Christmas Crime Prevention Come December we typically start to purchase Christmas gifts and these items, often expensive, are a target for thieves. Criminals are aware that homes, outbuildings and cars may be full of gifts and they will be on the lookout for opportunities to steal them. If you leave anything valuable on view either at home or in the car you may be presenting a thief with an opportunity. Here are our top tips for having a crime-free Christmas. When you are out and about, be aware of what is going on around you, especially in busy shops and crowded streets. Keep wallets, purses and phones inside pockets or at the bottom of a bag and only carry the cash and cards that you need. Be careful where you park your car. Choose a well-lit parking space, don’t leave valuables on display in your car and always lock and secure your vehicle when you leave it. Try to avoid returning to your car to drop off purchases mid-way through a shopping trip. If you must leave shopping in the car makes sure it is left out of view and keep receipts with you. When at home, don’t leave presents under the Christmas Tree if they are visible from windows and doors and for gifts you want to keep hidden

until the big day keep them in a secure place and avoid sheds or garages. Don’t keep large amounts of cash at home and always keep your doors and windows locked. Make your house look occupied, use a timer switch to operate lamps as it gets dark. Take care about what you post on social media. Try not to advertise expensive gifts you have purchased/received and don’t broadcast when you are going to be away from your home. After Christmas avoid advertising your lovely gifts by putting empty boxes outside for collection. I hope that you have a very happy festive period, stay safe and well and I look forward to our next article in 2022! PC Paula Gilluley, Thetford Police

Remember Loved Ones At Special Event In Thetford Annual events organised by a local hospice to remember those close to our hearts who are no longer with us and to celebrate their lives are being held across West Suffolk and Thetford. It is hoped the Light up a Life events, organised by St Nicholas Hospice Care, will help those who attend to remember special times they had with their lo ed ones and re ect on fond memories. One of the remembrance events, which feature readings, music and prayers, will take place in Thetford’s United Reformed Church, IP24 2AD, on Thursday 9th December, at 7pm. This year there will also be an online service, which can be viewed from 6pm on 21st December.

Charlie De-Moore, the hospice’s events fundraiser, said: “Our Light up a Life remembrance events create a comforting atmosphere as people gather together to remember loved ones. “The events offer people who are bereaved, their family and friends an opportunity to join together and remember those that have died. It is a chance to celebrate and give thanks for their lives. These events are something we would like the whole community to share in, anyone who would like to remember a loved one, whether they were cared for by the hospice or not are invited to attend.” During the events, the names of loved ones will be spoken, readings will be shared, and there will also be music and prayers. People can also remember their lost loved ones and share their tributes online through an online book of remembrance on the hospice’s website. There is no charge for the Light up a Life events, which this year are supported by Chassis Cab, but donations to the hospice are welcome. These donations will make a big difference to the charity, which needs to raise £11,000 a day to fund its work supporting those facing dying, caring and grief across West Suffolk and Thetford.

attending and supporting. People will be asked to sanitise their hands, encouraged to wear face coverings/masks, and in some cases, venues may limit capacities to enable social distancing. The hospice will also be asking people to let them know in advance if they wish to attend. Thetford Singers Festive Favourites Join us for a packed hour of festive favourites both traditional and contemporary on Wednesday 8th December 2021 at 7.30pm in Thetford Methodist Church. Last year the choir practised carols on oom and a number of firm fa ourites emerged from both these sessions and a little survey we conducted once we were back to ‘live’ rehearsals in September. From this, Musical Director Chris Parsons has built a wonderful programme packed full of traditional favourites, audience carols and some more recent seasonal songs. As part of the church’s Christmas Tree Festival the choir will perform these atmospheric Christmas songs without intermission, but with complimentary seasonal refreshments served afterwards and of course a chance to wander through the enchanted forest of lovingly decorated Christmas trees in the church. Having A Wonderful Christmas Doesn’t Need To Cost The Earth! There has been a lot in the news about the climate crisis we are facing and the changes we need to make for the sake of our future. The festive season can be the most wasteful and polluting time of the year, so I hope you are inspired by these ideas for reducing waste and still having a magical time! I think the most important thing to remember is to use up what you already have. Whether it is decorations, Christmas cards from previous years, wrapping paper - use it! • Wrapping Paper: Reuse and save gift bags and paper from presents you recieve. Reuse is better than recycling and certainly better than landfill. ou can use things from around the house such as; pretty paper wrappers, beautiful scarves, brown paper decorated with potato stamps. Make it fun and unique! If you do buy wrapping paper make sure it is recyclable (sadly many aren’t, so do check). • Tape: Sellotape is appalling. Please don’t use plastic tape! Not only can it not be recycled, it also stops the paper it is attached to being recycled. There are two options I have found helpful; string which can look very pretty, and compostable paper tape / washi tape. • Cards: Some may decide not to send Christmas cards due to their environmental footprint, but I do love to send a limited number of cards. Cards can be found from online shops (such as Etsy) made of recycled paper and with no plastic packaging / glitter. This can be a great way to support local artists, just make sure to request plastic free and preferably made from recycled materials. Again, make sure the cards you buy are recyclable at a minimum. • Second hand gifting, regifting and mindful gifting: I feel like there needs to be a pretty huge shift in attitudes about presents. There is no need to buy and have stuff for the sake of having stuff! Avoid buying tat and novelty gifts and ask people what they really want, it is so much less wasteful. ou might consider giving your own list to family and friends in plenty of time so they have the opportunity to find a second hand option. There is nothing wrong with second hand purchases, in fact they are amazing because you are not creating a demand for more items to be made! If a gift is something that the receiver really wants or needs, and is something they will enjoy and

have in their home for many years to come, that’s great. The idea is to be mindful of our impact. • Small businesses: I can’t say it enough, support small business! Every order a small business receives will make them happy. They might even do a happy dance! It is also important to make sure that companies have the ethical and sustainable credentials you are looking for. • Experiences: Experiences can be a really great thing to get. There is nothing better than trying new things and doing something fun together! • Food: Food is a huge part of festive celebrations. Food waste can also be huge. It’s nice to indulge, but let’s keep it within reason and not cook and buy so much food we end up throwing it away. Cook reasonable portion sizes and make sure to freeze leftovers, or eat them the next day. • Crackers: Instead of those unrecyclable crackers, with (literal) rubbish plastic toys, why not try a cracker • Decorations: Use what you have and don’t invest in any more new plastic tinsel and decorations. There is no need to replace decorations to fit with trends use the stuff that you are sentimental about and make it last! If you do need new decorations, second hand and natural materials such as wooden or glass decorations are best. Avoid glitter! Focus on time with loved ones and making memories together. The stuff is just a bonus to what is really important. Having fun and making memories together. The planet doesn’t need to suffer for us to have a brilliant time. I hope you have a wonderful, compassionate festive season and a happy new year! Saving the planet can - and should - start on your own doorstep.

Damara School Hosts Open Day The Damara School is an Independent Special School in Bridge Street. The school opened its doors at the beginning of September to 9 pupils. It works closely with their pupils, families and other professionals to provide a holistic and therapeutic education without compromising on academic learning. Classes are organised by attainment rather than age. If pupils have overcome their barriers or met mainstream standards they have the option to be transferred back to a mainstream school. Tours were led by Bailey and Shai who had dressed for the occasion and couldn’t wait to show Bailey and Shai with Headteacher Sandra Govender visitors round. Classes are small with individual in one of the new classrooms at the Damara School support for each pupil. There is a strong emphasis on making the learning experience enjoyable. Feedback from parents is impressive, with one Bailey said he particularly enjoys his mindfulness family saying, “The new school has made a big sessions, “Miss V has taught us how to stop bad difference to the children, our child is calmer, the things getting to us,” he said whilst demonstrating people around you understand and have the time one of his breathing exercises. Shai said he was to support your child.” Another parent added, now enjoying being at school and it was excellent! “The staff know how to react to the children. In a Headteacher Sandra Govender said the school’s mainstream school standard teacher training is so focus was on giving the child opportunities to limited you can’t expect them to be specialists.” reengage with learning. “Our holistic approach The school plans to increase their intake to 18 BA Royall HP 11.21.qxp_Layout 1 at 18/11/2021 Page 1 starts with discussing how we feel the start of08:17 next year. Community Efforts Recognised With Funding Boost For Voluntary Sector Community groups across Norfolk will have access to the support they need thanks to a new partnership, funded by Norfolk County Council. Voluntary Norfolk, Community Action Norfolk and Norfolk Community Foundation will work together as the Empowering Communities Partnership, with Norfolk Community Advice Network and FUSE Norwich alongside as strategic partners. The help on offer includes managing funding and finance e pert trainin and seminars volunteer recruitment and deployment and a series of forums and networking opportunities. This new partnership marks a 45% increase in the funding provided for this support, in recognition of the role community groups have played throughout the pandemic. Councillor Margaret Dewsbury, Cabinet Member for communities and partnerships at Norfolk County Council said: “The pandemic has clearly shown that Norfolk’s voluntary groups are the lifeblood of our communities. Thousands of people stepped up to help their neighbours by delivering food packages, talking to those who are lonely and supporting the vaccine roll-out. We know this is a challenging time for the voluntary sector. This partnership reinforces our commitment to support the sector and invests in the support they need.”

Barbara, a volunteer at the Burrell Shop in Thetford

The partnership has seen the funding provided by Norfolk County Council for Norfolk’s voluntary sector support organisations increase by 45%, from £172,000 to £250,000 for a 2-year period. There is also an additional cash boost of £150,000 over 3 years to directly support local voluntary groups through the Empowering Communities und. The latest fundin uilds on the e istin infrastructure support arrangements and comes after a recent survey found that two-thirds of voluntary or anisations e pect the demand for their services to increase. This is against a backdrop of falling income and reduction in the range of services on offer. The Empowering Communities Fund is now open to local organisations to apply for grants up to £10,000 to help build their resilience and become more sustainable. For more information and to apply go to: www.norfolkfoundation.com/fundingsupport/grants/groups/empoweringcommunities-fund/

Lucy Hogg, Director of Infrastructure at Voluntary orfolk, said “The partnership is really e cited to be working together to drive a step-change in support for the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise sector. We want to support the sector to amplify its voice at this critical time, as we come out of the pandemic to enable more collaboration, A new partnership website will be coming soon, stronger partnerships, and more resources, until then community groups & social enterprises This will help voluntary and community groups AKFS Advert.qxp_Layout 1 14/10/2020 17:03 Page 1 in Norfolk to continue to provide vital services to that want to find out how to et help can contact www.voluntarynorfolk.org.uk/contact Norfolk’s communities.”

Open Day Prompts New Members For Thetford U3A We recently held our open day at the Carnegie. This was the first one for two years due to Covid restrictions and we were hoping that it would be successful. The Mayor and Mayoress opened the day and wished the U3A good luck and hoped we would soon be able to recruit a few committee members. Our group leaders came with their items of interest, arts/crafts, book club, dog walking, photography group were just a few things to hear about plus our music group were strumming quietly in the background. Our Membership Secretary Gil Roberts was snowed under with requests to join. The Police and Citizens Advice teams were also there to chat and give advice to various members of the public, unfortunately the fire brigade were unable to attend but at the end of the afternoon we were very pleased that so many eo le came along to see us mainly to find out about our U3A. There was also interest with the new members wanting to join the sign language group, we had to stop meetings earlier in the year, again due to Covid, but with renewed interest, there are plans to restart. If you are a member and would like to come along please ring me for details of venues and times. This is a basic class that we are starting at the very beginning. It is a fun group as well with plenty of laughs!

Attendees at the U3A Open Day enjoying a game of Mahjong

On 9th December we are having our Christmas Party for members only. We have invited the Mayor and Mayoress again and we are delighted that they have agreed to open the afternoon and will stay with us to enjoy the entertainment which will be the Ruby Sisters. The bar will be open and also teas/coffees will be available. We are all looking forward to this as again we missed it last year. All future talks for next year are on our website, hopefully there will be at least one you will enjoy. Free for members to attend and £2 for visitors. Local Artist Featured In Charity Auction former firefighter s helmet has been turned into a piece of art by Thetford artist Sandra Clabburn to raise money for charity. Norfolk Fire Service invited artists from across the county and UK to submit designs for the helmets recently replaced by newer uniform. Sandra began painting 6 years ago as a hobby, but after being made redundant she focused on her painting and started attending local fairs around Thetford to exhibit her work. When the fairs came to halt because of Covid, Sandra had more time to re ect at home and this is when she started to create Chakra themed paintings based around different spiritual energies to help with mindfulness, inner strength, and mental wellbeing. It was during this time a friend sent Sandra an advert from the Fire Service for Ashes to Art where they were looking for local artists to paint old fire helmets to turn them into works of art so they could be auctioned to raise funds for the Fire Fighters Charity and Break.

Once complete all the helmets were put on display in Norwich and auctioned off with a target to raise 000. The final amount raised was 1 for the charities with Sandra s submission raising .

Sandra decided to apply and came up with a design to incorporate some of the Chakra themes. “I submitted my application and was excited and proud to hear I had been picked as one of the artists to take part” she said. The helmet was delivered a few weeks later and as soon as Sandra started work on it, she said she felt an emotional connection to the fire fighters who had worn this helmet and how it had protected them while they risked their lives to help others, “this helped me as I created my piece of artwork”.

Bury Road Allotment Association Bury Road Allotment Association was formed in February 2020 but due to Covid 19 we were unable to hold any events until this year. On 6th August we held a BBQ where about 20 of our members enjoyed a grand evening socialising, having fun and getting to know each other better. On the 28th September we held a coffee morning in aid of MacMillan Cancer, again there was a good turn out of Plot Holders to support us and we were able to raise £120 for this good cause. Bonfire Night came along, and we gathered again with Hot Soup and Hot Dogs around Fire Pits having fun and socialising together. We didn’t have any fireworks because of the livestock on our site but we did enjoy the displays of our neighbours. We intend to hold a Christmas Carol Sing Along in December where we will serve Hot Mulled Wine, Mince Pies and Sausage Rolls. My sincere thanks go to all committee members, and especially Geof (Vice-Chair) & Maggie Young, and my wife Jean for all their help. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy and Peaceful Christmas. Peter Vale, Chairman

Recycling Boost For Community A Thetford-based community litter picking group has enhanced its environmental credentials after it teamed up with a local waste collector. The community litter pick takes place each month in Thetford, regularly attracting more than 10 local residents who help remove litter from across the Burrell Ward. Now, thanks to the support of Countrystyle Recycling based in Barnham, all of the cans and bottles collected as part of the litter pick are being recycled. Councillor Terry Jermy who organises the monthly litter pick said; “We were amazed with how many cans and bottles we were collecting each month. We’re grateful to Serco and Breckland Council for supporting us by taking away the bulk of what we collect but we really wanted to recycle as much as we possibly could. Thanks go to Countrystyle Recycling, we now have a dedicated bin just for these so we separate all of the waste each month di erting as much as we can from landfill Duncan Partridge from Countrystyle Recycling said; “Our business is very proud to assist our local community with this project. Countrystyle Recycling supports many companies across the region di erting waste awa from landfill ith our

Three Former Dames And A New Leading Lady! Panto’s back – oh yes it is! After the disappointment of cancelling last year’s performance, Thetford Players are back bringing you the best of Panto as ever. Alice in Wonderland – A ‘Curious’ Pantomime by Tom Whalley is set to be a Panto with a difference but with a host of well-loved Players faces. Producers Jo Lylie Cooper and Leonie Sweden are thrilled to be back, “We are so excited to be doing panto again, doing what we love. This is a show that was born in lockdown and has been on hold for what seems like an eternity. It’s a different kind of panto to what we’ve ever done before, and it’s an adult cast this time. This year we have fast paced musical numbers and the whole thing is totally crazy mad.”

Another former Dame, Adam Bond has been cast as the Mad Hatter. He said that to be cast in such an iconic role is quite daunting, but also extremely exciting to be able to put his own spin on it. He plans to make the role his own as much as he can saying that whilst Johnny Depp might have done two accents, he’s planning more including Scottish, Welsh, American, Scouse and English. Changing Climate, Changing Birdlife An increasing volume of research is showing that climate change is impacting bird species across the globe, in various ways. A study by the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO), published during COP26 in November, assessed the impact that it has already had on UK bird populations by relating their long-term trends to the responses of different species to climate change, temperature and rainfall. Within the UK, our breeding seabirds and upland breeding birds are the two groups most vulnerable to climate change. Fourteen seabird species are thought to be at risk of negative climate change impacts. These include our population of the charismatic uffin or sea arrot which could plunge by up to 90 per cent by 2050 due to the changes in marine environments caused by rising temperatures, if global warming is not checked. BTO’s CEO, Professor Juliet Vickery, said “This could represent a loss of over a million birds. There is a very real chance that our grandchildren ma ne er know what it is like to see a uffin in Britain and Ireland.”

Liz Cutting / BTO

by climate change, at this stage. There are big gaps in our knowledge for other birds however, particularly our wintering populations. With its extensive coastline and comparatively mild winters, the UK is internationally important for many species that breed in northern Europe and beyond, including ducks, swans, geese and wading birds. Volunteer birdwatchers taking part in the BTO-led Wetland Bird Survey (WeBS) collect vital information that tells us what is ha ening to the num ers of these irds o find out more about WeBS, visit; www.bto.org/webs

On the other hand, climate change seems to be contributing to population increases and expansion of breeding waterbirds, including species colonising from continental Europe. Coastal species and heathland species may also enefit from climate change round hetford this could lead to birds such as Dartford Warbler colonising Breckland heaths, and a continuing increase in the number of egrets. In the not-toodistant future, Great White Egret and Cattle Egret may well become as regular a sight locally as Little Egret already is today. Overall, a quarter of our breeding bird species appear to be negatively affected and a quarter may be responding positively. The remaining breeding species that have been studied seem relatively unaffected

Distant Gunfire A Timely Reminder During Remembrance The war memorial at Wretham stands outside the church of St. Ethelbert, not far from a corner of the Stanford Training Area, the largest infantry training ground in the UK. It was almost to be expected that, during Norfolk’s most unusual Remembrance ceremony, a quiet moment in the short service was punctuated by the sound of distant gunfire as modern da troo s trained to keep the peace.

Well over 100 people, local as well as from all over south east England, gathered for the 18th celebration of the service of Czech and Polish aircrew who flew ellingtons from the illage airfield in and now lie in war gra es in a corner of the churchyard. Royal Air Force ssociation and o al ritish Legion flags paraded in a ceremony organised by Thetford branch RAFA and led by former Rector, the Rev Canon Bob Baker. He was accompanied by the Rev Simon Richardson, now priest in charge for the village. The Exhortation was read by Thetford RAFA chairman John Macpherson, the Kohima Epitaph by Thetford RBL chairman Roger Smith. Last Post and Reveille were played by Andy Reeves from RAF Honington Voluntary Band, while Watton based piper Stan Hebborn played through the wreath laying and later when poppy crosses were placed on the war graves. Among wreaths laid were those by military attaches from the Czech, Polish and Slovak embassies in London, who had driven to Norfolk, Wretham Parish Council chairman Harold Smith, Wretham and Hockham RBL’s David Fitt, Breckland Council chairman Roy Brame, Thetford Mayor Mike Brindle and representatives from RAF Honington and local Air Cadet units.

Probus Members Meet ‘Lucy’ Probus Club members heard a talk from Jim Stebbings of the Dereham Club, telling the story of the Lusitania, known to those who knew and loved her as ‘Lucy’. He called his talk “Lies, Deception and Conspiracy”. The Royal Mail Ship Lusitania was launched in 1906 during the arms race between Germany and Britain, her construction being funded by a loan from the Admiralty who demanded alterations in her design to allow for wartime service, although she was never armed. She was designed to be luxurious and fast, to enable Cunard to capture transatlantic trade from German competition and in she riefl held the lue i and for the fastest crossing, taking less than 5 days.

She was faster than any U-boat, so why did she travel at reduced speed? Why did no escort arrive to accompany her through the U-boat zone? Was this a contrived propaganda incident? An interesting and thought-provoking talk.

When she left New York for Liverpool on her 202nd crossing in May 1915, German ports were under Allied blockade and as a reprisal U-boats were patrolling the waters around Britain with orders January 2022 Deadline to sink shi s showing ritish flags ro ided the The deadline for inclusion within the January were carrying arms. Help On Hand With Cat Allergies A new product has come onto the market to help people who are allergic to cats. It does not treat the human, it treats the cat. Its called Purina LiveClear and it is a revolutionary cat food proven to reduce allergens on cat hair and dander by an average of 47% starting from the third week of feeding. All cats produce a common allergen called Fe1 d1 in their saliva. When they eat LiveClear a key protein sourced from eggs safely binds to the Fe1 d1 and neutralises it. The Fe1 d1 allergen is a sticky protein which attaches to every surface and can remain there for a long time. Therefore you can maintain your current cat allergen management regime to allow Liveclear to add that e tra it of hel t comes in two fla ours salmon and turkey and is available for kittens, adult cats and cats over 7 years of age. With Christmas approaching, and if you have recently adopted a kitten, please be aware of certain hazards that can be dangerous. Christmas trees are especially tempting to a kitten to climb. Although it may appear funny, it really isn't. A few years ago a kitten of 15 weeks old hung itself on the lights on the tree while the owners were out. Therefore make sure your tree is in a room that the kitten cannot access unless you are there with him/her. It might be an idea to put the tree up without decorating it for a few days to allow the

kitten to get used to it being there. But once the tree is decorated, you need to be extra careful. Kittens think the low hanging baubles are there for their entertainment and may knock them off and break them which could harm kittens or cats. We do not home any cats of kittens or cats between 18th December and 4th January. This is because when you have a busy household with people coming in and out, it can be very unsettling for a new cat or kitten. You can come to us and reserve a cat or kitten, but they cannot go to their new home until after the festivities are over. For help or advice, or if you need assistance with the cost of neutering, then please call us on 01842 810018. Rita Thompson, Breckland Cats Protection

Not Just Books We’ll be open every Sunday in the run up to Christmas from 10.30am – 3pm to give you more time to get that Christmas shopping in. Since October, there have been some amazing Christmas titles published and many of them are featured in our Christmas catalogue. We still have a few if you haven’t picked up your copy yet. We’ve got local author Janet Collingworth signing copies of her book in the shop on Sunday 5th December between 11am and 12.30pm. Her recently published ‘Tell Me About The Farm Grandad’ is based on her memories of growing up in 1960s Norfolk and compares life in a village with that of the suburbs and the city; enjoy the happy times spent with Grandparents in Corpusty exploring the village, learning about the natural world, popping into the village shops and post office meeting illage characters and a whole array of Great Aunts and Uncles, who were always good for half a crown or a bag of sweets. Explore a gentler era, with traditional family gatherings for irthda s onfire ight and hristmas when Harold Wilson’s ‘white heat of technology’ was yet to arrive in Norfolk. The December Children’s Book of the Month is When the Sky Falls by Phil Earle, an extraordinary story. Set in 1941 and inspired by a true story, war is raging, and one angry boy has been sent to the city, where bombers rule the skies. There, Joseph will live with Mrs F, a gruff woman with no fondness for children. Her only loves are the rundown zoo she owns and its mighty silverback gorilla, Adonis. As the weeks pass, bonds deepen and secrets are revealed, but if the bombers set

Adonis rampaging free, will either of them be able to end the life of the one thing they truly love? Still Life by Sarah Winman is the Fiction Book of the Month for December. It recently won the Books Are My Bag Readers Award in the Fiction category and we have gorgeous Florentine-style Still Life wrapping paper available with each purchase. Still Life is a sweeping, joyful novel about beauty, family and fate e lo ed arah s first novel, When God Was a Rabbit and Still Life does not disappoint. on t forget if there is a s ecific book you are after and we don’t have it in stock: we have access to hundreds of thousands of titles through our wholesaler, making Christmas shopping a doddle and keeping it local on the high street. As we head into the Christmas period, let’s remember the wonderful celandic tradition of ola okaflod which translates as ‘Christmas Book Flood’ where books are gifted on Christmas Eve and you spend the rest of the night reading with a lovely mug of hot cocoa. (Hot Cocoa and book reading positively encouraged at other times of the year too!) Merry Christmas from the Team at Not Just Books and happy reading!

Scams On The Rise According to research by WhatsApp, 59% of Brits say they or someone they know have received a message-based scam in the last year. There are been a rise in reports of friend-in-need scams — where a scammer poses as someone you know to get you to give them money or asks you to forward a 6-digit PIN number. This includes a parent who received a WhatsApp message supposedly from their daughter saying they’d had to change their number. It went on to ask for help paying a bill but the parent was suspicious of the request and realised it was a scam. Luckily, it’s easy to protect yourself from scams on WhatsApp. Citizens Advice are supporting WhatsApp’s campaign in partnership with National Trading Standards’ Friends Against Scams.

scammers prey on people’s kindness, trust and willingness to help. Call: Verify that it is really your friend or family member by calling them directly, or asking them to share a voice note. Only when you’re 100% sure the request is from someone you know and trust, should you consider it

MONEY MATTERS

SMALLER VAT-REGISTERED BUSINESSES URGED TO PREPARE FOR ‘MAKING TAX DIGITAL’

Small VAT registered businesses have until April to prepare for a shake-up in the way they submit VAT returns, says Justin Wright of Lovewell Blake.

When Making Tax Digital (MTD) for VAT was introduced in 2019, it was compulsory for most businesses trading above the VAT threshold of £85,000 to keep records in digital format and submit their VAT returns using compatible software. Smaller businesses which were VAT registered but with turnovers below the threshold were not forced to adopt MTD – but that exemption is about to come to an end, and from April next year most VAT registered businesses will be covered by it. That means that those who are still using the ‘old’ method of filing returns logging into HM and manuall t ing the figures into o es are going to have to change the way they do things. Whilst it is understandable that businesses could be nervous and perhaps even daunted by the prospect of moving from manual records or spreadsheets to software the e erience of those firms which have already made the switch suggests that you shouldn’t regard MTD as a threat – but as an opportunity to improve the way you operate.

valuable time in inputting data. Don’t forget that this technology also allows your business advisers to give better quality advice, because it will also be based on the most accurate, up-todate information. It may be that MTD is the piece of red tape which forces many businesses to make the move to cloud accounting; I’m pretty confident that the ast ma orit will look ack in a year’s time and be very glad they made the move. That is certainly the experience amongst those who have already taken the plunge.

Several of our clients’ youngsters have been coming into the salon for skincare treatments. We start them on a good homecare cleaning regime and offer deep cleanse and exfoliate using steam and follow up with extractions and face masks to purify, hydrate and calm the skin as a treatment whilst at the salon. More and more young people are having skincare issues well before they are into their teens and puberty but the skincare range we are using on them is designed s ecificall for young skins and does not contain any harsh chemicals or alcohol which would strip the skin of the delicate acid mantle and cause surface dryness and or irritation. It is wonderful to see the improvement both in their skin and how they feel about themselves in general. If you are in any doubt please book them in for a teen facial, we offer this service for both boys and girls. I can’t believe as I write this that Christmas is nearly upon us! The salon has been busy with bookings and it’s a lot more positive this year with us all being able to get vaccinated. We would like to thank all our clients for their continued support throughout the most difficult and challenging times which we ha e all been facing and wish you all a happy and healthy festive season. New Portrait Celebrates Princess’ Legacy A new exhibition has opened at Ancient House Museum of Thetford Life featuring the story of Princess Catherine Duleep Singh. Marking the 150th anniversary of her birth, a new painting by Sikh artist Inkquistive was commissioned by author and collector, Peter Bance. Peter worked closely with the museum team to create the exhibition and has loaned a collection of artefacts belonging to the late Princess. The exhibition runs until February 2022. The second daughter of Maharajah Duleep Singh and his first wife Maharani Bamba, Catherine lived a life of privilege. Like her many of her siblings, she used this position to help others and her story is as fascinating as the more well known members of her family. The painting is based on the 1897 Layfayette image of Princess Catherine and includes images of Elveden Hall, The Golden Temple, Lahore Fort, and references many of Catherine’s astonishing actions throughout her life. Along the top of the painting is the inscription, Stimmen Für Frauen – Rights For women. Princess Catherine was a suffragist and lifelong campaigner for women’s rights. The doves represent 4 of her siblings, the LGBT+ rainbow ribbons - her relationship with Lina Schafer and her legacy to LGBT+ British Asians. The silhouetted family symbolises the many Jewish refugees who she helped escape Nazi

Germany. The broken glass references her friend Dr Hornstein who was arrested after Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, a government sanctioned attack on Jewish homes, schools, and businesses. Princess Catherine helped to secure his release from Oranienburg concentration camp. Another person she saved was violinist Alexander Polnarioff, his violin is featured leaning against an ornate archway from Elveden Hall. The arch itself was installed by her father as part of his renovations at the Hall, turning it into an Indian palace. Speaking about the exhibition, curator Oliver Bone said, “We are delighted to mark an important life that’s been out of the limelight. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the anniversary of her birthday and her contributions. Her life is part of the history of the world; with its connection to fleeing Nazi Germany and a move towards gender equality.” Museum Learning Officer Melissa Hawker said one of her favourite objects in the exhibition is the photo of Catherine with her sister Princess Bamba at Somerville Hall, Oxford and believes the image hasn’t been used in an exhibition before. “It’s right to shine a light on Catherine after Sophia was highlighted in 2018. Catherine shows us that you can impact change without breaking windows.” Above: Artist Inkquistive signs his new painting of Princess Catherine Duleep Singh Image: ©Ancient House Museum/Studio 5
