Unit Objectives By the end of this unit you will be able to: list influences of historical and contemporary art & design developments. (P1). Use Contextual research to support the development of own response.(P2). Present relevant information about the work studied (P3). These are the Pass objectives. Please see the Merit and Distinction criteria also to aim for the higher grades.
Brief Overview: For this brief you will need to research the Young British Artists (YBA’s) and their link with Charles Saatchi. You will need to research the ‘Sensation’ Exhibition which took place at the Royal Academy in London and tell me when it happened. It is important to research the artists because most are current and in a way they are your contemporaries which are moulding the creative world that you are training to be a part of. As well as researching the artists themselves I would like you to find out and tell me what and who influenced them to create the work which they make. For example: Picasso was influenced by Paul Cezanne and Picasso influenced the Futurists with his Cubist works. The work will need to be presented coherently on A1 worksheets supported by appropriate written notes. Once you have researched 3 of the artists as much as you can you will then create your own response to their work drawing on their style, process and inspiration to create your own work. The more you can expand on what you have been asked the stronger the project will be. This will be the last project for this unit so look to the Merit / Distinction Criteria to aim for the best grade possible.
Tasks.
Week 1: Introduction to the Movement in Class. Use the Library/Laptops to research the Young British Artists and their association with the Charles Saatchi. What was the ‘Sensation’ Exhibition? Who have they been influenced by? Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design
Create A1 worksheets of research. Colour images, artist information – where did they study, what are they famous for? Examples of their work with titles and dates. What materials do they work with? In your journals evaluate the work of the artists and tell me what you think of their work please. Be critical if you want in a constructive way. Evaluate the session. Week 2: Decide on one artist to concentrate on which has inspired you the most. Research them further to find out more about them and their influences. Gather information on who inspired them also. Begin planning in your sketchbooks in response to their work for something that will be made by you. For example – if you looked at Marcus Harvey’s portrait of ‘Myra’ you could choose to produce a portrait of yourself in a similar way. Produce a response to your chosen artist. Evaluate the session. (P2, M2, D2) (FEsl/E3.1 Follow the main points of discussions.FEsl/E3.2 Use techniques to clarify and confirm understanding.FEsl/E3.3 Give own point of view and respond appropriately to others’ point of view.FEsl/E3.4 Use appropriate language in formal discussions/exchanges.FEsl/E3.5 Make relevant contributions, allowing for and responding to others’ input)
