You will experiment with manipulation of materials in order to construct you chosen design. The subject matter that you choose must be one that you can research thoroughly and from which you can extract plenty of detail and imagery. For example, you may want to study ancient Egypt and incorporate hieroglyphics and clothing patterns, or you may be excited by the punk movement of the 1970‟s.I have listed below some suggestions to get you inspired! Is there a different culture you are inspired by, other than these? Baroque Punk Egyptian Op Art Aztec Art Nouveau Art Deco

Week 1: Step 1: “If the Hat Fits” Quiz – research and draw the shapes of each different type of hat on the sheet (Unit 9: P3, M3, D3; Unit 10: P1, M1, D1; FEr/E3.1, 3.2, 3.3) Step 2: Research your chosen theme (Unit 9: P3, M3, D3; Unit 10: P1, M1, D1; FEr/E3.1 – 3.4, FEw/E3.1- 3.4) Step 3: Produce 2 x A1 work sheets 1st sheet: Imagery showing your research of your chosen theme. Incorporate drawings of your images using various mixed media. (Unit 9: P3, M3, D3; Unit 10: P1, M1, D1) 2nd sheet: Research relating to hats, designers, and milliners. (HOMEWORK) (Unit 9: P3, M3, D3; Unit 10:P1, M1, D1, P2, M2, D2, P3, M3, D3; FEw/E3.1- 3.4) Weeks 2 & 3: Working within 10cm x 10cm format, I would like you to experiment generating different textured surfaces inspired by your chosen theme. You must consider using different materials, techniques and processes to create unique surfaces. Evaluate your experiments in your journals. (Unit 9: P2, P3, P4, M2, M3, D2; Unit 10: P2, M2, D2; FEw/E3.1 - 3.4) Weeks 4 & 5: Step1: Within your sketchbook, looking and referring back to your initial worksheets and surfaces, I would like you to design 5 possible, final, hat designs. Illustrate, model in paper and evaluate your ideas and plans, giving clear ideas of the composition, structure and surface. (Unit 9: P1- 5, M1-3, D1-3; Unit 10: P2, M2, D2, P3, M3, D3; FEw/E3.1 – 3.4) Step 2: Choose your final design and state why you have chosen this design above all the other ideas. Make your hat for presentation at the end of week 5, with photographs of the final outcome mounted onto A1. (Unit 9: P2 - P4, M2, M3, D2; Unit 10: P3, M2, D2; FEsl/E3.2 - 3.5) Consider textures, colour, collage, layering, sewing, drawing, bonding, paint textures, graphic images, text, prints, and repeat patterns. Please be open minded and experimental about what your hat will look like. Extension activities: Take further photographs showing your hat being modelled, scan and manipulate your hat images in the Macs then mount onto A1 Here are some things you may wish to consider through your design journey: Be aware of the materials you are using and their properties. Think of different techniques in order to manipulate them and to make them work together harmoniously. Can their structure be altered? How are you going to tackle structure in an innovative and original way? Think of different processes to manipulate materials. Can you bind, pleat, gather, fold, cut, tear and shred, knit or weave it? Does it need to be strengthened? What will you use to „keep it together‟? Will you use glue, masking or sellotape, pins, needle and thread, sewing machine or some other innovative way? How will it be decorated? Think of the surface pattern, colour and texture. It is important that you evaluate each step in your journals. (Unit 9: P5, M4, D3; Unit10: P4, M3, D3; FEw/E3.1 - 3.4) National Diploma in Art & Design
