Organisations in the Middle East are ignoring the bring-your-owndevice (BYOD) trend, according to the EMEA Managing Director of enterprise mobility vendor AirWatch.

BYOD has had a rising influence on the enterprise as employees insist on using their personallyowned smartphones in the work place.

Whilst this increases productivity and employee satisfaction, it also creates major network and security concerns for IT departments.

AirWatch is amongst a growing trend of companies offering mobile device management (MDM) solutions, amongst other enterprise mobility products, to help businesses keep protected whilst embracing BYOD. However, whilst AirWatch already has a strong deployment record in the Middle East, Evans believes overall the region is ignoring the trend.

“If you’ve got a corporate BlackBerry, you can run around with your iPhone or Samsung device in your pocket, and that seems okay here,” he said. “I guess there’s a little bit of a lack of understanding of it.

“There’s not been much of a scare over here in terms of security beyond the Saudi Aramco cyber security attack.”

customer of AirWatch. But out of its 50,000-plus employees, the oil and gas giant has only deployed AirWatch solutions on devices belonging to 1,000 executives.

Furthermore, AirWatch has been deployed on 800 to 900 devices at Emirates Airlines over the last twoand-a-years for maintenance and baggage-handler crews.

However, Evans explained, the company is now in talks about a fullscale BYOD project that will touch up to all of its 60,000 employees, and be far more strategic in the full nature of the business.

This is AirWatch’s second year at GITEX, but the first with its own independent booth. On top of that, it is the MDM partner at Samsung’s booth, and also has two stands at Etisalat.

Speaking of what it is presenting at the trade show this year, Evans

said the vendor has a very clear and flexible deployment strategy around device management and security.

“We also have a container approach called Workspace, where we can deploy a container to the device and just leave it alone,” he said. “So you can run whatever apps you want, but in your Workspace, only your corporate apps work, and they’re all single sign-on and tied together.

“Then we have a mobile application management (MAM) strategy for app deployment, and that can be independent of anything else as well. So you can have a fully managed device, a fully managed container, or just a managed app. That gives you the ultimate flexibility.”

According to Evans, the Middle East remains a very educational as a market for AirWatch.

GITEX preview: Philips Signage Solutions What is the main theme of your presence at GITEX this year?

Together Philips Signage, Monitors and hospitality TV will present their range of products and show clients/prospects that Philips is back in the Middle East with a whole gamut of products and partners that can support us. We will also be launching our QL line, which is our Smart Signage product.

Are you releasing/launching anything new at GITEX 2013? If so, what?

The company is all set to launch its latest range of Smart Signage product line, Q-Line Display, a 42” Edge LED Backlight, Full HD signage solution that delivers startlingly clear images in a more eco-friendly way with the edge LED display. How is your company presenting itself at GITEX this year to differentiate it from competitors? We are combining all our strength and displaying wide range of display solutions including monitors, hospitality TV and Signage solutions. In addition, we will be launching our new Smart Signage product line during the show. We also have a great booth, in a great location and have our strategic partners present that will support us locally.

What are the key trends influencing your approach to GITEX 2013 and the offerings you are pushing?

Touch and 3D is the way forward for display solutions. We want to cover all verticals and support various industries with our solutions. We have solutions for corporates, education, hospitality, medical & healthcare (with our special DICOMM screens, signage/monitors), as well as for the retail sector.

With our offerings we would like to address the whole market through display solutions targeted at specific verticals. Flexibility and ease of use is what the customer demands these days. End users don’t have the time or the technical expertise to spend their resources on handling display solutions.

Signage solutions from Philips are plug and play solutions offering flexibility and ease of use so that businesses like retailers can focus on their own core business selling

and make their lives easier and more productive.

How have you seen the Middle East respond to those trends in question, and how did you think that will change over the next year?

Philips has recently reinvented itself in the ME region and now is back with a vast portfolio of product priced highly competitive. Our wide ranges of products include a variety of Touch and 3D signage solutions, which are being displayed at GITEX. The manufacturing capability and technology edge offers us the flexibility to change and adapt to the customers’ requirements with ease to introduce new and innovative display solutions.

We believe Middle East is a growing and important market for us, and we are investing heavily in our partner network. Philips has always been a brand to reckon with and pioneers in technology. Philips is happy to be back with full force and we expect the region embraces us.

How do you think GITEX 2013 will be different to previous editions?

We have never been at Gitex before so can’t comment, but can say for us this is an important show and we are excited to be there.

What are the key offerings you will be presenting at GITEX – sum up

GITEX is extremely important to us that not only bring visitors from all across Middle East and Africa, but also from all over the world. The show allows us to enter new markets and also allows us to fortify our brand image. GITEX gives us a platform to showcase our product offering to a larger audience that would not be possible with any other show in the region.
