Mesteparten av jobben er gjort. De fleste planene er i boks, og løpet for ferien er lagt. Sett likevel av tid til å oppleve noe du ikke har på planen. Mange av av mine beste ferieminner kommer av opplevelser jeg ikke hadde forutsett. De kom av tips jeg fikk av andre reisende langs veien, informasjon jeg leste underveis og det jeg tilfeldigvis snublet over.

– Vi har gjester I 2003 ble Sokndal – en kommune med 3 300 innbyggere i det sørvestlige Norge – det første nordiske medlemmet av Cittaslow ‘slow city’. Den internasjonale bevegelsen har en snegl som symbol på unike steder med fred og ro. Ikke at Sokndal i utgangspunktet hadde et stort behov for å roe ned. Rushtiden varer ikke i mer enn et par minutter. Parkeringsreglene fremstår helst bare som forslag. En trafikkork involverer sannsynligvis sauer. Alle har tid til å slå av en prat.

– Det handler ikke bare om å roe ned, sier næringssjef og talsmann for Cittaslow i Sokndal, Nils Jacobsen.

Det handler om tid til å nyte livet, bygge lokal identitet, bruke lokale produkter og fremme bærekraftig utvikling.

– Og om å være gjestfri, legger han til.

– Vi har ikke turister. Vi har gjester.

Med beliggenhet langs den naturskjønne nordsjøveitraseen mellom Stavanger og Kristiansand består Sokndal av grender og det lille tettstedet Hauge i Dalane. En jevn strøm av begivenheter fyller gatene, inkludert Kjærlighedsvego, festivaler, billøp, sykkelritt og konserter.

To saker Sokndal er kjent for er: 1) Sogndalstrand – denne idylliske havnen fra 1700-tallet er en av de største attraksjonene i området. Her finner du hoteller, restauranter, kafeer, gallerier, butikker og parkbenker.

2) Tønes – den lokale sanger og tekstforfatteren Frank Tønnesen har oppnådd nasjonal stjernestatus med å skrive og synge på typisk Sokndal-dialekt om hverdagslige ting, som fluesmekkere.

There are a lot of park benches around here. Some are decorated with a snail or a saying, such as “Peace of Mind.”

It’s a philosophy. Slow down. Look around. Enjoy the good life.

Visitors are guests In 2003, Sokndal, a southwestern Norway municipality of about 3,300 people, became the first Nordic member of the Cittaslow ‘slow city’. The international movement has a snail as its symbol on unique places signalizing peace and quiet.

Not that Sokndal really needed to slow down in the first place.

Rush ‘hour’ here lasts minutes. Parking rules seem more like suggestions. A traffic jam probably involves sheep. Everyone makes time to chat. “It’s not just about slowing down,” said Nils Jacobsen, head of town development and Cittaslow spokesman. It’s about time to enjoy life, build a local identity, use local products and promote sustainable development.

“And being good hosts,” he adds. “We don’t have tourists. We have guests.”

Sokndal is made up of hamlets plus one small town, Hauge i Dalane on the scenic North Sea Road between Stavanger and Kristiansand. It holds a steady stream of events, including Love Week, festivals, auto and bike races and concerts.

Two things Sokndal is known for are: 1) Sogndalstrand – has an idyllic 18th Century port that is one of the region’s most popular tourist attractions, with a hotel, restaurant, café, general store, gallery and plenty of park benches.

2) Tønes – local singer-songwriter Frank Tønnesen – who somehow rose to national stardom by singing about everyday things like flyswatters in the obscure Sokndal dialect.

You often see him chatting outside the grocery store.

Fra forlatt til populært For noen og 20 år siden var de hvite trehusene på den steinete kanten av Nordsjøen fullstendig nedslitt. Eli Laupstad Omdal og mannen Jan Oddvar Omdal bestemte seg for å åpne en kafé i håp om å redde kulturskatten. I dag er kafeen blitt et hotell bestående av ti renoverte bygg som bidrar til å tiltrekke seg 65 000 gjester i året.

– Det fine er at du kan gjøre mye på et lite sted uten å måtte skynde deg.

Mye å oppleve i rolig tempo Sokndal hadde sett en gradvis nedgang i innbyggertall. En trend de ønsket å snu. Cittaslow ble en god måte å markedsføre området på.

Du drar ikke til Sokndal for liv og leven. Jacobsen lister mange andre grunner til å legge turen innom. Blant dem er nydelig natur, hyggelige mennesker, hav- og elvefiske, sykling, tennis, golf, svømming, båtturer, camping, fjellklatring og sjøsidehytter.

Pluss Ruggesteinen selvfølgelig – Nord-Europas største steinblokk på 74 tonn. I tillegg kan du besøke den forlatte jernmalmgruven fra 1700-tallet i Blåfjell.

From abandoned to popular Some 20 years ago, many of Sogndalstrand’s white, wooden houses on the rocky edge of the North Sea were badly run down. Eli Laupstad Omdal and husband Jan Oddvar Omdal opened a café there in a bid to save this treasure. Now their Sogndalstrand Culture Hotel has 10 restored buildings, helping draw 65,000 visitors a year.

Unikt sjø- og motormuseum Enda litt mer utenfor allfarvei finner du Nesvåg Sjø- og Motormuseum.

Dette ligger like bak en rekke værbitte naust i det idylliske innløpet til Nesvåg.

– Jeg tror jeg har 150 eller 160 motorer på utstilling, sier museumseier Johnny Nesvåg.

Mange av dem er utstilt ved siden av hvalfangstharpuner, svære sjøkompass og andre sjøgjenstander. Gjester på hans tråler elsker fisket og det fascinerende og ofte spennende havet, noe Nesvåg insisterer på er «det ekte Norge». På bryggen hans, blant eldgamle båtdeler, garn, tau, glass, flåter og motorer, stikker det frem et bevis på at landkrabber også er velkomne til å finne sjelero: nok en parkbenk med en snegl på.

Lots to explore without rushing At that time, Sokndal also needed to counter a population decline and Cittaslow was seen a good way to promote the area. You don’t come to Sokndal for the hustle and bustle. Jacobsen lists many other reasons to visit: beautiful scenery, friendly people, deep sea and river fishing, hiking, biking, tennis, golf, swimming, boating, camping, rock climbing, seaside cabins, and more. Plus, of course, Ruggesteinen, northern Europe’s largest rocking boulder at 74 tons, and the abandoned 1800s Blåfjell mine. “The nice thing,” he says, “is that you can do so a lot in such a small area without rushing.”

Unique sea and motor museum Farther off the beaten track is the Nesvåg Sea and Motor Museum, just beyond a row of weathered boathouses in the lovely Nesvåg inlet.

Owner Johnny Nesvåg says, “I think I have 150 or 160 motors,” many on display along with whaling harpoons, giant compasses and other sea artifacts. Guests on his trawler love the fishing and the enthralling, often thrilling sea, which Nesvåg insists is “the real Norway.”

However, there on his wharf, in the clutter of ancient boat parts, nets, ropes, glass floats and motors, is proof that landlubbers are also welcome to find peace of mind here: Another park bench with a snail.

Sverige er golf en sport i sterk vekst. Den varierte topografien sørger for fine golflandskap. Mens noen baner befinner seg i kupert kystterreng, er andre baner omgitt av skog og buktende bekker. Kvaliteten er høy og avstanden mellom banene relativt kort.

I 2007 åpnet Brof Hof, en av Europas beste golfbaner, utenfor Stockholm.

Det er imidlertid ikke nødvendig å sette kursen mot østkysten for å finne golf i verdensklasse. Både den vestlige og sørlige delen av Sverige huser golfbaner av topp kvalitet. Innenfor dette området finner du 140 baner.

Alene byr Skåne på halvparten av dem. Her er noen av de mest anerkjente.

Halmstad Bare halvannen time med bil sør for Gøteborg finner du en av Sveriges høyest rangerte golfbaner. Halmstad Golfklubb byr på to fantastiske skogsog parkbaner. Banen regnes for å være blant landets fem beste golfbaner.

Swinging in Sweden With legends like Annika Sörenstam and stars like Henrik Stenson, Sweden has won acclaim as a golf destination.

Halmstad Golf Club Only one-and-a-half hours by car south of Gothenburg is one of Sweden’s highest-ranked golfing Meccas. Halmstad Golf Club offers two wonderful forest and parkland courses. www.hgk.se Barsebäck Golf & Country Club The facility includes two 18-hole courses, a 9-hole short course and golf academy. Barsebäck is about a two-and-a-half hour drive south of Gothenburg. The website Top 100 Golf Courses has named it Sweden’s third best golf destination, and among the top 40 in Europe.

In Sweden, golf is a quickly growing sport. The varied topography makes for a fine golf landscape. Some courses feature hilly coastal terrain, while others are surrounded by forests and meandering streams. The quality is high and the distance between courses relatively short.

In 2007, golfers rejoiced at the opening of Bro Hof – one of Europe’s best golf courses, located outside Stockholm. But you don’t have to travel to the east coast to golf in a world-class setting. There is exceptional golfing in western and southern Sweden, too. This area has some 140 golf courses on offer – including 70 in Skåne County alone.

den gamle havnebyen Esbjerg er handlemulighetene store. Hit kommer reisende fra hele det sørlige Danmark for å besøke de mange butikkene og hyggelige gatene.

Med over 200 spesialforretninger, en av landets lengste gågater og en rekke kafeer og restauranter i løypen er byen ved Vadehavet et selvskrevet sted for shoppingglade.

Birgitta Christensen, leder for handelstanden i byen, forteller at besøkende bør peile seg inn på to gater i Esbjerg – Kongensgade og Torvegade.

– I gågaten Kongensgade ligger alle de kjente merkevarene, sammen med selvstendige butikker som er unike for Esbjerg. En god blanding, sier Christensen.

Nyrenoverte Kongensgade er en av Danmarks lengste gågater. Her finner du kjente merkevarer som Tiger, Vero Moda, Humac og Noa Noa. På tvers ligger Torvegade, med sine mindre og mer unike utsalg.

– Det er butikker der innehaveren selv står bak disken og gir personlig service. Her finner du alt fra spanske delikatesser til kaffe, te og ost, sier hun.

Gull i sidegaten En typisk esbjergsk spesialforretning finner vi en liten sidegate fra Kongensgade. Her holder gullsmed Henrik Nielsen til. I 25 år har han jobbet med edle metaller, og han tok over butikken etter sin mor i 2004.

Den hyggelige gullmannen har spesialisert seg på å lage juveler designet etter kundens ønsker.

Shopping all the way With one of Denmark’s longest pedestrian streets, Esbjerg is the shopping capital of southern Jutland.

In the old port city of Esbjerg the shopping opportunities are abundant. Travelers from all over southern Denmark come here to visit the many shops and cozy streets.

With over 200 specialty shops, one of the country’s longest pedestrian streets and numerous cafés and restaurants, this city on the Wadden Sea is a natural source of shopping pleasure.

Birgitta Christensen, who heads Esbjerg’s business community, says visitors should focus on two streets in the city – Kongensgade and Torvegade.

Han anbefaler turister å besøke de gjenværende håndverksbutikkene i byen.

– Vi har flere tradisjonsrike håndverkere, som møbeltapetserere og malere. Går du litt ut av hovedgaten, vil du finne masse god atmosfære, sier han.

Marked for nytt og gammelt Esbjerg byr også på markeder av mange slag. Rådhustorget, sentralt i Esbjerg, er stedet om du vil handle friske råvarer fra fjern og nær. Ferske grønnsaker, blomster, frukt, honning, ost og andre delikatesser fristes det med fra de mange bodene. Markedet er åpent onsdager og lørdager hele mai, juni og juli. I sommerhalvåret er kalenderen full av ulike kulturarrangementer. Den 1. august er det landbruksmarked, og fra 7. til 15. august er det Esbjerg-fest med hele 130 ulike ting på programmet. Fra byens sprudlende uteserveringer er det fint å hvile beina og ta inn over seg det pulserende livet.

– Esbjerg er en selvskreven shoppingby for både turister og fastboende. Sammen med kunst- og kulturopplevelser blir besøket komplett, sier Christensen.

Side streets of gold One typical Esbjergian specialty business operates on a little side street off Kongensgade. The goldsmith Henrik Nielsen has worked with precious metals there for 25 years, and in 2004 he took over the shop from his mother. He specializes in creating jewelry designed according to his customers’ wishes.

“Often I’ll make new rings and jewelry based on gold that people already have, or that they have inherited. Customers are very happy when they can decide for themselves,” says Nielsen in “Gullsmedien.”

He recommends that tourists visit the remaining handicraft shops in town. “We have several traditional craftsmen, like upholsterers and painters,” he says. “If you get a little away from the main street, you will find plenty of good atmosphere.”

Market for new and old Esbjerg also has a variety of open markets. Rådhustorvet in central Esbjerg is the place to buy fresh produce from far and near. Vegetables, flowers, fruit, honey, cheese and other delicacies are laid out temptingly by farmers in the many stalls. The market is open Wednesdays and Saturdays all through May, June and July. In the summertime, the calendar is crowded with cultural events. The agricultural market is set for August 1, while the Esbjerg Festival runs from August 7-15, with a program of 130 different happenings. It’s nice to rest your feet and take in the pulsating activity from any of the city’s lively outdoor restaurants or bars.

“Esbjerg is the ideal shopping city for tourists and residents alike,” says Christensen. “When you add in the art and culture, the visit is complete.”

Norges største modelljernbanemesse inviterer for 26. gang til en utstilling med noe for enhver smak. Langs E18 mellom Kristiansand og Oslo, cirka 40 minutter sør for Langesund, ligger Norges største regnskog. I Den Lille Dyrehage kan du blant annet oppleve en magisk regnskog og spennende dyr som småaper, lemurer, krokodiller, slanger og gårdsdyr, eller de søte sutrikatene. Dyrehagen har også en egen kafeteria, samt flott uteområde med lekeplass, der du kan slappe av med egen grillmat.

Det går i sju knops fart når over 50 tresjekter presser de gamle en- og tosylindrete motorene sine rundt øygruppen Ny-Hellesund utenfor Kristiansand under det årlige sjekteracet.

Konkurransen starter og ender på Verftet, og er en folkefest med god mat, drikke og musikk. I tillegg til å komme først i mål, konkurreres det om beste lyd, fineste båt og beste kostyme. Det blir også delt ut hederspris.

A big little zoo Along the E18 motorway between Kristiansand and Oslo, about 40 minutes south of Langesund, is is Norway’s largest rainforest. At Den lille dyrehage (The Little Zoo), you’ll experience the magic of the rainforest and intriguing animals that include primates, lemurs, crocodiles, snakes and farm animals. And how about those sweet meerkats?

The zoo also has its own cafeteria and a wonderful outdoor area, including a playground, where you can relax and grill your own food.

‘Sjekte’ race in Ny-Hellesund Put-putting at speeds up to seven knots, the owners of more than 50 traditional wooden “sjekte” boats will push their one- and two-stroke motors to the limit around the islands of Ny-Hellesund, outside Kristiansand. The annual race starts and ends at Verftet, and includes a festival of good food, drink and music. In addition to getting to the finish line first, participants compete for the title of best motor sound, finest boat and best costume. An honorary prize is also awarded.

Norsk fyrhistorie har dype røtter. Faktisk er det funnet spor av sjømerking helt tilbake til sagatiden, da Floke skal ha bygget det vi i dag kjenner som Ryvarden.

På midten av 1800-tallet ble Fyrdirektoratet opprettet. I løpet av de neste 40 årene ble det bygget over 100 bemannede fyrstasjoner. Kvaliteten på fyrbelysningen ble stadig bedre, og elektrisk drevne løsninger gjorde etter hvert at fyrstasjonene kunne opereres uten tilsyn. Den siste fyrstasjonen ble avbemannet i 2006.

Fyrene er en del av utsikten du kan nyte når du seiler på tur med Fjord Line.

Fram til 1838 var Vågen, i likhet med andre innseilinger til Bergen, totalt mørklagt på nattetid, og det forekom stadig at fartøyer bommet og seilte inn andre fjordløp isteden.

Vatlestraumen var ett av fyrene som ble bygget for å gjøre navigasjonen i området lettere.

Under 2. verdenskrig bygget tyskerne et vakttårn 75 meter fra fyrstasjonen. Tårnet ble brukt til å overvåke all trafikk i området som fyret dekket.

I 2011 fikk Leirvik fyr sin egen venneforening, Venelaget for Leirvik Fyrforeningen vil oppgradere og vedlikeholdet fyret slik at det kan bli tilgjengelig for allmennheten.

Until 1838 Vågen bay, like other seaward approaches to Bergen, was dark at night and vessel captains often sailed into the wrong fjord passage. Vatlestraumen was one of the lighthouses built to ease navigation in the area.

During WWII the Germans built a watchtower 75 m from the lighthouse. The tower was used to monitor all traffic in the area covered by the lighthouse. In 2011 a support association called Friends of Leirvik Lighthouse was set up. The association will upgrade and maintain the lighthouse so it can be made available to the public.

Oksøy was the first lighthouse in Norway to be equipped with a modern lens apparatus that gathered and reflected light. C. J. Bergh was the first lighthouse manager – a position he held until 1875.

Norwegian lighthouse history has deep roots.

Archeologists have found traces of navigational markers dating back to the Viking sagas when Floke is thought to have built the forerunner of today’s Ryvarden Lighthouse.

OSLO

In the mid-1800s Norway created the Directorate of Lighthouses. Over the next 40 years more than 100 manned lighthouses were built. The quality of lighting improved continuously, and the advent of electric power eventually meant lighthouses could operate without supervision. More and more lighthouses were automated.

The last manned lighthouse station was vacated in 2006.

Langøytangen fungerer som et landemerke for alle sjøfarende som ankommer Langesundsfjorden og Telemarkskanalen.

Færder Fyr er selve veiviseren og landemerket i Ytre Oslofjord. Fyret rager 47 meter over havoverflaten. Selve tårnet måler 43 meter og er landets nest høyeste støpejernstårn.

Færder Lighthouse is the main signpost and landmark in the outer Oslofjord. It rises to a point 47 m over sea level. The tower itself, with a height of 43 m, is the country’s second tallest cast iron tower.

Hun er hotellsjef på ærverdige Ystad Saltsjöbad, helt sør i Sverige. I 118 år har hotellet tatt imot gjester som vil oppleve den skånske kysten på nært hold.

Badehotellet ligger på stranden utenfor Ystad og ble bygd av en bankmann og en apoteker i 1897.

– Det sies at de under byggingen, om natten da ingen så på, flyttet konstruksjonen for å komme nærmest mulig havet, smiler Henriksson.

Hennes anbefaling er å sette seg i bilen og la hjertet føre deg rundt i landskapet.

– Det finnes så mange hyggelige steder langs de mange veiene, kunstnere du kan besøke hjemme, turstier og landhandlere. Min anbefaling er å reise rundt og bare være til stede.

Noe unikt Skåne er det sørligste fylket i Sverige og strekker seg over 11 000 kvadratkilometer.

Med storbyer som Malmø er fylket et av Sveriges tettest befolkede. Det var tidligere en del av Danmark, og her ligger slottene og herregårdene tett. Det bølgende landskapet og kyst på tre kanter er Skånes særmerke. Sammen med kritthvite strender gjør det at Skåne ofte blir omtalt som «Sveriges Syden».

“The open landscape takes your breath away! All the colors and fragrances come together to create incredible experiences. Skåne can offer up everything in terms of the sea, beaches, woods, cozy cafés and lots to do and visit.

Skåne gives you a sense of freedom,” proclaims Johanna Dahlsjö Henriksson.

She is the hotel manager at the venerable Ystad Saltsjöbad, in southernmost Sweden.

For 118 years the hotel has welcomed guests who have a desire to experience the Skåne coast up close. The hotel and spa, located on the beach outside Ystad, were built by a banker and an apothecary in 1897.

“It’s said that during the building process, at night when nobody was looking, they moved the construction as close as possible to the sea,” Henriksson says with a smile.

Her recommendation for guests is to get in the car and let their hearts lead them around the countryside.

“There are so many nice places on the roads around here, including artists who can be visited at home, trails and village merchants. My recommendation is to travel around and just be alive.”

Something unique Skåne, sometimes called Scania in English, is Sweden’s southernmost county, covering an area of 11,000 square kilometres. With big cities like Malmö, it is one of the most densely populated counties in Sweden. It was once a part of Denmark, and is crowded with castles and manor houses. The rolling countryside with coastline on three sides is Skåne’s trademark. Add in the sandy white beaches and it’s clear why Skåne is often referred to as “Sweden’s Riviera.”

“Our beaches are included in the international rankings along with the best ones of the Riviera or in Florida,” says Sara Brynskog of Tourism in Skåne. “We also get compared with Tuscany, but I’m not that interested in emulating others.

Skåne is a totally unique experience.”

She suggests exploring the area on foot. “Skåneleden” is a 1,000-km trail that takes you across forests, mountains and seafront.

The trail is well marked and recently upgraded in anticipation of next year’s “Eurorando”, Europe’s largest hiking event.

More than 6,000 hikers are expected. The scenic region also offers more unconventional activities. Hiking with alpacas, velocipede trolley cycling, bat safaris and caving are a few examples.

And in one of northern Europe’s largest agricultural areas, locally produced food and drink are never far away.

“Skåne is Sweden’s bread basket, and offers everything from gourmet restaurants in the cities to farm-fresh foods,” says Brynskog.

I

løpet av de siste ti årene har HafenCity i Hamburg gått fra å være et forlatt industriområde til å bli Europas største byutviklingsprosjekt. Kun en kilometer fra togstasjonen og 800 meter fra Rådhuset bygges det ene arkitektoniske mesterverket etter det andre på grunnen som tidligere var grå og grumsete.

I takt med utviklingen flytter nye butikker, restauranter og kafeer inn i området.

– Vi så en mulighet vi ikke kunne la gå fra oss. Det gjaldt å gripe sjansen mens vi hadde den. Vi visste at området raskt ville bygges ut, sier Francesco Potenza.

Han er daglig leder på Carls an der Elbphilharmonie. Carls åpnet i 2008.

Restauranten er en av de eldste i nye HafenCity.

En av de første Vi sitter ved et vindusbord i brasseriet. Mellom oss på bordet står to fat med hver sin ferske brødskive. Min er toppet med olivenmarmelade, kremost og stekte grønnsaker. Gjennom vinduene til venstre opptar kultur- og forretningsbygget Elbphilharmonie hele utsikten. På historisk grunn, med rød grunnmur ytterst på Kaiserkai, er dette glassbygget i ferd med å markere seg som Hamburgs nye landemerke. I tillegg skal det for alvor sette Hamburg på musikkartet i Europa når dørene åpnes i 2017.

– Da må nok både vi og de andre restaurantene i nærområdet raskt endre åpningstidene våre, sier Potenza om bygget som ikke bare vil huse store konserter og musikkstykker.

Trendy og annerledes HafenCity var i utgangspunktet et privat eid område. Myndighetene kjøpte den gamle havnen, og i 2003 begynte utviklingen og oppbyggingen. Selv om HafenCity allerede kan by på et godt utvalg av butikker, restauranter, museer og parker, er området bare halvferdig. Det ventes at shoppingtilbudet vil bli utvidet med 30 prosent, og at området vil trekke til seg over tre millioner besøkende i året.

– Butikkene her skiller seg litt fra dem som ligger midt i sentrumskjernen.

De er trendy og gjerne litt annerledes, forteller guide Mara Burmeister.

Har gågate Vi rusler rolig mellom boardsene i en bildeutstilling langs Überseeboulevard – gågaten i HafenCity som åpnet i 2010. Her ligger smoothiebarer, klesbutikker, kaffebarer, små restauranter og kuriositetsbutikker side om side.

– Jeg elsker å gå inn her når jeg skal kjøpe gaver, sier Burmeister.

Building tomorrow’s port city Both historic and futuristic, with elements of the sea’s power and spectacle. The harbor area that lay barren so long has risen again in splendid new attire.

Over the last decade, HafenCity in Hamburg has been transformed from an abandoned industrial area to Europe’s largest urban development project. Just a kilometer from the train station and 800 m from City Hall, one architectural masterpiece after another is arising from earth once muddy and grey.

As the changes have occurred, new shops, restaurants and cafes have moved into the area.

“We saw an opportunity that we couldn’t let slip away,” says Francesco Potenza, who runs the restaurant Carls an der Elbphilharmonie. “We had to seize the chance while we had it. We knew the area would develop quickly.” The restaurant opened in 2008 – and is one of the oldest in the new HafenCity.

Between us are two plates, each with a fresh slice of bread. Mine is topped with olive marmalade, cream cheese and sautéed vegetables. Through the windows, the Elbphilharmonie concert house occupies the entire view. Situated on historic ground at the tip of Kaiserkai, the glass concert hall with its red-brick base is Hamburg’s new landmark. When the doors open for major concerts and musicals in 2017, the new facility will also put Hamburg on Europe’s musical map, once and for all.

It is also a quieter part of town that lets you relax. Buy an ice cream in one of the many good ice cream shops, and just walk around the streets enjoying the view of the sea and the architecture.

“We and the other restaurants in the neighborhood will probably have to change our opening hours when that happens,” says Potenza.

Some 250 Westin hotel rooms will also be opening here.

Trendy and different HafenCity was a privately owned area to begin with.

The authorities bought the old port and, in 2003, began development and construction. Although HafenCity already offers a good selection of shops, restaurants, museums and parks, it is only half finished. Shopping space in the area is expected to grow by 30 percent, and to attract more than three million visitors a year.

“The shops here differ a little from the ones downtown,” says guide Mara Burmeister. “They are trendy and they tend to be distinctive.”

Pedestrian street We step carefully between the photos in a street exhibit along Überseeboulevard – the pedestrian street in HafenCity that opened in 2010. Smoothie bars, clothing stores, coffee shops, small restaurants and curio shops stand side by side.

“I love to go here when I’m buying gifts,” says Burmeister.

She takes a few quick steps ahead and points to a door on the right with the inscription “Nobodyisperfekt.” Inside, the store is chock full of things to make life simpler or more fun. The thousands of products include a cunning substitute for shoelaces and coffee cups to drink from without moving your head.

Pulling the past into the future Despite its futuristic look, HafenCity in no way suppresses its history. The Elbphilharmonie is just one of many buildings erected on top of old industrial structures. Historic red-brick foundations are a distinguishing feature of several buildings.

Along with the old quays and harbor basins, they help bear the area’s past into the future.

When HafenCity is complete in 2025, there will be nine hotels in all. In addition to the existing attractions, those under planning include a state-of-the-art science center for young and old.

Se et fyrstedømme fra setet Blant spisse fjelltopper og tett på innsjøer, elver og naboland er det en fryd å utforske Liechtenstein fra sykkelsetet.

H

er – midt i hjertet av Alpene – er luften frisk, tempoet rolig, gatene velholdt og sykkelstiene mange. Det er ikke uten grunn av deler av Tour de Suisse ofte går gjennom Liechtenstein. Sykkelskiltene er overalt. De er røde og forteller deg hvor du kan dra og i hvilket terreng.

– Vi har et variert natur med bratte fjell og flate daler innenfor et lite område, sier guide Martin Knöpfel om det over 100 kilometer store sykkelrutenettet i Liechtenstein.

Tipper sykkelen på skiltet oppover, står du foran terrengsykling i fjellandskap. Står sykkelen bent, er det flatt!

Vingård og slott Det er et skilt med en ben sykkel jeg først passerer denne formiddagen. Sykkelhjulene ruller av gårde langs Rhinen. Elven skjærer gjennom landskapet og markerer grensen som klemmer det lille alpelandet mellom Sveits og Østerrike. Liechtenstein er på østre side. Turen startet i Triesen og gikk først sørover forbi en vingård og et gammelt slott fra 1100-tallet i Balzer.

– Det finnes flere fine stier med vingårder og slott her. Innsjøer du kan kjøle deg ned i mellom øktene også, forsikrer guiden.

Fire land på tre timer Langs Rhinen krysser vi flittig broene og veksler mellom den sveitsiske og liechtensteinske siden av elven. Vi passerer andre syklister og et par joggende langs veien. Ingen biler. Litt over en time senere bremser vi foran grensen til Østerrike.

– Om du vil, kan du spise frokost i Liechtenstein, lunsj i Sveits og middag i Østerrike, og sykle imellom. Du skal ikke sykle mye lenger om du har lyst til å inkludere Tyskland også. Det er ikke mange steder du kan sykle gjennom fire land i løpet av tre timer, forteller Knöpfel.

See a principality from your seat Amidst jagged peaks and alongside lakes, rivers and neighboring countries, exploring Liechtenstein by bike is a joy.

Here – in the heart of the Alps – the air is fresh, the pace is leisurely, the streets are well kept and the bicycle paths are numerous. It is no wonder parts of the Tour de Suisse often run through Liechtenstein. Signs for bicyclists are everywhere. They are colored red, and tell you where they’re sending you and what kind of terrain you’ll face.

“We have varied nature with steep mountains and flat valleys, all in a small area,” guide Martin Knöpfel says of the more than 100 km of cycling routes in Liechtenstein.

If the bike symbol on a sign tips upward, you know there is mountain-biking landscape ahead. If it is level, so is the terrain.

Vineyard and castle On this particular morning, the first sign I pass shows a level bicycle. My wheels roll forward, following the Rhine as it cuts through the landscape. The river is also the boundary that squeezes the little alpine country between Switzerland and Austria, with Liechtenstein on the eastern bank.

My journey started in Triesen and took me first past a vineyard and a 12th-century castle in Balzer.

“There are several lovely trails with vineyards and castles here,” the guide tells me. “And lakes to cool off in, between stages.”

Four countries in three hours Along the Rhine we cross back and forth on bridges between the Swiss and Liechtensteinian sides. We pass other cyclists and a couple of joggers. No cars. Just over an hour later, we brake at the border with Austria.

“If you want you can have breakfast in Liechtenstein, lunch in Switzerland and dinner in Austria, and cycle in between,” says Knöpfel. “And if you’d like to include Germany as well, you don’t have to ride much farther. There are not many places where you can bicycle through four countries in three hours.”

The most popular route goes from Hirtshals to Skagen, where the bike will be picked up the following day. If you rent a bike through Fjord Line’s website, you will find the option under “extras” when you book your trip.

Fifteen official trails The country’s lowest point is in a nature reserve, some 450 meters over sea level. The highest point reaches almost to 2,600 meters. You can ride all the way up to 2,100 m.

“The terrain and range of choices makes Liechtenstein good for families and hobbyists as well as more experienced bicyclists and those looking for an adrenaline rush,” says Knöpfel.

Most of the trails are either paved or gravel-surfaced.

The country has 15 official cycling trails in all, to be ridden separately or in combination.

Whatever it is that motivates you, a mountainside trip is highly recommended. All the effort and all those beads of sweat seem worth it when you stand on a summit with the beautiful Alpine landscape stretching as far as the eye can see across one of the world’s smallest principalities.

That is a promise!

Denmark is becoming a land of wine.

Danish vineyards are gaining recognition for their high quality.

ed lyse kvelder og kalde netter gjør danske druer fremmarsj i vinverdenen. Økt gjennomsnittstemperatur har gjort vindyrking mulig på dansk jord. Fra 2001 til i dag har antall vinprodusenter økt fra to til nærmere 90, og de danske dråpene bemerker seg i internasjonale konkurranser mot tradisjonelle vinprodusenter.

Innerst ved Koldingfjorden, sør på Jylland, ligger Danmarks første og mest premierte vingård. Ved den lille landsbyen Dons, i sørvendte skråninger og med smeltevann som næring, dyrker Sven Moesgaard sine 15 000 vinstokker. Siden 2001 har han laget både rødvin, hvitvin, rosévin og dessertvin, men det er særlig den musserende vinen som er Skærsøgaard Vins store styrke. Takket være høyt innhold av fruktsyre har de sprudlende dråpene utkonkurrert ekte champagne i internasjonale konkurranser.

– Dansk musserende vin er blitt kjent verden over. Det er vi stolte av, sier Moesgaard, som nå opplever stor etterspørsel, særlig blant restauranter som spesialiserer seg på det nordiske kjøkken og ivrer for lokal mat på fat og i glass.

Kjemikeren fikk ideen om å lage vin tilbake i 1995. I rekordåret 2014 høstet han 16 tonn druer, noe som tilsvarer cirka 16 000 flasker. Entusiasten lager også vin av dansk frukt, med hell. Nylig gikk hans økologiske eplehetvin til topps i The International Cider Challenge i London. With long sunlit evenings and cold nights, Danish grapes have begun to make their mark on the wine world. Increased average temperatures have made viticulture possible on Danish soil. From 2001 to today, the number of wineries has risen from two to almost 90, and the flavorful droplets they produce have distinguished themselves in international competitions.

At the inner reach of the Kolding Fjord, in southern Jutland, you’ll find Denmark’s first and most prize-winning winery. Sven Moesgaard tends his 15,000 vines on south-facing slopes nourished by snowmelt, near the small village of Dons. Since 2001 he has made red, white and rosé wines as well as a dessert wine, but Skærsøgaard Vin’s claim to fame is the sparkling wine. Thanks to its high fruit-acid content, this Danish bubbly has beat out genuine Champagne in international contests.

“Danish sparkling wine has become recognized worldwide. We’re proud of that,” says Moesgaard, who has experienced strong demand of late, especially from restaurateurs specializing in Nordic cuisine who are keen to serve local produce, whether on dinner plates or in crystal glasses.

Previously a chemist, Moesgaard got the idea of making wine back in 1995. In 2014 he harvested a record 16 tons of grapes, corresponding to approximately 16,000 bottles. He has found ways to bottle other Danish fruits, too. Recently his organic enriched apple wine scored top honors at The International Cider Challenge in London. The enthusiastic grower has great faith in the future of Nordic wines – especially of the sparkling variety.

“In 40 years Norway, Sweden and Finland will also be wine-producing countries,” says the grape-loving Dane.

Grieg Gourmet er nå blitt Grieg Steakhouses. Her diskes det opp med kjøtt i verdensklasse i form av saftige hamburgere, deilig svineribbe og fersk biff.

Du kan sette sammen din egen meny, og halvporsjoner er tilgjengelig for barn. Den nye restauranten ligger på den aktre delen av dekk 7. Velkommen inn!

Mens noe er tilpasset de minste, er andre deler tilpasset større barn. Noe passer også for barn i alle aldre. Vi bruker havets figurer, skaper undervannsunivers på vegger, tak, gulv og interiør på barbord side på dekk 7 like ved Fjord Lounge. Stak ut kursen og følg skiltene hit for å leke eller for mer detaljert informasjon.

e cast off and head under the ocean. Come with us on a deep-sea dive into kids’ summer through the exciting and magical life of the Underwater Club. It’s the club for all inquisitive children. Our activity leaders, wearing sailor suits and bright red caps, organize fun activities, live entertainment, creative drawing contests and even a colorful children’s buffet in the Commander Buffet. While some of the fun is pitched at the youngest children, much of it is suitable for bigger kids – or for those of any age. We draw inspiration from the figures of the sea, creating an underwater universe on the walls, ceilings and floors of Deck 7 on the port side, by the Fjord Lounge. Stake out a course and follow the signs to come play, or to get more information.

New on the menu Grieg Gourmet has become Grieg Steakhouse. The new restaurant dishes up world-class meat selections in the form of juicy hamburgers, delightful pork ribs and of course fresh steaks. You can assemble your own menu, and half portions are available for children. Grieg Steakhouse is located aft on Deck 7. Welcome!

På MS Oslofjord Fra 26. juni til 7. juli er det underholdning om bord på alle avganger fra klokken 13.00. En trubadur vil underholde med variert musikk, og barneunderholdning vil finne sted på scenen i Fjord of Coffee. I Commander Buffet tilbyr vi sommerbuffet, og i Skybar finner du musikk og grillmeny.

Vi har også fått vårt eget outlet om bord. En 600 kvadratmeter stor butikk er nå smekket med kjente merkevarer og fristelser som du kan utforske på overfarten.

Aboard the MS Oslofjord From June 26 to July 7, all departures from 1 p.m. onwards will feature onboard entertainment. A troubadour will entertain with varied music, and children’s entertainment will take place on the stage in Fjord of Coffee. In the Commander Buffet we offer a summer buffet, and in the Skybar you’ll find music and a grill menu.

FJORD CAT Det skal ikke stå på reiselengden. Selv om overfarten med Fjord Cat ikke er på mer enn 2 timer og 15 minutter, ønsker vi at barna skal kunne leke og kose seg mens de er om bord. Vi har laget et splitter nytt lekerom som barna kan boltre seg i. Vi vil også tilby barneaktiviteter og filmvisning. I buffeten finner du barnevennlige varme og kalde retter.

FJORD CAT Travel time should be no obstacle. Though a crossing with Fjord Cat takes no more than 2 hours and 15 minutes, we love to see kids playing and enjoying themselves on board. So we’ve made a brand new playroom where they can frolic. Children’s activities and movies will also be provided.

In the buffet, you’ll find child-friendly hot and cold dishes.
