Ambrose Crawford From the Archives
William Ambrose Crawford, known as Ambrose, was born in 1880. He was the eldest son of William and Charlotte Crawford, who were some of the earliest pioneers of Alstonville. Ambrose attended Alstonville Public School before working on the family farm. He owned the first bicycle in Alstonville and in 1906, with his brother Pearson, rode all the way to Sydney to see the sights. In 1907 he married Olive White at Alstonville Methodist Church and in 1910 they had a house built by DC Connor & Son of Ballina on his property on Wardell Road, Alstonville, which he named “Olivene”. They had five daughters – Verlie, Eileen, Dorothy, Lorna and Dulcie. Olive died in 1963.

Community Kindness Teenager Program Direct Dubbo Flights
Lucy Newman
We recently received some lovely emails from local resident, Lucy Newman. She wanted to let us know how our comments on the wonderful community support found in this area had made her think of acts of kindness she had received from strangers. One instance was when an unknown Ballina lady was gardening. Lucy leaned over the fence and asked her about a shrub in her yard. The lady went inside and returned with secateurs, and a bag then cut some plant pieces for Lucy, so she too could enjoy the plant at home. At the time, this act warmed Lucys heart, and she still smiles while watching the cuttings grow. Lucy commented that it is these small acts of kindness that bring pleasure to others. Adding that she is sure, there must be hundreds of similar stories within the local community. We need cheering up in the present conditions, and Lucy suggested our magazine could encourage others to contribute their happy stories in a community kindness column. We want to thank Lucy for her heartwarming suggestion and contribution to our magazine. We look forward to publishing more local acts of kindness in the future. Contact Country & Coast Magazine, if you would like to feature in our community kindness column next edition.

Abandoned Northern Rivers Your face mask safety covered
Abandoned Norther Rivers
The Northern Rivers is one of the fastest growing areas in the country, and I have been lucky enough to have been raised in beautiful Byron Bay, and now fortunate enough to raise my children here.
In my previous job, I used to travel up and down the North Coast of NSW visiting beautiful coastal towns and idyllic inland villages. I soon noticed many beautiful old abandoned houses, barns, outbuildings and sheds, to name a few, and I couldn’t help but wonder what these building once were.
questions that needed asking.
With this photo of the barn outside of Tintenbar, my Instagram page Abandoned Northern Rivers (@ abandonednorthernrivers) was born. I started compiling a record of striking and sometimes eerie places around the North Coast.
I believe there is something to be said about these abandoned buildings, and I think I have started that conversation. Here in the Northern Rivers, there is constant change, growth and development in all of our little towns and villages, So while out driving one day, I pulled and I am amazed that there is still to the side of the road and took a evidence of the past today. photo of an old barn. Phone Candy on 0422 811 556 or call into Candylane Alstonville to find out any additional information. Candy (stay safe) x NSW Government Advice When to wear a mask With community transmission occurring in the state, the NSW Government recommends you take extra precautions to protect others. Wear a mask: • if it is hard to maintain 1.5 metres of physical distance from others • when in high-risk indoor areas such as public transport, supermarkets, shops, places of worship and entertainment venues • when caring for or serving vulnerable people • if working in a cafe, restaurant, pub, club or other high-risk indoor areas. Wearing a mask is not mandatory in NSW. However, NSW Health strongly
recommends people wear a mask when unable to physically distance, particularly in indoor settings, to keep everyone safe. You should also wear a mask if you: • have any symptoms and are seeking medical care • are going to get tested • are in the same room as another person when you have symptoms or have been asked to self-isolate.
Reusable cloth masks Cloth masks are effective in reducing transmission of COVID-19 to other people when they are made and worn correctly. To ensure adequate protection, cloth masks should have at least three layers of fabric: 1. The outer layer should be a waterresistant polyester or polypropylene fabric such as a reusable supermarket bags (not plastic) or exercise clothing 2. The middle layer should be high-grade cotton (e.g. bed sheets), polycotton (such as quilting fabric or a T-shirt) 3. The inner layer should be high-grade cotton (e.g. bed sheets) or polycotton (such as quilting fabric or a T-shirt). You will need more than one reusable cloth mask, be aware that: • cloth masks should be washed after each use or at least daily • prolonged use, reuse without washing can lead to self-contamination and infection (of the wearer) This information is provided by the NSW government health recommendations website, www.nsw.gov.au (face masks).
Ballina Archives Early British Settlement of Ballina Bul-loona had been settled for thousands of years by the Nyangbal clan of the Bundjalung Nation before Allan Cunningham charted the entrance to the Richmond River in 1827. The following year Captain Henry Rous explored the river and named it the ‘Richmond’ after his friend Charles GordonLennox, the 5th Duke of Richmond. It was not until 1842 that settlement by ‘white people’ commenced in Ballina. In 1841 a group of cedar cutters, including Joseph McGuire and Steve King, arrived overland from the Clarence in search of the red cedar which they found abundantly on the edges of the river. They returned the following year by ship with their families and settled in the area now known as Shaws’s Bay; as this was the best area for a ship to dock. It must be remembered that there were no breakwalls or Lighthouse beach and the entrance to the river was shallow, treacherous and stretched from the Northern end of now Lighthouse beach to South Ballina beach. See the difference between the coastline for Shaws Bay between 1887 and 1916 maps with the building of the breakwall. So, it was at Shaw’s Bay that the first settlement started and was called Ballina. What is now known as Ballina island was back then called West Ballina.
The naming of Ballina has a bit of history. Apparently, the authorities first called the settlement Depford however, an 1845 map by the surveyor Burnett, shows the mouth of the river with the indigenous name Bul-loona. The next map in 1853 by the surveyor Peppercorn, names the proposed town as Woolwich however, when the site for the town was proclaimed by the Department of Land and Public Works on 6th Nov 1856 it was referred to as Ballina; a more British version of Bul-loona. Ballina District Museum The Ballina Historical Society is a not-for-profit community group focusing on preserving the history of the Ballina district. They have recently leased the local heritage Pimlico Hall to create a museum to educate the public on the region. The society invites anyone with interest in the history of our area to join. They are always looking for photos to add to the collection or donations to support the museum. Ballina Shire Council Column Bargains and hidden treasures
Councillor David Wright
It is my pleasure to update you on what’s new and happening in the beautiful Ballina Shire. Plateau residents will be pleased to know the Alstonville pool reopens in September with refurbished kiosk, amenities and change rooms, including an improved accessible change room. Thank you for your patience while the upgrades have been underway. The design plans are being finalised for the Wollongbar District Park. It will be a wonderful recreational space for the whole community to enjoy. I am really excited about this project and if you haven’t yet seen the concept plans, go to Council’s website to see why.
Closer to the coast, the new boardwalk at Boulder Beach is underway. This is part of the upgrade of the existing three kilometre section of the Coastal Recreational Walk from Sharpes Beach
to Pat Morton lookout. This is one of the most beautiful coastal walks in the country that we can all look forward to enjoying by the end of the year. The Coastal Shared Path from Skennars Head to Lennox Point will soon be unveiled too. It is the final section of the shared path that will allow pedestrians and cyclists to travel safely between Lennox Head and Ballina. What a great asset this will be for our whole community. To keep up to date on these and other projects, council meetings or matters of importance to you and your family, you can subscribe to Council’s email Newsletter, go to www.ballina.nsw.gov.au/eNews On behalf of councillors and staff, stay safe and I look forward to providing an update in the next edition of Country & Coast Magazine.

Australian Seabird Rescue is a non-profit organisation which began in 1992 by a local Ballina man named Lance Ferris. Lance was a local legend who began this organisation by rescuing sick and injured pelicans in the local area. Unfortunately, Lance passed away in 2007, and there was great concern about the legacy of Australian Seabird Rescue. Luckily with the amazing support of the local community and dedicated volunteers at ASR, we are continuing to grow each year. Not only do we rescue pelicans, we now rescue all seabirds, shorebirds, sea turtles and sea snakes. Australian Seabird Rescue is home to the Ballina-Byron sea turtle hospital. Each individual is different; however, sick sea turtles typically are found stranded on beaches displaying signs of complete emaciation and barnacle coverage, which are all signs of poor health. We have had an extremely busy year with 89 sea turtles coming into our care during the 2019 financial year; this is double from the previous year. During the last few months, we have also seen a steady increase of seabirds and shorebirds needing urgent care. Within a six week time period, we had 15 cases of seabirds with fishing related injuries. Now more than ever a reminder that our wildlife are suffering not only environmental impacts but from human induced activities as well. While you are fishing with your family this summer, if you accidentally catch a seabird, please do not cut the line, call our rescue number on 0428 862 852, and we will be able to help. For more information about the work we do, please head to our website www.seabirdrescue.org.au or follow us on Facebook or Instagram.

Ideas to help small business
With times being a little rough on small businesses at the moment, I thought a list of some practical budget-friendly ideas and marketing options might be useful. Networking An excellent opportunity to meet new people and talk about your business. There are many networking groups and local chambers of commerce in our area. If you actively network, that is, actually attend events, participate and connect with people, it works. If you attend events where you may meet potential customers, get better results by thinking of something you can contribute that will get noticed, get shared, and bring you the reward you deserve. Arrive at your next event prepared with an offer. It might be as simple as having a special message on the back of your business card saying, “Since we are now practically friends, visit my website and get mates rates with 20% off your next purchase”. This is a great way to get people to visit your website, remember you, and ultimately create an opportunity. Referral & Loyalty Programs Whether you have been in business for years or a few weeks, referrals and loyalty programs are a great opportunity. So consider creating a referral program, even just as a trial, where existing customers get a discount or gift when they refer prospects to you. Another option is to offer target (loyalty) program, where customers can build up to free or discounted items by purchasing with you regularly. These are often seen in coffee shops where you get a stamp for each visit and on your 10th visit you get a free coffee. These programs can be adapted to many different industries and could help you to stand out from your competition. Crowd Funding Have you got a great idea for a product, film, game, design or technology? But no funding? You could consider crowdfunding. A great way to fund big and small projects, brought to life through the support of individuals around the world. Project creators set a funding goal and deadline, if people like a project, they can pledge money. It may seem daunting but can be amazingly effective in creating momentum. Creators keep 100% ownership of their work as backers are supporting projects to help them come to life. Instead, project creators offer rewards to thank supporters. For example, in the past, I have helped manage Kickstarter campaigns for other organisations, including campaigns setup, rewards brainstorming, branding design, producing marketing materials, developing websites and social accounts. So, I decided to put these skills to use and managed my own campaign. I launched a children's educational storybook together with a kids product line. The rewards included; advanced book copies, signed versions, posters, stickers, digital downloads, drawing books, bookmarks etc. All were relatively affordable and helped attract backers, who in return, successfully funded the project. Virtual Assistant If you are wasting time on administrative tasks, without the resources to hire extra staff, then working with an Australian Virtual Assistant (VA) is a great solution. VAs are generally self-employed, providing administrative, technical, or creative assistance to clients remotely from a home office. Because VA's are independent contractors rather than employees, clients are not responsible for employee-related taxes, insurance, super, loading or benefits, just VA's fees. Clients also avoid the logistical problem of providing office space, equipment or supplies and receive 100% productive work. Printed & Digital Marketing Ideas • Business cards: Very affordable, you can leave these everywhere. • Vehicle marketing: Your vehicle could be a moving business advertisement. There are many options out there from small car magnets to entire vehicle wraps. Ensure your business name, logo and contact details are clearly visible. • Free directories: List on free business directories, such as Google along with local tourism and community websites to generate extra leads. • Communication: creating social media accounts that are appropriate for your business, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter etc. • Business website: Your customers need to see that you are active within your business. A website creates the opportunity to tell customers about your services or products, events, special offers and more. • Youtube: Create a video of your business, product or service. You can share the video to your website and social media to engage with current and potential customers. • Contests: Run a contest through your website and social media accounts. This could improve website traffic and increase social media followers. Magazine Advertising Shameless plug here... but you could advertise in Country & Coast. We would love to help promote your business and are always finding extra ways to reward supporters. You will not only get an advertisement, but your logo will appear in our sponsors' section along with the opportunity to have free articles and social media shoutouts. Don't forget to email photos and details of any successful campaigns you manage from this advice, as another budget-friendly promotion for business is free editorial submission to media. Looking forward to hearing from you, Lindsey.

Alstonville Florist
It is usually an exciting, super busy and enjoyable time for our creative Alstonville Florist team. However, with pandemic restrictions this season is very unsettled, with lots of weddings and large celebrations being put off to a later date, some postponed for the second time. Yet, for many couples, love is winning out! Some romantics are opting out of big celebrations and coming back to the romance of yesteryear by eloping or planning an intimate ceremony with just a few close friends. While the gathering might be smaller, brides still want beautiful flowers and their bouquet to be a real feature. And we are finding with smaller weddings the bride and groom are more relaxed and focussed on ‘their wedding’ rather than the organisation involved in hosting a large gathering. Some couples who are torn between having a small wedding on the planned date or postponing, have decided on a small intimate wedding celebration now and a big party when restrictions are lifted. One couple even has a ten-year vow renewal in mind – now that is forward-thinking.

I love my shop Alstonville Quality Meats are located in the Main Street of Alstonville. They sell a wide range of gourmet meats, and deli items including Organic, Free Range, Gluten Free and Paleo Products. The first thing you will notice when walking in the front door of this beautiful historical building is the friendly staff waiting on the other side. There are always new and intriguing products, and each visit we find something exciting to try. So make sure to pop in and say hello to this wonderful team!
Describe your shop in 5 words Decadent, Family, Historical, Professional and Welcoming. What was the inspiration behind Alstonville Quality Meats? After 6 years in business, and fast outgrowing 83A Main St, the opportunity arose for the Alstonville Quality Meats team to re-open the Original butcher shop built in 1943. It is such a beautiful building, and we enjoyed bringing it back to its original magnificence. What is the best part of your job? We absolutely love waking up at 4am every single morning and not getting home until dark hahaha. But on a serious note, we really love supporting the local farmers in our area, having the ability to supply the best quality meats to our local and surrounding communities, and I undeniably love working together with the Alstonville Quality Meats team of astounding personalities. What do you love about your shop? It is so wonderful watching the generations of families shopping throughout the years

I love my shop
with us; it makes us feel really good. We also love the fact that our butcher shop is open plan, which means everyone can see us making sausages, cooking hams and bacon, and the everyday workings of a butcher shop. What are some emerging trends? With COVID-19 changing the way we all live, we have noticed a steer towards online shopping. This is an excellent service for the vulnerable in our society, along with those who are extremely safety conscious. We deliver from Byron Bay through to Dunoon Tuesday through to Friday. Please feel free to check out our website for more details: www.aqmeats.com.au What do you feel you bring to the town? Our team are trained with an "I Care" approach ensuring our customers' values, wants, and needs are catered for the old fashioned way with a new age twist. Our team have a job to do, and they know exactly what is expected, yet when there is a yarn to be told or fun to be had, you can bet it will be happening here at Alstonville Quality Meats. This makes for a fun place to work as a team and gives a great ambience for our customers' enjoyment. Something people may not know? Ashley was diagnosed with Coeliac disease and knows firsthand how hard it is for people with food allergies to shop for real nutritious food. Consequently, we now specialise in family friendly Gluten free meal solutions including pies,

lasagnes, sausages, burgers, marinades, all our crumbed products, and we also make our own Keto bacon which is delicious. What do you love about working in the Northern Rivers? We love the diversity of people we serve in this area ranging from real foodies, Dads cooking a weekend BBQ, Mums trying to decide what to cook for the family, to the little newlyweds making ends meet. Everyone has a story, and we love hearing about what’s happening in their lives. We also love the gorgeous landscapes and amazing beaches of the Northern Rivers. It is just a completely gorgeous place to live, work, and relax. Most recent team achievement? While attending the Annual Butchers Awards night held in Sydney September 2019, we were absolutely stoked to have received “NSW Retailer of the year” for the butcher industry. Most popular item you stock? Unquestionably the most popular product we sell would have to be our range of gourmet sausages that have won us over 60 awards in the past 8 years. yetiSalts
A love of herbs, gardening and my own kitchen creations saw the birth of yetiSalts last year. Sharing my passion for herbs and blending them with beneficial salts that provide nutrients to the body was the goal. Sourcing authentic, highquality Celtic, Himalayan, Sea and Epsom salts was crucial along with being produced in Australia or an Australian company that could provide these salts. The organic herbs, flowers and fruits mostly come from my garden. I love the hand-harvesting, drying and preparation of the herbs. Everything is fresh, each order of salts is handmade when the order comes in – not left stocked on a shelf! The bath salts are a blend of Epsom and Himalayan salt with fresh, dried herbs/flowers and therapeutic essential oils. Great self-pampering for either soaking in the tub or a body scrub. Whereas, the herb salts base is Celtic salt. I can make customised herb blends from a list of available herbs and salts. Plain jars of any salt are also available. Cooking Tips I use the salts in my own cooking as either rubs or a crust for meat or fish. They are also great sprinkled on vegetables for baking, or in salads for special seasoning. A highlight for many is hot chips (or roasted vegetables) sprinkled with the lime & chilli, lemon & black pepper or Cajun salt. True wow factor! If you are having a dinner party, another crowd pleaser is quality olive oil, a crusty cob loaf and a herb salt dip. Rock Chic Eggs
After a few years hiatus, we are back to supply the Northern Rivers with seriously fresh free range eggs. Back in 2016 Rock Chic Eggs were sold out, providing eggs to LUSH Australia, About Life stores across Sydney, Red Lantern, Lochiel House, Cornersmith Cafe, The Opera Bar and North Bondi Fish, to name but a few. When Rock Chic Eggs founder, CM Murphy moved the family horse breeding/training operation, along with himself, to the cleanest air in the land at South Ballina, he made a delightful discovery. Which was between the sweetness of the sea breeze, the subtropical climate and coastal bushland to rummage within, he had accidentally found a poultry oasis. The Murphy family, Chris, Caroline, Louis and Stevey, will officially be rebooting Rock Chic Eggs Northern Rivers in Spring 2020. Their birds are treated like kings and queens. The breeding barn has 24/7 classical music to ensure that all the hens are laid while the free-rangers are busily rummaging and fossicking outdoors with a dose of homegrown sprouts. They are fed and cared for on the freshest and highest quality produce and are delivered fresh to local retailers and restaurants within 72 hrs of lay. Tyre Safety Tips When was the last time your tyres were inspected for wear? If you can’t remember, you are not alone; it is something drivers often take for granted. An important aspect of car maintenance is ensuring your tyres are in good condition; here are five tips for improving safety. 1. Tread Depth (Tyre Baldness) Tyre tread is essential as it assists with removing water between the tyre and road, preventing the risk of aquaplaning.
18
Trades & Services
Tyres wear out over time, with uneven road surfaces and driving practices like high-speeds and hard braking accelerating the process. Checking tread wear indicator bars will assist with determining when new tyres are required.
2. Tyre pressure Correct inflation will protect against tyre damage, reduce possibility of spinning out of control and improve fuel consumption. Every month you should check your tyre pressure, check inside the fuel flap or car user manual for the recommended PSI. 3. Tyre rotation To ensure even wear and tear, tyres should be moved from one position to another. As front tyres carry more of the car’s weight, they can wear out around twice the rate of the rear tyres. Therefore, rotating can extend the tyres life with most manufacturers advising rotation every 8,000 to 10,000kms. 4. Wheel alignment Through properly aligning the axles and wheels, you will ensure your car handles at an optimum level. This will improve safety, save fuel and protect against premature wear. 5. Repair and replacement If you are unsure of roadworthiness, have them inspected by a specialist. An expert will check the tyres internal and external condition while ensuring they comply with legal and manufacturer requirements. Northern Rivers NSW
Northern Rivers Together, the regional Steering Committee behind the Northern Rivers NSW Brand, has been encouraged by widespread support for the new initiative.
“We’ve had more than 100 Northern Rivers businesses and community groups sign up to promote and use the new the brand in its first few months,” said Simon Stahl, CEO of the Northern Cooperative Meat Company (NCMC) and interim Chair of Northern Rivers Together. “This has included some of the region’s largest entities – such as NCMC, Southern Cross University (SCU) and Stone & Wood – alongside some of our emerging success stories,” added Mr Stahl. Mr Stahl said that NCMC intended to “use the brand to anchor our products to the region, famous for natural beauty and loving, caring, innovative people.” Dean Gould, Chief Marketing Officer at SCU, highlighted the value of the brand to the region’s university: “The brand will assist SCU promote its Lismore campus nationally and internationally. Harnessing the diverse and wonderful assets and benefits the region offers as part of our messaging to prospective students and academic staff will make the university’s proposition even more powerful.” Jamie Cook, Co-Founder of Stone & Wood brewery, said that “In today’s world consumers want to know more about where their food and drinks come from. It’s not just about the people or the
business behind them but it’s also about the provenance – that sense of place, and the source or origin of the products that is important. The Northern Rivers NSW brand brings a sense of quality and soulfulness to the Stone & Wood brand.” Georgina Inwood, owner of the award winning food tourism business Table Under a Tree, said that they had adopted the brand and started displaying it on their website as a terrific place brand for where they operate. “To me, the things that make the Northern Rivers special resonate strongly with the brand. It shows our sense of nature and place and people, and really speaks to the love of locally made food and drinks. And there is a genuine collective voice. As a small family business, we love that we can stand alongside a diverse range of businesses, including the big guys, and all sing the praises of the local region together.” Northern Rivers Together – a collaborative partnership of regional businesses, industry bodies and government representatives – is driving the new Northern Rivers NSW Brand. Northern Rivers Together’s goal is to harness the power of the region’s 250,000+ population to promote the new brand, both within and beyond the region. Have you heard about Aquaponics?
Looking for a hobby?
Aquaponics is a combination of aquaculture; the farming of fish or other aquatic animals and hydroponics the production of vegetables without soil. Aquaponics couples these two systems together in a symbiotic relationship: the fish feed, they then produce ammonia, which in turn is changed through a process called nitrification into nitrites and then nitrates. The process of nitrification is not only beneficial to the fish, transforming harmful ammonia into harmless nitrates; it also, in the process, creates high levels of nitrates for the growing of plants. As the water cycles through the system, the end result is clean water returning to the fish tank.
If you are looking for a new home hobby, we have the editorial for you. Over the next few editions, we will be listing different arts and crafts you could try at home. There is nothing quite like dreaming up a new project, brainstorming the look, then having a go and looking at your final result.

Art & Craft Ideas
High Flow Acrylics Artwork This is such a quick and easy way to create custom, unique art pieces for your home. I have to admit; when I did this with my friends, it took much longer to clean up than create the art. The secret is to be prepared before you start pouring the paints. The pour painting technique is when acrylic paints are mixed and poured onto canvas or other surfaces to create abstract artworks. Once the paint is on the surface, it spreads across the canvas, or the artist can lift the canvas and move the paint to the desired areas. Tip: Watch a few Youtube videos on High Flow Acrylic pours, this will give you an idea of how many colours to use and how to move the surface to get the desired result you are after.
Aquaponics deals with the issues found in both aquaculture and hydroponic. Both are prone to needing substantial water changes as the systems become overwhelmed with unwanted waste products, whether it be fish waste or chemical imbalance. By combining the two and allowing a natural process to take place, the result is the farming of both healthy fish and plants in a system that uses only 10% of the normal water usage. This is particularly important in our drought-prone land, Australia. System Types As Aquaponics does not rely on soil to grow produce, the systems are similar to that of hydroponics: 1. Media Bed systems are garden beds lined with a pond liner and then filled with 20mm gravel, clay balls or scoria. These systems are great for growing leafy greens and your fruiting vegetables, as the water from the fish tank fills the bed and then is drained via a bell siphon feeding and oxygenating your plants roots-ebb and flow! Photo: Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussel Sprouts and snow peas all grown in gravel and fed fish poo. Planted as small seedlings 8 weeks ago. Already harvesting! 2. Deep Water Culture systems use beds lined with pond liner and then filled continuously with water pumping through from the fish tank. The plants are suspended on foam rafts, and the roots benefit from the highly-nutrient rich water that is aerated. These systems are great for growing leafy greens. Photo: 1 of 4 Deep Water Culture beds. Each bed will supply 484 leafy greens per month.
Quilling You do not see a lot of quilling around anymore, but I used to love to do this with my mother when I was a child. A few years ago, I started to quill again with my friend, and ever since then, we have had regular quilling nights. A relaxing, creative and relatively inexpensive craft, quilling involves, using strips of paper that are rolled, shaped and glued together to form a decorative design. I start the process by sketching a design. Then I glue any paper outlines or edging. Next, I roll strips of paper into coils using a quilling tool, they are then pinched into the desired shapes and glued together. After the quilling is completed, I then add embellishments, such as stars, glitter, 3D flowers etc. Lastly, when the artwork is completely dry, I frame the artwork in a shadow box. Tip: Start by searching for quilling designs online or howto videos on youtube. If you are unable to source materials locally, you can buy quilling kits online.
3. NFT system or Nutrient Film Technique is where a tube-like channel is used to grow your plants. The water from the fish tank flows through these channels giving nutrients to your plant roots, great for leafy greens, strawberries etc. Aquaponics, a better way to grow In a world where resources such as water and land are in short supply and the need for healthy organically grown food is becoming more and more prevalent and desired, there is no better way to grow than aquaponically. At Ebb N Flow Farm in Coutts Crossing, they can produce 484 large organic lettuces a month from one Deep Water Culture system measuring 5.4m x 2.4m in a little over 12sq m of land. Aquaponics is a sustainable, chemical-free form of farming that everyone can participate in, from the commercial farmer to the backyard hobbyist. We are thrilled to have Tiarni (or Arni for short) at the Macadamia Castle Animal Park.
This school holidays, create some awesome tasting sherbet using an acid and base reaction with this quick DIY kids experiment.
Macadamia Castle
Tiarni is an indigenous word for "gorgeous one" and was named by Gretel Packer. Tiarni was delivered to us by Laura and Nic from Taronga Zoo Sydney around 18 months ago. Tiarni is a four year old male koala who was moved out of Taronga as he was coming into full maturity as a breeding male and living in a group of males was no longer appropriate for Arni. Taronga's population has been highly skewed to males in the past few years, and as Arni's family tree is already well represented, Arni needed a new home. Koala conservation is close to our heart here at the Macadamia Castle. We are deeply concerned about the loss of koala numbers in our area. We love anything we can do to inform people how to protect this iconic species. Arni helps to remind us just how special and inspiring Koalas are. He is an excellent ambassador. Make sure to visit Tiarni at the Macadamia Castle at 419 Hinterland Way, Knockrow. An ideal outing for the whole day filled with entertainment. Visit some furry friends at the Castles animal park, play a round of minigolf, browse the retail store and enjoy great food from the Cafe. For further details visit: www.macadamiacastle.com.au
Koala Facts Koalas are folivores - they eat foliage - and they prefer to consume eucalyptus foliage. The koala has a specially designed digestive system which can manage and break down the harmful chemicals and compounds found within eucalyptus. But it takes a lot of energy to do this. The result? Sleeping Koalas. Koalas sleep approximately 18-20 hours each day because of their diet and how difficult it is to digest.

Materials: • 3 Tbsps Icing Sugar • 1 Tsp Bicarb Soda (Your Base) • 1 Tsp Citric Acid (Your Acid) • 1 Tbsp Jelly Crystals • Measuring spoons • Mixing bowl • Storage container for your delicious sherbet Method: 1. Measure icing sugar and place into a mixing bowl. 2. Add bicarb soda and citric acid and thoroughly mix. 3. Place jelly crystals into the mix and stir it through. 4. Have a taste test! You should add more of the different materials until you get your desired taste. How does it feel on your tongue? It should have a good bubbly/fizzing feeling. The science behind your experiment What we have created is called a chemical reaction. Basically, the atoms in the different substances have changed the atoms that they are bonded to rearranging themselves and making new substances. When you do your taste test and feel the fizzing sensation, that is because of the acid/base reaction taking place. The citric acid (acid) and bicarbonate of soda (base) react together in what is known as an acid/carbonate reaction. Acid + Base --> Carbon dioxide + Water + Salt In this case, the reaction is: C6H8O7 (Citric acid) + 3NaHCO3 (Sodium Bicarbonate) --> CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) + H2O (Water) + C6H5O7Na3 (Sodium Citrate) On their own, citric acid and bicarb soda have a bland taste, that is why we add the sugar and jelly crystals to create something exciting and sweet. Why not mix multiple jelly crystal flavours to invent your unique mix!

Putting your step back into Spring Lets Talk Skin!
Candy Lane Fashion
So hoping we have seen the other side of this Covid 19, well at least the warm weather will start to improve many germs, so bring on spring! Let’s talk a little fashion in the Northern Rivers to break up the conversation of many groundhog days at the moment. Well, I can assure you that the runways in Europe and New York have not slowed down the barrage of style, colour and fabrics flowing ready for a new showing of spring and summer 20 and 21. So other than the mask fashion seen all over the world right now, let us talk about a few accessories that are making a come back from 70’s and 80’s. These new trends include garter belts, tailored corsets, braced and boned bodice style outerwear. Are you in shock? Yes, you heard correctly, these embellishments are making quite a comeback. While Grecian style dresses are stunning and give compliments to a feminine look, this season Crochet is the latest obsession. Yes, girls remember, it is an open web knit in white, nude and soft beige making a serious comeback. Therefore, watch out for these items or start getting yourself ready for your wardrobe revamp from the 70’s or 80’s. So for us locals living in paradise, think of adding little bits to your existing wardrobe to revamp a bit of what we already have. Keep an eye out on my Facebook page @Candylane Fashion for some of my crazy videos that will give you a giggle... hahaha. Love always, Candy

Plateau Medi-Spa
At Plateau Medi-Spa and beauty, we are your gym for your skin. We work alongside leading experts in the aesthetic industry, and undergo regular training so our clients can trust the treatment's provided in our salon. Plateau Medispa offers a holistic approach to skin health using product lines and companies that help support optimal results. Welcoming DMK into the salon. DMK is the Worlds Leader in Paramedical Skin Revision Education. Using the principles of biochemistry, DMK products have formulated a range of treatments and products that encourage skin to perform like youthful, healthy skin. Signs of ageing are a result of the skin’s functioning declining; a person’s collagen production can start to slow down from as early an age as twenty-one! DMK is so effective that it encourages the skin to function at its full capacity like it did when it was younger. It is much easier to prevent skin conditions than to revise, but it is never too late to start looking after your skin. Most skincare brands will only focus on the surface, temporarily plumping out the wrinkles and lines but not changing the reason they occurred in the first place, meaning they will just return. DMK treatments and products at Plateau Medi-spa provide longterm results, by getting to the core of the problem and revising the decline that causes skin to age. No matter what point a person is along the ageing journey, Plateau Medi-Spa endeavours to help clients' skin to look as youthful as they feel within.

When jewellery is worn every day, it is exposed to accidental hits and bumps that cause damage. But when is the last time you took your rings and other items to a jeweller to have them professionally inspected?
So, what does a jewellery inspection usually involve? Most often, the jeweller will check how safe your items are, clean them, and polish them if you want. We can also provide you with a valuation for insurance purposes for an additional price. All rings made by us will come with a valuation if requested. Checking the safety of your items is the main reason you should have your jewellery inspected. We will review your setting for problems such as worn, bent or broken claws. Your stones will be examined to see if they are loose, and if they are, they will be tightened. Your items will be checked for worn and broken parts.
It is good to have your jewellery professionally inspected at least once a year as there may be problems that you are not aware of. You do not want to wait until it’s too late as it is more expensive to replace a diamond than it is to repair a claw. Although once a year is an absolute minimum for how often you should have your jewellery inspected, this also depends on how frequently you wear a particular piece. Items you wear very rarely should not need to be inspected as often. Whereas, jewellery you wear regularly, should be checked at least two or three times a year. It is also a good idea to have a piece of jewellery checked after you have bumped it hard. You never know which part of it may have bent or broken because of the hit.
Come in for a visit to DJM jewellers and have your items inspected long before Christmas.

The benefits of Aperitifs
Increase Your Strength & Mobility
Aperitifs are drinks taken before meals. Their purpose is to whet the appetite and prepare the digestive tract for the process of digestion. In general, aperitifs are bitter tasting. Bitter taste receptors on the tongue and in the digestive tract react to the bitter flavour by releasing digestive juices and enhancing the process of absorption and elimination. The modern diet has all but eliminated the bitter flavour from our palate, and therefore, the bitter taste is quite shocking until the taste buds are reacquainted with this flavour.
If your health and fitness goals include increasing your strength and improving your mobility, then you should be using Remedial Massage Therapy and Functional Range Conditioning in your program.
Sandy | The Village Herbalist
Bitter herbs have traditionally been used to relieve symptoms of indigestion such as reflux and heartburn, bloating and flatulence. Bitter herbs have been used to normalise the function of the liver and gall bladder, promoting digestion of fats and fat soluble vitamins. In Ayurvedic medicine, bitters are used to balance sweet cravings and reduce sugar intake. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the bitter flavour relates to the heart and the feeling of joy. The Village Herbalist has two bitter formulas in it’s range, lovingly blended and handcrafted in store. Dandelion and Orange Bitters are for the bitters novice, while Gentian, Cardamom and Orange Bitters are for the bitter initiates. Both may be added to drinks and sipped slowly, savouring the experience and re-educating your taste buds!
Reactiv8 Sports & Remedial Massage of any damaged tissue as well.
Why? Functional Range Conditioning (FRC) is a strength and mobility building system aimed specifically at making your joints stronger and healthier. By strengthening your joints, the muscles that move them can produce greater force, absorb greater loads and dissipate energy more easily. When you have greater mobility and control of the joints, your body moves better and is at less risk of injury when you’re exercising or playing sports!
The benefits of RMT and FRC are definitely not limited to those just focused on increasing their strength and mobility. Anyone who is experiencing joint pain and movement issues can benefit from the system too. Pain in the body is the number 1 reason people aren’t moving as well or enough as they should. Reducing or removing pain should be a priority for improving movement. Movement is used a predictor of your future health, so investing in improving how you move now can have major upside to how your body ages in the future.
FRC used in conjunction with Remedial Massage Therapy (RMT) will fast track the process of building stronger joints. Using RMT we assess your joints and muscles then treat problematic areas that aren’t moving correctly. Techniques such as Neuromuscular Technique, Myofascial Release and Joint Mobilisations improve the function of an area and increase the rate of growth and repair
Reactiv8 Sports & Remedial Massage are dedicated to making a difference in the quality of the lives of our clients. By improving how they move and educating them on the importance of including healthy movement practices, we can mitigate the risks of injury as they get older. Our services are Health Fund approved and recognised by other local health professionals.

Short getaways with family and friends Travel Photography Girraween National Park Tips & Advice One place we love to visit is Girraween National Park, located on the Queensland border just North of Tenterfield and South of Stanthorpe. Girraween is approximately 3 hours from the Ballina region. A great place to take family or friends for a weekend of camping and exploring when the border reopens, and we return to our usual way of life.
Girraween, which means 'place of flowers', is a 400 acre National Park filled with massive granite formations, intensely balanced boulders and clear running streams—surrounded by forests of blackbutt, red-gum and stringybark trees. In Spring, you can also glimpse stunning wildflower displays throughout the region. Including golden wattles, dainty orchids, pea flowers and flannel flowers. Your adventure could consist of viewing frogs, lizards, snakes, echidnas, brush-tailed possums, wallabies, turquoise parrots, Yellow-tufted honeyeaters and fair-wrens, which weave through the woodland. The park itself consists of well-maintained walking tracks. There are 17kms of trails suiting a range of capabilities and ages, including a 280m stroll beside Bald Rock Creek to an 11km return walk of Mount Norman. The majority of tracks begin close to the visitor information centre. Start your journey with a visit to the visitor centre for a wealth of valuable information, displays, maps and more. The friendly staff will assist you in planning your walking tracks and camping adventure.
There are two National Park camping grounds available; Castle Rock and Bald Rock Creek. Both camping areas cater for camper trailers, motorhomes and tents. These areas are located in pleasant open forest settings and within close proximity of walking tracks, picnic tables, toilets and the information centre. Camping permits are required, and fees apply. For further information, to view maps and some spectacular photos of Girraween National Park, visit: www.parks.des.qld.gov.au/parks/girraween or www.queensland.com and search Girraween. Have fun camping! Lindsey
For beautiful and lasting memories of our travels, quality photographs are a must. Every destination visited has its own unique character and ambience. Therefore, achieving the perfect image is essential in preserving our favourite memories. Below we have outlined a few tips to help you capture your next adventure. Your Camera Whether it is a special camera or a phone, make sure you get to know the settings for your equipment. A few simple tweaks, like turning the flash off and changing the aperture, shutter speed, or ISO can make significant adjustments to your images. Also, make sure to clean your lens before every use, particularly on a phone, as it is easy for it to become dirty from daily use. Landscapes There are various forms of landscapes to capture on your journey; seacoasts, mountains, forests, deserts, plains, river, lakes etc. All have their own traits and special features. Whichever type, consider what the crucial qualities are you would like to capture. For example; if it was an intense, rocky, wave-washed coast, you may want to shoot in stormy, gloomy weather where you can emphasise the waves crashing against the shore as opposed to a bright sunny day. Cities, Towns & Monuments Similar to landscapes, these have their own characteristics. You should always be able to locate a unique element. To successfully shoot these areas, you should show the skyline, monument or setting in a wide shot to obtain a sense of place and the feeling of the whole scene. Additionally, the image could be improved by capturing the life of the area's inhabitants. Another idea is to check local postcard racks as they will instantly give you an idea of the best areas and views. Photographing Family Members and Friends Make sure to capture images of your family or friends on your journey, often we take lots of photos of places and forget to include the special people we went with. An effective way is to strike an even balance between the picture of the destination and the people. To document shared journeys, show the people in the image clearly but also the place to give a clear distinction and context of where the image was captured. By following a few little tips, your photographs could have the potential to trigger memories and other sensations from how moments felt, the smells, tastes and sounds. Lastly, use your photos to create a photo book of your travels while your memories are still fresh; this will help preserve the journey and all the special moments. Don't forget to send us any amazing photos you take in our area, Lindsey.
