MUSIC TO OUR EARS
The wedding music packages available from classically-trained musician Aletheia, with more than a decade of experience under her belt as a violinist, singer and pianist come with a fully customisable setlist. She can learn music to a high standard in a short space of time meaning that if couples can’t see their favourite song on her sample repertoire list, she can almost guarantee that she’ll be able to learn it for the big day. She can also play the three instruments at different parts of the day.
Covers of recent songs that she has performed at events including from artists such as Fall Out Boy, The Foo Fighters and Green Day.
Aletheia offers payment plans for weddings that are taking place in 12 months or more so that couples can spread the cost and plan without sacrificing quality. She can also provide a digital recording of the song chosen to walk down the aisle, to help preserve the memory of that magical moment for years to come!
Aletheia tells us, “I love to help sustain a wonderful atmosphere for the time I am playing and help couples create the perfect mood for their dream day.”

ON THE MOUNT SET TO TAKE PLACE AT WASING
A unique new concert series staged on the incredible natural amphitheatre The Mount in the grounds of Wasing in Berkshire, has been announced for summer 2023. On The Mount will take place across midsummer, nestled amongst the magical woodland at Wasing, one of the most diverse rural estates in England.
The inaugural line-up for the series will feature headline sets from Gabriels on 22nd June, Jack Johnson on 25th June, Primal Scream on 30th June, Ben Howard on 1st July, and Sigur Ros on 2nd July. Support artists and further shows will be announced in due course.
Soulful British-American trio Gabriels are nominated for this year’s BRIT Awards International Group of the Year, following the release of the first half of their debut album Angels and Queens, released last year. Already touring worldwide and garnering fans such as Elton John, the band will release the hugely anticipated second half of the album later this year. Gabriels will be supported at this show by Olivia Dean, one of the UK’s hottest rising stars, and Rachel Chinouriri, one of The Guardian’s Ones to Watch for 2023.
Hawaiian-born, California-raised Jack Johnson is a Grammynominated, BRIT award-winning singer-songwriter who released his 8th studio album Meet The Moonlight last year to critical acclaim. Fronted by founding member Bobby Gillespie, Primal Scream has a back-catalogue spanning more than three and a half decades, embracing everything from psychedelic pop to degenerate rock’n’roll; euphoric rave to industrial gloom.
BRIT award-winning singer-songwriter Ben Howard released his double platinum-selling debut album Every Kingdom in 2011, followed by a Pyramid Stage Glastonbury appearance.
Icelandic post-rock icons Sigur Ros will perform a UK Festival Exclusive set at Wasing, having last year celebrated 20 years since their iconic third album, Untitled. Famed for their incredible live performances, and the ubiquity of their song Hoppipolla, the band have now released seven studio albums, two films, solo albums, side projects, orchestral and choral works, tech start-up collaborations, music for dance companies and leading visual artists, as well as several film scores.
No longer a traditional estate, Wasing is breaking the mould and offering a different narrative to the connection between people and the planet. The spectacular woodland venue hosts healing retreats enriched with nature, well-being festivals, and restorative events. Wasing previously hosted the Glade dance music festival in the mid-late 2000s and currently hosts the Medicine Festival, a unique remedial festival experience which invites people to come together and envision a more enlightened, peaceful and sustainable world.
On The Mount curators, John Empson and Ollie Rosenblatt of Senbla said: “We’re delighted to bring such a diverse and wonderful line-up to the inaugural year of On The Mount, with artists that match the beauty and spectacular nature of The Mount at Wasing. We can’t wait for audiences to experience something different on these summer evenings beneath the stars and surrounded by the woodland.”
Andrew Perkins, CEO of Wasing Estate, said: “Nature is the cornerstone for everything and as a linchpin between people and planet, Wasing connects heart and soul with the extraordinary ecological world around us. We are exceptionally excited to launch The Mount, bringing audiences and artists together to harmonise in nature and community through restorative musical experiences. We are equally thrilled to announce our partnership with Senbla to deliver an unforgettable line-up of outstanding artists and trailblazing creative entertainment, alongside Wasing’s very own unique & culturally diverse launch event; a cutting-edge curation celebrating revitalising indigenous, world and contemporary music.”
The On The Mount events will be preceded by an intimate Summer Solstice opening event on 21st June, to welcome this new chapter in the story of Wasing, set to feature a diverse and captivating lineup of artists, Wasing Estate, Aldermaston, Berkshire, RG7 4LY

MACDONALD HOTELS PARTNER WITH EVC
EVC has entered into an initial two-year exclusive partnership agreement with Macdonald Hotels & Resorts on a mission to make the EV switch simple. A mixture of fast and rapid chargers will be installed across the group’s portfolio, providing guests and other customers with convenient charging facilities for their electric vehicles throughout their stay.
“We’re excited to announce our partnership with Macdonald Hotels & Resorts to install EV charging facilities across their portfolio. This collaboration not only signifies their commitment to a sustainable future but also enables Macdonald Hotels’ guests to conveniently charge their electric vehicles while enjoying their stay. With this partnership, we aim to create a seamless experience for EV drivers, knowing that reliable and accessible charging facilities are readily available, giving them peace of mind when travelling,” says Nick Ballamy, CEO of EVC.
Hugh Cooper, development director at Macdonald Hotels & Resorts said: “We’re delighted to be partnering with EVC to provide our guests with fantastic new charging facilities. It will greatly enhance the offering at our 30 hotels, reassuring guests that they can charge their EVs seamlessly, as they enjoy their time at our hotels, spas, golf courses, restaurants and other great amenities.”
EVC will be installing the charge points on a fullyfunded basis, covering the cost of installation and ongoing maintenance of the chargers. This will be achieved by utilising spare capacity from the building supplies, as well as establishing new points of connection where necessary. Each site has different requirements and capabilities, which EVC have determined through their grid studies and site surveys throughout the UK. This ensures that each location will have the appropriate number and type of chargers installed.
Demand for EV chargers is already growing exponentially as electric vehicle sales rise year on year. EVC will be installing charging facilities to meet the current demand as well as ensuring infrastructure is in place for additional chargers to be installed, future-proofing the sites.
The partnership will see a large number of reliable EV charging facilities added to the network over the next two years to help meet the growing need for more EV chargers.

HOLY GRAIL TAPESTRIES LOANED TO KELMSCOTT MANOR IN RURAL OXFORDSHIRE
Kelmscott Manor in rural Oxfordshire is famed as the country retreat of Victorian polymath William Morris who was one of the great re-inventors of ancient and disregarded crafts, rejuvenating amongst other things historic embroidery, early printing techniques, vegetable dyeing, calligraphy and tapestry weaving. Visitors to Kelmscott Manor this season can see stunning examples of his enthusiasm for this technically challenging craft.
Visitors will encounter the drama of two tapestries from Morris & Co.’s breathtaking Holy Grail series, designed in 1890 and regarded as one of the greatest achievements of the Arts and Crafts movement. By that date Morris & Co. had raised the art of tapestry weaving to new heights, producing exquisite examples on looms set up at the company’s Merton Abbey works.
The series was designed by Morris and his close friend and associate PreRaphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones to illustrate the quest for the Holy Grail by the Knights of the Round Table. The tapestries have been loaned to the Manor for the 2023 Open Season thanks to the generosity of one of its long-term supporters, Lord Lloyd-Webber.
Kelmscott Manor is open to the public until the 28th October 2023. To find out more, visit www.sal.org.uk/kelmscott-manor

WOVEN BY ADAM SMITH ACHIEVES ONE MICHELIN STAR WITHIN SIX MONTHS
Woven by Adam Smith has achieved one Michelin star, presented to executive chef Adam Smith by The Michelin Guide Great Britain & Ireland. This comes within six months of the restaurant’s launch in September 2022 at Coworth Park hotel in Berkshire.
Woven by Adam Smith offers diners an unforgettable culinary experience in a stunning space overlooking 240 acres of picturesque Berkshire parkland. Adam’s menu offers a tapestry of familiar flavours reimagined in unexpected ways, combining the classics with modern touches and layers of personal experience. The finest produce from Britain’s famed larder acts as inspiration for the seasonally changing menus.
Following the announcement, Adam commented: “I am so happy to have reached this milestone with my driven and dedicated team, who have worked so hard and with such passion since we launched the restaurant late last year. For me, any accolade is so brilliant to receive but this really is a special time for us at Woven. Recognition from the Michelin Guide is a great honour.”
General manager at Coworth Park, Zoe Jenkins commented: “Adam’s culinary skill is at the heart of Coworth Park and the launch of Woven has anchored our reputation as a dining destination in the English countryside. Hawkwell House Hotel has appointed a new wedding planner to help put the venue on the map as the ultimate destination to host bespoke wedding ceremonies and celebrations in Oxfordshire. Lauren Hill has been appointed to boost the hotel’s event planning services and create bespoke wedding packages for couples.
In 2021 Hawkwell House joined the Mercure hotel group and underwent a £3.5 million refurbishment and rebrand to transform the venue into a boutique hotel equipped with all amenities for guest comfort and 77 bedrooms.
The hotel now sits within three acres of landscaped gardens and features a stylish restaurant, lounge bar and elegant heated terrace. The interior design incorporates an Oxford theme throughout with hints of vintage Oxford fashion like Oxford brogues and Oxford shirts.
With three versatile event spaces, the hotel can cater to wedding celebrations of all kinds. Lauren tells us: “The Thames Suite, which is the lergest of our event spaces, is perfect for parties looking for a traditional wedding experience. Meanwhile, the Cherwell Suite is ideal for smaller, more intimate celebrations. As one of the only venues in Oxford with the capacity to host outdoor ceremonies, we can offer a truly unique wedding experience. Our peaceful gardens make a stunning backdrop for large or small weddings or the
perfect spot to enjoy drinks before the wedding breakfast.”
Lauren adds: “Our wedding and event spaces are self-contained with their own bar, terrace and bathrooms so couples can enjoy their special day away from the day-to-day activity of the hotel. Next to the main hotel is Elm House, a self-contained 15-bed house which is perfect for wedding parties who want to experience an intimate, private stay within the hotel grounds. For couples that desire it, we can even offer exclusive use of the entire hotel.”
To encourage couples to host their wedding at Hawkwell House, Lauren has created a special, discounted wedding package for Fridays and Sundays. The all-inclusive package caters to up to 100 guests and includes ceremony and reception room hire, a threecourse wedding breakfast, access to the bridal suite and a DJ for the reception for just £5,950.
General manager Nick Jefford added: “We wanted to take our wedding and event planning services to the next level so we knew we needed a dedicated wedding planner to help us achieve this.”
He adds, “Lauren’s combined years of experience and brilliant contacts in the industry made her a standout candidate for the job and will help us elevate the guest experience.”

There’s also a
complimentary overnight stay for the couple including breakfast with preferential accommodation rates for wedding guests.

All of the 49 bedrooms at the hotel provide comfort for guests with specially discounted accommodation rates available. These preferential rates can also be extended before, and after the wedding day.

THE RELAIS HENLEY BOASTS THE KING CHARLES I SUITE
Nothing is more historic than the recent coronation event and PoB Hotels, which is a collection of carefully curated rooms, the finest restaurants and spas across the British Isles, has The Relais Henley as part of its collection of hotels which was visited by King Charles I on his travels. His Royal Crest remains in the aptly named King Charles I Suite.
Located in the historic market town, The Relais Henley is an idyllic waterside retreat. Situated in a restored heritage building that was traditionally a 16th-century coaching inn, the hotel’s interiors have been inspired by the river that runs parallel and local traditions and craftsmanship have been sensitively incorporated into the redesign. The windows frame the view of the Thames, with bold stripes representing traditional rowing club blazers running throughout its rich wool carpets. The hotel features 40 individually designed rooms, with some named after notable guests to have visited the site including King Charles I and Princess Grace of Monaco.
Boasting four different food and beverage concepts, The Relais Henley is home to The Clipper Restaurant offering all-day dining in a sophisticated setting; The Clip Bar and The Deli, as well as The Quarterdeck Bar, an intimate bolthole tucked into the oldest part of the hotel with the patina of a traditional English pub.
The Glow Medispa located close to the hotel in Henley-on-Thames allows guests to unwind and rejuvenate through a variety of relaxing
through the doors each month.
The Recoup team and Crisis members have carefully upcycled and restored some spectacular furniture to its former glory, presenting a space with a quintessentially English country pub vibe. Recoup supports the members to gain valuable skills in carpentry, which they can then take with them into the world of work.
The hotel purchases Crisis coffee beans from Volcano Coffee Works, to fuel conference delegates in this specially designed space, with 15% of all Volcano coffee purchases made by the hotel going straight to Crisis. Additionally, QR codes around the space encourage delegates to donate directly to the charity.
• Forget Fresh Towels: Donate a Hot Meal to Someone in Need
Also, as part of its commitment to supporting Crisis, from March 2023 onwards, Horwood House is encouraging hotel guests to opt out of room servicing during their stay of two nights or more. Instead of having their room serviced daily, guests can choose to skip this service and for every night guests opt out, the equivalent donation of one hot meal will be made to the charity (per night of their stay).

WONDERLAND
Sarah and Chris’s wedding at The Post Barn that enjoyed a green, navy and white theme will inspire other couples planning seasonal I do’s Images courtesy of
Stephen Walker Photography
32
Sarah Tyerman and Chris Manning married on 18th February 2023 at The Post Barn in Newbury, Berkshire.
Sarah and Chris met via the online dating site Bumble. “I fancied the Manchester City football club manager Pep Guardiola at the time and Chris appeared on my screen with a bald head and a beard, so I thought why not!” Sarah tells us. Chris adds: “I let Sarah think that I lived in Richmond despite only working there - I actually lived in Aylesbury! She looked gorgeous in her profile picture, and appeared to be plenty of fun – definite marriage material!”
Chris proposed in Dubrovnik during a holiday to Croatia. “It was the most surprising non-surprise ever!” Sarah tells us. “I knew it was likely to happen, but I was not expecting it to be that evening, as I wasn’t wearing my nicest dress!” Chris adds: “I was originally meant to ask Sarah to marry me in a hot air balloon in Provence, but Covid restrictions prevented us from travelling to France. So, at the last minute, I arranged a trip to Croatia and sourced a local photographer to capture it on camera - it was perfect and she didn’t suspect a thing!”
SETTING THE SCENE
“We both wanted a barn venue that wasn’t dark inside so we decided to view The Post Barn,” Sarah says. “It’s a bright, contemporary space flooded with plenty of light, industrial-style windows and has a modern, luxurious feel. We both got a good feeling about it the moment we stepped inside.”
On the morning of their wedding, the hair and make-up suppliers couldn’t believe how calm Sarah was. “As cliché as it sounds, I was so excited to be marrying my best friend,” she tells us. “As I walked down the aisle to meet Chris, he was laughing and now tells me that it was a nervous laugh! Also, my father, who is hard of hearing, couldn’t hear the registrar when she was telling him to kiss me on the cheek and then sit down. So he ended up just standing there looking like he was refusing to let go of my arm when in fact he just didn’t hear the instruction!”
Chris adds: “I was the nervous one! I just wanted everything to be perfect for Sarah. Although she had told me not to have my phone
33 REAL WEDDINGS
“The moment when we were sat at the top table and I could see everyone in front of me in the most beautiful setting with my new wife by my side is a memorable moment for me.” - Chris

Classic elegance with a modern twist, picturesque Rackleys is Buckinghamshire’s spectacular wedding venue set in seven acres of grounds surrounded by the beautiful Chiltern Hills.
on me but Arsenal, who I support was kicking off at the time of our ceremony, so I kept checking my phone until the best man confiscated it about two minutes before the bridesmaids walked in! Thankfully, my other groomsmen were updating me with finger symbols of the score as the ceremony commenced!”
Sarah and Chris decorated their winter wedding with a seasonal green, navy and white theme. “Being a winter wedding in February, we wanted green and white touches throughout,” Sarah says. “Chris is an artist in his spare time and has a creative eye, so was able to explain his ideas to our florist, such as having a growing meadow placed on the top table made with the perfect blend of flowers. We also had an arch, in keeping with the meadow feel.”
The couple first spotted the idea for their centrepieces at a wedding fair that they had attended at the venue when they became engaged. “We saw some beautiful centrepieces filled with flowers created by our chosen florist which incorporated golden stands that varied in size which suited the composition of the room,” Sarah says.
As Arsenal fans, the couple named their tables after old and new Arsenal players. “This was my idea,” Sarah tells us. Chris adds: “This suggestion made me realise that I was marrying the perfect woman! Our table plan was named ‘Where you Gunner sit?’ because Arsenal is also known as The Gunners.”
Sarah and Chris had wooden name plaques teamed with sprigs of flowers, fairlylights strung across the beams in the main room and up lighters placed in line with the pillars to add a dramatic feel to the lighting, which later changed to party lights for the disco and band.
The couple had attended a tasting session at the venue before their wedding and fell in love with the food and wine. “Chris is a big foodie, a very good cook and really knows his wine, so we knew it was going to be tough to please him, but the team at the venue did a great job, Sarah says. “Because we were feeding our guests so well, and didn’t want anything go to waste, we decided not to have a wedding cake.”
LOOKING THE PART
Sarah wore a gown by Essense of Australia. “It was originally a sleeveless dress, but as we were having a winter wedding, I had lace sleeves added that matched the lace on the dress,” she tells us. “I also had a long, two-tier veil, and two pairs of shoes.”
Chris wore a bespoke navy suit, a white shirt with his initials monogrammed on the cuffs and a grey waistcoat teamed with a dark green tie and pocket square plus a pair of brightly coloured socks with black brogues. “The groomsmen wore three-piece navy suits (so that Chris stood out in his grey waistcoat) with green ties and pocket squares, cufflinks to match the bridesmaids’ dresses and buttonholes with flower varieties to match those in my bouquet,” Sarah says. “Each was given a pair of colourful socks too!”
The couple’s bridesmaids wore emerald green satin maxi dresses. “My wonderful bride’s man wore an emerald blazer paired with navy trousers and a navy tie,” Sarah tells us. “We also had three younger flowergirls - the older two wore pale green dresses whilst our youngest one wore a gorgeous white dress with a sage green sash.”
TIME TO CELEBRATE
“We wanted our wedding to feel like one big party, so we spent a lot of time choosing our entertainment suppliers,” Sarah and Chris tell us. “We hired a magician, who was a hit with all of our guests. He mingled with the crowd during the early evening. Our four-piece live band, including a saxophonist, played for three hours before the lead bassist turned into a DJ for the final two hours.”

and Joe met in a pub in the same village where they ended up getting married in. “I was there with my mum and auntie for a charity bingo night and it was Joe’s local so he was also in there,” Laura tells us. “He didn’t participate in the bingo but he noticed me. My younger cousin, who was 12 years of age at the time and Joe’s sister, who was also 12, were best friends. Joe must have mentioned something about me to his sister who then
Laura
told my cousin because they ended up matchmaking!”
The couple discussed becoming engaged and decided to go for it. “We were in lockdown during March 2021 so we couldn’t go out to look for our engagement and wedding rings but we ordered them online.”
Here, Laura tells us all about their tipi wedding reception in the countryside that was decorated with a white, olive and gold colour theme.
39 REAL WEDDINGS
Laura and Joseph (Joe) Walker married on 28th May 2022 at St Mary's Church Adderbury in Oxfordshire followed by a tipi reception on their family farm.
We chose St Mary’s Church Adderbury in which to get married which was so beautiful.
One of our friends has a Jaguar car so he very kindly drove my dad and me to the church and then Joe and I travelled from the ceremony to the reception in it.
I was so nervous in the church that I couldn’t look around because I didn’t want to see all of our guests looking at us. When it was time to exchange the rings, I got muddled with my left and right hands!
We arrived at our farm where the tipi reception was being held, and were announced as Mr and Mrs for the first time while being driven in Joe’s JCB digger bucket by his dad, with our bridesmaids on either side!
40
We were lucky to have the land for the tipi to sit in such beautiful surroundings. There was also a wood full of cow parsley that provided an amazing backdrop for our photographs
I made our table plan using the same paper and font that we used to create our wedding invitations with. The details for each table were pegged to a wooden frame that my brother made using chicken wire – it looked great! We used table numbers which worked well.
Our centrepieces were antique gold candlesticks with green candles to tie in with our colour theme. I filled milk bottles and other small glass bottles with cow parsley that we picked from our woods to go with them.
We mainly had white roses, eucalyptus and gypsophila - I wanted simple, pretty flowers so we stuck with the colours of green and white. I knew that I wanted plenty of eucalyptus so the year we became engaged, I planted 12 eucalyptus trees for free foliage to use at our wedding. Our talented florist then used what she could from our garden and sourced what she couldn’t locally.
We displayed small posies along the pew ends and displayed flora and foliage in urns inside the church.
41 REAL WEDDINGS
I met the owner of Annabel’s Patisserie at a Christmas market and as soon as I tried her chocolates, I knew I wanted them for our wedding favours. We sampled plenty of flavours to pick the perfect combination of two chocolates in an olive-green colour with gold specks. We asked Annabel to colour-match them to our theme and they were wrapped in small boxes sealed with a personalised gold wax stamp on the top handmade by my dad. We also made our place names with the names printed on brown gift tags with a dried flower glued to the corner of each one.
My dress was by Justin Alexander dress. I had no idea what style of gown I wanted but when I tried this off-the-shoulder one on, I just knew it was the one, I looked at more but kept going back to this. Because it was a very detailed dress, I kept the accessories to a minimum with a simple veil and a tiny gold necklace.
I wore a pair of shimmery heels with personalised soles.
We had a statement four-tier cake which looked so elegant and tasted delicious!
We created a festival vibe with two food stations outside serving different dishes which then changed for the evening reception.
The groomsmen wore blue suits with white Liberty-print ties and white shirts teamed with brown shoes – they matched Joe and all looked great! Our beautiful bridesmaids wore long lilac dresses with detailed tops and pleated skirts.
Joe wanted a tweed suit but soon realised this would be too hot! He looked great in his trousers, waistcoat and shirt.
We had a family friend entertain our guests with his disco into the early hours of the morning! We created a playlist containing a wide variety of songs – he said it was the best playlist he had ever had.

and Andrew met at a cocktail reception for entrepreneurs. Julia is a business coach and wanted Andrew as a client while Andrew is a CEO and software industry entrepreneur and wanted Julia to be his wife! “I told Andrew that he was too short and wasn’t my type because, as an ex-model, I’m 6ft tall,” Julia tells us. “Andrew is 5ft 9in and is an ex-semi-pro rugby player. Undeterred, he continued his pursuit of me until eventually, I agreed to meet him for drinks at Soho House where I arrived with two of my best friends! Andrew’s persistence and consistency paid off, and eventually I agreed to go on a proper date with him and the rest, as they say, is history.”
The couple became engaged during a surprise proposal. Julia tells us, “We had been getting the house ready and packing a suitcase for a trip to the US the following morning and Andrew told me that he was taking me for drinks at the nearby Roux at Skindles to celebrate Christmas. I went to get ready and re-appeared to find champagne and two glasses waiting. Andrew asked me to take a seat and wanted to play a game where I remained silent for five minutes (which is a difficult task for me but I agreed!) He began to play the song Heal the Pain by George Michael and produced a selection of giant cue cards which he used to tell our love story and make a silent wedding proposal. I agreed, and Andrew produced a beautiful Tiffany ring.”
SETTING THE SCENE
The couple had heard about the wedding venueHedsor House which was only located two miles from their house. Unbeknown to Julia, Andrew had conducted a viewing there and had provisionally booked it for August 7th – the only August date available in 2022! He then told Julia there was a wedding fair just down the road so they attended and Julia fell in love with the venue, at which point Andrew told her it was booked!
Julia and Andrew decorated their day with an elegant white theme. They had crisp white table linen, white flowers, hand-written calligraphy place names, and a giant greeting sign with a timetable and table plan. “Our table names were after cars because Andrew is a classic car collector so two of them were displayed outside Hedsor House,” Julia tells us.
Julia and Andrew had three wedding cakes, one was gluten-free, one was Vegan cake and one was plain. They also had a cheese wheel cake.

LOOKING THE PART
“I wore a gown by Suzanne Neville and accessorized it with a pearl drop and rhinestone necklace,” Julia tells us. “I also wore a Cartier bracelet and a pair of elegant diamond stud earrings.”
Andrew wore a white tuxedo with a pair of black trousers while the groomsmen wore French navy and black tuxedos teamed with black trousers.
TIME TO ENTERTAIN
The couple had a string quartet and a band to entertain their guests. “Andrew surprised me with his daughter, Maddy singing 1000 Years by Christina Perri live accompanied by the string quartet during our wonderful ceremony, Julia says. “He has also arranged a flash mob – the Thames Valley Chorus Barbershop Quartet who appeared during the service from the balcony above. He sang his speech to a live accompaniment and his best man arranged for Nigel Farage to record a video for the groom (he is not a fan!) The entire day was amazing!

We visit two of the region’s finest wedding designers to reveal what’s in store for brides this season
CAROLINE DAVIDGE BRIDAL
This Oxfordshire-based designer hand-makes beautiful bridal veils from her home and sells them through her Etsy store. Caroline tells us, “I fell in love with bridal fashion while planning my wedding. I was so excited by the idea of working with gorgeous bridal fabrics, putting my creativity to good use - I love what I do and I hope that it shows in the veils I make.”
She adds, “I’m inspired by nature, particularly flowers, which form the basis of my veils. The design process usually starts with finding a beautiful flower somewhere in the countryside. From there, I’ll draw sketches and experiment with different ideas for how to create a new design from that flower. Next, I’ll figure out which materials and techniques will be the best to bring the design to life and then it’s time to create the first sample, often with a few tweaks along the way! I’ve challenged myself to learn new skills, such as the craft of tatting, to create embellishments like you see on my Blossom and Primrose veils and I’m looking forward to picking up new skills to use in future designs.”
Catherine wants every bride to feel the same magic and happiness wearing one of her designs on their big day as she feels making them. www.etsy.com/shop/carolinedbridal; www.instagram.com/carolinedavidgebridal

KEEP CALM AND MARRY ON
Professional nutritionists from Wedding Wellness share their stress-beating tips
Feeling the pressure to get everything right and done on time is inevitable when it comes to wedding planning. With a seemingly endless todo list and preparing to expect the unexpected, the sense of overwhelm can quickly take over. This, in turn, results in its own issues such as impaired sleep, digestive issues, skin breakouts, low mood and anxiety. While it isn’t helpful to tell someone planning their big day to simply not stress, thinking about ways to support a stressed body and maintain overall good health, can help prevent some of these unwanted symptoms and make the whole process more manageable.
Read on to discover five ways to support yourself against stress in the run up to your wedding day, courtesy of Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews at Wedding Wellness...
PRIORITISE SLEEP
One of the most underrated activities when it comes to your health is a good night’s sleep. Quality sleep isn’t purely about how many hours of shut-eye you get, but also about being mindful of eating and lifestyle habits, and how they can affect rest. When we consistently sleep well, our brains and bodies are more resilient, making us better at healing, fighting infection, concentrating and making decisions.
Avoid alcohol and caffeine in the run up to bed time, as both disrupt the brain’s natural restorative activity and block deep sleep, which is key to optimal health.
MAKE TIME FOR MOVEMENT
Exercise is great for physical health but
movement is just as important for our mental health, and ability to handle stress. Our bodies react to stress in the same way they might if encountering a bear in the wilderness! Allowing them the chance to move and release the build up of tension that comes from being in a stressful state, helps them to calm down and return to a state of normal. Movement in any shape or form also encourages deep or mindful breathing, which is another brilliant way of reducing stress and calming the mind and body. Aim for at least 20-30 minutes of your movement of choice per day.
EAT FOODS THAT HELP TO LOWER INFLAMMATION
The reason stress is so harmful is that it causes damage to the body known as oxidative stress. This can result in aches and pains, slow healing and a higher chance of catching a cold. Eating foods that help reduce this damage, are commonly referred to as antiinflammatory, as they promote healing and calm the stress response, aiding everything from gut and hormonal health to improving mood. Some of the best anti-inflammatory foods to include in your meals are: berries, ginger, garlic, dark green leafy vegetables, oily fish, nuts and seeds, avocado and wholegrains.
TAKE REGULAR BREAKS
When you have an endless to-do list, it’s easy to assume every spare moment should be used to work through as much of it as possible. Taking
proper breaks and using that time to actually relax, will calm your otherwise overworked nervous system and help your body return to a rested state. Use those moments to distract yourself with something calming, such as music, conversation or a proper lunch break away from a screen. Not only will this help reduce how stressed you feel, you will digest meals better and feel less fatigued too.
EAT REGULAR, WHOLESOME MEALS
It might sound obvious, but one of the best things you can do for your health is to eat wholesome, balanced meals at a regular time each day. The body loves habit and thrives on routine, so regular meals will help nourish and support a stressed body. Making sure you’re eating foods that include complex carbs will help you maintain energy, support normal body function and improve general health. Look for wholegrains and vegetables; protein like fish, chicken, beans and pulses; and healthy fats such as oily fish, nuts, seeds, avocado and olive oil.

A LOVE LETTER TO YOUR SKIN
I recently attended a masterclass with Super Facialist’s resident skincare expert, Charlotte Connoley, which posed the question: do we really know our skin type? If like me your answer is somewhat hesitant, it may interest you to know that there’s an easy way to find out. Charlotte suggests simply splashing your face with water and leaving it for 20-25 minutes. If it feels prickly afterwards, you have sensitive skin; if the water’s gone, then it’s dry; if the skin is tight, it’s dehydrated; and if it feels perfectly comfortable you’re blessed with a normal skin type. Whatever you discover, Super Facialist has a range of products specifically tailored to each type, recognising this can change throughout the year. This allows you to affordably create your own individual skincare routine to support your skin throughout the seasons.
Having learned that my skin is dehydrated, I tried the divine Rosehip Hydrate Calming Creamy Cleanser (£9, www.lookfantastic.com) and my annoying dry patches have been banished!

BEAUTY NEWS 81
SKIN DEEP
Beauty editor Kelly Andrews caught up with Angela Langford whose eponymous brand offers a wide range of skincare designed to make you feel great
The idea for Angela Langford as a brand started when Angela was working in a stressful, pressured, corporate job in Gibraltar, from which she was eventually made redundant. She knew she wasn’t meant for that world any longer, and set out to create her own business based on her passions. “I was travelling less, which meant I couldn’t easily get my favourite skincare from the UK anymore,” Angela says. “So, I started making my own products for personal use, with no intention of turning it into a career.” But, having discovered a love for the whole process, she did a lot of research and eventually decided to turn her new-found passion into a business, sharing her products with others. She went on to study cosmetic formulation in depth, which in turn opened up a completely new world for her.
Beauty editor Kelly Andrews chatted to Angela recently to find out more about the brand and its products, as well as how they can help you feel skin confident for your wedding day, complete with that gorgeous bridal glow.
possible I use glass jars and bottles, but this isn’t always compatible with the product. If a container is plastic, I use post-consumer recycled packaging. This is an area I work hard to constantly improve on, and over the years, I’ve made a great deal of progress.
Using high quality, concentrated products can help too, because you don’t need to purchase so often. Keeping your routine simple and using up what you do buy can also help.
What are your favourite skincare ingredients that you recommend we look out for?
This is a bit like being asked who your favourite child is, or in my case, favourite pet! It’s a tough one to answer, but I think oils rich in skin-loving omegas and essential fatty acids are vital for our skin’s health. Rosehip, chia seed, argan, and evening primrose are in a lot of my products and I always try to source organic versions.
I’m a huge fan of active plant ingredients too. My current favourites are electric daisy and sea buckthorn. The former has been referred to as nature’s botox and can help to smooth, firm and tighten our skin; whereas sea buckthorn is like a superfood for it. It has so many amazing benefits –it’s calming, soothing, repairing and can help with cell regeneration. Rich in vitamin C and anti-oxidants, it’s a skincare powerhouse, which is why I use it in my best-selling face oil, Bloom & Glow.
People are becoming more conscious of what’s in their skincare products as well as how its produced. How can we ensure our beauty products are as harmless to the environment as they are good for our skin?
I’m a very small-scale producer and I make everything myself in small batches. This means, there’s very little wastage and the products aren’t stored for months on end in a warehouse. I also use organic ingredients wherever available as these are also better for the environment.
We’re primarily an online brand, so I don’t use any outer packaging, and this small change can help to make a positive difference. Where
What would you recommend as the best approach for a bride or groom concerned about sensitive skin in the run up to the big day? Don’t introduce a new product to your skincare routine too close to your big day. Also, avoid any treatments or introducing new make-up. If you have regular facials, that’s fine, but going for something different a week beforehand may upset your skin. If you’re having your make-up applied by a professional, make sure you discuss this with them during your trial and ask to use your own make-up products if you’re worried.
Can you suggest a skincare regime that will ensure skin is in tip-top condition, providing the perfect base for a W-day make-up artist? Cleanse every morning and evening. A double cleanse with a balm or
“My aim is to make people feel great about their skin no matter their age. When we feel good about our skin, we feel better about ourselves in general, so my goal is just that – to help you feel great.”

oil in the evening is great too. The first will remove the make-up and SPF, the second is to cleanse the skin. Unless you’re very sensitive or have rosacea, I’d recommend using an exfoliator twice a week too in the evening after cleansing. Look for something with fruit acids (AHAs), which help to slough away dead, dull skin.
A once-a-week brightening face mask will really help to liven up your complexion and even out skintone. As long as you introduce them a few months in advance of your wedding, a mask the night before is wonderful. It will help to soften and smooth your skin ready for flawless make-up application and it’ll help you to relax too. Also, be sure to moisturise daily, keep skin hydrated with a tonic, and by drinking plenty of water.
Finally, if there’s one thing I think can make an enormous difference, it’s using a face oil. Even if your skin is oily, it can really help and there’s one out there for everyone. Brightening and balancing versions are wonderful, and you can use a drop after your make-up has been applied for extra luminosity.
What would you suggest to those worried about congested or oily skin and the effect this will have on their overall make-up look?
I always come back to cleansing as the key to great skin, yet it’s often the step people either skip entirely or skimp on. Cleansing wipes are a real no-no for me, they just move dirt around your skin and don’t cleanse properly. They aren’t great for the environment either, so I’d really avoid these.
The other important thing, particularly when you have oily skin, is to choose balancing products. Often, those aimed at this particular skin type are harsh and strip skin of its natural oils. This doesn’t solve the problem though, in fact it has the opposite effect, making your skin panic into producing even more oil.
It may surprise you to know that oil isn’t the enemy, being oil-free can be though. I even advise people with oily skin to use a facial oil in the evening. It can take time to get used to, and might take longer to even consider, as it does sound counter-intuitive! The key is to use the right
ones – light, easily absorbed and balancing are what you need. Look for ingredients including rosehip, kiwi, thistle (also known as safflower) and jojoba, all great for oily, congested and combination skin. Massage a couple of drops into clean skin every night. Plus, if you aren’t sensitive to them, essential oils can also help to clear congested skin. Look out for palamarosa, cypress, bergamot, lemon, lemongrass and rose geranium.
When is the best time to make changes/improvements to a skincare regime in preparation for a wedding?
It can take time for our skin to adjust to new products and new ingredients. When you try something new, it’s not unusual for your skin to become dry or for you to experience a little redness or even breakouts. This is just our skin adjusting. It does depend on the individual and also what products your skin is used to, but to be safe, I’d give yourself at least two months to introduce changes and new products. This also leaves time for you to see the results.
What products couldn’t you live without?
I use either Clean Sweep Cleansing Balm, and I Can See Clearly Now Make-up Remover. I then follow with a second cleanse using Sweet Cheeks Non-Foaming Face Wash. I exfoliate a few times a week using Scrub Up Exfoliator and use Look on the Bright Side Face Mask once a week – mixing it with some Freshen Up and a few drops of Bloom & Glow. In the day I’m never far away from a bottle of Freshen Up Hydrating Skin Tonic – I love to use it when my skin needs a hydrating boost. Most of the time I use A Little Lift Serum followed by Bloom & Glow face oil in the day and at night Bloom & Glow or Repair & Renew face oil on its own – I just love face oils and the benefits they have on our skin.

Q&A
Local experts reveal all
KEEP CALM AND RELAX
I feel anxious about being the centre of attention, so how can I calm my nerves on my big day?
Meet the expert: Jane Tarrant is a breathing re-trainer and the founder of LiNK BREATHING based in Bicester, Oxfordshire.
Jane says: The good news is that the tool you need, your breathing, is already inside you! Now learn how to use it to calm your nervous system. You can let it run away with itself, or you can consciously control it in advance of your nervous system feeling unsafe. You are the centre of attention, but your breath will remind you that you are safe.
Step 1) Pause...you have plenty of oxygen.
Step 2) Breathe in through your nose calmly, and into the bottom of your lungs. Avoid a big breath or breathing into your upper chest.
CELEB STYLE
How can I get the look of celebrity brides Sofia Richie and television personality Jamie Laing’s new wife, Sophie Habboo?
Meet the expert: Clare Bellman is the face behind Millie Make-up. She’s a professional hair and make-up artist based in Windsor and covers weddings throughout Berkshire.
Clare says: I love an effortless and natural-looking bridal look and a brilliant example of this was Sofia Richie at her recent wedding. Plenty of skin preparation will have taken place to create the radiant look that she had. A glowing base on which make-up will sit well is essential, and that prep will enhance the skin to give an inner glow. Such natural make-up, with a fresh, clean and polished overall look, needs natural lashes too. Her elegant hair with the centre parting oozed style and we’ve been seeing more of this look recently in up-dos and styles worn down. Hair extensions were probably used to create the perfect bun - if you’re wearing your hair up (or down) and you don’t quite have enough hair or have layers then clip-in extensions will work well.
Bride Sophie Habboo, who recently married Jamie Laing, unveiled a radiant look which was quite glamorous but also understated and low-key in parts. Her bouncy locks were blow-dried but also most likely
Step 3) Breathe out through your nose even slower than you breathed in. Twice the length of the inhale is ideal.
Step 4) After a few breaths, see if you can reduce your breath until it is silent, taking pauses if you need to.
Step 5) Practice this as many times as you can in the lead-up to your big day, so you trust your body. Then again during the hair and make-up session.
If this doesn’t feel like enough air, your nose feels too small to breathe through, or you struggle to stop your upper chest from moving, you would benefit from retraining your breathing habits. How we breathe 20,000+ times a day matters more than we were ever taught.

tonged or had large rollers in to get the lift in the root and bouncy ends. I love this hairstyle, more ‘undone’ than the Hollywood wave but it’s very wearable and looks gorgeous. Again, clip-in extensions can help with length and thickness if you don’t quite have enough hair to create this look. The make-up is glowy and bronzed - a very modern bridal look using neutral tones which are wearable colours for most. Added glamour can be achieved with strip lashes or individual clusters that accentuate the eyes adding extra drama.

The experts at WatchPilot advise on how to choose the perfect watch for your big day
Awatch should complement a groom’s suit, however it should also be a timepiece that they will want to wear for years to come. Co-founder of WatchPilot.com, Tim Harrison, has shared with County Wedding Magazines’ grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, his expert advice on buying and investing in a timepiece for your big day...
What type of watches are available for grooms-to-be?
The most common watches are quartz, which offer accurate timing with minimal maintenance. Quartz watches also have the most affordable watch movements.
Then there are automatic watches which selfwind using kinetic energy. These store energy by using the movement of your wrist but are typically more expensive than quartz options.
Mechanical watches function via an intricate series of tiny components working together to power the watch. These never need batteries because they require hand-winding to operate. They are super reliable and often very attractive to look at but they do come with a higher price tag than other timepieces.
The final type is the solar watch, which has the ability to convert light energy into electrical energy; they do not require battery replacements and feature a quartz crystal movement for accurate timekeeping.
What are the latest watch trends?
Watches mean so much more than just telling the time; they represent every second of our lives. Some of the most recent style trends include vintage watches with nostalgic elements such as thin cases, minimalistic dials and those with beautiful heritage.
Smart watches are continuing to be a big
trend as people are increasingly investing more in their health and wellbeing, and these timepieces are the best for staying in tune with your body while you meet your fitness goals.
There has also been a huge increase in using bold colours in both jewellery and watches. Blue, green and other pastel colours have been particularly utilised by many brands, producing a variety of new lines and limitededition pieces.
How can grooms-to-be add a personal touch to their wristwear?
A wedding is a great opportunity to add a sentimental item or two to your wardrobe. Potentially borrow a watch from a family member or someone very close to you. If you are wearing a new watch, consider having it engraved to provide a memory of your special day – this could be a date, initials or a quote.
Appearance is one of the largest factors for grooms when choosing what to wear on their big day, with this in mind, what are your tips for grooms-to-be when selecting a watch to complement their suit?
The most common watch worn with a suit is the dress watch. Consider a simple design with no flourishes. A plain black leather strap and simple dial is understated and refined.
When gifting a watch to a groom, what details should be considered?
Opt for a classic and elegant design. Much like an engagement ring, the watch should stand out, however not be too extravagant. Consider taste and style preferences for example, if he’s sporty look for a classic chronograph.
If you know what colour metal the groom prefers to wear as part of his wardrobe i.e. on belt buckles or cufflinks, then this could be a hint for the colour of watch they may like.
Lastly stay within your budget! Don’t forget that weddings can cost quite a bit of money, so set yourself a price limit and work within it.
How do you suggest cleaning and maintaining a watch?
Whether you wear it every day or just for special occasions, it’s important to make time to give your watch a bit of TLC with a regular clean. This not only keeps it looking good, but it’s also essential for making sure it works well,
keeps time effectively over a long period as well as for general hygiene.
How often you should clean your watch varies. If you wear your watch every day, then a thorough clean, once a month, should keep it free of dirt and grime. If you’re more of an occasional wearer, then a six-monthly deep clean is recommended.
The first step is to take a look at the manual that came with your watch. This should give you a good idea of what you can and can’t do during the cleaning process. Next, you’ll need the proper equipment. A few essential items that will help you give your watch a thorough clean include a microfibre cloth, cleaning fluid, brushes, a watch strap remover tool and a Cape Cod polishing cloth.
If your watch strap is made from leather, fabric or silicone, you’ll need to remove it before you can start cleaning. You’ll also need to push or screw in all the crowns (the winders) and buttons to prevent water or moisture from damaging the internal workings of your watch.
There are some parts of your watch, like the crown and buttons, that might be too small to effectively clean with your cloth, and this is where your cleaning brushes come in. They’re perfect for getting into all the nooks and crannies, including the crown, buttons and inside the lugs. Always spray the cleaning fluid onto the tip of each brush, not the watch itself, and use a dry part of your microfibre cloth to remove any excess.
Now it’s time to buff or polish your watch using your Cape Cod polishing cloth. Not only will this remove any streaks and brighten up the surface of your watch, but it’s also a great way to buff out any fine scratches or blemishes.

HONEYMOON NEWS 91
OF LOVEThe city
Aftera speedy trip on the Eurostar and a leisurely stroll, we arrived at the Shangri-La Paris. With all that Paris has to offer, the actual accommodation you find yourself using can often feel like an afterthought. However, with the history and majesty of the Shangri-La Paris, the hotel is as much a tourist destination as the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe or even the Eiffel Tower. A former home of Prince Roland Bonaparte, overlooking the River Seine, the hotel is centrally located in the 16th arrondissement and seamlessly blends European grandeur with traditional Asian hospitality.
FIT FOR ROYALTY
Upon arrival, we were greeted by a welcoming member of the hotel concierge who checked in our bags while we were given a guided tour. The building is a stunning feat of architecture and the location alone is enough to take your breath away. The hotel has plenty of stand-out features (too many to mention), but the impressive marble-lined swimming pool converted from the former stables, the relaxing spa, state-of-the-art health club and stunning entrance hall are all must-sees.
If you want to relax with a drink in your hand, then you’ll feel right at home in the stunningly decorated Le Bar Botaniste or Les Lounges, both of which offer a friendly and impressive service.
SUITE DREAMS
Catching our breath for a moment, we were shown to our suite. In all honesty, the view of the Eiffel Tower a few hundred feet away, in plain sight of our room, made it very hard to focus on the suite itself for a good few minutes! But after wiping the stardust from our eyes, we discovered that we had been treated to a magnificent space. The biggest bed I’d ever seen, a walk-in wardrobe and a lavish bathroom greeted us; with every aspect of the room designed around that view. The attention to detail was beyond anything I could have imagined with every amenity you could possibly need at your fingertips.
One of my favourite aspects was the balcony, which showed the tower in all its splendour and views of the city at every turn. Sitting there with a cup of tea and homemade macarons was one of the highlights of the trip, and I opted to be out on the balcony every spare moment I had.
EAST MEETS WEST
There are two restaurants at Shangri-La Paris, both of which are beautifully decorated with stand-out food. Shang Palace, where I had the pleasure of dining, is France’s only Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant and what a treat it was! Inspired by Southeast China’s culinary traditions, the restaurant offers authentic Chinese cuisine by chef Samuel Lee.
With so much choice, we were a little lost for words, but thankfully the charming hostess was very helpful and suggested options that she felt we would enjoy.
Every dish was incredible and the food complemented the surroundings perfectly. We started with the chef’s special sashimi; immaculately prepared, it set the standard for what was to follow. The lobster dumplings were a particular favourite of mine and is something I’d eat every day if possible. After several dishes, it was safe to say I was stuffed, but when the dessert arrived, I couldn’t help myself; the rice balls with mixed fruits and whipped cream was delicious and one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime meal, then this is it. It’s been months since we visited, but we still talk about how delicious everything was.
TRUE ROMANCE
With such awe-inspiring surroundings, we couldn’t resist a short stroll over to the Trocadéro and across the Seine to the Eiffel Tower. As beautiful a sight at night as during the day, we couldn’t believe our fortune.
When we eventually headed back to the hotel, we wearily made our way up to our bedroom. The suite had an impressive TV, but it almost felt like a redundancy next to the view from the windows. I’m typically a blackout sleeper, but on this occasion, I had to sleep with the curtains wide open.
After a wonderful night’s sleep, we ordered breakfast to our room and enjoyed it out on our balcony terrace. Barely noticing the brisk February weather, we dined in what felt like the historic heart of Paris. Breakfast was up to the high standards we’d come to expect from the Shangri-La Paris, and when it came to checking out, we felt devastated to be leaving.
I can say with absolute certainty that we left with our chi restored and look forward to returning in the near future!

Melissa Cullen reveals why Paris is the perfect honeymoon destination
92
For our second evening in Paris, we had the fortune of being hosted by the Hôtel Dame des Arts. Just a stone’s throw from Notre-Dame, it’s located in the Latin Quarte, which is considered the artistic heart of Paris. The hotel boasts terrace rooms looking out to the Eiffel Tower, a spacious and luxurious rooftop bar, and a charming secret garden courtyard – a gem in the centre of a bustling, metropolitan area.
Entering through a sleek, sliding door, we felt like we’d been invited into an ultra-secretive club. The hotel’s lobby, with its dark motif, stylish sofas and low lighting simultaneously blended Art Deco architecture with the feel of a futuristic nightclub. After checking in, we were shown up to our room, which continued the theme exhibited in the lobby. The architectural vision of the hotel is singular, drawing you completely into the world the owners have created.
SLEEK AND SOPHISTICATED
Our room was the natural extension of the hotel; with all the amenities any couple could desire. Every aspect had been well thought out and cleverly made use of the space available. A sliding, frosted-glass door separated the bedroom from the bathroom area, and the use of lighting and sleek, curved panelling made us feel like we were on the set of a high-budget movie. Our room even had a terrace looking out to the Eiffel Tower, bringing us back into the heart of Paris.
DRINK IT ALL IN
After dropping off our bags, we were given a guided tour of the hotel. The beautifully arranged restaurant and bar giving way through an impressive door to a stunning garden space. A mix of comfortable furniture and grounding flora, the tranquillity of the area makes you forget being mere feet away from the busy streets surrounding the hotel – a true feat. Our next stop was the hotel’s gym. The curved, wooden panelling enveloping the walls of the room is really a sight to behold. The final stop of our tour was the building’s rooftop terrace, and I assure you, our guide had saved the best for last. The terrace looks out in every direction across Paris, choosing a seating location is an almost impossible task!
Major sightseer locations such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame and the Panthéon are all visible from the terrace; with stunning pieces of Parisian history everywhere you look. I can imagine sitting at the bar on a summer’s evening watching the sun go down over one of the most beautiful cities in the world being a truly transformative experience.
FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD
Once our tour had ended, we made our way down to the restaurant for dinner. Starting with a cocktail in hand, the space had a buzzing atmosphere and was full of people laughing and enjoying the splendour. My hubby and I ordered the corn ribs with magic mayo and cotija cheese as a starter and were impressed by the delicious taste and presentation. After examining the menu and struggling to choose just one dish for our main, we asked our friendly waiter for his recommendations. We chose to share the pork ribs in a Roja and Verde sauce, and when it arrived at our table, we were both incredibly excited for what was to come. Every part was wonderful, and although we were sure we wouldn’t be able to fit any dessert, when we saw the menu, we just had to try the chocolate ganache cake with coffee cream. I’m a big sweet person, so the dessert ticked all of my boxes, and I would happily eat it over and over again if I could!
A FOND FAREWELL
After a busy few days exploring the city, it’s safe to say we were in need of some sleep. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I drifted off and awoke never wanting to leave.
When we eventually motivated ourselves to go downstairs for breakfast, everything looked delicious and we couldn’t decide between the continental or cooked option or which of the vast array of drinks to go for. The food was delicious and when it came to checking out, we felt incredibly sad to be leaving and wished we could re-live the experience all over again. We’ll be heading back to Paris soon, and when we do, we’ll definitely be staying at both of these fabulous hotels again.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 93
HAMPSHIRE! Hooray for
the New Forest to find out what makes it such a special spot for mini-mooners
I’ma huge advocate for mini-mooning in the UK (obviously), and since the dark days of lockdown it’s increasingly become the thing to do –short trip post W-day here in Blighty followed by an overseas vacay later on if you’re so inclined. I’m here to tell you that for the former you’ll struggle to find better than the glorious New Forest. I recently visited two incredible hotels in Hampshire, each one perfect for newlyweds in their own way.
GREAT EXPECTATIONS
After a picturesque drive through the New Forest spent pony spotting, we pulled up at Grade II listed hotel The Montagu Arms, tucked away in a quiet corner of Beaulieu, our first port of call on this trip. Incidentally, thanks to the rain I never did see a pony! The ample car park is located behind the hotel, so our introduction to the place was via the absolutely delightful grounds, reminiscent of the eponymous childhood story, The Secret Garden. Scattered with water features, beautifully tended flower beds, lawns and cobbled paths wending their way to the entrance, I only wished the weather had been kind enough to let us enjoy them more.
AN IDYLLIC RETREAT
Boasting 22 bedrooms and suites in the main house, with 33 in total within the hotel, each has it’s own unique design and layout, featuring the ultimate combination of comfort and sophistication. Decorated in a chic and charming country-house style, the soft tones and textures used to create a peaceful space were right up my street.
Our home away from home for the night was one of the property’s stunning Courtyard Retreats hidden amongst the aforementioned gardens and converted from the house’s original 1920s chauffeur’s garages. I don’t know what I was expecting, but to call Hazel a “room” would be doing it a gross disservice. With the look of a space taken straight from the pages of Home & Garden magazine, its vast glass façade looked out over the central courtyard allowing the best of the outside in, and
the team have left no stone unturned when it comes to providing all the comforts you could wish for. This even extends to the smallest of details such as the mini torch attached to the retreat’s keyring, to help you find your way safely through the gardens to the hotel at dinner time, or stagger back after a hearty meal and perhaps a wine flight.
Let’s talk about the bathroom! Possibly on a par with the footprint of my entire house, it boasted a roll top bath, twin sinks, walk-in shower, bidet, and the necessary, of course. You’re never going to step on each other’s toes getting ready here, and the SenSpa toiletries were a real treat, as well as a hint of what awaited on day two.
I can’t recommend this spot highly enough to newlyweds. It’s the perfect retreat for a secluded, romantic, relaxing break.
TIME TO DINE
It was time to see if dinner in The Terrace, the hotel’s awardwinning restaurant, was equal to the benchmark laid down by our accommodation. Marketing hails it as offering an unparalleled finedining experience, and I can’t argue with that. Led by executive chef, Dan Burrell, the menus here champion seasonality and fresh, hyper-local Hampshire ingredients, including produce from the hotel’s own bountiful organic kitchen garden.
Looking at the menu it was a difficult choice, but ultimately I opted for the 42-day aged beef tartare with horseradish and onion purée to start; followed by Cornish red mullet with champagne sauce, artichoke, mussels, and pink fir potatoes. I finished my meal with a delicious selection of local cheese and biscuits. Every mouthful of the entire meal was an explosion of flavour and culinary discovery, while the knowledgeable and charming sommelier, Paulo, selected the perfect English wine to go with it – a Kentish Chapel Down Bacchus, plus a cheeky taste of Norfolk’s Winbirri Bacchus. No evening would be complete without a nightcap, so we headed to the tranquil lounge for a Brandy Alexander, which I’ve since decided is my new favourite cocktail!

Kelly Andrews headed to
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
Incredibly sad to leave the hotel and it’s charming, friendly and helpful team, we set off after a hearty breakfast and hit the road again. Our destination was a mere six miles away in beautiful Brockenhurst: Carey’s Manor Hotel, The Montagu’s sister establishment. Although downhearted to see the latter in my rear-view mirror, it didn’t take me long to turn my thoughts to the planned day ahead spent in SenSpa at my next destination – the excitement was back!
It’s worth pointing out at this juncture that residents of The Montagu Arms can enjoy complimentary access to SenSpa, including it’s indoor pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and gym, with treatments and access to the hydrotherapy pool available at an additional cost. The kind folk there even offer free transfers. The choice of where you decide to rest your head is, purely down to your personal style. Where The Montagu Arms is intimate, boutique, tranquil, and secluded; Carey’s Manor offers 18th-century grandeur, vibrancy and a myriad of spaces to enjoy from the aforementioned spa, to its three restaurants, including modern British brasserie Cambium, traditional French bistro Le Blaireau, and authentic Thai restaurant Zen Garden.
PERFECTLY PAMPERED
On arrival, I wasted no time whatsoever in heading straight to the awardwinning SenSpa. A world-class Thai spa focusing on holistic wellness, inspired by ancient Eastern rituals, it was unlike any I’d been to before, so I was interested to see what the experience would have in store. We’d been treated to Hydrotherapy Pool access, and I was like a kid in a sweetshop. But where to begin? Across two floors, this state-of-the-art facility features the pool itself, crystal steam room, ice room, experience showers, herbal sauna and so much more. Adding this to your visit is something I would most definitely encourage as it’s not to be missed. My treatment was booked for the afternoon – a relaxing, full-body Thai massage using SenSpa’s very own natural products, which lifted me away on a cloud of aroma and ultimate relaxation. My therapist was incredible and really listened to me when I talked to her about problem areas and the amount of pressure I’d like. I headed back to the pool with a spring in my step, feeling revitalised and light as a feather.
There’s a wide range of spa packages available, so there’s bound to be something to suit you both and help you unwind following the highs of W-day.
BON APPETIT
By the time I managed to tear myself away from the calming waters of
SenSpa, there was just enough time to pop back to our gorgeous suite to brush up for dinner. Mum and I were thrilled by its two bathrooms, meaning we could both get ready in double quick time without fighting for mirror or sink space! The hotel has 77 bedrooms and suites all designed with tranquillity in mind. Some Manor Rooms in the main house feature a four-poster bed – honeymoon romance goals. Meanwhile, The Garden Rooms are more contemporary, each with a balcony or patio overlooking the grounds. The newly-designed suites offer a luxurious escape with features such as a roof terrace, spacious living area and chic, marble bathroom.
Our table was booked in Le Blaireau, which promised a menu of regional French food. Given it’s location at the other side of this vast hotel, and the fact the rain still hadn’t let up, we were happy indeed to hear that we didn’t need to set foot outside and could cheerfully wend our way through the cosy corridors to reach the restaurant. As I pushed open an unassuming door at the end of a corridor, I let out a gasp of delight. Was this the Hampshire equivalent of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe? It was as though I’d stepped into the cobbled streets of Paris with the iconic Art Nouveau Metro sign in front of me and shop fronts complete with awning to my right. Past a vintage Citroen DS, lies the main restaurant, every bit the classic French bistro of a bygone era. So... much... fun!
The menu here is humble and indulgent – fine by me – I was ravenous after such a tiring day in the spa! I dined on a soufflé au fromage, a tasty burger from the specials board and crème brulee, all washed down with a glass of French wine, before going to bed full, relaxed, completely content, and dreaming of those illusive New Forest ponies.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 95
Riverside romance
TheMitre Hampton Court could not be placed in a more romantic location; just a five-minute walk from Hampton Court Palace and nestled on the bank of the River Thames. So, when my other half and I whizzed down to the home county of Surrey for a night away around Valentine’s we had high expectations for our stay.
Before checking in, we busied ourselves in The Mute Swan, a pub conveniently placed next door, for a few hours. With the February sun shining down, much stronger than expected, we couldn’t have started our visit in higher spirits. It’s here I left Daniel, basking in the spring weather, while I headed to the Pamper Room, inside Mitre Hampton Court, to experience a life changing massage from the in-house masseuse, Alex.
The combination of soothing music, Alex’s expert touch and delightful spa products from Lola’s Apothecary (www.lolasapothecary.com) meant my hour of tranquillity flew by and I left feeling refreshed and renewed. Whilst my treatment was designed to instil calm and correct energy imbalances, there was a variety of other therapies to alleviate both mind and body. The Stimulating Treatment designed to eliminate toxins and encourage lymph drainage is perfect for those looking to reduce swelling and improve circulation in their bodies.
I found my partner, where I left him, feeling like a new woman, and we checked into our room for the night. The river-facing Royal Rooms are aptly named as they are indeed fit for royalty. Named individually after historic characters who have famously influenced our part of the world, they boast stunning décor, king-sized beds, complimentary toiletries and – the standout feature of any room – a huge free-standing bathtub. These suites truly are a welcoming space for mini-mooners where you can leave your worries at the door.
The interiors throughout this boutique hotel are certainly breathtaking. The old building has all the grandeur of an English country house, but the modern, inner-city inspired furnishings give the place a kitschy charm. The perfectly curated style looks as though it’s jumped straight out of your Pinterest board, and you’ll end your visit with a strong desire to redesign your living room!
After unloading our bags and freshening up – and admittedly indulging in the orange and ginger liqueur gifted to us in our room – we were more than ready for dinner. Our evening meal took place in the
Mitre’s 1665 Riverside Brasserie. With a centrepiece bar, wine room, and gorgeous al fresco terraces perfect for the warmer months, the restaurant is rich in atmosphere.
We were lucky enough to sample a delicious selection from both the seasonal menu and house specials. Starting with a local Berkshire venison tartare and the warming truffle and Jerusalem artichoke soup, this was a wonderful indication of the restaurant’s dedication to combining locally and worldly sourced delights.
Moving on to our mains we were thrilled with both the pan-fried salmon and beetroot risotto, the fish pairing wonderfully with the French Sancerre our waiter was kind enough to recommend us. But the real star of the show from the whole evening was the duck fat chips loaded with Wiltshire truffle hollandaise – seriously naughty and certainly calorific but they tasted so good it doesn’t even bare thinking about.
The wait staff throughout our entire meal were friendly, welcoming and reassuring – making all the difference to our experience. We ended the night toasting to our stay with two – equally delicious as they were splendid looking – espresso martinis.
After dinner, drifting off to the land of nod was easy, and we had a wonderful night’s sleep.
My other half and I both share a great love for breakfast foods and are known to spend all week searching for the best brunch spot for a Sunday morning, so our morning meal the following day was arguably one of the things we were most excited for. It’s no understatement to say we were certainly not disappointed. At the buffet you could find a huge selection of delicious pastries, cereals and fresh fruit that made your mouth water just from the sight of it. The barista-made coffee was the perfect pick-meup to start the day, especially whilst enjoying the famous river-side views.
New from The Mitre team this spring, is The Coppernose café. With more of the superb breakfast, brunch and lunch options in a relaxed environment, it’s perfect to pop in if you’re in the area.
If you’re planning a romantic night away to escape from the stress of wedding planning or looking for the perfect staycation destination for your mini-moon, The Mitre Hampton Court is undoubtedly the place for you. I couldn’t fault my stay and I know it won’t take any convincing at all to get my other half to consider a second trip there.
