Amongst all the questions around technology, business strategy and ROI that have circulated the halls of GITEX this week, one has so far stood out unanswered: How does CPI Media Group publish an hourly newspaper on-site? On the production side, it warrants a large effort from a team of reporters, editors and designers to compile together enough content to fill the 60 Minutes newspaper every hour. On the technology side, however, it is a partnership with German Imaging Technology (GIT) which makes the process possible. According to Gerald Julius Pinto, Operations Manager, GIT Dubai, a lot of things go into making the newspaper. “It starts off with selecting the right printers that can print at the speeds we need,” he said. “Then we have to ensure those printers are operational at all times because even half an hour of downtime doesn’t work in your favour. “These are hardware components, and then we have the most important component, which is the people involved in it. We’ve got a highly trained team of printing technicians that take care of the printers. That’s how we make it happen by putting the hardware and software aspect together.” With only 60 minutes to get

ZTE bullish about Middle East each issue out, it is of course time limitations which stand as the biggest challenge for both GIT and CPI. “The hardest part is coordinating with CPI and ensuring that everything comes to us on time,” Pinto confirmed. “And even if it doesn’t, we pay catch up by using

a few tricks that we know about printing to ensure that the speeds are right and the coordination is done.” GIT selected HP 5525 printers to aid in the mammoth task, which fall amongst HP’s top-range line, and 4 CONTINUED ON PAGE 3
