Tattoos are made up of thousands of ink particles suspended in your skin. Although your body recognizes this ink as a foreign substance, it is unable to remove it due to the large particle size. In tattoo removal, the laser applies concentrated energy with an incredibly fast pulse to specifically target that pigment. The shallowest layers of ink in the dermis absorb this energy and shatter into smaller pieces, which allows your immune system to flush it away over the following weeks.
