Duration: 3 weeks 20/02/12 Research 27/02/12 Development of ideas 05/03/12 Completion and presentation of final outcome Brief Overview: This project encourages you to extend your textile skills. You will explore texture, colour, and composition to produce a personal embellished bag/wrap reflecting family, friends or personal memories. Using found and personal items such as photos, lucky charms, cards, old jewellery or items which hold special meaning for you and by recycling a variety of materials you will create a patched and pieced surface exploring experimental processes including stitch, image transfer, and mixed media. Objectives: Be able to use textiles materials, techniques and processes Be able to develop work to meet textiles briefs Understand the successful characteristics and quality of textiles work.

Tasks: Week 1: Research - work of others, materials, found items. Draw from books/magazines provided by the library and your lecturer. Collect material from the internet (being selective with the images you print out), collect found items of personal importance and draw/paint from them. Ideas generation - mind mapping, mood boards Initial design ideas: Select a range of found items, colours, motifs, patterns, textures with which to carry out your explorations Collage your items together, stitch, tie, bond, use a variety of methods to link them. Explore a range of different colours to produce a successful colour scheme, and use different media to carry out your explorations Be experimental when adding details. Try stitching into the surface by hand or machine. Add further texture to the surface with beads, buttons, card or paper. (Unit 10: P1, M1, D1; FEsl/E2.1-2.6, FEr/E2.2, 2.3) Week 2: Explore the use of image transfer on fabric, manipulate the surface through pleating/folding/stuffing, use traditional/non-traditional textile materials and techniques. Development of ideas: Further exploration using a range of media and processes such stitch/bonding/tying to link items, embellishing with found items/buttons/labels/beading/wax, adding elements of text. Evaluate your results thoroughly (Unit 10: P2, P3, P4, M2, M3, D2, D3; FEw/E2.1-2.4) Week 3: Final piece - You will need to produce and complete your textile bag/wrap, employing techniques and materials you have explored earlier in the project. Evaluation: effectiveness, time management, does your outcome satisfy the brief, strengths, weaknesses. Be thorough and honest using appropriate technical words. (Unit 10: P4, M3, D3; FEsl/E2.1, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, FEw/E2.1-2.4) Outcome/s: Research Initial designs Sketchbook work Explorations in fabric Final outcome Suggested Reading/ Research: Artists/ Designers: Cas Holmes, Natasha Kerr, Matthew Harris, Janet Bolton, Tilleke Schwarz, Edson Raupp, Lulu Guiness, Furoshiki (Japanese art of fabric folding). You need to source your materials such as photos, tickets, cards, pieces of favourite clothes, appropriate to your design. Studio resources will be available, including sewing machines, paper and Image Maker. Health and Safety: You will need to use your understanding of health and safety to maintain a safe and secure environment and act responsibly yourselves and with others in your team as well as the other groups and lecturers. You should ensure that you follow the health and safety rules within the studio and college setting, creating an environment that is empathetic to those around you. Unit 10 Assessment Criteria: To achieve a Pass for the Unit you will be able to show x evidence of: P1 - use textiles materials, techniques and processes safely [IE; CT; SM] P2 – develop ideas and outcomes to meet textiles briefs [CT; RL; SM] P3 – select appropriate materials, techniques and processes to meet textiles briefs [IE] P4 – discuss successful textiles work.
