Celebrating Easter Around the World: A Tapestry of Cultures and Traditions Easter, a festival celebrated by millions around the world, is a time of joy, renewal, and diverse cultural expressions. While rooted in Christian traditions, Easter has evolved over centuries, blending with various customs and beliefs from different cultures. This inclusive celebration reflects the rich tapestry of global traditions that come together during this special time of the year.

Easter, a celebration of resurrection and renewal, weaves together a global tapestry of diverse traditions. Embracing the inclusive spirit of the season, people from various cultures contribute to the richness and beauty of Easter festivities. Whether through religious rituals, egg-painting, or playful customs, the shared joy of Easter transcends borders, fostering understanding and unity in our multicultural world. 1. Western Christian Traditions:

4. Passover and Jewish Traditions:

In Western Christian cultures, Easter is a central religious event commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Holy Week, beginning with Palm Sunday and culminating in Easter Sunday, involves various rituals, including church services, processions, and the symbolic act of dyeing and decorating eggs. The Easter Bunny, a beloved figure in Western cultures, is known for delivering colourful eggs, chocolates, and treats to children.

Easter coincides with the Jewish festival of Passover, creating a unique intersection of traditions. Passover commemorates the Israelites’ liberation from slavery, and the Last Supper, a key event in Christian theology, is believed to have been a Passover Seder. Many Jewish families and communities engage in both Passover and Easter celebrations, fostering unity and understanding.

2. Eastern Christian Traditions:

5. Sweden’s Easter Witch Tradition:

In Eastern Orthodox Christianity, Easter, or Pascha, is celebrated with unique customs. The liturgical practices and traditions associated with Holy Week and Easter Sunday vary from those in Western Christianity. The midnight Resurrection service, known as the Midnight Office, is a significant event, followed by the sharing of a special Easter meal. The cracking of red eggs symbolise the triumph of life over death.

In Sweden, Easter takes on a playful and whimsical note with the celebration of Påskkärringar or Easter Witches. Children dress up as witches, donning broomsticks and colourful scarves, and go door-to-door, exchanging drawings and paintings for sweets. This tradition blends folklore, fantasy, and community interaction.

3. Pagan Influences:

In Australia, the Easter Bilby has become an ecofriendly alternative to the Easter Bunny. With the aim of raising awareness about the endangered bilby species, chocolate bilbies have replaced traditional Easter bunnies. This unique initiative highlights the importance of conservation and environmental stewardship during the festive season.

Easter’s timing is closely linked to the spring equinox, leading to the incorporation of various pagan traditions. The egg, representing fertility and rebirth, is a common motif across cultures. In many Eastern European countries, eggpainting is a cherished tradition, with intricate designs and vibrant colours. In Greece, a game called “tsougrisma” involves cracking eggs to symbolise the breaking of Christ’s tomb.

DATES TO REMEMBER

Nestled along the sun-soaked coastline of the Costa del Sol, expatriates have the unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich cultural tapestry of Spain. One of the most captivating and widely celebrated traditions in this region is Semana Santa, or Holy Week. This annual event is deeply rooted in religious significance, offering expats a chance to witness and participate in a centuries-old spectacle that defines the essence of Spanish identity. Origins of Semana Santa: Semana Santa traces its origins back to mediaeval Spain, with roots firmly embedded in Catholicism. The tradition gained prominence during the 16th century and has since become one of the most significant and elaborate religious events in the country. The observance revolves around the commemoration of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, with each day of Holy Week representing a different stage of this sacred narrative.

Celebrating the Passion: Semana Santa kicks off on Palm Sunday, known as Domingo de Ramos, where the faithful gather in churches across the Costa del Sol to receive blessed palm fronds. These fronds are believed to bring protection and good fortune to households. Throughout the week, intricate processions wind through the narrow streets of coastal towns, featuring religious sculptures and icons adorned with vibrant flowers. The processions are organised by religious brotherhoods, or cofradías, each with its own unique identity and history.

triumphant moment of Christ’s resurrection. Expats will find themselves immersed in a festive atmosphere, complete with traditional music, lively dancing, and delicious local cuisine.

Tips for Expats: For expatriates along the Costa del Sol, embracing the Semana Santa traditions offers a unique and enriching experience. Here are some tips to make the most of this cultural celebration:

1. Plan Ahead: Research the schedule of processions in your local area and plan your activities accordingly. Many towns along the Costa del Sol have their own unique customs and events.

2. Respect Local Customs: Semana Santa is a deeply religious event for many locals. Show respect by refraining from loud activities, wearing appropriate attire, and participating in the processions with a sense of reverence.

3. Indulge in Culinary Delights:

Good Friday, or Viernes Santo, is a particularly solemn day when processions become a poignant representation of Christ’s sacrifice. The atmosphere is contemplative, with hooded penitents carrying crosses, candles, and religious symbols, accompanied by mournful music echoing through the streets.

Take advantage of the festive atmosphere to savour traditional Spanish dishes. Local markets and eateries often feature special Semana Santa treats, allowing expats to explore the diverse flavours of the region.

Easter Sunday and Resurrection:

Don’t forget to capture the vibrant colours and emotions of the processions through photography. Just ensure that your presence is respectful and considerate of the solemnity of the occasion.

As Holy Week progresses, the sombre tone shifts to one of joy and celebration on Easter Sunday, or Domingo de Resurrección. The streets come alive with colourful processions, marking the

Protect Your Ride: Preventing Vehicle Theft on the Costa del Sol Living in the sun-drenched paradise of the Costa del Sol comes with its perks, but unfortunately, vehicle theft isn’t uncommon in this region. English-speaking expats, like yourself, need to be aware of the various methods thieves employ to steal cars and take proactive steps to safeguard their vehicles. Key Theft

Key Cloning

One of the most prevalent methods of vehicle theft on the Costa del Sol involves stealing the vehicle’s keys. This can happen through unauthorised entry into homes, where keys are taken, or even in public places where keys are left unattended or easily accessible to thieves.

Vehicle thieves on the Costa del Sol have been known to employ cunning tactics, such as key cloning.

Relay Attacks Keyless car theft, also known as “relay theft,” is a sophisticated method used by thieves to steal vehicles without needing the physical key. With electronic devices, they intercept signals from keyless entry car fobs, often from outside your home.

ByPassing Security Thieves target specific vulnerabilities in popular car brands, such as Range Rovers, Toyotas, and Lexuses. For example, Range Rovers can be stolen in under a minute due to a flaw in their internal wiring. Similarly, exploiting vulnerabilities in the headlight ECU of Toyota and Lexus models allows thieves to bypass security systems effortlessly.

Page 14 | www.costalinkmagazine.com

Securing Your Vehicle: The most straightforward method to safeguard your car is through the installation of a pin-based immobiliser. These discrete devices are invisible to the naked eye and offer robust defence against key theft and cloning. Additionally, we are proud to be the exclusive certified installers of Pandora Alarms in the Costa Del Sol region, providing a level of protection that is significantly more advanced. It’s A Funny Old World:

Easter Bunny? n Germany, the Easter Hare (Osterhase) is mentioned in writings as early as the 17th century. German immigrants to the United States in the 1700s took the tradition of the Easter Hare with them. Children would build nests for the Osterhase, and the hare would then lay coloured eggs in the nests.

I

The idea of the Easter Bunny delivering eggs has become a popular part of the modern Easter celebration in many cultures. The eggs, often decorated and filled with candies or toys, symbolise new life and the resurrection.

Easter & Spring Beauty Trends Unveiled Spring has blossomed, and Easter is just around the corner! As temperatures warm up along the Costa del Sol, it’s time to dive into the realm of fresh, dewy makeup looks. This season, the focus is on enhancing your natural beauty with subtle makeup choices that exude a radiant, barely-there glow.

Page 24 | www.costalinkmagazine.com

BEAUTY

Easter presents the ideal opportunity to embrace these trends and pamper yourself with a session with a freelance Makeup Artist. Here, we present five expert-approved makeup tips to guide you through the spring season.

5 Beauty Tips for Easter & Spring 1. Skin Tints Bid farewell to heavy layers of foundation and embrace the lightweight allure of skin tints. These versatile products, akin to tinted moisturisers, not only provide coverage but also nourish your skin, imparting a radiant glow. Offering a sheerer coverage compared to traditional foundations, skin tints accentuate your natural features, delivering a ‘your skin but better’ appearance.

2. Eyes Take Centre Stage With face masks being a staple accessory, all eyes are on, well, your eyes! While smoky eyeshadow looks dominate the autumn and winter trends, spring calls for a more minimalist approach. Consult your makeup artist for a classic black winged eyeliner, keeping it subtle with a thin line for a natural look. Alternatively, opt for a dramatic cat-eye for an eye-catching Easter ensemble.

3. Luscious Lashes Elevate your mascara game to complement your eyeliner. Fuller lashes are the aim of the game! Reserve the elaborate falsies for special occasions and instead opt for a mascara that provides a natural lash lift. For an extra treat, consider indulging in an eyelash extension treatment with your makeup artist for effortlessly voluminous lashes.

4. Subtle Lip Stains As part of the trend towards natural beauty, it’s time to set aside your liquid lipsticks. Embrace a more understated look with lip stains, imparting a healthy flush of colour to your lips. Not only do lip stains offer long-lasting colour, but they also minimise smudging – perfect for those Easter Zoom gatherings. These hydrating stains offer a skinimalist approach, doubling up as a lip treatment for nourished lips.

5. Radiant Dewy Glow If there’s one trend to embrace this spring and Easter, it’s the coveted dewy skin look. Achieving this luminous glow begins with a focused skincare routine. Start with a double cleanse to achieve a smooth skin texture and eliminate dead skin cells. Keeping your skin hydrated is key to ensuring your foundation applies seamlessly. Hydrating products work wonders in imparting a natural radiance and brightening your complexion. Consult your makeup artist for techniques to enhance your glow, whether it’s through a champagne-inspired highlighter or a brightening serum applied to your cheekbones.

Spanish Firsts and Inventions Sherry (Jerez) Sherry, as a style of fortified wine, originated in Spain’s Andalusia region in particular from the town of Jerez de la Frontera, hence its Spanish name Jerez, during the Moorish rule in the 8th century. The process of making sherry-like wines in the area likely predates this period, but it was during the Moorish occupation that the techniques for fortifying and ageing wines were refined and established, leading to the creation of what we now know as Sherry. By the 16th century sherry was being exported globally, especially to South America and England.

HEALTH & FITNESS

1. Plant-Based Diets:

4. Holistic Wellness Retreats:

One of the prevailing health trends in Spain during Easter 2024 is the rise of plant-based diets. Many individuals are choosing to incorporate more fruits, vegetables, legumes, and plant-based proteins into their meals. This shift towards plant-based eating is not only driven by a concern for personal health but also by a growing awareness of environmental sustainability. Traditional Easter dishes are being reimagined with plant-based alternatives, providing a healthier and cruelty-free option for those celebrating the holiday.

As an alternative way to celebrate Easter, some individuals in Spain are opting for holistic wellness retreats. These retreats often include a combination of mindful eating, yoga, meditation, and outdoor activities, providing a rejuvenating experience for both the body and mind. This trend reflects a desire for a more holistic approach to health during festive seasons.

2. Mindful Eating Practices: In the midst of Easter celebrations, there is a growing emphasis on mindful eating practices. Spain has a rich culinary heritage, and people are now savouring each bite with a heightened awareness of taste, texture, and satisfaction. Mindful eating promotes a healthier relationship with food, encouraging individuals to appreciate the cultural significance of Easter meals while being conscious of portion sizes and nutritional content.

3. Local and Seasonal Produce: Easter 2024 sees a surge in the popularity of local and seasonal produce. Spaniards are recognising the importance of supporting local farmers and businesses while enjoying the freshest, most nutrient-rich ingredients. Easter feasts are adorned with colourful arrays of fruits and vegetables sourced from nearby regions, adding both nutritional value and a sense of community to the festivities.

5. Functional Foods and Superfoods: Incorporating functional foods and superfoods into Easter menus is gaining traction. Nutrient-dense ingredients such as quinoa, chia seeds, and kale are being used creatively in traditional dishes, enhancing their nutritional profiles. This trend aligns with the growing awareness of the impact of diet on overall well-being and is indicative of a shift towards a more health-conscious population. This Easter, Spain is witnessing a transformation in the way people approach their health and well-being. From embracing plant-based diets and mindful eating practices to supporting local farmers and exploring holistic wellness retreats, the health trends during Easter 2024 reflect a growing commitment to personal wellness and sustainability. As Spaniards celebrate the joyous occasion, they are also mindful of nurturing their bodies and minds, setting the stage for a healthier and more vibrant future.

Recipe Pestiños (Honeyed Pastries)

This confection is a popular treat during Easter and the Holy Week in Andalusia. Its preparation is straightforward, requiring a mixture of flour, yeast, cinnamon, orange juice, and sesame to form a pastry. Following this, the pastry is prepared by frying. Once fried, it is customary to garnish these pastries with honey or sugar.

Page 50 | www.costalinkmagazine.com

FOOD & DRINK

Method Step By Step : 1. Prepare the Dough:

4. Top with Honey or Sugar:

In a large mixing bowl, combine 500 grams of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of active dry yeast, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and a pinch of salt.

While the pestiños are still warm, drizzle them with honey or sprinkle sugar over the top.

Add the orange zest to the dry ingredients, followed by 240 ml of fresh orange juice. Slowly drizzle in 120 ml of olive oil while mixing continuously until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic. Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for at least 30 minutes to allow the yeast to work.

2. Shape the Pestiños: After the dough has rested, divide it into small portions and roll each portion into a thin rectangle or oval shape. You can use a knife or a pastry cutter to shape the edges neatly. Optionally, sprinkle sesame seeds on top of each piece, pressing them gently into the dough.

3. Fry the Pestiños: In a deep pan or fryer, heat vegetable oil to 180°C. Carefully place the shaped pestiños into the hot oil, frying them until they turn golden brown on both sides. This should take about 2-3 minutes per side.

Allow the honey or sugar to set for a few minutes before serving.

5. Serve and Enjoy: Pestiños are best enjoyed fresh. Serve them at room temperature and savour the delicious flavours of this traditional Andalusian treat. These pestiños make a delightful addition to your Semana Santa celebrations or any special occasion. Enjoy!

Strange But True: Why Isn’t Easter On The Same Date?

Page 52 | www.costalinkmagazine.com

Easter’s varying date is distinct from fixed holidays like Christmas or Halloween, as it doesn’t adhere to a specific calendar day. The dynamic nature of Easter is rooted in its connection to Passover, a Jewish festival commemorating the Israelites’ liberation from Egypt. Easter falls on the first Sunday following the first full moon after the vernal equinox, typically between March 22 and April 25. This calculation aligns with the lunar calendar, linking Easter’s timing to the moon’s phases. The lunar-based system ensures that Easter maintains a symbolic connection with spring, reflecting themes of rebirth and renewal.

Catering to Canine Tastes: 4 Tips for Feeding Picky Pets on the Costa del Sol Living along the stunning Costa del Sol with your furry companions is undoubtedly a rewarding experience, but the challenges of meeting the dietary preferences of picky pets can sometimes dampen the joy. Just like humans, dogs can be discerning about their food, and pet parents often find it challenging to navigate their evolving tastes and dietary needs. If you’re facing the dilemma of a finicky furry friend or dealing with signs of a sensitive stomach, fret not! Here are four tips to ensure your pets thrive on the Costa del Sol:

Page 58 | www.costalinkmagazine.com

FAMILY & PETS

1. Opt for Locally Sourced and Fresh Ingredients:

2. Experiment with High-Quality Pet Food Brands:

One of the advantages of living along the Costa del Sol is the abundance of fresh and locally sourced produce. Leverage this by incorporating fresh fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins into your pet’s diet. Not only are these options rich in essential nutrients, but they also add variety to your pet’s meals. Local markets often offer a plethora of options that can cater to your pet’s taste buds and contribute to their overall wellbeing.

Investing in high-quality pet food can make a significant difference in addressing the dietary needs of picky pets. There are various brands that specialise in premium, well-balanced pet nutrition, and exploring these options can help you find a formula that suits your pet’s preferences. Look for options that prioritise natural ingredients and provide a balanced blend of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Many pet stores along the Costa del Sol offer a diverse range of such products to cater to the discerning tastes of your four-legged companions.

3. Introduce Homemade Treats and Meals:

4. Monitor and Adjust Diet According to Sensitivities:

Adding a personal touch to your pet’s meals can make a world of difference. Consider preparing homemade treats and meals using pet-friendly recipes that align with their dietary requirements. This allows you to control the ingredients and tailor the meals to suit your pet’s taste preferences. Include ingredients like plain cooked meats, rice, and vegetables in their diet. Not only does this add a variety of textures and flavours, but it also gives you the opportunity to bond with your pet over shared meals.

Just like humans, pets can develop sensitivities or allergies to certain ingredients. If you notice signs of digestive discomfort, such as vomiting or diarrhoea, it’s essential to consult with a veterinarian. They can help identify potential allergens and recommend suitable dietary adjustments. Being attentive to your pet’s reactions to different foods will enable you to create a diet plan that promotes their well-being and addresses any specific dietary concerns.

Living on the Costa del Sol with your pets should be a delightful experience for both you and your furry friends. By incorporating these tips into your pet’s feeding routine, you can ensure they enjoy a healthy and satisfying diet that caters to their unique tastes and dietary needs.
