Publisher’s Letter

Salty Summer or Summer Salty? It’s been both this season, and we can’t really split them so let’s work with both.

Beaches COVERED. Summer 2022 / 2023 Salty Summer

Figuratively speaking. It means ‘experienced’, especially used to indicate a veteran of the sea/beach lifestyle or old salty sea dog!

Summer is the dream season for most people. Think long hot 30+ degree beach days, fish and chips, daylight savings, huge crowds — everywhere, those glaring G-string style cossies, sluggos, boardies, surfers, clubbies, flies, bushfires, festive hangovers... the list goes on. I mean, we really all go quite nuts!

But that’s just Summer. Love it!

What’s not to love? Zinc cream and sunscreen and music festivals rock. Surf carnivals are cool. Sunburn, a badge of stupidity or just an Aussie icon? Backyard BBQs. It’s warm and humid, and lazy days are what we dream of.

Let’s get into our BIGGEST MAG YET! All 132 Pages.

First up. A big shout-out to James Griffin. As Publisher, I try to be impartial; however in this case before the next election in March, Mr Environment and Heritage Minister is not only a top bloke who is so approachable (as all Pollies should be), he has kept Manly on the map through a long tough patch and achieved so much for the area in five years. Let’s get behind him in 2023 to keep the good times rolling down the south end of the Beaches.

The Manly Skiff Club is celebrating 100 years in February. Pop in and

have a schooner or two to celebrate with them.

Have a peek at ‘Unique Monique’. She’s our fabulous cover artist. Her work is block art brilliance. Book an appointment to see her wonderful collection in Brookvale Studio.

Another gallery of fabulous work resides up in Seaforth. Go check out Harvey Galleries this Summer. You’ll love it.

We didn’t need to go far to find our very own ‘Salty Surfer’. The life and times of Luke ‘Howie’ Howarth, master shaper from Howie Shapes. If you want a new whip, this man will custom shape you a board, just like the old days.

Beachfox has the sunscreen you must have this Summer. Take off and tour around the Beaches on your e-bike. Or, if you fancy a primo holiday, escape and go luxury superyachting around Sydney Harbour, Whitsundays or beyond the ditch to Fiji.

It’s cocktails a plenty at the Harbord Diggers. Try their Pavlova Sour or freeze yourself slim with CRYO° Stay Young’s slimming therapy.

Studio 8 is opening a new sister-salon in Mosman. By Brigitte has some mesmerising pyjamas and beach sarongs. And, Cordony Hair has the latest Summer hair savers for those salty days.

We meet young entrepreneur Alana Maria, a 25 year old gal on a mission to bring jewellery glamour to the world.

Hamptons by Rose is coming to Dee Why. Take a look at what’s on offer from eating out to business services, as well as their beautifully designed residential apartments.

Zephyr Home’s coastal furniture and homewares will give you a sense of calm if you’re after a coastal chic look. Dress your windows with Piega or get your kitchen custom designed for 2023 with multi-award winning Houzz ‘Best Customer Service’ business Collaroy Kitchen Centre.

If you’re after a spot of gardening, chat with Marina from Harvest Seeds & Native Plants. She will have you planting a low maintenance garden that the birds and bees will love.

Property and interest rates have been a hot topic lately. Chat to the best in the business —Upstate, Astute Manly, WMW Laywers, Fiona Landreth Buyer’s Agent and Southern Highlands Buyer’s Agent, Adam Marsden from Earth Property.

We’ve found a great plumber, Dave Purtell from Pearla Plumber. He can fix everything from taps to toilets and more.

And finally, our feature spread. We visit one of our favourite villages of the Beaches—Avalon. We’ve got 12 pages of community awesomeness!

So tuck in, dig your toes in the sand over the holidays and rip in.

Happy New Year. We’ll see you in 2023!

Sam Kerr: Kicking Goals Journal

During Covid lockdown, local Mum, Louise Blair, started writing an interactive book about soccer. Little did she know she would soon be publishing, The Kicking Goals Journal with Matilda’s Captain, Sam Kerr.

“I started writing at home and didn’t think much would come of it,” says the Curl Curl local. “I made contact with Simon & Schuster, the Publishers, and they loved the idea. They sent it to Sam Kerr, and she loved it too. There was a space in the Kicking Goals series so they added it to the box set for Christmas.”

The Kicking Goals Journal is an illustrated soccer journal aimed at young players from 5 to 12 years old.

“It’s full of activities and games,”says Lou. “I’ve been a player and coach my whole life, and my kids Malia and Jack love the game too - they really inspired me. I wrote the book for them that I wanted as a kid. They copy edited it and helped make it more child-proof.”

The book contains a monthly calendar to track training and games, plus soccer know-how, tips, stats, goal setting tools and words of wisdom from Sam Kerr.

Scan the QR code to purchase. Also available at Big W and Dymocks, Warringah Mall.

MUSIC

Holly Alison

Central Coast artist, Holly Alison, makes a welcome return with a supercharged new single, ‘DOING BETTER’. The track, which oozes pop-trap vibes, was written after she endured a toxic relationship. It’s her most confident release to date.

“The song was written about a psycho ex-girlfriend who used to tell me I would never get any better than her.

“When I finally got out of the relationship, it was my mission to throw a Taylor Swift and write a break-up song that had positive swing,” says Holly.

‘DOING BETTER’ is an intoxicating blend of club beats and polished pop hooks. Holly teamed up with her friend, Australia’s newest R&B superstar producer, songwriter and singer, Boy Soda, on her release.

“I started with the thought process of creating a song which allowed me to speak my mind out loud. It is something I didn’t really have the balls to do in my previous relationship so I thought, why not write a song instead. I asked Brae (Boy Soda) if he was keen to help me write it,” explains Holly.

Completing the entire demo in Boy Soda’s home studio, Holly sent the track to renowned producer, Liam Quinn.

“He was super keen to jump on it. Initially the song didn’t have a bridge; however during the session, we realised it would sound better with a rapper in it. Liam suggested Ramzie, who immediately sent through an initial draft. I loved it, so we put his rap in. The rest is music history.”

Holly has been consistently ticking off personal milestones including 650,000 streams on Spotify, 40,000 streams on YouTube and Triple J airplay. •

A lifelong mentorship with Ulladulla and Yuin elder, Uncle Noel Butler and Hein Cooper have returned with their new collaborative single, ‘The Weatherman’. It’s an emotive and captivating track questioning a societal disconnect from nature, alongside a lack of understanding for those who hold the wisdom of thousands of years prior.

Hein felt compelled to introduce the track to Uncle Noel Butler, who had mentored him and his brother during their adolescence. Hein and Uncle Noel collaborated on the song, which Uncle Noel invited the four winds (the elements) to rise in his indigenous Dhurga language before he recorded the didgeridoo for the beginning of the song. The collaboration created a thematic understanding that it was now ‘Us’ –a combination of all its contributors and not just one belonging to Hein.

The Ulladulla and South Coast communities joined local songwriter Hein to write songs as catharsis. The project culminated in the group offering their voices to broaden local songwriter Noel Butler’s ‘Us’ even further.

The final track was also influenced by the natural sounds of Badawang Hills, a national park that houses both Yuin flora and fauna. This soundscape contributed to mixing and mastering at a local recording studio in Ulladulla with Jackson Barclay (Vera Blue, Winderbourne) and George Georgiadis (The Vanns).

“Who is the Weatherman?” asks Hein. “Is he a guy paid by large companies to read off a script? Or does he feel nature, the wind and water, animals and plants? I believe nature has all of the answers to our current issues. This song is a mantra to tap into those secrets especially through Indigenous knowledge carried by elders still willing to share.”

Hein is a remarkable, unpresuming talent with this single continuing to highlight another track to his arsenal of songs. •

Sydney

The song focuses on relationships, specifically the breakdown of a relationship. The single explores the complexity of intimate connection and the nuance that comes with navigating your way through such an emotional environment.

Recorded by Gradon and his band in the Blue Mountains, the single in its final form comes wrapped up in the dynamism of a group of musicians who are very much in sync with their artistry elevating the key sounds that sit at the core of Gradon’s songwriting style.

“I think we ended up using the first take of the session. I’ll never forget our engineer, Liam Judson, swearing loudly seconds after we finished, declaring we had it,” says Charlie.

With early music evoking references to some of indie music’s greats including Mac DeMarco and Radiohead, Charlie emerged in 2018 as an intriguing new player on the Australian scene. British born and now based in Sydney, Charlie’s confessional style of songwriting has had International qualities from the jump. His perspectives have been both inviting and accessible for listeners, making his overall catalogue one that media and radio alike have flocked to in recent years.

Gradon’s songwriting pen is also strong when it comes to collaborations with other artists. His co-writing credits include Julia Stone, Pacific Avenue, The Rions, DZ Deathrays and others. •

MEADOWHIP

‘Meadowhip’ is the solo project of singer-songwriter-poet, Cara Walkam. Pursuing creativity after a major hemorrhagic stroke, the debut EP ‘Ruckus’ navigates a transitional moment of Cara’s life and exploration of self-love and life.

“After several months of intense recovery, I started finding clarity. I took stock of my life and, amongst other things, I realised that I couldn’t ever be truly happy unless I committed fully to living creatively as a songwriter, performer, recording artist and poet. It’s not an easy commitment. In fact, it’s damn challenging, but I know that the alternative would be intolerable,” says Meadowhip.

“‘Ruckus’ is a snapshot of some of the phases of my process of evaluating my life. I’m documenting my regrets, my hopes, the things I’m grateful for, the people I love, and the questions I was asking myself at the time.”

Her debut EP, the culmination of 2 years work, is an honest reflection. Fusing introspective and irreverent lyrics with woozy alt-R&B, pop and soul, you will find a new favourite in this Wollongong-based artist.

The 6-track EP is an expansive collection that centres on gossamer guitar licks, ambient layered vocal textures and shimmering synths. Her silky smooth vocals, expert lyricism and the killer production offers a deeply personal ode to transformation, wrapped in warmth, beauty and gentle magic.

“When I wrote these songs, I was writing music and poetry pretty much every day, and pushing myself to work with different themes and genres, really trying to challenge myself to come up with distinct and self-contained pieces. I had a feeling that these six songs belonged together.”

Beyond this, her music has received praise from Women in Pop (Australia), CLOUT Magazine (UK), IGGY Magazine (France) and on radio throughout Australia.

&Opportunity inclusion

Northern Beaches local, Laura O’Reilly, recalls the devastation her family faced when her younger brother graduated from high school, and he was unable to find a place in the world. As a young man with profound cerebral palsy, he was on the cusp of adulthood and looking at a future of closed doors.

Laura knew Shane’s disability was the least of him. His abilities and his potential were who he was. Moved by the unfairness of her brother being denied opportunities, Laura was determined to change things - not only for Shane but for thousands of other Australians excluded and defined by their disability.

Laura and her other brother, Jordan, saw the power of social enterprise to address these gaps in opportunity and create a truly inclusive economy. In 2011, they founded ‘Fighting Chance’ and began to support ten people with disability to gain work experience in Brookvale on the Northern Beaches.

“Society should be supporting every person to be their maximum selves. Instead of waiting for that to happen, we decided to do something about it,” says Laura.

Eleven years on, there are five social enterprises in the Fighting Chance group which create opportunities in employment, microbusiness, community participation and supported independent living. They serve over a thousand people with disability across thirteen locations in four states.

Base has partnered with Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) provider, Casa Capace, to build three new, state-of-the-art homes for people with disability in Beacon Hill on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. All base homes are designed to put people living with disability at the centre of decision-making, providing them with the foundations and support they need to make their own future.

Despite its rapid expansion, Laura and Fighting Chance still call the Beaches home. All five of Fighting Chance’s enterprises are embedded in the welcoming, inclusive community on the Beaches, supporting 463 people and employing 376 (including over 40 with disability).

Fighting Chance’s newest enterprise is Plus, which the team is building to be Australia’s leading integrated program for people with complex behaviours. It will integrate a world-class life skills day program with therapeutic, allied health and clinical supports.

Base Housing Collective is also a new player, reimagining the approach to supported independent living. One of the gaps in everyday opportunity for people with disability is being able to choose where to live and with whom. This is exacerbated by very limited disability housing options on the Northern Beaches. Base is ensuring people with disability can live independently whilst remaining close to their families and support networks here. In partnership with Specialist Disability Accommodation provider Casa Capace, Base is building three new state-of-the-art homes in Beacon Hill, due to open in 2023.

Eleven years ago, Laura and Jordan set their sights high, envisioning the new future for disability they could build through Fighting Chance. In 2021, Laura received an OAM for her service to the disability sector. Her pride in receiving the award, and her drive to continue her work, are tied to her brother Shane’s legacy.

“Shane died when he was 21 years old. It was six months; after that we started Fighting Chance. Shane had picked out his desk, ready to join us, but he never truly got to see the life he inspired, a life that has helped so many to be included in society. He would be smiling down on us.” •

Plus aims to integrate a world-class life skills day program with therapeutic, allied health and clinical supports, so participants can improve their daily living skills, increase their independence and nd well-being through a sense of purpose and belonging.

Sailing into 100 years of fun

When the Manly 16ft Skiff Club was granted its first liquor licence in the1960s, you had to know someone who knew someone before you could even think about setting foot in the premises.

And that person better have their member’s key with them because long before swipe cards, that was the only way to actually gain access.

They only drank one beer; Miller’s because the brewery of the same name owned the licence – and as for food, well, you better pack a few sandwiches because there was no menu.

“To receive the licence, the layout of the club had to be altered to provide a library, games room, ladies’ toilets and separate dining room. We had to recruit a large number of associate

members (100-odd) to build numbers to the required level,” former Treasurer Dick Hanlon recalled.

“This necessitated nominating and seconding and paying for our mothers, fathers, wives and girlfriends.

“After a lot of hard work and many anxious moments, we were finally licensed.

“Looking back with hindsight, it was the correct course of action to take and we have all prospered – in sailing and social terms – as a result.”

The licence was indeed a game changer for a club that up until that stage had been the base for local sailing since staging its first race on February 25, 1923.

Five years on from that initial race, the Manly Sailing Club (later morphing into the Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club) opened its official headquarters, a basic wooden structure designed and built by members from money raised by social functions and five-pound debentures.

Those early pioneers would be staggered to see the progress the club has made since those formative years.

As it prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2023, the “Skiffies” is now recognised as one of Sydney’s must-visit venues and a true Northern Beaches treasure.

You no longer need to whisper in the right ear to get in, with more than 8,000 members enjoying first-class food and drinks while looking out on unbeatable waterfront views.

Life member, Peter St John, is one of the club’s genuine characters, his association stretching back more than half a century through sailing and the licensed club.

You’ll find “Saint” and his table of regulars at the club a few afternoons a week; his schooner encased in his personal leather stubby holder.

“I can remember everyone who came here got a shocking headache from the beer because Miller’s was the only thing to drink,” he recalled with a laugh.

“The old joint looked like a shoebox compared to this. It was pretty basic and it was just sailing people who came here.

“Look at it now – you can hardly move in here some days.”

Northern Beaches, Mayor Michael Regan, is one of the many tens of thousands to visit the club each year.

He told Beaches COVERED., “One hundred years is a remarkable achievement. The club is an amazing part of our local heritage and continues to be as relevant today as it was no doubt 100 years ago.

“I am a semi-regular there and love the location as much as anyone else. Congratulations to those that continue to run the club and good luck for the next 100 years.”

Club President, Rolf Cohen, added, “We are very proud to be celebrating 100 years of sailing in the Manly area.

“We have grown with the community over that century and would like to think we have made a major contribution, both on and off the water.

“Our predecessors showed great foresight in securing the premises we’re now on all those years ago, and we are very mindful of honouring and adding to their legacy.

“We hope to see as many people down here as possible to help celebrate what will be a massive centenary year in 2023.”

The highlight of centenary celebrations will be the hosting of the Australian 16ft Skiff Championships from January 7-14.

The best 16ft skiff sailors in the country will converge in Manly for the weeklong regatta, with Manly skipper Nathan Wilmot looking to make back-to-back national titles aboard Typhoon.

BMW’S NEW XFACTOR

The German luxury car maker has made its new X1 smarter, more innovative and above all, better looking; not that the old model was lacking in the looks department. With the sort of technical and performance credentials the X1 brings to the table along with some very attractive pricing, the new X1 is going to be hard to resist.

Of course now the X1 is available with a fully electric driveline in a variant called the iX1, which now takes the mantle of being the flagship of the X1 line up.

The iX1 sits alongside petrol versions, including the X1 sDrive18i and X1 xDrive20i, all of which offer fabulous performance, features and ergonomics that one has come to expect from BMW.

The X1 draws heavily on design cues from previous models, with the legendary

‘kidney’ shaped BMW grille and distinctive hip design treatment around the waist and flush door handles, leaving no doubt it’s part of the latest generation of BMWs.

While the exterior styling detail is fantastic, under the skin in the various drivelines is where the revolution really begins.

The electric iX1 xDrive30 is equipped with dual electric motors developing 200kW and 494Nm in standard mode or an extra 30kW when you switch to ‘boost’ mode. That is truly serious power for a compact SUV and underlines the serious performance that an electric driveline can deliver.

The iX1 is available with the choice of two AC chargers, with either an 11kW unit that recharges to full in 6.5 hours, or a 22kW model that does

it in 3.75 hours, while the 64.7kWh battery delivers up to 438km range, with regenerative braking putting charge back every time you brake.

The two petrol versions of the X1 include the front-wheel-drive sDrive18i or the all-wheel-drive xDrive20i, and when it comes to efficiency, these are very impressive.

The sDrive18i uses a three-cylinder 1.5-litre turbocharged engine with 115kW of power and 230Nm of torque, matched to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The xDrive20i model has BMW’s 2.0-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder, delivering 150kW and 300Nm, fed to the road through all four wheels via the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, and can sprint to 100km/h in just 5.7-seconds.

WORDS: JON THOMSON / PHOTOGR APHY: COL CRAWFORD BMW BMW HAS COMPLETELY RE-IMAGINED IT’S BABY SUV MODEL, THE X1, AND GIVEN IT THE SORT OF PIZAZZ AND TECHNICAL FEATURES TO TAKE IT BACK TO THE TOP OF A LOT OF NEW CAR SHOPPING LISTS. BEACHES COVERED. AUTOMOTIVE ENTHUSIAST, JON THOMSON, EXPLORES HOW THIS LATEST ITERATION OF BMW’S X-FACTOR SUV STACKS UP.

‘Ultimate Driving Machines’ is BMW’s legendary catchcry, and its suspension refinement is always impressive. In the case of the new X1, it’s no exception.

There is revised suspension geometry, along with adaptive suspension, variable electric steering, and a new and very intelligent stability control system, claimed to be ten times faster than previous systems.

That means that even before you perceive an imminent emergency, the ever vigilant electronic monitoring systems will have identified the issue, and thanks to the speed of the processor, can react and avoid or reduce the impact of a collision. It’s very high-tech and very comforting for any driver.

Dear Residents

What a busy year it has been for Manly. Across the Electorate, projects are being delivered to improve our beautiful community. Key projects include the construction of Australia’s first hospice for young adults on the old Manly Hospital site. This is the first facility of its kind in Australia and will set a national standard for palliative care. I am happy to announce that the NSW government will be providing $2 million in funding each year for perpetuity to deliver the necessary services at the site.

I am also happy to announce that early stage works on the former Manly Sea Life Site are underway. The project will demolish the old aquarium building and create more public open space on the foreshore of Sydney Harbour and provide better access for everyone to and from the water.

North Head as the entrance to Manly and Sydney contains immense natural beauty and history. Visitors to this site will now have a greater experience with the $3.2 million upgrade of North Head National Park nearly complete. The new lookouts provide some of the most stunning views of Sydney, and the expanded grass area is proving a huge winner with more space to enjoy a picnic with family and friends.

This year marked 5 years in Parliament representing the great community of Manly. One of the most challenging issues to come across my desk in the past 5 years has been the issue of Youth Mental Health. Certainly, before and during the pandemic, this issue has been of significant concern for many families. Local mental health organisations, community leaders and constituents have all advocated to me for assistance.

This year the NSW Government responded to this call and announced a $11.4 million Northern Beaches youth mental health package. This will provide four dedicated acute paediatric mental health beds, child and youth psychiatrist services, additional staff for the Local Child Youth Mental Health Services and the Youth Response Team service, and a new youth drug and alcohol service right here in our community.

As Patron of the Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter, I know that domestic and family violence is a serious and devastating crime, and one that does not discriminate by postcode. I committed to secure additional services for the Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter, and I am so proud to see an expansion of services for our area. These new services will provide greater capacity in the Northern Beaches for safe, private, and independent living spaces for victim survivors and their children. The Perrottet Government is delivering the largest investment in domestic and family violence support in NSW history. More than $426 million will build 39 new refuges, which will enable frontline service providers to support up to an additional 2,900 more women and children each year.

As many of you would know this year, I had the great honour and responsibility of serving NSW as the Minister for the Environment and Heritage. In this role, I have been working to continue expanding the NSW National Park estate which has grown by more than 600,000 hectares. This year, we successfully banned problematic single use plastic items this will prevent an

estimated 2.7 billion plastic items from entering out natural environment and water ways.

As NSW Heritage Minister and Member for Manly, it was wonderful to have attended the unveiling of the first Northern Beaches ‘Blue Plaque’, in honour of Duke Kahanamoku at Freshwater Surf Club. The plaque recognises Duke introducing surfing to Australia in 1914. It is one of many diverse stories from around the state to come to light through the Blue Plaques program. The Blue Plaques program is a fantastic celebration of our rich heritage, by recognising noteworthy people, places and events from NSW’s history.

In some further great news for Manly and NSW, the WWF (Worldwide Fund for Nature) released their renewable superpower scorecard. This year, NSW surged to first place gaining 12 points due to its breadth of renewable policies and its First Nations guidelines. With the report stating, “New South Wales has a clear, well-funded plan to develop Renewable Energy Zones and improve its transmission system.” This is exciting news for NSW’s goal of Net Zero by 2050.

Finally, thank you for all the good wishes in celebrating five years as your State Member of Parliament for Manly. It is a great honour and privilege. I am incredibly excited about the future projects that will continue to make our community the best one to live, work and raise a family. There’s always more to do, and I’ll keep working hard on your behalf.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and enjoyable break.

Yours sincerely,

The Gift

of Time

Time is a precious commodity. As Anni Sandwell, Head of Junior School at Queenwood School, explains to Beaches COVERED., quality time with daughters is essential for their development into young women.

Research indicates that time spent with children is not necessarily a huge undertaking. It can be as simple as engaging in tasks they like to do and giving them purposeful attention in short, quality bursts.

Spending quality time with your daughters when they’re young is a great way to foster a loving, healthy relationship. Simple moments together will be recalled when the girls grow older; times you showed your love and care for them specifically.

THE BENEFITS OF QUALITY TIME

• Mental, emotional, social, and physical development

• You will feel closer to your daughter. You’ll form a deepening connection, develop empathy, establish a slower pace and enhance well-being.

• Your daughter will be more likely to confide in you when she’s older if quality time is implemented with parents when she’s younger

• Your daughter will feel more confident and increasingly likely to have a go at new things

• Educational benefits – building foundations for school success. Developing speaking and listening, vocabulary, reading and writing, counting, making connections and problem solving, social and self-management skills, relating real life experiences to school learning –new syllabus documents refer to the value of skills established at home

• Family time is happier and there are fewer behavioural issues at home or school

• Children learn how to interact with each other as well as with adults

• Children can become more creative, compassionate, and loving with regular quality time

• Modelling values and promoting curiosity, wonder, agency, and action

• Physical health. Children who spend quality time with their parents are more likely to be physically healthy, with enhanced balance, coordination, and overall growth

• Quality time with pre-teens or teens means they’re less likely to engage in risky behaviour and serious issues such as drug or alcohol use later.

TIPS FOR MAKING TIME

• Eat meals as a family and involve your daughter, when possible, in the preparation of a meal

• Do family chores together. Pack school bags, make lunches, sort the clean laundry, feed a pet, bake, gardening, shop and acknowledge your daughter’s help with tasks

• Watch a movie or show together and discuss this afterwards

• Play board or card games, make puzzles, or enjoy construction toys

• Plan an excursion to the theatre, museum, ballet or zoo. Work collaboratively on the plan and make sure you can get there using public transport.

• Get creative. Write a letter, make a card, paint, draw or do other craft activities.

• Make a point of reading together each night, just three books per evening (more than 1000 books read together in one year!). Talk about your shared reading experience.

• Exercise. Take a walk, go for a bike ride, or even swim or surf.

• Take the opportunity for a quick snack and chat or go for a picnic

• Sing together, laugh and play. Play dress-up, put on a puppet show, or try charades

• Put technology away – say no to phone calls, social media and TV when spending time with your daughter.

Make time with your daughter so that both of you can look forward to spending time together.

Spending quality time with your daughter is more important than the quantity of time. Keep things simple by connecting with your daughter in ways that fit your lifestyle and relationship. Try to spend individual time with each child, if possible. These connections will have a lasting impact and provide the support and reassurance that your daughter needs.

Mackellar Dr. Sophie Scamps MP

WHAT A YEAR 2022 HAS BEEN!

As 2022 draws to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in Mackellar for what has been an amazing year and to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year period.

Called on the Government to do more to support our healthcare system, including address the crisis facing general practice

Taken steps to address the obesity crisis by developing my Private Members Bill to regulate junk food advertising to children

Lobbied the Government to increase access to mental health services on the Northern Beaches and around Australia

It’s been an honour to represent our community as Mackellar’s independent voice in Canberra. As a community, you told me you wanted action on climate change, a strong economy, a healthcare system that worked for all of us and to restore integrity into our politics.

After we made history at the May election, we got straight to work. So, what have we achieved together in 2022?

MACKELLAR’S ACHIEVEMENT S IN 2022: Pushed the Government to increase the ambition of Australia’s 2030 emissions reduction target – which is now enshrined in law alongside our 2050 net zero target

Called for policies to address the energy crisis facing Australia – including more investment in renewable energy and electric vehicle infrastructure, as well as intervention in the gas market to reduce energy prices

Supported policies to reduce cost of living pressures facing Australians by voting for legislation to create cheaper childcare and cheaper medicines

Voted in favour of extending paid parental leave from 18 weeks to 26 weeks and led the call to address Australia’s gender pay and Super gaps

Led calls to kill off the PEP-11 oil and gas drilling permit once and for all while calling on the Government to permanently end offshore oil and gas drilling

Called on the Government to redesign the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax (known as the PRRT) to ensure oil and gas companies pay a fairer share of tax

Advocated for local small businesses during the debate over the Government’s industrial relations reforms

Helped strengthen the Government’s National Anti-Corruption Commission model while also beginning work on my Private Members Bill to end the ‘jobs for mates’ culture in federal politics

Called on the Government to do more to halt deforestation, including ending the carve out for the forestry industry in Australia’s national environmental laws

It’s been a huge year and without youthe people of Mackellar – this could not have been possible. So, THANK YOU for your input and support throughout 2022!

2023 promises to be another big year as we continue to redefine politics in Australia – so remember, if there is ever an issue you’d like to raise with me or my office, or you have any questions about how I’m representing Mackellar in Canberra, you can email me at sophie.scamps.MP@aph.gov.au.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone in Mackellar and on the Northern Beaches. •

With the NSW state election to be held in March 2023, it is becoming an urgent situation for the Coalition at both a state and federal level.

Apart from Tasmania (with only a one seat majority), the coalition, in various forms, only holds on to NSW at a territory, state or federal level.

Under ‘normal’ circumstances, the Australian electorate usually has the reverse party in power at a state and federal level. This was basically the case throughout the Hawke/Keating years, and then the Howard years at a federal level.

I comment on this because if the Chris Minns Labor party wins in March, it will be an extraordinarily bad place for the Liberal/National coalition.

There were, I think, many lessons for the Liberal party in particular to learn coming out of the disastrous federal election in May this year.

Perhaps the biggest was the perception that they had a ‘women problem’.

In my opinion, this is certainly the case. Whether it was the treatment of women in general, especially in and around Federal parliament, or simply that the government of the day didn’t have enough female representation, the Liberal and National parties were viewed as being ignorant to the concerns more (slighty) than half of the population.

It is with this in mind that I must comment on the recent preselection in the ‘safe’ seat of Davidson. Natalie Ward, a NSW upper house member from the Liberal party has leadership ambitions, and as a leader must come from the lower house in state politics.

She decided to put her hat in the ring for preselection in Davidson, currently held by Jonathan O’Dea, who is retiring.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said that, “She is a shining light, she’s a future leader of the Liberal party,” but preselectors chose Matt Cross, a former staffer to Premier Mike Baird, instead.

I make no judgement on Mr. Cross, but if ever there was an invitation for a ‘Teal’ candidate to stand, especially a female ‘Teal’ like the ones that swept Scott Morrison from power, this is it.

Even forgetting Natalie Ward, surely there are a plethora of outstanding women on the Northern Beaches who could be chosen. It just seems silly to me.

Despite this, I think the ‘Teals’ have less appeal to voters at a state level, as I think that NSW is leading the way on the environment. Except for some ‘koala trouble’, a story for another day, and therefore may struggle to put forward a strong argument on this point like they did federally.

But the ‘women problem’ will not go away. The coalition needs to pick good female candidates in winnable seats, or they run the risk of becoming a much reduced force in Australian politics.

In general, I think the NSW state coalition government has done a fairly good job, especially on infrastructure.

And their handling of the pandemic was good. But now they need to lay out their vision for the next 10 years, as does the Labor party, who seem a lot more focused under Chris Minns.

Let’s hope we hear their detailed plans soon after the holiday period. •

TA K E I T W I T H TAKE IT WITH A P I N C H O F S A LT A PINCH OF SALT

Providing healthy food that kids will actually eat is no mean feat. As Head Chef at John Colet School, this is a tightrope that Glen has to walk daily.

The Australian Government recommends children four to eight years old eat no more than 0.75-1.5 g/day of salt. Glen’s job is to find ways to make lunches taste good without using too much salt.

Most Australians are consuming nearly twice as much salt as recommended, mainly from processed and packaged foods, which Glen says is far more of a problem than adding salt at the table or during cooking.

“When you add a pinch during cooking, you get the salt circulating at the start of the process, so you get the full flavour benefit,” he explains.

Glen cooks virtually everything from scratch for the students at the school which helps avoid packaged and

processed lunch snacks. The kids enjoy a sit-down vegetarian lunch each day which helps eliminate any processed meats and meat products, which are foods typically high in sodium.

Salt enhances taste and gives structure to flavour by suppressing bitterness, enhancing sweet and savoury, and boosting aromas. Used tactically in children’s cooking, it is possible to maximise on flavour while limiting sodium intake.

“Used sparingly, it is a real secret weapon; a dash of salt in cake batter improves any birthday cake.

“I add salt to pasta water once it has begun to boil and add some of the pasta water to the sauce. For me, this is an essential step in making any good sauce,” he says.

JOHN COLET SCHOOL

A co-ed, multifaith school in Belrose, with engaged students inspired by enriched learning.

LUNCH IS PROVIDED

Lunch time allows children to sit together, pause, serve each other, establish manners and enjoy the physical benefits of nutritious food eaten in good company. The vegetarian menu ensures that all can serve and eat together in an inclusive environment.

According to Glen, there are a few occasions when salt can actually ruin an ingredient.

“Peas and broad beans cooked in salted water will cause their skin to harden and crack. Only salt mushrooms after they are cooked so they don’t shrivel up and go soggy. The same applies for homemade chips.”

Salt isn’t the only way to enhance taste, and Glen thinks we’ve all become a little too quick to reach for the salt shaker.

“Don’t rely too heavily on salt for flavour. Garlic, herbs, spices, lemon juice and vinegars are impactful tools to flavour food,” says Glen.

AV TECHNOLOGY APPRENTICESHIP

For more than 30 years, the team at Pro AV Solutions have been heavyweights in providing digital Audio Visual technology infrastructures. They are now offering educational opportunities in support of this $250B global industry. We caught up with Managing Director, Anthony Jeffcoat, to find out more about their apprenticeship scheme.

What sets the AV industry apart?

The AV industry is one of the fastest growing industries globally with a lot of opportunities and we want to start getting more people involved and building their passion in the AV industry.

It’s unique as it is part of both the construction and IT industry. Pro AV are responsible for securely and safely integrating a range of technology hardware onto walls and ceilings, so structural knowledge is essential. Our team needs to be able to read construction plans, elevations, reflected ceiling plans, and general layouts.

Why did Pro AV initiate the Institute of AV Technology?

We started the Institute of AV Technology because there is no actual course in the AV/IT construction industry that pulls all these skills and competencies together. We have a goal, and our

goal is that the Institute of AV Technology program becomes an accredited course on its own.

What qualification will a student walk away with and how long will it take for them to complete this?

The apprenticeship program is a four year program that focuses on safety from lifting correctly to power tool use, as well as equipping apprentices with the knowledge of how to use a range of tools, how to read plans, run cables etc.

Students will leave with the Nationally accredited Certificate III in Electronics, ACMA Telecommunications, and globally recognised AVIXA CTS (Certified Technology Specialist). When an apprentice reaches the four

year mark, we mentor and support them through our Leadership Program so they can come out and transition into their chosen path in the industry.

Tell us a bit about the Open House that will take place in 2023?

We are excited to announce our open house at one of the local AV integration businesses. It will be a fun and interactive event, ideal for potential students and their parents to learn more about what we do in the AV industry. We will have experienced keynote speakers alongside a series of our apprentices to share their first hand experience.

30 COVER ARTIST 32 AMANDA TYE 33 TREVOR HARVEY ART MONIQUE TYACKE // ‘AFTER THE RAIN’ // MONIQUETYACKE.COM

Monique Tyacke

30 // SOCIAL COVER ARTIST

Beaches COVERED. have been huge fans of Brookvale based artist, Monique Tyacke, for a long time. We are beyond pumped to feature her on our Summer cover. Her punchy, high-impact work in acrylic flows like multi-coloured lava breathing life to any space.

Your colourful style is unique, unlike anything I have seen before. How did it develop? I’ve always been really into graphic art. My style started to develop many, many years ago when I was playing around with my photos on my Mac. These days, I have my process down to a ne art. I start each artwork on the computer manipulating my own photographs, and I create something that I would want to paint onto the canvas. I then draw the outline onto canvas and use acrylic paint to ll in the colours. I love experimenting with unusual colour combinations and usually work across quite a few paintings at any one time. Over the years, my style has stayed the same, but my colour contrast and the scale of my works have changed quite a bit. I really love painting large scale works; my shapes are more uid and the overall feel is so much grander.

Your Brookvale light drenched studio is full of laughter and sunshine. How important is your creative space? My creativity has been exploding for the last four years because my studio is now outside my home. Before that, I was painting small, struggling with light at different times of the day and nding excuses to potter around the studio. My current space in Brookvale is just right for creative energy. I share it with another painter and our dogs. We open all the doors and windows, turn on music, and let our creativity ow freely throughout the day. We laugh a hell of a lot! It’s such a happy place to paint in - so much so that I never want to leave at the end of each day.

Having my studio away from home has also made me appreciate it more. I set painting hours each day unless there’s a tight deadline looming.

You have painted your way around the globe. What is it about a scene that makes you grab for your brushes? I travel with all my photography equipment, which includes my DSLR, GoPro and AxisGo. I take thousands of photos and videos. Then I review them every night in my hotel room. I choose the ones I like and save them to specic Dropbox folders. Scenes with interesting shapes interest me. I nd inspiration everywhere, from rock walls in The Narrows of Zion National Park to rugged coasts on Hawaiian islands, to colourful buildings along the Cinque Terre. Even a view from a plane window can give me a different perspective on scenery.

I’ve never seen a work space more beautifully ordered and organised than your materials table. How much of your personality is reected in your work?

That’s so funny because I think my studio is the only place I’m organised. My paint table is a bit OCD. I know where every colour is at any time. It really helps to have them all laid out in colour groups and ready to go. I think I paint the same way. My process and paintings are very ordered from start to nish. Unless I change the colours dramatically as I go, I can usually tell what each painting will end up looking like, even before I’ve started painting.

A piece of art can change the mood of a room. What do you hope your paintings will bring to a space?

The current trends in Sydney are quite neutral in people’s homes. Everyone seems to want a space that’s calm and looks like something from a design magazine. I love all those neutrals, but I want to walk into a room and see amazing colourful art on the walls, a fantastic sculpture or unusual piece of furniture. My paintings are big, bold and colourful. They make you feel good. Each painting brings a sense of fun, joy and vitality of a place imagined or once visited.

How can readers get their hands on an original Monique Tyacke painting? You can pop in to view available works in my studio. Just knock on the door between 10-2 M-F or call me to make an appointment any other time. My website has most of my current paintings on it as well. Sneak peaks are often seen on my Instagram and Facebook pages too. Send me a message if something catches your eye.

Tell us about your Summer gallery openings? My studio and gallery space will be open for viewings to the public on both Saturday 28th January and Saturday 4th February, 2023. Pop in between 9am to 4pm to buy original art or ask about commission work.

Thanks Mon. We can’t wait to see where your abundant creativity takes you next! •

PAINT YOUR OWN STORY.

I always knew that I’d live a life of creativity, but leaving the stability of an established career and a regular paycheck to become a full-time artist was a terrifying leap of faith.

When I look back on my career, I realise that I’ve been lucky to find a profession that was a good fit for me. It took many jobs before I landed a position as a Visual Arts and Photography teacher at a reputable Northern Beaches high school. It was the ideal teaching opportunity, and I thought I’d ticked all the boxes in my career. However, 15 years on, something was tugging at my heartstrings.

I worked with the most amazing, inspiring and intelligent young people at Manly Selective Campus. Teaching was an extremely rewarding career, and I was doing what I loved, but after many years working in the same room at the same school, things started to feel inauthentic.

After writing a leadership program and studying solution-focused therapy, I began to apply what I was teaching to my own life. I changed my computer password to reflect my long term goal, joined an art group to broaden my creative community, enrolled in a small business course, applied for artist opportunities and entered art prizes year after year, and just kept on painting. I didn’t know what I would do outside of teaching, but it was a stable career. I had a family to support, and I was terrified to leave but knew deep inside that it was time.

Then out of the blue, I received an invitation from an artist I admired to be

a part of a new art exhibition in Seaforth. There would be 13 artists, and I said ‘Yes’ without even reading the details.

For the next 12 months after teaching all day, I worked until early hours of the morning, finishing my paintings and helping towards the running of this new gallery called “Sydney Road Gallery”.

Suddenly while I was sitting in the same classroom where I had seen hundreds of students come and go, it became crystal clear to me. I couldn’t do this anymore.

I had hit a wall. I quit the job I had studied for at University and worked towards all my life. I was going to do it. I was going to become a full time artist.

People love to tell you what you shouldn’t or can’t do. Being a full-time artist wasn’t ever the dream. It was a forgotten dream that I had deemed impossible. Twenty years ago at University, we were told that “only 2 percent make it.”

I used to preach to my students, “Creativity is letting go of the fear of being wrong.” But, “prove them wrong” became my new motto. It’s still written in large print on my studio wall.

It has been six years, and I’m still painting eight hours a day, five days a week, and I’m not planning on stopping any time soon. •

Amanda Tye’s multi-award winning work depicts the landscape of Sydney in oil on canvas, inspired by nature as a way to escape and retreat from daily life. Her works encourage us to be in the moment with the natural world - especially one poised between the ocean and bush.

Amanda’s next solo exhibition will be held in May 2023 at HAKE House of Art, followed by Sydney Road Gallery in October 2023. Her works are available at A K Bellinger Gallery, Sydney Road Gallery, Manyung Gallery in Melbourne and can be viewed at her studio in Allambie Heights by appointment.

“...painting is about escapism and freedom; coupled with music, it is an obsession, a habit, returning each day to do better, to be better... but without experiences fuelled by the magic of the natural and man-made world, there wouldn’t be anything to give.” Amanda Tye

A Gallery of Talent

In an industry quick to bamboozle with a string of floury adjectives, Trevor Harvey is a breath of fresh air. Founder of Harvey Galleries in Seaforth, QVB and Melbourne, his approach to art is simple: you just have to love it.

After 15 years building a career in Art Publishing in Woolloomooloo, Trevor Harvey and his family, Skii, Spencer and Lloyd, established themselves on the Northern Beaches at the Trevor Victor Harvey Gallery. Now known as Harvey Galleries, it has become an institution dedicated to bringing quality art to the Beaches for 29 years.

Art runs through Trevor’s veins. He has an incredible eye for colour and composition, and is an all-round lovely chap. A passionate curator, producer, collector and scout, he describes himself as, “A lifer who will die an art dealer.”

“Art heals,” says Trevor. “It has the power to cleanse the dust from the soul.”

Trevor cherishes his role in the art industry and describes himself as a matchmaker between artist and owner.

“Buying art is like falling in love; there is no logic,” he says. “Choosing art is a bit like choosing a partner. If you really love it, you’ll hold onto it for a lifetime.”

“When curating, I need to have a personal connection with the art. Do I love it? Would I buy it? Would I want to live with it?”

The gallery team excels in presenting art in its best light. They are experts on framing, mounting, lighting and conservation, and offer their buyers support in every area so the art sings as loudly in their home as it does on the gallery walls.

“We want to help our buyers empower their new painting by helping it look its best in situ,” says Trevor.

GLOBAL COLOURS

Favourite cartoonist and children’s author, Dr. Seuss, brought us laughter and provoked thought with his mind-bending

words and whimsical illustrations, His life’s work is duly celebrated at Harvey Galleries’ QVB dedicated space, and at The Block in Melbourne.

The affiliation came about 22 years ago when Trevor was asked to become the agent for the Southern Hemisphere. He toured the country with Dr. Seuss illustrations, gallery hopping with his retrospective exhibition; 70 years of Dr. Seuss. The show developed a following, and Trevor decided a permanent space was required. The QVB gallery

has remained popular ever since.

Trevor has also introduced Australia to an abundance of International art, in particular, contemporary Chinese art.

“My passion for Chinese contemporary art was inspired by my mentor, the late Ray Hughes. Ray was a brave pioneer who introduced Chinese art to Australia. He was a huge inspiration to me,” reveals Trevor.

Trevor developed connections with Chinese artists through travel and visiting International exhibitions. He left in awe of both the culture and education discipline for young Chinese artists.

“Their university structures are amazing. A printmaking student would spend an entire year learning calligraphy. As a result, the standard is so high,” he explains.

A PLATFORM FOR NEW TALENT

Harvey Galleries is known for showcasing bold and brave works from established local and global artists but also for acting as a springboard for new, emerging

talent. Every February, the gallery dedicates its space to showcase Sydney’s most promising art graduates.

“We want to enable new talent to put together their artist statement. We help them find the best way to communicate their work.

“It is our way of giving back to the art community. First time exhibitors will learn industry facts and truths. They get valuable insights into being an exhibiting commercial artist.”

UPCOMING EXHIBITIONS

Johnny Romeo Harvey Galleries is excited to be showcasing the work of bombastic Pop Artist, Johnny Romeo, in December. The exhibition is called LANDED! which the Australian born artist most certainly has.

Felicia Aroney Felicia is gearing up for her debut exhibition. Her textural works in pastels have been on Trevor’s radar for a while.

“I tend to keep an eye on artists for a few years, waiting for the timing to be just right so that our collectors get to see the very best of each artist.” Trevor Harvey. •

Luke ‘Howie’ Howarth - Howie Shapes

THE saltyLIFE OF A

MASTER SHAPER

Die hard surfer and Founder of Howie Shapes, Luke ‘Howie’ Howarth, is Northern Beaches personified. When he is not in the surf, he can be found in his Mona Vale factory, shaping custom surfboards for the bright young stars of tomorrow.

You’ve been surfing since you were a grommet. When and why did you first pick up a board?

As a child, I grew up with asthma and eczema. The family doctor told my mother to get me into the ocean as it would be good for both my lungs and skin. Swimming lessons at Bilgola Beach Ocean Pool helped build my endurance, and I’ve been swimming in the ocean ever since. We are always at the beach, mornings and weekends. My cousin, Malcolm, made me a surfboard with a concave deck so that I could hold on, and my dad would push me through waves at Kiddie’s Corner at

Palm Beach. A few years later, my sister was also surfing; she even competed with other well-known female surfers like Pam Burridge and Toni Sawyer.

We lived a really healthy lifestyle growing up in Avalon where my parents owned a health food store.

Life in the surf, making a living, and following your passion is a pretty enviable journey. What shaped your life in this direction?

My mother helped run the NSW Women’s Surf Riders Association, along with Pam Burridge’s mother. We often travelled up and down the coast for weekends for women’s surfing competitions. I was also exposed to a variety of surfers who stayed with us— Barton Lynch, Gary Elkerton, Robbie Page, The Willis Brothers, Matt and Sam George, Tom Carroll, Dane Kealoha… the list goes on.

By the age of ten, I was competing in state-wide

competitions. I didn’t like school much and left at sixteen to apprentice with a local builder. Although I didn’t enjoy it either, I did pick up some useful skills with power tools that I’d use later in life.

You come from a family of exceptional surfers. Tell us about your successes. My sister Prudence and I were both competitive surfers. In my teens, I won some regional titles and competed in amateur events in Japan and New Zealand. In 1992, I had the opportunity to travel to Japan and start an affiliation with Japanese culture and a company called CHP Surfboards. I lived there for six months surfing in competitions and shaping. For five years, I had an endless summer travelling between Australia and Japan.

How did you learn to shape surfboards?

When my sister began dating and later married local surfboard shaper, Roger Casey, I developed a strong interest in shaping. I hung around his shop, KC Surfboards, a lot. I was

MAKING WAVES WITH HOWIE SHAPES

like a hungry puppy, wanting to know more and more.

Then under the advice of my mentor, Mathew Haymes, I shaped my first board in his North Avalon shaping bay. I was also lucky enough to learn from other industry greats like Peter Daniels, Chris McElroy, and Kazumi Nakamura.

Northern Beaches born and bred, where are your favourite local spots to surf?

I love surfing off the rocks at the northern end of Avalon Beach. Local surfers call it “The Office.” Then there’s “The Wedge” at Whale Beach—also at the northern end of this beach.

When are you at your happiest?

I love spending time with my two daughters, Jasmin and Seaenna. I also like to relax on my veranda at Lakey Peak on Sumbawa Island, Indonesia.

What does a typical day in the life of a ‘Salty Surfer’ look like?

I usually wake at 5:30 a.m., grab a coffee and check out the surf. If the waves are good, I head out for a session. If not, I go to work and play in the dust. Throughout the day, I check Surfline cameras for swell updates. If the surf has picked up, I head out for a surf to rinse off the day’s dirt. Afterwards, I’d probably chill out and enjoy a beer. •

THE CUSTOM EXPERIENCE

What is the best recipe for a great surfboard?

It’s a combination of having enough volume (foam) to paddle well and a responsive rail shape with the right amount of outline so that you can fl through turns while maintaining drive off your bottom turn, which sets up everything else.

How do you tailor each custom-built surfboard to its rider?

Firstly, you need to know the image each person has in mind for their new board, what they have been riding previously, and their weight and height. It always helps to see them surf and to know where they most regularly surf and in what conditions.

What is your most popular model?

The ‘Biggie Smalls’ model is a favourite amongst team riders and customers for its ability to perform in a range of conditions, making it a go-to shortboard for year-round surfing.

You have a lot of years experience under your belt. How has the process evolved during your time in the industry?

Traditionally, all pre-thought ideas come out through your hands. It’s evolved from hand-shaping and designing all your own templates to machine shaping. It took me around 20 years to get things right by hand. Then computer designing and machine shaping came in. I had to start all over again. Now I own two machines, and love the idea that I can design boards on my computer no matter where I am in the world.

Coolest project you have worked on? I’m always up for a challenge. I guess I’ve always had a good idea of shaping finely tuned, high performance blades. I’ve been working with my daughter with fish, mid lengths, twin fins, single fins and longboards. It has been super cool to watch her progression on boards that we’ve designed and built together.

What board do you ride? It depends on the time of year. I’ll ride any number of different boards depending on the conditions and wave type/quality. I’ve just recently updated my quiver—my current collection of surfboards. In this collection, I have an epoxy 5’11” x 19’1/4” x 2’7/6” swallow-tail (30.58 litres) ‘Lions Mane’ model. For small waves, I tend to use an epoxy 5’9” x 19’3/4” x 2’1/2” swallow-tail (31.26 litres) ‘Spider Pig’ model.

I’m about to start on my Summer quiver, which will include a ‘Half Baked’ Skinny Fish model and a ‘Killer Pigme’ Twin Pin model which is part of our Project Red prototype range. •

INNOVATION FOR THE NEXT GENERATION.

Howie places huge importance on community and surf culture. He proudly represents some of the area’s best surfers including super groms Loci and Balin Cullen, Ollie Heintz and Billy Bain. He aims to keep the core surf-culture alive by encouraging skill, respect and a positive work ethic.

You are overtly passionate about the next generation. How do you hope to influence the community and surf culture?

Yes, I am extremely passionate about keeping surfing culture alive, especially educating the younger generation. It’s less about influence and more preserving ‘core’ surf culture by handing it down to today’s youth.

I run training sessions for groms and help to educate them on the importance of knowing and respecting the culture. I teach my team not only about the ocean but also about the line-up, etiquette and even sandbanks and rock formation, which combine to shape the quality of our waves.

We also do fitness in and out of the water on Mondays and Wednesday mornings at 5:30 a.m. I love seeing the ‘froth’ on their faces when they start seeing improvement in their surfing and overall understanding.

Would you describe your core values as progressive or old school?

I definitely have old school values with a hint of progressiveness. You are only as good as your word, and we are all a product of our environment.

40 // Salty Summer HEADING
“I’ve worked tirelessly to design boards for kids who rip and we are getting great success.”
BILLY BAIN
LUKE ‘HOWIE’ HOWARTH, OWNER, HOWIE SHAPES

You have helped a lot of young surfers achieve their dreams. What young stars have you sponsored?

I’ve sponsored a lot of kids over the years from around the Northern Beaches. I’ve been making boards for Ollie Heintz for the past 5 years. He is currently on the North Shore of Oahu (Hawaii) for their Winter season, and then to Europe to compete in an Olympic qualifier event.

I’ve been making surfboards for two young brothers, Balin (13 years old) and Loci (11 years old) Cullen, for the past three years. These kids are amazing! Locana can stomp air-reverses, and he surfs beyond his years. Balin is hardworking, and he has an ‘Occy’-esque backside attack. They are both currently among the top surfers for their age in Australia. They are also now headed to Hawaii for their first season on the North Shore.

Billy Bain, who works with me on the larger-scale equipment, is Captain of ‘Team Howie’. He is a prize-winning sculptor and son of legendary ex-Pro surfer, Rob Bain.

Then there’s my daughter ‘Jassy’ (16 years old); she helps out with our longboards and retro models. Others to mention are Sam Bond from Newport, Luke Bugg from Clifton Beach in Tasmania, and Eliza and Rosie Richardson from Noosa Heads. Eliza being recently crowned the U14’s Australian Champion. 6/89

We hear your daughter Jasmin has followed in your footsteps. You must be pretty proud? Jasmin is an amazing young woman—kind, thoughtful and understanding. She’s an excellent longboarder and competes at a level far beyond what I ever could have hoped for. She’s already won a couple of major events in Australia, and is the current U18’s Aussie Champion (Log Division). There’s more to come with a little more hard work and juggling school work. So yes, I’m very proud.

What does it take to become a professional surfer? Firstly, have an amazing ability to surf. Then comes dedication, in and out of the water, together with a solid support network, major sponsorship or the backing of your parents and a mentor. Finally, a good understanding of your surfing equipment and the guidance from the person making it.

You are an inspiration within the community. How do you see your role in supporting the next generation?

I am a long-time member of the

(NASA), and head judge at their surfing competitions. I volunteer my time because I believe in giving back to my community.

If you met your younger self, what would you tell him? We are only human. Make mistakes and learn from them. Know when you are wrong and apologise. Treat people the way you want to be treated. Strive to be better every day. Follow your dreams and learn to sacrifice things to achieve greatness. Don’t ever give up in whatever you do in life and love and respect those closest to you. •

At Northern Beaches Skin Cancer Clinic in Warriewood, saving lives is part of the job. Read on to see how one local’s recent check up saved his life.

Growing up in the sunshine on the beach certainly contributes to our lucky country vibes, except when skin cancer comes to play.

Australia officially has the second highest rate of melanoma in the world, and two in three Aussies will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer by the time they are 70.

New treatments and therapies are changing the odds for patients if and when skin cancers are discovered and taken care of early by doctors who have completed extra study and expertise in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer.

And the truth is, even if you only have one routine check, once a year, it will be a great year that will give you peace of mind.

Two weeks ago, a 42-year-old man presented for his annual skin check at Northern Beaches Skin Cancer Clinic. He pointed out to his doctor that there was a new lesion growing on his neck, and it was rubbing on his collar.

The patient wasn’t too worried by the lump but requested his doctor remove it as it had become annoying. His skin cancer doctor agreed the lesion should be removed as the cause of the lump was unknown, and it needed a diagnosis. The removal would also stop the irritation.

Even through the skin cancer doctor’s magnifier, called a dermatoscope, the lesion did not look too sinister. Often at a skin check, what the patient feels is

sinister, the doctor may find benign or harmless. And the converse also applies. What the patient feels is benign may well be a life-threatening lesion.

After removal and diagnosis, the patient’s annoying lump was a melanoma measuring 8.5mm deep. Within two days, he was seen by specialists at the melanoma unit.

The best news from this story was that the cancer had not spread, and the lump has since been more widely excised.

Had this wise patient not attended for his routine skin cancer check, this story may not have had such a positive ending.

Summer is here, and the sun is shining. Before you go spending endless days on the beach, book an appointment and get your skin checked. This is one crucial appointment that may just save your life. •

SUMMER DAYS electric

Summer’s here! If cruising the Beaches with the wind in your hair sounds like just the way you want to spend your long lazy days, an e-bike should be on your wishlist. Energy Electric Bikes in Brookvale have the lowdown.

It doesn’t get much better than riding around on an e-bike, in your boardies or sundress, on a hot Saturday afternoon.

Whether you’re travelling to your favourite beach, heading to the city (via ferry) or saving money on Uber rides, e-bikes have quickly become the healthiest and most economical mode of transport for the Summer.

Imagine effortlessly pedalling up the hill to Long Reef Headland or stopping off for fish and chips at Ocean Master Newport. If you don’t fancy tracking the hills and the traffic between Mosman and Palm Beach, this sexy two-wheeler is probably your new best friend.

Research also shows e-bikes are an excellent form of aerobic and cardiovascular exercise, even for experienced mountain bikers. And while we roll on towards New Year’s Eve and resolutions start weighing on your mind, an e-bike could be the best alternative to your next half-used gym membership. Believe us, we know what that feels like.

A LOCAL’S PERSPECTIVE

Earlier this year, we discovered ebikerdiary.com, a personal blog by Richard Alaba, an energetic local who loves to explore the Beaches on his e-bike.

Richard shares information and adventures on all the best rides on the Beaches and around NSW.

“This blog is different in two ways,” says Richard on his website.

“It is for road-averse riders who place high priority on safety, and it tries to show what the ride looks like rather than worry about maps and riding data. This means all posted routes avoid riding on roads, and there are lots of photos of what to expect.”

As an e-bike enthusiast, Richard has posted over 120 rides including hundreds of kilometres of visual delights on the Northern Beaches. Check out www.ebikerdiary.com for his Northern Beaches Grand Loop story for epic photography, a sweet

run-down of the ride and a wonderful three minute video to get you inspired for the Summer.

If you’re thinking about venturing further afield, Richard’s blog also includes rides in Melbourne, Albury, Wollongong, Newcastle, Thredbo, Jindabyne and Uluru. Each tour is described in terms of start and finish points, scenic highlights, overall length, approximate time taken, plus a map. And with 20 years of professional photography experience, it’s worth visiting just for the photos.

So, what are you waiting for? Leave the car, scooter and BMX in the garage, grab a test ride at Energy Electric Bikes in Brookvale and get ready to make the most out of your Summer.

Oh, and did we mention, Monday to Friday will look a whole lot better on the back of an e-bike too. If peak hour traffic does your head in, this might be the most worthy investment you make in 2023. •

yourself slim.

Summer is here, and the beach is calling. If your swimwear drawer fills you with dread, the friendly team at °CRYO Stay Young in Freshwater can help you shred inches instantly with their revolutionary non-invasive °CRYO Slim technology.

°CRYO Stay Young offers a unique blend of therapies from cryotherapy to acupuncture and cupping, culminating in powerful beauty treatments that will have you looking and feeling your best this Summer.

°CRYO SLIM & BODY SCULPTING: LOSE AN INCH IN 60 MINUTES

CRYO Slim uses thermal shock technology, a non-invasive procedure to help you lose inches instantly with no downtime. Therapists use massagelike movements over the treated area, contrasting heat with extreme cold, carefully manipulating the body contour while firming skin. There is no bruising or tenderness of the skin following the treatment. Any area of concern can be targeted; love handles, abdomen, legs, or arms. You’ll emerge looking better with no downtime. That might be the best news you’ll hear all Summer.

TARGETING CELLULITE

°CRYO Slim promotes collagen production in the skin, which repairs broken connections in the tissue and reduces cellulite. Precisely controlled cooling can kill fat cells and help you achieve your ideal body shape with a smoother skin tone after just a few sessions.

CELLULITE CUPPING

To boost the effectiveness of °CRYO Slim, add cellulite cupping to your treatment. This targeted approach addresses the cause of poor blood circulation, lymphatic issues, fluid retention and hormonal imbalances. The suction of the cups breaks up cellulite and improves the texture of the skin.

MUSCLE TONING

Thermal shock technology can be used to create muscle tone, reduce stubborn fat deposits and make the skin smooth. This is an easy step towards a chiseled body, and we recommend combining this with your fitness and nutrition regime.

°CRYO GLOW FACIAL

The °CRYO Glow facial is so effective that it’s become known as FROTOX, a non-invasive alternative to botox. The extreme cold tightens the skin by contracting the collagen fibres, resulting in a younger-looking appearance. It also works to reduce pigmentation and sun spots. The treatment allows for your make up to be on for a quick blast right before an important event so you look refreshed with the perfect glow.

°CRYO FACELIFT

Offering a pleasant, non-invasive alternative to fillers, the °CRYO Facelift treatment is the easiest way to get instant results with no downtime. This anti-ageing freeze treatment boosts collagen production and blood flow to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. With visible results achieved in just one session, this treatment is a must-try.

Head to www.stayyoungcryo.com.au to book a FREE consultation with the friendly team. •

“I love getting °CRYO facials. My skin looks and feels great and my complexion has evened out. The °CRYO Slim treatment also reduces stubborn fat, and the results keep getting better after every treatment.”

“I’ve always had stubborn fat around my stomach and despite training, I haven’t been able to get rid of it. That was until I discovered °CRYO Slim & Muscle toning treatment. After just one treatment, I lost centimetres around my waist and now I look and feel better than ever.” DARREN, FRESHWATER

Studio 8 Mosman - www.studio8hair.com 64 SALTY FINDS 66 SUMMER HAIR 70 THE GOLDEN AGE 77 OCEAN SWIMMING

Mosman’s Calling

Studio 8, one of the most sought-after hair salons in Manly, has finally found a second home. This luxurious salon, offering high-end hairdressing services, will now be available to the people of Mosman. With its amazing team of stylists and a whole new clientele, Studio 8 is sure to become an instant success.

Opening in the new year, the new Mosman space features high ceilings and large windows to allow plenty of natural light.

The airy, spacious location has been carefully designed to revolutionise the hair salon experience.

From the calming spa-like basin area where clients can enjoy a relaxing head massage to the balcony terrace, clients can sip coffee and reply to emails while their colour develops.

“We understand that as well as leaving our salon with gorgeous hair, time is really precious to our clients,” says Jenner Dickinson, Founder of Studio 8 Manly and Mosman.

“They’re either trying to multitask their salon appointment with work commitments, or get in some much needed me time.”

With this in mind, Jenner has designed the salon to support a ‘work from salon’ appointment with allocated workspaces and laptop charging stations.

Alternatively, clients that want to switch off can opt for a ‘silent service’. This is where they can pop in their

earphones and listen to a podcast or read a book with minimal interference from the salon’s staff.

Studio 8 Hair opened its doors on the Northern Beaches five years ago. Since then, the team has tripled in size to keep up with customer demand.

Low maintenance, lived-in blondes and sun-kissed balayage became their specialty, which drove the business. Today, the team pride themselves on using a unique technique of zonal foiling and toning along with beachy waves.

The biggest challenge to Studio 8’s growth has been staffing. To tackle this, Jenner has trained up the next generation of hair superstars through an in-house training scheme that ensures all stylists meet their high

standards and can create signature Studio 8 hair.

“The next hurdle for the Manly salon was that it was bursting at the seams,” says Jenner. “But this was a nice problem to have.”

“An expansion was well overdue and finding the perfect space took a while,” says Jenner. “But we found it and my team are so excited to be introducing Studio 8 into Mosman village.”

Studio 8 Mosman opens on Monday 23rd January 2023. Jenner and her hairstylists are eager to offer their services to the locals of the Mosman and the North Shore.

Studio 8 Mosman are now taking bookings. To make an appointment, visit www.studio8hair.com.au. •

Dancing in Midlife

In midlife, women can feel invisible. Dreams from youth get abandoned in a tidal wave of children and responsibilities. Then you are spat out the other side feeling lost and lacking purpose. It is easy to forget where you started. Bettina Deda, Author and Wellness Coach, tells us how to navigate our way through this stage of life with grace and ease.

Did you always want to write a book, learn to dance, start a new hobby, or give back to the community?

Do you find yourself thinking that you are going to do it ‘one day’ when you have more time, are retired, or the kids have moved out?

Unfortunately for many people, this day never comes.

On 31 December 2016, a 90-minute Kahuna massage turned my life upside down. It is in these pivotal moments when we have two options; we can use them as a springboard to change or stay in our comfort zone and become a victim of our circumstances.

I chose to change and set out on a journey of exploration and transformation, which requires courage, trust, and faith. I also made some conscious choices to navigate this challenging time of my life.

Here are my five tips to navigate midlife smoothly:

TIP #1: ASK FOR HELP

What are you missing out on because you are not asking? Get help from a life coach, natural health practitioner or become part of a supportive community that has your back. There are many opportunities online and in person to connect, learn, and embrace change.

TIP #2: ESTABLISH A MORNING ROUTINE Establishing routines is the most powerful

lever to get things done. To start the day centred and grounded, try meditation, yoga, journaling on intentions and goals, and practising gratitude.

TIP #3: SHIFT YOUR ENERGY

Are you finding yourself stuck in negative emotions? Energy is everything. How can you shift your energy to positive emotions? A simple exercise is to remind yourself of moments when you felt happy and empowered. Close your eyes, imagine yourself in that moment, and take three deep breaths. Go where you find joy. Connect with nature through daily walks.

TIP #4: SURROUND YOURSELF WITH POSITIVE PEOPLE

You are the average of the five people you spend your time with. Who are these people in your life? Set boundaries around your day, activities, and the people you deal with.

TIP #5: EMBRACE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Choose healthier living and eating habits that fuel your body and mind to show up at your best. Consider changes in your diet, do a body cleanse, take up a new hobby, and learn how to meditate and live more mindfully.

Remember: In every moment, we have a choice–a choice between a grievance and a miracle. So choose wisely!

Are you ready to bring fun and purpose back into your life? Visit my website or give me a call on 0424 615 503. •

At Whetstone, we have a long history of transforming hair to be beautiful and flourishing. For any service at our salon, you get to take-home a complimentary* hair treatment from De Lorenzo. This will ensure that your locks continue to be soft and bouncy.

BETTINA DEDA
A h b t f C Y Years WE’RE CELEBRATING

In this coming-of-age story, Bettina stands at the crossroads that so many women before her have navigated.

Bettina had no idea that a massage could change her life, but that is exactly what happened during a 90-minute spiritual dance that turned her life upside down.

Many chapters in her life had come to an end and a new path was emerging. Rather than hurtling through her days, she started feeling her way through each moment.

Her memoir centres on her big year of change and the eventual realisation that she was living her mother's life, not her own.

The process of finding her own truth leads her to a new love: ballroom dancing.

By putting her life and learning into perspective, Bettina offers an empowering read for those wishing to celebrate the second half of their lives.

TheGoldenAge.

Alana Ellis, 25, has a remarkable eye for timeless and exquisite jewellery. One of Australia’s youngest and most passionate entrepreneurs, she is building a tribe of customers and employees who are destined to be loyal for decades to come.

As a young girl, Alana Ellis loved making jewellery. She would design and handcraft beaded bracelets to sell at her school fete, and by the time high school rolled around, her project became her passion. Friends noticed the unique, statement pieces she was wearing - and they wanted in.

“My friends were definitely my first customers,” smiles Alana. “They fell in love with the jewellery I was making in my bedroom, so I made more pieces and gave them away.”

As her jewellery business evolved, Alana started to work with materials that were longer lasting. That’s when the brand, Alana Maria, was born.

“A friend suggested that I start an Instagram page so people could contact me directly, so I did. I was working out of my bedroom and eventually it turned into my workshop. People would come to our house, up to my bedroom, and shop from my desk.”

Eventually, Alana’s parents became ‘funny’ about strangers coming and going from the house, so she had to make a decision.

“When it got to that stage, I created a website and not long after, secured the lease for my first shop in Freshwater. I set up the backroom with two desks and that was our HQ for a little while. We quickly outgrew the space so I got an office. Now we have a workshop, warehouse and two more stores. That was three years ago.”

As far as time goes, this entrepreneur is not slowing down. A year after securing the lease in Freshwater, Alana opened a store in everyone’s favourite beachside hub, Byron Bay. Three hundred and sixty five days after that, she became the youngest leaseholder in Westfield Bondi Junction.

“Securing the space for our flagship store in Bondi Junction this year was a huge milestone for the business. It’s not easy to get into Bondi,” she says.

“We were unsure if we would see a big response on the opening weekend, but we did. Customers began lining up at 5am, and by the time we opened, over 200 people were in line.”

According to her team, ‘If you could enter Alana’s mind, the Bondi flagship store is just what you would see.’ Having grown fast and organically, it’s not surprising Alana’s team has grown with her. The female-led company is now run by 50 women with a very conscious focus on employing locals.

BEYOND OUR Salty Beaches

Jill Healy Quintard, from Body & Balance, just won two awards at this year’s AUSActive awards. Travelling with her husband, Didier, on their ‘Magical Mystery Australia Adventure tour’, the couple are continuing to discover new places and new friends with the people they meet along the way.

Didier and I set out on this trip four months ago, from Manly travelling up the east coast of Australia, visiting friends along the way. We’ve celebrated birthdays and anniversaries along the way and gotten out of our comfort zones to explore the outback and beyond.

We’re seeing incredible diversity in landscapes, and the people who inhabit them. Most of the people we’ve met are from other countries around the world, drawn here by their desire to work and live in Australia. Many are working long days as they learn new skills, mostly in the outback.

When we tell people we’re from Manly, a beachside suburb in Sydney, they often say that it sounds like a wonderful place to be. They say they’d love to live there because of the beach, sun and surf, as well as the fact that it only takes a short ferry ride from the centre of the city.

We’re meeting people from all over the world. In the towns of Kuranda, Cairns, Cooktown, Atherton, Mt Isa, Coober Pedy and Alice Springs, we’re talking with fruit pickers, sheep shearers, cattle musterers, cleaners and cooks. And these aren’t their normal jobs; they’re coming to Australia and learning a new skill just to fill the positions vacant.

Recently, I met Carlos from Brazil. He’s on a P&O cruise ship and working in the kitchen right now. He had come to Manly for the day and said to me, “Australia is similar to Brazil, but with better opportunities.” Carlos is actually trained as a Kinesiologist. He saw a promotional video of Sydney and loved the lifestyle it showed. This included a trip to Manly. So on his day off (he only gets one day off per month on the ship), he popped onto the Manly ferry to see for himself what Manly was all about. He loved it. Carlos

would love to stay here and perhaps practice as a Kinesiologist and train as as a Physiotherapist, but he needs to investigate his visa opportunities in order to do so.

I have enjoyed learning about the Indigenous people as well as sharing my unique classes and dancing on my trip. I have a passion for sharing stories of diversity—stories like those of Steven, who spent his life discovering the wisdom of his heritage and imparting it to others after a life of drugs, crime and jail time.

Didier and I met him in Central Australia and talked for hours. He is a wise man who has been trained as an electrician and now trains apprentices while travelling his land gathering more knowledge to communicate to young Indigenous people who are also searching for who they are. People like Steven make Australian diversity very special.

I was thrilled to accept two awards last October from the 2022 AUSactive Awards. The Yoga Business Award and National Pilates Professional Award further validated my passion for teaching my fusions of yoga and Pilates.

I’m very excited to continue offering YogaPilates, BodyBarre, Tribal Fusion, Yoga Nidra classes, facilitating gatherings for women, and speaking at events while I’m travelling around the country.

This Summer, I’m offering two challenges for anyone who wants to push themselves and delve into my world of yoga, Pilates and dance.

I want to help you get ready for your next party celebration, so I’m giving away a one-month membership to Body

and Balance’s online classes for those who complete in my 25 push-ups in 25 days challenge. I love this program and promise you will feel the difference after just five days!

“WOW!” exclaimed Gail. “I’ve done this challenge with Jill before and it got me in shape and feeling great!”

My second offer is for one to win a one hour consult with me to help you reach your fitness goals. I’ll get to know you and your personal needs to help guide you to live your best life. Simply email jill@bodyandbalance.com.au in 25 words or less, “My greatest fitness and wellness challenge is…”

While I continue to help people find their inner MindBody Balance, I encourage any fitness instructors who are interested to learn from my free course, “Keeping Your Working Body Fit”. It won me an award from the Women’s Economic Forum this year.

I continue to love my nomadic lifestyle. I hope to empower others to live their fullest lives, too. I’d love to hear from Beaches COVERED. readers, especially the women of Australia and how you would love to improve your movement in life. •

A deeper connection TO THE BEACH

Do you know someone who’s a bit of a seagull when it comes to other people’s chips? Or a friend that can dance with captivating fluidity? In Homeopathy, we can have acute remedies for specific short term health symptoms such as hayfever, but we also have constitutional remedies. A constitutional remedy is matched to the person, by their personality, physicality, and typical health issues. The process is not dissimilar to the approach in acute prescribing; however, it is in greater depth.

When you find your constitutional remedy, you can use this to boost your vitality as it is true to you and your needs. These remedies can be made from animal, plant or mineral, and the chemical properties or physical nature of them can curiously often match the physical nature of the person as well. With these ocean and beach based examples, it is important to note that not all the symptoms or traits have been listed, more so the ones that provide the curious similarities.

CUTTLE FISH

Homeopathic name: Sepia Oicinalis Predatory or dominant in nature, a love of swimming, and the love of speed, particularly the idea of

swimming fast in water. This fits with the source of the remedy, as the cuttlefish is a highly evolved predatory mollusc, a cephalopod, capable of moving at speed by means of jet propulsion. Moreover, they have a desire for and capability of independence, and a love of dancing. These are all very much part and parcel of Sepia’s characteristics.

OYSTER SHELL

Homeopathic name: Calcarea Carbonica

The oyster forms a shell and builds. The character of the person connected to this remedy is like an oyster without a shell; feeling unprotected with a fear of losing reason or that people will see them in a state of confusion.

JELLYFISH

Homeopathic name: Medusa

The physical characteristics are pricking heat and numbness of the skin on the face, arms, and breasts; all similar symptoms of being stung by a jellyfish. An unforgettable feeling for those that have experienced it.

SEA SALT

Homeopathic name: Natrium Muriaticum

A person connected to this remedy can have an unquenchable thirst and strong sensitivity to sunlight.

Northern Beaches Natural Therapies

They often absorb and retain water and other body fluids. Bloating and water retention are also issues with regular headaches or migraines.

SEA WATER

Homeopathic remedy name: Aqua marina

A person will have the sensation of a hair or fishbone in their throat. They will suffer from seasickness and nausea.

SEA SPONGE

Homeopathic remedy name: Spongia Tosta

Spongia Tosta is a remedy for dry mucous membranes (mouth, nose, throat, and larynx). These can be improved with warm water. They may wake at night with a fear of being squashed or suffocated. They will also have an excessive thirst and great hunger.

SEAGULL

Homeopathic remedy name: Larus argentatus

As with the bird, those that will benefit from a seagull remedy, like to keep physical contact to a minimum. However, in a contradictory sense, they are also not comfortable with being completely alone. This leads to fights breaking out around food or protecting their family. It’s a familiar scene amongst the insatiable appetites of seagulls at any Northern Beaches beachside cafe.

These constitutional remedies are not used for acute complaints or for home prescribing. To learn more, contact Harbord Homeopathic Clinic at www.hhcc.com.au or call 9905 9415. •

Ocean swimming

I’ve often looked enviously at the pink clad Bold and Beautiful swimmers tackling the Manly to Shelly Beach swim. My goal is to one day join this courageous group. However, the thought of swimming outside of the flags fills me with dread.

I grew up in England where beachside endeavours were sparse and childhood swimming lessons ended once parents deemed you no longer a drowning risk. To me ‘freestyle’ is a dance move and ‘butterfly’ is an insect. I’m less than confident that my signature Mum-style breaststroke would serve me well heading out into the deep.

Enter Narelle, an expert in the field, honoured in the Australian Hall of Fame for marathon swimming and has trained many highly decorated open water swimmers in her career. She also runs adult ‘learn to swim’ programs. If anyone can transform you from a basic swimmer to a confident ocean swimmer, she can. Her philosophy is ‘Swimming: A life skill forever’ but is it too late to start? Can you teach an old dog new tricks?

‘Of course you can do it,” laughs Narelle. “It is never too late to start.”

Here is Narelle’s advice to get you swimming confidently in our amazing ocean this Summer.

LEARNING THE STROKES

“Whatever your current level, we can help you achieve your ocean goals.

We offer adult swimming classes at both the Manly and Brookvale pools. Our ‘Learn to Swim’ program at Brookvale caters for absolute beginners. Stroke correction classes are also held at Manly for more experienced swimmers,” says Narelle.

BUILDING STAMINA

“Often people have difficulty swimming because of issues with their breathing. Going from the pool to the ocean is all about confidence and stamina. Once this is built and a relaxed breathing pattern is achieved, moving to the ocean isn’t hard. Swimming in an ocean pool will help you acclimatise to the buoyancy of saltwater. Always start with shorter distances and build,” says Narelle.

WHAT ABOUT THE WILDLIFE?

“Cabbage Tree Bay is home to some incredible sealife which can be both a drawcard and deterrent to new ocean swimmers. A good way to build confidence is to snorkel from Shelly Beach. You’ll get used to seeing the wildlife and begin to feel less threatened by it. From here, you can build your confidence to travel further from the shore line. You’ll see the most incredible things on the swim, none of which have any intention to hurt you. Remember, you are in their territory,” explains Narelle.

RIDING THE WAVES

“It’s about breath control and understanding how to dive under small waves, at the beginning, and using the ocean bottom for stability. This can

start in the pool by practising dolphin diving, a skill that teaches you how to move under water to come to the surface. You can then progress to practising at the beach when it’s calm. You’ll need to learn how and when to take your breath at the surface. There is much more to this skill than meets the eye, but there are progressions to teach all ability levels to gain confidence navigating waves,” says Narelle.

GOING THE DISTANCE

“Once you have built confidence in your stroke, you will need to build your endurance. The Manly to Shelly Beach swim is 750 metres each way.

“I stress breath control and being relaxed. There is nothing wrong with wearing full fins, then shorter fins, then progress to no fins at all. Break up the swim into three or four sections and challenge yourself, building the distance as your strength and confidence grow.

“It is important to always swim with somebody,” shares Narelle. “You can always rollover and float for a rest. It’s all about feeling relaxed and being patient with yourself. Be kind to yourself, and you will achieve your goal.”

Thanks for the amazing advice, Narelle. There is no excuse now. I’ll see you in the surf.

One of the most commonly asked questions about Dee Why is where its unusual name came from. The answer is unclear, but many believe it was inspired by the notes of surveyor, James Meehan, who recorded the first written reference to Dee Why in September 1815 — referring to the beach as ‘DY’.

Beach Life.

SURF’S UP!

In Australia, the Northern Beaches was the birthplace of surfboard riding, and it has continued to grow in popularity ever since. From Brookvale’s innovative board making scene in the 1950s to the first World Surfing Championship competition in 1964, the Northern Beaches is where countless iconic moments took place. The community is still home to the likes of world champions like Midget Farrelly, Tom Carroll and Layne Beachley, who have showcased Australia’s talent on a global stage.

When it comes to picking your perfect break, you’ll be spoiled for choice. Just moments from Hamptons by Rose is Dee Why Point and Long Reef — all of which are popular go-to spots for local surfers. Butter Box and Brown Water are popular for hydrofoiling and kite surfing too.

There’s a good reason why so many people gravitate towards the Northern Beaches. With the ocean on your doorstep, life immediately becomes more relaxed and attuned with nature — especially the beach itself. Whether you’re a keen surfer or simply love to watch the waves roll in, the beach has a magnetic pull that’s hard to resist.

DIVE IN, CAST OFF, SAIL AWAY

Swimming can dovetail nicely into your social life in Dee Why, thanks to the area’s various organised swim clubs.

Founded in 1947, Dee Why RSL Swim Club is one of the oldest, with a season running from October to Easter. The club meets at Dee Why Rockpool every Sunday morning, rain, hail or shine, and even hosts its own annual swimming carnival. And if you’re brave enough to swim through the Winter months, the Dee Why Icepicks will no doubt love to hear from you!

If you’d rather spend your weekend on the water, not in it, there are plenty of opportunities to do just that. Learn to sail, windsurf or kayak at nearby Manly, and spend weekends cruising around secluded bays and hidden coves. With moorings, wharves and boat ramps dotting the coastline, having a boat of your own is no longer an impossible dream.

For keen fishermen and women, there are also plenty of spots to throw in a line, including Dee Why Cliff Reserve, Dee Why Lagoon and North Curl Curl Shelf. Just be sure to stick to current regulations, as they change throughout the year.

ROCKPOOLS A PLENTY

If you enjoy a dip, there’s possibly no better place to live than here. As well as the many patrolled beaches within arm’s reach, the Northern Beaches has many natural rockpools to enjoy — giving you the unbeatable feeling of ocean water with the safety of a swimming pool. Dee Why boasts an Olympic-length pool with a toddler area, while nearby Collaroy Rockpool is easily accessible for those with a need for a ramp. Further afield, there are more rockpools at Freshwater, Curl Curl, Mona Vale, Whale Beach and Bilgola to name a few. •

NATURAL BEAUTY

Discover the beauty of Dee Why. Our pristine beaches, coastal walkway and Stony Range Regional Botanic Garden all offer unique walking experiences. If you have time for just one stroll, make it down Long Reef Headland and across along Long Reef Beach to Dee Why Beach. With breathtaking views, it’s another must-see for those looking for an outdoor experience. Go on—take a walk on the wild side and experience Dee Why.

Curl Curl and Dee Why beaches, the rugged sandstone headland has breathtaking ocean views. It also acts as an important wildlife corridor. The walk takes around 45 minutes, and you can start at either end — but be warned, it’s quite a workout!

For a more leisurely option, there’s also the Long Reef Headland walk, which is a little longer but has a well-defined path, and equally lovely views.

FISHERMAN’S BEACH

A DOGGY DREAM COME TRUE

STONY RANGE REGIONAL BOTANIC GARDENS

One of Dee Why’s true hidden gems is Stony Range Regional Botanic Garden. An oasis of native plants, it has a network of interconnected walkways to explore, all of which take you through a series of different micro-climates — from rainforest gully to sandstone heath to cascading waterfalls.

Famous for its floral displays and ‘bush tucker’, Stony Range is an idyllic place to while away the day, immersing yourself in the sights, sounds and fragrances of the Australian bush.

COASTAL WALKS

For a different kind of walk, Dee Why Headland is a spectacular slice of nature just minutes from home. Tucked between

When it comes to a post-walk picnic location, Fisherman’s Beach is a local secret that’s hard to beat.

Hidden between Collaroy Point and the northern base of Long Reef Point Headland, it’s a very sheltered and quiet bay that forms part of the aquatic reserve, making it a great place to snorkel too.

WELL ABOVE PAR

Golf is an undeniably popular pastime on the beaches, and you have a range of courses and clubs to choose from, including Cromer Golf Club, Bayview Golf Club and Terrey Hills Pitch & Putt. And of course, we can’t forget Long Reef Golf Course, which happens to be the finest beach-front golf course in the whole of Sydney — not to mention your local!

DID YOU KNOW?

While much of the area’s Indigenous heritage has been sadly lost, we believe it was once home to several Aboriginal clans, including the Gayamaygal, Gamaragal, Garigal and Darramurragal people.

At Dee Why’s southern end, there is evidence of a midden and several rock engravings remain in nearby areas.

The Northern Beaches is a wonderfull dog-friendly place to call home, with over 29 off-leash dog parks — and at Hamptons by Rose, some of the very best are just minutes from home. Stretching most of the way down Curl Curl beach is the fabulous Flora and Richie Robert Reserve, which is off-leash 24/7 and gives water-loving pups direct access to the lagoon. Bayview and Sandy Bay Reserve are also great for dogs who like the water.

FOR THE KIDS

Kids need to burn off some steam? Head to your newly revamped local, Walter Gors Park, which boasts playgrounds, water gardens, BBQ facilities and more. Just off Dee Why Strand, there’s also Michaela Howie Playground, which offers a shady retreat that’s perfect after a beach session in the sun. •

by designHAMPTONS

Like all Rose communities, the Hamptons vision began with a particularly special piece of land. Handpicked for its proximity to both the beach and amenities, this hilltop site has a feel that’s surprisingly secluded and tranquil.

Home to the heritage-listed Pacific Lodge building, it’s also steeped in the history of Dee Why and has abundant natural beauty.

“Our design for Hamptons by Rose certainly centres on the site’s unique character,” explains Rose Architect, Shayne Jewell. “It’s all about creating a neighbourhood that's timeless and elegant, that works in harmony with the surrounding landscape. A place that looks like it could have always been there.”

Surrounded by countless mature trees, including soaring eucalyptus and Norfolk pines, it’s no surprise that Hamptons by Rose feels nestled in nature.

“We really wanted to create a connection between the built form and nature,” explains Shayne.

“This comes through in many ways, including our choice of materials and colour palette. The base of the building is a beautiful textured sandstone that speaks to the site’s natural rock forms, and the light rendered finishes are offset by dark brown weather boards reminiscent of the surrounding trees. Even the height of the buildings varies according to the tree line and the undulations of the landscape.”

While this development reflects Rose’s signature Hamptons style, it has been given a slightly contemporary twist.

“The highly detailed façade is accentuated by a sophisticated palette of materials,” notes Shayne.

“Of course, the Hamptons style is all about the outdoorsy beach lifestyle, which couldn’t be more appropriate here. All the apartments have generous verandahs or courtyards, spaces that are

designed to be used and enjoyed. And some of the apartments on the upper levels capture incredible views over the ocean to the horizon. Sitting up there will feel like being in a treehouse, but with the world at your feet.”

Landscaping and heritage are once again core values for a new Rose community.

“The key focal point is Pacific Lodge — a beautiful 1890s-era building that was the first permanent home built in Dee Why, and once a Home of Rest for Salvation Army officers,” explains Shayne.

“When planning Hamptons by Rose, we took extra care to ensure this treasure could be easily seen from many directions. Around the lodge, there’s a more formal garden. Then there are two other key landscaping ‘zones’: a native section along the southern rock face, and the internal community parkland which surrounds the residences.

HAMPTONS BY ROSE
Artist impression

We want people to be able to really enjoy and use this common garden, so we’ve integrated many different ‘pause points’ or outdoor rooms where people can take a moment to stop, relax and soak it all in.”

From the luscious landscaping to the finest interior details, the common thread here is deep consideration and attention to detail.

“Every tiny aspect of these homes has been carefully thought through. We’ve spent as much time thinking about what these homes look like from the inside as we have considering the exteriors,” says Shayne.

“We want this to be a place that's beautiful to be — a place that is comfortably elegant.”

A Catalyst TOWARDS AN EASY FUTURE

There has never been a better time to seek mortgage advice. The pinch has been fierce, and many of us are walking a financial tight-rope. We caught up with Jonathan Valentino from award winning mortgage broker, Catalyst, to find out how their services can help.

Who is Catalyst?

We’re a team of locally based, highlyqualified mortgage brokers dedicated to providing holistic financial services to real estate-focused clients. Our offices are in the Sydney CBD and Dee Why.

As leading experts in our field, we settle many transactions each year, giving us a deep knowledge of the lending landscape. Our intimate relationships with our lender partners allow us to achieve superior results for clients.

What services do you provide?

It can be a tricky process to borrow money, but we can help. We will navigate you through the process of purchasing a home, investment property, or commercial property.

We can also help with refinancing and accessing equity within your property for renovations or future investment opportunities. We offer finance assistance to businesses as well as

clients looking to buy within their SelfManaged Super Fund (SMSF).

What are the main benefits behind seeking professional advice before buying property?

We are able to access the same systems and calculators that banks use to determine your borrowing capacity. We use this figure, as well as the savings or funds you can access, to work out your maximum purchase price by factoring in all of the associated costs that come with purchasing property (i.e. stamp duty, legal fees etc.).

We advise working with a good conveyancer or lawyer to review the Contract of Sale, strata reports and building and pest inspection reports. They’ll be able to spot any potential issues in those reports that could be a big factor when purchasing a property.

Thirdly, you’ll want to get opinions from local real estate agents on what they

think the property is worth and what’s happening in the area or suburb where you’re considering buying. They can also advise on similar properties recently sold in the area so that you know your price is fair compared to those sold recently.

What are the key differences between borrowing from a bank or a non-bank?

The only real difference between banks and non-banks is that banks have a branch network, although most banks are progressively reducing the number of branches available.

All banks and lenders have different niche policies that suit specific financial positions, goals and objectives. Our role is to analyse our client’s financial position, discuss their goals and objectives, then review against the various bank and lender’s policies to see which is the best fit for our client.

We have a great relationship with all our banks and lenders which allows us to negotiate the best outcomes for the client.

How do you calculate how much an investor can and should borrow? “How much can I borrow.” That’s the million dollar question! The first thing we do is work out how much the bank will lend based on our client’s financial position and work out what their maximum purchase price is.

We then put together a property purchase budget, which will outline the holding costs and lending costs versus the income being generated from the property. This will give our client an accurate picture of what their ‘out of pocket’ expenses may be.

Affordability is a key consideration in this process as the client needs to be comfortable that they can meet the monthly repayments. In assessing the client’s borrowing capacity lenders will apply a buffer of around 3% over and above the actual interest rate to ensure that the loan repayments can be met if rates should rise during the term of the loan.

Expert advice certainly pays. If you are thinking of moving, investing or refinancing, head to the Catalyst website to book a consultation now. •

Expertly designed and furnished, Hamptons by Rose effortlessly conveys the extraordinary spirit of the Beaches. Step into the Dee Why showroom and you’ll be met with relaxed coastal vibes, thanks to the design expertise of Melita Bruvelis and Jess Crapis. As the Founders of Casa Locale, North Manly, this local duo are the frontrunners in creating breezy coastal interiors.

Zephyr Home is the Northern Beaches’ desired furniture and homewares store that captures the essence of our coastal life. Beaches COVERED. caught up with owner, Peta Sullivan, to talk rattan, sustainability and Madonna.

Zephyr, what a cool name!

How did it come about?

Twenty years ago, I first fell in love with the name Zephyr while listening to Madonna’s ‘Ray of Light’: “Zephyr in the sky at night, I wonder. Do my tears of morning sink beneath the sun?...”

I had never heard the word before. This was pre-Google so I had to look it up in a dictionary! I loved not only the sound of the word but also the meaning behind it. I knew that one day it would hold significance in my life.

The name Zephyr seemed fitting for the store. In Greek mythology, Zephyrus is the God of West wind and Spring. He is a warm, mild breeze that brings the Spring season awakening nature and ending Winter hibernation. Greek mythology considers Zephyr a bearer of Spring and early Summer breezes, while modern symbolism relates him with restoration, resurrection, waking up, and new beginnings.

Who is the creative mastermind behind this beautiful curation?

I personally source and curate the collection. I’m always sourcing and adding new products to the store. I have a love of all things home, which I think I inherited from my mother. When I was growing up, my mother loved antiques. We would drive around the countryside,

stopping at every antique store along the way. My Mum would drag me along while she searched for unique treasures. She has a natural sense of style and colour. Years later after renovating our family home, my passion for furniture and homewares deepened and the idea for Zephyr Home was born shortly after.

How does your shop reflect the Northern Beaches vibe?

The shop has a very calm, relaxed, coastal vibe that is synonymous with the Northern Beaches. Our furniture is inspired by our beautiful beaches and the coastal environment we live in.

What are your three hottest items currently available online and in store?

Our Belize Teak and Rattan Range is a top seller. Its natural finish and woven design make it ideal for coastal-inspired living spaces.

Our handcrafted Zanzibar Sun Lounge, made of premium teak and synthetic weave, is unique and highly popular among our customers. We’re currently getting more of these in stock. Watch this space for more information on availability!

Finally, the Zigi Teak and Leather Range in Olive is our most popular colour at the moment. Everyone’s wanting to get their hands on it.

Australia and Indonesia are both known for their expertly designed and crafted furniture. Where do you source your products?

We work with small business owners and furniture artisans in Indonesia who have been passing down their craft for generations. They create beautiful handmade items using sustainable materials that are legally sourced.

What is your approach to sustainability and the environment?

We only sell quality, slow-made furniture and homewares that will last a lifetime. We love rattan and the beautiful products it can create. Rattan is a tree climbing, vine-like plant that can only exist growing amongst established trees. It has the ability to grow back to maturity within five to seven years, making it a good alternative for loggers to the slow growing hardwood trees in the forest. Rattan encourages forest maintenance as it provides a profitable crop that depends on rather than replaces trees.

Some of our furniture is made from Sungkai, an Indonesian plantation-grown tree. This wood is beautifully light in colour and hugely popular in the Australian market. It evokes a feeling of coastal living.

FURNITURE IS A TAPESTRY OF WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU LOVE. YOUR HOME SHOULD TELL A STORY ABOUT YOU.”

PETA SULLIVAN, OWNER, ZEPHYR HOME

The Ministry of Forestry also recommends this timber for use in sustainable industrial forest plantations (IFPs) to reduce pressure on natural forests.

We also know that recycling is of the utmost importance when it comes to the environment. We take a number of measures to ensure that we use as many recyclable materials as possible in our packaging and responsibly recycle all recyclable waste from our warehouse and showroom.

Zephyr Home invites you to visit its showroom in Cromer for a personal shopping experience, available Wednesday through Saturday. Or, you can head online to check out the full range of beautiful furniture and homewares available at www.zephyrhome.com.au, anytime of the day or week.

LUCKY FOR US, SYDNEY IS FULL OF CREATIVE MINDS WHO LOVE DESIGN AS MUCH AS WE DO. MELITA BRUVELIS AND JESS CRAPIS ARE THOSE KINDS OF FOLK, AND FOUNDERS OF CASA LOCALE - THE LOCAL HOUSE. OSIER BELLE CAUGHT UP WITH THE TALENTED DUO TO TALK COLOUR, CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THE JOY OF CREATING COASTAL LIVING VIBES.

Casa Locale - The Local House, is an inspiring homewares store located on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. The shop was set up by Founders, Melita Bruvelis and Jess Crapis and born from a love of creating relaxed and coastal interiors.

“We both come from design, retail and customer service backgrounds and have worked together for seven years as the brand, Mayvn Interiors, and wholesale agent, Home Design & Co. Creating something together was a natural progression after navigating and surviving the lows of COVID and devastating storm damage,” says Jess.

The store's design-addicted pair admit they love anything and everything natural and textural when it comes to interiors.

“But we do appreciate the use of Teflonstandard polyester in the right scenario –dogs, kids, husbands…,” laughs Melita.

Casa Locale is a retail haven of gorgeous interior offerings including furniture, soft

furnishings, lighting, rugs, home décor, artwork and body and bath products.

“We have every colour in our wheelhouse reflecting the coast and the Northern Beaches; every shade of neutral to blues through greens. Greens are definitely having a hero moment right now. For a more contemporary coastal feel, rusts, tans and blacks, with a neutral base, are heavenly,” adds Jess.

INSPIRED BY ITALY

In Italian, Casa Locale translates to The Local House, which is Jess’s heritage and a healthy obsession of Melita’s since high school. Despite their European influences, the team loves to support local businesses and indulges in the local lifestyle.

“Some of our favourite local brands are Byrne and Love candles, Erin Masters Photography, The Pot Warehouse, Piega Window Furnishings and artist, Judy Salleh.”

And when it comes to customer service, these two are never more at home

than when they’re helping customers create their dream spaces.

“We love helping our clients with all the big and small design decisions. We offer everything from one-off furniture and artwork sourcing to custom upholstery. We have over 65 sofa designs to choose from that are made to order in Australia with a 10-year structural guarantee. We are also a great resource for colour consultation and wallpaper sourcing. And when it comes to choosing cushions, Melita is our resident cushion queen.”

Casa Locale services are also popular with owners of holiday and investment properties in the area.

“These kinds of homeowners definitely appreciate our set price and curated furniture packages where we have made the design decisions for them.”

As for their own dream homes, Jess and Melita agree they would share and exude these elements — timeless, relaxed, full of texture and collected treasures, with endless sunny spots to hang out with family and mates.

Beyond furnishings, Casa Locale is branching into a new space of inspiration with a stunning range of gift hampers. Themes include, ‘Coffee Lover’, ‘Cocktail Lover’, ‘Cheese Lover’ and ‘Welcome to the Beaches’.

One thing is for sure, these two love to inspire others and celebrate what’s on offer when you live on the Northern Beaches — the laid back and relaxed lifestyle, the ocean, the bushland, and living and entertaining outdoors. •

Dressing Windows

with Style

Piega is one of Sydney’s leading specialists in soft window treatments. Beaches COVERED. caught up with Director, Alison Walker, who’s inspired to create beautiful window treatments for our coastal lifestyle with her mobile showroom.

Well-chosen window treatments complete a room. To an already stylish room, they add warmth and elegance while window treatments can transform an otherwise plain room into a space that is warm and inviting.

We all want beautifully styled rooms. However, when you DIY without experience, you’re prone to making these mistakes.

Here are Piega's top five tips to help dress your windows in the best way possible.

HANGING CURTAINS AT THE WRONG LENGTH OR HEIGHT

Tip: Hang curtains high and long to make your windows seem larger.

NOT LAYERING FOR THE SEASONS AND LIGHT

Tip: Make your rooms comfortable all year with a translucent layer to reduce glare and a blockout layer with a thermal backing to darken the room for sleeping.

NOT UNDERSTANDING YOUR HOME’S STYLE

Tip: Every home has a style or mood. You need window treatments to enhance that mood or style.

LEAVING WINDOW TREATMENTS UNTIL LAST IN A NEW BUILD OR RENOVATION

Tip: Talk to your builder early so you don’t spend extra money retrofitting pelmets, power and any other fittings.

TRYING TO DIY WINDOW TREATMENTS

Tip: Get help from a professional who will help you customise your window treatments. Do it once, and do it well.

It's easy to dress your windows with Piega. To arrange a quote, contact Alison on 0448 677 003 or visit www.piega.com.au. •

Ahead of the Curve Staying

With curves riding waves into every aspect of modern design, Beaches COVERED. caught up with the team at Collaroy Kitchen Centre to get their tips on how to incorporate curves into new and existing kitchens.

SUAVE SHELVING

Using shelves to round out the corners in your kitchen can be an effective way to embrace the trend.

Curved open shelving has been taking the place of closed cabinets recently, styled with round storage jars and tonal crockery for a modern edge.

WELL-ROUNDED FITTINGS

Swapping out your fittings and hardware can also help to bring curves into your kitchen.

Rounded sinks, arched tapware and curved rangehoods contribute to a free-flowing fluid kitchen.

SULTRY LIGHTING

The modern kitchen has taken its cue from nature, inspiring colour palettes and arched shapes. Structured crisp, straight lines have been replaced with organic soft ones, creating a soothing environment.

Rounding out your edges can be on-trend without sacrificing a timeless feel in your kitchen. There are so many creative and inspiring ways to incorporate curves into your next kitchen. However, you don’t need to rip out your entire kitchen to achieve this effect in an existing space. Curves are welcoming and calming, but can also be sexy. They are enormously versatile and can be introduced in many ways.

ARCHITECTURAL WAVES

Arched doorways or window frames are an impactful nod towards sultry softness creating an unexpected and grand opening. Adding simple

corniced edges to your walls is a subtle extension to the trend.

Make a feature of supporting pillars, making them rounded and textured; think polished Colosseum.

ROUNDING OUT YOUR JOINERY

One of the bolder ways to embrace curves is with your joinery. Curved Island benches and cabinets create a striking accent when you first enter the kitchen.

Work with your space to incorporate impactful, statement curves on your benchtop or on the underside of your island. Concave lines, spheres and pillars all create gentle mesmerising supports to your benchtop.

Replace existing cupboard doors with scalloped edges for an instantly softer look.

Sculptural lighting is a fantastic place to add curvature. Sultry oversized pendants in neutral tones create dynamic geometry which can balance out straight lines in your kitchen and pull your space together.

CREATIVE ACCENTS

An oversized arched or round mirror is an effective way to add light and softness to your space. Art in a rounded frame or containing flowing shapes is a gentle way to exacerbate a rounded feel.

The simplest way to get curvy is by mixing up your decor. Add a statement fruit bowl, rounded cutting board or opt for rounded appliances where they will be on display. •

Summer

Lovin’

Bring the relaxed, holiday vibe of Summer inside with a few key items. Chunky rattan baskets and wicker plant stands add texture, while white and pale toned pots add a sense of light to rooms that may be short on windows. Natural timber tones plant stands and bowls can add to your natural, earth palette.

When you want to create the feeling of being at a tropical resort, palm trees, ferns, and foliage will give your home that essence. Plants not only make you feel good but also help remove toxins from the air so you have a healthier environment for your family to thrive. Create an indoor jungle by layering macrame and rope hanging baskets

coming down from the ceiling, trailing plants cascading from shelves, and big statement plants creating an indoor canopy.

PERFECT PALMS

You can find a palm to suit every spot in your home, inside or out. For bright corners, try a Golden Cane Palm with its bold gold stems; for lower light positions choose the darker foliage of the Kentia Palm, which is native to Lord Howe Island but happy to hang out on the mainland! Smaller spaces like coffee tables and bathroom vanities can suit Parlour Palms - a dainty yet hardy pot plant. And if you want to add some fronds to your terrace outside, opt for a Cabbage Leaf or Bismarck Palm - both famous for their fronds, with the latter boasting silvery tones.

FABULOUS FERNS

Ferns range widely in type, from tree ferns to ground covers. The soft fronds of the Maiden Hair Fern, which prefer to grow inside or in sheltered shaded areas outside, have long been popular.

For hanging plants, the Boston Fern is great as long as you provide enough light. Birds Nest Ferns are an Australian native and produce a beautiful rosette of green leaves, adding a sculptural element to your indoor garden or courtyard. For something a bit different, don’t forget Elkhorns and Staghorns which grow on walls and can be hung like a painting on a board; these will give height and interest to your display.

FANTASTIC FOLIAGE

Imagine a purple-leafed Philodendron climbing up a totem. Or how about some Devil’s Ivy railing down a bookshelf. Plus you can’t go past Cordylines adding splashes of colour to your living space. You don’t have to rely on flowers for colour. Think silvery Prayer Plants, white speckled peace lilies and the

gorgeous colours you can get from large, leafed rubber plants.

The Green Team at Gro Urban Oasis will help you create your own urban oasis with the right plants for your home.

time Summer in the garden

Summer is a great time to get outside and spend time with family and friends in your garden. The sun is shining, and with more time spent outdoors, it’s easy to keep your plants thriving. But if you want your green space to thrive this Summer, check out these tips from the team at Harvest Native Nursery.

One can still plant out the garden in Summer as it only needs a good soak when you plant. Then keep wateringevery four days for about three weeks (depending on the time of year and rain patterns).

At Harvest Nursery, we have lots of beautiful Australian natives that naturally cope extremely well with the hot weather. Always chat to your plant expert about what will work well in your garden.

Many people will water their garden late in the afternoon or when they get home from work, but the best time to do this is actually in the morning. If you do get the hose out in the evening, make sure you give your green space time to dry out before sunset.

And one of our favourite things to talk about in Summer is mulch which, believe us, will be your best friend during our hot seasons.

MULCH IS YOUR MATE

Mulch provides a blanket for your plants to avoid cold, heat, weeds and assists with moisture retention by reducing evaporation. It also provides shelter for animalia and insects. These little critters like to answer the call of nature where there is mulch; therefore, their bathroom habits will feed your plants.

It is best to use leafy, not too barky mulch to a depth of about 50mm. Bark may take nitrogen out of the soil to help it break down. This is not ideal, but what you really want is the nitrogen to stay in the soil for plant nutrition.

And here’s our best rule of thumb, green or not - if the soil is dry about 50mm down (thumb length), water your plant. Remember to water thoroughly or not at all. You do not want the roots to be teased to grow to the surface which will happen if you only water lightly.

Also, ants love the dry area at the base of the plant if you only water lightly. This isn’t a problem if the plant is in the ground, but it is a big problem if the plant is in a pot.

Most natives would appreciate a modest amount of fertiliser. Please make sure that you choose a quality brand that is suitable for natives. Aim to use a slow release fertiliser however, for a quick nutrient boost liquid fertilisers are also excellent. Ensure you follow the instructions on the pack.

Prune the shrubs every six months or so if need be. The aim is to have happy, bushy plants, not leggy and scrappy ones. Nip the tops of the bush often, like a possum, to keep the plant bushy or cut back by one third, like a wallaby, if the plant has become leggy.

We hope that these handy hints will help you all enjoy your time in the garden. Not only will you see the results of your labour in the plants but also the animalia and insects will have a safe space to live and thrive. •

Make yourself AT HOME

In a market riddled with fear and fortune telling, founded property advice is priceless. We caught up with Fiona Landreth, Northern Beaches' most trusted Buyer's Advocate and Property Life Coach. With almost 20 years experience under her belt, she is an excellent resource that could save you more than money.

What is your advice regarding the current hysteria surrounding interest rates? My view is that we should stop the hysteria concerning unbalanced property and interest rate markets. Despite house prices on the Northern Beaches falling between 15-20 percent since the Reserve Bank started its latest round of rate rises, most homeowners are sitting on huge tax-free gains over the past decade. Interest rates are coming off very low settings, and even if all the predicted rate rises come through, it will only get us back to where we were pre-pandemic.

As soon as consumer confidence picks up and it will, once people realise that inflation has peaked and that further increases in interest rates are unnecessary, we will see a shift in the market as buyers re-enter the market and vendors feel comfortable putting their properties up for sale. Prices will slowly pick up and the media will start telling good news stories rather than chasing headlines with scare tactics.

While it may feel counter intuitive to buy in a correcting market, history has repeatedly proven it to be a safe time to invest.

Are there any hidden gems or untapped areas left in the Northern Beaches? There certainly are ‘hidden gems’ and great buying opportunities popping up!

I’ve recently seen more properties being sold ‘off-market,’ which means they are not advertised on the Internet or in newspapers. Many of these properties are in areas with good growth prospects, such as Frenchs Forest.

The suburb has solid growth prospects due to the finalisation of The Frenchs Forest 2041 Place Strategy, which is a 20-year plan consisting of a new town centre, high school, 2,000 dwellings and a superior transportation network. The emerging health and education precinct is set to create 2,000 new jobs in the area. Construction on some of these projects should begin next year and other parts closer to 2025.

How do you help manage your client's expectations from their budget? It is important for homebuyers to be realistic about their expectations. We work with our clients to develop a tailored property brief that ensures their wish-list and must-haves are properly profiled before beginning the search. Once we have a clear understanding of what our clients need from a home, we can begin searching for properties within their budget that fit all of their criteria.

There is so much talk about when it is ‘a good time to sell’. Is there such a thing? There really is no right time to sell. It comes down to your individual circumstances, the type of property you have and the local market conditions. The property market moves in a cycle - prices rise, fall, stabilise and then rise again and so on. Understanding what stage of the property cycle your suburb is in can help you determine if it is a good time to sell your property. Though the market may seem uncertain, remember that it’s all relative and the market does not stop. There will always be homes listed and buyers out there looking to purchase a home. Additionally, upgrading your home in this current market can be

beneficial because you might get a little less for your current property, but you’ll save even more on the more extensive property you’re buying. No matter what condition your local property market is in, it’s crucial that you do your research and know what properties are selling for and what demand is currently like for homes similar to yours. Also consider if you are sitting on your heels waiting for market conditions to change, you run the risk of missing out on your dream home.

What does it mean to sell a property ‘off-market’? Off-market transactions are a method of sale that have benefits for both buyers and sellers. For vendors, it provides the ability to sell quickly, avoid a long sales cycle, and invest in less expensive advertising. Off-market transactions may also allow sellers to maintain their privacy by avoiding sticky-beak neighbours and unqualified buyers traipsing through their property. For buyers, off-market transactions can provide a more intimate experience with fewer competitors while still providing suitable options.

If you are thinking of selling, buying or investing, give Fiona a call for expert advice and access to off-market opportunities. •

SAM AYLIFFE  ASTUTE MANLY

With interest rates increasing, existing borrowers are now facing problems on several fronts. While this can be a worrying time, there are options out there, and it’s never been a better time to act.

SITUATION 1

Those on a variable rate are now finding that month after month their repayments are increasing. Now could be a good time to consider refinancing your loans. You can try and do this yourself by approaching lenders one-by-one and await a response. Or, you could trawl the Internet for what you think is the 'best' deal, and go from there. But, there are traps like fees, loans features and lending restrictions. It can also be a time consuming exercise trying to figure out what suits you and what the banks will even allow you to use.

For existing borrowers, your best bet is to get in touch with a high-quality brokerage, like the team at Astute Manly. They have close relationships with the lenders and access to hundreds of products across dozens of lenders – with the goal of saving you time and money. They have access to technology that can search products and lenders, and once they’ve narrowed down options, they can approach a lender directly and negotiate the deal for you.

Sam and his team could even check the valuation of your property. If it has been years since this has been done and your property has appreciated in value, you may find a better deal is available for

you. Also, as they are legally obligated to act in your best interests, if they cannot secure a better option, they will tell you straight up.

SITUATION 2

Those on a fixed rate may be paying as little as 2%. However when the rate expires, there may be a very large increase in repayments as rates revert to over 4%.

For many Australians, the fixed rate period is due to expire in the next 6-12 months. And, when your low fixed rate expires, you’re almost guaranteed to be paying a lot more.

The key here is to act early! If your rate is expiring soon, it’s time to look at reviewing your home loan and preparing yourself well before the fixed rate period ends.

Similar to a variable rate borrower, you could look at options like refixing your home loan, switching to variable, or splitting your home loan. The team at Astute Manly can help with all of this.

Remember, the whole process is obligation free – so why not give it a shot?

It is important to remember that when you are looking for a new loan, refinancing, or your fixed-rate mortgage is due for renewal, it is time to contact a reliable mortgage broker who can help find the best solution for you. •

Dreaming of a Tree Change?

Adam Marsden is a Buyer’s Advocate and Director of Earth Property Buyers Agents in the Southern Highlands, NSW. If you’ve been dreaming of a tree change, Adam’s got helpful hints and insights to help make your dreams a reality.

Take a short 1.5 hour drive south of Sydney, and you’ll find the stunning Southern Highlands. It's a region renowned for its beautiful views, fresh air, great schools, wineries, fresh produce, arts, restaurants, cafes, history, gardens, antique stores, boutiques and more.

From Mittagong and Bowral to Moss Vale, Robertson, Kangaroo Valley, Exeter and Bundanoon, these luscious lands offer something for everyone.

If this sounds like the escape you’ve been dreaming of but you’re not sure where to start, read on for Adam’s insights.

We know a lot of people who dream about buying a little weekender in the country. What’s the best way to do this if you’re time poor and living in Sydney? Be super clear on your budget and property brief - land size, house specs, general location and must-haves. That way, we can narrow down properties that best meet your needs.

At Earth Property Buyers Agents, we inspect properties on your behalf and give you honest and reliable feedback based on our own market research and nuances of the market cycles. We will provide a shortlist on the most suitable properties for you to inspect, saving you time and giving you confidence in the buying process.

Real Estate has been going crazy for some time now, but interest rate hikes have slammed the brakes on. How do you know if you’re getting a good deal when you’re buying in the county?

Interest rate rises have slowed things down in terms of days on market in

the area, especially up to the $2-3 million mark. If you are finance ready, this buyer's market means you could purchase a property with less competition for a much fairer price.

How much does it cost for you to find, negotiate and secure a property? And how many properties do you usually find that fit the brief?

There is an initial engagement fee to start the process of property search, inspection and evaluation, with a success fee paid when we secure your property. We aim to bring as many properties that are available on the market that fit your budget and brief, but ensure we shortlist these on your behalf so we are presenting only the most suitable options. The clarity and detail of your brief will offer the best opportunities to find your dream property.

Some people are nervous when it comes to auctions. How’s that best handled and are you involved in that part of the process?

We do offer an auction bidding service. Auctions can be daunting and stressful. Having a buyer's agent on your side and representing you at auction means your budget is never stretched.

You won’t over pay, and you can enjoy the process. If you’re not prepared with your strategy, you could get overwhelmed and lose yourself on the day. We take that pressure off you by understanding the auctioneer’s tactics and keeping a cool head throughout.

What areas do you operate in and is there a hot spot right now?

We cover all of the Southern Highlands, Illawarra Region and South Coast (Batemans Bay to Moruya). Springtime brings a flurry of buyer activity, but come early-mid December and into January, things can slow a lot, which is a great time to buy to eliminate competing with too many other homebuyers.

Let’s talk budget. Say I’ve got $3 million to invest. What will that buy in the Southern Highlands?

That’s a budget that will get you great bang for your buck. Depending on your brief, you could get a small acreage, a little out of town, or a nice cottage on a quarter to half acre block within walking distance to Bowral or Mittagong town centres.

How does someone get started?

We offer an obligation-free discovery call to determine if and how we can assist. We provide you with valuable insights to help with your plans. Just book a call through the link below or scan the QR code to schedule a convenient time. •

A TRUSTED 'PLUMBER' IS FOR LIFE

TRUST! IT’S A GREY AREA WHEN IT COMES TO THE TRADE SERVICES GAME, AND YOUR BEST OPTION IS USUALLY TO ASK A MATE OR SIMPLY JUST TRY YOUR LUCK. JOHN VICKERY, PUBLISHER OF BEACHES COVERED. HAS RECENTLY FOUND A 'PEARL IN THE ROUGH'. READ ON.

Here’s the thing about tradies - they’re essentially a need, rather than a want. When you do need one, you’ll find yourself saying, “I don’t care what the cost is, just please get here now.” That’s until you get the bill.

I’ve gotten to know a lot of tradespeople. So, what do you need to know about the trades game, and who can you trust? Here's my advice.

On the Beaches, good tradies charge a standard rate of around $80- $120 an hour, whether it’s services and repairs or building fit-outs.

The good ones are worth it, but you need to know they can be trusted with three things: a. not lead you down a path of doing more than what’s needed b. show up on time, or even at all c. have experience to find solutions rather than digging up more problems

KINDNESS AND SERVICE

As luck would have it, I found a tradie for life in the Plumbing game, and he’s a Pearla! (excuse the pun).

Dave Purll - all 6 foot 4 inches of him - is an ex-local Rugby player, good looking rooster with an infectious smile. And he’s worth his weight in gold when it comes to personal service with no BS solutions.

Here’s a little story that has galvanised Dave and Pearla Plumbing as my trusted plumber for life.

A few weeks ago, I had a situation I needed to rectify fast. My Mum, who is in her 80’s, has a bedroom on the second level of her house - the bathroom is on the floor below. Several trips a night, up and down the stairs had me worried for too long. My conscience had run its course, and it was now time for action. The only issue, how can I get a tradie at this time of the year?

Here’s how the phone calls went: Plumber 1. Are you kidding? At least a month away mate.

Plumber 2. Sure. Send me an email and I’ll put it in the schedule… maybe early next year.

Plumber 3. Sure thing, John. How’s this afternoon at 3:45 pm?

I was shocked and relieved to say the least. I found out about Dave Purll, from Pearla Plumbing, through a Manly BNI Networking Group. This is what unfolded.

Dave showed up at 3:45pm. After one minute of pleasantries, we were into it.

"What needs sorting out John?" "Well Dave, I need a whole bathroom plumbed in upstairs ASAP. There’s a tricky structural issue, and I’m not sure if the sewer can connect."

Dave is a solutions man, and he didn’t muck around.

“Right! We can do this, and there is no need for that,” he said. “I can give you

my best man, and you can assist. It will take this long, and the rate is $100 per hour. I’ll organise materials with no add-ons as you’re a referral.”

I have dealt with lots of tradies over the years, and can honestly say I have never had a more no-BS, fast, solutions-based conversation with a quoted price and an objective-based completion timeframe. And on top of that, Dave was both kind and respectful to my Mum.

On Thursday at 7am, Corey, Dave’s best man, showed up on time. Dave followed with clear instructions and away we went.

Plumbing a tricky upstairs bathroom in under two days, cleaned up the work area and left the job with a flushing toilet for my mother all in under a week from the first phone call. Winning!

In my eyes, it is the old school sincere understanding and kindness while looking at the situation that makes a good business great.

If you want trust in a good trade, trust in Purlly from Pearla Plumbing. Give Dave a call on 0410 537 777 if you need a great plumber for life. •

In November 2021, Niccii took a second leap of faith and opened NASH + BANKS’ flagship bricks and mortar retail space in her hometown of Avalon. She wanted to offer her growing online customer base a place where they could touch and feel the products and really fall in love with them.

In designing and fitting out the Avalon store, Niccii collaborated with Interior Designer, Louise Walsh, to create a calming and inviting space, incorporating - wherever

possible - the same ethos to the fit-out that the brand was built on, prioritising sustainable materials, engaging local suppliers and ensuring minimal waste wherever possible.

Both the online store and the Avalon flagship offer a selection of high quality and unique accessories, clothing, homewares, sports equipment, gifts and so much more. We make beer. It’s pretty simple really. Hops, malt, water and yeastno nasties thrown in. Better for the people, better for the palate and better for the planet. Each of our beers is a limited edition and brewed in small batches at our brewery in Avalon. To help give back, we donate a percentage of our profit to Seabin. It’s a non-profit organisation dedicated to keeping coastal areas clean and pristine. So, raise your glass (or your tin) to things done simply and cleanly. It’s the only way we can get away with being dirtbags otherwise! Taproom open every Friday and Saturday from 4:00pm

THE HUNGRY GHOST

If you’re looking for a great place to stop in the morning, you don’t want to miss this hidden gem.

The Hungry Ghost, a local’s secret with a very Melbourne-esque laneway vibe, is known for it’s Single O coffee.

This hole-in-the-wall café’s ethos is small batch, hand-crafted, local, free-range and ethically sourced.

The menu covers hearty jaffles with locally baked sourdough to healthy granola, a whole food soul bowl, avocado on toast with house made dukkah and organic spelt banana bread with cultured butter. With cold pressed juice and locally fermented kombucha, this place won’t disappoint.

Styling, wardrobing, weddings, formal and gifting all put together with old fashion service and a local face. Whether it’s a super cool pair of swim shorts or a stylish dinner suit for that special occasion, and everything in between, we’ve got you covered. Exceptional service and product knowledge is also paramount in creating the perfect shop for men. Time is of the essence, and we want to ensure buying clothes and looking good doesn’t impact on what you really want to be doing.

Bespoke

Think of Natalie Marie Jewellery as stewards of love and conduits for connection.

Through their work, they have carved a space within some of life’s most intimate exchanges. In nervous questions, asked on bended knee. In memorials. In birthdays. In milestones. In moments of ‘just because’. Each time, from first encounter to final form, they have been the grateful recipients of your trust; distilling your love, elation, heartbreak, and sense of memory into physical landmarks and modern heirlooms.

Natalie Marie Jewellery was born out of a passion for the craft. At the core of what they do is a dedication to traditional, superior craftsmanship; a focus on sustainability and high-quality materials and a commitment to their own unique style.

They believe that jewellery is both art and an investment and as such, take pride in every piece created at NMJ. They make each piece to order –a conscious decision that allows them to minimise their footprint on the environment, creating the opportunity to connect with clients on a deeply personal level. Their clients and the part that they play in their story is at the heart of everything they do.

“Our aim is to provide a laid-back experience where all are welcome to share a coffee or a glass of champagne while browsing our collection and taking in the action of our busy jewellers at

work on the other side of the glass doors,” Natalie Fitch, Founder.

Natalie Marie Jewellery offers a non-traditional jewellery experience, creating a relaxed, comfortable, holistic approach with a focus on sentiment and connection. •

FUN FACT:

In 1920, AJ Small, a developer and businessman, bought land in Avalon and subdivided it, naming the place after King Arthur’s legendary Isle of Avalon. He established Palmgrove Park, planted Norfolk Island Pines along the beachfront, established a golf course, and envisioned Avalon as a retreat similar to King Arthur’s at Glastonbury. Years later in 2012, it was renamed Avalon Beach.
