WHAT’S INSIDE

eHosting DataFort (eHDF) has launched its public cloud services at GITEX Technology Week 2013. Among the first cloud service providers in the region, eHDF owns and operates multiple data centres in Dubai and offers customers the advantage of hosting all data within the UAE. The new service will provide clients with the flexibility to buy public cloud platforms with an easy- to-use selfservice online portal, the first of its kind in the UAE. eHDF successfully launched private 4 CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

MMD, monitor specialists, displayed its full line of tablets in the AOC brand on the first day of GITEX Technology Week 2013. The company plans to launch the line in Q1 of 2014. Being product focused at the event, MMD hopes to announce certain partner initiatives next year and is also looking at innovation

in monitors, which is a market differentiator for the company. It is also enabling the monitor to function independently from the PC, allowing even a portable device to be displayed on a larger screen. “We are interested in continuous 4 CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

MMD display... growth and want to become a leader in every area we have. We focus only on business and our business partners have experienced that it is one of the largest advantage we have over competition. We are reliable partners to our customers as we ensure that we sort out every issue with monitors. For us investing into monitors means innovation. Markets around the world are facing stagnation because largely due to a weakness in the PC market but also mainly because of a lack of innovation in the monitor markets,” explains Thomas Schade, GM – EMEA, MMD Display Solutions. The company has strong B2B focus but also have B2C products. The focus in Philips, one of its brands, is around sustainability and ergonomic. “We have power saving devices with power censors

and we have censors, which sees how one is sitting in front of the monitor and recommends the correct posture,” says Schade. The tag line for 2014 for the company is ‘get closer to your customers’. “Who are your final customers? In 2014, we will take all the B2B and B2C products and we would like to get closer to our channel partners and our end customers so that we can achieve a sustainable growth,” adds Schade. For the next quarter, the company wants to segment its channels into reseller and retailer channels. And also want to get vertical specific, for example have products in health care, which it is already exploring. “We are here for the first time ever at GITEX, and it is a clear sign that we are going to enter this region in a more sustainable way,” concludes Schade.

cloud services at GITEX Technology Week 2012 and has seen significant growth in its private cloud customer portfolio in the last year, having implemented innovative private cloud solutions for regional enterprises such as EFS Facilities Services and the online mall Tejuri.com. With the introduction of the public cloud, small and medium businesses will now be able to buy locally-hosted cloud infrastructure services. Multiple configurations and OS flavours will be available for customers to choose from and the platform would allow quick scale up thus providing a model with no capital investments on hardware. Such solutions are imperative for businesses that require rapid provisioning at low costs, but still need reliable IT infrastructure. eHDF has set up an online store and catalogue that allows clients to customize and buy the public

cloud services that they require by paying the fees online – with options that start from US$150 per month. Clients can set up and start using their virtual machines (VMs) in less than 15 minutes. The virtual machines are easily scalable with the option to increase or decrease memory, CPU at the click of a button. Yasser Zeineldin, CEO at eHosting DataFort, said: “Small- to-medium businesses have been under-served in the region so far, and our public cloud solutions are an endeavour to fulfil the gap in the market for effective enterprise-grade cloud computing solutions suitable for the SMB sector. Cloud service providers will have to ensure that their services evolve robustly to meet varying customer requirements and allow users the freedom to choose between platforms such as private, public or hybrid cloud.”

Security finally a boardroom concern

IT security has finally ended up in the boardroom of large enterprises in the Middle East, according to Christian Beek, Director of Incident Response and Forensics, McAfee EMEA. Security vendor McAfee are presenting workshops to endusers at GITEX Technology Week

2013, and Beek said the response has been that security is now being taken seriously in this region. However, he added that more work needs to be done. “I think they have difficulties to sell the message,” he said. “What are the real priorities and metrics? That will be the real challenge for them.” McAfee are using the workshops to show end-users the whole threat lifecycle, how threats are evolving, and what can stop them. “We show how we do the in-depth analysis by looking at what is really going on with the malware and what is the real threat to the company,” Beek said. “Many people detect a virus in their company but don’t know the impact because they don’t have the people to do the analysis of the malware itself.”

However, the Beek has also observed that a lot of people in the region still think an attack won’t and are subsequently not adequately prepared. Furthermore, sometimes organisations choose not to share attacks, which Beek believes can be wrong. “At some level it is important they do share,” he said. “We did an investigation two weeks ago when a manufacturer was attacked, and we saw that the attackers were also aiming at other peers in the same industry, so we warned them. “But if a bank is under attack by a specific kind of malware, it would be nice if they could share some of the details so that we can share that with the other banks.” Going forward, the role of the CSO (chief security officer) has

become more relevant in a world where anybody is a potential victim of cybercrime. Whilst the position is still very rare in the Middle East, Beek believes the time is now for that to change. “The role of the CSO is definitely now necessary in the Middle East and is something companies should be considering,” he said. “Everybody’s complaining about security costing money. “They really should do the math to see what it will cost them if an incident occurs.” To do that, CIOs need to find out how to get proper metrics for security and the measures they take, he added. “Based on that, they can actually easily present to management the effects of having security and not having security.”

PackshotCreator launches two new products The French company, PackshotCreator has debuted two new products at GITEXPackshotSphere X5 and PackshotMacro R. The PackshotSphere X5 comes equipped with five cameras that enables the users to capture up to 1800 HD views of a large product in a single click. And can create 3D animations of products up to 1,20 meter wide .The new software version is more user friendly and features a new interface to optimise images with tools such as levels and colour curves. With the help of the five controlled cameras, the creation of multi-angle views is automated and it also has a deep zoom feature.

Images and animations can be saved in RAW or JPEG formats and animations can be generated in the Flash and HTML5 formats, which is helpful for advanced users. While the PackshotMacro R is designed, the company says, keeping in mind watchmaking and jewellery professionals, enabling them to make their own images and animations of their products and customer needs. It allows professionals to create pictures managing shadows and reflections well, according to the company. It also allows any professional to self-create and download pictures and animations of rings, watches, bracelets, immediately on a website.

GITEX preview: WD drives. The first generation Red drives were launched in 2012 and were the first hard drives on the market that were purpose built for 1-to-5 bay network attached storage (NAS) enclosures designed for homes and small offices. With the launch of our second generation WD Red drives, WD again made history as the first and only storage vendor in the world to offer a 2.5-inch drive designed for 1-to-5 bay SOHO NAS enclosures. We will also be highlighting our consumer electronic (CE) and audio video (AV) focused drives, the WD AV-GP and WD AV25 at GITEX 2013.

opportunity to choose a purpose built product that offers all the performance, features and reliability one expects from the world’s leading storage vendor.

How is your company presenting itself at GITEX this year to differentiate it from competitors? WD is the world’s number one storage provider and we are in the unique position of being the only storage vendor that offers users, in every segment of the market, real power of choice. We will be presenting just how our broad portfolio of products directly addresses current and future demands. Whatever the need, with WD, a customer has the power of choice and can rely on our products to address their needs.

Are you releasing/launching anything new at GITEX 2013? If so, what? During GITEX Technology Week we will be focusing on several of our products including our second generation WD Red SOHO NAS

What are the key trends influencing your approach to GITEX 2013 and the offerings you are pushing? As the region is currently investing in digital video surveillance systems with new real estate projects etc. and

Khwaja Saifuddin, Senior Sales Director, Middle East, Africa & South Asia, WD What is the main theme of your presence at GITEX this year? upgrading from older analog systems to digital systems, we opted to make one of our key focuses at GITEX our WD AV family of drives. In the coming years we also expect the demand for open source SOHO NAS solutions and thus the need for drives for those solutions to grow considerably. With our WD Red drive family we are perfectly positioned to address those demands as well. How have you seen the Middle East respond to those trends in question, and how did you think that will change over the next year? The adoption of new concepts and technologies in the Middle East is on the increase. The appetite for high tech digital video surveillance systems has been steadily growing over the years and is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. The appetite for open source NAS systems is also increasing thanks to the explosion of data in the home and small office (SOHO) segments. Users in the SOHO segment today have multiple computing devices, want remote access and want their data to be protected by robust storage systems and a WD Red powered NAS is the perfect answer to all these demands. While the adoption of these devices has been tempered slightly, owing to a lack of knowledge about NAS products and costly Internet and mobile data packages, we expect the demand to increase steadily in the coming years as storage needs grow.
