul. The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th Keith Stevenson (26 on CB), 4th Norman Padmore (26 on CB), 3rd Chris Hamblett (28), 2nd Phil Birtwistle (29), and 1st Keith Wraithmell with 33 points. Silver Category: 5th Mike Iddles (33 on CB), 4th Colin Rust (33 on CB), 3rd Phil de Lacy (35), 2nd Paul Kelsall (36), and 1st Peter Girenas with 38 points Gold Category: 5th Stuart Grayson

(32 on CB), 4th Keven Mitchell (33 on CB), 3rd Barry Roehrig (33 on CB), 2nd Noel Bannon (37), and 1st Andy Imrie with 39 points. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Eva Pettersson (hole 2), Paul Kelsall (7 and 13)) and Peter Cahill (11). The Abacus was won by Mary Cleary The Best Guest prize went to Peter Cahill (35) Our thanks go to the staff at La Roda golf course for their contribution to an enjoyable day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Captain Tony Smale a call on 628227687 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf get-togethers. Next week we willbe at Saurines Torres.

The first walk and race against breast cancer in Orihuela will take place on 22nd October, and id called "Run for me, Orihuela". The Councillor for Citizen Participation, Sabina Galindo, along with Irene Cerdán, president of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) in Orihuela, and Hassan Ouharrouch, president of Club Oriol Athletic, presented the details for the first anti-cancer event to take place in the city at a recent launch. The event will take place at 10:30am, with the start line at the Glorieta de Gabriel Miró. The councillor invited all citizens to participate in this activity "for the important work that this association does and what it represents for society," highlighting the support for the cause by the Government Team, and especially the Department of Sports, directed by Víctor Valverde, which has also palyed a key role in the organisation of the race. This sports activity aims, as explained by the president of the AECC, "aims to fundraise for breast

cancer research", by which the full collection of the 10 euro registration fee for the race will go fully towards this purpose. As far as the technical part is concerned, the march will have a flat and unbroken course through the urban centre of the city of Orihuela. There will be a march of 3.5 kilometres and races with set distances of 3, 5 and 7 kilometres respectively. Those who wish to register can do so until the 18th October through the form of the website www.asuspuestos.com or the same day of the race until half an hour before departure. Mireille Toddington

Trophies shared around in Línea Directa Championships B y The 2017 Linea Directa Valencian Championships came to a close on Tuesday. Once again we were treated to some high class finals, played this year under the enthusiastic eye of two Orihuela councillors and whilst not always close there was superb bowling.

The first finals to take place were the Mixed Fours & the Mixed Triples. These were able to take place together as no player was in both finals. In the all Vistabella Fours final the team of Lynne

Bishop, Charlie Watkins, Les Barber & Eric Bishop started well & kept up the pressure against their clubmates Maureen Foulcer, Tony French, Martin Foulcer & Ian Kenyon with the final score 176 in favour of Eric’s team. At the same time in the Mixed Triples, the Emerald Isle trio of Ann-Marie Stevenson, Drew Gerrard & Colin Lindgren met Sue Kemp, Lin Watkins & Brian Zelin of Vistabella. The Vistabella team led at the halfway stage 8 shots to 4 but only scored on 1 more end with the Emerald Isle trio winning 22-11. The following day we started with Men’s & Ladies Pairs Finals. In the Men’s Pairs the San Luis air of Roy Cordell & Russell Marks dominated the

T.M.G.S. @ Campoamor After missing last month’s visit due to greens maintenance, our members were in joyful mood and ready to play the 1st round of our Captain’s Stableford competition of our new season. 40 members and guests arose from their beds early for the usual 9am start. The course was in excellent condition with the greens recovering well from last month’s work, although the 6 hole does still have a temporary green, but thanks to the green keeping staff it plays like a normal green, the proof is that there were 3 “2’s” on it today ! EXTRA RACING, DIFFERENT FORMAT October is the month that many nonresident members of SAMM and those that were away during the heat of the summer arrive back in Spain. So the race Committee decided to organise racing every Sunday during the month and, by popular agreement, make the extra three dates Pursuit Racing. This involves having a race with a time limit; 90 minutes in this case, starting the slowest boat first, followed by the remaining boats at irregular intervals calculated using their handicaps. Due to the lack of early wind, the first race started at 12.10pm, in about 4 knots, with 9 boats competing around a triangular course. The little “Rosita” was away first, followed by the rest over a 26 minute period. Unfortunately “Rosita” struggled badly in the light wind and could not make the start line for over 10 minutes, so retired. A good race ensued with “Sirocco”, who was one of the second boats away, gradually being caught by

Shoestrings “Dos” and “Tres”, the last boats away and racing neck and neck. “Sirocco” finally being overtaken just minutes from the finish after completing just over two laps of the course.

By 2.40pm the wind had increased to 8 knots and this time “Mistral” and “Sirocco”, were the first boats away. The Skipper was second away, 6 minutes

later, but had to retire when her mainsail split. “Mistral” led the field for 3 laps as “Dos” and “Tres”, again racing hard against each other and just seconds apart, chased her down. They both finally passed her during the 4th lap, with 30 minutes of the race remaining and then continued to battle each other for the lead. At times only 10 seconds separated them but eventually “Tres” won by a margin of 36 seconds. The Laser Radial also managed to pass “Mistral” with just 5 minutes to go to secure third place. Everybody enjoyed the change from the normal race format and are looking forward to trying pursuit racing again in two weeks time. Morning race First: Dos, John Down/Tim Wills. Second: Tres, Jack Moss/Vernon O’Byrne. Third: Sirocco, Julian Pering/Steve Rocks. Afternoon race First: Tres, Tug Wilson/Vernon O’Byrne. Second: Dos, John Down/Kerry Marlow. Third: The Laser Radial of Norman Vener.

Tales from the top flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com

Tottenham Hotspur fans will be hoping that is the only last minute winner Harry Kane needs to score at Wembley on a Thursday night this season. Tottenham

might have made a flying start to their Champions League campaign, but England very much huffed and puffed their way to Russia 2018 qualification against Slovakia. So much so, a conspiracy theory was starting to go round social media that England were trying to stick the knife into Scotland by not beating Slovakia, as a draw at Wembley would have made it impossible for Scotland to do the impossible, and actually qualify for a major tournament. Genuinely, I believe that if you asked 90% of the England team to place Scotland on a map they would struggle, let alone care about them that much that they would even

think to knock them out in that manner. You’d hope England would prefer to do it the old fashioned way, by having the better side and finishing higher in the group than the Auld Enemy. No, England were not being clever against Slovakia, they were just being not very good at football once more. I felt for the full house at Wembley that felt even more obliged to attend, given that TfL had unhelpfully cancelled the tube strike that had been planned for that day. Still, this is England and this is football. They have carefully navigated an incredibly easy group without setting the world on fire for one single moment. They might even look half decent against Germany and Brazil in the pre-Russia friendly matches that have now been confirmed. But when it comes down to it, we will soon learn once more that Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, Brazil and probably even Iceland are better equipped to further in the tournament than us. On the plus side, at least we are not Dutch or Scottish hey? Dick Advocaat’s response to a journalist suggesting the Dutch could be in even more danger of not qualifying if Sweden were to beat Luxembourg 8-0 was priceless. If I knew the Dutch word for “scoff”, that is exactly what Advocaat did. And guess what? The Swedes slipped eight past the hapless folk of Luxembourg. France had failed to score in both games

against them and they are supposed to be one of the best sides in the world, right? England would have probably nicked it 1-0 with a late goal or something. Scotland, having bought themselves a potentially winning ticket at the raffle then proceeded to take that ticket and burn it on the bonfire. Leading 1-0 on Sunday against Slovenia, the shop was there to be shut up and Scotland simply failed to do so. Northern Ireland were the main beneficiaries of Scotland’s reluctance to be centre of the main stage, having their playoff spot confirmed before kicking off against Norway. Wales were Bale-less in Georgia but Tom Lawrence scored the winner to make Sunday’s showdown with the Republic of Ireland the biggest match of the weekend (if you were Welsh, Irish

or very bored indeed). The only problem is, these games now get spread over five or six days rather than the good old method of Saturday and Tuesday. Modern football, eh? Makes life very difficult for us writers.

Your week in sport ■ CHRIS DARWEN Lewis Hamilton stormed to the chequered flag in the Japanese Grand Prix, taking the kind of lead in the Drivers Championship that even a 1996 version of Newcastle United could not throw away. Hamilton has won five of the past seven races, finding form at the critical time and with just four races remaining it will take a Devon Loch moment of crazy proportions for him not to collect his 4th title.

Alex Hales probably will be available for the Ashes, but Ben Stokes probably won’t be after their little night out in Bristol. Hales is not expected to be charged, but it is looking increasingly likely that Stokes will not be able to fly to Australia, and if he can it will not be until the last moments before the Test series gets underway. The Australians have a few problems of their own, not least losing their first ever Test match against Bangladesh in the last series. Skipper Stevie Smith is struggling with a shoulder

injury and they have already lost key bowler James Pattinson. None of this will really matter when the series gets going however, as it is going to be a close run series no matter which two sides get fielded. Anthony Crolla and Chris Eubank Jr were victorious in the ring on Saturday night. Crolla won his lightweight bout against Ricky Burns and Eubank Jr was clinical inside three rounds against Anvi Yildrim. Rafa Nadal kept the whole golden oldies thing going on in tennis, winning the China Open. Incredibly, Nadal is still only 31, despite probably having the knees and a left elbow of an 80-year-old. Finally today, the British are still the best on a pommel horse. Max Whitlock won gold for spinning around on it repeatedly without falling off.
