Pride of Spain Awards 2017 On Friday, 20th October, the Casa de Cultura in Benijofar was awash with glamour as the 2017 Costa Blanca People Pride of Spain Awards took place. Hosted by Stevie Spit and Aoife Leddy, the awards took place in front of an audience of finalists and honoured guests for the eleventh year in a row. Supported, as always, by main sponsor Moneycorp, the awards also raised funds for the Tasha Appeal in the hope of getting Tasha to the US for Mitochondrial treatment to help prolong her life.
T
his year, there were eight categories of award winners which honoured individuals, businesses and local groups in the running for an award. The awards themselves were sponsored by a number of local businesses, with representatives of each of the sponsors presenting the prizes to each category winner. Half time entertainment was provided by the
dulcet tones of Kylie Burgazzi with songs by Adele and Pavarotti. The audience were treated to a feast of wonderful tapas by Restaurant Catorce with a delightful array of hot and cold snacks. Cake Magic supplied a wonderful celebration cake, which was sliced up and offered alongside a ‘donation tin’, adding a few more much needed euros to the Tasha Appeal. The evening was brought to a close with a raffle of a €500 holiday
L-R: Janet Campbell of Spanish Solutions/Comaskey Properties, who donated a €500 holiday voucher to the Tasha Appeal, Donna Lowman (winner of the voucher) and Claire Richards, MD of the Costa Blanca People
voucher, donated to the Tasha Appeal by Comaskey Properties and Spanish Solutions. The raffle was won by Donna Lowman who was there on the evening to accept her prize. Once again the evening proved how popular and successful the Costa Blanca People‘Pride of Span Awards’ are as a way of recognising those who do so much to
help the community and act as shining examples to the rest of us. The full programme of events from the evening is available on the Costa Blanca People website, detailing more about each finalist and their wonderful achievements. Continued on page 3

BITE SIZE NEWS: No weddings on a Saturday The town hall in Torrevieja has taken the decision that they will not be hosting weddings there in future on a Saturday morning. The reason for the decision is that Saturday is not a working day for administrators (funcionarios). The new ruling will take place from 2nd January 2018 and applies to the civil marriage ceremonies that have traditionally taken place there. In future marriage ceremonies will need to take place on either a Tuesday or Thursday at an agreed hour.
Apologies to Aroca In our article last week we showed the items bought by the San José Obrero orphanage. It was mistakenly stated that these had been bought with money raised through the raffle at Carmen’s Bar for the Sunday Roast. Although Carmen’s Bar is also raising money for the orphanage, on this occasion the donated money was from Aroca. We apologise for any confusion this has caused.
Concert in aid of Age Concern Age Concern are a well-known and highly valued charity who help promote and support the interests of English-speaking people who are retired in Spain. In order to raise money for the many different activities that they do, a concert will be held on 11th November by the Reef Band. Continued on page 5

The next tapas route announced It’s become a favourite of the people in Torrevieja and surrounding towns. Now the next ruta de la tapa has been announced as being from the 23rd November to 3rd December. The tapas route is held twice a year around the centre of Torrevieja with a number of bars and restaurants taking part and offering two tapas dishes for people to try. It’s a good opportunity for people to try new venues without spending a lot of money in each one and has grown in popularity over the years. You can vote for your favourite tapa and by collecting 10 official stamps on your tapas route card you can enter the prize draw for a number of different prizes. Watch out in the coming weeks for more details about the route and the establishments that are taking part.
The bank manager of a branch of La Caixa bank had an unpleasant surprise when a robber threatened him with a fake gun and tried to make off with €6,000. The assault took place at 8.45 am at La Caixa branch on Gregario Maranon Avenue in Torrevieja. The GRO police arrested the robber yesterday, 17th October. The robbery with intimidation took place shortly before 9.00am as
the robber entered the bank and threatened the manager with the firearm which later proved to be a fake. He prevented the manager from leaving and eventually managed to seize €6,000. The accused did not have time to flee as the police (GRO) were called and quickly entered the branch. They managed to make the arrest and took the robber to the Guardia Civil
station. The man, who is 44 years old, has committed similar crimes in the past. He has also been detained previously and was only recently released from prison. He is now being questioned about the crime. This isn’t the first time that this branch has been the target of such a crime. Suzanne O’Connell
Orihuela Costa to host its first ever Halloween Parade Next Tuesday, 31st October will be the first Orihuela Costa Halloween Parade a Costa to be held in the urbanisation La Florida. The event will also have music, children's animation, inflatables and face painting for the little ones...and everyone is invited to dress up and come along. This is the first time that this activity has been organised and seeks to bring together hundreds of adults and children dressed up to celebrate Halloween on the coast.
Costa was born from the collaboration between the associations and neighbours of the coast and the Department of Youth. In fact, the idea came from the Las Fillipinas Residents Association, with Councillor Mar Ezcurra turning the idea into reality. "In a multicultural area like this, we thought we could do a parade for the children of Orihuela Costa," explained Francisco Morales, president of the Neighbourhood Association, who thanked
Residents meeting date The next meeting of the resident/ neighbourhood watch for La Siesta, San Luis and El Chaparral residents will be on Monday 30th October at 4.30pm at Casa Ventura. There will be a representative from the town hall present at the meeting to answer your questions. It is important that those people living in this area and perhaps a little beyond, attend the meeting to make sure that it continues to be viable in the future. The group are focussed on improving the environment for those living locally and have had successes in the past. This is a good opportunity to find out directly what is happening in your local area.
Prohibition on black cat donation In the run up to Hallowe’en Councillor Carmen Morate has placed a hold on giving cats out for adoption. She is concerned that they could possibly be used as part of black magic rituals which are known to take place in the area. There is particular concern about the fate of black cats who are targeted by groups who use them as sacrifices. However, it’s not just cats that are used in the macabre rituals. Other animals too such as hens, pigeons and doves Continued on page 6
Fun for all the family
The event is a joint collaboration between the Department of Youth, Las Fillipinas Residents Association, Playas de Orihuela school, Romualdo Ballester Torrevieja, Sunrise Torrevieja, and Los Dolses school and IES Playa Flamenca. The children will parade through the streets of the Urbanisation La Florida from 6pm on Tuesday 31st October. In addition to the parade in which the children will be disguised in scary, Halloween costumes, there will be a diversity of activities such as music, children's animation, inflatables, makeup for the little ones... monsters and some other terrifying surprises. Youth Councillor, Mar Ezcurra said: "We hope it will be a very participative event with the presence of children from all over the area and that it will become a benchmark parade for the coast." And also encourages all families living in the coastal area to participate. This first Halloween Parade in Orihuela
the AMPAS (parent teachers associations) for their support and invited everyone to take part in all of the free activities organised by the City of Orihuela. Mar Ezcurra took the opportunity to remind the local community that the Department of Culture will on Sunday 12th November present ‘Hernandiano Autumn Orihuela Costa’ which will take place on the promenade of Playa Flamenca from 11am. Ths event will include a larg children's party with workshops on Miguel Hernández, crafts and poetry, inflatables, face painting, games and music from 2pm. The event will also include a craft market, the first time one has been held on the coast, and starting at 12noon a flamenco concert will pay tribute to the poet Oriolano. In addition, the Department for Culture is already preparing an extensive Christmas program that will also have various activities for the whole family in the coastal area. Mireille Toddington

WHAT TO DO ABOUT THE BIRDS They’re not usually considered to be a problem but it’s the birds of Torrevieja that are ruffling some feathers right now. It’s not so much the birds themselves as their excrement that is upsetting catering establishments around the town. The pigeons that proliferate where there are bars and restaurants are worrying their owners. They claim that they are inreasingly annoying and harassing customers eating on their terraces as well as getting more and
more cheeky and almost taking food from people’s plates as they eat. Now the political party, Sueña, has taken up the case in Torrevieja. They haveexpressed the concern on behalf of the restaurant and bar owners who are fearful that clients are staying away because of the nuisance and that this will affect trade. Sueña would like to see an increase in the budget and the town hall doing more to keep the birds at bay. They are not wanting
a wholesale cull of the bird population but some method of control to avoid the numbers there are at present. Restaurants also have a responsibility in making sure that leftovers are removed as soon as possible and not added temptation for the birds to congregate. One suggestion has been that there should be an increase in the number of images ofpredatorybirds placed around the area such as owls and eagles. These could act like scarecrows and
frighten off the pigeons. Premises can also discourage the birds from perching in specific places by having surfaces that aren’t as attractive for them to sit on. Bird droppings in some places are becoming a real concern and potential health hazard. It’s not an easy problem to tackle but Sueño fear that the problem does not help the image of Torrevieja that the town is trying to promote. Suzanne O’Connell
Chiringuitos challenge council’s decision During the summer months many people were disappointed to see that some of their favourite beach bars stayed closed during the busiest part of the season. Now the owner of two of the three beach bars that were affected in Rocío del Mar are challenging the town hall with their decision. The beach bars had been open since 2009 but just at the beginning of the summer season the town planning department issued a warrant for their closure. The basis of this was that they didn’t have an opening licence and were in fact located in an area where building isn’t allowed. The bars are focusing their case on the fact that they did have permission to serve customers on their‘terrace’and that they had already paid a licence fee for this privilege. The town hall has argued that this shouldn’t have been the case.Theyhave questioned why the police and others responsible didn’t recognise the anomaly of a licence being granted to an establishment that shouldn’t have been there in the first place. The bars
have asked that they can be allowed to reopen whilst their appeal goes through. They have already lost all their summer takings and are trying to recoup a little of the money during a busy autumn season. Added to this the dispute between the bar owner and the council could continue for years and during this time the bars could be closed unless a temporary agreement is made. A similar agreement was made with the discotheque 222 during disputes about their opening since 2013. However, the difference here is that 222 did originally have a provisional opening licence, whereas the chiringuitos have never had one of these. The town council continues in its drive to clean up the situation around opening licences. They claim that the vast majority of establishments comply and want to make sure that those that have managed to avoid the requirement until now, are brought into line. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE NEWS: Continued from page 5 can have their necks twisted and are offered up on the sea shore or at the entrances to cemeteries. Councillor Morate has taken the measure of non-adoption during the whole of October except in cases where the shelter is certain of the destination and safety of the animal. There are more requests made for black cats at this time of year than any other and it’s easy to make the link to the significance of the black cat. It’s not just Spain where this is a problem and it doesn’t just apply to the town animal shelter. Anyone who owns a black cat should be particularly careful with their pet at this time of year and be cautious about letting them out on the street. Suzanne O’Connell
Police targeted in arson attack Local police are asking for witnesses to two vehicle fires that took place on the Orihuela Costa in the early hours of Saturday morning. The municipal workers had parked their cars near to Playa Flamenca Town Hall, ironically just round the corner from the entrance to the police station, and whilst they were busy working two vehicles were set alight. Police believe that the vehicles were specifically targeted as the cars were parked apart. The arson attacks are being investigated and the possibility of the attacks being politically motivated is also an option being considered. Police are particularly concerned as not only has this senseless act caused financial burned to the owners the fires could have put many lives at risk, as residential housing is nearby.
Charity fair in Torrevieja Councillor Carmen Morate has advertised the next charity fair event. It will take place on Saturday 28th October in the Paseo Marítimo Juan Aparicio – by the Hombre del Mar right on the sea front next to the port car park. It’s an opportunity for different charitable organisations to set up stalls, display goods to sell and advertise the different ways in which people can volunteer to help them. The fair will take place from 10am until 2pm and is a good opportunity for charitable associations to raise awareness and Councillor Morate hopes to see as many voluntary groups there as possible. There will be a number of activities taking place during the morning too,
including a zumba class led by ‘Angie’ at 10am. There will be a small dog parade of homeless dogs from Torrevieja’s animal shelter and a gym show at 1pm. ‘Everyone is welcome to come along with their sports shoes and spend a fun and healthy hour with us,’ explained the councillor. During the morning there will be a collection of food for refugee camps in the Sarah organised by the FANS association. You can bring along non-perishable food items such as rice and pasta, tins of tuna, oil, sugar etc. Baby wipes would also be appreciated as a donation. Suzanne O’Connell
Way-in club raise money The ‘Way-in’ club in Torrevieja has held its sixth annual event in aid of AECC Torrevieja. The club, whose members ‘weigh-in’, is based at Casa Mia restaurant in El Chaparral. They have raised €1,724 by selling home-made cakes and holding a raffle. Casa Mia hosted the event and was supported by many other local businesses who donated gifts. AECC hospital volunteer Ann Bisett collected the donation on behalf of the organisation and thanked everyone for their generosity and hard work. The Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer provides screening services, advice, workshops and its volunteers are available to support those with cancer and their families. They would like to remind people of the importance of having screening checks for breast, cervical, skin and prostate cancer. Suzanne O’Connell

GUARDIA CIVIL ARREST ALLEGED PYROMANIAC OF GUARDAMAR WOODS
The Guardia Civil has arrested, for the second time in three days, the person allegedly behind the eight forest fires that have occurred in the pine woods of Guardamar del Segura. The arrest took place with the help of the Local Police and Valencian Police and the alleged pyromaniac was arrested the first time last Friday and after being held for 72 hours, the maximum time permitted, was released last Monday afternoon.
Then on the Tuesday another fire was started which was quickly put out by firemen from Almoradí and Guardamar. After the latest fire the man was identified as a suspect again and taken to a health centre then a refuge in Elche, according to Mayor José Luis Sáe ez. The person arrested, whose age has not been revealed, is a homeless man who may suffer from mental problems, according to police sources.
Spain identifies 800 Britons suspected of making fake sickness claims Spanish police said on Friday that they had identified around 800 British tourists suspected of having made fake food poisoning claims after going on holiday in the Balearic Islands to try to win compensation. Police have listed 77 law firms allegedly used by the tourists to file their complaints as part of their investigation, a statement said. The law firms "orchestrated a possible criminal network based on fake claims that have generated significant economic damage to the Balearic and Spanish tourism sector," it added. The Balearic Islands -- which include Ibiza, Mallorca and Menorca -- saw a 700 percent rise in sickness claims from January 2016 until the end of September, with the overall cost of the claims worth four million pounds (4.5 million euros), police said. Police said the problem of fake food poisoning claims was also affecting Spain's Canary Islands and the Levante region on the eastern Mediterranean coast, which includes the resort of Benidorm, popular with British tourists. Hotels complain that British claims management companies openly tout for business in Spanish resorts, promising not to charge any fees if no eventual damages are paid out. An ambulance emblazoned with the words "Claims Clinic" was pictured driving around Tenerife on Spain's Canary Islands last year, where more than one in three tourists is British. Spanish tourism officials say the problem has arisen because British consumer law does not require claimants to produce any medical evidence of illness, and claims can be filed up to three years after a stay at a hotel. Spain has stepped up its cooperation with Britain to halt the flood of fake claims which led British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson to say earlier this year that the digestive "systems of British people" had "become the most delicate in the world". The number of British tourists visiting Spain jumped by over 12 percent in 2016 to hit a record 17.8 million.

Free Mammograms Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja is running a campaign to prevent breast cancer by providing free mammograms. Early diagnosis of the disease, through a mammogram, lowers mortality risk by between 15 and 20%. For women interested in undergoing an examination at the Quirónsalud Torrevieja hospital centre, the mammograms period runs until the 31st of October, and interested parties may request information by phone at 648 49 51 66 from 10 am to 3 pm, by email at prevencion.trv@quironsalud.es, or on the website, http://www.quironsalud.es/torrevieja/es, to obtain an appointment until the schedule is full. Additionally, the Quirón salud Torrevieja hospital centre is participating in the organisation of an information stand for the International Day against Breast Cancer, where they will offer advice on preventing this illness and the importance of early diagnosis. The forum will include the participation of members of the Asociación de Familiares y Enfermos de Cáncer de Torrevieja (AFECÁNCER, Spanish acronym for the Torrevieja Association of Cancer Patients and Family Members). Doctor Antonio Brugarolas, head of the
Oncology Platform of the Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja, has been successfully applying a “tailored” treatment on patients, following a genetic analysis of their tumours. After each biopsy, all the genes related to the response or resistance to chemotherapy have been analysed, and the response profile of each tumour to each of the anti-tumour medications has been tested. Thus, data are obtained showing which medications are inactive and which are the most effective. Therefore, by administering the effective medication, depending on the tumour’s genes, we see a clinical improvement in 70% of patients. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in the female population in Spain, making up 29% of all cancers; it is estimated that one out of every eight women will suffer breast cancer. The increase in cases is due to the aging of the population, since its highest incidence is in women over fifty, although the incidence in women under forty has risen by 10% in the last few years. The reason for this increase in cases may be due to lifestyle changes, a tendency to have less children, the increased age women have their first pregnancy, and a history of the disease in direct family members.

AECC reach for the sky Sunday saw Maria and the Pink Ladies AECC’s annual balloon release in aid of the AECC. This is the fifth year the event has been run and it continues to be one of the charities key fundraising events with more than 16,408 euros being raised over the years. Each year the event encourages people to buy a ticket and attach it to a pink helium-filled balloon. The tickets have a space to make a dedication to a loved one lost or battling cancer. Throughout the day the balloons are placed in huge nets and released at the end of the event in what is always a very moving moment. Zenia Boulevard was busy and bustling as event supporters mingled with shoppers to join in the fun of the event, which included a full line up of entertainment in conjunction with Sunshine FM and hosted by Stevie Spit. This included: Cindy Fitzpatrick, Nikki G, Lady Jazz, Melissa Fanning, Chloe Leigh, Paul Christie, Rebecca Holt, Maria O’Hara and Kylie and Stevie. This year around two thousand balloons were bought and released, raising €3,323.78. However, over the years, across all its fundraising event the Pink Ladies have raised a total of €355,897.42. The money raised on Sunday will be used to subsidise the costs of the AECC early detection programme which includes: mammograms, smear tests, prostate examinations and skin cancer checks in the local area and to buy up to date state-of-the-art equipment to do the tests. Visitors to the event were able to book screening appointments and this can be done on-line through the Maria and the Pink Ladies website. Money was also raised through selling merchandise such as AECC branded pens, bracelets,
fans, key-rings. Maria Wilson would like to say a very big thank you to Zenia Boulevard for letting the charity hold the balloon release at the Boulevard and for the management team’s continued support. Thanks also goes to all of the Pink Ladies and Panthers who came out in force on the day and who are always key to the success of any event and to the charity - all of who are volunteers, giving their time for free. A thank you also goes to Simon Morton from Sunshine FM who is a huge

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE Politics dominates the week Catalonian independence question answered There was little news from Europe this week, the potential threat from Catalonian independence has been neutralised for now, somewhat controversially, but any subsequent rise in nationalist sentiment may pose a challenge for the currency in the future. The headline rate of inflation there was unchanged at 1.5% and the "core" index was 1.3% higher on the year. There was no reaction by the euro because Euroland interest rates are nailed to the floor and will remain there for the foreseeable future. Carney fails to calm the storm The pound has once again been buffeted by the twin forces of Brexit negotiations and the Bank of England this week. The previous week saw no progress in the negotiations, and there were suggestions that PM Theresa May did not have anything new to offer the EU president when she met with him early this week. In anticipation of a statement by Bank of England governor Mark Carney, the pound rose early in the day, but dipped again as investors appears disappointed at the lack of clear statements in his testimony to the Treasury Select Committee. While he did confirm that a rate increase might be appropriate “in the coming months,” there was no confirmation of when this would take place. All eyes on the next US Fed Chair The US inflation figures released at the end of last week were lower than forecast, but this had little impact on the dollar. Investors were primarily looking forward as the time approaches for the nomination of Janet Yellen’s
replacement as the new Federal Reserve chair. It seems unlikely that Janet Yellen will serve another term at the Fed. The dollar could be expected to react positively if the new chairperson is seen to have a more hawkish attitude to monetary policy than the current incumbent. RBA stands firm on interest rates Down under, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) confirmed that they would not be raising interest rates from the benchmark 1.5% in the foreseeable future. Despite changes on the horizon elsewhere, the RBA stated that moves towards tighter policy by central banks elsewhere "did not have mechanical implications for the setting of policy in Australia". New government for New Zealand It was a big week for New Zealand, but not necessarily a good news week for the New Zealand dollar. The market reacted positively to the Consumer Prices index, which went up by 0.5% in the third quarter, lifting the annual rate of inflation from 1.7% to 1/9%. However, this was short lived and any gains made were given back the same day. The big story is the new coalition government now that. Winston Peters, the leader of the New Zealand First party, has agreed to team up with Labour and the Greens, making Jacinda Ardern the next prime minister in place of Bill English. An an unknown quantity, the market did not react positively to the news and the New Zealand dollar struggled to keep its head above water now that the uncertainty of the election has been followed by more uncertainty in the form of a brand new government.

Finance & Tax Forum T
he first Finance & Tax Forum was held on 5th October in the wonderful La Laguna Hotel in Quesada. As with any new event, the three companies involved, Currencies Direct, Pellicer & Heredia and ourselves, were slightly nervous as to the outcome. Well, what a wonderful success it was for everyone concerned. The first speaker, Roberto standing in for Ignacio Pellicer from the Spanish lawyers, gave an in‐depth insight into the complicated Spanish Tax system for both residents and non‐ residents. Second on stage was Andrew from Currencies Direct, and he gave the audience an insight into the world of currency transfers as well the background of the company. Lastly, Chris from Seagate Wealth spoke about pensions, the options under Pension Freedom legislation, as well as tracing lost pensions. The second topic he dealt with was how to beat the low interest rates offered by banks with an insight into a Spanish Tax Compliant savings bond offered by one of the UK’s foremost financial services organisation. Once all the presentations were completed, coffee was taken and this was where the audience got to chat to the experts, ask their questions and arrange for follow‐up meetings. The feedback from everyone who attended was very positive, as all agreed they had gained new knowledge that would certainly help with their life here in Spain. As everyone seemed to enjoy and benefit from the forum, we have decided to hold another one on Wednesday 8th November. So if you could not attend the last one, or think this might be the ideal opportunity to speak to the local experts, then reserve your place now. Call 965 704 338 or email: Marketing@SeagateWealth.es

Fennel is a gorgeous Mediterranean perennial herb with a delicate aniseed flavour and is often used in Mediterranean dishes. The stalks and leaves can be used in salads or as a garnish, the swollen leaf base (bulb) is eaten like a vegetable, and the seeds are used for flavouring.
Description: Fennel is composed of a white or pale green bulb from which closely superimposed stalks are arranged. The stalks are topped with feathery green leaves near which flowers grow and produce fennel seeds. The bulb, stalk, leaves and seeds are all edible. The fennel bulb is used like a vegetable and adds nuanced flavouring to all kinds of foods. Fennel belongs to the Umbellifereae family and is therefore closely related to parsley, carrots, dill and coriander. Fennel’s aromatic taste is unique, strikingly reminiscent of liquorice and anise, so much so that fennel is often mistakenly referred to as anise. Fennel’s texture is similar to that of celery, having a crunchy and striated texture. Climate & Growing Conditions: Fennel is an easy herb to grow for any beginner gardener and is generally problem-free. It thrives in hot, dry climates, but will grow in nearly all garden climates. Once the bulb has started growing, a few days of hot temperatures can cause it to bolt, or start producing seed instead of bulbs and stems, so good timing is the key. For growing fennel in warm climates, plant in autumn. For growing fennel in colder climates, plant in the spring. This herb is very forgiving when it comes to soil pH, but grows best when the pH is between 6.0 and 7.0. Prepare the garden bed before planting by digging in compost and well-rotted manure. For success in growing this vegetable, make sure that its garden bed is well-drained. Fennel grows up to 5 feet (1.5 m) tall so consider the best location for them when planning to add fennel to your garden (you may wish to
plant it at the back). Also, since it is a perennial, you will want to plant it in an area that is convenient for allowing it to stay in that gardening location. Fennel has a reputation for hindering other plants’growth, so place your fennel patch in an isolated location. It typically does not do well with other vegetables and should never be planted close to dill as fennel and dill will cross-pollinate and in this case neither herb will be fit to eat. However, fennel does not have to be planted by itself. To add a splash of colour and add to culinary delights of fennel, consider planting mint, nasturtiums, and marigolds alongside the fennel. Planting: Fennel is a sunshine lover, so pick a sunny location. Plant the seeds 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) deep and lightly cover with soil. It will take the seeds 10 to 14 days to geminate. Be sure to keep them moist until they germinate and watch that soil doesn’t dry out completely during hot spells. Once germination has occurred, start thinning the plants out so that there are about 12-20 inches (30-50 cm) separating each seedling. Check soil moisture often and water accordingly. Fennel does not like it soggy, but it also does not like it dry. Fennel can also be planted in a container. When planting in a container choose a large one and do not plant too many seeds. How to Harvest: Fennel is ready to harvest in stages. It needs about 70 days to produce a good size bulb, while young greens/fresh leaves can be picked anytime during the growing process. The seeds need to be harvested just before the seed heads turn completely brown. Simply place them in a paper bag and hang upside down in a cool, shady place. As the seeds dry, they will fall into the bag for collection. Fennel not only tastes good, but it is also a good way of attracting beneficial insects to the garden. These include, among many others, bees, ladybirds and butterflies. Fennel is a host plant for swallowtail butterflies, so do not kill the larvae you are sure to find munching on the leafy fronds. The leaves will grow back. Fennel is also known to repel fleas in the yard and can be found planted around many kennels due to this fact. There is no such thing as too much fennel in the garden… Marc Vijverberg

WELCOME TO SKOPJE with Vivalia Travel
Skopje is the capital of the Republic of Macedonia; it is in the Povardarie region, and is the largest and most diverse city in the country. Skopje has been occupied by many different peoples since its foundation. This is evidenced by the several Byzantine churches and monasteries around the city, also by a few Roman sites, such as Scupi and Skopje's Aqueduct. However, the group that left the greatest mark on Skopje were the Ottomans. The Ottomans ruled Macedonia for hundreds of years and built a large number of mosques and other buildings. Today, Skopje is becoming a modern city. Home to about quarter of the entire population of the country, it is also home to many different types of people. Besides the majority Macedonians, many Albanians, Turks, Roma, Serbs, Bosniaks and others call Skopje home. Skopje is the financial and political center of Macedonia and by far its biggest city. The city population is between 500,000-660,000. THINGS TO SEE AND DO Perhaps the main symbol of Skopje is the Warrior on a Horse statue and fountain in the centre of Macedonia Square. It is typically thought to depict Alexander the Great, though it is not officially named for him. The monument was built in Florence and was officially
completed on 8th September, 2011 to commemorate 20 years of the independence of the Republic of Macedonia. The Kale Fortress stands on the highest hill in the Skopje valley and offers great views over the city. The oldest section of the fortress is within the present day fortifications. It is 121m long and is built in opus qvadrum style (huge stone blocks on the outside and small stones inside) by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian who was born in the village of Taorion near Skopje. The Stone Bridge was built in the 6th century by the Byzantine emperor Justinian. Since then it has been the symbol of the city and every ruler tried to leave a mark on it, even Skopje's last major who has been restoring it for 10 years now. Even though most of the interesting sights are on the other side of the Stone Bridge, there are couple of interesting sights around Macedonia Square. The square has changed a lot after the earthquake, most of the neoclassical buildings are gone except for a small section of houses in the center. On the other hand, you can do several interesting things in Skopje. Explore Matka Canyon, Features a lake and a
hydrodam. Locals go there in the summer to swim in the river and picnic. Starting from the hydrodam, there is a 6km long walking trail along the canyon that leads you to another dam. Another important event is Skopje Summer Festival. The epithets such as the most abundant, the most various, the longest and, according to many authorized marks, one of the most qualitative cultural manifestation of international character which is held in Macedonia, characterize Skopje Summer. EAT AND DRINK Macedonia’s capital offers something to satisfy all modern tastes and appetites. Make sure to try the famous Macedonian foods such as burek, Shopska Salata, and others. Skopje’s eateries are plentiful and offer a diverse range of local and international flavours. International cuisine is well represented in Skopje with Chinese, Italian, Indian, Greek, Mexican, Middle Eastern and French restaurants all found within the city centre. In addition, pizza and fast food places abound, as do small bakery cafes selling pastries such as the ubiquitous burek (a flaky filo pie stuffed with meat, cheese or spinach).

Spain cuts growth forecast Spain's government has announced it is cutting its forecast from 2.6 percent to 2.3 percent for economic growth next year, saying the political crisis in Catalonia was creating uncertainty. It said in a budget plan sent to Brussels that it was down to the economic cycle as well as "a slight containment of domestic demand, resulting from the negative impact of the uncertainty associated with the current political situation in Catalonia". Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy had already warned about the economic impact of the political standoff in a letter sent to separatist Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont. "The latest steps taken by you and your government are causing a major divide in Catalan society, as well as enormous economic uncertainty that threatens people's well-being,"
Rajoy wrote. Representing about a fifth of Spain's economic output, separatists argue that wealthy Catalonia pays more into the country's coffers than it gets back and could prosper by going it alone. But those who back unity say a split would spell economic and political disaster. The two biggest Catalan banks are among hundreds of companies that have moved their legal headquarters to other parts of Spain, while ratings agency Standard and Poor's has warned of a recession in the region if the crisis drags on. The Spanish government says growing uncertainty over Catalonia, which is deeply indebted to Madrid and which cannot borrow internationally, imperils Spain's recovery from the financial crisis.
F-18 combat jet crashes killing Murcian pilot An F-18 combat jet belonging to the Spanish Air Force crashed last Tuesday morning at the Torrejón de Ardoz airbase in Madrid, an accident likely caused by engine failure. The pilot was killed on impact, said sources at the Defense Ministry. The pilot was Lieutenant Fernando Pérez Serrano, who was 26 years old from Murcia. The accident took place during takeoff. Rescue teams sent to the scene confirmed that the pilot was unable to eject from the cockpit in time. “Aircraft has had an accident inside airbase. Do not hinder emergency services,” read a tweet sent out by the airbase.
The Ministry of Defence pointed to “a loss of power” as the reason for the crash. Sources also added that the mechanics had warned that the engine of the F-18 was making a strange noise. Military sources said that the plane apparently crashed against a parapet located at the end of the runway, and barely managed to get any lift – just 50 meters – before crashing. This is the second time in under a week that a Spanish military aircraft has crashed. On Thursday 12th October, a pilot was killed when his plane crashed as he was returning to base after participating in a flyby as part of the National Day military parade.

Property market looking bright New mid-season Residential properties under construction in Spain being abandoned at half-mast were a common sight during the worst years of the financial crisis, but more are being finished off now than ever since the housing market began to recovery. Between January and July this year – the latest figures available at present – a total of 33,085 homes, mostly apartments, were completed, says the central government's ministry of public works.
properties were much higher in proportion last year, they have still more than doubled so far this year in number, from the 318 completed in 2016. Nearly two-thirds of homes completed between January and July 2017 inclusive were the work of private-sector companies – 20,043 overall, a year-onyear rise of 46.3 percent. Another 10,706 were built by individuals or freehold communities, up by 22.8 percent, and 1,287 by cooperatives, a rise of 81.8 percent, with
Over the course of 2017, from January to August inclusive, property buying and selling rose by 14 percent, largely helped by bumper sales in the last of these eight months which saw a hike of 6 percent on July. August 2017's year-on-year rise was not quite as buoyant as that of July – where the difference in sales compared with the same month in 2016 was 16.8 percent - but was still the third-best result since February 2011, with more homes shifted than ever and only beaten in number by May and June 2011 when each month saw over 44,000 properties shift hands.
Continued rise
This represents a 39 percent hike on the same seven months in 2016, a year which saw the numbers of new builds finished off fall for the ninth consecutive 12-month period. Since Spain's record high of 641,419 new properties being completed, in 2007, the total had plummeted by 94 percent by the end of last year. Of the 33,085 finished by the end of July 2017, a total of 97.7 percent - or 32,312 – were built by private-sector developers, with the remaining 773 built by public authorities, or 2.3 percent. Since the same period in 2016, private developments have gone up by 37.4 percent – but although local authority
the remaining 276 being developers of other legal status. The amount of money spent on finishing off new-build residential homes in the first seven months of this year rose by 45 percent on the same period in 2016, to a total of just under €4.4 billion. Meanwhile, home sales and purchases went up by 16 percent in August based upon the previous year's figures, following four months of consecutive decline, according to Spain's National Institute of Statistics (INE). That month, 82.1 percent of the total of 41,282 residential properties which changed owners were resale, with the rest being new builds.
Second-hand home sales in August represented a rise of 14.9 percent yearon-year, whilst new-build sales increased by 21.3 percent, totalling 7,396. The highest number of homes purchased was seen in the Valencia region, with 163 bought per 100,000 inhabitants, and followed closely by the Balearic Islands' 152 and Andalucía's 125. A total of 8,224 were bought in Andalucía in August, the highest total per region, followed by Catalunya's 6,720 and Valencia's 6,370. The fewest numbers of sales were seen in La Rioja, where only 262 properties were bought, followed by Navarra's 477 and Cantabria's 507. Every region registered a year-on-year rise in August – the highest being in Castilla-La Mancha, at 37.9 percent, above Valencia at 32.5 percent and Galicia at 23 percent, whilst the lowest increases were seen in Navarra, at 1.9 percent and the Basque Country, at 4 percent.
fashion sales Well-known fashion brands on the high street have announced a mid-season sale to help stimulate sales of their autumnwinter 2017 collections, which are not shifting because of the unusually warm weather for the time of year. In general, fashion sales are rising, with a year-on-year increase of 1.4 percent seen up to September – but with the mercury sitting at around 30ºC in most of Spain this October, buying winter woollies is far from most shoppers' minds. National department store El Corte Inglés has announced deals of up to 40 percent off until Thursday, 26th October inclusive, particularly in young fashions, women's clothing and accessories and in its bespoke budget brand Sfera. Upmarket women's clothing and accessories brand Bimba & Lola has also slashed up to 40 percent off its prices, and high-end streetwear label Desigual has discounted its AW17 range by 30 percent. Low-cost high-street chain Mango has a mass sale on, whilst Cortefiel has
announced discounts of up to 50 percent - although it is not clear whether this includes the lines by the late designer Pedro del Hierro, whose brand has been owned by Cortefiel for some years. Budget chain Springfield and underwear brand Women's Secret are also offering up to 50% off selected products, whilst the Inditex empire is advertising 'special prices' for its lowercost labels, Zara, Stradivarius, Bershka and Pull&Bear. And Swedish giant H&M is offering 20 percent off all purchases of €50 or more. Industry federation ACOTEX says the 1.4 percent sales increase seen as at September is not quite such good news as it appears, since last year saw that month's figures plunge by 7.3 percent. ACOTEX believes it has more to do with the weather than any financial crisis in consumer spending – September is fast becoming the hottest month of the year in Spain, and beaches are continuing to be full at weekends even now in mid-October.

G6 Summit in Sevilla tackles human trafficking, terrorism and migration Organised crime, human trafficking, Jihad terrorism and mass migration were among the hot topics of conversation at the G6 Summit in Sevilla. Hosted by its former mayor and current interior minister Juan Ignacio Zoido, the meeting saw him join his counterparts from the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Poland in analysing and discussing common European Union policy on these four major global issues. In a statement to the press at Hotel Eurostars Torre Sevilla, where the G6 Summit took place, Zoido revealed that the European Commissioners for Security and Migration, and the interior minister in Morocco, had been invited, especially given the 'significance' of the latter country 'in the battle against Jihad terrorism and in preventing the migratory pressure suffered by southern Europe'. Zoido recalls that the current wave of migration to Europe is 'unprecedented' and calls for 'a series of legal mechanisms and adequate procedures' to help establish 'legal migration' and prevent immigrants from
becoming victims or prisoners of mafia-style human-trafficking rackets.
The joint efforts of southern EU countries and bilateral policies involving African coastal nations bordering the Mediterranean and those in the Sahel, as well as procedures set up between Spain and Morocco, are 'giving very satisfactory results'. As an example, Spain and Mauritania have managed to stop all 'irregular' migration from the latter country to the Canary Islands, and the Sahel countries – Sénégal, Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso – which are currently 'coping with a massive current of migration', are cooperating closely with Europe to prevent Jihad terrorists from reaching the EU from central Africa. Zoido stresses that cooperation with migration source countries, destination
countries and transit nations is fundamental, since this is where 'processions of immigrants led and exploited by mafias' are most at risk. The Summit will discuss the recent attacks in Barcelona, France and the UK and how border controls can help prevent terrorists from getting into the EU, says Zoido – despite the fact that the majority of these attacks were carried out by Jihad followers who were born in Europe or had been based there since early childhood. The minister, when asked pointedly about the fact that the deadline for Spain to take in its promised 18,000 refugees expired in September, stressed that this 'did not mean' the government was 'unwilling' to take them. “Just because the deadline has passed doesn't mean they can't still be taken in and resettled,” Zoido insisted. “We're on stand-by waiting for them to be sent to us, and we've made this clear to all the international organisations managing the issue, as well as to France and Italy.”

Don’t get stressed, think H.O.U.S.E! Rebecca Serwotka Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today!
They say that selling a home, is one of the most stressful things you can go through in life. Me personally, I don’t think so, but then again I am doing this every day! One main thing is to not let the stress take over you. Here are a few tips on how to deal with stress when selling your home. Remember H.O.U.S.E! 1. How to go with the flow: You will never beat the system, so fretting about how slow things are going, will only drive you insane. In Spain, most of the paperwork side of the sale, will all be done on the day of completion, so don’t panic if you feel things are moving slowly. 2. Ok to be prepared: As long as you prepare for your move, everything will go through smoothly. You will be working towards a date for completion, so allow yourself plenty of time to pack up your personal effects, and book in the removal company to move your furniture and/or boxes out of the home a couple of days before. 3. Use a currency company: If you are taking your funds back to the U.K., set up an account with a currency company like MoneyCorp. They will be able to transfer your Euros back to your U.K. account, but most of all, they will save you a lot
of money. The local Spanish banks charge a small fortune to deposit Bankers Drafts, and to make a transfer. 4. So don’t do it on your own: Use your trusted Real Estate Agent to help make this a smooth process for you. They can guide you in the right direction, and take the unnecessary stress away from you. 5. Everyone makes an offer, so don’t get annoyed: We all would like to think that we own the best house in the street. We have the best view. The best location, and how could anyone not see the value in the asking price. But let’s face facts – people will make offers. So some will be lower than others. No big deal. You’re not obligated to accept anything. So don’t think the buyer is being insulting, they are only doing what you are going to do on your next purchase! They want a deal! Don’t take it personally, and try to take your emotions out of this equation, as it will only cause you stress. Ryanair still tops in Spain despite EU fine cancellations Despite a massive wave of cancellations that were prompted by a pilot scheduling problem, Ryanair is managing to maintain its market dominance. The Irish low-cost carrier was the top passenger transport company at airports operated by Spanish airports operator AENA in the month of September, despite being embroiled in the staffing crisis. The company, which is headed up by colourful businessman Michael O’Leary, carried 3.67 million passengers at Spanish airports last month, which is 1.2 million more customers than its competitor, Vueling. That Spanish airline came second in the rankings of individual airlines, with 2.46 million travellers, according to data from AENA. Former Spanish flag carrier Iberia, with 1.27 million passengers, ranks third. However, if all the customers of the Iberia network are taken into account the figure comes in at 2.6 million. The group also counts on a low-cost subsidiary, Iberia Express (486,189 passengers in September), and Air Nostrum (397,794 passengers). When the rankings look at customer numbers of company groups and not individual brands, the IAG corporation – which comprises Iberia, Vueling and British Airways – comes out on top, as it flew a total of 4.62 million passengers last month. Apart from these two large groups, British budget airline easyJet transported 1.46 million passengers in September,
well ahead of Air Europa’s 936,828 passengers. Norwegian grew to 741,137 customers in Spain in September, while Air Berlin saw its traffic fall in Spain to 24,324 passengers, following the bankruptcy of the company. AENA’s passenger numbers at domestic airports confirm Ryanair’s momentum on a global scale. The Irish low-cost carrier managed to increase passenger traffic last September by 10 percent compared to the same month last year. It reached 11.8 million passengers, despite having to face the first of three recent cancellation announcements, according to figures reported by the company itself. The occupation index increased two points in September and reached 97 percent, compared to the same month of the previous year. Traffic in the last 12 months grew 12 percent to 127.3 million customers. Ryanair announced the cancellation of 2,100 flights from mid-September to the end of October, affecting 315,000 passengers because of a scheduling problem due to a lack of pilots. The company clarified on Tuesday that they have reimbursed or rescheduled 98 percent of those travellers on other flights or alternative routes. The company later announced more cancellations through March 2018 related to the same planning issue. It recently announced another 212 cancelled flights due to a French air traffic controllers strike on 10th October.
Improvements The news comes hot on the heels of Ryanair making two big announcements, one that the business has been steadily recruiting pilots with 45 being employed on one day last week. The second announcement is that Peter Bellew, the current CEO of Malaysia Airlines, will again join the Ryanair team as Chief Operations Officer. Bellew will take charge of all Ryanair flight operations, as well as ground and engineering, focusing especially on the production, training and professional development of pilots. The aim of this new addition is to ensure that the failure in the planning of the roster that suffered Ryanair in September, is not repeated again. Bellew, who worked at Ryanair until 2014 as Director Flight Operations, will join the Ryanair team in Dublin from Friday, 1st December.
Michael O'Leary, CEO of Ryanair, commented: "...Peter has an unparalleled knowledge of our business model and the management and control of growth, maintaining a leading punctuality in the sector for the benefit of our clients and staff. Peter will lead a significant transformation in the way we reward and interact with our pilots, improving their working environment and professional development over the next few years.” Ryanair carries 131 million passengers a year, operating more than 2,000 daily flights from 86 bases and connecting more than 205 destinations in 33 countries. The airline has a fleet of more than 430 Boeing 737 and has a new order of 240 additional Boeing 737s in motion, which will allow it to reduce its tariffs and increase passenger traffic to 200 million annually by 2024. Ryanair currently has more than 13,000 highly qualified employees working to deliver Europe's highest punctuality rates, plus a flawless 32-year safety record. In 2017, Ryanair has become the first European airline to carry more than 1 billion passengers.
Spain is facing fines from the EU after failing to control pollution in urban areas. The European Commision has sent a 'final warning' to Spain for failing to comply with EU air pollution levels. Experts have blasted Spain for failing to comply with EU air pollution levels. It comes as Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) – which can cause serious respiratory problems – was found in excess levels in urban areas across the country. Madrid and Barcelona, in particularly, have settled into a state of ‘chronic noncompliance,’ claims green group Ecologistas en Accion. “They have failed to comply year after year with regulations since enforcement began in 2010,” said a spokesman. He did however praise Madrid for its car bans and its plans to introduce further restrictions, saying ‘it is adopting measures for permanent reductions’ of pollution. But ‘Barcelona does not have those ambitious goals,’ he said. The European Commission sent a ‘final warning’ to Spain for ‘constant noncompliance’ in February, with Brussels stating the pollution ‘poses a serious health risk.’ The country is now likely to be heavily fined. According to the Ministry of Environment, Valencia, Granada and San Sebastián de la Gomera in the Canary Islands are also bad offender, ‘mainly due to traffic.’

Drug bust
Local author publishes lessons in love
The Local Police of Orihuela and the Civil Guard have dismantled a drug farm dedicated to the production of marijuana plants in the hamlet of San Bartolomé. During the operation the officers arrested a person involved in the cultivation of marijuana plants. The arrested man had a total of 43 marijuana plants on the terrace of the house, hidden by mesh so as not to be seen from the outside. The drugs haul is thought to be worth around 50,000 euros, had it hit the street and been sold. The Councillor for Citizen Security, Mariola Rocamora, has congratulated the agents for their work, showing his satisfaction with the police operation with the aim of protecting the public health of the citizens of Orihuela. Mireille Toddington Local author publishes lessons in love: Available now Local author Lyn Smith has published a book for women who are unsatisfied with their current relationship status. Either because they are unhappy being single or are currently in an unfulfilling relationship - and it’s already exceeding expectations. Since The Cupid’s Bow Technique: From Casual To Committed Using The Power Of Polarisation hit Amazon the response has been fantastic, with Lyn being invited to speak at conferences, seminars and on UK radio stations. The book is a step-by-step guide to attracting or creating a healthy committed relationship with the love of your life, with all the intimacy, passion and peace you could ever want.
Lyn, who lives in La Florida, has a proven track record as an International Relationship Transformation Expert, is an inspirational speaker and a best-selling author. In the book Lyn looks at the principles of polarisation, why stepping into feminine power brings out the natural strong masculine male inside him, what men really think about a woman who pursues them and why you would never want to be that woman, how to deal with men when they connect one moment but then are distant the next, how to use disinterest and detachment as your aces in the deck, why men thrive in the chase and why the chase has to be as challenging as an obstacle course. Lyn Smith spent most of her life growing up and living in England and currently splits her time between the UK and Spain. As a teenager, she was subjected to several traumatic experiences that went on to impact her ability to trust, love and enjoy relationships with men, this went on for decades. As a result she felt driven to heal herself and discover how to form healthy relationships. Over the past 30 years, based upon her personal research and training with the world’s leading industry experts, plus her vast experiential learning, she has subsequently designed and presented her own course programmes to share these break-through relationship techniques with women across the globe. The book is available now on Amazon priced just £4.99. Mireille Toddington

MOBILE ECO-PARKS
Recycling unit for the coast The Department of Road Cleaning and waste Collection is preparing for, in a few weeks time, the delivery of reconditioned mobile municipal ecoparks. One will be placed on the coast and the others located the urban area and districts. This will see the ecoparks back in use after a downtime of about three years. The Councillor responsible for road cleaning explained that the ecoparks will be launched “to be able to reactivate the collection of waste that should not and cannot go to the usual containers”, adding that the investment “is minimal, since what we are doing is to repair them and equip them with a new design, since they still had the image of the old UTE”. The total cost of the action will be 3,535.14 euros. Councillor Aparicio said that local residents ‘respond to any calls made to recycle waste’ and considers that the City of Orihuela must respond to the sensitivity of its neighbours by recy-
cling, He added that this is ‘something we can promote with the new routes that will lead to the ecoparks, which will cover the entire municipality’. At the moment, the department is designing a new itinerant location calendar that will be launched in a few weeks, when the department will present the mobile ecoparks ready for commissioning. The Councillor said that the reason the ecoparks had been left unused was due to the fact that they had been damaged or in some cases involved in accidents. This coupled with a lack of sufficient personnel and the machinery needed for its operation. This type of ecopark will be available to citizens for the deposit and subsequent collection and recycling of light bulbs, waste electrical and electronic equipment (SAR), paint cans, household oil, and disposable computer equipment. STRANDED MONARCH PASSENGERS ALL HOME The UK Civil Aviation Authority’s twoweek flying programme has now ended with the last flight touching down at London Luton Airport at just after 03:30 on last Monday (16th October). The flight from Tel Aviv with 122 passengers on board brought to a close the programme that was launched in response to the Monarch Airlines administration. The final day included 23 flights with seats for 4,500 people from 20 destinations. The 24/7 CAA operation saw more than 60 aircraft, from 27 global airlines involved in the programme, with support from many government departments and agencies, a wide range of aviation industry operators and businesses at home and abroad. During the operation, almost 85,000 people flew to six airports in the UK, from more than 30 destinations in 14 countries across the Mediterranean and beyond, including Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, Sweden and Israel.
In total, the operation has flown more than 1.5 million miles. Andrew Haines, Chief Executive of the Civil Aviation Authority, said: “This has been a phenomenal challenge and one that has required the cooperation and support of many businesses, government departments and individuals. I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has played their part. Completing this unique two week flying programme has only been possible because of the dedication and commitment of so many people.” “It was a very sad day when Monarch went into administration and our thoughts remain with all the Monarch employees who have lost their jobs. We know that companies across the aviation sector are identifying opportunities for Monarch staff and we will do all that we can to offer support where possible. The UK has a strong and successful
aviation industry and the skills offered by Monarch employees are sure to be in demand. “We’ve operated almost 570 dedicated flights to return passengers to the UK, with 98 per cent of passengers arriving home on the day of their original departure. Like any other airline, we faced operational challenges, including bad weather and air traffic control strikes. Despite this, so much of the feedback we have received from passengers has been very positive. This was not a job that any of us wanted to do but we are pleased to have all played our part in Britain’s largest peacetime repatriation.” While the main repatriation programme has now ended, the CAA is proactively contacting all 1,000 ATOL protected passengers still abroad in order to arrange alternative flights to get them home when their trip has ended.

Catalan bid for freedom hits another hurdle Spain’s Constitutional Court has unanimously confirmed that the referendum law passed by the Catalan parliament on 6th September is unconstitutional, and devoid of any binding legal force. The law had already been on hold since 7th September, when the court preemptively suspended it while it considered the case ahead of the referendum, which was ultimately held on 1st October. The decision finds that the unprecedented and “arbitrary” way in which the pro-independence majority in the Catalan chamber rammed the bill through without proper debate “committed very serious violations of legislative procedure.” The entire opposition within the Catalan parliament walked out in protest when the bill was put to the vote. The minority government of Junts pel Si, a pro-independence coalition that gets legislative support from a small anticapitalist party called CUP, drafted this bill in order to provide a legal framework
for an independence referendum that had already been banned by the Constitutional Court. Another controversial piece of legislation paving the way for a transition to an independent republic was passed two days later in a similar fashion. In its decision, the court states that the referendum law “encroaches upon state powers on referendum-type consultations, and violates the supremacy of the Constitution, national sovereignty and the indissoluble unity of the Spanish nation.” Under the Spanish Constitution, referendums may only be held at the national, not regional, level. The Catalan referendum law skirted this rule, while the transition law awarded itself a higher position on the legal hierarchy than the Constitution itself. The court notes that whether Catalonia remains a part of Spain, or not, is not the sole decision of residents of
Catalonia, but of all citizens of Spain. The court adds that constitutional reform is possible, but only through the channels established for that purpose – not outside the law. Regional parliaments may request such a move. By acting outside these channels, the Catalan parliament has placed itself “outside the law” and left Catalan citizens “at the mercy of a power that says it recognizes no limits.” The referendum was held on 1st October despite the ban, and members of the National Police and Civil Guard were sent in to ensure that voting didn’t take place, after the regional police force failed to take action. Images of riot officers confronting crowds of would-be voters made world headlines and prompted accusations of police violence. Police search Also, Civil Guard officers have recently
entered the central building of the 112 emergency services in the Catalan city of Reus in search of telephone recordings from 1st October, according to police sources. The officers’ presence was part of a court investigation into the illegal independence referendum held that day, the High Court of Catalonia (TSJC) said in a statement. The operation is part of a judge’s probe into whether the regional police force, Mossos d’Esquadra, failed to take sufficient action to prevent the referendum from being held, despite having received explicit court orders to confiscate ballot boxes. All emergency calls made to 112 are recorded. The court had told Mossos leaders to preserve any relevant conversations from 1st October and turn them over. Civil Guard officers entered the premises at 9am and left three and a half hours later.
This investigation is separate from another one taking place at Spain’s High Court, which is focused on examining charges of sedition against Mossos chief Josep Lluís Trapero, who had his passport confiscated on Monday. Meanwhile, the Mossos have informed the High Court of Catalonia, which is seeing its own case against the Catalan government over 1st October, that they have launched an internal investigation to determine whether any officers deliberately ignored orders from their superiors.

World Osteoporosis Day It's invisible, and it's dangerous. Osteoporosis, which causes bones to become weak and fragile, only reveals itself when a bone breaks. In older adults that first 'fragility fracture' is often a broken wrist, or sudden back pain due to undetected vertebral fractures. Sadly, the first fracture is often not the last - unless treated, a cascade of more debilitating fractures can occur. This week, on World Osteoporosis Day, the call to 'Love Your bones - Protect your future' by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and its 240 member societies worldwide, emphasizes the importance of early prevention as the key to healthy mobility at older age. Fractures due to osteoporosis represent a major healthcare burden, causing disability, premature death, and loss of independence in seniors worldwide. Globally, one in three women and one five men over the age of 50 will suffer a fragility fracture in their remaining lifetimes. IOF also calls on everyone who is concerned about osteoporosis patient rights to sign the online IOF Global Patient Charter <https://www.iofbonehealth.org/iof-
global-patient-charter>. The Charter urges governments and health authorities around the world to make bone health a priority healthcare issue. The IOF President adds: "Prevention is key. At all ages, a healthy lifestyle with good nutrition and regular physical activity lays the foundation for good bone health. As well, I urge all older adults to be aware of any personal risk factors for osteoporosis. These can include a broken bone after the age of 50, parental history
of osteoporosis or hip fracture, loss of height, smoking, being underweight, certain diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, or use of medications that cause bone loss (such as glucocorticoids). If you have risk factors, be sure to talk to you doctor and ask for testing." To see whether you have risk factors, complete the IOF One-Minute Osteoporosis Risk Test <https://www.iofbonehealth.org/iofone-minute-osteoporosis-risk-test>

Forty tapas and gin-tonics to taste on the Orihuela route The Councillor for Tourism, Sofía Álvarez, has hosted the tapas and gin-tonics of the participating establishments at the Municipal Library María Moliner. The event saw all the dishes presented and allowed those present to sample them before the tapas route opens. This year will see the city run its fifth annual Route of the Tapa and Gin-tonic, which will take place in the streets of Orihuela from 10th to 12th November.
The councillor has declared her satisfaction with the high participation this year, in addition to emphasising the strong commitment from the area and explained she wants the event to “use Orihuela’s gastronomy as a promotional tool abroad along with our historical, heritage, festive and natural tourism potential of our city.” As a novelty, this year the establishments have been able to create
and present several tapas, in different categories. Supporters of the event can download the mobile app ‘Rutappa’ where they can get details of the varieties of tapas and gin-tonics, in addition to all the information regarding the event. The app also allows people to vote for their favourite tapa and gin. A total of 25 establishments are registered, and prizes will be awarded in five categories: Gourmet Tapa, Sweet
Tapa and Traditional Tapa. A prize wll alos go to the establishment with the most votes for its Gin-tonic through the mobile application, and a special prize will be awarded to one of the members of the public who use the app to vote. The official jury will comprise representatives of the companies sponsoring the event, along with three gastronomic experts: Carlos Corredor, director of the Gastronomic Guide of
Alicante; Antonio Marquerie, professor and director of the International Chair of Mediterranean Gastronomy of the Catholic University of Murcia; and José Antonio Sánchez, manager and chef of the restaurant Els Vents de Alicante, aspiring to a Michelin Star. The price of the traditional drink and tapa will be 1 euro, while the tapas in the sweet and gourmet category will cost 1.50, leaving the price of gin-tonic to be allocated by the establishment. Susan from Montesinos asks: Hi Aunty. When I open an email I keep running into problems when I try to print it. The email can be read ok but I can’t see any options to print it. I am using Google Chrome and my email is with Hotmail. I used to be able to simply click on a print icon but this has recently disappeared and the whole screen looks completely different. Aunty Says: Hello Susan. I think Microsoft have yet again changed the layout of their email system and the print button will likely be hidden behind some kind of dropdown menu. Luckily holding down the Ctrl key and pressing the ‘P’ key will still bring up the good old print function (works with all versions of Windows) so try this and let me know how you get on. Ben via email asks: Hello Aunty, can you help me please? I want to get Windows Defender up and running on my Windows 10 laptop but every time I try, I get a message that “this application is turned off”. I have followed your previous instructions and also the online help websites but I can’t seem to get it to behave. I am using the free Avast and Malwarebytes so could this be preventing me from using Windows Defender and do you think that Defender would be better than the other two programmes? Any help would be
Technology
very much appreciate. Aunty Says: Hi Ben. Yes Avast will be stopping Windows Defender from running and you can easily uninstall it from Add/remove programs (type PROGRAMS into the Windows search box) Microsoft’s Windows Defender is perfectly adequate as your antivirus program, but also keep on using Malwarebytes as the two apps target different kinds of infections.
Maria via email asks: Hi Aunty, I have an old Dell laptop with Window Vista and i keep getting a Low Disc Space message each time I start the laptop. I have done the recommended disk clean up procedure but it makes no difference. I have uninstalled any unwanted programs and I now only have 12 programs installed. I have copied all photos etc to a USB stick as and files. Also I cannot uninstall
59
the yahoo browser and replace with Google Chrome. Your advice would be appreciated. Aunty Says: I think it is time to splash out on a new laptop Maria. This problem could take forever to fix and will probably reoccur plus Windows Vista has long been discontinued, and using it presents all kinds of security risks. Vince from La Zenia asks: Hi Aunty, I have a 2 year old Samsung laptop and I am having an annoying problem with it shutting down for no apparent reason and I have to restart it again with the on/off button. It will often go into a Windows automatic repair which can take 20 minutes to complete. Aunty Says: Hello Vince. Normally when a laptop consistently switches off this is a sign it is overheating or there is a hardware problem. Try blowing any dust & fluff from the air vents underneath and around the sides and also try propping the back up slightly so cool air can flow underneath. If your problem happens randomly then maybe also check you don’t have a loose connection where the power charger is plugged in. Keep me posted. Any questions you can email me at auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and hopefully see you all next week.

New Rules for Pickup Trucks Owners of pickup vehicles may need to be aware that new rules came into force in Spain recently. In particular, the pickup with a maximum mass not more than 3.500 kg and whose seating position and loading area are not located in a single compartment and whose total height does not exceed 2M, shall be governed by the same rules of movement as passenger vehicles. The full text of the regulation change details how within the dynamism and evolution of the automobile market, new bodies and configurations have emerged that adapt vehicles to specificdemands. Amongst these new bodies, introduced some time ago in the market, was the configuration known commonly as a pickup. Pickup vehicles are characterised, in the main, as being a vehicle that has an area on its body where merchandise can be carried, normally in an open top area. Due to this particularity, and in the absence of a proper
classification for this type of vehicle within the definitions of the Reglamento General de Vehículos(General Regulations of Vehicles), pickup vehicles have been classified up to now as a type of commercial vehicle. In this respect, the definition of a truck in the Reglamento General de Vehículosindicates that it is a
vehicle with four wheels or more, designed and constructed for the carriage of goods, the cab is not integrated in the rest of the bodywork and with a maximum of 9 seats, including the driver. Now, within the definition of the vehicle as a pickup, it is defined in the scope of the directive as: A vehicle whose maximum mass is not more than 3,500 kg, where the seating positions and the loading area are
not located in a single compartment. From a technical point of view, the configuration, use and performance of a pickup vehicle are within the realm of those of a passenger vehicle and not those of acommercial vehicle. This circumstance brings with it certain dysfunctions derived from the direct application to vehicle types and the rules of circulation of commercial vehicles. Therefore, pickup vehicles with a maximum mass not exceeding 3,500 kg, where the seating positions and the loading area are not located in a single compartment and whose total height is not more than 2metres, will be governed by the same rules of circulation applied to passenger vehicles. To facilitate their identification and control, a specific field will be enabled in the Vehicle Register for pickup vehicles. The above does not affect in any case any other obligations (fiscal, periodicity of ITVs, etc), that can be derived from its formal classification as a commercial vehicle by criteria of construction in the Vehicle Registry. Celts Club de Golf CD Montesinos 0 - UD Horadada 3 Yet another year has passed and last Saturday we celebrated our Presidents- Day at our home course of La Serena. The conditions were ideal for golf, with a gentle breeze taking the edge of the higher than normal temperatures. I would like to thank again the hard- working green-keeping staff under the guidance of Wayne the head green keeper, for the fine condition of the course. There has been a significant investment on course maintenance and the results are there for all to see. Thanks is due to the clubhouse staff of, Jean, Paul and Jose who looked after all our needs and Ginis and Gloria in the bar, we were set for a great day of golf. It was a bright and early start and Camillus and Philip have to be congratulated for their organisational skills and juggling of all the request from a field of 88 players. Denis and Terry, also helped out the team on the day getting the players to the tee at the appropriate times. With the days golf finished we adjourned to El Prado restaurant in San Miguel de Salinas for the presentation of prizes and our traditional Presidents’ dinner. I would like to thank all those who attended the evening and lent their support to our Club and the junta directiva. We had over 90
people seated and all were delighted with the service and the fayre on offer. Music and entertainment was provided by Steve Clarke who battled through the evening with a wisdom tooth giving him grief. Down to the results on the day; NTP's were won by Kevin McBride, Colin Soones, Kevin Fitzpatrick, Peter Dunne, Tony Woodward and Steve Hopkins. Our visitors’ prize went to Andrew Trefry 72. Nearest the 11th line Pat Coyne. Category IV John Coholan 72, Michael Hooke 73 and Kevin McBride 73. Category III, Savi Nayager 73, Kevin Fitzpatrick 74 and Logan Nayager 74. Category II, Patrick Coyne 71, Harry Lee 71 and Geoff Ellender 75. Category I, Colin Soones 71, John O’Brien 75 and Terry Fitzgerald 76. Gross on
the day Camillus Fitzpatrick 80. Second over-all went to Sheila Coyne on 70 and the winner of the Presidents’ Prize Denis McCormack also on 70. Congratulations to all the winners and to those who participated on the day. On a personal level I would like to thank all those who attended the dinner and helped contribute to a fantastic evening. While golf is what brings us together, it is the social aspect of our club that sets The Celts apart. We always welcome new members and guests and if you would like to play in one of our Open Days why not give me a call? Monte came into this game, midtable, against the unbeaten league leaders, but Monte were not fazed in any way. Monte were straight on the attack, and winning numerous balls midfield. The vast majority of play in the first half was in the Horadada half of the field. Monte’s main target man for the long ball was Manu Sanchez, who made some good long runs and passes into the centre. Maccan was all over the field marshalling his players, continually dribbling the ball between 3 or more Horadada players. Horadada goalie saved shots from Dani Saez, on 9minutes, another shot from him went wide on 11minutes, and Guirao put the ball over the bar on 16minutes, Carlos Ventura tried to place the ball in the net on 21 minutes, but was saved, Vaz hit the post on 25 minutes following a great run through their defence, then on 40 minutes Guirao once again shot wide. At half time the score was 0 – 0, but Monte should have been well ahead. The second half started exactly the same, with Monte on top. In the first minute Luis was brought down in the box, but no
penalty given. Then on 59 minutes against the run of player, a Horadada goal came from a loping shot over Dani’s head, he possibly blinded by the setting sun. Horadada’s second goal came on 70 minutes with a final goal 3 minutes into extra time. Throughout the game, Horadada picked up numerous yellow cards for fouls, but the expected red card didn’t happen. On this showing, Monte should have no fear of their oppositions, they played extremely well, the scoreline not justified. Match played in
front of a large crowd of 375. Maccan was judged to be Man of the Match. CD Montesinos have signed two new players. Right wing player, Francisco Javier Perez Sanchez, to be known as Javi, signed from Torrevieja. And midfielder Jaime Pastor Jimenez, known as Pastor, signed from Catral Team:- Dani, Alex, Bachir, Guirao, Man Sanchez, Luis, Carlos Ventura, Vaz, Dani Saez, Dimitry, Maccan. Subs:- Aitor, Fernando, Pastor, Dario, German.

Arcos Fishing Festival On Friday 6th October 23 anglers from Abbey anglers and Rod & Reels made up of anglers from The UK, France and Holland visited the famous Embalse at Arcos De La Frontera, near to Seville, for a five day fishing festival. We stopped at the Hotel Meson De la Molinare situated on the banks of the lake in bungalows adjacent to the Hotel. The lake is heavily stocked with Carp and Barbel and access is situated at the side of the hotel. The area is a haven for water sport enthusiasts, with canoes,
water skiing, water boarding and lots of other water based activities. The festival took the format of a daily pairs competition along with daily section prizes and an overall competition based on weight. Day 1. Saw Brad Cannon take the honours with over 28kg of fish mainly carp on pellet with Lenny Bolton finishing second using corn on the feeder and Doug Hornblow took 3rd. Day 2 saw a comeback from the
reliable Doug Hornblow with Bradley Cannon taking second and myself scraping into third place . Day 3 was a rest day in the festival but we had a normal 1 day match and again a pairs competition. Brad Cannon again came out on top using his favourite method of a slow sinking feeder on the tip fishing pellet, followed closely behind by Doug Hornblow and the usually reliable Terry Screen came into the picture finishing third and used paste Day 4. Brad Cannon was again the
winner with his father after taking some advice from his once protégée taking 2nd and Lenny Bolton was 3rd. The fifth and final day was a straight matchup between Brad Cannon and the former Welsh international Doug Hornblow to take the overall festival. What made it more appealing was they were drawn together. After a very close encounter and with Brad losing a big barbel during the match, the old-stager Doug took the honours from the young pretender Brad. Brads father Bill Cannon
took the overall on the day. Overall This really was a great festival. Many thanks go out to Bill Reade who did a great job in organising the week’s events. He was assisted by Alice Shipley who assisted with the draws and admin, Lenny Bolton who sorted prizes etc, Terry Screen who sorted out all the scales and myself who produced all the results. Your Week in Sport – by Chris Darwen ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com
A lot of Shakespeare’s work has the character known for deceit, backstabbing, double-crossing and being a bit of a half-wit killed off in the denouement. Leicester City’s board are clearly fans of the historic playwright and finally brought the curtain down on the character involved in deceit, backstabbing and double-crossing by sacking their very own Shakespeare. Personally, I felt October was a little late as I had him down for leaving on a Midsummer’s Night, but that turned out to be a dream of mine. Shakey is now Bard from the King Power (which in itself sounds like a character name). He is believed to have taken the news almost as badly as Richard Keys, giving the board a Roundhouse kick to the Globe(s). Puns aside, albeit briefly, people might feel it is a little harsh on Craig Shakespeare considering their fixture list at the start of the season and the fact they have not been outclassed at any point. But then, the very same people can cast their minds back to the fact that the board also kicked out the man that won them the league after a similar length of time the following season, and the man that saved them from relegation the season before that. You could almost argue they know what they are doing, even if they are yet to convince Lord Lineker of Leicestershire. The usual faces are now being linked to the post. In no particular order, Carlo Ancelotti, Roberto Mancini, Alan Pardew, Sam Allardyce, Martin O’Neill, Chris Coleman and, er, Sean Dyche will have better odds than Tales’ very own Alan Curbishley who is expected to be 16/1. It turns out Liverpool were playing a very clever game on Saturday against Manchester United, who themselves it turns out were showcasing their new “bus partner” MegaBus with their
tactical approach to the game. Liverpool were saving up their goals for last night’s trip to Maribor who saw the ball enter their net 7 (seven) times. No English team has been to Maribor and done that apparently, which is a classic example of how Liverpool roll. 2-0 would have done gents, and beating Maribor by seven doesn’t get you any closer to solving the conundrum of defending set-plays or beating teams that sit very deep against you. Harry Kane will have pretty much sealed the deal with his performance at the Bernabeu. The striker may not have scored the goal himself, but he definitely put Varane off. However, it was Hugo Lloris that may have well leap-frogged the Tottenham goalgetter to the top of Madrid’s shopping list with his performance. Cristiano Ronaldo has already demanded that
Zinedine Zidane find a new man between the sticks and Hugo was on his shortlist. Watch it happen, watch it happen. Serge Aurier continued his incredibly scattergun approach to life in a white shirt by conceding the penalty from which Ronaldo scored his 2056th goal for Real. Elsewhere, Manchester City did

what they needed to do early against Serie A pacesetters Napoli. Gabby Jesus and Raheem Sterling both scored again before City thought it might be appropriate to practice some proper defending as they’ve not had to do a great deal in the Premier League and, well, Stoke City don’t count. Ederson saved a penalty and City held on for a 2-1 win, meaning their route to the next round looks pretty simple. That noise you can hear on the other side of Manchester is Jose Mourinho performing one bad boy of a U-turn. With Jose now claiming that the only future in football is “tomorrow” and that he is now NOT prepared to commit to signing a new deal it is easy to believe that yesterday’s “slip it into the press” tactic that he “deserves” a bumper pay rise to “commit longterm” has backfired somewhat. I would love to think that
United accepted that they needed to sacrifice their principles briefly to bring in Mourinho to sort out the shithouse that Moyes and Van Gaal had left, before binning him off in 2019 and bringing in someone just a touch more adventurous. If that happens, I take back every single word I have ever said about Ed Woodward.
SAMM Members Party at Caldero Day Thursday October 12th is the Hispanic Day public holiday in Spain and is also celebrated in Los Alcazares as Caldero Day, the date Los Alcazares became an independent municipality in 1983. Over 100 peñas (clubs and associations) plus many family and friends groups gather on the beach to eat, drink and be merry and there is the smell of charcoal burning for paellas and bar-bq’s, music blasting out, singing and laughter as people party from early morning till late in the evening along the length of the paseo. For several years SAMM has joined this gathering and, of late, had a theme for the day to allow the extroverts to dress up and make fools of themselves. This year the theme was the Rocky Horror Show and over 20 people arrived in costume, including the past and present Commodore, to close the paseo every hour on the hour and perform the Time Warp dance routine to much applause from the passersby who could not pass by.
Many other sensibly dressed members came and went throughout the day so the SAMM section of the beach was crowded with up to 50 or 60 people most of the time. SAMM funds were used to provide wine, beer, soft drinks nuts and nibbles for all and the Balaton Group provided bratwurst sausages and onions, cooked by Colin Finch, with bread and mustard free to their group members. Jack Moss and others offered trips round the bay in one of the Shoestring Groups Gamba dinghies and there were many takers. Julian Pering also bought his beach version of the air ball game that had proved so popular last year where teams of six each with a goal keeper, complete in a knockout competition. Great foolishness and fun for both competitors and spectators. We can’t wait for next year, wonder what the new theme will be?

La Siesta Bowls Club By Rod Edgerton The Apollos had a home match to start their campaign in the Enterprise Division against La Marina Explorers and they had lift off with a 12-2 victory by 110 shots to 79.Best winning rink was that of Dave Davies with Florence and Mike Edwards winning 25-12.This was closely followed by Ramsay Sinclair, Brian Gardiner and Alex Morrice who won 21-9. The other three winning rinks were much closer affairs the biggest margin being achieved by Dawn and John Taylor with Brian Fraser winning 18-14. The Pioneers followed the Apollos on to the rink in the Voyager Division against Horadada Falcons and did not having quite such a good start losing by 96 shots to 112 thereby gaining 5 points to their opponents 9.Hilary Clark with Trish Reilly and Vic Mahomet had the best win by 20 shots to 11 whilst Sheila Millward, Derek
Smith and John Clark came home by the narrowest of margins by a single shot. The final point was gained by Sue Mahomet, Teteyana Oliver and Pat Reilly who managed to tie their match. Our Winter League game played their first home fixture following last week’s impressive start to the season but on this occasion the visitors Javea Green proved just too strong winning by 85 shots to 67 getting 8 points to La Siesta’s 4.Pat and Trish Reilly with Mike and Florence Edward s were our biggest winning rink by 17 shots to 11.A great turnaround on the Joy Gardiner, Jim Hudson. Dave Blackie and Jean Cooper rink who early on were nine shots adrift but pulled things around to win 18-16. The Blues travelled to San Luis to play the Tigers and came away with an excellent 11-3 victory by 124 shots to
100.Three of our six rinks all won by a margin of 9 shots with Dawn Taylor, John Taylor with Brian Harman winning by that margin as did Ann Heath,Robert Heath and John Ball and not to be outdone Sheila Chorley with Bill and Sue Jordan did the same. An exciting finish on the rink of Pat Moore, Dave Blackie and George Richardson sharing the spoils with their opponents. The Golds turned around there form from the opening week and had a 12-2 victory at home to Montemar Torreadors by 120 shots to 92.Three rinks won by wide margins the best being Hilary Clarke, Derek Smith and Pat Reilly by 34 shots to 17.Barbara Cooper,Trish Reilly won by 23 shots to 12 and Penny Porter, Alan Ralph and Johnnie Ryder won 21-12.

Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com
This weekend’s matches were full of SHOCK and HORROR which only tells me that the farce that is Halloween must be nearing us. SHOCK HORROR! Manchester City won’t win every game 5-0 or 7-2 this season. Burnley, completely uncharacteristically, made life a little difficult for Pep’s free flowing artists and City even had to resort to scoring a headed goal from a set-piece. Sergio Aguero’s penalty made him the joint record scorer in the club’s history and Kevin de Bruyne did what Kevin de Bruyne has been doing a lot of recently and assisted a goal beautifully. SHOCK HORROR! Jose Mourinho blames players for losing a football match. EVEN MORE SHOCK HORROR! Jose Mourinho praises the opponent for winning said football match! Little Huddersfield Town bashed up big strong Manchester United 2-1 in a result so surprising that Mourinho wasn’t really sure which excuse to use. Jose was motivated. Jose was prepared. Jose’s desire was 100%. Jose did his bit. It was just that eleven on the pitch that let him down. Another thing regarding Jose, surely £31m gets you a complete central defender, even in this day and age? I’m not going all Paul Merson or Ray Wilkins, but is there any universe in which Victor Lindelof is a better fit for the Premier League than Timothy Fosu-Mensah or Axel Tuanzebe? Huddersfield’s second
was about as Sunday League as you can get (a whole day early) and any Sunday League defender letting that ball bounce would have got an absolute rollocking from his manager. But of course, clubs have to keep these agents happy by moving their commodities across the world, right? SHOCK HORROR! Antonio Conte is NOT fearing the sack. Well, you wouldn’t would you if you were secretly plotting to head back to Italy at the first available opportunity. Chelsea came from behind to beat an impressive Watford side. The match gave Chelsea fans online the opportunity to show their tactical acumen once more. Twitter went into idiot overdrive when Conte took over Alvaro Morata (club record signing and top goalscorer) when 2-1 down on Saturday, especially when he was being replaced by Michy Batshuayi. How dare Conte consider the fact that Morata had just come back from injury? And the abuse that came the Italian’s way for bringing on Willian was online football “fandom” at it’s peak. Chelsea were 2-1 down when these two entered the field and won 4-2. Who scored? Michy got two. Who had a huge hand in all three goals? Willian. Funnily enough, Antonio won’t be changing his tactical plans next week because @gazza454 thinks that he is a clueless fraud who should leave HIS club immediately. Thanks for your input Gaz. As for Watford’s Richarlison, was that a case of karma catching up with him a week later, as he missed two gilt-edged chances to put the game out Chelsea’s reach? Probably not, it was a penalty against Arsenal all day long.
SHOCK HORROR! It only took four minutes for me to begin penning chapter 138 of “Liverpool cannot defend for toffee” as the sight of Harry Kane scoring early reminded Dejan Lovren who Kloppo had suggested marking. The chapter became a lot longer shortly after when Dejan failed to locate Tottenham’s main man yet again. The Croat was subbed after 26 minutes at Wembley having put in one of the worst displays at “The Home of Football” since, well, last time Spurs stank the place out. The problem is though, it’s not all Dejan’s fault. It says a lot when Alberto Moreno has been your best defender for the last few weeks. Leo Messi may have perfected the “false nine” role, but Liverpool are getting the false 1-5 pretty much sorted too. I wonder if Jose still thinks his approach last weekend was the best way to play Liverpool? Arsenal fans are cute, aren’t they? They still believe that Jack Wilshere is the future of the club judging by the reception they gave him at Goodison Park. All this because he didn’t look terrible against Red Star Belgrade. People are even talking about him being in England’s World Cup squad next summer. Do me a favour, Theo Walcott has got more chance. Actually no, Alexis Sanchez has got more chance of playing for Southgate than Jack. Anyway, Arsenal delivered Arsene a nice birthday present by stuffing a woeful Everton 5-2, even if they did manage to concede to Wayne Rooney and let Everton score a hilarious injury time consolation. In fact, I’d say that Jack Wilshere has more chance of playing in the World Cup than Ronald Koeman
has of getting that dream job at Barcelona. You know it’s not the job for you when Mesut Ozil scores a header against you. Things are so bad at Everton that people are talking up a dream return for David Moyes? Who’s dream is that I wonder? Moysey wants to make Scotland worse, anyway. There appears to be a default template at the King Power Stadium for every time Leicester City sack their manager. The “caretaker” goes 442, picks Okazaki and tells Mahrez he is the best in the world and Leicester win. Simple! The former champions beat Swansea City 2-1 giving Michael Appleton absolutely zero chance of replacing Craig Shakespeare permanently. Why not? Because, that’s why. There’s also a default template in place at West Ham United it would seem. Slaven Bilic gets all his players and staff in the changing room and there is a big hat in the middle of them all. In that hat are various formations, like 433 or 442 for example. Bilic gets a player at random to pull out a formation, and that is how they will play at the weekend. Slaven then puts the entire squad in the hat and pulls out a team one at a time. It almost sounds plausible, doesn’t it? West Ham played Brighton on Friday night. Sorry, West Ham were scheduled to play Brighton on Friday night and in the end it was only Brighton that showed up, getting the standard 3-0 win for an opposition no-show. West Ham are going down, I am saying it here and now. All the outrage about playing Javier Hernandez down the right or left and not down the middle all becomes totally
irrelevant when your team isn’t anywhere near good enough to get him the ball anyway. Hell, even Sunderland managed to pass to Defoe a few times last season. All the West Ham fans that hounded Sam Allardyce out should hang their heads in shame because they wouldn’t be this bad under him. You don’t get many goals at St Mary’s anymore, but Boufal’s was half decent in their 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion. Boufal picked the ball up in his own half, dribbled past most of the Albion side before getting into their area and netting. Only Matt Le Tissier has scored finer goals for Southampton and if Messi had scored that then the world would be bleating on about it until Ronaldo did something interesting. Stoke City, another of my tips for relegation although I do seem to be saying six teams are going down, are now in the bottom three after losing to AFC Bournemouth who are now out of the bottom three. Finally, what was the point of beating Chelsea if you then go and lose to Newcastle United, eh Palace? The answer is no point at all. If Newcastle keep this up, there is every chance that Mike Ashley might actually be selling a club in the right half of the Premier League which is more than they were when he bought them. Still, the Geordies will still give him a fond farewell. I leave you today with a simple question. Which of these are the most laughably bad of deals? Alex OxladeChamberlain, Victor Lindelof, Marko Arnautovic or Gylfi Sigurdsson? At least two of them are going to cost someone their job.
