Amongst all the questions around technology, business strategy and ROI that have circulated the halls of GITEX this week, one has so far stood out unanswered: How does CPI Media Group publish an hourly newspaper on-site?

On the production side, it warrants a large effort from a team of reporters, editors and designers to compile together enough content to fill the 60 Minutes newspaper every hour. On the technology side, however, it is a partnership with German Imaging Technology (GIT) which makes the process possible.

According to Gerald Julius Pinto, Operations Manager, GIT Dubai, a lot of things go into making the newspaper.

“It starts off with selecting the right printers that can print at the speeds we need,” he said. “Then we have to ensure those printers are operational at all times because even half an hour of downtime doesn’t work in your favour.

“These are hardware components, and then we have the most important component, which is the people involved in it.

We’ve got a highly trained team of printing technicians that take care of the printers. That’s how we make it happen by putting the hardware and software aspect together.”

ZTE bullish about Middle East each issue out, it is of course time limitations which stand as the biggest challenge for both GIT and CPI. “The hardest part is coordinating with CPI and ensuring that everything comes to us on time,” Pinto confirmed. “And even if it doesn’t, we pay catch up by using

a few tricks that we know about printing to ensure that the speeds are right and the coordination is done.”

GIT... offer excellent printing quality.

“When you look at the newsletters you can see the images are crisp and clear,” Pinto said. “They also come out in an organised and very fast fashion.

“We also chose those printers because we have the newgeneration toner, as well as chips for this cartridges which we manufacture. We found they would be best for quality and DPI resolution.”

In the first three quarters of this year, GIT Dubai grew 22.38 percent year-on-year. On average, its annual growth has exceeded 20 percent over the last 14 years, except in 2006.

Its growth has also been reflected on the employee side. It has added

about 20 new staff in the last six months, and will soon be at a workforce of 100.

In October last year it opened an Abu Dhabi, which has now grown to five staff, and late last year it also opened a Dubai Downtown office to house its entire corporate sales team. Looking ahead, it is now planning on enter markets in Africa.

The company’s growth appears to contradict statistics and industry reports in recent years that have pointed to the decline of the printing industry.

According to GIT Dubai’s CEO, Dr. Sassan Dieter Khatib-Shahidi, CEO & Executive Director, Board of Directors, these reports have served as misinformation to the industry.

“I personally don’t fully endorse

the statistics and reports of the last two or three years on the printing industry,” he said. “A lot of reports have been out there on the paper market reducing consumption, but I believe there has been a lot of confusion around whether this was impacted by people going paperless or the global recession in general.

Dr. Khatib-Shahidi added that he supports the theory that the lower print volumes were directly related to the recession and the outcome of so many people being out of jobs.

“If you calculate the percentage of people out of their jobs, it is much higher than the percentage decline in printing consumption,” he said. “So I’m not a propagator

of those saying printing has gone down because people are going paperless.”

Indeed, in emerging markets, the situation has been very different.

Paper and printing markets have in fact grown in those regions over the last couple of years.

“On a different note, it’s also always depended on what a company does and how they have bucked the trend,” Dr. KhatibShahidi said. “Our company has continuously grown, and I personally as a CEO always say that the only impediment to growth is ourselves.

“From a commercial perspective, I could care less whether a market is growing or shrinking because we just do the job better than others.”

Dell markets new tablets at GITEX Amongst Dell’s wider portfolio of products on show at GITEX 2013 is a new line of tablet computers and upgraded XPS laptops.

The tablet range includes the Venue 8 Pro running on Windows 8.1, and Venue 11 Pro, which comes with a detachable keyboard and removable battery.

Neil Hand, Vice President, Tablet & Performance PC Group, said: “We looked to design products that are versatile and can suit the

needs of businesses and general consumers, and with our new tablet range I think we have achieved that. The Venue 8 Pro is perfect if you work in somewhere like a hospital, while the Venue 11 Pro provides the satisfaction of a laptop and tablet.

“The stylus we have added to it really completes the package in terms of what we feel suits the customers’ needs.”

The Venue 7 and 8 Android versions feature Intel Atom Z2760 processors.

The two-in-one 11.6-inch laptop XPS 11 features a Quad HD display at 2560 x 1440 pixels, and a 360 degree rotating hinge design.

Meanwhile the XPS 15 has a 15.6-inch display lof 3200 x 1800 pixels, and has 4th Generation Intel Core i5 and i7 quad core processor options.

Sophos makes security simple Sophos’ arsenal of network security solutions being showcased at GITEX include Sophos Unified Threat Management (UTM), Secure Wi-Fi and Secure Email Gateway, in addition to its Endpoint security and server security solutions.

Ralf Haubrich, Vice President, Sophos CEEMEA said: “IT security products have become as complex as the networks they’re trying to secure. At Sophos we know that the solution to complexity is not more complexity.

Sophos’ Endpoint Security includes its Enduser Protection Suites, Mobile Control, Endpoint Antivirus and SafeGuard Encryption; and its server protection solutions, including Server Protection flexible

cross-platform antivirus for virtual and physical servers.

It will also be highlighting its Cloud Security offerings.

Haubrich is in no doubt that the Middle East has a big part to play in Sophos’ future: “The Middle East is a very important market for Sophos and GITEX, being the largest technology exhibition in the region, is an ideal platform for us to showcase our best-in-class security solutions portfolio, meet with regional customers and partners at a single venue and strengthen our channel network.

“We are currently seeking to expand our network of distributors and partners particularly in Saudi Arabia.”

ZTE bullish about Middle East ZTE is optimistic, says Xu ming, Vice-President of ZTE Corporation.

And there is good reason for this: Big Data, Cloud computing and BYOD are strong trends witnessed in the Middle East region, and as the company has a strong track record and success in these areas, the region represents significant promise, says Xu. “We are looking to replicate the success we’ve achieved in Asia and within the international arena. We are a leading telecommunications end-to-end provider. We are the No 4 terminal provider and No 3 infrastructure provider in the world.

ZTE is also one of the leading providers in the enterprise industry,” he says.

“One of our main objectives now is to meet with our partners in the region to strategise and better understand the principle customer

and industry requirements. This is why Gitex is the perfect platform with which to do this. An additional benefit of exhibiting at Gitex is the opportunities it offers to meet new potential customers as well as new partners.”

Already having a presence in the

region, ZTE is now looking to grow this and provide a wider range of services and products offerings, explains Xu. “ZTE is already a main telecom infrastructure provider; we have been for more than 10 years. So while many of the countries already

provide our services, devices and terminals, our ambitions are to provide more solutions to our customers. Previously, we worked a lot with telecommunications operators, but now we’ve moved over into other industries. Oil and gas, and transportation, for example, are becoming increasingly important. While we are well known for our telco-related services and terminals, we will become better known for our other services and product offerings in new industries.”

One of Gitex’s highlights so far, says Xu, is that customers know more about ZTE and its wide products and services portfolio.

“The more customers know about ZTE, the more we are in a position to offer them leading products and services, which have a positive impacts on their businesses.”

GITEX interview: Spectrami What is the main theme of your presence at GITEX this year?

Our theme is around advanced security and storage solution and we will be focusing on the same.

The theme is around advanced threat protection and how our solutions from various vendors complement and protect against various aspects of threats like malware analysis, traffic analysis, data exfiltration and forensics.

Are you releasing or launching anything new at GITEX 2013? If so, what?

We would be showcasing latest technologies from our vendors like the new application of YARA technology, a rule-based malware identification and classification tool, that will increase the real-time prevention of malware attacks by analysing threats in network traffic.

Also showcasing would be the new 6.0 release of copy data platform of Actifio which allows companies to manage data in ways that go beyond business resiliency applications, classic backup and business continuity use cases, managing enterprise data access in ways that dramatically enhance business agility How is your company presenting itself at GITEX this year to differentiate it from competitors?

We feel advanced threat protection is given prominence by majority of the enterprises simply because of the cost of disruption it poses to the business and certain high profile cases of late have created a case for organizations to have a completely new approach for protection against such threat vectors. Copy data on the other hand has been recognized by leading researchers like IDC and Gartner and consumers alike as a major concern from a cost and management perspective and customers are looking for a holistic approach to address that fundamental issue.

What are the key offerings are you presenting at GITEX? We will be focusing on our

core offering in the security and Storage solutions. These technologies are in the very niche and specialised space that address a very urgent need of the customers today.

With fidelis it is all about zero day and advanced attack protection, LogRhythm has upped the ante with the new network recorder solution which gives customer visibility into much needed telemetry which is normally missed by normal log sources, Tenable on the other hand is the only real time vulnerability detection solution in market which gives unified security monitoring Solution.

And likewise Actifio’s disruptive copy data storage accelerates automated application development workflows up to 300 per cent, saves infrastructure for cloud services, and offers mobile monitoring and management

How important is GITEX as a platform and event to your organisation?

Gitex is especially important for young companies as it represents an opportunity to interact with various customers and channel partners at the venue. It also helps in show casing your commitment to the region. It has always been a great platform for us to create new projects.

We have always managed to secure large deals. At the same time it also provides visibility and branding opportunity to connect with a large audience.
