Expat Top Tips - Eight Essential Items for Your Vehicle in Spain

Expats residing on the Costa del Sol must adhere to Spanish legal requirements when driving. They must carry a valid driver’s licence, vehicle registration documents, and proof of insurance. Additionally, it’s mandatory to have a warning triangle, re昀氀ective jacket, and spare wheel or tire repair kit in the vehicle. Failure to comply can result in 昀椀nes. Familiarising yourself with Spanish road laws ensures a safe and legal driving experience for expats enjoying the sunny roads of Costa del Sol.

Page 10 | www.costalinkmagazine.com COSTALINK MAGAZINE

In adherence to Spanish regulations and for practical preparedness, it’s crucial to have specific documents and items on hand while driving. Here’s what you need:

1. Driver’s Licence:

This serves as both identification and validation of your driving eligibility. Ensure it’s valid and suited to the vehicle type. Alternatively, notarized copies or the MiDGT app can be used.

2. Vehicle Registration Documents:

Include the Permiso de Circulación and Ficha Técnica, proving vehicle ownership and details. Notarized copies or the MiDGT app are acceptable alternatives.

3. ITV Certi昀椀cate and Windscreen Sticker:

Demonstrates compliance with technical inspections, mandatory for cars over 4 years old. Renewal frequency varies based on vehicle age.

4. Insurance:

Proof of mandatory vehicle insurance, covering at least third-party liability. Keep a copy of the insurance receipt handy.

5. European Accident Form:

Facilitates accident reporting for amicable settlements, standardised across Europe.

6. Re昀氀ective Jackets:

For safety during breakdowns or accidents, accessible from inside the vehicle.

7. Warning Triangles/ Emergency Light:

Alerts other drivers in case of vehicle stoppage. V16 light signals can replace triangles from July 2021, becoming mandatory from January 1, 2026.

8. Spare Tyre/Repair Kit:

For replacing flat tyres, including a jack and wheel brace or repair kit.

Additional Recommended Items:

9. First Aid Kit & Fire Extinguisher:

Not mandatory but recommended for emergency situations.

10. Lights & Bulbs:

Carry spare bulbs to ensure operational vehicle lights, though not legally required.

Non-compliance may result in fines and legal repercussions. Thus, maintaining updated documents and items is crucial for both legal adherence and road safety in Spain.

It’s A Funny Old World: Cleopatra Wasn’t Egyptian

Arguably the most famous “Egyptian” human to ever live wasn’t even Egyptian a昀琀er all.

Renowned as an iconic figure in history, Cleopatra, often associated with Egypt, surprisingly hailed from Greek lineage. Being the final reigning monarch of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, she wielded significant influence. Descending from Ptolemy I Soter, a prominent Greek general and confidant of Alexander the Great, Cleopatra embodied the blending of Greek and Egyptian cultures during her reign. This connection to Alexander’s empire underscores her historical significance, highlighting the intricate interplay between Greek and Egyptian civilizations during antiquity.

Turn Daily Routines Into Your Personal ‘Summer Fit’ Circuit!

As the Costa del Sol basks in the anticipation of another scorching summer, expats 昀椀nd themselves gearing up for sun-soaked days and leisurely beach strolls. But amidst the excitement, there’s o昀琀en the lingering concern of shedding those extra Christmas and Easter indulgences.

In the quest for a summer-ready physique, here are five tried-and-tested tips tailormade for our expat community who don’t “do” gym along the coast:

You might be surprised to hear that only 15-20% of our overall daily calorie expenditure comes from exercise with the remainder coming from non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT).

To increase our NEAT and burn more calories during the day we need to consciously move more in mundane activities, here are some tips:

Park further away from the shops –park as far away from the supermarket as possible as this usually helps get a few extra hundred steps in a day.

Daily step count – Having a daily step count (not including working out) is a great way to include some low steady state cardio into your day. It doesn’t have to be a large number to begin with, aim for 3000 steps and each week increase by 1000 until you’re at 10k.

Taking the stairs rather than the lift – This one may sound simple but in practice can really help burn some extra calories.

Cra昀琀 a Simple Yet E昀昀ective Plan

Navigating through the maze of social media fitness trends can be overwhelming, especially when every other post showcases a di erent workout regime. Simplifying the approach is key. Embracing foundational exercises like squats, deadlifts, and press-ups, which engage multiple muscle groups, proves to be the cornerstone of an e cient workout routine.

In a region blessed with stunning landscapes, integrating outdoor activities such as beachside workouts or hillside hikes not only adds variety but also capitalises on the picturesque surroundings. Keeping the plan straightforward fostersconsistencyandallowsforbetterprogress tracking. Find five of your favourite places and get up and go each morning!

Rise and Shine for Early Workouts

With the allure of sunny afternoons and lively evenings, fitting in a workout can often become a challenge. Embracing the early morning hours not only ensures consistency but also kickstarts the day on an energised note. Even a brisk walk along the promenade or a jog through the winding streets can invigorate the senses and set a positive tone for the day ahead.

Consistent E昀昀ort for Better Sleep

Quality sleep is the unsung hero of any fitness journey, aiding in both physical recovery and mental rejuvenation. Amidst the vibrant nightlife and bustling streets, cultivating sleep hygiene becomesparamount.Steeringclearoftelephone, computer, tablet and television screens before bedtime, indulging in calming meditation sessions, and incorporating daily physical activity all contribute to a restful night’s sleep.

Nurture Your Body with Stretching and Massage

In a region where outdoor living is the norm, prioritising post-workout recovery is essential. Implementing a routine of stretching and mobility exercises not only preserves flexibility but also mitigatestheriskofcommoninjuries.Additionally, regular massages serve as a luxurious treat for the body, easing muscle tension and promoting faster recovery.

Embrace Movement in Everyday Life

Beyond structured workouts, embracing movement in daily activities amplifies calorie expenditure and promotes overall well-being. Whether it’s opting for a scenic walk to the market, setting step count goals, or ditching the lift for the stairs, every little e ort contributes to a healthier lifestyle.

In a landscape adorned with palm-fringed beaches and azure waters, the journey to fitness seamlessly intertwines with the vibrant coastal lifestyle.Whileitmaybetemptingtochasefleeting fitness trends, using and adapting normal daily activities whilst adhering to fundamental principles rooted in scientific research ensures lasting and impactful results.

Navigating the Perimenopausal Journey: Recognising Signs and Embracing Change

As women, our bodies embark on a remarkable journey throughout our lives, marked by signi昀椀cant transitions. One such transition that o昀琀en catches many by surprise is perimenopause. O昀琀en overshadowed by its more notorious counterpart, menopause, perimenopause is a vital phase in a woman’s life, signalling the gradual transition towards the cessation of menstruation and the end of reproductive years. Yet, it remains shrouded in mystery for many women, with its signs and e昀昀ects o昀琀en overlooked or misunderstood.

Understanding Perimenopause:

Perimenopause typically occurs in a woman’s late 30s to early 50s, although the exact timing varies for each individual. It is characterised by hormonal fluctuations as the body prepares for menopause, the point at which menstruation ceases entirely. During perimenopause, oestrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate, leading to a range of physical and emotional symptoms that can impact daily life.

Recognising the Signs:

While the symptoms of perimenopause can vary widely from woman to woman, there are common signs to watch out for:

1. Irregular Periods:

One of the hallmark signs of perimenopause is changes in menstrual cycles. Periods may become irregular, shorter, longer, heavier, or lighter than usual.

2. Hot Flashes and Night Sweats:

Fluctuations in hormone levels can trigger sudden feelings of heat, often accompanied by sweating, particularly at night.

3. Mood Swings and Emotional Changes:

Hormonal shifts during perimenopause can contribute to mood swings, irritability, anxiety, and depression.

4. Sleep Disturbances:

Many women experience di culty sleeping during perimenopause, often due to night sweats, hot flashes, or hormonal changes.

5. Vaginal Dryness and Changes in Libido:

Declining oestrogen levels can lead to vaginal dryness, discomfort during intercourse, and changes in sexual desire.

6. Changes in Weight Distribution:

Some women may notice changes in body composition, with weight gain, particularly around the abdomen, becoming more common.

7. Cognitive Changes:

Some women report experiencing forgetfulness, di culty concentrating, or “brain fog” during perimenopause, although more research is needed to understand these cognitive changes fully.

Embracing the Journey:

While perimenopause may bring its challenges, it’s essential to recognise that it is a natural and normal phase of life. By understanding the signs and symptoms, women can better navigate this transition with knowledge and support. Seeking guidance from healthcare professionals can provide personalised strategies for managing symptoms and maintaining overall health and well-being.

Additionally, adopting lifestyle changes can help alleviate some of the discomfort associated with perimenopause. Regular exercise, a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, adequate sleep, stress management techniques such as mindfulness or yoga, and maintaining social connections can all contribute to a smoother transition.

Furthermore, open communication with loved ones and peers can provide invaluable support during this time of change. Sharing experiences, concerns, and coping strategies can help women feel less isolated and more empowered in their journey through perimenopause.

The Secrets of Natural Beauty: Why So Many Men & Women Are Making Their Own Home Remedies

In a world 昀氀ooded with synthetic beauty products promising miraculous results, there’s a growing movement towards natural, homemade remedies. From face masks concocted in kitchens to hair treatments brewed in bathrooms, women (and men) are increasingly turning to age-old ingredients and DIY methods to enhance their beauty routines. But what’s driving this shi昀琀 towards natural beauty, and what are the secrets behind its allure?

Page 34 | www.costalinkmagazine.com COSTALINK MAGAZINE

One of the most compelling reasons for the rise of homemade beauty remedies is the desire for transparency and control over what goes on our skin. With increasing awareness of harmful chemicals present in many commercial products, consumers are becoming more discerning about the ingredients they expose their bodies to. By creating their own beauty concoctions, individuals can ensure that only natural, recognizable components touch their skin, reducing the risk of irritation or adverse reactions.

Moreover, homemade remedies often harness the power of ingredients readily available in the kitchen or garden, making them not only safer but also more cost-e ective alternatives to storebought products. Items like honey, avocado, coconut oil, and oatmeal boast a plethora of skin-loving properties, from moisturising and nourishing to exfoliating and soothing. By utilising these simple yet potent ingredients, individuals can achieve glowing, healthy skin without breaking the bank.

Beyond the practical benefits, there’s an undeniable allure to the ritual of creating one’s own beauty treatments. Mixing ingredients, experimenting with textures, and customising formulas to suit individual needs can be a deeply satisfying and empowering experience. It fosters adeeperconnectionwithone’sbodyandasense of self-care that extends beyond surface-level aesthetics.Inaworldthatoftenencouragesquick fixes and instant gratification, the slow, deliberate process of crafting homemade remedies o ers a refreshing counterbalance.

Furthermore, the trend towards natural beauty aligns with broader cultural shifts towards sustainability and environmental consciousness. Many commercial beauty products come packaged in plastic containers and are filled with synthetic chemicals that can harm the environment during production and disposal. By opting for homemade remedies, individuals can reduce their carbon footprint and minimise waste while still indulging in luxurious self-care rituals.

But perhaps the most significant allure of natural beauty lies in its holistic approach to skincare. While commercial products often target specific skin concerns with potent chemicals, homemade remedies tend to take a gentler, more holistic approach. Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, they aim to nourish and support the skin’s natural balance, promoting overall health and vitality. This holistic mindset extends beyond skincare, emphasising the interconnectedness of body, mind, and environment in achieving true beauty.

In a world inundated with beauty standards and unrealistic expectations, the trend towards natural beauty o ers a refreshing antidote. It celebrates individuality, embraces imperfection, and encourages a deeper, more authentic connection with oneself. Whether it’s mixing up a batch of homemade face scrub or indulging in a relaxingherbalbath, thesecretsofnaturalbeauty lie not only in the ingredients themselves but in the mindful, nurturing practices that accompany them. So next time you’re tempted by the allure of a shiny new beauty product, consider stepping into your kitchen instead. The secret to radiant skin might just be hiding in your cupboards all along.

Hot Chocolate

In the 5th century AD, the Mayans pioneered the use of ground cocoa beans for a beverage with water and chilli powder. Spanish explorers encountered this drink in South America, but found it bitter. They sweetened it with sugar and served it warm. This adaptation led to the popularisation of hot chocolate across Europe and beyond, marking Spain’s significant contribution to its evolution.

The Grass Can Be Greener… What Is The Best Grass for Your Garden in Spain?

Welcome to the perplexing world of grass nomenclature along the sunny shores of Costa del Sol! Here, what you call Bu昀昀alo Grass might just be Grama to your neighbour down the street. And let’s not even get started on the myriad of names this resilient green carpet carries across borders!

Page 40 | www.costalinkmagazine.com COSTALINK MAGAZINE

Picture this: you’re strolling through your backyard oasis, enjoying a siesta on your own personal patch of green, when suddenly you’re confronted with a grass identity crisis. Is it Bu alo? Is it Grama? Or perhaps it’s the elusive “Spanish Grass” that has you scratching your head.

But fear not, intrepid expats! Despite the confusion in nomenclature, there’s one thing we can all agree on: this grass thrives like a champ in our Mediterranean climate. Its ability to shrug o clay soils and alkaline environments makes it the superhero of the turf world. But hold your lawnmowers, amigos, because there’s a catch – come winter, this resilient green warrior dons a cloak of brown, leaving your lawn looking like it’s auditioning for a role in a desert landscape.

Ah, but here’s where the plot thickens! While many a gardening guru might sing praises to the lowmaintenance allure of this coarse-footed grass, the savvy among us know that the real secret to a lush lawn lies in the soil prep game. Sure, Bu alo Grass may be the prom queen of hardy greens, but why settle for brown when you can have green, green, and more green, all year round?

Enter stage left: “Med Green” – the grass of your dreams, dear expats! Resilient, vibrant, and oh-so-green, this beauty requires just a tad more TLC in the soil department, but the payo is worth every spade of e ort. Say goodbye to the winter brown blues and hello to a year-round green paradise!

And here’s the kicker – we’ve got not one, but two varieties of Med Green waiting to transform your lawn into a verdant wonderland. From the sturdy, droughtdefying classic to the compact, slower-growing charmer, the choice is yours, amigos.

So, there you have it, folks – the grass may be greener on the other side, but with a dash of soil prep and a sprinkle of Med Green magic, your slice of Costa del Sol paradise will be the envy of the neighbourhood!

Strange But True: The Spanish National Anthem has no words

The “Marcha Real” is one of only four national anthems in the world (along with those of Bosnia, Herzegovina, Kosovo, and San Marino) to have no o cial lyrics.

Words have been added on a couple of occasions in the past, not least during Franco’s rule in the mid-20th century, but none have lasted. Today, trying to write a set of words that will prove equally acceptable to the country’s diverse population of Castilian Spaniards, Catalans, Basques etc has been wisely left alone.
