EDITORIAL DIRECTOR

SAMANTHA WENNERSTROM Every year I feel like the holidays zoom by far too quickly. And let’s be honest they’re sometimes peppered with meltdowns—from toddlers to parents. Every year (as a mom) I seem to get the hang of things more and more while navigating what’s worth stressing over and what’s not. Because I love this time of year I try and map it all out ahead of time, including holiday shopping. In this special Could I Have That? Mini issue we’re diving into the best gifts, brands and ideas for making it a special time for your family with a seriously comprehensive gift guide. And we even called in a handful of the coolest moms we know—like Anine Bing and Alli Web of Dry Bar—(flip to page 67) to share their traditions, holiday plans, gift checklist and wish list for the month. We also thought about all the downfalls that come along with the holidays—nutrition goes out the window and our kids get crazy, let’s face it. So we enlisted parenting guru Janet Lansbury to lend some advice for our toughest situations with kids during this time of year. We asked some real moms to send in their questions for Janet to answer and got some valuable tips back (page 18)—a must read. And if you find yourself on a sugary path, it’s a slippery slope folks, we have the perfect cleanse that can arrive on your doorstep (page 22). We’re so excited to present this issue to all of you and hope that it inspires all the different elements of the holidays. P.S. Don’t miss our “Mini Perks” for up to 20% off a handful of our favorite brands—get all the details on page 83. xx,

SARA PRINCE

Sam and I met years ago working at a magazine together – she in the editorial department, me in the art department. Our friendship was immediate and was cemented with our morning coffee runs, afternoon treat seeking and the occasional long lunch breaks turned hotel pool sneak-inand-swim sessions. I remember the day Sam casually said, "I think I'm going to start a blog" and have loved my front row seat, watching as it unfolded from an idea and a handful of pixels to her full blown, flourishing career. In the midst of it all, we've seen each other through engagements, weddings and babies and have shared a ton of laughs along the way. I'm a mom to the two loves of my life – Dylan and Ayler, 8 and 5 respectively. You've seen their sweet faces within the pages of the mini mag since its start. I hope you love reading this new issue as much as I loved putting it together. It's safe to say my holiday shopping lists are already in good order, if not overflowing. And I've got plenty of hints to drop to the Mister, too. Happy holidays!

There are a lot of bows out there but very very few are as functional, well-made and timeless as Wunderkin bows. Every few months they release a new batch and we find ourselves sitting on the edge of our seat to snag one or two because they sell out so quickly. This month they’re releasing a holiday collection of velvet bows—can you handle it!? Colors like dark emerald green, rich blush pink, classic black, cherry red and a golden yellow (our personal favorite) will have mama borrowing from the bow drawer.

JANET LANSBURY COULD

WHILE PARENTING IS FULL OF SWEET JOYFUL MOMENTS,

there are the other moments that leave us seeking a little guidance and help. Enter Janet Lansbury, who we both have been personally looking to for tips on parenthood. Janet is a certified RIE (Resources for Infant Educarers) associate and parent/infant guidance class instructor. She’s published two books, has an amazing podcast called “Unruffled” and has helped countless families find peace at home. Lucky for us, Janet agreed to answer some questions from our circle of mom friends that pertain to the Holidays.

JL: I’d like to begin with a general reminder… The holiday season is a magical time that usually includes a more active schedule. Inevitably, the festivities create anticipation, stimulation, excitement, and other high emotions, all of which tend to be stressful for young children. Even when the feelings are joyful and positive, their intensity can be unsettling, almost painful. The holiday season can also disrupt routine, predictability, rest and downtime, which means much less self-control.

tend to work more efficiently than ours, and that includes their heating and cooling systems. So, rather than immediately saying no, I would acknowledge (and remember to never judge) her desire to wear the dress with bare legs. There’s nothing wrong with asking, right? If time or forethought allows, you might allow her to step outside to gage her own comfort in that outfit. You could even do this the night before. If we

What's the best way to start encouraging a 3-year-old to put on their own clothes every day (with assistance, of course), especially things like shoes.

JL: The best way to encourage children is to trust their developmental timetable and heed my mentor Magda Gerber’s words: “Readiness is when they do it.” Our role is to make daily events like dressing, bathing, and diaper changes a time of connection, mutual participation, and respectful communication. That means giving children opportunities to do as much as they can and want to do in that moment, helping as minimally as possible to give them the space and trust they need, but never pushing or insisting. This takes patience and the willingness to slow way, way down during these invaluable and intimate caregiving routines. Caregiving activities like these are prime time for parent-child bonding and just as important to children (if not more so) as playing or celebrating together.

When we understand that our children’s behavior is always a reflection of their comfort level, and we stop taking misbehavior (or lack of manners, etc.) as a personal affront, children feel the difference.

So, I recommend that parents expect children to push limits and behave more emotionally and unreasonably than usual. Understanding our children’s perspective and sensitivities will help us to plan appropriately, pace ourselves as confident leaders, and maintain reasonable expectations (which I share much more about in my "Holiday Survival Guide." Now on to your questions!

My daughter refuses to wear weather appropriate outfits (only dresses/bare legs), and since we're getting into winter and evening parties, it's become a battle. What's the best way to handle the situation? JL: Children need us to be their confident and decisive leaders, and leaders don’t stoop to battle with those they lead. They also need us to come from a place of respect and trust. I would first consider that your child may possibly have a different sense of physical comfort than you do. Like new engines, our children’s bodies

come from a place of openness and flexibility with our children, rather than annoyance, we have a much better chance of getting an honest response. Either way, children usually need their parent leaders to make the final decision. If it’s a “no, I can’t let you wear that in this weather,” then your child needs to exercise her right to complain all she wishes, while you lovingly hold your ground. If it’s a “yes, okay, we can try that,” I would still bring along a pair of leggings (and maybe a jacket or cardigan) as back-up. In their innocence and immaturity, children are often unable to see beyond the moment to what being too cold later will actually feel like, so I believe it is our role to think ahead, rather than leave them to suffer the consequences.

With all the holiday parties and excessive sugar, it's hard to say no when the other kids are eating it. What's the best way to deal with this? JL: Give your child as much preparation and autonomy as possible by making a plan together beforehand as to how you will handle the sugar/dessert issue. For example, you and your children could decide that they’ll be able to choose one of the desserts, or half-portions of two choices. But in the (expected!) case that your children can’t stick to the plan while at the event, don’t be afraid couldihavethat.com

21 JL: Great question to end with. Again, a generous spirit can only manifest from what children feel on the inside. It is not in our power to shift, force, or artificially teach. It can only be encouraged by us through our modeling. Not only in terms of our children noticing us expressing values toward others – that we are generous to those in need, for example – but, most powerfully, children learn experientially through our interactions with them, momentto-moment. Our unconditional acceptance and regard for them demonstrates the spirit of

to block them, stop them, move them, but never turn against them, because that makes them feel even less safe and comfortable.

giving more profoundly than any intentional lesson. Yes, they are very likely to focus on all the “stuff” when they are young, particularly if they tend to receive a lot of it. That’s okay. It may even help anchor children during this heady time to focus on material things. But instead of disapproving of their apparent greed and materialism (our judgment will only thwart the lesson), this is a prime opportunity to demonstrate our empathy. We model empathy by staying on their side through thick and thin. So when we see misbehavior (which, as I’ve mentioned, tends to be rampant over the holidays), we’ll How do I shift the focus from my kids’ ideally perceive it as a call for help rather Christmas lists and wants and put more than a time to scold and punish. Truly, kids don’t want to be that person, so they need us weight on the spirit of giving?

doing battle, we’ll ideally strive to be the bigger person that apologizes and repairs – the mature, generous leader our child will emulate and one day become. Throughout the holidays, our children are bound to offer us ample opportunities to model the spirit of giving as we repeatedly give them the benefit of the doubt by seeing the goodness in them. Enjoy!

to say a confident “no,” and then allow them to object as much as they wish. They need to have that right. Objections will end more quickly if we welcome them (rather than letting them grate on us) and are not ambivalent ourselves.

My 3-year-old sometimes isn't appreciative of something when someone gives her a gift. As much as I tell her to "thank" the person, depending on her mood, sometimes she just won't. What's the best way to handle that?

JL: There’s really only one way that children learn authentic graciousness… our modeling. Gratitude can’t be forced. It has to come from within. Yes, we might be able to get children to parrot an insincere thank you, but in doing so we are likely to lessen and prolong the development of their ability to thank others authentically and without our prompt. Why? Because children sense disapproval in our impatience, which makes them feel less comfortable, generous and grateful. This is a controversial topic, and I share more about it in my article: “Hi, Bye, and Thank You.”

Along the same lines, she's been doing this thing where she shies away when we ask her to say hello to someone or say good bye, give hugs etc. about half the time, and now it's her turning her back and acting like she's mad. JL: Yes, all these behaviors go together. They come under the heading of manners and openness toward others. Children can’t put themselves out there to engage with authentic kindness and warmth if they don’t feel comfortable on the inside. When they feel pressured, judged, or disapproved of by their parents, they tend to shut down. So, as challenging as it is to be patient and believe in our children, that’s the best and quickest way to get the results we hope for: children who actually surprise us with their impeccable manners and generous spirits.

When we understand that our children’s behavior is always a reflection of their comfort level, and we stop taking misbehavior (or lack of manners, etc.) as a personal affront, children feel the difference. Does this mean we need to be perfect parents, never losing our temper? Not by any stretch. If and when we do lose our cool and find ourselves

WELLNESS

DELIVERED TWO busy

mamas ONE delivery THREE nourishing days We dish up the details on a 3-day cleanse from Urban Remedy that sent our sugar cravings on a permanent vacation, just in time for the holidays.

24

SAM

Back in the Spring I came to a head with my health. I was battling migraine after migraine and spiraling out of control with a laundry list of ailments. A friend turned me onto to a nutritionist who helped me see the light—my poor diet was at the root. If you asked me I thought I was pretty healthy for the most part albeit a ravenous sweet tooth I caved into on a daily basis, but turns out I was not giving my body the nutrition it needed. And so I started making some changes and have since been educating myself more and more on what makes our bodies flourish and what makes them crash. But here’s the tricky part. I run my own business and I’m a mom—translation, life is busy and hectic 90% of the time. So getting to the grocery store and keeping my food agenda on track gets hard, which is why I was SO excited to discover Urban Remedy’s Metta Morphisis plan —a 3-day or 5-day cleanse that arrives on your doorstep. Everything from your meals to juices are all there and you don’t even need to think about it. And did I mention it’s all organic? Afterwards I felt completely rejuvenated, like I wiped the slate clean. This is the perfect program to boost your immunity, come off of sugar or even restart your engines after a stressful month. I will hands down be signing up for another Urban Remedy cleanse.

SARA

For me, it's the inescapable cliché of motherhood: my days seem to revolve around making breakfast, packing lunches, serving after school snacks, preparing dinner – then doing it all again. And again. In the blur of it all, and once everyone else is happily fed, this mama's often the last to sit down for a proper meal. And as a selfproclaimed nutrition nerd, that's hard to admit. Because I truly do know better. I just don't always do better – for myself anyway. So the thought of having three days' worth of everything sent to my doorstep, completely mapped out, prepared and ready to go? Not to mention certified organic and clean as a whistle? My idea of perfection. So imagine my happiness when a giant box arrived at my doorstep, its contents three days worth of soups, salads,

juices, tinctures. With a road-map to it all in my inbox, describing the what, the when, the why and the how. Along with videos for daily meditations, movement and inspiration. Basically, it's a don't-have-to-think-about-it, just-do-it three day reboot. In other words, exactly what I need. Going into the holiday season feeling nourished and invigorated instead of depleted and dipping into reserves is my idea of a gift. The food is incredible. And not just because I didn't have to prepare it myself – though bonus points in that department. I never felt hungry, instead I just enjoyed (thoroughly) the luxury of eating above and beyond my highest standards without lifting a finger in the planning or prepping department. For a busy mama staring down the barrel of the holiday season, that alone is worth its weight in gold. The Urban Remedy Metta Morphisis plan checks all the boxes: gorgeous food, delish juices and tinctures, mediation and movement. It's like a three day retreat that somehow co-exists with the rigmarole of busy, daily life. It would make a slamdunk new year's gift to yourself, mama. couldihavethat.com

All the soups were so amazing but I especially dug the ginger carrot. It completely cleared up my sinuses and made me feel warm and cozy inside on a cold day. My other favorite—the one I wish I could take once a week!—was the Inflamm-Relieve juice with pineapple, ginger, lemon, turmeric and cayenne. For someone who gets headaches easily, this one was incredible.

SARA

I loved the soups too. The lemony greens one in particular—sipped on in the late afternoon, on the go or at home for the perfect late day pick me up. Oh, and the umeboshi salad. I could eat one everyday for lunch, no complaints. And since everything (from soups to salads to juices) can be ordered on their own, I have a feeling there will be more Urban Remedy boxes showing up at my doorstep in the future.

Oscar, 9; Polly, 6. FAVORITE CHILDHOOD HOLIDAY TRADITION:

Our family tradition is that we all wake up at my parents house

on Christmas morning. I am 37 years old and I have only ever spent Christmas Eve at my parents house, I am one of four children and we are all now married/have partners plus two of us have children so there are people everywhere but somehow we make it work. Christmas mornings chaos and after present unwrapping we all go to my grandmothers and have lunch with

even more family. My dad is one of nine children and it is

pretty standard to have between 75 and 100 people just for lunch!

ON YOUR HOLIDAY WISHLIST:

I am seriously obsessing over these sneakers from Gucci. I

really have nothing else that I want. It sounds really sappy but I have 3 friends at the moment battling cancer and it devastates me so all I really want is for my family and friends to be safe and healthy. ON THE KIDS' WISHLISTS:

Oscar wants an iPhone X (not happening), a Santa Cruz T-shirt and a Cricket net. Polly would like Tutu Du Monde dress (she wants one every birthday and Christmas), a Kip & Co Peacock quilt cover and a Milk n Soda bag.

ANINE BING

FOUNDER AND CHIEF CREATIVE OFFICER OF ANINE BING LOCATION:

Los Angeles, California MINIS:

Bianca, 6; Benjamin, 4. FAVORITE CHILDHOOD HOLIDAY TRADITION:

Christmas for me is all about family. It is the coziest time of

year. Growing up we didn’t get any presents from my parents. It was not materialistic at all, it was about the family being

together. We read lots of stories, sang songs and played music. Now, as a mom myself I try to create that cozy vibe and make it

special at home without going crazy on too many gifts and too

much decoration. We always have a beautiful tree, but mainly

this is a time of year to be together and help other people. Me and the kids make big bags of clothes and toys they don’t need anymore and give to shelters around LA. ON YOUR HOLIDAY WISHLIST:

More than anything, I really just want to have some downtime

with my family at home together - cozy breakfasts, movies, family

walks... I know it's cheesy but it's true! On the more material side... I collect vintage Chanel bags. My husband has gotten me a few over

the years as gifts, and I can never have enough. Another handbag I really dream about is the Hermes Kelly bag. ON THE KIDS' WISHLISTS:

Bianca is obsessed with Calico Critters. I played with those too when I was a kid. They are SO cute. Benjamin is really into these wooden robots at the moment. He

can play for hours changing them around and making them into different shapes.

WILL YOU BE HOLIDAY-ING AT HOME OR AFAR THIS YEAR?

We’re staying here in L.A. for the holidays this year, so it won’t exactly be a white Christmas, but I travel a lot for work so as I said I’m honestly looking forward to relaxing at home with my husband and the kids. We recently bought our first house and

designed and decorated the space ourselves from scratch, so it’s our little L.A. oasis.

FAVORITE ONLINE SHOPPING SPOTS:

My favorite gifts to give are from my own line...it feels the

most personal because I’m so involved in the design process of everything we come out with. The whole line is inspired

by what I’m loving and what I think other women will want and use, so naturally our pieces are my go-to gifts. I’m also a huge fan of Goop - online shopping can be kind of overwhelming because there are so many options, but their selection is beautifully curated. COULD

FOR THE GRANDPARENTS:

For moms, I think a great gift is a silk pajama set. I’m personally love our striped version because you can dress it up with a leather jacket and booties and wear it out of the house, too! FOR THE HUSBAND:

We have Aesop products all over our house, and my husband loves the scent of their Resurrection Aromatique Hand Wash. Because he travels for work, I’ve been thinking about getting him this Aesop travel kit and a new travel bag. FOR THE BEST FRIEND:

Most of my best friends are moms also, so I always think a gift certificate to the spa is a nice gift for them...it can be hard to make time for yourself when you have kids, so sometimes your friends have to do it for you! I love Burke Williams in L.A., they have the best massages and scrubs. FOR THE HOSTESS:

I always like to have a candle burning when I have people over...it makes any home feel warmer and more welcoming. I love our Savage Rose Candle because it’s floral and musky at the same time. Everyone who walks into our house now always expects and loves the smell! FOR THE TEACHER:

I think the best gifts for teachers come from the kids themselves, even if it’s just a little handwritten note or artwork. Otherwise, I think some nice chocolates or something neutral for the home is a good go-to. FOR THE STOCKINGS:

Candy from my favorite Swedish candy brand, Sockerbit!

LEELA CYD

PHOTOGRAPHER AND AUTHOR LOCATION:

Santa Barbara, California MINI:

Izador Cosmo, age 4 months FAVORITE CHILDHOOD HOLIDAY MEMORY:

I grew up in a California 1950s cookie-cutter house without a chimney. How would Santa arrive with gifts if there was no way

to get in? Every year around December 1, my parents would get leftover boxes and stack them above our tv, my brother and I would tape them together, paint the structure to reddish brown to

look like bricks, then thinly paint in white lines to give it a life-

like feel. Our stockings were pinned to the cardboard chimney. We got a vhs tape of a fire after a few years of this and would

play the 'fire' video as we sat around enjoying our handiwork and hot cocoa. Always loved doing this and now that I think of it, my house has no fireplace... We will definitely be doing this with Iz. ON YOUR HOLIDAY WISHLIST:

We have a $5 limit on gifts in our family, this encourages the homemade and the goofy!! I'd love some clown noses, a night of babysitting so I can go to the movies, a framed drawing from my husband for our studio, a freezer full of my dad's famous tomato sauce.

ON BABY'S WISHLIST:

Izador is still so little, but I'm going to spoil him with a few new outfits from Tiny Cottons (they have a pretty good sale section), and some polka dot pajamas (I bought these for

his cousin, so now they can be matching!), I love

hosting kids and these tempera paints that come in bricks are

so vibrant. Definitely going to get Izador his own set so we can start painting together.

WILL YOU BE HOLIDAY-ING AT HOME OR AFAR THIS YEAR?

We're staying home this year – everyone is coming to us, I'm thrilled!

FAVORITE ONLINE SHOPPING SPOTS:

For toys, I love Nova Natural – it's full of pretty, gifts

made of nice materials; Dick Blick for art supplies;

Spartan Shop has everything all your girlfriends want. When I can, I always like to support local ceramicists

like Rebekah Miles and Mark Churchill and artist Hannah Vainstein makes lovely weavings – all of

these folks do custom work and can create something dramatic just for you or a loved one.
