True story, I believed in Santa Claus far passed most kids. My mom did such an amazing job making it believable and exciting that everyone in our family (I'm the youngest of 4) wanted to keep the magic alive for me as long as they could. Well, it still burns pretty hard in my heart. I think I'm the first person to turn on some good ol' Christmas classics, start decorating a tree and sign up for just about any holiday happening there is. But nothing will ever top our first Christmas with Elin, who arrived just a couple weeks before Thanksgiving. It was all so brand new and suddenly December 25 was looking a whole lot different in my world, the tables had turned. Now, the holidays are all about making it exciting and special for her. This issue we've rounded up some of our favorite gift ideas, recipes, DIY projects and loads of ways to up the holiday ante with your kiddos. And not to mention a special holiday installment of Cool Moms—a whole new batch of mamas that currently inspiring us. We hope you love this issue as much as we do! xx,

Sam

MANAGING EDITOR

MICHAELA TUTOR FAV O R I T E H O L I D AY T R A D I T I O N : I definitely owe my love for fashion and style to my mother, who used to dress my sister and I up like dolls when we were younger, especially during the Holidays. Those were always the most special times - getting to wear that fancy sparkly dress or very oversized velvet bow with curls in our hair. My sister and I loved to be matching, or at least coordinating for our annual Christmas card – a tradition that we still carry on to this day. Even now, dressing for the season is one of my favorite parts of the Holidays. I am so lucky to have grown up with a true "White Christmas" in Colorado. I would have to say that this is something that I miss most now that I am a California girl – although it certainly makes dressing for those holiday parties a lot simpler not having to factor snow and ice into the equation!

EDITORIAL INTERN

LORRAINE CARRERA FAV O R I T E M I N I M A G P R O J E C T: It was so much fun being involved with the Holiday Cheer photoshoots for the Holiday Mini Mag. I loved dressing the little ones up in their cozy holiday clothes and watching how excited they were for a premature Christmas celebration. It was pure joy watching them bake sweet treats, dance to Christmas tunes, and read stories by the fireplace. Their joy reminded me of timeless holiday traditions that every family should to get experience during this cheery season. CHRISTMAS AS A CHILD: When I was younger, my family and I would make the occasional trip to visit to Santa Claus at the mall. It was always such a merry moment that I truly miss from my childhood. At the age of eight, it looks like I was quite fond of Mr. Santa Claus in this throwback shot!

CONTRIBUTORS PHOTOGRAPHER

A R NA B A J R A K TA R E V I Ć FAV O R I T E H O L I D AY T R A D I T I O N : I love the winter holidays for the memories and the rituals. The early part of my childhood was spent in Germany. My strongest memories are of evenings strolling through the Weihnachtsmarkt, making lanterns out of papier-mâché and gifting handmade ornaments. My favorite activity was gathering chestnuts with my grandpa and delivering them to grandma for roasting. CHRISTMAS AS A CHILD: The responsibility of 6-year-old me spending an afternoon with Omi, my German neighbor, to set up her nativity scene was taken with great joy. When we moved to the U.S., I looked forward to revisiting the ornaments from past years and opening packages that held treasures from relatives around the globe.

C R E AT I V E D I R E C T O R

SARA PRINCE M Y FAV O R I T E M I N I M A G P R O J E C T: We had a blast getting in the Christmas spirit at the end of October to shoot our “Recipe for Holiday Cheer” story. My kids were thrilled to pull out our favorite holiday decorations and seasonal stories so early and play Christmas with some sweets, friends, festive tunes and cute jammies. It's safe to say the biggest question around my house ever since has been,"Mommy, is it Christmas yet?" CHRISTMAS AS A CHILD: This photo was taken at Christmas when I was four years old – the same age my daughter, Ayler, is now. She gasped when she saw it and a fancy red Christmas dress and new baby doll in a basket bassinet currently tops her wishlist. The thing I remember loving the most as a child was the excitment and magic in the air during the holidays and I love getting to experience it all over again through the eyes of my children while they're making magical memories of their own.

Finding the perfect gifts for your little ones is always an endless battle. I stumbled upon LostMy.Name browsing through the web and was drawn in by the personalized touch they provide through their books. Not only do they provide the technology to create these personalized stories for children but they do so in such a magical way. Each story is based on the letters of a child’s name creating an adventure that is personal and unlike any other. It’s quickly become a favorite around our household. @lostmy.name

The Great has always been a grand love affair of mine, now more than ever since they have started carrying children’s clothes. Founded by fashionistas and loving mothers, Emily Current and Meritt Elliot (also in our Cool Mom’s section), their take on American classics have me gushing over their ruffle dresses and cotton overalls for little ones. Their collection consists of everything from onesies and gym pants to ruffled tops and dresses, which are all made from 100% cotton and sure to add cool essentials to your little ones’ wardrobes. @thisisthegreat_

With Christmas right around the corner it’s time to ponder the ideas of gift giving and how to be creative for this time-around. Although I do love planning out gifts, this time of the year also comes with the weight of shopping endlessly for the right gifts. Enter the amazing Simone Le Blanc who makes all of this easier with custom gifts and specially handpicked gift boxes to cater to all of your likings. Working closely with individuals and companies that offer exquisitely created and packaged goods to bring you the finest gifts, their attention to detail is anything but subtle. A G I F T T H AT GIVES BACK

Who doesn’t love a gift that gives back? The St. Jude Collection of wooden toys (available at Pottery Barn) is at the top of my gift list. Their adorable alphabet blocks, musical instruments, and train carts come in subdued metallics that are so pretty you could even display them as holiday decor. All of their holiday wooden toys are designed to help with hand-eye coordination but the best part is that Pottery Barn will donate 30% of the purchase price to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

CUTE CUBBIES

With the ever-growing collection of toys and books, we found

the answer to our unorganized mess in Elin's room—enter Petite Pehr, a collection of playroom storage. The round and square canvas bins come in endless designs and shapes so you can be sure whatever system you come up with will save space and look cute in the process. We recently added some to Elin's shelving unit (found at Ikea) and mixed in these sweet pink pom pom bins, which fit perfectly. They're also perfect as gifts too, pick out a fun bin and fill it with goodies. Less waste and a great little storage tool for all those new toys currently waiting under the tree.

O R A N G E C R A N B E R RY S H O RT B R E A D C O O K I E S Makes 2 dozen

INGREDIENTS:

3 sticks unsalted butter, at room temperature 1 cup granulated sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3½ cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon ground ginger (optional) 1 tablespoon freshly grated orange zest ½ to ¾ cup dried cranberries Additional sugar for sprinkling

INSTRUCTIONS:

In the bowl of an electric mixer with the paddle attachment, mix together the butter and sugar on medium speed until combined. Mix in the vanilla along with two teaspoons of water. In a separate bowl, stir together the flour, salt, ground ginger and orange zest. With the mixer on low, slowly pour the flour mixture into the butter mixture. Mix until ingredients are fully incorporated. Pour in the dried cranberries and stir with a spatula until evenly distributed. Place the dough on a floured surface and form into a log shape. Wrap the log in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Unwrap the dough and slice it into about ½ inch slices. Place cookies on an ungreased baking sheet and sprinkle on a little bit of coarse sugar (such as turbinado). Bake for 22-25 minutes, or until the edges of the cookies turn golden brown. Remove from the oven and allow cookies to cool on a wire rack. Serve and enjoy!

D

ecember has always been a time for busy hands and messy tables in my house. Handmade gifts were such an important part of Christmas as a child (I clearly remember still gluing and taping on Christmas morning!) and it’s one tradition that I hope to pass on to my own children too. I see them take such enormous pride in carefully wrapping a present they’ve made for each other, or a grandparent, on a birthday and I hope this early joy in creativity and industry and giving continues as they grow.

Part of the curriculum at my eldest’s school focuses on handwork and crafts, and in his kindergarten year he became quite a proficient sewer. I’ve personally been eyeing the beautiful Advent Calendar project from Purl Soho for years and decided this summer, with his love of felt and thread fresh, we would couldihavethat.com

“The ornaments that he made will be such a sweet reminder that he helped make the calendar that we will use for the rest of his childhood at Christmas time.” tackle the project together. He helped sew the little ornaments and admittedly I did the rest (I can be a little bit perfection-y when it comes to these things), but it was just the right amount of work for his six year old self. The ornaments that he made will be such a sweet reminder that he helped make the calendar that we will use for the rest of his childhood at Christmas time. And I expect it to be a tear jerker each year when I unpack it in December after he is grown! We had so much fun making the project that we decided to use the leftover scraps to make even more ornaments as gifts this year. Dash was so excited about the first one he made that he gave it to my parents when they were visiting in September. Oops! You can order beautiful wool felt in every color imaginable directly from Purl Soho or A Child’s Dream (they also sell big eye needles that are great, and anything else you could need for crafts). We used all different colors and cut our own shapes (two of each per ornament), though you could also purchase the Heirloom Ornament Kit from Purl, if you like following exact instructions. But I think part of the fun for little hands is choosing their own colors and shapes. The ornaments come together with a simple whip stitch, a bit of stuffing, and a loop of embroidery floss sewn into the top. You can bead using sequins and seed beads (and the more wacky the pattern the better, if you ask me), but they are pretty just plain too. Once you get the hang of the general idea, you can use the same concept to make all sorts of cute seasonal decorations or gifts with your kids. Or by yourself. I would be lying if I didn’t admit to enjoying the whole process even more than them! n

The aftermath of present opening. I usually takes me a full day to clean up the wreckage.

FAVORITE HILARIOUS HOLIDAY MEMORY FROM YOUR CHILDHOOD:

I remember my grandfather dressed up as Santa Claus one year for a Christmas party when I was about 6. When the night was over I remember him

walking out the door and I peeked out of my window

to catch a glimpse of him climbing back up onto the

roof and flying away with his reindeer and sled. To my disbelief, he got in "grandpa's car" and drove

off. I was so sad and confused and it was that night my mom had to tell me the truth about St. Nick. WHAT'S ON YOUR WISHLIST?

It's so silly, but new kitchen appliances!

The

older I get, the less stuff I want for myself and the more I want for my home! Freda Salvador mules.

AND FOR THE MINIS?

Oh, and some

I'd love some of those!

Rylee likes anything Princess related and Cru is super into trucks. Quite predictable. n
