Brief Overview: Cubism is a key Art movement within the 20th Century (1906-1912). Its main artists are Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and lesser known is Juan Gris. To begin with you will research into the movement using the library (books and internet). Once you have gathered information / images on the movement and created an A2 worksheet for 2 Cubist Artists you will then be able to apply what you have discovered in 2 sessions where you will put the ideas of Cubism into practice. What is Analytical Cubism? What is Synthetic Cubism? Who or what inspired the movement?
Tasks.
Week 1: Introduction to the Movement in Class. Use the Library to research Cubism and the artists associated with the movement. Please find 3 images per artist with dates and titles. Please write notes in your journal about the movement. Define what the key characteristics of Cubism are. Produce an A2 research sheet on each artist. Layout and Stick down your images. Copy elements of their work to fill the page using various materials. Keep it visual. (P1, P3, M1, M3, D1, D3) (FEsl/E3.1 Follow the main points of discussions.FEsl/E3.2 Use techniques to clarify and confirm understanding.FEsl/E3.3 Give own point of view and respond appropriately to others’ point of view.FEsl/E3.4 Use appropriate language in formal discussions/exchanges.FEsl/E3.5 Make relevant contributions, allowing for and responding to others’ input FEr/E3.1 Understand the main points of texts.FEr/E3.2 Obtain specific information through detailed reading)
Week 2: Produce preliminary sketches in sketchbook. This will get you familiar with the shapes, forms and tones in small scale. Produce an A1 charcoal & chalk drawing to show form and tone using the ideas of Analytical Cubism from a still life. Take another A1 sheet. Cover this next A1 sheet completely in charcoal. Using a rubber remove charcoal to show the highlights. Continue working into the charcoal with the rubber to build the forms then work back in with charcoal for the dark tones.

To add more to this second drawing add one colour from analytical cubism to selected areas. Write about what you did this session in journal. (P2, M2, D2) (FEsl/E3.1 Follow the main points of discussions.FEsl/E3.2 Use techniques to clarify and confirm understanding.FEsl/E3.3 Give own point of view and respond appropriately to others’ point of view.FEsl/E3.4 Use appropriate language in formal discussions/exchanges.FEsl/E3.5 Make relevant contributions, allowing for and responding to others’ input)
Week 3: In your sketchbook you will produce a series of small synthetic collages by observing the still life. One will be made from white paper cut outs, the next from newspaper and a third from brown paper. Your final collage in sketchbook will combine white, brown and newspaper. Taking your mixed paper collage you will then be able to scale this up onto A1 using a combination of those materials. Write about what you did this session in journal. How was it different to Analytical Cubism? (P2, M2, D2) (FEsl/E3.1 Follow the main points of discussions.FEsl/E3.2 Use techniques to clarify and confirm understanding.FEsl/E3.3 Give own point of view and respond appropriately to others’ point of view.FEsl/E3.4 Use appropriate language in formal discussions/exchanges.FEsl/E3.5 Make relevant contributions, allowing for and responding to others’ input)
Outcome/s: An A2 research sheet for 2 artists. Preliminary sketches in sketchbooks. An A1 charcoal and chalk drawing inspired by analytical cubism. An A1 charcoal subtraction image with one colour added. 4 synthetic collages in sketchbook. An A1 synthetic collage/mixed media piece scaled up from sketchbook. Notes in journal on Cubism, the artists and about what you did.
