Organisations can make sense of their content, streamline discovery to improve insight and make smart decisions about how they want to retain it whilst making cloud storage a practical reality through the industry’s most advanced data classification and retention capabilities, it added.

Legacy solutions that focus on backup or force customers to archive irrelevant data, without compliance, evidentiary or other organizational value, increase overall costs and risk and inhibit cloud adoption.

Traditional archive platforms are cumbersome and make it difficult to secure, find and recover siloed data

across the enterprise. Long-term data retention approaches need to be automated, flexible and granular.

According to Gartner, 62 percent of organisations still do not utilise any specific tools to help them understand and to make decisions on the retention and management of their unstructured data.

Archiving is starting to better penetrate organisations, but this is often just moving the problem from primary storage to a less expensive archive, CommVault said.

According to the company, Simpana Reference Copy addresses these emerging requirements by leveraging the intelligence and efficiency of Simpana ContentStore to collect, organise, index and classify data based on user-defined policies.

Once data is centralised in the ContentStore, CommVault’s

hardware agnostic virtual repository, Reference Copy provides automated, granular policies for tiering, retention and classification that allow business to keep only the most relevant files and emails.

Enabling cost-effective online long-term storage, centralised search and self-service access for analytics and eDiscovery make Simpana software suitable for highly regulated or litigious industries that must retain data for seven or more years, such as healthcare, government and education.

Reference Copy is immediately available as part of the Simpana 10 software platform from CommVault or its global PartnerAdvantage reseller network of channel, OEM, managed service provider and distributor partners.

McAfee demonstrates cyberattack lifecycle at GITEX

Global IT security company McAfee has organised two workshops at GITEX Technology Week 2013 to educate IT professionals on the lifecycle of cyber-attacks.

The workshops were attended

by IT executives from both public and private sectors.

“An average of 3000 computers per week in the UAE connect to a bot-net, awaiting instructions to be used in an attack or information is stolen from these computers,” said Hamed Diab, Regional Director, MENA, McAfee.

to raise awareness among all our stakeholders, customers and individuals on the best ways to keep their information safe from cyber-attacks.”

The two workshops showcased the development of cyber-attacks’ lifecycle, and the latest methods used by cyber criminals to infiltrate the networks and information databases.

The sessions also offered the best and latest preventive solutions against sometimes destructive cybercrimes. The aim of the workshops was to share McAfee’s experts’ knowledge and experience in the field of

cybercrime and its prevention by means of incident response and post forensic practices.

“The Middle east is witnessing an increase in cybercrimes targeting various sectors,” Diab said. “We urge all government and private sectors to invest in best solutions to prevent and minimise the impact of attacks.

To serve that matter, McAfee has recently launched its first Cyber Defense Center (CDC) in Dubai to offer incident response support, assessments and security education to customers across the EMEA region.

The tank used anonymous data from Arbor Networks’ ATLAS global threat monitoring system to build a data visualisation that allows users to explore historical trends in DDoS attacks, and make the connection to related news events on any given day. The data is updated daily, and historical data can be viewed for all countries.

The Digital Attack Map was introduced today at the ‘Conflict in a Connected World’ summit, hosted

by Google Ideas, in partnership with the Council on Foreign Relations and the Gen Next Foundation, and announced at GITEX Technology Weeks 2013.

When Arbor Networks first began working with leading network operators in 2000, flood attacks were in the 400Mb/sec range. Today, they regularly exceed 100Gb/sec.

The sheer size of the attacks is not all that has changed. Beginning in 2010, and driven in no small part by the rise of hacktivism, we’ve seen a renaissance in DDoS attacks that has led to innovation in the areas of tools, targets and techniques.

Today, DDoS is a complex threat that mixes flood, application and infrastructure attacks in a single, blended attack.

“The people at Google Ideas have really done an amazing job bringing Arbor’s global DDoS attack data to life,” Colin Doherty, President, Arbor Networks. “The goal of this collaboration was to show what a global threat DDoS is and how DDoS can be used to suppress speech and threaten open access to information.”

Dubai Smart Government hosts Egyptian delegation Dubai Smart Government (DSG) hosted a high level Egyptian official delegation at GITEX today, headed by Dr. Atef Helmy, Minister of ICT, and Dr. Nahla Adli, Deputy Minister.

The delegates were briefed on Dubai’s pioneering experience in eTransformation and its methodology to transform Dubai into a smart city.

The delegation was received by H.E. Ahmad Bin Humaidan, Director General of Dubai Smart Government, who stressed the importance of exchanging best practices with all regional and Arab government entities.

Attendees were briefed on Dubai Smart Government’s achievements over the past decade, which includes the provision of government services through innovative electronic channels to ease the lives of citizens, residents, businesses and visitors.

The delegation was also briefed on the new bouquet of smart apps and projects including mPay, mDubai, the recently launched MyID single-sign on project, and the government resources planning systems.

Commenting on the visit, Humaidan said: “We are pleased to host our brothers from Egypt to familiarise them with our experiences and quest to build a world class future government that will transform Dubai into a smart city.

“We are always ready to share our experiences as per the directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who has always emphasized that our experience should be shared for all Arabs.”

He added that DSG will continue this role in its capacity as the first

eGovernment and now smart government in the Arab world.

“This motivates us to work diligently to be in the lead in our knowledge-based economy both regionally and internationally,” he said. “GITEX has been an ideal platform for holding bilateral talks with our Egyptian brothers and for networking with other delegates to ensure overall government development at the regional level.”

In turn, the Egyptian delegation praised and thanked its hosts at Dubai Smart Government, and felt that this was an ideal opportunity to share best practices with each country to push forward the wheel of smart transformation.

of smart apps and projects, including mPay, mDubai, MyID single-sign on project, and the government resources planning systems. mPay ensures customers can pay government bills easily through their smartphones, while mDubai offers access to government services, information and feedback and complaints.

When developing new products we always bear in mind customer needs and this year we will represent the need for cost savings and high quality through a selection of our best projectors and printers.

Although consumers are shifting towards mobility, still they look for products with high quality output and low cost of ownership, such as portable projectors with 3,000 lumens and above and products with high quality and low running cost especially for products with supplies, such as printers.
