Here comes the sun

Hellolovely readers, and welcome to another issue of Your East Midlands Wedding!

I hope you’ve all been keeping well and have been enjoying spring. There’s something so refreshing about this time of year; it’s all about fresh starts and new beginnings. I’m looking forward to the warming weather and longer days as we slowly creep towards summer. There’s nothing I love more than venturing outdoors; I’m talking picnic dates, barbecues with loved ones, forest walks with the dogs and beach days with friends.

Summer is a wonderful time to tie the knot, not just because of the glorious sunshine – although that’s a huge perk! Thanks to the longer days, you’ll be able to have a later ceremony with plenty of time for your photographer to capture memorable pictures.

Imagine roasting marshmallows with loved ones around fire pits, enjoying outdoor games on the lawns or eating from food trucks. Thanks to the more consistent weather, the opportunities are endless.

Planning a wedding is an exciting experience where together, you can create a dream-worthy day to celebrate your love and commitments with loved ones. This issue is packed with local suppliers who would be honoured to be a part of your magical day. They’ll work with you to offer advice and help bring your visions to life.

Embrace the colour green with this dashing suit from Next.

DREAM-WORTHY SETTING

An award-winning hotel and wedding venue on the idyllic shores of Rutland Water is nearing the completion of its new wedding pavilion, which is set to hold up to 550 guests when opened this summer.

Boasting an elegant and luxury décor style, the Rutland Pavilion will be Rutland Hall Hotel and Spa’s newest addition to its wedding and events offering. Due to completion this June, the large space will be suitable for all occasions while boasting plenty of room for entertainment. Jo White, managing director of Rutland Hall Hotel & Spa says, “This luxurious new pavilion is a continuation of our multi-million-pound refurbishment over the last two years. We strive to showcase how special we are as a destination venue, and we can’t wait to exceed the expectations of soon-to-wed couples.”

Set in 70 acres of conservation parkland with walking routes, leisure facilities and year-round recreational activities aplenty, the property has everything needed to keep the whole family entertained. Please note this image is an artist impression and details may be subject to change.

NEW VENUE ALERT!

Sheepy Meadows is a new Leicestershire-based corporate and wedding venue celebrating its first sustainability award after only opening its doors last year.

Based in Sheepy Magna near the historic town of Atherstone, the property offers a solution for the rising number of eco-conscious couples and corporates. Owners Joe and Joanna Garland own multiple enterprises at the stunning Mythe Farm, including award-winning wedding venue Mythe Barn and corporate event management company Eventurous. The pair decided to launch the tipi setting, Sheepy Meadows, after recognising a need in the market for unique wedding and event venues that are easy to bespoke.

The owners began the journey towards their businesses being greener more than a decade ago. Thanks to numerous solar panels on-site, they’ve since saved enough carbon emissions equating to 8,000 trees being planted. Local biodiversity is also something the pair feel passionate about; from beekeeping to planting 12,000 new trees and a wildflower meadow on-site, the farm is home to some remarkable ongoings.

Following their recent ECOsmart award given by event and hospitality sustainability specialists, Greengage Solutions, the team are celebrating such an achievement. Co-director Joe says, “Living in a rural community, the environment has always been a focal point for us, and we’re proud of our mindful team who share these values. Being certified as an ECOsmart Silver venue has given us the tools to take our sustainability to the next level, continuing to provide a credible venue in the Midlands!”

In the countryside

Whenit comes to an unforgettable experience, a countryside setting with delicious food and an exquisite state-of-the-art spa is the perfect recipe. Situated on 700 acres of tranquil-ancient parkland, Whittlebury Park is a luxurious four-star hotel that provides a serene and elegant setting for tranquil retreats. From the moment we arrived down the sweeping driveway, we were in for a treat as the grand property came into view. After being greeted by the helpful staff, we headed to the spa for the ultimate session to refresh our bodies and minds with the Jewel Of ESPA Retreat package.

Pampering session

We started our day of pampering with a personalised ESPA massage and facial treatment, which lasted 110 minutes and let me tell you, it was absolute heaven! Candlelight, relaxing music and essential oils filled the room to create the complete setting. Combining pure aromatherapy blends and massage techniques, my lovely beauty therapist Nicky focused on my problem areas to remove all the tension in my body – I was on cloud nine the whole session! After drinking some water to rehydrate the body, we headed to the relaxation room for a lie-down.

Tranquil haven

The award-winning Heat and Ice experience at Whittlebury Park helps stimulate your circulation and senses while helping to remove toxins from the skin. We enjoyed moving through the different areas with the team’s suggested bathing plan, which started with the experience shower. Our favourite rooms were the Aromatherapy Crystal Steamroom, Traditional Sauna, and the Caldarium – a warm air bathing room with low humidity. Not forgetting the Ice Crave that works to stimulate circulation and oxygen intake. The hydrotherapy pool with overwater pressure jets to massage the body offered the ideal setting to soak everything in and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere with my partner.

Food glorious food

Included in our package was a buffet lunch with a fantastic selection of seafood, hot dishes, a deli section and desserts. We devoured warm

glass of prosecco

– yum!

The service in the hotel’s 3 AA Rosette fine dining restaurant Murrays was fantastic from start to finish. The team were polite, professional and knowledgeable about the dishes, which made our experience all the more pleasant. Head chef Harvey Lockwood has created the perfect food heaven with meticulously detailed dishes using fresh ingredients. Each mouthful offered impeccable flavours, and the unexpected treats throughout the meal made it most memorable. Cocktails and delicious canapés were served before entering the elegant, intimate dining room. A tomato amuse bouche was served as a pre-meal appetiser before I tucked into a Devonshire brown crab with Worchester apple and avocado. Scottish halibut filler with moray langoustine Hertfordshire cucumber and Jersey royal was served for the main, followed by a deconstructed cheesecake. I enjoyed a brown sugar tart with walnut and Shaftesbury buttermilk for dessert.

Rest your head

What made our stay extra special was enjoying a peaceful night’s sleep in the Emperor Suite. With charming décor and a cosy atmosphere, the space features a lounge, dining area and a comfortable bed. The fully stocked tray with plenty of goodies to enjoy was a lovely touch, as was the mini fridge with drinks. The stunning suite offered a luxury bathroom with a shower, a large water jet bath, fluffy bathrobes and ESPA toiletries. After a peaceful night’s sleep, we headed downstairs to enjoy the buffet breakfast, which featured a selection of juices, yoghurts, hot food, fresh pastries, fruit and cereals. With such a large variety of options, there’s something for everyone to enjoy – I recommend the churros!

Exchange vows

Calling all nearlyweds! Did you know that Whittlebury Park offers three wedding settings on-site for couples to pick from, including The Orangery, The Pavilion and The Atrium? The venue even offers wedding guests preferential accommodation rates so loved ones can relax after dancing the night away.

Kerry and Ryan’s wedding featured boho touches and blue accents

Images courtesy of Sarah Carter Photography

These lovebirds were both travelling when they first met on the east coast of Australia. Ryan was walking with a friend down the street when Kerry and her two friends asked him to take a picture. He thought Kerry was super cute and snapped a selfie of him with his friend in addition to taking photos of the girls. The pair exchanged a few words but then went about their separate ways. After flying to New Zealand, Ryan had the strangest feeling that he wasn’t where he was supposed to be. He had never felt anything like it, but it was like the universe told him he belonged back in Australia. On a whim, having spent less than 24 hours in New Zealand, he cancelled all his plans and flew back to Australia. It just so happened that he bumped into Kerry 200 miles from where they initially met and they hit if off – the rest is history!

Ryan proposed in September 2020 in Newquay, and the couple planned their dream day together.

Here, Kerry shares details about the wedding...

26

Our goal was to have a great party for everyone to meet and celebrate after Covid had stopped so many family gatherings.

We loved that we could have our whole wedding in one location at Crown Hall Farm, which offers a pretty outdoor setting as well as an indoor space in case of bad weather.

The venue’s owners offered a flexible service and advice from day one. They made the planning process much easier.

We had round tables with white tablecloths provided by the venue for our wedding breakfast as well as a rectangular top table.

I loved our flower centrepieces and bouquets by Stephanies Flowers & Gifts. The blooms featured a mixture of white roses, eucalyptus, thistles and a small amount of pampas grass.

Our table plan was created by The Reverie Events UK, and each table was named after places we had visited together on a two-month road trip around Australia. The team also provided dusty blue table runners, white napkins and a white postbox for wedding cards.

27 REAL WEDDINGS

The menu was a crowd-pleaser with soup to start, chicken for main and a cheesecake for dessert.

The venue provided the catering options, which were delicious!

did all our hair on the big day and made a selection of hair accessories for my bridesmaids.

did our make-up, I felt so happy and incredible with my final look!

Ryan wore a navy suit with a white shirt, black shoes and a belt. He finished his look with a light blue bow tie from Ted Baker to go with the colour scheme. The bridesmaids looked stunning in dusty blue dresses! I wore a Grace Loves Lace dress called Hart, which is made from a stretchy lace fabric and is extremely comfortable and flattering. Rebecca White Bridal Boho Bridal The three-tiered cake by Crowland Cake Creations included fruit cake, chocolate and lemon flavours. Our florist provided blooms to decorate the bake.
28

After dinner, a DJ provided by Crown Hall Farm got the party started – the dancefloor never looked empty!

We both felt so excited and happy that the day was final here!

Our friend John conducted the ceremony, and he did a wonderful job.

It rained at one point on the day but then the sun came out and a double rainbow appeared.

I was emotional walking down the aisle and asked my dad to tell me a joke. He relied with, “My obese parrot died today, mind you it’s a huge weight off my shoulders.” The silly joke make me laugh away the tears.

It sounds cliche but everyone who came made our day extra special! We had some loved ones from the US, Philippines, Australia, The Netherlands and Ireland.

REAL WEDDINGS 29

Magical

BEGINNINGS

Becky and Josh had a stunning wedding at Whittlebury Park surrounded by loved ones Images courtesy of Jane Morgan Photography
30

Becky and Josh’s love story started at university, where they met through mutual friends. A few years later, Josh proposed in the Lake District next to Derwentwater in Keswick one early evening, followed by dinner and cocktails to celebrate. The location was very special as Becky lost her mum eight years ago, and the Lake District was her favourite place.

SETTING THE SCENE

The lovebirds tied the knot on October 28th 2022, surrounded by their nearest and dearest. As the pair wanted guests to feel relaxed and have lots of fun, they kept the formalities of a wedding but chose a relaxed vibe to represent them the most.

Whittlebury Park was the perfect location for their special day; they fell in love with The Orangery from the moment they saw the venue. The added benefit of guests being able to stay overnight after dancing the night away was crucial for the pair with family travelling from Scotland to attend. The Orangery was stunning, with the sunshine shining through the glass onto the floor, and the team transformed the setting after the vows for the reception. Becky says, “The events coordinator Janine was lovely and took away the pressure of planning such a big event. She didn’t make us feel silly asking questions and was the only person who didn’t assume that we were both fortunate to have parents. She showed compassion and even offered ideas to help make the day feel easier.”

ALL IN THE DETAIL

The couple stayed with family and friends the night before the wedding at the venue. Most people just walked to the ceremony, but the team offered a Rolls-Royce to take the bride and her squad down to The Orangery.

The flowers were showstopping, thanks to Charlotte at Charlotte Ayre Floral Design. The bride initially sent a photo of the blooms she liked to the florist, who explained the importance of using different textures to create the free-flowing and wild style the pair wanted. She combined other natural-coloured florals to bring their ideas to life and a thistle to highlight the Scottish part of the family.

On the ceremony chairs were wedding newspapers, which introduced the wedding party, shared funny stories, thanked loved ones and had a crosswords based on the newlyweds. It also listed the order of the day so guests wouldn’t miss a key moment.

Two pedestal flowers were on either side of the register table, which were moved to either side of the top table for the wedding breakfast. On the table itself was a stunning arrangement of flowers with trailing eucalyptus.

The wedding breakfast setting looked stunning, with drapes aligning the walls and ceiling with lights to add a romantic atmosphere. The groom’s dad created mesh boards on wooden blocks to showcase photos of the bride and groom, which guests loved to see. They were also thankful for the basket of flip-flops to help their aching feet and the blankets to help them stay warm.

The pair opted for a simple design using a metal grid to ensure the table plan could be easy to switch and swap closer to the time if there were any last-minute changes. The centrepieces featured wooden logs underneath vases full of beautiful blooms and scattered candles, which looked perfect in photos.

The couple had charity badges from Cancer Research and British Heart Foundation for favours; both charities represented loved ones that they’ve lost. There were also mini-heart biscuits for an extra treat on the tables as well as personalised bags

REAL WEDDINGS 31

containing games, pens and goodies for the children.

Whittlebury Park provided a three-course meal in the day and a hog roast in the evening to ensure no one went hungry. The stunning cake provided a delicious treat in the evening, and featured stunning iced flowers. The three-tiered bake included chocolate, lemon and Victoria sponge flavours. Another treat that was a big hit with guests was the sweet table full of goodies.

LOOKING THE PART

The bride picked a stunning gown when dress shopping and added off-the-shoulder mesh sleeves as well as lace butterflies in memory of her mum. The bride says, “I kept the accessories simple with a silver diamond bracelet, matching earrings and a small, interlinked hoop necklace. My godmother lent me her headpiece as my something borrowed. I was happy with how everything looked together and still felt like me.”

The groom wore a navy suit with a waist jacket and Marvel cufflinks as a nod to the couple’s love of the franchise. The groomsmen wore matching suits with different ties to allow Josh to stand out.

The bridesmaids had the choice of eight dusty pink dresses, each picked the style that best suited their figures and preferences. They also had Katie Loxton handbags personalised with their initials and smaller versions of Becky’s bouquet, while the flowergirl had an adorable heart flower wand.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

The couple hired a caricaturist to entertain loved ones during the drinks reception. It was the perfect icebreaker between loved ones; many still comment on the supplier today. The bride says, “It was something different and allowed guests to take a special token home. It was a nice extra that fitted with the flow of the day.” Lincoln Noel played the piano for the ceremony, and during the reception – he played a great selection of music and entertained the room with his sense of humour. He played Becky’s mum’s song on the piano when she walked down the aisle, which made the moment even more special. The pair enjoyed having sparklers outside and dancing to the DJ in the evening.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS

The couple had the most incredible day from start to finish – they wouldn’t have changed a thing! The bride comments, “Everything was just how we’d pictured it; the day was relaxed and fun –although it went so quickly! We were proud to have organised the wedding and sat at the top table watching all our loved ones

32

having fun, which made any little wedding stress worthwhile. It was magical to have our family and friends in one room.”

Walking down the aisle was a moment the bride will always treasure; everyone but Josh disappeared. Becky says, “We squeezed each other’s hand tightly, and I remember turning around to see my grandads in the front row smiling. Dancing on the dancefloor was another special moment as it was full all night, and everyone had so much fun.”

After the speeches, the bride and groom went for a stroll for the first time as newlyweds. Becky adds, “After a crazy year buying a house and planning the wedding, it was just a moment of peace and contentment. We promised our next thing would be to buy a dog, and we now have a little puppy!”

Josh had been a best man for his friend Ben’s wedding earlier in the year and shared embarrassing photos of the groom with guests. During Josh’s groom speech, Ben returned the photos to show the guests on A4 paper for some payback!

Leading up to the big day, one of the page boys asked to be wedding security! He brought special secret agent glasses and walked into the ceremony with them on. He kept everyone in order with his ninja moves. One of the nephews did a reading during the ceremony, and so did Becky’s grandad. These were proud moments that the lovebirds would treasure for years to come.

THE THE sky’s limit

Katy and George had a green and gold colour scheme on their big day

These lovebirds first met while at university and connected on an online dating app. They bonded over their love for the Stone Roses, and the rest is history!

George planned a trip to London one day, which was unusual as he usually left all the planning and organising to Katy. Nevertheless, they headed to the city for a breakaway, and one of their activities was the Emirates Cable Car London. Katy comments, “George pointed to the Olympic Tower for me to look at and dropped to one knee as I turned around!”

George was choked up and struggled to get his words out but managed to pop the questions. Of course, Katy said “yes,” and they spent the rest of the trip in a bubble.

Here Katy shares details about their special day…

35 REAL WEDDINGS

We knew Rothley Court Hotel was the venue for us as soon as we entered the breathtaking chapel with stained-glass windows. The romantic atmosphere made it the perfect location to exchange vows.

Having our whole wedding at one venue with over-night accomadation was essential for us and our loved ones.

As we were planning a December wedding, we knew the venue would have festive touches and kept this in mind when choosing our more neutral colour scheme. We had always loved greens and gold together, which we thought would pair nicely with natural greenery.

We named our tables after roads we’d lived on, both in childhood and together.

Amy from Iris Events UK was so helpful and listened to our vision. She put together our centrepieces with golden candlestick holders, white candles, greenery and leaves.

36

REAL WEDDINGS

I knew my dress was perfect as it made me feel like a princess, and the beading was perfect for a winter wedding. My bridesmaids all wore matching infinity dresses, which could be styled differently to ensure everyone felt comfortable. After the nerve-wracking ceremony, we were then ready to celebrate with loved ones. Going into the evening, England played France in the quarter finals of the World Cup. We were worried about the impact that this would have on the day, but we decided to build our evening around the match to make everyone happy.
37
George and the groomsmen wore navy checked suits and khaki ties to match the bridesmaids.

Saying our own vows was so special and brought a few of the guests to tears – the words meant so much to us both.

Hearing

We both felt so nervous before walking down the aisle, and I don’t think we were prepared for this feeling. Going into the chapel and seeing our loved ones was so overwhelming.

Booking a videographer is something we were considering in the initial stages of wedding planning. We’re so happy we did, as nothing can beat watching the day back with loved ones, hearing all the laughter and seeing the tears captured.

Our DJ from Bang Discos did a great job reading the room and keeping the party vibes going – the dancefloor was full all evening!

ALL IN THE DETAIL

Our experts share venue styling inspiration to help couples plan their dream wedding

Rea Shaw at Confetti Sweethearts

When did your passion for styling start?

After styling my wedding in 2014, I started my own stationery business, which has grown into wedding styling and prop hire.

What do you offer nearlyweds?

I offer wedding styling services, coordination of styling and prop hire. I have a handmade collection, which includes fabric signs, cake stands, table plans and wooden ladders. I also offer dried flowers and plant hire to help couples looking for an alternative way to style their venue. There’s also hot foil stationery with all the colours of the rainbow on offer to fit in with your colour scheme, which includes everything from save-the-date cards and invitations to on-the-day details.

What up-and-coming wedding trends can we expect?

Couples are being braver and are add more personality to their weddings, which means we will see great colour palettes and bolder designs. Expect more statement décor, such as

Bryony Marriott at Bobbi Wren Events

When did your passion for styling start?

I decided I needed a change in 2020 to delve into my creative side and give something to others I feel passionate about. Bobbi Wren Events has given me the drive to inspire and is completely rewarding.

What do you offer nearlyweds?

I have grown from creating ceremony backdrops and chairs to full venue styling with an abundance of bohemian-inspired décor that I collect, rejuvenate and style. This includes table styling, ceremony aisles, lounge areas, draped ceilings and all the little details.

What up-and-coming wedding trends can we expect?

The boho style is here to stay, and it’s all about building on textures, whether that's minimalist touches or full ethereal cascading drapery from neutral palettes to more dusky colourful tones and disco balls for that party vibe.

What is your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part is the actual styling! After months of planning with a couple after many conversations, creating a concept board and meeting other industry professionals to create a fully complemented look is so rewarding.

What’s one piece of advice that you can share with couples?

Create a focused Pinterest board or inspiration gallery before finding your favourite stylist and suppliers. Consider if they meet your vision and book the team as soon as possible so that they are available.

overhead installations and backdrops, giving couples and their guests a more immersive experience. We see a strong influence of home interiors being incorporated, enabling the couple to add their style. Décor trends we are seeing are disco balls, colourful dried flowers, floor arrangements and stylish black metal.

What is your favourite part of the job?

My favourite part is developing a design brief and making my clients' visions come to life. I enjoy all the brainstorming, sourcing, and bringing an idea to life, whether for a real couple or a styled shoot. Seeing it all styled after setting up on the day is very rewarding and makes all the effort worth it.

What’s one piece of advice that you can share with couples?

Venue styling is essential to any wedding as it sets the tone for your day while matching your colour scheme and vibe. A simple space can be transformed into your dream location with just a bit of magic and help from the experts. We’ve hand-selected companies around the East Midlands who can help your vision become a reality. www.photographybyroberta.co.uk www.photographybyroberta.co.uk

One piece of advice, which will make a huge difference, is ensuring your wedding planning feels fun. Planning can be a long process that takes up a lot of your time, so it’s essential to ensure you’re enjoying as much of it as possible. Plan the day together, involve your loved ones and keep everything light-hearted. Check out: https://confettisweethearts.com

Yasmin Gilbert at Sparkle Occasions

What do you offer the nearlyweds?

Established in 2020, we’re a professional and friendly team who focuses on the quality of our work coupled with a high level of customer service. Our popular Sparkles Package includes a selection of our beautiful styling items for the main sections of the wedding day. You will also receive an initial and follow-up consultation, plus the team will deliver and set up your selected items before returning to pack down. The SelfStyle package allows you to choose the desired items and collect them from our base in Leicestershire before returning them to us.

What up-and-coming wedding trends can we expect?

We love to offer our brides something different, so we’re continuously looking at new products to bring into the business. We’re one of the first Midlands-based styling companies to have audio guestbooks, full silk

floral moon gates, cake florals, high risers and scented sand candles.

What is your favourite part of the job?

I love it once our team has finished setting up the ceremony space or the wedding breakfast room – often both. We stand back to ensure we are happy with the finished result and make any tweaks if necessary.

What’s one piece of advice you can share with couples?

I often talk with my couples about remembering that the day is theirs – not their parents, sisters or friends. It’s their wedding, so the day should reflect their personalities and style.

Jackie Aimson at Dreamdécor Hire

When did your passion for styling start?

I have always been creative and passionate about making things look nice. So when my daughter asked me to style her wedding, I had that lightbulb moment and knew this was exactly what I wanted to do. I finally left my previous career in project management to start a completely new one in venue styling.

What do you offer nearlyweds?

We officially started the business in February 2020 – little did we know what was just around the corner. Maybe it wasn’t the best timing, but we have gone from strength to strength since then. We offer a professional but friendly service covering the full range of venue styling services, everything from set up only to the full service incorporating our beautiful décor and props in various themes, styles and colours. What up-and-coming wedding trends can we expect?

Couples are starting to make decisions while considering more ecofriendly and environmental factors. Also, prepare for the return of glam mirrored disco balls; what’s not to love as the light bounces around the room and gets your guests into the party mood?

What is your favourite part of the job?

Delivering couples' visions on their wedding day and seeing those happy smiling faces from clients and other suppliers we work with is so special.

What’s one piece of advice that you can share with couples?

Trust your suppliers to get on with their roles on your special day; you have chosen them for a reason – they will do an excellent job for you.

Tara Knott at Tara Knott Styled Events

When did your passion for styling start?

I have a background in event management and worked in this field for 15 years. I was always so interested in the production of things and loved to see the transformation of a space. My events portfolio focused a lot on large gala dinners and events; I wanted this to be my area of focus and threw myself into any opportunity.

What do you offer nearlyweds?

I started my business in 2012, initially running a hire service that grew into full styling with a collection of services, including fully styled, partial style or dry hire. My prop collection ranges from table scaping décor to neon lights, posing station backdrops and beautiful linens.

What up-and-coming wedding trends can we expect?

So many couples are opting for monochrome weddings to achieve a timeless and classic look. On the opposite side of the scale, full trendled colour with bright seasonal blooms, posing stations and colourful stationery is becoming popular. While wave boards are still trendy, we’re seeing the introduction of different shapes and textures with pillars to display cakes and flowers on or used as a posing station to use up dead space in a venue.

What is your favourite part of the job?

I love seeing it all come together from the initial idea, designing and curating a tablescape. Being part of a couple’s wedding day is a real privilege.

What’s one piece of advice that you can share with couples? We’re big on repurposing as much as possible between the ceremony and the rest of the day, so talk to your suppliers about this to limit waste and help with your budget.

Janie Dowling at Orange Tree Weddings

When did your passion for styling start?

As soon as I could choose my path in education, I decided to study all creative subjects, and I now have a degree in Fashion Knitwear. I’ve worked in retail merchandising, and friends always come to me for advice on styling for special occasions! I love expressing my personality through my style, which translates to my love of styling venues to reflect my couples’ unique personalities!

What do you offer nearlyweds?

We started 10 years ago, and it has always stood out amongst other wedding suppliers. Our speciality is blank canvas venues; we can completely transform even a very basic venue. There is no ‘off the peg’ option from Orange Tree Weddings, as our main ethos is that every couple deserves a unique wedding that reflects them.

What up-and-coming wedding trends can we expect?

Mood boarding is one of my favourite things to do for my clients to get

them excited about styling possibilities. Within the wedding industry, sustainability will continue to grow and people will become more conscious of waste. Single-use plastic, latex balloons and unnecessary wedding favours need to go!

What is your favourite part of the job?

My ideal client gives me a few images of fun and colourful ideas for their wedding before completely trusting me to go wild and get creative for them! Seeing it all come together on the day is so satisfying!

What’s one piece of advice that you can share with couples?

Think outside the box! Look at what you wear, what art inspires you, how you decorate your home and your favourite painting as this could inspire a fantastic backdrop for your big day. You don't have to do what has been done before!

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

I have a very full bust. What styles will suit me and how can I get the right support?

If you have a full bust and are looking for wedding dress styles, there are a few options to flatter your figure while providing proper support. Here are some suggestions:

• A V-neckline or a sweetheart neckline creates an elongating effect that draws attention away from the bust while providing support and extra coverage.

• An empire waist features a high waistline below the bust, which helps to define the waist while accommodating a larger bust.

• A-line and ballgown st yles are known for their flattering silhouettes. They cinch in at the waist and flow outwards, creating balance while reducing the focus on the bust.

• A corset or structured bodice provides excellent support by helping lift and shape the bust. Look for dresses with boning or built-in bras for extra support.

• Avoid a high neckline or a heavily embellished bodice, as these can make the bust appear more prominent. Opt for a simpler design that draw attention to other areas of the dress.

Look your big-day best with top expert advice

PEACEFUL SLUMBER

Our wedding is quickly approaching, and the nerves are kicking in. How can I ensure a good night’s sleep before our big day?

It’s normal to struggle to sleep the night before your big day; it’s a classic case of pre-wedding nerves! But getting a good night’s sleep before your wedding is essential to ensure you look and feel your best.

Anxious wedding preppers who are finding it difficult to ease their mind into sleep may benefit from filling their room with scents to aid sleep. Scents like jasmine and lavender have rich and sweet smells often used for relaxing purposes in aromatherapy. Purchasing a room and pillow mist is the easiest way to bring these scents into your bedroom.

Daily exercise has been long praised for its impact on a good slumber. Planning a routine ahead of your wedding eve can be the trick to get you off to a quick and peaceful sleep, whether that’s a slow yoga session or a trip to the gym for a more intense workout. Staying active increases your metabolism while helping decrease stress and anxiety.

If you wake up in the middle of the night, the best thing to do is avoid mental stimulation; this means staying off your phone and avoiding thinking of any wedding details or worries. If this fails, have a book nearby that you can reach for to distract your mind and send you back to sleep.

The day before your wedding, stay away from spicy foods and heavy meals before bed. Your body needs time to digest the food properly to avoid any difficulties falling asleep.

As tempting as it may be to sit back with a cuppa ahead of your important day, limiting caffeine at least eight hours before heading to bed is essential. Coffee, tea and other caffeinated drinks can stick around in your system longer than expected, leading to a night of tossing and turning in bed.

A LOVE LETTER TO YOUR SKIN

I recently attended a masterclass with Super Facialist’s resident skincare expert, Charlotte Connoley, which posed the question: do we really know our skin type? If like me your answer is somewhat hesitant, it may interest you to know that there’s an easy way to find out. Charlotte suggests simply splashing your face with water and leaving it for 20-25 minutes. If it feels prickly afterwards, you have sensitive skin; if the water’s gone, then it’s dry; if the skin is tight, it’s dehydrated; and if it feels perfectly comfortable you’re blessed with a normal skin type. Whatever you discover, Super Facialist has a range of products specifically tailored to each type, recognising this can change throughout the year. This allows you to affordably create your own individual skincare routine to support your skin throughout the seasons.

SKIN DEEP

Beauty editor Kelly Andrews caught up with Angela Langford whose eponymous brand offers a wide range of skincare designed to make you feel great

The idea for Angela Langford as a brand started when Angela was working in a stressful, pressured, corporate job in Gibraltar, from which she was eventually made redundant. She knew she wasn’t meant for that world any longer, and set out to create her own business based on her passions. “I was travelling less, which meant I couldn’t easily get my favourite skincare from the UK anymore,” Angela says. “So, I started making my own products for personal use, with no intention of turning it into a career.” But, having discovered a love for the whole process, she did a lot of research and eventually decided to turn her new-found passion into a business, sharing her products with others. She went on to study cosmetic formulation in depth, which in turn opened up a completely new world for her.

Beauty editor Kelly Andrews chatted to Angela recently to find out more about the brand and its products, as well as how they can help you feel skin confident for your wedding day, complete with that gorgeous bridal glow.

possible I use glass jars and bottles, but this isn’t always compatible with the product. If a container is plastic, I use post-consumer recycled packaging. This is an area I work hard to constantly improve on, and over the years, I’ve made a great deal of progress.

Using high quality, concentrated products can help too, because you don’t need to purchase so often. Keeping your routine simple and using up what you do buy can also help.

What are your favourite skincare ingredients that you recommend we look out for?

This is a bit like being asked who your favourite child is, or in my case, favourite pet! It’s a tough one to answer, but I think oils rich in skin-loving omegas and essential fatty acids are vital for our skin’s health. Rosehip, chia seed, argan, and evening primrose are in a lot of my products and I always try to source organic versions.

I’m a huge fan of active plant ingredients too. My current favourites are electric daisy and sea buckthorn. The former has been referred to as nature’s botox and can help to smooth, firm and tighten our skin; whereas sea buckthorn is like a superfood for it. It has so many amazing benefits –it’s calming, soothing, repairing and can help with cell regeneration. Rich in vitamin C and anti-oxidants, it’s a skincare powerhouse, which is why I use it in my best-selling face oil, Bloom & Glow.

People are becoming more conscious of what’s in their skincare products as well as how its produced. How can we ensure our beauty products are as harmless to the environment as they are good for our skin?

I’m a very small-scale producer and I make everything myself in small batches. This means, there’s very little wastage and the products aren’t stored for months on end in a warehouse. I also use organic ingredients wherever available as these are also better for the environment.

We’re primarily an online brand, so I don’t use any outer packaging, and this small change can help to make a positive difference. Where

What would you recommend as the best approach for a bride or groom concerned about sensitive skin in the run up to the big day? Don’t introduce a new product to your skincare routine too close to your big day. Also, avoid any treatments or introducing new make-up. If you have regular facials, that’s fine, but going for something different a week beforehand may upset your skin. If you’re having your make-up applied by a professional, make sure you discuss this with them during your trial and ask to use your own make-up products if you’re worried.

Can you suggest a skincare regime that will ensure skin is in tip-top condition, providing the perfect base for a W-day make-up artist? Cleanse every morning and evening. A double cleanse with a balm or

“My aim is to make people feel great about their skin no matter their age. When we feel good about our skin, we feel better about ourselves in general, so my goal is just that – to help you feel great.”

oil in the evening is great too. The first will remove the make-up and SPF, the second is to cleanse the skin. Unless you’re very sensitive or have rosacea, I’d recommend using an exfoliator twice a week too in the evening after cleansing. Look for something with fruit acids (AHAs), which help to slough away dead, dull skin.

A once-a-week brightening face mask will really help to liven up your complexion and even out skintone. As long as you introduce them a few months in advance of your wedding, a mask the night before is wonderful. It will help to soften and smooth your skin ready for flawless make-up application and it’ll help you to relax too. Also, be sure to moisturise daily, keep skin hydrated with a tonic, and by drinking plenty of water.

Finally, if there’s one thing I think can make an enormous difference, it’s using a face oil. Even if your skin is oily, it can really help and there’s one out there for everyone. Brightening and balancing versions are wonderful, and you can use a drop after your make-up has been applied for extra luminosity.

What would you suggest to those worried about congested or oily skin and the effect this will have on their overall make-up look?

I always come back to cleansing as the key to great skin, yet it’s often the step people either skip entirely or skimp on. Cleansing wipes are a real no-no for me, they just move dirt around your skin and don’t cleanse properly. They aren’t great for the environment either, so I’d really avoid these.

The other important thing, particularly when you have oily skin, is to choose balancing products. Often, those aimed at this particular skin type are harsh and strip skin of its natural oils. This doesn’t solve the problem though, in fact it has the opposite effect, making your skin panic into producing even more oil.

It may surprise you to know that oil isn’t the enemy, being oil-free can be though. I even advise people with oily skin to use a facial oil in the evening. It can take time to get used to, and might take longer to even consider, as it does sound counter-intuitive! The key is to use the right

ones – light, easily absorbed and balancing are what you need. Look for ingredients including rosehip, kiwi, thistle (also known as safflower) and jojoba, all great for oily, congested and combination skin. Massage a couple of drops into clean skin every night. Plus, if you aren’t sensitive to them, essential oils can also help to clear congested skin. Look out for palamarosa, cypress, bergamot, lemon, lemongrass and rose geranium.

When is the best time to make changes/improvements to a skincare regime in preparation for a wedding?

It can take time for our skin to adjust to new products and new ingredients. When you try something new, it’s not unusual for your skin to become dry or for you to experience a little redness or even breakouts. This is just our skin adjusting. It does depend on the individual and also what products your skin is used to, but to be safe, I’d give yourself at least two months to introduce changes and new products. This also leaves time for you to see the results.

What products couldn’t you live without?

I use either Clean Sweep Cleansing Balm, and I Can See Clearly Now Make-up Remover. I then follow with a second cleanse using Sweet Cheeks Non-Foaming Face Wash. I exfoliate a few times a week using Scrub Up Exfoliator and use Look on the Bright Side Face Mask once a week – mixing it with some Freshen Up and a few drops of Bloom & Glow. In the day I’m never far away from a bottle of Freshen Up Hydrating Skin Tonic – I love to use it when my skin needs a hydrating boost. Most of the time I use A Little Lift Serum followed by Bloom & Glow face oil in the day and at night Bloom & Glow or Repair & Renew face oil on its own – I just love face oils and the benefits they have on our skin.

BEAUTY

Discover the latest fashion and beauty trends in the world of weddings

As most brides have dreamt about their wedding day for many years, they can feel the pressure to find the perfect hair and make-up look with so many different styles out there. To help with the process, we’ve asked talented beauty companies to share advice for popular wedding themes to help you create a cohesive look throughout your wedding.

Rachel says, “Soft, timeless and natural make-up will enhance your natural beauty!

Rosey tones on your cheeks and lips create a beautifully romantic look. Charlotte Tilbury’s Dancefloor Princess lipstick andPillow Talk Beautifying Face Palette are the perfect products to achieve this look. Soft curls on your hair keep this style polished but elegant, especially when teamed with a pearl headband to be on trend!”

CLASSIC AND ELEGANT DRAMATIC AND SMOKEY

Jodie says, “This style is a perfect choice for a timeless bride.  A classic elegant look would be perfectly achieved by creating a natural soft shaded eye socket; this could be with either a cool grey or a brown toned eyeshadow. Half lashes are a good choice to be able to provide that extra definition without the length and thickness of a full lash. A classic elegant lip colour suggest would be MAC Kinda Sexy or Velvet Teddy lipstick.”

Jemma says, “Keep the gown simplistic; satin or silk dresses work well with this theme. Hair accessories should be minimalistic and stylish, while the make-up should enhance your features. The perfect classic make-up style is to focus on the eyes with not a speck of glitter in sight and a nude lip. The key is to blend everything well so that nothing is overpowering.”

Jemma says, “I love this style; it looks good with any hairstyle and skin type. The look is best suited to people who wear make-up most days and enjoy a false lash. You should probably only go for this look if it’s in keeping with your overall theming and style of dress, such as a fitted gown with some bling. Hair extensions, such as Hollywood waves, will be your friend in achieving glam hair. There are many options, such as clip-ins or fitted weaves, and ensure that they are 100 per cent human hair as synthetic hair burns.”

Jodie says, “For a dramatic and glamorous make-up, consider a dewy or semi matte foundation finish. Add brown or black eyeliner as well as full fluffy lashes. For that added bit of bridal glamour, consider using a metallic, shimmer or glitter colour on the lid. A popular shade at the moment is a rose gold or champagne shade. As a make-up artist I always like to consider the brides accessories or any embellishment on their dress to coordinate the colour of shimmer or highlighter I use.”

Rachel says, “A winged-out smokey eye and nude lip teamed with a strong contour adds that glam look to your make-up, and a sleek hairstyle really shows off your look. Waterproof eyeliner is a must to achieve a smokey eye, and the By Terry Eyeliner pencil is perfect as it’s waterproof and smudge-proof! The style is ideal for a bride who wants an intense look on her day and loves a heavier make-up style!”

Rachel says, “This is the most on-trend style this year, achieved with a laminated-styled brow, bronzed tones, half liner and half lashes to create that cat eye effect! My go-to half-lashes are the PrimaLash Demi lashes, which are so easy to apply! Teamed with a Hollywood wave, and you’re ready to wow your guests!”

Rachel says, “Always do you on your wedding day and be creative! I love these deep copper red tones that went perfectly with my bride’s black gown. Black or deep red lipstick create a moody alternative look that’s sure to make an impact.”

Jemma says, “The modern boho look is such a vibe! The skies are the limit with hair accessories, you could wear an art deco style headband or fresh/dried flowers in your hair. Swap full coverage make-up for light to medium products with plumped satin lips and a fresh glow. Hair looks undone with loose waves and bundles of texture!”

Jodie says, “A boho bride suits gold tones and a soft natural lip shade or an alternative full colour depending on the time of year. Consider using the colour theme of your wedding to incorporate into your make-up. Should you choose sage bridesmaid dresses, a nod to green somewhere in your look would complement the overall harmony of your colour theme. Likewise, this is a great idea when choosing flowers and lip colours.”

Jemma says, “Dark eyes, bloodred lips and lashes are a must for this theme. The possibilities are endless as you can be creative with your outfit and styling, from a corset dress to a coloured gown. For the hair, add texture and height to create volume. Apply glitter into the make-up and coffin-shaped nails to add a bit of sparkle to an alternative bride.”

Jodie says, “Be you as there are no rules. A wedding should be to celebrate you and your partner. It’s the best day of your life and you should feel and look exactly how you want to regardless of traditions - just go for it!”

TOP TIPS TO HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR DREAM LOOK

PREPPING IS KEY!

In the lead-up to your special day, it’s vital to start a skincare routine to ensure you have the perfect base for make-up. After identifying your skin type, it’s time to find the right products to enhance your complexion. Start with a cleanser to remove impurities from the skin morning and night before adding a balancing toner. A serum is ideal for tackling specific concerns such as redness, ageing or blemishes. Follow with a moisturiser to hydrate the surface of your skin to lock in moisture. I would suggest an exfoliating face mask once or twice a week to buff away dead skin cells, leaving behind a soft and flack-free base.

BEAUTY INSPIRATION

Many brides embrace their natural beauty while adding a bit of personality to their look. If you’re stuck with where to start, look online for inspiration. Pinterest is the perfect place to find many ideas and looks that can be tweaked to match your theme or style. Pick a few images to show your hairstylist or make-up artist; they can advise further. Remember, they’re the experts and have plenty of experience.

THE DREAM TEAM

When finding the perfect hairstylist or make-up artist, it’s important to research local companies online. Check out their website as well as social media pages to see examples of their work and what they offer. Ensure to check reviews from previous clients to read all about their experience from start to finish. Remember your budget and theme to ensure the team can meet your expectations. Contact the supplier to discuss details about your wedding and any concerns to ensure you’re the perfect fit.

BRIDAL TRIAL

It’s vital to book a bridal trial once you have found the perfect company; this allows you to meet the team to ensure you get along. The supplier will spend a large chunk of the wedding morning by your side, so you must feel relaxed and happy around them. A trail allows you to try out a few different styles to see what look makes you feel beautiful. We suggest leaving your look to see how well everything lasts throughout the day. Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions or discuss any concerns.

THE NIGHT BEFORE

With nervousness and excitement bubbling up the day before the wedding, it can be tricky to drift off to sleep. But there are a few simple tips that can make all the difference. Firstly, invest in a room or pillow mist with calming scents like lavender or jasmine to help you relax. Avoid scrolling through your phone late at night to allow your brain to switch off, and avoid caffeine at least eight hours before you sleep. It’s also a good idea to avoid spicy foods the day before to ensure your body digests food correctly.

GETTING READY

Create a relaxed atmosphere on the special day while getting ready with loved ones. Why not create a playlist with your favourite songs, wear comfy attire with a robe, fill the room with calming scents and let the experts work their magic? Keep a few make-up products on hand throughout the day for any touch-ups as well as tissues to catch any tears – make sure to tap away tears and not rub to avoid smudging the make-up.

Local experts offer stellar advice on wedding dilemmas

ENTERTAINING THE LITTLE ONES

We’ve just started planning our wedding; what advice can you share to keep the little ones busy?

Childcare is not often one of the first things to be considered when planning a wedding. However, we feel it’s one of your most important decisions. Here are some benefits of having a professional childcare service for your special day.

A wedding unites two families, and a unique service like ours allows the wedding couple to live fully in the moment throughout their beautiful day by letting us be the eyes and ears for their kids.

All children are precious but also a little unpredictable. If there are any mishaps, we’re there to resolve them so the day can run as smoothly as possible.

We’ll attend to all the children’s needs and routines for the duration of the wedding by taking care of all the nappy changes, feeds, naps, bedtimes and keeping them overnight if required.

A wedding can be very overwhelming for adults, even more so for children. Professional childcare can help manage their emotions and keep them engaged while ensuring the children are still fully present and part of the day.

PICTURE-PERFECT PHOTOGRAPHY

We’re very conscious of having our photos taken; what advice can you share with us?

Choose your professional wedding photographer wisely by shopping around and asking for recommendations. Once you find a photographer who’s style you like, contact the supplier to get a feel for them as a person as this is the perfect opportunity to see if you feel comfortable with the photographer. Check out their full galleries rather than just their best photos, and see if they have photographed similar weddings to what you’re planning.

If you’ve booked a documentary wedding photographer like me because you want natural photos, please put your wedding Pinterest board in the bin. Comparison is the thief of joy and causes people not to like their wedding photos. If you have your heart set on a specific photo/look, discuss it with your photographer in advance. It all comes down to choosing your photographer wisely, a style that matches your outcome and a lot of communication with your chosen wedding professional.

Have a timeline for the day and plan travel times between venues if needed before discussing this with your photographer. If things feel rushed and the timings are unrealistic, it will show in photos.

It’s incredibly overwhelming to receive hundreds of images from your

wedding day with the chance that you’re in 75 per cent – go easy on yourself as you won’t look picture-perfect in every single one. You’ll get hundreds of photos for a reason, so you can choose and print off the ones you adore.

Have a pre-wedding shoot, as it’s excellent practice and will help you get to know your photographer while preparing you to receive a photo gallery of yourself.

EXCHANGING VOWS

We want a customised service for our summer wedding and are considering booking a celebrant. How can the supplier make the day more personal?

When creating a personalised service, choose a trained celebrant that you feel connected with. By getting to know you both, the supplier will discover your interests and find inspiration before working their magic to add unique moments designed only for you in a location of your choice. It’s your day, so don’t let traditions dictate! The ceremony is the most essential part of your wedding day and can be easily overlooked – so make it special. You can have a whiskey box ceremony, ring warming on a climbing rope around a spiral of guests, rose exchanges and more. Think outside the box and incorporate your interests. I’ve binge-watched Stranger Things to get into the vibe for script writing and simply short but very personal vows – there are endless possibilities for your big day. You cannot beat the personal touch and moments that are priceless and cherished.

PLANNING SOS

We’ve just started wedding planning; what advice can you share?

You might have had a Pinterest board in production for the past five years, or you don’t know where to begin. A great place to start is to sit down and list what you both adore, such as your favourite date night spots, hobbies, colours, food dishes and places you’ve visited. Forget wedding logistics for now, and let your creative minds wander!

Write down all the people you want to share your special day with to give you an idea of numbers; this will help plan the costs, invites and capacities. Don’t get too caught up in family politics at this stage – a rough idea will do for now!

PICK OF THE BUNCH

We’re looking for the perfect blooms for our wedding; what’s new with dried flowers?

The world of dried flowers is constantly changing and progressing. Gone are the days of brown and tired-looking blooms as we now see such an array of beautiful colours and endless possibilities.

The newest change in this category is using preserved flowers treated with a glycerine solution to capture them at their peak. Preserving the florals keeps them looking soft and fresh without wilting or dying.

The most popular flowers to preserve are roses, which come in various colours. Still, there are now more varieties of preserved flowers, including dahlias, orchids, hydrangeas, carnations and much more. Preserved foliage also adds a beautiful touch to wedding bouquets, allowing for more movement than dried flowers and replicating the look of fresh flowers.

We love combining preserved flowers and foliage with dried flowers and grasses, especially with a touch of pampas for a look that lasts long after the wedding.

Start with a guide expense for each element of your wedding. All these costs should add up to the total wedding budget you have to spend. These will likely change up or down, but you’ll know where to indulge more or cut costs. Your budget should ultimately be a live document showing your total, current expenditures while reminding you which suppliers must be paid what and when.

Working back from your wedding date (or ideal month if you haven’t decided yet), make a rough timeline of decisions and actions that must be made before then. Depending on how long your planning process is, you realise that you have time to make the right decisions for you both – don’t feel pressured into rushing things. However, your timeline will also help set deadlines to ensure you stay on track so your lead-up to the wedding is stress-free. Setting these documents up as separate tabs on one shareable document like GoogleDocs allows you to access everything on multiple devices while ensuring you’re both working from the latest version as it automatically updates. You could also include and allocate a list of needed actions to help equally share the workload.

Watch this space

The experts at WatchPilot advise on how to choose the perfect watch for your big day

Awatch should complement a groom’s suit, however it should also be a timepiece that they will want to wear for years to come. Co-founder of WatchPilot.com, Tim Harrison, has shared with County Wedding Magazines’ grooms’ editor, Melissa Cullen, his expert advice on buying and investing in a timepiece for your big day...

What type of watches are available for grooms-to-be?

The most common watches are quartz, which offer accurate timing with minimal maintenance. Quartz watches also have the most affordable watch movements.

Then there are automatic watches which selfwind using kinetic energy. These store energy by using the movement of your wrist but are typically more expensive than quartz options.

Mechanical watches function via an intricate series of tiny components working together to power the watch. These never need batteries because they require hand-winding to operate. They are super reliable and often very attractive to look at but they do come with a higher price tag than other timepieces.

The final type is the solar watch, which has the ability to convert light energy into electrical energy; they do not require battery replacements and feature a quartz crystal movement for accurate timekeeping.

What are the latest watch trends?

Watches mean so much more than just telling the time; they represent every second of our lives. Some of the most recent style trends include vintage watches with nostalgic elements such as thin cases, minimalistic dials and those with beautiful heritage.

Smart watches are continuing to be a big

trend as people are increasingly investing more in their health and wellbeing, and these timepieces are the best for staying in tune with your body while you meet your fitness goals.  There has also been a huge increase in using bold colours in both jewellery and watches. Blue, green and other pastel colours have been particularly utilised by many brands, producing a variety of new lines and limited-edition pieces.

How can grooms-to-be add a personal touch to their wristwear?

A wedding is a great opportunity to add a sentimental item or two to your wardrobe. Potentially borrow a watch from a family member or someone very close to you. If you are wearing a new watch, consider having it engraved to provide a memory of your special day – this could be a date, initials or a quote.

Appearance is one of the largest factors for grooms when choosing what to wear on their big day, with this in mind, what are your tips for grooms-to-be when selecting a watch to complement their suit?

The most common watch worn with a suit is the dress watch. Consider a simple design with no flourishes. A plain black leather strap and simple dial is understated and refined.

When gifting a watch to a groom, what details should be considered?

Opt for a classic and elegant design. Much like an engagement ring, the watch should stand out, however not be too extravagant. Consider taste and style preferences for example, if he’s sporty look for a classic chronograph.

If you know what colour metal the groom prefers to wear as part of his wardrobe i.e. on belt buckles or cufflinks, then this could be a hint for the colour of watch they may like.

Lastly stay within your budget! Don’t forget that weddings can cost quite a bit of money, so set yourself a price limit and work within it.

How do you suggest cleaning and maintaining a watch?

Whether you wear it every day or just for special occasions, it’s important to make time to give your watch a bit of TLC with a regular clean. This not only keeps it looking good, but it’s also essential for making sure it works well,

keeps time effectively over a long period as well as for general hygiene.

How often you should clean your watch varies. If you wear your watch every day, then a thorough clean, once a month, should keep it free of dirt and grime. If you’re more of an occasional wearer, then a six-monthly deep clean is recommended.

The first step is to take a look at the manual that came with your watch. This should give you a good idea of what you can and can’t do during the cleaning process. Next, you’ll need the proper equipment. A few essential items that will help you give your watch a thorough clean include a microfibre cloth, cleaning fluid, brushes, a watch strap remover tool and a Cape Cod polishing cloth.

If your watch strap is made from leather, fabric or silicone, you’ll need to remove it before you can start cleaning. You’ll also need to push or screw in all the crowns (the winders) and buttons to prevent water or moisture from damaging the internal workings of your watch.

There are some parts of your watch, like the crown and buttons, that might be too small to effectively clean with your cloth, and this is where your cleaning brushes come in. They’re perfect for getting into all the nooks and crannies, including the crown, buttons and inside the lugs. Always spray the cleaning fluid onto the tip of each brush, not the watch itself, and use a dry part of your microfibre cloth to remove any excess.

Now it’s time to buff or polish your watch using your Cape Cod polishing cloth. Not only will this remove any streaks and brighten up the surface of your watch, but it’s also a great way to buff out any fine scratches or blemishes.

HONEYMOON NEWS 83

OF LOVEThe city

Aftera speedy trip on the Eurostar and a leisurely stroll, we arrived at the Shangri-La Paris. With all that Paris has to offer, the actual accommodation you find yourself using can often feel like an afterthought. However, with the history and majesty of the Shangri-La Paris, the hotel is as much a tourist destination as the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe or even the Eiffel Tower. A former home of Prince Roland Bonaparte, overlooking the River Seine, the hotel is centrally located in the 16th arrondissement and seamlessly blends European grandeur with traditional Asian hospitality.

FIT FOR ROYALTY

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a welcoming member of the hotel concierge who checked in our bags while we were given a guided tour. The building is a stunning feat of architecture and the location alone is enough to take your breath away. The hotel has plenty of stand-out features (too many to mention), but the impressive marble-lined swimming pool converted from the former stables, the relaxing spa, state-of-the-art health club and stunning entrance hall are all must-sees.

If you want to relax with a drink in your hand, then you’ll feel right at home in the stunningly decorated Le Bar Botaniste or Les Lounges, both of which offer a friendly and impressive service.

SUITE DREAMS

Catching our breath for a moment, we were shown to our suite. In all honesty, the view of the Eiffel Tower a few hundred feet away, in plain sight of our room, made it very hard to focus on the suite itself for a good few minutes! But after wiping the stardust from our eyes, we discovered that we had been treated to a magnificent space. The biggest bed I’d ever seen, a walk-in wardrobe and a lavish bathroom greeted us; with every aspect of the room designed around that view. The attention to detail was beyond anything I could have imagined with every amenity you could possibly need at your fingertips.

One of my favourite aspects was the balcony, which showed the tower in all its splendour and views of the city at every turn. Sitting there with a cup of tea and homemade macarons was one of the highlights of the trip, and I opted to be out on the balcony every spare moment I had.

EAST MEETS WEST

There are two restaurants at Shangri-La Paris, both of which are beautifully decorated with stand-out food. Shang Palace, where I had the pleasure of dining, is France’s only Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant and what a treat it was! Inspired by Southeast China’s culinary traditions, the restaurant offers authentic Chinese cuisine by chef Samuel Lee.

With so much choice, we were a little lost for words, but thankfully the charming hostess was very helpful and suggested options that she felt we would enjoy.

Every dish was incredible and the food complemented the surroundings perfectly. We started with the chef’s special sashimi; immaculately prepared, it set the standard for what was to follow. The lobster dumplings were a particular favourite of mine and is something I’d eat every day if possible. After several dishes, it was safe to say I was stuffed, but when the dessert arrived, I couldn’t help myself; the rice balls with mixed fruits and whipped cream was delicious and one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime meal, then this is it. It’s been months since we visited, but we still talk about how delicious everything was.

TRUE ROMANCE

With such awe-inspiring surroundings, we couldn’t resist a short stroll over to the Trocadéro and across the Seine to the Eiffel Tower. As beautiful a sight at night as during the day, we couldn’t believe our fortune.

When we eventually headed back to the hotel, we wearily made our way up to our bedroom. The suite had an impressive TV, but it almost felt like a redundancy next to the view from the windows. I’m typically a blackout sleeper, but on this occasion, I had to sleep with the curtains wide open.

After a wonderful night’s sleep, we ordered breakfast to our room and enjoyed it out on our balcony terrace. Barely noticing the brisk February weather, we dined in what felt like the historic heart of Paris. Breakfast was up to the high standards we’d come to expect from the Shangri-La Paris, and when it came to checking out, we felt devastated to be leaving. I can say with absolute certainty that we left with our chi restored and look forward to returning in the near future!

Melissa Cullen reveals why Paris is the perfect honeymoon destination
84

For our second evening in Paris, we had the fortune of being hosted by the Hôtel Dame des Arts. Just a stone’s throw from Notre-Dame, it’s located in the Latin Quarte, which is considered the artistic heart of Paris. The hotel boasts terrace rooms looking out to the Eiffel Tower, a spacious and luxurious rooftop bar, and a charming secret garden courtyard – a gem in the centre of a bustling, metropolitan area.

Entering through a sleek, sliding door, we felt like we’d been invited into an ultra-secretive club. The hotel’s lobby, with its dark motif, stylish sofas and low lighting simultaneously blended Art Deco architecture with the feel of a futuristic nightclub. After checking in, we were shown up to our room, which continued the theme exhibited in the lobby. The architectural vision of the hotel is singular, drawing you completely into the world the owners have created.

SLEEK AND SOPHISTICATED

Our room was the natural extension of the hotel; with all the amenities any couple could desire. Every aspect had been well thought out and cleverly made use of the space available. A sliding, frosted-glass door separated the bedroom from the bathroom area, and the use of lighting and sleek, curved panelling made us feel like we were on the set of a high-budget movie. Our room even had a terrace looking out to the Eiffel Tower, bringing us back into the heart of Paris.

DRINK IT ALL IN

After dropping off our bags, we were given a guided tour of the hotel. The beautifully arranged restaurant and bar giving way through an impressive door to a stunning garden space. A mix of comfortable furniture and grounding flora, the tranquillity of the area makes you forget being mere feet away from the busy streets surrounding the hotel – a true feat. Our next stop was the hotel’s gym. The curved, wooden panelling enveloping the walls of the room is really a sight to behold. The final stop of our tour was the building’s rooftop terrace, and I assure you, our guide had saved the best for last. The terrace looks out in every direction across Paris, choosing a seating location is an almost impossible task!

Major sightseer locations such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame and the Panthéon are all visible from the terrace; with stunning pieces of Parisian history everywhere you look. I can imagine sitting at the bar on a summer’s evening watching the sun go down over one of the most beautiful cities in the world being a truly transformative experience.

FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD

Once our tour had ended, we made our way down to the restaurant for dinner. Starting with a cocktail in hand, the space had a buzzing atmosphere and was full of people laughing and enjoying the splendour. My hubby and I ordered the corn ribs with magic mayo and cotija cheese as a starter and were impressed by the delicious taste and presentation. After examining the menu and struggling to choose just one dish for our main, we asked our friendly waiter for his recommendations. We chose to share the pork ribs in a Roja and Verde sauce, and when it arrived at our table, we were both incredibly excited for what was to come. Every part was wonderful, and although we were sure we wouldn’t be able to fit any dessert, when we saw the menu, we just had to try the chocolate ganache cake with coffee cream. I’m a big sweet person, so the dessert ticked all of my boxes, and I would happily eat it over and over again if I could!

A FOND FAREWELL

After a busy few days exploring the city, it’s safe to say we were in need of some sleep. As soon as my head hit the pillow, I drifted off and awoke never wanting to leave.

When we eventually motivated ourselves to go downstairs for breakfast, everything looked delicious and we couldn’t decide between the continental or cooked option or which of the vast array of drinks to go for. The food was delicious and when it came to checking out, we felt incredibly sad to be leaving and wished we could re-live the experience all over again. We’ll be heading back to Paris soon, and when we do, we’ll definitely be staying at both of these fabulous hotels again.

HONEYMOON REVIEW 85

HAMPSHIRE! Hooray for

the New Forest to find out what makes it such a special spot for mini-mooners

I’ma huge advocate for mini-mooning in the UK (obviously), and since the dark days of lockdown it’s increasingly become the thing to do –short trip post W-day here in Blighty followed by an overseas vacay later on if you’re so inclined. I’m here to tell you that for the former you’ll struggle to find better than the glorious New Forest. I recently visited two incredible hotels in Hampshire, each one perfect for newlyweds in their own way.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

After a picturesque drive through the New Forest spent pony spotting, we pulled up at Grade II listed hotel The Montagu Arms, tucked away in a quiet corner of Beaulieu, our first port of call on this trip. Incidentally, thanks to the rain I never did see a pony! The ample car park is located behind the hotel, so our introduction to the place was via the absolutely delightful grounds, reminiscent of the eponymous childhood story, The Secret Garden. Scattered with water features, beautifully tended flower beds, lawns and cobbled paths wending their way to the entrance, I only wished the weather had been kind enough to let us enjoy them more.

AN IDYLLIC RETREAT

Boasting 22 bedrooms and suites in the main house, with 33 in total within the hotel, each has it’s own unique design and layout, featuring the ultimate combination of comfort and sophistication. Decorated in a chic and charming country-house style, the soft tones and textures used to create a peaceful space were right up my street.

Our home away from home for the night was one of the property’s stunning Courtyard Retreats hidden amongst the aforementioned gardens and converted from the house’s original 1920s chauffeur’s garages. I don’t know what I was expecting, but to call Hazel a “room” would be doing it a gross disservice. With the look of a space taken straight from the pages of Home & Garden magazine, its vast glass façade looked out over the central courtyard allowing the best of the outside in, and

the team have left no stone unturned when it comes to providing all the comforts you could wish for. This even extends to the smallest of details such as the mini torch attached to the retreat’s keyring, to help you find your way safely through the gardens to the hotel at dinner time, or stagger back after a hearty meal and perhaps a wine flight.

Let’s talk about the bathroom! Possibly on a par with the footprint of my entire house, it boasted a roll top bath, twin sinks, walk-in shower, bidet, and the necessary, of course. You’re never going to step on each other’s toes getting ready here, and the SenSpa toiletries were a real treat, as well as a hint of what awaited on day two.

I can’t recommend this spot highly enough to newlyweds. It’s the perfect retreat for a secluded, romantic, relaxing break.

TIME TO DINE

It was time to see if dinner in The Terrace, the hotel’s awardwinning restaurant, was equal to the benchmark laid down by our accommodation. Marketing hails it as offering an unparalleled finedining experience, and I can’t argue with that. Led by executive chef, Dan Burrell, the menus here champion seasonality and fresh, hyper-local Hampshire ingredients, including produce from the hotel’s own bountiful organic kitchen garden.

Looking at the menu it was a difficult choice, but ultimately I opted for the 42-day aged beef tartare with horseradish and onion purée to start; followed by Cornish red mullet with champagne sauce, artichoke, mussels, and pink fir potatoes. I finished my meal with a delicious selection of local cheese and biscuits. Every mouthful of the entire meal was an explosion of flavour and culinary discovery, while the knowledgeable and charming sommelier, Paulo, selected the perfect English wine to go with it – a Kentish Chapel Down Bacchus, plus a cheeky taste of Norfolk’s Winbirri Bacchus. No evening would be complete without a nightcap, so we headed to the tranquil lounge for a Brandy Alexander, which I’ve since decided is my new favourite cocktail!

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Incredibly sad to leave the hotel and it’s charming, friendly and helpful team, we set off after a hearty breakfast and hit the road again. Our destination was a mere six miles away in beautiful Brockenhurst: Carey’s Manor Hotel, The Montagu’s sister establishment. Although downhearted to see the latter in my rear-view mirror, it didn’t take me long to turn my thoughts to the planned day ahead spent in SenSpa at my next destination – the excitement was back!

It’s worth pointing out at this juncture that residents of The Montagu Arms can enjoy complimentary access to SenSpa, including it’s indoor pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and gym, with treatments and access to the hydrotherapy pool available at an additional cost. The kind folk there even offer free transfers. The choice of where you decide to rest your head is, purely down to your personal style. Where The Montagu Arms is intimate, boutique, tranquil, and secluded; Carey’s Manor offers 18th-century grandeur, vibrancy and a myriad of spaces to enjoy from the aforementioned spa, to its three restaurants, including modern British brasserie Cambium, traditional French bistro Le Blaireau, and authentic Thai restaurant Zen Garden.

PERFECTLY PAMPERED

On arrival, I wasted no time whatsoever in heading straight to the awardwinning SenSpa. A world-class Thai spa focusing on holistic wellness, inspired by ancient Eastern rituals, it was unlike any I’d been to before, so I was interested to see what the experience would have in store. We’d been treated to Hydrotherapy Pool access, and I was like a kid in a sweetshop. But where to begin? Across two floors, this state-of-the-art facility features the pool itself, crystal steam room, ice room, experience showers, herbal sauna and so much more. Adding this to your visit is something I would most definitely encourage as it’s not to be missed. My treatment was booked for the afternoon – a relaxing, full-body Thai massage using SenSpa’s very own natural products, which lifted me away on a cloud of aroma and ultimate relaxation. My therapist was incredible and really listened to me when I talked to her about problem areas and the amount of pressure I’d like. I headed back to the pool with a spring in my step, feeling revitalised and light as a feather.

There’s a wide range of spa packages available, so there’s bound to be something to suit you both and help you unwind following the highs of W-day.

BON APPETIT

By the time I managed to tear myself away from the calming waters of

SenSpa, there was just enough time to pop back to our gorgeous suite to brush up for dinner. Mum and I were thrilled by its two bathrooms, meaning we could both get ready in double quick time without fighting for mirror or sink space! The hotel has 77 bedrooms and suites all designed with tranquillity in mind. Some Manor Rooms in the main house feature a four-poster bed – honeymoon romance goals. Meanwhile, The Garden Rooms are more contemporary, each with a balcony or patio overlooking the grounds. The newly-designed suites offer a luxurious escape with features such as a roof terrace, spacious living area and chic, marble bathroom.

Our table was booked in Le Blaireau, which promised a menu of regional French food. Given it’s location at the other side of this vast hotel, and the fact the rain still hadn’t let up, we were happy indeed to hear that we didn’t need to set foot outside and could cheerfully wend our way through the cosy corridors to reach the restaurant. As I pushed open an unassuming door at the end of a corridor, I let out a gasp of delight. Was this the Hampshire equivalent of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe? It was as though I’d stepped into the cobbled streets of Paris with the iconic Art Nouveau Metro sign in front of me and shop fronts complete with awning to my right. Past a vintage Citroen DS, lies the main restaurant, every bit the classic French bistro of a bygone era. So... much... fun!

The menu here is humble and indulgent – fine by me – I was ravenous after such a tiring day in the spa! I dined on a soufflé au fromage, a tasty burger from the specials board and crème brulee, all washed down with a glass of French wine, before going to bed full, relaxed, completely content, and dreaming of those illusive New Forest ponies.

Riverside romance

TheMitre Hampton Court could not be placed in a more romantic location; just a five-minute walk from Hampton Court Palace and nestled on the bank of the River Thames. So, when my other half and I whizzed down to the home county of Surrey for a night away around Valentine’s we had high expectations for our stay.

Before checking in, we busied ourselves in The Mute Swan, a pub conveniently placed next door, for a few hours. With the February sun shining down, much stronger than expected, we couldn’t have started our visit in higher spirits. It’s here I left Daniel, basking in the spring weather, while I headed to the Pamper Room, inside Mitre Hampton Court, to experience a life changing massage from the in-house masseuse, Alex.

The combination of soothing music, Alex’s expert touch and delightful spa products from Lola’s Apothecary (www.lolasapothecary.com) meant my hour of tranquillity flew by and I left feeling refreshed and renewed. Whilst my treatment was designed to instil calm and correct energy imbalances, there was a variety of other therapies to alleviate both mind and body. The Stimulating Treatment designed to eliminate toxins and encourage lymph drainage is perfect for those looking to reduce swelling and improve circulation in their bodies.

I found my partner, where I left him, feeling like a new woman, and we checked into our room for the night. The river-facing Royal Rooms are aptly named as they are indeed fit for royalty. Named individually after historic characters who have famously influenced our part of the world, they boast stunning décor, king-sized beds, complimentary toiletries and – the standout feature of any room – a huge free-standing bathtub. These suites truly are a welcoming space for mini-mooners where you can leave your worries at the door.

The interiors throughout this boutique hotel are certainly breathtaking. The old building has all the grandeur of an English country house, but the modern, inner-city inspired furnishings give the place a kitschy charm. The perfectly curated style looks as though it’s jumped straight out of your Pinterest board, and you’ll end your visit with a strong desire to redesign your living room!

After unloading our bags and freshening up – and admittedly indulging in the orange and ginger liqueur gifted to us in our room – we were more than ready for dinner. Our evening meal took place in the

Mitre’s 1665 Riverside Brasserie. With a centrepiece bar, wine room, and gorgeous al fresco terraces perfect for the warmer months, the restaurant is rich in atmosphere.

We were lucky enough to sample a delicious selection from both the seasonal menu and house specials. Starting with a local Berkshire venison tartare and the warming truffle and Jerusalem artichoke soup, this was a wonderful indication of the restaurant’s dedication to combining locally and worldly sourced delights.

Moving on to our mains we were thrilled with both the pan-fried salmon and beetroot risotto, the fish pairing wonderfully with the French Sancerre our waiter was kind enough to recommend us. But the real star of the show from the whole evening was the duck fat chips loaded with Wiltshire truffle hollandaise – seriously naughty and certainly calorific but they tasted so good it doesn’t even bare thinking about.

The wait staff throughout our entire meal were friendly, welcoming and reassuring – making all the difference to our experience. We ended the night toasting to our stay with two – equally delicious as they were splendid looking – espresso martinis.

After dinner, drifting off to the land of nod was easy, and we had a wonderful night’s sleep.

My other half and I both share a great love for breakfast foods and are known to spend all week searching for the best brunch spot for a Sunday morning, so our morning meal the following day was arguably one of the things we were most excited for. It’s no understatement to say we were certainly not disappointed. At the buffet you could find a huge selection of delicious pastries, cereals and fresh fruit that made your mouth water just from the sight of it. The barista-made coffee was the perfect pick-meup to start the day, especially whilst enjoying the famous river-side views.

New from The Mitre team this spring, is The Coppernose café. With more of the superb breakfast, brunch and lunch options in a relaxed environment, it’s perfect to pop in if you’re in the area.

If you’re planning a romantic night away to escape from the stress of wedding planning or looking for the perfect staycation destination for your mini-moon, The Mitre Hampton Court is undoubtedly the place for you. I couldn’t fault my stay and I know it won’t take any convincing at all to get my other half to consider a second trip there.
