Four Spanish Inventions and Firsts in the World

1. The First Novel was Written in Spanish

Back in 1605, Miguel de Cervantes wrote Don Quixote, widely considered to be the world’s first modern novel. The seminal book is seen as one of the most important pieces of Spanish literature ever written and is a founding work of Western literature.

2. Home to the World’s Oldest Restaurant

Feeling peckish in Madrid? Well, you might want to check out Restaurante Botín, which the team at the Guinness World Records has awarded the title of the world’s oldest restaurant. The eatery has been serving up its delicious signature dish of Cochinillos asado (roast suckling pig) since 1725.

3. The Mop

You probably have one of the most famous inventions in your kitchen closet: the mop. The mop was designed by the Spanish inventor Manuel Corominas, an Air Force engineer who was inspired to design a device to help with housework after a trip to the US in the 1950s. He had observed Americans washing the floor with a flat rag that was subsequently wrung through rollers in a bucket.

4. The Stapler

Although the patent was filed by the American Henry R. Heyl in 1877, the modern design that we know of this tool was imaginedbytwoSpaniardsin the 1930s, Juan Solozábal and Juan Olive, therefore they invented the stapler which helps organise millions of documents worldwide to this day!

Pineapples are a great fruit, but there’s no way you love them as much as the Georgians did! Back in the 18th century, pineapples were imported from abroad, which was very expensive, and so only the richest people had them! In fact, they were SO fancy that people didn’t even eat them, they would put them on the mantelpiece for everyone to admire until they went rotten! Some people even designed their houses based on pineapples, and you can still see some of these houses today!

Do You Have to Track Calories to Lose Weight?

When you first embark on your weight loss journey, just the act alone of tracking everything you eat is enough to elicit a change on the scale. It´s all a matter of accountability. One of the questions I get asked a lot though is…..

I’m Tracking Calories and I’m in A Defect But I’m Not Losing Weight....Why Matt?

I hear this all the time, my clients come to me and show me their tracking app super proud with how well they’ve done all week tracking all their calories, but something’s a miss....

We’re missing Saturday and Sundays entries....I ask why, they tell me, well I had a bit of a cheat on Saturday, a few beers that night, then I was rough on the Sunday so I had a fry up coz I needed some stodge.

Ok well, firstly, whatever you had at the weekend must have bumped you up to maintenance calories if you’ve stayed the same weight, if you’ve gained then you went over with what you consumed.

You know it if you’re totally honest with yourself, it’s easy to be bang on during the week when motivation is high, but as I’ve said before, once motivation is out of the window, (the second SUSAN calls you for that ‘glass of wine’) it’s discipline that takes over the driving seat.

You could be 500 cals under each day and on track to lose 1 pound, as 3500 cals would equate to that in a week, but once you switch off at the weekend, it could all be undone. Then you jump right back on again on the Monday as motivation is high and the cycle begins again....

A better approach would be not to deny yourself too much during the week so you’re not missing things and building that craving Which leads to excitement for the ‘good stuff’ at the weekend.

Be brutally honest with yourself when it comes to tracking calories. I even do this myself, I know where my calories need to be to lose weight consistently, but I don’t track things like milk in my coffee, the odd sweet here and there, but I know I have to once I get down to single digit body fat.

I always advise my clients to embark on tracking their calories at least for a couple of weeks if anything to find out where your maintenance calories lie. Once you know for sure how many calories you require to maintain your current weight, you can then put steps in place to creat a calorie deficit. Over time if continually track your calories, you gain the habit of being able to éyeball´the calories in your food, so you won´t always have to track.

The act of tracking calories will teach you everything you need to know about your own habits and your nutritional needs and how to lose bodyfat in the long term!

A lot of the time, if you are honest with yourself, you know the answers to a lot of these questions, it just takes some self awareness and the ability to call yourself on your own BS.

4 Simple Ways to Keep Allergy Season at Bay

Pollen:

The Costa del Sol is home to diverse plant life, including numerous flowering plants and trees. This rich biodiversity contributes to higher pollen counts during the allergy season. If you experience symptoms such as sneezing, itchy eyes, and a runny nose, pollen might be the culprit.

Sea spray:

In coastal areas like the Costa del Sol, moisture from the sea air can contribute to increased mould presence. Common symptoms of mould allergies include nasal congestion, throat irritation, and respiratory problems.

To minimise the impact of these allergens and improve indoor air quality, here are four simple ways to keep allergy season at bay:

Regular cleaning and dusting:

Create a clean and allergen-free environment by regularly cleaning your home. Dust surfaces with a damp cloth to prevent the spread of dust particles. Vacuum carpets, rugs, and upholstery frequently use a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter to trap allergens effectively. Wash bedding and curtains in hot water to eliminate dust mites.

Create an allergy-free bedroom: Your bedroom should be a sanctuary from allergens, especially during sleep. Use allergenproof covers for mattresses, pillows, and duvets to prevent dust mites from settling in. Wash bedding regularly in hot water. Keep windows closed during high pollen periods and consider using an air purifier to maintain clean air in the bedroom.

Hair loss and hair thinning are common problems that affect millions of people worldwide. While it is normal to lose some hair every day approximately 50/100 strands is normal, excessive hair loss can be a cause for concern. There are several factors that can contribute to hair loss and hair thinning, including genetics, hormonal imbalances, medical conditions, and lifestyle factors.

Genetics

Androgenetic alopecia is a hereditary condition that affects both men and women. This condition is caused by a combination of genetic and hormonal factors that lead to the gradual shrinking of hair follicles, resulting in thinner and shorter hair strands.

Hormonal Imbalances

In women, hormonal changes during pregnancy, menopause, and thyroid disorders can cause hair loss. In men, an excess of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that is converted from testosterone, can cause hair follicles to shrink and eventually stop producing hair.

Medical Conditions

Autoimmune disorders such as alopecia areata and lupus can cause hair loss, as can scalp infections, such as ringworm. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy can also cause hair loss, as these treatments target rapidly dividing cells, including hair follicles.

Lifestyle Factors

Certain hairstyles can contribute to hair loss and hair thinning. Stress can cause hair follicles to enter a resting phase, leading to hair loss. Poor nutrition, particularly a lack of protein and iron, can also lead to hair loss.

Here are my helpful tips to slow down or help stop our hair from thinning…

1. Maintain a healthy diet: Eating a balanced diet that is rich in vitamins especially vitamin B and minerals such as zinc and iron can help promote healthy hair growth. Foods that are high in protein are essential.

2. Avoid tight hairstyles: Tight hairstyles such as braids, ponytails, and buns can cause hair follicles to become damaged and lead to hair loss. Opt for looser hairstyles instead.

3. Use gentle hair care products: Harsh chemicals in hair care products can damage hair and lead to hair loss. Use gentle, natural hair care products that are free from sulphates and parabens.

4. Manage stress: Stress can cause hair follicles to enter a resting phase, leading to hair loss. Practice stress-reducing techniques such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises.

5. Treat underlying medical conditions: Certain medical conditions such as thyroid disorders and autoimmune disorders can cause hair loss. Treating these conditions can help slow down or stop hair loss.

Sticky Barbecued Prawn Salad

The Ultimate Summer Sizzler

BBQ Season is amongst us, so here’s an impressive dish to add to your repertoire, and create a memorable Surf & Turf moment for your guests…

Ingredients

• 4 cloves of garlic

• 4 spring onions

• 1 fresh green chilli

• ½ bunch of fresh basil

• 12 large unpeeled raw Tiger prawns

• 1 lemon

• olive oil

• 75 ml sweet chilli sauce

• 8 thin slices of focaccia bread

• 2 large ripe tomatoes

• 1 handful of ripe mixed-colour cherry tomatoes

• 2 ripe avocados

• 1 Red Onion

• balsamic vinegar

• 1 lime

• extra virgin olive oil

Step 1.

Light the barbecue and prepare a hot side and a cooler side. Meanwhile, prep all the ingredients so you’re ready to go: peel and finely slice 3 of the garlic cloves and slice the spring onions diagonally into 1cm pieces.

Halve, deseed and chop the chilli, then pick the basil leaves and finely chop the stalks. Pull off and discard the little legs from the underside of the prawns. Halve the lemon.

Step 2.

When you’re ready to cook, place a heat proof pan over a high heat. Add a splash of oil, the garlic and spring onions and cook for a few seconds until sizzling and smelling great, then add the chilli and the basil stalks. After a minute or so, add the chilli sauce and a splash of water, then cook for 5 to 10 minutes, or until thickened and reduced, stirring regularly. Place on the cool side of the grill until needed.

Step 3.

Toast the focaccia slices on both sides until crisp and golden. Halve the remaining garlic clove and rub all over the toasted focaccia, then keep warm until needed.

Slice the red onion into thin moons and cut the large tomatoes into random chunks and halve and quarter the cherry tomatoes, then place in a bowl. Drizzle with the balsamic and toss to coat. Halve and destone the avocados, slice the flesh and place in a bowl, then squeeze over the lime juice and toss together.

Drizzle the prawns with oil and place on the hot side of the barbecue along with the lemon, cutside down. Grill for around 4 minutes on each side, or until crisp on the outside and cooked through – the exact timing will depend on how hot your barbecue is, so use your instincts and keep a close eye.

Step 4.

Once cooked, transfer the prawns to the pan of glaze using tongs, then squeeze in the grilled lemon (making sure to avoid adding the pips). Toss a couple of times to coat, then carefully add to the top of the salad, drizzling the excess sauce in and around the platter.

Tear over the basil leaves, then serve with the garlicky focaccia.
