RESIDENTS AT BREAKING POINT OVER N332 The people of Torrevieja, residents, tourists and visitors alike, can’t take much more of the congestion on the N332.
N
ow a petition has been launched on Change.org demanding that something be done about the daily delays that are bringing the town to a standstill. It is the mayor of Torrevieja himself, José Manuel Dolón, who is asking people to sign; a rather bizarre situation but a last resort when national government seems to be taking no
notice of the local government’s plea. So far there are 1,588 signatures at the last time of accessing the site. On the petition site it states: The national road N332 is the main channel of communication linking Torrevieja, a city with 90,000 on the padrón, with regions of Valencia and Murcia. During holiday periods and at festival times this number rises to half a million. The road is a dual carriageway with two lanes until you get to Torrevieja where it converts into a bottleneck with thousands of vehicles caught in a daily traffic jam. The project to double its size through the town has been included in the general state budget since 2015
without it being put into operation. As mayor of Torrevieja, I ask you to sign the petition because: • This is a black spot on our roads that has already taken several lives • Drivers must wait in long queues and experience tail backs • It damages the reputation of the town which is often in the national news • It is a financial liability as it makes trade difficult with the rest of the Vega Baja • It prevents quick access to Torrevieja hospital Above all, as mayor of the town, I have asked for the help of institutions, associations and individuals in order to resolve this desperate situation for the town’s people, tourists and the social and
economic health of the area. I ask that you sign up to this cause so that the Ministry of Public Works puts into place the widening of the road as is indicated in the budget. If you agree with the mayor and would like to sign the petition then you can do so by: • Going on to the site https://www.change.org • Finding the magnifying glass at the top and clicking • Entering a search for CN 332 • Completing a few basic details including name, surname, email address and postal code • Clicking on ‘firma’ displayed on a red rectangle
It’s as easy as that. In this paper we have been publishing over the past few months the attempts of the local government to get their request heard. They had even proposed putting up banners in key places on the road to advertise their frustration with the lack of action. However, their application to do this was, unsurprisingly, turned down. The mayor has also invited the relevant Minister to visit Torrevieja to see the problem for himself. It seems unbelievable that such steps are necessary to draw attention to such an obvious problem that not only causes huge inconvenience but costs lives too. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Nearly 700 incidents NEWS: in July on the It’s August and we can begin to count the cost of the summer season when it comes to lifeguard activity. During July there were a total of 1,116 lifeguard interventions that included those that needed urgent medical help for a heart attack to 56 rescues from the sea. Councillor for beaches, Javier Manzanares, noted that there were 406 people with injuries of different kinds requiring treatment. Jelly fish stings accounted for 360 of these and 46 were for insect bites. Sunburn has also been a problem this year more than ever with lifeguards attending to 22 cases. The day when most incidents took place was the 30th July when there were 66 interventions and the least, with around 10 each day, were on the 5th and 7th July. Councillor Manzanares was pleased to announce that, ‘during the month of July no one died on the beaches of Torrevieja.’
beaches of Orihuela The Councillor for Beaches Luisa Boné has reported the number of incidents that required assistance from Ambumar, company in charge of Life Guards and support services on the beaches of Orihuela, during the month of July. The majority of the incidents are connected to health or to the rescue of swimmers. Ambumar has 40 people, including lifeguards, nurses and drivers to
scrapes and even those who have been spiked by hedgehogs (33). The service has only made 11 rescues, of which 7 have been in at Cala Capitan where bathers try to swim to the Isla del Carmen and back. The rest of the rescues have been carried out at Cala Bosque (1), Cala Cerrada (2) and Cala Estaca (1). The beach that has generated the most incidents has been Cala Bosque

Children from the Sahara Every year Torrevieja plays host to a group of Saharan children who spend part of the summer here to escape the harsh conditions in which they normally live. The programme ‘Vacaciones en Paz’ or ‘Holidays in peace’ is supported by families who offer to take the children in during the summer. The children participating this year were greeted by the mayor, José Manuel Dolón, and were presented with some school equipment for them to use. BITE SIZE NEWS:
Salt work visits off to a good start
which have contributed to current difficulties for the people who live there. For those families who play host to the children, they have quite a task in terms of supporting them with their different culture, language and the fact that they are away from their parents. This year ten children have participated in the scheme and the town hall are asking for more volunteers in future. During their time in Spain the children take part in summer schools and receive medical care.
Market day at the church The Chaplaincy of St. Peter & St. Paul, Torrevieja are holding their market day on Wednesday 6th September from 11am to 3pm. The market will take place at Lago Jardin Pool Bar which is close to Lago Jardin Church. You can find the location of the church on the Chaplaincy website: www.c-of-e-torrevieja.com/wp/lagojardin-church/. There will be a number of stalls available including those selling bags, shoes, sandals, cakes, fashion items, jewellery, wooden carvings and there will be a tombola. High quality refreshments will be available throughout the day at the Lago Jardin Pool Bar. This is a fund raising event and everyone is welcome.
False goods seized False goods have been seized that total €77,000 in value by the Grupo de Refuerzo Operativo (GRO) of the Local Police. Most of the campaign to cut down on illegal trade has focussed around the paseos in Torrevieja where traditionally the goods are laid out. Around 3,500 products have been seized altogether during this operation which has taken place in conjunction with the Guardia Civil. The illegal goods trade in Torrevieja is operated by mafias and it is hoped that campaigns such as this will come as a severe blow to them. Goods have also been seized as a result of vehicle stop and search activity with four people arrested in connection with this. Illegal tobacco has also been seized in entertainment areas of the city such as on Paseo Juan Aparicio and from 24 hour shops. Altogether four kilos of tobacco and 150 packs of tobacco have been taken.
Snow exhibition Perhaps what everyone needs at the moment is to gaze at some pictures of snow. The 18th January will go down in history for Torrevieja as the day in most recent history when snow fell on La Mata and Torrevieja. On that day everyone was out taking photos and now there is opportunity to see an exhibition of some of these in the Centro Polivalente de la Mata from the 12th to the 31st August. Altogether there are more than 80 photographs that come from a number of different sources including Proyecto Mastral and El Tiempo en Torrevieja as well as others. It includes pictures of the Continued on page 6
How much do you know about Torrevieja’s salt industry? It still comes as a surprise to some people that it has one at all. But the town council are keen to broaden the tourist appeal of Torrevieja and create a sustainable tourist industry. Promoting aspects of the town such as its salt works, is part of that campaign. Councillor Fanny Serrano is a keen advocate of ensuring that Torrevieja is recognised for the full variety of its features and not just its beaches. The salt works are one aspect of the town that deserves greater recognition. In light of this, they
taking salt out to the ships. All those attending were given some table salt to take home with them and were asked to complete a survey. The new packaging emphasises that the salt mining is part of the natural lakes of La Mata and Torrevieja. Sue Delamare was one of the lucky people who was able to take part in the trip; ‘I attended the free visit to Torrevieja Salinas on Thursday. We boarded the bus at 10am and were shown a video in Spanish of the history of the Salinas. Juan from the tourist office had assured us that if we didn’t understand everything he would explain
The lucky people taking part in one of the trips
have run two pilot visits to the salt works with a view to making this a regular event. The first trip took place on 3rd August and the second on the 10th August. The trip was free and Councillor Serrano personally presided. ‘There’s been a lot of demand,’ explained the councillor. ‘We are sorry that not everyone who expressed an interest was able to take part. The truth is that we filled the 110 places in less than two days.’
Fanny Serrano speaks to local TV
Those who were lucky enough to get a place on the trip were collected by bus from the Eras de la Sal. They were accompanied by guides from the tourist office in Torrevieja and during the trip they were shown a video that explained about the tradition and history associated with salt mining in Torrevieja. This was followed by an itinerary that concluded with a visit to the salt mountains by the pink lake. Here they had prepared a small salt mountain for people to approach so that they could touch the salt. It was a busy day with the works in operation. People could see the salt belt
and answer any questions we had later in the visit. We were driven into the Salinas where one of the employees explained to us the procedures for processing the salt. We were then allowed off the bus to take pictures.’ The pilot trip wasn’t exactly like it is intended to run the tours in the future. For example it is planned that the tour will use the tourist train rather than a bus. However,
An opportunity to see the salt up close for those taking part it was a great opportunity to see close up what is usually viewed from a distance. It is hoped that the trips will resume again in March and April next year. This time they will not be free but they will be set at a reasonable price that people can afford. For Sue, the trip was well worthwhile and she would encourage others to take part when they hopefully begin again. ‘I found it a very interesting visit,’ says Sue. ‘One of the other visitors was a Spanish man who had retired 18 years ago and worked all his life at the Salinas!’ Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Scientists warn of e-cigarette exposure NEWS: E-cigs expose users and those around them to harmful toxins, scientists have warned. A study found heavy use of the cigarette substitutes could lead to inhaled levels of chemicals which exceed set exposure limits. They include recognised carcinogen formaldehyde, acrolein – a toxin and irritant to the eyes, skin and nose – and diacetyl, which can cause breathing problems. Dr Hugo Destaillats, from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, set up a study to find how
much of these compounds users and others might inhale. Destaillats said: “Vapers’ intake of toxic compounds was modelled for scenarios in which different e-liquids were used with various vapourisers, battery power settings and vaping regimes.” Users inhaling at 250 puffs per day could inhale up to 10mg of acrolein a day, 49mg of formaldehyde and 0.5mg of diacetyl, far above US limits. But the study found vapers would still lose far fewer years from their life than tobacco smokers.
MYSTERY OF ALICANTE WHEELIEBIN SKULL SOLVED A horrified homeless man who found a human skull whilst sifting through a wheelie-bin sparked a murder inquiry in Alicante last week. However, the person who put it there has come forward and confessed to police. The young man went to the station voluntarily after reading about the skull in the news to explain what had happened. He turned out to be a medical student at Alicante University who had been
studying the skull for a science project. The undergraduate was able to show paperwork revealing he had permission from the faculty and also from the city council to be in possession of human remains for research purposes, and to dispose of them when they were no longer needed. “We can confirm there are no signs of criminal activity in this case, which has now been closed,” the National Police stated.
beaches, the natural park, and the Dique de Levante all covered in snow. Entry is free.
La Ballena has a reprieve The abandoned and dilapidated building known as La Ballena in the centre of Torrevieja on calle Pedro Lorca is not to be demolished just yet, it emerges. Technicians have revealed that there are complications with the demolition firm who had been awarded the contract. Apparently they do not have the necessary financial stability required. As a result the contract will go to the firm that came in in second place, but this will have to be after August now. Councillor Fanny Serrano expressed her disappointment. The building, which was constructed in the sixties has been declared a ruin since 2006.
Want to see how much they’re paid? It’s on the web In a bid to ensure transparency, Torrevieja town hall has published the income of their councillors on the town’s website as well as their travel expenses. The figures that are published are the gross income before tax and are not the complete income for some members of the council. Some councillors also receive money for other roles that they take, for example as councillors for Alicante Province. This is particularly the case for an opposition councillor who maintains a dual role. Some of those listed are also able to claim for attendance as well as their basic salary. The mayor has published the figures in order to prevent the speculation and mud slinging that has taken place at times over how much everyone earns. Suzanne O’Connell
Gang arrested for trafficking marijuana from Alicante The Guardia Civil in Alicante has detained eight people and placed a ninth under investigation, for growing marijuana, drug trafficking, belonging to a criminal organisation, and fraudulent power supply. The arrests came in Alicante, Elche, Playa de San Juan, Jijona, Penáguila and Onil. Those detained are seven men: one Serbian (aged 35) one from Bosnia Herzegovina (33) five Croatians (aged between 27 and 41) and one Spanish woman (46). Another Serbian woman (38) is under investigation. Citizen collaboration was essential in the development of this complicated operation which the Guardia Civil began a year ago, and ended with the dismantling of the gang. These people were dedicated to the cultivation and trafficking drugs and could have been operating in Alicante province for several years. Anonymous tip offs from members of the public across several localities, led the agents to open diverse investigations, which also started simultaneously in Onil and Ibi. One the first focuses of the investigation was summer home in Onil,
separated from the village and only accessible by SUV and large vans, which was noted to be visited regularly. When the officers entered this rural property, the place was empty, but on the first floor they discovered a marijuana plantation with nearly 300 mature plants, and more than 20 kilograms of buds, ready for transport and distribution. In the house they found a range of hidden documents, which once analysed by detectives to suspect they had uncovered a well developed criminal organisation, actively producing drugs and with diverse international contacts. With this evidence and other clues, officers started to keep a close watch on several people given their assumed membership of a criminal organisation. They were surprised by the gang’s discipline and professionalism. From Eastern Europe, these people were extremely cautious, and undertook diverse tactics to complicate their monitoring by the Guardia Civil officers from Ibi. However, eventually, the detectives could exactly identify several members of the criminal organisation and the role each one was carrying out, Once all the evidence had been compiled on the suspects, including their homes, plantations and ways of behaving, the officers cautiously started to detain the leaders to ensure capture – which were three brothers of Croatian nationality.

Beach Children arrive by boat bars still closed It’s moving towards the end of the season and the three beach bars at Punta Prima remain closed. The three bars are situated between Punta Prima and Cala Piteras and have paid fees in order to use part of the public walkway. However, it turns out that they do not have permission to open at all. In spite of their popularity, the town hall continues to refuse an opening licence even though the owners maintain that they have been paying fees for eight years to place tables and chairs on the walkway. However, this has made no difference. The shutters are still down on what was a thriving little business during the summer season. The forums have been full of comments from people who have missed having these bars on their favourite beaches. Instead people have had to make other arrangements, such as bringing their own refreshments and snacks. The bars not only used to provide refreshments during the day but were also known for hosting musical activities in the evening. Councillor Fanny Serrano is clear that the bars were operating without any type of licence and as such are illegal and must not open. The huts have not got either licences for building work nor for their activities. Neither do they have authorisation from the coastal department. The next stage is likely to be that the bars must be dismantled as they are not even built on land that is considered acceptable for building or ‘urbanizable’ and therefore it may be impossible to legalise their activities at all. Councillor Serrano has explained that even though they have paid to occupy part of the walkway with chairs and tables this does not entitle them to permission to open. They must have an opening licence or ‘licencia de apertura’. The manager of two of the beach bars or chiringuitos paid €8,000 this year to place their tables and chairs on public property. However, it is believed that the money paid over the last four years can be claimed back as an improper charge. Suzanne O’Connell
The Guardia Civil is investigating the arrival of two children in a boat on the coast of Torrevieja. The boat landed in Cala Ferris and the children are believed to be of Algerian origin. The youngest of the two was suffering from hypothermia and they were both later taken to hospital. The children, who are believed to be 14 and 16 years old, handed themselves in to the local police early on Monday morning asking for help. They had arrived in a boat which was later found abandoned in Cala Ferris. It is believed that the boat could be linked to the other six boats which were intercepted last weekend off the coast of Murcia. The children arrived without any documentation and were wet and covered in sand. The police activated procedures for this kind of situation through alerting 112 and so mobilising help from Maritime Rescue and Cruz Roja. In the meantime the humanitarian
organisation set up a rescue team of six professionals, including two health workers who were assisted by a translator. Cruz Rojo provided basic health checks and clothing as the children were cold and wet. The boys were later taken to hospital where they were given an examination to check on their general state of health and also to verify their age through tests. Other than the hypothermia of the youngest it is believed that their health is generally stable. The area where the boat landed was in a part of Cala Ferris that is difficult to access on foot. The boat was around three metres in length and contained a number of bottles. It is not yet known if other people had also been travelling in the boat. There have been a number of arrivals in this way recently with the current total being set at around 65 people. Suzanne O’Connell

Help for Tasha needed urgently The Costa Blanca People has been supporting fundraising for the Tasha Appeal since the 24 year old was struck down by disease two years ago and we recently launched the ‘Give €1 – save a life’ campaign. This aims to raise 200k to get Tasha specialist treatment for her rare mitochondrial disease in the US. But now that fundraising has become vital. Last week Tasha’s heart stopped and her terrified father Andy had to watch as a crash team worked frantically to save her. No parent should ever go through that and Tasha now needs that treatment and fast. Over the last 2 years Tasha’s life has been devastated by these rare life changing illnesses – the mitochondrial being the primary disease but complicated by other rare secondary illnesses. She has gone from being the life and soul of the community, to fighting the biggest battle anyone of us could ever face – the battle for life. Since her diagnosis the family has discovered information from a research hospital in America about a treatment of specialist tailored medication that could improve quality of life and possibly extend Tasha’s life expectancy. However, due to the treatment being tailor made for the patient, it is very expensive – please give now to Tasha Appeal. The disease has struck Tasha in such a devastating way that she is currently paralysed from the waist down, unable to breath unaided and relies on a ventilator and tracheotomy. She is unable to swallow, and is fed through a tube. Blind in her left eye and light sensitive in her right eye,
Tasha is even unable to support her own head unaided. But with your help, she could possibly be given a new, better and longer life. Spain leads Eurozone out of recession
Port plans favour water sports
The Eurozone is officially now out of its long-running financial crisis a decade after the first signs of recession began to bite, and is growing rapidly and consistently, according to official statistics. Now Greece is recovering and Spain's economy is growing again – albeit the job market and family finances still have a long way to catch up – economic recuperation in the 19 countries which use the common currency is, as a bloc, on the up again at last. Eurostat figures say year-on-year growth stands at 2.1 percent, with the economy increasing at 0.5 percent in the first quarter of 2017 and 0.6 percent in the second quarter. Jobless figures in the 19 nations are said to be at their 'lowest-ever' since the continent's real nose-dive in 2009. And the International Monetary Fund (FMI) has already reported that Italy, Germany, France and Spain are doing better than they had originally believed. The downside to this is that the European Central Bank (BCE) may now review its monetary policies, since growth has been fuelled by bond purchases and rock-bottom interest rates. And low interest rates mean mortgages in the Eurozone have been at their lowest-ever in the last five or six years – a huge help to improving the health of household finance. The ECB could begin to make major monetary policy decisions as early as this autumn, although at present inflation is
Plans revealed by the Generalitat Valenciana or regional government, include an expansion of the water sports facilities of the town’s ports at the expense of fishing activity. The new plans will give 86% of the frontal port site b y the Levante dam over to water sports, whereas previously it has registered at around 50%. Instead fishing activity is expected to be moved from the dique de Levante area to the dique de Poniente which is further down the coast by the beaches Los Naufragos and Acequion. The plans are not agreed yet and are currently open to public consultation. No comment has yet been made by the Fisherman’s Guild, Cofradía de Pescadores. The plans recognise that the city does have an important fishing trade that takes place currently near to the dique de Levante. In this area there is currently a fish market and warehouses that are considered to be in a dilapidated condition. The engineers who have put together the plan consider that the space taken by these buildings and this trade is not best placed considering the potential for water sports in this prime position. There is recognition that fishing activity is important to the town but there is little likelihood that it will increase due to regulations that protect specific species. In spite of this the port of Torrevieja is currently responsible for 5% of the total number of catches in the whole of the Valencian community. However, it’s suggested that too much space is currently given to this activity and the condition of the building requires a rethink of where the best position for them is. Torrevieja already has a large number of boat moorings with around 2,500 distributed between the Real Club Náutico, Marina Internacional and the Marina Salinas. Although the plans would mean a historic redistribution of activity around Torrevieja it is unlikely that any of this work will be carried out in the immediate future.
too low for any drastic interest hikes. Spain, one of the weakest Eurozone economies during the crisis, grew 0.9 percent in the second quarter of 2017 as a result of higher consumer spending and increases in exports, and making it one of the fastest-growing in the 19 commoncurrency nations. In fact, current figures from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) suggest Spain's economy is now back to where it was prior to the recession which the country began to suffer in 2008. Forecasts for Spain's growth this year sit at 1.6 percent, and it looks as though it will meet its target – exports are on the up and unemployment is down. It has gone from approximately 25 percent to 17.2 percent, although at present this is largely because of summer tourism work and jobless figures are likely to rise again in September. Also, Spain's seasonal employment, temporary job and minimum wagepaying culture continues, meaning many of the new positions created are only three or six months long and, in a high number of cases, less than a week, with long periods on the dole in between. This is particularly the case for areas which rely heavily on summer tourism for their economy, such as the east and south coast and the islands. On the Costa Blanca, roughly 99 percent of new jobs created in May or June will have been extinguished by September or October, if the pattern of the past few years continues.

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE Europe in August is never a hive of activity. The restaurants are closed for lunch and the movers and shakers are either on the beach or in the mountains. That was very much the flavour of the last week and the euro would probably have gone nowhere had it not been for the goings-on elsewhere. Apart from slightly softer investor confidence in pan-Euroland the only data were from Germany and they failed to impress: industrial production fell in June while both imports and exports were lower
on the month. The euro lost a cent to the US dollar, primarily because of two strong ecostats from the States: Nonfarm payrolls increased by more than expected and job vacancies beat forecast. Sterling lost a third of a euro cent because investors preferred the sanctuary of the euro when the unpredictable leaders of North Korea and the United States traded threats of nuclear war with one another.
Football tournament against racism Football is perhaps more often associated with racism than standing up against it. Now Torrevieja town hall are hoping to reverse the trend by holding their own mundialito or ‘world cup’ against racism on the 16th September. It is planned that eight mixed teams will take part. The tournament is not only being held to raise awareness of racism and
that is hoped to convey a very important message and denounce continuous discrimination. The teams will be mixed in order to also draw attention to gender equality in sport. Those taking part will donate two euros per player and this contribution will go towards APANEE which is the parents’ association who raise money for children with special

The tournament was announced by Councillor Victor Ferrández and is supported by the University of Alicante. The tournament will take place in the town sports’ facilities as part of the campaign ‘Torrevieja para Todas’ or ‘Torrevieja for everyone’. Councillor Ferrández states; ‘This is the first football tournament to raise awareness of the dangers of racism and xenophobia in football.’ It is an unusual event but one

Being held at the beginning of September, those taking part will not find it easy to play. They, along with their sponsors, recognise the value of an event such as this and it is hoped that more combined sporting events will take place in the future. Now would be a good time to discuss plants that grow over the surface of the ground. Grass is exceptionally hard to grow in our type of climate, so an alternative can come in many shapes and forms. Just a few of them will be mentioned here. Make sure the planting of annuals, perennials, climbers and shrubs have all been done. Do not forget to continue to deadhead your plants throughout the summer. All plants/trees need to have water around their roots often, best early in morning and late afternoon/evening. As the fruit ripens, pick it, otherwise the wasps and other insects will get to them. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, as certain wasps will actually pollinate certain fruits for example the fig. However, fruit such as avocado are better off staying on the tree until such a time as needed for eating, as they can ripen very quickly in the heat and therefore go off. Vegetables should also have been planted by now as well as fruit.
planted immediately in a shaded area. They can build strong roots in only a couple of months with no extra care or treatment given.
Campanula (Bellflower) With over 500 species it would take too much room to go in to any detail of these plants but the basics are that their flowers are bell shaped, hence the common name for them, with leaves varying in shape but broader nearer the base of the plant and narrowing nearer the top.
Dorycnium hirsutum (Hairy Canary Clover) Asarum (commonly known as Wild Ginger) Asarum originally came from Asia and have kidney-shaped leaves with small red/brown flowers. It has its nickname due to the rhizome not only smelling but also tasting of ginger root, but the two are not related.
Bulbine frutescens Bulbine frutescens is rather a misleading name, as they do not have a bulbous base. They are mainly dormant in the summer, blooming in the spring and then again later in the autumn although not as fully. They can be propagated easily through stem cuttings, which can be
This is a perennial plant belonging to the genus Dorycnium of the Fabaceae family. It reaches an average of 20-50 centimetres in height. It has silver fuzzy leaves and the flowers are white veined pinkish-red. It flowers from May through to July August is a lovely time of year when so many different colours show up in the garden; even basic gardens like to show off with many bulbs and herbs showing their blooms. It is also the time to visit the garden centres, but check around your garden first and make notes of the types of plants you want, that way you will be able to get what is needed rather than pretty plants that may not take to your ground/soil etc. Marc Vijverberg

New test could predict whether breast cancer will return Scientists have found a way of testing whether a person’s breast cancer is likely to return. The research could allow for huge changes in the treatment of cancers, and identify those who are at most at risk of their treatment failing. Looking for immune cell “hotspots” around tumours is a reliable way of telling whether a person is more likely to have their breast cancer relapse, the research found. The study also concluded that women who have more of those immune cells clustered around tumours are more likely to have their breast cancer return within ten years after it has been treated. As well as allowing doctors to find the people who are most at risk of having breast cancer return, the findings could help inform what treatment people receive in the future. The researchers believe that scientists could exploit the findings to help advance the way that people are treated, and stave off any such relapses. People who are diagnosed with oestrogen-sensitive breast cancer – which accounts for around 80 percent of breast cancers, the most common cancer in women – respond well
to treatment. But some patients are at particular risk of dying when it returns, especially after about five years. The new research helps identify people who belong to that sub-group, in a move towards avoiding those relapses. It also means that those who aren’t part of those groups may
be able to avoid chemotherapy. Scientists from the Institute of Cancer Research looked at tissue samples from 1,178 women with the most common form of oestrogen-sensitive breast cancer. They found that those whose immune cells showed the clustering behaviour had a 25 per cent higher chance of having their breast cancer return within 10 years. The chance it would return in five years was also 23 per
cent higher. Lead scientist, Dr Yinyin Yuan, said: “We have developed a new, automated computer tool that makes an assessment of the risk of relapse based on how cells are organised spatially, and whether or not immune cells are clustered together in the tumour.” “In the most common form of breast cancer, oestrogen receptor positive, the presence of hotspots of immune cells clustered together in the tumour was strongly linked to an increased risk of relapse after hormone treatment. “Larger studies are needed before an immune hotspot test could come to the clinic, but in future such a test could pick out patients at the highest risk of their cancer returning. It might also be possible to predict which patients would respond to immunotherapy.” The findings appear in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Researchers said that the study could go on to change the way that people are treated in the future, as well as helping identify the ways that treatment work. Professor Paul Workman, chief executive of The Institute of Cancer Research, said: “What this study tells us is that the immune system probably has a key role to play in how breast cancer responds to hormone treatment.”

Hair-raising donation for AECC
Big congratulations and well done to Dominique Le Gac, Paul Dowinton and Brian Shephard for raising a fantastic 1,365 euros for Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers. These three kindhearted and fearless people had their heads shaved in memory of family members that they have each lost to cancer. The event took place at Hermanos Bar, Playa Flamenca Commecrial
Centre with entertainment all afternoon and a Pink Ladies fundraising raffle. Steve (Shaftoe) the Barber very kindly donated his time for free and rid the brave trio of their locks. The AECC is a Spanish anticancer charity that provides several services such as Early Detection to men and women of all ages and nationalities living in Spain.
Should I get in touch?
Embarrased friend
I broke up with a friend many years ago when we were in our 20s, because I’d heard she was saying nasty things about me, and gossiping about my family behind my back. She was well known for being treacherous. It’s been 30 years since I last spoke to her, and I heard recently that soon after we stopped seeing each other, she lost her brother to cancer - he was only 26. I am feeling a bit bad that I never got in touch even though I have only recently found out this information. It was before the days of Facebook and mobile phones, but I recently looked her up on Facebook and wondered whether I should make contact.
My friend’s boyfriend suddenly finished with her after years of being together. Apparently he’d met someone else and left. She must be devastated because he was her world, and I‘ve heard from her mother that she begged him not to leave. She has since withdrawn from everyone, and I think she is embarrassed. The most upsetting thing for me is that she didn’t tell me herself, and won’t take my calls, or return messages. We’ve known each other since we were at school together. What can I do?
If you feel you want to make contact, then you could send her a friend request on Facebook, and see if she accepts it. If she does, then you can say how sorry you were to hear about her brother, and explain that you hadn’t heard the news until recently. However be careful about jumping back in to a friendship like that. In my experience leopards don’t always change their spots.
If she’s cut everyone else off, I wouldn’t take it personally. It sounds like she is embarrassed. I would leave her right now, as she may need time to herself to come to terms with the situation. If she isn’t answering phone calls etc, I would stop trying to contact her in that way, but instead send her a card through the post with a short message to say that you are there for her if she needs you.

The award winning restaurant has delighted diners with its magical mix of fabulous food, great atmosphere and second-tonone front of house service. What’s in a name when it comes to Torrevieja’s beaches? The Shipwreck, The Priest and The Mad ones aren’t the names of the latest horror movies but, in fact, the English translations of some of the beaches in Torrevieja. Los Náufragos (The Shipwrecks), El Cura (The Priest), Los Locos (The Mad ones), Cala del Lobo (Wolf cove) and La Mata (The Forest) are the names we use every day for our favourite beaches. The paper Informacion offers us some explanations of where these names derive from. Whether they are myth or genuine explanations for the rather unusual titles of these beaches is harder to decide. Informacion suggests that Playa del Cura (The Priest’s beach) was named after a priest who was drowned there many years ago. The validity of this is uncertain, however, the name does date back to 1870. The Playa de Los Locos is allegedly named after a psychiatric hospital that was positioned at the beginning of the 20th century near the Punta del Salaret. The doctor linked to the hospital, Mariano Ruiz Cánovas, was something of a pioneer in new treatments for mental illness. However, his reputation did not prevent the nearby beach inheriting this dubious name. The Playa de Los Náufragos is supposed to have acquired its name as a result of the seasonal storms that hit this part of the coast before the dams or ports were built.
Apparently shipwrecked boats were a frequent sight here and so the beach acquired its reputation and its name. Of course, Playa La Mata owes its name to the town La Mata, but how did the town become known as The Forest? Diario informacion suggest that the use of the term La Mata was the result of the presence of a type of shrub in the area that was known by the name of ‘mata’. The shrub was apparently several meters in height and noteworthy enough to name the small hamlet that was built there after it. Cala del Lobo is less well known than these renowned beaches. Its name is believed to have derived from the presence of sea lions in the area many years ago. The Cala de Los Trabajos on the other hand was believed to have been named after a nearby quarry where stone was extracted and was believed to be used to build the port. Something to think about next time you are relaxing on one of Torrevieja’s beaches. Suzanne O’Connell

Britons shun two-week holidays Britons have ditched the traditional twoweek holiday in favour of shorter breaks as no-frills airlines have taken off over the last 20 years, according to official figures that also confirm the demise of the booze cruise. A review of travel trends since the mid-1990s by the Office for National Statistics highlighted a dramatic rise in the number of holidays taken by UK residents. In 2016, they went on more than 45m foreign holidays, up from 27m in 1996. That was a 68 percent increase, while the UK population rose by 12 percent in the same period. The ONS also found that seven- and 10-day holidays had become more popular than 14-day breaks. The types of holidays taken had also changed over those two decades, statisticians found. But there was little difference in Britons’ top destinations. Spain and France remained the most popular, albeit with a dip in journeys to France. One of the most likely explanations for UK residents going on more but shorter holidays was the growth of budget airlines, the ONS said. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, EU leaders relaxed the rules to create a common aviation area across Europe, allowing low-cost carriers such as easyJet and Ryanair to enter the market, it noted. Between 1996 and 2015 – the most recent figures available – passenger numbers at UK airports increased by 85%, from 135m to 251m. The Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) said its figures also showed that cheaper flights and greater
flexibility by travel companies had driven a shift away from the standard two-week break in the sun and a rise in shorter breaks. The group also highlighted a rise in city breaks thanks to the EU’s Europe-wide “open skies” regulation. The ONS travel roundup also highlighted a steep decline over the past two decades in people travelling abroad and returning the same day. There were more than 2m trips with no overnight stay in 1996 but only 363,000 last year. This could be because many of these visits were booze cruises – journeys across the English Channel to stock up on alcohol and cigarettes – which are no longer as cost-efficient as they used to be. The consultancy Deloitte said its latest research showed holiday spending had risen in the second quarter of this year from the first. But comparing consumer habits with a year ago showed the general pressures on household budgets from higher living costs. Simon Oaten, a partner for hospitality and leisure at Deloitte said: “These are the first signs of a weakening in consumer confidence with regards to their holiday spending, and it remains to be seen whether this proves to be a blip or the start of a prolonged slowdown.”
Spain ever-popular Comparing the most popular holiday destinations in 1996 and 2016, the ONS report found Britons’ love affair with Spain had bloomed, with the number of holidays taken there annually up by 87 percent in 20 years. France was one of
8 DAYS - MEDITERRANEAN CRUISE MSC SPLENDIDA
the few countries that UK tourists were now visiting less than in 1996, with the number of holidays there down 9 percent. Seeking to explain the change, the ONS said:
“
Budget airlines may be behind this too: rather than driving to France on a ferry (the number of holidaymakers travelling by sea has declined by 33 percent since 1996), tourists are perhaps opting for a cheap flight elsewhere instead.”
Germany joined the top 10 destinations for UK holidaymakers and another new entry was cruising, which was four times as popular as it was 20 years ago. “This could be due to an ageing population, with increasing numbers of older people in the population,” the ONS said. Two destinations that dropped out of the top 10 since 1996 were Belgium and Turkey. Outside the top 10, places that had grown in popularity since the 1990s included the United Arab Emirates, thanks to a jump in trips to Dubai. There was also an increase in visits to Iceland, starting about 2010. This was the year that the volcano Eyjafjallajökull erupted and some think that the TV pictures of Iceland shown around the globe encouraged visitors to go there.

Swimmers who ignore red flag warnings face fines This year Spain has seen a 14.66 percent spike in drowning deaths, with 305 people dying in the water from January to July, according to unofficial figures from the country’s lifeguard association, the RFESS. To combat the problem, various municipalities around Spain have decided to fine people who disregard safety warnings. Last year, for example, the popular vacation destination of Xàbia on Spain’s Mediterranean coast decided to penalise swimmers who enter the water when a red warning flag is displayed to the tune of €750. “Despite the red flag, people say it’s not that bad and go in,” said authorities in Xàbia of the move to fine offenders on its beaches, where invisible undertows can make conditions treacherous. Since last year, all beaches in the area have been patrolled by police who, unlike lifeguards, are able to issue fines. To date, only one person has been hit with a sanction. “Unfortunately, Spaniards only respond to fines, as is the case with traffic accidents. If there were no cameras, people would speed more,” said Luis Miguel Pascual, director of research at Spain’s water safety and rescue association AETSAS. Xàbia is not the only place in Spain to issue fines to swimmers who disregard safety warning. In San Bartolomé de Tirajana, a municipality
on the island of Gran Canaria, fines range from €750 to €1,500. This is because their actions put both “swimmers themselves and the people who have to rescue them” at risk, according to local tourism councillor José Carlos Álamo. According to Álamo, people have stopped ignoring safety warnings and it is now two years since anyone has been fined for doing so. In Spain, the decision as to whether or not to fine swimmers who flout the rules is down to individual town halls. In the municipality of Níjar in the southern Spanish province of Almería, people who disregard the red flag warning and have to be rescued are not just fined €750 but are also liable for the cost of their rescue. However, the most expensive place to ignore safety warnings in Spain is on the beaches of Cudillero in the northern province of Asturias. There, repeat offenders could face a fine of up to €3,000. According to AETSAS, there were around 6,000 incidents in the water requiring rescue in Spain last year. In a recent report, the RFESS noted “a certain passivity” on the part of public administrations on the matter [of water safety].” Discussing the rise in drowning deaths in Spain in 2017, the association noted that good weather may have played a role but called for more in-depth studies to be carried out.

Four unspoken etiquette rules when you complete your purchase at the notary Rebecca Serwotka
Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! You’ve chosen your dream home, paid your deposit and the time has arrived to complete your purchase. All you need now is to get to the Notary, pay your money and have the keys to your new abode. It’s an exciting day. Butterflies are in your stomach. Most times, buyers and sellers understand what it’s like when they go to a Notary’s office, but sometimes people forget where they are in all of the excitement, and think that because they themselves may be on holiday, the professionals are too. Buying property in Spain, is certainly a more “hands on” experience than that of the U.K., but as long as you are prepared, everything will go smoothly and you’ll be celebrating in your new home, in no time. By being prepared, doesn’t just mean having your funds available, Lawyer in place and documents ready. It also means that you need to be aware of the place that you will be going to. The Notary. This is a position in Spain that is held in very high regard. This professional person does not work for the buyer or the seller, but is completely independent, and it is the Notary that will sign your Title Deeds. Attending a Notary’s office is, and should be entered with respect. But it is surprising how many people forget where they are, and think they are going for a
picnic on the beach! There are 4 “unspoken rules” about attending a Notary’s office. 1. Don’t turn up in beach wear. You wouldn’t visit with a Lawyer in your own country wearing skimpy shorts, bare chested and in flip flops, so please don’t do it here either. You’re not expected to be wearing a shirt and tie, but smart casual will show them the respect they deserve, and I can assure you, the respect will be mutual. 2. Don’t be late. The Notary’s office can get very busy. They don’t just deal with drawing up Title Deeds! So by being prompt for your appointment will help you get seen to, as quickly as possible. 3. Patience! Like I said previously, the Notary’s office can get very busy, and although you did arrive on time, you can experience what seems like an exaggerated wait time. Don’t get stressed about it. That will achieve nothing, and it definitely won’t speed the process up. Take a breather, and go with the flow. The phrase “mañana” doesn’t exist for nothing. 4. Don’t expect the Notary to speak English. These people are highly educated, and although they probably do speak English, they are not obliged to. Remember, you wouldn’t expect a Lawyer in England to speak Spanish. By remembering these simple rules, you’ll have a completion day that will be the start of many happy memories of home ownership in Spain. For more information and guidance on buying and selling, please contact us and we will send you our FREE e-book or log on to: www.homes4u.es/new-kindle-e-book to request the link. Think property? Foods that turn back your metabolism Think of these foods as Peter Pan’s dirty little secret. The Fountain of Youth is all in your kitchen. Although scientists haven’t figured out how to reverse the aging process, they have discovered how to make you live longer and look younger. And the secret is in your food. Meals high in antioxidants, anti-inflammatories and fat-melting nutrients can stave off any number of diseases, including obesity, and turn back your metabolic clock. To keep your metabolism young and revving, and watch the pounds melt away, incorporate these wholesome foods into your diet. And to burn fat even faster, don’t miss these essentials…
Blueberries These juicy blue spheres are rich in antioxidants called flavonoids—more specifically anthocyanins—which combat free radicals and inflammation. In fact, a review in the journal Frontiers in Immunology showed that chronic metabolic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases all develop from chronic inflammation. So, munching on blueberries can help keep inflammation in check as well as your metabolism running smoothly.
Green Tea This hulk-hued tea is the ultimate weight loss enabler and the perfect way to boost your metabolism. That’s because the tea leaves contain catechins called epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG. A study in the Journal of Advanced Pharmaceutical Technology & Research shows that the high EGCG and polyphenol content in green tea makes it
a more potent anti-inflammatory than any other tea—so drink up! Kelly Choi first discovered the weight-loss powers of tea when her mother, suffering from a terrible battle with diabetes, asked her to help design a tea cleanse for her. As a former nurse in Korea, she already knew the power of this lifesaving drink. Sure enough, with the plan she and Kelly designed together—The 7-Day Flat Belly Tea Cleanse—she dropped an amazing 9 pounds in just a week, and brought her blood sugar under control.
Dark Chocolate If you need something sweet to go alongside a hot mug of green tea, definitely go for chocolate with a cacao content of 70 percent or more. The hearthealthy dark stuff can prevent weight gain, lower blood sugar, and even combat insulin resistance and inflammation. That’s super good news because this inflammation-fighting treat can protect against oxidative damage to your metabolism.
Turmeric Thanks to turmeric’s main antioxidant, curcumin, the exotic spice boasts a bright amber color and some seriously magical anti-inflammatory properties. In addition
to maintaining a youthful metabolism, turmeric can also help prevent cognitive decline, liver damage, heart disease, and the effects of arthritis. See: you don’t have to cut calories like crazy.
Beets If you’ve ever tried roasting beets, you can definitely agree that these sangriacolored root veggies are Mother Nature’s dessert. Not only are beets beyond delish, they’re also high in betaine, a nutrient that fights inflammation and speeds up your metabolism as well as does a bunch of other good stuff like boosting your mood and turning off genes that keep excess fat around.
Whole Eggs Eggs are jam-packed with protein, which helps build lean muscle to keep your metabolism revving. Although the whites are filled with the muscle-building macro, don’t skip out on the yolks. The egg’s orangey centre contains health-boosting and antiinflammation vitamin D as well as fatblasting choline.
Olive Oil Due to its high phenol content, just two tablespoons of EVOO a day could significantly decrease systolic blood pressure in less than a month. And research shows that people who consume olive oil daily reaped the benefits of more serotonin, the happy hormone, than folks who ate other types of fats. In fact, staying happy and fighting stress is a wonderful way to help keep your metabolism from decelerating!
Wild Salmon Fatty fish like wild salmon are a wonderful source of anti-inflammatory omega-3s, a type of polyunsaturated fat. As an added bonus, not only does the wild-caught fish pack in protein, it’s also got both EPA and DHA, two fatty acids that are already in an active form. They help attack inflammation via increasing the hormone adiponectin, which boosts your muscles ability to use carbs for energy, burn fat, and rev your metabolism. Just remember to choose wild-caught over farmed (or Atlantic) salmon because the latter is packed with omega-6s that contribute to excess inflammation—which is why it’s one of the types of fish that cause belly fat.
Yogurt A well-functioning gut garden is essential to fighting inflammation and keeping your metabolism in check because probiotics help produce beneficial microbes that break down foods and can also help you lose 10 pounds. As if that’s not impressive enough, UCLA researchers discovered that consuming
probiotic yogurt resulted in the reduction of stress hormone levels following an emotional task. Make sure to choose a yogurt with low sugar—preferably under 10 grams. Additionally, the dairy treat is perfect as a protein-packed post workout snack to help you make those gains. Strawberries These heart-shaped berries are loaded with more vitamin C than oranges…yes really. And besides for fighting off a pesky cold, this powerful antioxidant has been proven to help folks cope with stress. In fact, studies show that levels of cortisol (one of the hormones that is produced during stress) decreased rapidly in people given a vitamin C supplement. Additionally, people who consumed vitamin C experienced a drop in blood pressure faster than those who didn’t take it. We’ll take a handful of nutrientpacked strawbs over a supplement any day. Nuts These boast the most Magnesium is essential for helping our bodies cope with stress. And since most Americans don’t get enough of the nutrient, they’re likely to experience the physical ramifications, which include high blood pressure, insomnia, fatigue, or loss of appetite—which are all bad news for your metabolism. Nuts are also rich in mood-boosting selenium, tryptophan (the amino acid needed to serotonin production), and depression-zapping omega-3 fatty acids to help you look and feel your best. A handful of almonds a couple of times a week is perfect.

Spaniards find temporary El Dorado in Germany Germany’s solid job market has attracted tens of thousands of southern Europeans seeking an El Dorado while crisis strangles their home economies, but few view Europe’s biggest economy as a permanent home. As Spain, Portugal and Greece plunged into deep recession in the global financial crisis of 2008, unemployment rates urged, reaching 50 percent in Spain and Greece among the youth. Faced with a glut of unfilled jobs in Germany, where the economy is booming and the working population is ageing, Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2011 launched a call for young Spaniards to seek employment here. In 2013, Berlin and Madrid signed a deal reserving 5,000 apprenticeship spots and full-time posts for Spanish school-leavers. Between 2008 and 2015, more than 47,000 Spaniards and 27,500 Greeks aged 18 to 25 arrived in Germany seeking work, according to figures from Germany's statistics office Destatis. But several years on, the immigration trend appears to be the opposite. The number of young Spaniards who have left Germany soared from 2,800 in 2012 to 4,300 in 2015, according to Destatis, as their home economy started to recover. Albert del Barrio from Valencia was among those who benefited from Germany’s welcome. After a year’s exchange programme at a Prague university where he met his Italian girlfriend, he decided to move to Berlin, where “we can speak English” in his sector, he told Spanish news agency AFP. He found work quickly in a start-up for smartphone industry marketing. “Clearly there are many more job opportunities in Germany,” he said. Some 600 kilometres (400 miles) to the south of Berlin, another Spanish national, 31-year-old Jose Ramon Avendano Fuentes is in an apprenticeship at an electricity firm.
The idea of trying his luck in Germany came from his employment agency in Albacete in 2014, after he failed to land a job at home. “They told me that it’s possible to find a job in Germany where they really need people,” he said in halting German. Since then, Fuentes has managed to integrate into life in Tacherting, a small south-eastern village with 5,000 people located close to the Austrian border. He now plays in a local orchestra and has no qualms about walking around in traditional Bavarian men’s wear -- lederhosen. But some are returning to their home countries, disillusioned after struggling to fit in in Germany, where they sometimes find themselves with precarious contracts. Even del Barrio and Fuentes, who have found what they were seeking in Germany, don't see themselves living here in the long run. “I would like to stay another two or three years in Germany, but after, well, life can change a lot,” said Fuentes, who will finish his job training in February but is still waiting to land a full-time post. Del Barrio is also eyeing a return to his homeland. The Spanish economy has been recovering, with growth expected to reach 3.1 percent this year. In fact, as more southern Europeans mull packing their bags and heading home, some have even set up consulting services to help them ease back into their local job markets and there appears to be an enormous desire on the part of Spaniards to return. Those who fail to find a footing in Germany’s vital engineering or high-tech manufacturing industries often find themselves having to re-examine their ambitions. Some are increasingly disillusioned after spending some time in the north, such as nurses for instance, who found that they are more valued in Spain than in Germany.

THE LADY IN THE VAN 10.00pm - BBC2
The Lady in the Van tells the true story of Alan Bennett’s strained friendship with Miss Mary Shepherd, an eccentric homeless woman whom Bennett befriended in the 1970s before allowing her temporarily to park her Bedford van in the driveway of his Camden home. She stayed there for 15 years. As the story develops Bennett learns that Miss Shepherd is really Margaret Fairchild, a former gifted pupil of the pianist Alfred Cortot. She had played Chopin in a promenade concert, tried to become a nun, was committed to an institution by her brother, escaped, had an accident when her van was hit by a motorcyclist for which she believed herself to blame, and thereafter lived in fear of arrest.

KILL ME THREE TIMES 5.40pm - SKY MOVIES PREMIERE
In the bizarre world of “Kill Me Three Times,” ordinary people in Western Australia have perfect teeth and perfect hair and generally very fit to middlingly fit bodies. And all these very well-maintained ordinary people seem to spend all their leisure time, of which there’s apparently quite a lot, attempting varieties of criminal activity. Seems kind of counterproductive given the abundance of natural beauty in the location, but what are you going to do? There’s a bar/hotel owner sitting on a pile of apparently ill-gotten cash, a dentist with a gambling problem and his hotsy-totsy wife who’s got him embroiled in a murder and insurance fraud scheme, there’s a wayward wife looking to rip off her suddenly cash-rich husband and leave town with the hunky local auto mechanic with a quick temper and there’s a crooked cop extorting money from a bunch of the aforementioned.

People smugglers double price of journeys into Spanish waters People smugglers have reacted to increased demand for their dubious services by doubling their fees for migrants hoping to enter Spain illegally via the maritime route from North Africa. According to a document from the European Union border agency Frontex, criminal organizations have raised prices from an average €500 in 2016 to double that figure this year. Almost 7,500 migrants arrived in Spain using the maritime route in the first six months of this year against 3,600 for the same period in 2016, figures from Spain’s Interior Ministry show. Although [the situation] is unpredictable, we have to be prepared for several intense months in terms of arrivals,” a Red Cross spokesperson said, noting that good summer weather would likely see more migrants making the sea crossing to Spain. In June alone, 2,200 undocumented migrants tried to cross the Strait of Gibraltar to enter Spain and people smugglers now hope to make the most of this increased demand, according to the Frontex document. These criminal groups offer different products depending on how wealthy their clients are, with some of the packages
even providing for multiple crossing attempts. The options range from trips in inflatable toy dinghies to journeys by speedboat or even jet ski. The less risky the trip, the higher the cost is. “They [migrants] pay between €100 and €1,500 to cross to Spain, depending on the crossing area and the type of boat used,” the Frontex document states. This price can soar to €3,000 if people opt for a jet ski – a trip that takes around 30 minutes. “Usually the smuggler leaves the migrant on the shore and then quickly makes their way back to the African coast,” says Frontex of this option. There are people ready to risk their life and if they lose it, we have to bear part of the responsibility when this situation repeats itself over and over again,” said Socialist Party (PSOE) deputy Esther Peña during Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido’s most recent appearance in the Spanish Congress – one that came after 49 migrants died in the Alborán Sea while attempting to cross to Spain from Morocco. At least 6,000 people have died trying to cross to Spain using the maritime route in the last 20 years according to Spanish human rights group Asociación Pro Derechos
Humanos de Andalucía. Increase While the number of arrivals in 2017 is still a long way down from 2006 when 39,180 people made their way to Spain by sea, there has been an increase in the last two years. In 2016, 8,162 people arrived in Spain in this way, double the number in 2015. And in the first six months of this year, the figure was nearly 7,500 against 3,600 in the first half of 2016. Frontex says there are three main reasons for this increase. Despite rising costs, the Spanish route is still more affordable than entering Europe through central and eastern European because of the shorter distance involved. In addition, people smugglers have starting using speedboats, traditionally reserved for hashish shipping, meaning they can transfer more people in a shorter period. “At the same time, the dismantling of makeshift migrant camps in Morocco and Algeria might act as a ‘push factor’ in displacing migrants to other areas,” according to Frontex. Some 90.48 percent of people making the sea crossing from North Africa to Spain are men from subSaharan Africa, according to the Spanish Red Cross.

hat a great week ahead for entertainment. Hot Chocolate and Bob Marley fans will be especially spoilt this week as effervescent Greg Bannis will be in lots of areas this week. Greg, who was in Hot Chocolate for 16 years (and replaced Errol Brown) is an extraordinary man. He has boundless energy and with his love of all music and people, is always a wow factor. Greg works in Austria, Germany and France, but now lives on the Costa Blanca. The Greg Bannis experience can be found at The Pub in Gran Alacant on Tuesday and El Rey in Balsicas on Thursday. Friday will be his first visit to the expansive Olympia Pool and Gardens in Mil Palmeras then on Saturday it’s over to Villamartin Plaza where he joins up with Dean Alexanda at Players Lounge. He is only here for a short time, but already Curtis is making his mark as a bit of a rock god! The very talented musician and showman will be at The Club in Quesada on Saturday for the first time, followed on Sunday at Olympia Pool and Gardens. I recently went to see his show and in my opinion he is one of the best guitar players I have seen. Not only is he good looking, but he has the personality to match and the skills of a great entertainer. His list of credits show just how diverse his talents are. It’s not everyone who can say they have been the guitarist with the Four Tops. If you haven’t seen him yet, get yourself to these venues. You won’t believe your eyes and ears! Benidorm comes to La Marina Urb. on Saturday. Hillside complex has the return of the Benidorm’s top Tina Turner Tribute, aptly named “Benidorm Tina”. The lady sounds and moves just like our Tina and does some belting dance songs for her second show from 60’s to ACDC. Shimmy on over to Calle Bilbao for a very special show. If you are into 70’s and Quo then you are in luck as multi talented Mickey Lewys from Benidorm will be at Posh Club, next to the market place. Spain’s first-ever ‘nap-bar’ opens in Madrid Spain's first-ever ‘nap bar’ for weary businessmen has opened in Madrid. Siesta and Go in the heart of the capital’s financial district of Azca charges weary workers €14 an hour for a power nap in a private bed. In a modern twist on the traditional Spanish siesta, founder Maria Estrella Jorro de Inza got the idea from similar businesses that operate in Japan. “It’s funny that we’re known for the siesta, but we haven’t been professional
about it,” said De Inza. “We get a lot of men in suits who just want to relax and women wanting to take their heels off. Lunch break is the busiest time.” Last year, Spaniards racked up 1,695 hours at work on average, ahead of Germany and France. Only Italian and Portuguese staff spent more time at work, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Contaminated eggs have not entered Spain The Spanish health authorities have assured that none of the contaminated eggs detected in Europe have entered the country ‘for the moment', even though they are known to have been circulating in France and the UK. An alert was raised recently about consignments of eggs from Belgium bearing traces of an insecticide which is not fit for human consumption and is banned in the European Union. It is called fipronil and it is used to treat a parasite in
laying hens, known as dermanyssuss gallinae. The eggs have been distributed to the UK, France, Austria, Denmark, Italy, The Netherlands, Ireland, Sweden, Germany, Poland and Romania, as well as within Belgium itself and to Switzerland, an EEA nation. But within hours of the pesticide being detected, the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Fodder (RASFF) meant all member States in the EU and all
EEA countries were advised. An inquiry has been launched by the European Commission, leading to a temporary block on all distribution from source farms, the immediate withdrawal of any eggs believed to be contaminated from the market, and a disciplinary case opened to ascertain whether Belgium reacted too slowly to suspected use of fipronil. It was detected by the Belgian food safety authority, AFSCA, in June, but EU
Iberdrola builds big in Britain Iberdrola is to construct its largest renewable energy park in history in Britain after discarding the Spanish auctions. This means an investment of 3.3 billion euros after receiving the go ahead from the Government - the marine wind farm will have a potential power generation of 1,200 Megawatts sufficient to supply power to a million British homes. The permission to build East Anglia Three, joins other renewable projects in the country, and comes after the Spanish company dismissed the idea of bidding in the three auction planned by the Spanish Government to reintroduce green energy. Iberdrola, directed by Ignacio Galán has become of the past decade a worldwide brand for renewable energies in Mexico, USA and now the United Kingdom despite Brexit on the horizon.
authorities were not told about it until July 20, and the scandal did not hit the headlines until early August. According to analyses published since, the insecticide was used by the Dutch farm Chick Friends, although it was the Belgian firm Poultry Vision, based in the province of Amberes, which supplied the substance to Chick Friends. Spain is thought to have been safe from the contamination at present, but the Spanish Agency for Consumers, Food
Safety and Nutrition (AECOSAN), part of the ministry of health, is monitoring developments. Fortunately, Spain's sizeable agricultural industry means a very high proportion of its foodstuffs are nationally produced, with only certain fruits and vegetables that do not grow regularly in the country being imported – in fact, when produce is not in season in Spain, it is often hard to even find it in supermarkets.

Ben via email asks: Hi Aunty. I've been advised that I need a Wi-Fi extender that I can plug into my laptop to get better range of the network. Am I getting confused and have you had experience with anything like that. Do you have any advice on where I can purchase something like that near Torrevieja and what price should I expect to pay ? Aunty Says: I Ben. There are two ways of doing this, and as always I will only recommend brands that I have successfully used in the past. You can buy a TPLink USB Wi-Fi adaptor for around €15 which will plug into a USB port on your computer, and because it comes with a USB extension lead, you are able to move it around to get a better signal. A better solution would be to permanently extend your existing Wi-Fi area coverage with an Asus WiFi repeater for around €25 which will increase the coverage by at least 100%. I have used both methods with great results. If you are interested then email me and I can send you details of a local shop that will stock this kind of thing. Lisa via email asks: Hello Aunty. In the last couple of days I have regularly been getting a message 'Policia Atencion' coming up (screen snapshot attached) and I
Technology
can only get rid of it temporarily using Task Manager and then each time it appears it is from a different website. Any ideas on what is it and how on earth do I get rid of it? Aunty Says: Hello Lisa. This is a nasty virus that has been doing the rounds since 2010 and has morphed into different forms. Originally it appeared to be from the FBI and warned the victim that “illegal copyright or porn
activity has been detected on your computer, but if you pay $200 you would get off with just a warning” The virus writers then adapted it to include the Metropolitan Police, and recently Interpol, and I have recently seen it showing up on a few Android devices. It is very authentic looking and pretty much stops you doing

anything until you pay the fee. It is a really tricky virus to remove completely so maybe give it a go with your favourite antivirus program and Malwarebytes. If this fails then let me know and we can try a few other things. Alan from San Pedro asks: I regularly use Skype to video chat with my Grandkids back in the UK but the sound through my HP laptop speakers is really tinny and they often tell me to speak up as I “sound like I’m in a baked bean can”. Is this an Internet problem and is there a way of improving the sound quality? The video is perfect by the way. Aunty Says: Hello Alan. The built in mic and speakers on most laptops are fairly poor quality so maybe invest in a headphone and mic set for around €20. This will plug into the side somewhere on your laptop where there should be 2 small round sockets next to each other marked with a headphone and mic symbol. Simply plugging them in should set everything up, but if not then go to the Skype audio settings via the ‘tools’ menu and check that the headphones & mic are set as default. Any questions then email me at auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com. See you all next week.

Classic cars at Mercadillo del Toro The last Sunday of July a classic car motorcycle exhibition was organised at the Mercadillo del toro, just off the N332 at Pilar de la Horadada. More than 30 American, sports, old and modern cars and about 100 motorbikes descended on the market area which covers around 15 000 m2. About 1,000 people visited the event from different cities across southern Spain to see these cool cars, take a photo for a memory and have a good day‌ and with more than 100 litres of beer being consumed on the day, they certainly did. The guests of the event and the organisers noted that this was the first time an event of such scale and format was held on the Costa Blanca. There was live music, cafes, bars, and of course, a children's playground, so there is something for all the family. According to the organisers, such events will become a good tradition and will be held at the Market on the last
Sunday of every month. “Mercadillo del Toro is a wonderful shopping complex, which is known not only as a market with shopping tents, but also an excellent place for organising mass events and festivals. We create for people interesting projects such as car boot sales and exhibitions, and this is just the beginning, said one of the organisers. The next car and motorcycle exhibition will be held on 27th August and everyone is welcome!

The Most Popular Summer Questions Answered – Part 3 8º. Washing your vehicle on public roads. 30 - 3,000€ fine. We covered this topic quite recently. Many people are astonished about this rule, but each Town Hall has its own legislation, and most of them don't let citizens clean their vehicle on public roads. Think that when you clean your vehicle on the road you use water and soap, and bikers, riders, elderly people can slip as a result of your actions, even if a vehicle has to brake suddenly, to avoid an accident on a slippery street, it will travel more distance so it will be more difficult to stop in time. Apart from that, when you clean a car on a public street, you are dirtying a public road. So it is not fair to ask owners of the dog to clean up after the animals do their businesses and we clean our vehicles on the road. Ask your Town Hall if you want to know if it is allowed or not and about how much the fine is because all is legislated differently in each town. 9º Passenger with feet on the dashboard. 100€ fine. The fine is 80€ not 100€ and it is the driver who is the person responsible for all passengers in the vehicle, and ensuring they keep a proper position in the
vehicle, so the driver will be fined in these cases. In the event of an accident, the passenger has a significantly increased risk of suffering fatal injuries on the spot, if they have their feet on the dashboard. 10º.Throwing a cigarette out the window. 200€ fine and 4 points. This fine could be much
higher if your action causes a fire. In this case, you will be prosecuted, paying all the costs of the extinction, even going to prison if the costs are high or if anyone is unjured or killed. 11º. Not carrying your driving license. 10€ fine. The law states you must take your licence with you, but nowadays, the traffic police take computers in their vehicles and they can check on the spot if you have a licence or not, as long as you can properly identify
yourself. In the future, it will be compulsory to take an official document with photo to prove your identity and this fine will be removed. Remember that if you have a European Licence and you don´t show it to the officers, they can only check Spanish licences. In Spain, it is a criminal offence to not have a licence, so you can be arrested and spend the night in the cells if you cannot prove to the officers that you have a licence. Remember, the 10€ fine is when you hold a licence but don´t take it with you, and it is only applied to Spanish licences. 12º. Carrying 6 or 7 people in the car. 80€ fine. The fine will be 200€ or 80€, depending on the excess of occupants. The vehicle will be immobilised until another vehicle or taxi can take the rest of the passengers. The fine is for the driver. Remember, only trust information from reputable or official sources, if you have any doubts about traffic law you can speak to the Guardia Civil officers behind the Facebook page by sending them a message, visit n332.es, or dgt.es, or consult with a solicitor or other official body.

It's Good News Week! After constant overtures and plenty of drama, Vicente Boix, President of CD Torrevieja, has confirmed that the club will play matches at the beleaguered Vicente Garcia stadium this season. The Town Hall has dragged their feet in repairing this iconic venue and does not seem to appreciate the strength of passion behind the club playing at their fortress home. Sadly the covered stand will not be usable, but fans can cope with this inconvenience so long as they can get back to their "heartland" stadium. In another piece of great news, President Boix has cut season tickets to an inviting €50. He is saying thank you to loyal fans who have supported the club through thick and thin, as well as encouraging as many as possible to get to games and cheer the team back into the 3rd division. The good news does not stop there with the squad growing steadily as manager Pedreno and his staff carefully canvass for quality personnel to ensure the team rides high in their new division. With less than three weeks to the first league contest, key positions have been covered, and several others are being targeted to guarantee a seriously competitive outfit. That first match, at home in the Vicente Garcia, will be against Almoradi and kick off at 7pm, so get that in the diary right away. Torry then play their next two matches at home, as Villena requested
that their game be switched. So three home games on the bounce for Torry in their quest to start the season on fire. Fans can buy their season tickets from the Torry Army office in San Luis between 10.00 and 12.00 Monday to Friday, as well as from the Nelson Mandela after 7pm on week nights, during training sessions. They will be on sale an hour before kick off on 3rd September, so no one need fear about not being able to get their hands on one of these exceptionally value for money season long tickets. The club has not announced any pre-season friendly matches yet, as they are concentrating on securing the right players for the squad and blending them into a cohesive, efficient unit. The plan will be to get a couple of games under their belt before the end of the month and these will be notified on the official club website and on the Torry Army Facebook page. In the meantime, here are a few of the new recruits that fans can look forward to get to know. Jeff Scott Vice president CD Torrevieja

Your week in Sport ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com
Last week folks, if you can remember that far back, I lamented the fact the Usain Bolt’s individual 100m career had come to an end as a silver medalist behind a guy banned for drugs twice in his career. Today I lament the fact that the last we will probably see of the great man is him holding his hamstring as Great Britain inflicted the first defeat on the Jamaican relay team since 2007. Jamaica, understandably, were unimpressed at being kept waiting 40 minutes in the call room, allowing everyone to get a little cold, leading to Bolt pulling up lame on his leg. GB, equally understandably, were cock-a-hoop at not dropping the baton in a major final. The women were almost as impressive, grabbing silver in their 4x100m final.
Mo Farah was also knocked from his 5000m perch, and came out guns ablazing in the press conference, saying once again he is “clean” and if people can prove he is not, then they should. Yet again a Farah denial of drug taking sounded more like a “well you can’t prove it” rather than a “I’ve never taken drugs in my life”. But hey, each to their own.
Half a decade on from London 2012, the event of a lifetime where the taxpayers cash was supposed to inspire the next generation of athletes, Great Britain have totalled, wait for it, FOUR medals - two gold, two silver. Well, that was worth it then. Talking of things that felt like a good idea at the time, I can almost guarantee that we will look back at day/night Test cricket in a decade’s time and laugh, the mere idea of trying to pick out a pink ball in the dark being as laughable as the Allen Stanford Series. The West Indies are in town for the second Test series of the summer, and with the pink ball being genuinely more difficult to see than the traditional red in natural light, all the English bats will be grateful that most West Indians with the potential to be as fast as Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding, Andy Roberts and Patrick Patterson are still choosing basketball. England should win the series comfortably, even allowing for a 10pm finish when most of the commentators would normally be on their third bottle of wine. No matter what happens in the historic match starting this week, nothing will beat the achievement of Dorchester CC who needed 35 to win off their final over in a game against Swinbrook CC. It was never in doubt as Steve McComb hit 40. Well batted sir, are you any good at opening as Cook needs a new partner?
BETTAS TORREVIEJA RFC CONTINUE MOVING FORWARD Over the last few weeks Bettas Torrevieja RFC have had more and more ladies joining and also juniors coming down to train, and both numbers are increasing ready for the new season. The young ladies play for the Dubai Exiles RFC a team that has been going for 50 years. They are looking to get enough players training so that they can start playing friendlies ready to join the league late September, so come down and join in and help the club achieve its goal, as it is almost there already. For more information about the team and training contact Javi on 603 727 179

Tales from the top flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com
Well hello to the Premier League, we have missed you. All that money spent over the summer and what do we have? Arsenal and Liverpool still unable to defend, Chelsea collapsing right after winning the league, Jonjo Shelvey is still a liability, West Bromwich Albion scoring winners from set pieces and Crystal Palace’s aim of being the South London equivalent of Ajax Amsterdam has hit the rocks already. Personally, my biggest question from the weekend’s kick off was whether any of the teams (other than West Brom, obviously) had bothered doing any kind of defensive training whatsoever? Friday night kicked off the new season with a seven-goal thriller at the Emirates. Alexandre Lacazette had the Gooners dreaming of a new dawn before the Gooners were instantly reminded why dreaming of anything being that different is a very risky business. Leicester City led 3-2 with seven minutes to go before Aaron Ramsey drew Arsenal level, sending many a celebrity to their newly designed “I won’t die in here” bunkers. 33 with six minutes left, there’s only going to be one man who can sort out that mess, right? Olivier Giroud really has to learn that if he wants to be anything more than the super sub option this season, scoring excellent headers late in the game to win all three points is not the way to go about it. Still, the Arsene haters who were hitting Twitter very hard after 40 minutes and 80 minutes must have had a nice time. Personally, I was just glad that my fantasy football faith in Rob
Holding had paid dividends. I presume the guy is colour blind, the amount of times he picked a Leicester player with a pinpoint pass. Jurgen Klopp will have watched the Friday night match and thought, “well at least we can defend better than that!” How did that turn out for you, Kloppo? It took until the end of the first real set-piece against them for everyone to notice that they might have some very quick, exciting wide men in red but if they cannot defend a simple corner into the box then not a lot has changed at Liverpool. Leicester City and Arsenal had set the bar quite low when it came to defending balls into the box, but Liverpool really did manage to take it to a whole new depth. But, they showed grit, determination and the buzz word that will make all this xG stuff disappear very quickly, character. 3-2 deep into injury time equals three points going back to Anfield, right? Hell no, not if Watford get another corner, bung it into the near post and just watch more carnage ignite. Don’t change a thing Jurgen, please don’t change a thing. We need more of this comedy in the modern game. Antonio Conte said a few days ago how important it is that Chelsea “do not have a Mourinho season” this time round. As Sam Vokes put Burnley 3-0 up at Stamford Bridge all that was missing was Conte kicking a water bottle and abusing a doctor. Gary Cahill clearly asked John Terry for some advice on being the Chelsea club captain as he managed to disgrace himself within 20 minutes of the new season, getting a straight red for a silly challenge. Still, the league champions at home against a Burnley side not known for their high scoring escapades away
from Lancashire? There shouldn’t be a problem. Chelsea nearly came back, the match ending 3-2, and Alvaro Morata looked dangerous which is at least a minor positive for the Italian manager who had to defend himself after the match, saying “my team selection was not a message to the board” before whispering under his breath “but if they don’t sign me some new players soon I’m on the next flight back to Italy”. The game did have to stop momentarily because “two idiots” ran on to the pitch which, personally, I think is a little harsh on Rudiger and Batshuayi who did try their best. Over at Old Trafford, it was almost as if Jose Mourinho knows a thing or two about football as his two main signings, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic, slotted straight into Premier League life against West Ham. Who’d have thought it? One of the most successful managers of all time gets given a barrel load of cash and he doesn’t completely pee it up against a wall? Next he’ll be demonstrating he knows more than the Twitterati. Matic went about breaking up anything that looked like a West Ham attack while Romelu Lukaku showed that his first touch is alright providing he aims it at the goal each time, netting a classy brace on his home debut. What wasn’t so classy was the badge kiss though. Come on Rom, you’ve only been there a couple of weeks. Did you tell your missus you loved her a fortnight after you started going out? No doubt he won’t be as interested in the badge when Real Madrid or Barcelona start sniffing round in a couple of seasons time. Anthony Martial looked thrilled with his part in the win, adding the third with a big smile on his face. Or not, as the case maybe. Joe Hart
certainly proved Pep Guardiola wrong, shipping four on his return to the Premier League. Hell, he even let Pogba score. Danny Rose may be very unhappy with Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer policy over the summer, but even he must have been quite impressed with Pochettino’s ability to replace Kyle Walker with, er, Kyle Walker. Kyle Walker-Peters started at right back for the Spurs up at St James’ Park and won the man-of-the-match award for a very solid performance. Dele Alli was key to Tottenham’s opening day win which only got going once his ankle loitered underneath the sole of Shelvey’s boot, leading to another straight red for the Newcastle midfielder. From there it was game over with Alli scoring and Rose’s replacement Ben Davies getting the second. Easy there Danny, you might not even get back in this team you feel needs better players. Wayne Rooney has come in for a fair bit of stick in the last couple of seasons, 99% of it completely fair and reasonable. However, even I (one of his biggest critics) smiled for him as he got off the ground and headed home the winning goal on his league return to Goodison Park. Stoke City are in trouble already, there is no doubt about it. If you are letting Rooney score a header against you in this day and age, then it is fair to say that you a relegation fodder. Damn, I was so close to getting through the whole paragraph without knocking the guy. I was probably a little bit harsh on Brighton in my pre-match predictions on talesfromthetopflight.com last week, suggesting Manchester City would beat them by five or six. Despite having less than 4% of possession, Brighton
managed to keep City out until the final quarter of their first ever Premier League match which was a fine effort when you think that Manchester City’s new full backs cost more than every single Brighton transfer ever made. Sergio Aguero made it clear he isn’t for sale by scoring the first and then poor Lewis Dunk probably wanted to go and get slammed after his own-goal finished the game. Frank de Boer casually rocked up at Selhurst Park saying Crystal Palace would play like his former club, Ajax. Well Frank, I am pretty sure that Ajax rarely lost 3-0 at home to a club that hadn’t played top flight football for 45 years, so I am guessing there is still some work to be done? David Wagner had Huddersfield playing like the perfect symphony as Steve Mounie pulled down the pants of the Palace back four twice, getting a brace on his debut. So after the first weekend of games, we will no doubt see all the hyperbole flick into overdrive. Folks, United started last season pretty well too remember, so don’t get too excited - they were only playing West Ham after all. Jurgen Klopp is bound to remember that he meant to work on defending set-pieces at some point, and get right on that in time for the Champions League match with Hoffenheim. Arsene Wenger will have been delighted with Arsenal’s attacking play and is probably concocting a plan to bring Alexis Sanchez back into the side as a sweeper or something, because good players can play anywhere. And as for Chelsea, as I’ve said all summer, if Antonio Conte is there at the end of the season I will buy all five of my readers a pint.
