Remember, Remember, it’s not just about 5th November… While November is not as busy as the summer months for tourism, there are still some traditional celebrations and events that you might find in the Costa del Sol region during this time of year, that are much more than the traditional UK 5th November celebrations… Here we give you some November suggestions that you may want to investigate further…

Page 8 | www.costalinkmagazine.com

EXPERIENCES

All Saints’ Day (Día de Todos los Santos):

Dia de la Tostá:

November 1st is a national holiday in Spain, including the Costa del Sol. It’s a day for families to remember and honour their deceased loved ones. People often visit cemeteries to clean and decorate graves, and some may attend special church services.

In some villages in the Costa del Sol region, there is a tradition of celebrating “Dia de la Tostá” in November. This event involves roasting chestnuts (castañas) and sweet potatoes (boniatos) over open fires. Locals and visitors come together to enjoy these seasonal treats.

San Andrés Fair (Feria de San Andrés):

Art and Cultural Events:

This fair typically takes place in the city of Málaga during the last week of November, around the feast day of San Andrés (St. Andrew). It features traditional Andalusian music, dance, food, and entertainment. You can enjoy flamenco performances, sample local cuisine, and join in the festive atmosphere.

Costa del Sol has a thriving arts and cultural scene. Throughout the year, you can find art exhibitions, music concerts, and theatre performances taking place in various towns along the coast. Check local event listings for specific November events in the arts and culture scene.

Olive Harvest: November is the harvest season for olives in the Costa del Sol region. While this isn’t a celebration in the traditional sense, you might find local olive mills and cooperatives open to the public, offering tours and tastings. It’s an opportunity to learn about the olive oil production process and sample some of the finest olive oils in the area.

Beach Walks: While November may not be the ideal time for swimming, the Costa del Sol’s beaches are still a beautiful place to take long walks and enjoy the tranquil Mediterranean views. The weather in November is typically mild and pleasant for outdoor activities.

Please note that the specific events and celebrations in the Costa del Sol region can vary from year to year and from one town to another. It’s a good idea to check with local tourism boards or event calendars closer to your visit to get up-to-date information on any traditional celebrations or festivals happening in the area during November.

Expat Guidance on Health, Life, and Income Insurance Risk protection cover is essential for many reasons and will defend your assets and ensure that they are safeguarded for future generations, whatever occurs.

he best way to ensure your coverage is sufficient and avoid over or under-insuring yourself is to work with an established expat specialist, delivering personal advice with a background of years of expertise.

T

Some existing policies may transcend borders and remain valid if you relocate during the term, provided the premiums are kept up to date. However, there are vast variances in the health coverage supplied depending on your country of residence. Medical insurance is often compulsory for foreign national residents. Still, that cover needs to be robust, especially in regions where private medical costs for serious illnesses or accidents can incur considerable sums. Much depends on your residency status and whether you wish to insure: A particular asset or portfolio of assets and investments. Your health, life, or that of your entire family. Businesses and other entities or securities. Age remains a crucial factor, with international life insurance generally restricted to age 69. There are more bespoke products with flexible terms that can cater to expats of all ages, with financial advice required to assess the cost vs risk protection benefits to ensure the premiums are an efficient option. Chase Buchanan is pleased to deliver a comprehensive range of expat financial advisory services, including private consultations on every aspect of income protection. Amplify Autumn Appeal: 5 Home Renovation Projects to Tackle this Autumn With lower temperatures and milder conditions on the Costa del Sol, November provides a perfect opportunity to tackle that home renovation to-do list. Whether you plan on making minor improvements or wholesale changes are on the horizon, taking on a few DIY projects can help you boost your home’s appeal (and its value) while also preparing for colder weather in the days ahead.

Page 14 | www.costalinkmagazine.com

1. Cosy Up with Warm Colours As the leaves outside change their hues, why not bring some warmth indoors? A fresh coat of paint in rich, autumn-inspired colours can instantly transform the atmosphere in your home. Think deep reds, earthy browns, and warm oranges. These shades not only add a touch of cosiness but also make your space feel inviting during the chilly months.

2. Revamp Your Lighting With shorter days approaching, it’s essential to have well-lit spaces. Swap out your old light fixtures for ones that complement your interior design and provide ample illumination. Consider adding floor and table lamps to create cosy reading nooks and enhance the overall ambiance.

3. Create a Focal Point with a Fireplace Nothing says “autumn charm” quite like a fireplace. If you don’t have one, fear not! You can easily create a faux fireplace with a mantel and electric insert. For those with a real fireplace, a fresh layer of paint or a new mantel can work wonders. Arrange some candles and decorative logs to complete the cosy look.

4. Upgrade Your Textiles Autumn is all about texture. Swap out lightweight summer fabrics with plush throws, cosy blankets, and soft cushions. Opt for materials like wool, fleece, and faux fur to add warmth and comfort to your living spaces. Drape these textiles over your sofas and chairs to create an inviting atmosphere.

5. Rejuvenate Your Outdoor Space Autumn isn’t just about indoor renovations. Spruce up your outdoor area with a few simple touches. Add some weatherresistant seating and cushions to create a cosy outdoor retreat. Don’t forget to include some autumn-inspired decorations like pumpkins, wreaths, and warm-coloured outdoor lighting. As the weather cools down and the holiday season approaches, there’s no better time to embark on these DIY home renovation projects. These simple yet effective changes will not only amplify the autumn appeal of your home but also enhance its overall value. Plus, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy the cosy comfort of your updated living spaces as you embrace the colder weather ahead. So, roll up your sleeves, gather your tools, and let the autumn home makeover begin!

“Land really is the best art” Andy Warhol Environmental artwork is a contemporary art movement that includes eco-art, earth art, land art, art in nature and art using recycled waste products. It’s aim is to activate change and raise awareness about environmental issues. It includes artistic works that are intended to enhance or become part of the environment or make a statement on ecological issues.

AURORA ROBSON is a Canadian American multi media artist who up cycles reclaimed waste to fashion her stunning sculpture. She organises litter collection events in natural spaces in order to reduce the amount of plastic in the environment. She has created a website Project Vortex which exhibits the work of an international collective of like-minded artists. Through this medium she highlights the insidious epidemic of single use plastics, which creates islands of debris in the oceans of the world.

ECO ART

MARINA DEBRIS is an Australian based artist who focuses on reusing trash to raise awareness of ocean and beach pollution. She makes garments and sculptures, “trashion”, “fish tanks” and other decorative art from washed up sea plastic collected from her local beaches. She is a social activist and fund raiser for environmental organisations and art education.

VANESSA BARRAGAO is a Portuguese artist who creates three dimensional art inspired by the coral reef system. Her work is hand-crafted using textiles techniques such as weaving, knitting, felting and crochet. She mimics organic textures and shapes in order to emphasise and highlight the fragility and diversity of nature’s ecosystems and the beauty of the underwater world of flora and fauna.

ALYSSA K is a Korean-American artist who designs sculptured wall hangings from yarn and rovings, hand dyed with natural vegetable pigment. The fibre based work is reminiscent of floral bouquets and patches of wild flowers. The perpetually blooming art blends multiple textiles techniques such as macrame, needle felting and crochet. Spanish Firsts and Inventions Spectacles In the annals of history, there are unsung heroes who’ve changed the way we see the world, quite literally. Enter Abbas ibn Frinas, the genius from 10th century Andalusia, who gave the world the gift of eyeglasses. Picture this: a time when squinting was all the rage, and reading meant deciphering hieroglyphics from a mile away. But Abbas, with his knack for invention, said, “No ni ná!” He conjured colourless glass and turned it into “reading stones,” AKA magnifying lenses. Thanks to him, we can now see clearly while looking like stylish scholars. So, the next time you slip on your specs, remember the man who made it all possible, Abbas ibn Frinas, the true visionary of vision!

It’s A Funny Old World:

Marla, Toddler Picasso? nce upon a time, in New York, there was a local coffee shop that decided to jazz up its decor with some wildly abstract paintings. As the vibrant strokes of paint danced on the walls, curious patrons couldn’t help but wonder: Who was the brilliant artist behind these masterpieces, and could they snag one for the peculiarly precise price of $253?

O

Hold on to your espresso cups, folks, because the answer for the artistic genius responsible for these mesmerising creations was none other than Marla Olmstead, a Picasso-in-the-making at the ripe old age of three. That’s right, a toddler was the virtuoso behind these avant-garde wonders.

Page 28 | www.costalinkmagazine.com

But wait, there’s more! The coffee shop had a treat for art aficionados, too. You could actually buy these toddler-crafted treasures for the oddly specific sum of $253. Now, you might be wondering, “How did a threeyear-old’s artwork end up in the spotlight?” Well, my friends, Marla Olmstead wasn’t just a local sensation; she was a full-blown media darling, and the glittering heartthrob of the New York City art scene. Her paintings were commanding prices at auctions that could make your wallet weep tears of envy - over $6,000 for each masterpiece. But here’s where the plot thickens like a gourmet latte foam. The veracity of Marla’s parents’ claims that she conjured these artworks with her unguided, toddler-sized hands became a bigger mystery than the question of who really killed JFK. Was Marla truly a child prodigy, a pint-sized Picasso, or was it all a well-contrived gimmick?

Matt’s Twelve Superb Tips to Effective Weight Loss (For The Last 8 Weeks of the Year!) As the year draws to a close, many of us find ourselves reflecting on the resolutions we made at the beginning of the year, particularly those related to health and fitness. If you’ve been striving to shed those extra pounds, the last 8 weeks of the year present a unique opportunity to make a significant difference. It’s time to finish strong and achieve your weight loss goals before the New Year. Here’s your ultimate guide to effective weight loss in the final stretch of the year.

Page 32 | www.costalinkmagazine.com

HEALTH & FITNESS

1. Set Realistic Goals Begin by setting achievable, realistic weight loss goals for the next 8 weeks. Keep in mind that a safe and sustainable rate of weight loss is around 1-2 pounds per week. So, aiming for 8-16 pounds lost in 8 weeks is reasonable. Setting clear goals helps you stay motivated and focused.

2. Create a Balanced Diet Plan Your diet is a crucial factor in weight loss. Focus on a balanced and healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Reduce your intake of processed foods, sugary drinks, and excessive amounts of unhealthy fats. Consider tracking your calorie intake to ensure you’re in a calorie deficit.

management. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night. A well-rested body is more likely to resist unhealthy cravings and function optimally.

8. Manage Stress Stress can lead to overeating and poor food choices. Implement stress-reduction techniques like meditation, deep breathing, or yoga to help you stay calm and focused on your goals.

9. Seek Support Consider joining a weight loss group or partnering with a friend who has similar goals. Having a support system can provide motivation and accountability.

10. Track Your Progress

3. Meal Preparation Preparing your meals in advance can be a gamechanger. It allows you to control the ingredients and portions, making it easier to stick to your diet plan. Cook your meals for the week on Sundays, so you have healthy options readily available.

Keep a journal of your weight loss journey. Document your daily food intake, exercise routines, and how you feel throughout the process. Regularly reviewing your progress can help you make necessary adjustments and celebrate your successes.

4. Stay Hydrated

11. Celebrate Small Achievements

Don’t underestimate the importance of hydration in your weight loss journey. Drinking enough water not only helps control hunger but also aids in the metabolic processes that burn calories. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water daily.

Don’t wait until you reach your final goal to celebrate. Acknowledge and reward yourself for small milestones along the way. This positive reinforcement can boost motivation.

12. Consult a Professional

5. Regular Exercise Incorporate regular exercise into your routine. Aim for a mix of cardiovascular workouts, strength training, and flexibility exercises. Engaging in physical activity boosts metabolism, burns calories, and improves your overall well-being.

6. Consistency is Key To see meaningful results in the last 8 weeks, consistency is paramount. Stick to your diet and exercise plan, even on weekends or during holidays. Don’t let occasional setbacks discourage you; get back on track as soon as possible.

If you’re facing challenges or uncertainties in your weight loss journey, it’s a good idea to consult a healthcare professional or a registered dietitian. They can provide personalised guidance and support.

Here’s to a healthier you in the year’s final stretch!

Cook with Health in Mind Healthy eating doesn’t have to be a daunting task that forces you to bid farewell to your family’s favourite meals. Instead, it can be an exciting journey that enhances your culinary skills while boosting your overall well-being. By making thoughtful choices in the kitchen, you can have full control over the delicious, heart-healthy dishes you serve at your family table.

Page 36 | www.costalinkmagazine.com

HEALTH & FITNESS

Let’s explore how you can cook with health in mind without sacrificing flavour and enjoyment.

keep you feeling full and satisfied, preventing overindulgence. Whole grains also contribute to better heart health by regulating cholesterol levels.

1. Start with Smart Ingredient Selection:

5. Desserts Can Be Healthy Too:

One of the secrets to creating healthy yet delicious meals is to choose quality ingredients. Opt for lean proteins like skinless chicken breasts or fish. In our case, a Grilled Tequila-Lime Chicken recipe is not only flavorful but also a lean source of protein. Pair it with Grilled Asparagus to add a burst of nutrients to your plate. Asparagus is rich in vitamins, fibre, and antioxidants, making it an excellent choice for promoting heart health.

Healthy eating doesn’t mean skipping dessert altogether. Treat yourself and your family to Frozen Yogurt Bark for a delightful and hearthealthy sweet ending. Greek yoghurt is packed with protein and probiotics, and when combined with fresh fruits and a drizzle of honey, it becomes a guilt-free indulgence.

2. Mindful Cooking Methods: The way you prepare your meals can make a significant difference in their nutritional value. Grilling, baking, steaming, and sautéing with minimal oil are healthier alternatives to frying. Grilling, in particular, imparts a unique smoky flavour to your dishes without the need for excessive fats.

3. Season with Flavour, Not Sodium: Healthy cooking doesn’t mean bland food. Use a variety of herbs, spices, and citrus fruits to season your dishes. The Tequila-Lime marinade in our chicken recipe adds a zesty kick without relying on excessive salt. Reducing sodium intake is vital for maintaining heart health, so experiment with flavours that tickle your taste buds without harming your arteries.

6. Portion Control: Finally, remember that portion control plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy diet. It’s not about depriving yourself but rather about enjoying everything in moderation. Savour the flavours and take your time during meals to avoid overeating. By selecting nutritious ingredients, employing mindful cooking techniques, and incorporating whole foods, you can create dishes that are as good for your heart as they are for your taste buds. So, put on your chef’s hat, embrace these tips, and let the delicious, heart-healthy cooking begin. Your family will thank you for it! Our Grilled Tequila-Lime Chicken recipe can be found on page 48.

4. Incorporate Whole Grains: When planning your meals, consider swapping out refined grains for whole grains. Whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, and whole wheat pasta provide essential nutrients and fibre. They

FOOD & DRINK

Cooking Method:

Ingredients:

Step 1.

For the Marinade

In a bowl, combine the minced garlic, tequila, lime zest, lime juice, olive oil, ground cumin, paprika, chilli powder, salt, pepper, and chopped coriander. This will be your marinade.

Step 2. Place the chicken breasts in a resealable plastic bag or a shallow dish and pour the marinade over them. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to marinate. For best results, marinate for 2-4 hours or overnight.

Step 3. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat (around 200-220°C).

Step 4. Remove the chicken from the marinade and let any excess marinade drip off.

Step 5. Oil the grill grates to prevent sticking. Place the chicken breasts on the grill and cook for about 6-8 minutes per side, or until they are no longer pink in the centre and have nice grill marks.

Step 6. While grilling, baste the chicken with any remaining marinade to keep it moist and flavorful.

Step 7. Once the chicken is cooked through and has reached an internal temperature of 75°C, remove it from the grill and let it rest for a few minutes.

Step 8. Garnish the grilled tequila-lime chicken with lime wedges and fresh chopped cilantro. Serve your delicious Grilled Tequila-Lime Chicken with your favourite sides, such as potatoes, rice, grilled vegetables, or a fresh salad.

Enjoy your meal!

Protecting Children in a Digital Age: A Guide for Expat Parents on the Costa del Sol In today’s digital age, children are growing up surrounded by technology. Expat parents on the Costa del Sol face unique challenges when it comes to protecting their children online, especially when they are exploring Spanish websites or interacting in a language they may not fully understand. Ensuring their online safety is paramount. Here are some useful tips for safeguarding your children:

Page 54 | www.costalinkmagazine.com

FAMILY & PETS

1. Open Communication: Start by having open and honest conversations with your children about internet safety. Explain the potential risks and dangers they may encounter online, including language barriers on Spanish websites. Encourage them to come to you with any concerns.

2. Parental Controls: Utilise parental control software and settings on devices and browsers to filter content and set limits on screen time. These controls can help prevent access to inappropriate websites and apps.

3. Educate Yourself: Familiarise yourself with the online spaces your children frequent, including social media platforms, apps, and websites. This knowledge will enable you to guide them effectively.

4. Supervise Online Activities: For younger children, consider keeping their devices in common areas of the house where you can monitor their online activities. For older kids, establish rules for responsible internet use.

5. Teach Responsible Behaviour: Emphasise the importance of responsible online behaviour, such as not sharing personal information, being cautious when communicating with strangers, and reporting any suspicious or uncomfortable interactions.

6. Online Privacy: Teach your children to protect their privacy online by using strong, unique passwords and avoiding oversharing personal information on social media or in chats.

7. Language Support:

8. Online Etiquette: Teach kids about online etiquette, emphasising the importance of treating others with respect and kindness, regardless of language or cultural differences.

9. Stay Informed: Keep up-to-date with the latest online trends and potential risks. Attend workshops, read articles, and join online forums or groups for parents to share information and experiences.

10. Lead by Example: Be a positive role model for your children by demonstrating responsible online behaviour and setting a good example. Show them how to use technology as a tool for learning and connecting rather than as a source of distraction.

11. Report and Block: Encourage your children to report any inappropriate content or cyberbullying incidents they encounter. Teach them how to block and report users who engage in harmful behaviour.

12. Regular Check-Ins: Schedule regular check-ins with your children to discuss their online experiences, address any concerns, and ensure they feel comfortable approaching you with any issues. In a digital age where language barriers can add an extra layer of complexity, expat parents on the Costa del Sol must prioritise their children’s online safety. By fostering open communication, using parental controls, and staying informed, you can help your children navigate the digital world responsibly and securely, whether they are exploring Spanish websites or engaging with international content. Together, we can create a safer online environment for our children.

If your children are exploring Spanish websites or interacting with Spanish-speaking peers, offer language support. Encourage them to ask for help when they encounter content they don’t fully understand.

4 Ways to Keep Your Cat’s Cool in Check Cat lovers know that cats are cool – sometimes too cool. They can be hard to impress, and snuggles might have to be on their terms. However, there are ways to keep that cool in check so cat parents can bond with their four-legged friends. As an expat living on the sunny Costa del Sol, you’ll want to make sure your feline companion stays relaxed and happy amidst the sun and siestas.

Page 58 | www.costalinkmagazine.com

FAMILY & PETS

Here are four fun and effective ways to do just that: 1. Create a Purrfect Oasis In the scorching Spanish summers, your cat needs a cool oasis to beat the heat. Set up a designated area with plenty of shade, fresh water, and comfortable spots for your furry friend to lounge. Consider placing a small kiddie pool filled with shallow, cool water for them to dip their paws into. This can provide a refreshing break from the heat. Adding some cat-safe plants like catnip or cat grass can also make their oasis extra enticing.

2. Siesta Time Just like the locals, cats on the Costa del Sol appreciate a good siesta. Cats are crepuscular, meaning they are most active during dawn and dusk. Encourage your cat to rest during the hottest part of the day by providing a cosy, quiet spot inside where they can nap. You can even close the curtains or blinds to keep the sun out, making it extra appealing for a midday catnap.

3. Play the Spanish Way

little outdoor playtime, but it’s essential to avoid the scorching sun. Plan play sessions during the cooler hours of the morning or evening. Feather toys, laser pointers, and interactive puzzle feeders can engage your cat’s natural instincts and provide much-needed mental stimulation.

4. Ice Cream for Cats Beat the heat with a kitty-friendly frozen treat. Freeze some chicken or tuna broth in ice cube trays, or blend it with a little water and freeze it in silicone moulds. These cool, tasty treats can help your cat stay hydrated while enjoying a delicious snack. Just be sure to keep an eye on them to prevent brain freeze! Keeping your cat’s cool in check on the Costa del Sol is all about creating a comfortable environment and adjusting to the local pace of life. By providing a cool oasis, encouraging siestas, playing during cooler hours, and treating your cat to some ice-cold snacks, you’ll ensure your feline friend remains relaxed and content, making your expat life in Spain even more enjoyable for both of you. So, embrace the Spanish way of life with your cool cat and savour every moment together on the sunshine coast!

Spaniards love their leisurely walks and outdoor activities. Similarly, your cat can benefit from a
