Help With Neutering Costs

Happy New Year to all readers of this magazine. With the start of a new year, female cats are now coming into season and getting pregnant. They are sexually mature as young as 4 months of age and can have a litter of kittens by the time they are six months old and not fully grown themselves. Therefore it is important that all cats, whether male or female are neutered to help keep the cat population down. Neutering male cats stops them wandering off, getting into fights over female cats and picking up diseases such as Feline Aids, Cat Flu and Feline Leukaemia. Cats can sadly also acquire nasty abscesses from the fights that they get into with other male cats which often need veterinary treatment. Male cats spray themselves with their own urine, which is like an aftershave to attract females and can be very smelly. This disappears once they are neutered. They can also develop testicular cancer if they are not neutered. Female cats if left unneutered can have up to three litters of kittens a year which can be very ageing for them. They can also acquire mammary tumours and an infected uterus known as pyometra if they are not neutered. Most times cats have their kittens perfectly normally, but sometimes things can go wrong and they will need veterinary intervention. If a large kitten was to get stuck in the birth canal, for instance and a caesarian section is needed. This can be very expensive, anything up to £1000. It is much cheaper to have your female cat neutered to avoid large vet bills. If you are on a low income or know of anyone of your friends or neighbours who would qualify, we can help with the cost of neutering. We can give a voucher for £25 towards the cost of neutering a male cat and £40 towards the cost of neutering a female cat. You can take the voucher to any vets and then you will have to pay the difference. All vets charge different prices for the cost of neutering, so it is best to shop around and see where you get the best deal. We are still looking for indoor fosterers for our cats, in the areas IP24 - IP28. If you have a spare room, that has a washable floor you maybe able to help us. All expenses are paid so that you are not out of pocket – it is just your time that is required. It can be rewarding seeing a homeless cat go off to a lovely new home. And there are many more cats waiting to come into our care which means you wouldn't be without a cat for very long. It would also help if you are a car driver. If you would like any further information, please call our help line number below. If you need any help or advice or help with the cost of neutering, please call us on 01842 810018.

Happy New Year to you all and here’s to 2022 being a bit more normal than 2021 was! We’re really looking forward to the Thetford Player’s Panto this year (oh yes we are!!!) and to celebrate we’ve got an Alice themed window for January. Looking further forward, we’ll also be bringing the oral story telling tradition to Thetford with the fabulous Hugh Lupton who will be performing his The Mardling Acre for us on 11th February. Tickets will be available through the lovely Leaping Hare Box Office. As always, we like to share our picks of the fiction and children’s releases for the month. January’s Indie Book of the Month Little Wing by Freya North will be available to buy from indie bookshops from the 14th January, a week before the official publication date! Little Wing is the powerful story of two families over three generations. In the 1960s, a pregnant 16-year-old is banished to one of the remotest parts of the UK. Years later, Nell and Dougie are both at critical moments in their lives when their paths cross. Between Camden, Colchester and the Outer Hebrides, the three story lines collide when secrets are uncovered and answers sought. Little Wing is a novel about resilience, forgiveness and the true meaning of family, about finding one’s place in the world and discovering how we all belong somewhere and to someone. This is Freya’s 15th novel and we were lucky enough to get a proof copy to read – we hope you enjoy this powerful and moving novel as much as we did. The January Children’s Book of the Month title is Jummy at the River School by Sabine Adeyinka.

A joyful, glorious collision of classic boardingschool story with vibrant 1990s Nigeria; Jummy at the River School is a mystery that explores issues of justice, class and poverty. Jummy has won a place at the River School, the finest girls’ boarding school in Nigeria. Nothing can dampen her spirits, not even when she learns that her less fortunate best friend Caro won’t be joining her. By the Shine-Shine River, school is everything Jummy dreamt of, with friendly new girls, midnight feasts and sporting prizes. But when Caro suddenly arrives at the school to work, not to learn, Jummy must bring all her friends together to help. Did you know that Not Just Books is part of the National Book Tokens scheme?
