ME is ‘superstar region’ for Intermec

Ian Snadden, VP, Intermec EMEA The Middle East is the “superstar region” when it comes to growth, according to auto ID and data capture company Intermec.

Intermec saw a significant growth of around 37% in the region last year and is expecting that to continue going forward, its EMEA VP Ian Snadden said.

“This is a high growth region for companies fundamentally changing how they conduct a business process. We’ve also seen a rapid expansion of existing customers

who are increasing the number of routes they’re doing and increasing their distribution to meet the market demand,” Snadden said.

He went on to refer to the Middle East as “by far” the fastest early adopter of new technology in the world.

“It’s a region that shows the world how to look forward and embrace change. Every time you look out the windows in this region you see change happening and our technology is an enabler to change.

As we introduce new technologies with new capabilities, the Middle East is always one of the first to adopt fast,” he said.

Whilst the region’s wealth and growth is often attributed as the reason for this fast adoption, Snadden said he believes it’s actually mainly because of the absence of legacy.

“Dragging around a legacy is one of the biggest IT challenges in the developed world, but in the Middle East the vast majority of field workers don’t have to worry about that. For the most part, our technologies are all about paper-replacement and real optimisation of the work force. We’re

taking the core systems all the way to the customer,” he said.

Speaking of GITEX in particular, Intermec sees the event as the most important investment invest in its entire year in terms of interacting with customers, partners and the market in general.

“We’re in a high convergence space where we have a great range of products and services that really orbit data capture and the barcode. Bar codes are now omnipresent and that is because people have data capture devices in their pocket all the time.

Sometimes that’s consumer-related, but very often it’s to execute a business process. At GITEX we are displaying our capabilities and interface with CIOs and customers that are being pulled towards mobility, both in a B2B way and consumer way,” Snadden said.

Intermec is unique in the auto ID market space in that it’s the only organisation that has a broad portfolio of scanners, computers and printers – both mobile and fixed.

Intermec is here with its own presence but also with its partner network, which Snadden said is vital to the success of the company.

“We would not be as effective with meeting customers’ demands on the ground in so many territories were it not for a very loyal and competent partner network. It is the partners that provide the day-to-day support to our customers and bring the final solution to the customer in terms of hardware, software and support,” he said.

Huawei showcases quad-core devices Huawei captured consumer attention today during this week’s GITEX technology show as the company revealed plans for the UAE launch of two of its latest smart devices including the company’s first quad-core smartphone, the Ascend D1 quad XL, and the world’s first 10 inch quad-core tablet with full HD resolution, the MediaPad 10 FHD—both utilizing Huawei’s own proprietary chipset.

Showcased during a GITEX sneak preview earlier today, both of the Android-run devices will be available to the public starting November 1st in retailers across UAE. Still space for Ultrabook in PC market, says Intel

Nassir Nauthoa, GM GCC, Intel Whilst recent reports have indicated that Ultrabook sales have been disappointing, Intel is adamant the Middle East continues to react well to the technology.

According to Nassir Nauthoa, GITEX Shopper 2012 was a very successful event for the Ultrabook, with most vendors selling out their products. “From that standpoint, the response is definitely at a good pace,” Nauthoa said.

However, he also acknowledged that there is still extra room for

growth in that particular category of personal computing.

“We’re in the process of establishing the Ultrabook category.

We believe that the form factor of Ultrabook is a multistage approach.

Next year there will be another revision of Ultrabooks as we come out with the new micro-architecture, which will build additional capabilities. So it’s a long-stage approach and Q4 2012 going into next year you will continue to see new devices with new capabilities.

It’s our challenge to make sure the customers understand these products,” he said.

With many industry insiders predicting an imminent tipping point in the definition of personal computing, let by the rise of the tablet, Nauthoa said he believes there is indeed still room for the Ultrabook in that space.

“If you look at the projections of the PC market, irrespective of the tablet, it’s set to grow significantly between now and 2016. In this part

Asides from its Ultrabooks, Intel is using its presence at GITEX this year to showcase some of the technology it has been working on in the security space, both before and after its acquisition of McAfee.

“At Intel, we’ve taken a long term view that security is going to be one of the main things we need to address. Between now and 2015, we expect there to be 15 billion devices connected to the Internet. All of these devices are connective, consuming and analysing data. Data for any company is very important and so therefore is securing it,” he said.
