ello lovely readers and welcome to another issue of Your East Midlands Wedding. Autumn is such a beautiful time of year to exchange vows and Christmas is just around the corner – sorry, I couldn’t help but slip that in there! As we look back on the last 18 months, it has been an emotional roller coastal for us all with the lockdowns, restrictions and uncertainties. But I’ve never been prouder of the wedding industry who has worked hard to support couples and help them plan the perfect day while meeting any guidelines in place. With the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, whoops and cheers, there’s a fantastic buzz in the world of weddings and I’m overthe-moon to see so many special events taking place with lots of celebrations – I’ve missed seeing everyone up on the dancefloor dancing the night away! Planning a wedding is such an exciting experience and if I could share one piece of advice, it would be to get organised from the get-go. Make a list of everything that’s important to you both and highlight any priorities. It’s always good to have an idea of what you want on the big day, but I recommend not just focusing on one style and ruling everything else out. Start the planning process with an open mind and discover new elements and exciting ideas that could work well for your day. If you’re on the hunt for local suppliers, you’re in luck because we’ve searched high and low to find trustworthy companies from all around the East Midlands. In this wonderful issue, you’ll find stellar advice, top tips and inspiration to help you plan the perfect day. From beauty experts, stunning venues, florists, cake bakers and more – we’ve got you covered!

This issue is pack with beautiful inspiration and when I first saw the images from this styled shoot, I knew it would be perfect for our readers! A team of local suppliers came together to showcase their talent and created the perfect style for a vintage-themed wedding at Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire. Hannah Shearman Photography captured the most beautiful images that demonstrated the opulent venue perfectly. I loved how the team created sustainable choices to prove that couples don’t have to compromise on the wedding look if they want a more eco-friendly day. Shoot coordinator Samantha at Willow and Rust Weddings says, “I wanted to create something using a rich and luxurious colour palette using teal greens, rich pinks and reds to match my vintage-glamour aesthetic. The surroundings at Newstead Abbey are beautiful and were perfect for this concept.” Flick to page 44 to read about the day!

THE PERFECT DAY Cripps & Co is a family-run business that specialises in restoring old buildings and transforming them into the perfect wedding venues full of character and charm. The team are excited to announce their new location, Grangefields, which is located in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside. The rustic barn has just started to host weddings and the experienced team has taken time to plan every detail, including speakers in the toilets (so nobody misses the speeches), colourchanging lights on the dancefloor and a state-of-the-art Funktion-One sound system. The ceremony space features 150 handmade-lead windows, hundreds of candles, fairylights and a log fire for the colder months. At this property, couples won’t have to worry about the British weather as the glassfronted Dutch Barn has been designed to hold drink receptions with 150 people when it rains thanks to the raised veranda. The venue has a glass-fronted show kitchen with a French rotisserie, a rotating wood-fired pizza oven, and a charcoal barbecue as the centrepiece. Each dish is created using the best ingredients and is just exceptional. Chrome lights taken from an old warship lights up the seven-meter-long oak bar and greenery hangs from the ceiling to create a magical atmosphere. The venue’s focal point is the sheltered courtyard, which features an Argentinian Asado, an outdoor ceremony space that doubles up as a bar and the old cow troughs filled with ice and drinks. This location comes to life at night and is illuminated with festoon lights, flares and fire pits for toasting marshmallows. For all the wine lovers out there, the venue’s in-house wine buyer has an excellent established relationship with artisan winemakers around Europe and visits every producer in person to buy the product straight from the vineyards. J
ames and Katy met through mutual friends and it became clear that they shared a strong connection after a few dates. Katy says, “We were confident in each other’s company; every conversation was so effortless and full of laughter.” It was evident from the early stages of the relationship that they had found the one. Katy comments, “We’ve always had a way of making natural progressions throughout our relationship, without always thoroughly speaking about them beforehand.” During a trip away to Buxton, the exact location of their first holiday together, James proposed on the 18th February 2019, and popped the question during a picturesque walk through Dovedale. Katy had expected an earlier proposal thanks to her work colleagues who’d convinced her that James would propose during a cruise holiday to Norway in late 2018. Although it never happened, Katy was pleased that the actual proposal was a complete surprise. The pair initially planned the wedding before Covid-19 and once the pandemic hit the UK, the couple agreed to stick to their set date unless the day was cancelled. However, the timing was perfect and any regulations lifted before they said “I do.”
SETTING THE SCENE When it came to sourcing the perfect reception space, what location would be better than The Dower House Hotel? The elegant property features beautiful red-brick walls, stunning windows and mock-Tudor timbers. With simple lines and beautiful shapes, the building creates the perfect backdrop for wedding celebrations. Katy says, “After visiting the venue on our first tour, we both fell in love with the Edwardian-themed country house and the beautiful grounds. We could envisage our gorgeous wedding reception and nothing was too much trouble for the team who catered to our vision to ensure the perfect day!” James wanted to include flowers as part of the centrepieces, which looked so elegant in tall vases. The pair loved the idea of navy and white florals and incorporated this throughout the bouquet and flower arrangements. The traditional-style table plan worked perfectly with the navy and gold colour scheme and each guest could find their seat easily thanks to the simple but elegant place names. Here guests received the perfect favours. Katy says, “We wanted to give our guests

REAL WEDDINGS something a little different and gave them wild-flower seeds in brownvintage packets saying ‘let love grow’ on them.” Katy and her Dad travelled from Woodhall Spa to Swineshead St Mary’s Church in a cream beauford wedding car, which had navy ribbons and bows to match the colour scheme. The vehicle created the perfect backdrop to wedding photography and the couple travelled back to the reception venue after the ceremony.
LOOKING THE PART The bride wanted to create a natural and elegant style and opted for a strapless dress from KMG Bridal Studio in Billinghay. She accessorised her look with a short veil, which featured crystals to compliment the dress, a simple gold-pendant necklace and some sparkly-stud earrings. Katy says, “I was a little unsure of how everything would go together leading up to the wedding day, but I was so happy with the end result and I couldn’t wait to see James at the church.” The groom looked dapper in a Marc Darcy navy three-piece suit with golden-check pinstripes. He says, “I had seen this particular suit in the shop window after we’d got engaged and told Katy, ‘that’s the suit I’m going to wear’. The team at Gere Menswear in Lincoln had a superb service and were so helpful.” All the groomsmen wore matching suits but a different colour tie to allow the groom to stand out. The bridesmaids all looked beautiful in navy maxi-styled dresses, with short sleeves and sliver and navy beads.
TIME TO CELEBRATE After being away from loved ones for so long, the couple was excited to celebrate with their nearest and dearests. Katy says, “After a longawaited family gathering post-Covid, everyone was happy to relax in the sun while eating ice-creams and enjoying each other’s company. In the evening, the guests worked off the wedding breakfast while dancing long into the night with music from the resident DJ.”
MEMORABLE MOMENTS On the wedding morning, Katy felt nervous when she woke up, but this faded once preparations were underway. After getting her hair and make-up done, she was so excited to see James. He says, “I was initially very nervous when I woke up to an unusually empty house in the morning, but the thought of seeing my soon-to-be wife at the altar relaxed my thoughts completely.” The couple had many memorable moments throughout the day that they’ll remember for the rest of their lives. Katy comments, “We both agree that the car journey to the reception venue in the first moments as husband and wife was extra special. The open-top ride through the village of Woodhall with cheers of congratulations and rounds of applause were so overwhelming.” The day was full of lovely and funny moments, like when James’s brother Jake announced to the whole crowd that they’d dress up with hoop earrings and vibrant-red lipstick when they were younger at their nan’s house. The pair is so thankful to the talented suppliers who made their day possible. Katy says, “We would like to say a huge thank you as we couldn’t have wished for a better wedding and we’d highly recommend any of the companies to anyone planning a wedding!”
“Our top tip would be to not worry about the little things as it all comes together in the end and remember it’s your big day!” – Katy 23

Mary says, “We both work in the care sector, so we’re naturally very caring to one another.” She adds, “One day Mark turned and gave me a certain look, from that moment I knew he was the one.” After spending lots of time together, the pair decided they wanted to get married and started looking for rings. Rustic romance
Charlene and James had a beautiful wedding at Swancar Farm Country House Images courtesy of Daniel Burton Photography
E
very love story has a beginning and Charlene and James’s started at work. After sharing her chocolate bars and inviting James to their local Café for coffee multiple times, the pair grew closer and slowly fell in love. After learning more about one another, James won Charlene’s heart with his cooking and caring nature, like the time when she had food poisoning and he took excellent care of her. James knew he had found the one
when Charlene paid for the first date at a local pub. After creating lots of loving memories and a life together, James proposed in New York on the 30th December 2017. Charlene says, “We got engaged in our hotel and spent the next two days celebrating, including watching the ball drop-in Times Square.” Here Charlene shares more details about their special day…
33
Our main wedding goal was to have the best day possible with unforgettable moments.
We originally planned to get married during summer, but we decided to get married at Christmas after visiting Swancar Farm Country House and falling in love with the festive décor.
Each table had hexagon-shaped favours that doubled up as place names as well as candelabras wrapped in ivy, pink Laura Ashley candles and fairylights.
I booked an Aston Martin to pick James up as a surprise on the day.
The bridesmaids looked beautiful in Vera Wang pale-pink dresses.
34
We both felt so happy and excited on the day!
REAL WEDDINGS
Our tasty cake matched the pale-pink colour scheme perfectly.
I had a beautiful pale-pink bouquet and a top table arrangement.
I wore a redesigned wedding dress and a Tiffany & Co. bracelet plus a Swarovski necklace and earrings – I couldn’t believe that I looked like a bride!
James added a personalised pocket watch and cufflinks to finish off his look.
James and his groomsmen all wore matching blue three-piece suits from House of Cavani.
35
A saxophonist played to keep guest entertained while we had our photos taken.
The venue’s wedding planner Louise was amazing and ensured we had the best day possible.
We surprised everyone with fireworks in the evening, which made the night extra special

ith rocky cliffs and desert-like scenery, Greetwell Old Quarry in Lincoln was the perfect backdrop to this dramatic shoot. Robyn Wood at Perfect Silhouette Hairdressing brought together a group of suppliers to create two completely different looks and the results are simply breathtaking. She says, “I loved taking what’s perceived as bridal and placing it against an unexpected location to see the contrast between the two. I adore the striking and alternative images that are full of inspiration!” The first extravagant look contrasted against the backdrop of the wilderness and moody skies perfectly and featured a beautiful fluffy dress, a bold flower crown and bouquet, bright make-up and curly hair. The second look was a more alternative style with a shimmering-black dress, a dark colour palette for the florals and make-up look, a sleek bun, a statement sequin headband, a black veil and a hand-painted leather jacket.

his beautiful shoot was located at Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire and features a rich and opulent colour palette with teal green, pink and red shades. Shoot coordinator Samantha Withey at Willow and Rust Weddings pulled together a hard-working team of suppliers eager to showcase their skills and talent. She says, “I wanted to create something that matched my vintage-glamour aesthetic, while demonstrating how couples can create a luxurious looking event with more sustainable choices. “An eco-friendly company, ellie & liv, provided the stationery on the day and the team always works hard to ensure they use recycled and vegan papers and inks. “The dress was an ex-sample gown from The Wedding Boutique and the suit was from their hire collection. All of the props are from my hire range and are reused many times to ensure nothing is wasted while the glassware, vases and candlesticks are all vintage pieces collected from antique shops and second-hand stores. All table linens are made by natural fibres, including the rich silk and cotton velvets. “Helen from Willow & Bear used only British grown flowers and foliage, while sourcing as much as possible from local suppliers. Everything was hand-tied or arranged in water and no foam was used.” 44

The Copper Sure Rapid Dry Hair Wrap is the latest innovation from cult hair health brand AQUIS. Made from a naturally antimicrobial performance fabric it allows the hair to dry without force or heat and eliminates the frizz, damage and breakage caused by harsh terry towels. Hair is at its weakest when wet so protecting it from such harsh treatment means it’ll be smoother and stronger. What’s more, since it’s woven with copper, which boasts antimicrobial and antibacterial properties proven to repel bacteria the wrap stays fresher longer, and is great for travel. SILKY SMOOTH
Silk is by far the best material to use in a cleansing routine as the natural amino acids leave skin noticeably radiant and delay the ageing process. Cotton is, in fact, abrasive on a cellular level so, cleansing with a flannel causes friction leading to fine lines. This Is Silk’s 100 per cent silk face cloths boast a weave that gently exfoliates, conditions and smooths skin, leaving it glowing. What’s more, they’ve been naturally dyed black to avoid unsightly make-up marks, which can blight their white counterparts even after a thorough wash. Be beautiful
BE YOU
Emolyne Ramlov, founder of the eponymous make-up brand, talks inclusivity and bringing a colour boost to your bridal beauty
Tim McBaj
It’s our first anniversary soon and there’s been so much to learn over that time. Covid made things difficult as we actually went into lockdown around two weeks before launch. But we’d worked so hard for two-and-a-half years and I didn’t want to delay. It was a risk, but luckily it went crazy. Black Lives Matter came along and as an inclusive brand headed up by a black woman there was a lot of interest in what we had to offer. Everything happens for a reason.
B
orn in Uganda and raised in Denmark Emolyne Ramlov discovered a passion for make-up upon entering her teenage years. Until the age of 13 when she moved to Europe she hadn’t been permitted to wear make-up, which in Africa was seen as a distraction from studying and an unwelcome beginning to a flirtation with the opposite sex. So, it was a complete culture shock for her as she sat alongside her new classmates to find them in full beat and looking glam. “I went home and said to my mum: ‘We need to talk!’ She took me shopping and I filled my basket with as much make-up as I could. I needed to catch up and I haven’t stopped since,” she tells us. County Wedding Magazines’ beauty editor, Kelly Andrews, met up with Emolyne to discover more about her journey from passionate teenager to creating her very own make-up brand. What was the inspiration behind Emolyne? As my love for make-up grew I visited plenty of big stores looking for products to suit my skin tone, but couldn’t find the right ones. They had two to three reds perhaps, but none that I 66
liked or were complementary. As I grew older I realised that this was a problem across a lot of different product ranges. There was no single brand offering a matching lipstick, liner and nail polish, so I thought: “Well, I’m just going to do this then!” I use a lot of reds and nudes myself, so it made sense to start there, making sure that no matter the skin tone someone would be able to get at least one of each. I created 15 reds and 15 nude shades and even then I wasn’t sure if I should stop! The range has five colours for light, five for medium and five for dark skin tones. It allows people to pick a different colour for different seasons, as our skin tone changes throughout the year. I also created a kit to save my customers time, meaning once they discover their perfect shade they can easily find the matching products. When it came to naming this huge range of shades I wanted to be able to tell a story while keeping the brand personal, so I immediately thought of Africa. It was a way of honouring my place of birth and bringing the whole story together. Plus, I knew I could never run out of names if I looked there for inspiration!
Tell us more about the ideas, ethics and beliefs the company is founded on. I wanted this brand to be for everyone, no matter their gender or race – if you’re into make-up this is the place for you. The selection is big enough that everyone can feel included, which was the key. How do we achieve that perfect marriage between skin tone and make-up shades? The easiest way for us was to put models on our website covering as many different skin tones as
BEAUTY INTERVIEW
we could. That way customers can see whose is the closest to their own and how each shade looks on her. Tell us about your own beauty regime. I keep it simple. I wash my face every morning and evening, as well as steaming to open the pores, which allows serums to absorb more effectively. I use serum everywhere – hands, face, neck. These are the areas that start to show signs of age once you reach 40, so it’s important to look after them. A dermatologist once told me to use serum on my dry hands, and up to then I’d always thought it was just for the face, but I’ve never looked back. Ole Henriksen’s Truth Serum is my favourite, and not just because he’s a fellow Dane! What are your make-up bag must-haves? Uganda, Casablanca and Abuja are my favourite Emolyne shades. But it’s like being asked about my favourite child – they’re all my babies! I mainly wear a nude during the day for meetings, and in the evening I prefer reds. I’m particularly into red oranges at the moment. I always carry a nail polish with me too – Cameroon is versatile and works for all skin tones. And tissues... a mum can’t work without a tissue! What’s your top wedding-day make-up look? I’d go for something light depending on hair colour and skin tone. Keep it simple, elegant
and clean to keep focus on the eyes. You want your new spouse to see you sparkle. For light skin tones I’d recommend Luxor, Eritrea or Ciaro. For medium tones Tanzania, Kampala or Uganda work beautifully. And for darker tones Nairobi, Asmara or Marrakech are all perfect. Begin by using your favourite moisturiser, I’m a fan of a thick formulation in the winter. That serves as a base for the foundation and concealer. Then, keep building the look until you’re happy. Don’t start too strong as it’s hard to take anything back once you’ve gone too far.
“Enjoy and play with colour. Rule your shade and don’t be afraid to try something you haven’t tried before, they’re there to be explored.” What advice would you offer a bride who might not be used to wearing make-up but who wants to step it up for the wedding? I’d tone it down, don’t use too much. A little colour makes the lips pop, and match that to the eyeshadow for an on trend monochromatic look. What’s the one make-up secret you wish everyone knew? Moisturise properly before you do anything else. That’ll give you that all-important glow and
sets your make-up for long-lasting perfection. It was essential to me that our lipsticks last so you don’t have to keep topping it up throughout the day and that’s particularly important for a bride. What’s your proudest achievement so far? Definitely having the brand recognised for inclusivity. I love to see people go on the website and realise just how much choice there is, and hearing them say they just don’t know which to choose. The other thing for me was being able to make the products vegan and cruelty-free. I wanted to educate people to care about what they put on their skin, so this makes me really happy. Is there anything you’d still like to achieve? So much! Every day we listen to our consumers and what they want. So, the next phase for Emolyne Cosmetics is incorporating more skin tones for them, as well as including more models they can identify with. I also want to grow the product categories while staying within the 15 reds and 15 nudes concept. Look out for our pop ups too. Our original plans for these had to be cancelled due to Covid, but I still want somewhere for people to experience the range in real life, so they’ll be coming soon.

It’s fragrance free, which I preferred for face application, its light consistency settles and dries quickly, and I definitely felt refreshed after applying in the afternoon after a busy day at work! As it can be spritzed, prefoundation, after make-up or throughout the day, it really is a perfect big-day product for the bride and her bridal party.” Danielle Harvey

ASK THE EXPERTS Our local professionals solve your fashion problems ACCESSORISE AND SHINE We’re trying to keep our wedding as ecofriendly as possible, but I’m struggling wedding jewellery. What can you suggest? The environment is a concern for all of us because everything we do impacts the world. It’s so important to find a way to make our resources last for future generations. My sister and I run a small jeweller business in Rushden, and we’ve noticed that being ecofriendly isn’t the first thing our customers look for when buying jewellery. Diamonds that are traceable and guaranteed conflict-free are essential to couples, but it’s important to go a step further and make a difference. Most gold is recycled from scrap items before it’s turned into bullion and sheets used in jewellery. Most gold in the industry is not traceable and therefore open to maybe dubious origins. Look for companies, like ourselves, who have introduced Single Mine Origin (SMO) gold in wedding rings. Our gold is sourced from the Yanfolila Gold Mine in Mali and every gram is documented and audited with complete segregation from mine to finished product. Each piece must adhere to several strict CSR guidelines and follow the World Gold Council’s Responsible Gold Mining Principles. Chantelle Hewit | Crystelle Belle Jewellers www.crystellebelle.co.uk
AUTUMNAL VIBES What dress styles and fabrics would you suggest for an October wedding? Finding that dream dress is a huge task for any bride when the time comes. Throw in the curveball of the cooler months and you’re faced with navigating other challenges. The autumn months do come with many positives and can provide a stunning backdrop to occasions, but the last thing I want is for my brides to feel a chill on their special day. This becomes even more prevalent as we delve deeper into October, when the temperature drops. My suggestion is to look for heavier fabrics such as Mikado, which is thicker than other silk blends and holds its shape perfectly. Other considerations would also be to look for sleeves and a long skirt. One of my current favourite styles is Toscana from Rosa Clara. This dress ticks all the boxes for an October wedding with a heavier-voluminous skirt, finely detailedlong sleeves and the trending feature of an open back. Kennedy from our Sophia Tolli collection and Boady from WTOO by Watters Designs are perfect options for this time of year. Not forgetting our new arrivals Yumei, Yula and Yadir from the Luna Novias line, which also boasts these key features. Tina Wade | Iconic Bride | www.iconicbride.co.uk 69

EXPERT ADVICE
TOPIC
Top advice for the perfect wedding WHAT’S YOUR FLAVOUR? My wife-to-be and I love strong flavours and want something unusual for our cake. Do you have any suggestions? I love helping my couples choose the flavours for their special day because it’s very personal to each pair and needs to suit their tastes. I have a flavour to suit everyone, even the fussier eaters! A New York cheesecake sponge is a slightly more unusual option, a firm favourite with couples and has been one of my most ordered flavours over the years. It’s a unique flavour and if you’re a lover of cheesecake, it’s the one for you. It pairs well with a raspberry or strawberry conserve and a vanilla-bean buttercream, so it doesn’t overpower the taste of the cake. Another choice for a stronger palette would be the bubblegum cake. It has quite a punchy taste, just like the classic bubblegum flavour from when you were a kid – it goes great with a vanilla-bean buttercream. This option has been a popular choice for the 2021 wedding season with both kids and adults.
SHOW OF AFFECTION We’re thinking of booking our entertainment, but we’re a bit worried about booking someone online that we’ve never met. Do you have any suggestions? With so much done online these days, it can be challenging to know exactly what type of person you’re going to get. Here are my top tips to make the process more manageable. y Make sure to ask lots of questions, even if they seem silly to you. As a supplier, I want my couples to ask tons to make sure they’re completely happy and feel confident about my services. If the person/company you’re talking to doesn’t want to give much information,
they may not be what you want. y You’ll need to see the company in action to know if they’re going to be a good fit for your big day, so make sure to watch lots of videos of them in action. If an entertainment act doesn’t have videos online, ask for some. y Ask to chat face-to-face with the team; I offer all potential couples a chat and free demo before they book my company so they’re 100 per cent confident that they’ll get what they want. This can also be done via a video call! Rebecca Barnes Rebecca Barnes Harpist www.allthingsharp.co.uk

Our big day is fast approaching and we’re thinking of booking a videographer, but we’re not sure what to look for. Do you have any tips? Booking a videographer can be a big investment and decision to make. Good wedding companies will be booked up way in advance, so make sure you plan ahead. If you have a tight budget, look for new companies who may be offering an introduction package to build their portfolios. It’s also a good idea to look for a local business as you could save on fuel and travel costs. When looking for a wedding videographer, it’s a good idea to get some recommendations. There are many fantastic wedding
A PERFECT DAY We want everyone to have an excellent time on our wedding day. How can we make sure little ones are entertained throughout the day? Ensure all guests stay until the end of your special day by keeping the children entertained, supervised and having the best time while making memories. Keep those beautiful outfits pristine with non-messy crafts, board games, books, a soft play area, role play, space hoppers, giant games, baby sensory/musical activities or even a movie set up in the evening. The children can come and go as much as they want, so they don’t miss out on the reception party. They’ll love coming together to play with their friends, siblings or cousins where they can enjoy every second of the day. Here at Sweetheart Nannies, we’ll provide a full-mobile creche set up for all ages between 0 to 12-years-old, with activities suited to the age range you have attending on the day with professional, qualified nannies to keep an eye on the little ones. support groups on social media pages where couples can ask for recommendations or advice on anything wedding related. Check out the company’s customer testimonials and online reviews too. Always check out the wedding portfolio videos as well because videographers have a range of styles; watch the clips to see what one you like the best. Here at GeeK Video, we film in a documentary style, which means all your footage will be natural and captured in the moment. Georgia Lomas | GeeK Video | www.Geekvideo.co.uk
ARRIVE IN STYLE We’re having a vintage-themed celebration, and we want to incorporate this into our transport. Do you have any ideas of how we can do this? It’s a lovely idea to have your wedding day transport reflect a vintage-themed celebration and you can be chauffeur driven in a car that reflects the elegance, style, sophistication and panache of a Bygone era. First of all, see who can provide vintage or classic vehicles in your local vicinity, but be prepared to look in a little further for a company. A vintage car always works well with a vintage-style venue and don’t forget that your photographer will inevitably use the vehicle as a prop for the photos. It’s the perfect way to enhance the setting and achieve some amazing periodlooking shots. See the cars in person to see how much room there is for the dress and plan how you’re going to get in and out. A vintage car of any kind is rare to see on our roads today, so it is wonderful to be able to ride in something different on the special day. Love is in the air
County Wedding Magazines editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey
I
can’t quite believe that my wedding is only 10 months away! The time is going by so fast, and it still feels like we have so much left to plan! As some of you may know, within the first few months of being engaged we’d booked our venue, photographer and caterer and were on the lookout for the rest of our suppliers. With the pandemic pushing most weddings back in to 2022, we found that a lot of companies we were interested in booking weren’t available. Not to be defeated, we carried on searching knowing it was best to get everything sorted as early as possible. My fiancé, Dave, and I are enjoying the process, but it can feel slightly overwhelming at times. With such a big family and many coming from abroad, we’ve found it difficult trying to keep everyone happy while also maintaining our original budget, but we’re still super excited to see what the day will look like.
FLORAL WONDERS I love flowers and fully believe they can transform any venue into a beautiful space, so choosing the perfect florist was really important to me. I wanted something to tie in with our blush and sage green colour scheme but also complement our barn venue. Despite working in the wedding industry for more than five years, I’m ashamed to admit my knowledge of flowers isn’t great, g , so I needed a supplier pp who w would w
78
be able to make suggestions and help us bring our vision to life. Whilst looking through social media, I happened to come across a stunning, oversized bouquet that was exactly what I wanted. I looked up the company and found they were based just five minutes from our wedding venue – I thought it was fate! The florist had a range of pre-made packages that suited our needs perfectly. We checked the company’s reviews online, confirmed availability for our day and discussed our needs. The team were fantastic and even suggested ways of helping us save money, which we really appreciated. We booked bouquets, buttonholes, pew ends, centrepieces and an arrangement for the top table, which we’re excited to see. As we were in lockdown at the time, we were unable to meet our florist in person, so when restrictions lifted slightly we travelled to meet them at a wedding fair. Being able to discuss our vision in person made us feel confident about our decision, and I’d definitely recommend meeting face-to-face if possible.
DRESSED TO IMPRESS After being engaged for a few months, I decided to give in to my mum’s nagging and go dress shopping. I’m short, curvy and very selfconscious, so I was dreading trying on gowns! W We visited our local boutique, and since I had nno idea of what style I wanted, I must admit I felt quite overwhelmed. I started with a fishtail, fe which I liked the look of, but it just didn’t feel w lilike me; I also felt like I couldn’t sit down without bursting out of it! I quickly moved onto an A-line b ssilhouette. The second gown I tried on was one II’d seen online and loved. It had three-quarterlength sleeves, a detailed bodice, a plunging le nneckline and lots of lace. On paper, this sounds lilike everything I didn’t want in a dress, but sstrangely enough, it turned out to be the one. I tried on a few different options afterwards ((mainly for fun), but I found fault in all of them
and always came back to my dress. It needs some alterations as it’s slightly too big, but I purchased it there and then. I would share a picture with you all, but Dave reads this and is (annoyingly) traditional so is against seeing the dress before the big day! One thing I didn’t anticipate was how I would feel after purchasing it. I always thought I’d feel over the moon, but instead, I felt quite panicked. Not because I didn’t love the dress, but after years of writing about weddings, I felt so much pressure to have this overcome-withemotion moment when wearing the one for the first time, that I started to question if I’d made the right decision. I’ve since come to realise that everyone is different, and I absolutely adore my dress whether I cried or not. I’ve spoken to a few of my married friends, and some had similar experiences, which was reassuring to hear! My advice to any bride-to-be is to go with your gut, don’t panic about how you should be feeling or what you should be wearing, do what makes you happy! Make sure you check in next issue to hear all about our engagement shoot and my search for a hair and make-up artist.

Here’s my moodboard to help give you heaps of inspiration.
BRIDE’S DIARY
We haven’t decided on a table plan yet, but we like the idea of names hanging from string surrounded by gorgeous flowers.
I love confetti pictures, and it’s something I really want our photographer to capture on the big day. We’re currently looking into eco-friendly options and trying to decide which colour to use.
Our photographer has suggested taking pictures of my dress in different parts of the venue, and I’m excited to see what he comes up with.
Seeing as this July it rained, a lot, we’ve purchased some white umbrellas just in case the weather turns bad for our July wedding next year.
How stunning is this flower arch?! I’d love to incorporate something like this into our day.
Our colour scheme is blush and sage green, so we’re going to incorporate both hues into our table decorations.
The chalkboard signage trend is here to stay! I, for one, adore it and am thinking of using one as our welcome sign.
To decorate our wedding chairs, we’re thinking of acquiring wooden bride and groom signs.
To keep the rings safe, we’re planning to buy an engraved box that we can keep for years to come. 79
