Thetford Inner Wheel

A successful coffee morning was held last October at a member’s house when £550 was raised. It was decided to send donations of £100 to Thetford Salvation Army and Thetford Foodbank plus £70 to buy blankets for ShelterBox. At our November meeting plans were made for decorating a tree at the Methodist Christmas Tree Festival which would involve a lot of paper folding! Members decorated the tree with the theme of music. As is usual Thetford Inner Wheel was represented at the Remembrance Day Parade. After a very enjoyable dinner at our meeting held in November, Jane James (left) from Not Just Books gave us a fascinating insight into how she set up her new business. Despite the covid pandemic, a possible flood, suffering Covid herself and enduring a lockdown, her first year had been a success. As the title of her shop might suggest, there is more going on in the bookshop than just selling books. There are events for all age groups from Dinosaurs to Dungeons and Dragons to a Book Club. Just to add to all this she is this year’s Deputy Town Mayor! In December we invited our partners to the Christmas Dinner when the results of the quiz were announced. If I shave hairs to remove them, they will

grow back thicker and stronger? False. There is no way shaving can stimulate the roots of hairs. However, the hairs may appear thicker because the fine tapered end of the hair has been removed making the hair look and feel thicker.

Are the white marks on my nails caused

by Calcium deficiency? False. It is not a deficiency in calcium that causes white spots but there are several other reasons we may get them. It could be injury to the nail base, bad manicure procedures pushing back cuticles too harshly, an allergic reaction to things like polishes or polish remover even some hard hardeners. Acrylic nails can also cause trauma. Liver disease, like hepatitis and cirrhosis, is one of the more serious causes of white spotted fingernails.

I am thinking of having some sunbeds before my holiday to prevent my skin from

burning. False. A sunbed will not protect your skin from burning simply because you have accelerated the melanin ( pigment ) in your skin. There is no such thing as a ‘safe ‘ tan, the skin goes darker in colour because it is trying to protect the body from ultra-violet light. The U.K now has the highest reported cases of skin cancer in the world! Not something for us to be proud of. It has never been more important to be sensible & prevent burning or over exposing the skin to sun damage and wearing a high factor 25/30 sunblock.

A very Happy and Healthy New Year to all our members. I hope you had a peaceful Christmas. We held our Christmas Party on 9th December which proved very popular as we had over 80 members attend. It was very sad that the Ruby Sisters could not attend and we send them our good wishes. The Carnegie (Tom) saved the day as he had carols recorded which gave us a very lovely atmosphere, plus we all had quiz papers which kept us occupied. Thank you everyone who provided food and many thanks to the committee for organising this afternoon at fairly short notice. The next meeting will be Frazer Harrison speaking on the subject of Thomas Paine on 27th January at 2pm (poster adjacent). Our sign language group has restarted and we have several new members wanting to join. Our next Thetford U3A meeting will take place on the 14th January at 2.30pm at the United Reformed Church. All other Thetford U3A groups are on our website, complete with names and telephone numbers of all the group leaders who’ll be delighted to hear from you.
