Vasanti’s Challenge Tops £1k
Challenge Success Helps Local Charities
Thetford Grandmother, Vasanti Patel is celebrating after completing her second climb challenge and raising over £1,000 for her chosen charities. My WiSH Charity at West Suffolk Hospital and Life Is 4 Living in Thetford have each benefited from a £550 donation thanks to Vasanti climbing the Castle Hill steps an epic 1,000 times. Originally Vasanti planned her challenge to finish in February, however the plucky 72 year old quickly managed to complete the 176,000 steps by November. Vasanti chose both charities for very specific reasons. Having originally been inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore’s 100 challenge, she wanted to support an NHS charity. Vasanti also wanted to encourage older people to get active and thought that Life is 4 Living was the perfect project closer to home. June Lewis from Life is 4 Living said the group were delighted that Vasanti wanted to support them, “We’re a friendly group offering a regular exercise class for older people. To keep mobile as we age is so important and we’re grateful that Vasanti’s funding will help us achieve this.” Vasanti said that she was delighted with the amount she had raised and wanted to thank everyone who had supported her, especially Graham Wade who set up her Just Giving page. She said every time she set out to climb the steps people passing would say hello and encourage her to carry on. “I like to get out and keep active,” Vasanti explained, “there are lots of groups in the town where you can take part in some exercise and it’s a good opportunity to make new friends too.” Vasanti is also a regular volunteer at Thetford Junior Parkrun.

Club Looks Back On A Successful Season
Thetford Town Cricket Club have had a successful season on and off the pitch in 2021. The 1st team secured promotion to the Premier League for the first time in over 30 years and their Club Secretary won Unsung Hero at the recent ECB Norfolk Grassroots Cricket Awards.
Natalie with her award
Natalie Chisholm was nominated by club Chairman Mick Piggott, who said, “Natalie first joined our club in 2017 as a parent of a junior player. It wasn’t long before Natalie was immersing herself in all aspects of the club.
Natalie helped out with organising social events and was instrumental in the most successful All Out Music fundraising event ever (raising over £8000). Now on the committee, she is the link between Norfolk Cricket Board and the club. When Covid hit, TTCC were one of the first clubs to open up training and this was down to the understanding of compliance, combined with an unbelievable work ethic that made TTCC a safe haven to practice and play cricket. She was also instrumental in the set up of our All Stars and Dynamos initiative for junior members. We are so grateful to have her.” Thetford Town Cricket Club is a friendly club that develops players of all ages and abilities. We have three senior teams playing Saturday and Sunday and four junior teams (girls, boys and mixed). For more information please visit the website:

This is often a time when we consider New Year’s resolutions, and we’d love you to consider us!
We are a free, weekly event held every Saturday at 9am at Abbey Meadows (IP24 1BB). The event is a 5km course, where you can run, walk, jog or a mix of all three. We are a friendly and inclusive group! Let me help with some myth busting… “I am going to be too slow, I haven’t ever run!” There is no such thing as being too slow, we have participants who finish the course in 17 minutes and others that finish the course in an hour. Everyone gets the same encouragement and support regardless of their speed. You’ll never be last, we have a volunteer tail walker who will always come in last and support you”. “I don’t know anyone, so I will feel awkward” You may arrive feeling nervous but we are all friendly, and you’ll speak to our first timer briefing volunteer. At the finish line we regularly have people chatting and catching their breath – a perfect place and time to introduce yourself. We have had many great friendships made at parkrun! If you aren’t new to parkrun, we always need volunteers. Please make it your resolution to volunteer at least twice this year with us.
