You

better believe it! Summer weddings are just weeks away as we recently welcomed the lighter evenings when the clocks sprung forward. I even had my first Aperol Spritz of the year, last weekend! Oh, I adore the summer. My wedding, some nine years ago, was on a sunny Saturday in June and boy did everyone enjoy the bubbles and buckets full of ice-cold beers. The Met Office has reported soaring temps for the months ahead and I for one can’t wait to hear all about your glorious days, admire your flowing gowns and see pics of you and your guests having the time of your lives.

If you’re currently shopping for ‘the one’ do check out our feature dedicated to the amazing boutiques just on our doorstep. Gone are the days of trekking to London, as Essex is where it’s at now. Furthermore, I can’t wait to introduce you to our three real weddings, each bursting with character. I’ll leave you to pore over Dr and Mrs Waterhouse’s day with a slight palaeontologist twist; our beautiful boho bride, Lynsey who married Mark at Channels Estate; and not forgetting Mr and Mrs Liddard who married on New Year’s Eve at Mulberry House.

For further inspiration, check out this issue’s styled shoot taken at Layer Marney Tower which has pure Lord of the Rings vibes. Rich, luxurious, with Celtic tones throughout.

If you’ve recently tied the knot and would like to see your wedding day gracing the pages of An Essex Wedding, please get in touch via our website www.anessex.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding or simply ping me an email!

MARKSHALL ESTATE CANCELS WEDDINGS FROM OCTOBER

Beautiful wedding venue, Markshall Estate, near Coggeshall, will no longer hold weddings from 1st October, according to an official announcement made by the venue. The statement on the Markshall Estate Facebook page read, “We’re very sorry that Markshall has had to make the difficult decision to cease holding weddings from 1st October 2023. As a charity we have to respond to the cultural and economic changes that are happening around us and operate in a way that ensures our long-term future. We understand that this will be very disappointing and upsetting for those affected. We will provide help and support in their search for finding an alternative location or other solution in any way we can. Markshall Visitor Centre, Orchard Kitchen and the Arboretum will remain open. We have recently announced the opening of a new adventure play area and school holiday events called Percy’s Adventures which delivers educational activities and content in an innovative, entertaining way.”

If this has affected your wedding, please contact the Markshall team directly on 01376 565420.

DOWN HALL HOTEL, SPA & ESTATE WINS LARGE HOTEL OF THE YEAR

Down Hall Hotel, Spa & Estate, has won ‘Large Hotel of the Year’ at this year’s East of England Tourism Awards, which champions the very best tourism and hospitality businesses in the region. Held at Milsoms Kesgrave Hall in Ipswich on Thursday 16th March, the awards highlight the incredible work being done in the East of England, and celebrate the people, places, and partnerships that enable the tourism sector to grow.

Down Hall Hotel will now compete with other areas of England at the Visit England Awards for Excellence held later in the year – the most coveted accolade in English tourism.

Linden Beattie, General Manager at Down Hall, comments: “We’re thrilled to have been awarded Large Hotel of the Year at the East of England Tourism Awards. It’s testament to the hard work, commitment and efforts from the team who strive to offer memorable hospitality across 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We’ll continue to invest in the hotel and are currently creating our all-new casual dining space, developing schemes for our next phase of bedroom upgrades, and working hard to achieve higher levels of sustainability across all aspects of the hotel.”

HEDINGHAM CASTLE LAUNCHES THE ROYAL CHAMBER

Hedingham Castle, one of the oldest and best-preserved Norman keeps in Britain, is excited to announce the opening of its new attraction, The Royal Chamber. Visitors can now step back in time and experience the luxurious lifestyle of the medieval English royalty at the castle, with all the conveniences of 21st century living.

Located on the top floor of the 900-year-old Norman Keep, which would have originally been the dormitory floor, The Royal Chamber features a grand four-poster bed, exquisite tapestries, exceptional views and elegant furnishings in the style that would have been used by the lords and ladies of the castle. Modern additions have also been included for the comfort of guests, such as a large bath big enough for two and a cleverly hidden widescreen TV that can be watched from the comfort of the bed.

The bed itself is inspired by the Great Bed of Ware, one of the V&A’s greatest treasures and famously over three metres wide – the only known example of a bed of this size. Hedingham Castle have collaborated with luxury bedding brand, And So To Bed, to deliver an exceptionally comfortable sleeping experience for guests. Featuring a super king Vispring Pure Luxe Hybrid mattress and 400-thread count Palazzo bedding, a peaceful night’s sleep is virtually guaranteed.

“We’re so thrilled to be able to offer our visitors the chance to experience the grandeur of The Royal Chamber,” said Demetra Lindsay, the castle’s owner. “Hedingham Castle has a rich history spanning almost a millenia, and we are always looking for ways to bring it to life for our guests. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sleep like royalty in the only modern bedroom inside a Norman keep in the country. We can’t wait to welcome guests to The Royal Chamber and provide them with an unforgettable experience. The Royal Chamber started as a lockdown project and it has been a complete labour of love to get finished. It brings a significant addition to our offerings and provides an amazing opportunity to explore the castle’s history as well as making it relevant for the modern day.”

RAISING MONEY FOR GOSH

Inspired by an amazing little boy, Isaac, who has sadly spent some time between Broomfield Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), The Bearded Photographers who have met Isaac at multiple weddings, have decided to do their bit to help out and are making a five per cent donation of every new wedding booking to Great Ormond Street Hospital until the end of 2023! Further to this, they’re also making a 20 per cent donation from every print that you purchase through your wedding link! In March they passed over a cheque to GOSH of £3,200. That’s a great achievement.

The Bearded Photographers’ style is very natural, quirky, relaxed and relatable. Do check out their website and their socials to see for yourselves! Congratulations for taking your passion of photography to new levels and making a difference to so many lives.

Visit www.instagram.com/p/CkbLXLJj8oF/

The Royal Chamber is ideal for couples seeking a romantic and unique getaway or for history buffs looking to immerse themselves in the castle’s rich heritage. The room can be booked as a honeymoon retreat for the venue’s wedding couples, as well as being available to book by the public on a Bed & Breakfast or Dinner, Bed & Breakfast basis. Champagne, chocolates and a continental breakfast for two are provided as standard with every booking, and, if also dining, your meal is enjoyed in the form of a five-course tasting menu, served in the breathtaking Banqueting Hall, quite a setting for an intimate dinner for two!

Hedingham Castle is now open for the 2023 season where visitors can explore all the castle’s other attractions, including the 12th century Norman Keep, the Tudor bridge and beautiful gardens. Their extensive events calendar provides a wide variety of options to suit everyone, from medieval jousts and Excalibur events, to outdoor theatre and cinema, folk music nights and murder mystery evenings.

IN HISTORY Steeped

Romantic and eclectic, these venues hold a thousand love stories

BRAXTED PARK

01621 770 855 | https://braxtedparkweddings.co.uk

At the heart of a vast walled estate, you’ll find Braxted Park’s magnificent country house and its stunning gardens. The intimate gardens that connect Braxted House to the grand Wedding Pavilion provide an idyllic setting for any wedding vision. Within the historic Walled Garden guests can enjoy a series of themed ‘rooms’ that include a romantic English Garden, a Knott Garden and an Italian Garden. The year-round interest each provides creates beautiful and varied backdrops for wedding photographs.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE

Combing elegance and romance throughout its interior, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to saying, ‘I do’. The Orangery exudes romance, with Roman-inspired murals and arched windows that look out over the grounds. Alternatively, during the warmer months, tie the knot outdoors at the heart of the walled garden

as your guests soak up the sun. Braxted Park even has its own church, so you could have a religious ceremony just a few minutes away from the house should you wish to. Each option is capable of seating up to 170 guests.

When it comes to receptions, The Pavilion is perfectly equipped for parties both large and small. This versatile space offers plenty of room for up to 350 guests and comes with neutral décor so you can truly make it your own. The in-house catering team are on hand to create some spectacular menus for your special day, while come evening, a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system and huge dancefloor ensures you can enjoy yourselves long into the night.

We love... The Garden Cottage really stands out and offers couples the perfect place to retire to after a day of celebrating, while loved ones can enjoy a relaxing night’s stay just a few steps from the Pavilion, too.

BRIDGE END GARDENS

01799 619 845 | www.saffronwalden.gov.uk

The Walled Garden is surrounded by Victorian gardens. There’s also a hedge maze, rose garden and extensive main lawn area. The gardens are very picturesque with viewing platforms to help you get the most from your photos. There are fountains and sun dials dotted around the gardens. Exclusive hire can be arranged as the gardens can be closed to the public.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE

Bridge End Gardens aren’t licensed for wedding or civil

ceremonies, these can take place in local venues. However, if you wanted a celebrant ceremony to take place in the tipi or marquee, this can be arranged. Ceremonies can easily commence in the local church or Town Hall with guests walking down to the nearby Bridge End Gardens after.

Receptions take place in the Walled Kitchen Garden, where couples can hire either a marquee or tipi.

We love... Over the summer months the smell of perfume that drifts from the rose gardens is a delight to the senses.

It has several rooms across two floors, each boasting their own charm and character and beautiful views across the gardens and parkland. Striking features include the Venetian stained-glass window, dating back to 1810 overlooking the impressive grand staircase. Ornate fireplaces adorn each room, with many of them dating back to when the house was built in 1696.

GOSFIELD HALL

01787 472 914 | www.gosfield-hall.co.uk

Previously a Royal Palace, Gosfield Hall is a stunning stately home which offers a different backdrop around every corner. The south façade boasts sashed windows and a beautiful sun terrace, while the east façade, the main entrance, comprises an imposing red brick frontage and grand triple-height front door. The west entrance, the oldest aspect dating back to Tudor times, offers a picturesque carriageway exclusively for the couple and wedding party, leading to the well-kept courtyard.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE

For your ceremony, make an entrance with the 120ft-long aisle in Queen Charlotte’s oak-panelled gallery. The dual-aspect windows flood the room with light, and the neutral array of silk house flowers completes this space.

Alternatively, the Grand Salon seats 84. The high hand-painted ceiling and double-height sash windows make this a bright and airy space in which to say ‘I do’. The feature fireplace is a beautiful backdrop, and the baby grand piano offers live musical accompaniment.

You can even opt for an outside ceremony. The original carriageway is the licensed setting for this, and you can choose from the inner or outer courtyard setting.

For your reception, The Marquis of Buckingham’s formerBallroom is a breathtakingly stunning setting for fine dining, where guests dine under giant crystal chandeliers and huge double-height mirrors.

We love... There are 23 period bedroom suites, offered exclusively to you for your wedding night, including the Rococo Honeymoon Suite.

ST OSYTH PRIORY

01206 430 160 | www.stosythpriory.co.uk/contact-us

This fantastic manor house is a collection of buildings dating back to 1,100, with the newest addition to the house being Victorian. The ruins of the monastery are a prominent feature and will make the perfect backdrop to any photograph. The abbots tower provides a phenomenal view across the estate.

Darcy house has an abundance of historic attributes, it has been sympathetically restored to complement the wealth of history including original features such as, the stone carvings on the window depicting saints which predate the dissolution of the monastery. The detailed wooden touches across fireplaces, doorways and walls retains the history and the grandeur as it once would have been.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE

For your ceremony, you’re spoilt for choice. There’s Darcy House, where The Gallery and The Great Hall seat up to 110 guests. There’s also the historic chapel which seats up to 60, under the Gatehouse, on the Precinct, and in the Sunken gardens which can host up to 110 guests for a civil ceremony.

There are multiple locations for your drink’s reception, such as The Gallery inside Darcy House or outside in the Rose Gardens, the Sunken gardens, The Knot gardens and the precinct.

We love...

Behind the Priory walls within the 350-acre estate, the gardens and grounds create beautiful scenic memories and impeccable photo opportunities. The gardens are home to natural lakes and a large deer park as well as ancient ruins.

HEDINGHAM CASTLE

01787 460 261 | www.hedinghamcastle.co.uk

Hedingham Castle is set within 120 acres of stunning Essex countryside including the beautifully restored gardens in the immediate area below the Castle – a perfect backdrop for wedding photography. Our favourite spot is the lake, with the Castle behind, or in between the huge Wellingtonia trees at the bottom of the formal pond. The history of Hedingham spans almost a millennium, with the Castle almost 900 years old. Its imposing Norman architecture is iconic and the Castle is a landmark in its own right and can be seen for miles around, standing at over 70ft tall. The majestic Castle is arguably the best preserved Norman Keep of its kind in the country, both inside and out.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE

All ceremonies take place in the Banqueting Hall within the Castle,

with its breathtaking atmosphere and impressive double height arch. The room is lit with candles and two grand chandeliers to give the space the most incredible romance. The acoustics are superb and many choose to have a string quartet play as the bride walks down the aisle.

Receptions can take place in either the elegant Ballroom Marquee, which is a permanent structure adjoining the Mansion House and includes drinks in the Hall of the House and lakeside lawn before dinner. Or, for smaller weddings, you can hold your entire day in the Castle, dining in the Tapestry Room and then continuing the party on the floor above with drinks and dancing.

We love...

Brand new for 2023 is The Royal Chamber - a magnificent honeymoon retreat situated inside the Castle on the top floor, complete with a stunning four poster bed, double bath, breathtaking views and brimming with character. Couples really can sleep like royalty on their wedding night!

THE REST IS

history

Dr and Mrs Waterhouse opted for a traditional wedding, albeit with a slight palaeontological twist, at Talbooth Restaurant in Dedham

Images courtesy of Chloe Lee Photography

Both working at Norfolk Museums Service, romance blossomed amongst the paintings, taxidermy and archaeological artefacts of their surroundings.

David proposed to Alison on a remote beach in North Wales whilst on holiday. The fantastical village of Portmeirion formed the backdrop to the proposal on the deserted beach. Looking back – all the holiday pictures before the proposal David had one hand in his pocket – clutching the precious emerald and diamond engagement ring, just waiting for the perfect moment to pop the question. It was a surprise to Alison – although, being a traditionalist David did of course seek permission to marry Alison from her parents first.

On 14th April 2022, they became Dr and Mrs Waterhouse in a quirky, stylish affair at the Talbooth restaurant in Dedham. Here the happy couple share some of their favourite moments from their big day...

31 REAL WEDDINGS

Alison’s parents regularly attend St John the Baptist Church in Great Clacton. It’s over 900 years old, with a lot of history – something that attracted the history-loving couple!

The reception was chosen because of the excellent food!

Talbooth Restaurant is in beautiful Constable Country and to cap it off, it’s right on the river which meant couple could arrive to meet guests by boat. It was absolutely perfect.

Favours were miniature Welsh love spoons (David is Welsh), Fortnum & Mason ‘Wedding Breakfast’ teabags (their favourite store) and forgetme-not seed packets (for the loved-ones who were absent from the day –including David’s wonderful father Ronald).

Carrying on with the fossil theme, but also bringing in the Essex and Glamorgan county crests, English rose and Welsh daffodil – the table plan was designed and illustrated by David.

The flowers had a vintage look with plenty of green foliage. Forget-menots were also incorporated for absent loved ones, but also because after Alison and David returned home after getting engaged, their front garden was awash with forget-me-nots in full bloom.

32

The bride’s bouquet included special family touches – an anchor charm (something borrowed from the Maid of Honour), attached to the binding in memory of the bride’s grandfather, and pearls wired in amongst the flowers. These pearls were the spares from her grandmother’s pearl necklace that she wore on her wedding day.

The table names were all named after dinosaurs which mean something to David (he is the only British person ever to have been on a Tyrannosaurus rex excavation!).

Following the church service, the bride and groom surprised their guests by arriving at the reception venue by boat which was provided by the River

The bride wore an A-line gown by Victoria Jane from La Belle Angèle Bridalwear, with an illusion neckline and lace and beading to the bodice. The wedding breakfast included guinea fowl and spiced stuffed aubergine, and evening food included a variety of hot and cold small dishes. Stour Trust The cake was made by Alison and stacked the morning of the wedding! It was white chocolate and passionfruit with edible goldleaf with flowers provided by Butterfly Flowers of St Osyth.
REAL WEDDINGS 33

The shoes included lace and green stones to match the detailing of the dress and jewellery. The heels included pressed dried forget-me-nots and a key feature was small pieces of real crocheted wool and miniature crochet hooks to reflect Alison’s love of crafting and the wedding centrepieces.

David wore a traditional morning suit with black silk polished top hat, dove grey waistcoat, dove grey gloves, double pocket-watch chain and silver paisley silk tie (with pearl tie pin). At David’s parents’ ’70s wedding, the groom and groomsmen wore paisley silk ties and the tie was a nod towards this.

The bridesmaids wore fresh sea-green fulllength dresses with a similar floaty-style to the bride’s gown.

The groomsmen all wore traditional morning suits, black tailcoat and grey striped trousers.

“Everything came together to make a perfect day. All of the speeches were special and reflected the people we love the most and all that we’ve shared together.”

Evening entertainment came with the DJs – Fox and Braces. Guests were able to make requests for a favourite song with their RSVP so the evening included a whole mix of music that everyone enjoyed.

RINGING IN THE

new year

Starting 2023 with a celebration like no other, Mr and Mrs Liddard married on New Year’s Eve at Mulberry House

Images courtesy of Hayley Jayne Photography

36

Thehappy couple were in London celebrating Jessica’s birthday the night Ross proposed. Following a meal, the pair grabbed an Uber back to the hotel. However, due to traffic, or so Jessica thought, the Uber stopped and let them out just by Tower Bridge. Jessica explains, “I was freezing cold and said ‘no!’ but Ross got out. I’d worked in the city for 10 years and never witnessed Tower Bridge open, but at midnight on the 12th September 2021 there we were, on our own, with the bridge opening. It was purely beautiful, a few people gathered and once it reopened the crowds moved on, and it left just Ross and I. We took a picture and strolled over hand in hand and came to the quiet gardens surrounding the Tower of London, the heart of where we’d worked together and had our first date. Ross stopped and got down on one knee, of course I said yes and cried my eyes out.” Goosebumps anyone? How romantic.

On New Year’s Eve 2022, the pair said their I dos in front of loved ones at Mulberry House.

Here, Jessica tells us more about their day…

SETTING THE SCENE

Mulberry House was the only venue Jessica and Ross viewed, wanting a beautiful venue capable of hosting their big family so no one had to worry about driving. Following Christmas, Mulberry House was decorated elegantly with festive decorations, which fitted perfectly with the pair’s monochrome theme with a touch of silver.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

As it was a winter wedding, Jessica chose a gown with full sleeves from Confetti and Lace. With plenty of embellishment and a flowing train, her hair in soft waves, she exuded style and sophistication. Ross and the groomsmen wowed in simple, black tux. However, Jess recalls one certain dilemma on the day, “The morning of the wedding the younger boys put their shirts on (Ross’s only job was to buy them as they weren’t in stock when I tried them on in the shop). Unfortunately, Ross didn’t read the package and he’d bought short sleeved versions! So, on the morning of his wedding, Ross was dragging our three boys around Marks and Spencer buying long sleeved school shirts!”

TIME TO CELEBRATE

Jessica and Ross hired a singer to entertain throughout the meal which everyone enjoyed. As it was NYE, everyone was very ready to party and get on the dancefloor.

Jessica recalls, “The best thing we did for our wedding was hiring soft play – it was set up at the back of the marquee, so whilst all the adults ate (and drunk!) all the kids played – they had mini cars they would drive around in which was brilliant and made everyone happy!”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

Jessica and Ross were so happy with their day and their wonderful photographer, Hayley. Jessica advises, “If you can, book a package, it takes away so much stress as everything is already sorted. Secondly, use Hayley as your photographer as she was more like a friend than a photographer and we were able to say yes or no to what we wanted. She really delivered on all the photos we were after.”

Alockdown engagement. One sunny morning the pair drove to Brighton for a walk with their dog, Gatsby. Mark took Lynsey by surprise and popped the question. The answer was yes, and the pair got stuck into planning their big day!

Lynsey and Mark Mc Hugh married at Channels Estate on 1st September 2022 in a boho styled affair! Here, Lynsey tells us more about their day...

43 REAL WEDDINGS

We loved that Channels had a beautiful garden ceremony area as well as a lovely barn for the wedding breakfast.

Channels also had Guinness on tap which was a must for Mark being from Ireland!

I picked a dress by Lovers Society called the Niko gown. I chose this style because it was quite boho with subtle lace design. I wore plain white sandal heels and decided not to wear a veil as I didn’t want to cover the lace detail on the back of the dress!

The groom wore a burgundy suit from Anthony Formal Wear, his navy tie matched the groomsmen’s suits.

The groomsmen wore navy suits with a burgundy tie to match Mark’s suit. The best man and father of the bride also wore a burgundy waistcoat to make them stand out.
44

The bridesmaids wore white multi style dresses from La Closet De Chanel, they were made to order and could be worn whichever way the girls felt most comfortable.

On the day we felt overwhelmed but it was so special. It’s such a lovely feeling having a day that’s just celebrating you as a couple.

Our dog Gatsby barked when they asked if anyone had any reason we should not be married during the ceremony, this made everyone laugh!

Harrison Events have the most lovely rustic decorations. The table plans were placed in pots with fresh gypsophila.

Our centrepieces were jars of fresh gypsophila with rustic wooden table numbers.

My bouquet, the bridesmaid’s bouquets and men’s flower pins were all dried flowers

We also ordered fresh flower hat boxes for our mums which were from Dilly’s Bespoke Florist in Maldon.

45 REAL WEDDINGS

Our rustic themed cake was adorned with dried flowers but each layer was a different flavour.

Harrison Events decorated our ceremony area. They also placed dried flower arrangements around the venue.

We had a live band called the Penny Kings. They learnt our first dance song for us which was You’re My Best Friend by Queen.

We had giant wooden LOVE letters on the dancefloor and a wooden photo booth with props

We had a wedding breakfast followed by hog roast in the evening.

TOP TIP!

When planning, do what makes you both happy! It’s your day to enjoy. Take in every moment because it goes by too quickly.

What made our day extra special was having all of the people we love and care about in one place, we had family and friends come from Ireland, UK, Australia, Italy and Norway.

organiser and hair stylist on the day, Lisa Curtis had a vision to create a Celtic styled shoot in the historical setting, Layer marney Tower. She explains, “My inspiration came from Galadriel in Lord of the Rings, from the loosely waved hairstyle to the floaty sleeved dress and draped cape. A lot of brides are having themes for their wedding day, I wanted to inspire those brides who would opt for a castle or historical setting by creating a medieval feel. I opted for the staircase greenery, candles and the

soft hues of the bouquet to deliver a dramatic feel to this shoot.”

Lisa worked alongside her daughter, Ella Curtis, who planned and prepared the mood board. Lisa adds, “The hair was created by using chopsticks and a heat tool, I didn’t want to create a modern-day curl as back in medieval times it wouldn’t be possible to curl hair that way and I wanted an authentic look. The hair was then accessorised with bespoke handmade jewellery from What Katy Did Next.”

A LOVE LETTER TO YOUR SKIN

I recently attended a masterclass with Super Facialist’s resident skincare expert, Charlotte Connoley, which posed the question: do we really know our skin type? If like me your answer is somewhat hesitant, it may interest you to know that there’s an easy way to find out. Charlotte suggests simply splashing your face with water and leaving it for 20-25 minutes. If it feels prickly afterwards, you have sensitive skin; if the water’s gone, then it’s dry; if the skin is tight, it’s dehydrated; and if it feels perfectly comfortable you’re blessed with a normal skin type. Whatever you discover, Super Facialist has a range of products specifically tailored to each type, recognising this can change throughout the year. This allows you to affordably create your own individual skincare routine to support your skin throughout the seasons.

Having learned that my skin is dehydrated, I tried the divine Rosehip Hydrate Calming Creamy Cleanser (£9, www.lookfantastic.com) and my annoying dry patches have been banished!

BEAUTY NEWS 75

SKIN DEEP

Beauty editor Kelly Andrews caught up with Angela Langford whose eponymous brand offers a wide range of skincare designed to make you feel great

The idea for Angela Langford as a brand started when Angela was working in a stressful, pressured, corporate job in Gibraltar, from which she was eventually made redundant. She knew she wasn’t meant for that world any longer, and set out to create her own business based on her passions. “I was travelling less, which meant I couldn’t easily get my favourite skincare from the UK anymore,” Angela says. “So, I started making my own products for personal use, with no intention of turning it into a career.” But, having discovered a love for the whole process, she did a lot of research and eventually decided to turn her new-found passion into a business, sharing her products with others. She went on to study cosmetic formulation in depth, which in turn opened up a completely new world for her.

Beauty editor Kelly Andrews chatted to Angela recently to find out more about the brand and its products, as well as how they can help you feel skin confident for your wedding day, complete with that gorgeous bridal glow.

possible I use glass jars and bottles, but this isn’t always compatible with the product. If a container is plastic, I use post-consumer recycled packaging. This is an area I work hard to constantly improve on, and over the years, I’ve made a great deal of progress.

Using high quality, concentrated products can help too, because you don’t need to purchase so often. Keeping your routine simple and using up what you do buy can also help.

What are your favourite skincare ingredients that you recommend we look out for?

This is a bit like being asked who your favourite child is, or in my case, favourite pet! It’s a tough one to answer, but I think oils rich in skin-loving omegas and essential fatty acids are vital for our skin’s health. Rosehip, chia seed, argan, and evening primrose are in a lot of my products and I always try to source organic versions.

I’m a huge fan of active plant ingredients too. My current favourites are electric daisy and sea buckthorn. The former has been referred to as nature’s botox and can help to smooth, firm and tighten our skin; whereas sea buckthorn is like a superfood for it. It has so many amazing benefits –it’s calming, soothing, repairing and can help with cell regeneration. Rich in vitamin C and anti-oxidants, it’s a skincare powerhouse, which is why I use it in my best-selling face oil, Bloom & Glow.

People are becoming more conscious of what’s in their skincare products as well as how its produced. How can we ensure our beauty products are as harmless to the environment as they are good for our skin?

I’m a very small-scale producer and I make everything myself in small batches. This means, there’s very little wastage and the products aren’t stored for months on end in a warehouse. I also use organic ingredients wherever available as these are also better for the environment.

We’re primarily an online brand, so I don’t use any outer packaging, and this small change can help to make a positive difference. Where

What would you recommend as the best approach for a bride or groom concerned about sensitive skin in the run up to the big day? Don’t introduce a new product to your skincare routine too close to your big day. Also, avoid any treatments or introducing new make-up. If you have regular facials, that’s fine, but going for something different a week beforehand may upset your skin. If you’re having your make-up applied by a professional, make sure you discuss this with them during your trial and ask to use your own make-up products if you’re worried.

Can you suggest a skincare regime that will ensure skin is in tip-top condition, providing the perfect base for a W-day make-up artist? Cleanse every morning and evening. A double cleanse with a balm or

“My aim is to make people feel great about their skin no matter their age. When we feel good about our skin, we feel better about ourselves in general, so my goal is just that – to help you feel great.”
Angela Langford
76

oil in the evening is great too. The first will remove the make-up and SPF, the second is to cleanse the skin. Unless you’re very sensitive or have rosacea, I’d recommend using an exfoliator twice a week too in the evening after cleansing. Look for something with fruit acids (AHAs), which help to slough away dead, dull skin.

A once-a-week brightening face mask will really help to liven up your complexion and even out skintone. As long as you introduce them a few months in advance of your wedding, a mask the night before is wonderful. It will help to soften and smooth your skin ready for flawless make-up application and it’ll help you to relax too. Also, be sure to moisturise daily, keep skin hydrated with a tonic, and by drinking plenty of water.

Finally, if there’s one thing I think can make an enormous difference, it’s using a face oil. Even if your skin is oily, it can really help and there’s one out there for everyone. Brightening and balancing versions are wonderful, and you can use a drop after your make-up has been applied for extra luminosity.

What would you suggest to those worried about congested or oily skin and the effect this will have on their overall make-up look?

I always come back to cleansing as the key to great skin, yet it’s often the step people either skip entirely or skimp on. Cleansing wipes are a real no-no for me, they just move dirt around your skin and don’t cleanse properly. They aren’t great for the environment either, so I’d really avoid these.

The other important thing, particularly when you have oily skin, is to choose balancing products. Often, those aimed at this particular skin type are harsh and strip skin of its natural oils. This doesn’t solve the problem though, in fact it has the opposite effect, making your skin panic into producing even more oil.

It may surprise you to know that oil isn’t the enemy, being oil-free can be though. I even advise people with oily skin to use a facial oil in the evening. It can take time to get used to, and might take longer to even consider, as it does sound counter-intuitive! The key is to use the right

ones – light, easily absorbed and balancing are what you need. Look for ingredients including rosehip, kiwi, thistle (also known as safflower) and jojoba, all great for oily, congested and combination skin. Massage a couple of drops into clean skin every night. Plus, if you aren’t sensitive to them, essential oils can also help to clear congested skin. Look out for palamarosa, cypress, bergamot, lemon, lemongrass and rose geranium.

When is the best time to make changes/improvements to a skincare regime in preparation for a wedding?

It can take time for our skin to adjust to new products and new ingredients. When you try something new, it’s not unusual for your skin to become dry or for you to experience a little redness or even breakouts. This is just our skin adjusting. It does depend on the individual and also what products your skin is used to, but to be safe, I’d give yourself at least two months to introduce changes and new products. This also leaves time for you to see the results.

What products couldn’t you live without?

I use either Clean Sweep Cleansing Balm, and I Can See Clearly Now Make-up Remover. I then follow with a second cleanse using Sweet Cheeks Non-Foaming Face Wash. I exfoliate a few times a week using Scrub Up Exfoliator and use Look on the Bright Side Face Mask once a week – mixing it with some Freshen Up and a few drops of Bloom & Glow. In the day I’m never far away from a bottle of Freshen Up Hydrating Skin Tonic – I love to use it when my skin needs a hydrating boost. Most of the time I use A Little Lift Serum followed by Bloom & Glow face oil in the day and at night Bloom & Glow or Repair & Renew face oil on its own – I just love face oils and the benefits they have on our skin.

INTERVIEW 77

WhenI met with celebrity hairstylist and OGX ambassador, Michael Douglas to mark the launch of OGX’s new Colour Retention range, I can say with confidence that I was definitely having colour retention problems. I’d recently taken the plunge with my dream pastel violet hair colour, but my beloved shade was quickly running away from me. Michael very kindly offered to top my colour up, and while he mixed together a stunning new violet for me, I asked him about OGX’s new range. “All of the brand’s products are PH-balanced with sulphate-free surfactants, which don’t bind to anything you don’t want them to meaning they’re all very gentle on colour,” he told me.

I’m sure we can all agree that there’s not much better than that fresh-from-the-salon feeling, which is why OGX created the new collection, to extend salon or at home colour for up to four weeks. The new products also contain a colour bond plex technology, which helps to protect and strengthen strands for healthylooking, vibrant hair.

With the gorgeous colour applied, Michael began to style my short crop and I was curious whether he had any advice for brides-to-be

Brighten up YOUR LIFE

Beauty editor Kelly Andrews met up with celebrity hair stylist Michael Douglas to find out about OGX’s new Colour Retention range

the brush moving. Most of the answers to hair problems are actually in styling products. OGX do a heat protection spay that I use all the time as a blow-dry spray, along with the fantastic Air Dry Cream, it’s brilliant.”

thinking about colouring their locks prewedding. He said, “It’s so high risk isn’t it? Do not do anything experimental, that’s the main thing! A lot of people seem to want to look like someone else on their wedding day, but I always think it’s better to look like the best, sexiest version of you – make you look great that day!

“Unless you wear your hair up a lot though, I never think it’s such a good idea. Remember, photos are forever. My favourite look was when Jennifer Aniston married Brad Pitt. She had great hair, everyone knew her for her that. So, actually she just had it down with some little diamonds sewn into it on a thin thread, which pinned it really nicely. I’ve tried the technique myself with a thin fishing wire woven through the hair before a blow dry and it just supports the style beautifully.”

Michael continued, “I also like the idea of doing something for the day and changing it up for the evening.” I was totally on board with this, having noticed an increasing trend in brides pulling off an outfit switch-up between the ‘I dos’ and celebrations. Michael suggested: “There‘s something nice about having the hair scraped back for the morning and then something a wavy in the evening or vice versa.”

By now, I was delighted with my own hair and wanted to know more about achieving the same look at home. After all, we can’t all have a celebrity hair stylist on call! He said, “A lot of people want frizz-free shiny hair and ask me on Instagram what shampoo and conditioner they need to buy, but it’s actually down to styling technique. Use a decent bristle brush with a metal barrel, hold the dryer at a particular angle for a long time, about four seconds longer than you think you need to, and keep

So, how did you come to work with OGX as it’s brand ambassador? I asked. “During lockdown when all the hairdressers shut down, I decided to go on social media and talk about the best consumer products to use at home. I was getting around 4,000 people a day watching the lives, so a lot of brands got in touch asking me to talk about their products and OGX offered to send me some of its range. When I realised that most of my audience aren’t going to be spending £20 on a bottle of shampoo, yet were the very people asking for help, I agreed to try them. When I saw the huge range of products all PH balanced and with sulphate-free surfactants, at £6.99-£7.99 a bottle, it peaked my interest. I was able to send hundreds of OGX goodies out to my followers, and you wouldn’t believe the amount of people who came back to me saying how much they loved them. We shot 45 one-minute videos for OGX looking at common hair problems with the products to solve them. It’s a great match!”

I left the studio with a spring in my step confirming that indeed, it is difficult to beat the feeling of a fresh new do!

KEEP CALM AND MARRY ON

Professional nutritionists from Wedding Wellness share their stress-beating tips

Feeling the pressure to get everything right and done on time is inevitable when it comes to wedding planning. With a seemingly endless todo list and preparing to expect the unexpected, the sense of overwhelm can quickly take over. This, in turn, results in its own issues such as impaired sleep, digestive issues, skin breakouts, low mood and anxiety. While it isn’t helpful to tell someone planning their big day to simply not stress, thinking about ways to support a stressed body and maintain overall good health, can help prevent some of these unwanted symptoms and make the whole process more manageable.

Read on to discover five ways to support yourself against stress in the run up to your wedding day, courtesy of Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews at Wedding Wellness...

PRIORITISE SLEEP

One of the most underrated activities when it comes to your health is a good night’s sleep. Quality sleep isn’t purely about how many hours of shut-eye you get, but also about being mindful of eating and lifestyle habits, and how they can affect rest. When we consistently sleep well, our brains and bodies are more resilient, making us better at healing, fighting infection, concentrating and making decisions.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the run up to bed time, as both disrupt the brain’s natural restorative activity and block deep sleep, which is key to optimal health.

MAKE TIME FOR MOVEMENT

Exercise is great for physical health but

movement is just as important for our mental health, and ability to handle stress. Our bodies react to stress in the same way they might if encountering a bear in the wilderness! Allowing them the chance to move and release the build up of tension that comes from being in a stressful state, helps them to calm down and return to a state of normal. Movement in any shape or form also encourages deep or mindful breathing, which is another brilliant way of reducing stress and calming the mind and body. Aim for at least 20-30 minutes of your movement of choice per day.

EAT FOODS THAT HELP TO LOWER INFLAMMATION

The reason stress is so harmful is that it causes damage to the body known as oxidative stress. This can result in aches and pains, slow healing and a higher chance of catching a cold. Eating foods that help reduce this damage, are commonly referred to as antiinflammatory, as they promote healing and calm the stress response, aiding everything from gut and hormonal health to improving mood. Some of the best anti-inflammatory foods to include in your meals are: berries, ginger, garlic, dark green leafy vegetables, oily fish, nuts and seeds, avocado and wholegrains.

TAKE REGULAR BREAKS

When you have an endless to-do list, it’s easy to assume every spare moment should be used to work through as much of it as possible. Taking

proper breaks and using that time to actually relax, will calm your otherwise overworked nervous system and help your body return to a rested state. Use those moments to distract yourself with something calming, such as music, conversation or a proper lunch break away from a screen. Not only will this help reduce how stressed you feel, you will digest meals better and feel less fatigued too.

EAT REGULAR, WHOLESOME MEALS

It might sound obvious, but one of the best things you can do for your health is to eat wholesome, balanced meals at a regular time each day. The body loves habit and thrives on routine, so regular meals will help nourish and support a stressed body. Making sure you’re eating foods that include complex carbs will help you maintain energy, support normal body function and improve general health. Look for wholegrains and vegetables; protein like fish, chicken, beans and pulses; and healthy fats such as oily fish, nuts, seeds, avocado and olive oil.

Our local experts answer your hair and beauty questions

THE POWER PONY!

I’d love a funky on-trend ponytail for my wedding day. I’m worried my hair is too fine. Can anyone achieve this look?

I absolutely love creating ponytails, particularly my glam wave versions! They are such a beautiful, modern style that can be achieved on most hair lengths and suit every hair colour. I love adding shine spray to make them glisten as they swoosh down the aisle! If your hair is naturally quite fine in texture, then of course it’s still possible for you to have the power pony! With hair, most styles are achievable, it may just be that a little helping hand is needed to create the final, desired look. For the pony, it’s the volume created that gives that real WOW factor, so with finer hair, we’d just need to discuss the use of hair extensions to achieve this. Anything is possible, so if you really love a style but aren’t sure if your hair is suitable, speak to your bridal hair stylist who will discuss all options for you to make your dream wedding hair a reality.

GOLDEN GLOW

I’m looking to pamper myself before the big day, what treatment would best be suited to me?

I’d recommend a good antiaging facial for that red carpet glow. At Glass House Retreat, I recommend the O2 Lift facial as it provides an amazing sheen to the skin ready for the big day! This particular facial starts with a peel that’s applied to the face and uses oxygen, plantderived stem cells, peptides and specially concentrated enzymatic botanicals to remove any dead cells.

A TRIP OF A LIFETIME

My wife-to-be and I are looking for a wow-factor honeymoon destination with lots of fun activities. Do you have any suggestions?

My wow-factor honeymoon suggestion would be Zanzibar for a two-part honeymoon, filled with action, culture, adventure and pure unadulterated relaxation! Set off the eastern coast of Africa and made up of 40 islands, it offers the perfect mix!

You could start with a safari in the Serengeti or take a trek up Kilimanjaro. Zanzibar is nicknamed ‘Spice Island’, famous for its vanilla, nutmeg, clove and cardamom plantations. Why not take a tour around one and learn how they are produced? Soak up Swahili culture and wander around Stone Town, the capital of the Zanzibar archipelago.

Safari Blue is an incredible boat trip experience, where guests can swim with dolphins, snorkel around the coral reefs and a fresh seafood buffet consisting of lobster, fish and calamari. The trips don’t end there, later take a canoe ride out to explore the mangroves, see ancient baobab trees and soak up the Zanzibar sunsets.

There are an abundance of fun activities to do including cycling the circumference of an island if you’re feeling energetic such as kitesurfing, yoga retreats and full moon parties.

Zanzibar is home to some world class beaches, incredible sunsets, crystal calm waters and pure white sandy beaches. The perfect mix of adventure and relaxation all rolled into one!

IT’S CHILDSPLAY

We’re having lots of children at our wedding and want something that will keep them entertained. What do you suggest?

How to keep the kids entertained is always a bit of a worry at weddings, particularly during speeches and the drinks reception but it doesn’t need to be! Ensure your venue has ample space indoors for children’s entertainers, soft play and magicians. Here at The Lawn, we’re also blessed with three acres of stunning private gardens, set within 120 acres with no roads nearby to worry about, to explore and to host outdoor activities. We regularly see bouncy castles and other inflatables (which we find aren’t just fun for the kids!), wedding themed crazy golf, garden games such as croquet, Connect 4 and Giant Jenga, alpacas for the kids to pet, bucking broncos, ice cream trikes, kid’s archery and even a badminton net.

GREEN WITH ENVY

I want my wedding to look very fresh with loads of foliage everywhere (but not necessarily flowers). What suggestions do you have?

Lots of different foliage can give a wedding visual impact. Because foliage comes in a many different tones and shades of green it creates depth. Popular greens include eucalyptus, olive, soft ruscus and pistache which give good coverage but also adds texture to the designs. Jasmine tendrils and ivy look amazing trailing from a bouquet, a table decoration or a larger installation such as arches, moongates and garlands to beams. These blank areas at the wedding venue can be filled with fabulousness and will soften hard lines. Use of ferns, soft and wispy, are great for a whimical, meadow like wedding giving a wild and wonderful aura. Greenery functions like a neutral tone which allows working with a wide variety of colour schemes easy. Foliage can give any wedding the wow factor without any flowers used!

FIT & FLARE

My fiancé is much taller than me – what dress style would you recommend for a shorter bride to give the illusion of height? A fit and flare gown works so well to give the illusion of height as the flare from below the hips will give the elongated and striking silhouette! Tasha from Luna Novias, as pictured, has a detailed bodice and soft train to give the further illusion from the back.

SNAP HAPPY

We’re clueless when it comes to photography. Is there a list of shots we should ask our photographer to capture?

Yes, there are several shots that you can ask your photographer to try to capture to ensure that all the moments and details that are important to you are captured. Many photographers including myself may use a prewedding questionnaire which gives you the opportunity to request which moments, details or portraits are important to you, but if a photographer doesn’t provide a questionnaire, then definitely give them a list, here are a few examples:

1. Getting ready shots: Ask your photographer to capture candid shots of you and your wedding party getting ready, including putting on make-up, getting dressed, and adjusting accessories.

2. Reactions: If there’s a particular reaction you’re looking forward to, like a family member seeing you in your dress for the first time or a response by someone opening a gift, make sure to let your photographer know where and when this will be happening so they can capture it.

3. Ceremony shots: Make sure your photographer can capture important moments during your ceremony, including exchanging vows and rings and your first kiss as a married couple, and check if there are any restrictions regarding photography beforehand that would prevent your photographer from being able to get these moments. If you’re planning anything different, like having a pet carry the rings or a confetti throw exit when walking back down the aisle, let your photographer know beforehand so they’re ready.

4. Group shots: Many photographers have a standard list of group shots they usually take that work within your timeline. Speak to your photographer beforehand and determine how many group photos you can squeeze in within your allocated time, always starting with the most to least important in case you run out of time.

5. Reception shots: Ask your photographer to capture candid photos of

your guests enjoying the reception, as well as critical moments like the first dance, toasts, and cake cutting.

By providing your photographer with a list of shots you want, you can be assured that your special day will be captured in a way you will cherish forever.

When choosing a photographer, it’s a good idea to ask to view a full gallery from a recent wedding, just so you can see what kind of photos they usually take on a typical wedding day.

It’s also worth thinking about the kind of photos you don’t like, such as: ‘I don’t like the idea of cheesy poses or fake smiles’; or ‘I’m not worried about having any photos of the food or my shoes’. This will ensure your photographer need not waste any precious time taking photos that have no interest to you.

Watch this space

The experts at WatchPilot advise on how to choose the perfect watch for your big day

Awatch should complement a groom’s suit, however it should also be a timepiece that they will want to wear for years to come. Co-founder of WatchPilot.com, Tim Harrison, has shared with County Wedding Magazines’ grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, his expert advice on buying and investing in a timepiece for your big day...

What type of watches are available for grooms-to-be?

The most common watches are quartz, which offer accurate timing with minimal maintenance. Quartz watches also have the most affordable watch movements.

Then there are automatic watches which selfwind using kinetic energy. These store energy by using the movement of your wrist but are typically more expensive than quartz options.

Mechanical watches function via an intricate series of tiny components working together to power the watch. These never need batteries because they require hand-winding to operate. They are super reliable and often very attractive to look at but they do come with a higher price tag than other timepieces.

The final type is the solar watch, which has the ability to convert light energy into electrical energy; they do not require battery replacements and feature a quartz crystal movement for accurate timekeeping.

What are the latest watch trends?

Watches mean so much more than just telling the time; they represent every second of our lives. Some of the most recent style trends include vintage watches with nostalgic elements such as thin cases, minimalistic dials and those with beautiful heritage.

Smart watches are continuing to be a big

trend as people are increasingly investing more in their health and wellbeing, and these timepieces are the best for staying in tune with your body while you meet your fitness goals.

There has also been a huge increase in using bold colours in both jewellery and watches. Blue, green and other pastel colours have been particularly utilised by many brands, producing a variety of new lines and limitededition pieces.

How can grooms-to-be add a personal touch to their wristwear?

A wedding is a great opportunity to add a sentimental item or two to your wardrobe. Potentially borrow a watch from a family member or someone very close to you. If you are wearing a new watch, consider having it engraved to provide a memory of your special day – this could be a date, initials or a quote.

Appearance is one of the largest factors for grooms when choosing what to wear on their big day, with this in mind, what are your tips for grooms-to-be when selecting a watch to complement their suit?

The most common watch worn with a suit is the dress watch. Consider a simple design with no flourishes. A plain black leather strap and simple dial is understated and refined.

When gifting a watch to a groom, what details should be considered?

Opt for a classic and elegant design. Much like an engagement ring, the watch should stand out, however not be too extravagant. Consider taste and style preferences for example, if he’s sporty look for a classic chronograph.

If you know what colour metal the groom prefers to wear as part of his wardrobe i.e. on belt buckles or cufflinks, then this could be a hint for the colour of watch they may like.

Lastly stay within your budget! Don’t forget that weddings can cost quite a bit of money, so set yourself a price limit and work within it.

How do you suggest cleaning and maintaining a watch?

Whether you wear it every day or just for special occasions, it’s important to make time to give your watch a bit of TLC with a regular clean. This not only keeps it looking good, but it’s also essential for making sure it works well,

keeps time effectively over a long period as well as for general hygiene.

How often you should clean your watch varies. If you wear your watch every day, then a thorough clean, once a month, should keep it free of dirt and grime. If you’re more of an occasional wearer, then a six-monthly deep clean is recommended.

The first step is to take a look at the manual that came with your watch. This should give you a good idea of what you can and can’t do during the cleaning process. Next, you’ll need the proper equipment. A few essential items that will help you give your watch a thorough clean include a microfibre cloth, cleaning fluid, brushes, a watch strap remover tool and a Cape Cod polishing cloth.

If your watch strap is made from leather, fabric or silicone, you’ll need to remove it before you can start cleaning. You’ll also need to push or screw in all the crowns (the winders) and buttons to prevent water or moisture from damaging the internal workings of your watch.

There are some parts of your watch, like the crown and buttons, that might be too small to effectively clean with your cloth, and this is where your cleaning brushes come in. They’re perfect for getting into all the nooks and crannies, including the crown, buttons and inside the lugs. Always spray the cleaning fluid onto the tip of each brush, not the watch itself, and use a dry part of your microfibre cloth to remove any excess.

Now it’s time to buff or polish your watch using your Cape Cod polishing cloth. Not only will this remove any streaks and brighten up the surface of your watch, but it’s also a great way to buff out any fine scratches or blemishes.

HONEYMOON NEWS 91

OF LOVEThe city

Aftera speedy trip on the Eurostar and a leisurely stroll, we arrived at the Shangri-La Paris. With all that Paris has to offer, the actual accommodation you find yourself using can often feel like an afterthought. However, with the history and majesty of the Shangri-La Paris, the hotel is as much a tourist destination as the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe or even the Eiffel Tower. A former home of Prince Roland Bonaparte, overlooking the River Seine, the hotel is centrally located in the 16th arrondissement and seamlessly blends European grandeur with traditional Asian hospitality.

FIT FOR ROYALTY

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a welcoming member of the hotel concierge who checked in our bags while we were given a guided tour. The building is a stunning feat of architecture and the location alone is enough to take your breath away. The hotel has plenty of stand-out features (too many to mention), but the impressive marble-lined swimming pool converted from the former stables, the relaxing spa, state-of-the-art health club and stunning entrance hall are all must-sees.

If you want to relax with a drink in your hand, then you’ll feel right at home in the stunningly decorated Le Bar Botaniste or Les Lounges, both of which offer a friendly and impressive service.

SUITE DREAMS

Catching our breath for a moment, we were shown to our suite. In all honesty, the view of the Eiffel Tower a few hundred feet away, in plain sight of our room, made it very hard to focus on the suite itself for a good few minutes! But after wiping the stardust from our eyes, we discovered that we had been treated to a magnificent space. The biggest bed I’d ever seen, a walk-in wardrobe and a lavish bathroom greeted us; with every aspect of the room designed around that view. The attention to detail was beyond anything I could have imagined with every amenity you could possibly need at your fingertips.

One of my favourite aspects was the balcony, which showed the tower in all its splendour and views of the city at every turn. Sitting there with a cup of tea and homemade macarons was one of the highlights of the trip, and I opted to be out on the balcony every spare moment I had.

EAST MEETS WEST

There are two restaurants at Shangri-La Paris, both of which are beautifully decorated with stand-out food. Shang Palace, where I had the pleasure of dining, is France’s only Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant and what a treat it was! Inspired by Southeast China’s culinary traditions, the restaurant offers authentic Chinese cuisine by chef Samuel Lee.

With so much choice, we were a little lost for words, but thankfully the charming hostess was very helpful and suggested options that she felt we would enjoy.

Every dish was incredible and the food complemented the surroundings perfectly. We started with the chef’s special sashimi; immaculately prepared, it set the standard for what was to follow. The lobster dumplings were a particular favourite of mine and is something I’d eat every day if possible. After several dishes, it was safe to say I was stuffed, but when the dessert arrived, I couldn’t help myself; the rice balls with mixed fruits and whipped cream was delicious and one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime meal, then this is it. It’s been months since we visited, but we still talk about how delicious everything was.

TRUE ROMANCE

With such awe-inspiring surroundings, we couldn’t resist a short stroll over to the Trocadéro and across the Seine to the Eiffel Tower. As beautiful a sight at night as during the day, we couldn’t believe our fortune.

When we eventually headed back to the hotel, we wearily made our way up to our bedroom. The suite had an impressive TV, but it almost felt like a redundancy next to the view from the windows. I’m typically a blackout sleeper, but on this occasion, I had to sleep with the curtains wide open.

After a wonderful night’s sleep, we ordered breakfast to our room and enjoyed it out on our balcony terrace. Barely noticing the brisk February weather, we dined in what felt like the historic heart of Paris. Breakfast was up to the high standards we’d come to expect from the Shangri-La Paris, and when it came to checking out, we felt devastated to be leaving.

I can say with absolute certainty that we left with our chi restored and look forward to returning in the near future!

Melissa Cullen reveals why Paris is the perfect honeymoon destination
92

For our second evening in Paris, we had the fortune of being hosted by the Hôtel Dame des Arts. Just a stone’s throw from Notre-Dame, it’s located in the Latin Quarte, which is considered the artistic heart of Paris. The hotel boasts terrace rooms looking out to the Eiffel Tower, a spacious and luxurious rooftop bar, and a charming secret garden courtyard – a gem in the centre of a bustling, metropolitan area.

Entering through a sleek, sliding door, we felt like we’d been invited into an ultra-secretive club. The hotel’s lobby, with its dark motif, stylish sofas and low lighting simultaneously blended Art Deco architecture with the feel of a futuristic nightclub. After checking in, we were shown up to our room, which continued the theme exhibited in the lobby. The architectural vision of the hotel is singular, drawing you completely into the world the owners have created.

SLEEK AND SOPHISTICATED

Our room was the natural extension of the hotel; with all the amenities any couple could desire. Every aspect had been well thought out and cleverly made use of the space available. A sliding, frosted-glass door separated the bedroom from the bathroom area, and the use of lighting and sleek, curved panelling made us feel like we were on the set of a high-budget movie. Our room even had a terrace looking out to the Eiffel Tower, bringing us back into the heart of Paris.

DRINK IT ALL IN

After dropping off our bags, we were given a guided tour of the hotel. The beautifully arranged restaurant and bar giving way through an impressive door to a stunning garden space. A mix of comfortable furniture and grounding flora, the tranquillity of the area makes you forget being mere feet away from the busy streets surrounding the hotel – a true feat. Our next stop was the hotel’s gym. The curved, wooden panelling enveloping the walls of the room is really a sight to behold. The final stop of our tour was the building’s rooftop terrace, and I assure you, our guide had saved the best for last. The terrace looks out in every direction across Paris, choosing a seating location is an almost impossible task!

Major sightseer locations such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame and the Panthéon are all visible from the terrace; with stunning pieces of Parisian history everywhere you look. I can imagine sitting at the bar on a summer’s evening watching the sun go down over one of the most beautiful cities in the world being a truly transformative experience.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Once our tour had ended, we made our way down to the restaurant for dinner. Starting with a cocktail in hand, the space had a buzzing atmosphere and was full of people laughing and enjoying the splendour. My hubby and I ordered the corn ribs with magic mayo and cotija cheese as a starter and were impressed by the delicious taste and presentation. After examining the menu and struggling to choose just one dish for our main, we asked our friendly waiter for his recommendations. We chose to share the pork ribs in a Roja and Verde sauce, and when it arrived at our table, we were both incredibly excited for what was to come. Every part was wonderful, and although we were sure we wouldn’t be able to fit any dessert, when we saw the menu, we just had to try the chocolate ganache cake with coffee cream. I’m a big sweet person, so the dessert ticked all of my boxes, and I would happily eat it over and over again if I could!

A FOND FAREWELL

After a busy few days exploring the city, it’s safe to say we were in need of some sleep. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I drifted off and awoke never wanting to leave.

When we eventually motivated ourselves to go downstairs for breakfast, everything looked delicious and we couldn’t decide between the continental or cooked option or which of the vast array of drinks to go for. The food was delicious and when it came to checking out, we felt incredibly sad to be leaving and wished we could re-live the experience all over again. We’ll be heading back to Paris soon, and when we do, we’ll definitely be staying at both of these fabulous hotels again.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 93

HAMPSHIRE! Hooray for

the New Forest to find out what makes it such a special spot for mini-mooners

I’ma huge advocate for mini-mooning in the UK (obviously), and since the dark days of lockdown it’s increasingly become the thing to do –short trip post W-day here in Blighty followed by an overseas vacay later on if you’re so inclined. I’m here to tell you that for the former you’ll struggle to find better than the glorious New Forest. I recently visited two incredible hotels in Hampshire, each one perfect for newlyweds in their own way.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

After a picturesque drive through the New Forest spent pony spotting, we pulled up at Grade II listed hotel The Montagu Arms, tucked away in a quiet corner of Beaulieu, our first port of call on this trip. Incidentally, thanks to the rain I never did see a pony! The ample car park is located behind the hotel, so our introduction to the place was via the absolutely delightful grounds, reminiscent of the eponymous childhood story, The Secret Garden. Scattered with water features, beautifully tended flower beds, lawns and cobbled paths wending their way to the entrance, I only wished the weather had been kind enough to let us enjoy them more.

AN IDYLLIC RETREAT

Boasting 22 bedrooms and suites in the main house, with 33 in total within the hotel, each has it’s own unique design and layout, featuring the ultimate combination of comfort and sophistication. Decorated in a chic and charming country-house style, the soft tones and textures used to create a peaceful space were right up my street.

Our home away from home for the night was one of the property’s stunning Courtyard Retreats hidden amongst the aforementioned gardens and converted from the house’s original 1920s chauffeur’s garages. I don’t know what I was expecting, but to call Hazel a “room” would be doing it a gross disservice. With the look of a space taken straight from the pages of Home & Garden magazine, its vast glass façade looked out over the central courtyard allowing the best of the outside in, and

the team have left no stone unturned when it comes to providing all the comforts you could wish for. This even extends to the smallest of details such as the mini torch attached to the retreat’s keyring, to help you find your way safely through the gardens to the hotel at dinner time, or stagger back after a hearty meal and perhaps a wine flight.

Let’s talk about the bathroom! Possibly on a par with the footprint of my entire house, it boasted a roll top bath, twin sinks, walk-in shower, bidet, and the necessary, of course. You’re never going to step on each other’s toes getting ready here, and the SenSpa toiletries were a real treat, as well as a hint of what awaited on day two.

I can’t recommend this spot highly enough to newlyweds. It’s the perfect retreat for a secluded, romantic, relaxing break.

TIME TO DINE

It was time to see if dinner in The Terrace, the hotel’s awardwinning restaurant, was equal to the benchmark laid down by our accommodation. Marketing hails it as offering an unparalleled finedining experience, and I can’t argue with that. Led by executive chef, Dan Burrell, the menus here champion seasonality and fresh, hyper-local Hampshire ingredients, including produce from the hotel’s own bountiful organic kitchen garden.

Looking at the menu it was a difficult choice, but ultimately I opted for the 42-day aged beef tartare with horseradish and onion purée to start; followed by Cornish red mullet with champagne sauce, artichoke, mussels, and pink fir potatoes. I finished my meal with a delicious selection of local cheese and biscuits. Every mouthful of the entire meal was an explosion of flavour and culinary discovery, while the knowledgeable and charming sommelier, Paulo, selected the perfect English wine to go with it – a Kentish Chapel Down Bacchus, plus a cheeky taste of Norfolk’s Winbirri Bacchus. No evening would be complete without a nightcap, so we headed to the tranquil lounge for a Brandy Alexander, which I’ve since decided is my new favourite cocktail!

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Incredibly sad to leave the hotel and it’s charming, friendly and helpful team, we set off after a hearty breakfast and hit the road again. Our destination was a mere six miles away in beautiful Brockenhurst: Carey’s Manor Hotel, The Montagu’s sister establishment. Although downhearted to see the latter in my rear-view mirror, it didn’t take me long to turn my thoughts to the planned day ahead spent in SenSpa at my next destination – the excitement was back!

It’s worth pointing out at this juncture that residents of The Montagu Arms can enjoy complimentary access to SenSpa, including it’s indoor pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and gym, with treatments and access to the hydrotherapy pool available at an additional cost. The kind folk there even offer free transfers. The choice of where you decide to rest your head is, purely down to your personal style. Where The Montagu Arms is intimate, boutique, tranquil, and secluded; Carey’s Manor offers 18th-century grandeur, vibrancy and a myriad of spaces to enjoy from the aforementioned spa, to its three restaurants, including modern British brasserie Cambium, traditional French bistro Le Blaireau, and authentic Thai restaurant Zen Garden.

PERFECTLY PAMPERED

On arrival, I wasted no time whatsoever in heading straight to the awardwinning SenSpa. A world-class Thai spa focusing on holistic wellness, inspired by ancient Eastern rituals, it was unlike any I’d been to before, so I was interested to see what the experience would have in store. We’d been treated to Hydrotherapy Pool access, and I was like a kid in a sweetshop. But where to begin? Across two floors, this state-of-the-art facility features the pool itself, crystal steam room, ice room, experience showers, herbal sauna and so much more. Adding this to your visit is something I would most definitely encourage as it’s not to be missed. My treatment was booked for the afternoon – a relaxing, full-body Thai massage using SenSpa’s very own natural products, which lifted me away on a cloud of aroma and ultimate relaxation. My therapist was incredible and really listened to me when I talked to her about problem areas and the amount of pressure I’d like. I headed back to the pool with a spring in my step, feeling revitalised and light as a feather.

There’s a wide range of spa packages available, so there’s bound to be something to suit you both and help you unwind following the highs of W-day.

BON APPETIT

By the time I managed to tear myself away from the calming waters of

SenSpa, there was just enough time to pop back to our gorgeous suite to brush up for dinner. Mum and I were thrilled by its two bathrooms, meaning we could both get ready in double quick time without fighting for mirror or sink space! The hotel has 77 bedrooms and suites all designed with tranquillity in mind. Some Manor Rooms in the main house feature a four-poster bed – honeymoon romance goals. Meanwhile, The Garden Rooms are more contemporary, each with a balcony or patio overlooking the grounds. The newly-designed suites offer a luxurious escape with features such as a roof terrace, spacious living area and chic, marble bathroom.

Our table was booked in Le Blaireau, which promised a menu of regional French food. Given it’s location at the other side of this vast hotel, and the fact the rain still hadn’t let up, we were happy indeed to hear that we didn’t need to set foot outside and could cheerfully wend our way through the cosy corridors to reach the restaurant. As I pushed open an unassuming door at the end of a corridor, I let out a gasp of delight. Was this the Hampshire equivalent of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe? It was as though I’d stepped into the cobbled streets of Paris with the iconic Art Nouveau Metro sign in front of me and shop fronts complete with awning to my right. Past a vintage Citroen DS, lies the main restaurant, every bit the classic French bistro of a bygone era. So... much... fun!

The menu here is humble and indulgent – fine by me – I was ravenous after such a tiring day in the spa! I dined on a soufflé au fromage, a tasty burger from the specials board and crème brulee, all washed down with a glass of French wine, before going to bed full, relaxed, completely content, and dreaming of those illusive New Forest ponies.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 95

Riverside romance

TheMitre Hampton Court could not be placed in a more romantic location; just a five-minute walk from Hampton Court Palace and nestled on the bank of the River Thames. So, when my other half and I whizzed down to the home county of Surrey for a night away around Valentine’s we had high expectations for our stay.

Before checking in, we busied ourselves in The Mute Swan, a pub conveniently placed next door, for a few hours. With the February sun shining down, much stronger than expected, we couldn’t have started our visit in higher spirits. It’s here I left Daniel, basking in the spring weather, while I headed to the Pamper Room, inside Mitre Hampton Court, to experience a life changing massage from the in-house masseuse, Alex.

The combination of soothing music, Alex’s expert touch and delightful spa products from Lola’s Apothecary (www.lolasapothecary.com) meant my hour of tranquillity flew by and I left feeling refreshed and renewed. Whilst my treatment was designed to instil calm and correct energy imbalances, there was a variety of other therapies to alleviate both mind and body. The Stimulating Treatment designed to eliminate toxins and encourage lymph drainage is perfect for those looking to reduce swelling and improve circulation in their bodies.

I found my partner, where I left him, feeling like a new woman, and we checked into our room for the night. The river-facing Royal Rooms are aptly named as they are indeed fit for royalty. Named individually after historic characters who have famously influenced our part of the world, they boast stunning décor, king-sized beds, complimentary toiletries and – the standout feature of any room – a huge free-standing bathtub. These suites truly are a welcoming space for mini-mooners where you can leave your worries at the door.

The interiors throughout this boutique hotel are certainly breathtaking. The old building has all the grandeur of an English country house, but the modern, inner-city inspired furnishings give the place a kitschy charm. The perfectly curated style looks as though it’s jumped straight out of your Pinterest board, and you’ll end your visit with a strong desire to redesign your living room!

After unloading our bags and freshening up – and admittedly indulging in the orange and ginger liqueur gifted to us in our room – we were more than ready for dinner. Our evening meal took place in the

Mitre’s 1665 Riverside Brasserie. With a centrepiece bar, wine room, and gorgeous al fresco terraces perfect for the warmer months, the restaurant is rich in atmosphere.

We were lucky enough to sample a delicious selection from both the seasonal menu and house specials. Starting with a local Berkshire venison tartare and the warming truffle and Jerusalem artichoke soup, this was a wonderful indication of the restaurant’s dedication to combining locally and worldly sourced delights.

Moving on to our mains we were thrilled with both the pan-fried salmon and beetroot risotto, the fish pairing wonderfully with the French Sancerre our waiter was kind enough to recommend us. But the real star of the show from the whole evening was the duck fat chips loaded with Wiltshire truffle hollandaise – seriously naughty and certainly calorific but they tasted so good it doesn’t even bare thinking about.

The wait staff throughout our entire meal were friendly, welcoming and reassuring – making all the difference to our experience. We ended the night toasting to our stay with two – equally delicious as they were splendid looking – espresso martinis.

After dinner, drifting off to the land of nod was easy, and we had a wonderful night’s sleep.

My other half and I both share a great love for breakfast foods and are known to spend all week searching for the best brunch spot for a Sunday morning, so our morning meal the following day was arguably one of the things we were most excited for. It’s no understatement to say we were certainly not disappointed. At the buffet you could find a huge selection of delicious pastries, cereals and fresh fruit that made your mouth water just from the sight of it. The barista-made coffee was the perfect pick-meup to start the day, especially whilst enjoying the famous river-side views.

New from The Mitre team this spring, is The Coppernose café. With more of the superb breakfast, brunch and lunch options in a relaxed environment, it’s perfect to pop in if you’re in the area.

If you’re planning a romantic night away to escape from the stress of wedding planning or looking for the perfect staycation destination for your mini-moon, The Mitre Hampton Court is undoubtedly the place for you. I couldn’t fault my stay and I know it won’t take any convincing at all to get my other half to consider a second trip there.
