The perfect pick-me-up I

don’t know about you guys but I’m feeling in a celebratory mood at the moment. This time of the year’s the perfect pick-me-up – I love the longer days, the brighter weather’s making me go outdoors and enjoy what nature has to offer and the hint that summer’s around the corner puts a smile on my face. Not only that, but June also sees the country come together to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, an event that we can all take inspiration from for our own special occasions. 70 years is something to be proud of for sure. My grandparents celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary recently – what an achievement to meet your soulmate, tie the knot and all those years later still be celebrating. My husband and I have been married for 19 years (I’m definitely not old enough!) so we’ve got a while yet before we hit that milestone but when we do, I’m sure we’ll still be partying! arolyne and Ollie met as graduates working for the same IT consultancy. “We’re opposites in a lot of ways, but then exactly the same in others,” says Carolyne. “Ollie makes me laugh and is the kindest person you’ll ever meet. We’re a great team.” Ollie proposed on the duo’s seven-year anniversary at Retreat East near Ipswich. “It was no surprise really, more a gasp of finally!” she recalls. They’d already been ring shopping many months before. “Who cares for tradition? I’d rather wear a ring I absolutely love and share the process together, rather than have him stress about it alone, so I knew it was coming at some point. It was still sweet when it happened though,” she says. They were keen not to follow classic traditions and their day truly reflected who they are and the things they love. “We had a focus on working with suppliers that were environmentally sustainable or had a good moral ethos, specifically supporting small independent businesses where we could,” Carolyne adds. Here, she tells us more about their day… 33

A lot of wedding flowers get binned at the end of the night so we set up a flower station! After the wedding breakfast, all flowers were left on a table with twine, brown paper and a sign inviting guests to make their own bouquets to take home. It was such a big hit!

Before our ceremony we met at the hotel, had a proper hello without all our guests watching and then had some beautiful moments together before the wildness of the day took over.

ecky and Rob met at university at the age of 18. “We did the same drama course and one day Rob asked me out for lunch. We had a sandwich together on the sports field and have been together ever since,” says Becky. Around 13 years later, they decided to tie the knot. “We both travel a lot for work and hadn’t seen each other for about six weeks so while we were away in different parts of the world, we arranged to meet up mid-trip in New York,” recalls Becky. “One night we were drinking tequila and eating burritos when we decided to get married,” she says. “Rob didn’t have the ring with him so instead he bought me an I love tacos t-shirt from a shop above the bar we were in, which was quite funny.” What Becky didn’t know was that Rob was already planning to propose when he got back to the UK. “When we returned we made tacos in our little flat. Rob had already bought a ring and he hid it in one of the shells and then officially asked me to marry him again,” she says. “It was a double surprise as I didn’t know he’d already been planning it.” The duo originally planned their wedding to be in the New Forest where Becky’s from, however due to Covid, plans changed. “We eventually decided that we wanted a venue in central London and the surroundings at Carlton House Terrace were stunning. We loved the beautiful high ceilings and décor,” she says. “We have such fond memories of walking down the aisle and entering the reception area to cheers from all our friends after we’d had our photos taken.”

LOOKING THE PART Becky hit the bridal boutiques with her mum and future mother-in-law and after trying on around five different designs she found the one. “I went back to the first design. It was a Jesus Piero A-line dress with intricate lace detailing to the back, I loved it,” she says. “I don’t like anything too bold and I’m not very tall so I didn’t want something that would swamp me.” Becky bought the dress but then with the wedding being rescheduled it was a while before she could wear it. In the meantime, she found out that she was going to be 12-weeks pregnant on their big day. “I got the dress altered and added extra paneling to make sure it’d still fit but I was so poorly in the early stages of pregnancy that I ended up having it made smaller again as I’d lost weight! When I eventually went for my final fitting, I felt amazing in it – the best I’d felt in a long time, so I knew I’d made the right choice.” Becky accessorised with a lace-trimmed veil, Jimmy Choo platform stiletto sandals and pretty Porcelain earrings. Rob, his groomsmen and both his and Becky’s fathers all wore matching morning suits. “He was happy keeping his look quite casual, but his best man wanted to go all out and wear morning suits so that’s what they ended up with,” says Becky. “I didn’t mind what they wore but I’m glad they went with that choice in the end because it suited the venue perfectly,” Becky says.

BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS Becky’s bouquet was brimming with a variety of foliage mixed with white, pale pink and blue flowers and similar arrangements were placed around the venue. “With me being from the New Forest I wanted to give a nod to that, which is why we had lots of greenery. I’d planned to go for mainly white flowers but when we changed venue, I added pops of colour to suit the décor,” Becky explains. The picturesque fireplace was adorned with blooms, trailing foliage, white drapes and candles placed in lanterns. “This made for a beautiful backdrop for our photos,” she says. For the reception décor, light blue table runners were topped with an array of floral arrangements and silver tea-light candles and a sprig of foliage was placed on blue napkins for each guest.

SWEET TREATS For their favours, Rob chose a shot of limoncello, and Becky chose a small box of chocolates. “With me being pregnant I couldn’t drink but both options went down a storm with our guests,” Becky recalls. “My dad can write in calligraphy, so he created the place names and labels for our favours, they looked fabulous,” she says. The duo opted for a mouthwatering display of cakes. “I’m not a fan of one

They had a variety of flavours including red velvet, chocolate, rainbow sprinkles and there were vegan and gluten free options too. “Our wedding planner made such a great job of the display and with so many designs, it really added a pop of colour to the cake table,” Becky recalls.

GOOSEBUMP MOMENTS The music that Becky walked down to the aisle to was extra special. “My brother’s a musician in the RAF and he’d transposed one of my favourite piano concertos by Ludovico Einaudi, to guitar, which is a very difficult thing to do. He even wrote his own intro piece and played the acoustic version as I walked down aisle. It gave me goosebumps before I even entered the room,” she says. They walked back down aisle as husband and wife to their favourite song, Revival by Gregory Porter and throughout the afternoon, classic jazz favourites were played to create a relaxed ambience. “During the evening we had a live band, Mostmodern Palace. We always knew we wanted something funky rather than a DJ and the band fitted well with the venue. They played a selection of modern pop songs but all in a funk-sole style. They really got the party going and all our guests commented at how amazing they were,” she says.

MIND THAT CHILD After the ceremony, Becky and Rob took a stroll together, which resulted in some fabulous photos. “It was lovely to have some time out together away from everyone and with it being such a hot day it was a great chance to get outside,” Becky says. “As we were walking, we came across an ice cream van that said mind that child on the back, which made for a great photo opp! Some of our friends and family already knew I was pregnant, but we used that photo to let others know the happy news,” she says. “Even though our original wedding plans were put on hold, and I was so poorly with my pregnancy leading up to the day, it all came together perfectly. I felt amazing and it was truly the best day of our lives.”

reddie’s best friends with Stef’s cousin, so the duo knew each other and were Facebook friends for a long time before becoming a couple. “He plucked up the courage to message me back in 2009, and after a couple of meetings at birthdays and on nights out, the rest was history,” says Stef. They’ve been together ever since! Freddie proposed on Christmas Day 2019, a few weeks after their 10-year anniversary. “I’d always thought Christmas Day proposals were a little corny, so he knew I’d never expect it!” she says. “We agreed we weren’t going to do any presents that year, but he surprised me with a box full of little presents and hidden at the bottom was a ring I’d seen a few months before that I’d fallen in love with from Niza Huang,” she adds. A couple of years later, their big day arrived and here, Stef tells us all about it…

I fell in love with the huge bow on my dress. As soon as I tried it on, I felt like myself and the team at Exclusive Alterations in Angel made the sleeves for me whilst making the alterations.

The groomsmen wore beige linen blazers from M&S, their own black chinos and loafers and the same linen tie as Freddie from Moss Bros. Freddie and I have matching King and Queen of Hearts tattoos, so this started a theme for the day. One of my best friends designed our invites for us – a playing card, with illustrations of Freddie and I included. I used the template throughout our styling. 46

As the wedding was in August, Freddie wanted something light in colour. He wore a doublebreasted seersucker suit in a pale pink/beige colour that looked really cool. He accessorised with a plain pair of white leather trainers that suited our laid-back vibe.

We both work in Islington, so we always knew we wanted Islington Town Hall for the ceremony.

Our bridesmaids each wore midi, satin dress in a shade of lilac. I wanted them all to be comfortable and knew we’d struggle to settle on the same dress for all of them, so I was happy for them to pick.

We knew pretty quickly that The Depot was perfect for us – it was big enough for all of our guests, catering and drinks were in-house and the staff were so friendly and easy to work with.

Our table plan and menus were designed around the playing card theme.

REAL WEDDING

My auntie is an amazing florist, so we always knew she’d do our flowers. I wanted lots of colour and displays filled with hydrangeas, anthuriums and orchids, and minimal foliage.

The bouquets were so perfect - I didn’t put mine down for a very long time!

For our centrepieces we used smaller arrangements and bud vases along the tables.

Callie from Studio Dine helped with our styling. We had giant balloons suspended from the ceiling in bright shades of coral.

We had dried and faux flowers, mixed with fresh, to create bigger installations behind the top table, on the bar and by the entrance.

For our favours we sourced small bottles of Aperol Spritz to go on each place setting – they tied in perfectly with the colour scheme and went down a treat. 47

We finished off the tables with coral linen napkins and coloured dinner candles.

My parents have a vintage Fiat 500 that was being refurbished. We had it sprayed white and driven to the venue in the morning and it worked as a great photo opportunity in the courtyard.

For our cakes we had a delicious Victoria Sponge with buttercream icing and an incredible gluten-free chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream and salted caramel fudge, topped with edible sugar pearls.

Throughout the day, my parents’ old friends Claudio and Raffaele played the guitar and accordion. They even played at my parents’ wedding nearly 40 years ago! It was something different for a lot of our friends and they loved the old Italian vibe.

Freddie’s named after an old British cyclist, and he’s a big cycling fan. There’s a bike shop just around the corner from the Town Hall, so we just had to have some photos taken there and they’re some of our favourites from the day.

Our good friend Tony Perry was our DJ for the evening. We’d never have even considered another DJ but it was brilliant. One of our best friends Ross was our Master of Ceremony. He surprised us with a personalised game of Mr & Mrs which had everyone in stitches. Definitely a standout moment of the day.

All of the speeches were so good – funny, perfectly timed and so well delivered.

Giada Prini of Enchanting Weddings & Events teamed up with a range of local suppliers to bring her vision to life. “The whole concept was based around the contrast between the countryside atmosphere and the spring colours of the ceremony and reception space, and it looked stunning,” she says. “I was inspired by a pastel sunset hue from sand to lilac. These delicate shades brought my imagination to life! I searched for elements of the design that resonated with the colour palette and used them throughout the styling to create a cohesive look,” she adds. LUXURY FLORALS When it came to the ceremony and reception space, Giada brought the outside in. “Floral opulence is the best way to describe this look. The vines that were just starting to bud with a hint of green foliage were matched perfectly with the pink and white blossom trees, creating an elegant and timeless atmosphere not easy to forget!” she says.

How to inject seasonal brights into every element of your wedding…

FLOWERS Choosing the colours for your flowers and foliage can take time. Your bouquet should ideally complement your dress and your floral décor should express your personal preferences as a couple. I work with my brides to design the whole floral package and recommend using vibrant seasonal blooms to add a splash of colour while keeping your costs down. You don’t have to follow a trend if you don’t feel like it. Be bold and don’t play safe. Some colours are natural enhancers for each season. Here are some of my favourite combos: ❤ Blush, frost, and boysenberry are calm and romantically rich autumnal shades for boho weddings. ❤ Pineapple, charcoal grey and cardinal red are a sophisticated combo for an industrial-chic theme. ❤ Hunter green, orange, and brown with peaches and burgundies are luxurious and energetic for a country style. ❤ For a nautical or beach settings, I love hot maroon, cameo pink, and Aegean blue. ❤ Silver, beige, and dove grey are a whimsical combo for autumnal nuptials. CAKE If you choose a neutral palette for your décor, then your cake can be the place to add a burst of colour. The most traditional way is to incorporate some fresh flowers from your bouquet, but this won’t make the biggest impact if your flowers are neutral. Instead, smother your cake in edible flowers for a wild multicoloured vibe. You can also bring the colours of your flowers on to your cake’s surface. People are scared of going for a non-white toned cake but don’t need to be. Add texture in different shades with edible embellishments. A cascading waterfall of bright rice paper features, chocolate details, fruits, macrons, meringues, piped details all look amazing. If you match the tiers to one colour you can get away with more details like extra piping, textural features, flowers and other adornments. Different coloured tiers can be statement enough and need less adding to the finished showstopper. It’s a fine line between fun and too much. Choose a designer who has a good eye for colours and uses them confidently, then give them some starting points and trust their instinct! You’re hiring them for their skills, and most will provide mock up drawings before the design is set in stone, so you can tone it down if you need to. Think about complementing your floral palette by adding napkin shades that pop, coloured glassware, lively dinner candles, and place cards and menus with bright details. You could add seasonal fruit to your table, fabric and crockery with floral prints or modern patterns, bright velvet dining chairs instead of wooden ones, and pick focal points of your venue for some installations of eyecatching artwork. The key is to create a palette that balances neutral and bold colours, so the hues each stand out beautifully on their own and complement one another in a way that doesn’t feel too cluttered or overwhelming. I’d also suggest that, if having a day that feels uplifting and vibrant is important to you, make sure you choose a venue with lots of natural light. Look for a location with plenty of outdoor areas and big windows and consider shifting your timeline so that more of the details can be enjoyed during the daytime. For the evening, why not get some cool uplighters or neon tubes in the shades you love – and continue telling that colour story up to the end of your celebrations. DRESS On your big day you want to create a statement look with something that sets you apart and expresses your personality and adding colour to your bridal attire can do just that! My personal favourite is adding different shades to a veil. The simplest way to add colour would be by wearing bright shoes. The extent to which your shoes will be on display on your wedding day will depend on the length and silhouette of your gown. It can be a subtle, occasional hint of bright pink under a ball gown, or a full-on view with a shorter midi-length design. Using coloured beading and gemstones or handmade details such as flowers or a bow are other stylish and sophisticated ways to add your chosen shade to your outfit. For a subtle touch, add a colourful lining or an underskirt to give your dress a multi-shade tone, such as blush or gold. For a cheekier interpretation of this, we could introduce bridal petticoats in crinoline for the perfect pop of colour.
