Duration: 5 weeks Week 1: 2nd November Week 2: 9th November Week 3: 16th November Week 4: 23rd November Week 5: 30th November Aims: Explore the subject of autumn through primary and secondary observations using a variety of media, techniques and processes including printmaking, and then produce a final, mixed media series of prints. Objectives: Be able to use 2D mark-making techniques Be able to communicate design ideas using 2D visual communication techniques Be able to use formal elements in 2D visual communication. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 1: Step 1: You have been asked to bring with you for this session a selection of autumn forest windfall to work from. In your group, arrange them to form a colour wheel. Photograph it. Then in your sketch book draw a series of boxes and mix the exact colour in acrylic paint replicating the colours on your colourwheel. (P1, M2, D1) In another series of boxes, try different media to create the colours. (D1)

Step 2: In your group and still working together, arrange a still life of forest fall in front of you. Photograph your still life using your phone camera or a college camera. Try different arrangements thinking of your composition discuss different arrangements before you are all happy. Print these images off for next session, they must be no smaller than A5 (that’s half an A4 sheet of paper). (P1, M2, D1) Step 3: Following directions begin to draw your autumn scape within your sketchbook. You will be producing a series of timed drawings experimenting with different media and techniques. Step 4: Remembering what mark making techniques we have explored so far use a variety of media to produce an A2 observational drawing of your chosen composition. Explore the formal elements of form, texture, line, colour, scale and tone through the combination of materials and mark – making techniques. (P1, P2, M1, M2, D1, D2) Step 5: Write a short evaluation about what you have done in your journal.(P3, M3, D3) What have you done? What techniques have you used? What is successful? What are you thinking of doing next? Homework Research artists given below on the internet and in books and bring your found images to your next session, please make a note of the work and the artist who created it. Through researching you may come across other artists work that you like – gather this visual information too! Research images too and bring them to your next session (P2, M2, D2) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 2 & 3 Preparation: You must bring with you for this session: Artist research Images found from the internet Leaves Step 1: Using the reverse of the leaves you have gathered take prints from them on various papers and surfaces. It’s important that you refer back to the colour mixing you have used so far. Mount these experiments. Once confident of the texture and shapes you are creating create an A1 worksheet. Step 2: Using the images you have produced and the photographs you have taken, select an area within your work using a view finder and produce a lino cut measuring 8cm squared. You must ensure you are following the health and safety rules while cutting lino. Once cut Print and try: Printing single colour, different layers of colours, tissue and collage back grounds, water to dilute the ink etc (P1, P2, M1, M2,) printing a repeat pattern Step 4: Cut out a further layer within your lino and reprint over your first print. (P1, P2, M1, M2,) To extend this process, cut out further layers within your lino and reprint over your first prints. (D1, D2) Step 5: Write a short evaluation consider: What have you done? What techniques have you used? What artists work that you have researched did you like? What is successful? Do you like what you have done? What are you thinking of doing next? (P3, M3, D3) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 4: Preparation: You must bring with you for this session: Your prints Step 1: Using non-traditional 2D processes begin working into some of your

prints (P1, P2, M1, M2, D1, D2) using stitch using the sewing machines and by hand transfer your image onto fabric consider bringing in text cut and re collage together Step 2: Write a short evaluation about what you have done in your journal.(P3, M3, D3) What have you done? What techniques have you used? What is successful? What are you thinking of doing next? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 5: Preparation: You must bring with you for this session: Your completed work Step 1: Once all your printing is completed, scan the prints onto the Macs and try manipulating your images to produce a series of images. These will be your final outcomes. (P1, P2, M1, M2, D1, D2) Step 3: Mount your finished prints and final outcomes (P2, M2, D2) Step 4: Write a short final evaluation about what you have done.(P3, M3, D3) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 6: This is your catch up session!! Please ensure you have the following outcomes for assessment‌ Outcomes: Sketch book studies and colour wheel reference A2 painting mounted on A1 paper 2xA1 sheets mounted leaf prints A1 sheet mounted 1 colour prints A1 sheet mounted 2-3 colour prints A1 sheet of manipulated prints A1 sheet mounted final images (produced from the Macs) 3 artists you have researched independently. Suggested Reading/ Research:

Artists/ Designers: Orla Kiely, Ivon Hitchin, William Turner, Paul Nash Please research 3 other Artists Books: Look at General art books in the library and begin finding artists that you like and keep a note in your sketchbook / journal. You could even start to build a bank of artists and images that interest you in your file. Vitamin D – New Perspectives in Drawing. This is in the Library! Lots of yummy, scrummy art to get your creative juices flowing. Resource Requirements: Full Art box. You need as a group to source your materials appropriate to your design. Studio resources will be available. Health and Safety: You will need to use your understanding of health and safety to maintain a safe and secure environment and act responsibly yourselves and with others in your team as well as the other groups and lecturers. You should ensure that you follow the health and safety rules within the studio and college setting, creating an environment that is empathetic to those around you.
