Later that night the little girl says to her mother, "I know how old you are, you are 37." The mother is surprised and asks, "How did you find that out?" "I also know that you weigh 140 pounds." The

THE RISE AND FALL OF 5 CLAIMED MEDIUMS In the late 19th and early 20th century, spiritualism was all the rage. People turned to mediums and séances for spiritual guidance. The religious movement had such a pull that even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a believer....

1. THE FOX SISTERS... In late March of 1848, Margaret Fox, a farmer’s wife living in Hydesville, New York, with her daughters, began to hear noises. People became convinced they were mediums, with the ability to communicate with the other side. Soon their older sister, Leah Fox Fish, got involved. Hearing of the girls’ otherworldly “powers,” the eldest sister saw dollar signs and promptly booked sessions for people looking to communicate with the dead. The façade went on for decades, until 1888 when Maggie finally spoke up. After her husband had died, she was left penniless and alone, and had turned to drinking. She wrote a letter to the New York World confessing her and her sister’s trickery.

2. THE DAVENPORT BROTHERS... The Fox sisters didn't stop a slew of copy-cats and spin-off performers. In 1855, 16-year-old Ira and 14-year-old William Davenport got on stage for the first time. With the help of their spirit guide, a ghost named Johnny King, they performed a number of elaborate tricks that went past simple rappings; often bells, cabinets, ropes, and floating instruments. Members of the audience would swear they saw instruments fly over their heads, or feel ghostly hands on their shoulders. The brothers were heralded as true mediums and enjoyed fame for the rest of their careers. He was not heard from again until magician Harry Houdini sought him out years later. The two became friends and Ira let him in on a few of his tricks!

3. EVA CARRIÈRE... Now armed with the secrets of the Davenport Brothers, as well as his own experiences as a medium in his younger days, Houdini set out to expose fraudulent mediums throughout the 1920s. One such so called fraudster was Eva Carrière. As detailed in Houdini’s book, A Magician Among the Spirits, Carrière was a medium known for her ability to produce a mysterious substance called ectoplasm from a number of orifices. After some time, she would conjure up ectoplasm from her mouth. Although Houdini called Carrière a fraud she still seemed to hold many in her trance. A researcher named Albert von Schrenck-Notzing spent several years from 1909 to 1913 working with her, and by the end, he was completely convinced. He published his findings and

photographs in his book Phenomena of Materialisation.

4. ANN O’DELIA DISS DEBAR... Ann O’Delia Diss Debar had gone through many monikers and identities in her lifetime, but according to Houdini she started life as Editha Salomen. She was extremely successful in her con artistry and managed to cheat Baltimore’s wealthiest out of a quarter million dollar.

After a quick stint at an insane asylum for trying to kill a doctor, Salomen took up hypnotism. She also created spirit paintings, which, through sleight of hand, seemed to appear out of nowhere on blank canvases, as if the spirits painted them. She traveled between London and America for years, going in and out of prison, before finally disappearing for good in 1909

5. MINA CRANDON... In the 1920s, Mina Crandon (also known as Margery, or the Blonde Witch of Lime Street) was one of the most well-known and controversial mediums of her time. Margery would conjure the ghost of her brother Walter. The medium his spirit, who would then rap out messages, tip over tables, and yell at the participants. Often ectoplasm would ooze from her ears, nose, mouth, and dress.

In 1923, Harry Houdini joined a panel of scientists formed by The Scientific American to find a true medium. The prize for convincing them was $5000. The panel was quite convinced with Margery and was gearing up to give her the money for her legitimacy. When the séance began, Houdini sat next to Margery with their hands joined and feet and legs touching. Earlier that day, the skeptic had worn a bandage around his knee all day, making it extremely sensitive to the touch. The heightened sensi-

tivity helped him feel Margery move as she used her feet to grab various props during the act. After figuring out the scheme, Houdini was convinced of the fraud and wanted to go public. Houdini decided she was a fake and humiliated her by not giving out the prize money. Margery made a prediction in 1926. “Houdini will be gone by Halloween,” Walter declared. Coincident ally, Houdini did die that October 31st from peritonitis.

Tyler was always complaining about his problem, HAVING HAD ENOUGH OF THE WHINGING Jett finally suggested that he go to see a doctor to relieve the problem.... Tyler took his advice and went to the doctor he explained to the Doc what was wrong. The doctor told him to drop his pants and he would have a look. Tyler dropped his pants. The doctor put him up onto the examining table, and started to examine him. The doc put one finger under his left testicle and told Tyler to turn his head and cough-the usual method to check for a hernia. "Aha!" the doc and putting his finger under the right testicle, he asked Tyler to cough again. "Aha!" said the doctor and reached for his surgical scissors. Snip, snip, snip, snip on the right side then snip, snip, snip, snip, snip, snip, snip on the left side. Tyler was so scared he was afraid to look, but noted with amazement that the snipping did not hurt. The doctor then told Tyler to get dressed and see if they still ached. Tyler was absolutely delighted as he walked around the doc's office and discovered his testicles were no longer aching. "Gee, what did you do, Doc?" he asked. The doc replied.... "I cut two inches off the tops of your cowboy boots."

CRISPY KORMA SALMON

Ingredients:

SALMON • Olive oil • 1 x 500 g Salmon fillet,

COCONUT RICE • 1 Mug of basmati rice, (300g) • 45 g Coconut cream • 1 Fresh red chilli • 1 Lemon skin on, scaled and pin-boned • 1 Heaped teaspoon Patak’s CUCUMBER PICKLE korma spice paste • 1 Cucumber • 3 Sprigs of rosemary, optional • White wine vinegar •15g Fresh coriander your fingers for 10 seconds to flatten the skin. 4) Dollop the korma spice paste onto a plate, add a squeeze of lemon juice 1) Fill an ordinary builder’s mug with rice, tip and give it a stir. FRANKFURT 2019 MOTOR SHOW

Last month’s Frankfurt Motor Show was one of the biggest international shows on the car industry calendar, we look of some of the highlights.

Cupra’s Tavascan Concept, shows the brand moving away from parent company Seat. It has an illuminated Cupra logo mounted low, below the blanked-out ‘grille’, a separate badge spells out ‘Cupra’ in a vent linked to the headlights and a full-width rear light bar is intersected by the logo. The electric powertrain produces 302bhp, enabling 0-100 kph in under 6.5 seconds and a range of 450 kilometres is claimed.

The new Sian is Lamborghini’s first hybrid vehicle. A rebodied and re-tuned version of the Aventador, its also the most powerful they ever built with a 0-100kph time of less than 2.8 seconds Production is limited to just 63 units, and all of them have been sold.

The new Land Rover Defender has finally arrived, with new tech, advanced off-road ability and a starting price around 40.000€. The chassis is 95 per cent new, and is the stiffest body structure Land Rover has ever produced. Initially released in long-wheelbase “110” trim, with 5 doors and the choice of 5, 6 or 7seats. A short wheelbase, 3 door “90” will follow by the end of the year, with commercial editions of both in 2020. The Audi AI: Trail Quattro Concept, combines serious off-road capabilities with autonomous functions. The huge (4.15m x 2.15m) futuristic, buggy-style four-door vehicle has four electric motors and all-wheel drive and a range between 400 to 500 kilometers on roads or “easy off-road terrain” or 250 km for serious off-roading per charge.

The BMW Concept 4 dazzled show goers with its radical design, sleek silhouette and mesmerising front end. Building a concept car for an existing model is a new move from BMW who want to demonstrate how it plans to distance the next 4 Series due out next year from the 3 Series saloon.

Safety film - Report A company trying to continue its five year perfect safety record showed its workers a film aimed at encouraging the use of safety goggles on the job.
