OBESITY...
It's a common problem its estimated to affect around 1 in every 4 adults and around 1 in every 5 children aged 10 to 11 in the UK and Spain. Obesity can cause a number of further problems, including difficulties with daily activities and serious health conditions. Obesity is generally caused by consuming more calories, particularly those in fatty and sugary foods, than you burn off through physical activity. The excess energy is stored by the body as fat. Obesity is an increasingly common problem because for many people modern living involves eating excessive amounts of cheap high-calorie food and spending a lot of time sitting down at desks, on sofas or in cars.
HOW TO TELL IF YOU ARE OBESE:
The most widely used method to check if you're a healthy weight is body mass index (BMI). BMI is a measure of whether you're a healthy weight for your height. You can use the BMI healthy weight calculator onlineto work out your score. For most adults, a BMI of:
18.5 to 24.9 means you're a healthy weight 25 to 29.9 means you're overweight 30 to 39.9 means you're obese 40 or above means you're severely obese
BMI is not used to diagnose obesity because people who are very muscular can have a high BMI without much fat. But for most people, BMI is a useful indication of whether they're a healthy weight. A better measure of excess fat is waist size, which can be used as an additional measure in people who are overweight (with a BMI of 25 to 29.9) or moderately obese (with a BMI of 30 to 34.9). Generally, men with a waist size of 94cm or more and women with a waist size of 80cm or more are more likely to develop obesity-related health problems.
TREATING OBESITY:
THE OUTLOOK:
The best way to treat obesity is to eat a healthy reduced-calorie diet and exercise regularly. To do this, you should: •Eat a balanced calorie-controlled diet as recommended by a GP or weight loss management health professional (such as a dietitian) •Join a local weight loss group •Take up activities such as fast walking, jogging, swimming or tennis for 150 to 300 minutes (2.5 to 5 hours) a week •Eat slowly and avoid situations where you know you could be tempted to overeat •You may also benefit from receiving psychological support from a trained healthcare professional to help change the way you think about food and eating.
There's no quick fix for obesity. Weight loss programmes take time and commitment, and work best when fully completed. The healthcare professionals involved with your care should provide encouragement and advice about how to maintain the weight loss achieved. Regularly monitoring your weight, setting realistic goals, and involving your friends and family with your attempts to lose weight can also help. Remember that even losing what seems like a small amount of weight, such as 3% or more of your original body weight, and maintaining this for life, can significantly reduce your risk of developing obesity-related complications like diabetes and heart disease. 50

SPICED TOFFEE APPLE CAKE Try a twist on traditional toffee apples... sugared, spiced and very very nice!
Ingredients:
Method:
• 200g Dates, roughly chopped • 200ml Milk, plus a splash •250g Butter, softened, plus extra for greasing •280g Self-raising flour •200g Light soft brown sugar • ½ Tsp baking powder
1) Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Grease and line a 20 x 30cm baking tray with baking parchment. Put the dates and milk in a small pan and bring to a simmer. Remove from the heat and set aside for 15 mins to cool. 2) Whizz the date mixture to a smooth purée in a food processor or blender, then scrape into a large mixing bowl. Tip in the butter, flour, brown sugar, baking powder, eggs, mixed spice and vanilla, and set aside while you prepare the apples. 3) Quarter and core the apples, then slice quite thinly,

tossing in a little lemon juice as you go. Quickly beat together the cake ingredients with an electric whisk until smooth, then scrape into the baking tray. Arrange the apple slices, overlapping in rows, on top of the cake – you should be able to get 3 rows lengthways down the tray. Bake for 45-50 mins until a skewer poked into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Cool in the tray. 4) Put the toffees in a small pan with a good splash of milk and gently melt, stirring, until runny. To finish, dust with a little icing sugar, then drizzle sauce all over the cake. Cut into squares or slices to serve.

HAPPY 50TH ITALDESIGN!
Italdesign started by Giorgetto Giugiaro have penned some of the most popular cars ever including the MK1 Golf, The Alfasud, and many a Fiat including the Panda and The Uno, turns 50 years old this month. We look at some of their more exciting designs. The Manta was the first concept car designed by Giugiaro as head of his own carrozzeria, just 40 days after the incorporation of Italdesign, it had a 400bhp Chevrolet V8 that could take the car past 200mph. The DeLoreon project started in 1974 and the first cars were sold in 1981, but by the end of 1982 it was all over, with just 8583 cars built. Each one featured stainless steel panels, a 2849cc V6 engine and either a five-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission. It's not easy improving on the looks of the Aston Martin DB7 Vantage, this one-off that made its debut at the 2001 Geneva salon with a body made from extruded aluminium, plastic and carbon fibre with power for the fully functioning prototype provided by a 6.0litre V12.
When BMW decided to enter the midengined supercar arena it knew exactly who to go to for the design. The initial plan was for Italdesign to do the styling and be built by Lamborghini. But when Lamborghini went bust Italdesign undertook the construction. Just 453 examples were made, each powered by a 3453cc straight-six. In turbocharged racing they produced 850bhp.
