Tilgate Park has long been known as a top visitor destination in the heart of the south. Fans come from far and wide to enjoy more than 200 acres of woodland, gardens, lakes and even a mini zoo. Now this beautiful venue has opened its doors for unique weddings.

THE

WALLED GARDEN

Playing host to peaceful formal gardens and ponds, an evergreen hedge maze, events arena and cafe, the Walled Garden is the perfect location for celebrations like yours.

Entering the magnificent tall wooden gates of the Walled Garden, it’s like stepping into a secret garden, being greeted by a 40-metre long pergola of beautiful wisteria, roses, clematis and grape vines. The Family Garden within has been transformed into a magical private garden, able to seat up to 100 guests either side of the aisle leading to a wooden arbour where the ceremony can take place.

Afterwards, it’s the ideal location to serve your guests with some pre-reception drinks whilst you take the opportunity to explore the rest of the park with your photographer. For something different, animal lovers may want to visit the Nature Centre to take photos with the fun-loving meerkats or adorable goats.

EVENTS ARENA

At the other end of the pergola, the Arena is the perfect location to host a wedding breakfast and/or evening reception in our brand new marquee. Our 24m x 12m marquee is fully lined with ivory drapes, has chandeliers, fairy lights, and a hard floor which is carpeted. It also includes an amazing Zone Array speaker system which provides fantastic sound for dancing but also ensures your guests can chat amongst themselves comfortably whilst sitting only a few metres away.

Outside the marquee the Arena, which measures more than 1,000 square metres, provides ample room for extra entertainment like giant garden games, a mobile bar or catering and it’s conveniently located next to the evergreen hedge maze where both young and old enjoy finding each other around each twist and turn.

Although there’s no guarantee that the sun will shine, we have the advantage of also having The Barn, which is licensed, so you can choose to move indoors if you prefer.

Well, first things first: Happy New Year. Is it still OK to say that in February? The last time I spoke to you was in December, so I think so! Now, safely in 2023 you’re either on your next milestone to W-day or finally, you’re only months away. And, of course, there are those of you with a shiny, new ring on you finger – massive congratulations to you. Allow me to welcome you to the wonderful world of wedding planning. It’ll be a riot, you’re gonna love it!

So, whether you’re putting your best foot forward and making your first tentative steps into the world of weddings, or you’re well on your way and looking to refine the finer points, we’ve got something for you this issue. The region’s wedding suppliers have got their fingers on the pulse of 2023’s wedding trends and have shared their predictions with us in our Hot Topic and Beauty Q&A specials. Plus, if you’ve chosen your dress already you might want to set your sights on the accessories. In which case, don’t miss our jewellery and accessories feature from page 61 where we’ve gathered together some ideas on adding the finishing touches to some of this year’s fashion forward designs.

Those who’ve been there, done that and bought the T-shirt never fail to inspire. That’s why we’ve brought you another bevvy of beautiful real weddings to marvel at. Quite apart from the fabulous ideas they’re sure to offer, if you’re anything like me you’ll equally enjoy the genuine love stories they share. They never fail to make me smile.

WHERE THE WILDFLOWERS GROW

Launching in May is Emma Dodi Cakes’ new Wild Flowers macaron collection, featuring hand-painted designs inspired by the great gardens of Sussex. Paying homage to local glorious gardens such as Great Dixter, Glyndebourne, Charleston and Gravetye, this stunning collection celebrates the delicate beauty of English wild flowers in summer. BRIGHTON BELLE

Brighton Perfume offers a window into real vegan perfumery. Having developed a new, contemporary way of making plant-based perfumes, its vision is to revolutionise the industry. Born out of the ideology of the 70s and 90s fashion and music scene the local brand aims to create a new golden age of perfume. The business’ founder created a machine to spin vegan elixirs in oil, not alcohol, eliminating the need to filtrate using animal products and leaving no wastage.

The brand has recently launched 22 new vegan perfumes in three collections, which although forward-thinking recognise the fact that scent is nostalgic, bringing back memories that make you feel alive and connected. TOP-NOTCH PAMPERING

East Sussex National Golf Resort and Spa has been revealed by Spabreaks.com as Sussex’s top spa, totalling 27.12 per cent of all bookings made in the county this year. In second and third place, situated close by in the same region was Alexander House Hotel Utopia Spa and Chakra Spa at Crown Plaza Felbridge Gatwick; with Ockenden Manor and South Lodge following close behind in fourth and fifth place on the list.

So, just why has East Sussex National proven to be so popular with spagoers? All rooms in this contemporary hotel overlook either the resort’s 18-hole championship golf course or the lush green South Downs countryside, setting the scene for a relaxing weekend getaway. To keep in shape, the hotel’s Health Club runs yoga, pilates and studio cycling classes, after which a refreshing swim in the indoor heated pool will be just the tonic. Besides an aromatherapy room and monsoon shower, the main event here is the luxury treatments, which range from an invigorating massage to a relaxing facial.

SKY’S THE LIMIT

Your Sussex Wedding editor Kelly Andrews caught up with Lydia Champion, event sales manager at the Brighton i360 (https://brightoni360.co.uk) to find out what a typical day looks like for her.

When a couple books their wedding day at Brighton i360, what’s next for you?

It’s great to meet them and find out exactly how they envision their big day. From there, I can offer recommendations and feedback. As a group, we tour the site and discuss the style and design that will bring their vision to life.

Planning a wedding from an events point of view involves so many steps from outsourcing suppliers and entertainment, to creating a menutasting session and looking at aisle music. We have great connections with our recommended suppliers and hotels, so we support local businesses where we can.

For many of our clients it’s their first wedding, so we even advise them on the small things such as sending out save-the-date cards. It’s a really exciting time for the client and it’s great to be a part of that.

What does a wedding day at the venue look like for you?

We have two licensed event rooms including the giant glass pod that

DATES FOR THE DIARY

While you’re planning your 2023 diaries, we recommend popping in some time to visit local wedding fairs. They’re a great way to meet potential suppliers and start assembling your W-day team. Here are our suggestions to keep you busy for the next few months!

showcases unfolding views of Brighton as it travels to the grand height of 450ft. Plus, our event rooms open onto West Beach and our glass capsule sits above the iconic seafront, so thanks to our stunning location, a wedding at Brighton i360 captures that vibrant Brighton vibe in all its glory. We also have a huge upper deck, which is fantastic in the spring and summer months for pre- and post-ceremony drinks.

I’m always really busy making the day perfect to suit the brief, whether that’s dressing the room or glass pod, or meeting and greeting guests.

What’s the highlight of the job for you?

Being able to provide couples with the wedding of their dreams and seeing their excitement ahead of and then throughout their wedding is so joyous. I love being creative and offering my recommendations for design and colour schemes. It’s great taking a theme and watching it come to life. I also love seeing the excitement of the guests as they travel to 450ft – which for many is the first time they have experienced the pod. The excitement really adds to the atmosphere!

What are your wedding trend predictions for 2023?

Couples are looking for different experiences for their big day, something to make their wedding stand out and leave lasting memories for their guests. Backdrops are so important, which is why many people choose to marry in the clouds.

TRADING BOUNDARIES

01825 790 200 | www.tradingboundaries.com/weddings

Established 27 years ago, Trading Boundaries is one of the UK’s leading importers of Indian furniture, award-winning live music venue, fully-licensed cafe-bar and the world’s first fine art gallery dedicated to the work of iconic album design artist Roger Dean. This luxuriously refurbished Grade II listed Georgian coaching inn is situated in stylish surroundings with vistas of fields and woodlands set against landscaped grounds providing a stunning heritage location for your countryside wedding.

THE “I DOS”

The venue is fully licensed for ceremonies, but can also offer celebrant-led ceremonies in the bespoke Indian Marquees, Indian Temple Trellis or out under the canopy of 200-year-old oaks on the landscaped lawns.

For indoor “I dos” the venue is able to offer use of the charming, atmospheric restaurant that can accommodate up to 180 of your loved ones. It features elegant Indian decoration, fairylit archways and glorious Georgian details.

If you prefer a church wedding however, Trading Boundaries is located within four short miles of seven popular local churches.

DINE UNDER CANVAS

Designed by the venue’s team and handcrafted in India, the two

marquees offer enchanting spaces for mingling with guests and enjoying the wedding breakfast. They feature gold block-print ceiling linings and an abundance of voile curtains, Jodhpur tassels, carved wooden finials and charming decorative hand-printed patterns.

The marquees can be decorated individually and divided with panels for extra atmosphere or left open to create a single event space. Depending on the weather, you can leave the sides to float in a gentle breeze or have them open. Both are weatherproof and well-lit in the evenings.

Each marquee offers comfortable seating for up to 90 loved ones and together host up to 180 including the top top table.

CELEBRATE IN STYLE

The newly renovated restaurant is sprinkled with fairylights and beautifully decorated Indian archways, providing intimate and enchanting surroundings for your evening reception for up to 180 guests. With dedicated bars run by friendly and knowledgeable staff, a sunken fairylit dancefloor, and a stage area with theatre-quality sound and lighting, you’ll want for nothing on the night.

A PLACE TO REST YOUR HEAD

There are eight boutique hotel rooms on site for you and your guests to stay in over the course of your wedding. Set in the grounds each room is en-suite and delightfully decorated in fusion Indian style.

Historical gem

ALL SAINTS THE OLD CHAPEL

01323 643 181 | www.allsaintschapeleastbourne.org

All Saints Chapel is a beautiful and rather well-hidden venue. Situated close to the sea in the picturesque ancient village of Meads, Eastbourne, this is a majestic English architectural masterpiece designed by Henry Woodyer in 1874. The All Saints Grade II listed Old Gothic chapel is deconsecrated and fully-licensed for civil partnerships, events and functions.

SETTING THE SCENE

The venue boasts four parts. First, the entrance reception, which is a modern, light and airy addition where your reception drinks are served. Next is Harriot’s Hallway, an ancient cloister named after the founding

and selfless Sister Harriot Byron Brown. It’s used as the pre-nuptial area for the bride and her bridesmaids to relax, hidden from view, before their grand entrance. You then find yourself in the open area of the stairwell complete with wrought iron bannisters and gothic windows. You’re free to add your own personal touches anywhere you wish, but this is the perfect area to go to town! Finally, The Great Hall. Here the Minton-tiled 60-foot aisle awaits with ever-changing bejewelled light flooding in. An elegant bar area stands beside hand-carved pew ends in the near corner of the banquet hall tempting guests to sample some of the 25 different gins on offer.

WHERE TO WED

Both ceremonies and celebrations take place in The Great Hall, which can accommodate 120 seated and 200 standing. While the team expertly turn the space around from one use to the other you and your loved ones can enjoy canapés and prosecco in the garden and reception area.

BIGNOR PARK

07798 807 043 | www.bignorpark.co.uk

The 1,100-acre, privately-owned Bignor Park Estate is situated in stunning surroundings at the foot of the magnificent South Downs. Weddings at here are family-run and limited to 12 couples per year, so the team will go the extra mile to make sure your planning and day run smoothly, while you and your guests are relaxed and excited to have a great time. What’s more, you’ll have access to the venue two days before your wedding, so everything can be just how you want and there’s no rush to get things ready.

THE “I DOS”

The venue is licensed to hold ceremonies and partnerships outside in the romantic Greek Loggia. This is a roofed, stone porch beneath which you can exchange your vows. Your 150 guests will be seated on the lawn in front surrounded by the beautiful gardens. Alternatively, the Coach Store of the Stables provides the ideal setting

for those choosing an indoor ceremony, with space for 80 nearest and dearest.

AL FRESCO CELEBRATIONS

Bignor Park has several options available for hosting receptions. The South Lawn provides a gorgeous backdrop for wedding photos and reception drinks, with unrivalled views of quintessential West Sussex countryside and the South Downs. The spacious lawn delivers a relaxed and welcome change of pace to your day post-ceremony or on arrival from church.

The Stables are a charming, rustic complex of rooms dating from the late 18th century that have been lovingly restored to their original condition. The five rooms are situated around a large cobbled courtyard on one side, and on the opposite side the Coach Store opens out through French doors onto the Quadrangle – a secluded walled garden providing an indoor/outdoor space for dining, drinks or evening relaxation.

The Croquet Lawn is deceptively large, so if you’re planning a tipi tent or marquee wedding reception this is the hidden gem you need. It can accommodate up to 250 guests under canvas from one of the venue’s trusted marquee suppliers.

Doris and George’s finishing touches were inspired by their Croatian and Greek heritage

31 REAL
WEDDINGS

Doris and George met for the first time virtually, through a mutual friend on Facebook, before bumping into each other at a music festival – their first encounter #IRL. Fast forward to a family holiday in Cyprus where the now couple were visiting a wine festival, and George proposed. It was the date of his late grandma’s birthday, so this was a hugely significant and meaningful choice.

The duo decided on Montague Farm as their all-important venue thanks to its gorgeous outdoor spaces and breathtaking views. “It’s a hidden gem in East Sussex,” Doris says.

The date was set for 20th August, 2022. Read on as the bride tells us more...

SETTING THE SCENE

To complement their venue Doris and George opted for a rustic theme with a blush pink palette. Each element and finishing touch was selected to bring the theme together including the place and table names, which were carved from wood. The centrepieces featured three cylindrical vases containing a floating candle, which were sat on log slices.

The big-day flower arrangements included a mixture of dried and fresh blooms, the colour of which reflected the bridesmaids’ dresses. Some were used to decorate the four-tier wedding cake, which was also adorned in a carved, wooden topper. The ceremony backdrop too was created using fresh flowers, which tied in with the bride’s bouquet.

The couple wanted to reflect their heritage in their big day and gifted friends and family wedding favours inspired by Croatia and Greece, where their families are from. They served Greek meze for the wedding breakfast and everyone tucked in to a hog roast in the evening.

LOOKING THE PART

Doris looked stunning in a Stella York gown, style number 7118. “I loved the fitted style of the dress as well as the lace, which tied in with the bridesmaids’ dresses, and the train was beautiful,” the bride shares. She accessorised with a blush pink hair clip from Lace and Favour, along with a necklace and earring set. The finishing touch was a long veil, which she wore during the day.

George wore a grey three-piece Hugo Boss suit, which differed from the groomsmen’s. The bridesmaids meanwhile were resplendent in long, pleated blush dresses adorned in lace at the top.

TIME TO CELEBRATE

Guests were kept amused with oversized garden games. “We set these up mainly to entertain the children as we had around 15 there on the day. However, the adults also wanted to join in the fun and it

32

got very competitive,” Doris remembers fondly.

In the evening, plenty of fun was had in the photo booth and a saxophonist played alongside the DJ, proving a great hit and a memorable way to end the day. One of the couple’s highlights was the Greek dancing that everyone got involved with. The bride says, “It was so much fun and it really got the party started.” In fact this wasn’t the only dancing guests got involved with as the best man’s daughter decided to join the newlyweds in their first dance!

THE GETAWAY

Doris and George headed off to Crete on honeymoon, booking it last minute before they had to go back to work. “It was a beautiful hotel. We had a swim-up room and definitely made the most of the all-inclusive cocktails,” Doris shares. At the moment they’re planning another, ultimate honeymoon, which is still in the works.

rustic

Jess and Matt chose a blush, sage green and gold palette for rustic nuptials with a touch of class Images courtesy of Joanna Cleeve Photography

Jess and Matt met through Tinder, despite the fact neither of them had much faith in it initially and were extremely cautious using it. “We met up one afternoon in a local pub. Once we got talking time flew by and before we knew it, we’d been there for hours,” Jess remembers. So, they decided to extend their afternoon date into the evening and stayed for dinner. Jess had been gone so long her mum had started to worry, especially since the mobile signal at the pub was non-existent. So, unbeknownst to them, she turned up at the pub to check her daughter was ok, and peering through the window was able to see the start of this budding romance. “Luckily we didn’t see her, otherwise we may have a different story,” Jess laughs.

We fast forward three-and-a-half years now and the happy couple were out for a stroll along their local beach. On reaching the family’s beach hut, which has been handed down through generations and holds many special memories, Matt suggested they take a photo. He then got down on one knee and presented Jess with a beautiful engagement ring. “It was a complete surprise with loads of screaming and tears,” Jess tells us.

The pair visited Southdowns Manor for the first time on a beautiful sunny day and the setting took their breath away. “When we stood on the terrace where we’d marry, we looked at each other and became emotional knowing this was the perfect spot,” Jess explains. They were hooked and booked their wedding date, 2nd September, then and there.

Here, the bride gives us the lowdown on W-day...

37 REAL WEDDINGS

We were joined by our cockapoo, Vinny, for the ceremony and part of the reception. We bought him a little outfit that matched the groomsmens’ and it’s safe to say he was the star of the show!

We were very keen to get married outside on the terrace but the weather kept changing. We were delighted when the sun came out and our al fresco ceremony went ahead.

We were both surprised at how emotional we were.

We really enjoyed the moments after our ceremony when we had the chance to greet our guests and start celebrating. We felt more relaxed then, and full of joy.

Matt wore a dark blue, three-piece suit with a pale pink tie and pocket square. His buttonhole featured a white rose. His groomsmen wore twopiece suits with sage green ties and white pocket squares.

38

The table plan and other signs were made using mirrors. The idea was to achieve a rustic yet elegant and classy look. We spray painted the frames gold and added white writing. We also bought artificial floral garlands to wrap around it.

Three of the bridesmaids wore pale pink, satin dresses, while the other three wore sage green in the same style.

I wore Rosa by Morilee. I was in love with it from the moment I tried it on. I wouldn’t have picked it out myself, but Amy at Whyte Weddings suggested I give it a chance.

To Have and To Hire in Billingshurst supplied our centrepieces. We chose gold, rectangular plinths with candles and fresh flowers in white and pink with greenery including eucalyptus.

Our beautiful cake was made by our lovely friend, Julia. After many intense tasting sessions, we selected chocolate and lemon. The threetier bake was decorated with a stunning floral arrangement matching our palette.

39 REAL WEDDINGS

We danced the night away with our guests and kept the party going in one of the rooms until 4am!

For favours we provided everyone with sparklers with a personalised tag attached. We used them in the evening, which looked magical.

We were both blown away by how accommodating and kind Lia, our planner at Southdowns Manor, was. She went above and beyond and made sure we were always comfortable and happy. It was like having a close friend organising our day!

Matt and I aren’t known for our dancing, so we were nervous about hitting the dancefloor. We carefully choreographed a short routine to keep us from flapping on the day. Our guests loved it and were very impressed.

Two doors down

Lauren and James added Disney touches to their styling as a nod to their fairytale engagement

Images courtesy of HS Photography | Video courtesy of Sussex Videographer

Lauren and James grew up on the same street, just two doors apart and he’d call her “the girl next door but one.” Lauren remembers: “I was attracted to James the moment I saw him in his tracksuit!” Whenever she was out front James would also emerge and pretend he was doing something with his car as an excuse to see her. Likewise, she’d pop out for a sun-bathing session whenever she knew he was in the garden – “I actually don’t enjoy the sun one bit,” Lauren laughs. Eventually, they both plucked up the courage the speak to one another, they exchanged numbers and Facebook accounts and love blossomed from there.

James proposed at Disneyland Paris next to the fairytale castle. It was

timed to perfection just as the parade was about to start and they posed for a rare picture. Just as Lauren was about to move away, she turned to see James on one knee. “I blubbed like a baby and loads of people in the crowd clapped for us. It was very special,” she remembers.

Driving towards Farbridge for their first visit, the couple couldn’t believe how big it was. Luckily, they got to view the venue on a day that another wedding was being held, so they were able to see it in all it’s glory and instantly fell in love. “It was beautifully set up, the lighting was perfect, it was amazing. I’m so happy we went with it,” Lauren tells us.

The date was set for 8th April, 2022. Here the bride tells us more...

REAL WEDDINGS 43

The start of the day was relaxing for me, getting pampered, but as the ceremony drew nearer and I saw my dad in his kilt, I became a bag of nerves! Our photographer, Hayley, asked for a picture of the special moment and she certainly captured the emotions perfectly. James’ morning was a bit stressful though, trying to get himself and our two boys sorted in time, but he got there that’s the main thing.

I wore a beautiful ivory gown called Rachael by Romantica. It had a sweetheart neckline and was adorned in lace. The back was open, but it had a detachable accessory that clipped onto the top of the dress covering most of my back. I loved the shape the gown gave me and it was so comfortable. I tried on so many, but this one gave me butterflies!

James wore a light grey suit, which complemented the blush in our colour palette well. Our two sons were pageboys and they wore different suits but also in light grey. James’ younger brother who is in the army acted as best man and wore his dark green uniform.

One of the highlights of the day for me was seeing our sons in their suits – I cried before I even got down the aisle when I saw them and how grown up they looked! Then, seeing James standing there waiting for me, I wanted to run down the aisle to him.

Unfortunately, the company we’d paid a deposit to for our wedding favours went out of business due to the pandemic, so we were left to sort our own with just five weeks to go. We bought some princess carriage cut out boxes and filled with mints and love heart marshmallows.

44

Our beautiful cake, made by my talented auntie and her friend, was exactly what we wanted and was decorated with blush roses to complement our palette. She too created the bridesmaids’ bouquets and other flowers around the venue. We were very lucky to have her help.

James hired a Campervan called Hector for himself, our two sons and his best man, allowing them to arrive in style. The service was amazing, he even stayed until after the ceremony so we could have some photos inside.

James made the table plan from a Perspex sheet, copper pipe and rope using his handy-work skills. We used our Cricut machine to cut out Disney princess silhouettes in black vinyl and listed guests names underneath according to their themed table name. Our wooden love heart welcome sign placed in the main doorway was also handmade by James. We loved it that much we now have it hanging in our living room and plan to add some of our wedding photos.

Our bridesmaids wore blush, one-shoulder dresses, Eden from Wed2B’s infinite range.

Our centrepieces and my bouquet were created by Anita who owns Little Florist in Bognor Regis. We supplied the glass vases and she made the arrangements for them and delivered them to Farbridge the day before.
REAL WEDDINGS 45
Guests’ place names were Scrabble tiles, which they could take home.

We entertained our guests with an amazing DJ, who went above and beyond for us. Included in the package was a magic mirror with lots of props. Everyone really enjoyed putting on wigs and holding up funny signs to get some great pictures. It was an even bigger hit with the kids, they loved it and wouldn’t leave its side!

We also had a well-stocked sweet table with bags and scoops, which guests from youngest to oldest loved.

I know it’s cheesy, but we were both in a bubble of love all day. It was such an amazing feeling finally being husband and wife after having to postpone the wedding three times due to Covid and the very sad death of James’ dad. It was bittersweet and a long time coming.

Doing a father/daughter dance with my dad really made the day extra special, before being handed to my husband by him one very last time. Another significant touch was James’ dad’s memory bear, which got pride of place on a table. It was like he was there in spirit and that was important to us both.

Local wedding florists offer oodles of floral inspiration based on popular colour schemes

Surely, it’s the gentle, romantic nature of flowers as well as their long-standing association with love that make them such a key feature at weddings. There are so many ways to incorporate them in your venue styling as well as your attire that you can choose to go all out or keep it minimal. Not only the style of your floral displays but also their palette can bring the overall look and vibe together. Some couples have even taken inspiration for their entire colour theme from inspiring Pinterest pics of beautiful wedding blooms.

Here, the county’s incredible floral designers have helped us to put together a swoon-worthy moodboard based on the most enduringly popular modern wedding palettes. Look out for Pantone colour of the year for 2023, Viva Magenta, which makes an appearance. We hope you’ll find something here to fall in love with.

Calling all animal lovers

We’ve put together the ultimate guide to pets at weddings to help you create the perfect day

Ifyou’re anything like us at County Wedding Magazines, your pets mean the world to you and are an extended part of the family. Many couples choose to include their fur babies in annual celebrations, so why not do the same on your special day? Here are some top tips for creating the perfect wedding alongside your furry friend.

WHAT TO CONSIDER

Having your pet by your side during your wedding might be an exciting thought, but consider how they might react in new environments or larger crowds – you won’t want to stress them out.

If you think involving your fur baby might not be the best idea, fear not as there are plenty of ways to feature your pet on the day. One of our favourite ways is bringing them along to your engagement shoot and using the images on the wedding invites or around your reception space. Why not incorporate an illustration of your pet throughout the stationery, such as on your menus, table names, signage and table plan? You can even have animal-shaped candles or elegant ornaments of animals on the tables – let your imagination run wild and have fun with it!

GROOMER HAS IT

As you’ll be looking back on your wedding images for years to come, it’s essential to ensure everyone looks their best – including your furry friend. So, book your pet into the groomers or take some time before the day to pamper your pet and get them big-day ready. Why not purchase a tux, bow tie, bandana, floral collar, wreath or floral harness to ensure they look ohso smart? Just remember, practice makes perfect! So, get your pet used to wearing any new accessories around the house before the day so they can feel comfortable. Many couples are opting for floral or pearl leads that look stunning and fashionable. If you’re opting for floral accessories, ensure the blooms aren’t toxic to your pet.

If you’re worried pre-wedding nerves will kick on the day, ensure you take some time with your pet that morning to help you relax.

THE PERFECT SETTING

The first and most essential step when planning to have your pet at your wedding is to find a pet-friendly venue. Some venues allow pets throughout the entire site, while others only allow them outside; although this won’t be an issue if you’re having an al fresco celebration it’s best to check the policies they have in place.

Consider the spaces when looking around a property. If you have older pets, keep in mind the flooring as you won’t want them struggling to get around if the floors are slippery. Look for an area where you can create a cosy den where they can relax and escape the crowd if needed. Pack some of their favourite toys and blankets for some added comfort on the day. We suggest taking your pet to the venue before the wedding if possible, so they can familiarise themselves with the surroundings. Remember that your chosen venue might ask for an extra fee or a security deposit to ensure there’s no damage left behind.

54

PET SITTER

Your pet will need a chaperone at the wedding as the day itself will be very busy. So, take some of the weight off your shoulders by hiring a pet sitter or having a loved one on hand to help look after your furry friend. Have a chat with them before the wedding to plan feeding times, exercise and where they need to be throughout the day. They’ll also offer extra support and can jump in when needed. Not only will your pet be in great hands, but they’ll get plenty of care and the attention needed throughout the day.

If you’re on the fence about having your pet attend your wedding, why not have someone bring them along to just the photo shoot away from all the guests? That way, you can take a lovely walk and still see them on your special day – think about the cute images that would be captured!

BON A-PET-TREAT

One of our favourite ways to feature your pet is by incorporating them in the cake topper, so they’ll be the centre of attention and a talking point amongst guests. Many companies can create the pieces using clay or wood, so you can treasure the topper for years to come. Or why not have cute favours such as pet-shaped biscuits or donate to an animal shelter on behalf of your guests? Many organisations can print cards or provide pins as a thank you to share with guests.

If you have leftover cake on the day, why not have doggie bags with an illustration of your pooch for a nice touch? We also love the idea of a treat-to-go station with some tasty treats and custom bags for guests to take home to their animals or share with other pets attending the day. If you’re having a signature cocktail, a fun idea is naming the drink after your companion.

BE PREPARED

Let guests know ahead of the wedding that your pet will be attending the day on your RSVPs or wedding website. That way, anyone with allergies or phobias has time to step forward and arrangements can be made to suit everyone. Loved ones can take extra measures by taking Antihistamines or keeping their distance throughout the day. You’ll also want to inform your photographer so they can prepare and plan some stunning shoots with your best friend – this is particularly important if you have a large pet such as a horse, llama or donkey.

SPECIAL ROLE

Ask any pet owner and they’ll tell you how special their pet really is; they’re with us in our happiest and saddest moments, always ready to share their love. So, why not give them a special role on the day to highlight their importance? Imagine having your companion by your side as you walk down the aisle towards your future husband/wife. Many popular roles included flowergirl, best man, dog-of-honour or ring bearer. Check with your celebrant or registrar to ensure they’re comfortable with this.

For a fun and special touch to your day, why not attach a GoPro to your pet’s harness to capture the day in their eyes? This entertaining idea is the perfect way to look back on your wedding and feel even closer to your best bud – it will also make for some hilarious moments!

RELAXED, INFORMAL VIBES

Jacquie Keeley from Fab Food For You (https://fabfoodforyou.co.uk) says: “I can see 2023 couples looking for venues with plenty of characterful features and outdoor space, especially since the change in the law means they can marry anywhere within the grounds of a licensed venue.

“Many will look for places offering the added bonus of accommodation, allowing for a full weekend of celebrations. In a similar vein, locations with plenty of on-site interest to keep guests and couples alike entertained during their stay such as a pool, jacuzzi, spa, and/or tennis courts will be the go tos.

“Since Covid, many families haven’t been able to get together fully for what seems like an age and from my experience of working with couples recently, they’re feeling the need for more freedom without too much structure. Consequently, big-day dining styles will be leaning more away from the traditional sit-down meal. So, informal sharing platters placed at the centre of the table offering a real sense of community, are my top tip for 2023 wedding catering.

“The rustic vibe will also continue to shine, lending itself very well to the desire for a more chilled atmosphere, so semi-naked wedding cakes decked in homegrown edible flowers, homemade pork pie stacks, and large cheese stacks will be huge.”

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES

Charlotte from C&C Imagery (www.candcimagery.co.uk) says:

“Wedding photography has always been a key part of couples’ big days and given the huge range of photographers to choose from with a wide variety of styles, picking the perfect match can be overwhelming. Last year, weddings made their comeback and 2023 is set to build on this. Trends in wedding photography are forever evolving, stemming away from the traditional and formal shots of yesteryear, instead benefitting from a more relaxed approach.

“The candid, documentary style, including the much-loved confetti shot and family group images is here to stay. However, a lot of our couples are now opting for something different. Smoke flares lead to some fantastic imagery and are a wonderful way to bring a pop of colour to proceedings. Sparkler send-offs were a popular choice for 2022 and 2023 will be no different.

“For us, we see 2023 being the year of bridal portraits. They’re not for everyone, but when done correctly these are a beautiful reminder of how you looked and felt on your big day. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the year has in store!”

THE ENGLISH ARE COMING!

William Coren, managing director at House Coren (www.housecoren.co.uk) says: “I think we’ll see a huge rise in the demand for English sparkling wines for weddings in 2023 as awareness of it continues to increase. A key growth area is in winning over the celebration category, which has historically been dominated by Champagne, but we’re now seeing a shift toward quality English sparkling wines here in the UK. The quality is as good as, if not better than, its French cousin and after various lockdown restrictions along with the cost of living squeeze we’ve seen a desire from customers to shop British.

“The emergence of the Charmat wine category amongst English wines will be an area to watch. The different method of production that highlights the fruit characteristics of the wine, has proven to be a winning formula, alongside its more accessible pricing should mean a winning combination for couples who want top quality wine with crowd-pleasing qualities that won’t break the bank. Boco by House Coren is one of the best examples of this style.

“Finally, as more and more vineyards in the UK open their doors as wedding venues, it only makes sense for couples to toast their nuptials with the venue’s wine as well.”

YOUR WEDDING, YOUR WAY

Brighton-based Mark Inscoe, Civil Celebrant Sussex (https://civilcelebrantsussex.com), says: “With the restrictions of the last few years hopefully consigned to the past, couples will be wanting to celebrate their most special of days with all of their family and friends.

“I expect to see an increase in celebrant-led ceremonies as couples are becoming more aware of this option. By teaming with an independent celebrant, you can work together to create a unique and personalised ceremony meaning your wedding celebration puts you at the heart of the day.

ABSTRACT THINKING

Emily Fitter from Emily’s Mixing Bowl (www.emilysmixingbowl.co.uk) says: “I expect to see more abstract cakes, sometimes with fewer flowers and more texture, with plenty of movement. Here, the rice paper sails mimic the flowing ethereal feeling of a wedding dress. Edible, pressed flower cakes too are going to be big this year, especially for the more relaxed rustic couples.

“Finally, vintage/retro style Lambeth cakes will be making a comeback for couples who want to have fun with their cake; not just in white, but in pastel shades too – how kitch!”

“There will also be more of a shift towards ecoweddings as couples become much more aware of the impact of their day on the environment. This will lead to an increased demand for sustainable and biodegradable products, as well as clothing and accessories hire.

“Outdoor weddings will also remain popular as couples look to put a unique stamp on their day and keep it true to themselves. I’m going to be the celebrant for a renewal of vows this March and as part of the ceremony Kay and Mark have asked me to sing Elvis Presley’s She Wears My Ring, a significant song played at their wedding 30 years ago. After all, there should be no such thing as a standard wedding ceremony. My word for 2023 is: unique.”

WatchPilot, a UK-based watch retailer, has opened its first high street store in Richmond, Surrey. Founded in 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic by Tim Harrison and Akbar Hussain, WatchPilot launched online with success and has added new brands to the platform monthly. Now, along with affordable and high-end timepieces, the new bricks and mortar store will showcase more than 30 brands of watches and employ experienced and knowledgeable staff.

Tim Harrison tells us: “We will continue to grow our online presence, however, particularly within the luxury side of watch retail, there will always be demand for a premium in-store experience. Q&A Beauty

Look and feel your big-day best with help from the experts

This issue we asked local beauty experts for their top 2023 trend predictions, giving you the jump on the latest looks. This is what they told us...

THE YEAR OF MINIMAL MAKE-UP

2023 TRENDS

Claire Reed from Beauty Ninjas (www.thebeautyninjas.co.uk) says: I predict that 2023 bridal make-up will see a continuation of the minimal make-up trend. Brides will always want to look beautiful, but I think we’re definitely seeing a backlash against the hard glamour looks we’ve seen a lot of on Instagram. So, this means a glowing complexion with minimal foundation, as opposed to full coverage; and the features will be softly sculpted with bronzer, rather than heavy cream contour. Soft, fluffy and natural brows will be favoured over the bold, crisp pomade style. Meanwhile, cluster lashes will replace bulky strip lashes and eye make-up will be light and shimmery as opposed to heavy and smoky. Pinky shades will be favoured over nude or bold statement lips. “This look is absolutely ideal for brides as it’s classic and timeless. You’ll look and feel like the most beautiful version of yourself and will look back on your photos for years to come without once thinking: “What on earth was that make-up trend about?!”

THE YEAR OF FLAWLESS SKIN AND SWITCHING IT UP

Make-up artist Becky Flynn (www.makeupbybeckyflynn.com) says: Something that looks set to continue throughout 2023 is the focus on skin. Brides are asking for flawless yet natural-looking skin – glowing and glass-like. I’m rarely reaching for matte, full coverage foundations now instead opting for light-weight, luminous foundations or tinted moisturisers. Mixing it with something like Laura Mercier Illuminating Primer is perfect for that extra-hydrated glow. Keeping the skin natural, there’s less contouring instead creating a softer look with blusher. I love layering a few colours to create a more bespoke look.

The hydrated look also applies to lips, with more brides opting for a very glossy pout with more of a neutral or nude tone. For the eyes, individual lashes look to be very hot this year with more focus on a fluffy lash and soft liner. I’m seeing less eyeshadow, just a sweep of a warm, matte shade with many brides opting for a glittery, shimmery eye in the evening instead.

This brings us to a second look that’s becoming popular, with brides opting for a change of dress, hair and make-up for the evening. Adding a little sparkle is always so much fun and a great way to plan two looks you love.

TRIED AND TESTED

Over time, our natural hyaluronic acid levels decline, making the appearance of those dreaded lines and wrinkles more pronounced. But RoC’s new Hydrate + Plump Daily Moisturizer comes to the rescue with SPF 30 helping to restore skin’s natural moisture, visibly replumping lines and replenishing hydration. CWM editor Rachel Westall put it to the test.

“As a woman in my 30s, my skin is an area I need to pay attention to, and with RoC endorsed by one of my all-time fave gals, Sarah Jessica Parker, I was already sold! These winter months can be so harsh on your skin so this has been a welcome addition to my morning routine, keeping my face hydrated with a natural glow. It’s superlightweight so it’s easy to apply and leaves no residue behind, only soft smooth skin all day. I can’t wait to try the entire range.” £35.99, https://rocskincare.co.uk

DOT TO DOT

The Utan Pen is the viral TikTok freckle pen that Sophie Habboo and Melissa Tattum are raving about. While many of you may long for a glowy sun-kissed look for your big day, the damage UV rays can cause the skin is something we’re only too aware of. However, the recently-launched Utan Pen makes this goal totally achievable with zero sun damage. Designed to create instant natural-looking freckles that develop to suit each individual skin tone, it has been compared to semi-permanent make-up. The formula is even water-resistant and sweat proof, lasting up to 48 hours, so whatever the wedding day throws at you, your super-cute freckles will remain perfectly in place.

HEMP, HEMP HOORAY!

Only around three per cent of polypropylene plastic, the material synthetic eyelashes are made from, can be recycled and takes 20 to 30 years to decompose. Using plant-based innovation, Velour’s 100 per cent vegan and cruelty-free plant fibre lash collection, thought to be the first of its kind, is derived entirely from hemp.

Blending beautifully with natural lashes, Velour Plant Fibre Lashes have been handmade for a fine, fluttery and wispy hair-like texture with a natural matte finish, ideal for enhancing bridal make-up looks. They sit on a lightweight thin black full-length cotton band for all-day comfort. Now you can bat your lashes at your soon-to-be spouse as they wait for you at the end of the aisle without impacting the planet.

£22, www.sephora.co.uk

The brand’s founder and perfumer Romano Ricci says of the new scent, “It would take me more than a lifetime to explore the complexity of women! Since the beginning I’ve attempted to unravel, layer by layer, the facets of women with a capital W. With this latest opus, I wanted to unite them all. Sometimes femme fatale, sometimes romantic, sometimes boyish, Ego Straits embraces all those contradictions while blurring the lines.”

THE hair NECESSITIES

Achieve wedding-ready locks with multi-award-winning celebrity hair stylist and TV hair expert Vicki Lord

Multi-award winner Vicki Lord (www.vickilord.co.uk) is no stranger to the wonderful world of bridal hair; indeed, with more than 30 years of experience, weddings are her passion. The current brand ambassador for Colour Wow, this work has most recently taken her to Australia. She can list among her latest celebrity clients Jack Whitehall, Roxy Horner, Kara Tointon, and Shona Mcgarty.

Vicki took a break from the whirlwind of the session hair world to speak to beauty editor Kelly Andrews about how best to prepare hair for the big day and shares her top bridal trend predictions for 2023.

What’s the best time to seek out a bridal hair stylist and start thinking about the big-day look?

Selecting the right time to see your hair stylist for a consultation and trial is paramount and brides are always eager to book it months or even a year in advance. That said; although it may seem like a good idea, do bear in mind that hair fashions change seasonally throughout the year. Summer may be about braids, whereas winter could usher in a time of slick buns. I suggest and recommend having a trial approximately three to four months prior to your big day allowing your locks plenty of time to grow, while catering for a colour change and fashions. This will also give you enough time to find an alternative hair stylist just in case you’re not comfortable with your first choice.

Why are consultations such an important part of the process? Consultations are key when selecting your desired look for your special day. I’ve experienced many brides coming to me with photos of what they’d like their hair to look like, but sadly overlook important aspects that play a vital role when selecting a style. The shape of the face, the texture of the hair, and most importantly the neckline of that all-important dress are all crucial. For example, if you have a square jawline and want a side bun this will likely exaggerate the width of the face. I work a lot with shapes and silhouettes to make sure the look that’s chosen best complements all of my brides’ features beautifully. A good hair stylist

should be able to help and guide you to choose the perfect wedding hair for your dress.

What’s the most important consideration in the run up to W-day? It’s important to maintain the health of your hair prior to your big day. I’d recommend regular trims and conditioning treatments to keep your luscious locks in tip top condition. After all, shiny, healthy hair looks great on camera!

What bridal hair trends do you expect to see emerging in 2023? Personally, I’d like to see editorial runway hairstyles on brides and will be working on this innovative trend with my soon-to-be-weds as well as teaching these techniques to other bridal hair and make-up artists in my new academy course launching in 2023.

Delving into 2023 fashion trends, I feel inspired by 90s spiky buns as seen on the likes of Kendal Jenner, Gigi Hadid and other social media influencers. Centre partings and wet-look styles with high shine as seen on Chanel, Vivienne Westwood and Balmain runways are also fashionforward looks to keep an eye out for. I also love Giorgio Armani’s simplistic ponytails, bubble braids and pigtails.

Big hair accessories are making an appearance within designers’ collections. Think head scarves, large bows, Frida Kahlo-style flower crowns, and mini and beaded headbands. I’d love to see a bridal take on all of these to complement hair and gowns this year.

The truth ABOUT SUGAR

Find your way to wedding wellness by managing that sweet tooth with help from expert nutritionists

Celebrations such as weddings are typically marked with something sweet – who would say “no” to a slice of cake? While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying sweet treats, excess sugar is inextricably linked with poor health and is the possible cause of issues like inflammatory skin conditions and mood swings. None of which make particularly desirable additions to a wedding day!

The trouble is we can’t do without it! The simplest form of sugar, glucose, is used by every cell in the body to create energy, so it’s a vital molecule helping us to function. According to the NHS, we should be aiming for an intake of no more than 30g of sugar per day. Although, experts say that we unwittingly consume much more due to hidden sugars found in various foods. Such culprits include a myriad of favourites like pasta sauces, dips, ready meals, chilled meats, yoghurts and cereals, as well as carbohydrates including potatoes, pasta, bread and even vegetables like carrots.

Why is this a problem? Over time excess sugar intake can lead to more sinister health concerns such as type 2 diabetes. So, to find out how to look forward to a happy, healthy wedding day and beyond, County Wedding Magazines’ beauty and wellbeing editor, Kelly Andrews, asked expert nutritionists Minal Sudra and Elizabeth Andrews from Wedding Wellness for some advice on managing the sweet tooth in all of us.

READ FOOD LABELS

To find hidden sugars, review the ingredients in your food by using the traffic light labels on packaging, which indicate total sugars. Ingredients are listed in order of quantity, so avoid anything that lists sugar high up or

switch to a sugar-free substitute. Watch out for alternative names for sugar like syrup and anything that ends in “-ose” (sucrose, fructose).

WATCH WHAT YOU DRINK

Whether it’s a syrupy cocktail, a fizzy energy drink, or a glass of orange juice, certain drinks contain a shocking level of sugar that actually causes you to eat more than normal. Opt for water or tonic-based drinks that are not only lower in sugar, but will help keep your teeth healthy too.

CURB THE CRAVINGS

No doubt sugar makes us feel good. It lights up an area of the brain that we associate with being rewarded, which is why sugar cravings can be hard to beat. Planning is key; if you like to snack, choose sugar-free options such as nuts, veg sticks and hummus or plain yoghurt with berries. Ensure your meals include complex carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats to keep you full with more nutrient-dense foods. This is why dessert is served last!

IT’S NOT DOWN TO SIZE

A common mistake many make is to continue eating poorly if they don’t put on weight. Body shape however, isn’t always the truest indicator of health. Genetics and ethnicity play a big part in how we metabolise foods, so be mindful of what you’re eating regardless of your size. Healthy on the inside equals healthy on the outside.

HEALTHY SUGARS

Foods like honey, maple syrup, jaggery, molasses and treacle are often considered healthier due to their additional benefits, such

as vitamin, mineral and antioxidant properties. They are however forms of sugar just like the regular white or brown kinds, so be mindful of any source of the sweet stuff.

FIBRE IS YOUR FRIEND

Fibre is found in all fruits and vegetables and is essential for gut health. The reason whole fruits are usually preferred over the juiced alternative is that fibre dramatically slows down the rate at which sugar hits the bloodstream, making it much more manageable for the body to store, while keeping you satiated. Fruit also comes with essential vitamins and minerals, making it a perfect alternative to processed sugary foods.

A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP

All food, including sugar, should be enjoyed as part of an overall healthy diet. Pay attention to the total amount of sugar you consume and make better choices to avoid hidden sugars. This way, you can consciously enjoy sweet treats when you fancy.

Being restrictive and associating guilt with food only causes confusion and emotional distress leading to further complications impacting long-term health. Knowing what’s in your food will help you make better decisions for better wellbeing.

OF THE BAY On the dock

Crete, the largest island in Greece, is renowned for its stunning golden beaches, wild natural beauty, delicious cuisine and thousands of years of culture and history. Add to that the kind and generous Cretan hospitality, gorgeous weather and chilled vibes and you can guarantee the perfect getaway.

My husband and I jetted off to the Wyndham Grand Crete Mirabello Bay report on the eastern side of the island at the beautiful coastal town of Agios Nikolaos. Our trip was for a few days, but I don’t think a twoweek break would’ve felt like long enough – it was truly amazing. It coincided with a milestone birthday too (my 40th!), so it felt extra special, almost as special as reliving our honeymoon all over again.

HEAVENLY ROOMS

After just a 50-minute transfer from Heraklion Airport, we arrived at our home for the next few days and were excited at what we were greeted by. This beachfront resort features the most amazing sea views overlooking Mirabello Bay, that are framed by picturesque mountains and our room, like many here, overlooked that very view.

We were lucky to experience a stay in one of the Wyndham Collection Sea View Maisonettes in the resort’s Village. If you’re honeymooning here, I highly recommend a stay in a maisonette or bungalow. Each of these feature private infinity pools and sun loungers and many, like ours, looked out to the Mediterranean – perfect! The resort will even arrange for a private floating breakfast upon request to make your first morning here as a married couple even more special.

The rooms in the main building are just as gorgeous, with either sea, garden or bay views, all boast modern interiors and there’s also the option of a wellness room with your very own rooftop jetted pool – the accommodation options are endless.

KICK BACK AND RELAX

As well as our private pool, we enjoyed both of the resort’s pools – one by the beach with those stunning sea views once again, and the adultonly option within the Village (a quiet, calming spot in which to enjoy the sunshine). We also love a beach and dip in the sea and the hotel boasts a sandy beach and a pebble beach within the premises, so we were spoilt for choice. The free-of-charge beach cabanas were also a romantic addition and made the beach trip feel all the more special.

The hotel also benefits from an onsite spa offering an extensive range of massages and treatments, salon services, an indoor pool and a sauna and hammam. For those on their honeymoon, there’s a beachfront couples treatment area (available upon request) so you can lose yourself to the sound of the crashing waves whilst enjoying your massage.

GET ACTIVE

For the more energetic, there’s plenty of activities here to keep you busy. Three tennis courts, a beach volleyball court and an outdoor fitness and bodyweight training area to name a few! The water sports enthusiasts are also in luck – just head down to the beach and choose from scuba diving, snorkelling, jet skiing, water skiing or head out on a banana boat, pedalo

or canoe to take in the views from the water. For a lower-impact activity, some of the rooms in the Village boast yoga and pilates decks over the pools too.

FOOD AND DRINK

The resort features nine on-site restaurants and bars offering aweinspiring views. Our breakfast spot each morning was just perfect looking out to sea through a stone arch of the restaurant’s balcony. Throughout the day, you can grab a cocktail or beer from one of the bars and refuel with your choice of delicious Cretan, Mediterranean, Italian, or barbeque cuisine. You can also order food to your room to make the most of your private balcony.

During our stay we enjoyed some beautiful pasta at Elia A La Carte Restaurant and indulged in the local culture at the Kafenion Cretan Restaurant with traditional rustic cookery and Cretan dancing.

If it’s a chilled drink you’re after as your day comes to a close, check out the Shisha Patio. With its throws, cushions and mind-soothing background tunes, this is the perfect way to unwind after your day in the sun.

EXPLORE

The resort had more than enough to entertain us, but we took a short stroll into the chic cosmopolitan town of Agios Nikolaos. With its shop, bar and restaurant-lined promenade and buzzy atmosphere we loved our time here. Lake Voulismeni is at the heart of this vibrant town, and we just happened to be there during the international cliff diving competition which was a spectacle to see! My big birthday just happened to be on the day of the final, so we decided to eat out that night at the Piano Restaurant overlooking the lake and diving and what a treat it was. The area had such a happy, festival vibe, the food and views were amazing, the locals eating there were the most welcoming and friendly, and just as my birthday cake appeared (made especially by the chef), the cliff diving closing fireworks commenced. It was almost as if my husband planned it all as a romantic surprise (he didn’t by the way but was feeling quite pleased with himself – what good luck hey!).

There’s so much more to do and see but our time here just wasn’t long enough to squeeze more in. What I can say for sure though is that we’ll be back. Crete’s definitely got a special place in our hearts.

BOOK IT

We flew from Leeds Bradford Airport with Jet2 to Heraklion Airport which is just 64km from the hotel.
