Launched in 2018 The Glass House is a beautiful venue in Lancashire, nestled in the picturesque rolling landscape of the Fylde countryside. Blending modern elegance with charm and romance this unique and neutralvenue can be transformed into your theme but also looks beautiful with minimal styling. Twinkling fairy lights, glittering crystal chandeliers, crisp modern lines and glass walls blend seamlessly with wooden beams and endless countryside views to capture the beautiful elegance of an English wedding. The Glass House is immediately impressive with a perfect layout for weddings with everything in one room that can be separated by glamorous mirrored bifold doors. The floor-to-ceiling windows and long bi-fold glass doors bring the outside inside offering all the benefits of an outdoor wedding with the comfort of a roof to shelter guests from unreliable British weather. A beautiful blank canvas in a spectacular setting yet close to the M55 and a short drive away from Blackpool, Poulton-Le-Fylde, Lytham, St Anne’s, Fleetwood and Preston. Dan Wootton Photography

F

or me, spring is a wonderful time of year. I love seeing nature come alive again, and being able to go outside without it being dark is something I’ve truly missed. Although I adore Christmas (who doesn’t?) I’m not a fan of the winter months and am so glad we can finally say hello to spring! With a new season comes lots of wonderful real weddings, and I can’t wait to hear from those of you who are set to tie the knot in the next few months. As many of you know, my wedding is in July 2022, so we’re finally in the home stretch and counting down the days. We opted for a summer wedding, partly due to my disdain for the cold weather, but also because when we got engaged in 2020 we were in the middle of one of the many lockdowns and were unsure if we’d be able to get married anytime soon. We booked our venue for 18 months later, and here we are about to walk down the aisle and say ‘I do’. For those of you who are newly engaged, believe me when I tell you that your day will arrive in the blink of an eye! My number one piece of advice is to take your time and enjoy the planning process. In this issue, photographers show some of their favourite images, local experts answer your hot topic questions and we reveal the latest news from around the North West. Remember, if you’ve recently celebrated your day or have been involved with a shoot, you can submit it at www.yournorthwest.wedding/get-involved-real-wedding

LOCAL NEWS A PIECE OF HISTORY Rydal Mount can now be booked by couples wanting to tie the knot in the house or garden where William Wordsworth spent most of his life. Wedding guests will have access to the dining room and the drawing room where Wordsworth is thought to have penned his world-famous poem, Daffodils. There is also space on the two lawns in the beautiful gardens for marquees. The house, between Ambleside and Grasmere, is on a hillside with views over Windermere and Rydal Water and the surrounding fells. A focus on romantic literature, it was Wordsworth’s family home from 1813 until his death in 1850 at the age of 80. Couples will have the option to have a tree planted in Wordsworth’s garden or even a permanent seat in their name. And to mark their first anniversary, couples will be able to book a private dining experience at the house. Wedding manager Annabel Candler said: “Having a wedding in a historic place such as this adds the couple’s beautiful story to the romance of the past. This is a very special venue indeed. Rydal Mount continues to be owned by the Wordsworth family and retains the feel of

PLANNED TO PERFECTION Planner and venue manager Weddings by Annabel has been selected as a finalist for the Guides for Brides Customer Service Award. Annabel said: “After a testing couple of years where I became more of a wedding coach and counsellor than a planner, this is a wonderful achievement even if I don’t get further. My business is growing and developing into something that I’m truly proud of. The nasty pandemic helped me delve down the venue management path, and now I have three glorious places to look after in Cumbria. My private clients are more like friends, and I have taken on help for 2022. Exciting times ahead!” Annabel has also established a non-wedding part of her business, Creativise Events, which caters for street events, private parties and such. “I have been involved with many a wonderful event over the years but having weddings in my title confused a lot of people,” says Annabel. “Creativise will focus on making events engaging, interactive and entertaining.” Visit www.weddingsbyannabel.co.uk and www.creativiseevents.co.uk for more.

The Alchemist is returning to its roots with an extensive refurbishment of its flagship Manchester venue, The Alchemist Spinningfields. Set to re-open in March, the refined refurbishment will be a significant evolution in design for The Alchemist. The cosmic-inspired renovation of the all-day dining and cocktail space will include the addition of two new private areas that will be perfect for late-night cocktails or hen and stag dos. Simon Potts, the CEO, said: “The Alchemist footprint has spread across the UK over the last few years, as we’ve taken our hospitality brand down to London and up to Scotland, but we’ve always remained a Manchester company at heart. The Spinningfields venue is an institution and much loved by our teams and guests alike; we look forward to bringing our new design direction to the city. CONGRATULATIONS! The Wellbeing Farm was crowned the winner of the Ethical, Responsible and Sustainable category at the Lancashire Tourism Awards 2021. The awards celebrate excellence across a wide range of visitor economy businesses, revealing the brightest and best stars working in Lancashire tourism today. The Wellbeing Farm was recognised for its commitment to being sustainable, responsible and ethical in how they operate and interact with customers, the wider community and the environment. The farm, which is powered by a wind turbine, has been working on sustainability since it opened in 2013 and last year produced a dedicated sustainability website that highlighted the work done towards each of the 12 Sustainable Development Goals. Celia Gaze, the founder and managing director of The Wellbeing Farm, tells us: “During lockdown, we decided to focus on our sustainability work, and the time spent is paying off. Having represented independent hospitality businesses at a special fringe event at COP26 in Glasgow last year, winning an award in this category is an important achievement.” Head over to www.thewellbeingfarm.co.uk to find out more.

WIN A PRE-WEDDING PHOTO SHOOT!

We’ve teamed up with Tiffany LS Photography to offer one lucky reader a pre-wedding photo shoot worth an amazing £100. We spoke to Tiffany to find out more about her company: “I’m a natural light photographer. My style is candid, capturing moments as naturally as possible, showing raw emotion and highlighting the beauty in the surrounding environment. I love documenting special, once-in-a-lifetime moments. And what could be more beautiful than an engagement or wedding? I have a relaxed, flexible approach to shooting weddings. I hope to put clients at ease, making the experience as enjoyable as possible. I don’t enjoy being in front of the camera myself, and so empathise completely with couples that are a little shy or feel slightly awkward having their photo taken! “I’m extremely grateful to my wonderfully supportive client base. They have enabled my business to grow beyond what I had hoped for in such a short space of time. I have built a solid reputation, with many of my clients coming to me through word of mouth. I have been nominated for several awards, and thank all my wonderful couples that have voted for me. I am fortunate enough to have had my work chosen to be on the cover of two issues of Your North West Wedding and the front of the Lancashire Post. To see my work published means so much. My business is an extension of me and to share my work through capturing so many special moments is a joy!” The photo shoot needs to take place in Leyland, Lancashire. eather and Dave met through a mutual friend. “We liked similar things and hit it off right away,” says Heather. “Dave proposed one December. He had put a selection of rings on hold at a jeweller and took me to see them the day after. It was a complete surprise.” Here the bride shares some of her favourite moments from their big day...

29

We chose to tie the knot at The Gibbon Bridge Hotel, which was perfect. We got married 22 years after our first date.

For our favours, we gave our guests lottery cards and Cancer Research pins.

Champagne Cakes in Preston provided our cake.

30

Dave and I chose a navy and pink theme with lots of candles and floral arrangements everywhere.

Our beautiful flowers were from Buds and Bloom.

I chose an Anna Sorrano gown and accessorised it with a Bolero jacket and jewellery from Peacock & May.

REAL WEDDINGS

The bridesmaids and flowergirls opted for navy dresses. Dave wore a stylish suit from Cosgroves.

A funny moment was how slow the flowergirls walked down the aisle. To keep our guests entertained, we had a pianist perform during the meal.

Everyone really enjoyed the day. We had a small wedding with close family and special friends. We felt so happy and truly blessed. Everything was special, and we couldn’t fault a thing.

REAL WEDDINGS

S

ara and Luke met in 2012 on Twitter. “Following our online friendship, we started writing letters to each other, and one day, we decided to meet up,” says Sara. “We didn’t live near each other, so we never thought anything of our relationship other than a friendship. However, once we met, we were inseparable, and Luke asked me to be his girlfriend. From 2012 until 2018, we had a longdistance relationship whilst we completed our studies. We would travel by train to see each other, spending our weekends and school holidays together. Once we started our careers, we moved in with my parents while we saved for our house, which we bought in 2019. Over the years, we have grown together as a couple and become a team. A lot has changed in the past 10 years, but our friendship and love for each other has been consistent and grown stronger.” Luke proposed in April 2020. “It was a spontaneous moment,” shares the bride. “He said that he had been thinking about it for a while, and one day he just went for it. He proposed during the first national lockdown at home. We were in bed, and he just randomly asked me. I was shocked, and it was a complete surprise! We had a Zoom party that evening with our family, and we shared the news with them and celebrated virtually. Because of COVID-19, we were reluctant to start wedding plans, however, in May 2021, we started the search and booked our wedding for later in the year.”

SETTING THE SCENE “The Lake District has always been Luke’s favourite place to visit,” explains Sara. “We wanted a venue where we could celebrate with our closest family and friends. We came across Broadoaks Country House and saw that we could hire the space exclusively. We travelled up to Cumbria to visit and booked it immediately after the viewing. It was the only place we saw, and we instantly fell in love with it. It has a private and intimate atmosphere, and they were able to accommodate the whole wedding party overnight, which was important to us.” Sara and Luke made their favours which doubled up as place names. “I filled small mason jars with chocolates and stuck personalised vinyl stickers on them,” recalls the bride. “We handtied ribbon to each one to tie in with our colour scheme.” “We wanted a more casual seating arrangement and weren’t keen on a top table, so we decided to have a U-shaped table, which meant we could see everyone and chat throughout the wedding breakfast,” adds Sara. “For the centrepieces, we had a mixture of candles and lanterns. I added lantern toppers which I made from greenery and red berries.” Moss and Bloom provided the couple’s flowers. “I wanted something which I could keep and was sustainable,” reveals the bride. “They used a mixture of dried and faux blooms, and to create a rustic look, we incorporated cabernet colours.” The happy couple chose a semi-naked cake with gold leaf printing and flowers from Love At First Bite by Amber.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS “I wore a Stella York gown called 7169 from Burr Bridal,” says Sara.

35

“I didn’t have a clue what I would wear, and I didn’t think I’d go for an actual wedding dress, but when I tried it on, it felt perfect. I’d convinced Luke I was wearing a red dress, and one of the first things he said to me at the aisle was ‘that’s a funny red dress’, which made us both smile.” Luke opted for a tweed waistcoat and blazer from Slater Menswear, a knitted wine-coloured bow tie and Dr Martens. The bridesmaids chose maxi dresses with a heavy lace bodice and high neckline from JJ’s House.

TIME TO CELEBRATE “We had a jukebox in the evening from Timewarp Jukeboxes,” shares the bride. “It was a real centrepiece, and our guests loved selecting their favourite songs. We also hired tipi tents from The Enchanted Tent Company that were set up for the children so they could relax in their own space.”

MEMORABLE MOMENTS “On the day of the wedding, I was super excited and the happiest I’ve ever felt in my entire life,” explains Sara. “I’d had a lot of nerves in the run-up to the wedding, and by the time it arrived, I felt so ready. Luke was incredibly nervous in the morning, and his best man recalls that he didn’t talk for the whole car journey. We relished the service, exchanging our vows and making lifelong promises to each other. After the ceremony, everything felt so surreal. We couldn’t believe that we were once teenagers dating, and now we’re a married couple ready for the rest of our lives together.” Sara’s father nearly didn’t make the wedding ceremony. “He was caught in traffic from road works,” recalls the bride. “Storm Arwen had caused lots of issues for us over that weekend. The whole morning, I was completely unaware that he almost didn’t make it. I went down for my pre-ceremony interview with the registrar, and my dad walked through the door with five minutes to spare. It wasn’t until he arrived that I realised he was so late!” “One of the funniest things from our wedding day was hearing what our five-year-old nephew said to our photographer,” adds Sara. “While taking photos of our guests, our cheeky nephew said: ‘uncle Luke’s camera is bigger than yours!’ Luke had taken up wildlife photography the year before and invested in some large lenses for that particular type of photography.” The lovebirds had support from their suppliers. “Our wedding coordinator, Mel from Broadoaks Country House, was truly amazing,” reveals the bride. “The night before the wedding, she had a last-minute meeting with me to run through the day to ease my nerves. Our photographer, Adam from AJ Photography, was fantastic from start to finish. He was great at settling our nerves, and he transported the rings from the bridal suite to the best man, ready for the ceremony. We felt comfortable and relaxed around him, and everyone made lovely comments about his professionalism.”

HONEYMOON “After the wedding, we’d booked to stay in Edenborough for a few nights as a minimoon,” says Sara. “We had one lovely night there and then realised we missed being in the Lake District, so we cancelled our plans and returned to Cumbria. We wanted a more chilled experience rather than a busy city. We had a lovely few days, walking, eating out in country pubs and relaxing.”

think we can all agree that 2021 was a strange year for weddings. With so much uncertainty and changing restrictions, we’ve seen a mixture of micro and large celebrations. As a send-off to 2021, we’ve asked local photographers to send in some of their favourite wedding pictures from last year.

“The day before Natalie and Ryk’s wedding was torrential rain, and we were so lucky that we had such glorious sunshine! I love these images as I feel it captures the glamour and elegance of their day.” – Katie Green from DaisyBell Photography.

“Emma and Rob had a small wedding with just 14 people there, and when I took them away for some photos together, I asked them what was their favourite joke. Rob whispered to Emma, and said he could only think of rude ones and this was their reaction.” – Christina Davies from Fish 2 Photography.

“This was taken on a hot, sunny bank holiday Monday. The place was so busy that it took some work to get photos without other people in, and I can’t count how many times the bride and groom were stopped and congratulated.” – Marina from Marina Walker Photo. “Smoke bombs are a firm favourite for couples wanting to add a splash of colour to their images.” – Tiffany Skinner from Tiffany LS Photography.

“The couple had their traditional Muslim wedding ceremony in a tipi in the middle of a field in Yorkshire. I loved that the bride wore trainers and how the couple had a carefree approach to their day.” – Tanya Weekes.

“Catrin and Charlie got married in August last year. They were one of the few people who had actually planned to get married in 2021. The day had been grey and a bit rainy, and we decided to head to Worden Park on the way to the venue to capture a few photos. We saw these wildflowers, and I captured this super cute moment between them.” – Christina from Fish 2 Photography.

“Sophia and Dean were married at a candlelit Mottram Hall Hotel in Cheshire. Although I have chosen a shot from outside there were so many picture-perfect spots, which is one of the things I loved about this venue.” – Tanya Weekes.

“This wedding was at a church in Ormskirk. The bride and groom wanted some photos at one of the church doors, just after the ceremony. The wind blew the veil, and I snuck underneath for a few shots.” – Marina Walker from Marina Walker Photo.

“I love this image from Hannah and Harry’s wedding because of the memory rather than a picture-perfect photo. They were my first wedding after the restrictions lifted in May last year, and one thing I love at weddings is feeling part of the day. This is the send off I got when I said I was leaving. I got cheered, waved and rushed at by the groom.” – Christina from Fish 2 Photography.

Here come the girls County Wedding Magazines senior editor Melissa Barker shares her wedding planning journey

I

can’t believe that in just a few months time I’ll officially become Mrs Cullen – eek! Dave and I have been engaged since Christmas Day 2020 and are due to get married this July. With all of the uncertantity surrounding COVID-19 restrictions, it’s been quite a stressful journey. However, now that the date is drawing closer I’m finally starting to feel excited. In this issue, read all about my experience going shopping for the bridesmaids’ dresses.

DRESSED TO IMPRESS

a Monday when it was quieter and I’m so glad we did! The consultant was absolutely lovely and couldn’t do enough for us. She made Kelly feel amazing and we didn’t feel pressured at all. With no time constraint, Kelly was able to try on every dress that caught her eye – it was a struggle to choose just one, she looked and felt stunning in them all. She eventually chose the same dress as Olivia, and in my humble (non-biased) opinion, they all look fabulous and I can’t wait to walk down the aisle with my beautiful friends. Overall, shopping together was a nice experience and it was great spending time with the girls, but I’d definitely recommend that fellow brides-to-be start shopping for dresses sooner rather than later – particularly if you have got quite a few bridesmaids! I also can’t stress enough to avoid popular visiting times at your chosen boutiques. It will create a completely different experience and ensured everyone feels relaxed and can enjoy it. Check out the next issue where I’ll be discussing our search for the groomsmen’s outfits and a last-minute videographer.

Choosing who I wanted to be my bridesmaids was one of the easiest decisions I had to make. My sister-in-law, Nolwenn, has been part of the family for a few years now and I really wanted to involve her in our day, so I was pleased when she wanted to be one of my bridesmaids! I also asked my two best friends and fellow County Wedding Magazines editors, Kelly and Olivia, who were over the moon when I asked them (virtually) during one of the many lockdowns. With the easy bit done, we were on to the task of choosing their bridesmaids’ dresses. With conflicting schedules and unpredictable restrictions it was hard to decide on a date that worked for everyone but we were eventually able to book an appointment for the beginning of December 2021. Shopping for their outfits was one of the things I was most excited about when we got

engaged. I love all the girls dearly and really wanted them to feel special and a part of our big day, so making sure that they were comfortable was my number one priority. I wanted them to choose their own style and the only thing I asked was that all the dresses were sage green, which worked out perfectly as the girls all love that colour – it was meant to be! We booked a Saturday appointment and oh my gosh it was busy! The girls had to share a changing room and only managed to try on a handful of dresses before our time was up. What shocked us all was just how long the dresses take to come into the store. Starting our shopping eight months early we all thought we’d have plenty of time to shop around, but we found that all of the gowns wouldn’t be in the store until early May 2022, which would only leave us with two months for alterations – this of course, sent my stress levels through the roof! Despite all of the craziness and the insane amount of people in the boutique, Olivia and Nolwenn both managed to find their dresses on that first visit; Nolwenn opted for a sleeveless A-line gown and Olivia chose a similar style but with floaty off-the-shoulder straps. Kelly and I both felt overwhelmed by the first appointment, and sadly she came away empty handed, so we decided to go back on

Here are some things that we’ve learned during wedding planning.

BRIDE’S DIARY

VENUE

PHOTOGRAPHER

❤ Make sure a registrar or celebrant is available on your wedding day before confirming with the venue. ❤ Find out what is and what isn’t included in the booking price. ❤ Check whether your venue has any sound limiters or a curfew in place. ❤ Ensure the venue has liability insurance in case the worst was to happen. ❤ How will the venue handle poor weather or last-minute changes? ❤ Before booking, check the venue’s COVID-19 policies.

❤ If like me, you’re nervous or unsure in front of the camera book a prewedding shoot – it really does make a difference. ❤ Before booking, decide on what style of photography you like and set a budget. ❤ Lots of photographers don’t have prices stated on their website; find five you like and email them all asking for quotes so that you can compare. ❤ Find out how many images you’ll be receiving and how long your photographer will spend with you on the day. ❤ Most suppliers will require a meal, so factor that into your catering budget and check if they have any dietary requirements. ❤ You’ll be spending a large portion of the day with your photographer, so it’s important you get on well, and they make you feel relaxed.

FLOWERS ❤ Some flowers are seasonal and may not be available at the time of year you’re getting married, so be prepared to discuss this with your florist. ❤ Your supplier will have a wealth of knowledge and will be able to advise you on what blooms will suit your day. ❤ Check your quotes include VAT. ❤ Think carefully about if you’d like real or dried flowers. If you’re unsure it may be worth talking to a few different companies to discuss the pros and cons. ❤ Your florist should suggest ways you can save money, for example, re-using blooms from your ceremony for the reception. ❤ There are so many ways that you can preserve your flowers after the wedding, so it’s worth looking at your options.

WEDDING DRESS ❤ Try on a variety of styles to find what best suits your shape. ❤ Trust your bridal consultant and listen to their recommendations, after all, they’re the experts. ❤ Choose a dress that you feel comfortable in and makes you feel like the best version of yourself. ❤ Wear white or skin-coloured underwear to your appointment. ❤ Start shopping nine to 12 months before the wedding to ensure you have plenty of time to get the gown in-store and alterations to be done. ❤ The shopping process can be daunting, so don’t feel pressured to purchase a dress for the sake of it, when you find the right gown, you’ll know it. 49

EXPERT ADVICE

HOT TOPIC: BELOVED PETS How can we incorporate our beloved pooch into our big day? Having your canine companion involved in your big day is incredibly important as they are a large part of the family. Look for a company that offers a range of pet care services to help your big day run smoothly, including the ceremony and photography assistance, full daycare, overnight boarding and even transport between locations. By hiring a professional, you can ensure your dog is part of your day without having to worry. Here at Thea’s Lakeland Walks, we have great working relationships with an abundance of hotels across Cumbria and surrounding areas, ensuring your dog gets exceptional care whilst fulfilling its role as a very important pet.

SPRING FEVER My mum wants to wear a standout hat for my spring wedding. What design and colours would you suggest? For a hat that will stand out from the crowd, it needs to be made to measure. Not only will it look great with her dress, but it will also match her personality. Book a one-to-one personal appointment, where you will go through your ideas with a professional and create a bespoke, couture creation that will wow everyone. A PIECE OF ART I want my wedding dress to stand out and look amazing. Do you have any ideas of how I can do this? A bespoke hand-painted gown is sure to make you stand out on your big day. At Tropical Ever After, we design and create one of a kind, tailored, hand-painted wedding dresses for women who reach for their dreams and are not afraid to go beyond the usual standards. If layers of tulle and laces seem inappropriate for your wedding ceremony, opt for something perfectly tailored to your figure. When choosing your dream dress, you can pick a ready-made creation that will be tailored to your measurements or create a bespoke design especially for you, fitted to your figure with personal character. When looking for your dress, opt for a style that will reflect your personality. We can also provide bespoke gowns for the bridesmaids, flowergirls and matching accessories for the groomsmen. Edyta Ziomek www.tropicaleverafter.com

JUST ONE SLICE We’re not big fans of cake and would love to have a cheese version instead. What flavours and designs would you suggest for a spring wedding? When it comes to cheese wedding cakes, the flavours aren’t something you need to consider like you would with a usual wedding cake. Depending on the number of tiers, you can include a range of different flavours to suit everyone’s preferences. There are so many variations on the market, so whatever you like, chances are many of your guests will like it also. You could have two cheddars which taste nice, one with a shiny view of the outside like a processed cheese or a nice farmhouse style, which is encrusted in a salty thicker outer layer that gives it the appearance you want for your cake. Just because it’s cheese doesn’t mean it can’t be decorated with flowers or lace. For an autumnal wedding, you could place it on a nice wooden board with black grapes, figs and other darker coloured fruit, but for spring, perhaps on a frosted glass plate, with lace and flowers to tie in with your theme. To add a splash of colour, go with coloured fruits like strawberries, figs and greenery. Stay away from coloured cheeses and go with blues, brie, white hard options to keep the colours light and fresh. Sarah Atkinson www.applebycreamery.co.uk

DRESSED TO IMPRESS My mum and dad want to wear outfits that will tie in with our spring theme. What style and colours are popular right now? Spring makes us think of beautiful gardens filled with a plethora of colours such as soft pastels and bold hues along with lush greenery. Most dads will want to wear their new suit again. Navy or grey are a good canvas to start with that can be built on with any of your chosen colours – our Whalley Menswear store offers both colours in all sizes. Remember your mum should feel fabulous, so we suggest she wears something she feels comfortable in. Neutrals, navy, bright pink, turquoise and ever-popular white and black polka dots are great options. This season has lots of prints, subtle navy with lilac, muted greens with magenta, warm ambers and bright and bold primary colours. Sue Watson www.cosgrovesfashion.com 56

Intimate romance

INTIMATE WEDDING INSPIRATION

How to plan a small celebration

A

lthough the restrictions on weddings have been lifted, here at Your North West Wedding, we’ve seen a rise in the number of couples choosing to have a small wedding. To help you create the perfect celebration, we’ve rounded up some of the region’s finest suppliers and asked for their top tips on creating a fabulous wedding with a small guest list.

Venue styling ideas

My main piece of advice would be to focus on the smaller details. The great thing about having an intimate wedding is it allows you to be more creative. Choose a theme and keep it consistent. For example, once you have chosen your flowers, use them throughout the day. Incorporate them within your welcome drinks, table settings and on the back of your chair sashes. As you don’t have as many people to cater for, you really can go the extra mile with your décor. When it comes to your tables, think of charger plates with mixed linen. Napkins can be expensive when you have to cater for the higher end of guest numbers, however, if your wedding is more intimate, it’s a great way to give your table the wow factor. Personalised menus and favours will also give your wedding a personalised touch. Victoria Rawlins from Blossom & Bows events@blossomandbows.com | www.instagram.com/blossomandbowseventhire

Choosing your flowers

Your big-day blooms are a great way of showing your personalities and incorporating your chosen theme or colour scheme. You can opt for a wide variety of arrangements, and by using them on a smaller scale, you’ll be able to save money. Keep in mind that some flowers are seasonal and may be difficult to source or too expensive to purchase at different times of the year. If you have your heart set on a particular flower, talk to your florist and ask if there are any alternatives or if there’s any way you can purchase artificial versions. These often look great and can be preserved as a memento of your special day. Although your wedding is small, it doesn’t mean you can’t make the space beautiful. Look for table arrangements, flower walls, bouquets, buttonholes and flower crowns. The list is endless. Skim through social media and magazines to try and find inspiration to show your chosen supplier so they have something to work with.

Top stationery tips

Your closest family and friends are the people most likely to keep your invitations and pop their place card in a memory box to remember your big day. An intimate wedding gives you the perfect opportunity to make a statement with your stationery. Add some final touches to your invitations, such as wax seals and vellum overlays which are very much on trend this season. Think about adding some personal touches to your on the day stationery too. Why not include a memory or quote for each guest to make them feel extra special? When searching for a wedding stationer, look for someone who doesn’t have a minimum order value or quantity, so you aren’t paying over the odds for what you need. If you’re on a tight budget, be upfront and discuss this with your designer so they can best advise you from the beginning. Laura Luhrs from Forever Begins Paper Studio 07710 893 841 | www.foreverbegins.co.uk

Picking a cake design

An intimate wedding cake can still have a large impact. Small creations don’t have to be understated and should still taste just as amazing. Dummy tiers made from polystyrene will allow you to create the wow factor without an abundance of leftovers. If there are changes required with your date or guest numbers, try to let your supplier know as soon as possible to give them the best chance to accommodate these. Make sure you fully understand the terms and conditions regarding cancellation policies, booking fees, payments and rescheduling. Most importantly, enjoy the process! 64

Incorporating alpacas into your day

When thinking about your wedding and deciding on what you want to include, remember this is a one-off special day and one that you will want to remember. If you love alpacas, this is the perfect time to share them with your friends and family. There are some considerations to take into account when having something out of the ordinary at your wedding, especially animals. Make sure the venue you choose is happy to have them there. If this is on the top of your wishlist, check it out sooner rather than later, as you may have to consider a different venue. We have a list of properties that are happy to have our alpacas, but if they’re not on the list, they may have never have had the opportunity before. We will always do a pre-wedding visit with new venues to make sure they are happy to welcome our alpacas. The best thing about alpacas is that it doesn’t matter how many guests you have, the age range of your friends and family or whether there are any children, alpacas are for everyone and will look great in your wedding album. Jane and Paul Colman from Wreay Syke Alpacas 07866 918 550 | www.wreaysykealpacas.co.uk

Choosing the perfect wedding dress

Just because you’re having a small wedding doesn’t mean you can’t go all out on the dress or even wear two if the mood strikes. Remember made-to-order dresses can take up to six months to be made and delivered to your chosen boutique, so start shopping with plenty of time to spare. Around nine to 12 months before is a good starting point. If you don’t have loads of time on your hands, then don’t panic! Talk to your bridal boutique, they may be able to order certain dresses in a shorter amount of time or offer a selection of off-the-peg gowns, which means you can take them away on the day of your appointment. If you have a budget in mind, then it’s always a good idea to ask the boutiques you’re planning to visit what their price ranges are. During your appointment, don’t be afraid to ask questions, and remember to have fun and enjoy the experience. 67

I

“ met with Liv from Holesfoot to see the new venue before it opened,” says the shoot organiser and photographer Mindy Coe. “I wanted to create a photo shoot which put an emphasis on the venue’s gorgeous Italian gardens that can be used for weddings all year round. The lovely English country home, which is used as the main wedding space, has a cosy, wintry feel which inspired our earthy/seasonal theme. We used all British grown flowers or foraged materials as we wanted to embrace the elements and have as little impact on our environment as possible. The tablescape was set up for an intimate wedding undercover to escape the rain in the Italian garden, which has a secret garden feel. All the suppliers involved were local to the Lake District and passionate about sustainable weddings.”

T

his styled shoot was inspired by the Beatle’s song Here Comes The Sun. “I used to play it in the house and sing it to my kids during lockdown,” says shoot organise Zayna B from ZAZevents. “The song is all about melting away the negative feelings and letting the positive in, and that’s exactly what I wanted to create with this shoot. We wanted to showcase how you can have a wedding destination at home or hen do without travelling and still experience something out of this world! Our bold colour palette incorporates elements of Moroccan culture, nature and spirit. The hot pinks represent the abundance of Bougainvillaea flowers paired with deep turquoise tones, which represent the sea, and colourfully painted doorways you will find in North Morocco. The accent colour of yellow brings warmth and sunshine, while orange symbolises excitement and brings energy to the design. The shoot was full of vibrant colours, positive vibes and reflects the joy and fun of the day from our talented suppliers and wonderful models from the North West.” 73

Iconic Italian luxury tailored menswear brand Canali, has opened it’s flagship store in London. Located on the corner of New Bond Street and Brooks Street, conceived by the strategic design studio Hangar Design Group, the interior brings together the aesthetic style of the Canali fashion house and Milan. Elegantly decorated, the boutique, spreading over 310 square metres, is an ode to the magnificent Milanese residential architecture of the early to mid-20th century. SMOOTH OPERATOR

Award-winning haircare brand, Innersense Organic Beauty, has launched Serenity Smoothing Cream (£24), a nutrient-rich formula suitable for all hair types delivering a flawless and bouncy blow dry with a sleek look. Baobab and frangipani help to lock in moisture, as well as providing care for hair exposed to heated styling tools and strengthening strands without weighing them down. Meanwhile, vitamin-rich mango seed butter, avocado and coconut oils nourish and boost hydration while smoothing the cuticle to reduce frizz. Find it at www.naturisimo.com 90

A GROWER, NOT A THROWER

Recycling in the beauty industry is notoriously difficult, but here’s a clever invention by award-winning eco-pencil company Sprout World, designed not only to reduce waste, but to give something beautiful and useful back to the planet – recycling at its finest I have to say! Introducing Sprout Makeup Pencils (£9.95), the world’s first zero-waste plantable make-up pencils. Yep, plantable! Just use as normal and instead of throwing them away when they become too small to use, flip them around, stick the end into a pot of damp soil and ta-da – beautiful, bee-friendly wildflowers will start to sprout within 1-2 weeks. Check out www.sproutworld.com

CHILLED-OUT SKIN

Adaptogens have been used for thousands of years in ancient Chinese medicine and ayurvedic remedies to help mitigate the effects of stress on the body, and until recently have mostly been used in herbal supplements and teas to regulate stress levels. But they could also offer the solution to stressed-out skin. MARA Volcanic Sea Clay Detox Masque (£48) contains aswagandha, a skin-strengthening herb and adaptogen powered by antioxidants, which works to fight free radicals, boost hydration and soothe stressed-out, blemish-prone skin. Find it at www.cultbeauty.co.uk

I’ve only been using it for a couple of days and my dry skin is already showing signs of improvement. Find it at www.qandaskin.com

Having seen Skin Proud Frozen Over (£16.95) go viral on TikTok I was keen to know more about this cryotherapy gel moisturiser. Designed to combat tired and puffy skin in desperate need of a pick me up, the gel-to-ice moisturiser hydrates and cools. Q&A Local experts offer advice on how to look your big-day best HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR

www.instagram.com/kcphotographyonline

What are the latest hair and make-up trends?

TRIED AND TESTED Is it worth having a make-up trial and what should I expect? A make-up trial is a great opportunity to get to know your supplier. To deliver the best results, your MUA has to understand your likes, dislikes and be able to discuss your ideas. Your bridal make-up is a key part of your day, so it’s crucial you don’t skip this part of the process. At the trial, I personally go through your eye colour, skin colour, texture and facial features, as well as your dress, flowers and overall theme of the wedding. The make-up has to enhance your personality and not take over the rest. It’s very important to work together to make you look and feel your very best and exude confidence. The trial also allows you to test products to ensure you have no skin reactions or sensitivities to them. Trials are the perfect time to make changes as you may have an idea in your head or a magazine image but then not like it on your skin. Wear a light coloured top and take along your wedding accessories too. Allow an hour and a half or two hours for the trial. Keseme Goodwin Make-up artist www.keseme.co.uk 92

Two hair trends are popular at the moment: Hollywood waves and half up dos. The Hollywood wave is the perfect style for those who want gorgeous volume and sophistication. This look is now being incorporated into other designs, such as ponytails. The half up do is a classic and timeless style that gives you the best of both worlds, as you can wear your hair down and keep it away from your face. It’s also incredibly versatile, as you can change so many elements to give the look a personal twist. It can be dressed up with intricate braids or worn in a more relaxed style with soft curls. It’s been in demand with bridal parties because it’s easy to adapt to different hair types. With make-up, we’ve seen a huge shift recently. The biggest trend at the moment is the ‘clean look’. Think glowy skin, rosy cheeks and a pop of colour on the lips. We’re moving away from heavily-contoured cheekbones to a fresh-faced, glowy finish. It’s a great option for those who want to wear make-up but want to look like they have a natural and radiant glow. Samina Mahmood Hair and make-up artist www.glambysam.co.uk

TRIED & TESTED NATURA SIBERICA ANTI-OX WILD BLUEBERRY RENEWING FACE SERUM £6.99 (30ml), https://naturasiberica.co.uk “This lightweight product ticks all the boxes; it smooths, hydrates and restores the skin’s natural radiance. It didn’t take me long to fall in love with it and I was surprised by how quickly the formula absorbed leaving behind it a natural glow.” – Olivia Gibson

Q+A VITAMIN C BRIGHTENING SERUM £9 (30ml), www.qandaskin.com “This product absorbed quickly and left my skin soft and silky in minutes. In just two days use, morning and night, my blemish-filled complexion had begun to clear and a soft glow had taken hold. Just one pump is enough to cover the entire face, so despite the bottle’s small size, it’s definitely going to last.” – Beth Morton

SKINCARE SUPERHEROES Serums are the skincare essentials of the 20s, especially if you’re on the quest for a radiant big-day complexion WISHFUL THIRST TRAP JUICE SERUM £41 (30ml), www.feelunique.com “The first thing to make me smile about this serum was its fresh scent, I could pick out the rose and aloe vera notes instantly. The second was the ease of application as it glided on smoothly. This mix of hyaluronic acid with firming peptides has benefited my skin, which is glowing and more hydrated.” – Claire Ridley

GLOW RECIPE GUAVA VITAMIN C DARK SPOT SERUM £41 (30ml), www.cultbeauty.co.uk “This super serum had me hooked from the moment I picked up its 100 per cent recyclable packaging and shelfworthy pink bottle. It doesn’t claim to be a miracle worker but my mature skin soaked it up without leaving a trace and although I can’t report that my dark spots have disappeared, it has certainly made a difference. My skin already appears more even with a healthier glow so I’ll definitely be sticking with it!”– Sarah Reeve ROC MULTI CORREXION HYDRATE + PLUMP SERUM CAPSULES £35.99 for 30, www.feelunique.com “Using one serum capsule every night for a week so far has made my skin feel soft and smooth. It’s helped solve my dry-skin problem and given me a glowing complexion. Each capsule provided more than enough product to cover my face and I even had enough excess to use on my hands, which also suffer.” – Melissa Barker

OLE HENRIKSEN DEWTOPIA 20% ACID NIGHT TREATMENT £49 (30ml), www.boots.com “I’m thrilled with this night serum. Each morning I wake up and feel a difference to my skin. Containing a powerful 20 per cent acid blend, it’s certainly helped minimise my pores and gives my skin the radiance it had previously been lacking.” – Rachel Westall

INSTITUT ESTHEDERM INTENSIVE HYALURONIC SERUM £52 (30ml), www.feelunique.com “I’ve been suffering from dry skin lately, so I grabbed this little beauty as soon as I saw it. It sinks into the skin at breakneck speed, with no unpleasant residue whatsoever and leaves it feeling nourished, plumped and smooth. I’ve noticed an improvement in my makeup application already.” – Kelly Andrews 93
