Oracle’s cloud blitz Oracle is demonstrating its latest cloud offerings at GITEX, including 243 new products added to its suite of software-asa-service (SaaS). In 2013 more than 100,000 Middle East users were added to the Oracle cloud. Globally Oracle has added more than 2,000 new customers who use the company’s cloud, bringing the total to more than 10,000. “Companies made a cautious entry into the cloud market, testing the new way of using software,” said Oracle senior marketing director Dana Murugan.

“This year we are hearing from our customers that they are ready to use the cloud for more of their business operations, and are looking to take advantage of our

Platform-as-a-service (PaaS), and Infrastructure-as-a-service (Iaas) offerings. There is no doubt that cloud-based services will form an ever-increasing proportion of our customers’ IT infrastructure.” Murugan believes that visitors to GITEX should look for solutions that help them save money, reduce the complexity of their IT installations and are agile enough to support business transformation. Etisalat & Ericsson sign RAN MoU Etisalat and Ericsson have announced an agreement to expand Etisalat’s Radio Access Network (RAN) in Dubai and Al Ain. On the first day of GITEX Technology Week in Dubai, Etisalat and Ericsson signed a memorandum of understanding, entering a strategic partnership to “strengthen support in using more advanced technology in the future, coherent with Etisalat’s vision to reduce the network’s environmental impact.” The partnership will see Ericsson employing its experience in ecology management services to dispose of swapped network equipment, in line with the requirements of the EU Waste from Electrical and Electronic

Equipment (WEEE) Directive. Under the agreement, Etisalat will collaborate with Ericsson’s Ecology Management Program’s free TakeBack of decommissioned equipment. Saeed Al Zarouni, Senior Vice President, Business Planning and Technology Evolution, Etisalat, says, “Etisalat has a crucial role to play as a technology enabler to help achieve the country’s SMART objective. By focusing on people’s needs and interests, we have developed an intelligent approach to creating a smart and sustainable infrastructure. “Teaming up with Ericsson for this significant network expansion helps us provide the connectivity solutions that help us give our customers

the best possible broadband experience. Importantly, it aligns with our long-term commitment to provide improved and smarter public services that are more people-centric, economically viable and environmentally sustainable.” Lars Linden, Executive Vice President for Global Customer Unit, Ericsson, said: “There are two key focuses as we enter the Networked Society: the provision of faster, more reliable connectivity for an improved customer experience, and the sustainability of networks. We are pleased to extend our longterm partnership with Etisalat and support them to pave the way to a Networked Society in the UAE.”
