Aaaah, it’s New Year and a new decade...the time for fresh starts, resolutions, losing ten pounds, horrendous credit card bills, detoxing and the post Christmas blues. If like me you always seem to make your resolutions in a drunken blur on New Years Eve, just after a hearty rendition of Auld Lang Syne (to which I hasten to add I’m the only one who seems to know the words!) and then have quickly forgotten about them by January the 3rd, then take a look at our easy to keep resolutions in “A Women’s World” on page 8 this month. A Problem with Jack’s Manhood

1972, Joe Miller... with
The story started IN
In 1972, Joe Miller was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Tulsa Junior College. On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Joe approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee, inspected the elephants foot, and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it. As carefully and as gently as he could, Joe worked the wood out with his knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot. The elephant turned to Joe, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments. Joe stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned, and walked away. Joe never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.
Thirty years later, Joe was walking through the Tulsa Zoo with his family. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Joe and his family were standing. The large bull elephant stared at Joe, lifted its front foot off the ground, and then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man. Remembering the encounter in 1972, Joe could not help wondering if this was the same elephant...Joe summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing, and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Joe's legs and slammed him against the railing killing him instantly.
Probably wasn't the same elephant.

Is there really any benefIt to multIvItamIns? nutritional balance that they were initially created for. Large sums of money is spent on marketing the products under the pretence of prevention, immune boosting and well being but very little evidence shows this to be effective. In stark contrast there is an increasingly body of evidence to show that simple plant based supplementation can he highly effective at replenishing nutrient requirements missing from daily diet. If you can believe it Britain’s spent over £500M on multivitamins last year and that number is expected to rise steadily by 5% year on year. This is money that Johns Hopkins nutrition experts say might be better spent on nutrient packed foods like fruit, vegetables, whole grains and plants based products. In an editorial in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine titled “Enough Is Enough: Stop Wasting Money on Vitamin and Mineral Supplements,” Johns Hopkins researchers reviewed evidence about supplements, including three very recent studies: • An analysis of research involving 450,000 people, which found that multivitamins did not reduce risk for heart disease or cancer. • A study that tracked the mental functioning and multivitamin use of 5,947 men for 12 years found that multivitamins did not reduce risk for mental declines such as memory loss or slowed-down thinking. • A study of 1,708 heart attack survivors who took a highdose multivitamin or placebo for up to 55 months. Rates of later heart attacks, heart surgeries and deaths were similar in the two groups. Increasing volumes of research is beginning to show that isolated vitamins and minerals are not the best source of

STRANGE UK LAWS MOST OF WHICH ARE PERMISSIBLE TODAY...
• STATUTE FORBIDDING BEARING OF ARMOUR OF 1313: For any aspiring politician fond of dressing up like a 14th-century knight, this decree is not a welcome one. By law, no person is permitted to enter the house of Parliament while wearing a suit of armor or bearing arms. This statute was enacted during the reign of King Edward II. The law is further supported by the Statute of Northampton of 1328, which allows only certain government agents to carry weapons.
• PROHIBITIONS AND INSPECTIONS ACT OF 1998: This law should be renamed "The Duuuuhhhh Act," as it stipulates that any British national who detonates a nuclear device whether at home or abroad will be subject to life imprisonment. Not yet in force, though the Anti-terrorism, Crime & Security Act of 2001 includes many of its stipulations. So if anyone out there that actually thought detonating a nuclear bomb wasn't a crime, sorry. • METROPOLITAN POLICE ACT, SECTION 54: This section of the 1839 act details a list of "nuisances by persons in thoroughfares," though some of the prohibited offenses seem downright ridiculous. Under this law, citizens are barred from ringing doorbells excessively, sliding on ice, and even flying kites. The act also forbids the singing of "any profane, indecent, or obscene song or ballad, or [the use of] any profane, indecent or obscene language to the annoyance of the inhabitants or passengers."
• POLISH POTATO ORDER OF 2004: makes it illegal for someone to "import into England potatoes which he knows to be or has reasonable cause to suspect to be Polish potatoes".The list of hurdles these spuds must jump through is endless, and they even need their own certificates to prove they're safe to eat.

“I WAS A SECRET DRINKER” With a successful career in a London advertising agency, Trisha looked like she was flying high – but alcohol was her secret addiction and it was rapidly taking her down. Now living on the Costa del Sol, she tells us her story here. “I started round drinking when I was 16, just like my friends at first, but that changed within a few years… My first real sign there was a problem was with food as I was anorexic then bulimic. When I was 20 I started taking slimming tablets and drink was good because if I drank I didn't eat. And so the cycle began. By my early 20s I was drinking secretly. I met the man who became my husband, and we both drank a lot, as did our friends and colleagues, so it seemed to me that everything was okay. We had a baby, but before she was one she tragically died of cot death. She was perfectly healthy, but just didn't wake up one morning. I then drank to numb myself, although I still appeared to be coping on the outside. I went back to work, but I was drinking more and more. Then I started to be sick most mornings. After a blood test it was discovered my liver was damaged. It was suggested I go to a treatment centre.

At the centre, they told me I had to attend Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings. I cried for hours as my opinion of an alcoholic was they were low life and I couldn't be compared like that. But I went and at my first meeting in London I was surprised how well everyone looked, they seemed to have jobs, families … and they were happy. Even so, I didn’t stop immediately and carried on drinking when I left the centre. But six months later as things got progressively worse, I had my last drink – I was 40 and as a party girl I thought my life was over when I stopped drinking, but actually, I was just about to start living a life that gave new hope and self-respect. I still go to AA meetings and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. MINI BANOFFEE PIES Go retro with this easy and ever-popular dessert that's been given a smart dinner party makeover
Ingredients:
•225g Digestive biscuit •120g Butter, melted •1 x 397g Tin Nestlé Carnation caramel •1 x 300ml Pot double cream •3 Ripe bananas, finely sliced To serve •Banana chips (optional) • Chocolate shavings
Method:
1) Crumble the biscuits into a blender and blitz until you have fine crumbs. Add the melted butter and pulse again to combine. 2) Spoon the mixture evenly between 8 individual fluted, loose-bottomed tart tins (9cm). Alternatively, make one big Banoffee pie, using a 20cm fluted, loose-bottomed tart tin. Press the mixture in firmly you can use a teaspoon
for this - and refrigerate for at least half an hour. 3) Spread the caramel over the base of the tarts not quite to the edges. Arrange a layer of bananas on top of the caramel. 4) Whip the cream until is has just reached soft peaks. Dollop onto the tarts to give a pillowy effect. 5) Remove the tarts from the tins. Poke one banana chip into the centre of each tart and scatter with chocolate shavings.

Well 2020 is starting in the way that the auto industry is heading these days with crossovers steadily taking the reign. Every automaker worth its salt has already started implementing an electrification strategy… Lets have a look at the coolest new kids on the block. ASTON MARTIN DBX: The British automaker is one of the last remaining major luxury and ultraluxury carmakers without a crossover/SUV in its portfolio. Well up until now….
