Newcastle-based photographer Jessica Blacklow has been capturing everyday life. Renewed interest in photography came when she discovered the joy of capturing her beautiful local surroundings. Beaches COVERED. Publisher, John Vickery, spoke with this season’s Cover Artist to find out more. Hi Jessica. Your photography of Newcastle is beautiful. The cover pic looks amazing! Are you a Newy girl born and bred? Thanks so much. I grew up on the mid-north coast of NSW at a place called Delicate Nobby where my parents owned and operated a camping ground. After school, I studied and lived in Sydney and overseas before moving and settling in Newcastle. Newcastle is a pretty cool place with a diverse art scene. What inspires you about the area? There is such a great community spirit in Newcastle. I’m constantly overwhelmed by the kindness and support of locals. The creative energy here is alive and vibrant. There are a lot of independent galleries exhibiting local art. The Big Picture Fest is also returning to Newcastle again this year and will include a top line up of international and local contemporary street artists. Large scale street art towering over the city; it’s pretty cool. Where are your top picks for anyone visiting? Places to eat, things to do? Oh, there are so many to mention… Estabar for great coffee and a menu sourced from fresh local produce and by the ocean. Queens Wharf Brewery where you can watch the ships roll in with a lunch special and a schooner. CoastXP for whale watching tours. You can experience Newcastle with Newcastle Afoot, who run walking tours and local guided experiences. You can also learn to surf at Philippa Anderson’s Surf School. The places I love most in Newcastle are the Bogey Hole – a secret swimming spot, Merewether Ocean Baths and my favourite, Newcastle Ocean Baths, which is currently

getting a facelift. Newcastle’s Nobbys Lighthouse breakwall walk, the Hickson Street Lookout, and the Newcastle Memorial Walk are just a few of the many great walks in Newcastle. Beaches COVERED. Winter issue theme is SERENITY; a feeling that your work evokes. What do you do to chill out? I go to the ocean as it’s my happy place. I swim, only when it’s really warm, hang out and take photos. I love watching the world go by around water. You have an incredible eye for composition. How did you get into photography? I did photography at school and a little at college, but it wasn’t until I saw my beautiful local surrounds with a renewed and mature eye that I found such joy in capturing it. I love aerial photography as well since the textures and colours from above are mesmerising. You photograph a lot of water. What is it that draws you to it? I love the way I feel when I’m around water. I love watching the ocean. The force of a big swell or the calm on a still day. I love capturing people’s connections with water. Your ability to tell a story through a single image is mindblowing. What is it that makes you stop and reach for the camera? A beautiful light or angle with an interesting subject. The story is there; I just capture it. For most people, candid photos come out like a hot blurry mess. What is your secret to capturing people in their essence? A good lense. Timing and being in the right place at the right time. •

Stellie
PHOTO: JONOTHAN VAN DER KNAAP
23-year-old Adelaide singersongwriter, Stellie, returns to the spotlight with a bewitching new track ‘Violet Girl’. Layered with cinematic soundscapes of electronica, dark pop and punctuated by Stellie’s intense fiery lyrics, the sentiment behind the song is simple but weighty - a plea for a loved one not to stray. On the new single, Stellie says the inspiration came from Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’. “It’s that idea of not being able to compete with someone so beautiful, and just hoping they don’t come along and steal your lover. Originally, the lyric was going to be ‘Violent Girl’, but I thought that sounded just a bit too intense. Sonically, I wanted to match that

intensity and create a track so feverish and fiery, you have to listen over and over again to fully absorb every single sound. ‘Violet Girl’ could be anyone - anyone with a look so captivating they make heads turn,” says Stellie. Produced by global songwriter Alex Markwell (Elliphant, Kita Alexander) with mixing and mastering by Becki Whitton (Banoffee, G-Flip, Tash Sultana), the confessional track was recorded at The Aviary Studio in Melbourne. It follows Stellie’s singles ‘How Do We Look So Good’ (#1 on Shazam Discovery chart), ‘22 Pieces’ and ‘Bullet Through The Heart’ which all received high rotation on Triple J. “Just like most tracks I write with Alex Markwell, ‘Violet
Girl’ came together quite quickly and seamlessly. We wanted to push the sonic boundaries and make something a little more unconventional compared to my other songs. I think the word to best describe ‘Violet Girl’ is hectic. With layered synths, heavy bass and crunchy guitars, it becomes a symphony of emotional and heartfelt anger,” says Stellie. In 2019, Stellie was a Feature Artist on Triple J’s Unearthed and she released her selftitled debut EP in August last year to much acclaim from NME, Rolling Stones, Pilerats, Purple Sneakers and The Music. She is managed by UNIFIED (Tash Sultana, Vance Joy).

BLAK DOUGLAS
Archibald
WINNING
PAINTS The Colormaker Industries team was overjoyed when Blak Douglas’ portrait was announced as the Winner of the 2022 Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW.
Only a few months earlier, Blak Douglas had been at the Colormaker factory in Brookvale conducting a smoking ceremony to celebrate two years since Colormaker had gone solar. Douglas’ powerful portrait, Moby Dickens, features strong messages about climate change, paying homage to those who found themselves knee-deep in mud, physically, emotionally, mentally and financially after the recent Lismore floods. The Sydney based artist painted his good friend and fellow First Nations artist, Karla Dickens, depicting her in the midst of the floods that devastated the Lismore community. “It just so happened that I was there in Lismore immediately after the first deluge in February and saw the shock and horror on people’s faces,” he said. A keen environmentalist, Douglas’ ecological stance embraces the materials he uses in this art. He paints with sustainably manufactured PERMAPLASTIK paints. PERMAPLASTIK scenic paints are made by Colormaker Industries, using 100% renewable energy. Colormaker, located
in Brookvale, is a Northern Beaches business that is well-known for their enviro-conscious practices. “When I began painting, I consciously chose water-based paints as I felt them to be the least harmful to the environment. “I recall randomly stumbling upon the incredible colour range of PERMAPLASTIK at an inner city paint shop for the first time. Gobsmacked by the pigments, what allured me most was the strength of the ochre based range which ideally suited me as a First Nations artist. “Now that Colormaker Industries has committed their efforts toward solar powering the Sydney factory, I feel even more pride in being generously endorsed by this great local company,” Douglas said.
heritage. His win represents 20 years of risk taking, pursuing a dream and surrendering the comfort of normalised employment. “I’m elated to be the first NSW Koori artist to win with a portrait of a NSW Koori artist. It’s a historic win!” he said. Colormaker Industries’ Managing Director, David Stuart, commented, “We were thrilled for Adam when we heard the news. Not only because his immense artistic talent has finally been recognised, but also because he’s a lovely bloke who’s worked incredibly hard and is an incredible supporter of other artists and communities right across Australia. Colormaker is honoured to be associated with him, and we’re delighted that he chooses to use our paints.” •
The highly pigmented PERMAPLASTIK acrylic paints produce vivid colours, an intense ultramarine blue, brilliant ochres and browns, and rich yellows, purples, reds and oranges representative of Blak Douglas’ signature style. Blak Douglas (Adam Douglas Hill) is a contemporary artist with Dhungatti

The Big Chop Hi my name is Ruby Vickery, and I’m the Junior Journo for Beaches COVERED. Last month, I raised money for children in need by cutting my hair. Why? My hair will be made into a wig for kids who have had cancer. I did this because raising money is fun and rewarding! And, especially for charity that helps kids living with disability, chronic illness and disadvantage.
RAISING DONATIONS My goal was to reach $1,000 in donations for Variety - Hair for Heart. For this to happen I asked Mum, Dad, my Aunty and their friends to share my donation profile on Facebook and help me raise money. Bit by bit, donations came in and up until the day of my haircut, I passed my goal. I raised $1,123.
FINALLY, THE BIG CHOP The day had come for my hair to be cut. Katie, my Aunt’s friend and hairdresser, came to my home for the big chop. p Following the Variety Hair for Heart’s wig guidelines, she plaited my hair into four segments. With her scissors in hand, snip! There goes one plait. Snip, snip, there goes two. Then another and all was done. Four neatly plaited bunches of hair ready for my charity. Katie then styled my hair into a short bob. Voila! No more long hair! But wow! I achieved my goal. I took the chop and hopefully, I changed a life too.
Katie
THE DECISION I made the decision to grow my hair when we went into the COVID lockdown. By then, my hair was already halfway down my back. One day while looking on the Internet on how to cut my hair, I came across the website for Variety Hair for Heart. I had a lightbulb moment! I should keep on growing my hair and donate my hair for a wig to be made for kids with cancer.
my hairdresser
Mum and Dad suggested to me that I could also raise money for my charity and my hair donation.
WHO IS VARIETY HAIR WITH HEART? Hair with Heart is a program created by Variety, the Children’s Charity. Funds raised through Hair with Heart support Variety’s programs and grants for kids who are sick or have special needs. Variety provides wigs to children with medical conditions such as alopecia that cause hair loss, funds Summer camps where kids who have lost their hair due to medical conditions can socialise. It helps provide therapy to those suffering from hair loss issues.

We are back! After a difficult few months that kept our SES volunteers busy, a break in the rain appeared at just the right time for Manly and the Northern Beaches. From the exciting community events ranging from Aqua Rugby to the family-friendly PLAY MANLY festival, the WSL Surf Pro and TASTE, it has been a terrific rebound for our local community and small businesses.
I encourage you to get behind some upcoming events including the ‘Night at the Barracks’ which will see live performances activating the old North Head Barracks as well as the upcoming Manly Fun Run that helps raise money for many local charities. Nothing makes me happier than seeing our community doing well. This year marks 5 years for me having the privilege to serve the people of Manly in the State Parliament. As the state’s Environment Minister, I can say with great pride that many of our local community grassroots environmental programs are leading the state in terms of impact and innovation. As Environment Minister it was my great pleasure to ban single-use plastic bags in the state in June. It was an idea that has
18 // Beaches COVERED.
its roots in our community. In addition, we will ban single-use straws and cutlery across the state in November. Together, these types of plastics create 60% of rubbish found in our environment. I committed to ensuring that the former Manly Hospital was redeveloped with the community at its heart. I am thrilled to say that Australia’s first ever palliative care facility for young adults will open on the site of the former Hospital by the end of the year. This $19.5 million building has been a community driven project and something we can all be proud of.
REBUILDING OUR LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS AND TOURISM INDUSTRY During the Covid pandemic, I formed the emergency Tourism and local Economy Recovery Taskforce to provide support to our local business owners and help chart a course to recovery.
Today, that Taskforce has evolved into the not-for-profit tourism body Experience Manly. The entity recently secured more than $800,000 in support from the NSW Government to deliver the PLAY MANLY event. The opportunity for Manly and surrounding suburbs to reshape its tourism offering to reflect the reality of our more dynamic area will create more sustainable tourism and boost the local economy. As I have long said, we don’t necessarily need more visitors, we need them to spend more and stay a bit longer, especially during the cooler months. Experience Manly will continue to go from strength to strength.
NSW’S MASSIVE HEALTH INVESTMENT In the nation’s largest-ever health workforce boost, a record 10,148 full-

time staff will be recruited to hospitals and health services, like Brookvale Community Health Centre, across NSW over the next four years. This $4.5 billion investment will ensure there are strong levels of health staffing for our massive pipeline of health infrastructure projects. As part of this investment, 7,674 more workers will be recruited in the first year to help ease pressure on COVID-fatigued health staff and to fast-track more elective surgery for patients. This will ensure that health staff get the respite and back-up they need and that hospitals have new staff to deliver quality health care closer to home. The NSW Government will also provide a ‘thank you’ payment of $3,000 to employees in the NSW Health Service in recognition of their work on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The payment covers paramedics, midwives, cleaners and all other permanent staff employed by NSW Health.
• Local schools will benefit from $3 million on upgrading school crossings right across the Manly Electorate to keep children safe.
I’m sure you will agree that the health workforce went to extraordinary lengths during the pandemic and has earned the admiration and gratitude of the entire state.
• A $2.9 Million facelift for Manly Fire Station’s 100th Birthday.
In other great news, teachers, nurses, paramedics and other key workers will receive a record pay increase following the NSW Coalition Government Budget.
• $50,000 worth of grants for local sporting groups.
This means NSW frontline workers will experience some of the highest public sector wages growth in the country.
WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH SOME LOCAL PROJECTS? There’s no shortage of other exciting local projects underway. A snapshot of these include: • NORTH HEAD NATIONAL PARK UPGRADE. The multimillion dollar investment will open later this year. • THE MANLY WHARF 3 UPGRADE. Designs have been shared with the community and this will create wet weather cover and disability access to the Wharf. • THE OLD AQUARIUM SITE. The demolition of the Aquarium will be a great improvement and create open space on our harbour.
• $25,600 for local anti-littering projects.
In addition, we are building an additional 45 Domestic Violence shelters across the state, and I am campaigning to ensure we have one built on the Northern Beaches to support the work of the outstanding Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter. Thank you for the honour of serving you over the past 5 years. There’s more to do! Serving our community has been, and continues to be, a great honour. I’m looking forward to continuing to deliver great projects, support our local communities and make Manly and its surrounds the best place to live, work and raise a family in all of Australia. If there is anything I can do to help you, your friends or family, then don’t hesitate to get in touch. •

Inner stillness REDUCED STRESS It takes a community to raise a child, and a child’s development is best supported through consistent supportive relationships. Through collaborative programs within classes to different opportunities for students to engage across year levels in our buddy program, our students learn with, and are supported by each other. Likewise, a collective understanding between home and school helps to ensure there are no gaps for students and are supported at all stages.
A child needs to feel secure and loved in order to be confident in their own abilities and settled in how they fit into the wider world before they can excel academically. Through a focus on values, character development, regular philosophy lessons within an inclusive multi-faith setting, our students have the space to be their best selves. Our students are encouraged to think beyond their own immediate needs, towards their school, family, country and the wider world.

Politics mark Smith
Australia has just had what seems to be a very transformational federal election. With the final result on a two party preferred basis of 52-48 to the Labor party, the pre election polls were pretty spot on, and Anthony Albanese is now the 31st Prime Minister of Australia. What those figures don’t tell you, however, is that only 68.3% of voters gave their primary vote to the Labor party or the Coalition.

Congratulations must go to the two Northern Beaches Independents, Zali Steggall (who retained her seat with an increased margin), and to Dr Sophie Scamps, who won the seat of Mackellar from Liberal incumbent Jason Falinski. What now for these, and other Independents who won seats around Australia? I have heard arguments that the only reason they won is because they (for the most part) represent affluent areas of Sydney and Melbourne, and therefore their constituents can afford to be worried about climate change. I take this point as fair, but it must be said that former Prime Minister, Morrison obviously had a ‘problem’ with women in the electorate because that section of voters swung heavily towards the ‘teal’ Independents. Also, I think the issue regarding a federal corruption body (similar to ICAC in NSW) was a lot more important to people than the coalition thought. Now that the Labor party has won 77 seats and therefore a majority in their own right, how will this affect the power of the Independents and their ability to influence policy going forward? I believe the Labor party must listen to these newly elected members,
26 // Beaches COVERED.
or they risk falling into the same trap as the Liberals. But the government won’t need them to pass any legislation in the lower house, so it will be interesting to see how Albanese handles this. It could also mean that while the Independents’ power may not be as great as if it were a minority government, if Labor performs inadequately, then these new parliamentarians cannot be blamed, thus increasing their chances of re-election. I hope that our new representation in Federal Parliament can bring about useful change, but I do ask myself, just how much the Labor party cares about issues on the Northern Beaches? The Senate is where the Labor party will have to negotiate to pass its agenda, most notably with the Greens, who also had a strong showing. It shapes to be a very difficult term for the new PM; inflation rising higher than first thought, including petrol prices and grocery items. Interest rates are now on the march upwards. And now an energy crisis, with electricity prices expected to go through the roof. Even though it’s often said, “the worst day in government is better than the best day in opposition,” one wonders if this wasn’t a bad election to lose. With Peter Dutton the new opposition leader, the left side of politics are jumping up and down celebrating that the Liberals will never win with him in charge. They should take a moment to reflect that the last two Liberal leaders to win elections, and in landslides, were John Howard and Tony Abbott. If things get much worse here and abroad, Anthony Albanese could be in strife. •

The Evolution OF AUSTRALIAN MEDICINE
Mounties Care is introducing a new integrating health clinic. It will offer complementary treatment and assessment by experienced specialists, as well as a revolutionary approach to chronic pain and disease. Integrative medicine combines the best of evidence-based conventional medicine and complementary medicine to focus on the total health of a patient. While the concept of Integrative Medicine is not new, leading the way in this sector is a group of practitioners who are passionate about creating a new kind of medical centre and practicing a new kind of medicine. One which is truly patient centred, holistic and focused on a person’s total wellbeing.
32 // Harbord Diggers
Leading this team is Dr Penny Caldicott, founder of Mounties Group’s Invitation to Health and President of the Australasian Integrative Medicine Association (AIMA). “I pursued integrative medicine after being interested in the bigger picture through my medicine studies. Once working in the community, I started seeing lots of people suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome and sadly, at that time, other medical practitioners didn’t often
understand them or the challenges they faced. I really wanted to help so I started going to conferences in integrative medicine and learning about how we can better examine and help to modify all the influencers that have created the matrix in which a patient exists. In this way rather than only focusing on chronic disease management, we can work to prevent, stabilise and reverse chronic disease and see better outcomes for the overall health of our patients,” explained Dr Caldicott. “Our model of health clinic has demonstrated exceptional results in areas such as anxiety, depression, digestive problems, insomnia, allergies, diabetes and other chronic and inflammatory conditions,” continued Dr Caldicott. Mounties Group is expanding this model of care by opening a new integrative health hub on the Northern Beaches aptly named Mounties Care Integrative Health Clinic. “Our Central Coast clinic is often booked out weeks in advance as we try to maintain the demand for our services so we are delighted to expand to the Northern Beaches so we can share our approach with many more patients across Sydney,” added Dr Caldicott. The new Freshwater clinic will be the first of its kind in the local community and Dr Caldicott and her team are excited to
DR PENNY CALDICOTT
push the boundaries in shaping the role of a traditional doctor to rather focus on holistic health and wellbeing. “What unites integrative doctors is their unique approach to chronic disease and their commitment to working with the patient to achieve overall wellness. In the process, we’re scrutinising many therapies that were once considered alternative and are now gradually becoming mainstream, using them the same way we’d incorporate any other evidence-based medicine,” she explained. Up to 70% of the population in Australia and New Zealand use complementary medicine, often alongside their conventional healthcare. This integration is mostly patient-driven and ad hoc, with many patients self-selecting and not discussing the use of complementary medicines with their doctors.
YOUR HEALTH, OUR PURPOSE
“Part of what makes our approach to medicine special is the integrated team of practitioners who work here. Highly trained and experienced doctors, nurses, naturopaths, nutritionists and health coaches are all under one roof, collaborating for our patients. Often our skills are combined in consultations, enabling patients to benefit from our collective wisdom and experience,” she added. At a time when almost half of all Australians have at least one chronic disease, it’s safe to say there are a lot of things medicine still hasn’t figured out. Integrative healthcare, however, could prove to be one of these milestone moments that see medicine evolve and take a more innovative approach. “The old saying of treating the patient’s “body, mind, and spirit” can be regarded
as a feel-good phrase. But in fact, we have seen first-hand how they are intimately tied. Considering the way people think, feel, and live their everyday lives is of particular importance for treatment, prevention and overall good health. “We are so excited to share our vision and experience with a new group of integrative practitioners and more so with the local community of Sydney’s Northern Beaches,” concluded Dr Caldicott. For more information about the practitioner opportunities at Mounties Care’s new Integrative Health Clinic in Freshwater visit www.mountiescare.com. au/integrative-health-clinics. The clinic will be located within the Harbord Diggers precinct at Freshwater, opening in July 2022. •

°CRYO STAY YOUNG
Reduce Pain & Inflammation IN A FEW MINUTES
Since forever, we have reached for an ice pack when we hurt ourselves. Think of Cryotherapy as frozen peas for the whole body. The effect it has on inflammation is phenomenal. Beaches COVERED. caught up with Dimple from °CRYO Stay Young in Freshwater to find out more.
This lady knows her stuff. With a background in Chinese medicine, Dimple is an expert in Acupuncture, Cupping and Women’s Health. She has combined these practices with her passion for Cryotherapy to create an overall health experience like no other. She describes herself professionally as “helping our community live the healthiest version of themselves”, combining her expertise in Eastern medicine with advanced technology and innovation.
WHOLE BODY CRYOTHERAPY This is where the full body is exposed to temperatures ranging from -110°C to -140°C. You stand inside a rather futuristic looking pod and let the dry cold envelop you in a 3 minute icy cuddle. You can even choose your own playlist, ‘Icehouse’ springs to mind! “Your body goes into a ‘fight or flight’ response to the extreme cold. Blood rushes to protect the heart and vital organs during the treatment, and then fresh blood flows through the system after the treatment,” explains Dimple.
Dimple gave us a go! We can promise you, it is nowhere near as torturous as it sounds. Remarkably, it doesn’t feel uncomfortable. Instead you feel rejuvenated and energised. “Its a dry cold at sub-zero temperatures and for that reason, it penetrates deeper into muscle, tissues and bones compared to an ice bath or ice pack.” Three minutes later, you emerge from the chamber invigorated with a clear mind and a soothed body. The best 180 seconds you’ll ever spend. The treatment stimulates the autonomous nervous system producing a multitude of physical and mental health benefits. It gets deep into the muscles and bones as well as the skin. There is really no health issue that won’t benefit from whole body Cryo. The clinic has the only TGA approved cryotherapy chamber with a filter that makes the air 100% breathable. This allows for full submersion in the cold, head and all. “Full submersion allows stimulation to the vagus nerve, the main nerve in the parasympathetic nervous system. It controls specific functions such as digestion, heart rate and immune system,” I told you she knows her stuff!
Most of us suffer with some form of inflammation. It is the source of a myriad of health issues. Exposing your body to these sub-zero temperatures is an extremely effective way to reduce this problem. It lowers systemic inflammation that fuels joint pain and contributes to the risk of developing a cardiovascular condition. “We treat a lot of clients with arthritis through both our whole body cryo, and also our localised cryo, which allows focused application of cryogenically cooled air to specific parts of the body. OUTDOOR ART GALLERY In 2020, the city acted as a canvas for artists such as MITCH REVS, JORDAN LUCKY and ELLIE HANNON during BIG PICTURE FEST, a three day live painting event which left a lasting mark on Newcastle’s walls, streets and landmarks. The city will host this event again in 2022. Grab a free map from the visitors center for a self-guided tour of this bombastic street art. If time allows, catch a show at the opulent CIVIC THEATRE. The heritagelisted building radiates authentic 1920’s charm and hosts anything from stand-up to dance concerts.
Newcastle's creative boom was helped along by an initiative called Renew Newcastle, a project making underutilised spaces available for creatives. Its biggest success is the heritage listed THE STATION which has been reinvented as a community hub and art space; a must-see for art and architect appreciators alike. THE STATION has become host to a hive of creativity and craftsmanship including MAKE SPACE, a collective of local talented artisans creating unique one-off pieces and GALLERY QUBE, where photography and all things print are showcased. JACOB TARANAKI, an incredibly talented jeweller, also uses this as his creative space and shop. Round the corner, you’ll find EASEL ART SPACE, home to art installations, exhibitions and performances. •
The ARTIST’S CITY WAY is a self-guided walking trail taking art lovers on a tour of Newcastle through the eyes of artists that have lived and created here. breweries & DISTILLERIES
Newcastle is rivaling Brookie with its growing list of breweries and distilleries. From rustic family pump houses to shiny super brewers, Newcastle certainly knows how to blow the froth off a coldie.
FOGHORN BREWERY
MODUS MEREWETHER
EARP DISTILLING CO.
The trailblazer for Newcastle’s brewing movement is FOGHORN BREWERY in King Street. This art deco warehouse with exposed roof trusses houses a custom 1800 litre brewery. The beer goes directly from the tank to your glass; you can’t get much fresher than that! Based in an old abandoned building in the heart of the CBD, Brewer Shawn Sherlock realised his vision to create a craft beer from grain to glass under one roof. From there, FOGHORN was born and quickly became known for its experimental brews, creating everything from pumpkin ales to choc-cherry imperial stouts. Grab a schnitzel, a cold one and settle in.
MODUS in nearby Merewether is the new kid on the brewery block. Founders and owners, Grant and Jaz Wearin, followed their roots back to Newcastle to open this sexy 36 tap brewery seven years after the success of their original MODUS brewery in our own Mona Vale. The entire MODUS range is available at the brewery from lager to sours and includes their non-alcoholic NORT range. The choice here is insane and always changing! If beer isn’t your thing, there is a pretty extensive cocktail list and hearty elevated pub style menu to choose from. Great vibes and even better, beers.
From the tiles to the steelwork, there is nothing that the Earp family haven’t had a hand in creating in the diverse and forward thinking EARP DISTILLING CO. Brothers Michael, Richard and Andrew Earp have revolutionised distilling by replacing traditional copper stills with much more robust stainless steel. This rather talented family have created a plethora of spirits including Just Juniper Gin, Absinthe Minded, Cask Rum and Limoncello housed in a relaxed and stylish bar serving tapas style food. Gin Blending classes and guided tastings are available for those wanting to take their Gin-ology to the next level.

So much more than a salon The hottest luxury hairdresser and beauty salon is open for business in Narrabeen. Beaches COVERED. caught up with sisters Claudine Husband and Lara Batton from the iconic Cordony Hair - who are behind this exciting new project in the heart of the Northern Beaches.
With over 90 years in the business and four generations of stylists, Cordony Hair has become a Northern Beaches institution. One of the most respected and longstanding salons is about to take it to the next level by creating a one-stop beauty hub inside Illie Gifts and Homewares on Pittwater Road in Narrabeen. Sisters Lara Batton and Claudine Husband are excited to throw open the doors to their stylishly designed beauty and social destination in a collaboration with Illie gifts and homewares Simone from Illie Gifts and Homewares and the talented Cordony crew will be sharing the space on Pittwater Road to combine the loved coffee shop with the cutting-edge new salon. This
exciting new multi-faceted space will have a tastefully curated selection of Illie homewares for sale alongside fresh flowers and the famous Illie toasties available to order at your salon chair. “Rest assured, Illie coffee shop isn’t going anywhere. The café will remain open inside the newly decked out salon and Simone and her team will be there to make you a coffee and a bite to eat with or without your foils in,” says Lara.
Lara was brimming with excitement about the design of the stunning new salon. “We were hoping to achieve a feel of sophisticated coastal luxe by using
timber features and the cool tones of natural stone.” They have nailed it. Effortlessly cool and incredibly inviting, it is the perfect place to get pampered by the amazing Cordony Tribe. “We are super excited about the new refreshment station where we can pour clients a glass of bubbles, while getting their hair done, so they can see the weekend in. We are hoping to introduce appearances by local musos and DJs.” Upstairs, you’ll find a tranquil beauty treatment room headed by the wonderful Earth Angel Beauty. Their treatments specialise in relaxation with a holistic approach to beauty and wellbeing.

Clients can enjoy traditional beauty treatments like lash lift, wax, mani, pedi or delve into a spiritual reiki and crystal healing to nurture spiritual well-being. “We dreamed of a business that incorporated more than a salon.”
CUTTING IT SINCE 1928 The sisters are particularly proud of their special and rich history in Australian hairdressing.
“The iconic Kings Cross Coca-Cola sign once read ‘CORDONY BROTHERS’ thanks to my Grandfather John Cordony,” explains Lara.
52 // Beaches COVERED.
Pioneered by Grandfather John, who immigrated to Australia from Italy in 1920, and armed with an ambitious business mind plus three brothers Paris educated in the cutting edge hairdressing techniques and styles, he built the radical unisex Cordony enterprise.
understanding for the trade in its entirety has resulted in an incredible working environment. Its team of happy and loyal staff, Glenda, Katie, Amy, Alana and Natasha, have collectively clocked up an impressive 70 years of service at Cordony.
“Claudine’s daughter, Loulou, has just finished her apprenticeship, making her the fourth generation of Cordony’s to work in the salon. We are so proud of her. I’ve tried to bring my own kids into the business too, but they can’t be swayed! They have their own thing going on,” says Lara.
After 30 years, the Warringah Mall salon has closed its doors to make way for the new chapter. However, the Warriewood salon remains as usual with all its friendly staff.
“Work hard from the bottom up, be the first one there in the morning and the last one at night. And until you have swept up every last snippet of hair on tired legs can you truly learn how the business works.” This was Lara and Claudine’s father’s advice which proved to be invaluable, creating the ethical backbone for the Cordony name. Their respect and
“Belinda and the team will still be there to greet our clients who prefer the convenience of a mall based salon.”
HOW SUSTAINABLE THIS SALON RECYCLES 95% OF WASTE • All plastics are collected, cleaned and upcycled into new products.
GREEN HAIR The new Cordony Hair is proud to announce that it has teamed up with Sustainable Salons, an incredible social enterprise dedicated to helping salons recycle a massive 95% of all waste. “It is unbelievable how many ways this incredible company have concocted to divert waste from landfill. We are so proud to be a part of it.” Sustainable Salons help participating salons to recycle plastics, chemicals, hair and metals.
“Our used foils are sold for recycling and the money is donated to OzHarvest. It is an amazing feeling when you look into a bin filled with hundreds of foils and know that they are going to feed the hungry!”
The hair itself in collected and put to use either to make wigs for cancer and alopecia sufferers. Perhaps the most impressive and innovative approach is the snippets of hair that are stuffed into stockings and used to clear up oil slicks in the ocean! “We will be asking our beautiful clients to donate $3, less than a cup of coffee, to ensure that everything used to make them look beautiful can be used to help the environment and those in need.” Book yourself in for some pampering or just pop in for a coffee and check out the new space. Lara, Claudine and the team would love to see you there. Good luck on this amazing next chapter from the Beaches COVERED. team! •
• All salon metals (including foil) and paper are sold for recycling, and the proceeds are donated to OzHarvest and KiwiHarvest to provide meals for hungry people. • Hair is collected from the salon floor and stuffed into stockings to make Hair Booms that can one day help clean up oil spills along our coastlines. • All collected ponytails 20cm or longer are distributed to charitable organisations to create wigs for those suffering from cancer or alopecia. • Chemicals are collected, pooled and sent to chemical recycling plants where they’re neutralised and turned into recycled water. • Select disposable hygiene products used during treatments are pulled apart and the materials are sent for repurposing.

BMW ROADTEST
ELECTRIC DREAMS
BMW’S IX3 TICKS ALL THE BOXES.
BY JON THOMSON
BMW IS A FASCINATING CAR COMPANY THAT HAS BEEN ABLE TO POSITION ITSELF IN THE LUXURY CAR REALM, FROM SMALL SPORTY HATCHES ALL THE WAY UP TO SUPERCARS AND LUXURY LIMOS.
The Bavarian manufacturer has also been able to successfully embrace the ever growing SUV market and also the brave new world of electric drivelines with some degree of aplomb and Germanic mastery. Beaches COVERED. had the chance to drive a new Bimmer recently, that not
only addresses the demand for small urban SUVs, but also the burgeoning demand for electric zero emission cars.
The question everyone asks with an electric car is, how far can it travel on a charge and what’s it go like?
Despite its price tag of around $115,000, the iX3 is surprisingly more affordable than similar electric SUV models from rivals Benz with its EQ and Audi’s e-tron, which are respectively around $10,000 and $35,000 more expensive than the iX3.
The range is impressive with a claimed 440 kilometres on a full charge, thanks to an electric consumption rate of 21.6kWh/100km in Australian specification. Given that the average Aussie car does about 260km per week, most people will be able to use the iX3 all week in urban situations without plugging in. With 440km of range, it would also enable most to travel to Melbourne with just one recharge around mid-way.
This makes the BMW iX3 one of the more affordable luxury electric SUVs on the market. Clearly there are less expensive electric cars, but the fact that this Bimmer looks pretty much the same as the conventional version and wears that iconic BMW badge adds to its allure with buyers.
60 // Beaches COVERED.

rear axle fed by an 80kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
steering wheel with an impressive dash and switch gear that feels just right.
When it comes to off the line performance, the iX3 delivers 0 to 100km/h acceleration in just 6.8 seconds, which is impressive for an SUV.
Sitting in the electrically adjustable driver’s seat, you look directly at the dual 12.3-inch displays running BMW OS7.0 which is easy to use and boasts wireless Apple CarPlay.
Of course with an electric vehicle, another factor is how fast they can be recharged. BMW has made the iX3 compatible with single-phase AC charging at up to 7.4kW as well as threephase charging at up to 11kW. Plug the iX3 into a DC fast-charging station at a rate of up to 150kW, and the batteries can be taken from 10 to 80 percent charge in around 32-minutes, while a 10-minute charge can add 100km of driving range. BMW also gives five years of free charging on the Chargefox national charging network. The power delivery of the iX3 is smooth, torquey and refined, but unlike other silent electric cars, which can be a little boring and uninspiring at times, the iX3 also delivers synthesised engine noise through the speakers into the cabin, which BMW calls ‘Iconic Sounds Electric’. It delivers a number of different sounds, which play at different intensities depending on driver preferences, throttle position, and other inputs. Climb into the driver’s seat, and you sit behind the chunky BMW M leather
Superb audio performance comes from a 464W 16-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system as standard, delivering superb sound that will have you bopping along without the burble of an engine in the background. In the rear seats, there is plenty of room for two adults or three at a pinch. There are also air conditioning controls, map pockets, a fold-down centre armrest with cupholders, USB-C charge ports, and large door bins with bottle holders. Open the rear hatch and you have access to a substantial 510 litres of load space, which can be expanded to around 1560 litres if you fold down rear seats. The BMW iX3 is one of the most convincing electric vehicles based on an existing combustion-powered model. If you’re nervous about going electric and want something that looks and feels, ‘normal’ if you like, this is one for the shortlist.
Where a lot of standalone or dedicated EV models can feel a bit ‘different’, the iX3 offers a familiar look and feel in all respects except its electric power. In terms of handling and performance, the iX3 always feels assured and is never clunky or dull with its floor-mounted battery pack giving it a very low centre of gravity. It gives the driver a great feel with communicative and fluid controls, ensuring an engaging experience. It’s no sports car, but it is streets ahead of other electric cars we have driven. There is plenty of safety tech; its lane keep assist and lane warning work particularly well, while the centre screen shows the lanes and vehicles around you. It also has blind-spot and rear cross-traffic assistance coupled with its already very good outward visibility and surround cameras. This ensures drivers are wellaware of everything around them. Like all BMW models, the iX3 is covered by a three-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty, while the battery is also covered for eight years or 160,000km – whichever comes first. The iX3 is one of the most surprising and engaging electric cars we have driven. When it comes to electric SUVs, it ticks all the boxes, particularly when it comes to price. •

PLANTS
Plants
for every living space
Greenery creates a sense of calm and tranquillity, while many plants also remove toxins from the atmosphere. It’s easier to look after large potted plants as they have more established roots and can be a little more forgiving than small pots. The simple addition of herbs in the kitchen window adds flavour to your food and fragrance to the room. Always choose the right plant for the position, matching light conditions, air conditioning or fresh air environments and your watering regime to ensure the success of your inner urban jungle.
LIVING ROOM This generally is the largest and brightest room where you can have fun and make a statement. Plants like palms, fiddle leaf figs, rubber trees, happy plants and dracaenas are good choices. If you have display shelving, break it up with some trailing plants – heart leaf philodendron or Devil’s ivy are great for foliage, form and their air cleaning properties. For a bespoke touch, add a kokedama ball either hanging or in a tray on your coffee table.
BATHROOM
OFFICE
Humidity and bathrooms often go together, but so too do low light situations. Go for a large-leafed plant that makes the most of its chlorophyll and can capture light well. Something like a philodendron is ideal. They come in climbing and non-climbing forms, variegated leaf types and all have a drip point at the end of each leaf, so they can quickly shed any excess water should things really steam up in there. Peace lilies are also wonderful, and even ribbon plant grows well.
Working from home has become the norm, so SOHO styling should always include plants. Not only do they look great, but they are also good for concentration. Try something hardy, like Sansevieria or Monstera to start with, and when your confidence builds then go for something like a Flamingo Flower to add colour.
BEDROOM All of us want sweet dreams, so try growing a perfumed plant like Stephanotis, a white perfumed creeper, or hoya, which have intoxicating pale pink flowers and look great trailing down a bedroom shelf. Alternatively, use a flowering plant, like an orchid, so that the first thing you see in the morning brings you joy.
BALCONY Screening is essential for creating private spots on your balcony. Clustering trios of different sized pots in groupings can be effective, and so can mass planting in a trough or row of pots the same. Plant choice will vary depending on the amount of sun you get, but if your balcony is windy, make sure you water regularly as this can be very drying. The giant Bird of Paradise is a good choice for most positions, as are Draceanas. •

Seeking Serenity My name is Jill Healy-Quintard of Body and Balance Fitness and Wellness Australia. I have 40 years Fitness and Wellness Industry. My mantra is total MindBody Balance. I will be seeking my own serenity while following my passion for adventure during 6-months of VanLife with my husband around Australia exploring amazing places and meeting people along the way. In this time my wish is to seek and meet inspirational women and write about my journey as I travel around Australia. Join my live-streamed classes Zoomed from town, country and desert.
JOIN ME IN TEN POSITIVE WAYS TO GAIN SERENITY. CHECK YOUR THOUGHTS As we are living in a chaotic world, we cannot control everything that is occurring around us. Thinking more positive thoughts on a higher vibrational level keeps our immune system boosted. It all begins with your thoughts. You really are what you think!
TURN OFF NEGATIVITY AND UNPLUG SCREENS AND DEVICES You might be surprised to learn that even powered down electronics suck your own personal energy. This is called VAMPIRE POWER. Turn off the news; nightly news flood our minds with chaos and disturbing thoughts which in turn means poor sleeping. The simple solution is to leave your electronics unplugged at all times, unless you’re actually using them.
START YOUR OWN GRATITUDE JOURNAL This is a very easy way to achieve peace of mind. Find a space you feel relaxed and comfortable in and make a daily list of uplifting, joyful moments and congratulate yourself on your positive achievements.
DRIVE LESS, WALK MORE Choose to walk, ride a bike or take the bus. Leave the car at home use less petrol and put less fumes into
the environment. You will also increase your fitness level.
10-minutes or longer YogaNidra with Chakra Balance.
GROW YOUR OWN FOOD AND EAT LOCAL
PRACTICE CREATIVE VISUALISATIONS
If you have just a small patch of garden or a bigger piece of land, try growing some herbs, salad, vegetables and more if possible.
Create scenarios in your mind that you wish to see happen. Feel what it is like and see it happening and release to the universe.
If eating out, make sure it is local and has in-season produce. A general rule for where something is grown is the closer to you, the better.
It is important to declutter your home and the environment around you. You will feel calmer and clearer.

WOMEN’S WELLNESS
A sanctuary of support Lauren Goldsack from Beaches COVERED. made her way to Holixir, Balgowlah’s new health destination. We checked out the new space, tried a class and chatted with Founder, Danielle Nicks, about her sanctuary where women can find health within their bodies, minds and communities. It would be hard to find someone more passionate about women’s health than Danielle. Her unbound enthusiasm and can-do attitude have driven her to create Holixir, an oasis offering support to every aspect of women both physically and emotionally. Her unbridled ambition is infectious and the backbone of this positive movement in women’s health. ‘I believe in nurturing the whole person by creating a support system. We all have our own story and we need to be there to listen to each other’s.”
THE SPACE She has built a beautiful space in Roseberry Street, Balgowlah, with five private practitioner rooms, hot yoga room, private and group pilates rooms, two creches, a gym for HITT classes and multiple areas to relax and connect with other members. The serene colour palate with pastel tones and natural materials contribute to the highly Instagrammable, supportive cuddle that is Holixir. The sleek pilates studio runs classes all week offering reformer pilates, 68 // Wellness & Body
athletica, prenatal, barre, stretch and restore and yoga. For clients requiring specialist attention for rehabilitation or reformer newbies anxious about all the equipment, there is also a private room for one-on-one tuition. Upstairs is where the magic happens, housing a cohort of beauty, health and wellbeing specialists across five beautifully designed rooms accessible by appointment to all members.
A NETWORK OF PROFESSIONALS Like most new mums, Danielle found herself feeling unsupported after having her babies. She wanted to talk, exercise and learn, but she didn’t know where to start. She found herself traipsing around the city to a series of disjointed appointments with an array of practitioners. She vowed to create a place where women, whatever their stage in life, can freely tap into resources that they might not have even been aware of. She has created an army of allied experts all working together under the Holixir umbrella.
“Working from the same space allows the practitioners to cross communicate to tailor each member with the exact care they need. The exercise physiologist can talk with the physio and the pilates instructor to create a program full of support and progress for each individual.” Her impressive artillery of experts includes a skin therapist, exercise physiologist, massage therapist, psychotherapist, nutritionist, movement coach, midwives, lactation and sleep consultants, sound healers, kinesiologists, acupuncture and fertility specialists. It is a tribe of help that is always growing, and Danielle welcomes new skills to the army with open arms.
THE MILESTONES OF WOMANHOOD Danielle speaks so passionately about wanting to help build a community. She has targeted the three key hormonal milestones in a woman’s life, teenage years, pregnancy and menopause and have used them as the basis for her community programs.
to help new Mummas regain their physical strength and confidence.
THE DREADED MENOPAUSE “Let’s face it, it is coming for all of us!” When talking about menopause, Holixir has one key goal, to get women talking. Danielle is striving to break the taboo by running integrating women’s intimate pleasure products designed to eliminate conversational walls among women. Hormone specialists and nutritionists will also be on hand to guide through a time that doesn’t need to be suffered in silence. “There is power in vulnerability. You can’t live your whole life with just one story. I want to create options to feel and heal… and more!”
ALL WELCOME! TEENAGE YEARS Driven by her growing concern for young people and their mental health, she has embarked upon a Teen Empowerment program which is to be presented to schools. Young girls will be invited to Holixir where they will have access to counselors, life coaches, nutritionalists, psychologists and teen only exercise classes. “The growing cases in teenage suicide is a real concern and something that needs to be addressed. I want young girls to feel like they have a place to go.”
I’M PREGNANT, WHAT’S NEXT?
WORDS: LAUREN GOLDSACK / PHOTOGRAPHY: BEN SYMONS
“I was flooded with hormones and emotions, but I knew I had to do this.” Holixir provides a full range of pre- and post natal care in support of the complete journey from fertility to motherhood. They run a program called ‘I’m Pregnant, What’s Next? which guides women through the terrifying yet exciting journey of expecting.
This amazing space is open to all in whatever capacity you want to use it. Come along for the exercise classes, a massage, a workshop, to see a practitioner or just to sit and connect with other woman. I can’t recommend this place enough.
BEACHES COVERED. DOES PILATES (SORT OF!) Danielle invited me to join in with their popular Barre class, a hybrid of ballet and pilates. Despite being absolutely terrified, I threw on my leggings and gave it a go. LOVED IT! The girls in the class along with instructor, Emily, made me feel totally at ease. Nobody batted an eyelid at my unco ballet moves! I broke a sweat and seized up in the morning which means it must have worked. I’ll be back… As soon as I can walk again! Thanks for having me! •
“My experience at Holixir has been nothing but positive. Holixir offers an amazing range of exercise classes and treatments and the timetable is very accommodating to everyone. Each and every instructor has their own amazing style and expertise and no two classes are ever the same. They have all helped me so much in becoming stronger, both physically and mentally.” JULIE ZAMMIT

HOMEOPATHY
Beating the ear infection blues There are many parents and adults that have faced a winter of recurring ear infections, glue ear, or that unbearably painful earache just before bedtime. There is not a lot of serenity either when it comes to kids and earaches. Harbord Homeopathic Clinic has conducted a study of clients suffering from ear infections and glue ear. The clinic has built itself a bit of a reputation in successfully treating ear issues, especially in children, so it is interesting to see how the results of the study would reflect this.
How effective is it to treat a child with ear issues using Earmix plus a constitutional homeopathy remedy?
CHRONIC PAIN AND BEHAVIOUR When a child is in chronic pain and their ears are blocked, it is likely to have a far reaching effect far beyond just their ears. Behaviour, dietary preferences, sleep, development, language and social cues are all examples of what may be compromised. The child may be in a state of constant pressure and irritation within the ear canals as well as reduced hearing.
EARMIX (KALI MUR AND FERRUM PHOS)
RECURRENT EAR INFECTIONS AND HOMEOPATHY RESEARCH
Available from Harbord Homeopathic Clinic, Earmix is one of the weapons in the fight against gummed up Eustachian tubes. This is made up of a couple of tissue salts (Kali muriaticum 3x and Ferrum phosphoricum 3x), which when taken over a long term basis can help to drain the fluid from the middle ear, reduce inflammation and allow for the body to better fight the infections. Couple this with a constitutional homeopathy remedy to help with the specifics of the problem, and there is a powerful yet gentle means of helping to wipe out chronic ear issues, often for good.
The results of the Harbord Homeopathic Clinic’s study have been really quite exciting. Looking at the files of a number of children suffering from a round of acute ear infections, there were often no follow up appointments recorded on their files. After calling the parents of these children, the study discovered there had been no need for a followup since. In those cases, the ear infection resolved within 24-48 hours, and they had no further need to follow up. In some of these children, they had experienced recurrent ear infections for months and had often taken many rounds of antibiotics.
Overall, the statistics of this study show a complete and permanent resolution of ear complaints in 27% of the children in the study. A further 30% of children experienced a complete resolution of their symptoms with the need to return at a later date for issues that were once again resolved completely by the use of the remedies. Then there were the 27% who experienced an incomplete but satisfactory reduction in their symptoms to the point where a measure of relief was gained. It is interesting to note that many of these children were still eating daily. Adding these categories together gives us a whopping 84% effectiveness in resolving chronic and acute middle ear issues. The Aurum Project, Australia’s first natural medicine research charity, based in Brookvale, supported this glue ear study. Harbord Homeopathic Clinic can help you and your family cope with the colder months. A NATURAL APPROACH FOR ALL SPORTS
Let’s face it, there are plenty of electrolyte drinks out there. They all have their own strengths and weaknesses. However, a lot of them are loaded with sugar and don’t provide much nutritional benefit. But how do you know which one is right for you? Coach of Olympian and Paralympian athletes, Narelle Simpson, always wanted to make a product that not only tasted great but was also good for the body as well. How does taking a sports supplement benefit an active body? There are many benefits to taking our sports supplements including energy, hydration, gut health and muscle recovery. It helps replenish vital nutrients that your body needs to perform at its best in whatever sport or the busy lifestyle you have.
having a healthy gut affect overall health? People are becoming more aware of the importance of a healthy gut. Poor gut health has been known to affect sleep, and bad digestion causing indigestion and mood swings. A healthy gut means good health which goes hand in hand with a happy mind.
What does an electrolyte supplement offer compared to drinking water? Water and hydration are important. When you are working at high intensity, the body uses a lot of energy, and electrolytes help to replace lost vitamins and minerals. They help you recover faster so you can continue to either work at that intensity or rehydrate your body when under stress and assist in recovery. Both water and electrolyte are a great pairing.
How does NSE help with muscle recovery post-workout? Protein is made up of amino acids, which act like building blocks to the body, particularly when taken straight after exercise. We have worked hard to get the balance right so your body won’t get overloaded. NSE is also enriched with all the B vitamins and minerals that the whole family’s gut health can benefit from.
What is the difference between a prebiotic and a probiotic? What health benefits do each offer? Prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredients that create a reaction that helps the growth of good bacteria in the gut. Probiotics contain living bacteria that promote good gut bacteria which contribute to essential gut health. It is important to maintain a healthy balance of probiotics for a lower risk of allergies, stress levels and improvements in sleep, skin, mood and gut health. That is a lot of Pro’s! There is a lot of hype about gut health at the moment. How does
What is the importance of Low GI when supporting energy levels? We have all experienced a sugar rush or crash (particularly the kids!). Low GI is essential to stop the highs and lows that create an imbalance in sugar levels associated with processed and artificial foods. It helps the body maintain energy throughout exercise. Can NSE help rebuild energy levels following sickness? Can taking it regularly help prevent getting sick? There are a lot of factors that influence why we get sick. It’s important to do everything possible to stay fit and healthy. Taking supplements that may
provide vitamins and minerals and help good gut health is important along with having a good healthy diet. NSE has received great feedback from COVID and FLU sufferers who used NSE’s Energy+ and Nutrition+ for recovery and increased energy level and Nutrition+ at night which they said helped with their sleep, and gut health. Australian kids are very active. Are the products suitable for children? Yes, they are suitable for everyone from 6 years and above, so the whole family can use them. Natural Sports Energy products are now batched tested for all WADA banned substances and certified via certificates per batch. So whether you are an elite athlete or just like staying healthy, you know it’s safe. Taste is important, particularly with children. What flavours do the supplements come in and how do you take them? The flavours are 100% natural. Energy+ is a berry flavour and tastes a bit like Ribena. Nutrition+ is chocolate flavour which has been a huge hit with the kids and parents. Where can you purchase the products? All purchases are made online at www.naturalsportsenergy.com.au. You can pick it up from our Brookvale Swim Centre or have it delivered by Australia Post for a delivery fee. •

Pilates = Strength Alicia Grabowski has two thriving pilates studios in Freshwater and Newport where she offers bespoke sessions catering to a huge cross section of members ranging from 12-84 years old, proving that the bounds of pilates are limitless. The word ‘Pilates’ used to be synonymous with middle aged women. Words like ‘gentle’ were often used in its definition. Alicia talks to Beaches COVERED. about how her small classes allow her to tailor her instructions to suit each individual, making pilates whatever you want it to be. If you want to sweat, she can make that happen!
WORDS: LAUREN GOLDSACK / PHOTOGRAPHY: ALICIA PILATES
Strength is sexy and people are striving for powerful, defined and capable bodies. You don’t need to smash yourself in high impact activities to achieve this. Body resistance and weighted pilates can help you to achieve these goals in a low risk environment. In recent years, there has been a shift in attitude towards pilates with more and more men turning to it to build strength. Alicia believes that every person’s body can benefit from pilates, whether they are looking to rehabilitate, lengthen, strengthen or restore. Over half of her clients are men and that number is growing. “Men love the strength pilates where I load them up with weights,” says Alicia. Somewhere in their mid forties, men suddenly realise that their bodies no longer have the metabolism or speed that they used to. This epiphany usually dawns the first time their kid beats them in a race! Pilates is the perfect vehicle to gain
strength and increase mobility without compromising your skeletal health. “Shane Warne’s tragic death resonated with a lot of my male clients. It motivated them to turn themselves around and up their input. One amazing client lost 25kgs in a total transformation,” says Alicia. “I can tell as soon as a male client walks through the door what I need to fix. Gym guys are usually stiff. Surfers are all about the hips and for tradies, it is their backs,” laughs Alicia. The AP crew love the challenge of helping each client improve and watching their progression towards a healthier body and mind. “Helping woman get their body back after having babies or improving mobility to people in pain is the most rewarding part of the job,” beams Alicia. Her team of eight pilates instructors are all highly qualified in anatomy, physiology, rehabilitation and woman’s health but each have their particular strengths. Alicia deliberately pairs clients with the instructor that will be the best fit, ensuring the best outcome for all classes. The Alicia Pilates team understands that each client requires a different approach. Some need to feel nurtured and supported while others like to be challenged and
pushed, often it is a bit of both. The trainers at AP are experts in creating the perfect scenario for each individual. The classes will never get boring. They will have you bent over on all manners of interesting equipment including a Wunder Chair, a Reformer Cadi and Barrel. Each offers 25-36 different exercises allowing different muscles to be isolated and targeted. Classes and packages are designed to suit everyone offering before work early morning sessions, mums and bub classes and private sessions for those who really want to accelerate their progress. “We want to keep people moving as much as possible. As a bone surgeon once said to me, it’s vital to use your body everyday so you’ll have a long life.” Men, women, old and young all are welcome at either studio. In top secret news, Alicia let it slip that a third studio is in the pipeline… Watch this space! •

Fruit & Veg
FRESH AT THE GROWERS Every winter we stock up on fruit, vegetables and healthy snacks so we can stay feeling happy and energised. Our favourite local grocer Harbord Growers in Balgowlah has everything you need to keep healthy during winter.
NAVAL ORANGES
DATES
GRAPEFRUIT
LEEKS
It is the season of the orange. For its juicy esh and sweettart taste, navel oranges are one of the most popular family fruits. This seedless citrus can be used to make preserves or make a healthy snack at any time of the day. Now is the best time of the year to add a navel orange to the kid’s lunch box—or for an extra-special weekend breakfast treat!
Dates are one of the oldest fruits known to man, so it’s no surprise that they’re delicious and nutritious. They are soft and chewy with a caramel avour, perfect for adding sweetness and texture to your recipes. Our tip – throw a couple in your banana smoothie mix and you’ve created yourself the tastiest smoothie on the Beaches.
So, how does a single grapefruit compare to the rest of your breakfast? Well, it packs one hell of a nutritional punch. One of our favourite things about grapefruits is that they have only 54 calories. They are also excellent for your health - containing 2.2 grams of bre, Vitamin C and copper, potassium, and folate.
The Winter vegetable pick your kitchen needs is leeks. We love the sweet, oniony avour they add to soups, stews and pastas, as well as in a classic chicken pie. Sauté butter and herbs before mixing into deliciously sweet chicken thighs and mustard and chicken stock, this versatile vegetable is easy to cook without being boring.
CABBAGE
BRUSSELS SPROUTS
Cabbage is a member of the cruciferous family, which also includes broccoli, kale and brussels sprouts. Cabbage can help lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels, while bre can help regulate digestion. With all these good qualities, cabbage is denitely a super food! It can be prepared in many different ways – from simple slaws served in salads to delicious roasted wedges with golden potatoes, Italian-inspired lentils and rosemary drizzle.
You’ll want to make brussels sprouts part of your diet in the winter months. These little leafy green morsels are packed with nutrition and avour, and they’re easy to cook up. Well, Jamie Oliver thinks so. Just place them in a large saucepan over a high heat for a couple of minutes, then, once the pan is nice and hot, cover with boiling salted water. Boil for 5 minutes or until just tender but with a little bite. Spunk up your dish by throwing in some butter, streaky bacon, and some seasoning of salt and pepper. •

PRACTICAL FUNCTIONALITY It’s not just about looking good - it’s also about working with your lifestyle and meeting your family’s needs to create highly functional spaces.

“The best rooms have something to say about the people who live in them.” David Hicks
CREATING BEAUTIFUL HOMES FOR A BETTER LIFESTYLE.
$$$ SAVINGS I share trade discounts to save up to 20% off RRP, which often covers my fees for sourcing and procurement.
INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE I know what to buy and from where the prospect of searching the stores is too daunting for many clients to even contemplate.
COHESIVE INTERIOR SCHEME Sometimes a room just doesn’t feel ‘finished’ or the furniture doesn’t quite work together - an interior designer can see how to bring it all together to create a space that is a pleasure to spend time in.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERTISE I am a qualified interior designer. I live and breathe interiors and am constantly looking at new products, visiting showrooms and studying the
latest trends to enable me to include beautiful design features that will add real wow factor to an interior scheme.
3D VISUALS & BESPOKE MOOD BOARDS I use 3D visual software to communicate design concepts and to provide accurate drawings and documentation for use by joiners, builders and other trades. For a simple interior decorating project, I put together mood boards of suggested furniture to give a clear idea of how the room will look before any commitment to purchasing.
INCREASED VALUE FOR YOUR HOME Adding a professionally designed and installed feature such as an outdoor kitchen or custom media wall or fireplace will add value to a home both in terms of the property’s market value and the enjoyment that the home’s occupants take from it.
STRETCH THE COMFORT ZONE I help people find their design aesthetic and can steer them to try something new that complements their core design values.
TEDIOUS TASKS Building, renovating and decorating projects include a lot of unglamorous tasks. As a highly experienced project coordinator, I ensure all details are correct, keep track of deliveries and coordinate installations, and I deliver weekly client updates on budgets and progress. So, if you feel like a change but have no idea where to start, give me a call to arrange an obligation-free design consultation – with 10%* off when you quote BEACHESCOVERED. • (OFFER VALID UNTIL 01/11/22)

BATHROOM RENOVATION
NO MESS RENOVATIONS We’ve all heard horror stories, or worse, lived through the dust, dirt and chaos of a kitchen, bathroom or laundry renovation. But it doesn’t need to be that way. In fact, John Olsen from Collaroy Kitchen Centre believes there is no excuse for any trade to leave a client’s home dusty and dirty, even on demolition day.
A bathroom renovation can be incredibly exciting as you get to decide how your bathroom looks and feels. Getting the redesign right is absolutely paramount, but also a lot of hard work and stress. With this in mind, it is important that you take your time to select the right people to do the job for you. Remember that it isn’t just the materials and fittings you choose that will make your bathroom beautiful. It’s also down to the attention to detail in its design and functionality.
KNOW YOUR SPACE - THE BATHTUB When it comes to bathroom trends and décor, many people forget that not all bathrooms are the same and you may not be able to copy and paste what you see from the photos. For example, freestanding bathtubs have been the most popular style of bathtub in recent years, but not many people know that these baths need space and room to accompany them. There are many other bathtubs that look sleek and modern like freestanding baths, but they’re smaller, more compact, and fit up against the wall, all the while looking slightly freestanding from the front.
ORGANISING AND PRIORITISING PRACTICALITY FIRST Bathrooms, no matter how simple they may appear at first glance, are actually
full of small problems that arise once they are built. These little problems can cause discomfort or make the bathroom seem less than ideal. For example, a towel rack located immediately next to a toilet may not be bothersome for some people, but the majority of users may prefer not to have their shoulders covered by a hanging towel while using the bathroom. Simply moving the towel rack further away or on the opposite end of the room can help.
GET YOURSELF A PROFESSIONAL TO HELP Collaroy Kitchens takes care of every aspect of your bathroom renovation. We do everything from selecting the materials, designing and overseeing the construction, including hiring and managing builders and tradespeople, to installing and cleaning up after the renovation is finished.
“We approach renovations differently. We invest time in protecting the rest of your home, including installing plastic sheeting in doorways and other openings to contain the dust during demolition. To protect your existing flooring, the team will place durable substrate in the high traffic walkways,” says John. “Of course, clean drop sheets are used throughout and at the end of each work day, the renovation area is vacuumed. So even if you decide to move out during the renovation, your home will be treated with respect.” That’s why Collaroy Kitchen Centre clients often rave about how little mess their renovation caused. It’s the end result that counts! If you’re looking for truly bespoke design to your kitchen, bathroom or laundry, don’t hesitate to call the experts in the trade on (02) 9972 9300. •

SOLAR
A Green, Mean Solar Machine So you’ve bought your electric vehicle. Nice. Planet saved. Or is it? What about the electricity used to charge your EV? How do you keep your ‘green’ car ‘green’? There must be a better way than syphoning energy off the grid?
POWER IT WITH SUNSHINE It is a common misconception that EV chargers use solar power. Most suck it off the grid like water through a straw, thwarting your pure intentions. Solarpro talked to Beaches COVERED. about how you can charge your EV with solar power keeping it eco focused. “Most people are surprised when they find out that if they use a standard EV charger, their ‘green’ car will be charged from coal-based electricity even if solar power is available,” explained David.
WHAT IS AN EV SOLAR CHARGER? EV Chargers work by using the energy generated from your solar power system and using it to power your car. However, there are a lot of variables to consider. Solar can be slow to charge and your car will often drain your entire household supply.
This wall mounted solar inverter allows you to charge your car from the grid in conjunction with solar power. This really cool feature can maximise efficiency. Using a hybrid of solar and off-the-grid energy allows it to charge up to four times faster than other chargers. The beauty of this system is that you have full control over which energy you use. If you are in a hurry you can pull energy off the grid for a rapid charge. If time is not an issue you can ensure to slow charge your EV using only solar power. You can also program a charge schedule ensuring you only use off-peak energy. “We are selling a lot of these. It gives you full visibility of the energy that you are using,” explained David.
SOLAREDGE EV CHARGER AND INVERTER
Energy usage can be controlled and tracked from your phone. Using the SolarEdge app, you can remotely turn your EV charger off/on, track solar, EV and grid consumption, charging status and duration. This full visibility allows you to manage your overall household efficiency.
David told us about the SolarEdge EV Charger and Inverter. It is the world’s first EV charging inverter which charges with renewable and non-renewable energy.
EV solar chargers are relatively inexpensive, making the payback period
A LOGICAL INVESTMENT
short. On top of this they provide large returns, saving you money on charging stations or electricity from the grid. In theory, if you can rely on solar power to charge your EV, you can eliminate fuel costs completely, saving costs to both your pocket and the environment.
THINK AHEAD ‘We recommend that if you own an EV or think you are likely to in the future, you should install a SolarEdge Inverter and EV Charger now so that you are set up,” explained David. Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular. With government incentives available, it is likely that your next car will be electric. Solarpro recommends that you think ahead. If renovating, think about installing a Solar EV charger Inverter. It won’t be long before you need it. “We hear comments from our customers that they are setting themselves up now not just for their own vehicle but assuming their kids will have them as well,” said David. Head into the Solarpro showroom for more details about the EV Inverter or to discuss all things solar. •
