The Anchor Hotel in Bridge Street site played a central part in the life of the town for over 400 years. At one time it was known as the Blue Anchor, and in 1902, the Reynolds Anchor Commerical Hotel. It featured in Egon Ronay’s Good Hotel Guide in 1969 and the cast of Dad’s Army enjoyed its hospitality in the 1970s, along with a host of other stars such as Sir Bruce Forsyth. The final incarnation of the Anchor Hotel was demolished in 2012 to make way for the Riverside development. The building on the far right is the sole surviver from the site despite a local campaign to save the complex.
